Back to the starting line

The Warriors canceled practice this morning because the field was soaked. They considered other sites, even making tentative plans to practice at Aloha Stadium. But then the weather turned nice, and the Warriors have decided to practice on their grass field this afternoon, starting at 4 p.m.

* * *

The Punahou football team has requested the use of UH’s grass practice field in preparation for the state playoffs. And the headline would scream: Manti Teβ€˜o Is Going to UH.

* * *

The Warriors are not expected to receive any new commitments for at least a week.
But according to people in the know, there are at least five prospects who will be attending Saturday’s game against Idaho.

* * *

About 30 scholarships will come off the books at the end of the academic year in May. The NCAA limits Division I-A teams to 25 new scholarships a year. But some of the grayshirts β€” Christian Vasconcellos and, maybe Kainoa LaCount, for example β€” might be able to count toward the 2008 class if they meet the NCAA requirements and enroll as full-time students in January.

* * *

Spoke with June Jones, who confirmed SMU and UH are in serious talks about a 2010 game at Aloha Stadium.
One of the holdups, I’ve been told, is UH might have to move an already scheduled September game to November or December.

    Wow! You’re early…. and I’m late! My preference is a BCS school vs. SMU. Oh well, I don’t get a vote! πŸ˜€ 😯 πŸ˜†

Tombo Ahi shows the following games scheduled for Sept. 2010 –

    2010 Schedule
    Date Team
    09/04 USC
    09/18 @ Colorado
    09/25 UNLV

Again – that looks fine to me especially with the game at CU. We don’t want that any later (colder) than Sept! IMHO! πŸ˜€ 😯 πŸ˜†

  3. brew808 November 18, 2008 6:41 am

OK – just want to say Aloha to everyone. The word today (just like everyday) is “Trouble”. Let’s see how much “trouble” I can make, and how whether I can stay out of any “trouble” myself! Laters….! πŸ˜€ 😯 πŸ˜†

  4. myki November 18, 2008 6:41 am

Good morning ST. Sorry but we won’t be at practice this am. Didn’t get to bed till 3 this morning. sj is still asleep.

Hope to see some of you at CTC tonight.

  6. Stretch November 18, 2008 6:45 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

I amaze myself sometimes. By the time I got home and into bed, it was almost 230am. I was able to roll out of bed at 415 to make my flight to Kauai. Sitting on Kauai now but not sure how productive I’ll be. I’ll try not to drool over the keyboard.

  7. Stretch November 18, 2008 6:46 am

myki – wake sj up!! wake Bobby Curran up!! What’s up with the lazy people.

  8. myki November 18, 2008 6:54 am

Stretch–we stopped at Zippys for some saimin before going home, so didn’t actually hit the bed till 3. He needs more sleep than I do so I’ll just leave the two fellas alone. The other fella is 4 legged. We interrupted his sleep when we got home and had to reposition him in our bed.

  9. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 6:58 am

    Top Ten!

  10. djmitcho November 18, 2008 7:00 am

    top ten?

  11. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2008 7:01 am

Oh, by the way Stretch, I won’t make the UH-Idaho State basketball game.

  12. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2008 7:02 am

Hey, I think something’s wrong with my computer. I sent out post No. 11 at 9 last night (wink, wink).

  13. Stretch November 18, 2008 7:03 am

another thing about last night, with the small crowd, there was no traffic control after the game. There was a hige backup trying to get onto University Ave. Lucky I was able to turn around and go to the back King St exit.

Last night’s crowd was pretty good for only 2,033 people. How come all the students don’t come out for all the games?? There was a different energy when they are there.

  14. djmitcho November 18, 2008 7:04 am

Good Morning Everybody! Though I didn’t stay up for the whole game I did watch the first half. Even though the team pulled it out, they got a lot of work to do. And I do mean ALOT! IMHO, the players need to move towards the ball more instead of standing around and waiting for it. With some time, I hope Coach Nash can figure out a way to beat a zone d, or it will be a long season.

  15. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 7:05 am

    myki,

Heard Coach Miano on AM1500. He cut his interview short because Mack called a mtg; probably about practice today – sounds like you may not be missing it today after all.
Hoping that the concern for “tearing up the field” doesn’t have to compromise the team’s ability to prepare adequately for the game.
Do budgetary concerns factor into a decision of this kind? Is there enough grounds staff to address issues like this?
Obviously, having Ching Field available would be nice but just asking about how things work under existing circumstances.

  16. Stretch November 18, 2008 7:05 am

ST – well I guess you do need your beauty sleep.

  17. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 7:08 am

Really hard to understand all the scholarship rules.
How would an early admit like Billy Ray factor in?

  18. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2008 7:08 am

    Stretch:
I needed to get up early. SJ isn’t monitoring practicing for me.

  19. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2008 7:11 am

I think Billy Ray Stutzmann won’t be coming in until the fall, which is good. I mean, while it would have helped him get a head start on learning the offense, I really believe people need to enjoy their high school senior years. Graduations, proms, funny teachers. Without those, what are they going to talk about on Facebook in future years?

  20. Stretch November 18, 2008 7:11 am

ST – yeah, okay. Just make sure your boy makes it to school on time.

  21. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 7:11 am

Looking at the 3 September games, maybe skipping the “home” part of the home and home with UNLV in ’10 would mean a bonus trip to LV at a normally “slow” time for Sin City?

  22. myki November 18, 2008 7:12 am

Stretch–I totally agree with you about the atmosphere last night. It was great having the students there. It looked like they were having fun. I haven’t had a chance to watch our recording of the game. I’m curious as to how the ESPN crew viewed the game and crowd.

See you tonight. Have a great day on Liz’s land.

  23. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2008 7:12 am

By the way, I think Stutzmann would count toward the 2009 class because his high school class doesn’t graduate until June.

  24. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2008 7:14 am

Yeah, I’m not sure I understand why Vegas would want to come to Hawaii. They don’t bring any fans.

  25. Stretch November 18, 2008 7:14 am

get one lame babooze on 1420

  26. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 7:14 am

    Stephen,

Without those, what are they going to talk about on Facebook in future years?

If he is like my two sons, all he’ll talk about is, “How the “h*ll did they lose to Iolani?”

  27. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2008 7:15 am

    Stretch:
One of my fellow bloggers said to me yesterday that this blog is easy to write because “all you have to do is go to practice and watch.”
    I’m thinking: Go to practice?

  28. Stephen Tsai November 18, 2008 7:22 am

    Hey, Stretch, they canceled practice.
This is what is called a win-win situation.

  29. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 7:22 am

    Stretch,

    Isn’t that a lame, sleep-deprived babooze?

  30. Stretch November 18, 2008 7:24 am

ST – no practice but get your boy to school ON TIME. I am sure Wena would appreciate that.

    d1 – yup. at least I am only sleep-deprived

  31. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 7:24 am

    πŸ‘Ώ no practice again…
I hope the team can benefit from mental reps or something. UH needs to be sharp on Saturday.

  32. bb November 18, 2008 7:26 am

There was definitely a different type of atmosphere in the arena last night. For only a little over 2000 there there was a little more “attitude” in the air. The athletic depart NEEDS to get more of the students in the arena for the games that start at regular times.

The dance contest during halftime needed more skin.

  33. Stretch November 18, 2008 7:29 am

the dance contest was lame. I was watching more entertaining dancing in the stands.

  34. mctruck November 18, 2008 7:31 am

beer and karaoke would bring mo fans….bwaaaahahaha!!

  35. jm2375 November 18, 2008 7:44 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Congrats to the Bows on their win. I made it till about 8 min left in the game, then da eyelids wen get really heavy.

Heard c_c on 1420. Sounded fairly coherent. Prior to that, Coach Gerke was interviewed by Scott Robbs. Could we cut out about half of the “you know”s, please? Kinda irritating.

Stretch – no let your head hit da keyboard! Oddawise, make sure you get your hard hat on! πŸ™„

  36. Mrs. A-House November 18, 2008 7:45 am

    Good Morning!

    First things, first.

I was deeply saddened to hear on the blog and last night’s newscast the circumstances of the passing of Luke Nishikawa and three of his close friends. All very fine young men. Those who knew them will cherish the precious years spent together. I’m slowly understanding how powerful the saying…”yes, mourn the losses, but celebrate their lives”…

  37. jm2375 November 18, 2008 7:48 am

Good morning Mrs A-house! Howzit, long time no see.

  38. Mrs. A-House November 18, 2008 7:51 am

    DPK –

My deepest condolences to you, Sweetie and your children on the passing of your ex-wife. The blog is here to provide you with means to express your emotions. As Stephen says, this is a family-oriented, not just sports-related blog, so use it, if you need to. Friends are an important source of love and strength. I know because you all have been there for me.

  39. chawan_cut November 18, 2008 7:54 am

another thanks to the cancer (HF)for having no field to practice on today.
can’t wait to have the new domo-turf field as an alternate rainy day option.
and thanks jm2375. i was amazed i woke up today too. good thing i won’t be at the desk long and will be on my feet. it’ll keep me awake all day.

  40. Mrs. A-House November 18, 2008 7:55 am

    On a brighter note…

I’m always happy to wish (belatedly, sorry) Diana and Sweetie a very happy birthday. Good wishes provide loving thoughts whether it’s before, on the day, or after the day. Continue to take good care and look forward to many, many more happy birthdays!

  41. chawan_cut November 18, 2008 7:56 am

actually, i just realized what i wrote about cancer and its not a thing to joke about with everything that has happened the last couple of days.
    i am sorry.
    i’m tired. i don’t know what i’m saying.

  42. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER November 18, 2008 7:57 am

    chawan_cut,

Stay away from any red buttons today!

  45. Mrs. A-House November 18, 2008 8:06 am

    Pomai –

Your post #188 yesterday was awesome. It reflected my thoughts exactly. I mentioned to A-House a couple of times over the past few days that Coach Mack should emphasize to the Warrior team NOT to believe what Ferd Lewis’ column tries to portray…that at least two of the next three games are push-overs. Please, please, Warriors, take maximum intensity and focus into every one of the remaining games…one game at a time. As Ex-Pat posted, a team overlooked is like a rat in a corner…it will come out fighting for survival and become an imposing and dangerous adversary.

Go Warriors! Stay focused…win…one game at a time!

  46. Mrs. A-House November 18, 2008 8:07 am

    jm2375 –

Thank you for your special greeting. Good morning to you, too!

  47. Stretch November 18, 2008 8:13 am

forgot to mention that A-Joe joined me, my mom and Sleez last night/this morning.

  48. Mrs. A-House November 18, 2008 8:13 am

    Ronnie –

Our family is sooooo happy and relieved that you, your family and your house was spared from the fierce fire. A-House reported to me that you took what was most precious to you…your children and your Sugar Bowl ticket. I was confused at first when I heard that. Sugar Bowl ticket? I thought. That’s over, isn’t it? Duh…I get it…we, too, have our Sugar Bowl tickets preserved in a special photo album. The 2007 Perfect Season and invitation to the Sugar Bowl…wondrous memories and mementos we, too, will treasure forever.

Thank you for representing last night/this morning to cheer the team to victory. I’m totally impressed that you all have the stamina and endurance to take on the invitation to “be there” in the midst of a work week. Stretch, you amaze me how you can get by on a couple of hours sleep and catch an early morning flight and “expect” to be productive. Youth has its hugh advantages…for sure.

  50. Mrs. A-House November 18, 2008 8:21 am

    Sorry,

    hugh = huge

  51. koakaneβ„’ November 18, 2008 8:21 am

morning tsai-ko kane’s and wahine’s kinda chilly so put on something warm and some hot kope or coco helps.

congrats to cnash and the bball team. sorry to say turned tv off after 1st half cause was disgussed with their play….way to many turnovers (10 or more) and inept play of offense. but hey they pulled it off so congrats again.

ESPN showed very little shoots of the crowd in the 1st half so could not make out the crowd. good to hear a lot of students made it and supported the team.

l8tas all have a good day

  52. Mrs. A-House November 18, 2008 8:26 am

    Chawan_cut –

We caught glimpses of you at the Fullerton game behind the basket in your bright orange jacket. It helped jinx the free throw shooting for the opponent. Thanks for buying such a weird-colored jacket to help the team. Anyway, be kind to yourself and rest as much as you can.

  53. wena November 18, 2008 8:28 am

Condolence to the Nishikawa family. We are all sadden by our friend Lukes passing. He went to the same school that our daughter Allie graduated from and those roads are windy and pretty steep.

  54. XxFaithxX November 18, 2008 8:29 am

    Good morning peeps,

Congrats to the Men’s BB team on their first win…..may there be more on the way (trying to stay positive here…)

  55. Jay November 18, 2008 8:38 am

Good Morning Tsaikos. Lots of coughing and sneezing in the office. I better get some vitamin C stat.

  56. Kekoa November 18, 2008 8:43 am

Mrs A-House ~ I must say that you do have quite a collection of memorablia! Anyone who has had the opportunity to take a ‘gander’ at her special Post cards’ will know what a true fan does to support their team.

Mrs A-House is the *Mother* of all UH fans!

  57. jm2375 November 18, 2008 8:49 am

Howzit Kekoa! Did you treat your better half like royalty on her b-day? Wait, I think I’m asking da wrong person. I should ask da Mrs. hehehehe

    What’s the latest?

  59. Bulla November 18, 2008 8:53 am

good morning Tsaikos on a wet and wild day,

be safe out there, drive with aloha, and be a blessing to others.

    GO WARRIORS
    GO WILDCATS (X2)

  60. takoboy November 18, 2008 8:54 am

    mornin ever1

so according to varying reports, according to coach mack we got approx 22 recruits, 19 of which have been publicly reported, and 3 (Nobriga, Tepa, and GDL) are wavering. should be very interesting in the next week or so and on LOI day. sure hope da rain lets up and da team can practice later today.

  61. MeiLing November 18, 2008 9:01 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Thanks for the tickets, ST! I gave the other one to a happy fan.

The Bows need more work, but they didn’t throw as many errant passes last night as they did in Friday’s game. Glad they could pull out a win. Got to see my godparents last night at the game; so nice to be home.

    Esme & out…

  62. kapakahi November 18, 2008 9:10 am

    ST…

Of these five or so prospects expected to attend Idaho game, how many are expected visitors from mainland (hopefully the Long Beach, CA area)?

    Mahalo!

  63. madeinhawaii November 18, 2008 9:10 am

    ST,

How’s Steele Jantz doing? Any chance of him earning a scholarship next year?

  64. madeinhawaii November 18, 2008 9:14 am

Practice cancelled because Ching/Cooke field isn’t completed yet, eh? Too bad. If only someone hadn’t thrown an unneccessary wrench into the process. grrrr… I just hope it doesn’t have a negative affect on the outcome of Saturday’s game.

  65. letsgowarriors November 18, 2008 9:15 am

we have 6 greyshirts from last season, i hope all can count towards last season. but it all depends on how many initials we gave i suppose.

    kainoa lacount
    christian vasconcellos
    earvin sione
    alema tachibana
    art laurel
    kalua noa

  66. letsgowarriors November 18, 2008 9:19 am

oh and how many seniors on scholarship graduate in december.

  67. madeinhawaii November 18, 2008 9:24 am

BTW… when is the estimated Ching/Cooke field completion date, now? Has the turf arrived?

  68. djmitcho November 18, 2008 9:51 am

Couldn’t the FB team practice on the turf in the baseball stadium? As long as it isn’t being used, I don’t see a problem with that.

  69. madeinhawaii November 18, 2008 9:58 am

    djmitcho…

You would think so, wouldn’t you? Especially in the outfield, where there’s no interruption to the turf. Are the specs the same though? I mean different cleats and such.

  70. Mrs. A-House November 18, 2008 10:04 am

    Kekoa –

Hi Kekoa! Thank you for the kind words. Believe it or not, my Mom instilled in me the importance of capturing memories in pictures, postcards and memorabilia. What documentation you leave your descendants will be your legacy for generations to come. To this day, I marvel at the pictures of the first generation of immigrants in the late 1800’s, my parents’ generation, my generation and now my children’s generation. Everyday, I give thanks for who I am and what I have due in huge part to the hard work and sacrifices of my ancestors. I am truly grateful and take nothing for granted.

  71. (Jesse) James November 18, 2008 10:06 am

Good morning Tsaikos and Tsaikettes…just wanted to say good morning…busy day….

    Esme and Whoosh….

  72. Kekoa November 18, 2008 10:14 am

jm$23.75 ~ What’s cookin’? Is there a speshu T-gate dish for us to sample on game day?

  73. djmitcho November 18, 2008 10:18 am

    mih,
someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it’s the same stuff that is being laid out on Cooke/Ching Field. Basically, the team could wear their game shoes on the turf.

  74. Kazz November 18, 2008 10:18 am

Whew what a night! What a morning so far. I’m on my first shot of 5-Hour Energy with another bottle waiting for me after lunch.

The UHAD should be proud of the fans that came out last night and they should be proud of themselves for all the promotions they held and for the discounted tickets they offered as it seemed to help considering the late night start time.

The first thing I noticed was the amount of people in the 18-29 age range that showed up both in person and vocally. This was the closest thing I can remember to a true college-type atmosphere at the SSC in a while. I ran into Chawan and Jason in the student section and the bottom line is that whether there are 50 of them or 500 of them, they are the lifeblood of emotion in the SSC.

I also saw a large group of more Maniacs sitting behind the UH bench, and another, what looked like a frat, sitting facing the UH bench. Plus add in other larger groups of younger fans arriving together to sit behind the Idaho State bench and you’ve got a very loud and lively crowd.

Maybe it was the fact that it was on ESPN, maybe it was the reduced ticket prices with general seating, maybe it was the Manoa Maniac promotion before the game, or maybe it was the late night start time on a weeknight in which most younger people are out, but whatever it was, the 2,000+ in attendance was louder than ANY 4K+, 5K+, or 6+ plus crowd at the SSC than I can remember. To see all of this is almost better than watching our first win this year happen in overtime.

Mahalo to Chawan for clearing up the “Aloha Oe, Aloha Oe… SIT DOWN” chant for me yesterday. I also want to thank Idaho State for giving us the opporunity to use it 3xs as they had three players foul out last night!!!

JD and Johnny Mac were there last night and I hope they took notice of the crowd participation last night.

While I am no longer a student, those that are should really start coming out as they can make all the difference in the world for that “6th Man” advantage.

YO! UH STUDENTS!!! ESPECIALLY THOSE DORMING ON MANOA!!! TAKE BACK THE SSC!!!

  75. Stretch November 18, 2008 10:19 am

    Re: Murakami Stadium

I would think they can use almost the whole field since the only dirt is at the pitchers mound and home plate. Everything else is turf.

If I recall correctly, I think the football team practiced there last year or sometime before.

  76. Stretch November 18, 2008 10:25 am

What is the cost for basketball season tickets and individual games for students?? I think it was free for them last night. I wonder if really reduced rate tickets would entice them to come more often??

  77. Postmanke November 18, 2008 10:27 am

Gotta love Lasha and his heat checking from 28 ft. I have to admit it is fun to watch. – shades of Gavin Smith.

Although i think he should wait to launch from back there until hitting 2 or 3 in a row.

  78. Kekoa November 18, 2008 10:31 am

    Mrs A-House ~

What makes your albums standout is your willingness to share with us your personal insight while “in the moment.”

Your care and concern shines thru. Your celeb neighbor is learning a lot from you. Keep up the good work, it makes it easier for Wena to keep him ‘focused!’

  79. madeinhawaii November 18, 2008 10:33 am

Stretch… didn’t they practice on the baseball field before the turf was replaced since it was all beaten up, anyway? Now that it’s new… I dunno…

  80. Stretch November 18, 2008 10:36 am

Punahou wants to practice on UH’s grass field in preparation for the State tournament?? They are some pretty smart guys. They come over to UH, tear up the field when UH can’t even practice, and leave their grass field all nice and pretty??

  81. Kaimuki Kid November 18, 2008 10:38 am

There is no interuption of the turf, because infield dirt is actually turf. The only dirt is the pitcher’s mound and home plate. The field is designed to drain quickly so it would be an excellent place to practice, except no lines.

  82. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 10:44 am

    Stretch,

I think they are practicing at UH ’cause of their multudinous numbers of soccer teams that have taken over their facilities. Those Puns take their futbol seriously!

  83. madeinhawaii November 18, 2008 10:46 am

    Stretch..

Punahou gotta keep the field nice for picture taking sessions with Sports Illustrated and ESPN.

    Kaimuki Kid…
No need lines when got duct tape, eh?

  84. madeinhawaii November 18, 2008 10:48 am

But then we wouldn’t want our Warriors to confuse Touchdown with Homerun, eh? Hmmmm

    re: Lasha

I was saying the same thing when he was launching from way out yonder. It was a lil mind boggling at times but I’m glad they won.

I gave him a new nickname, Lasha “ParkingLotta” Parghalava, because he be shooting from the parking lot.

  87. IjUsThEaRd November 18, 2008 11:18 am

Uh no practice on the field, but we let Punahou! WHAT THE…..

  88. Jason November 18, 2008 11:19 am

So my sister came by with her youngest daughter and son today. She wakes me up at 9:30 and asks, “When do your classes start?” I said, “Half an hour ago.” πŸ˜€

Great game last night, great atmosphere. Sorry to those that I missed as I was doing the shout-outs β€” I was looking for you all!

We need more “11 pm crowds.” Raucous, loud, and energetic. I loved the group of students behind the UH bench β€” I’d like to see something like that at all UH sporting venues from now on, where there are groups on both sides of the field/court to cheer.

  89. Stretch November 18, 2008 11:24 am

Jason – I could tell you were getting into it. I seen you dancing in the stands when the music was playing.

  90. Kekoa November 18, 2008 11:24 am

Cheyah! #86 – Make me fall down laughing! Reminds me of wen *Bird* and *MJ* would shoot from off the roof, off da next building, over da freeway, off da lamp post…nothing but NET!!

  91. Jason November 18, 2008 11:53 am

Hey, I like sitting next to the band. You can really hear the different instruments before everything blends together. I really like that. πŸ˜€

Okay, gotta get ready to go. I still have my 1:30 class. And I need to pick up the take-home exam for the 9:00 class I skipped this morning. πŸ˜›

  92. lab rat November 18, 2008 12:11 pm

Looks like ESPN got the contract for the
    BCS bowl games after 2010.

No place to practice. Sad. Hasn’t really rained that hard today.

  93. jm2375 November 18, 2008 12:13 pm

Hmmm, I wonder what the absentee rate is for UH classes today and how many “I went to the game last night” excuses were legit. πŸ™„

  94. Kazz November 18, 2008 12:19 pm

Can’t we send Punahou to practice over at Kanewai Park?

Hmmm, I wonder what the absentee rate is for UH classes today and how many β€œI went to the game last night” excuses were legit.

Honestly, if the attendace truly was at around two thousand then I think at least anywhere between 500-900 students can use that excuse. It really looked like that last night.

It’s funny because I cannot get over how many students came out last night and how loud they were…

Again, it’s been a LONG time since I’ve seen that kind of genuine enthusiasm at the SSC. The thing to remember is that the basketball team was 0-2 going into that game so it’s not like a bunch of “fair-weather fans” showed up.

Also I don’t think it was ESPN being the sole factor in it. It had to have been a combination of things that Jim Donovan and John McNamara will have to study. Because considering the late time, there was “MANA” in the air last night and you can’t manufacture that kind of energy, BUT you can do things to influence it.

  96. Postmanke November 18, 2008 12:37 pm

Cheyah! you just coined his nickname – thats so Berman-esk, too funny. He’ll be forever known as “ParkingLotta”

  97. al November 18, 2008 12:40 pm

    punahou to practice at uh?
is that a bridge being mended type scenario?

seems to me that we have the fewest of punahou alums who can claim to have played for the warriors in the years past.

i applaud kimo makaula for being his own man. welcome aboard young man.

  98. FloridaTed November 18, 2008 1:00 pm

    Hi, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Finally back home. Boy, having no internet for almost a week really sucks, almost like being in the desert.

Lots to catch up, tons of news, sadness and joy to read, just like darn life.

My thoughts are with all who have hardship right now.

Gotta read plenty to catch up the next few days. Aloha to all of you.

  99. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 1:02 pm

  100. FloridaTed November 18, 2008 1:03 pm

I hope the Warriors will go all out the next three games, take no prisoners and make an exciting stretch run. The Fans will come.

See ya laterz, on my way to my writers meeting (2x month).

  101. al November 18, 2008 1:06 pm

d1….true. the ones from punahou who have come have made an impact. hopefully, miah’s time will come soon.

thompson, morgado, kaaihue (kapono), hemmings, tuinei, et al.

  102. al November 18, 2008 1:10 pm

fla ted………i forsee a three game sweep! make that a four game sweep to closeout the season.

i don’t believe in bachi. so i will go on record to say this.

we will end with a 9-5 record.
that will be a great record for a team in transition and a great start for the mack era.

what a way to lead us into the next season. hmmm. i can’t believe we are on the last third of this season already.

  103. Cheyah! November 18, 2008 1:11 pm

Kekoa #90- Now thats a classic. One of my favorite commercials of all time with two legends. As for Lasha, looks like were gonna have to live or die with the parking lot shot. Hopefully, he moves in a lil closer and shoots from the concession stands instead.

  104. FloridaTed November 18, 2008 1:12 pm

What’s everybodies assessment of the BB Team sofar?

  105. A-House November 18, 2008 1:12 pm

    ST:

Good point by others – why can’t football team practice at Murakami Stadium on rainy days unitl Cooke Field is completed?

Are they really going to change the name to Ching Field? I think Cooke Field at the Clarence TC Ching complex sounds really nice. Like, ST at the Honolulu Advertiser.

  106. FloridaTed November 18, 2008 1:15 pm

    Al,

I absolutely share your sentiments about our stretch run. Anything else would be a real surprise and only if they take anybody lightly, but I doubt that BigMack or the Seniors will let them do this.

  107. lab rat November 18, 2008 1:25 pm

You have to practice to win games. Having a place to practice should not be a concern for the coaches. Especially when they are at home.

  108. XxFaithxX November 18, 2008 1:30 pm

RE: FB practice when its not sunny.

JD should talk to the boosters about donating for an INDOOR complex………..then no mata if it rain or not, yeah?

  109. XxFaithxX November 18, 2008 1:36 pm

Also, when MACK wants to hide stuff from spies, they can practice in there. Now if you ask me where on campus it can be built, that is a whole ‘nother story.

  110. XxFaithxX November 18, 2008 1:37 pm

So thats like a 2 bird, 1 stone kind of thing, yeah? Make sense to me…/shrug

  111. XxFaithxX November 18, 2008 1:41 pm

  113. Committed Road Warrior November 18, 2008 1:43 pm

    XxFaithxX:

Speaking of indoor facilities, at a cost of $8 million, Arizona State built a “bubble” over their practice football field which opened in early August prior to the start of this season:

    http://www.azcentral.com/sports/asu/articles/2008/08/09/20080809asufbnb.html

Unfortunately a bad monsoon storm swept through Metro Phoenix and destroyed the facility about 3 weeks later:

    http://www.azcentral.com/sports/asu/articles/2008/08/29/20080829spt-asububble-ON.html

  114. madeinhawaii November 18, 2008 1:52 pm

Those huge warehouses accross the street from Walmart in PearlCity look like they could house an indoor football field, and then some. Too bad they are so far away.

  115. madeinhawaii November 18, 2008 1:53 pm

Hmm.. the NBC… doesn’t that arena have the necessary stuff to transform it into an “arena football” field?

  116. Postmanke November 18, 2008 2:00 pm

I like the Indoor practice field idea. $10-15 million to build a 110 yard facility. few more million for a L.E.E.D certified facility. JD you can do it! would reap benefits in image and recruitment as well.

just shut down the AC and crank the heat to double as Hot Yoga studio for after practice conditioning to help limit player injuries. unlimited uses.. Lasha’s personal basketball dungeon to work on his 60 ft three point shooting…

  117. Postmanke November 18, 2008 2:04 pm

Would they consider a container indoor field? atleast hurricane proof?

  118. Pomai November 18, 2008 2:32 pm

ST – you going to be at the afternoon practice??

  121. Mrs. A-House November 18, 2008 2:54 pm

    Jason –

Hi again Jason! Nice chatting with you in the drizzle on King Street. Folks, Jason missed his 9:00 am class, ate his breakfast/lunch as he waited for his bus, BUT he’s convinced last night/this morning’s game was all worth it. Thanks for the invitation to join you next time, but….

Lasha, forgive me, but in the heat of the exciting game action, I referred to you as…”go Panos…drive Panos…yeah, Panos scored!” By mid-season you will be a household name and will have endeared yourself to me and my ohana. Good luck to the 2008 Rainbow Warriors as you all work hard to establish that special “chemistry” and build your own dynasty.

  122. XxFaithxX November 18, 2008 2:59 pm

Cooke field has been declared dry enough to practice on today.

Pomai (#119) I dig, but isn’t it sad that that was not thought of when they planned it and so maybe the Ching foundation would have paid for half of the price?

  123. ryan November 18, 2008 3:07 pm

Does that mean there is no Call the Coach tonight?

  124. Ronnie November 18, 2008 3:19 pm

    Aloha Tasiko Family!

It’s good to be home! Now, if only the smell of smoke would go away…

My deepest condolences to the Newell and Nishikawa families.

DPK, my heart goes out to you too. We will keep you all in our prayers.

  125. Ronnie November 18, 2008 3:22 pm

Happy belated birthday to Diana πŸ˜€ !

  126. Jason November 18, 2008 3:28 pm

Hehe, indeed, I ran into Mrs. A-House on King St while waiting for TheBus. πŸ˜€

Speaking of 60-foot shots, the big game last night was a giveaway of a trip to Las Vegas. All you have to do is hit a layup, free throw, three pointer, and … a half court shot. Surprisingly, quite a few people got really, REALLY close. Alas, no one won. πŸ™

  127. Ronnie November 18, 2008 3:33 pm

Here’s another great article by J. David Miller about how the Warriors did better against Florida than the South Carolina Gamecocks.

    “Warriors Fare Better than Gamecocks”

The score, as you’ll recall, was 56-10, Florida. And wow, did the pundits come out to play. Granted, it’s easier to get a job as a radio talk show host in America than it is to get a degree from a Caribbean Med School, but even still, the abuse of Hawaii was horrific.

Hawaii didn’t belong on the same field with Florida, they said.

You can’t compare a WAC team to an SEC team, they said.

The Gamecocks, with the nation’s third best defense and ranked 24th in the country, roared into Gainesville this past Saturday and were handed the worst loss of any Spurrier-coached team in history.

When the bludgeoning finally ceased, the tally was 56-6, Florida.

Now, I hate to go off on a rant here, but isn’t that four points less than Hawaii scored against the Gators?

Isn’t South Carolina an SEC team, not a WAC team?

  128. Rob25 November 18, 2008 3:47 pm

    Hi Ronnie!

Thanks for that….not that it makes taking the loss any easier, but hey give us some credit for hanging in there. I didn’t watch the game, but did Florida pull out most of the first team by the end of the game. Nice to have someone stick up for us every now and then.

    Sure am tired!

Did the boys have school today?

  129. Rob25 November 18, 2008 3:48 pm

Hey Jason…did you catch the bus home last night or did someone give you a ride?

  130. djmitcho November 18, 2008 3:48 pm

    Gotta love J. David Miller!

  131. Izzy November 18, 2008 4:00 pm

This week in Washington is the “Apple Cup” (UW vs. WSU). Here is what we can look forward to in Washington:

    Combined records : 1-20
UW : only winless D1 team
WSU : about to break NCAA record for point allowed

Infact, at 5-5 UH has more wins that the Puppies, Kittens and Sea Gulls, combined.

  132. Izzy November 18, 2008 4:01 pm

    Happy 80th birthday Mickey Mouse!

  133. Ronnie November 18, 2008 4:04 pm

Yep, the boys were in school today. I saw a cool picture of the fires taken by a NASA satellite.

I bet you are tired… Those all nighters are getting harder and harder to do πŸ˜‰

  134. djmitcho November 18, 2008 4:04 pm

Izzy, its more like the Apple Sauce Cup Pillow Fight this year.

  135. Long Time UH Fan November 18, 2008 4:06 pm

    Ronnie,

Good to hear that you and your family are OK.

Thanks for the J. David Miller article…

Florida also routed #4 LSU 51-21, Kentucky 63-5, and #6 Georgia 49-10; all SEC teams including two powerhouse highly ranked teams…

  136. Bulla November 18, 2008 4:11 pm

    xxfaithxx,

#111 regarding Sai, good luck to him and hope he does well. never reached his potential at SL for various reasons, and didn’t play in the SL vs. Puns game last week. hope all is well; he’s a big kid and has the size. i think the knock on him has been motivation and technique, but he is big. Utah is probably banking on the upside, like John Wooden used to say, ‘you can teach them to play, but you can’t teach them to grow…..’ or something like that.

stay dry everyone, and to all the Tsaikos under 120 lbs., be safe out there with this wind. whooooooooooooooosh, not an Esme, just the wind.

  137. Jason November 18, 2008 4:13 pm

  138. al November 18, 2008 4:26 pm

    ST…….today’s “johnny-come-lately” after thought.

when you say “…at least five prospects who will be attending Saturday’s game against Idaho.”

are these five prospects who have not verballed yet?
or includes some who have verballed already?

if so, then how many are new prospects?

  139. Bulla November 18, 2008 4:28 pm

    al,

you’ll know come game time on saturday night. don’t pressure ST, he has many important things to take care of right now….like they say, easy tigah……….

  140. al November 18, 2008 4:28 pm

i would venture to say at least one safety will be here and hopefully one running back prospect will also be here.

at least that is my hope.

  141. al November 18, 2008 4:29 pm

bulla….i think st is napping at the moment. he’ll catch up with sj/myki later on the practice info.

    har, har, har.

  142. Bulla November 18, 2008 4:31 pm

    al

just kidding, put the full court press on him, he can’t handle the pressure, and he’ll look for the outlet pass super early, haha

and then we could also run the trap on him, if he decides to go side to side…knowing Pride is covering the hole deep on the back side, we should be able to make him turn it over

    what do you think….

  143. al November 18, 2008 4:31 pm

hey, bulla….so this saturday will be only your second game this year at the aloha?

  144. Bulla November 18, 2008 4:32 pm

    al,

what a life, to be an accomplished journalist, to have a loving wife and wonderful kids, to have a loyal somewhat ‘cult-ish like’ following, and to top it all off, he can take a nap in the afternoon………WOW πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

    now THAT is living…

  145. Bulla November 18, 2008 4:33 pm

    al,

oops, headed back to Ogden again, the play E.Washington, last regulare season game……gotta follow the dream.

  146. al November 18, 2008 4:34 pm

but, i think he could run away from pride. better put homey back there instead.

just a thought while we are at it. if the oline consisted of bulla, d1, pride, dpk, bighilo, and jd can you imagine the damage they could do with homey running behind them??? eh, no one could find him until he was in the endzone.

he could run in back of them or create a new play by running under their legs as they lined up behind each other.

  147. al November 18, 2008 4:36 pm

okay see you guys. give the beast a hug for me eh? at least you might be able to wrap him up.

  148. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 4:39 pm

Eh, I’ll be there for the pre-game meal. Actual game play? That’s another story!

Have a great rip Bulla. You going up for the play-offs, too?

  149. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 4:40 pm

    😳
    rip=trip

  150. Bulla November 18, 2008 4:41 pm

    al

i was thinking of having homey run up behind me, but i am not scheduled for that medical exam just yet, in six months i think. come to think of it, homey is pretty dark already….ok, that’s enough….this tangent is pretty crappy and starting to smell. my apologies ST, al started it.

  151. Bulla November 18, 2008 4:41 pm

    d1

i was wondering about that rip

Al — on your line, don’t forget the youngsters: WreckinEyez and Addahknowjoe. Gonna need all the big guys we got, even though we haven’t seen them at the trough lately,,, πŸ™‚

  156. Bulla November 18, 2008 5:10 pm

i would defer to the both of the young’uns……with wreck’s tail, he could really whiplash the defensive line, turn his head quickly, and WHAPAAAAH, the right side of the Defense is out of commission, haha

now for ajoe, buggah would be doing his denny terrio dance moves and slipping and sliding by all those linemen to attack the LB’s and DB’s, downfield blocking…..big time!

it’s a new game nowadays, not smashmouth football, more deception and trickery, just ask Boise State……

  157. al November 18, 2008 6:01 pm

and that bb game did the boys good. although flemings is scoring in the double figures nightly, i believe he is still not comfortable just yet. it could be his ankle is still a bit tweaked.

but, you can see the potential. i hope his outside shot returns soon, because this team needs someone to fire consistently from outside.

adams is starting to show why they wanted him to play this year. guy has got some hops. i thought he should have gotten the lob on the last play because everyone was keying on flemings.

another full year of recruiting will prove to be the key to the return of the program.

  166. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 7:43 pm

    Howzit djmitcho,

Yep. No doubt the size in D3 has definitely stepped up since you were playing.
    UH averages 6’3″, 300.

  167. d1ε³Ά November 18, 2008 7:52 pm

    OL for top-ranked Mount Union averages 6’4 1/2″, 286.

  169. chawan_cut November 18, 2008 8:07 pm

    mrs. a-house,
thank you for your kind words. i wanted to wear that sweater last night, but unfortunately, it was the same color as their jerseys. it will return next game.
kazz, you’re welcome. glad you could join in with that chant. hope you had fun in that section. you can see why we sit there all the time. and i agree with you. hopefully the students that were there last night show up the rest of the season.
didn’t have a chance to see stretch or the others. sorry, was kinda focused on the game and the crappy refs. and then afters we all just headed to our cars as fast as we could.

  170. chawan_cut November 18, 2008 8:09 pm

    d1,
no worries, there’s no real red buttons that i could push.

  171. Kazz November 18, 2008 8:26 pm

    Chawan,

It truly was an honor for me to be able to sit in the section that I took for granted during my time at Manoa. It also was awesome to join in on that chant. (Seriously no joke and no sarcasm at all, I mean it!)

Man I swear, no matter how tired I am right now (still in the office) it was all so worth it.

I didn’t stand up the entire game like some in the section but I didn’t care that my view was blocked during some parts of the game. I was just happy to see the student involvement being what it was last night and I was just taking all that in.

Looking for some help in “off-topic” item.

Our DVD/VCR recorder/player is busted, but all the stores carry the new DVD recorder and or player. VCRs, they say, are a thing on the past and VHS tapes are so obsolete.

Problem is that the Coaxial tv cable coming out from the wall will not “join” in with the “new” machines – must use a converter cable box to act as an intermediaty between TV and the recorder/player.

Any one know what’s the best way to solve this problem? Repair shop tells me that it’s way to expensive to fix the laser beam part of my old recorder/player, but with having to buy a new player/recorder and the “cable box”, it may be cheaper to just fix the old machine.

Oceanic TV will “rent” me a cable box for about $11/month for life – now, that’s a lot of kala!!!

Our problem is that all of us that have the “co-axial” cable and want a recorder/player machine will be faced with problem forever. Companies have stopped making machines with the “co-axial’ cable port/terminal on the recorder/player and now concentrate on DVD machines exclusively.

We are now attempting to transfer all the past UH games in football, basketball, volleyball, and baseball to DVDs. Unfortunately, some of our very old tapes dating back to the 1990’s are all “kabe” and cannot be cleaned. Just like the “beta” tapes that we discarded.

    Thank!!

    A-House,

What about switching to Dish or DirecTV? Their DVRs are great and make it easy to burn stuff. Or, you can get a DVR from Oceanic and then you won’t have to worry about the coax problem.

Wanted to say Thank You again to Jim Donovan.

For those who remember, he donated use of his box as a prize for the Tsaiko Anniversary Party. He designated this upcoming Idaho game for the Tsaikos. Initially Coach Mack’s ticket was pulled but I don’t think he would be able to use it since he has more important things to do during the game. The next raffle ticket pulled was ST’s future son-in-law.

I wonder if ST was invited to sit there??!!?? Did I say future or ex son-in-law??

Texas just designated their defensive coordinator to be their next head coach. Mack Brown isn’t expected to retire anytime soon (he has HUGE monetary incentives to stay for at least 4 more years), but they didn’t want him to lose him. Pretty good deal for Muschamp–he’s the defensive coordinator for not even a full season and now he’s assured to be the next head coach at Texas…and while he’s waiting, he’ll be paid $900k to be the defensive coordinator! He’s just 38 years old and is set financially and in his career.

  192. SteveM November 18, 2008 10:08 pm

A-House — I ran into the same problem earlier. The newer units are “digital” and cannot accept the old-style signal as indicated by the coaxial F-type connector you describe.

However, the new DVD/VCR units can independently play DVDs and VHS tapes when connected to your TV through RCA (red, yellow, white) cables (I’ve seen your TV and know this will work). However, since you cannot connect your Oceanic coaxial cable from the wall, you cannot go through the DVD/VCR unit to control and record. You must connect the coax straight to your TV and select input source.

On the other hand, the Oceanic digital service and cable box will work and seems the best way to go, especially after Jan 15 next year. My mom just got the digital box last month (mostly for her Korean soap operas). Run the box signal through the DVD player/VCR to the TV…but have to leave the player on at all times, otherwise gets too complicated for my mother to switch inputs. I still use the analog through my Road Runner wiring. I’ll worry about my TV later πŸ™‚

Many here have the digital service and the DVR recorders and can tell you more.

The BCS powers were not happy that Obama wants to push for a playoff.

“I am extremely delighted that he is our president and excited that he is going to lead our nation,” Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe said. “I am disappointed that there isn’t more full discussion before he comes to a conclusion on this. I would hope only that the leader of our country would take under full consideration all the aspects.

“The simple solution is easy to state. We’re not in charge of a professional league where we have the entertainment value to consider. That should be fully considered. This isn’t something you should make a rash decision about.”

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany told the New York Times over the weekend: “I think it’s that time of year. Whether it’s the president-elect or college football coaches or fans debating it, the First Amendment is alive and well.”

“Certainly it’s an important issue for college football and colleges. Where does it stand in the list of challenges we have in America today? I would say it’s not very high.”

Obama’s comments have added weight not only because he is about to become leader of the free world. His vice president has been a strident BCS critic. Around the time the Senate Judiciary Committee convened hearings on the BCS in 2003 Joe Biden called the BCS system “rigged” and “un-American”.

  194. Garret November 18, 2008 10:10 pm

Interesting that the MWC wants the top 8 teams in the BCS standings be the ones selected for the playoff.

Craig Thompson is commissioner of the league largely considered the best outside of the BCS conferences. The Mountain West has as many teams ranked in the AP top 25 as the ACC (three) and one more than the Big East. Utah could clinch its second BCS bowl in four years with a victory Saturday against BYU. However, the Mountain West does not have an automatic berth for its champion.

“I guess my question for the president-elect is how are the eight (teams) determined?” he said. “If it’s the six automatic qualifiers and two at-large, no, thumbs down. If it’s the final eight in the BCS rankings, thumbs up.”

Utah is No. 7 in the current BCS standings and would be selected in Thompson’s “final eight” model. It probably wouldn’t be selected as an at-large team in an eight-team playoff that included six automatic qualifiers.

Bess would have had his best punt return of the season…but it was called back for a holding penalty. On the other punt he received in the game, Miami was called for another holding penalty and a big run by Bess was wiped out!

Since I’m on special teams, which coach Tony Sparano gave me a tongue lashing for criticizing on Monday, let me point out Charlie Anderson got hit for a holding call on Davone Bess’ biggest punt return, his second holding penalty in two weeks. On Bess’ second punt, a 23-yard return, Jason Allen was called for holding, bringing the play back.

And that a family of four (I think) won the helmet, and the two kids were fighting over it. One kid had it on, and the other was grabbing it by the facemask. 15 yards! πŸ˜›

A lot of talk was about recruiting. Of the things I remember, Mack noted that they’re looking at some JC offensive tackles to bring in, and that they are looking at kickers to bring in. They said they don’t over-offer like Arizona and other schools who offer hundreds of kids, but they have offered 35 guys, most of which are local boys and kids from Sāmoa, and now they have 22 commits. There will be five recruits at the Idaho game and five recruits at the Washington State game.

And … that’s all I remember for now. Check Sports Hawaiβ€˜i, they get guys with better memory than me. Or listen to the show again tomorrow at Noon.

Oh, and for my fellow 49er fans, Mack said the reason why the 49ers aren’t going to be good for a while is because management insists on dumping salaries that get too high. He cited when they cut Jeff Garcia, Terrell Owens, Garrison Hearst (although I thought he wasn’t the same after that injury against Atlanta in the playoffs); the team was all rookies and young players after.

(Mack was talking about how Jake Ingram just needs a shot to get a long career in the NFL, but that teams will be a little more wary to take a look at a rookie long snapper because many of the guys currently working are veterans. Bobby Curran responded that the teams should consider the salary cap, as a veteran would command a $1+ million salary versus $300,000 for a younger player. Mack then went on to talk about his time in San Francisco.)

  217. Jason November 18, 2008 11:02 pm

Actually, Owens was traded. But yeah, getting rid of the high-salary guys.

And how could I forget β€” Mack talked about Blaze. First, he mentioned how it was just a fluke injury, that Blaze was practicing form tackling with Cal Lee when he went down like “he was shot.” Mack compared it to when former 49er Julian Peterson blew out his Achilles just dropping back into coverage. But then Mack said that because the NCAA recently changed its rules, Blaze does not have a redshirt year. As he was a non-qualifier (not sure if he meant partial qualifier, but this is how he explained it), Blaze’s clock started when he went to HPU, and that he gets his extra year only if he graduates (I thought you had to progress “significantly” toward your degree; not sure if that’s the case or not). Mack said the only reason Blaze would get a medical redshirt is if the injury lasted for two years. So they are really trying to get him ready for next year. (But at the same time, I think if they can get him for a couple games, then let him play them out β€” he can’t get that redshirt anyways.)

    Hehe, this is pretty interesting:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgetown_Hoyas

The University admits that the precise origin of the term “Hoya” is unknown. The official story is that at some point before 1920, students well-versed in the classical languages combined the Greek hoia or hoya, meaning “what” or “such”, and the Latin saxa, to form “What Rocks!” Depending on who tells the story, the “rocks” either refer to the baseball team, which was nicknamed the “Stonewalls” after the Civil War, to the stalwart defense of the football team, or to the stone wall that surrounded the campus.

In 1920, students began publishing the campus’s first regular newspaper under the name The Hoya, after successfully petitioning Rev. Coleman Nevils, S.J., Dean of the College, to change the name of the young paper, which was originally to be known as The Hilltopper. By the fall of 1928, the newspaper had taken to referring to the sports teams (then called the Hilltoppers in reference to Georgetown’s geography) as the Hoyas. This was influenced by a popular half time show, where the mascot, a dog nicknamed “Hoya,” would entertain fans. Dean Nevils’s former school, College of the Holy Cross, also refers to the term “Hoya” in one of its fight songs, as does a third Jesuit school, Marquette University.

Big East and other opponents, whose schools tend to have more concrete nicknames, have long used “What’s a Hoya?” as a chant to mock Georgetown. Marquette University, whose fight song is “Ring Out, Ahoya!” will often taunt the Georgetown basketball team with the phrase “Wring out a Hoya.”

HOYAS are evergreen climbing vines or shrubs growing to 1-10 m (or more with suitable support in trees). They have simple opposite leaves 5-30 cm long that are typically succulent, and in many species are flecked with irregular small silvery spots.

I cut two classes today, convinced that extending my sleep for three hours would help me. Yet here I was in class this afternoon, trying hard not to fall asleep. Then again, I always struggle in those after-lunch classes. πŸ˜›

Oh – no wonder some “Hoyas” have to sneak around late at night causing trouble…. πŸ˜€ 😯 πŸ˜†

  244. SteveM November 18, 2008 11:42 pm

las vegas — we thought about you last Saturday. Recalled the first karaoke call when there was you with the 6 of us too shy to sing in the open lounge in February. We’ve come a long way…I’m not much better, but we got some Tsingers now! I look forward to you leading us back in a few months…

  245. brew808 November 18, 2008 11:46 pm

Okay – looks like we’ve chased the “what”ever evergreen climbing shrubs away…. And I’ve got about 2375 years of beauty rest to catch up on…. Cya! πŸ˜€

    ~β€’~~~β€’~~~~β€’~Go…Warriors!!!~β€’~~~~β€’~~~β€’~

  246. las vegas November 18, 2008 11:48 pm

    SteveM,
That night was great! It was a nice break from
    watching my mom slip away.
Me and Mrs look forward to seeing/hearing you sing.

  247. Kekoa November 18, 2008 11:49 pm

Brew – Another definition of “Hoya” is “what” or “such.” Yep, I agree, not much to go on. They say the long version of the greek word leads reference to a stonewall. Insurmountable obstacle or some “such” nonsense. Who knows?

  248. Jason November 18, 2008 11:52 pm

I’m off to bed, too. Got a test tomorrow, and a homework assignment for Thursday that I’ve got no clue how to do. Good night! πŸ˜€

  249. jm2375 November 18, 2008 11:53 pm

    HOYA SAXA!!! GO GU!!!

Never heard that Marquette taunt because Marquette is LATE COMER to the Big East!!!

One particular Big East school was almost as bad as Fresno. I remember Syracuse fans throwing oranges at Patrick Ewing (Sr). No class!!! Plus I remember Boeheim throwing chairs around, a la Bobby Knight. Syracuse is one of those teams I will always root against. You know, like the Yankees, the Cowboys, BY-who. πŸ˜€

  250. SteveM November 18, 2008 11:56 pm

las vegas — yes, wished your return home this year and next were under happier circumstances. Hopefully it was and will be a bright spot in your visits.

…and you know all this Karaoke Call stuff is all your fault, right? πŸ™

  251. Kekoa November 18, 2008 11:57 pm

What really makes you wonder is why they have the bulldog as their mascot! Some say the original mascot was a bulldog named “Hoya.”

I say give Homey a chance to donate his Poodles to a University as Mascots!

Ladies & Gentlemen, Boys and girls! I give you the Fighting Poodles of Eastern Paduka University!

    I know…I know…I’m heading off to bed…G’nite!

  252. jm2375 November 19, 2008 12:00 am

BTW, what are you so-called macho types doing watching Ace of Cakes on the Food Network?:

  253. al November 19, 2008 12:02 am

mih…..don’t forget that some from this year could also be greyshirted. so if we add that alleged recruit safety, running back, and a couple of jc tackles we would go into innovative recruit placement status.

    keep em coming!

  254. jm2375 November 19, 2008 12:07 am

Homey’s been AWOL from the blog for a while. Time to send out a search party? πŸ˜€

  255. jm2375 November 19, 2008 12:34 am

OK, I’m turning off the lights in the clubhouse since I seem to be the last one here.

*turns off lights, sets alarm, gives Homey’s poodles a good head scratch*

    Oyasumina-tsai. Hasta manana.

  256. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER November 19, 2008 1:18 am

    Hey!
    Who turned out the lights???

Mrs. A-House, I can sympathize. I’ve been up for the last 2 nights transferring a bunch of DVR shows to dvd before the machine leaves tomorrow. I finally upgraded to DishHD.

AND today our new solar water heater was installed. Can’t wait to see how it works tomorrow!

Nitey nite! and SWEET WARRIOR DREAMS!

  257. wafan November 19, 2008 4:41 am

Might as well get some work done since I am in my lab. See you all later today!

    A-House . . .

Please check your e-mail for VCR/DVD information you requested.

Good morning wafan and early Hawaii Tsai-kos risers!

Hope the Warriors have practice this morning. Seems dry in Kailua, so hopefully it’s dry in Manoa.

Anyone heard from WDoc lately? I hope she is getting rest and DrDoc is recuperating nicely.

  261. Kekoa November 19, 2008 6:49 am

(Struggling to blurt it out)…Good Morning Tsaiko’s!

Jenny’s Pit Bulls are restless this morning. Their greeting for the Opala Truck driver is none to friendly! Grrrr…I think they need a home-and-home game of “Chase the Intruders” with Homey’s Poodles.

  262. Stretch November 19, 2008 7:02 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Feeling much better this morning after getting some sleep last night.

Thanks Jason for the info on the tickets. Do the students need to purchase the $60 package?? What if they want only individual tickets?? Is is still $5??
