The Blaze debate

Whether linebacker Blaze Soares is eligible to play in 2010 depends on the rule interpretation for the year he spent after his high school graduation.
Because he did not meet all of the eligibility requirements for an incoming freshman, he attended a school that does not offer football during the 2005-2006 academic year. He then enrolled at UH-Manoa in August 2006.
The NCAA allows each player five years to play four seasons.
At issue is when Soares’ eligibility clock started. One argument is that because he attended a non-football-playing school, his eligibility clock did not start until he enrolled at UH-Manoa in 2006. The opposing argument is that he needed to attend the other school to be eligible at UH-Manoa, so his clock should start at 2005.
In any scenario, Soares will be allowed to play next season.
But the Warriors would love to have Soares available for 2010, when they play USC and, possibly, SMU.

* * *

Remember Gabe Tuata? He committed to UH in February 2007 with the intent of grayshirting in 2007 and joining the Warriors in January 2008. But he did not meet all of the NCAA requirements, and opted to go the junior-college route. Tuata had a fairly good start at Mount San Antonio College this year, and he is, as they say in the business, a person of interest for the Warriors.

Happy birthday to the Jaegermeister — Lyn Eastman. She’s always gorgeous, always fun. We raise a toast to her. Bomb’s away!

    Good Morning ST…

Gabe Tuata – Would be nice to have him back and in a Warrior uniform. He was the next coming of Chad Owens and I’m sure he would be a huge boost to our special teams and running back position!

Blaze Soares – What an unfortunate situation for such a talented player. I pray that if he only has next year to play that he can stay healthy and prove to everyone that he should be the most feared linebacker in the nation! I know having him healthy all season will have offensive coordinators she-she pants when they play us!

Good Morning Tsaikoland! Hope everyone has a great day today!

  6. Pauoa Boy November 10, 2008 7:44 am

    Again…

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARINES!!!

If you see a Marine today, please tell them Happy Birthday as this year marks the 233rd year!

On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress resolved to raise two battalions of “American Marines.” Congress commissioned 31 year old Samuel Nicholas, a well-known Philadelphian, as captain of the fledgling force of Continental Marines. Nicholas raised two battalions of Marines and began the long, illustrious history of the United States Marine Corps.

On November 1, 1921, General John A. Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No.47, Series 1921. The order provided a summary of the history, mission, and traditions of the Corps. General Lejeune directed that the order be read to every command each subsequent year on November 10th in honor of the founding of the Marine Corps. This tradition has continued every year since 1921 throughout the Corps.

The first official “Birthday Ball” was probably held in 1925 in Philadelphia. No official records of the event were held prior to that date. Guests at the ball in 1925 included the Secretary of the Navy, General Lejeune, well-known national leaders, and representatives from all the military services.

On October 28, 1952, Commandant General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. directed the celebration of the Marine Corps Birthday be formalized throughout the Corps. The details were included in the Marine Corps Drill Manual approved in 1956. General Shepherd’s order helped bring together the inclusion of a cake ceremony and other traditions still held every year at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

    Coaches,
Please come down to my area on your recruiting trip. You already have the information on the prospect RB from my area, but there are many quality D1 prospects over here. There is another RB prospect in the same league as my boy that is getting recognized by the big name schools very quickly, but has been flying under the radar. Make sure your Southern California trip to Long Beach Poly and Los Angeles area, heads south on the I-5 to the San Diego area I guarantee it’ll be worth it!

    takoboy,

No doubt they need to get those 2 LBP boys back on the Warrior Team. Silverado DE Graham is a lost cause as he already committed to UCLA. Frikkin Norm Chow already has a solid class going so far with Hasiak and Hilliard commiting already for his offense. As much as I myslelf wanted to go to UCLA, I’m beginning to have a grudge against them, don’t know why?

  30. Garret November 10, 2008 8:35 am

This article is about the code talkers being honored during the UH-NMSU game…I just wish the writer would get UH’s name correct.

New Mexico State University’s Veterans Day Weekend would not be complete unless the Navajo Code Talkers and Mescalero Apache Vietnam war veterans walked onto the field and did justice to the day’s theme: “Salute to American Heroes.”

“I’m having a good time,” said Keith Little, Navajo World War II veteran Code Talker.

He represents what soldiers endured in WWII, he said. Being away from home and the fear a soldier endured were just some of the obstacles that he overcame in the 1940s. To be honored and recognized gives him a great sense of pride, he said.

Donned in Navajo attire — purple velvet shirt and matching skirt — Begay cheered on the Aggies as Hawaii State beat them, 42-30.

In consideration of the good deeds you have accomplished for the women of Hawaii, a Tsaiko Executive washroom key will be issued to you as soon as the City Planning Commish approves our Ching/Tsaiko Field Club House extension.

Except … now I feel bad for jm because … I think I may have been the original instigator of after-hours mayhem in the Tsaiko clubhouse. So … please, here is my vote for restoring jm’s full Tsaiko privileges and consideration again. Pleez? 😀

  32. Stephen Tsai November 10, 2008 8:36 am

  34. Esme November 10, 2008 8:36 am

Garret … “Hawaii State”? Good grief!

Well, at least the inferred that Hawaii IS a state, which is more than I can say about some other writers and politicians. Ugh.

  35. Stephen Tsai November 10, 2008 8:37 am

Well, Esme, have you recovered yet from Gridiron?

  36. Garret November 10, 2008 8:37 am

Article in the Advertiser mentions that organizers hope that Obama and Colt will attend the Hawaii Inaugural Ball.

Tickets have sold out for the 2009 Hawai’i Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C., in honor of President-elect Barack Obama, and organizers are working hard to get assurances that Obama himself will attend.

The Hawai’i State Society also has invited former University of Hawai’i quarterback Colt Brennan, who now plays for the Washington Redskins, and Kaua’i-born retired Army Gen. Eric Shinseki, among other notable people with Hawai’i connections.

Almost immediately after Obama’s election victory Tuesday, Mossman’s voice mail began filling up with requests for what remained of the nearly 750 tickets to the ball, which cost $200 apiece.

On Friday, he even had to turn away offers of $10,000 sponsorships because he cannot provide the eight ball tickets and the table that come with $10,000 donations.

“I never thought I’d be in a position where I am today, where someone says I want to give you $10,000 but I have to say, ‘I’m sorry, we can’t take it,'” he said. “It kills me when I have to turn people away because we don’t have any more tickets.”

I hope that the coaches are having very productive meetings today. These relationships are the key to current and future recruiting.

  42. Garret November 10, 2008 8:40 am

Blaze’s issue is very interesting, and I don’t know if there are many precedents available for UH to argue their case. It would be great to have him be available for 2009 and 2010. More importantly, it would be great to have a healthy Blaze for at least one full season.

  43. Garret November 10, 2008 8:41 am

I really want Gabe Tuata to join the Warriors! Hopefully he’ll want to go home to Hawaii and ignores the recruiting attention he’ll get from other schools. Isn’t BSU interested in him?

  44. Pauoa Boy November 10, 2008 8:42 am

    madeinhawaii,

Fa’alafua is huge, get planny Hawaii guys on that team I heard! 6’7″ 380lbs. wonder if he can move…sheesh!

  45. Garret November 10, 2008 8:42 am

    Article on the Warriors.

“We finally put some points on the board, especially after last week we had to work on some red zone stuff and there’s still some things that we need to clean up. We had a couple of lost down situations when we weren’t on the same page, but overall we got a lot better and we still have some work to do,” Greg Alexander said.

“It was just an excellent win for us, because they were playing for the same thing that we were, we’re both playing to go to bowl games, and that’s why it was so competitive, especially away from home,” Coach Greg McMackin said.

  46. Stephen Tsai November 10, 2008 8:42 am

I think Blaze’s case is worth studying because there is at least one other UH player who went the same route.

  47. Garret November 10, 2008 8:44 am

Under Armour just extended their deal with Texas Tech to cover all of their teams. They had Texas Tech’s football team since 2006. “basketall”

Already in the midst of a five-year agreement – that began in 2006 — with the football team, Under Armour is to announce Monday in Lubbock that it will outfit all 17 of Texas Tech’s teams. The new five-year $11 million agreement includes uniforms, other apparel and shoes. The partnership with men’s basketall begins this season with the other relationships launching in July 2009.

The Baltimore-based company already has partnerships with the University of Maryland, Auburn, University of South Florida, University of South Carolina, University of Hawaii and the University of Utah.

  48. Pauoa Boy November 10, 2008 8:44 am

    Garret,

I heard from a source that Gabe Tuata still wants to go to UH and be a Warrior. I hope it’s true! I always thought he would’ve took over where Chad Owens left off in the return game…

  49. Garret November 10, 2008 8:46 am

RGM’s team won their western semifinal playoff game. Unfortunately, RGM made a big drop in the game…good thing the team won, but bad thing for RGM since the scouts pay extra attention to playoff games.

Rookie Ryan Grice-Mullen is a tantalizing talent, but the wide receiver dropped a ball that hit him square in the bread basket and probably cost the Lions a touchdown.

  50. Loa November 10, 2008 8:47 am

Garret/Stephen – sounds like a good research project, i wonder if the NCAA publishes past results, maybe we can hire Will Hunting to argue the case

  51. Garret November 10, 2008 8:48 am

    Pauoa Boy,

I’ve read a lot of things that point to UH being able to get Gabe when he’s available to transfer. I hope that things continue like that, as I think Gabe will do very well this season and get all kinds of recruiting interest. I’m sure that the coaches will keep in contact with Gabe to make sure he knows how much he’s valued by the Warriors.

  52. Stephen Tsai November 10, 2008 8:48 am

As I understand it, Blaze’s route is available to every UH student.
The way it works, I was told, is that if you’re a high school senior, UH looks at your transcripts and SAT score. If you’re a community college student, UH looks at your high school and CC transcripts, as well as y our SAT. But if you transfer from a four-year school, UH only looks at that school’s transcripts.

  53. Stephen Tsai November 10, 2008 8:50 am

I went to the Mount SAC site and I noticed Tuata’s stats dramatically drop off. I wonder if he was hurt? It seems that way.

  54. Garret November 10, 2008 8:51 am

Another article on RGM’s team’s playoff win. If they win their next game they will be in the Grey Cup, Canada’s version of the Super Bowl. RGM’s team’s D gave up no TDs in their last game and got 7 turnovers! The next playoff game will be hard because they will be on the road and the team they are playing beat them all 3 times they played this season.

Receivers Ryan Grice-Mullen and O’Neil Wilson, however, dropped catchable balls near the Saskatchewan goal line and the Lions had to settle for the first of three Paul McCallum field goals.

  55. Stephen Tsai November 10, 2008 8:51 am

I have to run an errand. I’ll be back in a bit.

  56. Garret November 10, 2008 8:52 am

RGM’s drop was at the goal line in the first quarter…good thing his team’s D was so good and it didn’t matter in the game.

If O’Neil Wilson and Ryan Grice-Mullen don’t drop balls in one first quarter drive, the points off turnovers would have been enough to put this game away much earlier than they did.

  57. Esme November 10, 2008 8:55 am

ST … haha, define “recovered.” I suppose if you mean just being able to catch up with life, I guess that is slowly happening. However, that really great experience gave me the performing bug again. Heaven help us all!

P.S. While the Gridiron was great, it WAS missing one element … a lion …

  58. Esme November 10, 2008 8:56 am

Weird … the blog is posting about 20 minutes into the future again …

  59. Garret November 10, 2008 8:59 am

To go along with your Happy Birthday to the Marines, I think that these Pendleton-based Marines who were off duty at the time deserve recognition.

A half-dozen off-duty Marines who raced through a burning motel yesterday warning sleeping guests that it was on fire were hailed as lifesaving heroes.

Everyone escaped the Americas Best Value Inn motel, including one elderly man who required oxygen after he was carried to safety by one of the Marines. The cause of the fire, which ignited shortly before 8 a.m., was under investigation.

Marine Pvt. Colton Oliver said he and two colleagues were walking along a second-floor landing about 8 a.m. when they saw flames and smoke. They rousted their fellow Marines and all six began knocking on doors and windows of rooms, urging people to leave.

“Everybody was out by the time the firefighters got here,” Oliver said. “It’s what we’re trained to do.”

“No fire alarms were going off. The only thing we heard was Marines banging on our windows and telling us to get out.”

The Camp Pendleton-based Marines, who were on leave, also were staying at the motel.

“I’d call them absolute heroes,” said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Pardi.

  60. Stretch November 10, 2008 9:00 am

Scout Bowl again on Thursday. I hope that there are no major injuries like Bryce Kalau`oka`a`ea in the last Scout Bowl.

  61. Garret November 10, 2008 9:02 am

By the way, this fire was near the 5 freeway and we saw the flames yesterday as we drove to Disneyland. The entire building was on fire and the plume of smoke was HUGE and localized in that small area. As we drove by we saw the first firefighter engine get there…the way the fire was at that time, if the Marines didn’t get everybody out the people in the hotel would have died.

  62. Esme November 10, 2008 9:06 am

Wow, the Marine posts are giving me chicken skin. Amen … and mahalo to the Marines and the fine men and women serving our country.

  63. Esme November 10, 2008 9:08 am

    Loa, no worries.

    But it’ll cost you $17. 😆

  64. Buffoman November 10, 2008 9:09 am

    Old stuff..

Thanks Pauoa Boy, I thought I was the only one noticing that we are still having our problems with the dbs inability to cover.

I really like the Warriors but part of what we do as fans is to question things that appear to repeatly have a negative effect on the overall success of the team going forward.

Lastly, doe the WAC commissioner have free rein to do what has bee chatted about or does he have a specific mandate from the WAC presidents? It appears that commisioners act at the whim of the schools and that presidents have a wide sway over how business is done (remember the defection). Maybe it’s not Karl not being aggressive but the presidents not choosing to be more proactive.

Good morning gang…again have to do an Esme today….

ST, just a question. How does it work for those guys like Ikaika-Alama Francis or others who have gone to UH or another 4 year school and played in another sport? I mean, they were at UH and played V-ball or B-ball for 4 years and than decided to continue their education and wanted to play football? I’ve also heard stories of older guys (i.e. late 20s early 30s) who already had a degree and went back for their graduate degrees who walked on to the football team and actually played. Not sure how long they played (i.e. 2 years/4 years) but its happened. How does it work for them???

    Okay…whoosh and out…talk later.

  69. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 10, 2008 9:35 am

    Aloha Kakou:

Just a very quick post as I have to go deal with bureaucrats public and private. Universal Healthcare sounds really good right about now.

DrDoc is scheduled for surgery this afternoon to become a Tsaiko Bionic Man. He’s having a combo pacemaker and defibrillator implanted later on today. Still no word on when he’ll be released from the hospital.

To repeat a much earlier post: We will definitely need some help in getting our lives back on track. There’s some stuff I cannot do because of physical limitations – too short, for example – and a lot more because I don’t know how to, but I think I am capable of learning new skills which someone will have to show me how to do.Will be sending out an e-mail later on today or first thing tomorrow.

Am looking forward to the upcoming basketball tourney on Nov 14 and 16.

Is anyone here planning to attend the 11 pm game with Idaho State on Monday, Nov 17? I realize that it’s a national ESPN promotion so someone had to get stuck with that time slot, but why UH?

Have a good day everyone. I will probably see some of you folks at the Na Koa luncheon – assuming that I get through by then.

Prayers to my 12-year old son. He broke his clavicle this past weeekend during his football game in Portland, Oregon. Kea was having a great season scoring 14 touchdowns and leading his team to the championship game. He played qb, rb, lb and s.

Anyone has any insight on this type of injury and the healing process? (HeinekenHealer, bulla, d1, homey, j(j), koakane, Pride, et al?).

    http://voices.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2008/11/reed_doughty_just_got_paid_aga.html

“Sometimes a number gives you an identity,” Colt Brennan said into my lucky recorder. “When you played good in a certain number, you just feel a certain way. It’s just a subconscious thing, I guess. I always try to figure out if my time ever comes, am I gonna go back to 15 or am I gonna stay with 5, because I’ve had success with 5. Maybe 5’s my NFL number. Maybe 15 was only supposed to be my college number.”

Hi Rob25! Yah, i know. I miss everyone. Guarantee the next tgate. Wish i could’ve been there this past Saturday…..sounded like a blast!

  78. koakane™ November 10, 2008 10:26 am

morning tsaiko kanes and wahines kind of overcast but still being in Hawaii nei is better than most places.

finally getting over the great time at BV last saturday. very similar to cmac rule of 48 hours to recover. mahalo for all the kudos but no biggie just being with you guys, seeing everyone having fun, share great conversations, eating away and making memories is mahalo’s enough. my personal thanks goes out to Kekoa with dem prizes (shaka patnah), diana and betty for the hard work trying to get the info so the prizes are given out in time, some funnies to share about this two; diana-eh koakane what is int. me-oh when somebody catches the ball from the other teams qb. diana-ok and how many times he gotta do that to get one int. betty hearing the shouting “fumble” “fumble” starts yelling “fumble” then turns to diana and says what is fumble? priceless.

finally to all who attended you are the greatest, for those who couldn’t make it at this time just letting you know Kekoa and I are still scheming and planning. more to come in da nea fucha so now worry beef curry.

wow getting stink eyes from my boss so back to make like paying attention to meeting.

  79. LizKauai [Believer] November 10, 2008 10:27 am

Hawaiianbod- my daughter broke her clavicle by falling off a slide when she was 2. We used La’au Lapa’au – Hawaiian medicine – and she was good to go in 2 weeks. MD’s were shocked that the xrays showed no sign of the break.

Prayers are VERY GOOD- and keeping the arm on the broken side immobilized and dry for a few days.
HeinekinHealer would be a good one to exchange some email with.

  80. Calvin from Kona November 10, 2008 10:31 am

anyone going to the UH Basketball game on Friday?

  81. Kekoa November 10, 2008 10:33 am

Rob25 ~ You are most welcome!…btw…Does your hubby play golf? If you keep at it, you could team up with him and challenge A-Joe & A-Sports in a little Golf match when he returns! Just let Homey “play thru” if he is behind your foursome.

Or do what my mom used to do if someone ‘pushed’ from behind. Just hit his ball back at him…Bwhahaha!!

  82. madeinhawaii November 10, 2008 10:39 am

    Hawaiianbod:,

Clavicals are tricky things. Is he wearing some kind of harness that pulls his shoulder back? Main thing is that you gotta make sure it aligns properly or it could lead to easy shoulder dislocation in the future. I know.. I broke my clavical 35 years ago and still pop my shoulders regularly. I broke mine into 5 pieces skidding off the road side on the way to pupukea heeiau at 2 am on a Honda Road and Trail bike so it took me 6 months to heal and another 6 for the ghost pains to sort of .. mostly … disappear. Your son’s in better shape than I was so it probably won’t take as long and with the right precautions, he’ll be as good as new.

I wish him well. He probably can’t really lift his arms up to even cheer the team on, eh? That must really be the pits for him. Tell him to learn the playbook study the defensive alignments.. contribute with knowledge and experiece until he’s better. Oh yeah… and raise is GPA.

Small kine decision ’08 to make this morning. The question is, “should I allow a certain miscreant to operate under the radar?” I feel like without the proper discipline applied, this individual could upset the Guava cart.

  90. A-House November 10, 2008 11:03 am

    ST:

Based on the morning paper, it appears that UH coaches will NOT go to San Diego to check out Pauoa Boy’s neighbor across the street.

If that’s the case, UH could lose a very good running back; one who can compliment the “run ‘n shoot” as a true Freshman.

Or, did Tony Tuioti already make contact or “recruit” said absolutely NO to playing for the Warriors.

  91. jm2375 November 10, 2008 11:06 am

Can you comment on what school(s) John Manu-Olevao went to after Kahuku? Also how many years will he be eligible to play?

  93. madeinhawaii November 10, 2008 11:14 am

Liz… on that Colt watch number thing..

Maybe 15 was his college number.. 5 his NFL starting number.. but #1 is where we expect him to end up, eh?

  94. Kekoa November 10, 2008 11:14 am

A Veteran is a man that at one time during his military service wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America, for the amount up to and including his life. That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who still do not understand that.

    Happy Birthday *Leathernecks!*

  95. al November 10, 2008 11:18 am

happy birthday to our U.S. Marine Corps!!!!

    oooorahh!

by tradition tonight should be the annual marine corps ball. years ago i remember staging the largest marine corps ball ever at mcbh a.k.a kbay. i believe nearly 2,000 marines and their dates attended.

talk about prime rib by the 100’s of pounds!

  96. al November 10, 2008 11:19 am

    bigwave dave………..how you been man?

i wondered about manu-olevao myself. i thought that he wouldn’t be able to come out until 2010?

  97. al November 10, 2008 11:23 am

bigwave……..wasn’t it first reported that he attended hpu, however, he surfaces at fresno cc as a freshmen tackle. i don’t he qualified out of hs thus his circuitous route. therefore, he would need an AA degree out of junior college to transfer which typically means that he would only have 2 years to play.

  98. delbull November 10, 2008 11:25 am

OKay…I will be at the “call the coach show” tomorrow. If Heinekens are still $1, I’ll buy the first round…hahaha…

  104. Kazz November 10, 2008 11:38 am

    RE: Call The Coach

Watching the Coach Mack show last night I did get the impression that Coach Mack would not be here in time for the Call The Coach Show on Tuesday, BUT at the same time I didn’t hear who would be filling in for him. I would like to think Coach Miano plays a big part in recruiting as well.

However I did call The Willows and they do have Call The Coach scheduled for this Tuesday at 6pm as usual.

Maybe we can have the Coach Potato Coaches fill in and we can stop by Times or Foodland for some tomatoes, onions, and eggs and have a good ole’ fashioned lynching this Tuesday in the back parking lot of The Willows. 😈

  105. Kekoa November 10, 2008 11:39 am

Awesome day this past Saturday! Thanks kekoa and kokane for giving a few individuals the avenue to come together and enjoy the 5 f’s. Thank you to the ladies on a certain table for putting up with me. Thank you waitress with the oriental blue eyes. Thank you BG, Ralph, and Hiflyer for “watching” my beer…suckas! Thank you BV cooks for the good food! Thank you cookie scroungers for eating all the cookies…grrrrrrr. Thank you A-Joe for telling me the rules of the driving range.

It was good to float in the ocean yesterday to recuperate from an exhausting Saturday. When the body hurts, go float in the ocean. Golf is a draining experience so I will now go into golf retirement again.

I see Rob25 and A-Sports want to try another new sport. May I suggest long boarding? Maybe SteveM and al will join us too.

Look forward to next next weeks t-gate!

Everyone have an extremely nice day and don’t forget to pick up your Hawaii State quarters!

    Soares and Tuata > Eligibility
Sure would be nice to have this resolved if not for these boys sake.
This would relieve their un-necessary stress so they can concentrate on more important things – football.
But then again there is not much anyone can do because the decision is solely left to the NCAA (another powerful entity).

  110. Garret November 10, 2008 12:06 pm

Shane Victorino had a well-deserved victory celebration in Vegas with friends and family over the weekend.

Outfielder Shane Victorino, a spark plug in the Philadelphia Phillies’ postseason run, hosting a World Series championship party for his family and friends on Sunday in the VIP bowling suite inside Red Rock Lanes at Red Rock Resort. Among his friends joining him was Reed Johnson of the Chicago Cubs. Victorino lives in Las Vegas in the off-season.

  111. Garret November 10, 2008 12:10 pm

ESPN’s Todd McShay has already labeled Texas Tech’s QB Graham Harrell a “system QB” and has him at #6 for QBs in the upcoming draft. Harrell has put up amazing numbers, leads the #1 team in the country…but is a system QB. Listed at slightly over 6’2″ and 199 pounds, he’s not too small or anything…

McShay currently has him behind the following: Bradford, Stafford, Mark Sanchez, KSU’s Josh Freeman and Louisville’s Hunter Cantwell. (Colt McCoy didn’t even make the Top 10.) Does everyone still think Harrell’s just a system QB? If this garbage keeps up, we’re going to have to pull for Harrell the way we did for Colt Brennan.

the babooze of the year to date as far as espn football draft experts has got to go to mel kiper, bruddah had curtis painter senior qb at purdue as the #10 overall senior prospect coming into the season, guy ain’t even starting no more, what a joke. i’ll believe my own eyes and practically any other unbiased fan, maybe even some biased ones perspective on things like this over the overpaid “experts” at espn.

    Al,
I heard unconfirmed reports that JMO may have attended a CC on Oahu or West Oahu College. If so this is not good because they are part of the University of Hawaii System, thus his clock would have started then.
If he is at FCC then he could have 2 to play 1
If he went straight to FCC he could have 2 (or 3) to play 2

Again it was unconfirmed so I figured on consulting the guru…

  123. d1島 November 10, 2008 12:28 pm

HA! I don’t have to read his lips, he probably was saying the same thing I was thinking! However when I got to watch the replay to see what he was challenging I just plain didn’t see why he wanted to challenge that call regarding the spot of the ball considering the circumstances.

although we may choose to meander off subject every now and then, i can’t believe you’d get that upset over it. somehow, by the end of the day, everything comes pono, and it is complete. like life, it never goes as we expect it to, but we do end up somewhere down the road…..together of course.

you should make an effort to attend one of the Tsaiko events if your schedule permits, then you would meet the ‘characters’ on this site. if your schedule does not permit that, no worry beef curry as we say.

wishing you only the best, and just for your information, if I want to wish my wife a Happy Birthday, i don’t see what consequence it is to you. may someone enjoy your company enough to wish you a happy birthday when it comes around.

someone once said, ‘….sometimes i can see the face of my enemy right in front of me, that’s why i don’t look in the mirror…’ may your week get better.

i didn’t want to get smu’d by talking about another publication’s story.

Didn’t JJ recruit Gabe Tuata for slotback? Would be nice to see him and Kealoha Pilares as slots one day…

  163. Sledge696 November 10, 2008 1:17 pm

Mahalo Liz. I am a staunch supporter of the UH football team BUT I type, or try to anyway, to be realistic and truthful and “tell it like it is” and the way I see it. I’m usually the one who says what everyone thinks but doesn’t have the “B” to say it. So…

  164. Calvin from Kona November 10, 2008 1:18 pm

    I guess we lost sledge.

Come on Sledge, don’t take your ball and go home. We accept all kinds here. Just unlike many other blogs where cowards try to cyber-bully people and hide their 90 lb body behind a laptop while insulting most everyone, we blog with class here. If you join us you’ll see that we respect different opinions but also show respect to people and communicate in a professional manner (mostly). It is because of this mutual respect that we have come to meet each other and form friendships. If you were our friend, wouldn’t you want us to wish you a happy birthday?

Having said that…yes, sometimes this blogs goes off topic a bit. Maybe you can remind us to come back to it by posting open ended comments related to the topic?

  167. BillB November 10, 2008 1:25 pm

Pomai, Kelly should be able to self correct by watching tape. I picked up on what I saw just seeing the game on TV with no real benefit of replay. He can just look at film in slow motion over & over to see what happened, it was pretty obvious. Kelly is not consistent with his mechanics and that is the main cause when things go wrong.

At the games I always watch his kick offs, extra points and field goals. Usually can tell if it’s going to be favorable or not just by looking at his plant foot, approach, lean and follow through.

In his defense it is a lot easier to kick & control a soccer ball than a football due to the egg/pointed shape, plus 1 ton of mad guys trying to get you.

  168. homey ⑤ November 10, 2008 1:27 pm

Sledge696 – For me, you are always welcome here. Feel free to express your opinions. No worry if someone disagrees. We can all agree to disagree and in the end it’s still all good.

Main thing is to support UH Athletics and especially the Warriors!

    GO WARRIORS

Oh, and no forget, come join is at the t-gate.

the 5 f’s rule has been acknowledged here for a couple of years now.

    football
    food
    family
    fun
    friends

the relationships that you see here all evolved first from our mutual admiration of the warrior football team.

when things got slow, what else was there to talk about food of course. especially since we experienced cattle calls, parties, and tailgates together, all of which ended up with the partaking of food.

as local boys and gals gathered here on this blog as well as making actual physical encounters like the aforementioned, we, like the “hawaiians” that we are, all became family and were willing to discuss family matters as well. in fact, we bring our family to tailgates and the like.

naturally, we all began to enjoy what we did here on the warrior beat so much we labeled ourselves as tsaiko’s. the tsaiko’s name have become so well known throughout the sports media and warrior athletic department. in fact, reaching some legislative members and university administrators as well. we just have a lot of fun here.

so all of this has resulted in us becoming very good friends. that to me is what is great about this place. we friends come from all walks of life, ethnicity, race, religion, and locations. we have no problem accepting new friends all the time. just play like us and we all become friends.

join us at the next tailgate. 40-50 of us will gather. we will talk football, eat a lot of food, bring our family (oh, and we act like one big family), we certainly have a lot of fun, and in the end you will leave with a lot of new friends.

here’s a link to stevem’s tsaiko home page. you’ll find tailgate info here.

no shame. if you forgive us, we’ll forgive you.

    …nuff said.

  170. Kazz November 10, 2008 1:30 pm

There is at least one other place on the net people can go to to express their “different” opinions about UH athletics with the hopes of stirring emotions to further feed their psychological deficiencies in wanting to either be right all the time or to just vent because you lost a lot of money in past weeks.

The fact that people who come here and argue that their opinions are not welcome is nothing but a result of their opinions being responded to in a manner in which said individual does not agree with themselves. This is the problem, person A comes on a public forum and states something opposite of the trend. The other people give their opinions on person A’s comments and since the personality of the forum has been previously established person A will have multiple people responding differently and person A can do two things: 1) take it with an open mind and continue to disagree in a civil manner or 2) do it the way most people seem to prefer and that is to respond with nothing but accusations and assumptions followed by insults to people they have never met.

Again, there is at least one other place where reaction #2 is welcomed.

    Mahalo bulla,
I have fulfilled my goal. The whole purpose of my blogs is to:
Insight emotion – most being negative to what I type.
To inject that adrenaline into your system. Get your juices flowing fast.
To active some kind of response whether it be positive or negative.
To upset the cart and steady easy-going flow.
To be that Devil’s Advocate. A lot of time we forget that there is two sides to every story, thing, situation and both sides must be viewed and known.
So…just for you to respond to me is great and a plus for this arena.

  172. homey ⑤ November 10, 2008 1:32 pm

BillB – I was waiting for Kelly to kick the ball out of the endzone.

  173. LizKauai [Believer] November 10, 2008 1:36 pm

Sledge696- ok…thanks for responding. Please do hang around long enough to understand that this blog is an OPEN DOOR to all Warrior fans. It is not an “in crowd” thing at all – and new Tsai-kos are always welcome.

If the lingo is hard to understand, just say- “I can’t figure out what you are talking about” and someone will translate.

Unlike most blogs, we have gone beyond anonymous posting and gotten together in the real world for tailgates and away-games and met each other (and many, many lurkers) and become friends. We even have friends among other team fans – just because we spread aloha and have fun in support of the Warriors.

There are lots of knowledgeable people here who know a LOT about football. Most of the time, we read the topics, nod or shake our heads, and then visit with each other.

In the long run, the diversity of people who have come together here has really come to be appreciated- some are math wizards, gourmet chefs, rocket scientists, housewives, service people in hostile lands, students, rock stars, attorneys, you name it, we got it.

When a need arises, we will jump in to find a solution – whether in cyber space or on the pavement. All are welcome to participate… and enjoy the “F’s” – Friends, food, fun, family, fishing, and oh yeah- FOOTBALL!

kelly was kicking the ball out of the endzone at florida, which is even harder to do. sealevel, with all that humidity.
the UF fans that we sat amongst couldn’t believe he could do that. they were really impressed and wanted to trade their kicker for Dan. they couldn’t remember the last time a UF kicker did that, and these gentlemen were on the older side.

The highlighted statement above is a KEY issue as to why many feel the way they do.

We have been accused of “drinking Kool-Aid” or being foolish by being positive.

The fact that people believe that “the way THEY see it” is “telling it like it is” ensinuates that their opinion is the ONLY one worthy of attention and no one else.

The so called “Kool-Aid” drinkers that always feel that the team isn’t as bad as they appear are stating their beliefs and we are NOT saying that “no the team is awesome and we SHOULD be 13-0” this season, but we simply go on our faith and also what many of us see at practices, Na Koa luncheons, and for some, their own experiences within the sport of football. Again the difference is while both sides may have the same experiences to make their opinions, one side firmly thinks they are right no matter what in a more hostile way.

There is a difference between the two kinds of bloggers that have emerged since we’ve had some struggles this season.

So what if we go off topic it always comes back to Warrior Football. Besides anybody get there own opinion and can say whatevas. If I like say Happy Birthday to my fellow Marines, I can, you no need bother just ignore. Besides there are some former Marines who have played Warrior Football and a former Marine who still is in…Alonzo Chopp! Remember DT Lui Fuga, he’s a Marine too. Amon Tong…Marine! 186. Southbay November 10, 2008 1:51 pm

Stephen … I don’t know if you addressed this but are you implying/saying that Blaze is medical redshirting this season.

    2005 – HPU
    2006 – UH 1st year
    2007 – UH 2nd year
    2008 – Medical Redshirt
    2009 – UH 3rd year
    2010 – UH 4th year

The only way he can play in 2010 is if he medical redshirts this season and the HPU year is not counted as his 1st year. Is that correct?

Before, couldn’t beat the $3.95 mini katsu curry from L&L or Loco Moco drive-ins. The mini was larger than Zippy’s regular size.

Kelly does that weird body twist before he kicks. When he makes a big twist he makes it, when he makes a half ass twist, he misses.

That’s what I’ve been saying since last year! We were yelling that at the TV on Saturday (and by we, I mean the “Twins” and me). “Do the twisty thing!!” I say he doesn’t always make it if he does the twisty thing, but if he doesn’t do it, he misses. My thinking is that it allows him the time to slow down and not rush the kick. The rest of the team still needs to do their part to make sure that it isn’t blocked.

Bulla may be right about the plant foot. I don’t know why he seems to be hooking his kicks more frequently.

  222. chawan_cut November 10, 2008 2:26 pm

    homey,
yes, on august 30th, someone sneezed and the butterfly flinched and flapped its wings irregularly which caused a hurricane in the gulf which caused it to rain before the florida game causing the humidity levels to be all out of whack which altered the game day atmosphere and thus made the ball to spin awkwardly on the opening kickoff and nothing has been correct ever since.
although i think somewhere in the galaxies a star burst, causing cosmic radiation to travel light years and finally hit the great town of las cruces, nm this past saturday. the ball started to spin back to normal out of the palm of #12 and things are on track to re-balance itself out. that will be the beginning of good things to come.
ok, i need to wake up now.

  223. Jason November 10, 2008 2:28 pm

Happy birthday to our Marines, and thank you all for your service.

Happy birthday to Lyn, the pride of Waipahu. Or is homey the pride of Waipahu. After all, I heard homey is the world record holder for most black dog adobo eaten in five minutes. 😉

Garret: Interesting link about Harrell. I’m not a big fan of his, and it’s a pretty weak QB crop this year. With the underclassmen, I like Stafford and I like Bradford (although I still think he’s a year away). McCoy is so-so, but I like him a little bit more than Harrell. There are some good guys at the smaller schools, I’d like to see more from them too. We’ll see how it plays out.

    * * *

We had a great Nā Koa lunch today. sj-macro, myki, WassupDoc, and I were at our table. Coach Ron Lee was the guest speaker today. He talked exclusively about the offense, breaking down the game film from a couple drives (the first two?) to show us how the offense is growing, and what problems they are still facing. I’m not going to go into details, cause uhwarriors usually posts great recaps on the Nā Koa Web site. But to all the haters, those that think Ron Lee should be fired, who are critical of him — you need to sit down and listen to this guy talk. He knows the run and shoot as well as anyone. Watching him break down the film, you really start to see how it’s a bunch of little things that screw up plays and drives. That’s something I learned while watching Coach Aranda break down film, and it’s something that Ron really emphasized today.

  225. homey ⑤ November 10, 2008 2:34 pm

Rob25 – So you are saying that Kelly needs to go back to his pre-kick ritual. Somewhat similar to A-Joe before he hits the golf ball…shake the booty, waggle his club, take a deep breath, exhale, loosen the shoulders, turn the head slightly, re-grip the club, look at the target…JUST HIT THE DAMN BALL ALREADY!!!!

  226. Jason November 10, 2008 2:36 pm

Not everyone has the same natural talent that you have, Tiger. Me, I think I got the ball to fly about 10 yards.

  227. Jason November 10, 2008 2:37 pm

Oh yeah, as for Blaze: I tried researching this very topic a few weeks ago, and I gave up. I don’t get partial qualifiers …

  228. Rob25 November 10, 2008 2:38 pm

Yeah or he can go Happy Gilmore like your golfing and pray for the best!

He just needs to loosen the body and kick away!

    Gotta go docs…see ya later.

  229. homey ⑤ November 10, 2008 2:39 pm

Jason – I like Harrell because he gets the job done. It seems he can zip the ball when needed and put finesse on it too. His release is quick and he thrives in that offense. One big thing he has going for him is that he has time to go through his reads and he has quick recognition of the defensive formations.

  230. J-Dog November 10, 2008 2:40 pm

    re: Dan Kelly twisty thingy

I just got a good idea to make a Dan Kelly video compilation of his pre-snap “twist” to the tune of “the twist”.

Happy Birthday Bulla’s main bomber Lyn!!

Please drop a bomb and have a great time on your special day!!

  232. Rob25 November 10, 2008 2:42 pm

    J-Dog

I can see it now…let’s twist again like we did last season….

OK, I’m not old enough to remember that song, but somehow it popped into my head.

See, now you know why I gotta go docs.

  233. J-Dog November 10, 2008 2:44 pm

Does coach Mack still make the players run sprints in the middle of practice? Or was that just a fall camp thing?

  234. homey ⑤ November 10, 2008 2:45 pm

J-Dog, Rob25, chawan, Stretch, sj/myki, Loa, curveball, et al – do any of you recall Kelly going through a routine when he is at the practice field or during warm-ups at games (before he kicks)?

  235. Mei Ling November 10, 2008 2:47 pm

    Happy birthday, Lyn!!!

Hope you had a good time in Flagstaff. My hula brahda told me it just snowed in Flagstaff yesterday. Winter has come to the northland.

  236. Rob25 November 10, 2008 2:53 pm

homey…when I went to practices…I rarely got to see him kick. On one of the Saturday practices…he was kicking with Symonds and I don’t recall him doing the twisty thing, but it could be more of a psychological thing to slow his approach and get loose. On the other hand, I could be totally missing something…I’m not a football player or kicker, just my insight on what I’ve seen over the last couple of years.

I mean I remember Milne had what seemed like a negative punt at UNLV a few years back. I wasn’t very fond of him, but he turned out to be okay.

  237. Rob25 November 10, 2008 2:54 pm

OK for real, I am leaving for the doctor’s now.

  238. Jason November 10, 2008 2:56 pm

homey: I will give Harrell this — he’s the best prospect Texas Tech has had under Leach. Same as how Colt was the only real legit prospect under June Jones. The game against Oklahoma will be a big chance for him to change my mind.

Now, I certainly wouldn’t mind if the 49ers drafted Harrell. He’s better than anyone we have now, and his skills would fit with what Mike Martz would want to do. Then again, I’d rather the 49ers trade for some guy with the Redskins. 😀

  239. homey ⑤ November 10, 2008 3:04 pm

Jason – Yes, Oklahoma will be a another test for Harrell. He looks to be in a groove right now and we’ll see if it continues. One thing for sure is that Leach is very marketable right now.

  240. Pauoa Boy November 10, 2008 3:05 pm

  243. Pauoa Boy November 10, 2008 3:16 pm

    Jason,

Thanks for the update from the Luncheon…regardless of Coach Ron and his knowledge of the offense, sometimes the play-calling got me shaking my head during games. Obviously it’s the players who gotta execute regardless but sometimes I feel they need to be put in better positions to get the first down or score. I think Coach Ron hasn’t fully opened up the arsenal yet and it may be because of the players not executing or still unable to grasp there assignments so it is second nature. Right now I feel the players are still thinking rather than just doing, which may be hampering the offensive progress forward. Not entirely the players fault though as Oline injuries, QB changes, etc…have made it difficult for the offense to have some consistency and continuity. Now that Alexander is set, AhSoon is back, I think these last couple of games will see our offense move the ball like they know how!

Also, I think the best pro prospect out of Texas Tech under Leach will be Michael Crabtree not Harrell. 🙂

  244. BigWave96744 November 10, 2008 3:18 pm

    Hey Mrs. Bulla
    Happy Birthday!!!

  246. Ronnie November 10, 2008 3:22 pm

Thanks Kazz and d1. I thought it was him. I heard that there were a couple of UH coaches at a school in Orange County today. It was kind of cool.

d1 – Yes, I did see the playoff schedule. Thank you for posting it.

  247. Calvin from Kona November 10, 2008 3:22 pm

    Let’s twist baby!

    Mr. Kelly…are you reading?

  248. Pauoa Boy November 10, 2008 3:22 pm

    Jason,

I wish Colt would have gotten drafted by the 49ers. He probably would have gotten thrown into the fire since Alex Smith is a scrub, JT O’Sullivan is…a scrub. Who knows though, I’m thinking he either might get traded or unseat Campbell next year, although Campbell has been somewhat surprising this year.

  249. Kazz November 10, 2008 3:23 pm

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MRS. BULLA!!!

  250. Mei Ling November 10, 2008 3:23 pm

    BillB,

Interesting analysis of what you’re seeing in Kelly’s mechanics & position when he kicks.

    Calvin from Kona,

(finally read thru the blog) I’m planning on going to the UH-USF men’s basketball game on Friday. Get to root for both teams since USF is my alma mater.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  252. d1島 November 10, 2008 3:25 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

Crabtree is a freak! Won’t be too long before he plays in Aloha Stadium in February!

btw, saw your list of Warrior Marines…any word on Ross Dickerson?

  253. Jason November 10, 2008 3:25 pm

Pauoa Boy: I think you said it perfectly, it’s not second-nature yet for the players. But as Coach Ron showed us today, they are starting to get it. I will say this — as a former WR coach, he was quick to point out things the receivers can do better. But for those clamoring for the backups to be put in, I also got the impression that they just aren’t ready for live play yet, even though they want to get more of a rotation in. I can understand the argument for getting those players game reps, but I can also understand keeping the starters in, especially because they are still growing and improving too. In the end, I think this will help us these last three games, as they will be better prepared to lead us as we try to make our run for the Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl.

And with respect to Crabtree, I was talking about QB prospects when I talked about Harrell. Of course, Crabtree is legit, the man is a beast.

  254. al November 10, 2008 3:26 pm

pboy…..i totally agree with you that we are heading on to the right track offensively.

we also finally employed the short passing game, that which freezes linebackers from being too overly zealous in their quest to sack the quarterback. i like the poise that alexander displays in the pocket.

  255. Kazz November 10, 2008 3:27 pm

    Pauoa Boy,

I ALMOST became a Marine out of high school, but alas the military life is not for me.

It was a Sgt. Batman (actually spelled BATTMAN I think) that tried to recruit me. So you can imagine how I felt when I answered the phone to someone calling himself “Sgt. Batman”.

  261. al November 10, 2008 3:35 pm

    kelly’s woes………….

i agree it is the position of his plant foot. to wit, he is stepping too “closed” and therefore, to compensate proper direction he is “swinging” to quickly to readjust the directional path of the football. thus, he is improperly “squared up” to the plane of the ball.

that “twist” is just a timing thing and that is pre-snap so it doesn’t factor in the results other than to settle him or as a timing thing.

(oh, and rob25, that song is too old for me too.)

  262. Ronnie November 10, 2008 3:35 pm

    Happy Birthday Lyn!!!

  263. d1島 November 10, 2008 3:36 pm

I liked that the offense spread it out in the Red Zone. Gotta avoid doing like Philly who got stuffed for trying to emulate a Smash Mouth offense. UH will keep getting better results by sticking with its base O.

  264. Pauoa Boy November 10, 2008 3:36 pm

    Kazz,

No worries the military life is not for everybody especially the Marines. They don’t call us The Few and The Proud for nothing. Regardless, though we all appreciate the support from all whether you served or not. My cousin just join the Army, so although I gave him some tuff love about it, it’s all good I guess haha.

    d1島,

Is Ross Dickerson’s middle initial T.???

  268. Jason November 10, 2008 3:47 pm

al: I like Alexander’s poise, too. Although Coach Ron showed us quite a few plays where Alexander is missing his man, not making the reads fast enough, stuff like that. So obviously, he has lots to improve on. Then again, he’s doing pretty fine right now as it is. I’d love to see him when he really feels comfortable doing everything at full speed.

I’m still a big fan of Rausch, but I gotta admit, the Greg Alexander we see now is way different from the one I saw in fall camp. Glad to see he caught up so fast, I wasn’t sure he’d be able to do it.

Pauoa Boy: Eh, no make trouble with me. I can divide by zero and destroy the universe, you know. 😛

homey: IDK, biostatistics is as real a field as computer science and civil engineering. I guess they do the same thing you and Stretch do, go “marketing.” 😛

  287. Jason November 10, 2008 4:16 pm

I guess that was an unsportsmanlike conduct on the 49ers, as we are backed up on this drive.

Travis LaBoy starting for the Cardinals, just made a tackle.

  295. Ronnie November 10, 2008 4:23 pm

So, do we all get the same commercials? I like that commercial for the Marines.

Because of the spinning rifles, it reminds me of when my brother was in the King’s guard and they did a performance with only the light of a street light for my grandfather’s birthday.

  296. Jason November 10, 2008 4:26 pm

We got that commercial too, Ronnie. Although they splice local commercials today. “Easy to use Island Pages!” Pfleuger Honda going on now. 😀

Jason, he may be… but when someone messes with my family, it takes me awhile to let it go… 😉

    Here’s a Navy commercial.

Aloha Tsaiko’s.. Getting on board a little late.
Master Tsai, doesn’t an athlete’s eligibility clock start with their “graduating class”? I’m confused on this one. Blaze didn’t enroll out of high school. Went HPU to build grades. Enroll 2006, so if one medical redshirt year is allowed then he should have two more to go. Maybe wishful thinking on my part. I hate to see him back for three games and lose the season. I’m thinking we’ll be able to watch him on Sunday’s one day.
HawaiianBod….Smoked out my clavical a few years back during a ride on the back road of Haleiwa, heading up to Pupukea for some trail riding.
Came up over a hill and the road was washed out. Front tire went into a rut and me wents head over the bars, did a 360 and landed on my neck and left shoulder. I thought seeing stars was only in the cartoons but let me tell you it was like watching the Fourth of July at Ala Moana park! Beautiful!
But anyhoo, my clavical was snapped and part of it was sticking out of the skin. Went to the ER, they put a splint on it and sent me to see the Dr. the next day. The Dr. was really proud of the scar he gave me after the operation but it went well. Today that clavical is stronger than the right side. Your boy going be ok. Takes some rehab to get the stiffness and range of motion back but no hurt. Not much nerves in that area. Good luck to your boy.

Nah, just kidding, that didn’t happen. It was a 43-yard run for Frank Gore. 😉

Hmmm I just realized one thing…

With our offense finding it’s groove and Idaho coming to town in two weeks I wonder if our cannon has it’s new ammo yet.

Last time there were a little more than a handful of shots left and I think they fired off 5 of them at the Nevada game…

(Leave it to me to worry about little things li dat…)

  305. Kaimuki Kid November 10, 2008 5:06 pm

By what I was told they had nine rounds left for the cannon before the Nevada game, if they fired off five that would leave four left, if they haven’t got anymore from the factory….

  306. Hoohiki November 10, 2008 5:10 pm

    PB,

Lived around the military all my life; don’t know any other. My dad was in the NAVY – Never Again Volunteer Yourself. All kidding aside…He started from the bottom and worked his way to the top. He is the proudest military man I know and he will do anything for his country and he will always be grateful and honored to have served. He’s retired now…He continues to be loyal and volunteers on base. I took him to see the Mighty Mo for the first time a few months back. The admiration on his face as he gazed at the ship was priceless and brought tears to my eyes….

  307. Ronnie November 10, 2008 5:15 pm

Yup. They ordered them through a local merchant and they have to ship them snail mail due to hazards shipping explosive material via air they were quoted about a month. I think the band ordered them about three weeks ago.

Sledge696 ~ Is that why you picked ‘Sledge’ for a blog handle?…So that you can wield it like one.

You’d be surprised at how much we Tsaiko’s have done to support UH football. How many Sports blogs can say they had a direct influence on getting the Hawaii Legislature to allocate $25 million towards UH Atheletics? We have an extentsive list of regular bloggers who can.

Who do you think got the work started on the Ching/Cooke field project? A couple of Tsaiko Lawyers and a Tsaiko Lobbyist, that’s who!

Can you name one thing you’ve done to advance the support of the Warriors outside of griping about offense/defense/special teams play?

We’ve had fund raisers or two along the way at our gatherings, and we plan to continue as time and circumstances permit. Some have had nothing to do with Warrior football. Some were just charity cases we thought were worthy of our support.

Shootz we get plenny people that can talk your ears off about football around here…but why confine it to jez dat?

Life happens all around us 24/7 and we all live it to the fullest. X’s and O’s can be interesting to some, great. They post – we choose to read it or not. Simple. Garret posts some really interesting stuff nearly everyday that is off topic but really riveting stuff…to some. Others are warned by him to scroll past if dey like.

Bottom line it’s your choice bull. You no like our free-wheeling association, go to anodda blog that caters to your needs. Don’t come ovah hea and try change ours! Especially if you nevah even show your face at one of our functions to Wala’au with us!

Hey! every day last week, I posted invitations to everybody that reads this blog to come out and join us at Bay View Golf Course. If you read the posts since, there is lots of positive feedback about how much fun it was. Next weekend (11/22) we T-gate as usual…come out, say your peace, we stand behind what’s said here. Step up or step out.

What?…Footbal can’t be fun? Gotta be all analytical? All Strategical?…Young players barely outta there teens have gotta be like Robots who nevah make mistakes? Coaches may never err. C’mon, Get real. How can you enjoy dissecting youngsters giving it their best shot and expect us to be dead serious about it too?!

Borderline trolls make me go crazy sometimes, sorry for the rant folks, I going soak my head in a bucket of red star now, and then go have dinner with Diana. Haaaah…Laterz!

My family is also full of retired, Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines. During lil kid days I played sports year round in the military leagues at K-Bay, Schofield, Hickam, etc… always good memories.

  315. (Jesse) James November 10, 2008 5:53 pm

    Kaimuki Kid…I was being sarcastic…LOL…

10 gauge eh? Hmmm…I wonder if my hunting friends would know…??? What about somebody from Young Guns???

  316. Jason November 10, 2008 6:01 pm

Hehe, I wonder if both offensive coordiantors have been watching UH football. That San Francisco run just now was similar to UH’s “Tampa.” And there was that shovel pass earlier in the game by Kurt Warner. 😛

  317. Kazz November 10, 2008 6:07 pm

    James and Kaimuki Kid,

Young Guns in Mapunapuna is the first place Chawan suggested so I called them and they knew what I was asking for but they didn’t have it nor is it in their catalog to order from.

I then called Magnum Firearms and they also do not carry those shells which are indeed 10-guage.

The guy at Magnum said that he was surprised the band has a cannon as he claims you need a Class 3 license to own and operate those signal cannons as they can fire a live shot.

I also called the Waikiki Gun Club and another place in town with no such luck. These things are hard to find on island.

There are few places online that people here suggested and I looked up “cannonmania.com” and they had 10-guage shells for a good price and they do ship to Hawaii, but a more detailed search into their practices led to some complaints with the Better Business Bureau so I stayed away from that, plus I kept calling during their local business hours to no answer and to no response left on their machine, plus the e-mail address on their website keeps returning with the “invalid address” message.

A few other sites online have the blanks but do not ship to Hawaii or Alaska…

The band ordered their ammo three weeks ago through a local company they dealt with in the past and now it’s just a matter of waiting for them to arrive. Also, I was told that the price for the shells they ordered were WAY cheaper than the stuff I found online considering the amount of shells in a box.

james, good point. we could just rely on the folks out in the parking lot with their stash of aerials. that was great to see last year. although they should’ve been smarter and light and run rather than keep lighting from the same spots.

If they were smarter (and funnier) they should set them off near the visiting team’s fans and then run away!!! 😆

Hmm…. FSU is coming here next year…. mwhahahahahahahaha!!!!

I didn’t stand in line, but since I already work at the bank the line was.. um…. how do you say…. “un-necessarily long”.

I dunno I guess since I don’t collect these things I don’t understand the madness. I understand the significance, but yeah…

I joked today that if JJ was on the state quarter the lines wouldn’t have been so long. To which my co-worker replied, that he’d be on IOUs instead, to which I replied that he’d be on about 200,000 – 400,000 of them! 😆

  324. Manoa November 10, 2008 6:30 pm

Hawaiian blood, not sure you got an answer, but my daughter broke her clavicle at 13, and I had a soccer player I coached break a clavicle at 17. The late Dr. Alan Richardson, great orthopedic surgeon treated both.

Basically, if you are going to break a bone, the clavicle may be the best bone to break is what Dr. Richardson said. In almost every case, it needs no bracing or strapping (old-time treatment no longer used). If you look at the Xrays, it is almost a miracle how it comes together, heals, and aligns itself. First you see the break and the clavicle out of alignment, then a lump of calcium forms to join the break like a lump of putty, then the bones align over time and the calcium lump shrinks down, and everything is fine.

Main thing for the patient is no play around, because when it is healing you don’t want to stick your arm out, fall on your shoulder, get playfully bumped, etc. You don’t want to rebreak it before it is fully healed. I recall almost full healing taking a little over 2 months, possibly less for partial healing, but for contact sports, you don’t want to take a chance. My daughter and the player I coached went back to playing as soon as the xrays showed healing.

    Good Evening Tsaikos and Tsaikettes!

First of all I want to wish a very Happy Birthday to Mrs. Lyn Bulla Bomber!

Also a Happy Birthday to The Marines!

For this past weekend (from which I am still recovering) I would like to thank our planners extraordinaire Kekoa and Koakane for an absolutely divine time fulla “Fs”. The prizes were great, food was delicious (how ’bout dem cookies?!), the service was good and the company was unsurpassed. The after activities were sooooo much fun. I think I had about two full buckets of fun. Yikes!

BG– Thanks for leading us in the cheers! Hope your lungs are okay.

Homes– Too bad about your beer problem. When you leave your beer unguarded at one end of the table while you, your ball and your beef stick go to the other end of the table to sweet talk the ladies…….yeah…..that’s what happens.
It was fun hitting balls with you, though. I have never seen anyone other than Happy himself do the Happy Gilmore as deftly as you did, especially with so little runway space. Next time, we’ll take it downstairs and crank dem woods. I tink we is in trouble wit the house behind da driving range. Shhhhh….

To the Twins, Mrs. Heineken Healer, Rob25 (or rather Rob44) and Jason– Hope you guys had fun hitting the balls. Ya did good!

I can’t wait for our next outing!

I hope Blaze heals up good. I REALLY want him to play again.

    Oh…and Brew– Go Niners!

Have a good evening everyone and Go Warriors!

Solomon Elimimian is 2nd in the country in solo tackles made and total tackles (including assisted ones).

Ryan Mouton and Adam Leonard are tied 11th in country in INT-TD ratio

Fo real… I just saw one of my co-workers with 5 rolls of them as they kept sending other people to buy them as the bank was limiting one per customer.

I asked them are they for other people? They said “no”. I asked them do you plan on selling them on ebay or something? They said “no”.

Unless it’s something functional, I don’t know why you’d need more than one of the same exact thing.

For example, how would other UH fans feel if you had five of the same Colt Brennan-signed helmets sitting at home and you’re not going to sell them??? 😆

Okay.. I got a football question for all you statistical geniuses out there.

On average, how many defensive plays and offensive plays did JJ have per game?

Is there a team average based on the new clock standards?

I’m just wondering how many calls are made so that we can tally the so called “bad” calls against the totality of the situation.

Although they fell short this past week, I feel like this comment is pretty reassuring about #2 son’s decision to play and study where he is.
It’s kind of a nice reminder about why you play football in the first place and why so many of us love the game. Sadly, the conduct of their opponent served as an example of just the opposite.

But when I say I was proud it was because of the way this group of young men carry themselves as football players and as people. In victory and in defeat Linfield plays with absolute dignity and respect for the game and themselves. The ‘Cats won’t celebrate by stomping on somebody else’s logo while turning towards and taunting the team they just defeated. The ‘Cats won’t stand 5 yards away from the other team’s sideline running smack while a big play is breaking 40-yards downfield. Our ‘Cats don’t stand around in pre-game talking junk to the other team warming up. The ‘Cats just strive to play Linfield football and that respect and character they play with now as young people will carry on in their lives after college and into their professional/adult lives.

Only in Hawaii….This is how the conversation probably went:

Bakery employee: “Hello, dis is Da Kine Bakery, how can I help you?”

Customer: “I would like to order a cake for a going away party this week.”

Bakery employee: “Wot you like on da cake?”

Customer: “Best wishes Susan” and underneath that ” We will miss you.”

End result when customer picks up the cake…

    Best Wishes Susan
    Under Neat that
    We will miss you

    🙂
