The Drive

The Warriors today will make the 229-mile drive from Manhattan Beach, where they stayed since Wednesday night, to Fresno.

For their last trip to Fresno, they pulled into — and out of — an In-N-Out Burger. Apparently, the popular eatery has difficulty accommodating a 90-member party.

We’ll have pictures later from today’s modified practice.

    Ekahi!

    Go bows!

Sad day, spent gobble google day in Boston with some ohana from back home, but alas today, taking my two nieces to visit the dreaded school on the James river….how sad.

  2. Shoko November 28, 2014 5:13 am

It’s a bit irritating that the Apple (early this morning) and Best Buy web stores are down. How’s a braddah supposed to spend his hard-earned kala on Black Friday?

Anyway, did I mention its friggin cold here on the mainland?

Thank you for your attention. That is all.

  3. RainboWarrior November 28, 2014 5:17 am

Happy Black Friday. Go Bows. Beat them bulldogs!

  4. Maddog50 November 28, 2014 5:38 am

Coupla tings…..great article on the two freshmen OL. With Leo K., John W. and a few other it bodes well for the future along with soon to be Sr. Ben C. Ferd’s column today cited info that was out there on another sight regarding Fresno States vision for the future which sets out to raise the Academic and Athletic profile at FSU in tandem. The people there are obviously “visionary” and committed. There is absolutely no reason why UH can not set out to do the same with the proper people in place. I can only hope some folks with a certain degree of grey matter set out on a course to do the same thing. You can put me in “part of the solution” column. GO WARRIORS!!!!!!

  5. hatakeman November 28, 2014 6:38 am

A win at Fresno will make it feel like a 10-3 season. Go Bows!!!

  6. 3-Prong November 28, 2014 6:46 am

boo, sorry to hear about the Boola last week. The Cats playing #2 on their home turf. Big challeng fro a texas team.

….otherwise a Happy Aloha Friday in Paradise to all. Let’s Go Road Warriorsl

  7. hatakeman November 28, 2014 6:48 am

By the way, I was one of the fans that left Aloha Stadium with 20 seconds left. Sitting in the bus, the guy next to me says, ” Hawaii won.” What? You said Hawaii won? Yeah. How? Touchdown pass to Kemp. Wait. There were only 20 seconds left when UNLV scored. And I didn’t see it. So who knows, I gotta say Hawaii get chance.

  8. Old Diver November 28, 2014 6:53 am

Is there a reason Manhattan Beach is the California pit stop?

  9. dopaco24 November 28, 2014 7:09 am

Manhattan Beach is where Chow lives, isn’t it?

SMU hires Clemson OC as head coach, $3 mil per year. How we gonna compete?

  11. Boolakanaka November 28, 2014 7:17 am

3 prong damn they got some big boys for small college–see:http://cruathletics.com/roster.aspx?path=football

  12. A-House November 28, 2014 7:37 am

    ST:

whomever coordinated the “land leg” should have done some “intelligence” work and talk to people about possible “water hole” to feed the team along the way to Fresno

Then discuss/clear with the coaching staff, take order, and called in order to assist the restaurant and the players

In-N-Out Burger has 3 menu choices – they are fast, but for 90 customers at once would “tax” any eating establishment except a “buffet type” eating place

this is where a Golden Coral restaurant would have been ideal – even so, I would call ahead and give them a “heads-up”

  13. A-House November 28, 2014 7:40 am

speaking of “hiring” – is not Gib and Akana covered by the “union”? IIC, all UH coaches are covered by the union.

most uncharacteristic for a Hawaii union to be totally quiet when such a “high profile” person is fired “without cause”

  14. 808WarriorFan November 28, 2014 8:05 am

Bring an In and Out Double Cheeseburger back for me please…..

  15. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 8:06 am

It’s a beautiful day in Clovis.
Well, beautiful if you enjoy fog.
But according to Google Maps, I’m a mere 29-minute drive from Table Mountain Casino.

  16. 808WarriorFan November 28, 2014 8:06 am

    Make that 2 of ’em

  17. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 8:07 am

And also 47 minutes away from Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino.

  18. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 8:08 am

This is the place to eat: http://www.thesilverdollarhofbrau.com/index2.htm

  19. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 8:09 am

I wouldn’t worry about the players being fed. The players get plenty of food on road trips. Think of it as having two banquets a day.

  20. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 8:14 am

    A-House:
I think there can be dispute when somebody is fired “with cause.” In that case, the person is terminated without pay.
But “without cause” means that the fired person gets fully compensated.
A fired person can’t say he was damaged since he’s getting paid not to work. He can’t say his reputation was tarnished because nobody is accusing him of anything.
Best thing to do is collect the money, be grateful that an automatic rollover was written into the contract for last year’s 20 victories, and find another job.

  21. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 8:16 am

    A-House:
Not sure about the “fast” part with In-N-Out Burger. Every time I go there, I’m order No. 87 or so. And I look up, and they’re calling No. 63. There’s always a long wait.

  22. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 8:17 am

And in the merchandise display, they always show shirts and caps. But they never, ever have caps. It’s like that non-existant Boardwalk piece in McDonald’s Monopoly.

  23. tom November 28, 2014 8:35 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

The only memory I had of Fresno was wall to wall pizza establishments.

Good trivia question would be: What replaces Broadwalk in various versions of Monopoly – like the Hawaii version, McDonald’s version etc.

  24. Andrew November 28, 2014 8:38 am

    13.

I think it will be interesting to see how quickly the public’s opinion of Gib will change once the NCAA comes out with the violations and sanctions.

  25. LES PARK November 28, 2014 8:40 am

In and Out Burger can make a sandwich with as much as 4 patties. I forget what they call it. A double double is a favorite, milk shake. They should open one up on Oahu. Each order is cooked to order is why it takes longer than McDonalds. This road trip with the 200 mile trek up to Fresno, the thousands of miles of travel is why logistics is a problem not seen by any other team anywhere. We are at the top of that list. SMU’s new coach is making 3 mill. He was OC at Clemson at 1.5 mill. They were lucky JJ resigned. I think Hawaii burned JJ out. And lastly, One day late but thank Steve Tsai for his honest and informative reporting.

  26. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 8:47 am

There are no direct flights from Honolulu to Fresno. You can travel with stopovers in San Francisco or Los Angeles. But the planes are too small to carry the entire travel party in one aircraft. So driving is the best way, I supposed. But with a stop for lunch, it becomes a five-hour drive from L.A. Then again, those are nice buses.

  27. Aaron November 28, 2014 9:38 am

it’s too bad Aloha Airlines isn’t still around – they used to fly to Bakersfield, I think. a bit of a shorter drive to Fresno…

  28. 3-Prong November 28, 2014 9:49 am

boo, like they say, everythings big in Texas!

  29. A-House November 28, 2014 10:06 am

    st:

    long lines/wait at In-N-Out Burger

ALL THE MORE REASON TO CALL AHEAD TO PLACE AN ORDER AT IN-N-OUR BURGER

    “time is precious”

when we went to Houston, the bus that picked us up at the airport was built by Mercedes – comfortable seats with nice interior and thanks for A/C

after that it was all down hill as the bus on the long ride to the Space Center and Gulf Coast was “old”, very noisy, very bumpy ride, and the microphone was not operating so our tour guide had to move up and down to tell us what was being said by the bus driver

next day, our driver did not speak English on our tour of Houston where we went round in circles, 3 xs, in a 5-6 block area, then out about 20 miles to a shopping complex, then to a restaurant for lunch, and the long ride back to Houston – Rice University campus is located in a residential neighborhood – so went from houses to campus in a matter of 5′

  30. jm2375 November 28, 2014 10:07 am

Good morning Tsaikos! To those of you braving the Black Friday crowds, I salute you.

    Safe travels to the Warriors.

IF UH had called ahead and IF all the orders had been the same, MAYBE In-N-Out could have handled it…
The In-N-Out near UCLA is really small, barely any seats, almost no parking and the drive-thru line goes around the block, especially on weekend nights. Dunno why they don’t try to find a larger space.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

  31. beans November 28, 2014 10:24 am

    ST
How about some pertinent news on the players? Hamburgers are hamburgers! except for Wolfgang’s Steak House in Waikiki. They are made from the trimmings of their usda prime aged beef.
They put IN-N-OUT to shame. With white table linens to boot at almost the same price. $10.
Now please back to tomorrows game! Any starters out? With Joey back, Woosey more confident and Kemp on a high, are we going to throw to the tight ends more?

  32. Candy November 28, 2014 10:30 am

GEEV’em Warrior’s in Fresno and Wahine here!!

  33. SteveM November 28, 2014 10:57 am

    Good morning everyone!

Waiting to do Black Friday shopping online… but can’t into the servers or glacially slow . This is the cyberspace equivalent to waiting outside the brick and mortar store. Good day to travel to Fresno and not eat in malls. Hope the bus ride went well.

  34. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 11:11 am

    Who’s Woosey?
I think Malepeai and Lataimua are back. Jerrel Jackson is done for the year.

  35. jimmy the lock November 28, 2014 11:20 am

I was Woosey once. A few shots too many.

    TGIF!
GO WAHINE! ADOLPHO, LONG, & MENDOZA
    GO WARRIORS!

  36. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 11:20 am

Not sure if Vele counts as a tight end, but they’ve thrown — successfully — to him a lot in recent games. He does a good job of tag-and-release routes. Moleni did the same on the TD pass from Iosefa.

  37. st. anthony trojan November 28, 2014 11:32 am

ST…DO they hold their noses if they are passing bakersfield… n how long…
(if they are go on 99 or 5)

EASY to beat problems… should have a rented van..go on ahead n order..n take to a nice rest stop.. n eat there n enjoy…have many nice rest stops…

Did that drive…few days after 11/11…only to se us loose there in Reno…
and wondering if the flight home would be cancelled or delayed a lot…as all planes were grounded…

But always remember Bakersfield…good place to clean your nostrils…he he he

  38. UHfan808 November 28, 2014 11:58 am

Good Aloha Friday day after Thanksgiving, Tsai-kos!

In-N-Out Burgers for lunch for 90 ct bus load sounds “fun”: Get one, eat it while waiting for annodah while digesting then get annodah and repeat a few times! Everyone leaves happy and well-digested! 😛

Safe travels, Warrior Team! Mebbe would be a great time to do mental walk-thrus for what to do and who does what on the field ..but… Do they do that mental conditioning stuff?!

Safe travels to all traveling to Fresno for tomorrow’s game!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  39. Andrew November 28, 2014 12:44 pm

Now that Marshall has lost, at least the MWC is guaranteed a team in one of the major New Year’s bowls.

  40. BigFan November 28, 2014 1:26 pm

#37 SA Trojan, not quite clear on your post. Is 11/11 a significant date or did you mean 9/11? You also said “se us loose in Ren0” as in loose with loose women? lol.
Does clean your nostrils mean digging your nose (ugh, not a pretty sight), ha, ha, ha.
    Just having fun with you.
The city of Fresno needs to clean up their city as it is like the gateway to resorts like Big Bear which is a beautiful place.
    Go Warriors.

  41. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 1:31 pm

The team just arrived in Fresno.
They’ll get settled, then head out to practice in about an hour.

  42. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 2:23 pm

    Wow. Bobby Hauck announces resignation.

  43. Shoko November 28, 2014 2:24 pm

Colorado State just lost to Air Force. If Utah State beats Boise State, I don’t think any MWC team will get the at-large. Right?

  44. Shoko November 28, 2014 2:26 pm

Hauck resigned? That’s news to me!

  45. st. anthony trojan November 28, 2014 2:27 pm

big fan.. will have to hire you as ‘proof reader’ 4 me…’

9/11 is what it should read….n lose…n the sweet aroma from passing Bakersfield…
from the cow dung…will clean it out.. no need fingers…unless u using then to soop that aroma from going into you ne further…he he he

  46. Shoko November 28, 2014 2:28 pm

  48. st. anthony trojan November 28, 2014 2:30 pm

  49. Shoko November 28, 2014 2:30 pm

    Nevermind.

  50. Shoko November 28, 2014 2:33 pm

Have to question the timing of the announcement, though. Why not after the rivalry game?

  51. st. anthony trojan November 28, 2014 3:25 pm

Guess he has class n step down…. while ‘others’ are ‘not a quitter’…maybe they worked out a deal 4 n with him.. ne way.. classy way to go…instead of dividing the sports community…

big fan ok now.. maybe he he he…

    UCLA ???

    Stanford beats ucla.

    ARIZONA wins pac12 south.

    How you figgah?

  54. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2014 4:30 pm

Warriors finished a nice walk/run-through at Fresno City College.
Actually, it’s the downtown stadium where the Rams play their games.

  55. d1shima November 28, 2014 4:41 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    GO Spartans!
    GO (now-headless) Rebels!

    GooooOOOO Warriors!

  56. champ November 28, 2014 4:43 pm

Would our HC ever consider hiring an OC that will use the “run and shoot” or an offshoot of it? I wonder. However, based on observations that answer would be no because some people cannot swallow their pride, and that in my opinion, would be Norm Chow. Too proud and quite a bit arrogant. What do you think? Another year of “stumbling, mumbling” and fumbling kind of Offense. WRs that drop 13 balls and is told that he has the tools just concentrate? We need more talent, not arrogant talent but hard workers with talent. Oh my God! Another year of misery. Woe is me.

  57. st. anthony trojan November 28, 2014 5:26 pm

woe is you n many others champ…ur not exclusively alone…lol lol

  58. Tempmanoa November 28, 2014 5:49 pm

Looking at stats and the computer models, this game is reasonably (and realistically) winnable by us. Fresno has been exceeding expectations, including on the road vs Nevada. To win we need to stop their running game taking advantage of the matchup between their offensive line and our defensive line, and force predictable passing downs, we strengthen our blitz game and our pass coverage. Fresno has not been able to prevent some key sacks, so we need to be able to go after the QB. On the offensive side, we need to run Joey and company enough to force Fresno to put more men in the box and keep the defensive backs focused on run support, our chances of winning go up. A low scoring defensive game also favors us. We have the worst turnover margin in the Mountain West, so we need to turn this around.

  59. el burro sabio November 28, 2014 7:11 pm

Would June Jones hire an OC that uses the read-option? If he didn’t, would he be considered too proud and quite a bit arrogant, considering his offense hasn’t worked this year?

  60. beans November 28, 2014 7:12 pm

Joey straight ahead, St. Juste wide with pitches or misdirection, Kemp and Keelan long, Harding, Barton mid, Puu’ Robinson short or screens. Then mix in Moleni, Vele. Run on 3rd and short. and move the chains. Go Bows Go! Win this one.

  61. Old School Dave November 28, 2014 7:51 pm

Interesting commentary on the state of UNLV football. Lots of familiar sounding problems and similarities to UH football.

    http://m.reviewjournal.com/columns-blogs/ed-graney/culture-not-coaching-unlv-s-problem-football

  62. 808 November 28, 2014 8:03 pm

No! June Jones would not hire an OC that uses the read option. If his offense doesn’t work, he would just try harder with the run and shoot. Oh wait, I take that back, he would just Quit.

Go Warriors! Make it a 3 game winning streak to end the year.

  63. cocobean November 28, 2014 8:13 pm

#56. champ. There’s no room on the staff. The only way we get a new OC is if Ben Jay forces Chow to dump a coach to open up a spot. Chow didn’t want to let Kaumeyer go last season but Ben made him do it.

  64. Old Diver November 28, 2014 8:15 pm

    61

True, but we also have to accept the reality that Norm Chow has not had success as a coordinator after USC at BCS schools and the NFL. One can hardly blame facilities or support for that.

  65. Buffoman November 28, 2014 9:52 pm

Watching the Wahine v-ball team play. This does not look like one of our better teams. If they are selected to the NCAA tournament, I do not see them advancing much beyond the first round.

Something seems to be missing. Good, but not one of the great teams. I hope that I am wrong about their tournament performance, if they get selected.

  66. Tempmanoa November 28, 2014 10:00 pm

Both June and Chow have hired Offensive Coordinators and turned over play calling duties. June hired Hal Mumme last year and before that he hired a coach from Houston to call plays. Mumme was one of the originators of the Air Raid an offense based on the old BYU and Texas Tech offense and the coach from Houston also ran the Air Rad. Chow hired Tommy Lee, then Price, (none of whom ran Chow’s offense) and now he has Wynn to run the offense and call plays (Wynn’s background is in a throwing spread offense he learned from the current Fresno OC– a guy Chow calls a throwing coach). Price and Tommy were let go, but Wynn is calling plays in an offense that is not what Chow started with here. We now have the QB in the shotgun instead of under center. June started here with the QB under center, and tight ends, when it was not working he took out the tight ends for receivers and put the QB in the shotgun (against the advice of Mouse Davis, by the way).

  67. hossana November 28, 2014 10:00 pm

Re: Champ’s comments and those of you with a short memory. Remember last year’s team that was chalking up the points and yardage such that our offense was in the top 25 even ahead of Nevada’s offense aka Rolovich. Think about it…..the reason why our offense stumbled this year is the lack of quality players starting with the QB and offensive line and, yes, quality receivers…go back and read last year’s team results and look at the offensive stats and you will see Hawaii was definitely right up there offensive wise but the defense couldn’t stop anybody, anyone at anytime. You get the players and there wouldn’t be a problem and there will be some quality players coming off their redshirt year playing next year barring any injuries.

  68. st. anthony trojan November 28, 2014 10:43 pm

yea the defense sucked last year…
so they fire tony n K…
