Pollard aces tryout, gets free-agent contract

After the second day of the three-day tryout, the New York Jets had seen enough.

They offered former UH wide receiver Royce Pollard a free-agent contract.

That means Pollard goes on the Jets’ 80-player active roster, with a chance to compete as a wideout, third receiver and kickoff returner.

Pollard’s signing means the four starting receivers and running back from the 2010 team are on NFL rosters: Pollard, Rodney Bradley (Ravens), Greg Salas (Rams), Kealoha Pilares (Panthers) and Alex Green (Packers).

A year later, the coaches were fired.

There have been no reported discussions or decisions on whether UH will pay travel subsidies to Utah State and San Jose State.

On July 1, UH’s football team joins the Mountain West Conference and most of its Olympic-sport teams join the Big West Conference. As part of an enrollment stipulation, the Warriors agreed to pay travel subsidies to visiting MWC and Big West opponents.

San Jose State and Utah State are seceding from the Western Athletic Conference and will be joining the MWC as all-sport members on July 1, 2013.

An interesting — albeit unrelated — case involves San Diego State, whose Olympic-sports teams will join the Big West in the summer of 2013. Because those Aztec teams reached an agreement with the Big West after the UH arrangement was finalized, they will not be receiving travel subsidies from UH.

So much spam! Have a great weekend everyone!

I hope that UH works it out in keeping pace with the fast moving conference alignments such that it does not pay an excessive amount for travel reimbursements to other teams thereby hurting the overall UH athletic program. I’m sure JDC already knows how much he can afford to pay while still keeping UH attractive enough to remain in the MW and BW conferences.

    How about a Hosting Clause?

Each member picks up the tab of the visiting team for food & lodging?

We feed them Spam & Rice, and let ’em stay at Hickam. Their excellent all-weather practice field is just outside the dorm. It’s close to the airport, so they can shoot straight to their return flight aftah da game.

J/K about da Hawaiian steak & rice. They can eat reg-a-lah haole food at the Military dining facility, or the Familia Mexican Restaurant next to the par 3 course.

The military recruiters would love being their host. The Service men & women would be thrilled to have their fave team as visitors. It’s a win-win, before they lose-lose!

It takes a couple of minutes to pull up all of the comments, but the zapping takes only a few seconds.

The amazing thing is that the spam posted is only a fraction of what gets through the filter. I used to get notices of every attempted post. There are hundreds of spam that doesn’t even make it. There also are quite a few posts from non-spammers that don’t make it because they were inadvertently labeled as spammers.

I remember the WAC coaches were always polite when it came to Boise’s blue jerseys on blue turf. Then a couple of years ago at the WAC media day, Boise’s last one, everyone started ripping away.

The biggest problem was the scouting. The cameras are really up high, and from that angle, you can’t see any of the players’ numbers.

  54. Stephen Tsai May 5, 2012 8:52 am

  61. Old Diver May 5, 2012 9:23 am

Travel subsidies for the MWC is essentially subsidies to the MWC athletic departments because they have no fan support. In other words we are paying subsidies because their own fans don’t show up at the gate. The $64,000 is how do we fix this.

  62. Old Diver May 5, 2012 9:32 am

Our football team will need to step it up. We need to be the big boys on the block, the guys everyone wants to beat, the team that has rivalries with every team in the conference, the team that will fill the stadium when they visit the other schools. A full stadium essentially pays for next years trip to Hawaii. Maybe JD can negotiate a plan where if Hawaii can generate certain size crowd at their stadium the travel subsidize will be reduced by a reasonable amount. Let’s sweeten the pot by having a bad a$$ trophy with each MWC team. Just throwing something out there for discussion.

  63. al May 5, 2012 9:35 am

  66. Stephen Tsai May 5, 2012 9:44 am

I always thought the problem with charters was availability, especially after Aloha shut down.

I’m curious as to how mainland schools can charter here while UH can’t get charters. Is it because there aren’t any available planes here? Maybe Alaska Airlines can help?

  67. βρεω808 May 5, 2012 9:49 am

…. waiting for SWA to get 737-800’s. 😀

AAA UH Travel Dept (LOL) should also contact Allegiant and ATA for charter flights. HA should accommodate “their” TEAM. 😐

  68. Stephen Tsai May 5, 2012 9:50 am

I wonder if UH can use those old Omni planes that were recently replaced?

Of course, half the team would complain of stiff necks, but it would be a charter.

  69. Stephen Tsai May 5, 2012 9:51 am

Ed Case is a gazillionaire. Maybe he can buy UH a private jet in exchange for an endorsement. Let the bidding begin …

  70. βρεω808 May 5, 2012 9:54 am

HA just expanded their service to LA and LV with additional flights during the week. Seems like they could (should) block those for Warriors during the fall – just sell the “return flights”. 🙄

  85. UHfan808 May 5, 2012 10:46 am

Perhaps to assist our state’s issues RE travel, mainland sports stations and various conferences, and etc:

Will take awhile but prepare and groom our children to understand our state’s issues and challenges to one day be able to become the decison-making owners, CEOs, and managers of companies who are in position to help our state’s teams along.

Grooming our kids to be doctors and lawyers is important, but also grooming (esp more sports-minded) kids, who may not necessarily be interested in being a doctor or lawyer, to specifically be successful in positions which can potentially elevate UH Football (since this is a FB blog) and related sports are important too, yes?

Anything toward the success of our Warrior Teams, eh?

And I leave with this previous post from chawan_cut back in 2008 which I enjoyed reading again and which applies to this year’s Warrior team, a thank you for previous years and in advance of the challenges our Warriors will learn how to overcome this Fall:

    Post #119 by chawan_cut:

    December 24th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

I wrote this on SH, but I also wanted to share this with you. It’s a thank you to this year’s team. Not sure how many of them read this.

Thank you for spilling your guts for us.

Thank you for waking up at the crack of dawn all those mornings to strap it on and string it up to practice play after play.

Thank you for your sacrifice to play for your teammates, for us, and the state of Hawaii.

No matter what people think with their opinions and judgements, you are the ones out there playing your butts off wearing the H on your helmet and jersey, against another team who is also practicing and playing with all their might.

Sometimes the ball bounces our way, sometimes it bounces theirs. Thats the game you play.

Thank you to your families for sharing your time with us.

Thank you to the coaches, staff and their families for giving all that they could day after day, night after night.

Not sure how many of you read this, but I just wanted to express my thanks.

    Merry Christmas

    and have a safe and

    Happy Holidays.

Got up at 4am this morning and went down to the beach to shoot the super moon as it set.

Photographing the moon isn’t easy even with expensive equipment. Out of 56 shots I got two keepers.

Tomorrow will be better because the moon sets 30 minutes after sunrise and that usually produces some great opportunities and better results.

Nice to see brew808 and uhfan808 posting again. Miss your contributions: brew – with his graphics, and uhfan808 – positive and exuberant. Of course, the wise and humorous everyday posters like ST, wafan, bhf2, kekoa, jm2375, koakane, homey, JJ, tommui, lizK, and slugger, to name a few, make my daily reading of the Warrior Beat enjoyable. As an aside, they make me reminiscent of the fun days with the Tsaikos!

Worst Spam attack ever, the past week.

SteveM, mebbe time for 1 life boat drill!

The Tsai-ko lifeboat (a smallish virtual 32,000 GT cruise ship) is owned and operated by Captain LizKauai. She’ll call the drill when needed… or staff Captain homey. I am mostly the lifeboat Cruise Director and bosun.

BTW, Mrs. A-House is the assistant Cruise Director. One of these nights I might recap the Tsai-ko staff positions from the last “lifeboat” launch…with 36 experienced Tsai-ko cruisers identified now, this could be interesting… 😉

ST #104 Ed Case is an attorney in a mid-size law firm – Bays Lung Rose & Hulma.

Bernie Bays is one terrific lawyer. Ms Rose is the attorney that was in the Bishop Estate Trustee case that removed Lokelani Lindsey as a trustee (The “Broken Trust” affair). I don’t believe I meet the other two named attorneys.

As Mr. Case is in that firm, he is in the company of some pretty hard-hitters.

WAC tourney Wednesday games are set in Las Cruces: San Jose St. vs. Nevada, 4:30 pm MT; Fresno State vs. Louisiana Tech, 7 pm MT

Hawaii needs to win one of 2 games tomorrow to win the regular season title and the #1 seed. A sweep would further their rpi and national poll ranking.

#1 seed will play the SJST/Nevada winner in a double elimination tournament.

Hawaii was the financial laughing stock of the old WAC. Now it is the laughing stock of the new MWC.

    Same guys.

Probably don’t have students flocking to UH business school.

Sooner or later, they’ll have to gouge us captive fans by raising prices. … Oh, wait, they already are. Same price for season tickets but one less home game.

  125. Ipu Man May 5, 2012 5:02 pm

    Shooting the Super Moon

I put together this photo (link at bottom)using an overlay process because moon shots against a black sky are boring.A setting or rising super moon when the sun is still up makes a great photo but it dosen’t happen often especially when the moon is very close to the earth.

The moon in this photo was taken about 15 minutes before it set early this morning. The life guard station is actually at Baldwin Beach on Maui and was taken when I went to the Wahine VB match. Anyone who lives on Maui can tell you that the moon dosen’t set in this location because you are looking north

Tomorrow the Super Moon sets around 6:20 am and the sun rise is around 5:50am so it should be a lot lighter out and the moon should look very large and bright just before it hits the horizon. The lower the moon is the larger it looks but it’s just an illusion.Hopefully there won’t be any clouds in the morning and I will be able to get a shot something like this.

  142. madeinhawaii May 5, 2012 8:08 pm

    Ipu Man,

The Winnipeg Bombers better have a QB that is tall enough to see in front of their new draftee. Otherwise the bulk of their pass plays will go towards the other side of the field and make them predicatable.

  143. madeinhawaii May 5, 2012 8:11 pm

6’8″ sounds a little too tall for the front line. Good reach but can he get low enough. Speed? Maybe they’ll use him for short yardage and hope he hides the ball carrier long enough for the carrier to gain a yard or two. After a certain height, I would think the numbers start working against you.

  144. wafan May 5, 2012 8:13 pm

    Get better soon, Slugger.

women basketball: Shahana Ziegler, incoming recruit wins accolades, the DTD recruit will join UH in the Fall. I’m assuming Beeman honors her NLI.

  154. Ralph May 6, 2012 12:11 am

Na Wahine basketball will have 2 6 footers on its roster next year, unless Beeman recruits more this summer, Karaitiana, a guard, and Adolpho, a combo center/forward.

Short and fast, well, I hope fast if we plan on competing in the Big West with a small lineup.
