Just because there’s no practice, it doesn’t mean there are no workouts. The Warriors ran sprints and lifted weights this morning. Here’s a picture of Waylon Lolotai, Alasi Toilolo, Victor Core and Elliott Purcell:

And here’s offensive lineman Matagisila Lefiti’s new tattoo:

For the first practice, the offensive line looked sharp yesterday. In part, it was new coach Gordy Shaw’s emphasis on fundamentals and techniques. Often, he would stop a drill to offer pointers. He also has that knack of being able to observe several blockers at once.
But the main reason for the improvement is the line’s overall good health. Last spring, center John Estes was hindered by a hamstring injury suffered while running the 40-yard dash. Tackles Aaron Kia and Laupepa Letuli and guard Raphael Ieru had a variety of injuries. Now they look fine.

* * *

Wideout Rodney Bradley said he still is adjusting to the offense. He’s grateful for being a mid-year transfer, which gives him an extra semester of work.

* * *

Wideout Royce Pollard, listed as the backup to Malcolm Lane on the right side, appears poised for a breakout season.

* * *

Agent Kenny Zuckerman alerts us to this Sporting News article, which mentions Ryan Mouton:

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=533369

Here’s an excerpt:

10. Ryan Mouton, Hawaii (5-9, 187)
Mouton is not a well known prospect by the media, but NFL personnel men have started to move him up draft boards this spring. He is an athletic cornerback with the foot quickness and explosiveness to close on passes in a flash, and he has the ball skills to break up passes. He also is a competitive player who flies upfield to deliver violent tackles. He should be a nickel cornerback as a rookie and a starter in time.

A very happy birthday to Colomaohana.

    Sounds like a good first step (literally, for the OL) at practice yesterday.

  13. Blackie March 31, 2009 4:57 am

    I hope the o-line has a better showing this year.

  14. Annoddah Dave March 31, 2009 5:59 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

    O Line woes are over? Let’s hope so. New season makes optimism “spring” eternal.

    Question for Coach Trapp: Whereas in Baseball, defense cannot score points, how much emphasis does he place on defense vice offense, i.e., 50-50, 51-49, 49-51, etc.?? Noticed that offensively, UH has been a lot stronger than in the past.

  15. Garret March 31, 2009 6:08 am

    I agree with ST’s point that the health of the OL will make a big difference in the upcoming season. I’ve been a huge Letuli fan, and it has been a big loss in my opinion when he’s been hurt each year. Having Estes suffer an during 40-yard-time testing last year really hurt, especially since he was supposed to be the leader of the OL.

    Hopefully everybody will stay healthy this year and Coach Shaw can mold them into the most effective unit they can be.

  16. Garret March 31, 2009 6:11 am

    I can’t believe that the NCAA bring in $500 million and only employs *three* full-time investigators! No wonder the big-budget schools can get away with so much–they can have more compliance people at one school than the NCAA has investigators for the entire country!

    In the city limits, Baltimore has more than 600,000 residents. To police this population the Baltimore Police Department employs more than 3,000 officers.

    The NCAA oversees nearly 400,000 student-athletes.

    By the last count I heard, the NCAA, which brings in more than a half-billion dollars in revenue each year, employed just three full-time investigators and about two dozen others who are used on a contract basis. This is a small part of the reason why the NCAA never unearths any wrongdoing. It waits for the news media (lately, Yahoo Sports), to force them into action.

  33. Nalani March 31, 2009 7:42 am

    Being a Mom of an OL, I love the fact that people are paying attention to them. They are usually the most underappreciated players on the team. =)

    BTW, I thought Kaha’i had a great practice. Hope it gets noticed.

    As a note, in the pix of Brett Leonard notice the hands hanging at his waist when he’s already taking his first step. Gotta watch that. Footwork is good but hands are important too and if you don’t get your hands on the DL first, they’re inside you before you know it. Coach was working only on First Step yesterday since they didn’t have full pads. I’m interested to see 1 on 1’s in full pads.

  34. Nalani March 31, 2009 7:45 am

    Oh and a note on UH Baseball, my nephew from Colorado wanted to play for UH. He was at a JC in New Mex and led the nation in HRs. UH wouldn’t even meet w him. He ended up with a full ride to Texas (Longhorns) where he started both years, was the lead off hitter, and won 2 national championships in 2003/2004 I believe.

    Hmmmm.

  35. Stretch March 31, 2009 7:55 am

  37. Kekoa March 31, 2009 8:13 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko’s!
    Soaked up an eyeful of football yesterday. Great to see everyone so upbeat and working hard at their craft. I’ve never seen practice so crisp and spirited before. With a full slate of skills and techniques to learn and execute, the season ahead will be the true test of their ability.

    Off the Field Observations:

    >ST playing cupid for a certain math blogger.
    >sjmacro without myki next to him.
    >Many more fans on the sidelines than I’ve ever seen before!
    >Local Paparazzi lurking.
    >BarryM Official Photographer/Videographer of the Samoan News.
    >Captivating Liz Chun trying desperately to “scoop” ST.
    >Koakane, Stretch, G-Nalo, Ralph & James eyeballing the O-line.
    >Rob25 asking great technical questions about the running back drills.
    >”5″ The number of iphone calls I received from a certain Tsaiko on site, worrying about where we were gonna go eat aftah practice!
    >Challenging coach Mack to a race to the practice field (he’s on foot) I’m in my car, but he still accepted! He said he quickly figured he had the advantage because there were 3 Tsaiko’s weighing down the car. Bwhahaha!

  38. Justin March 31, 2009 8:13 am

  52. al ™ March 31, 2009 9:16 am

    nalani,

    re: baseball recruiting. it seems that sometimes some coaches don’t like to be told of a recruit. almost as though they want to discover them themselves.

    case in point: local boy wanted to go to UH. kept trying to get murakami’s attention, just to have a look at him. for two years the kid, uncles, and family tried to get UH to pay just one look at one of his games. a local scout urged murakami to pick him up. they never bothered. the kid looks elsewhere and becomes a national star at nebraska and even got to the big dance. you may have guessed it by now, his name is shane komine.

    Coach Trap
    During last Friday’s game, Coastal Carolina pitcher Cody Wheeler was getting into a quick rhythm between pitches. I was thinking that the batters should have tried to slow him down. Get in the box, then call time out, then take some practice swings or tie the shoes. What are your thoughts of that??

  69. duffer March 31, 2009 9:52 am

    Happy Birthday Colomaohana & jeje.

  70. Kekoa March 31, 2009 9:56 am

    Welcome back Princess!…Esme was an adequate guest hostess.

    3 Questions for Coach Trap:

    1. What inspired you to become a baseball coach?

    2. Did you ever consider coaching football?

    3. Good Freshman pitchers. Is Senior, Alex Bates injured?

    Thank you for maintaining a great baseball program.

    GO WARRIORS!

  71. Colomaohana March 31, 2009 9:59 am

    Thanks for visiting da pink side, duffer! hehehe..

  72. Garret March 31, 2009 10:00 am

    Pretty cool to see that the Warriors had the 7th highest SAT scores of all college football teams studied.

    At a glance, here are the top 10 highest and lowest schools based on the average SAT scores of football players (out of a maximum 1600 score):

    School, Average

    * Georgia Tech
    , 1028
    * Oregon State, 997
    * Michigan, 997
    * Virginia, 993
    * Purdue, 974
    * Indiana, 973
    * Hawaii, 968
    * California, 967
    * Colorado, 966
    * Iowa, 964

  73. Garret March 31, 2009 10:01 am

    Here are the football teams with the lowest SAT scores:

    THE BOTTOM 10

    * School, Average
    * Oklahoma State, 878
    * Louisville, 878
    * Memphis, 890
    * Florida, 890
    * Texas Tech, 901
    * Arkansas, 910
    * Texas A&M, 911
    * Mississippi State, 911
    * Washington State, 916
    * Michigan State, 917

  74. A-House March 31, 2009 10:02 am

    Coach Trapasso:

    After watching the Saturday loss to UC Irvine, I told my wife that this year’s team will have to be reckoned with and the fans will return to support the Bows.

    My oberservation is that the 2009 Bows will be a showdow of the 1970-80 teams playing “small ball”, advancing the runners( hitting behind the runners, bunting, sac flies ), some home runs, and scoring plenty runs. Those teams also had a wealth of young pitchers.

    Was your recruiting by design that this would occur this year? Will you continue to recruit to maintain this style of play?

  75. Garret March 31, 2009 10:02 am

    Some highlights:

    * Football players average 220 points lower on the SAT than their classmates. Men’s basketball was 227 points lower.

    * University of Florida won the prize for biggest gap between football players and the student body, with players scoring 346 points lower than their peers.

    * Georgia Tech had the nation’s best average SAT score for football players, 1028 of a possible 1600, and best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0. But because its student body is apparently very smart, Tech’s football players still scored 315 SAT points lower than their classmates.

    * UCLA, which has won more NCAA championships in all sports than any other school, had the biggest gap between the average SAT scores of athletes in all sports and its overall student body, at 247 points.

    Questions for Coach Trap:

    1) Have you ever thought of having a lineup where you put Macdonald at second base and Alex Myers at first. Wasn’t Myers supposed to be a highly touted 4-hole hitter?

    2) Where is Alex Bates, he was highly touted prospect last year, but haven’t seen him pitch this year. He’s got to be better than Ryan Davis.

  105. Colomaohana March 31, 2009 11:09 am

    A-House: I haven’t had the pleasure of meetin’ you yet! I’m sure that’ll change soon! Thanks, eh! And ‘spice’ is ALWAYS good……I promise…..

    http://warriorbeat.honadvblogs.com/2008/09/13/game-day-3/

    Attention– Honolulu Advertiser.

    Blogs that are left open allow posters to post this kind of garbage.

    Look at #516 to #521

    Some 3-6 months after the OSU gameday post (9/13/09)

    and posts that are left unmonitored and unobserved are becoming the

    breeding grounds for some of the lowlife’s advertisements

    …this shouldn’t be allowed to happen.

    I’ve looked at other dates, and everywhere I’ve looked at has this pattern of

    infestation of garbage, usually of the unsavory kind.

    On another note the OSU game day posts showcases a lot of …let’s just say

    some excitable fans urging the Warriors on…in a 45-7 loss it’s seems like

    losing a football game is a bitter pill to swallow, but the way we did in all

    phases of the game collapsing is hard to take, and I agree. And the posts

    and posters had the types of intensity that day wishfully I wished at times it

    could be transferred to the players and coaches on the field.

  116. Mr Colomaohana March 31, 2009 11:49 am

    Good eye, roysan16!

    You know, on da’ pink side, Esme has discussion leaders, like myself, to help her monitor the site for crap like that. Does ST have people to assist him like that, too? I’m sure he can (and I think he should) remove that stuff……

    We’ve had a few, *ahem* mamaz who got a bit carried away with their language and stuff, so we normally send them a gentle reminder via private message to either edit their post or delete it completely, if not, Esme will totally remove it. All of those people were pretty cooperative, but thats just da’ mamaz side….

    I hope ST can help with this.

  136. Kazz March 31, 2009 12:24 pm

    I remember watching that OSU game feeling the lack of intensity on the field and the thought of a bad season looming in the back of my mind. However I also remembered hearing Brashton Satele’s mom a few tables away at Ige’s in Aiea going nuts through the whole thing regardless of the score.

    What was more disappointing than ANY loss is the way the team appeared to play with no emotion or will which is why I remember labeling that loss as a “pilau performance”. Some, or many, would rather take a blow-out loss than a close one… NOT for me. After the Cincy game, I was able to let it go within a few hours. The Notre Dame loss, still haunts me to this day as I do NOT believe that Notre Dame team is 20-something points better than us and I don’t care how many good recruits they had. I believed we had enough motivation and enough intangibles to get close or beat them.. Not to mention that while we had our struggles last year, we were NOT a “bad” team.

    With the good start to spring ball that many have reported, I hope this carries on as the “drop-off” of experience on the defensive side of the ball may be a telling tale when this season is done. Whether or not it will be a good tale or a sour one will ONLY be up to the coaches and the players.

    How many recruits, if any, did UH lose to the Pros this year? IIRC, none and this may be the sole reason for their current standing.

    In regards to the “shoe’d out” comments about some players being reprimanded for not wearing the “proper” footwear, was it the wrong brand (i.e. Nike’s instead of UA) or literally the wrong shoes (i.e. running shoes instead of football cleats)?

    http://hawaiiathletics.com/index.aspx

    More thumbs up to UH athletic site. From where they were a year ago… to where they’re are now is quite a transformation. And is deserving of recognition for this improvement. In the past– posters here, including myself, have lamented the UH site as not being that good. For I have poked fun at them, but not anymore.

    I can’t help but think that the people’s appeal for UH athletic site in getter better had an effect. But deep down inside I have a hunch, also, that with JD coming aboard he may have had his hands in this area of unveiling this new and improved UH site. And to the ones responsible, I extend a lot of appreciation for improving.

    Being attractive can be alluring. And have it’s benefits. And the web site by this new dress up is hoping on capitalizing into attracting fans, supporters, donors to the games, and interests in UH… and even recruits to the university’s sports programs.This is what I see by having a great web site can do for the school, and for UH, in this area, they see the picture of how the extra efforts in improving will, IMO, have rewards in the future, where fans taking and absorbing all that’s on the new site, from written stories to videos, soon are showing up more at the games. Ditto for donors, something that catches their eye or their heart can induce them into giving donations–and the web site can have this effect. And how… I hope it does. Likewise with recruits they can look at the site and become impressed about the attention the sport’s teams are receiving and know that they’re going to a school where there’s a web site that showcases their play. The UH site certainly does, for there’s daily updates and reports and video interviews plus an online media guide for each team. This is great. And my hope, more so, is that the web site makes people impetuous–from the fans, supporter, donors and to the recruits–in showing up and the games, giving support and donations to the school and to the recruits enrolling at the school.

    When I went the UH athletic site today I was overly impressed with the coverage of the site’s coverage of the first day’s Spring football practice. There’s a written write up along with video interview with Coach Mack. And it’s very informative. Although similar to what you might read in the paper and see on the new’s cast, I like the part in the written story where the writer introduced the new coaches to the Warriors in this year’s Spring opening practice… and introductions included graduate assistant Mike Smith, who seems to have been unnoticed in others reportings and write ups. I thought this was a nice touch.

    On where to find the Spring practice schedule and times here are the directions: Home>Sport>Football>Look to the right under links>2009 Spring Prospectus>First page. On the calendar are the days and dates of the practices.

    Navigating through the site I’m finding newer things all the time, like football score and results that I can scroll down quickly. Under schedule I can look up the scores and results dating back to 2001and the future schedules to 2013. What’s neat about this is that not only does site give the results and scores of the game quickly by whichever year I’m scrolling for and looking up, but also by pressing under TIME/RESULT it gives a written summary of the games of the past, which the site is becoming a really great source of information. Also from the homepage next to recent headlines I can view the archives from the past. All the written articles are saved, and even this aspect of preserving the scores and summaries of how the athletes do on the field must give the athletics, especially the alumni athletes, a sense of fulfilling pride and emotion that the school athletic web site set aside in the archives the written stories of the games they played in. Aside from being newsworthy, it’s a tribute to the athletes. For they’ll never be forgotten. And this is great direction the site is taking.

    Out from the shadows, and moving into the forefront has all the aforementioned benefits. And the UH athletic site has done this extremely well. But aside from having a well groomed web site, it’s this sense of pride that the web side exudes that hopefully it soon transcends down to unto the players and athletes onto the field. I think it will.

    With the UH Pro Day a few days a way what intrigues me is the invitation extended to other school’s athletes in allowing them to participate at UH’s Pro Day. How does this work? Can anyone just show up and participate? Or should UH’s Pro Day be exclusive to outsiders? Why I bring this up is that you’ll see, surprisingly, someone from OSU, a OL, a one time UH recruit, showing up at UH’s Pro Day. I don’t know the authenticity of the reports on the net I’ve read, but I do find in interesting if he did participate at UH’s…we’ll know more later, but I thought he had a bad acquaintance with UH and vice verse…interesting if true…two sources on the net says he’ll be at UH’s, so we’ll see…

  245. al ™ March 31, 2009 5:53 pm

    well, it is what it is.

    the wac has always been unkind to the university of hawaii. it is not just football mind you, we have experienced the shaft for so long whether it is football, baseball, basketball, softball, volleyball.

    it won’t go away until we go away. the sad thing is that slowly we are becoming one of the top two, three teams in the wac. we may be the most marketable of all the wac and yet we are treated as was cinderella.

    …nuff said.

  246. Committed Road Warrior March 31, 2009 5:54 pm

    I meant in terms of when we play certain WAC teams et al. The three straight road games is awful. Are the Warriors gonna return home between the UNLV and La. Tech games or are they gonna stay on the mainland somemore?

  247. Maverick March 31, 2009 5:54 pm

    Maybe the Warriors can re-write the script from the movie Big Wednesday?

    The epic swell will wash over the bulldogs.

    Let’s see the light
    Gotta love CFB. It’s so ambiguous.
    No homoginized expectations like the NFL.

  248. Committed Road Warrior March 31, 2009 6:11 pm

    Where’s the bye week?

    Looks like it’s on Sept 26 as JD requested, but instead of a home game the following week we get to “go back” on the road. Three weeks off island seems to be a bit much especially with the 11 days between the UNLV and La. Tech games, so unfortunately I can see UH biting the bullet and returning home after the second road game.

  249. SteveM March 31, 2009 6:14 pm

    Looking at the schedule, I don’t know how much we can fault the WAC since UH did schedule two consecutive non-conference road games before the WAC season.

    Looking at it again, we have 11 days betwen UNLV and LAtech and 10 days until the Fresno game at home. Not bad for the travel distance but it eats up the only two possible byes in the schedule. Boise and Nevada back-to-back is tough.

    So, anyone think the UH-San Jose State game is gonna be for the WAC title? 😐

  250. al ™ March 31, 2009 6:14 pm

    crw…..most likely they will return after the unlv game. that gives them ten days in between games. but, traveling to la tech is not a simple road.

  251. wafan March 31, 2009 6:14 pm

    Strange schedule.

    I wonder if LA Tech, or any other WACky team for that matter, has three straight road games where they will probably not return home at all.

    On the other hand, not having to continuously fly forth and back would save some cash.

    This is the WACked and BS must be protected.

  252. Kazz March 31, 2009 6:14 pm

    Did you guys hear that?

    Somewhere Coach Mack is throwing another piece of electronic equipment against a wall… 😈

  253. Kazz March 31, 2009 6:17 pm

    Not too worried about BSU at home still, but even MORE concerned about the road game against Nevada as if playing up there isn’t bad enough…

  254. Committed Road Warrior March 31, 2009 6:21 pm

    al:

    I figure the team will return home after the UNLV game, but it sucks that they would get home from Vegas presumably on Sunday only to have to turn around the following Sunday and head off to Ruston. You spend a day or two to reacclimate to Hawai’i time only to have to head off to Northern Louisiana and the five-hour time difference that entails.

    It’s almost like setting us up to lose that game.

  255. jm2375 March 31, 2009 6:26 pm

    Must be the tough schedule.

  263. warriorfanny March 31, 2009 7:09 pm

    Actually, Benson gave Donovan one of the options he requested, plus more.
    JD asked for a home game or bye after the UNLV road trip and Benson gave him an ESPN2 (?) game on the second Wednesday following the Vegas contest.
    That means our warriors will have six days of sleeping in their own bed and practicing at home before departing on Sunday for Ruston.

    After the trip they will have another 10 days to prep for Fresno when they come in to play @ NoAloha.

    eh, bottomline, we will be rested on both ends of the bulldog teams.

  264. Garret March 31, 2009 7:34 pm

    That isn’t an ideal schedule, but part of the problem is that the Warriors and the WAC seem to have given ESPN the right to get Wednesday games. If the Warriors are going to play a Wednesday game, they pretty much have to burn bye weeks, since playing the Saturday before or after a Wednesday game wouldn’t work.

    On the bright side, UH gets the road game at Nevada much earlier than I expected–10/31.

  265. Garret March 31, 2009 7:36 pm

    Looking at way the schedule is set up, it sure doesn’t look like the WAC expects much out of the Warriors. Instead of setting up a big ESPN showdown with BSU to crown the WAC champion, UH ends the WAC with Utah State, NMSU, and SJSU…SJSU could be good but the other two are not the type of games that ESPN would add if UH is fighting for the WAC title.

  266. Garret March 31, 2009 7:37 pm

    Three straight road games is unfortunate, but setting up the back-to-back nonconference road games really made the scheduling vulnerable to the conference schedulers.

  267. Garret March 31, 2009 7:40 pm

    Interesting article about how the NCAA might need to ban Twitter soon, as it really gets around the text message ban for coaches and recruits.

    So coaches used text messaging to get around NCAA limits on phone calls from coaches to players by instead getting players to call coaches; that, ingenious as it was, could not be around for long in the NCAA’s world.

    The ban has not since been reversed, and, though I’ve heard all manner of complaints from coaches in the SEC over the last two years, with Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin, I’m not aware of any mass texting problems.

    Enter Twitter, which can do all the things that text-messaging did, and covertly.

    Twitter’s got something called “direct messaging,” which is somewhere in a grey area between email and texting, where this becomes an interesting scenario. Direct messages are viewable only by the sender and recipient, and, if the recipient has an option checked, are sent directly to a phone as a text message.

    But a direct message isn’t a text message: It’s a message sent from Twitter. And there’s no prohibition on Twitter under current NCAA by-laws.

    Further, if text messaging would be difficult to enforce, at least phone records from coaches would be easy to subpeona if the occasion required them. If deleting direct messages is possible with third-party applications, and Twitter direct messages-to-texts show up as texts from Twitter’s five-digit 40404 number (which they do, at least in my phone), how would Twitter tampering be possible to prove?

  268. whitey March 31, 2009 7:46 pm

    schedule looks challenging, but do able. because of our time zone, it is always a problem with travleing east. in my travel experience, it is much easier to travel during the daylight and not use the red eye when going east. uh should schedule their flights to travel during the day and leave for home within 2 hours after the game. no stayovers after game. that way they can sleep on their way home sat night and get a full day of rest on sunday. but then, i don’t do the travel for the team.

    You have to look at it this way: There will be a 36-day break between home games.

    Roysan16:
    Sure, players from other schools may show up for Pro Day. But as we learned last year, it doesn’t mean they’ll be in the elite group. The non-UH players were placed in a group that was barely watched by the scouts.

    Not crazy about the schedule, but it’ll have to do.

    Happy birthday Colomaohana and JeJe!

    if you want to be the wac champs, then you play the schedule cause there ain’t no recourse once it is made. me, i don’t think the schedule is a problem, but is the team up to the challenge to be wac champs??? if they are, they will do whatever is necessary to win their games.

  276. Garret March 31, 2009 8:02 pm

    ST,

    That is the worst thing about this schedule for UH fans…that is the longest break between home games that I can remember! Plus, Central Arkansas isn’t the most attractive game and that is the only home game before the huge break before the next home game. At least the home game after the break is Fresno State!

  277. Stephen Tsai March 31, 2009 8:10 pm

    I just don’t like the Wednesday game.
    It forces a team to burn two bye weekends.
    For what?
    Really, UH and LaTech in September. Just don’t see much national interest.

  278. Garret March 31, 2009 8:15 pm

    d1shima,

    homey answered your question about the conflicker worm better than I could. One thing I would suggest is that you try to boot your computer in safe mode. I’ve read that if your computer is infected you won’t be able to boot your computer in safe mode, so that would be a good way to tell if you have a problem or not.

    Also, back up the data in your computer just in case!

  279. Garret March 31, 2009 8:17 pm

    ST,

    I’m guessing that ESPN bought that right when they increased the TV money in the latest contract. I agree with you that Wednesday games are bad for the teams…but they are great for ESPN and the visibility will be good for the WAC.

    I wish that UH had the Wednesday game in Hawaii, as then the disruption would be much less to the team.

  280. Jason March 31, 2009 8:33 pm

  282. Stretch March 31, 2009 8:42 pm

    Good Evening Tsaikos!!

    The start of the season with the 3 road games is NOT going to be easy on the team. What worries me the most is that we will have 9 games in a row with no byes. That is really going to suck. Injuries will definately be a concern this year.

  283. whitey March 31, 2009 8:45 pm

    i think that this is a good learning curve for JD. he is in charge of future games and this is his first scheduled season and like anything else he will become better at this. go gettum JD.

    But every time the wac talks respect and BCS money, well — voosh! — there goes all of that good exposure.

    Jason,

    I forgot about the swap meet using the stadium on Wednesdays. Does that mean that every Wednesday national TV game for UH will be a road game? That means that UH will basically lose all their bye week flexibility!

    BSU is adding reward stickers to their helmets, but just for now and not for the games.

    For the first time in head coach Chris Petersen’s tenure, the Broncos are wearing their rewards.

    Bronco position coaches are giving players white star stickers to put on their helmets, reinforcing positive progress in practice.

    The sticker addition won’t likely be around during the season, though Petersen said it may continue into fall camp. The idea was hatched not through other schools like Georgia or Ohio State that have pride stickers, but through the high school coaches that Petersen has spoken with.

    “The coaches would say ‘it’s amazing what the kids will do for a sticker,'” he said. “Well, the high school kids and college kids aren’t that much different.”

  292. Garret March 31, 2009 9:23 pm

    It was great to hear that coaches from Japan will be coming to UH this year to learn from the UH coaches. I didn’t realize that they already went to BSU last year.

    Japanese coaches from Hosei University will return again this week to watch spring practices. The group came last year for the first time, and lost in the Koshien Bowl, the university championship game, in December.

  293. al ™ March 31, 2009 9:23 pm

    ST…….you got mail.

  294. Garret March 31, 2009 9:24 pm

    Another article give more information.

    The coaches from Hosei University in Japan who visited Boise State last spring are back this week. Hosei, one of Japan’s top programs, lost in the college championship game last season.

    “I think they’re bringing more people (this year),” Petersen said. “They felt like they got some pretty good stuff out of it.”

    Last year, the Broncos spent quite a bit of time helping the Japanese coaches. This year, the coaches will work mostly on their own.

    “They come in and watch our tape and study it for a long time,” Petersen said. “They know football.”

    I did a full story on Hosei last year. Here’s a link.

  295. Garret March 31, 2009 9:25 pm

    The UH coaches might need to prepare for a slash-type freshman QB from BSU.

    Petersen and offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin already are discussing how to utilize freshman walk-on quarterback Drew Hawkins, who was very productive in the first scrimmage.

    Petersen mentioned using Hawkins in the Tanyon Bissell role — running the spread option — or as a Slash-type player.

    “Drew-Bob Hawkins is a wild card,” Petersen said, using the nickname coaches had for Drew when he was running around the Broncos’ offices as a kid. “If he keeps hanging in there and battling and improving like he has, he is going to do something for the Broncos.”

    Jason,

    I think that I mentioned that Faith’s school gives her a special math teacher that meets with her 1-on-1 when the other 8 kids in her Kindergarten class have their math classes 3x per week. I just got to see some of the problems that the teacher gives her…and I know she loves this stuff! I think you’d find the problems Faith gets interesting, and here is an example (Faith got the answer correct):

    There are 3 boats: a red boat, a blue boat, and a yellow boat. There are 4 people fishing in each boat. Each person caught the same number of fish as the other people in their boat. The people in the red boat caught twice as many fish as those in the blue boat. The people in the yellow boat caught 3 times as many fish as the people in the blue boat. If a person in the yellow boat caught 6 fish, how many fish were caught by all the people together?

    re-UH conference schedule

    Part of the reason is described below in Ferd’s article, and having one less week to play would allow for lesser flexibility in scheduling this year, I would think. For the WAC conference and television networks and executives also working together in what’s beneficial to the network’s (ESPN) scheduling more so than caring of how the scheduling is a hardship on the teams , so that’s another obstacle. JMO.

    Not since 1964 has UH played 3 consecutive road games, so right there is the most daunting part of this year’s schedule, where the hope is that the team doesn’t burn out from all the traveling. How the team fares in those three away games sets the pace, I believe, in how they do the remainder of the season. Win the first four games of the season and the Fresno game should be near a sellout. It’s doable, and a win is possible. Win the Idaho away game, where a win over there is doable, then enter the Boise State game at 5-0 and the stadium should be packed, including all the venues that televise the game live around the state. Looking at the first game that’s on a Friday works in UH’s favor, where they now have an extra day to prepare for the away game at WSU. The LaTech game on a Wednesday gives them two days extra to prepare for the Fresno game than if it were scheduled on a Saturday, so I don’t think it’s ( the scheduling) as bad as it looks. Add to the fact that the LaTech game comes 11 days from the away game at UNLV, so it’s not that bad of a hardship. I don’t know what Coach Mack thinks of the scheduling, but if were in his shoes and seeing whats ahead, I wouldn’t think it’s all that bad. It’s a hard schedule, and the teams in the WAC are tough, especially the away games at LaTech, Nevada and San Jose but that’s the nature of how competing from such a long distance away from the other teams that Hawaii is forced to deal with, and with all the traveling wearing on them. But that’s the price of poker. And yearly and dearly UH antes more than any other D-1 school with all the traveling and having no breaks in the scheduling. Yet there’s nothing they can do about it. Any reprieve from scheduling would have been a plus, with an extra week off between the 9 consecutive games, but I agree with the poster that wrote “it is what it is” and the reasoning is made below in Ferd’s article.

    From Ferd’s article 3/19/09

    Part of the problem is that since UH is scheduled to play 13 games and the NCAA-approved football season spans only 14 weeks this year, compared with 15 in 2008, an open date on Sept. 26 forces UH to play 10 consecutive weeks. “At some point,” Donovan said, “you’re looking at consecutive (WAC) road games.”

  309. al ™ March 31, 2009 9:44 pm

    stretch…..you should run it by the compliance officer first. no sense waste all that effort only to get reprimanded by the nfa patrol.

    and don’t forget not to yell/cheer too loud this year.

  310. warriorfanny March 31, 2009 9:45 pm

    Watched the interview with Mike Trapasso and what a difference a year makes.
    I find it ironic that Coach Trap’s biggest complaint about the newly condensed NCAA schedule may play into his strength–pitching.

    Yeah, Ok, it is true, playing Nevada, NMSU and Fresno State on the road is prolly the worst case scenario this year, given the altitude venues; but Coach has recruited a bumper crop of young arms over the last two recruiting seasons and they just might pan out in an abbreviated regular season featuring 56 games.

    Im talking about Josh Slaats, 6 5″, So., Sam Spangler 6 1″ So., Alex Capaul 6 3″ So., Conner Little 6 6″ Fr., Matt Sisto 6 5″ Fr., and Lenny Linsky 6 3″ Fr.

    This is Mike Trapasso’s game–pitching.
    He is good at it and from what we have witnessed thus far from a team hitting below .250–it plays to his game–strikes, D, clutch hitting and small ball.

    What else can he do with 5 hitters, including your clean-up guy, batting at .231 or below?
    The bows have two in the starting lineup struggling at the .200 line. Yikes!

    Well, San Jose State will test this theory.

    They are whacking the ball, against good competition at a .335 clip. Higher than Costal Carolina brought into the Les (.315).
    Vinnie Catricala is the only Rainbow hitting above .300.

    The 16-5 Sparts have played 11 games against Big West and West Coast Conference teams.
    These two conferences have had 7 teams ranked in the top 25 this season.
    The BWC, agruably maybe the best conference in the nation.

    It would be sensational to see our Bows take three but a split wouldnt derail our chances.

    “This may be a six team race”, Coach Mike quiped, “every game will count”.

    “San Jose State is a very good team fundamentally and they they dont beat themselves”, he said “we will have to beat them”.

    Yep, indeed.
    The Les is a pitchers park and the bows need to win their WAC-hometown series against SJSU, Sac State and LaT.

    He doesnt discount hitting either, especially on the road above the timberline.
    “We play Nevada and NMSU at high altitudes” he said, “and although I would like to see good pitching, realistically, balls will be flying out”.

    Well, we shall see about that and for now, at least, we need to focus on the SJSU series, where young and eager arms will be matched against hot bats in a stadium built for pitchers.

    If the 2009 Bows are going to make a statement–it will come by the end of this weekend.

  311. warriorfanny March 31, 2009 9:49 pm

    After a year of listening to MAC rant Im sorry if I remain unfazed with his latest no-shoe-no-practice tirade.

    You got to be more impressed with the new commando-coiffure some of his OL is sporting than the berating Coach Mac delivered to his wrong-shoe players.

    Wait, how about one OLM commenting that they were really gased from running.
    Sorry, no change there either.

    MAC always screams to get attention, just like a good guy does when he feels someone is taking advantage.
    But, really, it wasnt effective last year and prolly less this year becz his players have figured him out–loud bark with no teeth.
    It didnt stop unconscious penalties or temper tantrums…so, what difference does a year make?

    Bottomline, it will come in the offensive trenches when camp opens.
    Be there and watch the first set of sprints.
    All the puff and sugar coating will exit out the door in that brief drill.

    Im betting Gordie has a whip and our boyz know it.

    Not saying MAC aint taken seriousily–Im just saying what everyone else has been saying on this blog–MAC is a good guy….for what its worth 🙂

  315. BowsForever March 31, 2009 10:06 pm

    Who plays three road games in a row in college football? Almost doesn’t seem real. Certainly doesn’t seem _right_.

    On the other hand, at least there’s a bye week. Er, half-week. That must be the WAC’s flimsy excuse for this gauntlet. Two consecutive half-bye weeks in the early part of the season and that’s it. Wow. We’re gonna need team depth and a little luck.

  316. roysan16 March 31, 2009 10:26 pm

    What Coach Mack is doing is instilling discipline this year in the team. During practice I’ve read where two players were sent to the sideline for not conforming to having the right shoes on. Another was sent to the sidelines for striking the OL in the face with his hands during defensive line drills that would have drawn a personal penalty in a game. He has quoted as saying he’s not going to put up with this type of behavior. Even as I looked at all the pictures of the players in the unsupervised work outs, including the ones posted on top the blog, I’ve notice every picture showing all the players in the same attire, same shoes, socks, shorts and shirts. And having this done is such a deterrent of players having individuality and keeping them further disciplined…and I think this is great and I agree. By having unity on the team is what it’s all about, and it starts with discipline, imo. And the coach paying attention to the small things may sound penny ante, like what shoes they have on.But the hope is, and I can see it, is that he wants the players conforming to the rules…and breaking such he’s pulling the trigger and the players are sent to the sidelines. This is good thing, and it’ll work wonders when the season starts if the coach hovers over them watchfully for any indiscretions on and off the field.

  317. warriorfanny March 31, 2009 10:51 pm

    C’mon folkz quit bickering about the schedule.
    It’s done. The slab has been laid and it’s time to start framing from its foundation.

    In the WAC, talk is cheap, and excuses flow like a Windward flashflood after a January storm.

    What do you expect from a conference that has no personality and two sets of teams with the same monicor?

    Karl Benson and his helter-skelter-wait-4-Bristol’s-schedule is just a ruse, a pas de deux, for all our apprehensions (and diminishing aspirations) about next seasons success.

    Didnt we start off last year complaining about the competition?

    We didnt stop until we upset Fresno State at their house.

    I’ll say again.
    Y the grousing?
    We have the time in this schedule to euhanize both dawgs.
    Bring it on.
    It’s not like playing Florida and Oregon State with a revolving door of quaterbacks.

    We are talking about LaT and Fresno State.
    Competitive, yes, but we wont be outmatched in talent.
    I bet we start the same QB for both games.

    We have 20 days between both games and one is at NoAloha against a team that has lost three-in-a-row to Hawaii and the other one that will not false-crack us at the start unless we do the haka.
    Im betting Mufi sings the national anthem before we haka-ize Louisiana.

    Focus on our OL, they need the pressure, no get-out-of-jail-free-passes.
    That is our foundation for improvement and well known achilles heel.

    Getting tough starts with the fanbase.
    Move on!

    warriorfanny,

    Agreed. As I said earlier the schedule is what it is.

    Eh, it’s not like they open at home then take a 14-hour bus ride the next week; then a 5 hour bus ride the next; then a 10 hour bus ride the next; then a 7 hour bus ride the next (keep in mind, gang when you ride the bus going, you gotta ride the bus coming back, too); play at home the next; get back on the bus for a short 1 hour jaunt; then play at home; then, Thank Heaven! a bye! What college team could possibly have a schedule like that?
    Long plane rides? Nah, none to worry about on that schedule…..

    Anyone watch our Mayor give his sound bite on the beach at Waikiki about his focus on cleaning the toilets at Kapiolani Park?

    Great PR, uh.

    OK, what about cleaning up the sewer treatment plants, the improvements the EPA ordered that is dumping condoms and other fecal matter on our prized beach?

    Parallel analogy in the sound bite?

    There is more to discipline in football than wearing correct shoes and screaming for the camera.

    It’s called commitment, practice perfect, practice perfect and more practice perfect.
    You also need a coach that knows what perfect is all about.

    never mind my arithmetic on the above post about Boise’s days off between games, I know it’s wrong-but the idea there….zzzz

    ST ~ Great interview with coach Trap today!

    He gave us a very detailed look at the team from top to bottom. He was very clear and succinct in answering my questions. He seems to be such a knowledgable person who also displays a great sense of humour.

    I like his philosophy about the game from his perspective as a former pitcher. It makes sense that tuff pitching and hard nosed defense will stagnate your opponent, while you scratch out some runs on offense.

    It was disappointing to hear that Alex Bates will be out all season due to the surgery on his arm. I’m glad that coach Trap is confident that he will be returning to play next season.

    I’m glad spring football is starting…..go warriors practice makes perfect….like warriorfanny said….desire.

    …and one more thing about coach Trap. He paid his respects to the Tsaiko ohana and the blog Meister after the interview.

    So all teams playing UH in Hawaii are allowed one extra game on their schedule, per the Hawaii exemption

    Teams from the WAC playing UH in Hawaii and the number of games on their schedule, some elected to play the extra game, some didn’t

    Boise-13
    Fresno State-12
    New Mexico State-13
    Utah State-12
    Navy-13
    Wisconsin-12

    With this quote from Ferd’s article from JD

    “NCAA-approved football season spans only 14 weeks this year, compared with 15 in 2008”

    ….now if every season from now on spans only 14 weeks how hard do you think it will be for UH scheduling out of conference game? I think very hard, for who would want to come here and play, travel all the way out here and try to squeeze in all their games in a 14 week season…at least in the past with a 15 week season teams would give it some thought about coming over here, but in a shortened 14 week season it becomes less attractive and burdensome…what UH should do is knock on the NCAA door and ask for allowances that allows UH and it’s team visiting an exemption from the schedule allowing them one extra (or even two) on their schedules…what I like to see is UH allowed the exemption to start their games around August 24 so it makes it more attractive for teams coming over here

  327. warriorfanny April 1, 2009 12:00 am

    niho mano, ahh brah, u got da feel….just one minor edit–practice perfect is different than practice makes perfect.
    That’s the problem.
    Tiger Woods starts his training at 6AM and doesnt finish until 6PM.
    He focuses on doing it right with every repetition.
    Over and over ad nausem.
    He watches film to make sure he is perfect.

    Vince Lombardi did the same with his Packers.
    Especially the play where Paul Hornung went wide and cut back to a seam formed by a convoy of blockers which opened an alley to daylight.
    He was one of the first I recall talking about practicing perfect.
    He knew what he wanted from the play and was relentless in practice until his troops executed it flawlessly.

    Coach June was the same with his routes.

    If you noticed last year–our RBs often muffed the shuffle pass and our OL messed up on blocks and focus.
    Usually an indication of not practicing perfect.

    These imperfections cost us dearly.
    Practice perfect!

  330. Committed Road Warrior April 1, 2009 12:50 am

    One last rant before I go to sleep:

    The schedule is what it is.

    However I still don’t like it. I was really anticipating an additional two-game road trip during WAC play to add to the out-of-conference matchups in Seattle and Vegas, but we get three consecutive road games with two half-a***d byes (technically one but the half weeks before/after La. Tech give the illusion of two). Of course, OTOH, we did open ourselves up to this when we scheduled Wazzu and UNLV on back-to-back weekends when you consider the shortened timeframe for the college football season.

    The additional time will help in prepping for Fresno but flying from Hawai’i to La. Tech is gonna be just like any other road trip to Ruston when it comes to acclimation and such. Sure UH will get a couple extra days at home to prep for the Bulldogs, but they still have to get there, which of course includes the requisite time differences and acclimation to CDT.

    Assuming the team returns home after the UNLV game, the best bet would be for the Athletics Dept. to try and get them out on that wicked 2:30am Hawaiian Air flight out of Vegas so they won’t have to spend the night and lose another day to travel (plus additional costs for hotel).

    If the Warriors return to the mainland the Sunday or Monday before the La. Tech game, I wonder if they’ll be staying in Dallas. You know who’s there, right?

  331. roysan16 April 1, 2009 1:11 am

    ….oh, oh I can’t sleep…one more..one more.. ya, ya…har, har …anyway why do I get the sneaking hunch behind the guise of ombudsmen is someone well known here that has wherewithal to pick up on these kind of things, especially football related things …you know whom I’m thinking it might be…you know the one whom enriches us with his OL knowledge…maybe, maybe not-just a intuitive hunch., then again it could be al for he’s pretty sharp, too..anyway “hi” and “ty” ombudsmen on your astute observation and even to you Warrior Fanny for your opinions and analysis….

    Gmornin/April Fools!

  340. Garret April 1, 2009 5:39 am

    roysan16 made a very good point about having 14 weeks to play 13 games…if UH wanted the nationally televised Wednesday game, then the schedule had no room for a regular bye week. In that case, at least playing on a Wednesday gives half-week byes before the La Tech game (long travel process there!) and Fresno State (big WAC home opener!).

    With 14 weeks to play 13 games, there really wasn’t a schedule that could be set up where fans would *not* complain. I’m sure that BSU fans aren’t happy with having a short week to prepare for their WAC opener against Fresno State. And I can see a lot of other things that fans of other WAC teams can complain about.

    Bottom line is that having one less week this season really hurts when UH gets to play an extra game…but there is no way that UH would not play the extra game. Hopefully the calendar will allow 14 weeks in future seasons.

    Re-Do I think the WAC and ESPN slighted UH in giving UH lesser top billing and television exposure than other WAC teams? No, I don’t. And these are the reasons.

    For UH these are the facts, no players on the All-Wac Freshmen team, and 1 returning All-Wac First Team player (Estes).

    When ESPN scours the rosters and looks and disects all of the WAC team’s rosters and the returning star players in the league for the 2009 season, do you think they see many from UH? No. Do they see Nevada with seven (+2 from the All-WAC freshmen team) , Boise with six (+5 from the All-WAC freshmen team) and Louisiana with 5 (+4 All-WAC Freshmen) as the predominate teams in the WAC with the most proven players? Yes, definitely.Compared to the aforementioned teams, what do they see as proven players or stars on UH roster…very little. Right?

    So subsequently, the teams that have the most star returning players should receive the most television exposure. Right? If your a television executive and looked at Nevada’s returning star players (7+2) and 66 returning lettermen for the 2009 season wouldn’t you give Nevada top billing over UH, which has only 1 star player returning…I would think so. So, no I don’t think UH is being slighted by appearing in lesser ESPN games than Boise, Nevada and Louisiana Tech. The facts speak for themselves. If someone said if it would be surprising if UH finished 4th or 5th would that make them sound cynical? Maybe. But if you looked at the players returning they’re are more of the star players on the other team’s rosters than of UH. If your factor the players from the All-Wac freshmen team, players that have one year of development and look at UH freshmen players that have very little game experience experience there’s a huge gap there, too. So the bottom line is that UH has they’re work cut out for them–imo, next year’s going to be tough journey.
