UH will reinstate Graunke

Quarterback Tyler Graunke will be reinstated to the team, head coach Greg McMackin said today.
He had been withheld from team activities since Aug. 4 because of “academic issues.”
He resolved those issues this past weekend, according to his father, Jeff Graunke.
Because Graunke must undergo medical examinations and attend NCAA-mandated orientation sessions, he will not travel to Florida for the Aug. 30 season opener.
McMackin said he will take only three quarterbacks — Brent Rausch, Greg Alexander and Inoke Funaki.
“I’m happy for Tyler,” McMackin said. “He’s taken care of things, and will be able to play. … (But) I wish he would have been eligible (for the first practice) Aug. 4, when the rest of the 104 athletes were.”

The Warriors held their first — and only — scrimmage of the preseason today at Aloha Stadium. To simulate game conditions, they piped in amplified “crowd” noise. The Warriors also unveiled their new ha‘a. On the down note, running back David Farmer suffered an apparent knee injury. He will undergo an MRI tonight.

One of the players told me that he felt the 2006 offense was the best in UH history. Statistically, it was the most pass-efficient offense in NCAA history. The key pass-catch figures were Colt Brennan, Davone Bess, Ryan Grice-Mullins, Jason Rivers, Ross Dickerson, Chad Mock and Ian Sample. The running backs were Nate Ilaoa and Reagan Mauia. The starting offensive linemen were Tala Esera, Hercules Satele, Samson Satele, John Estes and Dane Uperesa.
I imagine it could be argued the 2006 Warriors were the best overall. The defensive ends were Melila Purcell III and Ikaika Alama-Francis. Leonard Peters and Jacob Patek were the safeties. There was so much depth at linebacker that a healthy Blaze Soares was limited to a handful of snaps against Oregon State.
And Marissa Bonilla was a student manager.
Any thoughts?

Happy birthday to Ralph.

Because of Robbie Dingeman’s article in today’s paper, I am discarding all re-used plastic water bottles.

Carcinogenic chemicals leach into the water, so never re-use them.

Look on the bottom of the bottle. If there is a 1 or a 7 in a triangle, toss the bottle.

2 in a trinagle is okay.

“For coaches, players and fans alike, the Carolina game is going to be as close to a regular season game as can be in the preseason. ”

If we see Colt on Saturday… well… it will have great implications.

  66. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 21, 2008 7:04 am

This is what I’m lookin for- teammate views about Colt.

Murf interviews my 2nd fave “Skin- Chris Cooley:

    http://www.homermcfanboy.com/

Be honest, did you guys want to be here tonight?

“It’s hard to prepare yourself when you know you’re only going to play one quarter,” Cooley said. “You know, we didn’t gameplan the Jets – at least, as far as the players go. We practiced against our defense all week and we didn’t practice against the 3-4 look offensively. I know our defense didn’t prepare very much for them. Like I said, you know you’re only going to play a quarter. You know when a quarter ends you’re going out, so it’s hard to get in a mental state to get fired up to play hard.”

So what are you guys hoping to accomplish during that one quarter?

“I think our biggest goal is to just do what we want to do and to have a great drive,” Cooley said. “We did put one nice drive together and move it down the field. We had a penalty there that moved us back in the redzone and we didn’t score a touchdown, but I think we felt confident that we put a good drive together with our first team.”

Well, an ugly win is still a win. Talk to me about that ending.

“It was exciting. I was happy that we could have such a successful two minutes, and it’s fun to see Colt [Brennan] throw the ball,” Cooley said. “Even the guys on the sidelines are excited to watch Colt pass. I was surprised that they didn’t just go for the touchdown. I was surprised that they went in to tie it up in a preseason game. It’s different that they went for the overtime shot. I thought that they could get two plays at the endzone, but that’s them. We had a good time though. It was exciting and we had everyone up on their feet.”

You mentioned Colt Brennan. What do you see from the kid?

“Colt has a lot of confidence,” Cooley said. “Colt said to me on the sideline ‘As soon as I go in, I’m going for it.’ He wants to throw the ball down field. He’ll make smart plays, but he also wants to throw the ball down field. I think it’s good for a young quarterback to have that confidence.”

  67. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER August 21, 2008 7:07 am

702WarriorNation- high five! Sugar Bowl was really fun- surrounded by Tsai-kos! I have lots of work to do before I leave next Tuesday So I’m not even thinking about the game yet- except for practicing my typing on the iPhone.
Do hope to blog some color about the atmosphere in the game- and am now thinking about water proofing options!
Hiya to your lovely wife too!

So, most likely with the short roster count on travel, Blaze will forfeit his offer of going to make room for an active player?

  73. Maverick August 21, 2008 7:25 am

  78. gigi-hawaii © August 21, 2008 8:12 am

ST, what you say about the 2006 team being the best team might be true. And the 2006 schedule was better than 2007. But, hey, we went undefeated last year, and there is no denying the euphoria.

  79. gibu August 21, 2008 8:12 am

    Good morning ST and tsaikos.

I think 2006 had the best roster talentwise. I think it would have had the season to remember if we had McMackin as the dc though.

  80. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2008 8:13 am

Well, Stretch, I’m going to have to pull a Koakane tonight. I guess my kids decided to read the pamphlets, and apparently people with diabetes aren’t supposed to consume alcohol. Anyway, they told me to mention it publicly so that if anybody sees me drinking that they have to “rip it out of me.”
    Ouch.
Then again, if I don’t drink, maybe I won’t inadvertently bid $15,000 for JJ’s motorcycle.

  81. gigi-hawaii © August 21, 2008 8:15 am

ST, I have never seen you with a beer. At the parties I attended, I saw you holding a diet pepsi.

  82. madeinhawaii August 21, 2008 8:17 am

    Gibu,

I have to agree with you on that. 2006 was the best collection of talent for any one season at UH. As good as Glanville was for UH, defensively, McMackin’s coaching style may have been a better fit with the defense less prone to injuries.

Of course we’ll never know. But, the next few seasons look very promising as well. We shall see, eh? We shall see.

I’m excited for 2008 and onward!

  83. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2008 8:17 am

You are getting sleepy … sleepy …

Come to think of it, if we had coach mac and we went undefeated in 06, we wouldn’t have seen the hook and ladder and famous statue of liberty plays when boise upset oklahoma. it would have been hawaii upsetting the sooners 😛

  90. tom mui August 21, 2008 8:31 am

    Aloha Gang:

I mailed out the following this AM to Dr. McClain with a copy to Ms Lendio, the UH’s attorney:

    Dear Dr. McClain:

I have read with great interest the letter protesting the above-bid submitted by RMY Construction, Inc. submitted by the attorneys for CO-HA Builders, Inc.

I do not represent any construction company. I am probably typical of a UH football supporter and alumni.

My analysis of the matter is probably the same, I would hope, of that of Ms. Darolyn Lendio and her staff of attorneys.

    1. RMY Construction has an AC contractors’ license. It may perform any class of work except that which requires a specialty license.

    2. No specialty license is required for the installation of synthetic turf as there is no such license listed in the law.

    3. While the Contractors license board may have decided informally to adopt such rule for the installation of synthetic turf, by requiring a specialty license, none has been approved by the governor and the director which is required by Section 444-4 of the Hawaii Revised Laws.

    4. The Licensing Board though its Executive Officer has been quoted that the proposed rule was “informal” and “nonbinding” and was only a “guideline” for state agencies. To become a Rule which would have the force and effect of law, the Board must comply with Section 91-3 HRS. This has not been done

    5. The purpose of adopting or amending the rules is for the protection of the general public and not for the purpose of eliminating competition.

    6. While CO-HA Builders cite the case of Okada v. Board of Water Supply, 97 Haw. 450 et seq., the case is not applicable, for unlike Okada, no specialty license is required for installation of synthetic turf.

    7. Point II of CO-HA Builder’s objection was that RMY failed to list a licensed specialty subcontractor. But there is no such thing as a legal specialty license. CO-HA points out that Sports Turf Hawaii will be doing the “real” work and claims that Sports Turf Hawaii does not possess any contractors’ license. An examination of Exhibit “D” of CO-HA’s submission clearly shows that Logan Hamocon has a general (contractors) license and that Sports Turf Hawaii is a trade name.

    8. Interestingly, even though Okada may not have had the specialty license complained of, the Court did not allow the contract awarded to Okada be cancelled as it would “not be in the best interest of the public”.

    9. In the Okada decision, the Court in footnote 3, quoted Section 103D-302(b) HRS where compliance in naming all the joint contractors or subs was not complied with, “bids … may be accepted if acceptance is in the best interest of the State…”

There should be no doubt that the best interest of the State would be best served by the immediate authorization of the turf on the Cooke-Ching Field. The interest in the University of Hawaii’s football team has been amply demonstrated and the field is a pressing need recognized by the Governor and the Legislature and even by the University’s own administration who has taken the position of getting the facilities fixed as a high priority.

    Very truly yours,

    Thomas L. Mui

If any Tsaikos can, drop a line to the UH and let them know how you feel.

    Happy Birthday Ralph!

The 2006 team was AWESOME! One of my favorites! Watched the ’06 Fresno St game a couple of weeks ago.

Hope everyone has fun at the Pigskin Pigout!

  96. Manoa August 21, 2008 8:43 am

Statistically, the offense was just about ideal for the running game in the run and shoot. Nate was running at a 7.6 yards per carry clip (June’s at least 7 yards per carry benchmark), and I believe we scored over 25% of our TD’s by running.

If you can average over 7 yards running and score one fourth of your TD’s running (we also met June’s standard on 1st downs rushing), June pointed out that the defense cannot ignore the run.

Koakane is OFF the wagon so I guess you are drinking tonight!!

  103. Maverick August 21, 2008 8:57 am

Couldn’t agree more about the ’06 team. They had balance on both side of the ball, with a running game and a defense that could smack around any opponent. They were multi-dimensional,as the opponents didn’t know what to expect.
One theory though, If the defense played Glanville’s scheme under Coach McMackin, would they give that extra little bit of oomph for effort. It has been in print that many of the D guys couldn’t relate to Glanville’s personality, and that can come out as negative output. But that 3-4 defense is brutal for any College level team and takes a special athlete on the line, such as Ikaika Francis & Mel Purcell to cover the larger area.

  104. Garret August 21, 2008 8:58 am

  105. Maverick August 21, 2008 8:58 am

And yes, HAPPY B-DAY Ralph. You fall on the same day as my brother. Leo’s rise to the occasion.

    Good morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

    Tom Mui, bhf2,

Excellent work by our top notch Tsaiko Lawyers, glad we have you on board. Amazing talents populate this blog.

    Tsai-Meister,

I would have to agree that the 06 offense was the best ever. The games they’d lost, they beat themselves, but I think this years defense will be better and will keep us in all games we play. Won loss record will be determined by how fast the O will come around.

The 06 offense, combined with the 08 defense, would have gone undefeated in 06, imho.

  110. Garret August 21, 2008 9:05 am

BSU picked their starting QB. Their top 2 QBs are a senior and a freshman and they chose the freshman as their starter. Sounds like UH will be dealing with this QB for the next 4 years.

Chris Petersen ended months of speculation Wednesday, announcing that redshirt freshman Kellen Moore will start at quarterback for the Boise State Broncos to open the season against Idaho State on Aug. 30.

Moore battled senior Bush Hamdan for the starting role through the spring and fall camps.

Petersen thinks Moore may be farther along than any freshman in the program’s history. He will become the first freshman to ever start the opening game of a season for BSU. Hendricks started the eighth game his freshman year.

“He’s different certainly than any of the young guys I’ve seen, as far as how far ahead mentally he is in the scheme of things,” Petersen said. “I can’t wait to watch him play. I think he has a tremendous feel for the game. It’s nice.

Moore set just about every passing record in Washington high school football history. He led Prosser High School to a 12-1 record as a senior, racking up 4,269 passing yards to go with 67 touchdowns and only seven interceptions.

“He’s one of those guys who gets the ball out in a hurry,” Petersen said. “He can feel that rush and the ball comes out when he’s being rushed. He uses his backs and his check downs really well. He’s got a little bit of Brett Favre in him when he’s trying to fire something and you’re like ‘whoa, where did that come from?’ Brett Favre will get those in there and he will too.”

Florida update: They are NOT practicing today.

The University of Florida football team gets a rare day off today after practicing twice on Wednesday.

Florida is now in the mode of preparing for the season opener against Hawaii which is now just nine days away.

The Gators are still looking for someone to step up at one of the defensive tackle positions; Lawrence Marsh should start at the nose but the other tackle position is still up for grabs. In fact, the Gators will probably employ a 3-3-5 alignment at times as well depending on down and distance.

  113. Garret August 21, 2008 9:08 am

Feature on UH in the Idaho Statesman.

“The defense is going to be the face of the team, and rightfully so,” said senior linebacker Solomon Elimimian, the WAC preseason Defensive Player of the Year. “We have to step up on defense.”

McMackin likes the talent on this defense so much that he compared it to the Miami defenses he coached in 1993-94 – defenses that were ranked No. 1 in the nation.

“If this group isn’t close to that one,” he said, “then I haven’t seen one.”

The 2007 defense was superior to the 2006 defense with more effective schemes and game day D play calling by Mack. Mack put it all together. The 2007 offense was almost the equal to 2006 because Colt was more effective despite an inexperienced line. and all of the WR’s were healthy. The sum total is that the 2007 team was superior to 2006 and the record and team statistics bear this out.

  136. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2008 9:44 am

By the way that commentary from “Stephen” in the editorial blog was written by Stephen Downes. I’m not exactly sure what he does other than he’s a Damien grad and that his brother Patrick is Frank DeLima’s joke writer.

We have a guy who has my first name at work. He works the inside desk, and whenever we don’t publish the name of the third-string water polo goalie then we get angry calls from the goalie’s parents. One day a parent got abusive, and namesake yelled, told him to come on down, then he said his name was Steve.
And, so, I’m wondering, why is a third-string goalie’s dad trying to pick a fight with me.

Mauk’s lawsuit seems to have prompted the NCAA to review his appeal for a 6th year…despite already rejecting his request twice and terming their last rejection their “final rejection”.

There’s still a chance that Ben Mauk will be the starting quarterback for the University of Cincinnati this fall.

The NCAA agreed on Wednesday to re-hear Mauk’s appeal for a sixth year to complete his four years of eligibility.

Mauk passed for 3,121 yards and a school-record 31 touchdowns last year in leading UC to a 10-3 record.

  152. Garret August 21, 2008 10:03 am

This writer thinks that Fresno State is overrated.

I went back at looked at Fresno’s last five years and found that while there are some historically powerful teams on past schedules, there are few wins against good teams and very little to show for such a solid rep. Since 2003, Fresno State’s biggest win came over 9-4 Boise State in 2005—a conference foe. When they step outside of the WAC, the Bulldogs’ biggest win was over an 8-5 Oregon State squad.

This begs the question: why do they have such a solid rep from ESPN and the mainstream media? Well, they did beat 1-10 Washington in 2004, a Kansas State team that won four and five games in 2004 and 2007, respectively, and they have bowl wins against a 6-7 UCLA team in 2003 and a 7-6 Georgia Tech team in 2007. Not exactly murderer’s row.

Look, I am not anti-Fresno—frankly I am rather apathetic towards them—but this rep that they will play any one at any time apparently comes from playing once-dominate programs when said schools were bad and, in some cases, downright dreadful.

It seems to me that – much like Charlie Weis and Notre Dame – Pat Hill and Fresno State have earned their respect by losing in a tight game to USC—which says a lot about the Trojans, I suppose. While Hawaii and Boise State schedule cream puffs and wind up in BCS games, the Bulldogs play in the late-December Diamond Nut bowl which nobody’s watching.

You know what might save the defense? A favorable schedule: depending on what you think of Florida State, Tennessee could be the only true road test. However, we wouldn’t rule out teams like Hawaii and South Carolina coming into the Swamp and pushing the Gators due to UF’s inability to stop the pass.

I work at home all day and there are times when people are making a LOT of noise–neighbor’s kids, grounds people at the park behind our house, etc. However, it never bothers me…my office environments were even noisier places with the coworkers and students talking all the time. Lots of time I was one of those at the office that were talking story too, so it is probably quieter now since I’m home by myself most of the time during the work day.

Article about the South Florida Sun-Sentinel guy whose blog I post a lot of news about Bess/Samson/Reagan here.

As deadlines get earlier, travel and space budgets get slashed, and teams get more secretive, the problem only gets worse. We have more access to readers before — we have let them storm the gates (through comments at the bottoms of stories and blogs). And we are operating in more platforms. For instance, I do radio, TV, a blog, etc. Yet we have less access to teams, to get the information that makes us experts. So my fear is that we know less, and yet we are asked to provide more. That’s a troubling combination.

    yawn.
too much olympics this morning. good thing i didn’t know about the soccer game.

so ajoe, a family member knows your family after all. (ummm, doesn’t everyone in ka’u know each other?)

    2006 vs 2007? hmmmm.

06 had the most nfl talent of any class in uh history.
07 had many great players and did cause the most “rise” in all of us because of its march to the sugar bowl.
06 had a great offense, probably the best ever.
07 had a great defense and had it not been for a turnover prone offense would have given up the least amount of points in the past decade.
like others have mentioned, 06 was straw that stirred the cocktail.
07 solidified the legacy that was created by 06.
its a toss up. every season has its great moments and significance.

now, enter the mack era! this is going to be just an amazing ride.

“Burn Notice” is Dan Kelly’s favorite show.
    It stars Gabrielle Anwar.
Remember her from “Scent of a Woman” dance scene?
Anyway, she also starred in the movie, “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken,” as a recent blind woman who rides diving horses at carnivals. There’s a scene where she trains by jumping from a platform onto the moving horse. Well, when my daughters were young, they wanted to be her character. So they’d stand on the couch, and their dad — that’s me — had to crawl on all fours while they jumped on.
    But I digress.

    Al:
I remember during the 2005 season when Colt thought the offense was starting to click. Colt, Davone and Ilaoa were very confident. They also were largely ignored. Back then, nobody asked for their autographs. I remember you could talk to Colt for a half hour after practices and nobody was around. Sure was different at the end of last seaosn.

The Olympic sprinter Bolt has made Texas Tech’s coach think about recruiting in Jamaica.

“I got to be honest, I’ve been thinking about recruiting Jamaica since I saw that stuff,” Leach told hosts Andrew Siciliano and Krystal Fernandez. “I’ve been to Jamaica and let me tell you something … here’s the extent that I’ve thought about that subject, there’s approximately 2.8 million people in Jamaica, which is approximately the size of the state of Iowa or Kansas, or the city of Houston.

Georgia Southern opens the season at Georgia, which is of course expected to a blowout. Now Georgia Southern just suspended 8 players…the game will be ugly.

Georgia Southern football coach Chris Hatcher announced Wednesday a one-game suspension for five Eagles and a two-game benching for three others to begin the 2008 season because of unspecified violations of institutional rules.

“Depth was already going to be a problem this season,” Hatcher said. “All the guys we’re losing were good players.”

In October 2005, Wena arranged for Colt and Graunke to visit a school fair. It was the day after a game, but they were great, signing autographs and playing basketball with the kids.
The next year, Colt, Davone and Grice-Mullins showed up. You’re not allowed to advertise, so they showed up unannounced. Again, not a very big gathering.
Then last year, the folks asked: Hey, where’s Colt?
We had to say that you had him for two years and nobody was excited.

I hope da’ Warriors do a Buster Douglas on Florida State and punch them in the mouth before they realize the season started. Frankly, I think that’s the only chance we got – to get them down early and hope like heck they don’t get up again. And please, keep Tim Tebow off the field. Even if it is just so I don’t have to hear the announcers hyping him.

Somebody always gets shocked in their first game of the season. Heck, it’s happened to us (was it Appalachian State?). Now it’s our turn to shock the world.

Can you tell I’m getting fired up?

  181. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2008 10:34 am

I think people should beat the Christmas rush and get Brent Rausch’s autograph now.
That way on Dec. 22, we won’t have people we haven’t talked to in years asking us to get him to autograph three footballs.

Burn Notice is great, but somebody needs to buy Gabrielle Anwar a meal. I’m waiting for the final season of the Shield to start.

In any case, Big Bro needs to get off the couch because he has a department meeting at school in an hour and a half.

BTW, I’ve been informed that my reporting skills were lacking this week. Let the official record show that Wena and Brenda were at Heather Mack’s clinic. (I told Wena that she can’t be a Tsaikette if she’s already a Tsai…)

Bobby C. should bid on JJ’s bike. Guy gets free use of a Harley and he picks a Sportster?

u.s. stranded too many runners. also, can you spell U-E-N-O. she’s the pitcher who had pitched the previous two-three games in a row. all guts that girl.

i think japan was more hungry for the win. u.s. looked flat.

it was that samurai mentality, typical of japanese nationals and old school way of thinking in their culture.

  195. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2008 10:52 am

Well, Wena gave up her football manual from the clinic, so I guess it goes into Sunday’s giveaway pile.

  196. Maverick August 21, 2008 10:53 am

My thoughts still wander adding Tyler to that mix, and thinking that would be the ultimate dream for any coach/team.

As a parent, I feel bad for all the fans that are slamming him for what happened. In a way, it’s very selfish on their part, but the team did lose out too.
I can’t imagine what his parents are going through, since football is such a talent for him, and seems that’s what brought him to Hawaii. I mentioned before, I wish him the best to finish what he starts with getting his degree.

Your post 179. Agreed. I hope that Rausch and company can rack up a few more wins than they did in ’05.

  203. 2left August 21, 2008 11:06 am

The 2006 team had the most talent and was the best ever –except in the W-L column. I think the difference is that Colt and the WRs learned how to win in 2006, and applied that in 2007. The last incompletion at Alabama and the last bounced pass against OSU — those are completions in 2007. Now, whether the 2007 team would have had the talent to be in the position to win those games is another question . . .

  204. A-House August 21, 2008 11:08 am

Many special “kudos” to BHF2 for spearheading the “legal” effort to get the Cooke Field turf installed and to Tom Mui for his excellent letter to McClain. It beats back every point made by “you-know-whos” attorney who, apparently, did not do the research done by our 2 legal-beagles to point out what is fact. Learned a long time ago that “footnotes” in most, if not all, cases, is where you find the miniscule info to defeat future challenges.

BTW, BHF2, see you in 8 days at the Golden Corral!!!!!!!!!!!

And, to Ralph, “Happy B-day” and many more to come!!!!!!

  206. Rob14 August 21, 2008 11:30 am

Our family definitely found Colt approachable…always…but especially in ’05 when no one was noticing his electric personality. He parked near our tailgate and was always smiling and gracious with the kids. We knew that he was a winner then and knew the program was headed for big things starting with him. It’s not always that easy to find a team leader with all the right traits, but luckily we had him for three years.

Rausch should be given the same chance. The team has to face “real” opponents and be under the lights to more fairly evaluate them. I always feel that is when we see the chemistry start to develop.

    Go Warriors!

  207. Nail August 21, 2008 11:32 am

2006 hands down….Just too bad we couldn’t combine years of players like…

    Klemn, Samson, Noa, Vince, Hunter

I thought it strange somebody from Hawaii said he was looking for to the licking that we are going to get from the Gators. That was his estimate, not mine. I am hopeful for a close hard fought game, but am worried about our offense’s ability to perform without having game experience as a unit.

Get plenty resistance on the pedals, tiring me out easily.

    Al,

Great comments about being patient with Brent Rausch. I remember the boos Timmy Chang received and also the fans chanting for Colt when Tyler Graunke was struggling. Sometimes, we show no patience and no class. My guess is that it might take a little while before the offense gets in sync. Hopefully sooner than later.

Am I on the Honored guest list too? nah, I gots to pay the bill!!

  238. madeinhawaii August 21, 2008 1:20 pm

    DPK, al,

A few of the big differences between the 2005 team and 2008 are that we have a capable back up in Inoke, as well as a JC tested/proven backup in Alexander. We also have an improved defense package with depth in all the key positions.

The defense should be able to contain most of the Warrior opponents to keep Hawaii in the game and present the offense with a number opportunities in each game to win.

Offensively, we have a new qb and receiver corps but the plays are pretty much the same, maybe simplified with a few new wrinkles, but proven effective when executed properly.

If the gators stick to the Georgia plan of blitzing, then Hawaii needs to nickle and dime them for first downs and make them pay. Quick short pattern plays which all three quarterbacks should be proficient at. The real questions will be if the receiving corps can catch without intimidation and get some yards after each catch and if the O-line can open holes big enough for the ground game to explode off the line.

All in all, I expect the Warriors to do an outstanding job in the WAC. I just wish Florida was at the end of the season.

i remember the year timmy got booed, i ran into his dad levi, and we spoke of it. his dad would have a tear in his eye. poor timmy, the guy who could have gone to many a big time program out of st. louis, but chose to live out his dream of being a warrior, was subjected to the lolo’s who call themselves local boys.

but, my hats off to both timmy and levi (who by the way was part of the officiating crew at every home game) because they took it like real men and like men of strong character did not lower themselves to the lolo’s level.

drove from kapalua to wailuku on the back side!
i went from kahului thru wailuku to kahakuloa bay last week on a mission to see a client but you what. yikes. kind of a hairy but scenic route wasn’t it?

yep, scenic indeed and the classic coast scenery, everyone should see it granted once will do. 🙂

was afraid we’d miss our flight had we backtracked to Kapalua, Kaanapali, Lahaina, etc.. so we took a chance and kept going around and its not THAT bad a ride. roughly 10 miles, single lane, and more curvy than Hana, but the road surface not bad.

Kahakuloa Bay is beautiful and no wonder people live there, our 3rd person wanted to stop for pictures.

  252. Curt August 21, 2008 1:33 pm

    madeinhawaii,

From my recollection when I attended the Sugar Bowl, Georgia actually did not seem too blitz much. They appeared so successful with their base defense that there was no need to blitz. If you recall, it was their defensive ends that were busting through all night. We tried to run shovel passes and screens but none of it worked. So Georgia dropped 7 players back to cover the four receivers. It really was difficult because I think Colt was looking to throw down field (like he’s doing now with the Redskins) but it was hard to find an open receiver with the defensive ends zeroing in on him.

The Warrior Football Kickoff Rally scheduled for noon, Friday, August 22, in Tamarind Park at Bishop Square in Downtown Honolulu has been cancelled.

University of Hawai`i football players were previously scheduled to attend but UH received an NCAA ruling that their participation was prohibited since the event was to be held at a commercial property.

  266. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 1:49 pm

At Florida the most important thing for the Warriors, especially early in the game, is the avoidance of turn-overs at all costs. If not, it could be deadly.

The defense will certainly surprise the heck out of them, they have no real respect for our players and think themselves far superior. If we can keep it close by halftime, our offense will gain confidence and our D will be more and more fired up.

If this plays out as hoped, the Gators might just get nervous enough to make some mistakes on their own. They have a lot of young freshmen players starting and I don’t care if they are 5-stars, experience matters.

We have new players, granted, but they have experience and maturity. So, avoid turn-overs and we have a legitimate shot for the victory. What they don’t know is that we have quite a bit of speed ourselves this year. Man, I can’t wait !!!!!!

  274. madeinhawaii August 21, 2008 2:03 pm

    Curt,

Hopefully the Warriors have studied Georgia’s tape over and over again and then several time more to correct the deficiency that allowed them to be bulldozed like that. Cause if the O-line can’t keep the ball for more then 4 downs, the D-line won’t be able to keep up their intensity through the 4th quarter.

    FloridaTed,

I agree. Avoid those turnovers. But they really will have to get those first downs. They need to exercise patience and avoid the costly mistakes in the first half.

I wonder though. When the Warriors beat the Gators, will they say that Florida had a bad day and give a million Fay excuses or will they boost Hawaii’s stock and give credit where it’s due?

I hope that the offense can count to 2. The snap count needs to be changed up once in a while to keep the linemen and ends off balance. Even during practice now, it is still always on one.

  282. homey ⑤ August 21, 2008 2:09 pm

MIH – I think for the o-line it comes down to technique. The o-line has the physical and mental abilities but if you don’t have your technique down then anyone can blow by you.

Apu Kalamansingh – why is it offensive?

  286. (Jesse) James August 21, 2008 2:12 pm

ST – I guess you didn’t ask permission from Wena to give away that book….tsk tsk tsk…I’m ashamed of you….MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

MIH/Curt – I agree with the O-line assessment for the UGA game. I do think though that we were already at a disadvantage when we were in the shotgun during 90 percent of the game. That allowed the DEs to line up a little farther outside. With our Tackles not being able to move back quick enough to cut off the speed rush from the outside, it was a long day. Being in the shotgun allowed UGA to be very agressive since they knew the pass was coming the entire day.

If they have Rausch line up under center and actually run the ball a few time to keep the D honest, it may take away some of the rushing capabilities of the FLA D….

Just some thoughts, although I do agree with both of your assessments…..

  295. BigWave96744 August 21, 2008 2:24 pm

SportsHawaii’s Kapakahi just called me from Cali.

USC is currently running their intra-squad scrimmage.
I think it’s probably in the 4th quarter.
There’s around 12,000 folks in attendence.
$6 for a cup of soda
Band plays fight song after every 1st down or score.
Small kine fight errupted on the sideline right before half time.
    Abe Markowitz is wearing #50

I wonder if Barry is up there.

  296. homey ⑤ August 21, 2008 2:24 pm

Stretch – ahhh, so that’s where the Kalamansi fruit comes from.

  297. (Jesse) James August 21, 2008 2:25 pm

J-Dog…I agree that TG would have been the starter had he taken care of business….but like Stretch said, woulda, coulda, shoulda…..he didn’t do it and I think, even if he were able to get back, he’s lost the respect of his team for basically failing them…..as well as himself….

homey …agree with the technique issue. After discussing it with a couple of Tsaikos who have a lot of pride in Warrior Football, it seems like the O-line, at least what I was able to witness, wasn’t low and centered enough in their stances….which is a key to O-line. Also, when dropping back to pass block, they seem to drop back in a wide stance which slows their back-peddle…sort of like waddling – i.e. walking backwards with feet shoulder width apart….if they dropped back more like how a DB drops back and than set themselves for the pass protection it might help with the speed rush from the outside….

    But again, that’s just my opinion…and I’m not a coach sooooo….

  298. Curt August 21, 2008 2:26 pm

    Florida Ted,

You’re right; avoid those turnovers early and keep it close. If we can do that, the offense should be gaining confidence with each series. And by the second half, the offense might be able to pull it out. If you remember the Alabama opener a few years ago, we started out slow. In the second, Colt was getting into a rhythm but we ran out of time. Almost pulled that one off.

Las Vegas has Florida +35 over Hawaii.

Florida will look to attack Hawaii’s defense with big plays. Deep throws, misdirection plays, and quick runs. Big plays equals big scores for Florida, and Las Vegas seems to agree.

Ok, we need 1 more player to join our fantasy football league. We can take up to 3 more total, but it needs to be 1 or 3 so we have an even number. The draft will be this Sunday, August 24, at 5pm Hawaii/8pm Pacific time. If you want to be a part of this fun league, which will have a small prize for the winner email me at djmitcho at yahoo dot com and I will send you the invite.

Wasn’t Florida’s passing game kind of suspect? It will be an untested routine for them and if McMackin has any say, he will make sure than any Gator receiver who touches a ball down field will know the sound of and impending doom and the meaning of the word …

    “fear”

I would love to see Mouton get a reception for a touchdown.

  335. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 3:03 pm

As far as the SB is concerned, while watching the game twice again later, I didn’t see a single, meaningful adjustment made by the O-Line. Sure, we can blame the players, but JJ stood on the sidelines with his arms folded like he was in a daze. It didn’t look at all as if he was in the game.

Then look at the difference with McMackin, he made adjustments and the D held their own very well against the big bad SEC, despite a ton of turnovers by our O. Without our D they could have easily scored 60 + on us. Take away our turn overs and they don’t score 24 points.

This is what gives me the most hope and our D will be even better. We showed in the SB that our personnel is as good as theirs. I don’t think Florida will score more than 28 points. So it’s all up to our new offense. Look back and watch the SB again, you’ll see what I mean.

  336. da princess' classmate August 21, 2008 3:05 pm

Fla’s passing game is okay, maybe a little weakenend by the loss of CI and the lingering pain to P Harvin. they’re probably not too worried, just get da ball into one of their 10.0 100 meter dash guyz (rainey??)

almost doesn’t seem fair that an offensive genuis like urban has those types of toys to play with. we have to play fast but also disciplined. kinda dredding seeing us lose contain when they run one of those end around/reverses.

kinda makes me wonder who will a wet surface help?

If the Warriors are going to battle for another WAC title, they’re going to have to do it from the inside out. Hawaii may have lost a lot of recognizable names, but they return what is possibly the best front seven on defense and three-fifths of an offensive line that was the braun behind the gaudy stats.

  365. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 4:28 pm

Florida giving 35 now? Man, easiest bet ever, no way they beat us by 35.

I also think that some of their speed is a bit of SEC hype. In the SB, half the snaps they seemed off-sides to me, plus they knew our counts, another thing that was never adjusted.

Mrs. A-House, watch the game anyway, it’s water under the bridge, but if you watch for the things I’ve mentioned earlier, it actually gives you real hope for the swamp battle.

Pauoa Boy: No, no and no. And if I do want that kind of stuff (which I can’t even afford), it usually comes from my own hard work. I like having some independence.

  367. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 4:33 pm

So today at work while working on one of our helicopters, I had my rookie check the cockpit to ensure everything was safe to perform weapons checks. After 5 minutes or so have gone by, I ask WTF are you doing? What’s taking you so long? He responds with, “Something’s wrong with the seat, there’s no lever to pull so the pilot can eject” Needless to say we are working on a helicopter…so to mess with him I say, really well you better hurry up and find it…so after another ten minutes or so I ask if he found it yet. He reply’s nope I’m still looking, so my other guys are laughing hysterically and tell him, hey dipchit I didn’t know helicopters had ejection seats! D’oh talk about pulling a gigi 🙂

  368. bb August 21, 2008 4:33 pm

  369. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 4:34 pm

Also, in the SB, our players seemed a little overwhelmed by the atmosphere, but they won’t be overwhelmed by the swamp. The SB was a great Feuertaufe.

  370. Hawaiianbod August 21, 2008 4:34 pm

NYUH – according to a little birde th J-E-T-S did not cut LP. Leaving was his choice. Things happened.

    Aloha Ted-
Hope all is good on your end.
Yep, that 35 pt. spread is way too generous. Don’t know what there thinking, but I’ll take it and start picking some paper bills off the money tree to lay on the line.
Our Warriors are out to win, and I believe it.

  372. Maverick August 21, 2008 4:37 pm

So the Redskins play the Bears later in the season. Imagine if Colt were playing and Leonard Peters is on the field at the same time. He has been showing some great blitzing skills in last weeks game. You know where I’m going this….

  373. oldie August 21, 2008 4:37 pm

    Florida Ted,

Good analysis of the Sugar Bowl and upcoming Florida game.

I think you’re right. If our defense can hold them as we think they should, it will all depend on how well our offense does.

How did Rausch look today and the O overall? An info morsel would be most welcome.

  378. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 4:42 pm

    BIG RUNNING BACKS

Dayumit…so if Big Jake is out and now Farmer is out, who will be our big back for the season? I know Libre and LWJ can handle the running load but would like to see a big back helping block for Brent. Hmmm…wonder if Laupepa would play some Big Back, didn’t he have a stint in the backfield…or will there be another converted lineman…how about big Quentin Beaver?

  379. Ata August 21, 2008 4:44 pm

I agree, the 2006 Warrior football team had a better offense. That’s cuz we could run the ball and shovel pass better.

  380. Maverick August 21, 2008 4:45 pm

Peters made a big boo-boo on that last score. Owie

  381. Jason August 21, 2008 4:47 pm

Pauoa Boy: If I have my way, Pepa will be the starting left tackle.

  382. Maverick August 21, 2008 4:48 pm

    WHAAAA?
    Now Farmer is out ?
He has the blocking skills down pat, and can run the ball consistently well. Who will fill that void for FB?

  383. Hawaiianbod August 21, 2008 4:52 pm

FlaTed – your observations re the SB are right on the money:
    1) jj’s *dazed* look
    2) UGA DE’s being constantly offsides
    3) The players being overwhelmed. jj should’ve at least had a walk-through in the dome.

  384. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 4:55 pm

    Hi, Maverick,

Everything’s as good as can be expected and you?

    Hi, Oldie,

I don’t know why, but I have this strong confidence. The Gators actually believe that their back-ups can beat us. They won’t say it openly, but certain statements give them away, like we want to play as many players as we can or we would like the starters out as soon as possible, etc. Some of their players actually said that.

I’ve watched the Gators very closely and I tell you, Big Mack will have a nice surprise package ready for them.

SEC is 30% hype, just look at their game against Michigan. They can be beat and we are a better team overall than last year.

    EIGHT MORE DAYS !!!

  385. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 5:00 pm

I think 2006 offense was better because we had a better OFFENSIVE LINE! With Tala Esera, Hercules Satele, Samson Satele, John Estes, Dane Uperesa… they made the offense go. If this OLine was still together going up against Georgia I think the outcome would have been different. Plus Colt had more game experienced receivers and running backs that year Davone, Ryan, JRivers, Sample, Mock, Dickerson, Bain, JFerguson, Ilaoa, Mauia, Maneafaiga to name a few…

  386. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 5:02 pm

    Hi, Hawaiianbod,

Well, we all know now what happened. The SMU-Hawaii conflict totally distracted him, on top of that, the players had found out that he was leaving, which added more fuel to the problem. All year I had never seen the offense so unprepared.

Oh, well, my hard feelings are long gone and I think in the long run we got the better end of the stick.

  387. Jon August 21, 2008 5:03 pm

Big Back is a key position, ESPECIALLY in the Swamp! For the life of me I can’t figure out why June didn’t have a plan to have a second back in the backfield to help with the pass pro during the Sugar Bowl. One less slot and max protect so they could at least function! Grrrrrr ok let it go.

Anyway, I like the ideas of a converted lineman. Someone that can pop guys coming into the backfield. Nate and Reagan were awesome at that.

  388. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 5:03 pm

Jason – No doubt I’d rather see Pepa starting at one of the Tackle Spots myself… But again would also love seeing him run over a few guys… Like I said though Quentin Beaver would be a LOAD to bring down… Oh well, hopefully Farmer is only a sprain or something minor…

  389. Maverick August 21, 2008 5:05 pm

It be a beautiful day on Aug. 3O th after our Warriors win in Florida.
Plus lets add a few more ingrediants to the Beef Stew.

Utah beats Michigan that same day,
    and Appalachian St. beats LSU.

Imagine the fun all the sportscasters will have on the game recaps.

  390. Manoa August 21, 2008 5:05 pm

If you want to see what the offense looks like, look at tapes of last year’s Portland State games– the early games with the QB under center. You will see what the running plays look like and the presnap motion which we used when JJ first got here. Later games have the QB in the shotgun. They are on You Tube. It won’t be identical, but it will give you a good idea.

  391. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 5:08 pm

Jon – We’ve been spoiled over the years with some really good Big Backs…Wade Keli’ikipi and Nate Ilaoa are probably my two faves…Reagan Mauia was a beast and just layed people out…wonder who’s going to step in…I’d choose Quentin Beaver 6’1″ 350 lbs…try tackling that…

  392. MeiLing August 21, 2008 5:10 pm

    BHF2 & tommui,

Mahalo nui loa for reviewing the facts and presenting the information to the parties responsible for resolving the Ching Field turf installation. Tom, is there anyway to get the letter you composed to the meeting tomorrow?

Back to da house stuffs. Esme & out…. whoosh …

  393. Jeremy August 21, 2008 5:11 pm

    Stephen,

How did the QBs do in the scrimmage today? Especially Rausch.

  394. Ralph August 21, 2008 5:12 pm

Florida Ted regarding post 336: what adjustments were you expecting on the o line…Georgia rushed three and put pressure on CB, with more DB coverage and were very successful. Their 4 man front killed our o line without blitzing. Some called for wider sets on the line, imho the Georgia defense shoots the gap, same result, CB is hurried and buried. JJ always looks sullen, on the field, off the field, doing interviews, same face..better running game, i wish, but with Pilares,Libre and Farmer, no such expectation. UH had to pass to win and CB needed more time to go thru his progression and find his receivers, never happened…imho some of you got to accept that Georgia kicked our butts, but the season was very successful and should not hinge on the SB alone to be so sullen and pointing fingers at JJ or whomever…

  395. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 5:14 pm

Maverick – If this year was anything like last years football season, it should prove that the BCS doesn’t mean chit! I agree that the BCS teams or SEC, Big 10, blah, blah, blah, are all overrated and hyped too much… But if last year was any indication that any team can win on any given day…I feel there will be lots of upsets this year…like….

    Hawaii beating Florida’s arse…which really wouldn’t be an upset but a reality…

Georgia no longer number 1 after a few weeks…

    A surprise team climbing the Top 25 ladder…ala Hawaii…

  396. Ralph August 21, 2008 5:15 pm

Coach can call the play but I would think the QB calls the snap count and the rhythm of the count to change things up, so how can JJ be responsible for the same snap count…

  397. Maverick August 21, 2008 5:17 pm

Quentin Beaver’s RB experience? I’m clueless.

PB – BCS clout is getting chipped away yearly. Thanks to the top WAC contenders.

  398. Ralph August 21, 2008 5:20 pm

Bighilofan2 you haven’t been on line for awhile, so I repeat, see Tom Mui’s post 90.

  399. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 5:21 pm

Maverick – Quentin Beaver doesn’t have running back experience, but like Kazz mentioned before, that would be an interesting guy to have back there running over people. He’s very raw though even at his natural DT position. Strong as a bull, but needs loads of work to even crack the rotation on the DLine. Maybe a move to Big Back wouldn’t be so bad…all we’d need him for is to block and short yardage situations or that infamous shovel pass or sweep…

  400. duffer August 21, 2008 5:22 pm

    LizK

    You have mail!

  401. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 5:23 pm

    wow pass 4 hunned already…

  402. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 5:26 pm

    alph,

If you look back on my posts they weren’t about pointing fingers, but the positives we can draw from for the Gators. You might have to go a few posts up. I don’t know what adjustments might have worked, but we didn’t try any, as far as I could see.

I have no hard feelings toward JJ at all, it was a decision he had to make and we’re all benefitting from that today, i.e. Frazier gone, improving facilities, great new AD, etc.

I still appreciate what JJ has done for the program and I don’t blame him for leaving.

But like I’ve said and that’s actually my point, the D did very well in the SB and that gives me a lot of hope.

  403. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 5:30 pm

    Sorry-Ralph, missed the R.

  404. lab rat August 21, 2008 5:30 pm

ST how many qbs are they taking to Florida?

  405. duffer August 21, 2008 5:32 pm

    A-House Family,

I have a friend who just got back from Vegas and was playing the progressive penny slots at one of the Station Casinos. The jackpot was up to 1.7 mil. And he hit the jackpot, but…….he didn’t play the max bet…..

Morale of the story, play the max bet. Evidently in the penny slots there are TWO MAX buttons. Now go ahead and win the jackpot and don’t forget me!

The name of the person is being witheld to protect his studpid identity!

  406. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 5:34 pm

FloridaTed – IMHO the OLine started giving up after awhile from being overwhelmed by Georgia’s D. Seems like they weren’t even trying to win but just going through the motions to get the game over with. I dunno I still feel our OLine is suspect. I mean a week before Florida and the Oline is playing musical chairs still kind of concerns me. This group should have been solidified a long time ago. I still don’t have confidence in our OLine yet, still seems shaky to me… I know they will get it together but they need to have a sense of urgency!

  407. Maverick August 21, 2008 5:35 pm

    Duffer –
so your friend won his penny back, plus a few extra?
Now who was the porta-qee that thunk up 2 Max buttons?
That’s like having to say ‘Let it ride” twice at the crap tables, or you don’t get the winnings.

    Too funny that story

  408. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 5:36 pm

lab rat – I would say all three go…Brent, Inoke, and Greg

  409. duffer August 21, 2008 5:41 pm

    Mav,

Sorry to say, he was asian! 🙂

    A non gambler!

    It just ceases to amaze!

  410. tom mui August 21, 2008 5:43 pm

RALPH: If it helps any, I did e-mail (through his wife) my letter to BHF2 prior to posting it and we are in communication with each other.

  411. tom mui August 21, 2008 5:48 pm

MeiLing: re your #393 – what meeting are you referring to? If it is the Contractors Board, I have a conflict but it has to do with UH and UH football.

The letter to Dr. McClain can be lifted off the blog.

  412. Kelli August 21, 2008 5:49 pm

Pauoa Boy: Haha! So funny… Destiny’s Child! Maybe “Independent Woman” is my anthem. Nah, I’m not THAT independent.

  413. Hawaiianbod August 21, 2008 5:50 pm

Mahalo to Tom Mui and BHF2 for their efforts!

    Tsaikos REPRESENT!!!

  414. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 5:51 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

It’s hard to say where exactly the O-Line is at this point, but Big Mack said he wants to have 10 Line men ready to play, so that might be part of the reason why they’re not quite in sync yet, plus several injuries at various times. Coach seems to be happy overall with the progress, actually ahead of time, according to him. Let’s hope it all works out.

I really would love to hear ST’s opinion on this, how about it, Herr Tsai-Meister?

  415. Ralph August 21, 2008 6:01 pm

tom mui now you tell me, after 321 post later…anyway I just called him 5 minutes ago and left a voice mail message, much aloha tom.

  416. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 6:02 pm

Kelli – Please no, haha… wait you weren’t a Charlie’s Angel were you…Lucy Liu in disguise maybe??? Wasn’t that the theme song for that movie? So if you’re saying this is your anthem I’m scared lmao…

Question: Tell me what you think about me
I buy my own diamonds and I buy my own rings
Only ring your cell-y when I’m feelin lonely
When it’s all over please get up and leave
Question: Tell me how you feel about this
Try to control me boy you get dismissed

  417. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 6:09 pm

FloridaTed – I believe in Coach Mack, but all the reports from practice aren’t to appealing as far as consistency goes. I know the boys have been knicked up but in the trenches they need to learn to play through pain. Granted we don’t want any significant injuries but I still am not feeling this group yet….time will tell though and I’m hoping for a positive outcome. The OLine at this point seems will open at the Swamp like this… Kia, AhSoon, Estes, Hisatake, Letuli/Steiny…although Letuli is battling Kia on the leftside wonder why he doesn’t just start both of them.

  418. oldie August 21, 2008 6:16 pm

    Florida Ted,

I feel the same about JJ – happy for what he did, but also happy about our situation now with Coach Mack, JD, etc.

I think the person that the Warriors are going to miss the most is Colt. We were spoiled with his accuracy, gamesmanship, charisma, willingness to autograph, etc.

  419. Hawaiianbod August 21, 2008 6:17 pm

    PB – Lucy Liu=mmmmmm. LOL

  420. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 6:25 pm

Hawaiianbod – Yessir…Lucy Liu is eye candy fo shizzle…

  421. MeiLing August 21, 2008 6:32 pm

    tommui,

Yup, I was referring to the Contractors’ board meeting tomorrow. Is there any way to get your letter to them? Maybe a fax? Don’t know if the board’s emails are public. You make a lot of sense in the letter & it addresses what Sadowski is protesting. Is UH’s legal officer attending the meeting?

    Happy Birthday, Ralph!

  422. Stephen Tsai August 21, 2008 6:34 pm

    Graunke is back!

  423. SteveM August 21, 2008 6:36 pm

ST — will Friday and Saturday practices be at Aloha Stadium too?

  424. ryan August 21, 2008 6:36 pm

Liz Chun just interviewed coach Mac at the Pigskin Pigout and he said Brent Rausch has a pulled muscle in his throwing arm and it has been affecting him the last couple of practices.

  425. Da Punchbowl Kid August 21, 2008 6:37 pm

    Yah, he is… 🙂
    How ’bout dat. 😉

  426. Garret August 21, 2008 6:40 pm

    ST,

Thank you for the update on Tyler! It will be interesting to see what happens as the season goes along…4 options at QB. Tyler is well behind in practice time and has to prove himself to the team before he moves up the depth chart, but it is a long season and you never know what could happen with injuries, etc.

  427. Hawaiianbod August 21, 2008 6:40 pm

Kanoa Leahey just reported that Tyler has met all the academic requirements. No word yet from UH.

    as the world turns………….

  428. Da Punchbowl Kid August 21, 2008 6:40 pm

Rob D. had it on KITV Sports tonight. No mention on KGMB, great coverage of the Pigskin Pigout with Coach Mack.

  429. MeiLing August 21, 2008 6:42 pm

OK, TYLER, keep on keeping up with academics! You can do it.

  430. Garret August 21, 2008 6:42 pm

    # 2left:
    August 21st, 2008 at 11:06 am

The 2006 team had the most talent and was the best ever –except in the W-L column. I think the difference is that Colt and the WRs learned how to win in 2006, and applied that in 2007. The last incompletion at Alabama and the last bounced pass against OSU — those are completions in 2007. Now, whether the 2007 team would have had the talent to be in the position to win those games is another question . . .

I don’t have to type up my opinion of 2006 vs. 2007 because I pretty much would have just said what 2left said.

  431. Hawaiianbod August 21, 2008 6:42 pm

    oops……thanks ST!

  432. madeinhawaii August 21, 2008 6:43 pm

Remember when everything finally clicked for Rolovich and he came in to relieve TC and went on a winning streak, bringing BYU to it’s knees? Then TC came back the following year and did all right. Tyler was to start but he wasn’t quite up to snuff at his debut and Colt took over. But that first season with Colt wasn’t what legends are made of. But each year Colt got better.

We’ll miss Colt, for sure, but I believe that the Warriors will find someone who will lead the charge again. The calibre of players for all positions are higher than they have ever been. We are comparing our players to the best of the 2006 and 2007 teams. Of course they may pale in comparison, presently, but in contrast to the years before the last two, I think our players are a few degrees better. They will gel faster, develop into better players and will enthrall and excite the fans like never before.

The legacy that the 2006 and 2007 teams left behind was the bond of family and sacrifice for the team. The sense of “family” and “for the team” spirit has firmly taken root within the Warrior program. It’s what makes for a winning team. With McMackin staying behind, that bond will only get stronger. And, I sense, so will the Warriors.

  433. Garret August 21, 2008 6:43 pm

The most important thing for me is for Tyler to get in solid Academic standing and graduate. Not only would that best serve him for the future, if he doesn’t graduate then UH would take a hit in the APR and could lose a scholarship!

  434. Tombo Ahi August 21, 2008 6:44 pm

Glad to hear Graunke got his issues cleared up. The Phoenix got a lot of ashes to rise from.

  435. Garret August 21, 2008 6:46 pm

One person who also deserves our thanks if Wassupdoc/Capital-ist. She has been working with Bighilofan2 on the Cooke Field issue and she definitely knows what goes on at the Legislature. Between Bighilofan2, Tom Mui, and Wassupdoc, we had a strong team working to try to clear up the Cooke Field mess.

  436. madeinhawaii August 21, 2008 6:48 pm

    Garret,

I was thinking the same thing regarding Tyler. Hopefully he sets a good example and keeps up with his academics this year.

  437. Tombo Ahi August 21, 2008 6:49 pm

    hey garret,

the weber state game is no longer being listed on gameplan. i think they’re messing with us.

  438. Kelli August 21, 2008 6:55 pm

Hope Tyler can keep it up and that this doesn’t happen again. I’m happy for him, though.

Pauoa Boy: Um… Lucy Liu is Chinese, so obviously that wasn’t me. LOL… I
don’t buy diamonds and rings. But, nice lyrics. Although I prefer K-pop!

  439. Maverick August 21, 2008 7:26 pm

Right on Tyler! Go get ’em. Plenty to catch up on.
ST- do you know if he was working out at a separate location, such as a gym, daily running, etc? I hope he’s not coming back too cold.

  440. Tombo Ahi August 21, 2008 7:29 pm

st, what’s some of the differences/changes in this year’s ha‘a?

  441. jm2375 August 21, 2008 7:33 pm

Kekoa – #143 – I’m telling you it wasn’t me! 😉 Did you interrogate Esme? Or Stretch? But the Podagee sausage sounds yummy.

Yeah Tyler! Keep up with your classes, you won’t regret it!

Congrats to Natasha Kai and the USA soccer team! Way to go!

  442. tom mui August 21, 2008 7:35 pm

BIGHILOFAN: I hope you are reading the blog – my latest shot!!!!

Ms Verna Oda is the Executive Officer of the Contractors’ Licensing Board and wrote in the HSB of August 7, 2008 the following:

“At the September and October 2007 board meetings, Sadowski expressed his belief that synthetic field surface installation process requires specialized skills not held by the average landscaping contractor…”

“ Tady Arisumi, the board chairman, (asked) Sadowski to review the wording of the board’s landscaping and turf classifications…”

“In the meantime, the matter is still the subject of public discussion at the board”.
    ——————————-
I assume that the matter may be discussed at the Contractors’ Licensing Board on Friday (tomorrow)
Taking this at face value, it just means that a specialized license is NOT required at this time.
If the Board changes the rules, it still has to be approved by the Governor. Needless to add, the Rule change would only apply after it becomes law.

  443. manoa magic August 21, 2008 7:40 pm

We paid Dobele and got rid of him….same with Frazier…now, do we let Bolla stay and sweep his mistreatment of players under the rug for four more years, let more wahine basketball players be verbally abused, and let all the good high school players go away because of his coaching style? Its time for the chancelor and president to step in to advise and support the athletic department in making the correct decision for the student athletes. Get rid of the BUM!! We dont need a BUM BOLLA!!

  444. bighilofan2 August 21, 2008 7:50 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos everywhere.

Tom Mui, great letter #90. Mei Ling, we’re on it coach. Garret, doubles for you too.

    So here’s the ideas.

tomorrow there is gonna be 2 meetings. the 8:30 downtown postoffice Contractor’s Board. Logan needs morale support, and I won’t be there. He should take a copy of Tom Mui’s #90 post.

More important, the Contractor’s Board meeting didn’t have any official announcement about what was gonna be on the agenda, so they can’t pass any rule – no public notice. All they got is synthetic turf. There is no public notice, so far as I know, that complies with HRS Chapter 91 in terms of them having a hearing to pass a new rule.

The Board of Regents UH holding a meeting tomorrow morning 9:30 at Windward Community College. During the public comments section someone should tell them about Tom Mui’s blog, Stinky Sadowski’s mischief and ask them to recommend to David McClain that he get on the stick mui pronto, as in Tom Mui Pronto.

And last but not least for now,

    Mrs. and Mr. A House,

I will see you at the Golden Corral, God willing. Then we can all be the Guests of Honor and honor each other. I’m looking forward to that big time.

I’m sure hoping one of you Honoruru types can be morale support for Logan Hamocon. He called today, seemed like a nice guy, i said what I said in the above about the meeting agenda and no notice, but it doesn’t sound so right if he is the one saying “rigged” and “fixed”. It needs to be one of us. Sorry, I gotta play Matlock and da heat not giving me a pass for do our most important job, fixing the field now. I hoping one of you guyz can back him up.

    Ralph

Happy Birthday friend and thanks for the message.

    sjmacro,

always great to talk to you. i see you neva brag and tell da Tsaikos da JUGS fix stay all pau. 😀

    Go Warriors!

  445. Kazz August 21, 2008 8:02 pm

    TSAIKOGATE 2008

I will be sending out e-mails sometime next week with confirmed information for all of this year’s tailgates.

If you believe I do not have your e-mail contact information please e-mail me at tsaikotailgate (at) gmail (dot) com.

OR if you have RSVP’ed to the TV Tsaikogate for the August 30th Florida game I will see you there.

    BTW…

What a “new” ha’a for 2008? Aiyessoooosss… I no can keep up wit dis kine!

Anyway… UH vs WASHINGTON 2007 on ESPN-U RIGHT NOW!!!!

  446. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 8:03 pm

Tyler Graunke…good job, make sure you don’t slack off and keep them grades up. Now it’s time to do work on the field and help your team prepare for the season. You may be behind right now, but work and push your teammates daily! You may not be on the trip to Florida but you can do your part in helping the boys get ready to go into battle!

  447. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 8:10 pm

    Pauoa Boy (418),

One thing I’ve learned, coaches look at things very different than fans, they have a very different and deeper perspective, no comparison, no matter how football smart the fans are. So I just wait and see and hope for the best.

    Oldie (419),

Remember, Colt wasn’t THE Colt in his first year either, besides Colts don’t come around very often.

    madeinhawaii (433),

    My sentiments exactly, well said.

  448. bighilofan2 August 21, 2008 8:10 pm

    Capitol-ist/Wassup Doc

Thank you for all your work on this project too. You are my connection to Logan, and you got great great ideas my friend.

So what we gotta do is make sure the Contractor’s Board don’t make some new rules for synthetic field fixes in the future. They want to make new rules for who can make synthetic field fixes. a sure juice job for Sandowski. plus, all da other contractors who now can do synthetic fields are gonna get iced out of future field fixes, if these clowns pass a new rule.
they gotta at least give public notice, not just to Logan. They gotta give all us notice, and that they neva do with their agenda notice. The proposed changes, multi pages, neva was put in a public notice about the meeting.

you can tell when its a juice job, da kim chee smell really strong! but dats all for the future jobs Sandowski like improve his odds. the upcoming high school fixes (5). shoots, Logan Hamocon wen make one spiffy Murakami, and one day later the Contractor’s Board stay proposing new “rules.” dis was last September when Logan started fixin da Murakami stadium.

plus Logan tole me he ready for go, deposit monies, suppliers, he said he can do da job right now. he also tole me da manufacturer get 10 year warranty.

So wats da holdup UH? If you guyz no can move fastah, use one mo fas playah! Go Go Go! Junk you guyz, really junk junk junk!

    Tom Mui,

wat yu tink about my plantashun style engrish? Kulcha shock yah?! he he. 😀

  449. Jason August 21, 2008 8:10 pm

duffer: Hehe, the same thing happened to my bro-in-law with the penny slots. 😛

Liz Chun just interviewed coach Mac at the Pigskin Pigout and he said Brent Rausch has a pulled muscle in his throwing arm and it has been affecting him the last couple of practices.

    Hmm.

  450. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 8:10 pm

Kelli – It’s all good…so Japanese/Korean??? Anyway, I hope I not offending you at all, cause I getting scolding for picking on you. Sorry, I hope you don’t think I’m picking on you, just giving you some initiation into the family…you know like my younger sis or sumtin. Sorry if I’m making too much trouble, but you’re good fun and although I’m getting scolded…too bad haha. Nah, but seriously apologies…

  451. Jason August 21, 2008 8:11 pm

And glad to hear that Tyler will be returning. Better late than never, and yes, hopefully he keeps in good academic standing and graduates, so that he doesn’t harm the APR. Remember, 100% graduation. 🙂

  452. gigi-hawaii © August 21, 2008 8:17 pm

Glad to hear that Graunke got his act together. Hope it’s permanent!

Yes, 100% graduation is the goal.

  453. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 8:24 pm

FloridaTed – Yups, point taken…I trust the coaches to do their thing and get the boys prepared. Just my opinion though…I guess it’s because of the fact that we’ve been spoiled over the years with such great linemen, that we expect too much. I’m guilty of it of course, but I’m the type who wants the boys to overachieve and become successful. I hate the word potential when talking about our OLine. They have the potential to be good…to me is a kick in the nuts. They don’t have the potential to be good, they’re already good or else they wouldn’t be playing D1 football and be where they’re at. It’s not about potential, it’s about doing work and to keep working. Everyone of our boys has the ability to be great and do great things on the football field and the anticipation to see it all unfold this season is nerve racking to say the least. Like you, I believe Coach Mack and the rest of the coaches will have the team ready to play each and every game. So although I’m skeptical with the OLine, my gut says everything will be all pono…

  454. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 8:25 pm

    Tyler Graunke,

I’m very glad you’ve fought your way back, at least academically. Keep it up, that paper is more important than football in the long run.

Keep on fighting up-hill, one never knows. Your own coach Rolo can tell you a story about that.

  455. gigi-hawaii © August 21, 2008 8:29 pm

It will be interesting to see which QB gets called if Brent can’t throw accurately because of his pulled muscle during the Florida game. Will it be Funaki or Alexander?

  456. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 8:31 pm

gigi-hawaii – good question…but you know my pick already, I would go with Funaki…more suited to beat Floridas D and keep them honest. IMHO

  457. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 8:31 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

    I sure hope so.

  458. gigi-hawaii © August 21, 2008 8:32 pm

I don’t know about Funaki. Alexander has the size to withstand any sacks that might come his way.

  459. gigi-hawaii © August 21, 2008 8:33 pm

I can just see the slimmer QBs being tossed around like a rag doll.

  460. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 8:36 pm

gigi-hawaii – lmao, I knew you were going to say something to that effect haha… Alexander is big no doubt, but he also has a lil boo boo too. Plus don’t underestimate Funaki’s size, he’s strong and built to run over guys too…but don’t know why you’re worried about sacks…I would be more worried about who’s better suited to lead the team if I had to choose who would go in and my choice…tada…Inoke all the way!

  461. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 8:38 pm

gigi-hawaii – remember size doesn’t matter, just ask some guy named Colt Brennan.

  462. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 8:39 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

We don’t really know the game plan, so I have no idea who they would call on, especially since they are co-#2.

I’m like you, I’m on pins and needles until kick-off. Too bad we have Goliath right off. Would have been nice to have a game or two beforehand. But then again, it’s the Gators first game also and they have issues too.

We all know that Colt sustained several concussions!

  464. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 8:43 pm

    Gigi,

Funaki is build like a free safety and is strong and mobile. He can handle a sack as good as anybody. It all depends on the game plan who they’re gonna call.

  465. Jason August 21, 2008 8:45 pm

Based on how they’ve run the offense, I’d pick Alexander. His physical skills are more conducive to the R&S than Inoke. I love the local braddah, and he definitely shows he’s a leader of this team, but I’ve only seen one good practice from him. Granted, that was Wednesday, so he gets bonus points for that. But Alexander has been steadily impressive since he came back from his toe/ankle. With Inoke, a wobbling pass against Florida could be an easy pick six. That would be my concern.

  466. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 8:47 pm

    gigi-hawaii – Sheesh, I’ll stop talking already nevermind lol…

FloridaTed – Sorry just biased on Funaki, nothing against Alexander but so true it’ll be based on the gameplan as they both bring there own style to the table. Alexander has the bigger arm, but Inoke has the experience and smarts to run the offense well. To me it doesn’t matter if we play Florida in the beginning or the end. Either way we just need to win and keep winning. If we beat Florida and they have a bad season = no respect…if we lose = chit talking by the analyst…if we win and they have a good season = 1st game of the season fluke more chit talking. To me we just need to go in there and kick there arse period!

  467. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 8:47 pm

    Gigi,

A concussion has nothing to do with ones size. If one gets hit the wrong way, even the biggest guys go down.

  468. gigi-hawaii © August 21, 2008 8:48 pm

Wasn’t Inoke intercepted in the Sugar Bowl? Contrast that effort with Graunke’s touchdown pass.

  469. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 8:51 pm

Jason – True, Funaki would have been the bomb back in the Bob Wagner Triple option offense days. Regardless he’s my boy and from the games I’ve seen him play in high school and also college, bruddah can handle no problemo!

  470. Shannon August 21, 2008 8:51 pm

Pauoa: Yeah, I like Funaki too… that might be the “local Boy Bias” I have too… But I agree about the experience level natural talent and the durability…

  471. Garret August 21, 2008 8:53 pm

    Tombo,

ESPN GamePlan took Weber State off their schedule listing? I think they are just messing with us and they will put it back after UH does well against Florida. Plus, what else do they have during that time slot?

  472. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 8:54 pm

gigi-hawaii – WOW, seriously I need to go to bed now…lol…you are funny!

  473. FloridaTed August 21, 2008 8:56 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

Florida loses to the Warriors, Gainesville would be in shock for the whole season.
We’re 35 point underdogs, there is no fluke with that kind of margin. We would be top 20 or better for sure. If we also beat Oregon State on the road, we’ll be top 10. If we do that, who’s gonna beat us after that?

  474. Garret August 21, 2008 8:57 pm

Miami is having trouble figuring out which TEs they will keep…and they are looking at using one of their TEs as a FB also! That means that BOTH Reagan and Grigsby could be cut…in hindsight, Reagan wasn’t one of the guys that the new management brought in and might have never had a chance to make the team.

Sparano said he would try to give other tight ends Justin Peelle and Sean Ryan enough snaps to make his decision easier. Sparano is not certain if he will keep three or four tight ends because he’s tinkering with the notion of using one of them as an H-back or quasi-fullback.

He said the tiebreaker could come down to which one is more proficient on special teams.

“Can this guy go into the backfield as a tight end, give us some snaps there and play on special teams, or is he just going to be a tight end that can’t contribute on special teams when I have this fullback who can?” Sparano said.

Sparano was most likely referring to fullback Boomer Grigsby, who has supplanted Reagan Mauia at the top of the depth chart because of his special-teams play and better pass-catching skills.

  475. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 8:59 pm

Shannon – Funaki just needs to be given the chance I garrans babbarrans he will surprise people with his athletic ability. I’m not biased at the fact that he’s one local bruddah I’m biased at the fact that he is someone I would love to go into battle with. Funaki, although very talented has much to offer, leadership, hardwork, humble, team player, etc…he’s just a real all around great player…

  476. stacyj August 21, 2008 8:59 pm

How’s that assault and battery case against Reagan going? Will it go to trial soon?

  479. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 9:03 pm

FloridaTed – Oh yes, no doubt the Gators and fans would be she-she pants after there arse whoopin. But you know as well as I do, we would get minimal love unless we continue to win. My ideal season this year would be to whoop up on everybody…Top 25…BCS Championship game against…Georgia…for a rematch…with them being #1 in the nation…and then get revenge and like Colt would say…”Beat them f**kers”

Texas Tech’s coach is dealing with reporters who label his QB a “system QB”.

He was asked about Graham Harrell and the dreaded system quarterback label. Leach said people who use the term don’t have a handle on everything that goes into an offense.

“I think it’s just someone who doesn’t understand football very well,” Leach said. “It’s like, what’s not a system quarterback? Some guy that doesn’t have plays, that just drops back and says everybody go deep and throws it.

“I don’t know that that person understands the role of coaches, the role of players, the role of other positions playoff off one another. Did Archie Griffin run all those yards without anybody call plays or blocking for him? It’s just a cop out. It’s just something that somebody is trying to utilize, perpetuate an agenda.”

  482. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 9:10 pm

    Re: System QB

That is such a bullchit term. Every QB is a system QB then because they can each run there teams offensive system very well. Whoever made up that term really doesn’t know chit about football. Graham Harrell like Colt Brennan is going to destroy some records…lucky he’s got all world receiver Michael Crabtree though…

    Roster analysis for the Dolphins.

WR: IN:Ted Ginn Jr, Derek Hagan. On the bubble: Ernest Wilford, Greg Camarillo, Davone Bess, Anthony Armstrong. On the outs? Jayson Foster, David Kircus. The skinny: The Dolphins probably keep five of these guys.

Camarillo and Bess have been fairly consistent but they need to excell on special teams to nail down a position.

  491. stacyj August 21, 2008 9:18 pm

PB, you better watch out, white girls don’t survive Kalihi without some “special” weapons. Does my mouth count?

  492. Garret August 21, 2008 9:18 pm

Looks like they will keep 5 from the TE/FB group and Reagan is current #6 on the list.

FB/TE: IN: Anthony Fasano, David Martin. On the bubble: Reagan Mauia, Boomer Grigsby, Justin Peelle, Sean Ryan. On the outs? Matthew Mulligan. The skinny: The Dolphins will probably keep five from this group and that normally breaks down to two FBs and three TEs, but because the Dolphins use TEs in the backfield as blockers, the team has flexibility on personnel. The decisions will boil down primarily to special teams. The better special teamers will get the nod and, based on past performances, that is an advantage for Grigsby and Peelle first, followed by Ryan and Mauia.

  493. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 9:19 pm

Texas A&M researchers claim that they have found a way to cheaply convert everyday waste directly into 95-octane gasoline. If they are correct that they can do this conversion of billions of gallons of gas for under $2 per gallon, this could be a HUGE benefit to our economy and environment. Instead of having our landfills get more and more filled, they could be turned into profit-generating gasoline!

    Pauoa Boy,

I agree with you–Bess will make Miami’s team. In the worst case, he’ll be on the practice squad…but I think he’ll actually make the active roster because he’s seriously contending for their starting slot WR. The other thing is that in order to put Bess on the practice squad they would have to cut him first…and any other team could grab him for free!

Incidentally, looking at the http://www.contractors-license.org under Hawaii, I see a whole mess of specialty licenses but no listing for synthetic turf specialty license.

  512. Pauoa Boy August 21, 2008 9:30 pm

Garret – Nah, I say he makes the team. Ted Ginn Jr. is the only for sure wideout Miami has. Hagan and Wilford are Houdini types no you see me now you don’t. Davone is the best route runner and sure handed so he should be good. I don’t think as crappy as Miami is they would be dumb enough to cut him, then again it is the Dolphins…

Kay fo reals leaving now, catch you lataz gang…

  515. Garret August 21, 2008 9:32 pm

    Al,

I agree that a team cannot have enough depth. One thing that hasn’t been mentioned in the 2006 vs. 2007 debate is that the recruiting on defense was *significantly* upgraded around 2005-2006, and UH had a *lot* more depth on D in 2007 than 2006. The number of stars next to the players recruited on D showed it, and seeing them on the field showed it.

The flip side of recruiting more on D is that the offense gets less depth. Someone mentioned that they would like to put the offense from several years ago with the defense from this year…but there are only so many scholarships to go around and when either side of the ball gets the majority then the other side will naturally go down a little. That was one reason why I hated JJ recruiting too many QBs, but he mainly did that early on at UH and things were more reasonable the last 3-4 years.

  516. Garret August 21, 2008 9:34 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

I agree with you–Bess will make the team and he might get a good amount of playing time. I think if Miami tried to cut him to get him on their practice squad some other NFL team would happily take Bess.

I think at tomorrow’s CLB meeting they are just revisiting the issue of issuing a recommendation on whether a C-68FF contractor license should be required to install field turf. These recommendations are not legally binding.

In July 2007 and August 2007, the CLB issued recommendations that a C-68FF contractor license was not required to install field turf. At Sadowski’s recommendation, in October 2007 the CLB issued a recommendation that a C-68FF contractor license should be required to install field turf. Tomorrow’s meeting will be the fourth recommendation on the issue.

Tom Mui and others working on the Field Turf issue:

I’m not sure if this can be applied to fighting Sadowski (also for that matter, don’t know how true this is – to become C-68FF certified), but I found this in the comment section of the other paper. Interesting comments.

    yeah so Wrote:

“Someone said the guy should have done his homework and gotten the new license ? Well guess who gets to decide if he gets a license or not ? Denny Sadowski ! Think he is going to vote to give hime a licsense ? Not until he shows he has four years experience installing field turf in a supervisory position working for another Licesned Filed Turf Installer. Been doing it under a C-27 licsne, sorry no good, go get a job and apply again in four years. Guess what, there is only four companies that have the licsen and they are not going to vote to allow new competitors. The whole process is an inherent conflict of interest. In the name of the protecting consumers from uscrupouls, unqualfied contactors, what they really do is protect themselves from competition.”

If you need a link, click on my name. Sorry ST for the link, but its for a good cause.

USA men’s and women’s 4×100 DQ…commentators-is there a leadership problem since there is a vacancy in running US track and field…remember Hermie was talked about for the leadership role that has not be filled….for him to be considered must indicate how low US track has dropped in its organization and leadership to help the athletes…

If TG had any thoughts of being a TEAM player, he wud have made sure that his scholastic issues were in order as coach MAC made mention to earlier. So I’m not worried bout TG…..has he ever appologized to the team for his dropping the ball and failing the team?
If he makes it back, it’s ALL on him now, I don’t wish he fails because the way I see it, he’s done that all by himself already.

    Good luck

    LOGAN HAMOCON.

Fight for the State. Specialty license requirements? Worried about Honokaa Field? I can understand they worried about da Nobriga/Rodrigues/Farrara fixahs, using duck tape lie dat. I can understand the Contractors Board no like da good guyz competing with da “junk kine one time fix and fly da koop kine guyz” but lets get real about making rules so that peeps like Logan, who have proven they can do the job, and if they’re the low bidder they get the job. Saves us taxpayers $$.
I like that. Get 5 high school field fixes coming up.
This deal is a big deal. The appearance is to stifle
competition. How this came up in the first place, the day after Hamocon got the Murakami contract, i no care what Sadowski says of his good intentions,
his actions show me his good intentions.

    nuff said! 👿

    RALPH – MONOTARO

From what I gather from you guys is that C-68FF is a specialty license for installation of synthetic turf.

Looking at the Reg Agency(?) website, I see that Sandowski list it on his licenses. But I have not found any references to C-68FF when I googled it.
    Am I missing something?

The listing of specialty licenses on the contractors website list a whole bunch of specialty licenses but none for synthetic turf. I find nothing about it (C-68FF) in the HRS or HRA.

So what I am trying to determine is whether the C-68FF is a “proposed” license (phoney baloney?) which is not a “rule” that has the effect of law – that is, approved, signed by the governor, went through the process etc etc.

I want to make sure that we are on SOLID ground = so if you have a chapter and verse somewhere, let me know!

    Thanks.

Kelli, only remember that your dad’s kid was also a Dole to FHS kid. So many of the teachers’ kids went to private school or they would never send them to a school in Kalihi so when one of the staff did, it was always cool to see. Another notable staffer’s kid is Augie T. I went to school with his younger brother that passed away in high school.

  613. Joel August 22, 2008 9:38 am

The Florida Gators have started the fall season, 0-1. Fay continues to pound Gainesville, and it does not look good. When Fay reaches the Gulf of Mexico, Gainesville will be on the right side of the storm, the bad side. Gainesville expects major flooding, wind damage, and power outages. Click http://www.wcjb.com/

Gainesville is known as a “Tree City”. Since it’s founding, the city has been landscaped with an abundant of trees and have passed laws protecting them. As a result, the city is crippled when hit by a tropical storm.

Hawaii traveling fans should expect the unexpected. In 2004, Gainesville faced a similar blow forcing UF to close for a week and canceling the weekend football game. No announcements have been made as of yet.

Howzit DPK! I talked to cousin *BR* about what his work schedule is looking like. After finishing this next movie project in France, he will be returning to da ceded lands with a syndicated morning TV show to be broadcasting ‘live’ from remote locations on both Maui and Oahu.

This would be an opportune time to team with him and showcase some of your story ideas. He just wants to make sure that you write him and his braddah “da Rock” (ala Scorpion King) in as the heros and not the heavys! Bwahahaha!

  615. Thomas Mui August 22, 2008 9:48 am

    MADEINHAWAII:

Thank you for your #610. Strange that the Contractors Board doesn’t list that as one of the specialties.

What puzzles me still is C-68FF one of those licenses that was made into law and if so, when OR is this classification one of those listings that codifies specialties in all 50 states?

I refer to Verna Oda’s statement in the SB 8/7/08: “n the meantime, the matter is still the subject of public discussion at the board.” I have to assume that C-68FF is not mandatory for the laying of synthetic turf but can be done under the landscape specialty.

    Thomas,

Did you see the July KHNL article regarding CF?

    http://www.khnl.com/Global/story.asp?S=8701542

I think it was proposed but because only a handful of contractors have that license, it may not have been ratified as it would put a lot of landscapers in a bind.

You may want to contact the writer to see if there is more to it now.

  618. LizKauai [Believer] August 22, 2008 9:55 am

  624. Stretch August 22, 2008 10:35 am

Got half a report from the second half of this morning’s practice from ST. Maybe Loa can give the first half??

Rausch was held out of practice today w/ a sore arm. Alexander and Funaki taking all the snaps. If Rausch’s arm isn’t ready for Florida, I would expect Alexander to get the start. Graunke was not on the field, not sure where he was.

During the 2-min drill, the D came up with a few picks.

Another thing to keep in mind, if you are one the sidelines and Alexander is throwing the ball away, be careful. He REALLY throws the ball away, not just out of bounds, out of the field.

  625. (Jesse) James August 22, 2008 10:37 am

Without question the 2006 Warriors were better.
2006 schedule was harder, we played the best Boise team ever, in Boise, and Alabama in their place. Neither loss was a blowout.

Those two games in Aloha stadium and THAT team might have won those games and had two GREAt victories.

2007, our schedule was not close to being as difficult as the previous year.

In 2006 we SMOKED WAC teams more soundly than the undefeated Boise team did.

In 2007 we struggled in games that should have never been close in the conference.

The 2006 Warriors were every bit as good as 2006 BCS buster Broncos, and better than the 2007 team.

The history of standards for contemporary quality systems traces back to 1959. Then, the U.S. Department of Defense released a quality management program under the designation MIL-Q-9858. For nearly three decades, this standard was primarily used in the U.S. defense and aerospace industries. In the mid 1960s, the former Soviet Union introduced a national standard (KC YKP) in an attempt to manage quality across the country.
