The good teammate

He never started a UH game, but safety Gus Cunningham will be missed. Because of ROTC obligations, Cunningham is not on the Warriors’ spring roster.

Cunningham worked hard, never complained and eagerly embraced whatever role was available. By the end of the 2011 season, he found a spot on special teams.

This year, new disciplinary rules have been implemented for the Warriors — codes of conduct that Cunningham already embraced: High GPA, high effort, low maintenance.

His workmanlike contributions should be saluted.

To prepare for tonight’s match against UC Irvine — the nation’s toughest-serving team — the volleyball Warriors cranked up the JUGS machine to 68 mph during yesterday’s passing drills. The machine costs about $4,000 but it’s well worth it. While assistant coach Vernon Podlewski is an accurate server, the machine, when placed on a platform, simulates the height, angle and velocity of Irvine’s serves.

Here’s associate head coach Jeff Hall:

In my old age, I’ve become a cynic to cynicism. The Rainbow Warrior basketball team has a crafty point guard, two physical post players and a usually accurate outside shooter. They’ll be fine. There’s no need to panic as long as the WAC Tournament gives everybody a final shot.

I thought this was inspiring: How great are you?

We’ve become jaded and take for granted how hard it is to garner the mere privilege to represent the University of Hawaii. It just seems kids come into the program, put on a uniform and start playing. Once they’re done a new crop of kids are waiting in the wings.

Through the media, athletes are like Ice Bergs. For every great athlete you see above water, there are countless others who go unnoticed underwater.

For every former athlete you recall and recite names so fondly, those memories were made possible by athletes like Gus.

Mahalo, Gus, for accepting the privilege to represent Hawaii. May you face your future endeavors with the same commitment and fortitude you’ve displayed during your time in Manoa. You are a true Warrior for Life!

What is this thing about being 1st to post? Sorry I just don’t get it.

uhbooster — this started almost exactly 5 years ago in the “developmental” days of the Warrior Beat blog when ST would put up a new blog entry anytime between midnight and 3 pm. I’ll have to check the archives to see who first started it, but if I had to guess, I would say it was Da Punchbowl Kid. 🙂

wafan, the teacher, first questioned this, noting that it was like a bunch of students rushing to be the first to stand in line at the door. I remember noting that the difference was that Tsai-kos could break down the door and damage the walls too they pushed, shoved, and collided. Sorry, you need the visual of DPK, Bulla, A-joe, WreckinEyez, prideperiod, RK and the puny 230-lb guys like Al and me at an early Cattle Call to get this. 😐

Our blog host even declared himself first once, but was was accused of cheating. 👿

This is just one of the things that make The Warrior Beat unique.

It sounds like the Big East will use West Virginia’s money to pay the MWC $9 mil for Boise State’s exit fee and Boise State may be getting $5 mil from the Big East to leave early. So Boise State would avoid having to pay $5 mil to the MWC (their fee if they played in the MWC in 2012), the MWC would get a huge payday ($1.5 mil per school), and Boise State would get $5 mil for the “trouble” of leaving the MWC early.

The Broncos, according to several reports, are being nudged to join the Big East right away, with the cost for doing so — and for placing the school’s Olympic sports in the Western Athletic Conference — pegged at $8 million to $9 million.

But a person familiar with the situation, who requested anonymity because negotiations are ongoing, placed the cost at a more prohibitive $13 million to $14 million for Boise getting out of the Mountain West this year. That includes $5 million that the school is seeking from the Big East as relief to offset expenses, the person said.

  57. Garret February 10, 2012 11:01 am

So, it looks like UH’s home schedule this season will be Lamar, South Alabama, Nevada, UNLV, New Mexico, and Wyoming. The Boise State game would have been the biggest crowd draw, so that is too bad. It is also too bad that Boise State is leaving before UH joins…UH won’t get any of Boise State’s exit fee.

  58. Couch potato February 10, 2012 11:07 am

ST, that spartan race looks challenging. not sure that is a fav tsaiko event. do they have that in Hawaii? maybe start a team tsaiko.

  59. Garret February 10, 2012 11:07 am

The Big 12 is getting $30 mil to $40 mil for losing A&M and Missouri to the SEC…

The Big 12 is paying $9 mil of West Virginia’s $20 mil exit fee from the Big East (SEC money paying off the Big 12 contribution), with the Big 12 schools splitting the rest…

The Big East is taking that $20 mil and will use $14 mil or so to get Boise State for next season, with the Big East schools splitting the rest…

The MWC will take that $9 mil and split it among the 6 schools left, so SDSU will get $1.5 mil and UH/Nevada/Fresno will get $0 even though SDSU will leave the next year…

Boise State will avoid the $2 mil entrance fee to the Big East (paid for by West Virginia’s money), the $5 mil exit fee for the MWC (paid for by the Big 12 money), and could pocket $5 mil for leaving early.

Effectively, the SEC will have funded the next expansion of Boise State’s football stadium.

  60. Garret February 10, 2012 11:14 am

East Carolina’s AD has been part of the alliance discussions and said that the MWC/CUSA alliance could end up with *24* teams! That would be a huge conference…ripe for a core group to meet at an airport and break away.

  64. Garret February 10, 2012 11:26 am

Does UH still want a 13th game this season? Boise State will be going from 8 conference games to 7 conference games, so they will need another game to fill out their schedule. Just thinking out loud…

However, I just looked at Boise State’s nonconference schedule and don’t see any D-IAA games, so Boise State would probably look for an extra home game against a D-IAA school to compensate for their increased travel in the Big East.

It’s about time we start recruiting Florida kids. I know it’s tough to recruit from so far away but if we’re going to compete we definitely need speed. Florida kids have speed like no other. If we can get Florida speed, Texas size, and California skills in addition to the pride, underdog mentality, and toughness of the best local kids we will have a pretty good team. It’ll take time…

  76. Garret February 10, 2012 1:06 pm

Boise might actually be coming to Aloha Stadium this season. I hadn’t realized that the $9 mil the Big 12 is giving West Virginia to pay part of their exit fee is actually a loan that West Virginia has to pay back. The Big East wanted Temple for 2012?

A source close to the situation told Orangebloods.com on Friday the Big 12 is prepared to “loan” West Virginia up to half of the exit settlement. But the source said the loan would be “fully repaid” by WVU to the Big 12 over time.

Over the past 48 hours, the Big East was trying to get Boise State and then Temple to enter into the conference for the 2012-13 school year instead of the 2013-14 school year, sources said.

Without an eighth team for football, the Big East was threatening to sue the Big 12 for damages because of its TV contractual obligations, sources said. The sources said the Big East was even considering using some of the money being promised by West Virginia in exit fees as financial incentives to entice either Boise or Temple into the Big East one year early.

But Big East officials decided Thursday night to simply take West Virginia’s settlement offer of just under $20 million (to get out of a contractual obligation to wait 27 months to exit the Big East) and simply move on with seven schools (Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, South Florida and Syracuse).

  77. cake noodle February 10, 2012 1:16 pm

Last nite’s Nevada game shows that we need Wiseman. He is a great defender, good rebounder, gets the garbage rebounds and loose balls, and brings great eneregy to the team. All that was missing last night. He can defend the other teams guards and have a big size advantage on them and that was missing last night too. UH cannot win WAC tournament without him.

Gib is a great recruiter, great strategist, great grinder, relentless and works very hard. We got a real good coach. But one area I think he needs improvement in is communicating with the players and knowing how to individualize his personal relationship with them. I say this in looking at a number of players that were dissatisfied who have left the program. Some of them may have left anyway but in order to be a great coach, Gib needs to improve this facet of his coaching. Hope he grows into this. As his kids become teenagers and go to college, maybe he will get more experience and insights into dealing with college age kids.

I’m sure everyone is saying Wiseman was wrong to refuse to go into the game and I agree , but he doesn’t strike me as the punk type kid who thinks he is the man. Maybe Gib needs to learn how to parcel out more playing time among the players to keep them happy. This is a reality. Look at Kentucky who has all these superstars but Calipari is a master at keeping them happy. That’s one of the signs of a great, not just a good, coach.

I’ve had to apologize to my teenage and young adult kids many times bc “my way or the highway” approach sometimes doesn’t work. Hope Gib grows and learns from this bc the next player that might leave is Stokes who has gotten very little playing time.

What’s going on at Ka Leo? I saw the tv news report on their controversial “Don’t Change Partners, Change Positions.”

  81. ai-eee-soos February 10, 2012 1:46 pm

    for the 49er fans ….

” San Francisco 49ers: Gideon Yu has been named President and Co-Owner of the 49ers. Yu has an extensive business background, including working as the Chief Financial Officer of Facebook and YouTube before beginning a career in professional sports management. ”

Here’s the link to his wikipedia bio ….

  82. Curt February 10, 2012 1:46 pm

During my days at UH, streaking was a fad for a short period of time. I saw both male and female streakers “blazing” around. Ka Leo printed one of my photos of two co-eds + one young child which showed their back side. It didn’t generate any controversy as the local dailies were already printing streaking photos. Ahhh…the life of a college student can be exciting at times. But, usually not.

  83. Curt February 10, 2012 1:49 pm

Okay. Back to more important issues like western schools streaking eastward. 🙂

last night’s loss had nothing to do with not having one of the players.

it seemed to me that nevada was the more talented team on the court with one maybe two possible future nba players on that squad.

this wolfpack team’s starting five have now played together for two years. it showed.

i’d say give it a year or two and we could have the same quality athletes that they do.

and i do like to overall effort by our rainbow warriors.

  91. kev-1 February 10, 2012 2:41 pm

RE: last nights bball loss . . .

Regardless if people think Wiseman was the missing link or not, it doesn’t matter. There was call for disciplinary action, and that’s that. There was a conversation on here yesterday where someone questioned the football players being disciplined in the manner that they were. People need to realize that without such discipline, there are fewer wins and no team. As the cliche goes, no one is bigger than the team. Whatever Wiseman needs to do to return to the team, he should do or move on.

Now, I do think that Ostrowski should take the open shot more than he does. On numerous occasions last night he was wide open but waited to dish out the ball. Even the commentating crew was saying that he needed to take more shots. The guy was a scoring machine in high school. He needs to take that role a bit more in college, especially when he’s left open. And Coach Gib needs to give him that freedom too.

  92. Da Punchbowl Kid February 10, 2012 2:44 pm

I was thinking the same thing as I watched the game, al.

  93. kev-1 February 10, 2012 2:46 pm

Al . . . Coach Gib said in the post game interview on the court that he felt some guys didn’t show up to play. I’m not sure I necessarily agree with that. I agree that we got out-played and a little out-classed. That Nevada team is legit. We are close, just need to shore up the defensive side.

  94. d1shima February 10, 2012 2:48 pm

    al,

No need look any farther than the two featured transfers on the respective MBB teams last night: Johnson from Arizona vs Czyz, the former Duke-y.

    Clearly a level apart.

  95. kev-1 February 10, 2012 2:50 pm

Completely unrelated . . . ST, is Billy Hull still around? Tell him that some people miss his MMA blog on the SA. Plenty to talk about regarding MMA, but nowhere to talk about it. I visit BJPenn.com but a lot of people that post responses or comments to the articles are obscene/vulgar.

  96. Couch potato February 10, 2012 2:56 pm

almost that time for posters to position themselves for post 100. another one of those milestone numbers.

  97. Bowwar February 10, 2012 3:02 pm

IMHO, unless there is a severe disciplinary problem, Gib needs to give Shaq more PT if he truly wants to develop his talents for the future of the program. Besides, the existing starters would be more effective given occasional breathers.

Too bad about Wiseman, as he could have relieved Joston a number of times, as Thomas “lost his focus” a number of times and probably contributed to the loss. Thomas still thinks he’s a guard and taking long shots rather than focusing on his inside strength. Goodness, Nevada was rebounding so well because Thomas vacated his spot or didn’t block-out, leaving Vander all alone…

    all of the above.

  107. mikey February 10, 2012 3:28 pm

I beg to differ on one man play in basketball, as there are only 5 players on court at a time. As we saw many times games were lost without Miah is an example. The team was not the same without Wisemen especially agains a great team as Nevada. For sure we had a chance at home on blackout night maybe should have been a whiteout instead. As we saw team was lost without the help of Wisemen hussle and quickness under the boards. Just look at the rebound control minus -19? They killed us on Offensive rebounds. That has never happen to UH. But we controlled them playing In Nevada till the last few minutes and lost by few basket.

Also Zane was not the same after he got yanked few minutes after start giving Story 3 basket and foul for 7 points to start the game, as we saw in the result of 1 out of 8 3 points last night. Likewise if you want him to concentrate on scoring we needed Wisemen or Jeff to guard Story.

But the ref were also not in the game either as Burton continue to push and shove before shooting as we saw Miah fell to the ground with a shove, before he made the 3’s and Miah got called for the foul making it a 4 point play. Burton should have fouled out long before he made his 20 points.

But these things happens on a growing team and hope they all learn that we need each other in every game as well as in practice; that they need each other to improve each day and win. We’ll have another chance at WAC Tournament in LV. And I’m already packed to go.

  108. al February 10, 2012 3:31 pm

i am very glad that wiseman has been reinstated.

the words from both coach and player were spot on in this case.

    chicken skin moment…

  110. Couch potato February 10, 2012 3:34 pm

well the last 4 games that Wiseman played in he didn’t put up great numbers. maybe he was just in a funk. we all get that. for some it’s perpetual.

  111. al February 10, 2012 3:35 pm

    …moving on.

it was good to see miah get his stroke back last night.

it was good to see hauns play with more effectiveness and confidence.

it was good to see zane working hard defensively as best as he could, especially when your shots aren’t falling.

it is good that wiseman made the wise choice of approaching the gibber and his team.

all this is good for the team, i hope we can take it out on the bulldogs tomorrow.

  113. kev-1 February 10, 2012 3:50 pm

Lesson learned? For those that question the discipline tactics, I guarantee you this: Trevor Wiseman learned a valuable lesson. I am sure he is aware that he could have, and should have been a factor in the loss against Nevada. He has owned up to his mistakes and is ready for a second chance.

Watch out for Wiseman now. His playing time diminished because Thomas had the hot hand. Hopefully he realizes that is a cyclic thing. The kid will have a renewed fire about his play, you watch.

  118. cake noodle February 10, 2012 4:33 pm

al, Nevada is not that much better than Hawaii. Hawaii lost by only 3 at Nevada but gets outrebounded by 19 at home? Wiseman makes a big difference against the better teams. He’s a quick jumper on rebounds and can drive the length of the court after rebounding to make a mismatch on forwards that are guarding him. He gives UH another ballhandler at the forward spot that other teams don’t have. He gives that spark that puts UH on runs. UH plays with a different identity with Bereton getting more playing time instead of Wiseman. ( Gee, I’m making Wiseman sound like a superstar which he obviously is not so don’t get me wrong.) It was defense and rebounding that Gib stresses and that was missing last night and will continue to be missed without Wiseman getting playing time as that are his strengths. Wiseman makes a difference against teams like Nevada and New Mexico State.

Sure the kid made a mistake, but Gib needs to look at his mistakes too, like his substitution patterns and relating to players. Deone Burton is driving at will during the game and he puts in his best defender Garrett Jefferson only in the last 2-3 minutes. Gib replaces Miah with Bobby Miles with 12 minutes left for a couple of minutes and Miles cannot break the press, turns over the ball and next time down is trapped when he picks up his dribble and has to call time out. Nevada increases its lead from 3 to seven with Miles in there.

Anyway, now that Wiseman’s back, maybe that will also wake up Gib that maybe Wiseman,Shaq and Jefferson should be played more so they will develop more and be more experienced during tournament and playoff time.

  119. RedZone February 10, 2012 5:00 pm

    Good evening Warrior fans!

  124. Haleakala February 10, 2012 5:35 pm

The Lakers and Knicks game just got over. The Jeremy Lin phenomenon continues on. The point guard from Harvard who almost didn’t make the team a couple of weeks ago had another tremendous game and the Knicks beat the Lakers 92-85. His stats 38 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists. The Knicks are a different team when he is playing since he gets all of his team mates involved in the plays. It’s the biggest news in the NBA right now.

  125. wafan February 10, 2012 5:36 pm

Good to have Wiseman back. Good move on his part to recognize the folly.

    ‘Attaway!

I guess Kobe knows who Lin is now, eh? 😆

  130. Shoko February 10, 2012 5:52 pm

Jeremy Lin definitely got game. I saw him play when he was sent to the D-League (Reno Bighorns).

  131. jkjones February 10, 2012 5:53 pm

@127. I didnt get your source, but if that comment came from chow they have done evaluations. despite the depth on paper, someone is not buying into the athletic attributes they need and whats available. An OL that runs a pro-set requires a higher standard of athletic ability. Being big is just one ingredient. For those who just bean count, that is NOT enuff to establish quality depth. Applying the 2.5 rule/rotation to 5 OL positions (excluding TEs), Hawaii will need 12-13 OLM, primed, and ready to play. The number can be lessened by some who can play several of those OL positions

  132. Jason February 10, 2012 5:57 pm

What’s going on at Ka Leo? I saw the tv news report on their controversial “Don’t Change Partners, Change Positions.”

Curt: I didn’t see the TV story, but I did find the article you refer to. It’s not a surprise—when I was a student, it seemed they always had a sex-related issue every year when Valentine’s Day approached. I even remember one guy who wrote an article on the best places to have sex on campus, along with an attempt at a sex advice column.

P.S. Hi everyone! First (post in a while)! 🙂

  133. Haleakala February 10, 2012 5:57 pm

D1. I guess Kobe knows who he is now though he didn’t who Lin was yesterday. Kobe struggled in the first half but kept the Lakers in the game in the second half. He ended up with 34 points.

It makes you wonder how much even the professional coaches know about how an athlete will perform. It makes me think about Colt Brennan. Colt never had a chance to get in a real NFL game though he had a tremendous preseason, because his coaches knew better. Makes me wonder.

These are the times that will be missed and cherished long past graduation & reminisced during one’s lifetime. Every guy on the team should never forget that they part of a select few out of the 15000 plus on campus who get to experience what many others will never experience in their lifetimes.

#141, whoa whoa BHF2, go poach somewhere else. Besides, the economy has made schools look at making changes. Parents want to send all their kids to the same school. Made economic sense to make SF coed. As an alumni, I was against it, but I can see that the addition of boys has increased SF’s opportunities. I now fully support it, they graduate their first coed senior class next year. Go Saints!

ECONOMICS LESSON ABOUT CO-ED SCHOOLS. When I grad high school in Philadelphia, the Estate of Mother Katherine Drexel (yeah, Drexel University too), on the summit of Drexel Hill, was donated to be a girls school, it was named Archbishop Prendergast H.S. Later, and on the same piece of land, an all boys school was built, Monsignor Bonner H.S. (Al Atkinson, LB, New York Jets and John Cappelletti, RB, LA Rams). TODAY THEY ARE CLOSING BOTH OF THESE SCHOOLS AND CONVERTING THE LANDS TO A “HIGHER AND BETTER USE” FOR INCOME. The main contender is Penn State University who wants to put a sattelite campus and conference center there for Bachelor, Masters, PhD work. Lesson is, you gotta think long range, and you gotta balance risk. If you want a single sex school do the math and make sure it works, commit to making it work, don’t just wish it will work because it is too painful to imagine a different future. If the math doesn’t work, re-do the numbers with the school as co-ed.

  206. wafan February 11, 2012 8:37 am

    2nd century!

    Almost lunch time.

  207. Kekoa February 11, 2012 8:43 am

Re: 208 ~ Nope…his usually sounds more like a *Boom Shakalaka!*

  208. Buffoman February 11, 2012 8:43 am

Why did we not make a stronger attempt (or did we and it was not in the cards) to recruit Lia Galderia and her teammate? They were stellar since sophomores and I would have thought we’d be working hard to try to get them to come to UH.

    Are they not D1 material?

  209. wafan February 11, 2012 8:45 am

    Kekoa . . .

Sorry to hear about the emergencies at home. Hope Pops and the princess are doing a lot better.

  210. wafan February 11, 2012 8:48 am

  213. Kekoa February 11, 2012 8:54 am

@213 ~ I agree Buffoman! I watched this young lady (Lia) play in a few clips during the past 2 seasonal playoffs. Very impressive. I hope she gets recruited by UH.

@214 ~ Doing follow-up for both now. Mahalo.

  214. gmahoney February 11, 2012 8:56 am

#217, oh, I going tell Sister Joan!

  215. gmahoney February 11, 2012 8:58 am

Kekoa, sorry to hear about your 911’s, hope all is well now. KK, see you later? PPJ2, be careful in the ceded lands.

  216. whitey February 11, 2012 8:58 am

good morning tsaikos and a good start for the wsb.

  217. papajoe2 February 11, 2012 9:01 am

Buffo, Kekoa, I think both of them are headed for Washington State. I could be wrong though. I always thought the outer islands kids would want to go to UH because its like going away, but comfortable enough like staying home. I guess more recruiting effort is/was needed.

  218. ai-eee-soos February 11, 2012 9:01 am

    # 213 and # 218.

Heard on the TV sports segment, that both Lia & a teammate are going to Wash.State.

  219. Buffoman February 11, 2012 9:02 am

Kekoa, the reason I asked is that she and her teammate are going to Washington State. My questions were: 1).did we make a strong attempt to recruit them or 2).was the coaching consensus that they were not D1 material and as such were not actively pursued, or 3). we tried but they wanted to go away.

  220. tom mui February 11, 2012 9:13 am

After all the excitement, anticipation, frustration about football recruiting, signing etc, everything seems calm on the blog except for WBB recruiting and even that is pretty mild!

  221. al February 11, 2012 9:28 am

kekoa…i hope all’s well with the clan members.

thank the Lord that you are their rock.

  222. al February 11, 2012 9:30 am

lia galdeira and dawnyelle awa have both signed on to play at wsu. it sounded like they’ve already inked the binding loi’s.

probably the lure of playing in the pac 12 was too great for them to pass up.

  223. ai-eee-soos February 11, 2012 9:30 am
