After last week’s sweep of BYU on senior night, the lament was that the home volleyball season had ended too soon. That’s what happens when matches are missed in January and February.
After last night’s loss to Pepperdine, the volleyball season is over — also too soon. That’s what happens when matches are missed in January and February.
The Rainbow Warriors won 13 league matches, and that would have been good for a fifth seed in last year’s eight-team MPSF playoffs. Instead, the Warriors finished ninth, with a head start on the offseason.
What was the difference? It started with Pacific, UC San Diego and California Baptist. Those three were worse than expected, with their only MPSF victories against each other. That meant the other 10 MPSF teams could have virtually penciled in six victories, much like the old belief that a student earned 200 points for signing his name on the SAT.
If the safe number was 15 for a playoff berth, then a team needed to go 9-9 against the other 10 teams. For UH, that meant earning nine victories in a schedule in which 10 of those 18 matches matches were on the road. (With the exception of UH, MPSF teams play home-and-home schedules against each other each year. Because of Hawaii’s distance, for instance, UH and UC Irvine met twice in Honolulu this year but none in Irvine, then play twice next year in Irvine but not in Honolulu.) With UH’s struggles on the first night of two-matches road series — it was 1-4 — that put pressure to not let key matches slip away. At a glance, there were three such losses — fifth-set defeats to UC Irvine and Stanford and either match against UC Santa Barbara.
The lesson, coach Charlie Wade said, “is some of those matches back in January and February, you think you’ve got all year to make it up, and you don’t. The MPSF every night is a playoff game.”
The Warriors, undersized at nearly every position, played grittily each match. UH, USC and Pepperdine return most of their top players next season. (UH’s matches against USC and Pepperdine will be in Honolulu next year.) Those are things to consider during this extended offseason. For this relatively good season, time ran out for the Warriors.

It rained. The ACT was held at the same time. The Kamehameha prom was that night.
Yet, there was a large turnout for Junior Day on the Manoa campus. Several of the top prospects for the 2015 recruiting class were there, including Saint Louis’ Fred Ulu-Perry, considered one of the top offensive linemen in the state.
Ulu-Perry said it was a good experience, and UH is a consideration. He has received eight scholarship offers, but probably will take all five allotted visits before deciding on the weekend before signing day next February.

During the 2007 season, UH players noted that if they did well with limited resources (ie: soap), imagine how they would do with resources.
Reggie Torres is now going to coach at a school that has resources.
Hopefully, Perry decides to stay home…Good to hear that Reggie Torres landed at Punahou. I wonder where Miano will end up.
Ulu-Perry will have a number of BCS offers, no doubt. On the other hand, if he signs with UH, he has a chance to learn and play O-Line from a pretty good teacher in Chris Naeole, IMHO.
Resources and facilities and the new Rec Center: I still recall when UH’s weight room was an attached room to Klum Gym about the size of a large 2- car garage back in the 70s. On the other hand, they had some very strong players who really worked their okoles off in that small facility. Guys like Levi Stanley, Dan Audick, Don Herrold, Cliff Laboy, among others.
I remember when during a rainstorm, the Quarry (as the lower campus was called) flooded and several portables housing the football offices floated off their foundations.
Ulu-Perry is the grandson of my fellow diehard Road Warrior’s brother; so hopefully he can convince him to play for the home team!

There should be a lot of admiration for high school coaches. There’s little money and long hours. Not even sure of the advancement opportunities. JJ brought in Dan Morrison, Ron Lee, and, eventually, Cal Lee. But it seems if you want a college coaching job, you need to coach in college (i.e. graduate assistant).

I think Kolby Kanetake had a wrist, finger or hand injury — something in that area — which probably affected his passing float serves. But give the guy credit. He never complained, battled every match, and had a fairly good season.
Actually HS coaches, well successful ones, have a natural pipeline into college, and sometimes, the NFL.

Makes me want to dust off my clubs and make a comeback….oh wait, I was never there. hehe
I have gotten over my golfing addiction, there was a period, 8-9 years ago, played 4-5 times a week, spent countless time on practice range and golfing stores….Mrs. Boola, drew a slight line in the sand, “bruddha, too much time on the links–not enough at home”–point taken, and downshifted.
The biggest problem or in my case, the impetus to play a lot less, despite getting it down to 12-13 handicap (I know, still not great), I was enjoying myself less and less. Before it was about meeting up with the boys and have a good time, then I just got obsessed, and I was not fun to be around.
But, watching today, I started to clean off the pings….
watching these guys golf, how cum wen i get in trouble i make double or triple bogey, but these guys salvage pars????? maybe i should just stay with cooking, laundry, and fishing.

Golf is an exploiting game. Whatever it is: your temper, your impatience, your overconfidence, your lack of technical skill…etc It will exploit you.

Read that successful high school baseball coaches in Japan drive BMWs and are compensated quite well. The national high school baseball championships at Koshien are televised on NHK. On the other hand, Japanese coaches are also notorious for physically abusing their players.

Kawika49—Actually funny story….my best friend from Hawai’i, ended up being this Punahou, him Waialae, me Halawa—who would have thunked it. Anywho, many years ago, Waialae Club House burnt down, and his pops, was a one-time President of WCC, well they found a couple sets of Ping heads, but of course the shafts were pau. Well, many years later, after I had taken up golf, he reshafted the entire set of Ping heads for me, and gave it to me for a surprise for my B_day.

golf isn’t for me, I’ll stick to bowling. Ball always comes back, I don’t have to look for it, with air-condition, food & drinks available, and my high school athletic “letter” looked same as the jock’s.

Yes these last few years were bad……but you know Fei Jai I find your relentless, repetitive and quite honestly boring commentary just as bad and at times just a bit worse. You have nothing new to say. It’s the same except things are awful and you hate Norm Chow. I think it was Anais Nin who wrote that “we do not see the world as it is but as we are.” I think this would be a very good aphorism for you to study.
