Chris Gaines dies

Sad to hear of the passing of Chris Gaines, who was the UH basketball team’s career scoring leader.

Gaines, 41, died in Orlando, where he was living with his wife, Diane, and their three children, according to his step-mother, Clara Gaines.

Gaines was a soft-spoken guy, tremendously nice, and a pure shooter.

UH’s Circle of Honor committee has been meeting. Gaines deserves to be honored, for his athletic performance and how well he represented UH.

The Sheraton Hawaii Bowl marked the end of an era, of sorts, for the Warriors. Of the 26 starting positions — 11 on offense, 12 on defense (counting the nickelback), three specialists (kicker, punter, long-snapper) — 13 were brought in by June Jones’ coaching staff.

Next season, there will be only five holdovers — most notably linebacker Corey Paredes, safety Richard Torres and right wideout Royce Pollard. The number could grow to seven if slotback Miah Ostrowski and safety Kenny Estes win starting jobs.

That means, for the first time, the majority of recruits will be from the Greg McMackin tenure. McMackin has worked on balancing out the classes, and trying to bring in tall and quick receivers and defensive backs. From this point, his tenure should be judged.

    My post rom yesterday’s blog

Athletic department expenses at any public university are paid from ticket sales; advertising sales & in-kind equipment & uniform donations; special event booster club fundraisers such as concerts, fun runs, dinners, & silent auctions; alumni drives; personal solicitations; bequests; earned interest on endowment funds; dedicated fees paid at registration by students; unsolicited donations; tv conracts, logo royalty payments, concession & parking fees; and legislative allocations paid from taxes – not necessarily in that order.

Jim Donovan has a MASSIVE job to raise funds to support all sports. We must accept the fact that it is our job as fans and supporters to do whatever we can to financially support his efforts.

If every third person who buys a season ticket in any sport were to donate just $25 a year to each sport s/he supports in addition to the tickets – approximately 50,000 season tickets in six sports all totaled – that would generate about $4,500,000 a year. Then add in all other other revenues/donations and that would more than cover all of the Department of Athletics’ expenses plus reduce the deficit within five years.

Once the word gets out, other season ticket buyers would join in on the pledge drive PLUS new ticketholders would also start generating even more revenues.

We’re talking a major chunk of change here – even though the cost to most folks here individually would be one cheap lunch at McBurgerBox every couple of weeks.

For those of you who only support football, that’s about 50 cents a week. Can you afford it?

In my case, doing this would cost me about $3.75 a week for six ticketed sports along with an annual donation of $25 to the softball program. I can pick up that money in the form of inappropriately discarded HI-5 containers over a year’s time.

Why not generate a pilot pledge drive right here. Surely, all of us can afford to pay this manini amount.

BTW – Mucho Mahalo to Ala Wai for listing the top 101-highest paid coaches – #293 yesterday. It never occurred to me that McMackin was right in the middle.

    Good morning.

Yes, most of the team will be Mack’s recruits next year. No question Mack knows players and positions–it’ll be interesting how everything comes together next season, even with the departing seniors.

  6. Bulla December 26, 2010 1:46 am

It’s raining again, Warriors lose….. again. Good season, not great, don’t sugar coat it because it is what it is. Sad for the players regarding the Tulsa game; one of the reasons I admired Coach Dick Tomey was that he always praised his players for a win and always took the blame for any losses. If the team lost, it was because the coaches failed to prepare them according to Tomey…

Mahalo to the Seniors for a good season, you did more than anyone had given you credit for, including yours truly, the 10 win season is something no one can take from any of you. The best of luck in all that you do and cherish the memories of this season, few teams have 10 wins under their belt.

Good luck to the remaining Warriors, and good luck to the coaches. IMUA LANAKILA

If I were an NFL owner or GM, this is how I would look at my team for next year. Next to each of the listed psitions I have either the returning starters or strong returness who would probably start in September of 2011. An NFL team would look at the team in phases, with the 1st phase being the highest paid, down to the last phase. Of course this is just a model, which can be changed up by anyone. Each GM or owner has there own model to work with. This would be my model, which simply my personal preference if I owned an NFL team. Of course at camp time, all positions are open. Even returning starters have to earn their positions.

    Phase 1:

    1 – Quarterback – Bryant Moniz

    1 – Left Tackle – Austin Hansen

1 – Pass Rush Defensive End – Paipai Falemalu

    1 – Shutdown Corner – John Hardy-Tuliau

    Phase 2:

    1 – #1 WR – Royce Pollard

    1 – Center – Matagisila Lefiti

    1 – Stout DT – Kaniela Tuipulotu/ Vaughn Meatoga

    1 – #1 LB – Corey Paredes

    Phase 3:

    1 – #2 WR – Open

    1 – Right Tackle – Open

    1 – FS – Open

    1 – #2 Corner – Open

    Phase 4:

    1 – NFL TE / Hawaii #3 WR – Open

    1 – NFL FB / Hawaii RB – Open

    1 – #2 LB – Aaron Brown

    1 – #2 DE – Liko Satele/Alasi Toilolo

    Phase:5

    1 – NFL RB / Hawaii #4 WR – Open

    1 – OG – Open

    1 – #3 LB – George Daily-Lyles

    1 – SS – Richard Torres

    Phase 6:

    1 – #2 RB – Open

    1 – OG – Open

    1 – #2 DT – Haku Correa/Geordon Hanohano

    1 – Nickelback(Corner) – Open

    Phase 7:

    1 – Long Snapper – Luke Ingram

    1 – Kicker – Open

    1 – Punter – Alex Dunnachie

    1 – Kick Returner – Open

Phase 3 and 4 would be our key issues at spring ball.

Remember, above is the NFL model. Positions of course are interchangeable. I wouldn’t leave Troy Polamalu out of the first phase if he played for my team. Our 2010 Warrior team looked something like this:

    Phase 1:

    1 – Quarterback – Bryant Moniz(Jr.)

    1 – #1 WR – Greg Salas(Sr.)

    1 – Stout MLB – Corey Paredes(Jr.)

    1 – Steady FS – Mana Silva(Sr.)

    Phase 2:

    1 – #2 WR – Kealoha Pilares(Sr.)

    1 – #1 RB – Alex Green(Sr.)

    1 – Stout DT – Kaniela Tuipulotu(Sr.)/ Vaughn Meatoga(Jr.)

    1 – DE – Kamalu Umu(Sr.)/Paipai Falemalu(Jr.)

    Phase 3

    1 – LT – Austin Hansen(Jr.)

    1 – RT – Laupepa Letuli(Sr.)

    1 – LB – Aaron Brown(Jr.)

    1 – CB – Jeremy Bryant(Sr.)

There are a few unsung heroes to the 2010 season. Players that had great years, but no one will talk about them because they didn’t make anyone’s All WAC teams.

LS – Luke Ingram (No mistakes that I can recall)

C – Bronson Tiwanak (Great year)

WR – Rodney Bradley (Never recovered from his injury; Defenses still had to respect his speed and production from 2009; Respect opened up opportunities for Salas and Pilares

DT – Vaughn Meatoga (Rock Steady/Great duo with Tuipulotu)

DE – Kamalu Umu (Monster Year)

LB – Aaron Brown (Monster playmaker; We’ll be watching him on Sundays)

CB – Jeremy Bryant (Steady performer out in space)

  12. Pride. December 26, 2010 2:44 am

WR – Rodney Bradley (Never recovered from his injury; Defenses still had to respect his speed and production from 2009; Respect opened up opportunities for Salas and Pilares.

What I mean is that he battled every week even though he knew that he was struggling. Unselfish during the season. Whatever happened after the season is none of my business. I consider it a team and personal issue.

I have these guys as JJ’s…

Scholie: Austin Hansen, Sila Lefiti, Clayton Laurel, Levi Legay, Drew Uperesa, Miah Owstrowski, Vaughn Meatoga, Alasi Toilolo, Waylon Lolotai, Pookela Ahmad (?), Kenny Estes

Walkons: Shane Austin, Joe Avery, Royce Pollard, Liko Satele, Corey Paredes, Richard Torres, Jordan Gomes

Might be more, but that’s what I gathered at the top of my head

  17. BigWave96744 December 26, 2010 4:08 am

Add Walkons Andrew Faaumu and J.E.T.T.

Minus Jordan Gomes and Pookela Ahmad (thought he had 1 more year like his Kapolei HS teammate Alasi)

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere…

There are two posts that spoke volumes to me yesterday.

HawaiiMongoose: December 25th, 2010 at 4:01 pm Al #123, you said it all. The UH

coaches were presented with a LOT of harsh lessons yesterday. I sure hope they learned

    from the experience.

I too want a job where you can screw up BIG TIME more than once, get paid a high wage salary compared to the rest of the working stiffs that usually can get fired for no reason (i.e. laid off)

which brings me back to Pride’s post about being a NFL GM.

    Well put Pride.. Well put.

  24. NorthShoreFan December 26, 2010 5:03 am

    Pride…#11…Guud observation..

After the game Bighilofan, his patnah and me was standing by the makai tunnel and Vaughn came by. We thanked him for a great season and of all the Warriors who were for the most part, understanablly stonefaced, he cracked a smile and threw one shaka.

  25. BigHiloFan2 December 26, 2010 5:09 am

    Garret,

I’ll bet the coacheslooked all depressed after the game. I was too. Kazz said it best.

    Pride said it better.

    Its all about the mental.

The MENTAL separates the good from the best. Same in every other profession. Everything.

I was watching Coach Aranda run into the tunnel before the game, at the end of the warmups before the game. His game face was on. And he followed Rolovich into the tunnel. His game face was on too.

Great Warrior coaches, no doubt. But da bottom line is this. Coach Mack is gonna have to say something, at some point real soon.

What he chooses to say, and how he says what he chooses to say, will tell us alot about where we are going as a team.

    Plain and simple

Coach Mack should attend a SYLVAN LEARNING CENTER tutorial. So that he can guide the other coaches. learn how and wat to say, so dat he gracefully says… yup…. was me….

    because… AGAIN … on national television…..

    the Redskins lost….

  26. NorthShoreFan December 26, 2010 5:11 am

Applications for coaching jobs should be flying in by now…..

One coach posted some interesting thoughts about the coaching situation at UH…based on his comments, how do you get any recruits to come play for the Warriors?….seems like he telling kids until the situation changes, namely coaching, the program should not be expecting to hit the “Big Time”.

Interesting how one game can blow up the so called support for a rebuilding program.

    I want it now because I pay you enough!…..ah yes…money solves everyting…

LizK….you must have your surf board and boat ready to navigate today huh? Be safe…

  29. BigHiloFan2 December 26, 2010 5:20 am

    Coach,

all of us got our quirks. My suggestion for you is to allow the younger coaches, younger meaning younger than Miano, to be able to say straight up to you how they want to play people, develop the lower leval players.

like take Shane Austin. He was so scared, saw those big fast buggaz coming at him, he panicked and threw the duck for the INT. he’ll never forget that lesson, for sure…

same for the coaches… all of the coaches will NEVER forget the hard lessons handed out to them last night. no doubt. PAINFUL…. i no vstr hoe msny yimrd you gotten likeens in your life, to get one like dat on NATIONAL TV, Again, that was hard, very very hard.

So I’m gonna do my part to get the coaches ready for next year. Because I truly believe the players, AND the coaches, did a great great job this year. I mean it sincerely,

    THANK YOU! for Hawaii.

NOW, GO DO SOME MIND CHANGING TUTORIALS so you no make plans for plan da same way next year.!

Go talk to Pride and his friend my cousin. smart buggaz dem two.

  30. NorthShoreFan December 26, 2010 5:21 am

If you was one recruit and you was reading all the stuff on this venue…would you come to UH?

How would you get one kid to come play over here?…if no can, then no be disappointed the best kids go away to play…

Seems to take a long time to get over it….and peeps willing to blow up everything just to let out fraustrations…we get what we plant…someing la dat…

  31. BigHiloFan2 December 26, 2010 5:32 am

    James Donovan

choose your words, and thought expressions, and say something now….

Coach Mack needs help… If you’re going to support him, and I think you should,

you should choose how you say you’re going to support him.

By action…. And Timing Is Everything. Do you wait until after the National game?

Nope, do it now. But you gotta work it out with him, because he’s got to say something too. Because if you’re going to teach Coach how to be a better coach, and I know, you inherited him too, because he was chosen by Miano, the Lee brothers, Lumpkin and McMackin, you inherited him because JJ just upped and quit on us.

still yet, this is the 4th year…. no mo excuses… none…

what was very painful for me was watcfhing those 3 Polys on the concourse, watching the Tulsa qb throw to the makai sidelines in front of the UH bench in the 34d quarter, and listening to one bugga tell one of his friends as da Tulsa receiver caught the ball and was outrunnin da coverage, he said “… look… look…. he going score…” and he was laughin da whole time he was making fun. He was making fun of our team, of Hawaii….

THAT was painful…. Yup, I took dat very personal.

Kama Krab. My faith is in Ke Akua. My support goes to those whom I see who are endeavoring to serve as teachers to our children. When those teachers are performing this service, they are, in effect, making their work an act of worship. Add to that the balanced approach to train not only the body and the mind, but also awaken the hearta to the benefits of team success over self aggrandizement, then we have something really special.

Winning is a result of successful learning. And losing is part of the learning proxess. I see all as good in the grand scheme of things.

What I do NOT want to see are people so fixated on winning that they lose the big picture. This is happening in the NFL and is not a good example for the way to run a college progran. Look where the Redskins might be if they had developed Colt. The Cardinals and the Cowboys played their outstanding young QBs last night to a thrilling conclusion.

The Skins are going through coaches and players through the seive of their organization because they are fixated on the material side of the game- ignoring people who have hearts and souls into their franchise and dumping them like so much baggage.

Let us not accept that model. It is short-sighted and a waste in every way.

When the kids grow up and see what the coaches are teaching them… And believe in something greater than themselves that allows them to become greater than themselves, they will experience the W. And it will be special.

  36. BigHiloFan2 December 26, 2010 5:48 am

    NorthShoreFan

    I hear wat you’re saying…

Let me pt it this way. Caoch can write out a plan of action too. Last year Coach said Aranda is a big time defensive coach. He followed up his words by making Aranda the Defensive Coordinator. And Rolovich the Offensive Coordinator. I watched the game. You watched the game. The Tulsa players looked LEAN. The entire Tulsa team looked lean. My feeling, from the first time I saw them all on the field during warm ups, and watching them come out of the tunnel, my feeling was that they all came to Play football, and tey all came to win.. I saw that expression, written all over their faces.

My cousin says we need a Disciplinarian. He is right. I think Mack is headed that way. Being a Disciplinarian means the Warriors believe Coach is a disciplinarian. Not a friend, but a disciplinarian.

And, we need a Hammer. Not a very very good football player, but a Hmmer. A game changer. A Mind Bender. a Troy Polamalu. a Ben Roethlesberger. Corey Paredes could be next year’s hammer. He’s gotta want to be the Hammer. To be the Hammer the rest of the team has to believe you are the Hammer. You have to take charge of the team, fire the team up, fire them up to play above their individual levels. Coach could be the Hammer, but he’s got to change the way he thinks.

which is why I’m suggestin SYLVAN LEARNIN CENTER…. make fun of me all you like, i tryin fo make suggestions for positive change.

Coaches got some great recuits playin for da home team.. Paipai, Winchester, Geordon, Haku, and get more coming….

like I said, he doing good, i’m tryin for motivate him to get ova da national hump…

    can…. i no he can…..

  44. Pride. December 26, 2010 6:26 am

#30- There has to be a “VISION” for the program. The vision has to come from somewhere up above. I’m not sure where up above is, but somewhere up above.

I would say a committee made up of two former players, four community leaders who are members of Na Koa, and two UH reps from upper campus. Ninth member should be the AD, tenth and eleventh members should be the current and a former head coach.

That should be your football board that is actively adjusting and ensuring adherence to the vision.

I say to put it in the hands of the board because the vision needs to be larger than the AD or the head football coach. It should be worded in a way that will be adaptable for any coach to come in and comply with, yet specific enough to make sure that there is no misunderstanding from within the program. The vision has to be large and difficult to reach, yet manageable if all the stars were to align properly.

The vision is something that we can use when recruiting, so that young people know that no matter who is here as the coach, the vision will not change. The head coach will simply be the current manager of that vision.

Just an opinion on my part. I’m not saying that it is a solution, just an opinion

  45. Pride. December 26, 2010 6:36 am

#7 – By the way, you are all welcome to take the #7 model and apply it to your favorite NFL team. Go at least through the first three phases and you will probably see why your team is performing well or not performing. You can also go through the teams roster and compare salaries, and you will see who the owners and management deem as important. Of course with the NFL, you need to take into account the market for the respective positions. The market for a QB is different than that for a right guard. In my opinion the right guard should get more money. But that isn’t reflected in the real market.

Coach has to believe in himself and publicly say positive things so that it looks like he’s headed in the right direction. He’s gotta control the coaches and the players. He’s doing GREAT in several phases of the control game. Gotta do better in a coupla more, is all.

Hanohano and Correa stayed home. So did Paipai. These are big time named players. And they’re gonna get better, no doubts about it. They are part of McMackin’s, Miano and Lee’s pickings. Not the leftover class, these are first class players. If I looked at the roster I’d be able to name more, but you get the point. And the other Warrior coaches are getting big time players too. They’re getting better in their profession, no doubt about it.

I have hope for the future, I really do. But I also agree with what Pride and D1 just said.

“Who’s f#*$&@ idea was it that their highlight film was so funny?” and…

You see what I mean? Dat big bugga is one smart big bugga….

#44 – Pride – I agree we do indeed need that vision, but I don’t know about the committee part, some times to many cooks spoil da kalua pig, but they do need a 5 or 10 year plan(vision) not just for football but all of the sports programs.

I think the blogger was thinking I was criticizing Mo Moniz. He is just like 90% of all qb in college. Only very few have the God given gift for being pin point accurate. Even Timmy Chang wasn’t pin point accurate. Colt was. He had the accuracy to put the ball in receivers hands when they hardly had separation. I think the world of Moniz. He has become a good role model. He’s a inspirational leader. He will be a success off the field if football is not his calling in the pros.

    North Shore Fan,

been thinking samoa bout how to say dis.

heroism, like truth, has no geographical or ethnical boundaries.

Coach Mack, Miano and the Lees were here for us when we really needed them, when June Jones left us. we all felt high and dry, and the UH hiring committee were feeling like day had to do sumtin.

June did not have the trust of. amd confidence in, our then athletic director Herm Frazier.

Greg McMackin has the trust of our athletic director, Jim Donovan. And, our Governor is doing something positive about UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII ATHLETICS. And, Virginia Hinshaw and Ms. Greenwood also support UH ATHLETICS. We went from “where we gonna go, to we going MWC and BW”

Coach been around. If I wuz an athlete, i just gotta do my part too. do my homework, no make procrastinatah. No talk like I like football, akk like I love football and know I gotta wipe my @$$ cuz dats part of da toilet trainin, gettin down to da nitty gritty.

That is why, if I was a super athlete from Hawaii, I would play for Hawaii. And I would DEMAND that my coaches act like day not just gettin a paycheck and hangin at Big City…

Because the truth is, the State of Hawaii is backing up the University of Hawaii. People who know, like Hanohano and Moniz ohana, for instance, know that McMackin and crew got Hawaii’s best interests at heart, and are willing to give peeps a second chance. This I know for a fact. Still yet, with compassion gotta have the disciplinarian factah, AND da Hammah!

And this is a Big BIG DIFFERENCE from the past. The UHAD get backup. BIG TIME BACKUP!

YUP, I WOULD PLAY FO HAWAII~

  57. Buffoman December 26, 2010 9:26 am

Describing a “hammer” brings to mind just one name, Niko Noga. In all of my years of watching UH football, I’ve not seen anyone play the game like him. Never appeared to take a play off, did not pound his chest after a big hit, played with such ferousity that other team alway made sure they knew where he was. When he almost single handedly took out two (or was it three) QBs in a game (against New Mexico, if I remember correctly), I thought and still think, folks on the other side of the ball must think this guy eats nails.

I don’t believe we’ve had anyone like him since.

The disciplinarian was of course Coach Tomey. His teams rarely if ever beat themselves. All three phases had a philosophy and executed well (I did hate their offensive scheme).

We are still weak at special teams play.

  58. hawaiiansun December 26, 2010 9:51 am

We need a change @ the top in 2012. MAC has to go. Period. That being said, Rolo has made positive progress, ditto with Coach Aranda. I thought Mouse was a positive contribution in Rolo’s development and quite frankly, is ageless in terms of coaching and tutoring. Kudos to Mouse. He keeps ticking like the bunny. Again, both Rolo and Aranda show talent and are moving on a steep learning curve. Credit MAC for giving them a shot….but not enuff credit for an extension–we need more gray-matter at the top and he simply doesnt have it.

As I mentioned in a previous posts, I would like to see Rolo, use our slots to run the perimeter sweeps to keep the defense honest ala Troy and Oregon. We must evolve and keep our O from becoming static and predictable where DEs zero in on our QBs like they were party-time pinyatas.–given time for preparation–good D-minds will envelop us and exploit vulnerabilities in our system–exactly what Tulsa did with a less than quality D.

BSU, a good D-team, simply embarrased us.

Our run n shoot cannot make it against quality defenses without a legit perimeter running game. College football has caught up to our O and has found a way to shut down our passing game by putting pressure on our QB from the edge. Sampson has the speed to get to the outside quickly but he needs to gain more strength and definitely will be a project for SC Tommy Heffernan . Just rambling….I cant figure out why Sampson wasnt redshirted…oh well.

OL Coach Gordie Shaw is solid and is rebuilding our stock w core fundamentals.

We need to keep improving here and Shaw has a capable inventory to work with to mold a future.

Coaches need to re-think our grayshirt program in terms of numbers. IMO, it aint working on the current scale to merit continuation. Do the math without the sugar coating. To be competitve with the upper-half of the MWC in 2012, namely BSU, SDSU, AFA, FSU and Nevada, we need to keep pace with them in recruiting. I dont see it.

Thus far, we are definitely behind BSU and SDSU. We have a few good picks this year, the rest are too iffy….Juda Parker would be great, but we need more speed (like Aaron Brown) all around or athleticism like Hardy as a common denominator. Both prototypes are great examples to build a base. David Graves is another example of a solid multi-purpose athlete.

In short, there are both upsides and downsides to the program, so the glass is half-full.

Hopefully, Donovan will do the right thing and strengthen the knot where it is needed….but, that is another story.

  59. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2010 10:00 am

Unfortunately for McMackin, the salary will always be a sticking point for fans, foes, etc.

And in the emotions of the loss, people are angry, frustrated, etc., and want punishment, change, etc.

For instance, “Ferd” wants to restructure McMackin’s contract. OK, fine, but that only solves Donovan’s problems.

Will a lower-paying contract make McMackin a better coach? If he were paid $600,000 would UH have beaten Tulsa?

If UH wants a coaching change — following a 10-4 season — then whom does it attract with, say, a $500,000 salary? Not a sitting head coach. Not Kenny Niumatalolo, nor Paul Johnson, nor Rich Ellerson.

Say, Nick Rolovich is promoted. He’s a sharp guy, good ties with the islands. But then you lose him as an offensive coordinator. And if he’s a head coach who calls the plays, which is a pretty difficult dual task, well, he already calls the plays. Does that make UH a better team? Or just a more affordable one? And if the latter is the case, then, again, the only one to benefit is Donovan.

The loss was tough for the Warriors.

It’s inexcusable that three upper-classmen were not eligible to play.

Is it worth restructuring the system? I’m not an AD. I have no idea.

But it seems like it’s easier to make home repairs than razing the building.

    Thoughts?

  60. masteruke December 26, 2010 10:06 am

This is my suggestion on what Hawaii needs to do first if they want to get better as a team. Have all the coaches give a self evaluation on their performance this year. And than have all

the coaches evaluated by his peers and by the players including the head coach. As a fan and spectator this would be my evaluation for the UH coaches.

Special teams kicking coach: D- shanked punts and kickoffs going out of bounds

defensive secondary: to many broken assignments

linebackers; C C- though Paredes had a monster year to many times he was the man left out to cover the opposing teams best inside receiver.

d line: B solid all year even the subs

o line: C+ considering this was a new lineup they more than held their own

    receivers: B+ can’t be perfect

    running back: B+

qb: C-: against the better teams

head coach if what was reported is true that the team laughed at the other teams highlights

you get a D. First time against ND now Tulsa

OC: when your QB says they knew our routes and were jumping the lanes, I was confused,

doesn’t that tell you something about your offensive schemes: C-

DC: from the first game to the last game you did not improve at all: D

RB,receivers and DL coaches did a great job and OL coaches too

  61. oh, oh, oh December 26, 2010 10:14 am

    Promote from within –

Miano, Tormey, Shaw, Tuioti starting at $450 w/ incentives

Keep Rolo and Aranda as OC, DC. Bump up salaries of the productive coaches.

    More team, less ego.

Im not calling for another Sherman’s march through lower Manoa, just a surgical strike where it is needed.

BTW, Cory and Salas had great seasons and just incredible examples of our football program.

Words simply dont do justice to their accomplishment. Wish those sheep grants on the upper level could be used to clone to their warrior spirit. They both embody the meaning.

  64. RedZone December 26, 2010 10:17 am

My immediate need to find would be a good run DE. I thought Purcell did a pretty good job but if you can’t stop the run all is lost. Good cover cbs would be next. I hope UH can find a leader on the oline like Samson too.

  65. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2010 10:19 am

I was thinking, if UH runs a read-and-react offense, then the defense, in some situations, is calling UH’s offensive plays. And with enough preparation time — C-USA teams actually had nearly two months to prepare for the Warriors — a defense will be able to pre-read UH routes. In some situations.

  66. LizKauai -iPad December 26, 2010 10:22 am

The system is restructured, no matter what we think, say or do.

Nothing is as it was and nothing will go back to the way it was.

We live in a world, the foundations of whose societies have been changed into something new and different. As has been mentioned, it will take vision.

Who knows whether there will even be an NCAA 10 years from now? Nations will discover that war is bankrupting their societies in every way and something must be done to eliminate this useless sacrifice. Materialism has become a false god and we can already see in football how a deep pocketbook does not a superbowl team make.

The ones who have the best chance of survival in these days are the ones who put the welfare of people before all else. I believe our coaching team does this and this is why they are appreciated by me. Coach Mack is someone I would send my own child to if football were his dream.

    GO WARRIORS!

ST what i think they do is they know UHs passing trees. So they show the qb and have him read what they think they are going to do then run and beat the receiver to the spot. By the time Moniz sees what is happening the ball is in the air. They just seemed to know where the ball was going.

Don’t agree with #62. If there is a major weak link, it’s special teams. We need to have someone there, Like Aranda and Rolo who have maturing knowledge, shaping up that unit. Late to report, out of position, poor coverage all point to a weakness.

Special teams are a key element to a successful football team. this area hurt us.

Heffernan did a great job with the players. Players need to dedicate themselves to his program.

ST, I agree with Ferd. Restrudcture the contract. If the HC is that certain he is on the right track and can lead his coaching staff and players to meet all elements of a successful program, do it. He’ll look like he is a team player (UH) and can still amke his $1Million plus when he achieves all his goals:

I really don’t know what all this fuss is about in firing coach Mack. Doesn’t everyone see the progress from his first year? Sure, he’s learning to be a head coach, but I see progress. It’s not perfect, but very teams are perfect at this stage of the year. Even the loser of the Auburn-Oregon game will be a loser. I bet some people will want the coach of the losing team fired too. Being a head coach is making soooo many decisions apart from x and o. Some decisions that people don’t really think of like, what color uniforms the team will wear. What kind/color of uniforms the coaches wear. Where and what kind of food the team eats before the game. What time will practice be. When will they leave the hotel/school to get to the game. When will time be given on the road for studying. What focus will practice be on, on all phases of “d”, “o”, and special teams. How long each phase of practice, whether warm ups, conditioning, weight lifting, running the ball on O, passing O, defending the run, defending the pass, etc.. Who do we recruit? What types of players we will need. Who plays and for how long.I guess I am giving you just a slight idea of what the responsibilities of the head coach is. Sure he has his staff to do a lot of the work, but he has to oversee just about everything that goes on with the team and still have to answer to the media and fans. Every decision made by the team, has to go through the head coach as he is responsible for the team. Yes, he lets his O and D and special team coordinators do a lot of it but, they still have to get his approval as to what kind of approach to take. I just don’t want to be like Maryland to fire a coach with a winning record and bowl game invite. I see improvement in Coach Mack from the first year in most phases of the football team. This is his first head coaching job and never, ever had this much responsibility as an assistant coach, no matter how long he has been coaching. Even his talking to the media has improved, although it’s not perfect. NSF and others are right about all this talking about firing coach Mack is not helping recruiting so lets be more considerate of what we say on the blog and in public. If he deserved to be fired, then I will probably be right there with the rest of the fans calling for his head. Who really, really expected this 10 win season anyway? Very few of us.

Rolo isnt ready to be top kick–not yet, he needs more grooming, more time to devolp his unique football instincts, coaching resources, recruiting networks and general knowledge for the game and administration. However, Rolo, is definitely, an heir to the throne in-waiting.

  79. oh, oh, oh December 26, 2010 10:47 am

72 – I agree, speshell Teams has been a problem, but is it due to a lack of ST by the entire staff, and HC?

I suggested Tormey as a possible alternative as he has HC experience and is familiar w/ the program and culture. I would consider Miano and Tuioti first, but worry about their lack of experience. Of course, the current HC had very little experience and it shows. And at 66, it’s too late to be learning on the job.

    ok, now I pau

  80. WarriorMojo December 26, 2010 11:11 am

    Random thoughts:

This talk about firing Mack is silly. I’d be on board IF the program hadn’t shown progress these past three years, but it has, clearly. Now I’m NOT saying that Mack is perfect, ALL coaches everywhere can bear improvement and the grass is always greener elsewhere if you CHOOSE to see it that way. As great a coach as Dick Tomey was, he was harshly criticised for never winning the “Big One.”

One area where MACK and staff have scored VERY high marks in my book are with the CHARACTER of the players he has brought in. These kids are solid citizens as far as I can tell and I therefore support them wholeheartedly. We don’t have McDonald’s five star All Americans on this team, but we don’t have teammates brawling in the stands either. Our Warriors play hard, play fair and play with max effort.

The assistant coaches serve at the will of the HC. How can JD dictate who will and will not get a raise or who will or will not be retained? That kind of stuff totally undermines the HC.

Ryan Henry was our punt returner. He suffered a season ending knee injury. Who should have been back there? Isn’t the strategy to “put the ball in the hands of your playmakers?”

More practices would have been good. As I recall it, the first week of no practice occurred because the coaches all went on recruiting trips. This is part of the price we all pay to live in Hawaii. Logistically, our players and our coaches have the toughest jobs in the country. Even neighbor island games involve a stay over. Would it have been better to skip recruiting the mainland altogether?

  81. A-House December 26, 2010 11:25 am

    whitey:

As I recall, GEN George C. Marshall, as Army Chief of Staff during WWII, in his explanation of Leadership and Unity of Command said, “As a staff officer I have the responsibility to make recommendations. Once a decision is made, I have 2 choices; support it 100% or resign.

Guess General of the Armies, Douglas MacArthur, did not believe in this and was ultimately relived of his command during the Korean War by Pres Truman; nor does GEN Pace, Commandant of the Marine Corps.

This principle applies to the civilian and military worlds we live in.

Seems to take a long time to get over it….and peeps willing to blow up everything just to let out fraustrations…we get what we plant…someing la dat…

One of the 3 best posts this morning. Yup, if I were a high school recruit and I hear that the head coach with a 10-4 record should be fired, has only 2 years left on his contract with no extension yet… my football future would be safer elsewhere. You can bet the other schools recruiting Hawaii players are sending the URL of the negative stuff to their HI recruits–if they are not reading it now on their own.

  83. A-House December 26, 2010 11:44 am

This should not be the time to ask for Coach Mack’s head because UH lost the Hawaii Bowl. Yes, it was a very dissappointing loss but this single game does not define a season!

Agree with others who said that there has been improvement in the first 3 years and he should be recongized for this. Coach Mack will be entering his most important year, #4, of his 5 years as most of the players will be his recruits. Let 2011 be the year to determine if UH needs to make a HC change. Publically, the players have stated their support of him as the HC.

Coach Mack should be given a 2 or 3 year extension of his current contract, but with a lower salary, maybe in the $650- $700 K range; any savings from the $1.1 mil should be awarded to his assistant coaches.

One area that needs a lot of attention is SPECIAL TEAMS! Why is it common place that UH punt returners must call for a fair catch nearly 100% of the time?; especially the past 4 games? Have you noticed that UH returner is surrounded by opponents just before the ball is caught? Punts have not been espcially high. Is there not a “blacking scheme” in place to allow a return? Major emphasis should be given from now, through Spring training, and during summer practices. Is this Tormey’s plan/scheme? Do opponents really have better “gunners”/blocking than UH? Would not be surprised in the final polls that UH is dead last in punt return yards.

  85. papajoe2 December 26, 2010 11:51 am

#84 A-House, That’s what I always wondered and not just that the UH games are pau. From earlier in the season, where does UH rank in the nation in punt returns? Counting all the fair catches and sometimes fumbles for negative yards or a turnover doe we have negative yards for the year?

  86. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2010 11:53 am

One thing UH needs is better non-conference scheduling.

Last year, the Warriors had three consecutive road games (although they went home between the second and third games).

This year, it was two in a row.

    Next year, again, back-to-back.

These are non-conference games, so UH did have control.

But missing 20 school days — not just overall days, but a month of school in a three-month semester — is terrible. You can take all of the tutors you want, and have as many study halls, but if, say, you’re taking a language course, that’s a lot of missed time. Say, you have a Monday-Wednesday-Friday sked, player is missing two classes per non-California trip. Way too much.

Paying the HC $600k instead of $1M may not affect his coaching ability but it does free up $400k in the budget for Coordinator pay.

Would that be commensurate with the relative importance of the contributions that came from those two positions this past season to the “improvement” in the program from Year One? Or should some of that trickle down to Position coaches?

    #83,

The “other schools” sending the URL’s to the recruits better have a record where their own fans aren’t calling for their heads. If they don’t well we can go ahead and do the same thing and forward the URL of their fans as well.

You gonna have people calling for the jobs of Coaches every season at even the most promising of programs. Look at Urban Meyer his first year at Florida, Mike Leach, Llyod Carr, Les Miles, Rick Neuhesel, Steve Spurrier, heck even had Pete Carroll!!!!…They even have fully loaded website dedicated to these “causes”

My point is you are going to get this no matter what program you look at…even the BEST programs you will have detractors. I DOUBT it makes any difference in the long run.

I think things like the coaching staffs relationship to the recruit, how the team is performing and their overall competitiveness and strength nationally, and what are their chances of playing immediately are of far greater importance to any player with 2 cents to rub between his ears.

I like that post too, SteveM. It’s obvious that Coach Mac has been on a learning curve, and he’s done better over time.

There were reasons why we looked like we did against Tulsa. The coaches all know what they would do differently next time. So do the players. Let them search their souls and make adjustments as they need to. Being ready to play is job one!

I am proud that the Warriors went 10 and 4. My belief in them dictates that I feel they should have been 11 and 3 after the bowl game.

    Nuff said.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  98. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 26, 2010 12:52 pm

    d1,

i can’t say for sure, but the Tulsa coaches pumped up their team. The way I have heard Graham speak about the Hawaii Bowl, his respect for Hawaii as a great team, and how badly they really really really want to win this, national rankings etc.

He really said all the right things over his interviews that pointed to a “business first trip” and that their sole focus is to win first, have fun second…

You couple that with the fuel we added to their fire at the banquet AND the fact that Tulsa is a pretty darn good football team. They lost to Boise St. last year (Fiest Bowl Champs) by less than a touchdown.

What do you get? You get a real tough ball game if u come prepared to play.

just wanted to add this. I’m not saying that this kind of talk is helpful, but probably not as harmful as many talk about.

what is more harmful is having empty seats in the stands. the recruits we have a real shot at will come to games…those fans, that energy, that “picture” is 10000000000000x more impressionable than any one or 10 things some anonymous person online is typing out.

  101. d1島 December 26, 2010 12:57 pm

….sorry, should be five (but I never setup the list! 😉 ). So make that 10 wins.

  103. d1島 December 26, 2010 1:00 pm

Of course, if you want a real “reality check” try do the same lists with only the OOC games.

  104. cocobean December 26, 2010 1:03 pm

Give credit to the Tulsa coaching staff. Their offense got stuffed in the first half. Two pick sixes, one pick returned to the three and a 7 yard punt for a short FG gave them their 24. For the 3rd quarter they HUDDLED UP(adjustment made), went to play action to make the the LBs, safeties and nickel step forward then drop into coverage.

Aranda and Rolo are really good at game planning but they’re young. They need to grow a little more to make the “in game” adustments to counter what the opponent is doing. This loss was a definite learing moment for both.

Apparently Mack didn’t learn too much from the Boise game. That you can’t expect good results when you give a well coached team, fighting for their place in the rankings, twice as much prep time as you.

Good afternoon,Tsaiko Nation. Read all your posts after another dissapointed lost in a BIG game situation. You have so many problems with distance, athletic budget, fan support, opponents schedule, athletes elgibility and now questions concerning your head coach.

Maybe the bar is set to high for UH to BEAT the big time schools and in reality UH is really a mid tier program that can win against teams such as San Jose, New Mexico, Idaho and La Tech but asking for WINS vs. the Georgia, Florida, Notre Dame and USC is really out of reach as I personally would enjoy being COMPETITIVE then getting blown and embarresed off the field. Recruiting is the key to success and the philosophy that this current athletic

administration does towards it needs to be re-evaluated as your BEST recruits are your former athletes and right now UH does a PATHETIC job in this area. There are so many of

us out there that will be more then HAPPY to point Hawaii in the right direction with their connections and recources BUT we are nothing but an NCAA violation as the other schools use their former players in many capacities to get the PRIZE recruit as I have witness it personally being at alumni functions UCLA, USC and San Diego State. Until this area starts IMPROVING then Hawaii is going to be second fiddle and being dissapointed in the BIG game

    in my own opinion.

LOVE UH as being a former player I find WAYS to help you as I am active in recruiting students for you at College fairs, speaking at public venues to bring Hawaii to many young and older generations who want to visit not only the Islands but invest kala to your causes and athletic department. I wear Hawaii every day and not ONE day go bye that I don’t get interest from athletes, parents, pedestrians and high influential people. You may not know it but you have PARADISE that can sell here to the mainland as I “giv m” to the bruudas and sistas with POSITIVE results. LWC has made THOUSANDS of dollars with many of silent auction items that I got for them from Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers, Disney Incorporated and Universal Studios City Walk.

To me it’s all about the COMPASSION for you GREAT folks and the DESIRE to help you through THICK or THIN. Once a bow ALWAYS a bow as I would LOVE my former athletes to have this dedication but I cannot speak for them but only for myself. I feel IF we can’t change the situation that what can we do to HELP the situation as your fan support needs to keep coming, money to help the athletic department, volunteering your time for UH causes and keep spreading the ALOHA to people of all genders that Hawaii is “AWESOME” !

Don’t ever get down Hawaii Nei this is all a process of getting to that goal that WE all want here to WIN the BIG game ! It will HAPPEN but in order we must be AFFIRMATIVE and do what we can to help any way possible. Simply The Best, Better Then All The Rest !

Keep the Faith, Keep Believing and stay “PRO HAWAII” !

81: How has Coach Mac shown improvement? The only good (at best) teams he’s beaten are Nevada, Fresno State, Navy, and a dismal Wash. State program. If Hawaii wants to settle for this sort of mediocrity then they should just switch to D1-AA in my opinion. Sure, he had 10 wins, but they were against cupcakes.

This is Mack.s second HC job. Not his first and he is doing a terrific job

Recruiting is the only thing we have to keep rolling up and onward befitting a MWC contender.

  112. el guapo December 26, 2010 1:45 pm

The improvement is in winning the games you are supposed to win and a couple that you weren’t supposed to. This year, that comes out to 10 wins.

The improvement is in a much better defense.

There is still a lot of room for improvement, but there was obvious progress this year.

  113. empty December 26, 2010 2:08 pm

ST – Throughout the game, does the defensive coach talk to the offensive coach to tell him what he sees the other defense doing? Alternatively, does the offensive coach tell the defensive coach what he sees while our defense is on the field? With the coaches as with the players, it should be a team effort. We might be able to react quicker if everyone is talking to each other so we can recognize schemes that the other teams are using against us. Such as dropping the linegbackers into coverage after the ball is snapped. It’s just a question since I have no college football experience and am just a spectator.

The people who are calling for changes and firings remind me of my 10 year old nephew. When he comes to games every time the opponents score a touchdown he says ” aww uncle we not going win” no matter where we are in the game. Even if it’s in the first half. But it’s understandable when it comes from a 10 year old. Since when did we become a program where 10 wins isn’t good enough. And I’ve been a season ticket guy since Larry Price. When we win the opponent must be weak. That’s bs. There are more good football players today than at any time in history. Only the top 2.8% of all the eligible football players in America get awarded D-1 scholies. Check the rosters of NFL teams and you will see there are many players from the so called weak teams. Too bad more fans couldn’t just enjoy the season for what it is. It was a great year for many of us and more was accomplished by a hard working group of athletes and coaches than anybody expected.

  117. Derek December 26, 2010 2:55 pm

People need to stay calm and enjoy the holidays. Be thankful, for a lot of things including being healthy. I was disappointed in the bowl loss, but what can you do. Let’s move on.

In retrospect, Hawaii had a great season. In Mack’s 3 years we were 7-7, 6-7, and now 10-4 w/ a co-championship. In 2009, Greg Alexander got hurt and we probably should have had a winning record and go to a bowl game too. We blew a game at UNLV in 2009 and Alexander got hurt the following week at La Tech. To win a championship, you win with a great defense. You defense played well enough this past season and showed improvement over the prior year. We have to replace those that Stephen mentioned, especially in the secondary and both DEs. I think we’ll be okay at the DT positions and at linebacker. But, we have to continue to get better. How we lost to Tulsa was turning the ball over 6 times, plus a shanked punt for 8 yards. We enemy was ourselves. Our offense is good enough, but we can get better by controlling the ball by improving our rushing. The mark of future teams will center on creating a rock solid defense and finding the next holy grail, a QB who will take us to the promised land. I’m trying to be optimistic and I believe the future is bright for our Warriors. Marketing needs to be creative and Under Armour needs to get some new dazzling apparel and uniforms. It is all about selling the product. Look good, feel good, and do good on the field also. Happy New Year to everybody!

Like my good neighbor, I too am opptimistic for 2011 Warrior team! I am still confident that their record will be NO LESS than 11 – 2!

Yes, the team lost a lot of excellent players, but the “cupboard” is loaded with just as good or may be better (later on) when they are Jrs and Srs.

And, the 2011 recruiting is not yet done. A few more quality recruits as the skilled positions, Oline & Dline, and of course let’s not for “al’s” holy grail. This one I gottsah see!!!

  124. Stephen Tsai December 26, 2010 3:45 pm

It’s a soft schedule for next year.

Only two games they should be underdogs are the Washington and Nevada games, and, again, both teams are losing their QBs.

On paper, they could go 13-0. But games aren’t played on paper, and things happen. But if they play to their potential, they should do well.

  125. uh66 December 26, 2010 3:47 pm

Is it mandated that UH is the visiting team for the bowl? Seems that we do better as the “home team.”

You know…as much as this has been a crappy Christmas for me sports wise (my Warriors loses to Tulsa, my Lakers lose to Miami, and my 49ers lose to St. Louis), I’m proud of our Warriors team. Only in Hawaii…I swear…you can go 10-4 and co-WAC champions when everyone in the universe picked us to finish in the middle or towards the bottom, find any/every manini thing to whine about. How crappy our team is, our coach/staff sucks, we cannot recruit, our tutors suck cuz 3 top guys were ineligible, we wore the white unis, Moniz got out the wrong side of the bed, blah blah blah. All I can say after that is….SHEEEESH! Das all.

  127. hawaiiansun December 26, 2010 4:22 pm

someone on this blog mentioned we play BYU @ aloha next year, if so, Colorado, WASH and BYU should be quality out-of-conference challenges. Not to worry about the huskies, they are loaded to bear at QB, not to mention papa-Montana’s son and six blue-chip born n raised islanders who will be itching to bring misery to their visiting cousins.

BYU, returns their frosh QB who should be better after going through his right-of-passage season. The cougars won 5 of their last 6 games and closed with a 52-24 bowl victory over utep. We got stomped in our bowl game.

In 2011, Hawai’i plays four WAC games on the road and three at home.

Based on staters, Hawai’i will lose 8 on Offense.

Now, who looks bad on paper?

Sorry, given the facts, I neither see a soft schedule nor a slam-dunk season–please look at the other teams roster. It makes a difference.

Hawaii enjoyed a great season, 10 wins and 4 losses. Most of us knew we had a good team and what was achieved was beyond our expectations. Give credit where credit is due. Mahalo to Coach Mac, his coaching staff, players and everyone else connected to the program including the media and the fans.

It was fun following the Warriors this season. It looked like they were invincible after the Fresno State game until we got whipped by Boise State. That defeat brought us back to reality.

We agonize in defeat and become ecstatic when we win. It reminds me of the sign back of the cashier in California Hotel when you go back to get more cash. It said, “Remember it’s just entertainment”. That’s what football is all about for us fans. It is just a game and the best entertainment in town.

I am looking forward to another great season next year with the current coaching staff and new recruits augmenting the ones coming back.

  140. rantandrave December 26, 2010 5:42 pm

You guys call yourself Warrior fans when all I read is condemnation for our football players, coaches, staff, and administration and justifying the persecution by saying you just want our Warriors to have national recognition and low and behold a team that will give our moneys worth because the taxpayers are paying for the entertainment and depending on the Warrior team to make your christmas holiday a good one. Sure we all want improvement and wins, but come on, enough is enough. If I was a young impressionable recruit and read all the degrading remarks on this blog, I wouldn’t want to be part of a football team whose state supports you on the condition that you only win. These so called fans posting all the demeaning remarks here are truly fair weather fans! We’re lucky we even have a football team! Maybe that’s why you put all your eggs in one basket and depend on the warriors win loss record for your emotional state! We’re lucky the Hawaii Bowl wasn’t like the loss Boise had to endure after playing Nevada with higher stakes on the line. We only have one team and if you don’t like it, support the one that will only give you an emotional high! Go to the SEC blogs to post your admiration.

I was at the game and yes I was bummed not just because our team lost, but because I knew how bad these young players must feel. With regards to the ineligible players, I was disappointed that they weren’t more responsible for their academics and education. I wasn’t upset because they couldn’t play for the opportunity to win so that I could feel good about my christmas. I fet bad for the coaches who I truly believe prepared the team but came up way short.

So to the coaches, staff, and our players….Thank you for a wonderful season and know we can top this 10-4 season next year. To the staff and coaches, I recognize the vast improvement from last year and to the players, I acknowledge the hard work you put in to your academics and physical training. The loss to Tulsa will give you so much opportunity to improve so I am looking forward to seeing what was learned in 2011. To Moniz…so glad you are coming back and leading the team next year with so many new talents for your targets.

To the new recruits…don’t let one game or the critics deter you. Remember, we’re the WAC champions and had a winning season and will be even better next year. Remember, for every one critic there are one hundred more supporters.

Chris Gaines is a year younger than I. Remember how lanky his was? Something like 6’5″ 170 lbs. I remember the cover of one UH basketball media guide featured him on the cover, with nylon sweats filled to make him look super huge. A few years ago on sports talk radio, I heard that at the time he had really put on weight, with the guy quoted as saying he had probably put on maybe 100 lbs since his playing days…literally. Thought this was ironic given that media guide cover shot many years ago…

Coach Mack and staff I hope you had a good Christmas! I know it wasn’t the way you wanted to go out, but again we know where we started from and I have been impressed how you kept everyone together. I only hope the best for you in the future. Personally, I think it is silly for people to assume what kind of salary you should be making but I commend you for taking a cut when asked to do so voluntarily. Hopefully, you can double your current salary. I don’t see why not with how we have been improving over these last few years.

#116…turfwar…#127..808chef…#141…rantandrave….good to know there are supporters of the Warriors program out there…2011..we be ok..some good keeds waiting in the wings..they’ll be out there to make their own memories , to borrow a saying from a Tsaiko.

One year it was Lelie, another it was Rivers, then it was Salas. Warriors have proven to be able to reload each year. Getting to be a program others are recognizing.

Moniz…5000 yd season?..Green 1000 yd season?..next year who will it be?

One poster opined that the negativity on the site may have minimal inpact on recruits, not exact words but ..What is “minimal impact”? Loosing one or two of the best? Me, I won’t give anything to rivals to use against me.

    Anyhoo, nau pau.

F I U….now that was a great game! Thought Toledo was gonna wrap things up early.

FIU … up and coming program…gotta watch them next year.

  172. NorthShoreFan December 26, 2010 8:18 pm

4 tough road games…2-2?…maybe…proven..those keeds got some game and don’t count them out.

On December 9th, byu finalized their 12 game 2011 schedule by announcing Hawaii as their season ending game on 12/03/11 @ Aloha Stadium… Remember Hawaii could afford a extra ooc game because Boise St is gone.

senior night, uh could be 12-0 and byu will remember how uh spoiled their undefeated 2001 season…50,000 easy

  179. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 26, 2010 9:37 pm

    #128,

Washington and Colorado are big challenges?….

Washington went 6-6 with their stud Jake Locker leading the team.

    Colorado went 5-7

Not exactly the best and brightest in college football and their conferences.

  180. Ralph December 26, 2010 9:43 pm

but we did lose Colorado, and yes they struggled this season and fired their coach. But they had their troubles before we got to Boulder and we all thought Colorado was beatable this season.

So what do you call a team that lost to a team that you view as “not exactly the best and brightest in college football and their conferences.”

  181. Ralph December 26, 2010 9:46 pm

Huskies lost to BYU, Nebraska, Arizona State, Arizona, Stanford and Oregon. Compare that to the teams we lost to, those two games next seasons are not “gimmies”, we are in for a dog fight.

  182. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 26, 2010 10:06 pm

I may be at the Cattle Call, but don’t count me so as to not throw off the count. No matter – even if I do show up since I won’t be eating anything anyhow. Just going to show up to see a few “old” faces and to confirm some interesting yet disturbing things.

When did “the public” via the media find out that we’d lost three players?

  183. al December 26, 2010 10:30 pm

i’ll out it this way…we should win no less that 12 games in 2011.

i thought we’d win 9 this year and we exceeded my expectations. however, i thought we’d get the ninth in the hawaii bowl.

it’s just not the same losing the last game of the season four years in a row.

  187. al December 26, 2010 10:42 pm

I’m as disappointed as everyone else with the Bowl loss, but will not let it tarnish a very good season. I’m sick and tired of idiots who continue to mouth that “Fire Mack” mantra; I thought that would end with this season, but unfortunately games like the Boise State and Tulsa debacles will perpetuate it, unfortunately. A bright coach said “one snap and clear”…I’m happy with the guys returning and excited about some very good recruits who will help to consolidate and improve the team. Go Warriors!

I just started reading the blog again and I’m up to 60, and had to jump ahead.

I watched the replay of the game last night. My single thought is, at this time, we should do home repairs and not raze the building.

and I was watching Coach and Miano walking the sidelines. Lord knows they wanted to win badly, and coach is no quitter.

anyway, back in a few afta I catch up till now.

    Great morning, Everyone!!!

    Condolences to the Gaines ‘ohana!

    #141… RantandRave… I agree.

#153… Pomai… I’m far from an armchair coach… just a fan that loves UH to the core. As I’ve said a few times earlier this season, I still believe we’ll go undefeated, but with no BCS Bowl game. I believe in our coaches’ abilities to put the right people in the right positions, and teach all da boyz what they need to succeed. I guess it all depends on how quickly we fill all da big pukas; how well all da new boyz fit in so dat everyone gels and improves from day one.

Stay warm, dry, and safe, everybody!!!

    Go, Warriors!!!

  213. Michigan Warrior December 27, 2010 7:16 am

And, to add to my #213 above, I thought we had a chance to go undefeated too, with USC and Boise as my biggest worries. I was kind of close, with that additional and unexpected loss @ Colorado. Oh well. It was a fun year!

    Mahalo, Warriors!

  214. BigHiloFan2 December 27, 2010 7:31 am

cuz we going remind da coaches fo no get amnesia.

    we going Hawaii bowl early…

    an den….. 😯

it all boils down to amnesia prevention technique.

i heard it on bleacher report. 😛

amnesia is correctable.. you keep slapping da head planny times, an no more than a 3 day gap between slapping sessions. Pavlov’s BHF2 principle

If I was a UH football coach, I would be sulking when I was alone in da closet.

and den, I would remember da words of da Hilo fan.

“yes you can. no cry… suck it up… go fight fo Hawaii…

    go do mind exercise.”

and remember this, coaches. You need help. no no, not from the players…

from the players and teachers. you got a year to figure out what classes giving the players a hard time.. you got a year to plan what for do on da away game trips. a year.

just like da game. Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

I know some of you coaches. I know this about alla you. You got Pride. So, go fight for Hawaii! Fight for your Pride. Fight for your team.

    Go Warriors….

  229. […] Types of Nuclear Thermal Rockets A nuclear thermal rocket can be categorized by the construction of its reactor, which can range from a relatively simple solid reactor up to a much more complicated but more efficient reactor with a gas core. Solid core The most traditional type uses a conventional (albeit light-weight) nuclear reactor running at high temperatures to heat the working fluid that is moving through the reactor core. This is known as the solid-core design, and is the simplest design to construct. A NERVA solid-core design The solid-core has the downside that it can only be run at temperatures below the melting point of the materials used in the reactor core. Since the efficiency of a rocket engine is strongly related to the temperature of the working fluid, the solid-core design needs to be constructed of materials that remain strong at as high a temperature as possible. Even the most advanced materials melt at temperatures below that which the fuel can actually create, meaning that much of the potential energy of the reactions is lost. Usually, with hydrogen propellant the solid-core design is expected to deliver specific impulses (Isp) on the order of 800 to 900 seconds, about twice that of liquid hydrogen-oxygen designs such as the Space Shuttle main engine. Other propellants are sometimes proposed such as water or LOX; although they would provide reduced exhaust velocity, their greater availability can reduce payload costs by a very large factor where the mission delta-v is not too high, for example within cislunar space or between Earth orbit and Martian orbit. Immediately after World War II, the weight of a complete nuclear reactor was so great that it was feared that solid-core engines would be hard-pressed[citation needed] to achieve a thrust-to-weight ratio of 1:1, which would be needed to overcome the gravity of the Earth on launch. The problem was quickly overcome, however, and U.S. nuclear thermal rocket designs quickly reached thrust-to-weight ratios of approximately 7:1. Even the ground-tested Soviet RD-0410 had a vacuum ratio of 1.8. Still, the lower thrust-to-weight ratio of nuclear thermal rockets versus chemical rockets means that solid-core engines are best for use in upper stages where vehicle velocity is already near orbital, in space On the same subject: http://warriorbeat.honadvblogs.com/2010/12/26/the-next-generation/ […]

Graphic novels may be the expression at current employed to refer to reprints of comic strips, such as within the scenario using the good-looking two-volume compilation using the total run of Calvin and Hobbes. For that reason, just like a comic e book can most successful be acknowledged by its similarity having a magazine, with staples within the spine and fairly few of pages, graphic novel now refers having a square-bound comic of any dimension, with distinctive content material stuff or not. Graphic novels, selected current comics and titles on comic artists, writers, gathering, and so forth., are on the minute growing to be additional within the collections. This handbook represents the current issue of comics connected material.

Well, not to repeat the hating on aol, but th is is in all probability the most d isappointing l ist up to now. On both sides. How can El Banco Deuno and aol be around the greatest l ist, and then bash art directors club? I really did nothave a problem with that redesign, as well as collateral was looking pretty excellent. You realize what really should have already been on the l ist for worst logos? New York Philharmonic logo. My hatred of that logo burns in my chest to th is day. The title in the designer behind that logo would be the only motive for any of its accomplishment. The most beneficial l ist the 12 months is quite mediocre for me.I like Mary Shu is remark about her possibilities for the ideal l ist a bit much better.

I would probably be much happier ignoring the fact that our President has just about started world war three with his ignorance. I don’t know what’s better. Getting invaded and not knowing about it until me and my family is shot and killed in front of my eyes, or having the opportunity to head for the hills and hide because I knew they were coming.

Gotta be Spierman, that classic teen angst, the awesome storylines since the 1960’s, plus Venom, and now the movie franchise. People can say what they want about Superman and Batman (…..), but in my opinion, nothing gets close to the web Slinger :)!

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  498. Chanel Sunglasses January 20, 2011 5:44 pm

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  516. coach wallets January 21, 2011 4:20 pm

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
