Tuesday ramblings

majam pic

Nice to see Kelly Majam (with associate head coach Dee Wisneski, left, and assistant coach Kaulana Gould Williams, right) back in action.

• Softball fans have to like the enthusiasm of this year’s Rainbow Wahine. “A new year, new opportunities,” third baseman Melissa Gonzalez said. “I’m excited for the new year.”

• Looks like Jenna Rodriguez, mostly the designated player last year, will have an expanded role. She’ll play right field, as well as serve as the third pitcher behind Stephanie Ricketts and Kaia Parnaby.

• Found an NCAA College World Series T-shirt in the pile. It’s new, but a size Large. To enter the drawing, please post: Welcome back, Rainbow Wahine. Avis will choose a winner.

• Guess Todd Graham owes a thank-you card to the Warriors.

• If the SEC is so great, top to bottom, how come it has an unbeaten team every year?

• Football recruiting still is in a dead period. Things will begin heating up this weekend.

    Okay Fit den!

Heating up by this week end you say? Well the cars temp gauge read 62 degrees this morning…

  8. NCAA January 11, 2011 8:41 am

Looks like another murderer’s row for the Wahine Softball team. Nice article in today’s paper. It’s always good to read articles in the paper of individual athletes here in Hawaii. It makes up for all the depressing news we have.

  9. Pride. January 11, 2011 8:42 am

Pitt: Tulsa head coach Todd Graham accepted the head coaching job.

Poor tulsa. One day they lose their offensive coordinator to Clemson. The next day they lose their head coach to Pittsburgh.

  10. NCAA January 11, 2011 8:43 am

Wow Mr. Da Punchbowl Kid, your car runs cold!

  11. NCAA January 11, 2011 8:46 am

    Mr. Pride,

  12. NCAA January 11, 2011 8:48 am

I hope playing softball doesn’t give you a hunched back. Those two coaches sure look like they are afflicted.

  23. Pomai January 11, 2011 9:04 am

#19 – anklebiters I think it was Garret who said that the final poll is the pre-bowl poll, so that should mean that we finished the season ranked #24 in the BcS and AP poll and #25 in the coachs poll. What that poll means is we will not be ranked in the pre-season poll.

Then when two of my kids bought laptops, then they were really nice.

  36. NCAA January 11, 2011 9:41 am

You bought laptops from the Apple Store? Did you get a discount?

  37. zbm2 January 11, 2011 9:43 am

If all fails email corporate. When Home Depot first opened they used to come up to you and ask if you needed assistance. After a while you couldn’t find any help. i emailed corporate and went back there a week later and they had people greeting you at the door.

When Walmart first opened they had signs that if there are (I can’t remember the number) of people in line they would open another register to keep down the wait time. When I went there the lines were so long and they had a lot or registers that weren’t being used. So I emailed the head guy. I can’t remember his name but he did send me a reply. A few days later the signs were gone.

But for Apple i just go to their online store. Shipping is free.

  38. NCAA January 11, 2011 9:46 am

Buy online at Apple as a student or teacher and you get a discount plus the free shipping. Or go to fatwallet.com and get a percentage refunded to you if you purchase through their website.

    From yesterday’s blog:

    # Kekoa:

    January 11th, 2011 at 5:37 am

MW ~ Not too long ago, I had a short in our 2d car. D-1 recommended a mechanic who specializes in electrical auto wiring. So instead of paying big bucks to a dealership to run it thru their $65 diagnostic computer, I take it to this guy’s shop.

Takes him about 10 minutes to find it, fix it, and then he sez, “$5 bucks should cover parts and labor!” I was stunned to come upon a mechanic who was not tied to the Schedule, and ruled by the cash register.

Ask around. I’ll bet you can find one.

Yeah, Kekoa… thanks to both you and Wafan for giving me some positive words to keep searching. I’m sure there are guys out there like that. Trick is in trying to find them. I’ve got it narrowed down to somewhere along my dashboard, but in a freezing garage, it’s not as easy to find as it might be if it were warmer outside.

  46. Stephen Tsai January 11, 2011 10:21 am

I don’t mind if a mechanic charges a lot for labor. What I don’t like is if you go in for a flat tire, they come back later and say, for instance, you need a new starter. It’s like: Focus on one area, please.

KELLY MAJAM — YOU ARE TRULY AN INSPIRATION! I saw your short interview on the news last night. Your upbeat attitude and entusiasm are really impressive. At 70 yrs. old, I have health issues to deal with and sometimes feel sorry for myself, however after seeing and hearing you, I realize that I can’t fret and be negative. Thank you for teaching this old dog new tricks. You are truly a remarkable young woman. Aloha.

Thats because the mechanic needs to drive the car from the parked position to the garage or inside the working area. So essentially, the mechanic has to start the car some how right?

  68. Michigan Warrior January 11, 2011 11:42 am

#46… Right on, ST! That’s what they usually do in places like Belle Tire here. You go to fix a flat, and next thing you know, they have a whole laundry list of repairs that are in critical need of attention… like brakes, struts, sway bars, CV boots, etc.

We also caught one guy who bent a sensor bracket on a front wheel so that it started squeaking right as I left their shop. (It wasn’t squeaking when I went in to drop off the punctured tire.) My next door neighbor caught it and said it’s a trick they use to make you think you need brake work.

  69. NCAA January 11, 2011 11:42 am

I meant just staring at a parked car.

Anyway, if your car doesn’t start and you only hear a clicking sound then that is usually the battery is dead/bad. I remember my uncle telling me if the car doesn’t start and the battery is good, tap the starter with a hammer. If the car starts after that then you need a new starter.

  70. Michigan Warrior January 11, 2011 11:44 am

  80. nmdeadeye January 11, 2011 12:05 pm

Long time “lurker” first time poster. I know everyone was disappointed by the bowl game as I was, but I thought I would relate this story. I was a student at UH. I was there for the win against Iowa, the magical 1999 season, and several games in between. I reluctantly left my lifetime home in Hawaii for federal employment on the mainland in 2000.

My father (a UH season ticket holder), my 10 year old son, and I try to attend a mainland game every year, and as I live about 60 miles from Las Cruces, NMSU was our game this year. We got to witness a terrific performance, a shared WAC title, and the Haka afterwards. On the way to the parking lot, we crossed paths with Kamalu Umu. As he saw my son wearing a Hawaii jersey, Kamalu said “here little man,” and handed my son his UA game gloves. Needless to say, all three generations of our family were bugging out about then. It might have been a small gesture to some, but my son keeps asking me when football signups are, as he is excited to begin his football career.

I want to thank Coach and his players for the awesome memories they provided this year. I choose to focus on these, and the class his team showed; I’m already looking forward to next year.

  81. kev-1 January 11, 2011 12:07 pm

glad to have Kelly Majam back. I have been so inspired by her story. She is such a great representative of the UH. And she’s puuuurrrty to. Okay . . . I publically declare my crush on Kelly Majam.

  87. whitey January 11, 2011 12:26 pm

It was great to watch the Auburn team play a “clean” game as compared to da warriors. On the kick return, an Auburn players pokes the face of a duck, on another, kicks the head of a duck when he is on the ground, then another tries to spin the facemask when the duck is down. If this is acceptable, then da warriors no longer hold the title of being “clean”, but the title now goes to Auburn.

  88. Kazz January 11, 2011 12:26 pm

    Sorry JM,

NOT a fan of 25 point sets in volleyball, especially in men’s volleyball where the points and sideouts come much faster.

  89. whitey January 11, 2011 12:30 pm

Of course it was also great watching the ducks whose d coordinator stays with a 3 man rush and gives the qb all the time to pick them apart and a o coordinator who had 5 weeks to prepare for a “buddy ryan 6 pack” and thought he could win the game of smashmouth. But then again, the scenerio of the ducks looks very similar to the pre2010 warriors. And not going mention their “panty” tackling of the ducks.

  90. kruzen January 11, 2011 12:30 pm

  97. Mrs. A-House January 11, 2011 1:02 pm

Hi Everybody and Happy New Year to All!!

    Welcome Back, Rainbow Wahine!

    Hi Whitey –

Ditto your above post #87. I saw the Auburn player knee/kick the Oregon player on the ground. The injured Oregon player ran to the sideline bleeding from a large cut on the left side of his face and had to leave the field for assistance. Consequence? lame 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. A-House and I were angry and disgusted that this Auburn player, who the commentator stated has a history of being a “dirty” player, was allowed to stay in/continue to play instead of being immediately ejected from the game.

While it’s unfair to let a few stinking rotten apples contaminate the whole barrel, I hold you Auburn coaches responsible for permitting this type of unacceptable unsportsmanlike behavior/performance by your player(s) to fester throughout the season thereby tainting the NC victory promoting your obvious mantra…”win if we can, lose if we must, but always cheat.” ….coming up for air. Auburn…what is that??? the shade of a woman’s hair dye!? Cam, Scam, la di dah. That’s a whole separate issue…stay tuned.

Thanks for letting me vent. I feel better! Have a great day, everybody!

  98. Ralph January 11, 2011 1:06 pm

I doubt it is Mrs. A House! Head still spinning on motion and option plays, can’t remember to change the username

  99. NCAA January 11, 2011 1:12 pm

The Auburn player you mentioned that has a history of being dirty is not the same person who kicked/kneed the player.

  127. whitey January 11, 2011 4:12 pm

the flourescent yellow “O” looks good on the helmet, but the yellow feets are a reminder that they are resident mallard ducks. migrating mallard ducks have orange feet. this is just for info and not trying to make fun of the ducks, but very hard when lying on the floor “quacking”.

  128. whitey January 11, 2011 4:15 pm

most of the players on both teams were in the upper echelon of recruiting, but most of them look like just ordinary players. nothing special except for 3 of them and newton is not one of them. he is another j russell.

  129. wafan January 11, 2011 4:15 pm

As much as some may complain about UH sports at least there are not any Warriors/’Bows/etc. being investigated for the rape of a 16 year old girl. No charges have been filed so the player is still in good standing.

They have hushed up past cases without detriment to the players and teams.

    I guess money screams.

  130. whitey January 11, 2011 4:17 pm

bisides #23 for the ducks, #90 for “assburn”, the other that looks good is #5, rb for “assburn”.

  131. whitey January 11, 2011 4:20 pm

wafan, how you??? know you are having snow, but at least not floods. you right about money, but bigger picture is what kind of presidents/chancellors do these schools have and that is where you find your #1 problem.

  132. wafan January 11, 2011 4:25 pm

    Hi whitey!

Getting a bit slick outside. And, colder.

Do not know about the chancellor/president/AD but something is definitely fishy about these situations at the school. Definitely not the first time.

How are you and everyone else on Maui?

  133. Kazz January 11, 2011 4:40 pm

Woah! Lawrence Taylor back in the news again? 😆

  134. Kazz January 11, 2011 4:41 pm

    Wafan,

    $$$$$$$ can cover up ANYTHING.

  135. whitey January 11, 2011 4:47 pm

wafan, so far everyone is ok. as far as presidents at the big schools, look at what the ohio state president says about the bcs and how the rest don’t qualify. then how he shoots himself in the toe and has the ad explain why the “crooked players” are eligible to play in the bowl. he says he will shut up about athletics, but how can he take this stance when he already is biased and is set in the ways the bcs is run. money, yes, but it is the administrators who are scared to do the right thing because they will have the athletic donors on thier butts.

  136. whitey January 11, 2011 4:52 pm

not to make fun of the championship officiating, but watch the last run by assburn and how the back judge just stands there and says nothing. he can see the entire play without any obstructions versus the line judge who cannot see the play and calls a td. the replay reverses the decision. i no like make fun, but doesn’t the big 10 say they will play uh only if we import the refs. what the hell, the refs for this game was from the big 10. they are more blind than the orignal blind man, wally tsutsumi.

  137. whitey January 11, 2011 4:55 pm

It will be interesting to see what Rocky Long will do as the head coach for the San Diego Aztecs. In ten years at the helm at the University of New Mexico, he took the team to five bowl games. The San Diego area is known as a gold mine for recruiters. An aggressive campaign by the new coaching staff to keep some of the local talent close to home may yield huge dividends for the knew staff.

  143. Pride. January 11, 2011 7:10 pm

Former Hawaii FB player Kim McCloud was let go at Baylor as the cornerbacks coach. Phill Bennet was named the new DC there over the weekend as is bringing in some of his own guys. Kim played at UH and graduated from high school in Los Angeles. He spent seven years coaching and recruiting the L.A. city area for Nevada. He” the type of coach that may fit in well at Hawaii if a defensive opening were to become available. Being able to report some of the inner city kids from L.A. and San Diego is absolutely important to the success of the Hawaii football program. I think BHFan2 has mentioned several times before about the improtance of being able to recruit this area. With McCloud and Rainbow Cliff, we can cover Southern California.

As of right now I have no idea who else offered Alo. Brandon Huffman from scout.com is the guy who just reported the news so I dont know too much yet. Here are results from the came camp Mariota went to this off season.

    USC Offensive Review

LOS ANGELES — Here is a look at the strong showings on offense from the USC Nike Football Training Camp Sunday.

    QUARTERBACKS

NIKE Coaches’ QB MVP: Chad Jefferies, 6-1 ½, 184, Glendora (Glendora, Calif.)

    Best College Prospect: Jefferies

Most Accurate: Justin Alo, 6-1, 171, Carson (Carson, Calif.)

    Sleeper That Emerged: Alo

Best Underclassmen: Matt Morin, 6-2, 191, Chaparral (Temecula, Calif.)

  173. Curt January 11, 2011 10:58 pm

Alo’s accuracy must’ve gotten Rolo’s attention. I wonder who the other QB is?

I’m sure this topic has been covered earlier…but anyway, reading that BSU-head coach, (Petersen), has really impressed me; I was thinking that he without doubt would have taken the Stanford job especially since it’s the PAC10/12, and an BCS conference; that says alot about coach Petersen’s personal values/dedication…and to me, he’s got both feet on the ground and why he runs such a great program. Just sayin.

Yes, blogs are a way to “try out ideas and get them out there fast.” But, you still have to communicate what you want to convey. Maybe I’m looking at your post too closely, but blogs should use proper grammar, spellling, etc., else bloggers may get distracted. (I don’t usually see this as a problem on blogs, particularly industry- or cause-focused ones.)

If you do not mind me asking, just what exactly are you using to prevent junk comments? I noticed your web site is good and free from all the spam bots leaving comments. I have got another website myself, and I like to keep comment forms open so I do not have to come on and approve them all the time, however the spam plugins I have experimented with are usually failing to prevent even the most obvious and simple spam comments. Is there anything at all reasonable out there that does a good job or is my only hope to keep them moderated or just close them all together? Thanks, Jacob Migliorisi

For those of you not familier with the ‘TIMNEY’ name, they have been making top quality replacement triggers for firearms since 1946. They are now offering a new archery trigger for 2010. I received one yesterday to T&E. I haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet, but at first glance it looks like another quality product that we’ve grown accustomed to over the years from Timney. The leather top grain cowhide buckle strap appears durable, comfortable, and well stiched.

I watch the news daily, sometimes all day if I can. It does affect my mood too, now that you mention it. I would probably be much happier ignoring the fact that our President has just about started world war three with his ignorance. I don’t know what’s better. Getting invaded and not knowing about it until me and my family is shot and killed in front of my eyes, or having the opportunity to head for the hills and hide because I knew they were coming.

You also state that reliance on analgesics is due to addiction. This is just patently false. They are used because they work. If a patient is addicted to pain killers they will not be given them if that is an option. If you are referring to non-prescribed drugs these are both not very addictive and the main obvious advantage is they are far more convenient than acupuncture (that and they actually work).

  367. Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Acupuncture has certainly not been an all out success, clinical trials have shown the efficacy of acupuncture to be very low, with only a few trials showing positive effects, which can likely be related to difficulty in giving placebo acupuncture. There may be some benefit in it but it is small.
