The ‘Bows of summer

Yesterday was the first day of classes for nine first-year Warriors.

They are enrolled in the so-called bridge program — two full-credit courses that run through early August. The program, available to all UH students, leads to the start of the Warriors’ training camp on Aug. 4.

The program is a helpful jump-start for UH newcomers, who can earn six credits ahead of their first fall semester, as well as adapt to a college classroom. For UH football, women’s volleyball and soccer players, it triggers the start of their scholarship payments.

The new Warriors are expected to begin their supervised conditioning program this week.

    Yep, you’re the 1.

Wondering if the UH athletic department is a single line item in the overall UH budget submission. IMHO, there should be 2 line items, one for Title IX, and another for revenue sports. In this manner, Legislature can see the cost of complying with Title IX and can eventually target its support. Title IX is a drain on the revenue generating aspects of college athletics. If Title IX is fully supported by Legislature, then the rest of the athletic department would not face too much of a deficit.

Welcome to the new Warriors and Wahine!

  5. Boolakanaka June 30, 2015 7:27 am

Lucid comments 1. More than a few states directly subsidize the requirements of title IX. Given the limited market place and geographic isolation of the state, this would appear to be a given for most other states.

  6. Stephen Tsai June 30, 2015 7:49 am

I should thoroughly read “Ferd” Lewis’ articles.
The athletic department will end up in the red again, but it seems to operate without interruption. I’m not sure how/when money is moved to cover the shortcomings. You never see any announcements that money is going to be moved from this account to that account.

I do like A-House and his family.
But sometimes the Internet is a tricky place to navigate. It appears A-House got lost, and thought he was commenting on this blog when he actually was on another site.

Hit the books hard and hit the training hard. Best to the summer session scholar athletes.

Agree with 1 and boola, good points about title IX.

Leave the light on, A-house will be back.

    I need supervised conditioning.

Leave some bread crumbs on the path, they’ll come.

    At least A-House is #1 in Volleyshots…and #2 and #3.

I go to the BI for a couple days, come back hit the WB graphic on my favorites page, and low and behold: the current blog comes up. Thank you to the gods of tech for making this wonderful thing so!

Great news in the SA about the Warriors sleeping in dorms for fall camp, thanks for the article, ST. I hope this will be the same for all fall camps going forward.

  11. HawaiiMongoose June 30, 2015 9:00 am

ST, thank you for the quick answer on Paul Harris. I’m glad to hear he’s eligible and in shape. I watched his highlight video and he looks like someone who could give the team an extra spark this season.

is the trail of crumbs leading me in the right direction?

  13. A-House June 30, 2015 10:36 am

it still boggles my mind that UHAD had to carry all the salary load because of upper campus miscues in the firing and hiring of coaching staff

DPK: you sure you were on the correct “blog”? me shall try again!

  14. Da Punchbowl Kid June 30, 2015 10:46 am

    Col. A-House –

Yup. Did it three times in fact. Duplication is authentication.

    Welcome back to WB btw.

  15. bowwar June 30, 2015 11:27 am

I agree that Title IX compliance and resulting “non-revenue” generating programs should be a separate budget and supported by legislative funds.

Paul Harris now listed on the Post- Spring roster. Maybe some others added in too.

There are a couple people still awaiting confirmation because of that syllabus situation we mentioned a few posts ago.

Great to hear that the team will be housed in the dorms during fall camp. Small steps, from dance studio to dorms. during camp.

Student housing is now a part of the “arms race” in college sports:

  23. oneseason June 30, 2015 12:41 pm

#22 … That is great to hear. And with UH being the state’s flagship university, UH should be able to win the “arms race” against the MW Western Div: Fresno St, San Diego St, Nevada, San Jose St, and UNLV. And, as “luck” should have it, we get to play them all again this season 🙂

I was once out strolling one very hot summer’s day
When I thought I’d lay myself down to rest
In a big field of tall grass
I laid there in the sun and felt it caressing my face
As I fell asleep and dreamed
I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie
And that I was the star of the movie
    This really blew my mind
The fact that me, an overfed long-haired leaping gnome
Should be the star of a Hollywood movie, hm
    But there I was, mm
I was taken to a place
The hall of the mountain kings
I stood high upon a mountain top
    Naked to the world
    In front of
    Every kind of girl
There was long ones, tall ones, short ones, brown ones
Black ones, round ones, big ones, crazy ones
Out of the middle came a lady
    She whispered in my ear
    Something crazy
    She said
Spill the wine and take that pearl….

  28. Na Alii Pride June 30, 2015 2:56 pm

Correct me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t living in the dance studios for fall camp been a tradition since Dick Tomey’s time? The article says that they’ve been doing the dance studio thing since 2005. Where were they in previous years?

  29. Maddog50 June 30, 2015 3:36 pm

Don’t know about dance studio. It was Pearl or under the deck of the pool in the early 70’s. Great memories!!! Haven’t slept outside since-

  30. Tempmanoa June 30, 2015 5:44 pm

#1 This past session, UH did present their budget to the legislature with two line items seperated from the rest of the UH budget: (1) What UH called “Title IX Compliance Costs”, and (2) the cost of travel subsidies paid for visiting Mountain West football teams. But the legislature did not support those items. They stuck with a lump sum budget to UH which UH would allocate to various programs, including athletics. This is part of the autonomy issue where the state is not supposed to “budget” for UH (even if the UH said in effect, we don’t want autonmy over Title IX and travel subsidies). As to Title IX, UH just hired a Title IX Compliance officer to report directly to the Chancellor (along with staff and two professionals).

  31. Da Punchbowl Kid June 30, 2015 5:46 pm

    Thanks for that clarification, Tempmanoa!

  33. kahuna June 30, 2015 5:55 pm

Stephan…..how can you say that roster was not a summer roster and more of a post spring roster? It said “SUMMER ROSTER” on the top of the web page. It also have pictures of a few kids that were not here for the spring….like Aaron Zwahlen and Paul Harris.

    Tempmanoa #30:

me totally confused about UH hiring a “new” Title IX compliance person with 2 “professionals” – is this part of the “butter up” to NCAA?

does this mean that UH will now have 2 compliance officers with totally separate functions, etc.? or new one will be under Amanda?

where is the $$$ coming from? UHAD budget or upper campus??? was this Matlin’s decision?

perhaps, Matlin knows that he will be gaining new or current donors giving more to fund this new positions?

I must admit the UH, in general, surely knows how to screw things up administratively – I must questions their decision making process/judgment and leadership.

Congrats to Kory and Brian on being awarded scholarships. I know without a scholarship I never would have attended college. I am so thankful as I tell my friends I am the second luckiest guy from Englewood in Chicago—the luckiest guy is Derrick Rose!!! I really wish Kory the best for a breakout year would love nothing more. I am in the final phase of assembling the field for my golf outing benefitting Na Koa. Order about 1500 worth of merch from H Zone Felix Calvo has been great. And my friends Kim and Joyce at Na Koa—should have about 80 guys who will participate. It is so good to be a Warrior- again congrats to Kory and Brian!!!!!!

Interesting news about Kyle Kafentzis’ kid, Austin, transferring from Wisconsin and signing on with Nevada. I wonder if Rolo reached out to Kyle or vise versa. Might be a good fit with the Packs offense.

  38. Shoko July 1, 2015 6:26 am

Also sounds like Austin’s decision to transfer was compounded by Kyle’s disappointment in the fan base that wanted Gary Andersen out after last season’s record (10 wins). Yikes!

  39. 1 July 1, 2015 7:05 am

@Tempmanoa #30: Thank you for the information. I believe UH should still continue to make separate annotation for Title IX and Travel subsidies to highlight the cost of UH athletics. While the Legislature will always give a lump sum figure, someday they may actually consider the Title IX and Travel in computing this figure. Now the cost of Title IX increases with a director and staff, more expense that the revenue generating sports must fund. I am guessing that that this would be about an additional $150 – $200K/year.

  40. Shoko July 1, 2015 7:20 am

I think its hard to achieve complete autonomy when the legislature controls UH’s purse strings.

  41. A-House July 1, 2015 7:48 am

while I wish the Legislature will create a separate line item for Title IX and travel subsidy it ain’t going to happen as long as the mind set is UH wanted “autonomy” and it’s their kuliana

perhaps the “root cause” is upper campus unwillingness to separate these 2 from the UHAD budget or dictate to the UHAD to set aside $$ for these 2 items then reallocate remaining funds to rest of program

perhaps another authoritative source is the BOR dictating to UH President that they want to see Title IX and travel funds indicated as “special” line items in the over-all budget; not part of the UHAD budget to honor the late Patsy Mink and upper campus decision to accept paying the travel expense to join the MWC and BWC – makes sense to me, but who am I???
