The show goes on

There usually is a lull during the transition period between when a head coach leaves and  the next one is hired.

This time, the remaining coaches, led by interim head coach Rich Miano, are taking a proactive stance. Miano said the Warriors will “re-visit” every local high school football team in search of talent. Unless told otherwise, they will work to close deals on junior-college prospects. Next week Wednesday is the start of the signing period for recruits eligible to enroll in January.

During the season, the approach was that when a player was injured, the next one steps up. That philosophy is being applied during the transition period.

* * * * *

Lost in the news of Greg McMackin’s departure is that assistant coach Mouse Davis appears ready to move on, too. Yesterday, Davis was packing boxes in his office. He said he rejoined the Warriors last year because he wanted to help McMackin, whom he considers a good friend. Davis and his wife are heading back to their home in Oregon.

Davis is intelligent (heck, he invented an offense), witty and a very good coach. He will be missed.

* * * * *

Cal Lee has moved up to the No. 2 spot on the coaching staff. Look for Lee to be the point man in all local recruiting during the transition period.

Extremely sad to learn of the passing of John Collins, known on the blog as Las Vegas, Rasu Begasu and, of course, Maryann(e).

He was a charming and intelligent man who blessed us with his great humor, wit and insightful comments.

RIP, dear friend.

College recruiting is a year around job. Great to hear the coaches on staff are countinuing that process.

  2. whitey December 6, 2011 6:40 am

    good morning

  3. G-Money December 6, 2011 6:41 am

Hope the search for a new coach moves quickly… but I agree with JD that it MUST be a good fit

  4. whitey December 6, 2011 6:42 am

good to hear that the coaches have taken proactive steps in recruiting. never too late and good luck to them.

  5. Hilo-Warrior December 6, 2011 6:46 am

    Good Morning.

  6. Stretch December 6, 2011 6:47 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Thanks to Mouse Davis for his contributions to the Warrior program.

  7. Woozuuu December 6, 2011 6:50 am

    Please not Miano

  8. Pomai December 6, 2011 6:51 am

Job posting mentions academic achievement/progress three times. Also states the candidate must be able to work with assigned assistant coaches.

I wonder if the “work with assigned assistant coaches” was part of Mack terms for retiring?

  9. ai-eee-soos December 6, 2011 6:52 am

    miano on 1420, now.

  10. koakane December 6, 2011 6:53 am

    good morning

nice to hear the current coaches are still being proactive with recruiting

    mahalo to the mouse

  11. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 6:53 am

Applications already are being accepted. The position is posted on the UH Web site.

Because of the waiver, UH can begin to review the applications Dec. 13, although applications will be accepted after that. Securing a new coach can take anywhere from 10 days to 21 days.

  12. koakane December 6, 2011 6:55 am

morning whitey we thinking the same

  13. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 6:56 am

Donovan said the requirement is that the new head coach interview each of the current assistant coaches. Doesn’t mean they have to be hired, but they have to be interviewed.

  14. ai-eee-soos December 6, 2011 6:57 am

Yup, I agree; we need “local recruiting”.

Cal Lee has moved up to the No. 2 spot on the coaching staff. Look for Lee to be the point man in all local recruiting during the transition period.

  15. Bugaz December 6, 2011 6:57 am

So how does a player commit if he doesn’t know who the head coach is and if the new coach will honor the commitment?

  16. WarriorNY December 6, 2011 6:59 am

Mouse coached 3 of our receivers who are now in the NFL. There goes one of our best recruiting assets. Sigh…

  17. Bugaz December 6, 2011 7:02 am

And how do you know who to recruit not knowing what the next system of play will be

  18. ai-eee-soos December 6, 2011 7:02 am

Miano said some staff will be flying out tonite, to recruit.

from ST’s header: “Next week Wednesday is the start of the signing period for recruits eligible to enroll in January.”

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid December 6, 2011 7:03 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Great to see the Coaches hit the ground running. Players should do the same.

Mahalo to Coach Mouse Davis. A legend with much Aloha for Hawaii, he will be missed.

  20. Da Punchbowl Kid December 6, 2011 7:05 am

    #13 – Wise move.

  21. whitey December 6, 2011 7:11 am

Thank you Coach Davis and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family.

  22. whitey December 6, 2011 7:14 am

Recruiting and life are very similar, you win some and lose some, but both go on. Don’t need to know about the recruits lost, but more about the recruits who will be warriors.

  23. kev-1 December 6, 2011 7:15 am

Recruiting is going to be tough.

We want you to come and play for us at Hawaii.

What kind of offense are your running?

    Umm . . . not sure.

    What about defense?

    Umm . . . not sure?

    gonna be tough for sure.

  24. 12thMan December 6, 2011 7:16 am

We know we all want to see Miano as the successor.

  25. kev-1 December 6, 2011 7:16 am

    faith, faith, faith, faith, faith . . . .

  26. whitey December 6, 2011 7:17 am

Best wishes to JD on his search for a new hc.

  27. chiefgator December 6, 2011 7:18 am

Larry Price was a 1st time HC, I think Dick Tomey was a 1st time HC, Bob Wagner was a 1st time HC, Fred von Appen was a no coach anywhere, JJ was a 1st timer albeit he was a NFL HC, Greg Mack was a first time HC. I hope hope hope they don’t go with a first timer again. And no Rich Miano. Nothing against him but he hasn’t shown anything outstanding as an associate coach. If they are going inhouse, I rather see Nick Rolovich. Norm Chow will probably be lurking around but again, never given the chance as HC. June Jones will never be considered. JD dislikes having to sue $400,000 from JJ. It’ll probably be a guy we never heard of like Rondo Hatton from Claremont-mudd or Elmer Fuddy from Itchy Ball State. I’ll miss Greg. A nicer gentleman you can not find. A royal human being. JJ will probably hire him on at SMU. Mike Tyson is a long shot. He would implememt the Run and Punch.

  28. Stretch December 6, 2011 7:20 am

Miano is reminding me of a politician. Mack retires then Miano is named interim head coach yesterday afternoon. First thing this morning, he is on the tv morning news shows and radio making a case to be the permanent head coach.

  29. Shoko December 6, 2011 7:22 am

Mahalo to Coach Mack. Glad he left the program with dignity rather than getting released by the Administration. Wish him well on his future endeavors.

  30. whitey December 6, 2011 7:22 am

i don’t think the game of football has changed cause you still allowed only 11 men on the field for offense or defense, so putting emphasis on what we are going to play is irrelevent. Basically, you will still have passing and running on offense and the defense job is to stop the other team. let the coaches recruit and we be the mynah birds.

  31. Shoko December 6, 2011 7:24 am

Would Norm Chow refuse if UH offered 1.1 million and a five-year contract?

  32. Slugger December 6, 2011 7:24 am

    Good morning, gang!

I’m going to miss Mouse Davis. I learned a lot from him at the Wahine football clinic. He was always an entertaining speaker at the Na Koa lunches. Maybe we’ll see them at away games.

  33. whitey December 6, 2011 7:28 am

through all of this, we need to remember that the wahine vb is in the ncaa championship and they should be in the spotlight. Go Rainbow Wahines!!!!! love your attitude and tenacity. Give’em!!!!

  34. whitey December 6, 2011 7:29 am

only going say one time and not going give reason, we don’t need norm chow.

  35. whitey December 6, 2011 7:31 am

rasu, another day and hope you are doing better.

  36. whitey December 6, 2011 7:32 am

ok, time for breakfast of champions. have a great day tsaikos and may my friend, sunshine, bring you warmth and happiness.

  37. Jayson December 6, 2011 7:33 am

    #31, Wow, interesting read.

  38. BigHiloFan2 December 6, 2011 7:36 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

I have faith in our team, our leaders. this is the start of a new season.

Thank goodness for Christmas… and faith.

Have a great day gangeez! And,,, I’n keeping the name….

    Go Warriors!!!!

  39. chiefgator December 6, 2011 7:36 am

Rich Miano I believe was a politician. Ran as a Republican for City counsel many years ago. Could this get down to a political hire? mmmmm. If Rich is hired as HC, what kind of offense will he run?

  40. WarriorNY December 6, 2011 7:36 am

    @38,

It seems like Graves is under the impression most of the assistant coaches will be retained. If that’s the case, then it could be a very good thing.

  41. d1shima December 6, 2011 7:38 am

    Great Morning All!

Happy trails to Mouse Davis. If you’re not retiring in Hawaii, Lake Oswego is a nice place to choose as an alternate.

  42. d1shima December 6, 2011 7:39 am

A reinvigorated Cal Lee is a good thing.

  43. Loyd Klicker December 6, 2011 7:39 am

I like this website its a master peace ! .

  44. kev-1 December 6, 2011 7:43 am

#31 . . . WOW! Thank you for posting that. Truly insightful perspective and brave thing for Graves to do. Please people, don’t tear the kid apart for being honest. He sheds light on a lot of what many of us suspected.

  45. d1shima December 6, 2011 7:44 am

Another great day for healing, Rasu. Take care.

  46. FattyMcButterpants December 6, 2011 7:45 am

I’d be very wary about hiring Norm Chow. After the low key Mack, I would prefer someone with a little more fire and personality. And Norm’s tendency to get into these little rifts with others on staff (Kiffin, Carroll, Sark) worries me. Would he keep and develop Rolo as an OC or insist on being the alpha dog HC/OC/play caller?

Kinda hoping we go with someone young and hungry rather than a coach already on the back 9.

  47. d1shima December 6, 2011 7:47 am

    The Price is right!

  48. Da Punchbowl Kid December 6, 2011 7:49 am

That WAS a very interesting read WarriorNY. Thanks.

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid December 6, 2011 7:50 am

Prayers in our morning devotional for John Rasu.

  50. kev-1 December 6, 2011 7:51 am

The kid makes a good point. I think we have a good group of coaches. I have been in favor of a coaching change, but not necessarily a clean house type change. If you bring in an outsider (especially one with head coaching experience) he brings his coaches with them. I guess some people would want that, but I don’t think I do.

Starting to be more in favor of hiring within. But who?

Not really feeling Miano or Tomey. I get laughed at everytime I say Cal Lee. Rolo maybe too young . . . IDK.

  51. Hilo Moon December 6, 2011 7:51 am

To the UH Football Warriors —

I was really moved by your posts that appeared on this blog yesterday. Thank you … you show much respect and aloha for Coach Mac, a truly good person with much aloha and respect for you guys. I may be going out on a limb for categorizing yesterday’s bloggers as fair weather fans and any-kind- of-weather fan. However, no matter what kind of fan, a great majority of the bloggers have much ALOHA and RESPECT for you.

  52. expat December 6, 2011 7:51 am

@42, that is true. Mouse is always welcome to drop by at my house in LO for beer or three. The two big dogs in Oregon 6A football, Lake Oswego and Sheldon, play for the State Championship this Saturday. Both are 13-0. Maybe Mouse will make it back for the game. I hope that some coach from Hawaii will be there. When two teams play for a top level state championship anywhere on the west coast UH should have a recruiter there.

  53. Konaboy December 6, 2011 7:52 am

Very interesting comments from Graves. To me it would explain alot of the head scratching moments this season (seeming lack of focus at times) . That being said MAck was a class act right up to his departure, so I feel bad for him and wish him the best. Thanks Coach.

  54. WarriorNY December 6, 2011 7:53 am

    @49

    No prob.

  55. WarriorNY December 6, 2011 7:59 am

    @51,

I agree completely about the assistants…

  56. tommui December 6, 2011 8:01 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Liked that interview with David Graves – very insightful.

I did not like the DR column in today’s SA which to my mind showed a lack of class and compassion. It may be his interpretation but I don’t think spitting on one’s grave is necessary.

  57. Candy December 6, 2011 8:12 am

Best of Luck and Wishes to Mouse and Family in his retirement. Besides the loss of his R&S knowledge and ability to produce so many fine receivers we will also miss his gravely voice and humor at the Nakoa lunches where he was always a hit.

  58. expat December 6, 2011 8:13 am

I am going to miss coach McMackin as well. I don’t disagree with pushing him out, and I think that he was a much better DC than Head Coach. That being said he was a strong advocate for the players and he assembled a good staff with a great mix of experience and youth. He made some hard calls with coaches when he needed to. He also never took the easy way out. Most coaches would have found a way to gloss over any problems Tyler Graunke was having so that he could play. He did not take the easy way out and I think it hurt his win-loss record his first year.

Our most successful head coach in modern times was an offensive guy. Tomey, Wagner and McMackin were all defensive guys. The biggest challenge for JD will be trying to decide whether to go with an offensive guy or a defensive guy. When Wags lost Paul Johnson it really tanked his program. After the offensive fireworks during the JJ years I don’t know if a pedestrian offense is going to sell tickets.

My biggest concern though is the assistants. Tomey, McMackin and Davis know everybody and you can bet that they will be on the phones making calls to try to place their staff. Some of the local guys might not be inclined to go anywhere; however, the younger guys need jobs and I wouldn’t be surprised if Tuioti and Aranda (for instance) were already getting calls from guys like Mike Leach. If those assistant coaches go their recruits may go with them. Someone like Tuioti could be a hot commodity given his intelligence and ties.

We would be naive to think that all the assistant coaches are just going to sit around and wait to hear who gets hired and then interview and see if they might get picked up. The younger guys don’t have that luxury.

  59. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 8:15 am

McNamara is doing some heavy negotiating right now.

Friday’s Regional is on ESPN3, which is probably a hinderance to the less-savvy-about-computers fans.

  60. WarriorSportsNetwork(WSN) December 6, 2011 8:15 am

    #31

    There u go.

Props to Graves for telling it like it is.

Exactly what WSN posters have been posting about for 4 yrs now.

Glad JD doesn’t listen to the Pollyanna sentiment on this blog and did was was needed to save Hawaii football.

If it were up to most ppl on this blog, MAC would’ve been given an extension.

    What insanity.

Sometimes it’s good to accept dissenting opinion, that’s how improvement happens.

That’s why WSN is THE board if u want to know the truth.

  61. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 8:19 am

    Thanks for the post, WSN.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but we do have a multiple-exclamation-point rule.

    Keep up the good work.

  62. 12thMan December 6, 2011 8:20 am

It is inevitable that Rich Miano will submit his application for HC for which his chances are supreme, given his success since JJ era. He would not showboat his dream of becoming HC on khon morning news. This is real, and it’s perfect timing for him to seize this opportunity. He’s getting older, and who knows how long the new guy will stay if it isn’t him. And honestly, how much money Miano is sitting on is pretty decent, as an associate coach, but the potential salary increase as HC is phenomenal.

  63. Old Diver December 6, 2011 8:20 am

    Re: Cal Lee.

I used to cover the ILH for several years, so I got to know Cal pretty well. And what’s been amazing is how many people he knows. After practices, he sits on the cement bench. There will be random people walking around, and many will stop to chat.

Cal isn’t showy, so his connections aren’t always apparent.

But he knows people, and he knows talent. Since Miano played under Cal, he understands Cal’s value. Set him loose on recruits, and Cal will make an impact.

Na Koa awards banquet photos are up:

  67. rich2176 December 6, 2011 8:28 am

I beleive JD won’t seriously look much further than the current staff to fill the HC position – specifically Miano. He’s been here a long time, knows the players and island culture, and according to Graves, the players have the utmost respect for the assistant coaches. With that being said, why stir up the pot with a bunch of new blood at a much higher price?

Sometimes new blood is good, but I don’t think this is one of those times.

  68. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 8:34 am

Whether Miano becomes the guy or not, it appears to be a good thing there is no idle time.

It was only 10 days between Nash’s dismissal and Arnold’s hiring (he was signed, right?), but there was such a lull with the assistant coaches not knowing whether to continue recruiting or not.

The Warrior coaches are not idling.

  69. Darren December 6, 2011 8:42 am

    Re: Cal Lee

So what took so long? Egos involved? It’s pretty well known that he’s like the godfather of high school football here…

  70. Old Diver December 6, 2011 8:42 am

I remember listening to Rich Miano a few years ago talk about his football philosophy on both sides of the ball. He like an attacking offense matched up with an attacking defense.

  71. Willie December 6, 2011 8:42 am

John L. Smith new head coach @ Weber State. Is this the former Michigan State head coach that was not too nice to Hawaii in the press?

Still can’t figure out why Cal Lee was not involved in recruting the Hawaii players. He has always been regarded highly by the local kids, their parents and fans in general.

  72. RedZone December 6, 2011 8:43 am

If I had one coach to talk to about what is going on with Warrior football right now it would be Cal.

  73. Warrior Expat December 6, 2011 8:43 am

I was one of the people who believed a change in coaching was necessary after this season. I still believe that.

Nevertheless, I hope Coach Mack gets the respect he deserves for the way he left. That was unexpected, not what the vast majority of people — myself included — would have done, and certainly nothing he needed to. I cannot say enough good things about his character as a man. I hope the people of Hawaii recognize this and give him his due.

Without opining on whether Graves should have made those comments to the media or not, I suspect that he will be getting a stern talking to by his coaches.

  74. Darren December 6, 2011 8:46 am

Sad to hear about Las Vegas…best wishes to his family.

  75. PolyMom December 6, 2011 8:49 am

I want to throw this name out. Dino Babers. If you are a long time Warrior fan, you should know him. For those of you who don’t, google him. But his time might be now. Why everyone saying smack things about Uncle Norm? You guys don’t know the truth about USC because he is to classy to talk bad about anyone. Sark gave Carroll the promote me or I am gone. So Carroll promoted Sark, let Chow go and the rest is history. He needed that job to get a head coaching job. Nuffield said.

  76. PolyMom December 6, 2011 8:50 am

We need a bad arz Coach that is young and can bring fresh blood. Period.

  77. HawaiiMongoose December 6, 2011 8:52 am

For better or worse, I think Miano has a pretty good chance of getting the job. Obviously it depends a lot on who else applies.

  78. LizKauai December 6, 2011 8:53 am

Blessings and heavenly condolences to the John Collins ohana. He demonstrated the best of the best when it came to being a Tsai-ko.

  79. Kevin December 6, 2011 8:53 am

    Very confused here….

So according to what Pomai says about the job listing, the new HC has to work with “ASSIGNED” assistant coaches? To me that IMPLIES… HEAVILY implies there will be SET assistant coaches that the incoming H-E-A-D coach must work with.

    BUT

ST says JD asks the future HC to grant interviews to current assistants. So now to me this implies that there is no guarantee any current assistant coaches/coordinators will be retained. If and I say “IF” UH made certain conditions requested by Greg McMackin (AGAIN, I say IF ) then at this time I don’t think it was a very responsible thing to do and already starting out on a questionable foot.

Any head coach coming INTO a program SHOULD reserve the right to hire a staff they feel comfortable with, otherwise you might as well pass on the hiring process and hire your drinking buddies.

When you want to head into a different direction sometimes it’s best to use a clean slate and I think some of us are assuming that is what UH wants right??? A different direction. Right???

  80. Pomai December 6, 2011 8:54 am

New HC – dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t, with our fans. No one they hire is going to please everyone.

  81. Da Punchbowl Kid December 6, 2011 8:56 am

God bless you and your family, Brother John. Very, very sad news.

  82. Kevin December 6, 2011 8:56 am

McNamara’s gonna have to pull a rabbit out of the shot glass on this one, best of luck on that one.

USC vs UH .. Women’s volleyball.. REGIONAL MATCH. Possible near sell-out to a complete sell-out of the BEST volleyball crowd in the NATION.

Oh wait, it’s WOMEN’S volleyball, not a real sport right???

Lord knows ESPN-U MUST rehash the BCS Bowl situations to the point of NAUSEA.

  83. LETS GO BOWS December 6, 2011 8:57 am

please not miano is’nt he the guy that said that this year’s db’s was the best db’s he’s seen at Uh ever since he’s been here (13 yrs)and they could’nt make one INT against san jose, utah st, unlv or fresno st that could of send us to a bowl game this year, that’s why mac is in this position miano’s db’s could’nt make any big plays to win 1 game that would of gave us 7 wins.and now his talking about another 5 star recruit out of ohio i hope he is better then mike Edwards cause edwards was a 5 star and he did’nt do nuthing for our defense this year our local boys who sat on the bench would of done a better job.now his talking about making our local boys top priority for recruiting….way to sale yourself miano…but no thanks cause you are a terribble secondary coach.

  84. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 8:57 am

From a blogger at SportsHawaii.. worthy read and reminder

    sarvicdar wrote:

    Coach Mack,

Blessings to you, your family, your assistant coaches, your players and to all the wonderful UH fans that you have touched along the way.

I will fondly remember your first press conference, everything in between, and bemoan your last.

    You perpetuated high hopes.

You perpetuated optimism, laughter (especially during The Call the Coach Shows) and good cheer.

It was a journey that begged for a better ending, especially for someone that is as dedicated as you were to UH football and to the people of the state of Hawaii.

Some of your indoctrinations as a head coach, here, will undoubtedly bare fruit in the future. Like the neighbor island spring scrimmage games that may lead to inspiring youths to take up football.

    And.

Big man camps. Small tots camp. Junior days. Coaches clinics.

    And.

Your players participating in off season workouts starting with the winter games, and stretching to the player’s summer months involuntary workouts, that purportedly had closer to a 100 players participating. That’s impressive. That’s a good reflection on the head coach and program.

    And.

Your open door policy at the end of the season in which you invited all your players and coaches to critique yourself in ways in getting better.

    And.

Recruiting Samoa, Australia and touching base with every high school in Hawaii. You wing span was even extending out to Ohio and Texas.

    And.

Your emphasises on your players finding success in the class room. And sending your assistant off to NFL camps to experience professional development.

    Outstanding.

Which begs the statement…it seems people only remeber the peripheral things, a name of a player lapse, a time managment miscue, an loss to an inferior opponent, and not things behind the scenes or injuries to key players.

There was a template (sort of like Boise IMO) that you were following that begs of what could have been if it had a chance to ripen more (imo)…i.e., last year’s recruiting class had around 8 players that were not only stars in their league but also stars on both sides of the ball (that’s what I see Boise do, too). Plus the mix of young and older coaches, and the prospect of Ashley and Stutz , Inoke etc. jumping on board in the future.

Today was sad, heart breaking.. I’m not lying. I was in tears when I saw you at the news conference. You were choked with emotions going through your head, mostly I would venture a guess towards the welfare of your assistants and players…and their futures…and their families..

    We say good bye.

We say good bye with conviction, eyes locked, absorbing the true essense of a man that you are…and wish the best to you and your family. The one indelible impression you have left on me, and perhaps a lot other UH fans is that you are a very proud man, a good person, and have the very best intentions in your heart towards UH football. Thank you, Coach Mack.

#80 Kevin – I don’t know if that is the case, just following what Rich posted about the job announcement and wondered if that was part of the terms for Mack retiring. Thinking he was looking out for his guys.

RIP Rasu, my fellow Redskins fan. I will miss your witty repartee.

  95. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 9:08 am

    Kevin:

The assistants are on the payroll until March 31, so it would be prudent to give each an interview. According to JD, the next coach’s only obligation is to interview them. JD does not have any say on the compilation of the staff unless the applicant doesn’t meet requirements. Correct me on this, but there are two classifications: minimum requirements and desired requirements, right? That provides enough wiggle room.

  96. Pomai December 6, 2011 9:08 am

    Another player speakes:

    Joey Cadiz:

Just wanted to say a big MAHALO to Coach Mack… As a player, we’ve all had our special memories with him. For me, Coach Mack changed my life… he gave me the gift of a second chance. That doesn’t always come around, and HE was the one to make it happen. In that second chance, I made the most of what I could and in the end Coach Mack awarded me with a scholarship. He gave hope to all local walk-ons in, NEVER giving up the fight. That means the world to me. Stay strong young WARRIORS… WE ARE ONE…You will never be forgotten Coach Mack… Aloha.

This is a little late but I’m not sure what happened to the blog last night.

Aloha and best wishes to Coach Mack. Enjoy your retirement and if you get the itch to coach again, I know you’ll do your best as you did for the Hawaii Warriors. Take care.

  104. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 9:17 am

When you have a team of more than 100 players, there is a range on the relationship each has with the head coach There’s positive, there’s negative. there’s neutral.

It’s the same with McMackin’s relationship with the media. Most had a good working relationship with him, at least a couple did not. But I think some of it became personal. It’s always better not to let emotions get in the way.

We need to define our expectations. Otherwise, we’re going to be utterly disappointed with the next head coach (and subsequent coaches for that matter).

I can see Pat Hill, Jerry Glanville and Rich Miano making it to the final round of cuts — http://bit.ly/tYIryV

  108. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 9:25 am

Interesting that Graves would sound off on Coach Mack like this…Some of us don’t give a rip about what fans think of a coach, well here is something from a players perspective. Just ONE player, so keep that in mind.

David Graves interview by Bleacher Report

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/970703-hawaii-football-qb-david-graves-sounds-off-on-greg-mcmackins-retirement

“BR: Is there any anger from you or from the players that maybe the “system,” being like the media, led to his retirement; because there was so much heat on him this year, caused from stuff outside of your locker room. Is there anger?

DG: I don’t think there’s any anger at the media…You know…I don’t know…I felt like this team was really led by mostly the assistant coaches; and the majority of the work getting done was by the assistant coaches. And so we’ve expected it, and it was just sad to see him go. Coach Mack was a great man and he really looked after us. But we didn’t know if he was going to be our leader that we needed him to be sometimes.

BR: That comment that you just made could be interpreted in a couple of different ways…

    DG: Which one?

BR: …about the assistants doing a lot of the work. Did that stand out to you as kind of odd that he was in the back too much, or is that kind of typical of a big Division-1 program?

DG: No, it wasn’t that he was in the back. It was just that the assistants really were coaching us, were really teaching us what we needed to know. And I believe in our assistant coaches, I really believe that what they were coaching us was going to get the job done. It was just, I don’t know…It’s tough for me to say, but it just felt like we needed a, I don’t know…Like a stronger leader. Just to bring us all together.

BR: Having a team member to do that? Or an authority figure, like a head coach?

DG: An authority figure. I feel like [Dick] Tomey, Coach Tomey, the special teams coach, he really inspired the team; really, really got ’em to go. And we really would believe in what he was saying. And I don’t know so much how everyone interprets how our special teams did this year, statistically, but from an attitude standpoint, we were definitely a different team out there on special teams this year thanks to Tomey’s leadership, I would say. And he was very strong when he would get up in front of the team. And I don’t know, Mack was just…I don’t know. I don’t know how to say it.

BR: Was there a change in Mack, in what you’re trying to explain, from last year to this year? Or was it the same from the whole time that you’ve been here?

DG: No. It’s from the whole time I’ve been here. I don’t know, we just needed that…

    BR: Fire?

DG: Yeah, we needed a fire! It was…I don’t know…this is really stirring me up to say something like this because I respect Coach Mack. I really believe he was a great man and he really cared for us. But it was just…I feel like it was hard for the team sometimes to respect everything that he was saying when we were preparing into games. Or getting into the true grit of football.

BR: Because he’s too laid back?

DG: It wasn’t the laid back, it was just…maybe his public speaking. He would go off on tangents sometimes, and we would lose sight of what he was really trying to tell us just because sometimes he talks too much.

BR: It’s interesting that you say that because a lot of the heat that he got from the public was from his press conferences, and his public speaking skills. So is it fair to say that when he spoke in front of the team it was the same way?

DG: Yes, yes…I don’t know…Right now, I don’t feel totally comfortable talking about all this but I feel like in a way it needed to be said. He was a really great man, but just the leadership; the person that really needed to grab us together, he wasn’t…Maybe it’s just his public speaking skills in front of the team.”

Awesome to hear about J.T. Turner…how exciting! I’d be excited to watch a tall guy back there.

  119. Dave Reardon December 6, 2011 9:50 am

Tom Mui, thanks for reading the column. Sorry you feel it lacked “class and compassion,” , and of course I must accept criticism if I am going to be critical. But, “spitting on a grave?” Please, sir. No one died. Greg McMackin is leaving with $600,000 of the UH athletic department’s money for services that will not be rendered. Others can throw bouquets at him for not leaving with the entire $1.1 million after having his arm twisted by UH to settle or risk losing it all and possibly having some dirty laundry aired in court. Sorry, I can’t. But … As I pointed out in the column and this morning on Bobby’s show, I respect some of the things McMackin accomplished at UH, especially on the academic side; and he was a tremendous contributor to three WAC championships. Contrary to what many seem to think, I don’t have a personal beef with Greg McMackin, never really did, even when he expressed displeasure with things I wrote. If it were personal, I’d have embarrassed him by reporting many more of the silly things he said over the course of the past four years, many of which made me laugh.

In respect for the vibe of this blog, I won’t engage in what could become heated exchanges this post might generate. But if anyone has questions they can email me. Thank you.

I’m not sure I can take all of the depressing news today.

RIP, John. You were always generous, witty, and willing to host us in Vegas. I’ll really miss you.

The other depressing news I learned today was that a colleague took his own life.

PS – If you click on my link, there are a few web Las Vegas albums with some pictures of John. Thanks for the memories, my friend.

I hope that you had a chance also.

  126. Dave Reardon December 6, 2011 9:58 am

i did not realize until seeing post 121 that a friend of many here did indeed pass away recently. I want to be clear that my reference in 120 of “no one died,” is strictly in relation to Coach McMackin in response to Tom Mui’s perception of me “spitting on a grave,” (which was clearly regarding what I wrote about McMackin).

The proximity of these posts is unfortunate, and my sincere sympathy goes to all who lost a friend, as well as john’s family and loved ones.

d1 – we’ll have to see how tsaiko plans pan out the next time UH plays in Vegas, but I’m still for making memories in his honor. He made arrangements for two of the most important things for our gatherings – food and transpo.

  130. PowderPuff December 6, 2011 10:05 am

Any idea on the “search committee?” I hope JD gets a say in who’s on the committee (I did see that in ST’s article today – hope it holds true) and Mack’s eventual successor.

To the ohana of Las Vegas aka John Collins etc., etc., etc….

My deepest prayers for you and your family at this time of your loss. You know John was a character, and I’m not telling you anything you don’t know. Years ago I was looking for a high protein soup for my son Ryan ‘The Beast’ Eastman, and John gave me a ‘Chanko-Nabe’ recipe.

It was delicious and Ryan actually liked it. He was only in the 10th grade at that time, but it became a staple for his diet. I like to think that John’s recipe played a part in Ryan’s success in football, making all ILH, all State, garnering a full ride scholarship to Weber State and making Honorable Mention all 3 years he has played, and making Pre Season All Conference in the Big Sky in his 2nd year……

That’s how John was, always helping and always making people laugh. When i was on the blog late at night years ago, we’d have joke contests, and he’d always win….such a wealth of knowledge…..

To my friend John Collins, I thank you for your friendship, I thank you for your encouraging word, and I thank you for bringing a smile to this old guy’s face……bless you my friend, i’ll see you on the other side 🙂

  133. Bulla December 6, 2011 10:11 am

    Mahalo Coach Mack,

Although it comes down to what we may say is a ‘business’ decision, it’s still a parting of the ways. Mack is a good guy, just like Bob Nash, but in the business of college athletics, you can be everything good but you need the ‘W’s’ to stay employed.

Coach Mack cared for the academic success of all his players. I know this first hand when Coach Mack and Coach Cal had a meeting with our family. There were some academic challenges that needed to be addressed, and Coach Mack made every resource he had available to insure the success for our son to continue his education. I respect Mack for that, and it was at that moment I knew that he was genuinely concerned for his players.

    Mahalo Coach Mack……

Dave Reardon keep writing and being critical, anyone whether it’s in sports, business, or politics needs to be criticized when the return on investment is sub-par. It’s writers like you who keep people accountable. (No-braddah-braddah garbage) College football is a business whether you accept it or not, if the AD is going to get a .500 ball club then why pay 1.1 million for it, it simply doesn’t make financial sense. The program needs an injection of new blood, enthusiasm, and someone who can get better athletes to come to school in Hawaii. Just because we think this place is the best thing since slice bread doesn’t mean the athletes we offer think so too. We need the to able to hire an African American assistant to go into homes of African American athletes and sell them our program.

  149. al December 6, 2011 10:53 am

#80 kevin…it is how job vacancy announcements are written.

all that states is that the head coach has to be able to manage his assistants.

assistants are hired by athletic director through the recommendation by the head coach.

all assistants’ term ends every march. renewals are by the recommendation of the head coach.

  150. Uce 2 December 6, 2011 10:54 am

Would like to see the HC job go to Miano. He earned it. If not Miano, then Cal Lee. He earned it too. If not Cal Lee, then Nolan Tokuda. He has great skill in winning no matter what clump of clay you give him to work with and no matter the other challenges.

I would love to see Kenny Niumatololo take the post, but being HC of UH would be a downgrade instead of an upgrade for Kenny given the stage he currently plays on.

Chow is a ridiculous choice for this post for all the obvious reasons. The reasons are so obvious to even a blind man that I will not list them here.

What I don’t want to see is another person with no ties or history with Hawaii coming here to coach our Warriors.

Condolences to Las vegas and his ohana.

  151. kev-1 December 6, 2011 10:55 am

haka . . . is it not childish to condemn someone else for allegedly attacking someone elses character, to then attack the character of the very person you are condemning for doing so? That is my only point. You can have different opinions without being so defensive and offensive. Dave didn’t call anyone ignorant or whatever else you suggested.

I enjoy reading a lot of what people have to say on this blog, but there are those that can’t handle others having opposing perspectives and call them “trolls” and other stupid names. Granted, sometimes people come and post weird, plain mean things sometimes too.

He was a big, kind hearted man who would always assist you in any way he could whether it be with transportation, food recommendations, or karaoke fun…John was always there.

Aloha Las Vegas…now you can truly have the best seats in the house and cheer on our Warriors with LTUH Fan, Florida Ted, Mr. Gary Aoki, and Kristen “Mrs. Curveball”…Until we meet again. Godspeed.

So, is the Big East going to change its name to the Big East/West/South?

  154. d1shima December 6, 2011 10:59 am

Wat? B$-You running away from Hawaii again? 😈

And you are such an angel here when you post. Talk about putting words in other peoples mouths. I get it now. Your opinion is better than my opinion of someone elses opinion. I’m sad.

  156. TaeBo Jackson December 6, 2011 11:03 am

All other SD State sports to the Big West?

  157. d1shima December 6, 2011 11:04 am

No name change for Big East…”brand equity” cited. 😆

  158. whitey December 6, 2011 11:05 am

dang big john, will truly miss seeing you and sharing thoughts with you. you are truly a man of all season. now the shamisen will be missing a main ingredient and the karaoke contests will be missing something special. to your family, my sincerest sympathies and we will truly miss a good friend.

Wonder if Petersen thinks the BCS system is bad now that his team is joining an AQ conference?

  162. WarriorNY December 6, 2011 11:11 am

So what are the benefits of playing in the MW now? It seems like this year’s WAC is going to be better than next year’s MW. I wonder if we’d survive as an independent.

  163. TaeBo Jackson December 6, 2011 11:16 am

    d1shima,

  164. al December 6, 2011 11:17 am

better the mwc than the wac?

we actually lose money in the transition. perhaps the mwc and the wac will join hands with the cusa to become the best mid major conference.

lets face it we will dwell in the second tier for sometime until we become the next bsu.

  165. kev-1 December 6, 2011 11:18 am

  166. koakane December 6, 2011 11:20 am

listening to the repeat of the Bobby Curran show and man he is talking up Miano qualities for HC.

Lets see the list of applicants before being head over heals for one guy. Lets do it right cause this will impact the fball program for 4-5 years. Build a good foundation.

  167. al December 6, 2011 11:20 am

    aloha mouse.

so if cal lee is being upgraded and his role is finally being expanded, perhaps, if the opportunity presents itself, a rejuvenated cal lee could scrap his plans of retirement???

  168. kev-1 December 6, 2011 11:21 am

My opinion is mine. Yours is yours. Dave’s is his. You figured it out. clap, clap. I guess there is no need to enlighten you on the ignorance that weighs you down then? (yes, those are your words)

  169. Capitolist/WassupDoc December 6, 2011 11:21 am

Since I cannot afford to go “on the road” supporting the various teams, did Las Vegas ever come to Hawai`i after The Warrior Beat/Tsai-kos group was established? I do not remember meeting anyone new & from out of town who can be decribed as sumo-sized, but perhaps his visit was before I started going to various events here on O`ahu in September, 2007.

For those of you who want to support the Wahine this Friday – and Saturday – please attend the matches rather than watching them on tv. I bought four tickets yesterday afternoon for some folks in DrDoc’s office and was told that there were at least 1500 tickets left. Not all great seats, I’m sure, but the new overhead screen system is incredible.

  170. kev-1 December 6, 2011 11:21 am

Cal Lee was going to retire?

  171. d1shima December 6, 2011 11:24 am

    HI-3, brah!

Eh, how long was Mack working here? 😕

  172. Bulla December 6, 2011 11:25 am

Miano campaigning like a newly elected politician in office. first order of business? work on getting re-elected……sad to say the least. already humping the tv/radio news extolling why HE is the right choice for HC…..look at your title, it says Interim, last time I checked 🙂

all is good, the dust will fly, the dust will settle…..we shall see 🙂

  173. al December 6, 2011 11:27 am

  175. CHEE! December 6, 2011 11:28 am

IMO, opposing QB’s and their recievers really exploited the UH’s secondary. It looked too easy at times. Its like the QB could smell blood; they had our number…Dont’ get me wrong, the DB’s made some plays, battled till the end, and left it all on the field but at the end of the day it just was’nt enough. A lot of game changing/winning plays by opposing offenses were at the expense of our secondary.

Was it excellent play calling and/or player execution by the offense, or was it bad play calling and/or player execution by our defense? I honestly don’t know. Hopefully someone on this blog can shed some light on this. Thoughts?

  176. primo123 December 6, 2011 11:28 am

NO high school coach should be the head coach for UH. Period.

  177. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 11:29 am

Obviously David Graves isn’t all that great at public speaking, too. But his last paragraph has to be weighed into the total picture of what he is saying.

BR: Did you, personally, get emotional in the meeting?

DG: A little bit, yeah. You know, it was real sad; Coach Mack, you know, you said it too, we all love Coach Mack. He’s a great guy and he really looked after us, I really believe that he did a lot of great things for the program. He helped the summer school; I’m going to graduate early, I think I’ll graduate in three-and-a-half years thanks to summer school. And I’ll be able to go onto a Master’s program and get as much out of my schooling as I possibly can, thanks to Coach Mack. And he’s done great things with our APR [Academic Progress Rate], he really focused our team on the grades and keeping us in the classroom and made sure that was our focus. But it was sad to watch him go, he really did care for us. Yeah, I was getting a little emotional. Everyone felt the somber. Felt the sadness. It’s tough, man.

    BR: Thanks for your time.

To me, He sounds just a young man trying to make sense of all that’s happening and justifying it to himself in the best way he can. That’s all.

  178. primo123 December 6, 2011 11:29 am

NO Hawaii high school coach should be the head coach for UH.

  179. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 11:30 am

If Miano sticks.. why do I get a feeling that Ron Lee might be on his way back to the Warriors?

  180. primo123 December 6, 2011 11:31 am

#179 Graves got ahold of himself and finished the interview great. the beginning and middle might have been too truthful……glad he figured it out.

  181. cheepono December 6, 2011 11:31 am

i thought cal lee was supposedly let loose on local recruiting when mack was first hired. wasn’t it cal who convinced paipai and alema to stay home at the 11th hr?

the reins on cal got tightened over the years and that’s why local recruiting has been subpar at best. never understood why he was never “let loose” so to speak.

  182. d1shima December 6, 2011 11:34 am

    Too truthful?

  183. cheepono December 6, 2011 11:35 am

many players will attest to the fact that cal lee is the godfather of the local football scene in hawaii. when he speaks, people listen. no question.

whoever gets hired as the next head coach absolutely needs to keep cal lee on staff AND give him a very long leash to do what he wants in terms of recruiting for UH.

  184. PowderPuff December 6, 2011 11:36 am

Bulla, al, IWWTHM (#174-176)…for reasons you know, I choose not to be opinionated on the blog regarding certain aspects of the football program. That said, I really do hope that JD has a say in the search committee and that they are able to find the best person to lead our beloved program next year and into the future.

“Others can throw bouquets at him for not leaving with the entire $1.1 million after having his arm twisted by UH to settle or risk losing it all and possibly having some dirty laundry aired in court. Sorry, I can’t.”

Reardon, would still like a reply from you regarding your “dirty laundry” reference. Are you going to continue to duck the question, you who have been anointed as the “Defender of Truth, Justice and Liberty” in UH sports?

So let me ask again as clearly as I can: Are you aware of any SPECIFIC dirty laundry involving Mack? On what LEGAL basis would UH have been able to file suit against Mack?

If you cannot answer those questions, your comment is tasteless, ill-advised and smacks of the worst kind of character-assassination. And that is why you are a hack.

  190. WarriorMojo December 6, 2011 11:48 am

Watch Reardon’s going to post and say something like, “There’s always dirty laundry.” Which of course means he doesn’t know anything.

On another subject, I’m a Gravesdigger so maybe I’m biased, but I didn’t really see anything wrong about David’s comments. He’s obviously a very aware and sensitive young guy who was conflicted about the questions he was being asked, but tried to answer as best he could anyway. To me, that shows character.

He might have been better served by not answering the question at all since his answers could have been taken out of context or spun by people with an agenda, but that didn’t appear to happen this time. Better discretion will come with time.

  198. Old Diver December 6, 2011 11:56 am

Job one for a head coach is to sell himself to the administration, sell the program to the recruits and sell the program to the fans. If Rich Miano is criticized for that then any applicant worth his salt will be criticized.

  199. Kaimuki KId December 6, 2011 11:58 am

To all who are interested, if we do go another direction with the offense, we should be prepared for a transition period of at least 3 years as the staff makes adjustmenmts to personel on the team to accomedate a new offense. If we continue with a run and shoot or spread offense or some hybrid of the 2 then the pieces are already in place.

I don’t think that we can afford a complete changing of the guard, the most vocal fans do not have any patience…. Go Warriors !

    Re #196

IF there’s something there, then Reardon should spill it. At some level he’s supposed to be a journalist and reporting news is his job, especially since he’s the only honest reporter in town according to some people.

IF there’s something there that is so controversial or confidential that he can’t write about it, then he should just shut up about it instead of dropping little hints or engaging scandalous innuendo that can never be disproven.

IF there ISN’T anything there, then he’s just making stuff up. Do you respect that? I don’t.

  202. Wes'side Warrior December 6, 2011 12:00 pm

As posted by Rich earlier today on the previous blog,

Ferd wrote this in February 2008:

It would cost Greg McMackin half a year’s salary, $550,000, to leave his University of Hawai’i head football coaching position before the expiration of his five-year contract, according to a copy of the agreement recently made public.

    http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2008/Feb/26/sp/hawaii802260359.html

Why would anyone leave that kind of money behind when it’s due to them legally?

  203. WarriorMojo December 6, 2011 12:03 pm

    Question for ST:

Who decided who the interim HC would be? Was that JD’s call? Interesting, it so.

  204. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 12:04 pm

Maybe Mack should have been like Pat Hill and requested something like $10,000 a month for the next 10 years. UH pays in cheaper dollars.. Mack gets tax breaks and gets interest on his final year pay.

  205. Wes'side Warrior December 6, 2011 12:04 pm

I think because Miano was the Associate HC, so it falls to him chain-of-command-wise

  206. mcb December 6, 2011 12:06 pm

Graves should not have made those comments, but it made me think that I am glad that Tomey was so inspirational. Too bad he couldn’t inspire his STs to execute a PAT as San Jose St and numerous other occasions.

  207. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 12:09 pm

    Per ESPN’s Insider blog

Whomever becomes the next Warriors’ coach has to acknowledge the style of football and culture which precedes him. And, the next coach also has to keep in the back of his mind that the administration did not back June Jones in the past after taking the program to new heights. The school is currently embroiled in a possible points shaving scandal as well. It’s an interesting mix which will make this particular coaching search very intriguing.

“Keep an eye on (former Seahawks’ offensive coordinator) Jeremy Bates, Texas defensive backs coach Duane Akina, and current offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich,” Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com initiated.

Jason Phillips, the offensive coordinator of Houston who has interviewed for multiple openings, should also be considered based on his spread offense in keeping with Hawaii’s run and shoot scheme.

Dan Morrison, SMU’s assistant head coach, also has a strong history at Hawaii having tutored both Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan as the quarterbacks’ coach under June Jones.

  208. kev-1 December 6, 2011 12:10 pm

Graves was just being honest. Whoever asked the questions probed him on a comment he made. He repeatedly said he didn’t feel comfortable talking about it too. Can’t come down on a kid for being honest.

  209. d1shima December 6, 2011 12:10 pm

    Three years?

I hold hope that the next HC can get it done sooner. The Former Coach (hmmm…maybe I gotta think about changing dat one) had it rolling in about 3 halves!

  210. Making Beats December 6, 2011 12:11 pm

#203. Nobody in his right mind would spill the beans and expect to continue to be a “reporter” here in Hawaii. Too small a place to do that. Can we say….”black list”…which would mean…doom for a reporter. His tid bits are just that. Hopefully, it makes you think, there’s aways an underside to the story that you read up front.

  214. primo123 December 6, 2011 12:15 pm

#210. Right.Graves was being honest. I think he realized he was being too honest and had to “coach speak” some stuff. Glad he figured it out or at least I hope he did. He coulda said more, but, was smart enough not to.

  215. d1shima December 6, 2011 12:15 pm

Hmmm….UH wasn’t one of the 12 topix on ATH. PTI up next! 🙂

  216. HawaiiMongoose December 6, 2011 12:15 pm

I admire Graves for his honesty. I saw nothing wrong with his comments. I’m glad he hasn’t learned or isn’t inclined to “spin” the truth to protect anyone’s ego or political agenda.

Trust me, he doesn’t know much more than you or me. His style of writing calls for making inferences. It is a style that implies someone knows more than you, but because of a code of honor is unable to speak frankly about it. WarriorMojo is calling him out on it. That’s all.

  222. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 12:29 pm

All this stuff in the DG interview? If the assistant and associate coaches couldn’t put a fix on it and work with Mack to correct it, then none of them deserve to lead this team, either. We need an HC from outside.

  223. d1shima December 6, 2011 12:29 pm

    MIH,

I mentioned this before but Miano had a falling out with him mid season. They did patch things up. As an assistant you can say something but you can’t win.

  225. rich2176 December 6, 2011 12:36 pm

#204 – The point I made yesterday was that he was receiving $600k vs $550k as stated in the article. However, if he was let go after 3 years or 4 years, it appears there was no buy-out clause for remaining salary – just a flat “fee”.

Since Ferd indicates his contract is public information, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find the specifics.

  226. Cindy n Greg Cee (Cenn) December 6, 2011 12:39 pm

Agree Graves showed poor judgment in making those comments, but I’m sure he will learn for next time. Needs to mature.

  233. RedZone December 6, 2011 12:48 pm

I don’t know about Miano. Mack let all his coaches talk to the media. Miano seems like he is going to do all the talking. Seemed kinda strange how he was smiling yesterday when everyone else was so somber.

  234. al December 6, 2011 12:57 pm

if you knew dg, you would know that he is of great character.

it is because of that and his faith that he could not lie about the subject matter.

  235. Pinkie Rochlitz December 6, 2011 12:57 pm

Very good post with useful information. Great stuff!

  236. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 12:58 pm

If Miano becomes head coach, then the next two seasons will weigh heavily on his and JD’s shoulders. Do poorly and I can see both having their jobs in jeopardy.

  237. NaKoaMike December 6, 2011 12:59 pm

    Na Koa thanks Coach McMackin:

    http://www.nakoa.org/2011/12/thank-you-coach-mcmackin/

  238. primo123 December 6, 2011 12:59 pm

Everyone knows how Coach Mack spoke at a podium. He had the unique ability to ramble. How do you think his team talks came across to the “text me” generation. They all probably was rolling their eyes or falling asleep. But, that’s just Coach Mack. He is what he is.

Graves was tellin it like it was from his perspective.

  239. Wes'side Warrior December 6, 2011 1:00 pm

Concerning Graves’ comments in that interview…

I grew up being taught by the older generations to “never air da BVD’s (or beb-a-dees, or bebs) in public, ’cause you no like da neighbors see da pukas or stains.” Some things are just not for public consumption. Next, people are going to ask what exactly was said during half times in the locker room… and get offended if there were any swear words used. I’ve had my share of good and bad coaches, good and bad commanders, good and bad non-commissioned officers, good and bad soldiers, good and bad employees. Got along with most; didn’t care for some. They all had their good qualities. It’s not my place to air any or every single disagreement of character, habit, or whatever. Hopefully, he’ll learn the politics of this game we call life.

  240. primo123 December 6, 2011 1:01 pm

The FANS need to come out and support the team. Why’d they disappear after the NM ST homecoming game?

If we had averaged 40k in the seats and went 6-7, would we still have retired the coach?

For god’s sake….we just won the WAC last year and went to a bowl game!!.

  241. RedZone December 6, 2011 1:04 pm

mih. I don’t know about 2 years. Today it seems that fans are expecting a quick fix.

  242. Ipu Man December 6, 2011 1:05 pm

The best thing for JD to do is to hire himself…maybe for $200,000.

That way he can keep all the assistants and give them maybe

$20,000 more each coach…Win, win all around.

  243. Ipu Man December 6, 2011 1:06 pm

So JD would draw two paycheck for two hats…

  244. Wes'side Warrior December 6, 2011 1:06 pm

I hope we go after certain coaches, to gauge interest, and not just wait for applications to be filed. I’m thinking that there may be some coaches out there who don’t think they may have any chance at landing the HC job, but might otherwise be great for the program.

Ever since the subject of Coach Mack’s contract came up, JD had to have a short list tucked away somewhere.

  245. Ipu Man December 6, 2011 1:08 pm

And let Miano continue as the head honcho…for

possible future as the true head coach.

  246. WarriorMojo December 6, 2011 1:09 pm

Okay, this is kind of random, but I think Richard Torres will make a great football coach someday. I wouldn’t mind seeing him as a grad assistant for UH next year, if he’s eligible.

  247. FattyMcButterpants December 6, 2011 1:09 pm

Yeah not getting the venom toward David Reardon myself. Misplaced anger IMO.

Glad Miano is grabbing the bull by the horns and taking charge. Beats having everyone staring at each other waiting to be told what to do.

i guy called in to the josh pacheco show and stated that robert anae is a guy who would be very interested in the position. said he was an aquaintance of him.

  249. Wes'side Warrior December 6, 2011 1:12 pm

How many HC/AD combinations are out there in the college ranks? Seems like a conflict-of-interest to be both. It would solve some money problems if it could be combined, though.

Can’t wait to see the list of names over the next week or so.

  250. primo123 December 6, 2011 1:12 pm

maybe….give miano a shot….3 year contract with no buyout clause.

if the committee believes all UH needs is better game management and discipline, then maybe can work with miano and the coaches currently in place and redshirts and returnees coming back. just replace the head coach to see if that was the problem.

if the committee believes that UH needs a new direction and recruiting, then a totally new guy will be in order.

    maybe…maybe….

  251. Hiflyer December 6, 2011 1:14 pm

al – hope he applies for the position.

  252. WarriorMojo December 6, 2011 1:16 pm

I’m lazy. Where is Anae now? I recall Pride. has written glowingly about him in the past.

  253. WarriorMojo December 6, 2011 1:19 pm

    As D1 says, I gugu’ed him:

Robert Anae is the offensive line coach and run game coordinator for the Arizona Wildcats football team. Prior to this role, Anae served as offensive coordinator for the BYU Cougars football team. He holds bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from Brigham Young University, and a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii.

Impressive. I like that he was previously an OC.

  254. LittleBirdie December 6, 2011 1:19 pm

JJ will be coming back to coach UH, not this year, but in a couple of years. Give Miano a 3 year contract that can be terminated when JJ comes back and have Miano hold the fort while JJ’s buyout expires allowing him to return to UH.

  255. 808Bowler December 6, 2011 1:23 pm

Wondering if the players and assistant coaches went to jd bout what graves said in the article? Maybe it put the wheels in motion or gave it alittle more spin. Very brave by Graves. But that’s what true leaders is. Brave.

  256. Wes'side Warrior December 6, 2011 1:23 pm

SMU is heading to the Big East. BCS Bowls. I’d think Coach Jones would want to try to take the team from irrelevance to National Champion if he can. He’ll probably at least go for another BCS game with them first.

  257. Buffoman December 6, 2011 1:32 pm

Well since I gather it’s “spill the beans” time for bloggers. I think Mr. Graves did a terrific job by doing just that. No inferences or double talk to have one twisting in the wind to figure out what he meant. he stated it.

I’d like to know about the falling out part.

I’d like to know what really did happen with Coach Lee, if anything did.

I don’t necessarily agree with Mr. Reardon’s writing or content, but I do enjoy his persectives and I like the rise he is able to get from others. Sort of like Rachel Maddow or Anne Colter. You may not like what they say or how they say it, but it does provide entertainment.

  258. Kokokev December 6, 2011 1:36 pm

During yesterday’s onterview on the animals show, bc mentioned that he had knowledge of incoming inquiries already….and one of them (which he chose not to mention) came from the state of Georgia. Think this feeler came from one Paul Johnson?

  259. al December 6, 2011 1:36 pm

wm…it was pride. who got me thinking robert anae as a top candidate.

he also got me thinking mark banker dc at oregon state who was a grad asst here and recruits hawaii regularly. he could bring cav back as his associate/oline coach, too.

  260. A-House December 6, 2011 1:38 pm

It is with a very heart and misty eyes that I sit here and post a farewell to someone very special to the A-House family. He and Kumi are the only Tsaikos to be called Uncle and Aunty by by Midori and MasaBoy.

    WE will miss him terribly!

    Sayonara until we meet again!

  261. al December 6, 2011 1:41 pm

littlebirdie…first, there already are many little birdies in my cage. you can be one too.

at one time, it was felt that jj would be back. the stage has changed big time as he would say since then. the challenge of the big east and bcs hopes are a new carrot to dangle in front of him.

secondly, asu is making a strong pitch for his services as well. they also have access to many great golf courses, too.

by then, jj may just want to retire here.

  262. WarriorMojo December 6, 2011 1:49 pm

Al, what’s the status of Mike Riley at osu? I can’t imagine Cav leaving osu unless Riley is fired and the whole staff is let go. I guess if that other coach, the donor whose name I don’t remember, left then that’s also a possibility.

And how come Riley’s name never comes up when there are coaching vacancies?

  263. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 1:50 pm

This “falling out” bit and the way our team fell apart during the season.. along with the point shaving innuendos does not sit well in my stomach…and the bit about Miano being the only coach smiling…. yikes!… does not paint a pretty picture…

  264. bigislandkurt December 6, 2011 1:50 pm

I might be wrong, but I think Anae is now at WAZZU with Leach.

    BIK

  265. Buffoman December 6, 2011 1:54 pm

I can’t see Paul Johnson leaving GT, but if he was willing to take a huge pay cut to come to the islands, he’d be #1.

Where does Mr. Anae coach as an assistant?

I guess John L. Smith is not available, huh (tongue in cheek)? He must have had his resume everywhere. Weber State. Well he’ll work his way back up or be forever forgotten.

If you wanted a recruiter, get Ron Zook. I believe he may have gotten let go. In a smaller arena he could be a winner. In the SEC and Big 10 he may have been over matched.

  266. Helen Graves December 6, 2011 1:57 pm

#236. You are right. DG has good character and a strong faith. When asked, he would not lie to a reporter. He shared his experiences and opinions honestly and forthrightly. Accept the interview for what it was — responses to questions asked at a time when he was upset and stressed.

  267. bigislandkurt December 6, 2011 1:58 pm

If you all believe that Graves was the only player who felt this way, you would be greatly mistaken.

I read a lot of people saying that Family business should be kept behind closed doors and other messages to the same tune. I tend to disagree. This is UH Warrior football at our State’s flagship institution. This “family” is going through a very public transition right now. In this day and age of technology, nothing is secret….ahem, sacred anymore. What is coming out of the Graves interview is nothing beyond what many people in the know, already knew.

    BIK

  268. Ed December 6, 2011 1:58 pm

For those of you that didn’t thing that Graves comments where appropriate, I disagree. He tried to be very thoughful and honest with his comments, and what did he (graves) really say that we all didn’t already know.

  269. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 2:00 pm

I wouldn’t mind Rich Miano if had had coached elsewhere for a couple of years, at least. But in all those years the guy hasn’t been wooed away, not once.

  270. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 2:00 pm

It’s like Bob Nash all over again.

  271. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 2:03 pm

Big East and National Championship will not exist in the same sentence once West Virginia leaves.

They will just be a conference with a lot of money to throw at its schools. Not that it’s a bad thing, but a power conference it is not.

  272. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 2:05 pm

I also heard the caller into Pacheco’s show stating that he knows Anae and spoke with him last year.

Anae would “love to come back to Hawaii…”

Anae is currently without employment having been ousted with the Arizona regime.

There are no reports that state he will be or has been considered a position with Leach.

Anae should be on the radar…I have no idea who Jeremy Bates is.

  273. Hiflyer December 6, 2011 2:08 pm

mih – agree with you on Miano, if his aspirations was to become a HC he should have gone on to other jobs for more experience and not just stay here for the last 13 years as the DB coach.

  274. Kevin December 6, 2011 2:11 pm

Lots of media on David Graves. Well from what I see. The Bleacher Report, quotes in the paper.

Reminds me of how Tyler Graunke spoke up after June Jones left and how the team must stick together and he wasn’t going anywhere.

VERY important for a QB to say that.

(I know what people will respond with regarding how Graunke’s senior year ended up, but I’m just saying.)

  275. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 2:11 pm

I’ve seen posts were bloggers have bashed fans for being critical of Coach Mack for XYZ reasons. Stating that we aren’t players so we don’t know ****. Fine, I can accept that.

Well, this comes directly from a player.

If he had said something like “Mack is the best coach in the history of the world…” then those same people wouldn’t be trying to discredit him or critical of his remarks.

I am sure we could interview some other players who would say something completely opposite of what Graves said.

    It doesn’t change anything.

  276. 702WarriorFan December 6, 2011 2:12 pm

    We’ll miss you Rasu.

    Rest in peace.

  277. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 2:12 pm

Graves is an honest guy. He gave an honest answer, although it appeared he was reluctant to discuss the topic. That some players don’t have a connection with a head coach isn’t unique. Players deal more directly with their position coaches and coordinators. The main thing is that McMackin had trust in Graves to give him the keys to the offense. Feelings don’t always have to be mutual, but it’s always better when the coach likes the player.

Exactly. I bet you could find players that dislike Petersen, Paterson, Carroll, Meyer for whatever reason.

  281. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 2:15 pm

By the way, Kenny Niumatalolo did place a call to UH . . . recommending Ivin Jasper.

  282. 808Bowler December 6, 2011 2:16 pm

Ya I herd bc say the same., said the ex uh coach wants to come back and asked bc to help him out. Bc said its someone we all know and we should hear his name soon as a candidate.

  283. Kevin December 6, 2011 2:17 pm

I’ve been thinking about something since last night….

Anyone ever thought of who exactly will be trying to influence the decision for the next HC???

There are a lot of long time and old time “supporters” (groupies, if you will) that have been “around” the program as some coaches have been around the program as well.

Bring in an outside guy and the odds of current staff retained is not their favor. Long time coaches in the program leave, those “hanging around” will no longer be part of the cliq.

They wouldn’t like that would they???

Even if the Xs and Os point to an outside hire being the best option.

  284. 808Bowler December 6, 2011 2:19 pm

I was thinking bout jasper. But would he run the run and shoot or option? I know his natural background is the option but uh currently don’t have the players for that system.

  285. primo123 December 6, 2011 2:20 pm

miano = nash? i hope not

JD is listening to all the comments coming across the coconut wireless and on the radio and if he hears alot of miano fans……it’ll be nash all over again.

miano might not be a bad thing. give’m a short leash and no buyout clause.

  286. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 2:21 pm

Why don’t we just call up Bill Walsh.

Or hey 49ers fans, what is Mariucci doing these days? 😉

  287. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 2:22 pm

You mean make sure we have a buyout clause.

  288. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 2:23 pm

Not sure if Miano will be the guy. Not sure if he won’t be the guy.

But I like the idea the coaching staff met today, crafted recruiting lists, and are about to hit Hawaii hard unless told otherwise.

Like I said, it’s better than the indecision after Nash was dismissed.

  289. 808Bowler December 6, 2011 2:24 pm

I love the recruiting season for some reason. Even when I used to play es sports ncaa football games. I loved the part where I get to recruit.

  290. 808Bowler December 6, 2011 2:25 pm

True. I like what miano is doing too. Showing leadership in a time so frail.

  291. LittleBirdie December 6, 2011 2:26 pm

#263, if ASU or any other School does not buyout JJ for $1.8 million, and JJ stays at SMU, then the stage will be set for him to return in a couple of years. There are other things besides money and national championships that are now driving JJ. Can’t chirp it on this blog.

  292. primo123 December 6, 2011 2:26 pm

or i mean….make so we dont have to buy him out. just let him go and dont owe him nothing….is there such a thing?

  293. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 2:27 pm

Money isn’t an issue for Miano. He already has plenty of money.

What I do like about him is he cares about the facilities, which is a trait shared by Mr. Clean (Bob Coolen). They know the Lower Campus needs sprucing up.

(By the way, I had to scold a UH worker for spitting on the A-House rock garden. Oh, the evils of smokeless tobacco.)

  294. Wes'side Warrior December 6, 2011 2:27 pm

And again, we agree to disagree.

I wouldn’t shake your hand and talk story with you, and then turn around and tell others (nicely or otherwise) that your conversational skills are lacking, or that you ramble on and on with no real destination in sight, or that you’re a nice guy, but omg, how’d you make it so far through life LIKE THAT? hahaha! Nope, if anything, you’ll get the polished version, and I’ll keep the rest to myself.

Guess we’re just different in that regard. No big deal. As long as you guys love my Warriors and Wahine like I do, I’ll still be here for you all, no matter what. Okay, moving on…

  295. primo123 December 6, 2011 2:28 pm

#288….no mas!….no west coast offense for me….we cannot recruit anyone to run that.

  296. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 2:28 pm

  305. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 2:31 pm

  306. Stephen Tsai December 6, 2011 2:32 pm

    Walsh?

    Is there a seance?

  307. maddog50 December 6, 2011 2:32 pm

This program needs outside energy with inside ability. Youth, enthusiasm, fresh approach. The Universityand the program can derive great reward with the right choice. It is all so much more than coaching…..leadership, passion, drive. I hope it is fresh and from the outside….the opportunity to succeed is far beyond expectation. That being said, Coach Mack took over in a tough moment…above all he was a football coach, sometimes that is just not enough in a rapidly changing world. I thank him for his many contributions that will be enjoyed in the future. Let’s do the right thing and get this moving—

Da Punahou mafia to the rescue.

Tsai….did Mouse help Rolo improve his play calling and/or understanding of the offense? like I mean this past season had to scratch da head with some of the calls…..running the run option instead of passing in critical need a first down situations really stuck in my gut.

Mouse is mouse. He’ll be ok.

    John’s bio from August 2007…

To know me is to love me, even all of my ex wives still talk to me and invite me over for dinner, dogs gravitate towards me as if I were small planet with my own garvitational pull or a large fire hydrant.

But I’m also unlucky, been hit by a car in front of the old Kapahulu theatres, thrown off a horse down a cliff in Okinawa, engaged to a sweet Korean lady who slept with a knife under her pillow and died twice on the operating table.

I was born in December 1959, in Kanagawa, Japan, a happy, cute roly poly baby, over the years, I’ve lost the cute and kept the roly poly part.

As my dad was military, we transferred to many cities, eventually settling in Hawaii, where I was kicked out of both Jefferson and Ala Wai elementary schools for fighting.

From there on, I attended Liho Liho, Niu Valley and Kaiser high school.

At the age of 14, I started sumo with the local club, originally it was an outlet to release my pent up energy as I was too big (fat) to play pop warner football and my karate class offered no contact.

At Kaiser, I played football, wrestled for two years, until I was approached by Futagoyama Oyakata (Wakanohana I) to join his stable.

Being what could charitably called a lackluster student, I fell for the oyakata’s spiel of the great life of a sumotori, with the sake flowing and sweet damsels throwing themselves at your feet.

One thing the oyakata failed to mention was the 7 hour practice sessions that started at 4 am all year long.

After 5 years with my best ranking in the Makushita division, I took my broken fingers and toes (11 or 12) loss of hearing, detached retina, broken nose, neck and spine problems and various hyper extended extremities limping home.

As a high school drop out opportunities were few, so I received my GED and started school at KCC, where once again I was a terrible student, really only doing well in the Japanese class.

After dropping out, I went to work for several transportation companies, eventually saving enough to buy my own three car limousine fleet that specialized in weddings for Japanese honeymooners.

After the first gulf war decimated the honeymoon business, I sold my company and moved to Japan for a few years to assist at a cousins private security company that specialized in keeping Yakuza out of boardroom meetings (go figure).

Back in Hawaii, I worked for the largest retail store in Waikiki, reaching my peak level of incompetence as a manager.

I moved to Las Vegas in 1997 and have been here since, working as a limousine driver for one of the mega resorts until my illness left me partially disabled.

I am active in several Japanese/America organizations and often M.C at the Karaoke contests/events.

I have a beautiful wife, a good, SMART son (maybe not mine?) , three sweet dogs and two fairly healthy parents.

What more can a guy want?

    Well……13 – 0 would be good.

Big thrill as a kid, watching Larry Price eat a sandwich at Arby’s in Hawaii Kai.

BTW when I died on the operating table, no god, no devil, no buddah,no allah, no bright light, just stars, lots of stars

Looks like tomorrow BSU and SDSU will leave the MWC and SMU/Houston/UCF will leave CUSA.

Navy is reportedly joining the Big East next week–guess they want to make sure that the first 5 go.

The Air Force General that has to make the decision on switching conferences is reportedly not going to make that decision until January.

  319. Garret December 6, 2011 2:44 pm

Jon Wilner says that SJSU and USU will probably be joining the MWC.

That means the Mountain West is definitely losing two football programs (SDSU and BSU) … which means the MWC most likely will be looking to add two … which means San Jose State and Utah State could be on their way to the MWC.

(Don’t be surprised if Air Force eventually makes the jump to the Big East with Navy, which would leave the MWC down three in football.)

SJSU athletic director Tom Bowen has been in contact with Mountain West officials about the possibility of joining the conference.

    http://blogs.mercurynews.com/collegesports/2011/12/06/bcs-realignment-boise-state-and-sdsu-to-the-big-east-reportedly-san-jose-state-and-usu-to-the-mountain-west-possibly/

  320. Garret December 6, 2011 2:46 pm

SDSU has been talking with media consultants who have studied the Big East’s upcoming TV deal (talks have been underway for that TV deal for a long time now) and they found out that the WORST CASE for Big East TV money is $6.4 mil. If that is true, no wonder why SDSU was trying so hard to get into the Big East.

Getting 4 basketball games with the Big East helps them also.

Sources said that SDSU has been working with media consultants who have advised them on what they could earn from a new TV deal in a newly constructed Big East. The lowest estimate was $6.4 million annually. By contrast, SDSU gets about $1.5 million annually from its current league, the Mountain West.

That increase alone is considered enough to make the move worthwhile. SDSU also expects to be assured of at least four non-conference games per season with Big East schools in basketball, helping offset any perceived drop in prestige it would have by moving to the Big West for non-football sports.

i wonder if ROLO emailed or spoke to JJ during the season to get ideas…..didnt SMU have a tight end this year?…..TWO RBS??…WOW! now that’s a stretch…….didn’t care for the 5 wideouts…..they had trouble throwing to four, three, two, sometimes even just one.

    i wonder…..hmmmm…

  323. Kokokev December 6, 2011 2:48 pm

I think there’s a time that comes where even being where you thought you wanted to be…..tasted success……and the pressure that comes with being a HC of an SEC team, sometimes it’s not all that cracked up to be. Just like the now new Ohio State coach. For whatever reasons…..is it better to be a big fish in a small pond? Or a small fish in a big ocean like the SEC? Therefore if Paul Johnson, for whatever reason entertained the thought of coming back to UH, he’d have my vote. Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t he hand over the keys to KN?

  324. Garret December 6, 2011 2:49 pm

Interesting news from this Salt Lake Tribune reporter. He says that SDSU is putting their non-football teams in the Big West, which I think is *great* for UH and the Big West. That will save travel time and money for SDSU’s non-football teams. UH will be paying SDSU to play in Hawaii and will have to pay its way to San Diego, but SDSU is a great school for UH to face in the Big West.

The big news to me is that BSU will apparently put their non-football teams in the WAC! Karl Benson is helping out BSU once again…Benson even tried to get SDSU to join the WAC, but SDSU preferred the Big West.

Best wishes to Coach Mack and his family. Mahalo for all his efforts and consideration to his players and staff. My hope is that we promote from within and keep the offense but tweat it and it has been mentioned that Rolo was interested in implementing a two back set and a tight end to offset our lack of experience. I think Coach Miano will do a good job if given the head coaching job.

  326. Pomai December 6, 2011 2:52 pm

OK my 3 cents – I don’t know about anyone else but when I read what David Graves said throughout the interview what I got was that he thought that Mack was too laid back, just like everyone on this blog thinks, he felt that the team needed a coach who would light a fire under them just like everyone on the blog, he said that the position coaches are the ones who are teaching them, isn’t that what they are supposed to do? You guys just read too much into what he said.

Gross. I smoke and I think dip is nasty.

There should be a law that says if you dip you MUST spit into a container or bottle that is NOT CLEAR.

    Re #271 and #275

I know all Tsaikos are supposed to think alike and agree on everything, but I completely disagree on this point. If Miano is ready, he’s ready. I don’t think you have to go to the mainland to learn how to coach football anymore than you have to go to the mainland to learn how to play football.

    Good memories made.

  331. kev-1 December 6, 2011 2:56 pm

Jasper? Do we really want to go back to watching the option? It is fun for a couple of plays, but all game? Not me. As much as I admire Nuimatalolo and Johnson and the success they have had at Navy and Georgia Tech, every time I try to watch them on tv, I can’t make it through an entire game. It is boring to me. Just my opinion though. Some say winning is all that matters. Well, I like to be entertained too.

  332. primo123 December 6, 2011 2:57 pm

#328. yes, assistant coaches are the hands on ones that the players will interact with the most. coach mack’s job wasnt the nitty gritty stuff…it should be and was more the big picture.

graves just said it like it was. he didnt think mack was a great motivational speaker and that he’d go off on tangents and ramble on. We all know people like that.

  333. kev-1 December 6, 2011 2:57 pm

I used to dip and smoke when I was in high school. After high school I just smoked. Then I quit smoking when I got married and was dying for nicotine so I tried to dip again. Couldn’t do it.

  334. Garret December 6, 2011 2:58 pm

By adding SDSU, the Big West will have 11 schools. The Big West’s commissioner said a few months ago that they would not stop at 11 schools, that if they expanded they would go to 12 schools and split into divisions. If SJSU doesn’t get to the MWC, then maybe the Big West’s commissioner will get his publicly stated wish and they will eventually join the Big West.

Air Force has been looking to leave the MWC for months now, announcing that even if they leave their football team in the MWC they would still move their non-football teams to another conference where they can compete better. My guess is that Air Force could join the WAC or Big Sky, I don’t think they are the 12th team for the Big West.

  335. Wes'side Warrior December 6, 2011 2:58 pm

Garret… thought I read that Navy and Air Force won’t be able to join until 2013 or 2014 due to “logistics” of their already mapped out schedules.

  336. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 2:58 pm

    Pomai,

I think you missed this question.

“BR: Because he’s too laid back?

DG: It wasn’t the laid back, it was just…maybe his public speaking. He would go off on tangents sometimes, and we would lose sight of what he was really trying to tell us just because sometimes he talks too much.”

  337. kev-1 December 6, 2011 2:59 pm

    F’ing Benson!

  338. Manoa Mist December 6, 2011 3:01 pm

Maybe I hit my head on the A-House rock but I have confidence JD will pick the best guy. These are my wish list finalists:

    1. Brian Norwood

    2. Duane Akina

    3. Ivin Jasper

    4. Robert Anae

    5. Rich Miano

As to the rest of it, heck I never coached football how the heck am I supposed to know? JD played for UH, JD is our AD and whoever he picks I’m behind him.

  339. Kokokev December 6, 2011 3:05 pm

I do believe in the passing game but I’m a run guy. Evidence is that when UH had there more successful seasons, those seasons had success running the ball. Run blocking technique is normally easier to develop than pass blocking IMO and entering the MWC I do believe we need to control the ball longer knowing the venues and weather conditions we’ll have to contend with……not saying we have to abandon the passing game altogether.

  340. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 3:05 pm

    #340.

Good list. Although that one article had Jeremy Bates as a possible candidate.

The guy seems to have quite a bit of experience and is under Carroll right now.

Does anyone know if there is a connection between this guy and Hawaii?

  341. Hawaiianbod December 6, 2011 3:06 pm

  342. AlaWai December 6, 2011 3:08 pm

kev-1: I agree with you in not wanting the Option at UH. The R&S is the O for us. Rolo graduated from Mouse U. We now need a new WR coach to teach the SB’s and WR’s. Lelie knows it well if as well as several others. What I want to see is a good motivator and game manager, who see’s the big picture. I’d also like to see us being more aggressive in the second half of games.

  343. LizKauai December 6, 2011 3:09 pm

#317 – Mahalo for the stroll through memory lane! I can hear lv laughing now!

Re Tsai-ko opinions and behavior. The sky is the limit as far as opinions go. The behavior, however, is usually characterized by fundamental respect, a heavy dose of humor (especially during tough times), a certain awe of the Unseen, instant invocations to the Unseen in times of urgent need, generous kindness, undoubted love for the Warriors and unshakable regard for the Blog Host.

Kind of an oasis. A safe place.

  344. Dancer December 6, 2011 3:09 pm

Not Miano – Plays favorites, Acts literally like a bully to some players if you are not on his list. Cannot see talent over his emotional ties to players. Associate coach who had DB’s – who got burned more then making good plays? What has he brought to the table..

McMackin at least will go out being a class act as a person – Miano no matter what will NEVER be that. Hire him that is what he has been waiting for and telling players that is what he is waiting for, very professional. Understand this is a business and no one takes into account what goes on with some of the young men who play and how they are treated but hire Miano and my prediction is a high turnover program. Definitely speaking from “some” experience. Talk to some of the players and see what they think of him. Not the players he mentions in the papers consistently but the ones he doesn’t those are the ones who will relay the trust about Miano. ! Good Luck to a struggling attendance program, very sad because the people of Hawaii and the players are the best.

  346. Garret December 6, 2011 3:10 pm

Garret… thought I read that Navy and Air Force won’t be able to join until 2013 or 2014 due to “logistics” of their already mapped out schedules.

    Wes’side Warrior,

That is a possibility, their entries could be delayed. However, a lot of that stuff can be worked out. For example, Navy is scheduled to play Air Force and SMU so those become conference games. They will have space for 4 or 5 nonconference games. Some games can be pushed to later years, etc.

Schools schedule things years in advance…and somehow games get shuffled or canceled when they switch conferences. For example, the BYU/BSU 10-year scheduling deal is voided if either school joins an AQ conference–when those clauses are there, scheduling adjustments get done easier.

Agree with Manoa Mist #340. Brian Norwood makes a lot of sense. Radford High School and UH graduate. Knows Hawaii and it’s ways, yet as the Baylor associate head coach has connections across Texas and the rest of the mainland. Plus he would bring a different perspective to the program.

  352. Dancer December 6, 2011 3:21 pm

    #349 primo123 –

Get it – it is simple – put a winning team on the field and people will come !

There is an entire coaching staff – not just one coach – and it was not just Mack. Every coach has a position and players they are responsible for – to be honest the associate and position coaches are the ones who coach more than the head coach at any school.! So if a team does not win it is not just that guy. If you are already in trouble – you don’t hire someone who was also part of that. That is why when a head coach goes – they clean the staff! To also add one thing and honor the phrase – “Student-Athlete” — Great for all the Seniors being on track to graduate ! That alone is a HUGE plus for a Coach. And that was important to Mack !

  353. HawaiiMongoose December 6, 2011 3:21 pm

At least Ivin Jasper can beat BYU.

    http://uhfootball.blogspot.com/2011/12/byu-countdown-1992-comeback-win.html

But, like many of you, I don’t want to see UH go back to the triple option.

  354. HawaiiMongoose December 6, 2011 3:26 pm

Garret, if the Big East expansion had to happen, I’m glad that SDSU’s non-football sports will end up in the Big West. That’s a silver lining that’s really good for UH.

I’m even MORE glad that BSU’s non-football sports apparently WON’T end up in the Big West. It would be bad enough to have to send UH teams on the road to Boise again. It would be even worse to have to pay BSU’s teams to come to Honolulu, especially if BSU is rolling in Big East TV dough.

As for the Big West’s 12th member, I’m thinking either San Jose State if the Spartans don’t get an MWC invitation (football would remain in the WAC), or UCSD which would move up from Division II. I understand the Tritons have been a powerhouse at that level and may be ready for prime time.

    Tom Mui

Time for another breaking bread pow wow! Circle the wagons and make plans for the future.

Kailua hale is ready to host a fundraiser kick off for the new era and I need some help with this!! Call or e-mail.

Saw Pat Richardson in Sam’s Club yesterday and he echoed my thoughts that it is time to rally past players to the cause in a big way. Time to help out Mike Biscotti and Mike Perkins in their efforts to support the program’s players.

FB Alums going to the USC gameand in SAN?? Get in touch as we have strong support for a Friday night fundraiser/get together for the FB program in LAX & SAN. Tickets may be ordered through me (I will buy them through UH so we get the $$ into our program) and I will bring them with me like I did at Army and CO for you. This time it will cost more than the ticket price; you need to join either Na Koa or Letterwinners Club for this offer.

David Eagle-Are you joining us in this effort? Can we count on your help to rally FB Alums??

Murray Cassidy-Are you joining us in this effort? Can we count on your help to rally FB Alums??

Like the Seattle & LV trip I was on, all fans are invited to any reception that comes about. I am starting to collect items for the opportunity drawings at these events starting now with More details to come. All I can say is PolyMom has agreed to help out and she is the real deal on getting us the best location for this event in LAX and I’ve already started planning for SAN.

  356. Wes'side Warrior December 6, 2011 3:40 pm

  357. primo123 December 6, 2011 3:41 pm

#335 Dancer….yeah got it….but…hawaii’s got some fair weather fans…..even at 10-3 last year the attendance was going down from 2008. Too much downward trend for JD to let go. Lower attendence means lose $$. Cannot have that. Need to change the perception of the program and you do that by changing the coach…..and like u said the whole staff. But one thing about local people…dey loyal…ie bob nash. and being loyal means you give the guys that’s been loyal a chance and that means miano. like it or not.

    if its him….i pray he’s successful…..

  358. Wes'side Warrior December 6, 2011 3:43 pm

The Big East is also hoping to add Air Force as a football-only member, sources told ESPN’s Joe Schad. But the entry of Air Force and Navy could be delayed until 2014 or 2015 due to scheduling logistics, the sources said.

Dilution added to more dilution doesnt add up to BCS AQ beyond 2013 for the Big East. Wish them luck.

  361. RedZone December 6, 2011 3:46 pm

Ivin Jasper would love Joey Iosefa. Would probably move Jackson to qb. I like Navy’s version of the triple option. Add a little r&s to spice it up.

  362. Kokokev December 6, 2011 3:50 pm

The option may not look pretty but run well it can be effective. Mix in some run & shoot and you’d have an offense that would be very difficult to contain. Attracting players wouldn’t be impossible as evidence of Navy and Air Force. They have much more limitations on recruiting than others do…..they usually have difficulty attracting 3 or 4 star recruits but accomplish much with what they have. Let’s face it….we don’t get alot of 4 star recruits and yes the R/S is entertainment at it’s best but we can’t be the showtime L.A. Lakers each year. We must make the best of the talent we can recruit and know that by executing perfectly, we could compete against most

  363. primo123 December 6, 2011 4:02 pm

here’s a thought…….if winning brings out the fair weathered fan…..but will losing, but covering the spread still bring them out??

    maybe maybe…..

  364. primo123 December 6, 2011 4:03 pm

one word about our future offense………….HYBRID…………………..

    maybe maybe…….

  365. Dan-O December 6, 2011 4:09 pm

#365….anything run effectively looks good. I guess everyone is just spoiled with the Colt era, with all the passing yards and 40+ points per game.

Changing the offense will take time, and more importantly personnel. The past regime has recruited about 3-4 years of RNS personnel. A change to a more run-oriented offense would mean more RB’s, less WR’s and more running SB’s.

Depending on who the next coach is, and what offense is run….we may see some players transferring out.

  366. WarriorNY December 6, 2011 4:09 pm

    @286, Hellen Graves,

Most of us here applaud David for being honest. I hope you were not offended by some of the comments that were left…

  367. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 4:12 pm

It’s easy to put the onus on the Head Coach.. but if we take the example of Boise’s previous head coach, we see that winning wasn’t his forte, it was his associate Coach’s…aka Petersen’s.

  368. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 4:13 pm

So, if we keep all the supporting staff, what’s to say we’ll do any better?

  369. Derek December 6, 2011 4:14 pm

Everybody calm down. JD and the “management team” will make the best possible choice to try to move our program forward. People can say who they’d like or don’t like, but in the final analysis our desires won’t sway the powers that be. I do think the new coach should be a younger person, somebody in the 30s or 40s with lots of energy because it is a 24/7 job. The selectee should be an effective recruiter and is a good evaluator of division IA talent. The new coach must love Hawaii and doesn’t settle for being satisfied. The new coach doesn’t necessarily have to be a nice guy. The new coach is very organized and pays to details. These are some of my thoughts. Now, we sit back and wait. Hopefully, it’s soon because recruiting is so critical.

PS: When hired, Dave Shoji and Bob Coolen were young guys. Now, they’re like old farts! They’ve found a succesful

  370. primo123 December 6, 2011 4:16 pm

    #371 tHERE’S NOTHING…….two junks dont make a good.

  371. Buffoman December 6, 2011 4:17 pm

Is the “real” list going to be made public? You know transparency. Or, do we just speculate and try to second guess who may be in?

If you like a strong running game and great special teams, you may want to consider Pat Hill. Yes he got fired, but just imagine using his attitude, “anytime, any place” when scheduling. Heck, we’d see our boys on national television playing the likes of Oklahoma, OSU, LSU. May not be pretty, but we’d get tv exposure and it may help recruiting.

When a recruit asks, “well who will we be playing in the next two years?” I don’t know if he’ll light up if the coach says, “well the mWC folks and or non-conference will be NE Wshington State, SW Idaho A&M and the tough one will be Tulane.” Or, “well son, it’s going to be tough, we’ll be on national television facing LSU for their opener at their place and will close with Oklahoma, also at their place.” We need a few committed men who can face up to daunting opponents like those, are you interested on showing your stuff on national television?”

  372. primo123 December 6, 2011 4:17 pm

    Who hired Shoji and Coolen?

  373. Derek December 6, 2011 4:17 pm

model. I hope the new coach can find that formula that works for the football program.

  374. tommui December 6, 2011 4:19 pm

#286 Helen Graves. Though David’s remarks were honest and certainly reflects much of the thinking here – that Coach Mac was one terrific person who loved his players and sincerely cared for each one. A sincere person who was not the most articulate nor fiery in nature.

  375. Old School Dave December 6, 2011 4:22 pm

This guy would be a great hire:

    So would this guy:

    http://www.ramblinwreck.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/sewak_mike00.html

Both are / have been successful head coaches – no On the Job Training. Both have coached at UH.

Pat Hill would also restore a lot of the Toughness and Hard Nosed style of football that is synonymous with Hawaii Football of the past and has been lacking over the last few coaching regimes.

  376. primo123 December 6, 2011 4:23 pm

i can see how…….coach mack being a soft spoken person, kind hearted, etc etc….when coaching his defense, when he got pissed off and all veins in his neck started sticking out and the spit was flying and he was calling double timeout to curse his teams’ effort….i’m sure then it gets the players attention!!!

    maybe…maybe….

  379. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 4:27 pm

Umnn… Shoji and Coolen were kind of pioneers in their fields.. I mean volleyball and maybe even women’s softball were in their infancy and there weren’t many “seasoned” coaches around.

  380. Old School Dave December 6, 2011 4:28 pm

Retain Tony Tuioti, maybe Cal Lee. Rich Miano (nice guy, dedicated, bleeds green) needs to be reassigned to another position. I feel that the UH secondary needs a new and fresh injection of coaching ideas and temperament – too much grabbing, DBs being out of position at crucial times. Rocky Seto from USC would be a good addition in the secondary. Question is Seto being a mainland boy, will be be willing to break away from Uncle Pete Carroll and travel over the Pacific to coach here? Love Seto’s enthusiasm, though.

  381. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 4:28 pm

Today, it’s different. We got seasoned coaches in most sports and to keep up and be competitive, you need to get coaches that have a solid track record or who have been mentored by some of the best and most successful.

  384. Dan-O December 6, 2011 4:33 pm

Funny there has been no mention of Aranda and Gordy Shaw? It was reported that Rolo and Brian Smith was on the mainland recruiting, and Cal and Rich are re-visiting all the local high schools.

Mouse has left the building…..no word from Tomey either, but he lives here already.

Im assuming they are trying to line-up jobs elsewhere.

  385. cocobean December 6, 2011 4:44 pm

Never was a Miano guy but I’m slowly being swayed. We need an infusion of athletes and big boys on both sides of the ball. I’m starting to think Miano can do a good impersonation of Gib. You know, that tireless recruiter who’ll scour the globe to find recruits that can help. To compete in the MWC we’re going to need an upgrade in talent.

The ability and the energy to recruit is the trait I’d look for in the new HC.

Same place high noon on 12/12/2011 with the usual suspects??

  387. Derek December 6, 2011 4:45 pm

Ingrediments for a football team for sustained excellence:

    1) QB who makes plays (hopefully a “holy grail”)- leader, efficient, accurate, smart.

    2) Offensive and defensive linemen (the heart of holding or moving the line of scrimmage).

    3) Receivers and Running Backs (da playmakers, those that touch the football)

    4) Placekicker, Punter, and Long Snapper (these guys can win or lose a game by what they do everytime they step on the playing field)

    5) Secondary (the last line of defense)

    5) Defensive ends (protects the perimiter, pass rushers)

    6) Linebackers (run and pass defense support)

    7) Tight Ends (Run blocking support, short yardage receiving).

    8) Fullback or blocking back (shorty yardage rushng, blocking support for RB or QB

    9) Kickoff and Punt Returner (usually a WR, RB, or DB)

    10) Special teams players (speed, good tackers, reckless, fearless)

  388. Da Punchbowl Kid December 6, 2011 4:45 pm

Hybrid RnS and Option – like it! We have the QBs for it and the RBs.

As for the next Coach, I said a few years back that the Coach here needs to be a hybrid too, a combination of Jesus, Vince Lombardi and Kamehameha the Great. A little bit of Jerry Maguire too, if we could have everything. Tough to find, I know, but there has to be somebody like that out there. Maybe.

It is what it is and will be what it will be.

Did anybody else find DG’s comments about Tomey interesting?

I have a feeling which way JD is going with the program in terms of the brand of football we might be playing in the future. The Under Armour brand will apply – with a mean streak! Just hope JD sticks around.

Looking better each day to just have four major conferences.

North, South, East and West. Draw out the parameters.

Sell a title name to each Conference.

Nuff of this nonsense progressive changes each week.

Bring back tradition, stick to it, and keep their feet in the mud.

    BIK

  403. al_kiQaida December 6, 2011 5:03 pm

@386 Shoko, I totally agree with you. But on a positive note, I heard there was a lot of nervous people in Boise when an untested offensive coordinator was hired to be their head coach.

  404. primo123 December 6, 2011 5:04 pm

    maybe maybe…..

  405. bigislandkurt December 6, 2011 5:04 pm

Don’t need Donavan or the committee’s revelation to see what they are looking for in a new coach:

    1) One who excites the fan base

    2) One who increases season ticket sales and revenue

    3) One who wins recruiting wars

    4) One who wins games.

or at least I hope this is what they are looking for. 🙂

  410. Chee! December 6, 2011 5:16 pm

The way the secondary performed this season makes me question if Miano would be a good fit as HC. Then again, defensive play calling/strategy probably contributed to out of position DB’s which allowed offenses to exploit the secondary they way they did…IDK.

But I dont doubt the man’s work ethic and contributions to the program..heck, if anyone bleeds green, its Miano. Its how the secondary performed this season leave me scratching my head..

  412. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 5:24 pm

Does Miano excite the “average fan,” the type of fans that we need to get more of at the stadium?

My unscientific study asking 6 fans with what can be described as moderate interest in UH said “no”.

To be fair, they never heard of Robert Anae or Ivin Jasper. A few did hear the name Duane Akina before.

Miano has never been a head coach, so its hard to tell if he would be good or bad.

    al_kiQaida:

Yeah but Boise had a winning record season after season… year after year… not so here in Hawaii.

Petersen began his coaching career in 1987 as the head freshman coach at UC Davis under Hall of Fame coach Jim Sochor. In 1989 he became the receivers coach for the varsity, departing in 1992 to become the quarterbacks coach at Pittsburgh. He moved back west in 1993 to coach the quarterbacks at Portland State under Tim Walsh; the Vikings advanced to the Division II playoffs in both 1993 and 1994. Peterson moved over to Oregon in 1995 as the receivers coach, and spent six years as an assistant for the Ducks under head coach Mike Bellotti. In 2001, he became the offensive coordinator at Boise State under first-year head coach Dan Hawkins.

Sorry, but I have very little confidence in Miano as head coach. Not with his limited local experience.

What do we need in a new Coach?

We need a Coach who is in good physical and mental shape to set the example for our players so they get into their best shape.

We need a Coach who can relate to the community. And one that goes out of their way to inspire and uplift future Warriors.

We need a Coach who inspires the players and encourages them to read about the game. And those who have played the game in the past.

We need a Coach who can work with the administration.

We need a Coach to create real game scenarios. I want to see our band, and loud speakers with recorded fans that creates the noise our team will face on the road. USC…

We need a Coach that respects all cultures, religions and most of all their fans.

We need a Coach with experience to set the tone that if you do not keep up with your school work, then no play time for you. You are out!

We need a Coach that will be the CEO of the football program.

We need a Coach that is a can do guy. Not an excuse guy.

Who are these guys? I got my short list. Why no one has even commented on Dino Babers, come on Hawaii fans!!!

@Don Weir when we come back to Oahu want to meet tommui. Let’s do lunch. I like his comments.

  429. A-joe December 6, 2011 6:15 pm

Doesn’t matter who the coach will eventually be, I’ll never turn my back on UH. However the program turns out- Up, down, left, right… I’ll continue to support them any way I can.

One day, they will win it all. I’ll be there, waiting all along.

  434. Rey Graulty December 6, 2011 6:22 pm

Hope Ken Niumatalolo, head coach at Navy, former UH quarterback and good local boy whom Mufi Hanneman punched out when they were on the Iolani basketball team, applies for the job – he and his offense with Ivan Jasper as OC – would be perfect fits. UH would be so lucky!

  435. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 6:24 pm

    Pomai,

By looking at the whole picture one does not come out with the assumption that Mack was “laid back”.

Graves was specifically asked if Mack was laid back and he said No.

If anything you are calling Graves a politician because he said No but you think he meant Yes.

  436. Pomai December 6, 2011 6:26 pm

  438. A-House December 6, 2011 6:27 pm

It don’t matter what we think will make a great UH football coach or who that person is.

Only thing that matters is that the selectin committee remember that there are many schools that use a “RNS” system – as some have mentioned, a “hybrid” or “modified” offense – provided they want to continue using said system.

Through the season, I was disappointed in the lack of vision in play calling – seemed like JJ was still here – pass, pass, pass, pass – you get my drift. If Rolo was stymied from above, I will presume that it was Coach Mack or Miano – aren’t they the only 2 above him?

Who will remain on the coaching staff will be the new HC’s decision – so why keep worrying?

My drift? If it is something over which you have no control, don’t worry about it!

I like Doris Day – que sera sera, whatever will be will be, it’s not ours to see, que sera sera, WHAT WILL BE WILL BE!

  439. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 6, 2011 6:28 pm

    I don’t know what’s so unclear about,

“It wasn’t the laid back, it was just…maybe his public speaking. He would go off on tangents sometimes, and we would lose sight of what he was really trying to tell us just because sometimes he talks too much.”

Graves was quite consistent in the interview saying that it was a communication issue at worst.

  442. cocobean December 6, 2011 6:31 pm

#414. #417. I share the same feeling as both of you. But I’m begining to reexamine those feeling mainly because there seems to be a subtle push by the media casting him in a faovrable light.

Again, I really don’t care who is chosen as long as the guy can recruit. Priority one is to upgrade the talent. For me, the BYU game highlighted the desparity between what we have and what good mid majors have.

At the D1 level, the next man up is a given. Injuries, like kukai, will happen. We need solid D1 talent throughout the 3 deeps. To me, X’s and O’s comes in as a distant second in the main quality I would look for in a HC.

  458. Old Diver December 6, 2011 6:40 pm

There is no such animal as a proven head coach when you bring in someone new. That person will bring no track record of being a head coach here. There are countless successful former head coaches who have been fired when they move schools. There are countless sucessful coordinators who have been fired when moved to the head coaching position. I can’t think of a worse reason than to hire a successful coach from Minnesota just because he has been successful in Minnesota. Swimming in a pool in Iowa is different from swimming at Sandy Beach.

  459. al December 6, 2011 6:42 pm

the effects of graduates hiram thompson and bill amis become more evident.

mbb will improve. they are young and haven’t found their lineup yet. lack of firepower hurts them too. maybe a full court press all game long could soothe their shot selections and shooting percentages. might improve the fouls as well.

    they’ll get it midseason.

Does Miano excite the “average fan,” the type of fans that we need to get more of at the stadium?

The average fan cannot even name a UH football player in the last six years that are not named Colt Brennan or Davone Bess… MAYBE Bryant Moniz…

The average fan are walk-ups, NOT season ticket holders.

  465. Kevin December 6, 2011 7:02 pm

Dave Shoji and Bob Coolen’s career progression cannot be compared to what Jim Donovan and UH needs to find TODAY.

When Shoji and Coolen were starting their careers, their respective sports were not under the scruitny like football is. Whether or not they succeeded in the first few years was NOT in the public eye.

  466. madeinhawaii December 6, 2011 7:06 pm

Hopefully BB will start winning soon so we can breathe again…

  468. redwarrior December 6, 2011 7:09 pm

It looks like Rolo or Miano will have to sit Graves down and have a talk about leadership. Here’s what Richard Torres said about Mack… from Star Advertiser “Coach Mack’s such a great person, a great coach, he’s done so much for me and my family,” Torres said. “He gave me a scholarship, gave me an opportunity and allowed me to be the person I am today. So I’m in great debt to Coach Mack. It’s just so heartbreaking to see this.”

That’s why Torres is respected by his team mates and is a team captain.

  469. Kevin December 6, 2011 7:11 pm

    Made,

Maybe your definition of average is different from mine.

The 20K that was at the Tulane game were mostly season ticket holders… NOT the “average fan”, but the ABOVE-average.

When people say the “average” fan, it is what it is, take an average.

As for Greg Salas and Kealoha Pilares… honestly I’m pretty sure the “average fan” has no idea who they are and too many times I have heard people call Kealoha Pilares “Keoki Pilares”…

But I guess my idea of the “average fan” is not the most flattering opinion. But its MY opinion so… 😎

  470. Kevin December 6, 2011 7:14 pm

The “average fan” can sure as hell tell you the recruiting class of LSU in 2005 though.

It’s NOT that hard to follow UH football… the ONLY GAME IN TOWN.

Pick up a damn newspaper or even watch the freakin news.

Name recognition to face isn’t that hard either… IF you are following the team and it doesn’t even take that much effort.

Personally I just think a combination of a lack of interest and LAZINESS because it’s not the popular NFL or a BCS nationally covered program adds to the ignorance of some Hawaii fans.

It’s really not that hard to know what is happening.

Want to see how Mac’s retirement affected some coaches – see Rolo’s picture in today’s StarAdvertiser page C3 – he looks devastated.

According to Bobby C on the radio, Rolo did not have complete control over the offense, it was Mac as advised by Mouse. So I take back that the offensive coordinator should have been replaced. Rolo wanted to do some things to improve the pure run and shoot.

If it hadn’t been for the special teams breakdown in the San Jose game, Mac would still have his job. The score would have been 28-26, instead of 27-28. So it was the old coaches -Tomey and Mouse who were somewhat responsible for Mac losing his job.

  483. Jeff#51formerwalkon December 6, 2011 7:51 pm

Coach’s resignation too sudden amist all he has done for the program both on and off the feild. Yeah, its a cut throat business, even more so at the D1 level…….but this 6-7 season doesn’t warrant this. If any, it should be a wake up call or tightening of the belt (salary reduction, to be increased based on improved performance); but not let a good man go. Mack pieced together what was left behind by Jones (remember what was going thru our minds during that departure), and he rebuilt off of that; (providing numerous educatinal opps for current and incoming players, and steadily improving the graduates). He is a true coach that totally looks out for all his players regardless of their status on the team. Wouldn’t it make more sense to enter a new conference with success, familiarity and most of all trust among all involved. Hawaii has experinced wrong selections in the past…..

As for the declining student attendance at the games……..take a lesson from those that stayed true and faithful….when the going gets rough, the tough stay true!!!!!!!!! Don’t be a fair weather fan, and don’t be a fan when its convenient……and for the powers that be, don’t be that way either.

To Coach Mack, mahalo for all you have done for my son, and all the other men. Hope it can still work.

417 MIH, I think what Shoko said, it’s “always a crap shoot”, is very pertinent since we can probably only afford an untested coach*. And, I think that’s what we’ll get. A tried and true coach with a winning history is going to demand a contract that we can’t afford. We got Champagne tastes and a beer budget.

I’m VERY curious to see the list of names of those coaches that are going to inquire about the job and the list of those that being asked.

Whatever the case — I’ll be in my seat at Aloha Stadium in good times and bad, rain or no rain, beer or no beer (the last one is a bit of an exaggeration).

My two pennies…in an ideal situation, so far I like

    1) Kevin Gilbride

    2) Duane Akina

    3) Rich Miano

Miano would not have been in my top three four years ago, perhaps top ten. But after hearing him in his recent interviews, he sounds like a guy who “gets” Hawaii, “gets” Hawaii Football, and dare I say, “gets” Hawaii fans. He’s passionate, knowledgeable, ambitious, AND articulate. He seems proactive and organized, getting out there and reconnecting with potential recruits promoting the program’s stablity and future. He sounds like the type of guy we need, a good football program manager, a Hawaii Football (as a brand) promoter. Still I’ll be curious to hear what the other potential applicants for the job have to say, but so far Miano has made the biggest impression on me as a fan wondering: from here, where do we go now?

On another note, I hope Rolo stays. The things he was able to do with great talent last season was spectacular. I saw, not a June Jones RnS, but a Rolovich RnS. I think he has “it” as an OC, I really do. Feed him the talent…we’ll be competitve and fun to watch.

  520. Old School Dave December 6, 2011 9:31 pm

Coach Miano is a good man, dedicated, loyal, and a hard worker. I feel that he can be very valuable to the UH football program in many capacities the same way that George Lumpkin has been. Lumpkin has seen it all and done it all at UH. He was the one who took care of a lot of the day-to-day business of running the program when rehired by June Jones in 98 (making sure players where going to class, study hall, discipline when necessary, etc). You need coaches like a George Lumpkin and Rich Miano can be that person. Is Miano head coaching material? I would say no, but he is valuable to the program in many other ways.

I hope UH and JD go after someone who has successful head coaching experience and it doesn’t necessarily have to be at a BCS or mid-major school. Look at Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly and his career progression from Grand Valley St. (Div-II), Central Michigan, Cincinnati, and then Notre Dame.

  528. papajoe2 December 6, 2011 10:13 pm

To those who want Coach Tomey, I sat through all of his games and the offense was boring and conservative. When Bob Wagner took over, on the first game of his coaching career, he passed on third and long from maybe the oponents’ 30 yard line, whereas Tomey would run the ball up the middle to gain maybe a yard or 2.

  529. JE December 6, 2011 10:16 pm

I would like to see Cal Lee at Head Coach. If you gonna stick with the Run n Shoot..you need an offensive mind. Cal Leee certainly has that experience and knows the system. Don’t Hire a defensive minded HC if Run n Shoot is your offense.

  530. papajoe2 December 6, 2011 10:16 pm

Just watched Kanoa on tv relaying only David Graves’ negative comments that he made of Coach Mac. Did say that DG thought coach Miano will make a great head coach. What about the positive things that DG said about Coach Mac? Nothing.

  531. papajoe2 December 6, 2011 10:18 pm

I too, would favor an offensive type of coach. Low scoring, and boring offense will not bring in the fans.

  534. JE December 6, 2011 10:22 pm

Recruit to your primary plan of attack. If run n shoot is your Mind set..then an Offense mind would recruit accordingly. Ad defensive HC would lose out on the offensive recruiting battle and waste the potentail of the run n shoot system.

  542. Not an Expert December 6, 2011 10:30 pm

Coach Mack demise in my opinion is the development of his coaching staff. First time and young offense and defense coordinators working with coaches 25 to 35 years their senior. Having brought on a coach like Tomey’s stature and experience definitely creates certain persona and leadership issues. Looking back MIano used to converse with coach Mack a lot during the games until the arrival of Tomey. The synergism got disrupted. As some say the chemistry of a team is important, you also need a good chemistry of the coaching staff.

  543. kev-1 December 6, 2011 10:32 pm

  545. krump1_AKA_protector December 6, 2011 10:34 pm

To add to what ‘papajoe2′ was saying on #531 about Tomey as a prospective HC. Tomey never could take UH to the next level and then deserted us for the “greener pastures” of the Arizona desert. It was Coach Wags who brought in Paul Johnson from Georgia Southern to rev up the Offense and to be the first to bring a WAC Championship home. Tomey even gets credit for Coach Wags’ aggressive D. Tomey was horrible this year as the ST coordinator. Yes he has a wealth of experience, is a fine orator and motivator of players, but please recognize that blunders on his watch helped Coach Mack lose his job. If he had done HIS job with any level of of efficiency and efficacy, Coach Mack would still have had his (job). Perhaps you might give a pass to Tomey since he brought some “innovative” blocking schemes (learned) from Virginia Tech(?) or the Bengals maybe? It cost us some crucial games. Tomey’s time has passed, so for people who keep mentioning him, please stop.

I noticed that their bench shirts have the Hawaiian Island chain on them. Now that is something I wish we could incorporate into our football uni. How about the H on one side and the island chain on the other? Too asymetrical? At least somewhere on the uniform would be mean.

Then it mentions someone coming to banish the weak.. New coaches tend to clean out past staff members…

AND the date of January 2nd is NOT that far of a possibility as to the time we can see a new HC hired.

Until a few years ago, I thought everytime our offense had the ball, we had potential to score with 1 play. Well maybe last year too, but just didn’t get that feeling this year. Winning games 56-35 brings a lot of excitement. Go for the offense. High scoring wins will put people in the seats. Unforunately, defense wins games.

who the hell is ty detmer?

  569. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 12:08 am

I think Tomey’s philosphy was to keep the score low so you have a chance to win in the last quarter. It was good in that you are “in” most games, but by being conservative, it makes for a boring game. 3rd and 3, run the ball up the middle to punt on 4th down. Time and time again it happened on Tomey’s team. Even when he left for Arizona he was conservative. His defense was very good though. I thought that we would have trick plays on special teams this year like the muddle huddle, but waited all year and nada. Maybe it was the head coaches’ philosphy which is why I prefer an offensive head coach.

  570. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 12:23 am

I don’t follow BYU football to know what the problem with Anae was. As Offensive Coordinator his record is as follows.

    2005: 6-6 (T-2nd MWC)

    2006: 11-2 (1st MWC)

    2007: 11-2 (1st MWC)

    2008: 10-3 (3rd MWC)

    2009: 11-2 (2nd MWC)

    2010: 7-6 (T-3rd MWC)

This type of record may be horrible for BYU, but I think I could live with it.

#317 – Garret. Thanks for posting John’s bio again. Crack me up. Great Man. Blessing to his family.

  574. Pride. December 7, 2011 12:41 am

    Exciting times.

  575. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 1:06 am

Tried to dig up some salaries of possible coaches that people have mentioned.

    Duane Akina ($400,000 @ Texas)

    Brian Norwood ($350,000 @ Baylor)

    Robert Anae ($150,000-$200,000 @)

Mark Banker ($350,000 @ Oregon State)

    Dino Babers (<$350,000 @ Baylor)

If these are potential candidates, is $700,000 + incentives enough to lure them away?

  576. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 1:22 am

I think it could work if UHAD is thinking of $700,000 as a base salary and incentives that theoretically could push it up to $900,000+.

If its $700,000 *including* incentives then we are up **** creek.

  577. Pride. December 7, 2011 1:27 am

Dino Babers is one of four finalists for the Eastern Illinois Head Coaching job.

  578. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 1:34 am

    Pride,

If EIU’s entire endowment ($33,000,000) has any relation to the amount they would pay for a head coach, Hawaii could afford him.

What are your thoughts on him as a potential UH hire if he doesn’t get selected for the EIU job?

  579. Pride. December 7, 2011 1:51 am

#581 – IWWTHM. All of the five possible coaches that you listed would do a great job.

  580. Pride. December 7, 2011 1:55 am

#581 – Have any of those guys listed even applied or inquired about the job?

  581. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 1:59 am

    Pride,

Not sure. Only thing that has been posted/said on radio is some guy who apparently knows Anae and spoke to him about a year ago. Anae said he would love to come back to Hawaii.

As for the rest, only the shadow/al’s birdie knows.

If UHAD wants Akina or if Punahou alumn’s are lobbying for him, I am guessing Edison Miyawaki will be consulted or part of the committee.

Then again, I bet Dr. Miyawaki will be part of the committee/consulted regardless.

  582. misterfudge December 7, 2011 2:56 am

Can’t afford Niumatololo nor should we go back to the triple option.

Another perspective on Coach Mack from a Warrior Alum.

    Adam Leonard:

“Just read David Graves comments on Coach Mack, and I respectfully disagree with some of his comments. Mack was not the best public speaker and at times it hindered him, but that did not take away from his understanding of football and his ability to prepare a proper game plan. Being a good public speaker doesn’t equal being a good leader. While I haven’t been around the program the last few years, I do know that serving others is the best way to demonstrate leadership. Mack embodied the leadership needed for the young men he coached by always being there for the players first. Everyone has there time and place for them to step up, Mack took advantage of his time in Hawaii and I know he will have success wherever his next destination may be. As far as Miano becoming the next head coach, I believe there are other coaches on staff that garner more respect than coach Miano. Again, I haven’t been around the last few years, but the most appealing option is not always the satisfy what’s best of interest.”

  591. d1shima December 7, 2011 6:16 am

    Solemn Greetings All.

    Never forget. December 7, 1941.

  592. Buffoman December 7, 2011 6:16 am

Folks may not like a defensive minded coach but if winning is important, you need defense, a heck of a running back and a very good o-line.

LSU is a top 3 or top 5 team as is the current Bama team because they have these elements. LSU has one advantage over Bama, a slightly better kicker.

But these teams have unbelievable defenses. They are so good, they are almost a part of the offense.

Oregon has a terrific offensive game. Who’d you pick to win in an Oregon v LSU match up?

I like watching LSU and Bama for their great running game and above all, their defense.

    That’s just my take.

High scoring games but no defense are also boring.

  593. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 6:22 am

How about this guy as the Defensive Coordinator:

    http://www.usctrojans.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/orgeron_ed00.html

I doubt that UH can afford him, though.

  594. Chee! December 7, 2011 6:22 am

#593 Great insight from a former Warrior, Team Captain, and future coach.

    Mahalo, LizK

  595. bigislandkurt December 7, 2011 6:24 am

Good points from Adam Leonard. But a head coach must be able to articulate his thoughts to his team and the public. He makes a strong statement against Miano. I’d take it with a grain of salt because he admits to not being around the team for the past two years. A lot can change in two years.

    Happy Wednesday Tsaikos.

    BIK

  596. Chee! December 7, 2011 6:24 am

#595 LSU is highly favored in that match-up but Oregon has a punchers chance…

  597. Chee! December 7, 2011 6:26 am

    #600 BAMM!!

  598. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 6:27 am

Oklahoma State seems to be a budding Cradle of Coaches in that their last 2, and soon to be 3, Offensive Coordinators have gone onto becoming successful head coaches.

  599. d1shima December 7, 2011 6:29 am

    LSU won already

  600. d1shima December 7, 2011 6:30 am

but I wouldn’t say the Ducks’ D plays with feet of clay either.

  601. Buffoman December 7, 2011 6:39 am

d1 no I believe they (Ducks) have a reasonably good defense.

LSU reminds me of the Bears team that won the superbowl. Their defense was just downright scary and as I recall they had a “fairly decent” (tongue in cheek, folks) running back. LSU does not have a defense that is scary at that level but they are the deciding factor in many of the wins.

  602. d1shima December 7, 2011 6:41 am

Just re-checked the the Blog Title. It is still The Warrior Beat.

Staying habut about the decision that the School made regarding the future of Hawaii football is your personal decision. I suggest another venue, perhaps along the line of a blog called I (heart) Mack or similar, would be a good place to continue to undermine the Administration and its decision to move the football program forward.

AD Donovan, Chancellor Hinshaw, and President Greenwood are still part of the team that I support!

  603. Buffoman December 7, 2011 6:42 am

If Banker can bring Cav along, he’d be my top choice. Like getting two for 1. o-line has not been quite as good since that guy left.

    I like Babers also.

  604. BigHiloFan2 December 7, 2011 6:45 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    JOHN COLLINS

Las Vegas will be missed. Great man, great friend, thankful to call him my friend to his face.

    Have a great day Tsaikos.

  605. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 6:55 am

Mark Banker would be a good choice. He’s made a name for himself in the Pac-10. Recruits Hawaii very well and knows Hawaii. Seems to has an affinity for the islands, despite being at UH for only one season on Bob Wagner’s staff in 95.

Yes d1, a solemn good morning all the way around. Dec. 7th.

Hard to shake the feeling of loss for John. Such a powerful and wonderful spirit, he had a way of connecting deeply to people the first time he met or spoke to them. Sweety and I were blessed to have made that connection. Miss him. Thanks for posting his bio Garret.
