Three complete UH careers
Defensive end Alema Tachibana and offensive lineman Hunter Hollowed will not be returning to the Warriors in 2013, UH coach Norm Chow confirmed.
Also, Jared Leaf has requested — and received — a release from his UH scholarship.
Tachibana, who graduates on Dec. 15, said he will either pursue a career in law enforcement or seek to play at another school.
Hollowed was honored as one of the Warriors’ top scouts at this past Sunday’s luau.
Leaf is a second-year freshman who was used as fullback.

In LA Times this morning, Abe Markowitz is petition the NCAA for a medical waiver to get an extra year of elibility but Lame Kiffen said “We’re not bringing him back. We don’t have room.” He will not be on scholorship but can return as a walk-on again if his waiver is approved. Go get him Coach Chow! We can use him for one year.
I only know that “Doris person” from what I see on the board. She must have wings of sorts as her desire to help young people from the islands is simply wonderful; close to heaven sent. She continues to impress me and at this point I should not be surprised by her generous and caring spirit.
I also agree with #19. More will leave and more will come. Such is what occurs with change. If sports is a reflection of worklife, this is a terrific learning experience for these young men. When they get into the work world, especially one not “protected” by a union, when change in bosses/supervisors happens things like what they just experienced with the coaching change will happen. They can get on with the new direction, sulk and resist (or if in a union go complain to them) or leave to a place that they feel is a better work environment. Each has its risks and rewards but in life after football, it becomes financial.
Mr. Tsai, do you have any info on this years UH Men’s Volleyball team? Any good local talent?
@#24, Buffo: Agree, but a union is no “protection” if you lack the skills and aptitude. Even unions know that they need good people and are willing to let the chaff go in order to keep the wheat.

But you have to look at the big picture. He has three years left if he goes to, say, Sacramento State. If he stayed here, he’d probably be behind Joey Iosefa for another two years. He deserves a chance to play somewhere.

#22 that dude was shunned by UH out of punahou. if i recall, he only had an offer from an fcs school, didn’t sign on loi day, and eventually walked-on at usc, and was awarded for his hard work. if he gets to play another year, at usc he has a shot at the nfl. at UH no chance. why would he leave usc? it would be great if he transferred to UH, but i don’t think his appeal will get approved.
#39- considering montana, sac state and 38 other AA teams were rated above Hawaii in the Sagarin ratings, these look like pretty good options! Maybe Graves could transfer to sac as well…
All of these guys, Armstrong, Leaf, Tachibana, Hallowed were all McMackin’s recruits. They weren’t Chow’s recruits. To be honest, Mack’s recruting classes weren’t very good in 3 years. Salas, Pilares, Moniz, etc. all came in when June Jones was still head coach, which was our last good season when we went 10-3, ending 10-4 losing to Tulsa in the Hawaii Bowl. Yeah, Chow is cleaning house, but I commend him in doing what he think should be done. He is bringing his players who he thinks can play Division I football. His first class got a lot of playing time, i.e. Garcia-Williams, Phillips, Fonua, Jackson, Clarke, etc. as freshman. Some good players re-shirted to save a year and will contribute this year such as Lakalaka, Koloamatangi, Watanabe, et. Ursua, who I think is a special player is on a church mission. So I think the roster will be a lot better in Chow’s second season. He said the team needs OL, DL, DBs, and WRs. Also, a long snapper, punter. You can always need pass rushers and playmakers.
So I ask now, with the departures, how many scholarships do we have to give now?

Just my opinion, what I would like to see is Iosefa red shirting so he can learn his position.
As a running back he his average. As a power back slightly better than average but fumbles alot. He has learn to coverup the ball when he is being gang tackled. As a blocking back he is below average. Dont know if his inability to block is because he was a qb in high school or he has yet to learn Chows system. Do know that he was recruited for the R&S so he should have been a better blocker. I do hope he improves a lot for the coming season

I nominate Deputy Dog for AD, after the new AD gets the pink slip for not understanding the school, its community, the community’s goals for its programs, and for failing to accomplish these goals in a timely manner.
Based on the past, I give the new guy three years before he is shown the door. We seriously need to reevaluate the criteria we use for selecting AD’s. Seriously.
Oh and Mo wasn’t a JJ recruit. He walked on in 2009 under Mack.
Having not seen him play yet, to me, Taylor Graham is still a question mark. He was a 3 or 4 star rated recruited and he went to OSU. And Sean Schroeder was a 3 star rated QB as a recruit and we know how he played this year. So, it is difficult to gauge how players will perform. People who went to practices have said that Graham was the best QB in the program. So, I’ll take that as face value. If he is our starting QB I hope he can be like Brennan, meaning very accurate and efficient. Very accurate meaning at least 65% or better and efficient meaning at least 155% or better. If he does that I’d go on record right now that we will have a winning record and go to a bowl game.

The University of Hawaii expects to name a new athletic director Friday, a spokeswoman for the Manoa Chancellor’s office said today.
“UH Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple has met with the two UH Athletics Director finalists recommended by the A.D. Search Advisory Committee,” Diane Chang wrote in an email to the Star-Advertiser. “Chancellor Apple is in the process of performing due diligence on this very important decision. We hope to issue a media advisory with the announcement of Chancellor Apple’s selection on Friday, December 7. No press conference is planned.”
Ohio State senior associate AD Ben Jay and UC Berkeley deputy director of athletics Solomon “Solly” Fulp are the two finalists recommended by the 11-member search committee convened by Apple.

Butch Jones turns down the Colorado job in spite of a boost in salary and the CU admin’s promises to upgrade the stadium and facilities there. Interesting in that Jones has followed the path of ND’s Brian Kelly taking over the HC jobs at Central Michigan, and now Cincinnati.

My heart goes out to the guys transferring out. Albeit a normal occurrence when there is a change of coaching leadership, Hawaii is a unique place where once you become one of “us” we (the community and fans) take you like ohana and not just a player.
On the other side of things…..some of these casual fans who fault Chow for making a tough decision will also not be shamed to crucify a player that isn’t producing on a public forum. Crazy how hypocrisy can work, like a one sided mirror with no reflection.
Bottom line is as a HC you have the burden of making tough decisions in front of thousands, you’re under a microscope constantly. I wish all those men a successful and prosperous life and career, maybe they didn’t fit into what the football program is trying to do now but there are many athlete’s that didn’t fit at their previous school that have shined for us…
I hope that is what those guys take away from this situation rather than hard feelings…..
Mike Edwards and Colt Brennan come to mind in recent memory and I know there are numerous others. Hopefully they can move on and be the next Steele Jantz at their new school….

McMackin had two bowl appearances, one winning season. Warriors were 7-7 in 2008. Postseason stats count, postseason records count.
In 2009 McMackin got QB commitments from David Graves, Corey Nielsen, Cayman Shutter, and Kevin Spain. All 4 redshirted their first year. Nielsen hardly played and left the program before this season. Spain has been injured a lot and I don’t think he saw the field in real games. Shutter played sparingly in mop up duty. Graves started last year, but with the change in offensive philosophy Graves was left in the cold. Who made the QB evaluations, McMackin or Nick Rolovich? Cody Fajardo considered Hawaii but he decided on Nevada. Fajardo turned out to be very good. Did we miss?

There actually is a player who was told he probably would be a scout player in 2013. He said he wanted to stay, and keep fighting to move up the chain. So he gets to stay.
This isn’t unique. JJ and McMackin did the same things.

Speaking of potential transfers leaving our program, I would be totally shocked if David Graves decided to stick around. Yes, his game is more suited for a RNS, but Chow did not respect what he accomplished in 2011. Did David even take one snap???? I heard he was in the stands and at tailgates alot this year.
I’ve said in the past and standby the fact that if Mariotta wanted to come back to Hawaii, he wouldn’t play under Chow’s offense. Mariotta’s game is perfect for what they run in Oregon and would also be a good fit under Urban Meyer at OSU.
The only guns I wanna see on this blog is a big gun QB, homey and Mrs. A-House…
Coach Mack will always have my appreciation for the way he treated our kids in my presence. I can’t speak about anything else – I wasn’t there.
I miss the RnS. Watching today’s Redskins and their pistol plays confounding the “pro style” opponents makes me wonder even more how awesome it might have been if they built their offense around CB5 back then.

hc with history of favoring “passed over” guys from the mainland over local recruits
run first offense
lack of national tv exposure
hc who has a history of playing favorites even if it means losing the game
coaching staff lacking in star power – no Noga, or a Tanuvasa, or some other former NFL stars on staff to impart critical knowledge to recruits about what it takes to make it to the “show”
Better to be killed than to kill.
Things that help recruiting
great winning record
hc with history of good decision making
hc who clearly plays whoever he must in order to win
hc who is not afraid to make changes in midstream, to win
hc who does not play favorites, no matter what
mixed offense, no preference for pass first or run first, by more inclined to pass first, with potent running game

Costas made some really good points in that interview with O’Reilly… The fact that 40% of guns sold in the country are done without background checks is kinda staggering… I think even O’Reilly agreed with him on that…

Don’t quote me on this but I’m pretty sure NYC is one of the better big cities in terms of gun violence per capita…
Also important factors in recruiting:
1. The chance to compete and play right away if you have what it takes (talent, attitude, toughness, discipline, being coachable, drive, determination, toughness – again).
2. To be a part of a turnaround and winning program.
Just my 2 cents, but I don’t buy this “win at any cost” attitude. Too many players on previous coaching staffs who would miss practice, but still start or play that week. Is Chow a hard ass coach? Yeah, from all indications. He’s demanding and expects a lot from his players and from himself and his staff. Is Chow’s style of coaching for everyone? Probably not. Thus, they have to bring in the right type of student athlete who will thrive under such conditions, rules, and expectations.
People can disagree, if they wish.

New Arkansas HC Bret Bielema was interviewed and said that Wisconsin wouldn’t make the commitment to help retain top assistant coaches. He lost three assistants last year due to more attractive offers at other schools. Wisconsin pays its assistants around $200,000, but those who left were being offered upwards of $400,000 at other schools as assistants.

Coaching does have an impact on recruiting, but over a while a coach will need more than his or her record to bring in top talent. Eventually when recruits come to visit UHM, they will have to see the investment the university places on academics and athletics. They will see it in facilities, infrastructure support, and in the everyday occurrences on campus.
Where does UHM measure up in this instance?
I think we all know the answer.

I hate that people throw Coach Mack under the bus… He was the one that hired ROLO and Aranda and promoted them! He tried to continue what JJ had accomplished.
His recruiting wasn’t the greatest but he hired talented people that helped him win the WAC in 2010. People forget that Tyler Graunke wasn’t available for the first part of 2008 and that caused chaos in our QB situation. Then, Greg Alexander got hurt in 2009 causing chaos… Then, we won the WAC in 2010…
That being said, I really think Coach Demo is going to dramatically increase the level of talent coming in from the East Coast and South… I believe in Coach Chow and what he is doing with the program… I can’t wait till signing day in February!

Former players such as Shawn Ching, Kent Untermann, Blane Gaison, Larry Goes, Tom McCarthy, among many others, would be prime examples of positive spokesmen for the program and school itself. Many like these individuals have gone on to become successful in their chosen professions after graduating from UH.

If Manti Te’o does not win the Heisman despite the fact the Heisman Mission Statement reads as follows:

Then my opinion about the Heisman just went down, in the words of Rudy’s brother, “the Sh_ts!”. I focus on and call emphasis to the part about “excellence with integrity”. Integrity is something Manziel last saw sometime in high school, and like Haley’s comment, it is special and rare when it appears in Manziel.
Integrity is to Manzeil what surplus is to the US. If a guy who has serious integrity issues wins the Heisman over a guy whose integrity is impeccable, then the Heisman is a piece of cr_p, and it is better that Manti not get this piece of cr_p award. In fact, the statement should be revised to more accurately capture what they are looking for – persons who play football well, with integrity not an issue.

Guns, violence and football. Bringing it all together…
Is the culture more violent? Maybe, maybe not. Lots of people have cameras on them now; there are many more surveillance cameras present. News media is much more hard pressed to report the sensational in order to stay relevant and profitable. Murder is not new, goes back to Cain and Abel; our fascination with it may be.
Is football more violent? Maybe, maybe not. The players are bigger, faster and stronger. Fast-paced offenses are snapping the ball 80+ times per game. The proliferation of off-season clinics and individualized tutoring make it possible for younger bodies to be thrown into serious competition before physical maturation can occur.
Is a college education more valuable now? Maybe, maybe not. Tuitions rise each year far beyond the rate of inflation, fueled by out of control government “loans” that flood the market with ca$h. More and more economically disadvantaged families see a football scholarship as the only viable path out of poverty. In the last century that opportunity was mainly confined to one minority group. Today, there is an entirely different group who has arrived on the scene. If the Heisman is awarded one way on Saturday, there will be a huge explosion in the interest in that group…but there will still be the same number of scholarships available.

Let us also not forget Coach McMackin was instrumental in the 1999 turnaround Championship year, 2007 Championship and Sugar Bowl year, and 2010 Championship. He was a players coach and a taught our kids valuable lessons. Those who hate have no real knowledge of the inner workings and relationships between players and coaches, however like Auntie Liz said, his love and commitment to his players and their success on the field and off were evident. Some people need to move on, stop making junk up as if they are “in the know”, birdies included. Appreciate all Warriors, past, present, and future.

Agreed, no doubt about it. But the difference between genetically determined behavior and free will makes ALL the difference.
The CAPACITY for violence is present in all, but not everyone behaves violently. Violent behavior is a choice. It may be a choice greatly influenced by genetics, upbringing, present conditions, or whatever else, but it IS nevertheless a chosen, intended act. There are very, very few instances in which a person is completely incapable of controlling their own violent behavior. And that’s why we have jails.
None of this, by the way, has anything to do, pro or con, with gun ownership in my opinion.

When Spain accepted the offer, Manley’s offer….which was strictly verbal….unexpectedly became a greyshirt offer. When Manley tripped to NMSU, Mack then pulled the greyshirt offer…..so Manley had no choice other than NMSU.
Ironically Chow is the one who recommended Manley to NMSU HC DeWayne Walker (former UCLA DC same time that Chow was UCLA OC)…..since UCLA was switching from the Pro Set Offense to the Pistol Offense.

Not sure if you saw my response post from 2 days ago, but Ben Dew appears safe for now….just gotta work out some physical issues. However maybe not some other local high school OL products (recruited by the previous coaching staff) might not be safe…..judging from evaluation reviews provided by the OL Coach at their respective exit interviews.
Otherwise, mostly non-line positions being targeted……even some former one-time starters during the early half of this past season. Hopefully doesn’t also result in some unintended departures too.
This gradual de-construction process is obviously still continuing….through this off-season….’til next Fall Camp.
Not sure how and/or when the re-building process begins.

Kapakahi. The foundation has been laid. Chow will have a fair amount of returnees with valuable playing time to build on. It’s a matter of filling pukas and adding depth. Next year may not be dramtically better in the W column but I expect the team’s competive level to be better. We won’t be out of as many games by halftime as this year.
Going into Spring Camp there should be some sort depth chart unlike this year where every slot was up for grabs. Players won’t have learn Chowese to understand offensive terminology nor Kaumeyerian to understand defensive terminology. Overall play should improve with players reacting rather than thinking.
I don’t expect a finished project in two years but I hope Chow will speed up whatever time table he’s initially planned on.

While lack of playing experience was a definite factor this past season and the lack of depth at OL and DL positions remains an issue (that’ll hopefully get resolved through recruiting), JMHO that determining whether the team improves (or not) has LESS to do with the X’s and O’s and terminology/schemes/nor assignments or even personnel this next season…..and MORE to do with how much the Warriors players have bought-in (or not)…..to the coaching staff and their philosophies & methods…..to indicate to what degree the team dynamic and trust…..particularly among the offensive coaches and players…..will improve (or not)…..to motivate the players (or not)…..in order to perform to their potential (or not)…..to translate to the field for next season.
JMHO that a solid foundation can’t be laid….until the de-construction concludes…..in order to allow the re-buliding process to begin. Re-building while concurrently de-constructing usually results in a divided team….not a unified one….with inconsistent results….not steady improvements.

one, shamburger was recruited very heavily by the gibber out of hs. the burger wanted to come to hawaii, too. however, “mama knows best” and you need both parents to sign a letter of intent. (enter bobby miles)
two, he was unhappy with the direction of the sjsu bball program. when he came of age, he applied and transferred to hawaii on his own. he’s happy about his decision and so is the gibber. (exit bobby miles)
three, so we didn’t steal him from sjsu we accepted him with open arms. in practices he is the scout’s pg and he clearly displays who will be the pg next year.
if one was to observe practices this spring and fall they would not dispute the fact that graham is at least five manapua’s ahead of the rest.
every program cleans house at the end of each season.
regardless if it is a new coach, old coach, or no coach personnel move in and out of the door.
sometimes the academics just takes it toll.
sometimes the student/athlete just knows he doin’t belong and moves along.
sometimes the coach just knows he don’t belong and suggests he moves along.
sometimes an injury takes it toll and athletes “retire”.

JMHO that OL recruiting/development approach and philosophy being applied this off-season is questionable.
While Coach Chow himself publicly praised the former coaching staff several times for recruiting physically talented OL players (but just not enough of them)…..repeated stating that from Spring Ball through the beginning of the just completed season, instead some have been writen off and are now targeted for potential departure from the program (instead of being taught and developed to play to their physical potential).
While some top high school OL players (only 2 locally but mostly on mainland) are being actively recruited, a main part of this off-season OL recruiting approach apparently is to attempt to recruit the rare high-in-demand “already coached-up ready-to-play” JC OL transfers instead.
JMHO that the OL recruiting/development philosophy should be…..to focus on recruiting physically talented high school OL players to teach and develop….instead of JC OL transfers.

JMHO that this is all the undesired result of the following:
– Overtraining methods….causing unwanted loss of weight, strength, stamina, and explosiveness….resulting in listless efforts.
– Shortcomings of OL coaching….to properly teach and develop the physical talents and capabillities of the young OL players….as well as to motivate them….to play to their potential.
Kapakahi, that would be ideal, but it seems like we would be lacking bodies anyway at OL no matter which approach is taken. Let’s say we start Muir, Winchester-Makainai, Clarke, Lefotu and Milovale, which is how we ended this year. I still say Milovale is much better suited for G, but we are lacking at T.
Shigematsu had a serious knee injury and that often takes until the second season to really bounce back . But gosh this season he really struggled. That leaves Afusia, Dew, Loeffler and Lloyd. I believe Loeffler got in a couple of plays in one game that I saw and Afusia got some plays at G. I don’t think Dew or Lloyd played at all. Also Sai as RFrosh and Waa, hopefully, as a true frosh.
Think we might HAVE to go JC for a quick fix.

One thing that I wonder(ed) about is the off season training after school is out. Under Mack it seemed like the numbers sticking around to workout/train was increasing every year ala Boise.
Going in Mack’s last season I remember reading how various player groups were working out together to motivate each other. To get better physically and to build unit cohesion. I’m pretty sure it was mentioned the O line had the highest percentage of any group of guys showing up for player organized workout.
I wonder what numbers showed up this year and how many will show up next year. Leaders need to step up in Spring Ball. You know guys like Meatoga, Paredes, Pollard, Moniz….

hopefully we land a complement of juco’s and hs guys.
we also have koloamatangi who redshirted this year. and in another year gus fakava.
we look to land at least two dtackles and two dends. if dejon “mustard” allen arrives in january that’s another big body to go along with kennedy.
hopefully, we get a bead on the oliners soon.
kapakahi…the reason why we are after a few good jc lineman is that the numbers are still askew as far classes go. typically your starters are the more mature upper classmen. this was very evident this past year.
truly, every coach would love to have the luxury of just reloading each year which lends to recruiting of high schoolers. however, the current numbers are still unbalanced, thus, the jc fix should help until we can right the numbers.
apparently some whispers in the hall way is going on. there are a handful who struggled this year physically. i mean that they physically were outmanned, okay, manhandled, which led to the sacks, hurries, and lack of time for plays to develope as well. you can coach anyone up to the point of their maximum potential but once that is tapped not much else can be done.
i wouldn’t point out the oline coach just yet. you do realize he also was aided by keith uperesa who has always been highly regarded in the coaching ranks as an oline guru.
a good example is the new mexico linemen. they were big, strong, and much quicker than what we could put up as a group. it showed and anyone who was there would have picked that up after the first quarter let alone after they ran out on the field during initial warmups.
lizk…the run and shoot was a great spectators offense. women who typically don’t like football are attracted to it. why? because of two things.
one, the ball moves a lot on the field, a lot of scoring, etc. typically, defense is second to offense. its great for viewing, but, then again so is flag football. a parable is like many people get bored watching a 1-0 ten inning baseball game, but, give them a 12-11 come from behind win…
two, the game in the trenches is where the game is won or lost. but, how many people watch what’s going on? no they are too busy watching the qb. why? they don’t appreciate where the real game is being played.
three, unless you actually played or practiced you won’t know what great physical and mental effort is necesssary in the game of football. its a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. hitting and getting hit can be as violent as say your defribillator going off.
next time watch the game within the game. and if you think that football shouldn’t have violence then its not football you want to cheer for.
its like everyone put down schroeder. but, he was on his back too often and when he wasn’t he had to hurry. surely, he is no johnny unitas but he was the best we had this year.
