UH assistant basketball coach Brandyn Akana earned his bachelor’s degree at BYU-Hawaii, where he was a point guard, and his master’s at UH.

But when it comes to Saturday’s football game between UH and BYU, Akana wants there to be no doubts.

“I’ll be cheering for the University of Hawaii,” said Akana, whose brother (Jarinn) and wife (Joselyn) were former UH athletes.

Linebacker Aaron Brown has a request: “We need seats in the seats.”

According to the schedule, this is a “travel” day for BYU.

• Another lively practice. The players have been in a feisty mood all week.

• As part of his post-practice stretching routine, cornerback Mike Edwards plays catch with quarterback Cayman Shutter. Edwards really should be considered as a two-way player. He is sure-handed.

me

• Bryant Moniz attended practice, in a wheelchair. He was warmly greeted by coaches and players. His right ankle is in a cast. He joked that his availability was a game-day decision.

mopix

• Former UH coach Dennis McKnight also was at practice. Players and coaches love him. He’s loud and aggressive, but just so entertaining. Even when he’s discussing the price of dip in Edmonton, it’s impossible not to be enthralled.

• Graduate assistants are hired on the calendar year, meaning their deals expire on New Year’s Eve. Inoke Funaki, who works with the offense, is scheduled to earn his master’s in public administration in May. He has a busy schedule. He works as a security guard from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.; then helps coach the scout team, break down videos and prepare the scouting reports; then attends classes. He also is married.

• Equipment specialist Al Ginoza said no — NO!— on whether white helmets are an option for Saturday’s game.

Have not been to a UH game yet – from the mainland but the seat issue definitely needs to be addressed. There is something about a cheering crowd that can really stir the emotions. Were UH games always so weakly attended? What is the difference if so.

The games against BYU were always something I looked forward to when I was growing up, I remember all those years of losses (some agonizingly close!) and then finally the breakthrough wins. It is great for UH to be able to play BYU again and I hope that the fans fill the stadium.

UH vs. BYU in Aloha Stadium, with a winning record and Hawaii Bowl spot at stake for UH…this is a HUGE game!

  23. James November 30, 2011 8:18 am

Lol…Aaron brown, “we need seats in the seats”??

  24. Garret November 30, 2011 8:20 am

    Old Diver,

I finally caught up with the blog and saw your post from 1 or 2 blogs ago. I was off the blog because things got really busy for Thanksgiving.

Right after I made my last post I had to decorate the Christmas tree with my 2 girls, then put all the Holiday lights up outside of my home…next year I’m going to get a taller ladder instead of risking my neck so much. Then we had 4 people over for Thanksgiving dinner. The next day was Black Friday and then we were in Vegas on Saturday and Sunday.

ESPN3 is awesome–I watched the game in a Vegas hotel room while my wife gambled downstairs. I will really miss ESPN3 when UH joins the MWC.

  25. WarriorNY November 30, 2011 8:23 am

Nice to mention of a guy from Molokai. The Akana family are great people.

  27. Garret November 30, 2011 8:29 am

Rick Reilly says that UCLA is going to offer $20 mil over 5 years for Chris Petersen. He also says that the UCLA medical center will provide good care for Petersen’s “special needs kid”…but from what I’ve read in the past Petersen’s son is healthy now. Petersen’s son had a brain tumor removed 10 years ago with the cancer spreading to his spine, but he’s apparently healthy now.

Boise State fired their AD a long time ago and they need a new AD quickly, with his first job being to make sure that Petersen is happy in Boise.

Petersen already got 1 top Hawaii recruit (Ioane) to go to Boise…how much would he recruit Hawaii if he was at UCLA? I don’t really want to find out…

    http://thebiglead.com/index.php/2011/11/30/rick-reilly-thinks-ucla-is-sweetening-the-offer-to-chris-petersen-with-assurances-for-his-special-needs-kid/

  28. truegreen November 30, 2011 8:31 am

Woo hoo! My very own blog post! Hehe, you know I had to come out of lurking to post to today’s blog.

In fact, this blog describes the very process by which I picked this handle 5 years ago or so. I was trying to find a way to affirm my loyalty to UH and being a “true blue” Hawaii fan despite going away to the mainland for college. But I couldn’t be “trueblue” because of course blue is the color of our hated rivals from Provo.

    Thus…”truegreen” =)

Happy BYU game week everyone! See you at the stadium. Ironically, I’ll be sitting in the “blue” section. Maybe gotta bring some green spray paint with me Saturday…hmmm…

Hope all you tsaikos are doing well. Have a good one!

  30. Buffoman November 30, 2011 8:36 am

    Garret,

If Peterson does leave BSU, I would hope that the ink is dry on the Big East invitation as I don’t know if a new person could sustain that kind of winning established by Peterson. The guy is simply a winner. If he takes key staff people with him, well…

So, what’s your opinion as to whether he goes or stays at BSU?

  31. Dan-O November 30, 2011 8:38 am

Me thinks a good sized crowd (40,000+) is equal to a 5-7 point advantage for the Warriors….a full stadium will boost our boys to play at another level.

  32. Nalani November 30, 2011 8:45 am

AlaWai – No offer from UH yet. Cal Lee likes him a lot it seems. Not sure about the other coaches. Sorta quiet. But good things ahead no doubt. We are trusting in the Lord that he has an awesome place for Pono to play.

  33. wait a minute November 30, 2011 8:46 am

Nalani, is Kahai going to re-join the team next year?

  34. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 8:46 am

    Morning…

  35. Nalani November 30, 2011 8:54 am

It doesn’t look like Kahai will go back for his Sr year. He was ineligible this season, as are all Engineering students their Junior Year. He is doing well in Engineering and wants to focus on classes. He has interned for a great company for the last few summers and can work more hours if he’s not playing football. He has trimmed way down to like 220 so I don’t think he wants to put all that weight back on. We would love for him to play though, but its his decision.

  36. Hilo-Warrior November 30, 2011 8:56 am

Do we know how many tickets were distributed thus far for this weeks game?

  37. Derek November 30, 2011 8:58 am

Time is marching quickly. Earlier in the season Jim Donovan said he would wait until the end of the season of decide Coach Mack’s status. Well, the end of the season is this Saturday? Wait. Maybe, the end of the season is the Hawaii Bowl if somehow our Warriors can win this week. Either way, recruiting is in a bad way and with each day we lose another day. Limbo world is not good. I had read yesterday that the Wazzu coach got the pink slip and that they want to get a new coach in place within 2 weeks!!!! Holy Palousse, Batman!!! That’s fast. At UH it would take at least 1 month, probably more like 2 months to fill the vacancy. By that time, letter of intent day, Feb. 2nd will have come and gone.

To me, Donovan should have made the decision at least a month ago to either say Mack will be back next season, or extend it, or not bring him back for his final season. This indecision is just killing the life blood of the program, the recruits. Yeah, Donovan is a nice guy too and nobody wants to be the bad guy and he wants do the patient thing. Is that the right thing to do? I don’t know. Other people can chime in.

  38. Garret November 30, 2011 9:02 am

    Buffoman,

I would expect Boise State to decline if Petersen leaves, but I thought that would happen the last 2 times their head coaches left for bigger-budget schools. I think that Boise State would still have a good program because of all they have built up, but they wouldn’t be at the level they are now.

Petersen turned down Stanford last year and turned down UCLA 4 years ago. However, UCLA is now going to be getting the Pac-12 TV money to offer Petersen whatever he wants for himself and his assistants…UCLA will go all-out for him right away and then try for Houston’s coach if he says no.

Money for assistant coaches has always been a big deal to Petersen, even more so now that he lost both his offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator not too long ago for big-budget schools.

  39. AlaWai November 30, 2011 9:06 am

Derek: Everyone here knows that JD declared that he would wait till the end of the season. Your post will not change that. It does cast a pall on an otherwise exciting week of anticipation. JD has proven to be a man of his word. Go Warriors!

Some of you guys used to complain about the mobile phone services around the stadium. Has that improved?

and, is there wi-fi in and around the stadium on game days?

  42. Couch potato November 30, 2011 9:29 am

somewhere in the south parking lot area there is an att wi-fi. haven’t walked in that area to try it out.

  43. Couch potato November 30, 2011 9:30 am

    make that a rr wi-fi.

  44. tommui November 30, 2011 9:34 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

DEREK – The decision for a new coach is not JD’s to make. He can make recommendations but it is up to the BofR and the President of UH.

It is my understanding that the people in the Upper Campus wants to wait till the end of the season and then make a decision. JD cannot say “blame the people upstairs” – though that is what is happening.

True – it will hurt recruiting, specially in the high school ranks and I suppose we will have to go after JCs in the interim.

  45. Hawaiianbod November 30, 2011 9:36 am

Nalani – thanks for sharing Pono’s video. I’m sure he will receive numerous offers, hopefully one of them is from UH. Best of luck to Kahai! He will succeed in whatever his heart desires.

  46. performance coach November 30, 2011 9:41 am

Hope that cooler and wiser heads prevail in regards to our Coaches. They are doing a great job and should receive raises and extensions. Let’s get a reality check here. We have lost three awesome NFL level receivers (yes, I still think Rodney Bradley is signed), two great running backs, with one playing for the Super Bowl Champions, an excellent safety, who should still be with the Bills, and lost a host of Offensive Lineman. How well do YOU think a team should do after losing that kind of personnel? Sadly, all our hopes were pinned on our QB Moniz to sort everything out. Unfortunately, drive-killing dropped passes and fumbles and injuries were too much for him to overcome. Leading us to our current position. Still, despite our technical problems and numerous injuries, this season is still very very meaningful. We are playing for something till the very end. No doubt we have several stars on our current team, with many young rising stars who look to be future NFL prospects, John Hardy Tuliau and Art Laurel just to mention two. The future looks very bright for UH, especially since the MWC will be no better than the WAC, as the members will almost surely be comprised of former WAC members and bottom dwellers UNLV and Wyoming. As far as attendance goes, everybody needs to get used to dwindling numbers. There are many factors, one being heavy handedness by Stadium Security. They have arrested and trespassed some of the students. Trespassing them means they cannot return for a year. Trespass one student, then you also take out 10 of their friends, they’ll go elsewhere to have fun. I also don’t see some of our military friends, I think someone might have made a call to base commanders to ask them tell their young men to behave, and well, you know base commanders, they don’t tell anyone to behave, they just tell everyone “No one goes or you will be talking to me!” Not very subtle. Also, after 911, we cannot bring in food, the very high cost of food in the Stadium, the very complete coverage of ALL sports available on Television and Internet. All of these are causing the decline of attendance. When I played at Kam in the 70’s, we played Waianae and Radford in the prep bowl in consecutive years, 36K+ attendance. That’s high school. We also had like what, 5 channels on TV? Come weekend time everyone was simply starved for something to do. Now we have way too many choices, and we are on sports overload. Yeah, if we were undefeated more people would come, but not enough to fill the stadium. Still, there may be ways to get back big attendance. First of all, any good Hawaii Football players need to stay home and play for Hawaii. If you are good, you will play and like Poly Mom said “If you good the NFL will find you.” If these players stay home then all their friends and family will come to the games to see them play. This will boost attendance. But if we continue to send our best elsewhere, we have no right to complain about UH, because we are not doing what’s needed to make the situation any better, we are just making it worse. So if you think the UH team in underperforming, just ask yourself this: What have I done to help this team get better?

  47. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 9:44 am

    Couch Potato,

Thanks… I have to wonder. If the stadium provided wi-fi throughout their grounds would that improve attendance? This new generation of students and young adults are different from any of the generations before. They are techno-codependent and text/blog/tweet constantly. They need to be updated constantly or update constantly.

If the entire stadium and parking lot was wi-fi accessible, I wonder if they could sell parking by the hour on the off days? Park under a shady tree and surf the net. Buy coffee and snacks at a concession or some enterprising cart…

  48. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 9:46 am

BIK in SportsHawaii made this comment

    http://www.sportshawaii.com/sh/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=41152

We been hearing more and more about the “empty student section” at Aloha stadium. I’ve found several other schools facing similar problems. The one thing that was common was that all of these schools had losing records. Although UH technically does not have a losing record, we have fallen way short of preseason expectations.

So on to the millennial generation. This is the generation currently encompassing most college students and early entries into the current workforce. They have been known as the “car seat” generation because this is the first generation that had been required to be in car seats when traveling. This is the generation that wore helmets to ride bikes and the generation where everyone got a trophy for participating. In this generation, everyone was a winner.

Unlike the previous generations (veterans, baby boomers, and Gen Xers), this is the most technologically savy generation. Life is defined in 142 characters and they were hardly ever required to think for themselves because mommy and daddy usually made the decisions for them. Of course, there exceptions, but for the most part, this has been a generation that has been tended to.

One interesting tidbit I read was that in the millennial generation, they were not taught to lose. With everyone getting a chance to participate and get a trophy, everyone was in fact, a winner.

Given so, are we really that surprised that no students are showing up for football games? ….and furthermore, are we really that surprised that most of the people criticizing them are from the previous generations?

Still remember the 1981 season when U.H. was 7 and 0 and had just broken into the Top 20. BYU was up next. There was chatter everywhere on campus from Hamilton Library to chemistry class at Bilger Hall. Tomey dubbed his running backs the Edgar Allen and To(loumu) show. And the papers were really trumpeting the game because everyone was excited. Sad to say U.H. lost that game and lost to Pacific the following week. That was 30 years ago.

Mr. Pomai, please have me down for Saturday’s game, BYU 35 and UH 0 — but will no less be cheering for the hometeam.

If you want the young ones in the seats, you gotta find ways of using social media.

In June 2009, Nielsen released the report, “How Teens Use Media” which discussed the latest data on media usage by generation. In this report, Nielsen set out to redefine the dialogue around media usage by the youngest of Generation Y, extending through working age Generation Y and compared to Generation X and Baby Boomers.[84] One of the more popular forms of media use in Generation Y is through social networking. In 2010, research was published in the Elon Journal of Undergraduate Research which claimed that students who used social media and decided to quit showed the same withdrawal symptoms of a drug addict who quit their stimulant

Mahalo for the birthday wishes! My friend & her sister will be here today and we will be partying for days > weeks, since her birthday is the 13th. We’re all going to the game on Saturday to cheer the guys on. Hope to see you next year at one of our T-Gates.

    Aloha no, Slugger

  75. Slugger November 30, 2011 10:43 am

    …and it’s JoJo’s birthday tomorrow, too!

  76. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 10:43 am

It will be interesting to see what Mike Leach can do at Washington State.

  77. Slugger November 30, 2011 10:44 am

    ST,

It’d have to be some place other than where it was planned, tho. Open dates are hard to find during the holidays. Your house?!? 😀

  78. A-House November 30, 2011 10:48 am

    Nalani:

much appreciation for the update on Kahai and Pono!

For Kahai, the A-House family wishes him the very best in all he pursues and we know he will do well! I was not aware that Engineering students could not participate in sports in their Junior year – makes a lot of sense academically!

For Pono, keep up the great work and make yourself more valuable so UH coaches will come a calling!

  79. Matt November 30, 2011 10:49 am

A post from a Utah fan on BYU’s blog — “Keys to the game: Let Hawaii jump out to a huge first-half lead. Once they get comfortable, go for the kill.”

Good golly, is there anyone out there that DOESN’T know about our team’s second half kanak attack?

  80. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 10:52 am

Interesting Coach stuff “Challenges of the Millennial Generation” for coaches

… again a find of BigIslandKurt @ sportshawaii

  81. BigWave96744 November 30, 2011 10:56 am

Chris Petersen is a Cali dude who QB’d at UCDAVIS. He already schooled the Oregon and Washington schools. The only thing that could prevent him from taking the UCLA job is if he were raised a Trojan fan. I predict he goes West instead of staying with the Donks and Big East.

Pomai, 2pm kickoff is a perfect time for Koolaid

    Warriors 51 – Cougs 28

    Hohoho

  82. A-House November 30, 2011 10:57 am

    an Omen:

Yesterday as I was going home on Pali Hwy, as I came around the corner, just pass the Philippine Consulate, I saw this huge rainbow, perhaps the largest I have ever seen, stretched across the width of Nuuanu Valley.

Passing Waokanaka, another smaller rainbow appeared and it seemed to touch the forest and Pali Hwy and all the cars heading in both directions.

Another 1/2 mile up, there was another rainbow that did the same.

Approaching Nuuanu reservior, another large rainbow appeared and it to stretched across the width of upper Nuuanu valley.

For me, it was like the small rainbow I saw in San Diego for the 1992 Holiday Bowl; aa very positive sign for UH!

  83. BigWave96744 November 30, 2011 10:59 am

Nalani, Kahai got his priorities right. That Engineering degree will take him far.

  84. Stretch November 30, 2011 11:18 am

Nalani – please tell Kahai, if he hasn’t already, to learn how to golf. very important for “marketing”

  85. bleedgreen November 30, 2011 11:21 am

Aaron Brown, this is BYU coming to town!!! Only empty seats you will find, if any, will be in the student section. Perhaps the yellow section too. Well, it won’t be a full house. It’s too bad its been many years since Aloha Stadium sold out (Pre-PPV). I remember Aloha Stadium sold out for an Air Force game. Air Force!!! Hard to imagine how times have changed.

  86. Nalani November 30, 2011 11:23 am

    Thx BigWave

Stretch – you like one beefy body guard on your next golf session, just call him! He has gone out a couple times only. ha.

  87. Slugger November 30, 2011 11:29 am

    Nalani,

Mahalo for the video of Pono. Good to hear he had great internship and is working toward his Engineering degree.

My Aunty & Uncle will be at your concert this month in SoCal.

  88. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 11:30 am

Brian Harsin would take the Boise job for $2M and that would sustain their dominance.

If Petersen passes on $4M a year, Boise fans should begin the construction of a temple dedicated to the worship of his image. Joking, but not really.

  89. Slugger November 30, 2011 11:32 am

    #87: s/b Good to hear Kaha’i had a great internship…

  90. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 11:35 am

Good to see Mike Leach back in the game.

Wish it were here, but Wazzu needs him a lot more.

  91. Couch potato November 30, 2011 11:39 am

go petersen go! take the money! live the city life. $20 million! 😯

  92. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 11:43 am

I kinda hope Petersen say No…Just to see the loyalty and a BCS school getting the middle finger.

  93. Couch potato November 30, 2011 11:43 am

    you wonder when Inoke sleeps.

  94. Couch potato November 30, 2011 11:45 am

i kinda hope petersen says yes, just to see how the dominoes fall.

  95. jm2375 November 30, 2011 11:47 am

Happy Birthday, Mrs. SailorBlue and fellow Redskins fan, Mrs. BHF2!!!

  96. Iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 11:48 am

He’s said no to UCLA and Stanford before…maybe he just enjoys Boise and being the little guy who embarrasses the big boy BCS schools.

  97. kev-1 November 30, 2011 11:54 am

As much as UH fans are bred to hat Boise, I have so much respect for what Peterson has done there. When Hawkins left, it became evident that the master mind was Peterson. Although I hate Boise as a Hawaii fan, I admire Peterson – damn good coach. I would love to see him rebuild UCLA.

  98. kev-1 November 30, 2011 11:55 am

Maybe Brown and some of the other LBs and linement should walk around campus asking students “What? You going game?” And if they say no, than slap em!

  99. Shoko November 30, 2011 11:57 am

I think the only PAC-12 school that would be of interest to Petersen would be Oregon.

  100. Garret November 30, 2011 12:00 pm

Dish Network (several are here) subscribers in Hawaii just got 3 new HD channels:

    RETRO

    MGM

  101. Garret November 30, 2011 12:02 pm

Tom Cable to UCLA? Former Raiders head coach and UCLA assistant coach who has some baggage in his recent past…

Does this mean that Petersen told the UCLA reps who saw him last night that he wasn’t interested?

Rumors are swirling that Seattle Seahawks Offensive Line and Assistant Head Coach Tom Cable is being considered for the now vacant UCLA head coaching job.

Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times tweeted that Cable’s name is being “bandied about” to replace Rick Neuheisel. Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com also quotes several UCLA sources that there is mutual interest between Cable and the school.

    http://www.ktvb.com/sports/Former-Raiders-coach-Cable-headed-to-UCLA-134760078.html

  102. HawaiiMongoose November 30, 2011 12:05 pm

IWWTHM, remember that Boise State is so desperate to become a big boy BCS school that it’s willing to join a dying east coast football conference, and potentially sacrifice its non-football sports by putting them back in the Big Sky. The giant-killer role may be appealing to Petersen, but I suspect the giant role is even more appealing.

Aside from money considerations, I could see Petersen taking the UCLA job because last year and this year were the “payoff years” at Boise State, giving him his best chance to make a run at BCS bids and possibly even a national championship. Next year the Broncos’ cupboard will be comparatively bare. The team graduates its starting QB, top two running backs, top two receivers, three of five starting offensive linemen, and nine of eleven defensive starters. Even a strong program will struggle with that much player turnover.

  103. Slugger November 30, 2011 12:07 pm

    mih,

That was an interesting article about the Millenial Generation.

  104. d1shima November 30, 2011 12:17 pm

    Happy Birthday Mrs. Sailor Blue!

    Happy Birthday Mrs. bighilofan2!

  105. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 12:18 pm

Money doesn’t matter to Petersen since he doesn’t have the free time to enjoy it.

    The guy is a workaholic.

  106. d1shima November 30, 2011 12:23 pm

…it prolly matters to Mrs. Petersen.

  107. Shoko November 30, 2011 12:24 pm

Petersen at times has worked 80 hours per week. Is he a workholic? Yep. But I’m sure his wife doesn’t have a problem spending it. 😉

  108. Couch potato November 30, 2011 12:28 pm

how about coach mack? money matters? does he have free time to enjoy it? workaholic? i would think all head coaches and all coaches for that matter are workaholics.

  109. LizKauai November 30, 2011 12:29 pm

    performance coach… mahalo.

  110. Couch potato November 30, 2011 12:30 pm

take the money, save it up. then buy land in idaho’s version of ponderosa pines or a farm area like green acres.

  111. LizKauai November 30, 2011 12:31 pm

Nalani- always good to see you! Thanks for the STUDENT athlete insights!

  112. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 12:35 pm

I don’t know if Petersen plans to work till he dies. If he wants to retire at a reasonable age to go do other things, $$$ matters.

$1.5M per year and the annual raises etc may be enough for him.

  113. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 12:36 pm

    Mongoose,

Weren’t the cupboards relatively bare in 2007 when we beat them? Didn’t take them much time to “reload”.

  114. primo123 November 30, 2011 12:40 pm

shucks! I was hoping Mike Leach was coming to Hawaii…..

  115. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 12:40 pm

    There’s also the loyalty factor.

Petersen has a child who needs special medical attention.

  116. primo123 November 30, 2011 12:41 pm

any word on the STUDENTS? they coming to the game? Might be Hawaii’s — “Bowl” game…..

  117. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 12:42 pm

And, if you’re wondering, June Jones does not plan to change jobs.

“I have a job and I have a contract,” Jones told the WB.

  118. primo123 November 30, 2011 12:43 pm

we cant afford JJ…..booohoooo!!….woulda coulda shoulda………..

  119. d1shima November 30, 2011 12:44 pm

Two important things for a HC

  120. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 12:44 pm

He also can be credited to taking BSU to the big time. He could be the new Paterno that takes a relatively ho hum nobody really knows program into national prominence/championships etc.

  121. primo123 November 30, 2011 12:44 pm

hawaii needs gimmick offense to compete……any coaches out there left?…..would coach kenny wanna come?…..navy is big time compared to uh…..

  122. AdmrVT November 30, 2011 12:45 pm

#37 & #44 – Yes, the real culprit(s) here is the BoR. Their indecision will hit recruiting for at least 1 year, even if the retain & extend Coach Mac, and longer if they decide to make a change. If they change coaches, expect a 2 – 3 year “rebuild” and a long road back, if they get lucky and can find a good coach for less money. A lot of “ifs.” Of course, we are assuming that they care. Are they sending us a message that they don’t?

  123. chopsueyboy November 30, 2011 12:45 pm

    Seawalker

    Memory of 1981 season…

Lots of family and friends were season ticket holders for football.

Planned our wedding around UH football.

Wedding when UH had an away game

VHS video recorder just came out at $1200

and we promised family and friends they could

watch the game the following day as we opened presents.

Came back from our honeymoon in time for BYU game.

  124. d1shima November 30, 2011 12:46 pm

According to the “experts”, Hawaii already uses a “gimmick offense”

  125. primo123 November 30, 2011 12:46 pm

chris petersen is boise st football…..who were the two previous head coaches there before him? can’t even remember them….and when they went on to other programs, they couldn’t duplicate their boise successes…..it’s been petersen’s doing all along.

  126. d1shima November 30, 2011 12:48 pm

    Hawkins

    Koetter?

  127. d1shima November 30, 2011 12:49 pm

    gugu’d it

    Koetter

  128. primo123 November 30, 2011 12:51 pm

#124….yes….hawaii’s is a gimmick offense….but the real issue is….who’d want to come and play for coach nick?……or coach mack…..it’s coming down to recruiting…..they depending too much on hawaii’s recruits to play the skill positions…..really, we need more speed in those positions and that will only come from the mainland.

  129. primo123 November 30, 2011 12:53 pm

UH’s Board of Regents will suck us dry………..like vampires……..all the life blood out of our bodies…….

  130. cavewarrior November 30, 2011 12:54 pm

BoR thinks/acts strategically, for the long term.. Or should anyway.

  131. d1shima November 30, 2011 12:55 pm

The Former Coach was a good fit at the time because his offense was able to utilize the local boys in the skill positions and thus build local interest. He was able to win with those guys by tinkering with it and that was another plus.

This offense will succeed to the degree that the triggerman will take it.

    Succeed or suck seed

  132. Couch potato November 30, 2011 12:57 pm

  141. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 6:00 pm

Hmm.. another article regarding the Millennial generation…

    http://www.meetingsfocus.com/tabid/162/ArticleID/16191/Default.aspx#top#top

Simple put, we gotta find a way to talk their language… engage them at where there head is… develop cyber pods in and around the stadium… hang outs where they can social network and feel invited. They are doers but not initiators. ASUH may have to set up booths for them… include light snacks and refreshments as part of the benefits of their activity fees… wi-fi and get them texting.. blogging… communicating to all the other students out there… get them to market to others because it’s what’s happening.

  142. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 6:02 pm

    32K tickets sold so far…

  143. Hawaiianbod November 30, 2011 6:14 pm

    helloooooooooooo

  144. tommui November 30, 2011 6:14 pm

I heard that Ivin Jasper’s name mentioned today. Of course his experience was not with the Run and Shoot but he was good passer at UH.

  145. ai-eee-soos November 30, 2011 6:16 pm

just in case you wanna follow the speculation:

“Leach will be paid a base annual salary of $2 million, with supplemental income of $250,000 a year, plus performance incentives, athletic director Bill Moos said.

CBSSports.com first reported the deal between Leach and Washington State.”

  146. uh4eva November 30, 2011 6:16 pm

Wow #68 Pomai I remember Odom being very undersized at 5’10” 210-215 but very aggressive and loves to hit

  147. Pomai November 30, 2011 6:20 pm

uh4eva yes he was but he played twice the size he was. I loved his wwf count down when he sacked the QB.

  148. ai-eee-soos November 30, 2011 6:21 pm

    Whaaaat – from espn

“If UCLA wants to go to a bowl game with a losing record, the NCAA ruled Wednesday that it can.

The Bruins can earn a spot in the Rose Bowl if they beat Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game on Friday. If they lose and fall to 6-7, they likely will end up in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco.”

  149. d1shima November 30, 2011 6:25 pm

    Das WAC! 👿

  150. jm2375 November 30, 2011 6:36 pm

Was the rest of the Pac-12 South(?) that bad that UCLA won the division with a 6-6 record? Sounds like the NFL. 😕

  151. A-House November 30, 2011 6:38 pm

That would be very disappointed if the UH BOR is the entity holding up the situaiton with Coach Mack.

They would supercede the Chancellor and Atheltic Director – that’s what I call “micro-manage”. It’s like they would decide if a college Dean stays or goes!

What the heck does a Dean do any way except sit in the office? Exception is the College of Engineering Dean who spent a lot of time away on trips using $$$ from the “donors” pot.

  152. A-House November 30, 2011 6:40 pm

    #150:

what was their “division record”? worst than USC, but USC got post-season ban because of the Reggie Bush thingy!

  153. Dan-O November 30, 2011 6:41 pm

Well, if you add the 20,000 core Warrior fans….and the 10,000-12,000 people coming from Laie, that would give you the 32,000 figure.

To reach 40,000…we will need about 8,000 additional people either cheering the Warriors, or coming to say good-bye to Mack and his staff.

  154. d1shima November 30, 2011 6:41 pm

Pac South going get two new HC’s next year.

  155. Shoko November 30, 2011 6:43 pm

So, can Hawaii request a bowl waiver should they not win this weekend?

  156. Shoko November 30, 2011 6:47 pm

I think the reason for the bowl waiver is that UCLA scheduled 13 games this season.

  157. d1shima November 30, 2011 6:47 pm

    Das so shame

  158. Ralph November 30, 2011 6:48 pm

why UCLA? well, USC on probation, and the rest of the South Pac 12 made up of Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Arizona State, nuff said.

  159. Ralph November 30, 2011 6:49 pm

UCLA scheduled only 12 games, their 13th is the Pac 12 championship. The 6 win rule apply to their regular schedule of 12 games.

  160. A-House November 30, 2011 6:49 pm

    #148:

if the NCAA can be that flipant about changing the eligibility rules for post-season play (UCLA), then they should go back and review their decision on UH being ineligible for the men’s VB national championship based on their new rule, that was created nearly 8 months after the season ended and make it retroactive 5 years, saying that UH should have known that Costas was a member of a “professional team”, played, but never paid. How can UH comply with a “rule” that did not exist when they recruited and signed Costas!!

  161. Shoko November 30, 2011 6:58 pm

Ah, good point Ralph. USC probation seems to reverberate throughout the conference.

  162. PolyMom November 30, 2011 7:02 pm

Agree with you A-House. I have pondered that question for many many years.

  163. PolyMom November 30, 2011 7:03 pm

Hope you all had a good day today. I was busy stimulating the economy on the big island.

  164. A-joe November 30, 2011 7:15 pm

JD needs to go after the NCAA and reinstate our MVB National Championship!

  165. A-joe November 30, 2011 7:16 pm

    PolyMom-

My brother mentioned you stopped by his shop a little over a week ago to purchase a Koa Urn.

Small world. Only in Hawai’i. =)

  166. Workplace Signs November 30, 2011 7:27 pm

The safety signs Perth can be surprisingly excellent thing to get. This works out well and is really appealing. Should you wish on using the old sign patterns with regard to house décor, this can be a quite fashionable item to get in your residence, garage, or recreation room.

  167. Curt November 30, 2011 7:42 pm

It would be great if we could get 35 to 40k fans to the stadium this Saturday. Let’s go everyone. Da Warriors need your support!

  168. Curt November 30, 2011 7:44 pm

    iwwthm

    Who’s Bruce Harsin?

  169. d1shima November 30, 2011 7:52 pm

    Curt,

Was OC at B$-You then moved to Texas as the co-OC. Regarded as a good offensive coach

  170. d1shima November 30, 2011 7:53 pm

    😳

    Bryan, not Bruce. 😉

  171. d1shima November 30, 2011 8:02 pm

We’re #1! WooHoo! Yeah, baby! WoooooHooooo!!!!

    😆

  172. Curt November 30, 2011 8:18 pm

    Thanks d1shima.

  173. kev-1 November 30, 2011 8:19 pm

#140 Liz . . . Green? I thought they were wearing black with white pants like they did last week. I would rather have the green too, but wasn’t even aware the team still wore those. All we have seen this year is black and white.

I guess practicing in school colors is enough, huh?

  174. kev-1 November 30, 2011 8:21 pm

Wow . . . Leach will be getting WAY more than his predecessor. I think Wulff was making something like $600K base, and Leach is expected to get $2 mil? WOW!

  175. Old Diver November 30, 2011 8:22 pm

During the Von Appen era the same questions came up about who was holding up his contract extension. Like today many are blaming the BOR. Anyway I called the BOR at that time and was told the BOR was not holding up anything. This was because the BOR can only take action on items that are on it’s agenda. Items are placed on the agenda by the President. Like now there was never any item concerning the football coach on the agenda. The BOR executive secretary at the time was a personal friend and I personally knew one of the Regeants. Hiring and firing the coach is the responsibility of the University President and Chancellor with input from the AD. By the way the person holding up Von Appens contract at that time was then AD Hugh Yoshida. The BOR was not happy for having to take the flack for Yoshida. Remember the BOR is an advisory and approval body only. It is the administration which runs the university and it is their responsiblity for developing a road map of the future.

  176. papajoe2 November 30, 2011 8:48 pm

#174 kev-1, That’s because of the new tv contract that the PAC12 got. They get plenty money now. I think something like 20 mil per year, per team.

  177. kev-1 November 30, 2011 8:50 pm

papajoe2 . . . isn’t that nuts? I just read that. Could you imagine what UH could do with that kind of annual money just from a TV contract? It really puts things in perspective when you think of the haves and have nots of college football.

  178. papajoe2 November 30, 2011 8:51 pm

I think maybe we should go independent. We can have more home games and 100% PPV revenue to help with the finances. How much does Oceanic charge businesses, like bars and resturants, for PPV? I hope its a lot more than the home PPV.

  179. papajoe2 November 30, 2011 8:53 pm

#177 kev-1, yup, and next year we have to pay for travel expenses for our opponents in the MWC AND probably lose our revenue from PPV or split it with the rest of the MWC teams.

  180. kev-1 November 30, 2011 9:00 pm

I know this has been shot down thousands of times, but I wonder why Hawaii is so unattractive to the Pac12. If Utah and Colorado can make it, UH can, right? So people really think Oregon St. and Washinton St. are heads and shoulders above UH? Is it purely geography? Academics? I don’t know.

  181. kev-1 November 30, 2011 9:01 pm

I think the only way independence would work is if you had a tv deal like BYU and Notre Dame. The Hawaii TV market is just simply too small.

  182. ugg boot clearance November 30, 2011 9:10 pm

I am a just a passer-by. OK, Leave a something in your blog just for your return visit.

  183. ai-eee-soos November 30, 2011 9:13 pm

    small kine note:

How good are the PAC-12 South teams?

Well, they’re sooo good, THREE of them are getting new coaches:

    Arizona; Arizona State; and UCLA.

and the North already got one new one.

  184. ai-eee-soos November 30, 2011 9:19 pm

    re #183.

    that’s 4 out of 12 coaches; that’s what 1/3 – new coaches ?

  185. jm2375 November 30, 2011 9:27 pm

papajoe – #178 – we’ve been through this subject many times. Instead of more home games, there would be more away games, esp during conference season. No one wants to come to Hawaii during the conference season. We’re already having problems scheduling teams in December, esp those from conferences with championship games. BYWho fans are already complaining of their “weak” schedule because they are independent.

  186. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 9:43 pm

    #181,

    Bingo.

Also, not sure why BYU fans are complaining of a soft schedule. They don’t get automatic access to a BCS bowl game like ND so why schedule murderers row? If anything it is independents who get the most out of “strategic scheduling”.

They play teams like Texas, Notre Dame, Oregon State, Boise State all in one season. That is plenty hard.

  187. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 9:48 pm

BYU is fortunate that the WAC schools filled the schedule.

Especially since BYU’s withdrawal of entering its non-football teams in the WAC led to the departure of Fresno State and Nevada (and eventually Hawaii), kept the Mountain West alive and essentially gave the WAC a death sentence. (Or so we thought, I suppose, since LaTech and Utah State did very well this year.)

Anyway, BYU would be in really big trouble if the WAC teams colluded and decided not to schedule BYU this year.

  188. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 9:48 pm

    kev-1,

We add nothing to TV value (then again nor does Utah Lol). UH isn’t high up there academically. Our FB program has enjoyed moderate success at best.

Now Utah is an interesting candidate. Why Utah? No huge tv value, the school isn’t necessarily head over heals better than UH, their FB program is obviously very successful with 2 BCS Bowl wins over the past 8 years.

You can google the article but basically the PAC was told to add Colorado to force Texas into accepting a PAC invite. When that fell through, the “next best” school was Utah. Long story made short.

  189. Capitolist/WassupDoc November 30, 2011 9:50 pm

I attended the Board of Regents monthly meeting earlier today. Jim Donovan spoke after last fiscal year’s audit report was presented. Although the questions directed towards Jim were tough & touchy in some instances, he answered them straight up – especially those dealing with current conference realignment discussions as well as tv contract.

No mention was made as far as I can recall about the coaching staff although several Regents asked a number of questions about revenue sources and student support.

Another interesting factoid I learned today – the Manoa campus is no longer considereda commuter campus with students still living with their parents. Nearly 35% of all undergraduates live in UH housing and another 40% – including graduate students – live within three miles of campus in Manoa, Makiki, Kaimuki, McCully, Mo`ili`ili, Palolo, Waikiki & Kapahulu.

Finally, be prepared for public comment meetings on significant increases is campus parking fees.

For those of you who are interested in learning more about how Regents are selected lr want to apply or take part in the selection process, click https://www.hawaii.edu/rcac/ Although the deadline has passed for submitting applications for the four seats opening up at the end of this fiscal year, you can find out how to take part in the screening process.

NOTE: Another batch of vacancies will be coming up in the next fiscal year.

Having tracked the Regents almost as long as I have the Stadium Authority, I can honestly say that using the Regents Candidate Advisory Council screening system passed in 2007 has significantly improved the quality and the qualifications of Regents. Abercrombie doesn’t like the system any more than Lingle did, but it is the law. The Governor has to selected people from a list – like judicial nominees – rather than by picking her/his political buddies.

  190. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 9:53 pm

I think Utah was a good pickup by the Pac-12.

The football team was knocking on a BCS berth a couple of years ago.

    It’s a pro city.

What’s more, it’s an Olympic city.

There are a lot of very good hotels.

And because it’s a Delta hub, it’s very accessible.

  191. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 9:53 pm

    WsupDoc,

What did Jim say about conference realignment?

  192. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 9:54 pm

    Thanks, Wassup.

Indeed, it is true. Parking prices are going up.

It was mentioned today that the parking fine is cheaper than paying hourly rates near campus. That’s about to change.

  193. homey ℞ November 30, 2011 9:55 pm

On another note…no Steinlager pure on sale. It’s going to be a champagne and Heineken t-gate.

  194. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 9:57 pm

By the way, the Regents do not need to vote on a coaching change. It can be solely left to the president.

Also, the Regents are not involved in the hiring as long as the next contract does not exceed three years and $500,000 per annum.

  195. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 9:59 pm

And, yes, UH does offer TV value, as a late-night choice.

There can only be a certain amount of late-night West Coast starts before it serves as inconvenience. Not so for UH, with the time difference.

  196. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 10:00 pm

    kev-1,

if you are interested there is an interview a few posts down which recorded an interview with Washington State’s AD Jim Sterk. He basically admits that TV executives told the PAC to invite Colorado to break up the B12 and absorb Texas and aTm into the conference.

Didn’t work out obviously and the rest is history.

    http://www.mwcboard.com/www/forums/index.php?showtopic=35918

  197. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 10:06 pm

True, all schools have some kind of TV value.

Hawaii doesn’t have enough TV value to be considered for the PAC12. Utah was invited for being the next best choice and in the right time/place. It’s better to be lucky and good. 🙂

It’s not easy for a school that is not in a large media market to command high TV ratings/big following. Boise State and BYU are 2 that come to mind. Can’t blame UH for that anymore than you can blame them for existing in the middle of the ocean.

If we were in San Diego and had the same type of success etc, we would probably have a much easier time getting an invite.

  198. d1shima November 30, 2011 10:11 pm

Two year wait for restroom renovation at Maunalua Bay?

    😯

    Whole lotta holdin’ goin’ on!

  199. Capitolist/WassupDoc November 30, 2011 10:14 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme:

Jim said that he cannot say what’s going to happen because it’s out of his control and things can change practically on a daily basis. He said that the situation across the entire NCAA is very tenuous, but that he will communicate directly with Keith Amemiya & Virgina Hinshawnon a regular basis as reliable information comes in. He specifically referred to the Big East Conference dealing with a number of options and alternatives – and that what was thought to be a settled deal a year ago is in a different state of flux today. My term, not his, but the same thing.

The Regents cannot get involved in these discussion without providing the public an oppoartunity to get involved. That’s the Sunshine Law.

  200. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 10:15 pm

The TV value isn’t in where you reside, because the assumption is your area will support you with attendance. Eugene, Pullman and Corvallis are not big markets.

The TV value is in who will watch you. If a team is a relatively consistent winner, entertaining and in a good time slot, there’s value.

  201. Capitolist/WassupDoc November 30, 2011 10:17 pm

Whoops!! Hinshawnon = Hinshaw on discussion = decisions

Time to go to bed. At least seven hours of meetings before heading off to tomorrow night’s volleyball matches.

  204. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 10:18 pm

But as I’ve said before, the sports-TV market is over-saturated.

I think HBO, MTV, Bravo, etc., would be better choices. Different audience, and the program(s) can be turned into reality shows.

The Kardashians are more well known than, say, Mike Leach or Urban Meyer.

  205. d1shima November 30, 2011 10:19 pm

  206. Kevin November 30, 2011 10:19 pm

    Kev-1,

UH STILL has the green tops with black trim from previous seasons, but they are in the previous design pattern. According to Coach Mack, UA has them set up for NEW green tops for next season.

So technically they DO have green tops they can wear with the new white pants.

  207. PolyMom November 30, 2011 10:20 pm

@ Stephen Tsai, for those of us who live on the LEFT Coast we would like the games to start at 5 Hawaii time. We pay 225.00 a year for ESPN game plan to watch UH games. Five makes it 8 in the evening for us. But Hawaii would have a HUGE fan base if the East Coast could watch the games. They love Hawaii as a state and would rather watch UH rather then the PAC 12 schools. Most east coast folks dislike anything from the left coast. Just the way it is.

This summer I sent a girl from Iolani to several volleyball camps. SDSU, won an award there. Utah she also won an award there. Cornelle she got jammed up due to weather and was only there a day and a half. Did well there also. But you are so right about Utah…gorgeous dorms and facilities. And now they got Uncle Norm.

This coming year USC loses 20 scholarships the following year ten more. We will see what happens. Bet things won’t be so happy at the Coliseum. We could beat them next year if things go south there.

  208. Kevin November 30, 2011 10:21 pm

    D1,

BTW, I don’t believe ANY facility on the EAST side will take that long. Sure that’s what they say now, but just like the fireworks ban… if something happens out THERE people will have their way.

  209. Kevin November 30, 2011 10:22 pm

    Kardashians are NOT real celebrities.

It’s like saying those karaoke singers on American Idol and X-Factor are potential “musicians”… 😆 😆 😆

  210. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 10:24 pm

    PolyMom:

    I feel your pain.

But I think people in the sun — Liz Kauai, SteveM — they probably have a different opinion.

  213. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 10:28 pm

I didn’t know there were standards for celebrityhood.

When Spicoli from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” becomes an acclaimed Oscar winner, anything is possible.

Point is, if UH had a deal with MTV or HBO, the players and coaches would become famous. And fame equates to more enrollment and more money.

  214. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 30, 2011 10:30 pm

Well one of the things about a station like MTV or the Food Network is you watch it to watch subject related things.

I wouldn’t want Emeril Lagasse Bam’n it on TLC or Animal Planet. Lol.

  215. kev-1 November 30, 2011 10:32 pm

  217. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 10:35 pm

MTV focuses on young people. MTV Two-A-Days was a hit. (Hey, it earned an undersized defensive end a scholarship to UH.)

  218. 3-Prong November 30, 2011 10:36 pm

Gonna be busy attending the 3 UH events. Is it true that they don’t serve beer at the Stanley when it’s a NCAA Playoff game? Doesn’t matter. Have some quick ones in the car then enjoy the WAHINE EXPERIENCE. Come on gang. Be a real fan and show up!!!!!

If you have a Diet Coke, you have to pour it into an NCAA cup.

  220. Kevin November 30, 2011 10:56 pm

    Kev-1,

I personally don’t see why not. Yes the previous designs do NOT have the new poly tattoo, but the tapa triangles on them, but they’re still UA.

New green tops with a black trim and white pants SHOULD be our primary home colors and the white tops with green trim and the BLACK pants with green trim should be our primary road colors.

Then throw in the all blacks for special games and mix and match with all whites or green top and black bottoms, etc…

We HAVE a good amount of color combos that SUIT our primary colors. No NEED to be something we are NOT with all kinds of non-sense colors.

  223. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 11:00 pm

Why can’t we have a “reality” program around our Rainbow Dancers and Cheerleaders, since Cheerleading isn’t a sanctioned NCAA sport? Maybe we could generate interest and $$ there?

  224. Kevin November 30, 2011 11:01 pm

A WHITE helmet CAN be done to match the current design.

    See here for a BEAUTY:http://www.prideofhawaiisports.com/shop/cpop_011a.html

Heck, the Wahine softball team debuted their “HPD” biker helmets last season. All white with black trim on the front.

  225. Kevin November 30, 2011 11:02 pm

Cheerleaders are considered student-athletes and fall under the guidelines of NCAA compliance.

Rainbow DANCERS on the other hand are not, last I heard so any such ‘reality’ show could be done on them.

    (giggles… that’s what she said)

  226. Kevin November 30, 2011 11:04 pm

CHECK THAT… I truly consider the cheerleaders as student-athletes… well OURS anyway considering the amount of competitive athleticism they display at home and on national competitions.

  227. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 11:04 pm

I thought Cheer-leading didn’t qualify for gender equity status and therefore wasn’t a “real” sport? Why should they then be considered student athletes? Don’t misunderstand me, I am all for Cheer-leading to be a gender equity sport.

  228. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 11:06 pm

If the Rainbow Dancers can be incorporated into some kind of programming and promotion, that might help boost program popularity and sales of all kinds of other stuff besides tickets…

  229. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 11:07 pm

    I don’t judge.

I think it’s important to follow what’s popular.

That’s why I think Grammys and Oscars should go to songs and movies that move the most units or sell the most tickets. But, of course, awards go to movies that nobody watches.

Oh, we can all pretend we care about standards, but there’s a reason they make sequels to Paranormal Activity and not Shakespeare In Love.

  230. Kevin November 30, 2011 11:08 pm

I was sitting in the student section for Wahine volleyball earlier in the year and when a UH marketing rep came looking for students to participate in the on-court contest after the second set, immediately two girls jumped up and they were wearing “HAWAII CHEER” shirts. Then as they were leaving, the guy they were with (a male cheerleader) reminded them they cannot because of NCAA compliance and falling under student-athlete guidelines.

I asked later and they do fall under that category.

Hell, I didn’t even know who or what a Snooki was until less than a year ago. I thought Twilight was based on a TV series and not a book and then I was corrected about True Blood and I thought it was a murder documentary on A&E.

Every UH president eventually realizes that for all of the great and important accomplishments on Upper Campus, little matters without a forum.

And, thus, every UH president starts attending sporting events.

    Never fails.

And that is why none of the TV stations sent a reporter to the Regents’ meeting today, and that our paper sent a sports columnist.

  235. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 11:25 pm

Got to do some research on how the more successful schools are now marketing their football programs.. Our students have too much on their plates with school, tests, homework, part time jobs, full time jobs, some are already parents, and, as such, they aren’t going to show unless there is more to entice them. I’d have a big tent out for all active students to socialize and network right outside the main entrance. … Have TV screens so that they can sit outside and watch the game if they don’t want to go inside right away… let them come and go…

  236. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 11:26 pm

    http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/ncf/story/_/id/7294551/fired-ucla-bruins-coach-rick-neuheisel-says-school-finance-high-expectations

In an interview with Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio, Neuheisel likened the UCLA coaching job to “taking a knife to a gunfight” when it comes to trying to compete with elite-level programs such as crosstown rival USC.

    The Herd with Colin Cowherd

Rick Neuheisel talks about being fired by UCLA, how he would describe his tenure with the school and losing 50-0 to USC.

    More Podcasts »

“I think every program across the country has to make a determination as to what their expectation level is and then finance that expectation level, and in some places those numbers don’t jibe,” Neuheisel said.

Athletic director Dan Guerrero said Monday that UCLA is “in a different league” financially for hiring its next coach. Neuheisel made $1.25 million a year and UCLA is expected to go beyond $3 million a year for Neuheisel’s successor.

Guerrero also said that upgrades to UCLA’s practice facility, where currently there is no 100-yard field, are in the works.

Said Neuheisel: “You want to make sure you are getting the same things that those teams where the expectation level lies are getting so that you can compete at that level.

  238. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 11:31 pm

    MIH:

I think what would help UH is more competition.

At San Jose State, the media relations director has to call reporters to beg for even the most basic coverage. Not a problem here. UH doesn’t have to worry about letting people know who the top players are or when its teams will be playing.

And, so, when there’s a slump, it’s not prepared to market for new customers.

But you can bet if BYUH became Division I and fielded a football team, UH will have to learn aggressive and creative marketing.

  239. papajoe2 November 30, 2011 11:33 pm

#185 jmxxxx, I know we’ve been through this many, many times before, but here is my take on the “going independent” subject. Why? We would have to pay the MWC teams to travel, even the lower drawing teams too. By going indep., we save money. We lose or may have to share $2.5 million of our PPV money with the MWC teams, leaving us none or very little. The MWC’s TV contract gives us nothing or very little. By going indep., we could get our own TV contract (not sharing) which is why I asked earlier “how much is businesses paying Oceanic for PPV?” If it is the same as home PPV, then they should raise the price since a business would have more fans there than a home would (in most cases) and probably making a profit. UH would also have to petition the NCAA and do what it can to have our season start a week earlier than the rest of the country (big TV deal?). This would give us another week to schedule a team that is in a conference. We could schedule conference teams in the begining of the year (4, 5, or even 6 games), take our byes and play other independent teams and a DII or 2 games in the later part of October and all of November. Get a contract signed with the 3rd place team of a conference that played in a championship game, to be played on the last Saturday in December (another big tv payday?) in Hawaii. It would be the last regular season game in the nation against a marquee (sp?) team with a winning record (home attendance up?). The teams could be rotated among different conferences like, PAC 12 in 2013, Big 12 in 2014, etc.. We would offer them free charter flights from LAX since we would have to be paying the MWC teams anyway and maybe hotel rooms or at least block off x amount of rooms for them. All they have to do is get to LAX, which is why I think the PAC 12 or MWC or even WAC teams would go for that rather than an SEC team, but you never know with the big paydays that they are getting nowadays. Imagine a PAC 12 team with no chance for the championship game but still have a chance to go to Hawaii if they win their last game or 2. Probably excite their fans too. What fans that can afford it, wouldn’t want a reason to go to Hawaii in December. This would NOT be a bowl game but a regular season game. It would also take advantage of the Hawaii Rule where if you play in Hawaii, you are allowed a 13th game. I forgot to mention, that by UH getting to start their season 1 week before the rest of the nation, it would give the most traveled team in the nation year after year, an additional week of rest to focus on school and heal minor injuries. There are a few games that start before the rest of the nation like the Kick Off Bowl (I think that’s what you call it) so, why not Hawaii? Just my “outside the box” opinion.

The problem with going independent is..

What teams can you book between October 1st and Nov 30th?

    Stephen Tsai:

    November 30th, 2011 at 10:24 pm

    PolyMom:

    I feel your pain.

For those of us with deadlines, I’d love for games to start at 5 p.m., too.

But I think people in the sun — Liz Kauai, SteveM — they probably have a different opinion.

Yup. But’s that just those who are still around to complain. Perhaps U.H. Admin should ask what people in the mauka sidelines and both end zones today think. In any event, I would love to see the mauka sideline season ticket renewal numbers after the first year of the 5:00 pm starts. We already know the overall attendance tanked.

Then you reported a poll sent to season tickets holders about desired start times after the first train wreck–they must have missed me– but they moved it to 5:30 pm the next year. Too little too late. Then this year it was quietly moved back to 6:00 pm. I am hoping for a quiet shift to 7:00 pm next year…esp. if no extra TV money…or you can get a late night national broadcast slot.

  243. madeinhawaii November 30, 2011 11:40 pm

If these 12 team conferences are going to 13 games like the PAC 12… they won’t want to give up their only bye week to play Hawaii during those months.

Besides BYU will there be any other independents after next year?

  244. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 11:41 pm

I agree that independence isn’t a very good option.

Once again, everything at UH — salaries, attendance, etc. — seems to be money-based.

But look at travel subsidies as an appearance fee, and it’s not that bad. $150,000 to $175,000 for an opponent? That’s a discount compared to the high six-figure guarantees most schools must pay out.

  245. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 11:42 pm

If they moved it to 7 p.m., I would boycott.

Besides, I don’t think many people will be around at 11 p.m. to hear the alma mater.

  246. kev-1 November 30, 2011 11:44 pm

kevin . . . I completely agree with your uniform assessment. And that is a SICK (good kine) white helmet too. I really don’t understand why we don’t have one. Where is the vision?

  247. Stephen Tsai November 30, 2011 11:45 pm

I always like to say the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team would be the best UH program to go independent.

Every time I mention that to Shoji, he almost — almost! — gets a white hair.

  248. Not an Expert November 30, 2011 11:47 pm

ST is correct about TV market. If a product can be enjoyable, interesting, a good story line and a winner, people will tune in. “No can” I believe can. UH needs to sell ESPN on a unique program with UH football being the main course and during that main course there will be side dishes that will make people be entertained and have interaction to be tuned in. So many things could be done. Maybe INDEPENDENCE an alternative if you can get ESPN to be involved.

  249. Kaimuki Kid November 30, 2011 11:56 pm

If they were to make a white helmet, I think.that pearlescent white would be cool with metallic green flecks and the H logo.

  250. papajoe2 November 30, 2011 11:58 pm

#243 mih, Isn’t the 13th game the championship game? I am hoping that one of the teams that are not in the championship game come here to play their 13th. No one can tell who that would be until their conference games are done.

  251. papajoe2 December 1, 2011 12:02 am

4 independent teams, 2 DII teams, and 2 byes covers October and November. Start on Aug. 25, 2012. 6 games in a row through September. 1 more game on December 1 if not a conference team that has a championship game or “my” 3rd place conference team.

  252. Robert December 1, 2011 12:07 am

ST, wen you wen go turn off da blog on the computa today, it stay remine me of wen I was small kid and my mudda wen tell me I stay talk too much. she wen go tape my hands for make me shut up.

  253. papajoe2 December 1, 2011 12:08 am

    whaaatt???

  254. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 1, 2011 12:14 am

I’m sure UH and ESPN will be in talks if/when UH starts to win like Boise and commands that national following. I read many comments here and elsewhere that hint or state that Boise’s dominance and national following is fragile with Petersen holding all the cards.

I have to agree that without Boise winning, they don’t really bring anything to the table. The same can be said of UH. It’s winning program AND time slot or nothing at all. BYU on the other hand can position itself because of its history, name, and off course the church.

Lets work on getting or grooming a Coach Pete and winning like they do in Boise because we aren’t that close right now. Winning cures all.

  255. papajoe2 December 1, 2011 12:16 am

I never heard any announcements about the Wahine Volleyball game being on TV. Anybody knows?

Not sure Notre Dame, Army and Navy will continue to be independent.. and they have established a number of rivalries that may make it hard to book them regularly. All three schools are quite a distance away, too.

  258. al December 1, 2011 12:23 am

    5 pm kickoff…i would.

at least 75% of all football games are played in the broad daylight. that’s how the game was meant to be played. that does not deter the die hard fans across the nation.

  259. al December 1, 2011 12:24 am

i thought that navy was big east bound?

  260. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 1, 2011 12:26 am

  268. Pride. December 1, 2011 2:20 am

Wow! Rich Rodruiquez, Urban Meyer, and Mike Leach. Is that the definition of go BIG or go HOME?

  269. Pomai December 1, 2011 2:54 am

Actually the best start time would be 4:30 PM = 9:30 PM on the east coast and 7:30 PM on the west coast, which would be the best TV coverage times for UH football.

  270. Pomai December 1, 2011 3:10 am

The average temp in Honolulu for the months of Sept, Oct, Nov. are 88, 87, and 85 with the average trade winds of 5 to 7 mph which drops the actual temp 4 to 5 degrees. These average temps are taken at Noon at the airport.
