    First

  2. sjmacro March 15, 2010 9:57 am

Good A.M. Tsaikos. See some of you at the mini CC.

  3. ai-eee-soos March 15, 2010 9:58 am

    yep – this is a CRITICAL hire, for sure;

that is severely limited by the salary “cap”

  4. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2010 10:03 am

Well, there is flexibility to go above the cap, to $500,000, if necessary, but that’s not going to happen.

  5. bb March 15, 2010 10:12 am

So who is the 2? Are they meeting at the Batcave? Oahu is only so big….

  6. Stretch March 15, 2010 10:18 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Re: Salary Cap – if they go with $400,000, could the “boosters” put in matching money, similar to JJ’s contract, to boost the pay scale?? OR would $500,000 be max no matter where the money comes from??

  7. d1島 March 15, 2010 10:21 am

    HiFlyer,

Hope your Tspaghetti-stirring arm is feeling okay this morning. Great Job yesterday!

    Oh, btw…Top Ten!

  8. Ralph March 15, 2010 10:22 am

I hope the interviews include the question, “do you have any assistants in mind that you will ask to join your staff if hired, and secondly, will there be any carryover from the old staff.”

I personally hope the new hire cleans house, everyone goes, start fresh. If Johnson wants to transfer, let him, if Colemen doesn’t want to sign on without his recruiter to UH in place, fine, thanks anyway, UH is moving on and moving forward, not looking back.

  9. jm2375 March 15, 2010 10:23 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

    Top 10!

Must remember to *not* read the Comments section for articles. Most are a bunch of kneejerk reactors who have no idea what they’re talking about.

  10. Ralph March 15, 2010 10:25 am

Stretch your comment is a good one, but that is thinking out of the box, something that doesn’t happen very often at UH. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was JJ that got the boosters to ante up half the monies for his salary.

  11. al March 15, 2010 10:25 am

ralph…that would be a typically asked question during an interview as that is a very relevant matter.

  12. al March 15, 2010 10:26 am

i am sure that the entire team as well as the lone recruit will be evaluated and interviewed by the new coach. some returners will leave by their own accord and others may be asked to leave by the new coach.

  13. Jason March 15, 2010 10:26 am

HA Breaking News says the USC-UH game will be the only nationally broadcast game on ESPN this upcoming football season.

    http://tinyurl.com/yj7k3zf

  14. al March 15, 2010 10:27 am

my guess is that if smith is hired that ganot has a good chance of retaining his position.

  15. Ralph March 15, 2010 10:31 am

from the other thread, I posted that HA reports that UH will have only one game on ESPN, the USC game. Boise with 6 appearances. Mac has to get his team up to par and play better for UH to be rewarded with more TV appearances. SMU opens with Texas Tech on National TV and ESPN radio on Sept 5. Win and more people will come to the games, winning increases our chances that ESPN will pick up more regional telecasts of future games. With more exposure, our recruiting base increases and helps open more homes for visits.

  16. al March 15, 2010 10:31 am

    great idea stretch…
let me check my piggy bank.

  17. al March 15, 2010 10:35 am

i also think that only 5 or 6 max of the eight scholarship athletes will be kept for next year.

…all bets are off when a new coach enters the picture. loi’s and current scholarship guys can be let go and not bound by the new staff.

therefore, it would behoove the program to hire someone who can drag along a couple of new recruits to the scene this year.

  18. Kazz March 15, 2010 10:35 am

#13 CAL is the kind of team that will hoard all the bases they can against a shakey infield. Not feeling too excited about this challenge on Thursday, but no can help as we need as much challenges as possible before WAC play starts in two weeks with most of our time on the road against Utah State, Nevada, Boise State, and New Mexico State.

Last season, then #8 CAL came in and took advantage of an unsure and unexperienced D1 pitching staff. In 2009, then-true freshman Sarah Robinson started out the game against CAL and relinquinshed 5 runs before another true freshman Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu stepped in. I was at that game and the stolen bases from CAL was just too much amongst the consistent hitting.

It’s going to be a little different this season. We have our pitchers in place, yet the infield remains a question mark. Katie Grimes is gonna be very busy and is going to have to be very alert for at least 7 innings. If we cannot play our best and most complete game from inning to inning against CAL there will be plenty of situations where one can expect to see CAL getting runs most teams wouldn’t. Our pitchers can be great all night, but a few walks here and there or just a handful of hits is all CAL will need and even with two outs and a single, they can work that runner to 3rd at least with a single hit threat with still 2 outs. There will be no wiggle room for errors this weekend against CAL.

    BUT FIRST… Lipscomb. 😎

  19. Ralph March 15, 2010 10:36 am

Al the advisory committee are business people, will they ask about assistants, do they know who are the top assistants around the country, do they even attend UH basketball games, lots of questions to be answered. How are applicants vetted by the advisory committee, and what advise can they give JD after the interview.

  20. SteveM March 15, 2010 10:37 am

    Good morning everyone!

Will miss the Hale Ikena cattle call…am employed today on an priority PC job. 🙂

  21. Ralph March 15, 2010 10:39 am

Until Nash elevated Ganot to Assistant Coach, he was never, ever an assistant coach anywhere he worked, even at Santa Clara. He was in a non coaching, non recruiting position, possibly director of operations or personnel. Schedule travel, meals, logistics, etc

  22. al March 15, 2010 10:42 am

    jd’s scorecard thus far.

    new men’s volleyball coach
    new women’s basketball coach
    new men’s volleyball coach

    what’s next?

in the next six years he will have hired at least a couple more coaches.

methinks that shoji will retire in six years.

football is on the line. espn televising but one game is an indication.

baseball is still on the bubble. although the recent influx of local boys and increased crowds favors the coach’s tenure.

coolen will be here forever as long as he can maintain the aussie pipeline. plus, he is the program, in that he also is the groundskeeper, janitor, maintenance man. i’d bet that if you built him a little cottage in centerfield he’d live there.

  23. Ralph March 15, 2010 10:44 am

Al Riley cleaned house when he was first hired, takes moxy to do it, and I hope the new coach will evaluate the current roster and pull scholarships and build a good base. That means a lot of new faces need to bond quickly as possible to salvage the season, otherwise its wait to next year as the charges learn the system. Hopefully not too many JUCO players, one year to learn the system, then a year to play and they are gone, no continuity, got to start over again for that spot.

  24. (Jesse)James March 15, 2010 10:46 am

Good morning Tsaikos…hope all are doing well….

  25. al March 15, 2010 10:48 am

    ralphie…
i view the advisory committee as a necessary thing to be politically correct. i am sure they won’t tell us this out right, but, it is one of those things that is good to have. that way no one candidate can claim favoritism or some other unjust hiring method. they can say, well the committee decided and agreed that so and so was the best fit, blah, blah, blah. this is a great buffer for jd, who will ultimately make the final decision.

it is a typical hiring method of government agencis to have a selection board since they are always under the microscope when hiring for the high profile positions.

  26. BigIslandkurt March 15, 2010 10:52 am

    Re: ESPN,
If the warriors win….and create a Buzz, ESPN will pick up more games. ESPN LOVES UH…..we are typically the nation’s last game each week. However, we gotta win first. Create a buzz like the JJ years did and ESPN will eagerly comply.

    BIK

  27. al March 15, 2010 10:52 am

true that on the jc guys ralph.

however we need a quick fix. i imagine 4 jc guys who can jump in right away and 2-3 high school ballers.

remember, that we could flush out and find jc guys with 3 years to play if they were clearinghouse eligible out of hs and therefore, we could get them with 3yrs to play. i.e. bill amis.

that is why being a successful recruiter is priority one for any college coach.

  28. al March 15, 2010 10:55 am

looks i won’t make it to hale ikena.

have a good one guys. i would have loved to seen the look on the eyes of the exec chef as the tsaiko’s rolled in the place. then after the fourth trip up to the food line they’d go and disconnect the soft serve ice cream.

  29. RedZone March 15, 2010 10:55 am

    Candidates who are you?

    Who, who

    Who,who

Is one of the names Barnes?

If Riley Wallace is correct there were 35 to 40 applicants as of yesterday with maybe more to come. It is interesting how they are doing interviews now without weeding out the field first. Or maybe they have?

  30. Da Punchbowl Kid March 15, 2010 10:56 am

    la di da di dee
    la di da di da

  31. RedZone March 15, 2010 10:58 am

I think having assistants who can recruit is also a must.

  32. Kendall March 15, 2010 11:01 am

ST, any clues on who is being interviewed today?

  33. iwonderwhytheyhateme March 15, 2010 11:10 am

Only 1 ESPN game this year against USC…it’s really not the biggest shock of the century but still I would have thought maybe at least one more game gets televised.

Blessing in disguise maybe?…Maybe GARRET could check into the stats but in my recent memory we tend to do pretty bad whenever we are on national TV. Next year we can just focus on winning games and not have to worry about impressing the nation as much.

With Boise getting 6 games and in the BCS Champ. game race it’s going to be interesting to see the ratings. I would assume if they get a high amount of viewers the MWC will be licking their chops.

Does anyone know if 6 nationally televised games are the highest ever in our conference history?

Part time cook as well. Saw Coach Coolen making sure the post game BBQ for the ladies was “up to par” yesterday following their win over DePaul. 😎

  35. Stretch March 15, 2010 11:35 am

If UH gets only 1 game on ESPN, that makes the Oceanic PPV package more valuable since they will have rights to the rest of the games. I expect a bump up in cost for PPV this coming season.

  36. Da Punchbowl Kid March 15, 2010 11:40 am

If UH comes out blazin’ for say, the first 6 or 7 games, isn’t it possible that UH would want to add more UH games later in the season?

  37. Ricky from Virginia March 15, 2010 11:44 am

What a brutal football schedule…end the season with 4 road games? Is that for real?

  38. iwonderwhytheyhateme March 15, 2010 11:48 am

    Stretch,

Our local sports bars would benefit if the rates go up haha.

  39. al March 15, 2010 11:51 am

the wac schedule is not yet done.
what you see is just the wac opponents and who we play on the road as well as at home.

the commissioner once again is dilly dallying. actually they await the final espn schedule and then fill in the blanks.

  40. iwonderwhytheyhateme March 15, 2010 11:57 am

    DPBK,

I would think if we started off winning 5/7 games that they would want to add more games to ESPN.

The question is however, what games are we going to be able to offer to a national audience? Our “marque” games come in the beginning with USC, Colorado, and Army (even that might be pushing marque). We need to clear that hurdle first to get some attention. Not an easy task with all that travel.

Towards the end we have UNLV and Charleston Southern. I could see a possible Boise game being televised depending where they put us in the season. The last two games though leaves something more to be desired when it comes to TV imo.

I mean honestly if I wasn’t a UH fan and lived on mainland it would be a really really hard sell to get me to watch Hawaii vs. Charleston Southern over a Pac-10 or eve a Big East/ACC game. Even as a avid football fan it’s hard to get me to watch S. Florida or Rutgers play when its on TV. The trick though is if we schedule when there is absolutely no other games on. Maybe a Friday game might be a good idea.

That’s why I was hoping we would have a big name school during our Turkey Day game or something. That could have been a nice spot towards the end of the season should ESPN decide to add us for another game.

  41. ai-eee-soos March 15, 2010 11:57 am

This article did not specifically mention Hawaii-West Coast flights:

“…(CNN) — Continental Airlines will discontinue offering free food to economy-class passengers on the majority of its domestic flights in the United States and Canada and on flights to some leisure destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean, the airline announced Monday….”

Looks like gotta buy zip pac to carry on …..

  42. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2010 11:58 am

You’re probably asking: Why such a short post?
    Or maybe not.
It’s because we’re waiting for UH’s football schedule to be released. The WAC portion has been finalized, and it has been turned over to UH.
    Now we sit and wait.

  43. jm2375 March 15, 2010 12:26 pm

    #42 – it’s about time!! 👿

  44. Kazz March 15, 2010 12:32 pm

Good. I’ve been jealous of those that were somehow able to renew their season tickets without a conference schedule a few months ago.

Damn those people and their connections!!! 😛

  45. Kendall March 15, 2010 12:43 pm

If you can share any incite as to whom the two candidates being interviewed this afternoon that would be great.

Do you know if Gib Arnold is in town?

Did Kyle Smith pay his own way here?

  46. BigIslandkurt March 15, 2010 12:45 pm

Nash said it. So did Wags. — There is a strong corellation between Loosing seasons at UH and administration’s orders to improve graduation rates. Bottom line — In UH’s most successful seasons (in most high profile sports), JUCO players have been pivotal. When coaches are charged to improve graduation rates, it usually means more high school recruitment with a lessar push for JUCO’s. Some of our worst years have happened after such orders have come from the top. I really hope this trend does not see itself in to our football team as Mack puts great emphasis on graduating players. Stay tuned.

    BIK

  47. Garret March 15, 2010 1:01 pm

SJSU released their schedule…they play UH on November 20. Let us say that with ending games against teams like SJSU and UNLV, even if the Warriors are doing well they might not be picked up by ESPN.

  48. Garret March 15, 2010 1:03 pm

BSU has ESPN games on 3 straight Fridays–11/12, 11/19, and 11/26, so there aren’t going to be many Friday game opportunities for UH as the season goes on.

This also means that UH will play BSU relatively early in the WAC schedule, reducing the likelihood that the UH-BSU game would get on national TV.

  49. Garret March 15, 2010 1:05 pm

I just saw that BSU will play UH on 11/6. So, BSU will play UH on a Saturday and then Idaho the following Friday on a short week.

  50. Garret March 15, 2010 1:07 pm

UH has Fresno State on October 9.

  51. Garret March 15, 2010 1:11 pm

    9/2 USC
    9/11 at Army
    9/18 at Colorado
    9/25 Charleston Southern
    10/2 Louisiana Tech
    10/9 at Fresno State
    11/6 at BSU
    11/20 SJSU
    12/4 UNLV

  52. ai-eee-soos March 15, 2010 1:13 pm

    Kazz: re #44 –

    eh, no make eh.

  53. Garret March 15, 2010 1:14 pm

    9/18 at Colorado
    9/25 Charleston Southern
    10/2 Louisiana Tech
    10/9 at Fresno State
    10/16 Nevada
10/23 at Utah State (Utah State has UH as their homecoming opponent!)
    11/6 at BSU
    11/20 SJSU
    12/4 UNLV

  54. Garret March 15, 2010 1:16 pm

    9/2 USC
    9/11 at Army
    9/18 at Colorado
    9/25 Charleston Southern
    10/2 Louisiana Tech
    10/9 at Fresno State
    10/16 Nevada
10/23 at Utah State (Utah State has UH as their homecoming opponent!)
    11/6 at BSU
    11/20 SJSU
    11/27 at NMSU
    12/4 UNLV

  55. Garret March 15, 2010 1:18 pm

I cannot figure out when the Idaho game will be (either 10/30 or 11/13). Other notes:

Utah State actually scheduled UH as their homecoming game. That really shows how UH is not respected, even more than ESPN just picking 1 UH game.

with an ending stretch of SJSU, NMSU, and UNLV, it is not likely that ESPN would pick up a late UH game if the season is going well.

  56. postmanke March 15, 2010 1:22 pm

8 games before a bye week? not liking that..

  57. Stretch March 15, 2010 1:25 pm

I would expect UH to play Idaho on Oct 30. There is no way Mr Boise St put a bye week before UH travels to play BSU.

  58. Jack Flash March 15, 2010 1:26 pm

idaho plays boise on 11/12, so i guess they come here on 10/30

  59. jm2375 March 15, 2010 1:32 pm

so, UH’s homecoming opponent is Idaho?

  60. wafan March 15, 2010 1:49 pm

Gosh, how low have we sunk? Others are scheduling the Warriors for homecoming. Time to turn this around!!!

  61. wafan March 15, 2010 1:49 pm

Kind of reminds me of high school.

    HA!

  62. Slugger March 15, 2010 1:56 pm

    Pride.,

Will you be at the UH football alum get-together at the St. Louis Clubhouse tonight?

  63. Kazz March 15, 2010 2:05 pm

    Wafan,

We have to be someone’s HC opponent and it’s Utah State .

I know what you mean though. Back in high school, we (PCHS) always scheduled Kalani for our homecoming… well, execpt for my senior year in 99-00 where we lost but I cannot remember who it was.

  64. whitey March 15, 2010 2:09 pm

Garret, thanks for the advance schedule. What is surprising is that you know what the Warriors schedule will be and ST is still waiting for word from UH. D Inouchi is the media for UH, but somehow someone at UH dropped the ball on the Wahines sb championship game, and now can’t get the info to ST ahead of one of the Tsaikos. From my view, it looks very sad and gloomy.

  65. Pomai March 15, 2010 2:10 pm

What’s sad is that we are getting our UH Warriors schedule from going to other schools site’s…..

  66. whitey March 15, 2010 2:10 pm

Is it that hard to get the WAC schedule out to the media??????

  67. Kazz March 15, 2010 2:11 pm

I haven’t had the chance to read any articles today, but hope Kolten is ok.

That dinger of a foul tip that got him inside the right ankle was more than enough to make him hobble the rest of yesterday’s game and from our 1st base mid level seats, I could see down above the UH dugout to glance at the massive tape job the trainers had to do for Wong.

  68. whitey March 15, 2010 2:12 pm

I know that there is a 3 hr time difference, but sitting on info that is vital to the Warriors and their fans is derelection of duty.

  69. whitey March 15, 2010 2:14 pm

kazz, kolten suffered an unitentional dinger, but mickelson’s dinger was self inflicted.

  70. Jason March 15, 2010 2:18 pm

UH released it on their Web site about 13 minutes ago:

    http://www.hawaiiathletics.com/news/2010/3/15/FB_0315103038.aspx

  71. Jason March 15, 2010 2:18 pm

    Rather, 16 minutes ago.

  72. whitey March 15, 2010 2:42 pm

looks like a bird dropped into UH Athletic office and told them the WAC schedule for UH has already been posted.

  73. Kekoa March 15, 2010 3:16 pm

Al ~ No casualties from the mini-cc today. Top Chef was able to hang on to his job. Everyone kept their Tsaiko-sized rountrips to the Buffet table to a minimum of 2.

The Teryi-chicken-in-pasta seemed to go over big with everyone, and of course the Salisbury steak made for another popular entree to be considered. (KK destroyed a giant Idaho potato with all the fixin’s on top, and so did Ralph).

The Soft Serve ice cream machine took a major hit from us. All of the different pies were sampled, with several slices tasted of each until a winner was chosen.

Chocolate dipped Strawberries were spotted on most of the plates, while different types of melon slices were also popular.

Our table of 10 was situated right at the edge of the 1st fairway. Excellent table service, a beautiful setting with good food. beverages and great company!

    All for just $8.95!

We’ll schedule a remedial session for those who couldn’t make it. Part of our Tsaiko Tsummer Tschool program. I’ll be sure to make it with more advanced notice next time.

Stay tuned for the official date of the Practice T-gate. April 17th is being considered because the MBB team is on the road that weekend. Details forthcoming as soon as the reservations are confirmed. It’ll still prolly be before the fb schedule is finalized and a new bb coach is selected.

  74. jm2375 March 15, 2010 3:25 pm

Kekoa – a minimum of 2 trips? So what was the max # of trips? 😯 Was there any food left after you guys left? Oh wait, you probably closed the place down. Hope they enough food for dinner.

  75. Jason March 15, 2010 3:29 pm

We left just enough food so that the workers could get a nice lunch after closing, no more.

  76. Garret March 15, 2010 3:44 pm

I’m glad that the UH schedule is finally out. After Jack Flash posted the info on Idaho we actually knew what the final UH schedule was, but it is nice that UH got the word out eventually.

I wasn’t able to post after Jack Flash provided the info because I had already left to pick up my daughter from school. We went to Buca di Beppo for dinner–today they are giving a FREE huge plate of Spaghetti with Meat Sauce (supposed to serve 2-3 adults) for each other 2-3 person entree purchased. They let you also use a $10 off coupon, so you can get a *lot* of food today for $10.

  77. Garret March 15, 2010 3:49 pm

10 straight weeks during the season without a bye week…wow. Considering the worn-down turf at Aloha Stadium that will result in more turf-related injuries than last season, the Warriors will really need depth to get through that stretch.

The Hawaii exception allowing an extra game results in UH getting to play 13 games, which means there is just 1 bye week. When the NCAA increased the normal season from 11 (12 for UH and teams that visit Hawaii) games to 12 (13 for UH and teams that visit Hawaii), the benefit of the Hawaii exception decreased because teams want that extra bye week.

I really wish that at least one of the final 3 teams for the season were more TV-friendly to increase the chance that UH would get on ESPN.

  78. Manoa Mist March 15, 2010 3:52 pm

Men’s hoops. To clean house or not to clean house? That is the question. Really, I ain’t too worried about the new coach and whether he keeps folks or starts anew. Where do we have to go but up? We stay last place already. The new guy can’t be any worse then where we already be.
If UH is really as unique and special as folks are saying – hardest place to recruit to in DI hoops, etc – I say we hire Jellybean Bryant.
Can you imagine the worldwide publicity that would be generated if Kobe’s dad was to coach UH? Kobe come out for interviews in his UH shirt. Kobe talk to recruits about playing for his dad. International intrigue.
You want exotic, Jellybean is your man. I’d at least interview the guy. And if JD could get Kobe to say, donate some kala to UH, maybe get some of his teammates involved in that too, it would make for some real interesting times in Manoa.

    re: 2010 schedule

first time I can remember UH is not playing at home on Thanksgiving weekend.

  80. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2010 3:55 pm

    I’m all for Jellybean.
    Awesome summer camps.
I think he speaks Italian, too.

  81. Garret March 15, 2010 3:58 pm

The really sad thing is that UH goes 10 straight weeks in a row and then has a bye week…to get ready to play SJSU.

  82. Jack Flash March 15, 2010 4:01 pm

How’s the weather in Manoa? Just wondering if i should bring the wife and kids out for the ballgame tonight, or just make it boys night out…

  83. Kekoa (iPhone) March 15, 2010 4:13 pm

Bring on the Bryant’s! Lot’s of positive vibes, lot’s of residual income from the Laker Effect.

We bees turning away 5 star ‘cruits!

  84. al March 15, 2010 4:19 pm

garret…i at first thought that too.

however, beating sjsu will be a pivotal game for us. it could mean the difference between the hawaii bowl or not.

besides we recruit against them in the bay area every year.

  85. Kekoa (iPhone) March 15, 2010 4:22 pm

WTF is going on with the fb schedule? Do we need to send in the Undercover Boss?

Who kidnapped the monkey, threw away his darts and the WAC calender?

DPK?…let’s talk about that monkey you had. The darts we can get from A-Sports or Rob25.

Then we tie the WAC Commish to a chair holding a
calender in front his mug! Can’t do any worse.

  86. al March 15, 2010 4:24 pm

kekoa….yah, my heart, i mean my stomach was thinking about you guys, umm, the soft serve all through the mid day.

    next one. for sure.

  87. wafan March 15, 2010 4:27 pm

    When is BS’ bye week?

  88. addahknowjoe March 15, 2010 4:34 pm

I could care less about the fall schedule. It’s either too weak or ill timed by all accounts.

The who, when or where one plays shouldn’t matter to champions.

Yesterday, today and tomorrow is my immediate interest.

-What are the players doing today to prepare themselves for fall season?

    -Who’s running?

    -Who’s lifting?

-Who’s making the little sacrifices that add up to an awesome season?

-Who’s stepping forth, taking charge and becoming leaders?

-Who’s improving their game and skills?

-Who’s becoming students of the game?

-Who’s focused and dedicated to winning a National Championship?

No excuse. Tomorrow’s Champions are made today.

  89. Kekoa (iPhone) March 15, 2010 4:35 pm

Seriously folks. We need to get a handle on this schedule business! Anyone know who I have to *lean on* to get a more favorable schedule posted every year? (I can lean really hard!)

  90. Kekoa (iPhone) March 15, 2010 4:40 pm

A-joe ~ I see your point, but why cause untold damage to our Warriors by playing them 10 straight weeks? Gotta give ’em time to bread!

  91. (Jesse)James March 15, 2010 4:46 pm

    A-Joe…lovin’ it…

To take a famous quote from a famous team one step further:

“Practice Like A Champion Today, Play Like A Champion At Gametime.”

  92. SteveM March 15, 2010 4:55 pm

I agree with A-Joe about the schedule…just beat everyone in the first 5 WAC games and then nobody’s WAC sked looks smooth and easy.
If you can’t do that, complaining about the schedule is moot. At least no grueling long road trips not of UH’s own doing.

  93. protector March 15, 2010 4:57 pm

    iwonderwhytheyhateme & others,

I agree that the last part of the UH schedule looks lackluster & would probably be unattractive to ESPN. I’m more concerned with the effort they will put forth against the Trojans. It will obviously dictate the rest of the season & could go a long way toward establishing credibility and hopefully diminishing the bitter aftertaste of games like Wisconsin & the infamous Sugar Bowl. A good effort there will yield more opportunities & vice versa…and that’s the way it should be.

  94. (Jesse)James March 15, 2010 5:04 pm

#93…Protector…that’s true. I recall a certain year where we has a tremendous outing in Tuscaloosa in front of 90,000 plus and held our own. We almost came up with the big upset and considering that was the first game of the season, away from home, and against the Crimson Tide, I thought we’d be in for a tremendous season because we showed poise in the face of overwhelming adversity. I truly believe, that one game and the experience it gave the team and cohesiveness that was achieved, was the impetus and set the tone for the excitement we experienced that year, the vicotries that year, and the expectations and victories expeienced during the the following, Sugar Bowl year.

  95. SteveM March 15, 2010 5:08 pm

Hmmm… Saturday NMSU away game on Nov. 27…

  101. koakane March 15, 2010 5:27 pm

    evening tsaiko’s country

well stated ajoe, I agree just play um as they come one game at a time. work hard now, stay focused and the good things will happened.

  102. Garret March 15, 2010 5:27 pm

    When is BS’ bye week?

    wafan,

Since BSU is playing only 12 games this year (since they do not play in Hawaii), they have 2 bye weeks. One of their bye weeks is being used after their season opener against Virginia Tech…the game is on *Monday*, so they needed to use a bye week instead of playing a road game on Monday and trying to play again on Saturday.

BSU’s other bye week is being used when they play La Tech on a Tuesday. They have 3 extra days to prepare for La Tech, and *4* extra days to prepare for their next game…against UH! So, BSU effectively has a bye week before they play UH at home.

  103. Garret March 15, 2010 5:31 pm

I would agree with A-Joe *except* that playing on national TV is essential for recruiting and for national respect. The way that the schedule is set up, it is highly unlikely that UH will get ESPN games late in the season even if UH is having a winning season. I was hoping for a Nevada, BSU, Fresno State, or some other higher profile game that might attract ESPN’s attention.

I’m guessing that the WAC and ESPN do not expect UH to have a good season, so they set up the schedule to set up TV games for other WAC teams late in the season. One big recruiting tool for UH on the mainland was the ESPN games that recruits and their families would watch…with other WAC teams getting the ESPN games instead, recruiting just got harder for UH on the mainland.

  104. koakane March 15, 2010 5:39 pm

    Garret

the only way to get good recruits, national exposure, respect is to win and win consistently. boise state has proved it year after year. do this and everything take care of it self.

  105. al March 15, 2010 5:41 pm

    nothing wrong with the schedule.
    we got seven tailgate games.
ok, wish we had eight tailgaters.
but, that’s what the hawaii bowl is for right?

remember the good old days where we played a minimum eight regular season home games.

fresno state leads the wac in fielding at .968 vs hawaii’s .944.
    its a slim margin really.
that means fresno st makes 97 out of 100 chances.
whereas the wahine make 94 out of 100 chances.

not real bad all in all especially since we have been hitting .302.

  111. COPO March 15, 2010 5:51 pm

UH team that went into Tuscaloosa may have been most talented UH team ever, Colt, Nasty, Mauia, Bess, Grice-M, Rivers, S.Satele, Estes, Uperesa, Esera, Alama-Francis, Purcell, Peters, most Warriors players drafted or free agents from this team. Talent helps a team keep their poise.

  112. A-House March 15, 2010 6:24 pm

UH will never get a favorable schedule until Benson is gone, but more importantly, is UH winning consistently at home and on the road.

And, Benson could have purposely scheduled a “lousy” end to keep UH off ESPN especially if UH beats Boise St on the road.

  113. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 15, 2010 6:43 pm

    Al,

On paper it doesn’t seem like its that bad but we’ve beaten the poor dead horse to the point of it being a whole different crime.

The way we’ve some basic fielding errors leads us to just ponder the possibilities of what our win loss record could have been.

Then again gotta treat each new week for what it is… A new string of possibilities to improve further.

  114. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 15, 2010 6:46 pm

DON’T RUB IT SMITH!!!!!! DON’T RUB IT!!!!

  115. Kekoa March 15, 2010 6:52 pm

Oh wow Al, I don’t get at least a ‘nice try’ for wanting to level the scheduling field?

I don’t wanna hear any whining or complaining about BS having a strategic advantage come game day. How lucky they are to just happen to have a bye week to prepare for UH. Gee, I wonder who made dat schedule happen?

Remember the old adage about Pi$$ Poor Prior Planning…? Our team is preparing even harder and better than ever. Meanwhile what’s wrong with looking for fair and balanced play dates with possible TV match ups like Garret said?

If we happen to trounce Army, after beating USC…some of these egghead producers would be crying in their beer. I’d love to see that happen!

  116. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 15, 2010 6:53 pm

You know, a Grease will apologize if he manages to hit any nerves here, but, a brotha’ must needs vent koko — what in a Tiger Woods’ non-Q&A press conference/speech are we playing CHARLESTON SOUTHERN again? We trying to relive Civil War battles again alternate reality style with Hawaii in the mix? I’m telling you, we gonna end UP in that conference (whatever conference from which they hail) we keep attending this téte-a-téte. I don’t wanna hear, oh, “Charleston Southern a good team, Charleston Southern a good team.” They ain’t. Wake up. Warriors can have stomach flu and still beat ’em.

And I’m telling you, we don’t beat a disjunct, confused, glory’s over-lights-out-post-JordanBulls-like USC this time around (because the last loss against the Irish was simply inexcusable), I say for sure, Warrior football voluntarily bucks down to 1a or div’ 2 or whatever else conference whose games are aired on public-access. Perhaps our team will regain it own glory back via, I dunno, Appalachian St. (who we also played, no?) V. Wolvies-type victory, no?

    That is all.

  127. anonymous March 15, 2010 7:44 pm

Five months or so before the NCAA football season starts ESPN puts out it’s *tentative* schedule.

Right now it shows UH with one appearance.

Can ESPN add more games to their schedule?

    Sure they can.

Can UH be included/slated for additional appearances on ESPN if they’re having a good season next year?

    Sure they can.

Does ESPN have their eyes on telecasting the UH game w/ Colorado and UNLV game?

Sure they do. This site http://lsufootball.net/tvschedule.htm describes that these games are being considered.

Do I think there’s a conspiracy from the WAC (Benson) or ESPN to shun UH?

No I don’t. Center stage is for winning teams. Right now UH isn’t a winning team. . ESPN has a product to sell. They’re not interested in telecasting games where one team (UH) does a belly flop each time (recently) they appear. ESPN wants TV viewers glued to their TV sets watching a competitive football game, a back and forth game, not a lopsided game. When you think about it how can you fault ESPN? Or the WAC? Or Benson? The reality is that the burden is on UH on how they perform (the last two seasons) than to think otherwise.

  128. postmanke March 15, 2010 7:55 pm

we play in the WAC, are you kidding me.. some blame the commissioner of a weak league that the schedule is not favorable? The way I look at it, the whole league is favorable! any place any time against a WAC opponent. We should be licking our chops the same way as BSU that we get to play a WAC schedule. A WAC SCHEDULE! It’s a WAC Schedule! lol

Mr Benson, I would like to thank you, no really, Thank You! that we get to play Idaho, Utah St, Nevada, La Tech, SJSU, NMSU, Fresno St and Boise St year in year out. – well ok, not Boise St.

how in the hell we would even think about a Pac 10 schedule when we call a WAC schedule unfavorable? If you cant go to a bowl game with this schedule you better look in the mirror. …again

I’m grateful for this schedule, we should confidently beat every WAC opponent – Yes even BSU! If you have a doubt? get outta the WAC. coincidently, that’s how you get out of the WAC – You beat every team year in year out! Pac 10 – yea right!

  129. postmanke March 15, 2010 8:03 pm

You cant win in the WAC, say what you want, your ship is sinking! I dont think JD likes the idea of bailing water out of a once was top 25 program.

  130. Bulla March 15, 2010 8:13 pm

testing in the weight room this week for the Warriors…..Bench is done, Power Cleans and Squats coming tomorrow……..IMUA WARRIORS

  131. Ralph March 15, 2010 8:14 pm

the way things are going now, JD may have an opportunity to pick two more advisory committees to help him with coaches selection. We talk Pac 10, we are getting tooled by USC in bb, a team struggling in the preseason. Oregon State nearly swept up, and Oregon is only in its second year of baseball and they took a game from us. We can’t qualify for the Sheraton Bowl while playing a WAC schedule and Central Arkansas and UNLV.

We win, ESPN will come knocking on the door, but first, got to win. No matter how Benson sets up the WAC schedule, it is still the WAC teams that we are playing, not formidable, I don’t think so anyway. Road trips are always tough, but when we live out here and want to play D1, we got to travel far and learn to accept it.

  132. Ralph March 15, 2010 8:16 pm

how is the beast shoulder, any issues remaining from two weeks ago. And no feed him chili before he squats!

  133. al March 15, 2010 8:20 pm

charleston southern…i believe one can thank herman fumbler for that one. believe it was a two game inking at the time.

actually, even the powerhouse bcs schools will schedule a push over every year instead of taking a bye.

in our case, we may need the win.

  134. postmanke March 15, 2010 8:22 pm

just for fun, putting things into perspective, can you imagine a Pac 12 schedule like this..

    Sept. 2 USC

    Sept. 11 at Army

    Sept. 18 at Colorado

    Sept. 25 Arizona

    Oct. 2 California

Oct. 9 at UCLA – homecoming

    Oct. 16 Arizona St

Oct. 23 at Oregon – homecoming

    Oct. 30 Washington St

Nov. 6 at Oregon St – homecoming

    Nov. 20 Texas*

    Nov. 27 at Stanford* homecoming

    Dec. 4 UNLV

Thank you for a WAC schedule!!

  135. Ralph March 15, 2010 8:52 pm

and to read that Mac asked for a roll over extension after we lost to ND to finish 7-7. JD needs to raise the bar on all coaches, after all, we are competing against WAC teams in all sports and that alone should help our win totals.

  136. Na Pueo March 15, 2010 9:00 pm

    Don Weir,

Thank you for all you’ve done for Na Koa. It will be Na Koa’s loss. It’s too bad our head football coach didn’t think you did a good job. Judging from the comments of support on this blog, we know better!!!

  137. Ralph March 15, 2010 9:05 pm

De Paul’s sb coach was happy with the play of his team even with the loss to Na Wahine in the championship game. He looked at the bigger picture, he came in with questions and the team with a 7-6 record, his team finished the tournament 4-1 and key players turned it up a notch. His team had a formidable tournament this week, they face UDUB, Michigan, Arizona State, Fresno State and UNLV in a sb tournament at Fullerton.

Is there a minimum number of nationally televised games each team in the WAC will get?

The sad part is that UH needs to be thankful that USC decided to play us….All USC games get televised.

Should it have been another Div-1AA school or similar its very possible that we wouldn’t have a nationally televised game.

  142. whitey March 15, 2010 9:26 pm

  143. Ralph March 15, 2010 9:32 pm

9-0 USC after a 12-2 whipping by them. Last season our pitching came through in the clutch, late inning hitting heroics, this season, still waiting for a revival.

  144. Derek March 15, 2010 9:32 pm

UH baseball team can’t hit for beans. I should have a friend who’s an optometrist to check the eyes of all those batters because there is something wrong with this team. The pitching is something to be desired.
For some reason, UH pitchers do not, if any, throw a change up to keep batters honest by changing speeds. Something is really wrong with this team and maybe the responsibility should be on the coaches. I don’t think the coaches are doing a good job of coaching the players and I don’t think Trapasso is a very good coach as far as strategy is concerned. Oftentimes, he leaves the pitchers in too long and the pitchers get bombed, only to have the reliever some in cold with runners on base and get more in deep kim chee. I really think Trapasso won’t be around next year if this UH baseball team doesn’t make it to a regional. USC is not the powerhouse that it was before. Look at their record.
I also feel that UH batters take too many pitches and don’t go after sure strikes. To me, UH batters should be more agressive and take it to the opponents. UH is too passive.

But, what’s new. The only programs that are doing really well are Wahine volleball and Wahine Softball and men’s volleyball. Not coincidentally the coahces, Shoji and Coolen are very good at what they do and know what kind of players they need, and get. Charlie Wade has done a nice job so far, but we have more work to do. Sorry, McMackin hasn’t proven himself to me yet and maybe after this coming season we will know how our football program in which direction we are going, up or continue to spiral downward. The schedule is manageble. I see 8-5 very attainable and 9-4 a good possibility. With luck, 11-2. With no luck 6-7.

  145. Ralph March 15, 2010 9:37 pm

    new mbb coach?

  155. al March 15, 2010 11:31 pm

its quite possible that, should kyle smith become the new head coach he could retain eran ganot in some capacity.

tim shepherd may also be able to keep his job as director of operations.

I may get crucified for giving my choice for new UH basketball coach. Our problem is middle of the ocean where only rare talent risks coming here in no mans land. Name recognition is hard. JJ provided a NFL quarterback background, A NFL coach. The Inventor of the post Mouse Davis run and shoot. Mouse did not invent the run and shoot but was the architecture of the one that put Portland State on the newswire. JJ tweaked it to his own design. JJ was no JFK as an orator but he was enigmatic none the less. We need an enigmatic coach, We need someone with a built in name recognition like JJ who can attract recruits just on name alone. JJ was an NFL player. Red Rocha was an NBA one time all-star. Red was enigmatic in his own way. One of the few talented big men way back than. Why not Joe Jellybean Bryant? He played almost ten years in the NBA. Yes he never coached Div1 college. But he coached the women’s professional team in LA two years. He coached overseas couple years. To my knowledge Red Rocha did not coach Div 1 basketball before coaching UH. JJ never coached DIV1 college football before he head coached here. Jellybean has name recognition on all levels of basketball. He is the father of future hall of famer Kobe. Recruiting will still be hard but some recruits just may think ‘If Kobe’s dad thinks coaching in the middle of the Pacific is cool, I think it’s cool for me too. JJ was enigmatic and attracted good talent. Red Rocha was a former NBA player and you can’t tell me his name didn’t help attract some talent. Hooray for the Gib’s and Kyle Smith’s and Boyle’s but these gentlemen would command high salaries with no guarantee. I am most certain Jellybean would take the job far below what these three would want. Kobe already said on the internet his dad would be a good fit for the UH, Money can’t buy that kind of publicity. Money can’t buy the kind of publicity JJ and Red provided for the UH. And in these hard economic times we got JJ and Red for a bargain. Jellybean would be a bargain and provide money can’t buy publicity for cash strapped UH. Alright people, start throwing stones as I know lots will think my idea is cooky and crazy!

There are quite a few laptop manufacturers that also recognize the need for higher RAM which is why there are some which offer upgrade worthy versions where you can increase the RAM to about 2 GB also. This is not only possible but also becoming increasingly common in the world of mini laptops.
