Thursday’s notes

Diane Chow is back home after spending more than two weeks recovering from a brain aneurysm at UCLA Medical Center. This is a positive step in her recovery.

* * * * *

Agenhart Ellis, who has deep ties to UH football program as a former player and father of a former player, gave the pep talk at the end of this morning’s practice. Ellis’ son — Agenhart Ellis III — is Punahou’s defensive coordinator.

* * * * *

Coach Norm Chow and athletic director Ben Jay will be among hundreds attending a rally against domestic abuse today. The walk will begin at the state capitol.

* * * * *

The Warriors had another brisk practice today. They also are expected to continue the recent trend of conducting a modified practice on Friday instead of a walk-through session. Once again, Ikaika Woolsey took the first-team reps. Beau Reilly was No. 2, although he had extensive work.

* * * * *

The Warriors will be wearing retro uniforms for Saturday’s game. They have made quite a few fashion statements, from all-dark uniforms to white shoes to the retro look. Credit equipment specialist Al Ginoza for his work as fashion coordinator.

    Goooood morning, Tsai-kos!

Glad you made it back here, Tsai-meister!

    Cheeehu!

    How was da practice?

  6. UHfan808 October 23, 2014 10:13 am

Let’s keep truckin’ for the kids and coaches and good of our program for the sake of our community!

Like one of us Tsaikos says:

Show the kids our community can stick together!

If you have problems with the coaching or ADministrating, call for one appointment (with said coach(es) and/or AD), put on your Sunday best (we’re talking more about how you going say what you going say – no say um so you get thrown out of the office is my suggestion), gather your thots, and keep that appointment.

At said appointment, thoughtfully and respectfully let them know exactly what you think about what should be changed and why.

They might ask you for the how part, so maybe be prepared to provide that too in case they ask. You know how it is with the how: the how part gets equated with “micromanaging” 😉

  7. UHfan808 October 23, 2014 10:15 am

Oh great news about Mrs. Coach Chow!

Sounds like you’re doing better – Heal up well and good and take care! 🙂

Best wishes to Mrs. Chow, prayers for her speedy recovery.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  11. gigi-hawaii October 23, 2014 10:27 am

Glad to hear that Mrs. Chow is recovering at home. It is always better to be in your home than in a hospital.

  12. gigi-hawaii October 23, 2014 10:28 am

Beautiful day today. The sun is out.
    Let’s all be happy.

    Best wishes for Mrs. Chow!

    Retro uniforms… great!

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

    Speedy recovery Diane Chow!

  16. Andrew October 23, 2014 11:00 am

Is that the same retro uniform from last season? Or did they design a new one?

  17. Stephen Tsai October 23, 2014 11:21 am

    Andrew:
I believe it’s the same ones.

  18. Stephen Tsai October 23, 2014 11:22 am

If anybody gets a chance to take part in homecoming festivities tomorrow, check out the Warrior Center. That rec center — it’s open to alumni, too, for a small fee — is the best building on campus.

  19. Andrew October 23, 2014 11:23 am

They should have the band wear their retro uniforms too. haha I’m grateful I did not have to wear those.

maybe he just got a temporary ‘cramps’ huh…

  22. cocobean October 23, 2014 11:42 am

Diane, wishing you a speedy recovery.

  23. hwnstyll October 23, 2014 11:44 am

why are we practicing on friday instead of letting our players legs rest?
Its not like we have a complicated offense and alot of different formations.
Beemer, Captains please speak up. It is mid season and players need as much rest time as they can get.

  24. 4-Prong October 23, 2014 11:58 am

post #23. This is exactly why coaches don’t listen to fans.

  25. cocobean October 23, 2014 12:00 pm

st. tony. Don’t worry about tiki. He’ll show up again, maybe not as tiki but he’ll be back.

  26. Boolakanaka October 23, 2014 12:02 pm

Aloha All. Playing the seven degrees of separation from June Jones game–hitting the college football gossip wire–5 million+, per year, to Mack Brown, to replace JJ at SMU….

  27. 4-Prong October 23, 2014 12:06 pm

    wow.

  28. st. anthony trojan October 23, 2014 12:28 pm

hwnstyll…. omg…the offense has been getting ‘mucho’ rest every game…
4 plays.. back to the bench n ‘rest’..
we should not spoil them.. they are in a rhythm u know..he he he

yea i am sure he will be ‘coco” but at least we have a reprieve for a few days..

  29. oneseason October 23, 2014 12:36 pm

SteveM #161 (yesterday) … $2.50 for a 16 ounce bottle of water is a lot. But $12.95 (see link), some plastic bags, and trips to the restroom will get you 30 quarts of drinking water. That’s only $0.22 for 16 ounces, over a 10X savings!

  31. NotNasti October 23, 2014 12:47 pm

ST: The Warrior Rec Center is not accessible to all . . . UH athletes. There are pictures of five people at the front desk of the center. These five people have been banned from the center for violating the rules against bullying and harassment of patrons and staff. Three of the banned athletes are football players (two starters). The other two are basketball players (one starter).

  32. hwnstyll October 23, 2014 12:53 pm

    #24 ?
Show me one DIV I team that has practice day before game?
You do walk thrus the day before to rest the legs, Defense played an extra 15 minutes last week and if you doubt an extra day of not practicing is good for the legs than I guess you are not informed. Sorry I just want our players to be as fresh as they can be thats all. Obviously last weeks practice resulted in a opening TD drive against or defense and 1 hail mary touchdown for our O. SO where is the benefit?
Why are we having our players warm up for 20 minutes and run around for another 40 minutes in the 10th week of the season? what exactly is that extra time going to do now? Maybe try huddling once in awhile so players can talk to each other instead of all these misinterpeted hand signals? I dunno do something.
Did we practice friday before Wyoming? Nope

  33. st. anthony trojan October 23, 2014 12:53 pm

not nasti….wow…maybe that is a problem up there that we not can see or hear about..huh…

    wondering if have a bullying team-mates ?????

  34. (Jesse)James October 23, 2014 1:19 pm

    NotNasti….Too bad about that… 🙁

  35. NotNasti October 23, 2014 1:25 pm

I hope the coaches were informed. How do you earn the support of the student body if you have a reputation of bullying them?

  36. st. anthony trojan October 23, 2014 1:31 pm

maybe the coach is not the disciplinarian that we think he is…if u know that nasti..then surely coach must know…

then why are them 3 on the FT.. … SUSPENDED FOR AT LEAST ONE GAME ?

  37. jeezy33 October 23, 2014 1:38 pm

    32. Agreed… one extra practice isn’t going to answer anything offensively.. that work should have been done in off season instead of making desperate moves. Kids should rest up.

  38. jeezy33 October 23, 2014 1:40 pm

I don’t think huddling is a issue though… the one dumb thing I notice about our no huddle is when we get into any kind of rhythm, we never pick up the tempo to gash the defense when they get tired or out if position… we no huddle but constantly use the whole play clock… mix it up..

  39. st. anthony trojan October 23, 2014 1:41 pm

awww maybe he is like a BJ…who said “we are talking to our people” about the self sanction…YET coach arnold says just the opposite.. he ‘knows nothing’…like sgt. schultz…

maybe BJ WAS TALKING TO ‘tiki’ …he he he

or like the coaches at UNC… we never heard an of that…

  40. Boolakanaka October 23, 2014 1:43 pm

NotNasti–wow, that is really disappointing to hear. So, while I came from an era when there were virtually no choirboys, but fisticuffs was strictly among the players–or in other words, beef, then makeup, and go drink.

Bullying students, is nothing short of inexcusable, and frankly a cowards errand. Makes me sad to hear this–losing season is one thing, this quite another…sad.

  41. Inyoface October 23, 2014 2:10 pm

Under Armour needs to get rid of those pants.

  42. cocobean October 23, 2014 2:12 pm

NotNasti. Just curious. Where did you come by this information?

  43. NotNasti October 23, 2014 2:30 pm

cocobean: Someone very very close to me works there. I will not name names, but given who they are, very disappointing. Very. A friend of mine suggested they hire Olin Kreutz, or a former UH Football player to “enforce” the rules.

  44. ai-eee-soos October 23, 2014 2:30 pm

    add to speculation …

Oct. 6. Texas: Joe Jamail, the attorney of Mack Brown, tells Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman that SMU has indeed reached out to Brown and that Brown has already received head coaching offers

with comparable pay to what he was earning at Texas.

Brown tweeted last week that he won’t decide on whether he’ll coach or not until December. Draw your own conclusions.

  45. Boolakanaka October 23, 2014 2:39 pm

44 Meaning, he is going to see what other openings are on the market after folks get the ax…….

  46. st. anthony trojan October 23, 2014 2:43 pm

BJ should make n offer to mr. mack… n offer 1 million..we know he will not accept..but put us in a good light huh..

  47. Warrior Dave October 23, 2014 3:01 pm

    #46,

Why would UH want Mack Brown to coach here? He couldn’t win at Texas with a top 5 recruiting g class every year and an unlimited budget due their TV network and mega rich boosters. Mack would not be the answer here.

  48. st. anthony trojan October 23, 2014 3:10 pm

that was a big fat ‘tongue in cheek’…he has been offered 5 times more elsewhere….why in heavens name would he be idiotic to even look at it…

but with the foot in mouth AD’s statements to the regents..offering 1 million..maybe give sum ‘potential’ recruits…n open mind…n we not going to ‘close shop’….

  49. Andrew October 23, 2014 3:11 pm

    47.

He did win at Texas. He just had a few average years at the end of his career there.

  50. Ipu Man October 23, 2014 3:32 pm

Having been a running back many eons ago, what I hated was that after a
successful long, long, run, they would always hand me the ball on the next play…and most times I was too pooped to pop. Same goes for Lakalaka and the boys. Give them a rest if they go long. Alternate. Alternate. Alternate.
    Go Bows.

  51. st. anthony trojan October 23, 2014 3:37 pm

ha ha ipu man.. that was punishment ‘4’ doing good he he he

  52. Turfwar October 23, 2014 4:21 pm

3-Prong about Creighton- My son hated it there for three years but in May, after 7 years he will start his young life at the age of 24 with a six figure salary. I will never see that kind of money so I agree that an education in the health/medical field from that school really is a deal compared to what I would have spent at a Cali school where they are all over $50,000 per year. SC is over $60K. Feel for a kid taking a student loan these days. It will stick with them for a very long time. Recently read an article where one of the problems hurtingthe elderly today is delinquent student loans that are now haunting them at a time in their lives where they have a limited income.

  53. hatakeman October 23, 2014 4:47 pm

Ipu Man, thank you for your post. Confirms what I thought, but I am afraid the current coaching staff has other thoughts. It would be a nice surprise if they started rotating three or four running backs to allow the top two to rest between carries. They’re not winning so I can’t see where it would hurt. Even bring in Beau Reilly for a couple of series if the offense stagnates. Well, just my thoughts.

  54. Waikapu October 23, 2014 4:47 pm

Warrior Dave #47. As usual you have no idea what you are talking about buddy. Why don’t you take a hike? Mack Brown’s Texas team won at least 10 games from 98 to 08, the longest active streak in the nation at that time. They won the 2005 National Championship – what more you like from the dude? How is that not winning at Texas? He was the 2006 Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year. Couldn’t win? Maybe you don’t know how to read?

  55. Warrior Dave October 23, 2014 4:59 pm

    #54,

Yes Mack had glory years. To bad the last 2-3 years was below the standard he set for himself and the fans of Texas football. If they were satisfied he would still be there.

  56. Z October 23, 2014 5:43 pm

When asked today about their success Peyton Manning said one of the reasons is that everybody is running full speed all the time. That i what i would like to see from our receivers. All the time.

  57. pollypicador October 23, 2014 5:54 pm

To answer the question: Why did the team practice harder than usual last Friday the day before the San Diego State game?

The team’s practice was longer than usual to benefit IW. With IW out for the week the coach decided to run 8 stations (which is half the amount of a normal practice), and all the offensive plays, to give his QB a tune up. Another fact is that Chow normally would take a walk thru of the opponents stadium but since it was easily exposed to spying eyes the coach decided to hold practice elsewhere (esp. since IW was going through all the offensive plays).

In a normal situation the team practices light on the Fridays before the games.

I agree with the poster that wrote “take Nevada, easy money.”

  58. Derek October 23, 2014 6:36 pm

41, not only the pants. We should get rid of UA. Notice ever since we signed on with them we’ve been losing, worse and worse. Not only the football program. Negotiate a new deal with Nike. Top programs all go with the Swoosh. Fla. St., Alabama, Ole Miss, Ore., Wash., USC, Mich. St., Ohio St., TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma, etc. Even Boise St. But, I agree, the pants are god awful. What happened to the tapa design?

  59. 3-Prong October 23, 2014 6:54 pm

Turfwar: i’m sure you’ll agree that was money well spent. I tell mine to pick up the tab when we go out once in a while. hehe

  60. 4-Prong October 23, 2014 6:55 pm

hwnstyll: please tell me what exactly is UH’s practice schedule on friday, and why you think that the modified practice schedule is so taxing that it’s affecting game performance (not that it really matters. UH can be the most well rested team and still be terrible this season). Please explain to me the difference between UH’s modified practice schedule and a regular full blown practice and its effects on the players for game day.

Also please elaborate on your argument that because “we don’t have a complicated offense and a lot of different formations” that the extra practice time isn’t necessary for woolsey or whoever is playing quarterback this week. Because this sounds like a load of crap to me. Woolsey needs reps. actually, all the qbs and the offense needs reps. although i’m willing to bet money that the modified practices aren’t the same as full blown practice days.

I wasn’t interested in googling practice schedules for specific teams, but to my knowledge, oregon ducks run modified practice schedules on fridays ranging from walkthroughs to “fast fridays.” I’m assuming other division I teams will run some kind of modified practice when the coaches feel the need for the extra development time.

On the NFL side, the eagles actually run full practices on fridays, from what i heard, based off their sports science metrics that say practices the day before games are actually better versus simple walkthroughs.

  61. 4-Prong October 23, 2014 7:11 pm

#55 Warrior Dave: So… uh.. are you admitting that Mack Brown actually WON with his top 5 recruiting classes? because throughout his career, he actually did. His last season was 8-5 or something like that. So yeah, I’m sure he’d be much more than good enough to coach UH (even if Mack Brown wanted the job and UH could afford him).

  62. Brad October 23, 2014 7:22 pm

(Mental note: Think i’m gonna go pick up some Zip Pacs and a pound of Spicy Ahi Poke from Kaneohe Foodland, grind and tailgate, then go into the stadium early pick up some free rally towels that their giving out. Then test the waters and stay for the first half. If we’re doing ok i’ll stay till the end. If we’re getting crushed i’ll drive home early and at least feel happy that I had some good grinds and free towels for the bathrooms 🙂

  63. Warrior Dave October 23, 2014 7:38 pm

    #61,

For a Coach to continually recruit a top 5 class every year, I would expect more than 8 wins.

Mack Btown would not be my choice for UH HC.

  64. beans October 23, 2014 7:42 pm

Larry Cole, Golden Richards, a couple of UH players that were part of the Superbowl winning Dallas Cowboys. I think that they were left off the list the other day of some of the UH players that played in the old termite palace and went on to do well in the NFL.
What brothers START for both UH and Punahou this year?

  65. beans October 23, 2014 7:49 pm

I think that the Eagles play on Sunday………..(:-)
So Friday practice wouldn’t be the day before.
I did hear that some of the UH player would have rather had more rest on Friday though. Not that they are necessarily right however. It is the coaches call. They just are trying to figure out how to win.

  66. beans October 23, 2014 7:50 pm

    player’s call

  67. 4-Prong October 23, 2014 8:04 pm

Warrior Dave: at the time mack brown exited texas, they had the 16th ranked recruiting class. 8 wins in the big 12, and historically, a very successful program. Mack Brown was a pretty damn good coach with solid recruiting and national championships under his belt. Even his last three seasons in texas (that got him fired) were winning ones with trips to a second tier bowl.

Whether or not you would want him at UH (which, we both know that there’s no way in hell he’s coming here), you can’t deny that Mack Brown has been one of the most successful coaches in college football. the man has pedigree.

  68. 4-Prong October 23, 2014 8:05 pm

beans: you’re right. i mistyped. it woudl be saturdays, not fridays.

  69. Graham October 23, 2014 8:08 pm

I think we can stop talking about nack brown at UH. He would want 10x what chow makes. Our next coach needs to be an up and comer who is cheap and can get players

  70. Hawaiian October 23, 2014 8:19 pm

    Hey Stephen,

What’s the status of Lawrence L. (from UW) and Jared Afalava (from NU)? Are there any others who want to transfer to UH?

  71. BigWave96744 October 23, 2014 8:41 pm

    Stop fantasizing about Mack Brown…
He will NEVER come here for peanuts……
    http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/10/23/report-smu-floating-4-million-annually-to-entice-mack-brown/

  72. islandman October 23, 2014 9:14 pm

    64. — Lakalaka brothers.

Larry Cole and Golden Richards were dynamic players for UH. Every time Golden got the ball, he could go all the way, it seemed. Same for Larry Sherrer.

  73. beans October 23, 2014 10:27 pm

Yeah Larry Sherrer. He was the high prized transfer from The Air Force Academy that caught everything. I hadn’t heard his name in years. He was exciting to watch.
#64 Lakalaka is One. Any other?

  74. 3-Prong October 23, 2014 10:56 pm

Bring back the retro unis from the 82-98 glory years.

  75. cocobean October 23, 2014 11:01 pm

beans. Dr. Larry Sherrer teamed with Bill Massey to form one of the best TB/FB combos we’ve had. The good Doc transferred from the Sooners.

  76. beans October 23, 2014 11:20 pm

I thought Larry was released from the AFA for an infraction and chose to come play for Price? Do I have my wires crossed?

  77. cocobean October 23, 2014 11:31 pm

Yeah. Price came in much later. The Doc’s last season was 1970.

  78. AdmrVT October 23, 2014 11:34 pm

Actually, I believe Larry Sherrer transferred to UH from Oklahoma. Larry Cole transferred to UH from Air Force.

  79. UHfan808 October 24, 2014 1:22 am

I asked Ben Jay awhile ago when the season first started whether he could do some kind of outreach for fans to help us understand the challenges and needs of the team and he said they were putting together a video with some media folks.

    Looks like this is it!

UH doing lots of good things with so much going on with our athletics program.

Our community has lots to be proud of! 😎

  83. wow October 24, 2014 6:17 am

It is funny what some people complain about here ….

Their day must be wake up monku, eat breakfeast monku, drive to work monku, monku than go a to meeting, monku after the meeting, monku before lunch, monku after lunch, monku driving home, monku at home … and of course monku on the warrior blog…

    monku, monku, monku

  85. A-House October 24, 2014 7:49 am

    beans:

Dr Sherrer is a dentist on Kauai.

and yes, there were a bunch of transfers from the AFA who were bounced for cheating – Larry Cole was one; was Casey Ortiz in this group?

  86. 3-Prong October 24, 2014 8:00 am

BigWave: Down years make the winning years Sweeter! Thosse were all the years with the “UH with the Rainbow” logo.

  87. A-House October 24, 2014 8:07 am

viewed most of the AKA special – no idea when it was shown on KHON – how much publicity was put into this “airing”?

very well done, IMHO!! is Kemo a UH grad? I know Carole is.

  88. truegreen October 24, 2014 8:10 am

Thanks for the link UHfan808! I saw that program air on KHON2 the other night and wished I could have a video copy of it. Loved it!

That would be a huge hire for SMU if they could get Mack Brown. That would be a tough challenge for him though.

I love the idea of the retro uniforms..but I think it is sad that we have the wear the same ones from last year, when I see other schools with all kinda different uniforms. We really are a 2nd rate school. We have a sponsor, but they cant make a new retro uniform for us. Sad. Until the university steps up its game, and get big time deals, we will continue to be a 2nd rate school. And you wonder why we are not doing well, look what the coaches have to deal with, where other schools are providing so much more for the kids.
