The next phase
Four times a week the past couple of months, Ruben Guzman would work on position drills for two hours. After that, he would do conditioning drills. In the evening, he would go to the gym, sometimes spending up to three hours on various strength and cardio exercises.
Guzman is a punter.
UH kicker Tyler Hadden “told me we have a new strength coach (Gary Beemer), and he’s very strict,” Guzman said. “I didn’t want to be that one guy trying to keep up with the other players. I wanted to keep up.”
Guzman arrived in town yesterday evening. Today is the first day of UH’s Summer Session II. Guzman is signed up for two on-line classes.
“I have some big shoes to fill after Alex (Dunnachie),” Guzman said. “I’m looking forward to it.”
Wide receiver Vasquez Haynes said he was “counting down the days” until he joined the Warriors. Haynes, a transfer from Blinn College in Texas, arrived in Hawaii this past weekend.
“It was hard not being in Hawaii, where I wanted to be,” Haynes said. “It was difficult waiting. I guess good things happen when you’re patient.”
Haynes recently completed work on an associate degree at Blinn.
“I worked out at Blinn,” Haynes said. “Being in the Texas heat got me right to come out here and compete.”
There are 23 days before the start of UH’s training camp. With the completion of Summer Session I, some players returned to the mainland. They will adhere to the conditioning program there. Players do not receive scholarship checks when they are enrolled in Summer Session II.
But several, including quarterbacks Taylor Graham and Sean Schroeder, chose to stay to continue conditioning drills and unsupervised workouts in Manoa.
Kick it up a notch Warriors!
Let’s Go Rainbow Warriors!
Welcome Vasquez!
Gotta have the love & the passion!
Do students taking on-line classes have to pay the student activity fee?
The players are being “Beemered”!
Beemer’em up Gary!
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!!
ST – Not sure if it’s up to date, but is the student activity and program fee $11 per semester and $5 per summer session?
Imua Warriors!!!
Beat USC!!!!!!!!!!
I think it’s at least $50 per semester (because that includes admission to UH games).
I saw my son’s tuition bill for the summer. It includes about $400 in comprehensive fees. What the heck does that mean? Is that like the out-the-door fee for a leased car?
Thanks ST. That sounds more accurate. It didn’t seem to be very much, but then again, all the ancillary student fees add up.
Beemer never slows down.
What I like iis that he was not bothered by the usual pay lag. C’mon, state employees. You know what I’m talking about. You’re hired and you wait and wait and wait … until you get your first check. The good news is if you ever leave, you’ll be getting checks for the next two months.
But I digress.
Beemer rented an apartment and pretty much has paid his own way until UH gets the books up to date.
Haka:
When I was at UH, tuition was something like $240.40 per semester.
Of course, minimum wage was $3.35 an hour back then.
Good morning Tsaikos!
Welcome to all the new Warriors!
$400 for fees? How many classes is he taking? I thought 2 per session was manageable.
Used to be about 6 weeks before you got your first State paycheck. Is it still the same?
Just as an alert, DoD civilian furloughs start this week. If you have an appointment between now and the end of Sept, you should probably call to confirm it. If you are trying to get an appointment, good luck.
Good morning Tsaikos….
Woo Hoo…Top Twenty…
Good job Warriors….Keep on training and pushing the limits….!!!
JM#### …last time I checked it was still the same…three pay cycles…or six weeks. Sucks at first, but when you retire or leave it’s nice…LOL
Jm:
It’s for the fall semester.
It’s better than when my eldest went to college on the mainland. It was $32,0000 a year. People told me, “Oh, that’s not too bad.” Really? Because that’s 10 trips to Vegas a year.
Some things never change with UH and their payroll system. Years ago I taught some part-time classes at an unnamed local community college (K_ _). When I inquired about when my first paycheck would be coming, I was tersely told “at the end of November.” I started teaching in August. I found out that the reason for the extended delay was that someone in HR placed my payroll papers in the wrong tray and the person in charge had left for her vacation. The person I spoke to was also very snarky that I had the audacity to question the work they did. My co-worker advised me to “back off” and not get HR riled up. It’s no wonder that that entire department has been purged recently.
Ha! Costs like tuition always seems like a lot at the time and minimum wage always seems too little. I guess you could roll all the student fees into the tuition cost and not know what the heck you are paying for. It’s “comprehensive” insurance that they get money for something. Hey, it’s transparency.
That ain’t workin’ that’s the way you do it
Get your money for nothin’ get your chicks for free…
J(J), Jm:
I like how they did the pay lag to save money. Trouble is, once the cycle is established, then you need another lag. I think the problem is the state needs an infusion of money. But enough about the new backseat-safety-belt law.
Why am I thinking about Toby from “The Office” right now?
#12. ST,
Remember when minimum wage was $2,40 per hour during our HS days.
I taught at KCC for a couple of semesters.
I remember having to pay additional taxes because not enough state taxes were withheld.
Then this past year, I received notice I’m owed money form a retirement fund that I didn’t know I was contributing to. (Whoops, just dangled a participle in public again.)
#19…ST….Hey, it’s all about SAFETY….. 🙂 LMAO
#22….at least it’s just a participle you’re dangling….LOL
Kapakahi:
Oh, yeah.
I remember netting $18 a day at the pineapple cannery.
Then again, I remember sweating into a bunch of pineapple cans. I still can’t eat canned pineapple chunks.
J (J)
My participle needed to breathe. I think my syntax was too tight.
Syntax.
I think I paid that in Vegas last month.
Oh, I’m just cracking myself up today.
Kinda hard for a lot of the UH players to remain in Hawaii when there are no scholarship checks coming in. Hawaii isn’t a cheap place to live. Not like in places like Boise, ID or Logan, UT where rents are manageable and a gallon of milk goes for around $2.50.
Good morning everyone!
Welcome to Guzman and Haynes!
I always remembered the story former UH HC Larry Price told of some of his players in Hale Anuenue living off of corned flakes and mangoes picked in and around Moiliili during the off-season.
You know I was just thinking…
But no like say it…
But was just thinking everyone must be thinking..
But no like bachi…
But have you noticed…neva mind.
Go Warriors!
Go Wahine!
Good Morning Hawaii.
ST – whew, I thought the tuition had really gone up for summer. $32K is what I’m looking at paying for Screecher’s tuition.
J(J) – a contractor I used to work with told me it took almost a year to get paid by the State. 🙄 It was back in the 90’s, have things changed?
UH vs UNLV
I just received a confirmation email from UNLV stating the following:
“Since you purchased tickets in the past, the tickets will just be $20 & $45. All other fees will be waived.”
So, if you get your tickets through the UH ticket office, there will probably be a $10 per ticket handing fee and I doubt they will be on the 50 yard line.
I’m trying to coordinate all of this with Tom, so please email one of us if you are interested. My only ground rules are that you don’t order more than your immediate group needs and extras don’t end up for re-sale on a ticket outlet for a profit. I don’t make a profit on these. (Except for the generosity of a few Tsaikos who send me a little extra for my time & efforts.) Also note, that the cost of certified mail is not included in the above prices – probably around $5 or so per order. (Not per ticket.)
UH Fees are as follows,
Student Athletic Fee – $50
Broadcast Media Fee – $3
Student Center/Rec Fee – $175
Student Center Program Fee – $15
Student Gov’t Fee – $15
Student Health Center Fee – $68
Student Publication Fee – $13
Student Activity Fee – $11
Student UPASS (TheBus) – $30
Ruben Guzman and Jackson Dionne punting, Ceejay Santos, Mark Monteiro and Tyler Hadden kicking. Looks like Harding can concentrate on receiving instead of squibbing. Can’t wait to see the impact Vasquez Haynes, Marcus Kemp, Ammon Baker and Terrance Polk make. Taylor Graham probably can’t wait to get some reps in with the incoming WRs, considering his work ethics.
I still think Chris Gant will be a star this year.
Good Morning Gangeez!
My producer friend sometimes waits 6 months to a year to get paid for a job. He often has put his own money up front to do the job. Funny how them things work.
Looks like Beemer’s doin’ it up nicely. There has to be a good pun somewhere in there. Suggestions?
What’s the “broadcast media” fee?
@40,
My guess is that its for KTUH radio.
The players could say, “Beem me up, Gary,” but I don’t think they want to earn extra reps, as they are all learning first hand what getting beemed is all about. Great to hear Beemer’s doing a great job. Should help with preventing injuries, if the team can stay off skateboards, scooters, bikes, and mopeds.
ST – have any of the new MVB players arrived on campus yet?
“Beef me up Gary!!!!”
Stephen have you:
Seen RJ Hollis
Heard anything on Terrence Polk & Darzil Washington
Spoken to Kwamane Bowens
“Beemer’s Builders – Size, Power and Speed are our specialty.”
does gary drive a beemer?
Can’t believe Kiffin made the top five worst coaches by Sports Illustrated. He should be alone in that category.
“Lane Kiffin, USC. Any confidence inspired by a breakthrough 10-2 campaign in 2011 was shattered by last year’s 7-6 implosion, when Kiffin’s USC squad — without question — finished as the biggest underachiever in the country.”

Great Morning All!
Sounds like Coach Beemer is already making an impact on the Impactors! 🙂
….not saying that there’s a whole ‘nother level but
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSV3tdQ6gWY
…some guys are just better than a cup-a-joe in the morning. 😉
…it took 5 months. 🙄
“If it feels good, you ain’t doin’ it right!”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVFl0j8mwPs
#50…but not better than A-Joe in the mornin’….LOL
Dayum! Thanks for that last link, d1! I just had to jump up and rip off twenty reps… on my 3 pound dumb bells!
Reading Dave Reardon’s column in the paper, I felt a “twinge” of anger at the MLB clubs who may or may not conspire to “draft” Hawaii baseball players in the later rounds because they know that a few dollars dangled will “hook” them up with a possible great catch. Am I too sensitive about this? Did I not understand what he was trying to convey to his readers? Is there really a disparity or sorts? Dummy, it’s just a business and pay the lowest dollar for the product!!!!!!!!!!
For example, if the Hawaii catcher is the “best defensive” catcher in the entire western region ( according to Dave), why the call in the 20th round? Are the current catchers on all MLB teams and their backups that great that this is not a critical position for any team? Reardon feel otherwise.
Is this same with other sports? I do recall that the Pistons drafted Bob Nash in the first round – like the 8th player chosen in 1972, but since then we saw Kolten Wong in the 2nd round and then my mind goes blank——————.
doggone it Sarge, lookie at all them spam – looks like a Hawaiian is loose and looking for a meal!
In early 2006 when the Honolulu Advertiser reported that football season ticket renewals were down, I wrote a Letter to the Editor suggesting that smart fans would use the opportunity to pick up good seats. The team looked like it was on the brink of breaking out. What followed were two of the best seasons by the UH football team.
We may be in a similar situation. The players look like they’re ready. Good time to pick up season tickets if you don’t have any.
surprising article on the UH kicking specialists. i believe it left no kicker out.

Sorry KK just got on. Maybe next time.
a-house: you are probably right about a bias against hawaii players. there will always be a few exceptions. jerome williams was drafted in the 1st round in ’99. sid fernandez went in the 3rd round in ’81. ashley lelie was drafted in the 1st round in ’02. ikaika alama-francis went in the 2nd round in ’07. david veikune 2nd rd in ’09. travis laboy 2nd rd in ’04.
And a good afternoon to everyone.
UH ticket sales over the last 8 years according to USA Today.
2012 $6,709,661
2011 $7,426,795
2010 $6,908,034
2009 $7,190,570
2008 $8,553,500
2007 $7,921,998
2006 $7,441,570
2005 $7,330,652
Safe to say winning cures all.
Nice hype on the S&C.
SPAM still stay.
A-House, the Hawaii catcher that was drafted is one of the smaller catchers out there. He may be one of the best defensive catchers in the western region but there are other regions out there. Teams also look at size and offensive numbers. Take a look at the top 20 rated catchers before the draft and the top 20 catchers that were drafted and you’ll get an idea what MLB teams are looking for.
I don’t think there is a bias out there since there are local MLB scouts.
Here’s Rex Ryan during the Running of the Bulls. Pretty impressive he made it to four seconds considering…
“Struggling to hop the wall as the bull comes through, Rex yells “Hold on!” at the four-second mark.”
http://deadspin.com/there-is-now-video-of-rex-ryan-escaping-a-charging-bull-710946044
Sorry, slow news day and scrounging for something worth passing on to the blog is rather challenging.
Here’s more photo’s. Pretty hilarious looking at his expression that can only be described as fear and absolute panic!

Anyway, that’s about it.
this hawaiian does not eat spam…portuguese sausage yeah, spam no. except for the occasional spam musubi.
#63 shoko
2012 was only a 6 game home schedule, so they actually had a better per game sales than the ’10 wac championship year which opened with usc.
gobows, kinda contradictory on the spam eating. 😆
Hawaii Rainbow Warrior Football hype video has arrived….
Enjoy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLCBz2BMuYs
69. I think the figures for last season (2012) hasn’t been posted on the USA Today website yet. So, the 2012 ($6,709,661) figure is actually the 2011 season (Mac’s last year). If you look at the 2008 ($8,553,500) figure, its actually the 2007 year which was the year of the Sugar Bowl. Same thing with the 2011 ($7,426,795) figure which is the 2010 season where Warriors won a share of the WAC championship.
Okay, lets check out this video.
Opinion: Yep, I’m hyped now!
So Will Gregory wont be back…Apparently he was expelled from UH for breaking rules. (O_o)
http://quickreads.staradvertiserblogs.com/2013/07/08/will-gregory-says-he-wont-be-back/
I don’t know why he would even consider coming back if he left under those circumstances. But, wish him the best of luck wherever he goes.
Good job, QBs and others… sticking with the program… staying strong!
deja vu? dave reardon article: will gregory will not be back
http://quickreads.staradvertiserblogs.com/2013/07/08/will-gregory-says-he-wont-be-back/
#72. Thanks I’m hyped. Last season seems like so long ago.
Hype is a four letter word.
USC loses another one.
“USC freshman receiver Steven Mitchell will miss the 2013 season because of a knee injury suffered Friday during a voluntary workout, the school announced.”
http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-usc-football-receiver-steven-mitchell-out-for-season-20130607,0,7728696.story
He broke a school rule and was put on probation. He then was found to have broken terms of the probation, thus resulting in the expulsion. He wants to return but that would require: 1) Appealing the expulsion or 2) Proving the original punishment was not just, thus he shouldn’t be punished for violating a probation that should not have been imposed.
smh
The UH coaches are prohibited from discussing him publicly. But there is a scholarship available if he were somehow cleared to return.
Anyway, the UH backs are Iosefa, Saint-Juste, Wilson, Lakalaka, Wily, Anguay, Muraoka.
Backfield looks fine.
UH needs to get players name back on the jerseys- It looks stupid, we are not USC or notre dame they have decades of traditons
I’m in favor of names on the jerseys
Too bad about Will Gregory. He’s young and still has a chance to turn things around.
Looking forward to seeing the two freshmen running backs, Wily and Saint-Juste.
#89 yep, also want to see Lakalaka. That young man runs, low and hard. Should be fun, if the o-line can make things happen. I am anticipating a much more competitive team. Most if not all of the drama of a change in coaching staff is behind now so those who are Warriors know what is expected and they all seem to have moved along. Just looking at the off season conditioning and academic efforts, I see a different mind set.
This is going to be a different season.
Can’t wait to see Lakalaka, Wily, and St. Juste give us a running threat. Willis Wilson, Justin Lopez, and Pareese Joas should be able to contribute too. Is Keelan Ewaliko going to be a WR? While I’m at it, let’s get those names back on the jerseys, so no one can ever say again, “wow, that Imua guy is awesome, he’s all over the place.” Believe! Go Warriors!
ÙSC is beatable.
Want to comment on a couple of things.
Yesterday– No Abu Maafala did not transfer to Cal for his wife. She was at Notre Dame. And yes Abu did kick okole in his two years at Cal. Abu then became the GA at Louisville under Charlie Strong. And his wife worked at The Jewish Hospital. She is a pathologist. Abu is currently the DC for the Hill Toppers. And was invited this year to a NFL Coaches Camp. We are so proud of him. I’m the families Aloha Shoyu contact. Abu is an excellent recruiter. Great husband and fabulous Daddy to Levi, and Tita. At least when he was at Louisville I could take the soul food with me and deliver.
Regarding USC Mitchell was hurt in Spring ball. Total of 7 Trojans out for season including Farmer. 22 Trojans
were injured in Spring ball. Lots of things going down there including the lawsuit that was just given the green light to proceed against the Team Doc and Coaches filed by Armstead.
I see the mega spam is back.
wTH ?!
IGNORE THE TROLL/SPAMMER.
G morning Tsaikos,
Whoever does this spam needs to get a life. Another hot day in the valley of the sun. Go (Rainbow) Warriors !!
How do you ignore the Spammer?
What I worry about is his immortal soul.
He claims to be a Christian – a Catholic if I remember correctly.
Maybe he should see his priest about Thou Shall Not Steal; Thou Shall Not Covet Thy Neighbors Goods; and what is just as important, the Seven Deadly Sins – and more particularly envy, wraith,
I’m thinking of growing and raising a chicken, how deep should I plant it?
The Russians are coming….The Russians are coming…. LOL
Good morning Tsaikos!!!
