UH assistant basketball coach Brandyn Akana earned his bachelor’s degree at BYU-Hawaii, where he was a point guard, and his master’s at UH.
But when it comes to Saturday’s football game between UH and BYU, Akana wants there to be no doubts.
“I’ll be cheering for the University of Hawaii,” said Akana, whose brother (Jarinn) and wife (Joselyn) were former UH athletes.

• As part of his post-practice stretching routine, cornerback Mike Edwards plays catch with quarterback Cayman Shutter. Edwards really should be considered as a two-way player. He is sure-handed.
• Bryant Moniz attended practice, in a wheelchair. He was warmly greeted by coaches and players. His right ankle is in a cast. He joked that his availability was a game-day decision.
• Former UH coach Dennis McKnight also was at practice. Players and coaches love him. He’s loud and aggressive, but just so entertaining. Even when he’s discussing the price of dip in Edmonton, it’s impossible not to be enthralled.
• Graduate assistants are hired on the calendar year, meaning their deals expire on New Year’s Eve. Inoke Funaki, who works with the offense, is scheduled to earn his master’s in public administration in May. He has a busy schedule. He works as a security guard from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.; then helps coach the scout team, break down videos and prepare the scouting reports; then attends classes. He also is married.
• Equipment specialist Al Ginoza said no — NO!— on whether white helmets are an option for Saturday’s game.

Hey gang – Pono’s Senior Season highlight video for your viewing pleasure! ha.
The games against BYU were always something I looked forward to when I was growing up, I remember all those years of losses (some agonizingly close!) and then finally the breakthrough wins. It is great for UH to be able to play BYU again and I hope that the fans fill the stadium.
UH vs. BYU in Aloha Stadium, with a winning record and Hawaii Bowl spot at stake for UH…this is a HUGE game!

I finally caught up with the blog and saw your post from 1 or 2 blogs ago. I was off the blog because things got really busy for Thanksgiving.
Right after I made my last post I had to decorate the Christmas tree with my 2 girls, then put all the Holiday lights up outside of my home…next year I’m going to get a taller ladder instead of risking my neck so much. Then we had 4 people over for Thanksgiving dinner. The next day was Black Friday and then we were in Vegas on Saturday and Sunday.
ESPN3 is awesome–I watched the game in a Vegas hotel room while my wife gambled downstairs. I will really miss ESPN3 when UH joins the MWC.
Nice to mention of a guy from Molokai. The Akana family are great people.

Rick Reilly says that UCLA is going to offer $20 mil over 5 years for Chris Petersen. He also says that the UCLA medical center will provide good care for Petersen’s “special needs kid”…but from what I’ve read in the past Petersen’s son is healthy now. Petersen’s son had a brain tumor removed 10 years ago with the cancer spreading to his spine, but he’s apparently healthy now.
Boise State fired their AD a long time ago and they need a new AD quickly, with his first job being to make sure that Petersen is happy in Boise.
Petersen already got 1 top Hawaii recruit (Ioane) to go to Boise…how much would he recruit Hawaii if he was at UCLA? I don’t really want to find out…

Woo hoo! My very own blog post! Hehe, you know I had to come out of lurking to post to today’s blog.
In fact, this blog describes the very process by which I picked this handle 5 years ago or so. I was trying to find a way to affirm my loyalty to UH and being a “true blue” Hawaii fan despite going away to the mainland for college. But I couldn’t be “trueblue” because of course blue is the color of our hated rivals from Provo.

If Peterson does leave BSU, I would hope that the ink is dry on the Big East invitation as I don’t know if a new person could sustain that kind of winning established by Peterson. The guy is simply a winner. If he takes key staff people with him, well…
So, what’s your opinion as to whether he goes or stays at BSU?
Me thinks a good sized crowd (40,000+) is equal to a 5-7 point advantage for the Warriors….a full stadium will boost our boys to play at another level.
AlaWai – No offer from UH yet. Cal Lee likes him a lot it seems. Not sure about the other coaches. Sorta quiet. But good things ahead no doubt. We are trusting in the Lord that he has an awesome place for Pono to play.

It doesn’t look like Kahai will go back for his Sr year. He was ineligible this season, as are all Engineering students their Junior Year. He is doing well in Engineering and wants to focus on classes. He has interned for a great company for the last few summers and can work more hours if he’s not playing football. He has trimmed way down to like 220 so I don’t think he wants to put all that weight back on. We would love for him to play though, but its his decision.
Do we know how many tickets were distributed thus far for this weeks game?
Time is marching quickly. Earlier in the season Jim Donovan said he would wait until the end of the season of decide Coach Mack’s status. Well, the end of the season is this Saturday? Wait. Maybe, the end of the season is the Hawaii Bowl if somehow our Warriors can win this week. Either way, recruiting is in a bad way and with each day we lose another day. Limbo world is not good. I had read yesterday that the Wazzu coach got the pink slip and that they want to get a new coach in place within 2 weeks!!!! Holy Palousse, Batman!!! That’s fast. At UH it would take at least 1 month, probably more like 2 months to fill the vacancy. By that time, letter of intent day, Feb. 2nd will have come and gone.
To me, Donovan should have made the decision at least a month ago to either say Mack will be back next season, or extend it, or not bring him back for his final season. This indecision is just killing the life blood of the program, the recruits. Yeah, Donovan is a nice guy too and nobody wants to be the bad guy and he wants do the patient thing. Is that the right thing to do? I don’t know. Other people can chime in.

I would expect Boise State to decline if Petersen leaves, but I thought that would happen the last 2 times their head coaches left for bigger-budget schools. I think that Boise State would still have a good program because of all they have built up, but they wouldn’t be at the level they are now.
Petersen turned down Stanford last year and turned down UCLA 4 years ago. However, UCLA is now going to be getting the Pac-12 TV money to offer Petersen whatever he wants for himself and his assistants…UCLA will go all-out for him right away and then try for Houston’s coach if he says no.
Money for assistant coaches has always been a big deal to Petersen, even more so now that he lost both his offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator not too long ago for big-budget schools.
Derek: Everyone here knows that JD declared that he would wait till the end of the season. Your post will not change that. It does cast a pall on an otherwise exciting week of anticipation. JD has proven to be a man of his word. Go Warriors!

DEREK – The decision for a new coach is not JD’s to make. He can make recommendations but it is up to the BofR and the President of UH.
It is my understanding that the people in the Upper Campus wants to wait till the end of the season and then make a decision. JD cannot say “blame the people upstairs” – though that is what is happening.
True – it will hurt recruiting, specially in the high school ranks and I suppose we will have to go after JCs in the interim.
Nalani – thanks for sharing Pono’s video. I’m sure he will receive numerous offers, hopefully one of them is from UH. Best of luck to Kahai! He will succeed in whatever his heart desires.
Hope that cooler and wiser heads prevail in regards to our Coaches. They are doing a great job and should receive raises and extensions. Let’s get a reality check here. We have lost three awesome NFL level receivers (yes, I still think Rodney Bradley is signed), two great running backs, with one playing for the Super Bowl Champions, an excellent safety, who should still be with the Bills, and lost a host of Offensive Lineman. How well do YOU think a team should do after losing that kind of personnel? Sadly, all our hopes were pinned on our QB Moniz to sort everything out. Unfortunately, drive-killing dropped passes and fumbles and injuries were too much for him to overcome. Leading us to our current position. Still, despite our technical problems and numerous injuries, this season is still very very meaningful. We are playing for something till the very end. No doubt we have several stars on our current team, with many young rising stars who look to be future NFL prospects, John Hardy Tuliau and Art Laurel just to mention two. The future looks very bright for UH, especially since the MWC will be no better than the WAC, as the members will almost surely be comprised of former WAC members and bottom dwellers UNLV and Wyoming. As far as attendance goes, everybody needs to get used to dwindling numbers. There are many factors, one being heavy handedness by Stadium Security. They have arrested and trespassed some of the students. Trespassing them means they cannot return for a year. Trespass one student, then you also take out 10 of their friends, they’ll go elsewhere to have fun. I also don’t see some of our military friends, I think someone might have made a call to base commanders to ask them tell their young men to behave, and well, you know base commanders, they don’t tell anyone to behave, they just tell everyone “No one goes or you will be talking to me!” Not very subtle. Also, after 911, we cannot bring in food, the very high cost of food in the Stadium, the very complete coverage of ALL sports available on Television and Internet. All of these are causing the decline of attendance. When I played at Kam in the 70’s, we played Waianae and Radford in the prep bowl in consecutive years, 36K+ attendance. That’s high school. We also had like what, 5 channels on TV? Come weekend time everyone was simply starved for something to do. Now we have way too many choices, and we are on sports overload. Yeah, if we were undefeated more people would come, but not enough to fill the stadium. Still, there may be ways to get back big attendance. First of all, any good Hawaii Football players need to stay home and play for Hawaii. If you are good, you will play and like Poly Mom said “If you good the NFL will find you.” If these players stay home then all their friends and family will come to the games to see them play. This will boost attendance. But if we continue to send our best elsewhere, we have no right to complain about UH, because we are not doing what’s needed to make the situation any better, we are just making it worse. So if you think the UH team in underperforming, just ask yourself this: What have I done to help this team get better?

Thanks… I have to wonder. If the stadium provided wi-fi throughout their grounds would that improve attendance? This new generation of students and young adults are different from any of the generations before. They are techno-codependent and text/blog/tweet constantly. They need to be updated constantly or update constantly.
If the entire stadium and parking lot was wi-fi accessible, I wonder if they could sell parking by the hour on the off days? Park under a shady tree and surf the net. Buy coffee and snacks at a concession or some enterprising cart…

madeinhawaii, i don’t think the aloha stadium authority or whoever makes the decisions there will spend the bucks to make the entire stadium area fully wi-fi. especially being a venue that is not utilized to near capacity everyday. would be nice though. 🙂

Still remember the 1981 season when U.H. was 7 and 0 and had just broken into the Top 20. BYU was up next. There was chatter everywhere on campus from Hamilton Library to chemistry class at Bilger Hall. Tomey dubbed his running backs the Edgar Allen and To(loumu) show. And the papers were really trumpeting the game because everyone was excited. Sad to say U.H. lost that game and lost to Pacific the following week. That was 30 years ago.

Stanford assistant coach and four-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Chester McGlockton has died. The school said Wednesday that McGlockton died overnight of an apparent heart attack. He was 42.

Yesterday as I was going home on Pali Hwy, as I came around the corner, just pass the Philippine Consulate, I saw this huge rainbow, perhaps the largest I have ever seen, stretched across the width of Nuuanu Valley.
Passing Waokanaka, another smaller rainbow appeared and it seemed to touch the forest and Pali Hwy and all the cars heading in both directions.
Another 1/2 mile up, there was another rainbow that did the same.
Approaching Nuuanu reservior, another large rainbow appeared and it to stretched across the width of upper Nuuanu valley.
For me, it was like the small rainbow I saw in San Diego for the 1992 Holiday Bowl; aa very positive sign for UH!

As much as UH fans are bred to hat Boise, I have so much respect for what Peterson has done there. When Hawkins left, it became evident that the master mind was Peterson. Although I hate Boise as a Hawaii fan, I admire Peterson – damn good coach. I would love to see him rebuild UCLA.
Maybe Brown and some of the other LBs and linement should walk around campus asking students “What? You going game?” And if they say no, than slap em!
I think the only PAC-12 school that would be of interest to Petersen would be Oregon.

IWWTHM, remember that Boise State is so desperate to become a big boy BCS school that it’s willing to join a dying east coast football conference, and potentially sacrifice its non-football sports by putting them back in the Big Sky. The giant-killer role may be appealing to Petersen, but I suspect the giant role is even more appealing.
Aside from money considerations, I could see Petersen taking the UCLA job because last year and this year were the “payoff years” at Boise State, giving him his best chance to make a run at BCS bids and possibly even a national championship. Next year the Broncos’ cupboard will be comparatively bare. The team graduates its starting QB, top two running backs, top two receivers, three of five starting offensive linemen, and nine of eleven defensive starters. Even a strong program will struggle with that much player turnover.

#37 & #44 – Yes, the real culprit(s) here is the BoR. Their indecision will hit recruiting for at least 1 year, even if the retain & extend Coach Mac, and longer if they decide to make a change. If they change coaches, expect a 2 – 3 year “rebuild” and a long road back, if they get lucky and can find a good coach for less money. A lot of “ifs.” Of course, we are assuming that they care. Are they sending us a message that they don’t?

Simple put, we gotta find a way to talk their language… engage them at where there head is… develop cyber pods in and around the stadium… hang outs where they can social network and feel invited. They are doers but not initiators. if the NCAA can be that flipant about changing the eligibility rules for post-season play (UCLA), then they should go back and review their decision on UH being ineligible for the men’s VB national championship based on their new rule, that was created nearly 8 months after the season ended and make it retroactive 5 years, saying that UH should have known that Costas was a member of a “professional team”, played, but never paid. How can UH comply with a “rule” that did not exist when they recruited and signed Costas!!

During the Von Appen era the same questions came up about who was holding up his contract extension. Like today many are blaming the BOR. Anyway I called the BOR at that time and was told the BOR was not holding up anything. This was because the BOR can only take action on items that are on it’s agenda. Items are placed on the agenda by the President. Like now there was never any item concerning the football coach on the agenda. The BOR executive secretary at the time was a personal friend and I personally knew one of the Regeants. Hiring and firing the coach is the responsibility of the University President and Chancellor with input from the AD. By the way the person holding up Von Appens contract at that time was then AD Hugh Yoshida. The BOR was not happy for having to take the flack for Yoshida. Remember the BOR is an advisory and approval body only. It is the administration which runs the university and it is their responsiblity for developing a road map of the future.

I think maybe we should go independent. We can have more home games and 100% PPV revenue to help with the finances. How much does Oceanic charge businesses, like bars and resturants, for PPV? I hope its a lot more than the home PPV.

I think the only way independence would work is if you had a tv deal like BYU and Notre Dame. The Hawaii TV market is just simply too small.

No one wants to come to Hawaii during the conference season. We’re already having problems scheduling teams in December, esp those from conferences with championship games. BYWho fans are already complaining of their “weak” schedule because they are independent.

Also, not sure why BYU fans are complaining of a soft schedule. They don’t get automatic access to a BCS bowl game like ND so why schedule murderers row? If anything it is independents who get the most out of “strategic scheduling”.
They play teams like Texas, Notre Dame, Oregon State, Boise State all in one season. That is plenty hard.
BYU is fortunate that the WAC schools filled the schedule.
Especially since BYU’s withdrawal of entering its non-football teams in the WAC led to the departure of Fresno State and Nevada (and eventually Hawaii), kept the Mountain West alive and essentially gave the WAC a death sentence. (Or so we thought, I suppose, since LaTech and Utah State did very well this year.)
Anyway, BYU would be in really big trouble if the WAC teams colluded and decided not to schedule BYU this year.

We add nothing to TV value (then again nor does Utah Lol). UH isn’t high up there academically. Our FB program has enjoyed moderate success at best.
Now Utah is an interesting candidate. Why Utah? No huge tv value, the school isn’t necessarily head over heals better than UH, their FB program is obviously very successful with 2 BCS Bowl wins over the past 8 years.
You can google the article but basically the PAC was told to add Colorado to force Texas into accepting a PAC invite. When that fell through, the “next best” school was Utah. Long story made short.
I attended the Board of Regents monthly meeting earlier today. Jim Donovan spoke after last fiscal year’s audit report was presented. Although the questions directed towards Jim were tough & touchy in some instances, he answered them straight up – especially those dealing with current conference realignment discussions as well as tv contract.
No mention was made as far as I can recall about the coaching staff although several Regents asked a number of questions about revenue sources and student support.
Another interesting factoid I learned today – the Manoa campus is no longer considereda commuter campus with students still living with their parents. Nearly 35% of all undergraduates live in UH housing and another 40% – including graduate students – live within three miles of campus in Manoa, Makiki, Kaimuki, McCully, Mo`ili`ili, Palolo, Waikiki & Kapahulu.
Finally, be prepared for public comment meetings on significant increases is campus parking fees.

Having tracked the Regents almost as long as I have the Stadium Authority, I can honestly say that using the Regents Candidate Advisory Council screening system passed in 2007 has significantly improved the quality and the qualifications of Regents. Abercrombie doesn’t like the system any more than Lingle did, but it is the law. The Governor has to selected people from a list – like judicial nominees – rather than by picking her/his political buddies.
I think Utah was a good pickup by the Pac-12.
The football team was knocking on a BCS berth a couple of years ago.
It’s a pro city.
What’s more, it’s an Olympic city.
There are a lot of very good hotels.
And because it’s a Delta hub, it’s very accessible.

Hawaii doesn’t have enough TV value to be considered for the PAC12. Utah was invited for being the next best choice and in the right time/place. It’s better to be lucky and good. 🙂
It’s not easy for a school that is not in a large media market to command high TV ratings/big following. Boise State and BYU are 2 that come to mind. Can’t blame UH for that anymore than you can blame them for existing in the middle of the ocean.
If we were in San Diego and had the same type of success etc, we would probably have a much easier time getting an invite.

Jim said that he cannot say what’s going to happen because it’s out of his control and things can change practically on a daily basis. He said that the situation across the entire NCAA is very tenuous, but that he will communicate directly with Keith Amemiya & Virgina Hinshawnon a regular basis as reliable information comes in. He specifically referred to the Big East Conference dealing with a number of options and alternatives – and that what was thought to be a settled deal a year ago is in a different state of flux today. My term, not his, but the same thing.
The Regents cannot get involved in these discussion without providing the public an oppoartunity to get involved. That’s the Sunshine Law.
The TV value isn’t in where you reside, because the assumption is your area will support you with attendance. Eugene, Pullman and Corvallis are not big markets.
The TV value is in who will watch you. If a team is a relatively consistent winner, entertaining and in a good time slot, there’s value.

@ Stephen Tsai, for those of us who live on the LEFT Coast we would like the games to start at 5 Hawaii time. We pay 225.00 a year for ESPN game plan to watch UH games. Five makes it 8 in the evening for us. But Hawaii would have a HUGE fan base if the East Coast could watch the games. They love Hawaii as a state and would rather watch UH rather then the PAC 12 schools. Most east coast folks dislike anything from the left coast. Just the way it is.
This summer I sent a girl from Iolani to several volleyball camps. SDSU, won an award there. Utah she also won an award there. Cornelle she got jammed up due to weather and was only there a day and a half. Did well there also. But you are so right about Utah…gorgeous dorms and facilities. And now they got Uncle Norm.
This coming year USC loses 20 scholarships the following year ten more. We will see what happens. Bet things won’t be so happy at the Coliseum. We could beat them next year if things go south there.

Rainbow DANCERS on the other hand are not, last I heard so any such ‘reality’ show could be done on them.

I was sitting in the student section for Wahine volleyball earlier in the year and when a UH marketing rep came looking for students to participate in the on-court contest after the second set, immediately two girls jumped up and they were wearing “HAWAII CHEER” shirts. Then as they were leaving, the guy they were with (a male cheerleader) reminded them they cannot because of NCAA compliance and falling under student-athlete guidelines.
I asked later and they do fall under that category.
I LIKE to judge those people. They are for my amusement at my choice.
Hell, I didn’t even know who or what a Snooki was until less than a year ago. I thought Twilight was based on a TV series and not a book and then I was corrected about True Blood and I thought it was a murder documentary on A&E.

And that is why none of the TV stations sent a reporter to the Regents’ meeting today, and that our paper sent a sports columnist.
Got to do some research on how the more successful schools are now marketing their football programs.. Our students have too much on their plates with school, tests, homework, part time jobs, full time jobs, some are already parents, and, as such, they aren’t going to show unless there is more to entice them. I’d have a big tent out for all active students to socialize and network right outside the main entrance. … Have TV screens so that they can sit outside and watch the game if they don’t want to go inside right away… let them come and go…
Someplace where they can check in their bags… so that they can bring things that might not be allowed through the turnstiles and get them back when they leave.

I think what would help UH is more competition.
At San Jose State, the media relations director has to call reporters to beg for even the most basic coverage. Not a problem here. UH doesn’t have to worry about letting people know who the top players are or when its teams will be playing.
And, so, when there’s a slump, it’s not prepared to market for new customers.
But you can bet if BYUH became Division I and fielded a football team, UH will have to learn aggressive and creative marketing.
#185 jmxxxx, I know we’ve been through this many, many times before, but here is my take on the “going independent” subject. Why? We would have to pay the MWC teams to travel, even the lower drawing teams too. By going indep., we save money. We lose or may have to share $2.5 million of our PPV money with the MWC teams, leaving us none or very little. The MWC’s TV contract gives us nothing or very little. By going indep., we could get our own TV contract (not sharing) which is why I asked earlier “how much is businesses paying Oceanic for PPV?” If it is the same as home PPV, then they should raise the price since a business would have more fans there than a home would (in most cases) and probably making a profit. UH would also have to petition the NCAA and do what it can to have our season start a week earlier than the rest of the country (big TV deal?). This would give us another week to schedule a team that is in a conference. We could schedule conference teams in the begining of the year (4, 5, or even 6 games), take our byes and play other independent teams and a DII or 2 games in the later part of October and all of November. Get a contract signed with the 3rd place team of a conference that played in a championship game, to be played on the last Saturday in December (another big tv payday?) in Hawaii. It would be the last regular season game in the nation against a marquee (sp?) team with a winning record (home attendance up?). The teams could be rotated among different conferences like, PAC 12 in 2013, Big 12 in 2014, etc.. We would offer them free charter flights from LAX since we would have to be paying the MWC teams anyway and maybe hotel rooms or at least block off x amount of rooms for them. All they have to do is get to LAX, which is why I think the PAC 12 or MWC or even WAC teams would go for that rather than an SEC team, but you never know with the big paydays that they are getting nowadays. Imagine a PAC 12 team with no chance for the championship game but still have a chance to go to Hawaii if they win their last game or 2. Probably excite their fans too. What fans that can afford it, wouldn’t want a reason to go to Hawaii in December. This would NOT be a bowl game but a regular season game. It would also take advantage of the Hawaii Rule where if you play in Hawaii, you are allowed a 13th game. I forgot to mention, that by UH getting to start their season 1 week before the rest of the nation, it would give the most traveled team in the nation year after year, an additional week of rest to focus on school and heal minor injuries. There are a few games that start before the rest of the nation like the Kick Off Bowl (I think that’s what you call it) so, why not Hawaii? Just my “outside the box” opinion.

If these 12 team conferences are going to 13 games like the PAC 12… they won’t want to give up their only bye week to play Hawaii during those months.

I agree that independence isn’t a very good option.
Once again, everything at UH — salaries, attendance, etc. — seems to be money-based.
But look at travel subsidies as an appearance fee, and it’s not that bad. $150,000 to $175,000 for an opponent? That’s a discount compared to the high six-figure guarantees most schools must pay out.
If they moved it to 7 p.m., I would boycott.
Besides, I don’t think many people will be around at 11 p.m. to hear the alma mater.

I always like to say the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team would be the best UH program to go independent.

ST is correct about TV market. If a product can be enjoyable, interesting, a good story line and a winner, people will tune in. “No can” I believe can. UH needs to sell ESPN on a unique program with UH football being the main course and during that main course there will be side dishes that will make people be entertained and have interaction to be tuned in. So many things could be done. Maybe INDEPENDENCE an alternative if you can get ESPN to be involved.

I’m sure UH and ESPN will be in talks if/when UH starts to win like Boise and commands that national following. I read many comments here and elsewhere that hint or state that Boise’s dominance and national following is fragile with Petersen holding all the cards.
I have to agree that without Boise winning, they don’t really bring anything to the table. The same can be said of UH. It’s winning program AND time slot or nothing at all. BYU on the other hand can position itself because of its history, name, and off course the church.
Lets work on getting or grooming a Coach Pete and winning like they do in Boise because we aren’t that close right now. Winning cures all.

Actually the best start time would be 4:30 PM = 9:30 PM on the east coast and 7:30 PM on the west coast, which would be the best TV coverage times for UH football.
The average temp in Honolulu for the months of Sept, Oct, Nov. are 88, 87, and 85 with the average trade winds of 5 to 7 mph which drops the actual temp 4 to 5 degrees. These average temps are taken at Noon at the airport.
