Lee services set; Colt to CFL

The memorial service for Thomas Lee Sr. is set for March 7 at Diamond Head Memorial Park.

He was the father of football coaches Tommy Lee, Ron Lee and Cal Lee. He would have turned 95 on March 8.

Deepest sympathies to the Lee family.

Colt Brennan called the WB to say he was grateful for the opportunity to continue his football career.  He signed a two-year contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (great name, by the way). He said he is finally healed from the car accident in November 2010.

This afternoon, the Warriors will be conducting tryouts for football hopefuls.

The combine-like event is limited to undergraduates who already are enrolled at UH-Manoa. The prize is a walk-on berth on the spring roster.

* * * * *

John Wa‘a’s early commitment gives the Warriors three members of the 2011 All-State first team. Running back Steven Lakalaka of Punahou and linebacker Benny Fonua of Kahuku join the Warriors this summer. Wa‘a, a 6-foot-3, 280-pound offensive lineman, will be a Kahuku senior in the fall. Wa‘a has drawn comparisons to UH lineman Dave Lefotu, not just in talent — both are agile and bruising blockers — but in their willingness to make their commitments early. Lefotu, who will be a third-year sophomore in the fall, committed to UH before the start of his senior year at Pearl City.

Former UH d-lineman Vaughn Meatoga’s strong showing at the NFL Scouting Combine gives him some breathing room for next week’s UH pro day in Carson, Calif.

After reviews, these are Meatoga’s official combine bests:

• 40-yard dash — 4.93 seconds.

• Vertical jump — 30 inches.

• Broad jump — 9 feet.

• L-drill — 7.12 seconds.

• Pro-agility drill — 4.21 seconds

• 225-pound bench press — 27 reps.

He also had a good score on the Wonderlic exam, which isn’t surprising. He was named the scholar-athlete at the Warriors’ postseason banquet in December. Meatoga most likely can stand on his speed and jumping results to focus on position drills at pro day. Meatoga is projected as an every-down lineman who can play nose tackle, defensive tackle or defensive end.

Former UH receiver Royce Pollard also has signed up with Beyond Wealth Sports, a sports-representative company. NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia is part of the group. Shane Austin, a former UH quarterback, also inked with Beyond Wealth.

That’s Austin (far left), Pollard (third from left), Garcia (third from right) and Pollard’s father, Anthony (far right):

congrats to vaughn for putting up such great numbers. one service said he should get plucked between the 4th to 7th round.

  17. Garret February 28, 2012 4:53 am

Welcome to the Warriors John Wa‘a!

Wa‘a is a great early commit for Coach Chow and his staff and a very positive sign for local recruiting for UH!

  18. Garret February 28, 2012 4:54 am

Best of luck to all those trying out at the walk-on tryouts today. Some worthy men will be able to follow their dreams this spring because of how they did today.

  19. Garret February 28, 2012 4:55 am

Great job by Vaughn Meatoga at the combine! I hope that he’s drafted as high as possible and goes to a team with a need where he fits their system well.

  20. Garret February 28, 2012 4:58 am

It sounds like BYU wasn’t interested in joining the Big East during last year’s negotiations because they are aggressively looking to join the Big 12. BYU and Louisville would fill out the conference to 12 schools in time for the TV deal that starts in 2016.

Talks between the two parties have ramped up over the past couple of weeks however, with discussions revolving around the possibility of BYU and Louisville being added in time for the 2013-14 athletics season. Such a move would get the conference back to its original number of 12 member schools, and provide it with the opportunity to hold a championship game for football in December of 2013.

    Welcome back, ST!

Finally, the door is unlocked. Was gonna have the blog mascot break down the door if it was any longer.

Congrats to Vaughn. Best wishes to everyone participating in next week’s Pro Day.

Best wishes to all the walk-on hopefuls.

  26. Da Punchbowl Kid February 28, 2012 6:11 am

Doesn’t surprise me that Vaughn scored so well on the Wonderlic. He’s got a good head on his shoulders. And, as the stats show, the rest of him is in top shape too! He is truly deserving of any successes he attains at the next level. Vaughn has been the model Warrior since HS. Good luck to him!

  27. Da Punchbowl Kid February 28, 2012 6:12 am

    Hey jm@#%&!

I second your wishes for the walk-on hopefuls.

  32. Da Punchbowl Kid February 28, 2012 6:18 am

Nothing like the thrill of an early commit of Wa’a’s caliber. Welcome to to the Warriors!

  33. whitey February 28, 2012 6:21 am

Thank you John Wa’a for your committment to da warriors.

  34. d1shima February 28, 2012 6:22 am

Nice(?) pic of Vaughn Meatoga from the combine in today’s edition.

  35. WarriorNY February 28, 2012 6:30 am

How are we hearing more about Shane Austin than Bryant Moniz in pre-draft workouts? I think Royce Pollard was incredibly underrated in his time as a Warrior. Good luck to all the Warriors.

  36. Slugger February 28, 2012 6:31 am

    Good morning, gang!

    Welcome, John Wa’a!

Good luck to all of the guys competing for a place on the team.

Hurrah for Shane, Royce and Vaughn! Good luck, guys!

    laters…

  37. kapakahi February 28, 2012 6:36 am

Hoping that Wa’a’s early commitment helps Warriors land fellow Red Raider and 2011 All-State first-teammer RB Aofaga Wily….

  38. kapakahi February 28, 2012 6:46 am

    ST,

With so many seniors from last season….alot of whom were also key contributors to a successful 2010 season, hopefully you’re still going up to the Home Depot Center next week to cover Pro Day….so that you can give us the full results….like you’ve been doing for past years.

BTW, what UH coaches (past and/or current) is UH sending up for Pro Day?

Would hope that Norm Chow sends both to support past Warriors (and not just current Warriors) as part of his 4th goal to “prepare players for the NFL”.

While though the seniors played for the previous coaching staff, they are all still WARRIORS FOR LIFE!!!

  39. kapakahi February 28, 2012 6:58 am

I would hope that JD and Norm Chow send both Rich Miano (as the former UH liaison with the NFL who’s still on contract with UH ’til the end of March and still available on-island) and Tony Tuioti (who coached Vaughn Meatoga, Kaniela Tuipulotu, Zach Masch, and Liko Satele) to next week’s Pro Day at the Home Depot Center to support the past Warriors….and to ensure a smoother transition for future UH Pro Days.

    That just only makes sense!!!

  40. Shoko February 28, 2012 7:05 am

Congrats to Vaughn. Just out of curiosity, I wonder what his score was on the Wonderlic, or is that confidential?

  41. tom mui February 28, 2012 7:09 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

And welcome back ST! Glad you’re back – was getting withdrawal symtoms!

And welcome to Mr. Wa’a and Mr. Mike Andrade!

  42. djmitcho February 28, 2012 7:17 am

Good Morning everyone! It’s so nice to wake up someplace that’s not 20 degrees outside. Wish I could make it to Oahu for a CC or something, but I’m just happy to be in the 808 state. Have a good one everyone!

  43. Will-I-Am February 28, 2012 7:20 am

Soooooo glad your back ST. Remember, What happens in Vegas, Stays….. on Facebook.

  44. A-TEAM February 28, 2012 7:32 am

Is Pro day at the Home Depot Center open to the public. I’d like t go support the Warriors here on the mainland.

  45. eagle February 28, 2012 7:41 am

Good on Andrade; Great on Wa’a; Welcome All !

    Go Pros !

Lookin’ Forward to Recognizable Potential Diamonds in the Try-Out Rough …

  46. Stephen Tsai February 28, 2012 7:57 am

    Will-I-Am:

I saw that on a T-shirt. Pretty funny.

  47. Stephen Tsai February 28, 2012 7:57 am

I think there’s a viewing area for the public at pro day.

  48. Stephen Tsai February 28, 2012 7:59 am

    Kapakahi:

You’re correct that there should be a representative from the previous staff at pro day. Before the weight-in, there’s usually a period where the coaches speak about the players to the scouts.

  49. Stephen Tsai February 28, 2012 8:01 am

At the Great Aloha run, each person has a computer chip that shows when a participant crosses the starting line and finish line. I wonder if that’s possible for combines. It seems to give a more accurate reading.

  50. Joe Shmo February 28, 2012 8:02 am

    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/vaughn-meatoga?id=2532910

    5.00 40yd

  51. Joe Shmo February 28, 2012 8:04 am

Why do you call it the L-Drill? It’s the 3-Cone. And why say officially 4.93, when it’s not?

  52. Derek February 28, 2012 8:11 am

When did UH get a football commitment this early? Chow and Co. working hard. Hope it’s a trend. Any word on the big fella?

  53. Couch potato February 28, 2012 8:26 am

Derek, when Lefotu committed, that’s when.

  54. papajoe2 February 28, 2012 8:26 am

@58, I was wondering the same thing. Wasn’t he tripping to LSU this past weekend? al?

  55. papajoe2 February 28, 2012 8:27 am

forgot I shouldn’t use numbers refering to the post. ST got a quick trigger finger.

  56. Couch potato February 28, 2012 8:37 am

papajoe2, you can use numbers. the time and date numbers.

  57. cheepono February 28, 2012 8:38 am

lefotu committed during the summer going into his senior year.

i think wa’a is the earliest commit we’ve ever had. and on top of that he is a quality recruit and a bonafide top 10 or maybe even top 5 in the state.

is the SA gonna do an article on wa’a’s commitment?

bummer that andrade’s commitment only got mentioned in the prep notebook. anything regarding UH football needs to be at the forefront of sports media in hawaii! gotta show the local boys lots of love and be proud that they decided to stay home and represent.

  58. A-House February 28, 2012 8:46 am

Andrade’s LOI was in a small article in the sports section today; page 3 or 4 – maybe 10 short lines.

But, it said it was his dream to play for the Warriors!!!!!!!

  59. A-House February 28, 2012 8:47 am

Power is like sand. The more you squeeze the faster it disappears.

  60. Stephen Tsai February 28, 2012 8:52 am

    Joe Shmo:

The results posted here are the amended ones, at least according to a couple of scouts.

Meatoga also initially had 28 reps, but one was discounted for not locking his elbows.

  61. Stephen Tsai February 28, 2012 8:56 am

I’m trying to remember how far out Billy Ray Stutzmann was when he committed. I do recall he graduated early, and was at spring practice.

Early commitments are always risky. But a guy like Lefotu committed early because he knew where he wanted to go. I’m sure he would have received more interest if he were on the open market. Same with Wa‘a.

  62. Couch potato February 28, 2012 8:57 am

A-House, huh? about the power stuff.

nice, nice recruits. still waiting to see about the one sitting on the fence. looks like a push is being made to make him fall on the Warrior side of the fence.

and what is happening with the basketbows? regroup fellas.

  63. kapakahi February 28, 2012 8:58 am

    ST,

SO….will you still be flying up to LA to go to the Home Depot Center @ Carson next week to cover Pro Day….so that you can give us the full measurement and test results….like you’ve been doing for past years?

  64. Couch potato February 28, 2012 8:59 am

i think Stutzmann committed in the summer.

  65. cheepono February 28, 2012 9:08 am

i remember lefotu committing early but don’t think that stopped a bunch of bcs programs from still going after him. committing to a school early does not hinder other schools and coaches from still pursuing them. if a kid can play they’ll garner the interest regardless of if they’ve committed or not.

  66. al February 28, 2012 9:10 am

i think billy ray committed in his junior year.

vaughn meatoga was also a very early commit out of kamehameha schools.

  67. Buffoman February 28, 2012 9:11 am

The BIG prize would probably be if that Koehler (sp?) young man decided that he is a Warrior, like Mr. Wa`a, given the press he’s gotten.

With all the attention headed his way, I’d say it would probably be tough for our Coach to get him to stay at home. I’m a bit off base as I believe if he is as good as stated, he could go to “Midwest North Central State College” and still be a top draft choice. If he is as good, he does not need the exposure, the scouts will find him (like that very large young Polynesian man, not from the islands who went to Idaho and now starts for the 49ers). It’s just whether he wants to go away or play for the 808 at that stage.

  68. cheepono February 28, 2012 9:12 am

not sure if it was mentioned or not but colt brennan signed with the saskatchewan rough riders of the cfl. still rooting for him!

  69. al February 28, 2012 9:12 am

re: billy ray. remember that he enrolled at the university one semester sooner than the rest of his graduating class.

  70. al February 28, 2012 9:13 am

cheepono…i believe they had the rights to him and could have passed him up but decided to give it a try. lets hope this will be another “second chance” for colt.

  71. al February 28, 2012 9:18 am

i believe that the blurb on mike andrade by paul honda was/is a courtesy call by the sports editor since it was paul’s scoop.

i am sure that stephen will follow up in a few days. andrade is a great get at this point. he has so much potential that we opened our 2012 book to sign him.

we should hear about the san mateo kid in a week, before we close the book on 2012.

  72. Stephen Tsai February 28, 2012 9:24 am

    Cheepono:

I did not know that. Wow. A lot of things happened the past couple of days.

  73. 808Bowler February 28, 2012 9:27 am

Congrats to vaughn and waa. Chow keeps bringing them in. recruiting all year long. My condolences to the Lee family.

  74. cheepono February 28, 2012 9:29 am

it’s been a pretty quiet off season ST and you went on vacay the one weekend there was a ton of UH football related news. lol

very well deserved though. appreciate all your hard work. i didn’t realize how addicted to the blog i was until the 4 day hiatus. was starting to get the shakes and wearing down my F5 key.

And, yes, will be doing a one-day trip to pro day.

  80. al February 28, 2012 9:54 am

good move on wena’s part to leave the laptop at home.

  81. A-House February 28, 2012 9:55 am

    ST:

Sounds like you were on Hawaiian Flt leaving Vegas at 1:55 am, but was delayed for 11 hours!

If so, hope you were well compensated! But, don’t take the breakfast burrito!!!

  82. Stephen Tsai February 28, 2012 9:59 am

    Nope. Took United.

We were delayed out of Las Vegas because there were too many carry-on bags on the right side of the vomit comet, so they had to move bags to the left. We landed while the connecting flight was boarding. But we made it on board. Plus, there were people older than me trying to make it, so they held the plane. That’s the one thing about United: It likes to fly full.

I heard the women’s basketball team had some horror stories a week ago traveling on American. They had to stay overnight in L.A.

  83. al February 28, 2012 10:09 am

someone said that the san mateo kid did not visit lsu this past week and he may trip this weekend.

  86. duffer February 28, 2012 10:14 am

Still get Emily Hartong and Monica Stauber. 😎 🙂

For the past 6 years ST has chronicled, literally, a daily quip about the people and the going ons that make up UH athletics.

Now, I love what I do for a living and enjoy sharing my passion with others from time to time. But honestly gang, if I had to share it with all you clowns every single day I’d go fricken MENTO!!

Mahalo ST, for not only sharing with us your passion but, at least pretending to be sane and civil when you do.

    Welcome back, my friend.

Welcome back Mr Tsai and yes there was a void for several days. You are missed. So glad that Mr. Andrade signed his LOI to UH. Great to hear about Mr. Waa from Kahuku…keep them coming. I love to see our local players staying home to represent the university and the State.

so you know why he goes to wvb games.

  103. cheepono February 28, 2012 11:23 am

are we no longer recruiting fanaika?

according to mike andrade’s coach at konawaena:

Walters said Hawaii also considered offering the scholarship to an offensive lineman on the mainland but gave it to Andrade instead.

  104. Couch potato (hacker) February 28, 2012 11:23 am

    alrighty then!

  105. cheepono February 28, 2012 11:24 am

i hope what that means is they were gonna offer it to *another* o-lineman on the mainland and fanaika’s offer is still on the table.

A few paragraphs follow the quote below. It’s on page 2 of Peter King’s MMQB column.

“We lost two coaches from our offensive staff and the prospect of going forward, the responsibility that I have, while I am very interested in his career, I think he will be an outstanding coach for the New York Giants going forward, but we have to put our hands around our situation first.”

    — Giants coach Tom Coughlin, on the club denying permission to Kevin Gilbride Jr., an offensive assistant, to interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be their quarterback coach.

Colt Brennan signs with CFL team

    By Star-Advertiser staff

    POSTED: 11:41 a.m. HST, Feb 28, 2012

Former University of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan has signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, the team announced today.

After a steller career at UH, where he led the Warriors to the Sugar Bowl after the 2007 season, Brennan was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL draft. He started strong, leading NFL rookies in touchdown passes in the preseason, completing 36 of 53 passes for 411 yards and three touchdowns.

But he was placed on injured reserve because of hamstring and hip injuries. He was released by the Redskins in 2010 and picked up by the Oakland Raiders, who also cut him.

At UH, Brennan was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2007. He broke numerous records, including the NCAA Division I record for most touchdown passes in a single season with 58 and an NCAA record for highest pass completion percentage (70.4 percent).

  114. Old Diver February 28, 2012 11:55 am

At UH graduation it looked like Vaughn was the only athlete sitting with what I believe was the marine biology graduates. I had two thoughts, he’s one smart guy and there aren’t many potential football recruits in the marine biology program.

Andrade is a beast. Gonna be interesting to see how he measures up to the big boys of college football. Quite different from D2 BIIF. Norm Chow sees something he likes.

The Mike Andrade commit to UH even made it to the Hawaii Civil Beat.

It was the University of Hawaii football team’s last 2012 full-ride scholarship, according to Cliff Walters. New Warriors coach Norm Chow used it for one of Walters’ players, and the Konawaena football coach said Hawaii won’t regret its decision.

Others on the fence better make a move soon or their indecision will continue to stick them in the butt.

  133. Garret February 28, 2012 1:56 pm

Looks like one of the first things that Karl Benson will be doing at the Sun Belt is changing its name…one of the suggestions I saw was the Sun Beast Conference? He’s also going to try to expand their conference and the tug-of-war with the WAC could be interesting…and affect UH in a variety of ways down the line.

Those within the Sun Belt know about the strides made over the last few years, particularly in football. But take a poll around college athletics, and Joe Fan is rarely aware of such progress. It’s perhaps a testament to the Sun Belt that its success has accelerated at a higher rate than its brand, although some would say the two are always linked.

Upon the recent announcement of Karl Benson as the Sun Belt’s new commissioner, the incoming boss said he would try to snag southeastern schools to come to the Sun Belt. That includes Louisiana Tech, perhaps a couple FCS schools and certainly current CUSA members.

    Go get ’em Colt….

He’ll look good in that green Riders jersey.

  143. Garret February 28, 2012 3:13 pm

Note that Colt’s team signed 2 QBs today, here is the other QB that Colt will need to beat out…and then he may have to beat out one of the returning QBs who played for the team last year. Colt won’t just be given the job…but the competition will be good for him and I hope that he is able to show them what he can do.

Willy, who is 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, is the leading passer in the history of the University of Buffalo’s football program. A starter all four years, he established school records for completions (849), attempts (1,322), passing yards (8,748), touchdowns (52), total offence (8,639) and completion percentage (64.2).

Willy signed as a free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2009 after being undrafted. He was released by the Ravens in August of that year, only to resurface with the Indianapolis Colts the following December. He was on the Colts’ active roster for one late-season game in 2009. The Colts cut him in July of 2010.

Willy spent the 2010 season with the United Football League’s Las Vegas Locomotives. In 2011, Willy had stints with the New York Jets and San Diego Chargers.

Didnt know much about Mike Andrade until I watched his tapes. Wow! Not only is he quick as greased lightening, but this rodeo star mows over QBs like he is dismountng and throwing down a calf.

Very little in wasted moves, every extension of his limbs are working quickly, efficiently.

His hands are quick, sure and powerful.

My first impression was the competition against him is weak, but as you watch him, you can see a no nonsense, deadly force, wanting to put a hurt on his opponent.

Can hardly wait until he faces quality in the trenches with his teammates to define the level of his assests.

Mike Andrade is worthy of placing a tag to track his development and progress as a warrior. JMO. Andrade is a steal. great catch by our coaches!

Now that Chow has Mike Andrade signed, would like him to drop about 10-15 lbs., with his speed and tenacity would make an excellent middle linebacker.

  166. Ipu Man (Aloha Stadium Payphone) February 28, 2012 6:57 pm

Welcome Mr. Andrade to UH. At 6′, 260 pounds, I think coach would

like to see him add muscle and weight to CRUSH his opponents, not

get skinny and run over by a big back or blocking pulling guard…

btw, he should, after he graduates from UH and retires from the NFL,

come back to Hawaii and open up a little department store in Waikiki…

  173. Gary February 28, 2012 7:12 pm

I cannot believe all the sick, disgusting comments directed at Colt Brennan. What did he do that was so wrong? He directed UH to a marveous season and took the team to the top ten in the nation and the Sugar Bowl. He helped put UH football on the radar for recruiting. He gave up at shot at the NFL after his junior year to return to the Warriors and lead them to an unbelievable season with come-from-behind wins that would have done credit to John Elway! Now you attack the guy? Shame on all of you who have such short memories.

Go Colt! Best of luck in Canana. You are a class act!

  180. kev-1 February 28, 2012 8:43 pm

Since some feel it is okay to insult and bash a person who they don’t even know, we should get the opportunity to do the same.

For those that feel the need to call Colt Brennan an embarrassment or a let down or overrated or whatever you all like to say . . . get a life. I guarantee you that he has more of a life than you do. He is living at least part of his dream, while losers like you live yours through people like him.

I’ll throw myself in there too. We like to see athletes like Colt succeed because it makes us feel good. It makes us proud. There is one difference between people like me and those who like to slam Colt Brennan . . . if he doesn’t succeed or suffers a hardship, people like me feel for him and hope for the best. On the other hand, there are others that are at such low depths in their own lives that his struggles only make them focus more on their own dissatisfaction with life. They start to feel worse about themselves and how much their life sucks, so they look for the nearest football blog to insult the man who has taken away their little imaginary life that they thought they had. They start to look in the mirror and realize that they don’t like what they see . . . insulting Colt might make them feel better.

Sick of the f____ing a-holes who have negative crap to say about a man who has never done anything but good here, especially for football fans. Get a grip on your own life and leave his alone.

  181. kev-1 February 28, 2012 8:45 pm

With that said, good luck Colt. Get that arm cranked up and hit the gym. Go out there and win that job. Have fun playing the game that you love. Guess I am CFL fan now.

    How can watch????

  182. kev-1 February 28, 2012 8:49 pm

Unrelated note . . . If anyone here watches NASCAR (I may be the only local person in Hawaii who is addicted to it), how bout that race last night?

Daggum!!!! Junior almost got his first win in a loooooong time if it wasn’t Blocking Biffle. Heck of a race . . . hope there are some that got the chance to enjoy it (after all the delays anyway, but still).

    Okay, sorry . . . I know . . . NASCAR? Really Kev-1? Yes, really. Love it!

Hoping Colt is given the chance to run free in the Canadian plains.

    Go, Colt!

  210. LizKauai (iPad) February 29, 2012 4:36 am

Glad I missed all the trolling… Thanks, ST.

Congrats to the scholar-SoftBows. love the diversity on the team! Hope Coach Coolen has his eye on Saui’s sister. It would be nice to have another brother-sister Warrior/Wahine combo from Kauai!

  211. kapakahi February 29, 2012 5:00 am

    ST,

Hopefully you attended the Tuesday afternoon walk-on tryouts and will report on prospective candidates in this morning’s blog.

My guess that any OL walk-on prospect showing any size and/or potential will have a good opportunity to make the Spring Roster….since only about 10 Olinemen (excluding Dew and Shigematsu who are still rehabbing) were otherwise slated to be available for Spring Ball.

According to BigWave, former Class of 2011 Saint Louis OL Maxi Miyashita (6-3, 305)….also Saint Louis 2010-2011 Student Body President….was supposed to among the OL walk-on candidates trying out yesterday afternoon.
