To boot

There is a presumption of innocence, of course. But if Alex Dunnachie — the only listed punter on the 2012 roster — is found to be guilty of DUI, he will face a suspension. If so, what are the Warriors’ options?

One scenario is to bring in a junior-college punter.

Another is to look at the two placekickers — Tyler Hadden and Kyle Niiro. (CeeJay Santos, who is transferring from Weber State, must redshirt this season.)

The feeling is running back Joey Iosefa also is skilled enough to handle the punting. Iosefa, who moonlights as the wildcat, would be a triple threat as a punter, runner and passer out of punt formation.

Other candidates are slotback Scott Harding, a former Aussie rules football player; running back Samson Anguay, who played soccer for two years at Campbell High, and receiver Chinedu Amadi, who averaged 39.2 yards per punt as a high school senior.

Former Warrior slotbacks Kealoha Pilares (Carolina Panthers) and Greg Salas (St. Louis Rams) signed autographs at the Barefoot League store yesterday. Here’s a video: Pilares/Salas video.

I’m not going to be first.

  2. SteveM July 8, 2012 12:33 am

    😳

Anyway, forgot about Scott Harding–he could be a punter/runner threat too.

Interesting to hear about Iosefa as a triple threat.

  3. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2012 12:39 am

Sorry, you can’t undo the pole position.

  4. A-joe July 8, 2012 12:45 am

Hawaii could solve their punting woes by simply scoring on every possession. =)

  5. Huh? July 8, 2012 12:52 am

Good to c da former warriors…

    Congrats Kimo

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

been thinking about Kapakahi, manoa1, d1shima tommui opinions on Dunnachie.

for me, Coach Chow has my 100% support. 100%. no second guessing him. i’ve made mistakes. Coach has made mistakes too.

He’s carrying the weight of Hawaii football on his shoulders. He’s done good. He’s doing good. Whatever he decides, is good enough for me.

for what its worth, the idea of making a deal with Dunnachie to use a shirt year, or him transferring out so he can go play someplace else, and same for Tachibana, if the evidence is there, hmmmm…

the 3, they defnitely going get dirty. they all have negatively impacted the coach. the team. the university. their names. sorry to say that, but we all know thems da facts. at the USC game, the commentators gonna talk about that on national tv. this i know.

  8. krump1_AKA_protector July 8, 2012 1:45 am

This “blind-side” hit really hurts the team. I agree with A-joe that if the Offense clicks, this would be a moot point. I think the O-Line will come through and the team will move the ball and we won’t have to worry about our QB having only 2 seconds to get rid of the ball.

  9. Wes'side Warrior July 8, 2012 1:48 am

    I vote for Iosefa!

I mean, good morning, everyone! Happy Sunday!

I like that jacket! I want that jacket, I mean.

  10. Wes'side Warrior July 8, 2012 2:08 am

    From yesterday’s blog:

    INNOCENT OBSERVER:

    July 7th, 2012 at 8:21 pm

westside warrior – the kicker was not caught drunk, he was caught driving drunk, which is more egregious, he could have maimed or killed someone, if not himself. yes, kids will be kids and will drink, not only those of age, but those under age, but i am not saying it is okay. however, the coach should provide the behavior rules of being on the team. driving drunk is a crime. being drunk is not a crime unless you affect someone else adversely. since this behavior has repeated itself 3 times on the football team in a relativley short time, any punishment must be enhanced to really deter such behavior.

Don’t know why you’re directing this argument towards me. This has been my main point since it surfaced.

    Wes’side Warrior:

    July 7th, 2012 at 1:50 pm

The drinking age is of no concern. It’s getting caught driving after drinking that’s the stupid part. There’s gotta be a friend somewhere that people can call, instead of taking a chance. Every one of them need to have a phone number to call, and KNOW that they HAVE TO call that number if they’ve had a drink and need a ride back home. No questions. Just call! Dang it!

    Wes’side Warrior:

    July 7th, 2012 at 3:50 pm

All this talk about stress pushing them to drink is kinda off the mark, to me. There’s always been drinking… always been partying. To think otherwise is just plain naive. The issue is that these kids are being caught drinking while supposedly drunk. That is where the focus needs to be. They need to know that if they go out partying, they can get back safely, legally… and not have to resort to taking a chance with anyone’s lives.

Which was then corrected to read:

    Wes’side Warrior:

    July 7th, 2012 at 4:20 pm

My post at 3:50pm above, should read, “The issue is that these kids are being caught driving while supposedly drunk.”

Good Morning! If anything, i hope that no one is given the boot! Young people just need to make better choices when it comes to consumption of alcohol!

Lets hope there’s never a need to punt, but I like the thought of using Iosefa back there!

Nice photos of Pilares and Silas! Pilares’ mom looking good too! The video showed what great friends the two are! Pilares needs to remove his glasses for photos. He shouldn’t hide those amazing eyes and long lashes!

Best wishes to Mr & Mrs Tuyay!

    Oops! Silas should be Salas!

  15. mctruck July 8, 2012 3:38 am

I like the fact that UH has some versatile players who can step in to cover the potential needs of the team.

“Repetition, is the mother of retention.” gotta instill the “Warriors Moral Code” everyday.

Behind you young men and women in ALL UH sports. God Bless.

  16. mctruck July 8, 2012 3:58 am

My former school had a simple phrase, ACHIEVE THE HONORABLE. Maybe UH can implement some phrase whereby students can remember honoring their school whether in scholastics or athletics…be proud to represent as they say.

  17. mctruck July 8, 2012 4:58 am

I was reviewing the MWC home page and couldn’t find where the, HAWAII BOWL was mentioned as a tie-in?? thought it was a done deal?

  18. Shoko July 8, 2012 5:30 am

Hawaii Bowl still a tie-in for 2012. Not sure after that tho.

  21. Steve P July 8, 2012 5:51 am

If Coach Chow boots the punter than there’s others who no doubt can get the job done. I don’t think its a big deal.

  22. d1shima July 8, 2012 6:01 am

    Great Morning All!

    Whew….breathe deep.

    Congratulations M/M Tuyay!

  23. snoozer July 8, 2012 6:03 am

UH is no different than all other college teams that have problems with their boys fighting, cheating, drinking, stealing and/or commiting sexual offenses. I hope Coach disciplines Alex sternly and swiftly, then gets back to business. It will hurt, but someone else will get a chance to step up and might even surprise us. Alex will pay a greater price at the next level as the NFL will brand him as character flawed which will hurt his opportunities and salary potential…lesson learned

  24. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 6:07 am

ST: that video of Pilares and Salas was so cute, it made me laugh. What great friends they are!

  25. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 6:08 am

I am glad that there are possibile players who can step up if or when Dunnachie is suspended.

  26. Shoko July 8, 2012 6:29 am

I think its alot harder to replace a punter than say a place kicker. It takes more than a strong leg and decent hang time. Directional kicking and ryhthym is key and that takes repetition and experience on the field. If you don’t have those qualities down pat, you might see more shanked punts for 15 yards.

  27. Shoko July 8, 2012 6:33 am

Or do a Zendejas for the imfamous “punt for no gain”…lol.

  28. Shoko July 8, 2012 6:37 am

Anywho, I think suspension at most and not a dismissal is in order. Once Chow reads the reports, talks to Alex and the rest of the staff (Demarest), four games seems reasonable. To dismiss him completely in order to set a more stern example is a bit harsh, in my opinion.

  29. Shoko July 8, 2012 6:39 am

Has there been any word on the punishment in Tachibana’s case? I haven’t read anything about that.

  32. BigHiloFan2 July 8, 2012 6:50 am

    The Three Babuuzes.

if anyone of them got a issue with their arrest, which sometimes happens, this I gotta see.

but so far, from what I see, one already pled to his charged DUI.

meanwhile Coach is under the gun. great players looking to come onto this team want to know he is all about perfection and will help them to be more perfect. Trying to be perfect. Thats the image he portrays to me.

Yup, Alex blew it big time. Its up to him to help coach figure a way out of the public jam.

he put himself in the bulls eye. if was me, i’d mutually agree to a 100 day suspension. start today. that way everybody can move on. unless he like go another school. or give up a shirt year. but do something now so the other players know positively that Coach ain’t smessing around.

  33. mo808 July 8, 2012 6:55 am

Shoko @32 according to ST yesterday: “Because this is the offseason, Chow is waiting for Tachibana to complete his court appearance. Due process, and all.

It’s different for Dunnachie because his court appearance is on the third day of training camp. We’ll see what happens.” I think that his court date is in a week or so, after that I guess we’ll hear about the punishment from Chow.

Sorry, you can’t undo the pole position.

    Yup, that’s what she said.

Regarding the UH drunks football team, I’m in favor of kicking all three bad boys off the team. You have got to send a message. Nothing personal, but Chow is not receiving the respect he deserves. Neither is the program or the fans, for that matter.

  35. scott July 8, 2012 6:58 am

Looking at all this from a different angle, big pat on the back HPD for citing drunk drivers and getting them off the road.

  36. A-joe July 8, 2012 7:02 am

Let Chow handle it his way.

Along with these players there’s about a hundred other men on this team that still need our support. Now more than ever.

  37. Steve P July 8, 2012 7:08 am

Redzone hit the nail..this is an opportunity for others who want to get on the field and I agree with ST…dump all three. Playing for UH is a privilege that shouldn’t be rewarded when guys step out of line.

  38. papajoe2 July 8, 2012 7:08 am

Today’s round only” Michelle Wie 4 over after only 6 holes. On Friday she only had 23 putts. There’s only 18 holes. I kind of thought if she missed a relatively short putt, her day would be miserable as all the memories of missed short putts will come back and with her doubting herself, cannot have a good round.

  39. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 7:13 am

ST never said to dump all three. He said they will probably be suspended.

  40. papajoe2 July 8, 2012 7:13 am

#40, Steve P~, I don’t recall that ST wrote anything saying to dump all 3, unless I’m reading your comment wrong.

    Good Morning Gangeez!

Agree with A-joe – offense gotta score on every posession. Defense and special teams need to score a couple of TDs just for good measure.

No mattah what – in Chow we trust.

Yesterday, I think I found the last 2XL black “We will chase Championships” tee shirt left on the island. It was at the convenience store in the car wash! 😆 I snapped dat buggah up right away! 🙂

Anyway, MAHALO to all the other Warriors who’s trainin’ hard and keeping their noses clean. Can’t wait for USC.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

DPK: is Rainbowtique all out of those shirts too? I told hubby to buy at least one Chow Tshirt before the season starts.

  48. Warrior Dave July 8, 2012 8:24 am

The presidence has been set, 4 game suspension. That’s it move on. I do not believe in “off the team” for this type of infraction. Yes someone could have been killed but every time someone steps behind a wheel someone can be killed. Swerve to avoid an animal, blow out of a tire and loose control could also result in loss of a life. Working 2 jobs and you fall asleep at the wheel you endanger a like. So what if these infractions are discussed on national TV. What people like Colt, Davonne and Pisa did was worst in nature but I’d be happy to call them sons for what they did with their lives after getting in trouble.

Lucky we live America where everyone can have and express an opinion. I just did.

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2012 8:24 am

  53. Last Call July 8, 2012 8:41 am

A precedence may apply in a court of law in similar type crimes but Chow isn’t bound by any precedence.Chow can change the punishment any time he wants.

If a certain behavior doesn’t change increasing the punishment is warranted.

In this current wave of DUI’s obviously the punishments dealt to the first player wasn’t enough for others to get the message.

It is time for a change in the punishment policy.

  54. Kevin July 8, 2012 8:42 am

For three cases of arrests there are still HUNDREDS of UHM student-athletes doing just fine.

Instill a moral code in hopes of having student-athletes live up to it????

What a joke! Not even a fair statement to the 99% population of the student-athlete body that have done nothing wrong.

Typical pitchfork and torching classification …

  55. d1shima July 8, 2012 8:43 am

    Sun Tzu says….

  56. Derek July 8, 2012 8:44 am

Logic seems that Tachibana and Dunnachie would miss 4 games the same as Shutter. Seems reasonable. Either way, they all let the team down big time. Coach Chow is not happy and I think he’s right to be angry about the situation. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s going to take a tougher stance on the punishment.

On another matter is Arceneaux officially on staff as co-QB coach and is getting paid or is he an unpaid volunteer? As a co-QB is that full time or part-time. Just to be clear.

Anybody know if Clair played last night and how did he do if he did? Curious.

  57. A-joe July 8, 2012 8:47 am

As of July 1st, Big Island Police have made 698 DUI arrests. 698 who absolutely knew it was wrong to drink and drive, but honestly believed they’d never get caught. 698 represents less than 20% of those that actually got caught. 700 more will be caught by years end simply because they believe it wont happen to them.

Every year throughout our state 135 people NEED to die on our roads. There has never been a year with 0 fatalities. Currently the DOT has a campaign pushing for just 100 deaths this year. They accepted the morbid fact death on our roads is inevitable.

    WOW!!!

We’re at the halfway point of 2012. That means we need about 70 more people amongst us to die unnecessarily on our roads. That’s 70 more people, who at this very moment, have absolutely no idea they’ll never live to see 2013. 70 more unnecessary gut wrenching funerals. This means despite all the efforts put forth by law enforcement, ad campaigns to promote safe driving and countless examples of past traffic deaths, 70 people are still going to suffer an unnecessary death upon our roads this year.

There’s bonuses that come with traffic deaths. One gets to hold vigils at the scene. Erect crosses, place flowers and candles that hold no meaning to drivers who pass by. There’s a possibility to get on TV and share ones grief and heart felt story that everyone will soon forget about the following week.

So… Will it be you? Wow, really? OK, if not you then who amongst your family and friends are you willing to sacrifice? Oh wait! Perhaps you’re selfish and hope those 70 comes from someone else’s circle of family and friends instead. Yeah. That’s a better thought.

God forbid you taunt the Grim Reaper to decide. That happens every time you say, “It’ll never happen to me.”

  58. d1shima July 8, 2012 8:48 am

Stephen’s last comment (IIRC) regarding Arceneaux is that nothing definite has been put in place.

I could be wrong but if he were part of the staff he wouldn’t be able to be out there at the workouts.

  59. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2012 8:57 am

  64. tommui July 8, 2012 9:12 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    A-JOE #60 – Right on!

Undoubtedly every time someone gets behind a wheel, things can happen.

But drinking is a deliberate act. Falling asleep at the wheel or texting or phone calls is a deliberate act – yes, if you are tired and not alert and fall asleep, you deliberately got behind the wheel inspite of your condition.

Tire failure is not a deliberate act.

But as DPK and BHF2 says – in Chow we MUST trust.

  65. tommui July 8, 2012 9:15 am

    AUWE!

Even if Michelle eagle’d the remaining three holes, she can’t redeem the this round.

  66. d1shima July 8, 2012 9:15 am

Therefore, in your deliberations, when seeking to determine the military conditions, let them be made the basis of a comparison, in this wise:

    (4) On which side is discipline most rigorously enforced?

  68. d1shima July 8, 2012 9:17 am

Tu Mu alludes to the remarkable story of Ts`ao Ts`ao (A.D. 155-220), who was such a strict disciplinarian that once, in accordance with his own severe regulations against injury to standing crops, he condemned himself to death for having allowed his horse to shy into a field of corn! However, in lieu of losing his head, he was persuaded to satisfy his sense of justice by cutting off his hair. Ts`ao Ts`ao’s own comment on the present passage is characteristically curt: “when you lay down a law, see that it is not disobeyed; if it is disobeyed the offender must be put to death.”

How’s that for ultimate justice!!! Ha!

Yes, we lost about 55,000 troops in 10 years, but more people were killed in auto accidents every year during those 10 years

yet, did you hear any outcry over this? if any, from MADD. But who else?

  75. A-House July 8, 2012 9:27 am

UH chances are growing dimmer against USC to beat the 38.5 points spread.

  76. Kevin July 8, 2012 9:28 am

There are nearly 400 student-athletes at UH Manoa.

Considering the so-called evils out there for college students to encounter, I take solace in knowing how well 99% of them are handling themselves.

Just like the offensive line on a football team, you know you are doing something right when no one talks about you.

Here’s to the monumental majority of our UHM student-athletes that have done nothing wrong, but are lumped in with a few bad apples by a few holier than thou keyboard masters that walk the earth while walking on water!

She told her parents to stay home, that she needed to be on her own.

  86. A-House July 8, 2012 10:23 am

    #87:

yes, it hurts to lose even one.

but speaking of numbers only, more people were killed in auto accidents every day across the US than a single day in Nam.

  87. Shoko July 8, 2012 10:28 am

If they have a General Tso’s chicken, how come they don’t have a General Tzu’s chicken. Hmm, maybe he didn’t like his chicken spicy.

  88. Shoko July 8, 2012 10:32 am

Here’s a bit of trivia. Which war suffered the most American casualites?

  89. kawika49 July 8, 2012 10:32 am

    #89 those men were’nt numbers.

  90. kawika49 July 8, 2012 10:33 am

Let’s leave it for another day, sorry to all the blog folks.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

I will leave the punishment up to the judicial system and the coaching staff.

gigi – those particular shirts are NOT at Rainbowtique. In general, if something is at Rainbowtique, it’s ONLY at Rainbowtique. The “Chase Championships” shirts are UH-licensed shirts sold at many places, such as Wal-Mart/Sams, Longs, etc…

  93. RedZone July 8, 2012 10:39 am

Da Pliares and da Salas looking good. I can’t wait to follow those 2 teams this upcoming season. Stay healthy guys.

  94. RedZone July 8, 2012 10:41 am

Nam also killed some good people who came back after the war.

  95. PowderPuff July 8, 2012 10:44 am

If NYC wins, her caddie deserves some credit. He is solid, given the roller coaster her early back 9 has brought.

  96. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2012 11:04 am

Just to be clear, I don’t doubt the relationships between players and relatives or fans, nor any information or insights they might provide.

But there probably are some things, if true, that should be left unsaid. For instance, if a player says he’s feeling stressed by the demands of the workout program, then that probably shouldn’t be repeated publicly. There are other schools that visit this site (by the way, our numbers are phenomenal) and, if true, I don’t think the player would appreciate opponents thinking he gets stressed from offseason workouts.

Do players know their complaints are being posted through third parties on Internet boards?

  97. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2012 11:08 am

    Re: Punishment.

I think the four-game suspension was the punishment for the first player.

But violations that occur after repeated warnings are sure to lead to stricter punishments.

    This I know.

  98. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 11:10 am

ST: good warning. But, most players who comment here do so under an alias.

  99. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 11:11 am

Jm: thanks for the heads up. I’ll tell hubby to look for those Chow Tshirts at Walmart, since he passes by there frequently.

  100. Stephen Tsai July 8, 2012 11:19 am

    Re: Intern coach

As I said previously, there is no such intern position at UH.

But if they were to create such a position, and after the lengthy vetting and screening process, the person hired would not be an on-field coach. More likely, the person would handle administrative duties in the office. At least that’s the preliminary ruling from compliance.

  101. Da Punchbowl Kid July 8, 2012 11:26 am

    The Civil War (Northern version).

    He wasn’t already dead?

  106. haka July 8, 2012 12:01 pm

Not so amazingly, with all the comments on DUI, I suspect that there are more than a few posters here guilty of the same. Everyone needs to take driving under the influence seriously. Driving under the influence is a DUI even if you don’t get caught. I had a friend who left a tailgate not knowing that that would be his last game. Everyone here should walk the walk so we can talk the talk.

  107. Capitolist/WassupDoc July 8, 2012 12:02 pm

Although I had my last drink on August 31, 1981, at 11:43 pm, I remember very clearly the hundreds of times I drove after drinking or toking. I don’t ever remember considering the possibility that I might be a danger to anyone – including myself. All I wanted to do was have fun, relax & be part of the gang.

I gave up drinking when I realized that I much preferred to eat the calories than drink them – plus I was concerned that I might become an alcoholic (mother) or die of liver cancer (father).

How many of the T-Regulars who go to T-Gates, Away-Gates, various parties & sporting events at the various venues drink alcoholic beverages & then drive home? Back in the day when we did HI-5 collections at various T-Gate/party locations, we’d collect upwards of 300 beer bottles and cans + half as many non-alcoholic beverage containers. Abstention is not a requirement.

  108. d1shima July 8, 2012 12:06 pm

    😯

  109. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 12:10 pm

Alcohol is also expensive. When hubby and I dine out, we buy 1 glass of champagne each, never a bottle.

  110. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 12:12 pm

I guess people learn their lesson the hard way. I guess I should say most people, because there are some who never learn their lesson and are arrested for DUI multiple times.

  111. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 12:18 pm

So, are we going to drink at the cattle call at Hale Ikena on Thursday? Good question!

Hubby probably won’t, because he is usually exhausted after work and a beer will only make him fall asleep at the party.

Anyway, we are not driving that evening, as Kekoa will pick us up.

  113. kapakahi July 8, 2012 12:41 pm

Don’t know whether too late to be admitted to UH for the Fall Semester, but I would hope that the FB program might consider bringing in a new punter…..maybe at least a walk-on.

Don’t know what his college plans (if any) are but JMHO that former Leilehua HS punter Jeremiah Andrade (who was 3rd team All-State last season) might be a good local walk-on candidate for the FB program to consider.

  114. moelepo619 July 8, 2012 1:08 pm

Bottom line, those who no can handle shouldn’t drink…those who THINK they can handle shouldn’t be driving.

  115. SteveM July 8, 2012 1:08 pm

    RIP Ernest Borgnine.

I first noticed him in McHale’s Navy. Well cast as the skipper of a PT boat crew that could wear Coast Guard shields (emblem) at any time. A few years later, I read that producers intended that, but was changed because the Coast Guard did not operate PT boats in WWII…mostly beach landing craft.

I had to go for a entry physical exam at a Naval facility. The good natured Navy doctor remarked, “So you’re joining McHale’s Navy… Hooligan’s Navy… North Carolina Navy.”. I never understood the reference to North Carolina. 😕

  116. kapakahi July 8, 2012 1:23 pm

    #96,

    Understood.

HOWEVER, the players that are coping better…..still want their own coaches to know what’s going on…..in an indirect manner…..so that the culture of the FB program improves…..in order to yield the desired results…..which should obviously be same goals for everyone in the FB program.

  117. moelepo619 July 8, 2012 1:28 pm

#76 Kevin – I totally agree with you. These 3 are just the dumbest of the dumb. Unfortunately it’s the same in any theater, the dumb ones attract all the attention. These 3 embarrassed the 99%. I think Chows higher demands in the long run will benefit the program by weeding out all the Pupule Kamaiki

  118. d1shima July 8, 2012 1:31 pm

    North Carolina…Carolina Blue…Light Blue….not deep.

    Sabe?

  120. Shoko July 8, 2012 1:40 pm

I wonder how many student-athletes (other than football) got DUI’s that went unreported. If a player does not attract the attention of the public or media when he gets arrested, its probably easier to keep it in-house and just suspend him for “violating team rules”, which wouldn’t draw so much ire among students and fans. Better than hitting the front page of the sports section.

Tom is right. Civil War would have sufficed for me tho. However, you get extra credit for making that distinction between the North and South versions.

  121. Shoko July 8, 2012 1:46 pm

Just some FYI kind stuff regarding players and booze. So skip if no like ’cause its kind of long winded.

Anyway, I read a study intiated by the NCAA about student-athletes and alcohol consumption. What they found out was student-athletes tended to drink more than non-athletes in terms of frequency and quantity. In fact, the results of the study was so disturbing that the NCAA (and various institutions) now consider student-athletes to be an at-risk group for alcohol abuse. Do we have a alcohol problem at UH? I hope not.

With this logic you are already placing suspicion, unproven and unfair suspicion on student-athletes that in fact have done nothing wrong.

Those that have “violated team rules” for academics and absence from study hall of which have nothing to do with DUIs or other real life criminal conduct are now placed in possible suspicion in your eyes.

This is the ignorant and knee-jerk reaction I fully expected from most.

To me this is blatant disrespect of good young individuals that excel on the field/court and in the classroom only to be classified as young punks due to missteps in the law by a few.

It is everyone’s uninformed right to form conclusions on a demographic of people vilified as the bottom dregs of society by those that continue to walk on water in their own minds.

Nosebleeds upon your perch are quite common due to the high altitidue. I hope you are not wearing a white shirt.

To the point, I think your suspicion is unfounded, unfair and quite stupid.

I used to date a doctor who ran marathons. He trained every evening after work, sometimes running 2-3 hrs. After the run, he would go to the store and buy a 6 pack of ice cold beer, and drink all 6 in one sitting. He was so thirsty and he told me the beer relaxed his muscles.

  130. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 2:31 pm

Shoko, to your point, here’s what was posted on another forum:

“I think it is time for Norm to start kicking these guys off the team– maybe then they will stop.

Just watched a story last week on the woman killed from out Kahuku side– friend of the Fehoko’s and others out there– drunk driver came across the line and hit her as she was headed to work.

The police need to let Norm know something I just found out from talking to a police officer– they could have caught three more UH players over the last two weeks for DUI, but they were all very close to home, so the officers sent them straight home– lucky for them and the team, but see what happens now (BTW, I do not condone letting guys go– but it happens I know a relative who was stopped a few blocks from his house and sent on his way).”

This is from a respected poster. Not sayin’ that all UH athletes are all angels or all devils, but surely where there’s smoke, there’s fire. And yes Shoko, you entitled to your opinion without being called stupid for it. Just sayin. Where’s the aloha?? Gotta keep the aloha on the blog or it will turn off many, many readers.

  136. tom mui July 8, 2012 3:24 pm

Under ordinarily circumstances, when someone is arrested for DUI, a report is made by the arresting officer. Unless there is some birdie involved, the usual routine is for an enterprising young reporter to check the arrest reports and that can get boring unless a name like some celebrity or well-known person in the community pops up.

In short, unless if it is a really recognized person, it doesn’t appear in the papers. So someone like a fifth-string player on the Zoology lab touch football team or Joe Blow, free-lance janitor, wouldn’t make the papers.

So an arrest of a janitor for DUI does not mean ALL janitors are condemned as drunks.

  137. JV July 8, 2012 3:27 pm

Mr Tsai is the new outside hitter recruit a german named Tom Strombach? I saw that on another site.

  138. Richfromoc July 8, 2012 3:29 pm

I would allow each player whom was arresred to play but suspend their scholarships for a semester. Another offense would relinquish their full scholarship lifetime and off the team for a year. If they want to play after the year, they have to pay for their schooling to play.

    Here’s a funny interlude, a true story:

One night, hubby was driving home from the gym, and there were so many potholes in the road that he had to weave in and out of his lane.

Well, a cop stopped him and asked him if he had been drinking.

Hubby still had a towel around his neck and shoulders and was still red and sweaty from the gym. He explained why he was weaving.

Since there was no alcohol on his breath, hubby was released and he drove home.

Bighilofan2 — do you have any info who is bringing what to the Big Island Cattle Call next week? I know you’ll have a lot of people and long-time lurkers–and enough fuud to last thru Monday– but gotta look organized, no? 😆

BTW, we’ve had a lot of bloggers from the Big Island over the years… here’s your chance to finally meet!

  142. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 4:16 pm

All those who are organizing a cattle call this month: No forget to take pictures and post them on the blog. SteveM will probably add them to his site, also.

  143. J-FORCE July 8, 2012 4:18 pm

Small kine irritation, but just gotta learn and move on. Pretty sure more drama

    negatives. That’s just my observation.

    Go Warriors!!

    Go Niners!!

  144. SteveM July 8, 2012 4:20 pm

I haven’t spoken to LK or anything, but he has tendency to generously make Tsai-ko name badges for verified Tsai-kos appearing at a Tsai-ko event for the first time. I think all listed attendees to the last Big Island gathering at Panaewa all got tags, although a couple weeks late.

No listee = no name tagee (or the chance thereof)

BTW, I have a story of the day Bighilofan2 got his name tag…

It was February 15, 2008 at the Makino Chaya Cattle Call for visiting las vegas (rasu begasu). Met and talked with him for the first time. He confided that he sometimes used different blog names, depending where he was getting his free wifi. rasu begasu was shocked to hear that.

But Bighilofan2 fingered his new Tsai-ko name tag and mentioned that he was going to UHafter lunch and talk to Herman Frazier about the schedule and other problems. Uh-huh…yeah, right. 🙄

The next day, ST asked “Who is this Bighilofan2 guy? I just got a complaint from Herman…”. 😯

Boy, good thing ST has a sense of humor….

  145. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 4:23 pm

I can see it already BHF2. The FOX Sports reporter will be broadcasting ‘live’ from the sidelines of the UH game Sep. 1st. The first 10 minutes will be a special report on the alledged DUI darlings of the UH team. Everyone watching will get a first hand account of each incident, and all the sordid details.

I say the team responds by crushing USC and giving those reporters the fickled finger at the news con after the game. There’ll be too much football to talk about then.

For now, let’s focus on the true leaders on our team. The guys who put in the blood, sweat and tears, when nobody is watching. The ones who train unsupervised to reach or maintain a higher standard.

    Pull together Warriors!

Gigi, #141, I have been pulled over 3 for driving the EXACT speed at night with no one the road.

On all occurrences, the cop asked why I was driving too slow.. (how you figgah?)

Once when I was just out of college I was given the walking and eye vision test. I passed then the cop asked why I was shivering like a mad man, then I said, “uh officer its 2am, its 60 degrees and I’m wearing a tank top!”

Bone head rookie cop with attitude said, “next time drive faster you punk”

Dude really wanted to get one on his nightly tally sheet after wasting over an hour under the bridge by Aloha Stadium.

Funny thing was I had a long pony tail back then. As I left I waved to him in a exagerated broke wrist koamahu style, and said, “Aloha!!!”

  158. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 5:49 pm

BigWave: too funny!!!! These cops, I tell ya! Crazy!

Oh and koamahu, go easy, my wrist no stay broke

  161. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 6:01 pm

I have been ticketed twice: once for jaywalking and once for blocking the intersection when the light turned red.

    I am more careful now.

  162. Bigconfession July 8, 2012 6:18 pm

    BigWave96744

i can honestly say I’ve seen it both ways. good and bad. hoping for more good for our team.

    Kekoa,

i’m rootin like you’re rootin, except fo me I also like see Abe get da look 😯 an Demo an Thom an all da coaches jumpin up an down an going nutz on our sideline.

brake time. see you hi ho hi ho.

  164. Shoko July 8, 2012 6:29 pm

    Manoa,

I understand that you believe more stern measures must be taken to stem this trend. However, in this case, based on the first offense and no history of improprieties committed by the accused, a complete dismissal would be considered a bit severe in my book regardless of previous verbal warnings. In fact, when I learned of Shutter getting the four-day suspension, I was a bit surprised. I was expecting 1-2 days at the most. I base this on other programs and the actions they took when dealing with their players in a similar situation. Now, if Chow decided to sanction Alex by suspending him for more than four games short of the season, I can agree with that as it would still allow Alex to continue his education.

Of course, this is just my oipnion that some or most might disagree with. Yet, I’m perfectly fine with that. 🙂 All I know is that I would hate to be Chow. I can almost see his face red and blood pressure boiling when he found out. But I think he’s been around long enough to not make snap judgements based on emotions.

  165. Shoko July 8, 2012 6:32 pm

Okay, definitely pau talking about this DUI stuff.

Time to get ready for Schleep.

  166. al July 8, 2012 8:31 pm

not to change the subject, however…brian mcinnis had a nice post on the new mbb players who just arrived. caleb dressler, 6-10 center for example.

  167. BigHiloFan2 July 8, 2012 8:32 pm

live me in the pickle jar long enough and I become liberal. 😀

after reading about what da Catholic doing at Notre Dame, their situation

I’d say Coach Chow wen over react to Shutter.

but we ended up with Shroeder.

we also have ended up with a great great coaching staff.

Chow’s not fat. is he a killa? I kinda hope so.

  168. BigHiloFan2 July 8, 2012 9:03 pm

Coach Chow. Kulia i ka nu’u.

Thats how I think of you. and alot of others do too.

You can do it, Coach. Yes you can!

teach the Warriors how to do that by being that kind of example.

Strive for the best. For yourself. For all of us.

Only saw him on TV, but Miah Andrade reminds me a lot of another Miah — Ostrowski. Tough kid, good hands, effortless running style. Besides playing at wideout, he returned punts and kickoffs, and also punted.

  170. al July 8, 2012 9:13 pm

bhf2…did you indicate that your brother recently passed away?

  171. al July 8, 2012 9:17 pm

is jeremiah andrade related to the andrade who ran circles around everyone while playing for waialua hs back in the mid-late 60’s? (also, a 100yd dash champ)

i know one tsaiko who still remembers how fast he turned the corner and was a cloud of dust thereafter. still can hear the “beep, beep”, that same one that haunted wily coyote.

  172. BigHiloFan2 July 8, 2012 10:04 pm

When my brother killed a deer on Molokai, it was too heavy to carry on his shoulders. So he cut it open right there, carved the meat, and put it in his backpack. That’s how he managed to bring the cut up deer home.

  191. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 10:53 pm

Yeah, I gotta admit I am citified. My brother was more country. He liked to go hunting and fishing.

  192. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 10:54 pm

He died in 2003 just 1 month before his 56th birthday.

  193. BigHiloFan2 July 8, 2012 10:55 pm

    BHF2,

Sorry to hear about the passing of your bro. Love to the ‘ohana. I was at that lunch with you and Rasu Begasu. My first CC, too. That’s when I discovered that the Tsaikos were nice people to hang out with and you’ve now become ‘ohana. Hiyah, Susan!

    Night!

  197. gigi-hawaii July 8, 2012 11:07 pm

My neighbor sang karaoke tonight. So loud. She used a mike. Sang Vietnamese songs and sounded kind of off key, because her intonation didn’t match the music.
