The jersey situation

The Warriors will have a new look this coming football season.

Under Armour has created new jerseys, which are expected to be unveiled in a news conference in August.

Word on the boulevard is that both home and road jerseys will feature designs on the left side that will resemble a tattoo sleeve. The Maryland-based company created the design after consulting with experts in Polynesian culture.

Under Armour also has created a new line of cleats. Several players who have seen the brochures gave high approval reviews.

    Boo!! I see you!

  2. Michigan Warrior June 6, 2011 3:58 am

I like the Poly representation. And… as long as our boyz got traction to do what they gotta do on da field. Just hope it’s not day-glo green!

  3. Michigan Warrior June 6, 2011 4:02 am

Anyways, howzit, everyone! Been up all night, fighting with this nasty sinus again. Better be done with it before my trip back home in a week and a half!

Maybe I’ll change my name to “Honokai Warrior” or “Wes’side Warrior”. That way, no matter where I move to, my name will reflect where I’m originally from. Votes?

  4. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 4:16 am

    MW:

Get better. It’s a miserable thing to travel while suffering from a sinus infection.

  5. Hawaiianbod June 6, 2011 4:24 am

    g’morning ST and MW!

ST – how many hours left for Project Graduation? Is Devon getting a new car?

  6. Hawaiianbod June 6, 2011 4:26 am

MW – any name with Warrior in it sounds good to me, IMHO.

    hope u fell better soon!

    Hawaiianbod:

Son has more money than his pop. He bought his own car more than a year ago. Sometimes he even lets me drive it.

  8. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 4:32 am

That was a nice surprise for Dustin Adams to contribute to yesterday’s comments section. Seems like a nice guy.

  9. Michigan Warrior June 6, 2011 4:37 am

    Thanks, ST!

HawaiianBod… but, a name like “Peachy Warrior” (suggested by Wafan) sounds more feminine than anything else. Gotta be careful not to step on Koa-mahu’s shoes! Dennis suggested “Warrior Dawg”. Sounds cool, but I don’t want to be confused with either those UGA dogs, or the ones up in Fresno.

    Anywayz…

Happy birthday, birthday peoplez! (And a great big Happy Birthday to my oldest daughter, Kanani!)

    Congratulations to all da grads!

  10. Michigan Warrior June 6, 2011 4:41 am

Since UH Athletics are basically the only game in town, Dustin will learn real quick of our aloha spirit, and how much we love and support these guys, no matter where they are from. If they choose to represent our school and our state, we’re there for them!

  11. Hawaiianbod June 6, 2011 4:46 am

ST – re Devon, lol. good for him! May he have a $ucce$$ful future!

Yes, it was a very nice surprise for us readers. Dustin Adams sounds like a very down-to-earth, humble young man. He also seems very excited to become a Warrior. Hopefully, the ‘poachers’ keep their distance. NLI is a looong time from now.

  12. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 4:48 am

    Hawaiianbod

UH should be safe. Not many schools are crazy enough to trek to central North Dakota.

  13. Hawaiianbod June 6, 2011 4:52 am

MW – u are right about that ‘Peachy Warrior’ name. heheh. Good luck on your relocation! Too bad, u couldn’t come back to the aina. Maybe the next move?

Happy Birthday to all the birthday peeps, especially ur daughter, Kanani!

  15. CoolEthan June 6, 2011 5:25 am

    Another change in uniform visuals?

Though I’m a stick in the muck with simplicity, guess this is the new movement sports. Has anyone seen what Ariz. st. changed to? I think they opened up an art challenge to the new coming freshman, offering a free month of food on their meal ticket, if chosen the winner.

  16. CoolEthan June 6, 2011 5:26 am

    On this D-Day, June 6th.

Our true heroes that shall not be forgotten.

  17. Wes'side Warrior June 6, 2011 5:33 am

Since my time growing up was divided between great-grandparents in Makaha, grandparents in Waipahu, our hale in Honokai, and school in Ewa Beach, I’ll change my name to “Wes’side Warrior”.

All those times out from Makua Cave to Kaena Point, fishing and camping with my Dad and older cousins, I think it’s a fitting name to remind me of where I came from, and where my heart will always belong.

So, there you have it… unless this name had been used here, previously.

  18. Lava June 6, 2011 5:41 am

  24. Annoddah Dave June 6, 2011 6:12 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Glad to hear of the new uniform design. I thought the last season they looked like bowling shirt design. Not very unique with the shaded shoulder pad area, etc. Hopefully, it will make our team look distinctive. Say, how about adding a rainbow on the helmet!!?? Hah!

  25. whitey June 6, 2011 6:24 am

Good morning Tsaikos and the new wes’side warrior.

  26. jm2375 June 6, 2011 6:31 am

    Happy Monday, fwiw. 😆

Good luck to Kolten Wong, Lenny Linsky and the other UH pro baseball hopefuls!

Wessai Warrior would be a cool nick to have.

R.I.P. Big John Kauinana, former AD and football coach at Mlilani High.

  29. gigi-hawaii June 6, 2011 6:34 am

Looking forward to seeing the new unis. As a woman, I am always interested in clothes design.

  30. papajoe2 June 6, 2011 6:35 am

    wes’side warrior is cool.

  31. Derek June 6, 2011 6:37 am

Look good, feel good, play good. But I hope the uniforms have the tapa design to accent the polynesian look, maybe down the side of the jersey and pants. Remember the Nike pants under JJ, they had the tapa design around one of the pants about the thigh area? That was kinda cool, especially the black pants. But, getting new unis is the way to go. It’s really a merchandising thing and everything is $$$$. And it does help recruiting believe it or not, especially if it’s a really good design. There are a lot more football teams going with Under Armour such as Maryland of course. South Carolina, Auburn, and Utah are some others that I know of. Hopefully, the uniforms will not look “soft”, but will accentuate the look of Warriors, which is strong and the fighting spirit.

But, I have to believe that Coach Mack and the coaching staff have given their input and the seal of approval.

  32. whitey June 6, 2011 6:56 am

was an exciting past sat as duffer’s kid tied for the 2nd spot for the US Public Links qualifying, but unfortunately lost on the 2nd hole of the playoff. This is the same tournament that launched Michelle’s fame. The kid get potential. Watching him swing made my back sore.

  33. LizKauai -iPad June 6, 2011 6:58 am

    Ps

Hope the UA cleats support the feet as well as look good..

    Hiho!

  34. Dennis Halloran June 6, 2011 7:03 am

    I also like Wessai Warrior

Hope the Uniforms are still basically black with green features

    Wes’side Warrior it is!

  37. gigi-hawaii June 6, 2011 7:27 am

    Woo-hoo!!!

Your birthday dinner sounded like a winnah to me, too!

  38. BG June 6, 2011 7:27 am

    whitey

Just love it when the neighbor island kids show up on the radar! Kudos to Duffer and his boy!

  39. chopsueyboy June 6, 2011 7:35 am

UH should auction all the old uniforms as a fundraiser

  40. BG June 6, 2011 7:44 am

Thanx gg and all the bloggers yesterday. I never walked at my UH graduation as I was on my way to Ft Benning so this was a chance to experience the emotional atmosphere among the graduates, albeit 40+ years later! I’m in awe of the many (especially master program candidates) who had to juggle school, jobs, and families in their journey to their degree [applause].

  41. BG June 6, 2011 8:02 am

I also got word that my old futs softball team won its 4th game in a row yesterday. I had to leave in the 6th inning (9 inning game) to make it to the graduation. The old timers were telling me that they couldn’t remember the last time the team won two in a row! Yeah, we’re not very good but we have a good time! You know it’s a great day when the team pulls off a triple play (sounded like it) to mercy rule the opponents in the 7th inning…means getting to the lunch table sooner and sitting down to pop open a cold brew!

  42. Derek June 6, 2011 8:02 am

The UH men’s basketball team used Adidas uniforms and sneakers. Are they changing to Under Armour this year? I believe the softball team, men’s volleyball, baseball, and women’s basketball use Under Armour. Dave Shoji’s team use Asics. Does he have a contract with Asics? It is just odd that some programs have different sponsors. Most athletic departments just have a contract with one company to provide team uniforms such as Nike, Adidas, UA, Russell, Reebok. The NFL contracts with Reebok. The NBA w/ Adidas.

  43. Bryson June 6, 2011 8:05 am

It would be cool if UA made a Long Sleeve performance shirt with poly designs all the way down to look like a full tattoo’d sleeve…Seems like Mack n Co. Are paying attention to the effect Uni’s could have on recruiting…I wonder if UA and UH will extend the current deal they have in place?

  44. Slugger June 6, 2011 8:24 am

    Good morning, gang!

    Happy birthday to JUJU!

    Happy birthday, Ruth and Shane!

Project Grad is a great idea to keep the kids safe while celebrating. Now ST can go home and take a nap.

  48. Slugger June 6, 2011 8:50 am

Good luck to Kolten and Lenny today. Hope Trap doesn’t lose too many of his recruits to the bigs.

condolences to the Kauinana ohana on the passing of big John.

    #43,

Start winning nationally televised ESPN games and UA will certainly entertain extending the contract.

    Makes sense right?

  51. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 6, 2011 9:19 am

Mountain West Conference unveiled its new logo a few minutes ago.

go to http://www.themwc.com to check it out.

I don’t know if I am sold on it, but I can see what they were trying to accomplish.

  52. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 6, 2011 9:20 am

One thing I wish they did was bring back a secondary helmet.

  53. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 6, 2011 9:22 am

Arizona State uniforms by Nike…So fricken sick. Nike’s design team are top notch.

“The old logo with the picture of the mountain and words were confusing…”

    Howzit folks!

Hope everyone is having a wonderful Monday morning.

I have to relay this info about the new MWC logo. Props to Chris Murray from the Reno paper who is the Wolf Pack beat writer. Talk about the lack of innovation on the logo. Sheesh!

  62. al June 6, 2011 9:59 am

the legend of john kauinana is that when he was either a freshman on jv or a sophmore for the kaimuki bulldogs. he pounced upon a fumble…the ball burst at the seams.

rest in peace to a great guy who made things a whole lot better to many a young man.

  63. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 10:00 am

Sorry to hear of the passing of coach Kauinana.

    Just a great man.

It’s kind of amazing that when I was in high school, Mililani was considered a new school. Now, so much.

  64. Derek June 6, 2011 10:02 am

Personally, I like the idea of Gib Arnold’s squad getting at least one Aloha Print shorts, of course with some tapa design on it. It’s gotta be long enough at least to the top of the knee, not the short ones that Nash, Holiday, etc. used to wear. Please, not those hedious short tight ones. Perfect to bring them out at the Diamond Head Classic where Gottfried wears his aloha shirt. Kanoa Leahey did a great job at play by play on ESPN2. Maybe he’s the heir apparent to his pop. Not a bad choice by OC16 in HD. Again, it’s marketing, merchanssing, and recruiting. Heck, the aloha shorts can be used to go surfing too by the basketball players!!!! hehe.

I have to say, Nike has first rate stuff and make very good designs and makes the latest fabric that dries fast and is light. They are always first in innovation. The other makers also make some good stuff too. Nike is a conglomorate. They own Converse, Cole Hahn, and Eddie Bauer too. I wouldn’t be surprised if they buy out either Quicksilver (who also owns Hurley), or O’Neill.

  65. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 10:09 am

Several years ago, when the university was seeking to change its logo, a columnist wrote that her uncle had owned a UH T-shirt for decades, and it was good enough for him. Her point was about tradition and history, etc.

Of course, that column inadvertently proved the opposite, that there is a need for change. After all of those years, her uncle only bought one UH logo item.

Change in athletic apparel is good for many reasons, the most important is that encourages consumers to buy more products.

  66. Derek June 6, 2011 10:13 am

Sorry, my error. Hurley is already owned by Nike since 2002. One of Hurley’s best board short is the Phantom. Retail expensive: $62.00 at Macy’s. You have to look for sales and find bargains, like at Ross’s, Marshalls, or PacSun or other discount stores.

  67. Da Punchbowl Kid June 6, 2011 10:13 am

The new MWC logo looks great- as a logo for a prison system or some such.

It doesn’t project mountains, sports or excitement very well in my opinion.

They need a do over with design students from each of the MWC schools submitting potential logos. The new logo just doesn’t look conducive to branding/promotion.

  68. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 10:14 am

One of the problems UH has is that it has so many different deals. Football has Under Armour. Men’s basketball has adidas. Volleyball has Asics.

  69. greenthumb June 6, 2011 10:15 am

#51iwwthm — OMG, the new Mountain West logo looks like the Dr. Who logo and its takeoff on the Tardis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who

    Thanks for the link, Shoko.

  71. sports for fun June 6, 2011 10:17 am

Good grief! That new MWC logo is terrible! Even the WAC logo is better than that! They say that the new logo represents boldness, feistiness, and competitiveness. I just don’t see it…

As far as football uniforms go, I gotta get use to the pitchfork on the ASU helmet. I, for one, don’t really like it. The uniforms seem pretty much the same to me. TCU’s uniforms are plain, and the helmet decal looks the same as always. The new Washington State football helmet and uniforms look to be the best to me out of all three. Here’s hoping Hawai’i’s uniforms are better than what I’ve seen so far concerning new uniforms.

  72. Da Punchbowl Kid June 6, 2011 10:18 am

    lol @ 69. True dat! 😆

  73. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 10:18 am

  75. NEO June 6, 2011 10:21 am

wow, after a LOOONG hiatus, in fact I stopped writing in the blogs on SA because I didn’t agree w/ the take of the SB and HA… I’m back!!!! Good to hear that UH will be getting a new jersey… hopefully it doesn’t look as “futuristic” as the last one has… I really liked the old black jersey with the bicep Kapa design… I hope UA brings something like that back… Hope the Tsai-kos are doing well!

    Welcome, NEO.

  82. Kazz June 6, 2011 10:44 am

We are halfway through our 8-year deal with Under Armour. Nike is tops, but in four years with Under Armour, the UH student-athletes have never been well-supplied with apparel and equipment than with Under Armour.

Nike gave us their “bare bones” deal for football and even despite a landmark year in football in 2007, they still couldn’t offer what Under Armour was willing to offer.

    There’s no sugar-coating that.

Not sure how far along the Under Armour deal for softball and baseball are though. Softball was first fully supplied by Under Armour in 2009 complete with uniforms, apparel, and under garments and work out gear. UH baseball soon thereafter followed and it was a slow gradual thing as only this past season they received actual Under Armour uniforms, prior years they only had cleats and under garments.

Just the past two years, Rainbow Wahine Basketball also slowly started receiving Under Armour pre-game apparel and this past season they debuted Under Armour shorts and the new line of Under Armour basketball shoes.

It is what it is and the fact is no other outfitter has treated UH this well in recent memory. In the end, the student-athletes benefit and they have benefitted very well.

  83. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 10:48 am

More than a new logo, I think the Mountain West needs a new name. Or, at least, a new nickname.

    How about: Mo West?

  84. Kekoa June 6, 2011 11:00 am

Back-in-da-day, newly designed short-shorts were issued to our HS basketball team every year. No choice, no say in it…just put ’em on and get out on the court.

I remember when HowLee and I were issued ‘new’ uni’s that were a bit baggy. We all howled with laughter over the fact that they looked like *Olo-Olo* pants! Back then, nothing was more insulting then to be caught in anything that was as hideous as that. We insisted that it made us look like we were wearing something stolen from the Harlem Globetrotters!

Fast forward to the future, and what a difference a generation makes. Even baseball uni’s are baggy pants down below the ankles. No stirrup socks or ‘leggings’ no pinstripes, and no tailor made look about them.

Enter the Football Uni’s aka Under Armour. Sleek, skin tight, artsy fartsy trendsetting colors and graphics…Go Figure!

  85. Kekoa June 6, 2011 11:07 am

Gigi ~ It’s in your ‘gh’ mailbox…am I behind the times? Can you send the new one via my kekoa22 addy?

  87. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 11:11 am

So what exactly does it mean to vacate a title?

First of all, how many of us actually own a record book?

Now, if USC had to give back the BCS money …

    Hmm, calling Irving Picard …

  88. LizKauai June 6, 2011 11:11 am

Congrats, Devon… be kind to your dad, please 😆

    NEO- welcome back!

    Hi de Ho!

  89. LizKauai June 6, 2011 11:13 am

  90. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 11:18 am

Notice, I tried to get “jersey” and “situation” in the same headline?

  91. kruzen June 6, 2011 11:34 am

A lot of people negatively criticized the new Big Ten logo too.

I wonder if the Big West is going to change their logo.

  94. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 12:14 pm

I wonder how many items the MW can sell with its Rubik’s Cube logo? Maybe if it were in 3-D.

  95. d1shima June 6, 2011 12:17 pm

Kekoa beat me to it…thought the title needed to be Shored up.

  96. al June 6, 2011 12:18 pm

perhaps the logo should have reflected the mountains to the sea.

  97. Derek June 6, 2011 12:18 pm

It’s a little strange seeing the new MWC logo with purple and gray. Isn’t that the colors of TCU and TCU is leaving the conference to join the Big East! Doesn’t make sense to me. In fact, no other remaining MWC schools has the color purple. Don’t get me wrong. I think purple and gray is a pretty good combination.

  98. Wes'side Warrior June 6, 2011 12:18 pm

#60… Kekoa… kinda sad to give up “Michigan Warrior”, but it’s time to move on. It’s served me well. “Wes’side Warrior” is more appropriate and reflective of my roots.

“This initiative is emblematic of the evolution of our league,” Thompson stated. “The overwhelming majority of the people we spoke to said the Mountain West is bold, feisty and highly competitive, and we strongly believe these qualities are reflected in our new brand identity and our new logo.”

Did he steal the design from the “highly competitive” Rubik’s Cube?

I just think the Mountain West is too clunky.

Maybe it needs to go basic, and just call itself: The Conference.

  104. Curt June 6, 2011 12:21 pm

Or al might be in the kitchen getting ready fo lunch. Eatin’ or sleepin’ is what I say. 🙂

  107. Wes'side Warrior June 6, 2011 12:28 pm

ST… I seem to recall you posting a certain rule during a contentious period of the Wahine Softball Season (on this blog). hahaha! I’m fine. Just a little nostalgic in that “Michigan Warrior” was my face-to-face with several Tsaikos both here in Michigan and back home on my last trip. I’m looking forward to moving onward and upward.

“Wes’side Warrior” has a nice, solid ring to it. Thanks, though.

  109. Stephen Tsai June 6, 2011 12:36 pm

Has UH actually officially sent its farewell notice to the WAC?

If not, that’s an awful lot of stories about joining a league a year from now.

  110. madeinhawaii June 6, 2011 12:43 pm

I keep waiting for the Mountain West logo to rotate so I can see what’s on the other two sides. Does it say CONFE RENCE? Or maybe they hid the mountains back there.

    Dustin Adams:

Have you ever been approached by little children who admirling ask for a picture with you and your autograph? There will be many admiring teenagers and some older women who will tell you to call me Aunty. And, there are some, whether you like it or not, will always refer to themselves as your “aunty”.

Have you ever met strangers who refer to you by name, smile, say hello, and thank you for chossing to pay for their team representing an entire State?

These are but 2 examples of what happens to student athletes who commit and play for Hawaii. It may not apply to all sports, but football is at the top of the list.

As others have mentioned “family or Ohana” and UH fans, especially football ones, are near fanatic in their support of “their team” and the players. But, unlike some mainland schools, the people, most anyway, care more about the student athlete; they give from the heart.

All will ask you to study hard and earn your degree before asking you to be an All American player.

Emerse yourself into the “culture” and you reap rewards never dreamed of. Perhaps a phone call to Colt Brennen or Davone Bess will be more meaningful as they know what we speak of.

Best wishess for a great Senior year at Minot and we will look for you in Hawaii come August 2012.

  119. Curt June 6, 2011 12:49 pm

I hope the MWC can pull off the long shot and attain BCS status. Then of course, hang on to it.

  120. rage777 June 6, 2011 12:52 pm

If UH hasn’t sent the notice, they better hurry up. I believe the deadline is June 30th, if they want to leave for the 2012 year.

  121. A-House June 6, 2011 12:52 pm

sorry for para 2 -choosing not chossing and play not pay.

  122. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 6, 2011 12:55 pm

The logo is sorta kinda little bit maybe growing on me. Like I said I know what they were trying to get at.

The mountain and the west are equally as important etc. and something minimalist.

It sure as hell beats the Big 10 logo though.

Does anyone know if the new logo will have to be purple on our field or do we get to choose the color? I do like purple.

  123. RedZone June 6, 2011 12:56 pm

So is this like logo change time or what? Should just call themselves the number of schools in the conference. If there are 8 schools then the logo would be an 8 ball.

  124. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 6, 2011 12:59 pm

    #120 Curt,

I think the 2 year temp. AQ status is possible based upon the exemption that the Big East gets.

If they don’t get that status for 2 years, I would expect the MWC along with all the individual member schools to file a class action suit against the BCS.

Its AFTER that 2 years is where we shall see how the MWC pans out. The BCS could create new rules to get AQ status. Something like if your logo doesn’t have the word “conference” or a “number” in it, you don’t get to qualify for AQ status.

  125. RedZone June 6, 2011 1:00 pm

MWC should call themselves the Big WAC Conference.

  126. kawika49 June 6, 2011 1:08 pm

    OWC original wac conference.

  127. kawika49 June 6, 2011 1:09 pm

    or..Mega Wac Conference.

  128. Curt June 6, 2011 1:09 pm

Secondly, I’d like to see the conference rework its TV contract. Boy, is it a bad one.

In addition, I’d like to see BYU and TCU rejoin the conference. Yes I must be hallucinating and dreaming the impossible. I should wake up right away and accept reality before I hurt myself. But then again one dream did come true, Hawaii going to the MWC.

    Remember this song:

When you wish upon a star

Makes no difference who you are

    Anything your heart desires

    Will come to you

If your heart is in your dreams

    No request is to extreme

When you wish upon a star

    As dreamers do

    Fate is kind

She brings to those who love

As sweet fullfillment of their secret drowns

Like a boat out of the blue

Fate steps in and see’s you through

When you wish upon a star

    Your dreams come true

    Iwonderwhytheyhateme,

#125 Yes you’re right. I wouldn’t put it past the BCS to throw up new obstacles.

  133. Curt June 6, 2011 1:20 pm

  134. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 6, 2011 1:25 pm

    #131,

Yes, I think almost all current MWC fill there stands way beyond what is necessary to meet NCAA Div 1 requirements. UNM might be barely there.

UNR might be barely making the cut.

  135. Okole Maluna June 6, 2011 1:31 pm

Pittsburg as expected took UCLA RHP Gerrit Cole as #1 pick about 12 minutes ago.

Kolten Wong is listed as #25 pick or #1 at 2B to be taken off the board #25 is San Diego

Padres that will be a great since it’s west coast team.

  159. Okole Maluna June 6, 2011 3:34 pm

Ranked at #25. Kolten Wong 2B Hawaii 5-9 190 Rank #1 2B There aren’t that many pure college bats in this year’s Draft class, but Wong has one of them. He gets overlooked because of his size, his position and the fact he plays in Hawaii. But, drawing comparisons to Carlos Baerga, Wong can really hit. (He packs the Hawaiian Punch)

He’s got a professional approach at the plate, with a little power, and is the kind of hitter who should not take a long time to get to the big leagues. He’s an above-average runner, and while he may not be a Gold Glover, he’s a solid defender at second base. There tends to be a knock against guys who enter the Draft already at second, but Wong is a much better all-around player than perhaps he gets credit for. Pick at #22 by St Louis Cardinals.

I’m sure Coach Wallace is happy (Cardinals Season ticket holder) to see another Hawaiian Boy on team roster.

The Colorado Rockies was also interested in Kolten and that would’ve been very interesting to see Kolten fly balls to Home-run. But they picked a Oregon LHP Tyler Anderson.

I was hoping for package deal to see Colorado State Football and Rockies games.

  160. Buffoman June 6, 2011 3:37 pm

I agree that BYU and TCU should re-join the MWC. The talk about making and keeping the AQ status has to be less about the convenience and more about what makes the conference stronger and thus attractive to television and sponsors. FSU, BSU, UH, BYU, TCU, AFA, SDSU (improving) UNR have all had national exposure. Really, you want something to sell be a bit mean about who plays. Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado State? Their combined schedule is weak and add no attractiveness to the conference.

Television package would more than make up for the “travel issues”. Look at what the other big conferences are making.

MWC would be in a better position, but that’s probably not possible.

  161. Kazz June 6, 2011 3:38 pm

MWC logo concept isn’t something “original”.

Copycats of the different variations of VH1 and MTV News logos.

  162. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 6, 2011 3:44 pm

    #161,

TCU should not rejoin the MWC…They would be stupid to do such a thing. With the Big East TCU will be making like 10x+ more TV money and already in an AQ conference.

One thing that people are forgetting or maybe not totally understanding is that AQ BCS status does not equal big time money like the other 6 AQ conferences.

Even if MWC were to get AQ status the TV deal won’t jump up to $10M even $5M per school just because. Viewership drives TV deals and the MWC footprint, while it does cover some big markets is not the marque programs that the general public follow like the Big 10 or PAC12.

BCS bowl money is really chump change in comparison to TV money…yes its nice for these BCS conferences to have it, but what they really want is that TV money.

  163. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 6, 2011 3:56 pm

I could see BYU rejoining if the independent thing isn’t as lucrative and they get the tv deal they were looking for.

that would leave one more spot opened up to maybe get into the texas market. maybe houston?

  164. Kazz June 6, 2011 4:04 pm

Florida smashed Bama, now ASU smashing Florida…

Im sure it’s not the bats right?

  165. kama krab June 6, 2011 4:10 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

    #164,

I doubt BYU is coming back. From there initial T.V. contract, they are already making at least double what they would be making in the MWC and I see this move as only temporary until the Big 12 doors come opening up.

With regards to someone like Houston or any other Texas school out of conference USA, I don’t think they would move either after just doubling there T.V. money. The only way the MWC will attract teams to join the conference is by restructuring there T.V. deal, which I don’t see happening anytime soon since they have something like another 5-6 years on the contract. Oh and don’t expect CBS sports to be willing to renegotiate either cause we need to show ourselves as a power conference first, which will not happen for another couple of years and by then another conference shift may deplete the MWC again.

  166. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 6, 2011 4:14 pm

    #166,

We don’t need to exert ourselves as a power conference per se…We need to show an increase in viewership numbers. Not that it does not include us being competitive because it off course will. But it will also mean branding the MWC, getting in the faces of the consumer to say “hey were here”.

  167. Garret June 6, 2011 4:38 pm

It you want to see a 3D version of the MWC’s new logo, Merchant Warehouse’s new logo gives some idea of how it would look.

    http://www.cardpaymentoptions.com/credit-card-processors/merchant-warehouse-review-rating-and-complaints/

  168. Garret June 6, 2011 4:41 pm

For NCAA basketball revenue, the Big East gets over $20 mil/year while the MWC is at about $4 mil/year. UCONN getting all the way to the title game (both school who play in the title game make the same amount) and 11 Big East teams getting into the tourney means that the Big East will be over $30 mil/year for NCAA basketball money…way more than they get for being an AQ conference.

That an the projected 10x more in TV money the Big East will be getting soon when compared to the MWC means that there is no chance TCU would go back to the MWC.

  169. Garret June 6, 2011 4:45 pm

Each MWC team gets $1.1 mil from TV according to the Star-Advertiser article the other day. BYU should be over $10 mil from ESPN this year. AQ status would be an extra $1.5 mil or so per MWC school…add that to the TV money and that is nowhere close to what BYU will be getting.

Plus, BYU wanted exposure for their football team as a big reason for independence. They have their D-IAA game on BYUTV, something like 10 games on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPN, and just the Oregon State game is an unknown for TV (but that will be part of the Pac-12’s TV deal). So, 11 nationally televised games and their D-IAA game goes on BYUTV…that is really maximizing exposure.

  170. papajoe2 June 6, 2011 4:50 pm

In this year alone I threw away 3 pairs of Nike sneakers or jogging shoes because the glue holding the soles of the shoes just quit. Granted, those shoes were about 3 years old or maybe older as I don’t like to wear shoes, but I hardly used them. The first time I used Gorilla Glue to glue one side of the sole of the shoe back. Then the other side just separated. I just threw them away rather than gluing it back. On another pair, the bottom layer of the shoe started to fall off. I threw them away. Then the 3rd pair looked like the bottom was about to fall off too, so I dumped it. I was on my night time walk when the 1st occurrence happened. Ended up holding the sole and walking home with only the cover on my feet. Got puka sock.LOL. Hope the Nike uniforms don’t fall apart during the games. Or maybe the ladies will like that. Hehehehe.

  171. papajoe2 June 6, 2011 4:52 pm

Garret, you beat me to it with your #169. Football is not the big money producer for the Big East. Something that TCU will reap.

  174. Garret June 6, 2011 5:00 pm

Before UH fans look down on New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State, we should look at the numbers:

    2009 Final Sagarin Rating:

82 Wyoming (and they won their bowl game)

    105 UH

    106 Colorado State

    2008 Final Sagarin Rating:

    73 Colorado State

    91 UH

New Mexico has been pitiful on the football field during this BCS evaluation period…but their basketball team the last 3 seasons went 22-13, 30-5, and 22-12. That added a lot to the MWC’s RPI rating. Even more importantly, their basketball team actually won a game in the 2010 NCAA basketball tournament, which means they made a lot of money for the conference. UH fans know how difficult it is for a team to win a game in the NCAA tournament…

  175. Garret June 6, 2011 5:01 pm

    papajoe2,

I agree about how basketball is a big money winner for the Big East. It is amazing that they get more from the NCAA tournament than they get from the BCS!

  176. Dennis Halloran June 6, 2011 5:59 pm

Seattle Times has an article on the Husky Schedule and they discuss how UW will be heavily favored against UH

The correspondents also discuss how it could be a trap game for UW/

    Kazz,

Florida was smashing the ball yesterday. Sounds like they’re taking a cue from Coach Coolen in building bodies to generate power. They hold the record for HRs this year. It’s not the bats…

  190. Uttamesh Ganesh June 6, 2011 7:33 pm

I have got one suggestion for your blog site. It looks like right now there are a number of cascading stylesheet problems when launching a number of webpages within google chrome and firefox. It is operating alright in internet explorer. Perhaps you can double check this.

  191. papajoe2 June 6, 2011 7:43 pm

#190 slugger. You mean Florida had more than 158?? How many?

  192. Slugger June 6, 2011 8:09 pm

    papajoe2,

No, Florida did not exceed our total of 158. They went into the WCWS with 114 and were hitting more homers. They lead the nation this year in the number of HRs. The commentators said the coach contributed it to the girls generating power from their legs up. I’m sure the FL coach got the girls to work out more like our Wahine.

  193. hkwarrior June 6, 2011 8:38 pm

Is anyone throwing a T-Party anytime soon?

Asked last week but got no response – are we holding T-Gates again this coming football season. If so, will they be in the usual place(s).

Sorry to see Kolten go – whatever happened to Lenny Linsky?

As the sun rises in the east and bears do their thing in the woods, t-gates will happen thanks to Sailor Blue and Mrs Blue. Since there’s no 100% certainty in dealing with MWR, keep tracking the blog for info. Should be at the cabanas or the upper field. Wouldn’t be surprised if there was a t-gate rehearsal called for the beginning of August. Just as the players need to practice, we need to prepare for the season properly too. 😀

  207. MysteryPerson June 6, 2011 11:17 pm

Slugger, if it was not the bats, why did the Wahine hit 100 less home runs this year. Did they not workout like they were suppose to.

  208. hkwarrior June 6, 2011 11:19 pm

    Slugger,

Was jus joking!!! It was UH’s excuse last year or thats what everyone who didn’t know the program was saying.

MIH, that’s it they’re higher in stature thus the ball goes farther.

  209. iwonderwhytheyhateme June 6, 2011 11:40 pm

    #205,

Ask Pomai. He like throw one T-Party every time legislature is in session. haha.

  210. SteveM June 6, 2011 11:52 pm

    RE: #208

MysteryPerson — I am not a coach or player, but do not think the bats physically make a 100 home run difference. I think there might be a psychological difference, similar to baseball superstitions, when the bats were replaced. I’m just guessing…

  211. hkwarrior June 6, 2011 11:58 pm

    SteveM

    RE:#211

A co worker said that sofbows hitting coach retired last year or something to that effect. I don’t know if it is true but if it is……. Also seemed like the wahines weren’t agressive like they were last year. I wonder how many strike outs compared to last year. Just wondering.

  212. Slugger June 7, 2011 12:56 am

Didn’t we lose 5 seniors from the Wahine team? Also, Kelly is recovering from thyroid cancer. Hopefully, with double the number of players staying for summer school, working out & practicing together, they’ll do better next year. Don’t know about the hitting coach. It’s not the bats… 😉

In college and in the bigs, players come and go. The team just has to play together and build that timing, chemistry and strength. We love ’em win or lose…and believe in them.

    Night!
