Tommy Lee to retire

tommy

Tommy Lee is expected to announce his retirement today as the Warriors’ offensive coordinator and receivers coach.

Lee is  a good coach and a good guy.

He was coaxed out of retirement last year to be on Norm Chow’s first UH coaching staff.

Lee’s retirement is part of a wish to spend more time with family on the mainland. He has a son living in Utah and a daughter in the Bay Area. Lee and his wife still own a house in Dillon, Mont.

We wish him the best.

Hope everyone’s Christmas was merry and bright. Another recruitment action for the team…hopefully, it will result in a “good guy/gal”. You never know these days when a woman might be on a men coaching staff.

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

  27. midnight December 26, 2012 7:14 am

Belated Seasons Greetings for the Holiday Season, and Best Wishes for the Coming New Year!

We had a few hours of rain early Christmas Day, and about 1-2 inches of snow from 1pm-5pm later on. There was slipping and sliding from then on – Texas has a lot of elevated cloverleafs and bridges – many of them could not be traversed because of the slope and ice. However the Texas Highway people were out in force with their trucks loaded with salt and sand so that helped travel by car.

Today, Wednesday, the temperature is about 29, the last time I looked but the sun is nice and bright. Lovely day, but cannot beat Hawaii and the beach.

    Hawaii no ka oi!

    Love to all,

    Barbara and Midnight

You guys think Rolo would come back? He seems quite happy where he’s at.

Besides he already put an “X” of Rolo Candies on the H.

  29. WarriorNY December 26, 2012 7:18 am

    #25,

I remember ST saying something a few weeks ago about the possibility of Coach Jones leaving. And that he was “held in high regards” within the coaching fraternity… I didn’t hear anything after that…

  30. kapakahi December 26, 2012 7:22 am

    Mahalo to Tommy!

Now that Tommy’s re-retirement is official, I’m hoping that Coach can find a way to officially place former Warrior great (and 8-year NFL vet) Ashley Lelie on the staff as the WR coach…..to expand on what’s he’s already doing with the Warrior receivers…..currently as an intern.

Ashley would be great asset for recruiting…..both locally and on mainland…..as a former local HS product and walk-on….who earned a full scholie as a starter….and became the go-to star receiver…..who then got picked in the 1st Round of the NFL Draft (19th overall selection)….and played 8 full seasons in the NFL…..with the experience and knowledge of multiple offensive sets…..having played in Norm’s Pro Set offense…..as well as JJ’s R&S offense. Ashley was already in the booth on game days assisting Tommy last season.

  32. kapakahi December 26, 2012 7:36 am

Hopefully Coach can find a way to get some of these Kahuku athletes (CB/P Jayven Mohetau, RB/S Devailo Motuga-Galeai, LB Matai Paselio, WR/CB/S Lasselle Thompson) to somehow join the UH program……possibly as greyshirts or invited walk-ons.

  40. Old School Dave December 26, 2012 8:35 am

Happy Holidays to all. Hope you are working off or recovering all of the goodies consumed yesterday :-).

Unconfirmed reports coming out that new Colorado head coach Mike MacIntyre will not be retaining any of the 12 assistant coaches from Jon Embree’s staff. That group also includes linebackers coach Brian Cabral, who has served for some 20 something years at CU under 5 different HCs. Given the nature of college coaching, all good things eventually come to an end.

  41. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2012 8:40 am

Based on interest last year, Daronte’ Jones would be the likeliest coach to be approached. Don’t know if he’s had any offers. But he did a good job last year, and he’s been pretty effective as a recruiter this year.

  42. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2012 8:41 am

Chow, in essence, is the OC.

  44. A-House December 26, 2012 8:50 am

    Decisions, decisions:

what position(s) to advertise? OC? Receivers coach?

It would be extrodinary, but what if Chow goes back upstairs and call all the Offensive plays and has multiple lines to all the coaches so he can tell them what he sees; especially the defense. The US military, especially the Army and Marines, wherein the “Commander” is in a strategic spot to see the “battle field” and relays instructions to his “line commanders” and what to do. Yea, yea, I know it sounds like my suggestion where the OL “attacks” the DL rather than back pedalling on pass plays – but, what the hay, why not????

What is it about HC and/or OC at all levels that like to call consecutive running plays up the middle when inside the 5 yard line for a TD? must it be smash-mouth ball? America is known for “bigger is better” syndrome.

Until, international car companies began the initial push for “smaller vehicles” – then USA jumped on the wagon.

  46. Former UH Athlete December 26, 2012 8:59 am

    ST… You’re 100% correct.

Much like Rolovich at Reno. He’s OC in title but Chris Ault runs the offense. Doubtful Ault would let Rolo tweak his pistol offense after seeing Rolo tweak the run n shoot into mediocrity.

On a side note, did anybody notice June Jones completely out coach and out-plan Deruyter during the Hawaii Bowl?? SMU got two late defensive TDs to blow the game open but JJ mixed up his play calling to score on Fresno.

Who knew a June Jones offense could produce a 4,000+yd running back (w/ 3 straight 1,200+yd seasons)??? Zach Line also tied Eric Dickerson’s career rush TD total. Wow. Great coaches always adjust their scheme for their personnel.

Again, SMU (like Auburn v Oregon; Georgia v UH) proves that the key to shutting down the spread offense is the d-line.

Nick Fairly of Auburn broke down Oregon in the BCS game in 2010… Georgia’s DEs dominated Brennan &co in Sugar Bowl… Margus Hunt single handily broke down Fresno… Stanford shut down Oregon this year with their D-line.

tommui and everyone I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. Planes late in and out of LA. Lucky we landed in Hawaii for Christmas. But it was a great day on the Big Island. Heading over next week to go see the dorm redecorating ( I can only imagine ) visit the Coach, of course we need new clothes for school. And of course the big celebration for getting 4.0 GPA this semester. Life is pretty good. And our other boy proposed on Christmas Eve…so now we have a wedding to look forward to. Life is good.

Sorry to see Coach Lee go. But family is so important. Hard when kids are across the country.

    GO WARRIORS!

Daronte Jones is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. A predominately African-American Fraternity that has many famous athletes players amongst their membership rolls, including the likes of Ray Lewis, Steve McNair (dec), as well as Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal .

If he leaves, hire another member of Omega Psi Phi, and you will continue to get your Florida and Texas recruits. The football world is very familiar with Omega Psi Phi. Pros and college.

The Omega connections within the coaching fraternity are even tighter than you could imagine.

Normally I appreciate and enjoy your postings, however, this morning, well you showed something.

For this instance, you are clueless, almost to the point of ignorant regarding Nick Rolovich.

    Running the R-N-S to mediocrity?

    Wow, what a joke.

Check the numbers my friend, do a little homework, and that’s despite a head coach that was more in the way than part of the solution.

C’mon brother, you’re much better than that. I know it, I’ve seen it, I’ve read it before.

Agree with # 46. JJ is an unbelievable coach, a real genius. He out coached DeRuyter. We need him back at Hawaii.

#51 re the fraternity. You are right. My son’s friend is in the fraternity and he had to go through really rigorous initiation for one year to see if he was serious. He is not an athlete, but he stuck it out, proved himself and became a member. Most people drop out. Once you are in, you are a brother for life and the members help each other get jobs, pull strings, etc. When you are in a city, you call up the brother who is in that city and he will help you. It is a real brotherhood, unlike any fraternity that I know of.

Former Castle Knight Louis Wong, who played for on the oline for Norm at BYU, played in the NFL and head coached Timpview High to multiple State Championships would be a great Oline coach if that position ever opened up.

Fun fact.. in his BYU bio it states he was the only guy to leave the islands to play football. (In 1981). Assumes this meant only guy to take a mainland D1 scholie. My how times have changed.

    @55 wowlaulau

think is right, maybe think outside the box! ault may have hired him but what was the difference from Nevada’s offense last year and Nevada’s offense this year…….you sooooo smart, Nevada rushed for more yards this year than last year and passed for more yards in 2011 while rushing for less……sure hiring a Run and Shoot coordinator that actually had a say in the play calling would produce those results……..YOU THINK!!! SHEEESH!

Schatz is the one. He will be the senior senator from Hawaii. Come 2014 elections, will he remain as the senior senator? I don’t think so. And now we lose 2 years seniority for one senator. Aiyah.

    Back to sports…

  97. wowlaulau December 26, 2012 2:18 pm

This is really fascinating, You’re an excessively professional blogger. I’ve joined your feed and sit up for in quest of extra of your wonderful post. Also, I’ve shared your website in my social networks

  99. tommui December 26, 2012 2:22 pm

    @96 Jimmy the lock:

Well, Mr. Schatz id get 37% of the votes in the previous primary against a fairly respectable field – Sen. Norman Sakamoto, Sen. Bobby Bunda, Sen. Gary Hooser, Rep. Jon Riki Karamatsu, and Rep. Lyla Berg.

And 57% of the voters did vote for him in the general election – true, he was on the ticket with Gov. A.

The only way he could lose in the 2014 race is if he goofs or one of our representatives forgoes her seniority in the House. If Representative Hanabusa runs, for example, she forgoes 6 years seniority as a House member. Of course there is always someone like Mufi etc that might take him on but it is difficult to knock out an incumbent.

  100. Willie December 26, 2012 2:33 pm

Congrats Max Unger! HPA grad named starting NFC Pro Bowl center for 2013!

Is this the Big Island player that June Jones tried to recruit to Hawaii & move from OL to DL? If my memory is correct JJ made a comment after a recruit commited to Oregon as an offensive lineman. He said this recruit was throwing his future away if he stayed on the offensive side and that future success was on the D-Line. Anyone out there remember this? If not Max, who was it?

  101. Thank you, I have just been looking for information approximately this topic for ages and yours is the best I’ve found out till now. But, what about the bottom line? Are you sure concerning the supply?|What i don’t realize is actually how you’re no longer actually a lot more well-liked than you might be right now. You’re so intelligent.

Think! You’re right i shouldn’t ASSume you are a thinker, saying that Ault hired him to do nothing but be a position coach and give him the OC title, great QB coach, but we’ll never know how good an OC he will be until he is given the reins to an offense with all decision making for the offense in his hands……..I think he would be great, I think he’s a great coach, I hope his last year at UH as OC was not a reflection of his Offensive Coordinator abilities, Don’t think he got his fair chance yet……..as an OC.

Tom, I told Kekoa that Hanabusa was a shoo-in…and I was confident that June Jones would never come to Hawaii. Moral of the story…on any of my picks, bet your house on the other horse!

Should Hanabusa run in 2014, I believe that a tremendous backlash against Abercrombie/Schatz will get her in. Many will view the selection of Schatz as a direct slap to Inouye (logic will not play a role here) and will act accordingly at the polls. I believe Abercrombie has made a serious mis-calculation in evaluating how deep the support for Inouye runs. That’s as much as I will say about politics until 2013. Life’s too short.

    BG

  107. jimmy the lock December 26, 2012 2:56 pm

    @tommui

Thanks for the refresher from the Gov/Lt. Gov elections voter %tages. It may be difficult to knock out incumbents but didn’t Case get KO’d? Anyway, it’s only my opinion and that isn’t worth much nowadays (lol), I don’t think Schatz is going to have the “popular” vote come 2014. I also don’t think Mufi does either. In faq, I don’t know who will have the popular vote come 2014. Maybe and up and coming younger gun will appear in 2014.

Should be interesting come 2014 and 2016.

Not surprised people would not know who the Lt. Gov is. Concerning but not a new problem.

  112. Bowwar December 26, 2012 3:46 pm

Abercrombie will LEARN that you never honor a guy by denying him his “last wish.” People in Hawaii don’t forget that kind of thing and the “bachi” is already in place for Abercrombie not being reelected and Schatz being replaced in 2014…Dat’s just not the “local way”.

  113. Gsky December 26, 2012 3:47 pm

    #107 jimmy the lock.

Case was an incumbent Representative when he decided to try to knock out an incumbent Senator. Shame – he would have had quite a bit of seniority in the House by now.

It would have been nice to honor Senator Inouye’s request to have Representative Hanabusa appointed for the remainder of his term.

She is a capable, hardworking individual. In the long run she would have been somewhere in her late 80s or early 90s before she built up any meaningful seniority in the Senate. I would have preferred another young candidate myself but Schatz will do if he survives re-election.

  134. al December 26, 2012 9:04 pm

Well, whatever favors I owed Dan and his requested replacement…well, I’m off the hook. I owed Dan, not his state.

    #134 AL:

Hard to say: I rather doubt it. But it would depend on how much courage the Governor has.

Dan has always had the best interest of Hawaii at heart and perhaps that is why he was always being a “king-maker” endorsing this politico or that politico for office – whether the office was a political office, judicial or what-have-you.

But everyone has what they consider being in the “best interest” whether it is politics, or family, or even coaching or in choosing the best formation/system that the UH football should use.

I think the single-wing would be the in the best interest for UH!

I am hoping that Mr. Schatz would be elected in the next election and re-elected and gain the same type of influence as DKI had – this would probably be the best in the long-run interest of Hawaii.

That being said, Representative Hanabusa has the ability and knowledge that the late-Senator realized might be good for the immediate well-being for Hawaii.

So in my convoluted way, maybe if Gov. A was going to run again, he might be, in the interest of not offended anyone and in his best interest, influenced greatly in appointing Representative Hanabusa.

As for our new OC or QB coach to be.

Rolo has a better chance right now to be Nevada head coach than in Hawaii.

He already “X” out Hawaii when he left in September.

  160. Bleed Green and White December 27, 2012 8:42 am

    (#78 – BigWave96744)

I read your post brother, and to that I respond.

It’s not a “man crush” on Rolo as you call it, instead a “man crush” on the system and it’s results. Period.

If the average fan knew half the crap that I know, and I’m sure Mr. Tsai knows much, much more, they would MARVEL at the success of the UH Football program under Greg McMackin, DESPITE Greg McMackin.

Not to be ugly or anything, but the truth is the truth, Mack was a horrible head coach, too selfish and self-absorbed to let his coaches coach. Like Dave Aranda and Nick Rolovich for instance.

Personally speaking, I do know Nick Rolovich, as a person before I do as a a coach. The guy loves Hawaii, loves football, and desires that all UH Warriors take away with them the same type of life-long memories he got take when his playing time was over.

The kids that played for him at UH, they have much respect and aloha for him. If you ever get a chance, go ask a few, then you will know.

His knowledge of the offense is top notched. Period.

Imagine, 5,000+ yards and what, 39 touchdowns by Bryant Moniz that one season, now imagine how crazy those numbers could’ve gotten had Mack not been the “bubblin’ idiot” of a head guy to get his own way…..to step on his own feet, to impede progress, to well, get in the dam way!!!!!

Okay, I grant you this BigWave, some of my words may make the picture look really ugly back then, truth of the matter is, it was. Do I believe Rolo would make a great addition at UH once again…? Yes! very much so.

Chow’s disciplined ways, which I love by the way, and Rolo’s creative approach….hmmmmm

It’ a little “outside the box” so to speak, but I could see that working. Don’t think I’ll see it happen, but I do see it working……

  161. mikey December 27, 2012 8:54 am

    BG&W

I believe QB/WR coach slot is Open.

Rolo would be a wish list for anyone.

Even if Christmas is long gone.

    GO Warriors in 2013!

  162. mikey December 27, 2012 8:59 am

As for Craig Stutzmann, who was at Idaho St, Rhodes College, currently at Weber St

He has a better chance going to SMU with JJ and TC and expand on R&S.

  163. A-House December 27, 2012 9:32 am

    al:

if the American Samoa player is a garan ball barren, reason for not signing his LOI so he could enroll in January 2013 and experience “spring ball”?

as for Kahuku HS, great, great if additional players will sign with Hawaii – great pipeline to keep open as is the Florida and Texas and Cali lines that feed UH – perhaps, we can increase the players for softball, volleyball, baseball, basketball, women’s track & field, swimming & diving, water polo, golf, etc.

would like to see the same for the Asia-Pacific region for viewership – all it takes is another Ichiro Suzuki to significantly increase the interest in UH academics and sports – best chance is China, Japan, and Korea.
