Sorry to hear of the passing of Pio Sagapolutele, who helped Pac-Fve win the 1985 O‘ahu Prep Bowl and started for the New England Patriots in the 1997 Super Bowl.
He also was a starting center for the Maryknoll School basketball team.
According to reports, Sagapolutele, 39, died of a brain aneurysm.

By July 1, every UH coach will be required to have a smartphone.
The intent isn’t solely to modernize the coaches.
Instead, it is a way to keep track of calls made to potential recruits. The phones, which will be paid by UH, have a device that allows a central system to track calls.
Some coaches still will keep phones for personal use, although they will have to pay for the separate plans.

Mr C: Jason did say “Oh Hi!” with a bit of a confused look on his face like, “Okay……whose dis book book couple with PLENNY kids telling me hi!”…..You’d think the “PLENNY kids” part would have clued him in…and it probably did….later on when he was driving out of the parking lot!

  37. Garret June 8, 2009 8:57 am

Bess hopes to be Miami’s punt returner again this year, and he definitely did better than Ginn last year.

Davone Bess took over for Ted Ginn Jr. early in the year returning punts and finished with a solid 11-yard average; Ginn averaged just 7.7 as Miami finished 11th in that area. Bess has said he’ll return punts again this year if asked, and he probably will be. Rookie free agent Chris Williams is another candidate for that job.

Do you forsee any serious negative impacts on the Athletic Department with the 3 day monthly furlough?
    ……………………………
    JD REPLY:

It’s still a little too early to tell right now what the impact will be for UH Athletics. While we know that the total University system was cut an additional $50 million for the next fiscal year, I don’t know how much of that cut will be directed specifically at UH Athletics.

Out of our $29.5 mill budget (per the audit report from last year), about $25 mill is self-generated, about $3 mill is provided by the University and tuition support, and the remaining $1.5 mill is provided through state general funds. I don’t know if only the state general funds will be restricted or if there will be additional restrictions.

Over the next couple of weeks, most of this will likely be determined, and once we know what the exact impact is, we can start making plans and adjustments.

“I was talking to Colt earlier, and he said you guys went shark diving, how was that?

It was great. I’ve got the video. I’ve got to bring it. So maybe I’ll leak it to you guys. It was great. I hung out with Colt down in Hawaii, you know, he’s the man out there. Everybody was like, ‘Who is this little guy you’re hanging with?’ Colt was like, ‘Awwww, this is my buddy!’ The shark diving was a great experience, though.

He get treated like a rock star out there?

Man, he the man out there. Me and Cooley was talking about that. I mean, he’s the man, assuredly. I think the things he did for Hawaii, putting Hawaii on the map, was great.

That’s what it’s like for you in Miami?

Noooo, people don’t notice me in Miami, man, I’m competing with too many people to be famous in Miami. And up here I’m competing with Obama. ”

    A-House,

Heck yes the Mrs and I plan on being there… we are even looking to learn the real mahjong ‘rules’ so we can betta… Need anything from me?

Sorry no posts lately, did the Route 66 road trip thing from San Diego to Dallas (1,700 miles) and back via I-20/10/8 (1,400 miles) for vacation.

Now back at work. I can barely see over the pile of work it’s so deep. Back to the grind…

    Cheers, SB

Oh… Must be new sizes for Jock straps..nevermind…

  122. A-House June 8, 2009 12:29 pm

    Sailor Blue:

that’s a long ways to drive – 3,400 hundred miles – at least the retun trip was Interstate all the way.

ah, Route 66 – took the “old route 66” after my discharge at Fort Knox in ’68 and drove to LA and then to Oakland to ship my car home.

very memorable and easy drive – hear now that most is “freeway” (I-40 and I-44).

looking forward to starting up the mahjon games again – me, I just get to get lucky!

  125. Garret June 8, 2009 12:42 pm

The Japan Times has a feature story on the trip that JD and Mac took to Japan. Great photo and article about their efforts…this can only be good for UH! If players from Japan walk on to UH, that would be great because UH won’t be putting any money out and if the player succeeds he would get a scholarship and UH would get a lot of publicity in Japan.

“This year, we’ve got an Australian kid and a Samoan kid, best athlete in Samoa,” McMackin said.

“And later on, we’ll get a Japanese kid and a Western Samoan kid. That’s going to be one-third of our recruiting. In five years, we will get a pretty good team. And that’s the beauty of Hawaii. It’s multicultural over there.”

Japanese players who won McMackin’s favor wouldn’t even try out for the team, according to Donovan. Instead, the veteran coach would encourage them to walk on.

“If they do very, very well, then eventually they can earn scholarships,” said Donovan, a former All-WAC offensive lineman at UH.

  126. Garret June 8, 2009 12:44 pm

JD is really working to expand UH’s bridges to Japan…and Japan might actually have good baseball, basketball, or softball players that could contribute right away (possibly even more suited for US sports than football).

The University of Hawaii is planning to hold a similar clinic, this time for basketball, sometime during the summer.

“We are also hopeful that we can get a few athletes in our other sports — maybe baseball, softball, volleyball and/or men’s and women’s basketball.”

  127. Garret June 8, 2009 12:45 pm

Article about BYU’s Junior Day mentions a local recruit.

The 2010 recruiting class already includes 12 verbal commitments. Other notables include the No. 7 nationally ranked guard, four-star recruit Graham Rowley from Waialua High School in Hawaii

  128. Garret June 8, 2009 12:45 pm

Back to work…almost done with everything needed for my deadlines tomorrow. I cannot wait until 5pm tomorrow when I can finally relax!

Oh wait.. that’s not a lyric. That’s an autobiography!

  134. A-House June 8, 2009 1:02 pm

    Garret:

I would think that men and womens volleyball would be a “natural” for UH recruiting – they have some very good players – same with baseball in the Far East and possibly Southeast Asia.

Hope UH can send the coaches for men/women VB, softball, and baseball to the July clinic. They should have started plans when they returned so the Japanese media can get the word out so coaches and players from all over Japan can attend.

  135. Curt June 8, 2009 1:03 pm

    Al,

So did you spend lots of $ at the store on Saturday? Sorry I couldn’t speak to you. I was in the middle of buying a tv. Hope you’re doing well.

  136. A-House June 8, 2009 1:07 pm

    Garret:

I did not know that Graham Rowley was that highly rated.

This must be a jolt to all the “Red Division” guards from the private schools and Kahuku, Waianae, etc.

Wonder if UH has a chance since his DE class/team mate already made a verbal commitment to BYU.

I must have missed it, but how many commitments did UH receive from their Jr Day? Did UH offer anyone?

  137. madeinhawaii June 8, 2009 1:10 pm

    A-house,

It has been 7-days a week through last season too with partial days on weekends mostly.

My REAL NEW work schedule starting July 1st is just Mon-Fri 8:30-4:30 with rotational Saturdays half day (9am-1pm) and I get my holidays back (Federal only, not state, banks operate on state holidays).

This is MUCH better. Better than my old Mon-Fri 9am to 7pm. Saturday AND Sunday between the hours of 8am-4pm. Including ALL holidays.

I tell ya, that is no way to live.

    COLT WATCH!

    http://tinyurl.com/m96l7r

It’s safe to say the defense is ahead of the offense at this point of the offseason.

On a pair of 2-minute drives, the Redskins’ first-team offense could not score against the first-team defense.

“We would have loved to put it in [the end zone], but I was also glad we could keep it out,” Zorn said. “A head coach has mixed emotions when you’re in the 2-minute drill.”

The only score of the extended practice session came from the third-team offense, with Colt Brennan completing a pass to a well-covered Marko Mitchell in the end zone for a touchdown.

  149. Curt June 8, 2009 1:32 pm

    To all UH coaches,

If UH issues you all BlackBerry Storms, “Hawaii Five O” off VZW’s V-Cast download does not sound good as a ringtone. It’s not loud enough and sounds like a tape recorder.

    ====

I used to have the same ringtone as Coach Mack, Nash, and Coolen, but had to change it to a standard ring when I got my Storm.

  172. chawan_cut June 8, 2009 2:31 pm

    Mr. C
will try. depends on the size of it that’ll determine quality and cost.
imagine it as a tv or pc screen. lego are like the little pixels in the resolution.
they’re called “mosaics”. the smaller the “mosaic” of lego, the less detailed you can be. the larger, the more detailed, but more expensive with more pieces.
In the link below there’s examples of the lego mosaics,(I only made the UH stuff). My friend made the Obama, and the other 2 are ones I found on the net.
8-bit nes video games like mario, zelda, etc make easy transitions to lego as its the same type of pixel like drawing. detailed images (like colt) need to be bigger or it won’t look good.
there’s software to convert the images to pixel/lego like quality so don’t think i’m some master artisan by making them. it tells you what pieces you need and what order to put them.

    http://picasaweb.google.com/chawancut/LegoMosaics#

will talk to you more when i get back probably.

  176. Kazz June 8, 2009 2:35 pm

I have a feeling the phones will be off the VZW network. Just by the amount of VZW banners and ads at UH games and such.

Depending on heavy usage of the various applications, it would be easier to have the BlackBerry Curve. My phone, the Storm, is a good phone, but I think the touchscreen limits what the phone of it’s power could actually be capable of.

I still love my phone, but when using Word and cutting and pasting documents, it’s not as easy as it should be.

Making calls, sending text messages (media or plain text), watching videos, music, downloading, and checking e-mail is great, but using Word or Excel off my phone is cumbersome.

I saw this on Tombo’s twitter feed: UH apparently is in talks to schedule South Alabama. They do not have a team today, but they apparently will start a D-IAA team and then in 4 years they will move to D-IA!

For example, the aim of the program is to be a NCAA-sanctioned, FBS team just four years after its first season.

Jones said Sunday the school is talking to Hawaii about scheduling games, where former Alabama teammate Peter Kim lives and is assisting in the negotiations. That would be quite a road trip for the Jags and a pretty good game to mention during recruiting visits. Jones said the school is also talking with Notre Dame, Florida and Arkansas about future games. He said talks with Notre Dame had taken place previously, but broken off, only to be revived.

  229. d1島 June 8, 2009 4:47 pm

Discussion about how Pisa will have to earn his starting job. The current starter is in the last year of his contract, so the winner of that starting spot will get a nice contract after the season…which gives HUGE motivation for both players!

I was happy to see both Vaughn McClure of the Tribune and Brad Biggs of the Sun-Times report that Nick Roach remained with the first team during last week’s OTAs. Just like with Frank Omiyale, Tinoisamoa will not simply be given the job, he’ll have to earn it. Even before the Bears added Tinoisamoa, strong-side linebacker was shaping up to be the best positional battle of training camp. Expect the competition this summer to be fierce.

And don’t write off Roach, who by all accounts has put together an impressive off-season.

Of course, Tinoisamoa was an outstanding player in St. Louis, who put up big numbers for the Rams’ defense. Also thrown into the mix is the fact that both players are looking to secure long-term contracts after this season. Bottom line, this appears to be the perfect storm for competition, and it should be a good one.

I knew the the white pants unveiled earlier in the year was an omen… (plus Coach Mack said last year Under Armour would make green jerseys for us in 2009 and this is UH football’s 100 year anniversary)

Personally I would relegate the black jerseys and black pants as our “3rd uniform” for special games and just use the new green jerseys and white pants as our permanent home colors… Heck, we already wear green and white on the road, just in reverse.

Article about Colt’s love for Hawaii.

But the Hawaii love for Colt extends beyond the island and into our area. When Colt first moved here a year ago the Hawaii alumni association was throwing a luau and invited him to come along. Since he didn’t know anyone here, he figured why not go be among the people who love him the most.

“Colt is such a big phenomena in Hawaii that if we got him to one of our events we could have a huge event and we did,” explained Karen Uemoto, President of the Hawaii alumni association in DC. “He got up there and played the ukulele and sang with us like we do in Hawaii.”

He may not have been born on the island, but these days it’s hard to get him off of it.

“It almost feels like its family in a weird, weird way,” Brennan said. “And it’s something they pride themselves in. They say ‘ohana’ and that’s a big thing to them. And that’s exactly how I feel when I go back there.”

  256. Garret June 8, 2009 7:30 pm

Not only did Bess do better than Ginn in punt returns, he also did better for kick returns last year.

Kickoff returns have to be better as Ginn averaged 20.5 yards on 32 returns and Bess 22.2 yards on 14. Ginn’s willingness to run out of bounds to avoid contact proved costly on many occasions.

  257. Garret June 8, 2009 7:31 pm

Great to hear that RGM is doing well.

Veterans continue to lead the way as Paris Jackson and Ryan Grice-Mullen are in mid-camp form snagging passes all over the field. On the defensive side of the ball, both Dante Marsh and Korey Banks have been aggressive and effective in the secondary.

The afternoon session featured impressive catches from Geroy Simon as well as Grice-Mullen once again with Korey Banks picking up his first interception of training camp for the boys in black.

  258. Garret June 8, 2009 7:33 pm

We know that RGM was in Chicago’s camp last year and might have had a shot to make their team if he was healthy…so the Bears having a scout watching RGM practice could be significant. Bess has done well at Miami and I’m sure he has been telling them all about RGM, which could make the Miami scout at RGM’s practice interesting.

Interested: Scouts from the NFL’s Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears were in attendance on Monday.

  259. Garret June 8, 2009 7:34 pm

So sad to hear about big Pio Sagapolutele one more of the “Pride of Kalihi,” from Kalihi Valley gym to Maryknoll to San Diego State to the NFL (Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots – Super Bowl starter – Pio was big in stature (6’6 305) but even bigger heart, he was a humble giant, never forgot where he came from, God bless his family in Hawaii and his wife and four young kids left behind.

Good to see Nu’u Fa’aola, another proud product of Kalihi, a former Governor and Rainbow Warrior, then to the NFL (Jets, Dolphins).

The way they plan to test this out seems strange to me–they want to give 1,000 elementary school kids GPS-equipped phones and have their locations recorded every minute of the day and stored on a central server. I seriously doubt that Americans would like the location every minute of the day stored on a central server…

    letsgowarriors,

Yes, Miami signed NMSU’s Chris Williams as an undrafted free agent. He’s trying to make their roster, and one way for him to do that would be to win a job as a returner. However, reports seem to indicate that Bess has the edge for the punt return job and either Bess or Ginn will be the top kick returner.

I didn’t realize that Utah State decided to only play Utah *or* BYU each year, leaving a hole in Utah’s 2010 schedule.

Utah wants a home and away series with a BCS conference member for 2010-2011. This hole was formed when Utah State decided that at this point in its program it would be better to only play one of Utah or BYU each year, not both.

The open question is whether a BCS conference member will agree to a home and away or if Utah will be willing to agree to a one and done for those years next year when the urgency is higher.

  288. Garret June 8, 2009 11:47 pm

Article analyzing whether or not the WAC has benefited from the BCS.

Boise State’s victory, coupled with Mountain West member Utah’s runaway over Alabama in the recent Sugar Bowl, has done much for the non-BCS leagues.

“That game came at a time when the WAC, and other leagues, were looking for credibility,” said Western Athletic Conference Commissioner Karl Benson. “That one night in Glendale helped recognize the WAC as a credible and viable conference.

“I believe we have proven since then that we have added to the value of the BCS. We have been a valuable member of the BCS.”

“There’s no question the new structure will benefit us in the future and has already benefited us,” said Benson. “Sure, there is the possibility that we could have a team finish at No. 13 and be left out of the BCS. And, we’d still love to have an automatic bid.

“But, the new deal with the BCS is better for us. It has increased our revenue by about 40 percent.”

Right now, the new deal gives the non-BCS schools about nine percent of the BCS revenue. If a non-BCS school plays in a BCS bowl, like they have the last three years, it rises to about 18 percent.

  289. al ™ June 8, 2009 11:47 pm

    Godspeed greg.
believe in the miracle that is the Lord.

  290. Garret June 8, 2009 11:49 pm

Karl Benson sure seems happy with the current BCS system. I like the idea of having the top 10 teams become the teams that play in the BCS bowls, since that would allow for the possibility of multiple teams from non-BCS conferences.

Benson expects continued discussion of the BCS structure over the next four years, before the agreement will be renegotiated.

He’s heard a wide variety of changes being talked about, including an idea that would eliminate all automatic bids. Under that plan, the top 10 teams in the BCS rankings would be placed in the four BCS bowls and the BCS Championship Game.

“I just don’t know,” said Benson. “We have a lot of time to think about it and work on it.

“The current structure has provided a tremendous opportunity for the WAC. We believe there is still plenty of opportunity to tweak the structure some more before we renegotiate.”

with the UH summer fb camp coming up this month I hope the coaching staff will be able to get a few commitments from the HS for 2010…early commitments will help establish the ties with the local athletes and the high schools in the belief that UH is a place they can go and still be able to garner nfl scrutiny..the staff is recruiting early, now its time the fb players make a decision to stay home…not everyone can be recruited and offered a scholarship but for those being offered a decision has to be made sooner than later.

Why do parents feel it their duty to bail out kids who are failing? The kids are failing because they chose not to do anything or very little in class.

I wonder what the parents will do when the kids go to college and flunk out or are fired.
