The unknown Warrior

You’ve never heard of Joseph Malabuyoc.

And even if his name rings a very small bell, you wouldn’t be able to pick him out of lineup, even though he has the longest hair by a Warrior since Ryan Keomaka.

And that’s OK with Malabuyoc, who has become the house guest who wouldn’t leave.

He’s been cut twice. Coaches can’t  pronounce his last name. Everybody thinks he’s local. He’s one of three internationally raised players. Adrian Thomas and Alex Dunnachie are from Down Under; Malabuyoc is from Up Over (Canada).

He pursued a dream of playing American football. That included playing on scout teams and sitting in the stands during home games.

“I’m not a quitter,” he said.

And coaches started to notice. Two days before Thanksgiving, his name was on the travel roster to New Mexico State, a list posted right near his locker. It was the first time he made the travel roster.

Tomorrow night, he is among 28 Warriors taking the “senior walk.”

“No regrets,” Malabuyoc said. “I’ve had a great time.”

I guess there is such a thing as karma. Avis chose LizKauai as the winner of the Colt DVD.

UH football season is almost over tooooo fast. As a young man, I loved the 3 major sports. But as an old man now, Football is the king. I love the ‘chest game’ aspect of it. It’s fast moving and contact sport. As an old man, baseball is too slow moving, and basketball is so short in hours its over before you know it. I will have withdrawal’s until next season. I wish we had a semi-pro football team or arena football team to fill in between UH football. Don’t get me wrong among you golf lovers but with Tiger Wood’s fall from grace, it’s not as exciting to watch for me. I wish he would have paid more attention to his golf clubs rather to his other club. Unless a miracle happens or a Hawaii loving billionaire feels generous, we’ll never see pro sports ever come here again. Travel costs too high, fans won’t turn out unless team’s a super winner.

    Salvation Army?

  14. Buffoman December 3, 2010 8:07 am

I am a bit worried about the start of the wahine V-ball team. If they do that against UW, they’re coming home. I don’t think they can get away with a slow start as they start hitting the tougher teams.

Playing in a weak conference is great for gaudy records but does little to test one’s mettle. If they fade can’t really balme players or coach, it is simply the result of the environment. Coach schedules tough teams but that’s at the very start. There’s no reinforcement during conference and people tend to fall into a pattern, some not productive.

Watching them against USU was just amazing. They looked like a HS team.

Can’t do it now. The question is, can they get and stay hungry, I mean really get there. We’ll know soon enough.

Could be looking at 3 WAC teams finishing in top BCS 25 and other polls.

  19. RupertDaStupert December 3, 2010 8:15 am

I miss the military in a sort of ways. In Vietnam, my back was covered by fellow soldiers. When the enemy attacked, my back was covered by them and I covered their back. That is loyalty money can’t buy. And you know who your friends are. Back in civilian life, you don’t know who really cares about you “who will stab your back rather than protect it”. I miss the military order giving. In civilian life, it feels lonely no one tells you what to do. I feel disenfranchised. I know it sounds dumb. In a corny sort of way, order giving was like someone cared for you. Like Sgt Carter yelling at Gomer Pyle. He didn’t hate Gomer, it was tough love to teach him lessons how to survive war if he went to war. Like when Mo Moniz yelled an order to Bronson Tiwanek. Only problem was Bronson made a telephone pole out of Mo by stuuffing him into the ground and made him into a telephone pole. Just kidding. Just kidding.

Cool story on the unknown Warrior. So many players who bust their ass on scout team rarely get recognized for their hard work and efforts. They make our starters better.

Wish players like Salter would have this same type of drive and attitude.

  22. NCAA December 3, 2010 8:22 am

The Wahine need to pass the ball better. Looking forward to another great game.

  27. NCAA December 3, 2010 8:39 am

There’s something about losing to Hawaii teams that bring out the immaturity of the opposing coach, latest example is the Portland St. coach.

    Souljah

Guess we serve the same higher up.

  35. NCAA December 3, 2010 9:03 am

    Mr. Souljah,

Maybe immaturity was a little to harsh word. Be that as it may, he is speaking his mind and giving an honest assessment. If I was a coach I’d be more diplomatic and give more credit instead of detailing weaknesses. Here is some of his post game comments:

” I’d say make Kenani [Danielson] handle the ball and, once in awhile, sprinkle some balls to the DS, I think she shanked a few or gives you an overpass, one or two. I think releasing some blockers to both #5 and #14 and make their middles play. I felt like we could’ve handled them if we were one-on-one with the middles, as far as defensively, and I don’t think they respond to the tip very well in the middle of the court.”

  36. (Jesse)James December 3, 2010 9:03 am

HOMEY…If you are around…were you able to get the gizzards???

  40. Bowwar December 3, 2010 9:10 am

    Too Bad about Salter…

SO MUCH talent and wasted by ego, me-only thinking, and a lack of patience. When you play on a TEAM, you gotta remember there is only one COACH and you gotta be willing to work with him to earn playing time. It’s the same thing in life and work, you have a BOSS and you have to be willing to work with him/her (Ayehole or not) if you want to “have a job” or “succeed”. Yeah, you have the option to leave and find another place to “play”, but if you don’t get the BASIC thing straightened out (your head), then you may as well just play in the playgrounds.

Too bad, as we went through this with the other misfit last year…I wonder where that player is now???

  41. Michigan Warrior December 3, 2010 9:15 am

    Gratz, Liz!!!

Morning/Afternoon everyone! Happy Game Day Eve!

Congratulations LizKauai! Sorry to hear you won’t be making it this weekend. 🙁 Get well!

  43. Derek December 3, 2010 9:18 am

I think the Portland St. volleyball coach is something else! Sour grapes. I’m so glad Hawaii sent them packing. From my advantage the game got progressively worse for them. I think after they lost the first game, their spirit were broken. By the 3rd game, they burned and crashed, 25-8. They are what we think they are, just another 1st round victim. Shoji and the Wahine didn’t let them off the hook!!!

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Nice post, Mr. Tsai. Scouts are the unsung heroes on this great Warrior team.

Good fer you, Miss Liz! 🙂

  47. Michigan Warrior December 3, 2010 9:25 am

Here’s more from Portland State’s Coach, Michael Seemann, as reported by Ann Miller in the article, “Wahine sputter, then cruise”.

Seemann attributed it all to his team’s lack of execution, bluntly detailing the Wahine weaknesses and unhappy his team could not exploit them.

“We didn’t think their middles had good lateral speed and in fact they don’t, but our passing broke down enough that it didn’t matter,” he said. “When we were in system we threw a lot of good punches and made them play defense and rallies ensued. Their right-side block was a little undersized and we felt we could exploit that too, but we couldn’t.”

  48. Da Punchbowl Kid December 3, 2010 9:26 am

    44 and 45 –

Das cuz da Tsaikos and the all Warriors fans are da bestesest! 😉

    GO WAHINE!

    GO WARRIORS!

  50. Old Diver December 3, 2010 9:28 am

If I were the coach of a losing team I would praise the winning team because if the winning team was so junk then maybe the loss was due to poor coaching. Just saying……

Echoing the Blog Host’s sentiments from earlier in the week that the Mic Hogs ratchet it down several notches tomorrow night and just leave it what the Senior Walk was early on…a time for the Seniors to feel the Aloha from their fans.

Awards, comments, hugs, “secret whispers” can all wait for Sunday night at the banquet.

Real simple…players and their fans, das it!

    GO SENIORS!

  60. NCAA December 3, 2010 9:58 am

Is Ariel Chun still around? I noticed she wasn’t there for the Wahine VB senior night and it went very smoothly!

  61. Garret December 3, 2010 10:00 am

This article is really interesting, because it sounds like something that could have been written 6 months ago before BSU got its invitation to the MWC. However, this article was written in 2004!

The WAC has stability issues of its own with four members (Boise State, Nevada, Hawaii and Fresno State) hoping someday to be on the Mountain West’s expansion list. Louisiana Tech is perhaps a better fit regionally in Conference USA or the Sun Belt.

Joseph Malabuyoc and the rest of the members of the Scout team do an important job without 30,000 to 40,000 people cheering them on. I’m glad that ST posted about Joseph Malabuyoc.

  63. Garret December 3, 2010 10:02 am

Nice article about the UH players competing in rugby now.

Former University of Hawaii football players Leonard Peters and Tala Esera, and Vai Notoa, who played at College of the Sequoias, are part of that future. Peters has played professionally with the USA Eagles 7s and 15s, and Esera and Notoa were on the USA Select XV that competed at the October Americas Rugby Championship in Argentina.

Peters and Esera work out together daily at Kahuku High and have played for the Tama Laie Lions. Both will be involved with next week’s Game Plan Academy.

“At 28, I’m old to play football but not to play rugby,” said Peters, who plays winger and prop. “It’s not big in the States, but in a couple of years, it’s going to open people’s eyes. It’s the only game that any body type can find a position to play.

“Half the U.S. team is Polynesian and (O’Sullivan) knows there’s a lot of talent in Hawaii.”

  64. Garret December 3, 2010 10:05 am

Nevada doesn’t report tickets sold–they report turnstile counts, but don’t even count all the paying customers that attend the games because some places don’t have turnstiles. SJSU and NMSU report tickets sold to hide how little people are in the stands. SDSU’s official attendance numbers reports tickets sold AND all the tickets they give away for free, no matter if the tickets are used. If UH inflated attendance by 40% each game, they could report 50,000+ attendance numbers!

Turnstile counts differ from SDSU’s announced attendance, which has been an unscientific number that includes tickets distributed but not necessarily purchased or used. SDSU’s announced attendance average in 2010 was 31,814, 40 percent more than the actual turnstile attendance.

    Good morning everyone!

Joseph Malabuyoc… mahalo for being a Warrior!

  66. d1島 December 3, 2010 10:06 am

    Mr. NCAA,

    I think she retired.

But still, I hope we don’t find ourselves waiting around for set-up guys bringing out barricades and rope-offs and mics, etc.

If they just cleared the field right after the game and the Seniors came out like Nelson Maeda and Blaine Gaison did and just greeted the fans around the edge of the field, that would be chicken skin for any recruit to see.

No even need introduce…to the real fans, it doesn’t matter. Starter, or not, they all Warriors.

If the Portland State coach knows all the “weaknesses” of the Wahine, how come he couldn’t beat them. He had sets 2 and 3 to exploit those “weaknesses” yet his team got creamed.

Maybe he thinks he knows the game and wants everyone to think the same. My impression is that he’s just making excuses for his “weaknesses” in coaching. To him I’d say, “Bradda, no talk li’ dat … you only make A.”

For those curious as to the MWC’s chances to become an AQ conference in 2012, someone here ran the numbers for the 2008-2011 BCS evaluation period. Remember, TCU and BSU count for the MWC in that evaluation period, but UH/Fresno/Nevada/Utah/BYU do not count for the MWC.

For the Criteria covering the highest ranked team in the conference:

    1. SEC avg- 1.33

    2. Big 12 avg- 4.33

    3. PAC-10 avg- 4.67

    4. MWC avg- 5.33

    5. Big 10 avg- 7.67

    6. ACC avg- 12.67

    7. BE avg.- 13.00 (put WVU rank here)

MWC is #4 and they only have to be in the top 6 to pass the test.

For the Criteria covering the number of top 25 teams:

    SEC 36 points

Big 12- 32.65 points (90.7% of top league)

    Big Ten- 32 points (88.8%)

    PAC 10- 29 points (80.5%)

    MWC- 26.25 points (72.9%)

    BE- 16.25 points (45.13%)

    ACC- 15 points (41.67%)

MWC is #5 and only needs to be in the top 6 to pass the test. The MWC is ahead of *both* the Big East and ACC in the 2008-2011 evaluation period.

For the Criteria covering average computer ranking for the teams in the conference, the MWC is #7 and cannot get into the top 6 to automatically become an AQ conference. However, since the MWC passes 2 of the 3 criteria (just like the Big East and ACC), they will be going through the appeals process.

Even if TCU didn’t count for the MWC, *BSU by itself* would qualify the MWC for the AQ appeals process. However, to stay in the top 6 in one of the criteria, the MWC needs a second team to end up in the top 25 in the BCS standings every year. Hopefully this year Nevada and UH will end there, since that counts for the 2010-2013 evaluation period.

Note that the final BCS standings that count are the ones *before* the bowl games. So, UH needs to get into the top 25 in the BCS standings after the UNLV game. I’m glad that Arizona lost, as they would have been ahead of UH if they had won this week.

Mac answered this in his show. Since Alex is new to football, they didn’t want to screw up his punting techniques, which are quite good now. Kicking off is a totally different technique….

I remember playing a the last game of the 1979 season. Nelson Maeda say, “Eh, I going take one last look at the field.” He still had his bottom half on and jersey but no shoulder pads. Remember walking out to the bottom of the tunnel, and watching him take a run around the fthe warning track, all the way around. Only people had was a few of the custodial workers cleaning up rubbish and looking at Nelson, thinking, “what dis stupid guy doing, da game pau already.” That was the first senior walk, run, or walk, whatevas.

No doubt the guy has a leg, but it’s different mechanics between punters and placekickers.

I can imagine the timing of your leading step approach to even kick the ball well off the tee alone cannot be learned that quickly.

ESPN might actually give Texas *$15 million* per year for their local TV rights, in addition to the $20 million per school per year that ESPN hopes to give the Big 12. Wow.

If you’re asking why ESPN is close to finalizing a deal to link up with Texas as its broadcast partner for the new Longhorn television network for exorbitant figures perhaps approaching $15 million a year, it’s because the worldwide leader is hoping to use this platform as a way to leverage – with Texas’ help – a deal to acquire all of the Big 12’s television rights that will be negotiated next spring.

  143. Garret December 3, 2010 1:14 pm

This Kansas fan blog talks about Kansas and a few others school possibly jumping to the Big East.

The best scenario and a great option for Kansas if all else fails might be a jump to the Big East with their rival schools. Kansas, Kansas State and Missouri all elect to join the Big East. The three schools allow for a 12 team football conference divided into East/West divisions and a 20 team basketball superconference that only gains credibility by adding three teams currently holding a top 10 status. Can you say basketball juggernaut?

Utah reporter passed along a comment by Nebraska’s head coach about how the Big 12 may add 2 teams soon to get a conference championship game soon. It actually would make sense for the 2 teams to be added in time for the next TV deal…and Utah reporters are following this closely because there are a lot of signs that if the Big 12 expands it may invite BYU.

Pelini says the Big 12 will “probably add” teams and have conference title game again “pretty quick”

I don’t think it’s a complete coincidence that, having seen the Big East add TCU and hearing rumors the Big East may further expand to twelve members, the Big 12 is considering accelerating its timeline for expanding back to twelve. The dilemma is who to add.

Supposedly the Big 12 doesn’t want any more Texas schools, and other than BYU, the non-Texas pickings are slim. Notre Dame is the dream catch but prizes its independence. Prying Arkansas away from the SEC is unlikely. At some point the discussion could turn to Air Force, which would have obvious implications for the MWC (and by extension the WAC).

  159. Garret December 3, 2010 1:49 pm

    HawaiiMongoose,

The leadership of Texas and Notre Dame held countless conversations this offseason when the Big 10 tried to convince them both to join them. The interesting thing is that Texas and the rest of the Big 12 have been pointing out to Notre Dame is that Notre Dame could keep their NBC TV contract with the Big 12 and would have no TV rights with the Big 10.

The interesting thing about Arkansas is that ESPN appears ready to give the Big 12 *more* per school than the SEC gets. Arkansas really benefited in the past from being able to recruit in Texas, and if the money is greater with the Big 12 then that could make things interesting.

I *really* don’t want the Big 12 to go after a school like Air Force because that would hurt UH and the MWC.

  160. Garret December 3, 2010 1:51 pm

I thought that the Big 12 TV contract wasn’t going to be negotiated for 3 or so years and that they would stay at 10 until then. However, I think that HawaiiMongoose is correct and the Big East is forcing the Big 12 (and ESPN) to push for 2 more teams for the Big 12.

So, we’ll probably have the Big 12 invite 2 teams in the spring and have another round of conference dominoes right after the season is over.

  166. kama krab December 3, 2010 2:14 pm

    Howzit everybody,

If Notre Dame was to leave for the Big 12 then that might actually work for the big east in basketball cause they would be back to a 16 team format which would stop them from going to twelve in football cause then the league would be a 19 team basketball conference. Thinks are looking to get crazy again. I’m just happy that UH is sitting on a little bit staple ground for now.

  167. HawaiiMongoose December 3, 2010 2:15 pm

I really wish this scenario would unfold over the next couple of months, and put a stop to all of the conference jockeying for at least a few years:

    – The SEC, ACC and Big 10 stay at 12 members

    – The Big 12 adds BYU and Notre Dame and stops at 12 members

    – The Big East adds Houston and UCF and stops at 12 members

    – The MWC adds Hawaii and CUSA adds no one, giving both conferences 10 members, and they reach an agreement with the BCS for their respective champions to play each other annually for a BCS bowl berth

    – The WAC, no longer at risk of being raided, succeeds in luring North Texas from the Sun Belt and Sac State from the Big Sky, and stops at 9 members (leaving the Sun Belt and Big Sky with 9 and 10 members respectively)

There now, everybody is happy and we can get back to watching and enjoying football and arguing over which conference has the best teams.

    HawaiiMongoose #167,

Sounds good to me but of course as long as there is money to make, there will always be change. Equal out the money (which will never happen) and the craziness goes away. Just as long as UH is sitting at a good seat that is stable, then I’m ok with whatever else happens. Once one leg of the chair is taken, then I will start to worry.

Can’t play two FCS teams and hope for a favor from NCAA

In news that isn’t terribly surprising, the NCAA has denied Arizona State’s request for a waiver that would have allowed it to play in a bowl game as a 6-6 team despite two wins against FCS foes.

  180. Not an Expert December 3, 2010 2:42 pm

The east coalitions does not want the BE and ACC to not be BCS qualified. They have done and will continue to disrupt the chances for the MWC to gain entrance as an automatic qualifier. WAC has been knocked out for now. MWC is losing the decision and hopefully don’t get any more members poached which could knock them out also.

  181. Not an Expert December 3, 2010 2:48 pm

Thompson and Benson fueding instead of working together has helped to cause this scenario. The MWC, WAC and C-USA should of formed a coalition and stick together to increase their clout. These 3 conferences are being divided and conquered.

Very glad to see Jeramy Bryant make Steele’s team. JB has been our most consistent CB this year and was excellent in run support too. Congrats to him.

But Kaniela third team and Vaughn fourth!? No way. Those are the best DTs in the conference. Toss in Haku and Geordan (before his injury) and you’ve got the best four.

And an even bigger disappointment was Kamala Umu getting no mention at all. Over the last two thirds of the season, he played as well as anyone on our DLine. He was dominant. Just wish he had another year to play.

As much as I hesitate to cheer for Fresno State, I’d like to point out that Fresno State winning today’s game would boost UH’s BCS computer points and help the MWC’s chances of getting/keeping AQ status in the next evaluation period.

  222. Steve December 3, 2010 5:58 pm

Thank goodness, Mafua will not be around anymore. With Uiato doing the setting the Rainbow Wahine will have a really good chance of winning a National Championship.

Mafua’s settting is again very erratic, in a very important game. Hoping Shoji sticks with Uiato the rest of this game.

  223. wafan December 3, 2010 5:59 pm

  236. Steve December 3, 2010 6:15 pm

  241. Steve December 3, 2010 6:21 pm

One more game then I will not have to put up with Mafua’s stupid setting anymore. Like I have said before can now look forward to the Rainbow Wahine winning a National Championship with Uiato as the setter.

As I have said from the very beginning of this year, with Mafua as the setter, the Rainbow Wahine will not get out of the 2nd round.

  242. RainbowCliff December 3, 2010 6:22 pm

    THANK YOU cheepono !

I can’t believe what has happen to our WAHINES !

Can I get an update on this two sets down situation vs. Washington ?

Just got in from work !

  243. Steve December 3, 2010 6:24 pm

The one bad thing about Shoji, he tends to stick with his Seniors to long, no matter how badly they are playing. Especially, in the all important position of setting.

  244. Ralph December 3, 2010 6:25 pm

Rainbowcliff, we didn’t pass the ball, serve receive or from a Husky attack. Snap at the break, come out thinking win in a sweep after the break.

  245. RainbowCliff December 3, 2010 6:28 pm

#238 Steve: Did not see the match vs. Portland State just read the

article on their slow start but pulled away. Washington is tough from

the PAC 10 as that conference with USC, Stanford and UCLA are good

volleyball teams. Washington Hitters that I hear from commentators are

    dominating the game.

    UNBELIEVABLE !

  246. Ralph December 3, 2010 6:29 pm

Hitting about 13 per cent, all attributable to bad passing, Hartong with only 3 attempts, and Hewitt with 9. Tough to set the middle with poor passing but without the middle involvement the block will sit and wait for Kanani

  247. RainbowCliff December 3, 2010 6:30 pm

  254. Steve December 3, 2010 6:36 pm

Another stupid set by Mafua. Shoji, take Mafua out, DO NOT let her back into the match. If you have to, yank her by the shirt to get her out.

  280. Steve December 3, 2010 7:00 pm

NO MORE MAFUA, HURRAY!!!! NO MORE MAFUA, HURRAY!!!! SORRY FOR THE REST OF THE RAINBOW WAHINE HAVING TO PUT UP WITH MAFUA’S HORRID SETTING ALL SEASON LONG!!!! NOW DANIELSON, SATELE, HEWITT, HARTONG, WABER, AND THE REST OF THE WAHINE OFFENSE CAN SEE WHAT A GOOD SETTING IS ALL ABOUT IN UIATO!!!! UIATO SETTING NEXT YEAR WILL BE SOMETHING SPECIAL. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THE RAINBOW WAHINE WINNING A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH UIATO AS THE SETTER. AS ROBIN AH MOW MENTIONED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, UIATO WILL BE THE BEST SETTER THE RAINBOW WAHINE EVER HAD.

  281. Doink December 3, 2010 7:00 pm

Really Steve? I just check and you never said anything earlier in the season about the Wahine getting out of the 2nd round. I dare you to post the actual day you said that.

Now that I caught you in a lie, this proves you’re hurting inside and seeking attention. Attention that you lack from your reality that surrounds you. The lack of attention feeds your loneliness.

    Sorry Steve

What does the wahines need from this dissapointing lost

to compete with BIGGER skilled hitting teams ?

  285. Doink December 3, 2010 7:07 pm

No Steve. You said you stated your facts here. You’ve got to show us. You can’t just mouth off false claims off the top of your head.

Too bad for the Wahine loss.

    Still, a great season!

Bravssimo and thank you to the seniors!!!

    Go VolleyBows!!!

  292. whitey December 3, 2010 7:13 pm

Did not see the WAC Championship, but somehow this is not da Wahines I saw before I left. Hard to say where the problems lie, but basically if I was to call it, it is Coach Shoji and Wong responsiblities to prepare the team. For da Wahines, it doesn’t seem to have a true team leader. Could be attributed to their youth of the team.

  293. Steve December 3, 2010 7:14 pm

    RainbowCliff,

What they needed was a better setter, and they do have one in Uiato. Why Shoji did not use her more, who knows. As Robin Ah Mow has stated, Uiato is an excellent setter, with all the tools. This is coming from an Olympic setter, who should know what she is talking about.

  294. wafan December 3, 2010 7:15 pm

Thank you, too to Warrior Malabuyoc and all of the other seniors who contributed in so many ways to the success through their active years as a WARRIOR!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  295. Steve December 3, 2010 7:16 pm

    Whitey,

Do not dispair, you will see a team leader in Uiato, next year.

  296. whitey December 3, 2010 7:19 pm

But the biggest problem for da Wahines is that they got shafted big time by the seeding committee. Why is UW the host when they are ranked lower than da Wahines.??? This has been a major problem in the past and will continue into the future until JD and the WAC start to file complaints with the NCAA. Will they get a better shake in the Big West or MWC, that is debatable.

  297. RainbowCliff December 3, 2010 7:19 pm

#269: Old Diver from my DEVOTED USC folks they should win

as this UCLA team is real BAD with Norm Chow extended contract

being reniged by UCLA board of regents. From hearing sport talk

shows here in LA today that Chow and the DC will not be retained.

I don’t know IF that is confirmend as Norm was just approved

for a two year extension BUT knowing how a STABBER that Rick

Neuheisel is he will save himself first and throw the blame on his

key staff as both offensively and defesively they have really looked

    BAD !

A lot is on the line with both Kiffin and Neuheisel needing this WIN

to keep ALUMNI happy as this cross town rivarly is SERIOUS here

    in Los Angeles !

USC and UCLA Alumni make up the large residents here in LA

REGARDLESS of their won / lost record !

  298. wafan December 3, 2010 7:20 pm

    TD FSU!!!

    17 – 25. 2-point attempt failed.

    Uh-oh.

  299. Steve December 3, 2010 7:21 pm

All of you, if the Rainbow Wahine does not win the National Championship next year, only one person to blame, that would be the Shoji. The Rainbow Wahine’s will have the most talented team they ever had. Plus, one of the Regionals will be played at SSC.

Let me say this right here and now, without even seeing the Rainbow Wahine schedule for next year, that they will go thru the entire season without a SINGLE LOSS.

  300. cocobean December 3, 2010 7:22 pm

Steve. Don’t let the loneliness overwhelm you. It’s what feeds your rage! Fight it Steve! Fight it Steve!!

I know you love Wahine sports. You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t. It’s just that this loneliness you have is fueling your engorged phallic rage and you have no idea how to control it! Now you’re dumping your pain on Mafua. Not good. You’re a better man than that.

Don’t let it get to you, Steve. Fight it!

    Rainbow Cliff . . .

Egads. I forgot about NewWeasal being the fool coach for UCLA.

Yeah, he will eat his own before making any sacrifice.

  305. If I recall correctly, Steve has been banned from the volleyball blogs for his snarky, mean, nasty comments about a student athlete.

Our Stephen rarely bleeps anyone so why not do a Second Best – don’t bother to read what irkalates our Tsai-ko standards.

  308. whitey December 3, 2010 7:27 pm

To be honest, I was not very enthused with da Wahines when the team started to move away from the team to “individual honors”. I started to get back in when they had no “individual” on the team which started about 3 or 4 yrs ago. da Wahines best years have been when they played as a team which had major players, but they did not make it any individual game. Diedra was a team player and had great team mates. So did Suzanne. I like Kanani because she knows it takes a team to win and tries to make sure everyone is playing up. Hopefully with the returning crew and incoming wahines, they will rebound.

  309. kama krab December 3, 2010 7:29 pm

I’m not even close to some of the things Steve has been spewing.

Just out of curiosity, who is da wahine’s strength coach??? of do they have one???? i think that they could truly use some ballet training to help them with their floor movements.

  316. Steve December 3, 2010 7:34 pm

    Whitey,

You are correct in a way. It does take a team to win. When one player hides behind her family, and never once admits to her horrible play, instead mentions how badly her teammates play, it hurts the team. It is never her fault at all. How individual can you get.

  319. RainbowCliff December 3, 2010 7:35 pm

Steve, why do you blame Mafua for EVERYTHING !

You can’t have the record that they have every year and

besides Mafua was the setter last year as they went to the

    FINAL FOUR !

Her SETS could not get lost in one year after 4 years

playing on a high level of Collegiate competition !

I know I don’t see the girls play like you do BUT you

blame EVERYTHING on Mafua and ONE girl cannot make

the team lose as there are many components to a TEAM

    lost !

Give her a BREAK sir as she is just a female student athlete

that is TRYING her best to WIN for your HAWAII and when

they LOSE like this they are HURTING man as you should

have COMPASSION for her and the ladies as they really try

their VERY BEST to WIN !

If your a wahine volleyball fan don’t treat our WAHINES like

this as I am PROUD of them win or lose and you sir should

be PROUD of all of them as they are LADIES a whole different

body and mind set from our men’s teams !

    Always NA WAHINES Steve !

    Nothing less !

  320. whitey December 3, 2010 7:36 pm

  322. Steve December 3, 2010 7:37 pm

  323. greenthumb December 3, 2010 7:38 pm

General observation: A fan supports the team, and supports the student-athletes who compose the team. A true fan recognizes that college athletics is about developing the whole person, and that hate speech is inappropriate. Folks in Boise and elsewhere showed that they understand the role of such fans when they made a Facebook group supporting the team’s kicker.

  324. J December 3, 2010 7:39 pm

The NCAA vacated UH’s Men’s Volleyball National Championship somewhat based on a rule interpretation implemented months after the game was played; but applied retroactively. Now that they keep changing the rules…maybe time to ask for some hardware back…

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=5880507

“Kanter played three seasons with the Turkish club Fenerbahce from 2006 to 2009. He was on the senior club team in 2008-09. The NCAA said in a release Nov. 11 that the university and the NCAA Eligibility Center agreed on the facts that Kanter received $33,033 more than his allowable expenses for the 2008-09 season.

The new NCAA bylaw does allow possible players to play on teams with professionals. But players aren’t allowed to exceed the actual and necessary expenses. Previously, players weren’t allowed to be on a team with a professional without a game penalty.

West Virginia sophomore and fellow Turkish national Deniz Kilicli sat out the first 20 games of last season because he played on a team with a professional.”

I did not see or hear about the game as I got home when the game was already pau. Only know what you bloggers wrote. By seeing the scores of the game, I don’t think I would really want to see it. Steve, please don’t answer as I don’t want to read personal insults.

  376. Curt December 3, 2010 9:23 pm

    papajoe2,

I didn’t watch the whole wahine match but what I saw was terrible. We had lots of trouble passing the ball to the setter. Mafua was scrambling all over the place to get to the ball. Because of the bad passing, we had trouble siding out. It was really un-Wahine like.

  377. Derek December 3, 2010 9:24 pm

I am looking for a word to describle what happened to the Wahine. I know, “INEPT”. It was very painful to watch. They are not a #3 ranked team for sure. In retrospect for the season, you could say that the schedule was very weak. The team did not improve much as the season went on. Too many times, hitters were blocked. The serving was erratic. Other than Kaaihue and Danielson, the digging by the others did not excel. I hope Shoji finds a good libero for next season because Maeda and Griffiths are not cutting it. On the sidelines, Shoji looked bewildered and helpless. Maybe the loss of Mike Sealy hurt the most, because I happen to believe that Sealy is a great coach. Toward the end of the season our blocking wasn’t as good as earlier in the season. The passing was atrocious, it was very hard to believe my eyes. Going into the WAC tournament I thought the Wahine would advance pretty far. After they got swept by Utah St. I had my doubts about making it to the regionals. You just cannot be swept to a team that you beat twice in straight sets during the regular season. That tells you right there that something is wrong and that something has happened to his team. Frankly, it’s a little harsh, but they lost their swagger and their confidence in the WAC championship game. Something in their minds said that they couldn’t do it and go all the way. Even Shoji knew they probably weren’t going too far. He hoped they would, but after losing the second set to UW badly he knew it was the end. Too Bad! Hawaii fans have gone a long time since the last NCAA championship. I wonder if Shoji will ever win another one? It’s just too dang difficult. The most important player on the team is setter. If you have a great setter you have a great chance to win and go far.

  378. Curt December 3, 2010 9:24 pm

    Steve,

It’s not nice to make personal attacks on these student athletes. Take it easy please.

Sorry for venting but I how can you let Steve vent but put my post in moderation.

All I am saying is that the setting was erratic, the passing was erratic, and the team had no leadership.

Sorry again for venting about the lack of fairness here.

  384. RainbowCliff December 3, 2010 9:33 pm

papajoe2: Washington had the girls off balance the entire evening. BIG front girls on the net causing blocks, return of spikes and I can’t believe the service errors that the wahines had.

Kanani was well defended as her KILLER jumps and spikes was handle very well by Washington as that was the first time I saw her frustrated and life less. We were

always playing catch up as the lady dawgs took advantage of any Hawaii errors as

TRY that our wahines did to come back in the last set they just fell short as well as

any more time in the tournament as their season is done.

Pac 10 volleyball was REAL good this year as Washington being 5th in their conference

just gives you an indication of how tough they are and BIG skill strikers on their front

and back lines. Despite the lost the girls tried really hard to come back but Washington

was not going to be denied as they are really a good and athletic volleyball team.

Shoji needs some BIG girls on his front line as the girl Huskies thighs made Kanai look

very small as Washington was relentless at the net causing errors and blocks through

    out the three set sweep.

Steve- that’s not all that you’ve said. You still need to explain your now hollow claims for Mafua’s so called below average performance. If your false statements were just your opinion, then that’s fine. Everyone’s entitled to it. Completely weak. But, that’s OK. We’ve come to expect that from you.

But I really wanna help you here. I would like for you to back up your claims.

You know I’ve been thinking about why Shoji can’t get the trees too. We have proven that we can be a top ten team year in and year out but still we have had a hard time getting those top fifty players on a yearly basis. I know that BCS money talks and mid-majors walk but we are bigger then the average mid-major and have been that way for a long time. I was wondering out loud, why we can not get the trees to commit to us too.

  486. Garret December 4, 2010 4:54 am

Assuming that Nevada beats La Tech (no bowl eligibility for La Tech) and Central Florida beats SMU, these seem to be the most likely matchups for WAC bowl games. There are a lot of attractive matchups…except for Toledo.

I would love for UH to be able to play either of the teams that BSU and Nevada would play…

Vegas Bowl: Boise State vs. Utah

Kraft Bowl: Nevada vs. Ga Tech (BSU could be here and Nevada could go to Vegas)

Humanitarian Bowl: Fresno State vs. Toledo

    Hawaii Bowl: UH vs. Tulsa

  487. Garret December 4, 2010 5:02 am

I think that the Wahine volleyball team’s biggest problem is the pitiful WAC competition. While everyone else is getting better in conference, the Wahine are barely challenged for months. Competitors need competition to reach their peak…consecutive win streaks and having it be rare to even lose a game really hurt a team.

Recruits want to play against top competition. If UH was in the Pac-10, then you’d see the taller recruits and even higher ranked recruits. The Big West should be a step up for UH in volleyball, and will help significantly for recruiting California–I don’t think going to Logan, Moscow, Ruston, and Las Cruces did anything for UH’s recruiting in volleyball.

Washington is a very strong athletic team.

Very evident by just watching the pregame introductions. Those women have spent much time in the weight room.

  507. Kekoa December 4, 2010 6:58 am

BHF2 ~ I waited all nite for my ticket (#119) to be called. Later today I’ll ask AL if there is any way I could move up into your top 5 spot since you won’t be attending the T-gate. Looking forward to making that special delivery of the *Miserables* to a coward.

  508. Stretch December 4, 2010 7:11 am

Did anyone else notice that SMU helmet stickers are the “Eo Na Toa” logo?? I saw it a few days back and figured I would bring it up again since SMU is playing Central Florida now. I wonder if they play any of the music when the team enters the field??

  509. RainbowCliff December 4, 2010 7:14 am

Good morning bighilofan2 and kekoa !

  510. RainbowCliff December 4, 2010 7:18 am

Stretch, always your keen eye sight rises to the occasion. Will take note of

that once Hawaii symbol. You are truly the WISDOM to this blog as I hope to

see you again like I did in Vegas and Louisana as you ALWAYS point me into

    the right direction !

Thank you for your hospitality and recognition !

  511. Kekoa December 4, 2010 7:26 am

It was painful enuff to watch our WVB team go down in defeat. To read Steve’s unkind remarks about a dedicated student athlete was worse. I don’t understand how anyone could disrespect any UH team member.

Steve, if she were your daughter, how would you feel about those remarks? Attacking her is an indirect assault on the family that dedicated much of their time and resources in preparing her to play at this level.

Even da Tsaikettes would take great pleasure in wringing your neck. Imagine for just one minute what her family would do to you! Yikes!!..(false crack, medevac!)

  512. Kekoa December 4, 2010 7:35 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

Anybody watching the Pitt – Cincy game on ESPN?

Pitt in the white unis on the white field almost looks like Boise on their blue field. No can see!

Good luck to the Warriors, especially the Seniors. Thanks for making this a Season to Remember!

  515. RainbowCliff December 4, 2010 7:56 am

Kekoa, ALWAYS a PLEASURE kind sir !

Your banner flag is waving this morning as runners from USC

and UCLA who jog past my home envy in AWED of it’s proud motion !

Warrior Jack bobling his VICTORY smile !

Have a GREAT day as you are truly “THE MAN” !

  527. wafan December 4, 2010 8:32 am

The Reno coach is apparently not the only one who is a bit off center. Their Christmas tree downtown is leaning quite a bit. Apparently it was set up that way. Now that it is decorated it is may be too late to straighten it.

    Hmmmmm, sounds about right.

  528. Kazz via DROID.X December 4, 2010 8:32 am

    The Oregon duck can Dougie.

Besides nothing is worse than seeing a Hawaiian warrior helmet sticker next to a HIDEOUS horse logo.

  529. wafan December 4, 2010 8:33 am

And a great game day Saturday to everyone!

    Go Warriors!

HaaWarrior ~ On the contrary, we’re making lemonade out of the lemons he’s thrown.

  552. d1島 December 4, 2010 9:15 am

Kinda surprised that Brian Griese is putting a lot of the misfires on the SMU QB.

Would the Former Coach really be calling plays where the receivers are running routes a yard shy of the 1st down marker?

Incidentally, that’s where the balls are being thrown….

takes two to tango, esp. in this offense.

  553. Kekoa December 4, 2010 9:16 am

Thanks for the colorful reminders Brew!

I gotta get on my horse and head on out to the T-Gate. It’s our day to celebrate the senior Warriors for the maximum effort they’ve given.

    Haawarrior ~ Peace, out.

  554. d1島 December 4, 2010 9:17 am

Precise route running is prolly one of the biggest factors in the win differential between last season and this one.

Amazing what a little “Mouse” can do!

  555. βρεω808 December 4, 2010 9:17 am

Yup – it’s the play (read) between the WR and the QB that makes the “system” work…. 🙄

It looks like a lot of the material about making money and capitalizing on these sorts of ideas is so basic that every person is doing it, and really the only people making money from it are those selling the information. Can you do a blog post about how you use this to really make money?

I would like to understand more about how you can utilize this to make money online. It seems like a lot of the bits and pieces about making money and capitalizing on these types of ideas is so basic that every person is doing it, and really the only people making wealth from it are persons advertising the information. Can you do a blog post about how you use this to actually make money?

  618. wardrobe December 16, 2010 11:20 am

pink works with black, tan works with pink, but I am not sure if you want to try all three. Maybe pull back on the pink to small items like alarm clock, bookends and such. Tan or white would be the best bet for the rest of the room. If you can paint, try a tan for 3 walls, leave 1 white and any trim white( paint is cheap and if you are renting be sure to ask first). You may want to use a throw blanket and some light decorative pillows on top of the bed to break up the black and try table runners or doylies on top of your cases. But if you are tight on money, Return the comforter and sheets to try something different.Maybe plain black and white will be pleasing, kinda go art-deco.

If it’s facing the living room, how about some baskets to hide the things you need but don’t want to see. I use baskets to hide my nail stuff so it’s there when I need it but don’t have to see it. Nobody knows! If it’s facing the dining room, how about the things you don’t use and that are pretty. Kind of like a hutch. Good luck!

You sure can get a high end multi-surface spray paint from Home Depot– they have several brands with different price points . Also I might upholster the head board as well for a more updated look… its super easy. All you need to do is wrap some foam around it then staple fabric of choice snugly towards the back so as not to show any staples.

Metropolis of Melbourne is amount 1. The depth of their redesign was awesome, and its applications across all media is the two refreshing and functional. I am not sure if AOL meets exactly the same level of usefulness. Positive, it’s a step above the prior layout, but how much additional so? And to what conclude? Well, that is certainly my two cents. Peace.

Syfy detest it or not it is really a a top quality typeface treatment.. the NYPL logo is nice, and I dig the the brand new pfizer mark. AOL is left to be observed as to if it is the best mark. I consider one or two of the worst marks on the 12 months have been notnearly that bad. I d isagree with Kraft I kinda dig that and msn.

Count me as one more man or woman surpr ised you did notinclude pepsi to the ??worst??? l ist and even acknowledge their redesign.Other particular comments. The new Pfizer logo looks sloppy and careless to me. The blue clearspace about the wordmark is uneven. I just like the idea, however the execution is negative. The outdated one particular is tighter.I do notunderstand what you like better about the new Guitar Hero logo. The destructive area between the letters makes it practically not possible to learn for me.As for El Banco Deuno, I do notget it whatsoever. The line breaks appear absolutely jarring to me and remind me of a logo I did for my s ister is line of crafts when I was about 15 (it was the phrase pollywogs??? on two lines, using a hyphen?- ugh).Ultimately, I would like to find out your l ist of Identities that happen to be in desperate require of a redesign. My #1 choose could well be Verizon.
