Think you can be a Warrior?

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
We’ve heard all of your stories.
But if you really want to show you can be a Warrior, call the UH football office (956-6508) and register for next Thursday’s walk-on tryouts.
You’ll be tested in the 40, and measured. Hey, we’ll even list your “in-cleats” height.
Tryouts begin at 4 p.m.

* * *

The Warriors’ first team meeting is set for tomorrow.
Coach Mack will go over the offseason schedule.
Offseason training begins Monday.

* * *

Kainoa LaCount will have to wait until the summer to join the UH football team, according to people in the know.

* * *

Besides watching the battle between UH and third-ranked Pepperdine, another reason to attend tonight’s volleyball match is to hear Chris Rawson, the best heckler in years. He doesn’t yell insults. Instead, in a booming — and irritating — voice he tries to have a “conversation” with an opposing player who is preparing to serve. It’s sort of like having an editor stand behind you while you’re trying to write. Oh, never mind …
The USC and Penn State players actually praised his innovative passive/annoyance technique.
Rawson must be effective. After the first match, the NFA — no-fun administrator — complained to an arena staffer, and Rawson was told he could only sit in his ticketed seat. The solution? For the next night’s match, he got two tickets — one for each end line.

    Aloha Tsai-ko’s
Windy on the NorthShore but not too bad. I hope this thing passes without too much pilikea.
Anyhoo, great article about Tadd Fujikawa in the HA. Good luck to him and all the Hawaii golfers.
This morn on the Rob and Russ program, Miano threw a name out as a possible 2 or 1st team guy, who is going to be attending the Warrior workout. Any more info on this possible future Warrior?

    Off-season training?
Geezes almighty…last year they said the same and the entire OL reported to summer camp in terrible shape. Most struggled to run 40 yard sprints. You know the rest–59 sacks, penalties galore and the discipline of an Armenian Army unit.

Will be interesting to see what JUCO recruits were attrited–usually takes our admissions 2 years to Q these guyz. Not sure if we are recruiting dummies or if UH admissions is still giving priority to foreign students over minority football players from the inner cities and polynesia.
God Bless upper campus civil service slugs–they truly are handicapped.

  63. Manoa January 15, 2009 10:11 am

The problems with qualifying have been in the JC transcripts which are (a) notoriously bad– in a few cases they are almost illegible, and (b) notoriously slow to come out. JC administrators are also notoriously slow to respond questions. The athletes are told to get on their schools, but even that hasn’t made much of a difference. Once the transcripts are in, the process at our end can start and they have speeded that up– not instantaneous, but they check everything and make sure the courses match our requirements and so on, so it still takes time.

off season workouts….it is a matter of choice.
these players are making a choice. a choice of wanting it more or not.

as our recruiting develops, the mere fact that the competition amongst teammates for playing time is developed by the reality that you know that someone is just waiting to take your place, therefore, you need to be in top form.

perhaps, some of the returning players should take a trek to boise, idaho and just see how hard they work to perfect their craft.

    …nuff said

  102. whitey January 15, 2009 11:31 am

j(j) excellent idea and the weather is in their favor now as it is cool rather than hot like the summer. no need run at the beginning, but at least make an attempt to jog half mile. to break the monotony of half mile jogging, they can run/jog 220 yds, then walk 220 yds, run/jog 220, and walk 220. the walk part of the 220 can be 3 times slower than the run part and eventually, they can work their way to going a mile.

al, that’s just the point, it should not be by choice, but mandatory to get their mindset into producing players. this should be a culling period or evaluation to see if you deserve to have your fb scholie renewed. can always give it to another who is more deserving. no need for “primo donkeys”.

  112. al ™ January 15, 2009 11:43 am

    can we sustain a tradition.

it takes everyone involved with the football program. coaches, administrators, student/athletes, maintenance workers, custodians, and fans to support the tradition 100%.

if you are a part of this tradition, live it, work it, breathe it, and be it. this cannot be a part time attitude.

  113. al ™ January 15, 2009 11:44 am

    dpk…..are you ready???

  114. whitey January 15, 2009 11:45 am

Do the football scholarships cover summer school also?? The players can take a class or two that will lessen the class load during the season and will have housing available to them instead of them paying to live off campus.

these are high school or just finished recruits who want to be warriors. same scenerio, when you want to be a marine. you have a choice of how to become a marine? hell no, you have mandatory training before you can even be called a marine. same thing should apply for the warriors, you can’t be a warrior until you fulfill your mandatory obligations. so what if we dress only 30 warriors for the game, the fans know that they are warriors and will perform like warriors. imagine that you want to be a warrior leader on the same level as a navy seal or army delta team, then you got to do extra to earn that respect. sometimes, we make too many excuses for them and instead of warriors, we have nothing.

JMHO but good to hear that Coach Mack has decided to continue practice of conducting an open walk-on tryout prior to Spring Practice instead of just limit to selected “invited” walk-ons.

While the walk-on yield from these tryouts hasn’t been high in numbers, they still have yielded some quality Warrior players…like RB Daniel Libre, DB Richard Torres, DB Guyton Galdeira, DL Reynolds Fruen…to name a few.

  139. Jason January 15, 2009 12:37 pm

BTW, if you can’t take advantage of this as a student at UH, then you’re crazy. From today’s Ka Leo:

University of Hawai‘i students wearing their Mānoa Maniacs T-shirt will receive a free VIP USA Koa Ānuenue theme pack at the men’s volleyball matches on Thursday and Friday against No. 3 Pepperdine, the women’s basketball game against Nevada on Saturday and the men’s basketball game against San Jose State on Saturday.

The VIP USA Koa Ānuenue theme packs contain over $4,000 in savings from various merchants throughout Hawai‘i. The books retail for $25 each. One coupon book per student.

IDK what coupons that book has, but considering all of those games are free except the men’s basketball game, that seems like a no-brainer to me.

I have no clue about their football cleats and according to some players that felt “off” in them I do hope it will all work out.

Speaking of cleats, I happened to take a first hand look at some off the UA cleats they had at Sports Authority and those buggas seems stiff as hell. Now I have no idea what to look for in a cleat, but for example, the ones our lineman use seem pretty narrow in the sole.

  191. homey ℞ January 15, 2009 2:22 pm

I’m not a big fan of the 220’s.

I’d like to see more emphasis placed on explosive and dynamic moves. Only because training for 220’s will not help you in the sense of building fast twitch muscles and may hamper those that strive to put on weight.

Gotta train like those in the strong man competition. Do more agility drills. Sprints. Plyometrics. Power lifts. Work out like you are preparing for a combine.

Need to get quicker and faster on the field. Only way to do it is get quicker and faster at practice.

You’re not gonna chase down someone like how you run in a 220, you’re gonna chase them down like how you run in the 40.

Sure you’ll build endurance preparing for 220’s but you’ll also build endurance and your body will learn recover in a shorter time by doing the other routine. On the average you’ll get at least 20 seconds rest between snaps of the ball.

    I’m hungry again.

    homey,

    point well made.

the 5-10-5 shuffle is a great drill for testing side to side agility, also, most timekeepers take down the 20 and 40 yd times. plyometrics combined with a Crossfit Training program will further develop the major muscle groups, like the gluteus maximus for power.

kind of like the jimmy the greek theory for what he got canned for, ask pride about the theory.

    speed + strength + power

homey, don’t know your friend, but can check around. your suggestion is super. i watched part of the stongman show and they interviewed one of the “charles atlas” guy and he said that there was quite of a bit to qualify. Not only size, but you made to do minimum strength things, had to be able to walk w/weights (don’t know how much), etc. they don’t just let anyone get into the sport unless they can meet the minimum qualification. imagine if coach mc and the rest of the coaches set minimum standards for fb skills per position along with the academic standards. also got to get the strength and training coordinators to spend more time correcting the hammy problems. it is uncalled for to have that many on a team.

it seems that we do need to upgrade our workout regime in principle as it appears that we are so focused on upper body strength. we seem to have neglected the core strength training which to me is more important.

as a long time youth coach, i preferred to focus on core training and leg strength/stamina more than biceps, etc. repetitions like long toss and daily throwing routines are enough to develop arm strength. afterall, all athletic motions are started and ended with core strength.

    okay, back to the gym.

  208. Bulla January 15, 2009 2:44 pm

    al,

you are 100% right, as usual. power base is what you need to look at. you don’t walk on your hands…..but it takes a lot of work, hard work and pure determination to develop the core and lower body.

like i used to tell the beast when he was training…..’if you don’t blow, don’t go’, and we’re not talking bubbles.

the mere fact that you have to literally tear the muscle fibers in your body so that they will recover and become even more ‘dense’, seems like an oxymoron….but you don’t build up when you’re lifting, you build up when you’re resting and recovering from your workouts.

racquetball is a great sport for increasing your agility. ask coach chris brown and former RB john kauka……they used to play me 2 on 1 in the racquetball court…….sad to see those young bucks tapping out, haha, but it was fun……

JIMHO two words “win sprints” team up with eight players each team, 4 on the goal line and 4 on the 40, first guy all out sprints to tag his partner then repeat till all eight on the team runs two sprints. Held three times a practice once in the beginning, once in the middle and one in the end. Team that wins gets to go to the showers, the rest hit the laps at least two. Some used to call them gassers because by the time you end the last one your outta gas.

They should all have insoles/outter soles that helps those whose walking/running gait either pronate or supernate. The UA athletic shoes I’ve seen to date does not compare with Nike/Swoosh as some have mentioned – developed over a very long period with great ‘shoe last’, and materials designed for supporting our wide feet. Used to wear out 3-4 pairs a year running, now running shoes used for walking last a good year before materials and sweat breaksdown insole etc. A good Swoosh running shoes also great for trail running up Manoa/Tantlus. I believe UA ‘lite wt.’ shoes will eventually be good but needs lots of improvement before I can say equal to or exceeds their Swoosh competitor. Am looking toward that day when I will be proud owner of UA pair before I can’t walk/run anymore.
Thanks for your info and look forward to hearing if you buy pair when new models are out and your evaluation.
Suggestion on training- couple of laps up Kilauea Ave starting from 18th Ave to DH and back to 18th and back up again or as the BB team run up da mauka hill at Kaimuki along with al’s 220’s.

  297. Kazz January 15, 2009 7:19 pm

    702,

    Uphill??? Nah no thanks. 😆

But seriously I understand that UA has a LONG way to go as they are just developing their shoes right now, but if these running shoes can compete with the Nikes and the New Balances of the world then they will be on the right track.

Although they may have already started out on the wrong foot because the suggested retail price for these shoes are 90.00-110.00+… not exactly competitive prices right there…

Are we down to 7 days and counting? Many inquiring minds are chomping at the bit to know.

Let’s see, 2 weeks from 1/8/09 = 1/22/09. OK, gang set your clocks, but wait, ST did not say what time in 2 weeks the BIG SURPRISE THAT WILL SWEEP YOU OFF YOUR FEET will be announced and, he did not say who will make the announcement; or, did he?

    Kazz,
Agree, priced not attractive. that’s why I prefer to get shoes thats been around to meet my needs rather than buying new models to be their guinea pig. Ok, I had to learn that lession from my earlier Nike’s, New Balance before finding tried and true running shoes. Comfort rather than looks.
Tsaiko’s be safe tomorrow in windy conditions.

    Al –

No worries….A-House’s sharing info with me couldn’t have been a big deal, much less something that “swept me off my feet.” Honestly, I don’t remember what he told me. A lot of nonsense comes my way everyday…I don’t pay too much attention to him. BTW, don’t hesitate to doubt the veracity of his posts…after all…a “Stephen Tsai” he is not.

  308. Ralph January 15, 2009 7:46 pm

I didn’t realize that one local player has already committed to Wyoming and another recruit is visiting this weekend. UH cannot take all the Hawaii recruits, so I’m happy whenever local players (that UH doesn’t offer) get scholarship offers from other schools.

    2009 VERBAL COMMITMENTS

TRENDT MARSOM (6-0, 195), safety, Kaimuki High School in Honolulu, Hawaii

Among the other reported visits are …

Jordan Robinson (6-4, 205) from Baldwin High School in Wailuku, Hawaii

  358. Garret January 15, 2009 10:01 pm

Coach Cav was a big loss for UH, just like losing Mac after his first season as DC was a big loss. But the BCS schools offered way more money…and the disparity in assistant coach salaries is even worse now!

This article gives some of the numbers for Tennessee’s new assistants. They aren’t the highest paid at their positions, as Tennessee doesn’t have nearly the biggest budget for BCS schools…but things are crazy!

    Some tidbits from the article:

Their new DC makes $1 million per year!

Their Defensive Line coach makes $600k per year! I think that is more than some WAC head coaches!

Their strength and conditioning coach makes $190k per year.

  359. Garret January 15, 2009 10:03 pm

Miami is searching through the CFL to find some talented players…that is interesting because there are several Warriors playing in the CFL. This is a smart thing for Parcells to do because there is a lot of talent in the CFL who seem to be overlooked by the NFL.

This summer Bill Parcells assigned a couple of Dolphins scouts to scour the CFL for talent.

“Find me a guy that can do something special,” Parcells told his scouts.

I think that it is pretty cool that four student’s from New Jersey’s High Tech High had a paper published in a math journal. Hehe, I read through the first part of their truncated paper … then I got bored. But it’s good work, they earned that scholarship money. The prelude to a good marriage is a successful courtship and engagement. This isn’t hard to understand. Any breaches on either side and the marriage is off…no, ands, ifs and or buts. Any thought of infidelity, second thoughts, cold feet or apprehension then the wedding is off. Plain and simple. And this is the same tenement that I wish our football coach would follow in regards to recruiting, for I think it is blasphemous for recruits to pledge and promise a commitment to the UH and then be looking and taking recruiting trips to other colleges. It’s just not right, in my opinion.

In fact I would have the utmost respect for a coach that closed the book on the recruits that did this. Same thing with recruits that have already made commitments elsewhere I wouldn’t want anything to do with them.

It speaks volumes for a coach that does things on moral principals without any regard to the win column. Or kowtow to these type of recruits.

When Hawaii got a head start in recruiting it filled specific needs that the team needed filling-DE, LB, CB etc. With each verbal commitment came a promise that should be sacred. And the coaches counted on the player’s word. And probably, in some cases, passing up on other viable recruits because they thought their needs were filled. You see how the team can be in a bind, now, when what they thought ,at one, time was an oasis might turn out to be a mirage, especially if all these recruits looking elsewhere do skip town. And this may certainly hurt the team. But there’s a silver lining if the coach expresses to the team a life lesson from all of this. And makes changes in his philosophy of recruiting in the coming years.

What I would do if I were Coach Mack is this. Simply gather his team. And let them know that they are the first on his future recruiting philosophy . Tell the players that he is setting a new precedence in how he is dealing with the future recruits, especially the ones who were verbal committed and are looking elsewhere. Tell them it’s insulting, shameful and it hurts when they promise and then flip flop. And draw the players in closer, so that they latch onto every word. And look into their eyes and tell them there are life lessons to be followed, similarly how a man and women make pledges in the preludes to marriage is in the same light he’s going to hold future recruits-any breach of the promise and it’s over…no, ands, ifs, or buts. Look elsewhere after making a pledge, don’t come back here should be the new mantra.. Yes it has to be harsh…there are so many good kids to covet on his team…and other recruits who’s words are sacred.

By doing this, and this is the silver lining, it not only teaches the kids a lesson it also spreads a deep esprit de corp within the team. And this can snowball with every step that the coach does that is morally right. And this is what the team might hungers for and craves for..

  386. Stephen Tsai January 15, 2009 11:45 pm

I would say it’s not a good idea to renege on a pledge.
But then again, many of UH’s players did that: Vince Manuwai, Lui Fuga, Adam Leonard, Davone Bess, etc.

  387. Stephen Tsai January 15, 2009 11:46 pm

  388. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER January 15, 2009 11:54 pm

roysan16- Two of our best players- Colt and Davone- made the most of their opportunities to excel after they experienced something in their lives that showed them where they did NOT want to be. I will always admire Coach Jones for recognizing their qualities and giving them a chance.

Coach Mack, I believe, will also make the most of the cream that rises from this new crop of recruits. I am praying that the Warriors will find a level of unity that will give them consistence and determination… and the wins.

    whoosh!

Until the recruit signs the LOI, they are still dating! Papa Mac and Staff must continue to court these guys all the way until they get to the signing. Maybe we need to send a Miss Hawaii with a Lei to each school on signing day to keep Hawaii on their minds. For many of these guys Hawaii is as far away from home as they will travel. Bye-bye Mom…Bye-bye GF…bye-bye to the world I have known for 17 or 18 years. Aloha Hawaii…aloha new people…aloha strange food. I never realize the difficulty until I was living on the Mainland and a buddy said, “How does it feel to be the Haole?” Maybe we can get The Adveriser to do a mock Front Page for each one with the Headline, “Aloha Myles! Welcome to the ohana.” Have a bunch of fans write Letters to the Editor inside telling them how much we appreciate their signing with the Warriors and how much we will support them.
Gotta go all out to convince these youngsters they are making the right choice.
“Hawaii…more than football, more than an education…an adventure for life!”

I dont see LaCount being in football shape after after a two year layoff. He last played in 2007, sat out 2008 and at best wont rejoin the team until summer camp.

    REM Amani Purcell?
Same deal…it hurt his progress as would anyone that stays out that period of time, including athletes returning from church missions.
Its more than clearing dust off the mantel or re-oiling the machinery…it will take a year…at least.
