Hot times in Halawa

It sure was warm at the Warriors’ first practice at Aloha Stadium this year. Here’s Ryan Mouton cooling down:

Because the JumboTron came with the package, the Warriors used it to announce the practice periods.

Back at UH, the players jumped into the cold tub.

Another UH rule this year: When catching passes from the JUGS machine, helmets must be removed. That’s one way to assure that the receivers will be focused. Here are Greg Salas and Joe Avery catching passes from the machine:

Don’t forget tonight is Heather McMackin’s Hawai‘i Wahine Football Clinic. The $10 fee includes a football manual, light refreshments and instruction from Heather McMackin and the UH football coaches.

Thanks to John McNamara and Derek Inouchi, UH is launching its new-look Web site tomorrow. Same address (hawaiiathletics.com) but spiffy new toys, such as videos. Reporters were allowed to preview the site, and it is indeed a significant upgrade. It’s also easy to navigate.

    Take care Ted.

  15. Garret August 19, 2008 7:32 am

    Pride,

I totally agree with your post on how we do not hope for injuries on other teams. To be the best you have to be ready to beat the best from the best.

  16. Garret August 19, 2008 7:33 am

    NYUH,

Thank you for making the Oceanic information so easy to understand! It is sad how they have the important information to us mainland people in tiny print on a footnote!

Also, ESPN GamePlan will have the Florida, Weber State, and Utah State games this season!

  17. Garret August 19, 2008 7:35 am

The University of Florida football team is scheduled to practice this morning in anticipation of Tropical Storm Fay coming into the area.

The Gators are scheduled to have a “Hawaii” scrimmage today with the first team going up against the second team with the second teams doing what the University of Hawaii does on offense and defense. The Warriors are the first team the Gators will face in the 2008 season.

Depending on the weather, Florida will practice twice on Wednesday.

  18. Garret August 19, 2008 7:35 am

I am really looking forward to the new and improved UH Athletics website!

  19. Garret August 19, 2008 7:38 am

Best wishes to Fresno State’s defensive coordinator!

Fresno State defensive coordinator Dan Brown, who had been recovering from brain cancer, underwent additional head surgery Monday in San Francisco.

Coach Pat Hill said Brown’s surgery had been scheduled and was less intense than the operation a year ago, when doctors found and removed 80% to 90% of a tumor.

    Good morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes…

Tsaikettes, have fun tonight at the clinic…I think A-Joe and I were gonna try and sneak in so we could learn about the game of football too!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA Seriously, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Like I tell some of the younger boys I lift weights with, “Nobody started out bench pressing 300 lbs. (unless you’re name was homey). We all worked our way up to that point. Everyone has to start from the beginning and work their way up.”

Pride – agree with you 100% on your last posts…..

d1 – in case I don’t see you, you and your family have a safe trip…..

FlaTed – Best wishes with Fay coming through your area…and stay safe.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  35. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 8:33 am

On another note. Are any wahine driving to the clinic from Foster Village or Aiea? If so, mind if I bum a ride? I hate to drive at night.

  36. (Jesse) James August 19, 2008 8:35 am

Lurker-ette…I believe the Tsaikettes will be wearing their Tsaiko garb….just look for the Tsaiko shirts….and mosey on over and introduce yourself….

It’s really too bad the clinic is not for COUPLES. More women would show up.

I don’t think couples could co-exist in these types of clinics. The men would be saying, “what?? you didn’t know that??”, and it would leads to fights. I think it’s better for the ladies to have their own night.

  55. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 9:13 am

Actually, hubby was saying just last night that he wished he could learn more about the game. There’s lots he doesn’t know.

  56. BG August 19, 2008 9:14 am

    Gigi

I usually get off around 5:15 in downtown and will be going to Mililani to pick-up Betty. I can pick you up on the way in. May be just a tad late getting to the SSC…being there is the main thing! 😀

  62. Stretch August 19, 2008 9:21 am

  71. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 9:46 am

Homey, it didn’t occur to me to ask hubby for a ride cause the clinic is for women so he would be bored waiting outside.

Besides, he has to nap at 8 pm and leave for the gym at 10.

My guess is BG will be sneaking in.

  72. myki August 19, 2008 9:48 am

    homey, it’s Cancer!

  73. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 9:48 am

  76. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 9:51 am

myki – thanks, I was thinking of limu poke when I wrote that…

  77. al August 19, 2008 9:52 am

he could nap in the car or go play basketball in the gym.
he could even go to the 24hr fitness on kapiolani and when you are both done he could take you for a late dinner.

    hmmmm.

  78. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 9:52 am

  84. (Jesse) James August 19, 2008 9:55 am

homey…or could be the Yin Yang….

    al…no Windex…just using soap and water…dang what a mess…LMAO

gigi…hubby has to nap before he goes to the gym…why not just go to the gym and than nap??? He’s gonna have to lift a lot of weight to build up to the guns that homey is packing….

KAZZ – How did the O-Line look? I know they are trying to tweak their line-up but did you see any improvement?? That is my biggest area of concern at the moment.

  85. al August 19, 2008 9:56 am

gg…..the wife is not going to the clinic, you are though.

btw, i have another great retreat for both you and the hubby if you are interested.

Good news for all the Hawaii IPTV users on the mainland, it appears they will be broadcasting 8 of the games. Phew, and I was just about to order College Gameplan. Hopefully we will have a good enough internet connection overseas so I can actually watch the season!

  96. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 10:05 am

Did everyone who ordered season tickets get them already?

    What about the stimulus checks?

Anyone still have dove looking shorts in their drawers?

Somehow I can imagine ST wearing dove shorts. Pretty gross visual, almost as bad a gigi in a bikini

  99. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 10:08 am

  101. rage777 August 19, 2008 10:09 am

    ST,

Why can’t they let us beta the new site? Are they worried we will make valid comments like the last time they did a beta?

Please tell them to not use this blue background. And put the hibiscus flower back.

  102. (Jesse) James August 19, 2008 10:10 am

  104. Lurker-ette August 19, 2008 10:13 am

400 people attending? WOW. Hmmm, maybe I will mosey on down to wherever the Tsai-kettes are since I am going alone (no husbands allowed, right?). Even without the Tsaiko shirts, I might recognize a few faces from lurking here!

  105. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 10:14 am

I wonder if they are going to hose down the turf every so often at the stadium to see if they can almost simulate the humidity at Florida?

  106. Stretch August 19, 2008 10:14 am

rage777 – the new website is for UH.

  107. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 10:16 am

  108. Stretch August 19, 2008 10:16 am

homey – that would be a good idea to simulate the humidity but I bet ST and anyone else observing practice wouldn’t like that.

  109. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 10:16 am

    Lurker-ette – You can’t miss them!

  117. Stretch August 19, 2008 10:27 am

homey – have not seen any white UA shoes but from what I hear, the players are not too thrilled with the new shoes.

  118. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 10:29 am

400 people at the clinic! Yee Haw!!!

SteveM – If Lurker-ette sends you her email address, could you pass it along to the Tsai-kettes who are attending? Maybe they can all meet up before the clinic so they can all sit together.

  120. Kekoa August 19, 2008 10:32 am

(Jesse) James ~ I’m ordering you an old fashioned *Spitoon* from Old Iowa’s State Capitol. They have the largest collection to choose from.

I just got off the phone with Midori7. She and UHfan808 will be there from … drum roll … between 5:30 and 6, those early birds! (I can’t leave home until 5:30, but I’ll definitely be there.) And yes, we will be geeking-out with our black Tsaiko couture. So please do look for us and come huddle with us, OK? Same for any other women planning to attend tonight.
    See you there!

Anyways, ladies have fun at the clinic tonight. I wish I had known about it sooner so I could attend. Ah, maybe next time. In the meantime, I’ll just read my “Football for Dummies” book.

Oh shoot, are you the “nice guy” Stretch? I’m really bad with names.. sorry!

  189. FloridaTed August 19, 2008 2:36 pm

    Great afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Finally back here after three days of irritating computer trouble. First my screen goes on the blink, then a transformer blows, then they give me a new transformer. Guess what? Faulty, off course. Oh, well, I’m back.

Thanks everybody for your concern and well wishes, but in the middle of the night the storm veered east and barely touched us. We hardly got any rain in this corner. Overall the thing was pretty harmless, just dumping a lot of water, which we actually need.

But after all the damage Florida had in the past, they were very caucious.

The Governor should pay me $1 Mill. for protection money. Ever since we moved here, two years ago, bringing the Hawaii Mana, no more Hurricanes in Florida. Lol.

  190. stacyj August 19, 2008 2:38 pm

BTW, hello everyone! How rude of me!

Gotta run shortly but had a couple of questions…
    1. Are there all these ankle problems because of the new shoes?
    2. What does wearing/not wearing a helmet have to do with concentrating? I would think that you would want to do the drills with them on in order to simulate when they catch it in practice.

  191. stacyj August 19, 2008 2:39 pm

Thanks Stretch! I can send the $$$ but can you just hold on to it until I come to HNL? If not, I’ll give you my address.

  203. Stretch August 19, 2008 2:46 pm

gigi – practice is closed today.

  204. stacyj August 19, 2008 2:47 pm

    Stretch works??? When?

And, I’m gonna pull out the blonde card and ask for clarification on the broken nose? (Scratching my head)

  205. Garret August 19, 2008 2:48 pm

Ohio State got an AMAZING turnout to watch their practice yesterday. Unlike UH, they open only 1 practice to the public. I’m sure that they are careful about what plays they run on their public practice.

A full 21/2 hours before the Ohio State Buckeyes showed up for their annual open-to-the-public workout — a practice, mind you — there were already a couple dozen fans standing in line in the withering heat waiting to get into Ohio Stadium.

Those losses in the last two national championship games were already forgotten by the faithful. A new season of hope brought an estimated 12,000 out to watch the Buckeyes, ranked No. 2 in the preseason, go through an otherwise meaningless series of drills and plays.

This is the third year in a row that Ohio State opened its doors for a practice. Two years ago, 28,000 came out to watch Heisman Trophy-winner-to-be Troy Smith and the then-No. 1 Buckeyes go through their paces. A year ago, the Buckeyes were ranked No. 11 in the preseason when they had a storm-wracked workout before 5,500 hardy souls.

Players such as All-American linebacker James Laurinaitis were available for autographs after each of those two previous open sessions. Not this year.

“Some who come abuse the situation. Some people come and all of a sudden it becomes an eBay thing and the people who are here with their youngster who would just love to have a James Laurinaitis signature kind of get nudged out of the way by the folks that are trying to use James’ signature for their own gain,” said Tressel, who admitted later he’d never been on eBay. “When things get a little bit abused and out of control, you have to control them.”

  206. stacyj August 19, 2008 2:50 pm

I think they should hold a free, “fill the stadium” practice to simulate the crowd at other large stadiums. Do it on a Saturday evening with the band, cheerleaders and all.

    Ah, what do I know.

  207. Stretch August 19, 2008 2:50 pm

stacyj – either way, up to you.

  208. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 2:50 pm

    Ted,

Good to hear that the hurricane bypassed your area. So it is a storm, not a hurricane?

  209. BG August 19, 2008 2:50 pm

    Stretch

    Call me (381-9334)

  210. Garret August 19, 2008 2:51 pm

Interesting to read the football rankings that were done by Vegas oddsmakers instead of writers. Several UH opponents made their top 30 list. No WAC teams made the top 30 on their list, but Fresno State was #38.

    Florida: #5

Can anyone stop the Gators offense???

    Cinci: #25

HC Brian Kelly was a great hire. New QB must fit system.

    Oregon State: #30

HC Riley is 7-0 in bowls games. 4-0 as HC and 3-0 as OC.

  211. Kelli August 19, 2008 2:52 pm

Stretch: Ahhh! You crazzzy! And yeah, I’ll tell my mom to be on the look out for your mom. It’s been years since I’ve seen her and maybe I won’t recognize her (or more like she might not recognize ME).

  212. Stretch August 19, 2008 2:54 pm

stacyj – if they have the helmets on, if they miss the ball, their face it protected and will not hurt. If they don’t have the helmet on, they might break their nose if they miss.

  213. stacyj August 19, 2008 2:55 pm

Kelli, in the 20+ years I’ve known Mama Stretch, she hasn’t changed much in looks.

  214. gibu August 19, 2008 2:56 pm

hey kelli! are you ready for school yet?

  215. stacyj August 19, 2008 2:57 pm

So, take the helmet off and they will do what ever it takes to catch the ball? I guess it makes sense.

If it was me, I’d make em do something for every missed ball, like gassers or something they hate to do.

  216. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 2:57 pm

yeah, helmets protect their face. So why are they not wearing them while catching balls from the JUG?

  217. Stretch August 19, 2008 2:58 pm

stacyj – do you remember who the band teacher was at dole??

  218. stacyj August 19, 2008 2:59 pm

Nice chatting with y’all. Gotta run and take care of the 4 sick kiddos. Yup, count ’em, all 4 sick with colds.

    Esme and out!

yeah, helmets protect their face. So why are they not wearing them while catching balls from the JUG?

it gives them incentive to concentrate and catch the ball

  220. stacyj August 19, 2008 3:00 pm

stretch, yeah, but his last name escapes me. First name was Glen, I believe. Why? I can find out from my mom.

  221. stacyj August 19, 2008 3:01 pm

Miura, Stretch. Does that sound right?

  222. stacyj August 19, 2008 3:01 pm

I mean, MAX MIURA. That was him. Why?

  223. WarriorMojo August 19, 2008 3:01 pm

Kelli, in the 20+ years I’ve known Mama Stretch, she hasn’t changed much in looks.

And that’s an AMAZING accomplishment when you figure that Stretch is her son!

Hi, Mrs. I. Looking forward to a blog party to christen the new mansion on O Street.

  224. stacyj August 19, 2008 3:02 pm

    I light bulb went on…

  225. stacyj August 19, 2008 3:03 pm

I mean, “the light bulb went on.” see, I need to go.

  226. Stretch August 19, 2008 3:04 pm

stacyj – I guess you know who KelliM’s father is.

  227. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 3:07 pm

    Kelli,

Was your grandfather ever in the Environmental Impact Statement business during the 1970s? If so, I worked for him briefly and saw his very young son at the office.

  228. stacyj August 19, 2008 3:08 pm

Wow, I never knew that. Hi KelliM. My mom taught there 18 years before moving to FHS. Aren’t you pretty young? I remember him having small kids when I was there. I could be wrong.

  229. stacyj August 19, 2008 3:09 pm

Small world. K-got a kid who took off a #2 diaper and tried to use the potty after the fact. I’m out. Will lurk later

Pauoa Boy, where are you my friend?

  230. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 3:10 pm

  231. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 3:11 pm

    Oh, well, long time ago.

    Doesn’t look too bad, IMO.

gigi – was hubby lurking today?

  236. Committed Road Warrior August 19, 2008 3:17 pm

Actually it’s something I can get used to. 🙂

  237. (Jesse) James August 19, 2008 3:18 pm

    Afternoon gang…

gigi – as Stretch just explained..it forces them to catch the ball. If they have helmets on, they aren’t afraid to miss the ball…no harm, no foul. If they don’t have their helmets on, getting hit in the face by a ball thrown by the JUGS machine could result in some serious damage…so they are more apt to catch the ball.

  238. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 3:19 pm

hubby usually lurks for 10 mins in the morning, then again during lunch, and then in the afternoon.

If he finds something annoying, he emails me – or lets me know when he gets home at 6:30.

  239. NICE HUBBY August 19, 2008 3:20 pm

Homey – No I was not.

  242. (Jesse) James August 19, 2008 3:21 pm

I guess the ladies are getting ready for some good times tonight….football is in full swing now….wooooo hoooooo

  243. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 3:22 pm

  244. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 3:22 pm

James, that sounds stressful. But, hey, whatever works.

  245. Kelli August 19, 2008 3:23 pm

stacyj: Hmmm… Maybe I will recognize her then. I remember her from when I was in elementary school… Haha!

gibu: Oh, heck no. I don’t know where the heck my summer went. Are you ready?

gigi-hawaii ©: Um, no my dad is full Japanese. Maybe my last name is pretty common… Even LizKauai asked if we knew the same people. Then again, this IS Hawaii.

stacyj: Well, I just turned 21 last week. Does that make me young? My older sister and I have a six-year age difference, though. She went to Dole and graduated from FHS.

  246. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 3:24 pm

hmmmm…let’s annoy hubby. Hey hubby, gigi said she drinks your Becks every morning and replaces it with stash she keeps in the back of the closet.

  270. Pride. August 19, 2008 3:46 pm

So how come there’s no clinic for the guys? I still don’t know what’s the difference between Cover 1, Cover 2, Cover Down, and Coverup.

When I was in pre-school, they taught me my ABC’s, but know one ever taught me my XYZ’s.

Can someone please tell me what a route tree is? I’ve looked and looked and have never seen a tree in the middle of the football field.

Why is the Quarterback only worth a quarter? If he’s the most important guy on the team, shouldn’t he be the FULLback?

Doesn’t it tickle for the Center to have someone touching his privates before every play?

How come the offensive tackles aren’t allowed to tackle anybody?

What’s the difference between a trap pull, a flat pull, and a sickle pull.

Why don’t we call lineman skilled players, doesn’t take skill to play those positions.

Perhaps our own Jason could teach the clinic, he knows a whole lot about football.

  271. HUBBA HUBBY August 19, 2008 3:46 pm

  274. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 3:52 pm

    …and wtf, I don’t see zebras.

  275. Pride. August 19, 2008 3:53 pm

Why do offensive players go “in motion” prior to the play starting? Can’t they makeup their mind on where to line up?

Wouldn’t it be more fun to have the players change positions every week, so that no one gets bored of their job? You could even get the coaches to coach a different set of players every week so that everyone stays fresh, and things don’t get stale.

  276. ryan August 19, 2008 3:54 pm

The new UH athletics website is looking really good. I really like the video and I’m glad they updated the facilities pictures.

  277. Pride. August 19, 2008 3:55 pm

Homey, we shouldn’t talk about Koakane’s girlfriend. Our wives and girlfriends are off-limits.

  278. Pride. August 19, 2008 3:58 pm

    Homey,

Then the field would be 200 yards long. Too long for most high schools to fit on their campuses.

  279. sjmacro August 19, 2008 3:59 pm

  306. Hawaiianbod August 19, 2008 5:19 pm

    Good Afternoon Tsaikos! 🙂

Sorry for being AWOL the past couple of days. I’ve been hibernating in the mountains of Pacific Palisades.

Re the KK – WOW! It was great meeting everyone for the very first time. I FINALLY came out of the the closet err cave. Although I was cemented to the lounge seat for most of the night, I enjoyed the sights and sounds from the talented-laden Tsaikos. “America’s Got Talent” and “American Idol” have nothing on the Tsaikos. So much Love and Laughter in the air. The five F’s were in full effect the entire nght. THANKS to everyone for making me feel welcome!

ST- Thank you for creating “The Warrior Beat” and making the virtual world a reality! I will always picture your dance moves whenever I hear “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” So versatile and flexible. I never knew the human body could contort in so many ways. Wena – You proved the old adage true: “Behind every successful man is a successful woman.” Nice meeting your sister.ST – you lucky man!

Stretch/SteveM – Mahalo for coordnating the event! Your time and effort are much appreciated.

Stretch – Thanks for your kindness and generousity!

Koakane – Mahalo for being our DD and checking-up on me! I’ll return the DD favor Just say when.

So how come there’s no clinic for the guys? I still don’t know what’s the difference between Cover 1, Cover 2, Cover Down, and Coverup.

I’m not a football expert by any means, but I’m pretty sure that “Cover up!” is what people are going to be yelling tonight at the seminar if Gigi really does show up in a bikini.

  308. chawan_cut August 19, 2008 5:20 pm

    SteveM, James,
yes I’m waiting for luck to come my way.
nah, my mom wanted to go but she doesn’t like driving at night, so i’m gonna drop her off at the arena.
my dad said why? and my mom said, you’re always telling me i don’t know what i’m watching.
i stayed out of that conversation obviously.

chawan…I know the feeling…when my dad was still alive, my mom sort of drove him nuts asking him questions about every play….even now, she always tells me, “Man, that was pass interference all the way!!!” And I’ll have to try to explain to her that sometimes those are judgement calls. Sometimes they go your way, sometimes they don’t. That’s just part of the game……..MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  311. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 5:34 pm

So there’s another wahine who doesn’t like to drive at night? That’s what happens when you’ve been married too long. Hubby usually drives at night…

Did you know it takes 1-1.25 hrs to drive from downtown to Mililani? And then 30-35 mins to drive from Mililani to Foster Village?

I hope we make it to the clinic by 7 pm.

And I hope there are football manuals left when we get there!

Two things about the time that Letuli was in with the first team o-line:

-Either Letuli alone is a SHOT in the arm for the entire o-line and made a world of difference or Aaron Kia can play either side and he and Letuli are the two top o linemen on this team.

More bad news about Reagan. It seems to me now that the earlier Reagan is cut the sooner he can find another team that needs a FB.

FB Reagan Mauia – Boomer Grigsby has finally unseated Mauia for the starting fullback spot and I don’t see him giving it back. Grigsby is a better special teams player, he catches the ball better, and he’s a serviceable, if not good, lead blocker on running plays. Mauia whiffed on a couple of blocks the past two games, and despite the lucky catch he made against Tampa Bay he’s got hands of stone. That’s why I expect it’s Grigsby and not Mauia who survives the final cut. It’s unrealistic to think the Dolphins will keep two fullbacks, but Mauia is talented enough to find work elsewhere.

  336. Garret August 19, 2008 8:18 pm

Asked about Miami’s WRs in their last preseason game, Miami’s head coach seems to try to downplay Bess’ mistakes.

(On how much clearer is the wide receiver position or is it) – “It’s starting to clear up a little bit in my head anyways. I thought that (Derek) Hagan and Ted (Ginn) played pretty well. We wanted to see that early in the game. We wanted to put (Davone) Bess out there in that group and again, aside from the couple of penalties that Bess might have had there, when you take those plays out, and you need to do that, you need to be able to look at young player like that, taking the mental error out because that is going to happen on occasion. You need to be able to look at the rest of his plays out there. I thought the rest of his plays and the rest of his work in that game was pretty good. That’s starting to clear up a little bit for me. (Greg) Camarillo made some plays in the game. There’s some guys that way that did some pretty good things. I felt (Ernest) Wilford a little bit, a couple times out there, just didn’t have a chance to get him the ball in the right spot. That’s where we were.”

Kind of funny how Miami talks about their young players on their OL and they are NOT referring to Samson! Miami will start 2 rookies on their OL, so compared to them Samson is a vet!

Rookie sixth-round pick Donald Thomas, who didn’t play organized football until his sophomore year at the University of Connecticut, will be the Dolphins’ right guard. He has played with the First Team since the second week of training camp, and Sparano said Tuesday that it is “Donald’s job to lose.”

The Dolphins’ offensive line is now set – Jake Long, Justin Smiley, Samson Satele, Thomas and Vernon Carey. Sparano said having two rookie starters “requires patience,” but is excited about Long and Thomas anchoring the line for many years to come.

“Those two young guys, they are as conscientious as it gets as far as getting the job done the right way, and at the same time they’re tough, they’re physically tough,”

  339. Garret August 19, 2008 8:23 pm

Interesting to see how Rice is trying to get fans to attend their home opener vs. SMU. To get people to the game they are actually giving free food to the first 2,000 people! They are having a cook-off BBQ, so the food should be really, really good. I’d love to pay $6 for Texas BBQ, especially with the proceeds going to a worthy cause!

Some 75 members of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo barbecue committee will help organize a cook-off honoring the rodeo’s scholarship recipients at Rice, who will be in attendance.

The first 2,000 fans will eat for free, with the proceeds of the remaining $6 plates going to the Wounded Warrior Project.

    Mr. David McClain
    President, University of Hawaii
    Bachman Hall, Room 202
    2444 Dole St.,
    Honolulu, Hi. 96822

Re: Invitation for Bids (IFB) No. 08-145 for Cooke Field Replace Turf

    Dear Mr. McClain,

We represent CO-HA Builders, Inc dba Applied Surfacing Technology (:CO-HA”) with respect to the above-referenced procurement (the “Project”). This letter serves as CO-HA’s protest regarding the procurement under Haw. Rev. Stat (“HRS”) Sec103D-701(a).

We understand that bids for the Project were opened on Friday, August 1, 2008 We also understand that the bid submitted by RMY Construction, Inc. was deemed to be the low bidder for the Project. [footnote: We understand that no award has been made to RMY for the Project. CO-HA reserves the right to supplement this protest and/or submit a post award protest under HRS Sec. 103D-701(a).] For the reasons discussed below, however, the University cannot award the Project to RMY because RMY did not submit a responsive bid as required by the Hawaii Procurement Code.

to be continued verbatim in da next post by me.

  341. Garret August 19, 2008 8:25 pm

Isn’t Micah Kia the brother of UH’s Kia? Anyway, for anyone who thinks that UH has a lot of injured players in camp, UCLA has is 100x worse! Not only have they lost 2 QBs, but their OL is really banged up.

Junior tackle Micah Kia was out, having suffered a broken left hand during Tuesday’s practice. Freshman lineman Jeff Baca was scheduled to have an MRI exam today on his left knee today. Tackle Mike Harris did not participate, as he is still recovering from a high-ankle sprain.

The Bruins were inexperienced on the offensive line — Kia and center Micah Reed were the only linemen to play in a game last season — to begin with. Now they are inexperiencedand injured.

The bumps and dings include Nate Chandler, a tight end turned tackle who sat out three days because of turf toe, and guard Scott Glicksberg, a converted tight end who is still bothered by a sore shoulder.

  342. Garret August 19, 2008 8:27 pm

  344. bighilofan2 August 19, 2008 8:34 pm

Hi gangee. da protest letter by Karin Holma, Bays Deaver Lung, Rose Holma attys, for CO-HA, continues….

    1. The Procurement Code Required RMY to List a Licensed Specialty Subcontractor in Its Bid.

The Hawaii Procurement Code, HRS Chapter 103D, requires all bids for construction work to:

Include the name of each person or firm to be engaged by the bidder as a joint contractor or subcontractor in the performance of the contract and the nature and scope of the work to be performed by each. HRS 103D-302(b). Further, a bidder must retain properly licensed specialty subcontractors to perform work for which the bidder is not licensed to perform itself. See Okada Trkg v. Bd of Water, 97 Haw. 450 (2002) (“a general engineering contractor cannot perform specialized work for which it is not, automatically or otherwise, duly licensed and which it lacks the requisite skill to undertake:). Any bid that fails to list properly licensed specialty contractors to perform specialty work is therefore deemed nonresponsive under the Procurement Code. See Id. at 463; Oka Trkg v. Bd of Water Supply, 101 Haw. 68, 80 (Ct App 2002).

RMY is a licensed general engineering contractor with a “AC” licensing designation. A copy of RMY’s licensing informatoin obtained from the Contractor Licensing Board’s online records is attached as Exhibit A. RMY’s license allows it to perform certain work, including 17 t y pes of specialty work. See H. Admin. Rule Sec. 16-77-32. However, RMY is hnot licensed to install synthetic turf, which constitutes a significant percentage of the work on the project. As such, RMY was required to obtain and list a properly licensed specialty subcontractor in its bid.

I not attaching the exhibits to this post, my fingers. 😀

to be continued. just a little more

  345. bighilofan2 August 19, 2008 8:50 pm

Karin Holma’s letter for Dennis Sadowski, registered agent, secretary treasurer and director of CO-HA, continues….

    2. RMY Failed to List a Licensed Specialty Subcontractor.

ON 8/8/08, Mr. Dennis Sadowski, an officer of CO-HA, spoke with Kirk Yuen at the UH to discuss RMY’s bid. Mr. Yuen informed Mr. Sadowski that RMY listed an entity called “Sports Turf Hawaii” as the “synthetic turf” subcontractor. On 8/11/08 we received from the University a copy of the subcontractor list submitted by RMY as part of its bid.
[footnote: RMY did not specify whether Sports Turf Hawaii was a joint contractor or a subcontractor as required on OPRPM Form 54. CO-HA presumes that Sports Turf Hawaii is a subcontractor.] See Exhibit B at page 2 (listing Sports Turf Hawaii, License No. C02848/C-27).

Sports Turf Hawaii is apparently the registered trade name for a corporate entity called Sports Turf Hawaii, LLC. See Exhibit C. Because Sports Turf Hawaii is a trade name only, the real entity performing the specialty work on the Project will be its registrant, Sports Turf Hawaii, LLC. Further, Sports Turf Hawaii’s licensing depnds on the licensing staatus of its registrant, Sports Turf Hawaii, LLC. However, Sports Turf Hawaii, LLD does not possess any contractor licenses, nor dies oit appear to have a registered Reponsible Managing Employee.

The license identified in RMY’s bid, C-2848, is held by Sports Turf Hawaii, LLC’s manager, Logan P. Hamocon. See Exhibit D. Mr. Hamocon’s license, however, cannot be transferred to Sports Turf Haaii, LLC. See H. Admin. R. 16-77-73. [footnote: Mr. Hamocon was apparently doing management consulting work as Sports Turf Hawaii from Dec. 1999 to Dec. 2000. However, that trade name has long since expired. See Exhibit E (showing Sports Turf Hawii trade name with an expiration date of Dec 13, 2000]

Given that RMY has failed to list a licensed specialty subcontractor in its bid, it cannot be considered a resopnsive bidder under the Procurement Code. See Okada Trkg v. Bd Water Supply, 101 Haw. 68, 80 (Ct App. 2002).

okay gangee. the conclusion is next.

Rumor is HF was somehow involved with the rubber-Gorilla suit “Bigfoot” hoax in Georgia. It was also reported that a D. Sadowski, a self-appointed member of the World Wildlife Foundation, declared that only the CO-HA Group and Associates, were qualified and licensed to search for and identify “Bigfoot”, Yeti, and/or the Abominable Snowman!

  352. bighilofan2 August 19, 2008 9:07 pm

    3. Conclusion.

CO-HA requiests that the University rject RMY’s nonrespnsive bid and award the Project to the next lowest responsible bidder or as otherwise provided for in the Procurement Code. If the University will not reject RMY’s nonresponsive bid, the University is nonetheless required to halt all action on the Project unless and until the chief procurement officer “makeas a written determination that the award of the contract without delay is necessary to protect the substantial interests of the State.” HRS Sec 103D-701(f).

Thank you for your attention to this matter. Please contact me should you have any questions.

    Very truly yours,
    Karin L. Holma
cc: client; Messrs. Duff Zwald and Kurt Minato,
Office of Procurement and Real Property.

That is the entire protest letter, except for the exhibits. Exhibit A is the general licensee profile for CT-17332, RMY Construction INC, AC license.
Exhibit B is a 2 page form, the first page is blank form OPRPM Form 54, which states “…the following informatoin shall be submitted on this form by each bidder as a bid requirement” and on page 2 it states
in handwriting “Sports Turf Hawaii C-24248/C-27 Synthetic Turf” in describing the nature and scope of work. The license number is RMY license number, and it is signed by Russell Yamamoto, President, dated 7/25/08. Exhibit C is Sports Turf Hawaii Trade Name, the Registrant is Sports Turf Hawaii LLC, Agency Name is Logan Hamocon. Exhibit D is Vocational Licensing Search General Lidense for Logan P. Well, that guy on the board tried to pull a fast one to get rid of his competition. No shame. He couldn’t underbid the guy who did a good job on Murakami so he used his position to influence policy to his own advantage. My question is is this guy still on the board? He should be history.

    puhi

    Puhi,

Da guy is most definitely still on the Board!! What shibai!! There’s gotta some way to make the process better and faster. 😡

  357. bighilofan2 August 19, 2008 9:22 pm

So da point Sadowski like make is there is a technicality error. Hamocon is not Sports Turf Hawaii. Sports Turf Hawaii is the trade name for Sports Turf Hawaii LLC. So what if Hamocon is da agent.

Dat Sadowski stay splitting hairssssss… and is pi$$$$in me off big time….

da quick fix is dis so UH peeps lissen up!!

President David McClain, you are the Chief Procurement Officer for the University of Hawaii. Look at HRS Sec. 103D. You da man! You can make written finding that fixin da field now is in da State’s vital interests. Wat y u waiting for? You told JJ last January yu was going step up. Well bradda, step up!!!!!!

Fix da field now, pretty please. All dis jazz about blaming Haffner, Duff, Minota, getting Rep Takai involved, yada yada is a bunch of hooooeyyy!!!

the button man is identified in Holma’s letter. Yu no Sadowski not gonna budge. He get one ego as big as my foot. Plan B, gang, Plan B. McClain… dis is so easy… National TV called our soap dish, and the Cooke Field, a disgrace. June Jones left because of horrible facilities…. what else yu need for say da fix is in da State’s vital interests. da exact words for use, and yo exak job, is said in HRS Sec. 103D.

Okay David, yo time fo shine!!!!

  358. puhi August 19, 2008 9:23 pm

    don’t forget – 9-4.

  359. puhi August 19, 2008 9:26 pm

    Sadowski is the guy’s name?

Sounds like a T-shirt is in the making.

    Ideas?

  360. Jason August 19, 2008 9:28 pm

Jason’s last comment broke the blog. And no, I did not drink a Beck’s today. It is not the weekend, yet, hello!

Did gigi just throw me under the bus? Ouch! I would have helped gigi understand the book I gave her, but IDK now … 😉

LiLMermaid: I think it was BigWave who you’re talking about.

gibu and Kelli: Ack, not really for school. Not ready for school! ❗

Pride.: I can handle QBs, al can handle recruiting, you can handle O-line, gigi can handle alcoholic beverages.

As for Okie — I’m an offensive guy, don’t ask me about those defensive guys. 😉

Ralph/bighilofan2: I can host files if needed. But I don’t have a fax machine, so you’d have to get the files to me some other way. I can make PDFs if needed. (Wow, just bought Adobe Acrobat 9 yesterday. It’s so much faster than Acrobat 7! Or maybe it’s the 4 GB of RAM that I have on my desktop, compared to 512 MB on my laptop.) 😀

  361. bighilofan2 August 19, 2008 9:29 pm

Like I said gang, Sadowski no scared burn bridges for show dat UH neva follow da exak rules and procedure. He like show errybody how smaht he stay. okay, i like play too….

David McClain, it is in the State of Hawaii’s best interests that you have Darolyn Lendio, Vice President for Legal Affairs and UH’s Counsel, write you a proposed findings of fact stating that fixing the Ching Cooke Field immediately is in the best interests of the State of Hawaii, Recite the problems that faced UH last year due to the national exposure given the rundown facility, the coaches complaining about injury to players using the field, yada yada.

It shouldn’t take a week. Its already been a week. Maybe you’ll go with the other plan, but have this plan ready too.

The bottom line is: make the fix happen now!

There is going to be a contractor’s board meeting at the downtown post office building (by the elevators) Friday, starting at 8;30 am. The synthetic field issue will come up, probably around 10 a.m.. If you not doing anything, and want to testify, using words like appearance of impropriety, conflict of interest, engaging in conduct not in the best interests of the State or UH football, go for it. maybe you can ask the Board to specify if the rules they are using now are the same rules for the upcoming bids on the Aloha Stadium seating fix?

And remember, the letter is Karin Holma’s take on the law and her client’s position. I haven’t checked with the UH counsel on their take. All I know is, this shouldn’t take a week. We gotta fix the field now.

    Jason,

except for the typos, the above is the verbatim protest letter.

I like ask da UH Pres this question. If the Gov had signed the paypah okaying the 1.2 mil for the field fix, and we had this problem, and JJ was gonna leave, wouldn’t Pres. McClain be saying he’ll authorize the fix now, trying to get JJ to stay?

Well, whats the diff???? Its still a vital State interest…. The bad national publicity neva go away, we gotta finish what we said we wuz going do….

  369. madeinhawaii August 19, 2008 9:52 pm

Hey… so what did you guys decide on the origins of “okie”?

    a) short for “okinawan”

    b) short for “okay”

    c) Sooner fans cannot pronounce/remember words that exceed two syllables

    d) Is what the Japanese at the hot springs say when they see “pride” drop his towel?

  370. addahknowjoe August 19, 2008 9:52 pm

OK. So, just got off the phone with Midori7 and she reported that tonight’s clinic was different than she expected but was very very informative. Two thumbs up!

Hopefully, as the Tsaikettes fall into the blog they can give us their take on tonight’s events.

  371. puhi August 19, 2008 10:05 pm

Sadowski, the last of the ole boys?

Or the only one that got exposed lately?

  372. puhi August 19, 2008 10:06 pm

    Cooke Sadowski at Ching Field

  373. XxFaithxX August 19, 2008 10:09 pm

BHF: Much mahalos for the 411 and all the work you have done to get this to this point. I haven’t been on the ball as of late due to work ( big meeting with GM tomorrow ) and stuff. I’ll take the time to print out what you wrote and call and email McClain. Just one thing to remember, he does not like to be bothered, so WE ALL must call and just overload the system to make him respond. Remember, he is in Lingles back-pocket and who recommended/nominated Sadowski to the board? Larry Lingle herself.

We must make like bacteria in his jock and get that bugga movin’ …yeah yeah I know, gross, but hard times require drastic measures.

AND if that clown Sadowski tries to make this more of a public matter, let him because all this Conflict of Interest will blow up in his face and others who have backed this idiot will be exposed.

  374. d1島 August 19, 2008 10:15 pm

Okie is a 5-2 developed by Bud Wilkinson at Oklahoma in the 50’s to counter the option offenses that were popular then – split-T and wing-T.
    Smash mouth stuff.
Eddie Hamada used to run it in the 70’s at Iolani with a “Monster”

To combat the Split-T defense, Wilkinson invented the 5-2. The Okie Defense called for both inside line-backers to stack behind the nose guard and defensive tackle whenever the QB moved to either side, and then move to any bubbles left by the defensive linemen.

By stacking the LB’s, the defense made it difficult for the OG’s to block them or prevent them from clogging the running lanes used by the half-back on the dive. Once the dive began to fail gaining yardage, the option began faltering

Hawaiianbod: Yeah, I’m sorry! What a bummer! And I’m your second favorite blog host? How come not first?!?! Just kidding. ST is great.

Jason: Oh, the word “school” just kills me. I need to go and buy my pen. Yes, I have a certain type of pen from Japan that I like to use. I’m convinced that I write neater and faster. Ha, there’s a blog topic: school supplies.

And, I just came back from the clinic and I saw a Tsai-ko and some Tsai-kettes. I even got to see Momma Stretch who knew me before I could spell “football”.

We know Sadowski’s legal position now. He’s saying Hamocon is not a properly licensed subcontractor. an he pointing to da State license applications, one in Hamocon’s name, da odda in Sports Turf Hawaii LLC’s name. For guys like me, Hamocon can fix da field cuz he just wen pau fix da odda same kine UH field. And Sadowski stay lookin at da paypahwork and he spotting one legal loophole, he figaz, an he all pi$$ off he neva get da job, so he like show he no mo dan da ress ah us cuz he on da contraktah bored… officious…. 😀 he like his monies wart ah lawyering…. so we gonna give him his $$$$ wurt! bad cases make bad law.

    you’re welcome!

stretch, i really was there to pick up my mom. go ask the other tsaikettes!

  380. Jason August 19, 2008 10:49 pm

First gigi in a bikini, now Pride. without his towel. Ow, my head …

Kelli: The worst part for me is that I have to adjust my schedule. I woke up at 11 this morning; can’t be doing that during the school year. Even though the next few practices are at 7 AM, I think I’m going to try and make those. Yikes, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday getting up at 5 AM. That’ll get my internal clock changing. 😀

I better go to bed now, if I want to wake up early enough. I might end up hitting the Snooze button and staying home anyways. 😉

  381. homey ⑤ August 19, 2008 10:52 pm

And it is “pidgin” or Hawaiian creole.

  383. bighilofan2 August 19, 2008 11:00 pm

    Tom Mui,
what else you need for come to your own conclusion? My best informed opinion now is that Darolyn Lendio make 2 prong: 1. da contract authorization was correct; and 2. David McClain make written finding per HRS 103D.. David gotta follow up so we no lose a technicality…. This is more important than his ego…And he, as the chief procurement officer for UH, is the only guy who can do the job.

  384. Kekoa August 19, 2008 11:05 pm

BHF2 ~ I don’t care what HF or Sadowski said about you, you are still our Plantation Style Pidgen Prosecuter. Drive on big guy!

Will you be flying in on Friday? Can I pick you up at the airport and take you to that meeting? If so, call me.

  385. Kelli August 19, 2008 11:07 pm

Jason: Shoot, maybe I should go to practice and get motivated to wake up early. Hee hee…

  386. Kekoa August 19, 2008 11:11 pm

D-1 ~ When do you, your roomie and #2 youngster fly out? Any transportation issues I can help you with getting to and from HNL and Waipio, just give me a ring.

You’re the best Warriors lead dog there ever was. This entire Sadowski morasse is a text book case of unethical rule bending for personal gain, conflict of interest and using a position of influence to surpress free enterprise and competition, not to mention hurting the vital interests of the most popular and nationally publicized instituton of the State of Hawaii.

This Rat has to be stopped before it soils our favorite playpen.

good evening tsaiko country. finally had time to catch up on all da readings. some funny some informative and some just out dea.

well how was the classes tsaikettes? did you enjoy the information presented tonight? anyone care to share their thoughts.

congrads to d1 for coming up with the origin of the base Okie defense called 5-2 or latter known as the odd defense because of the five man front. It was so named for the first team to design its concept (Okalahoma) and make famous by Bud Wilkenson’s team that three national championships.

one variation was the 5-2 monster or rover which converted a defensive back into another linebacker and place him strategically spread around the field according to the offensive formation strength.

d1 or pride can you describe the 5-2 eagle concept? and no it was not a drinking formation named after Budweiser. 🙂

    Wishing your son the best.

stay safe, play nice and remember to ask akua to care for your family.

  396. Pride. August 19, 2008 11:38 pm

As you well know Koakane in the regular 5-2 concept the two guards are uncovered and the two tackles are covered by the two defensive tackles. Usually you would have the Mac and Mike head up on the two guards with the two DT’s in a 4 or 5 technique.

In the 5-2 eagle you would take the strong-side DT and put him usually in a 3 technique over the frontside guard, sliding the Mac head-up on the strongside OT.

In a double eagle you would cover both guards with your defensive tackles and slide both Mac and Mike over the tackles.

The eagle would help the defense take away all inside runs. With good penetration by both defensive tackles, you should be able to take away most off tackle plays and long traps as well. Both Mac and Mike should be able to slide more quickly to the perimeter. Inside DT’s should also be able to prevent the guards from getting out on the perimeter on wide sweeps.

  397. Curt August 19, 2008 11:38 pm

So ladies, how wuz da clinic? Seems like Kelli was the only one who made it back. Maybe the Tsaikettes are burning the midnight oil helping Coach Mac finalize his Gator game plan.

  398. Kekoa August 19, 2008 11:44 pm

Curt ~ It is not uncommon for the Tsaikettes to find reason to gather after an event at an undisclosed location, clear the trail dust with a few adult beverages, and den hele on home.

“It ain’t over ’til they say it’s over!”

  399. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 11:44 pm

The clinic was interesting, informative, and entertaining! It started at 7:15 and ended at 9:30.

Thank you, BG, for the ride, Betty and Peaches for the company.

I wrote a long post about the experience and will post it after midnight.

  400. Addahknowsports© August 19, 2008 11:45 pm

    Koakane-

The clinic was awesome! It was informative, entertaining, personal. A lot of it still went over my head, but I got a cool handbook to refer to. I mainly tried to listen to what was being said. I had to also take pictures as a-joe forewarned me that if I didn’t, the twins were going to confiscate my camera and take the pics themselves. Ayah!

Heather Mac began by giving us their history of how they ended up where they are now. It was personal, infused with family values and warmth. Incidentally, it’s probably the only time that when the coaches talked about their kids, the whole audience went, “Awwwwwwh”.

    (Will add more shortly)

  401. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 11:46 pm

About 450 wahine attended, terrific for a week night. If it is held again next year on a Saturday, expect 1,000 to show up.

  402. Curt August 19, 2008 11:50 pm

Maybe there was no clinic at all. Maybe it was Ladies Nite with da Chippendales. No wonder…they’re still at the Stan Sheriff Center.

I must be getting tired. Good night all.

  403. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 11:50 pm

Alas, I took 2 photos — 1 of the McMackins at the podium and 1 of the crowd — but they were dark so I cannot post them.

  404. Pride. August 19, 2008 11:54 pm

Tsaikettes, if you have any questions or clarification on anything that was discussed tonight, do not be afraid to ask. Pose your questions online and I’m sure one or more of the Tsaikos or Tsaikettes would be able to answer you. Remember there are no stupid questions, so do not be ashamed to ask. Any one who laughs or makes fun of you will get the “boot” from A-Sports.

  405. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 11:54 pm

Did you know that the coaches consider Tim Grasso to be the BEST punter in the nation because he can kick the ball to anywhere the coaches want — to the left side or to the 5 yard line, etc.

  406. gigi-hawaii © August 19, 2008 11:56 pm

We all got a football manual, a poster of the team, and a schedule care plus a seminar — all for $10.
    Pretty good deal.

  407. Curt August 20, 2008 12:00 am

    Gigi, Addahknowsports:

So you ladies made it back. Sounds like you had a good time. Too bad my better half couldn’t join you two and the others. She slept early tonight so she get to the office by 4:30 am. Nitey nite.

  408. Addahknowsports© August 20, 2008 12:02 am

I take that back….I will add more tomorrow. I’m so tired, my head is about to hit the desk. Gotta get up early tomorrow.

I just want to say that this is the kind of experience that someone like me who knows nothing about football should have. The Macs are very personable, warm, down to earth people. They took a topic that can be extremely confusing, added their own brand of warmth, humor and values , then presented it in a very non-intimidating personal manner (despite the large number of people that attended). Coach Mac went around to say hi to everyone (got to take a picture with him, too).

Okay, the room is starting to spin. I will write more tomorrwor.

  411. gigi-hawaii © August 20, 2008 12:12 am

I think men would have enjoyed this clinic, especially when the coaches showed videos of the different strategies and plays.

  412. Kelli August 20, 2008 12:22 am

Curt and the rest of the Tsai-kos/Tsai-kettes: Pictures with my two-sense, pretend-like-I-actually-know-stuff comments will be up on Campus Life 101 around 5 a.m.

ST and Tsai-kos are welcome to save any pictures. And don’t worry, I put in a link to The Warrior Beat because there was a reason why I was there — I don’t know too much about football.

According to the Contractors License Board agenda for Friday’s meeting, there is no specific item listed for the Ching/Cooke dispute. Instead, the agenda item is listed as 6-C under Committee Reports: Synthetic Field Surfaces – License required to install synthetic turf on sports fields.

Logan Hamocon will be in attendance. If you wish to speak at the monthly meeting, call 586-2700 for more information. If all you are planning to do is sit and watch, just show up by 8:25 am to get a seat. The meeting starts at 8:30 am.

    Back to lurking.

  415. Mike August 20, 2008 2:51 am

Heather Mack did a great job with the clinic tonight. According to Derek, there were about 500 in attendance tonight, including 100 walk-ins. Great seeing Myki, Peaches, Gigi, Esme, WassupDoc and other Tsaikettes there. And, no Stretch, I didn’t go in drag.

  416. Stretch August 20, 2008 4:26 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

I am looking through the handbook that was passed out and it looks like the best part is that they give a list of “Common Lingo”. That should help a little rather than hear “watchamacallit”, “thingy”,”youknow”, ….

I (and a few of my friends) attended Heather McMackin’s football clinic last night. What a classy and close family the McMackins are! Coach has a simple philosopy to football, but it can also be applied to life.

Lots of information and thanks to the Lee brothers we know more about how the defensive lineups work and the reads the quarterback goes thru on offense. We watched film of offense, defense and special teams along with diagrams. By the questions the audience asked, it’s easy to tell that the audience was very knowledgable about the game already. I look forward to the season starting, I’ll have my trusty guide with me. Thanks Mrs. McMackin, I and my friends will be there next year.

I was glad to meet Midori7 and Uhfan808. Nice to meet you finally and look forward to coming to some of the Tsaiko events in the future.

  430. d1島 August 20, 2008 5:54 am

OK, so I couldn’t resist checking in on Da Geckos’ Tuesday practice.
Still much attention on Percy Harvin’s status.

PERCY WATCH: Wide receivers coach Billy Gonzalez said Percy Harvin is starting to run routes while catching passes from a shooting jug – the machine that spews footballs like those T-shirt guns at sporting events. You know what they say about catching jugs? Tell em’, Billy.
“Catching jugs is one thing, seeing them come off a quarterback’s arm is another,” Gonzalez said.
Meyer said it’s possible Harvin, the dynamic junior wide receiver/running back, will be ready by next week to prepare for Hawaii.

  431. d1島 August 20, 2008 5:56 am

Another area of focus is the DB’s

On the cornerbacks: Meyer says, “Joe (Haden’s) our best corner right now. I don’t know how well our corners played today. I’m not sure they played that well. I’m going to have to go watch the film. Up to this point Joe is No. 1. Wondy (Pierre-Louis) is No. 2 and after that you probably have Janoris (Jenkins), who seems to make an interception every day, and Markihe (Anderson). We have some depth there.”

  432. Ronnie August 20, 2008 5:59 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Nation!

Hi Addahknowsports! I’m glad you guys had a great time last night! Were you ever able to hook up with Lurker-ette?

  433. d1島 August 20, 2008 5:59 am

Depth could determine the kind of front Hawaii will see from the Gecko D

Meyer doesn’t sound as excited about his defensive tackles save Lawrence Marsh, who has emerged as a starter. “That’s a problem,” Meyer said. “We see some guys doing some good things. We’re also going to play some three down. That’s one issue that’s yet to be resolved. We’re hoping to get (freshman Matt) Patchan involved.”

Hmmm…mysterious stickers on the practice helmets mught be Hawaii’s equivalent of this Gecko ritual.

DESTRIPING: Freshman offensive/defensive lineman Byran Jones, freshman fullback T.J. Pridemore and DT Troy Epps, a JC transfer, had their stripes removed from their helmets on Tuesday.
Destriping is a symbolic way of a player earning his way onto the team. Nine of the 21 freshman/junior college transfers have been destriped. So far we’ve got (deep breath): Jones, Pridemore, Epps, Moore, Green, Jenkins, WR Frankie Hammond Jr., OL David Young and RB Jeff Demps.

    Thanks for the ID, A-sports.
Everyone seems really “enthusiastic” about Keao Monteilh modeling the uniform except UHFan808. What is she spying with her camera?

Coach Meyer hasn’t released a depth chart yet but that didn’t stop Jeremy Fowler of the Orlando Sentinel from coming up with one of his own.

Thanks Lurkee Lew for the heads up on this coming Friday’s meeting at Contractor’s Board.

Later on I’m going to clean up the protest letter, patch em together (its 2 1/2 pages, single space) and put em all in one spot on today’s blog, if ST gets up early enuf to post anew.

    anyway:

RODNEY TAM is the Deputy AG assigned to the Contractor’s Board.
I’m posting the whole letter here so you guyz can make a copy of the entire letter.
I faxed a copy of the letter and exhibits to Jim Donovan, Kevin Soares (Lt Gov Aiona’s Chief of Staff), Tom Mui, Stretch. If somebody wants a copy, post your fax #.

I’m thinking that the Contractor’s Board meeting is going to be a rigged deal for Dennis Sandowski. His friends who testified for him last March when he was voted in for reappointment to the Board – ie Joe Kindrich, are gonna be backin him, under the guise of “this is the kind of license required for installing a synthetic turf field.”

You know what I’m thinking? Sandowski get the paper… him an his frenz wen make up….
    Hamocon got the experience….
    Sandowski get da mouth!!!

I also realize that making nice nice is for chilvalry. I wouldn’t make the first team if I wuz all nice nice. This is not gonna be a courtroom battle. This is gonna be smash mouth football on the line of public opinion. Fixing the field – those words won’t mean squat if we don’t fix the field right away . Our Warriors need the field fixed now, not next year, not 2010, not 2011. while our brothers are working hard, da talkers are wearing Zig Zane, Nieman Marcus Brooks Brothers, thinking billable hours.

    All hoooey!!!

    The Sadowski (CO-HA) protest letter.

    Bays Deaver Lung Rose Holma
    letterhead

    8/13/08
    Mr. David McClain
    President, University of Hawaii
    Bachman Hall, Room 202
    2444 Dole St.,
    Honolulu, Hi. 96822

Re: Invitation for Bids (IFB) No. 08-145 for Cooke Field Replace Turf

    Dear Mr. McClain,

We represent CO-HA Builders, Inc dba Applied Surfacing Technology (:CO-HA”) with respect to the above-referenced procurement (the “Project”). This letter serves as CO-HA’s protest regarding the procurement under Haw. Rev. Stat (”HRS”) Sec103D-701(a).

450 (2002) (”a general engineering contractor cannot perform specialized work for which it is not, automatically or otherwise, duly licensed and which it lacks the requisite skill to undertake:).

I not attaching the exhibits to this post, my fingers.

to be continued. just a little more

It won’t be easy to resolve this turf issue in time to get the turf in so it can be used when it starts raining this season. The grass fields will be chewed up from use too with soccer and football.

The bottom line is did the low bidder have a licensed subcontractor in the required specialty? If not is the bid defective or can this one element be made up for some other way so in substance the bid requirements are met?

    Capitol-ist/Wassup Doc,

You know good and well the meeting on Friday is gonna be a love fest for Sadowski. But if get plenny us guyz, they going limit conversation and pretend they listening and smiling, no do nuttin, and tings go sliding out da door… nuttin gets done, field still stay broke… if UH reverses itself, goin look bad for UH. so day in a no win win situation… You no dat… I no dat…. bottom line, Sadowski stay lookin for room for say “i tole you so” So sumbudy bettah tell bradda Hamocon no go alone… he going get flustered befo he starts….

Dis is classic lawyering…. if you no more facts, jus look em in da eye, move da lips an argue about…
anything else because da bottom line is Sadowski wen loze da bid, bradda Hamocon wen fix Murakami good.

da real question is, if Hamocon hisself fixes Ching Cooke, will da manufacturer and RMY’s insurers honor da warranty?

Rutgers is being scrutinized very closely now for their off-the-books spending and secret deals…this goes well beyond Travel-gate for UH with the Sugar Bowl list.

Months before revelations of hidden deals and no-bid contracts sparked two investigations, Rutgers University auditors were warning that no one was watching the money flooding into the school’s athletic department.

A confidential internal audit issued nearly six months ago criticized the department’s fiscal controls — including hundreds of thousands of dollars in off-the-books spending that never appeared in the Rutgers budget.

The 23-page report describes a department suddenly flush with additional sponsorship money and soaring revenues, following the rebound of the once hapless Scarlet Knights football team. At the same time, it details how the department eagerly tapped into those resources with seemingly little oversight.

Auditors found the athletic department subsidized the travel costs of boosters and other VIPs who accompanied the Scarlet Knights on charter flights to post-season bowl games the past three years, at a time when the university was hiking tuition and cutting academic budgets. It also discovered that the department understated its expenses for those games in reports to the administration and concluded the athletic department lacked the ability to collect and reliably report critical financial information “to the president, CFO, the board and the public.”

They’re basically diverting funds that were sold as sponsorships to pay for other things that are not on the books of the university,” he said. “This is not the right way to spend public money.

    Morning Tsaikos!

Thank you to Heather McMackin, Coach Mack, the coaching staff & their wives for taking the time out of their busy schedules to participate in last night’s Football Clinic!

Lots of info & lots of fun! Really interesting to have offensive/defensive schemes & kickoff returns broken down & explained by the Lee brothers & Coach Malloe with practice & game footage.

Keith Ah Soon & Keao Monteilh are REALLY good sports! We had front row seats for the uniform demonstration. The UA jerseys are difficult to pull over the shoulder pads but as Coach Miano said, the closer the fit the less fabric to grab on to.

The Tsaikos were well represented last night! Even met a few lurkers who came up to say hi. Great to meet GMA Honey also!

    GO WARRIORS!

  460. Garret August 20, 2008 8:32 am

Reggie Bush and his parents are appealing the decision that denied their attempt to keep their court details secret. Reggie Bush has spent FAR more in lawyer’s fees than what the other guy was asking (maybe 3x more already from one article I read!), so it is clear that he and his parents *really* do not want the truth to come out! That kind of indicates that Reggie, his parents, and maybe even USC might not want the NCAA to find out what happened when Reggie played for USC.

Former USC running back Reggie Bush and his parents are appealing a recent Superior Court decision that denied their attempt to have a lawsuit against them settled in confidential arbitration and out of public court.

The appeal also puts a crimp into the investigation into Bush by the NCAA, which was focused on the key Aug. 29 deposition of Michael Michaels, now delayed.

It is even more shameful now to me that Federal inspectors blamed tomatoes for the salmonella outbreak…since we already had known about the salmonella-infected peppers coming from Mexico! Given that information, shouldn’t they have looked into peppers earlier instead of ruining the tomato industry? If 10% of the peppers and chiles from Mexico tested positive for a year for salmonella, I’d say that is a high-risk food category!

Scientists have found a way to create blood from stem cells–they might actually be able to use stem cells to generate an endless supply of O- blood, the rare blood type that can be used for anyone! Right now there are no stem cell lines that are O-, but they can create versatile type O blood.

A stillborn baby (delivered at 23 weeks due to internal bleeding by the mother) in Israel was pronounced dead and placed in a hospital refrigerator…and several hours later she started moving around! The low temperature in the refrigerator apparently slowed her metabolism down and helped her survive. The baby weighed just 1.3 pounds!

  484. tom mui August 20, 2008 11:19 am

    MANOA

The bottom line is did the low bidder have a licensed subcontractor in the required specialty?

I think the question should be whether the low bidder NEEDED a specialty license.

As I understand it – and I’m trying to get the minutes of the Board Meeting of 10-07 – there was no requirement in that specialty and that one of the board members brought it up, wrote the requirements etc. However, it was never formally adopted nor made a rule.

If that is the case, then the letter to President McClain is full of sound and fury (but) … [fill in your own conclusion!]

    gigi,

I’m *definitely* not giving up sashimi! I can’t wait until Friday when we have some friends over–Lori decided to have a Hawaiian food night:

    Lori’s poke (I cannot wait!)
sashimi (since my kids prefer raw fish to poke)
    kalua pig
    lau lau
    rice
    whatever our friends bring

    Have a great trip d1shima!

  487. Garret August 20, 2008 11:25 am

    Tom Mui,

Before the bids were submitted the news about the new rule came out and UH clearly said that it was an “advisory” and not a “rule”. I hope that the UH folks who spoke up then were advised well, as that would mean that the protest could be overruled quickly.

  488. Mau`u August 20, 2008 11:31 am

    tom mui –
i agree on the NEEDED, the bid package should be reviewed to see if it was required, i think one of the bloggers had a copy of the proposal and plans.
stay tuned folks its far from over

  490. Garret August 20, 2008 11:40 am

Back on 7/22 it was published that the Contractors License Board felt that the additional license requirement (the Sadowski rule) was just a guideline and not a rule.

Verna Oda, the board’s executive officer, said the board’s October decision is “informal” and “nonbinding” and is only a “guideline” for state agencies.

Hamocon, who said he received a recommendation from UH for his work at Les Murakami Stadium, said he never got a C-68FF license because the board told him twice he did not need it.

Oda said the board listened to Hamocon’s concerns about Sadowski but did not see a conflict of interest.

  493. Loa August 20, 2008 11:46 am

hmmm, practice must have gone into overtime today

  494. Manoa August 20, 2008 11:47 am

    Tom Mui, Thanks.
I raised the issue of the license because it looked like at least in form, there might have been a licensed entity. I also raised the issue of whether it was a defect in the bid not to have one– which is your point. Good analysis, especially since someone feels it is necessary for a board to take action to require the specialty.
There are a lot of very specialized licenses which are often ignored as common practice or met in form only as may have been done here. Afterall, experience may be more important than a particular license. And in practice, for all types of construction, there are continual technological changes for various systems that do not require specialty licenses, instead you look at the experience qualification. So as a policy matter it would be arbitrary to declare this bid defective.

“Another UH rule this year: When catching passes from the JUGS machine, helmets must be removed. That’s one way to assure that the receivers will be focused…”

Totally disagree. It wouldn’t simulate game-like conditions. No WR catches the ball without helmet on in a real game. I suggest trying to see and catch the ball when looking through your facemask. I believe DBess and RGM practiced that way with the JUGS machine and they were total studs. Correct me if I’m wrong though.
