Leach out; “The Beast”
It’s official: Mike Leach was fired as head coach at Texas Tech.
And, yes, UH has received your e-mails and read your posts: You want Leach to be the Warriors’ offensive coordinator.
There are natural ties. Leach hired Greg McMackin as Tech’s defensive coordinator in 2000. Mike Smith, who played at Tech, was a UH grad assistant the past season.
And Leach runs a four-wide offense that shares the same DNA as UH’s offense.
But Leach is not coming here. No money. No opening. His forthcoming law suit. And, of course, UH’s offense is starting to click. Rolo is one of the bright, young minds of offensive football. His experience in 2009 will make him a better play-caller in 2010.

We’re proud of all of Hawai‘i’s Sons — the ones who stay or go away — but we have special appreciation for defensive tackle Ryan “The Beast” Eastman because we consider him to be part of our blog family.
According to proud papa Bulla, The Beast has secured a release from Weber State and is ready to compete for the Warriors. There’s paperwork to be filled and a tryout to attend, but we’re hopeful he will successfully fulfill his dream of playing for the hometown team.
Bulla writes:
“Ryan knows that he is a walk on and he just wants a chance to play at a higher level and compete with the other Warriors. He will have to redshirt this year and start from the bottom. But he gets to train, work out, learn the system, and play on the Scout team , which he wants to do because he gets to work out against the 1st string O linemen. he loves the challenge, and i love his statement, ‘Dad, it’s time … ‘”

I remember meeting Ryan just before he went off to Weber State and was surprised at two different things – his gentleness & friendly shyness and his drive. Clearly his playing name did not extend to his real world.
It will be interesting to see where he’ll be in the fall of 2013 – after he graduates and he’s used his remaining eligibility.
i assume that he’ll be attending UH spring semester. I’m curious – does he still maintain his residency status or is he considered an out-of-stater because he went to college out of state?
Did you know that until 1970 a woman student at UH took her residency from either her husband or her father is she were under the age of 20 – legal age back then? Only if a woman were fully emanicipated could she be a resident of the state of Hawaii on her own behalf for tuition purposes. For example, if a local girl married a member of the military who claimed residency elsewhere, she would lose her residency status – even if she didn’t go there even to visit her in-laws.
POMAI: What conclusions about men’s basketball did you all reach yesterday over a six-hour lunch? What kinds of ideas did you come up for UH football’s coaching staff – especially the head guy. It was frustrating seeing Amis, Thompson, and Flemings sitting on the bench in street clothes.The last two will be back this Saturday, but still…..

Seriously, this is excellent news for father and son, who both bleed green and black. Ryan is going to be a tremendous asset for the Warriors, and we know that he backs his heart up with the hard work that is needed to be a great competitor. I have been following Tenchijin off and on. That last episode was epic. I also enjoyed the travelogue at the end which showed the historical sites associated with the story. Very cool stuff.

As I said in an earlier post, I only know Bulla and the Beast through this blog and the Advertiser articles.
Bulla has always acted as any parent would, proud and protective of his son. And while Bulla’s anxiety almost got the better of him, Ryan remained calm and focused. It really shows his character. He will be a great addition to the Warrior team.

True, coming up next for him is the road of a non-schollie walk-on but it would be unfair not to note that he leaves behind a full-ride at Weber St.; Big Sky conference honors for the past two seasons as well as (at least one that I can recall) Defensive POW recognition; and probably pre-season conference, if not national, all-star recognition and almost certainly a captain’s roll for the Wildcats.

we are just grateful for the blessings, and Ryan realizes he is on the very bottom of the totem pole. knowing that, he welcomes the opportunity to work out, train, run, and practice with all of the other Warriors that are currently in Manoa if he does well at the tryout. Ryan is just one guy, a Crusader at heart, who just wants to do anything he can to help the team in any capacity. For him to just have the chance to wear the Green and Black, is something he does not take for granted. but mahalo for the kind words…….

I’m assuming that these are players that have already been offered. So, unless they decide to go elsewhere, we really don’t have any scholies left that are free and clear for a prospect that may suddenly surface.
In that vein, it ain’t easy recruiting and managing your scholarship allotment. You want the kids to make the best decision for their future, yet at the same time, you the coaches to maximize their scholarship offerings.

I’m a little late to the party but… Just wanted to drop my best wishes and congratulations to the Eastman family. Rejoicing at the arrival/return of “The Beast” and can’t wait to see him in action on the field!
Capitol -ist/WassupDoc: you can’t lose your residency status just by leaving to go to school. Of course, you have to not have established residency elsewhere. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the kind folks at the tuition office aren’t going to make a fuss about it.
Bulla, congratulations to Ryan for having the guts to pursue his dream. He will be a valuable addition to the team.
As far as the (non-)possibility of Leach coming to UH in some capacity… why would we want him? He would not stick around for long. With his success as a HC in a BCS conference some school or the pros would poach him within a year and it would be back to the drawing board. He would be gone before anything could be properly implemented. It is nuts to even think about it. Ron Lee has been in the Run & Shoot for a very long time and knows it. Rolo has had success in the system and is proving himself very capable. Maybe RL is the not the visionary that JJ is, but he has the smarts to develop the game plan. More to the point I think we can all see that developing and refining a sophisticated offensive scheme like the R&S does not happen overnight. RL and Rolo are not likely to be headed anywhere else soon and both have strong ties to the school. There is an advantage in that I think.

Seriously, that is a good question. I personally wouldn’t want a coach here who would do that to a player for any reason.

Sorry to have missed out yesterday…been pretty busy though between work and seeing mom in the hospital, I’ve been running around like a chicken without a head…LOL Mom is getting better though…they already have her sitting up and doing leg exercises which is a good thing…one day at a time and hopefully she’ll be out of there by the end of January.

BREAKING NEWS : UH SHOW INTEREST IN MIKE LEACH!!!
Well I heard that we did in fact let go of Ron Lee and are in talks with Coach Leach for the O-Coordinator job. I am super excited about this news and his ability to bring that potent Air-Raid offense to UH.
Honestly when we talk about JJ being one of the select few who can run an offense with so much brass, Leach belongs in the other “few” group.
It’ll be interesting to see how negotiations and the money factor is balanced.
And off course if you are still reading this and believe every word of it, bless your heart.
But honestly it would be so awesome if we could get Leach to come to UH. Yes yes Rolovich is making improvements with the offense but (speaking PURELY hypothetically) if we did have a chance for Leach as OC AND had the money you gotta take him…
Anyone know the key difference between an Air-Raid and Run ‘n Shoot? I know in so much as they do have a few more running schemes outside what we do and run a 5-wide sometimes.

If grades make you a long shot for college, you’re much more likely to get a break if you can play ball.
Texas was one of seven schools that reported no use of special admissions, instead describing “holistic” standards that consider each applicant individually rather than relying on minimum test scores and grade-point averages.
But the school also acknowledged in its NCAA report that athletic recruits overall are less prepared. At Texas, the average SAT score for a freshman football player from 2003 to 2005 was 945 — or 320 points lower than the typical first-year student’s score on the entrance exam.
At Alabama, 19 football players got in as part of a special admissions program from 2004 to 2006, the most recent years available in the NCAA report. The school tightened its standards for “special admits” in both 2004 and 2007, but from 2004 through 2006, Crimson Tide athletes were still more than 43 times more likely to benefit from such exemptions.
Alabama coach Nick Saban offered no apologies.
Gerald Gurney, incoming president of the National Association of Academic Advisers for Athletics, favors a return by the NCAA to the minimum test score requirement abandoned several years ago. He said the NCAA’s “virtually open admissions standards” threaten academic integrity.
“Special admissions, in and of itself, isn’t something to be ashamed of. It does add value to a university,” said Gurney, senior associate athletic director for academics and student life at Oklahoma. “However, when you have students who need such a great deal of remediation, it jeopardizes the very essence of the university.”
The AP review also identified eight schools where athletes were no more likely than other students to get a break with special admissions: Arizona State, Arkansas State, Boise State, Iowa, Kent State, Mississippi State, New Mexico and West Virginia.

The thought of bringing Mike Leach here is silly. Leach was winning because Tech has a huge sports budget, facilities to die for, endless perks for athletes, located in Texas and alumni with deep pockets. Winning with x’s and o’s is great when you have even teams like in pop warner. Modern college football in general is a game of who has the most money, and who is willing to skirt the rules.

Has his former SLHS teammate, Scott Smith, made any commitments anywhere? With Jacob Barit competing at middle linebacker and Geordean Hanohano on the D-Line, we will have a little reunion of the Crusaders of a couple of years ago. Kamalu Umu is also a very good player from the class before. Their rival from Kahuku, Kaniela Tuipulotu, will certainly be a great one. When does spring practice start?

I really don’t care if a football player was a primadona but if he was hurt – slight concussion or major one – if story is correct that he was locked in storage or electrical storage closet – I don’t think such a coach should be hired, let alone considered.

Counselor Tom, at #156, there is a most interesting post about what this “electrical room” is like. This is the same room that is used to interview coaches. Not going get into this more, but this is a case where three sides may come out the loser, TT, James, and Leach.
TT had a mbb coach who had a worse record as far as athlete abuse, but the school neva did anything to him. Why, I really don’t know, but he is a winning coach. So, did TT do wrong by keeping hiim till he retired???

it has been fun posting the last few days since this is truly a dead week as far as recruiting, but it is a highlight week for college fb. right now, the pac-10 is getting runned over by everyone and hope the ducks can salvage sumthing for them. the 2 underdogs, cincy and boise, i am cheering for them because they play UH and look forward to seeing us in action against them.
as far as me predicting bowl winners, i am not very good, but i truly like the underdogs.
sum are not too happy about boise, but give them their kudos. if they can knock tcu, there is a chance they could finish #2. this would be good for the WAC cause in all probability ESPN will show more WAC games, give the WAC huge exposure, and in turn help all the schools financially.
thinking about it we could be playing 2 teams in the top 10 next season and who knows what the outcome will be. it would truly be sumthing if we win both games. hooooooo haaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

That’s a good and funny one…. Mike Leach as offensive coordinator under Greg McMackin.
But you forgot the most important reason. Why would he want to work under his former defensive coordinator knowing what he knows? Leach “the mad scientist” might be a little off and eccentric, but he isn’t insane enough to do that.
No surprise there. Go ask any long time Red Raider fan about why he ended up out of coaching for a few years… teaching a class at Tech until JJ came calling after Glanville left for PSU.
Corey Neilson, you da man! There is no way Mike Leach is going to come to Hawaii so forget about it. Recruiting priority. Number 1, we need a place kicker, a good one. Two, defense wins championships and we weren’t good the last 2 years. So, if UH is smart we need defensive linemen and pass rushers. Cornerbacks are also valuable.
But, I still feel we need a big back who can break tackles, somebody who is around 6’0 to 6’2 and about 225-240 w/ low center of gravity w/ about 4.6 speed. Anybody knows somebody who fits that mold? This kid from Calif. by the name of Vainuku seems to be pretty good from the clips I saw.

In case you didn’t watch the game either in person or on K5, the Wahine pounded poi again tonight. Behind as much as 10 points in the first half of the first half, they played back to a tie and then kept the kent State from taking the lead until the last couple of minutes – and then pulled it off by winning by 3.
Coach Dana has instilled the Never Give Up ethic in the team. Maybe all the student-athletes playing for UH in all the other sports might take a lesson or two from the women.
Na Wahine return to the Stan Sheriff Center on January 13. It would be really nice if 1,000 fans showed up to support the team.
LOL: I am not clear on what you are talking about with McMackin and Texas Tech. I must be missing something. After his stint at TT McMackin coached for the 49ers when Erickson was there. He was, of course, also Erickson’s DC at Seattle and at Miami. He took a brief hiatus from coaching before coming back to the Warriors, but so what?

If I remember correctly, Coach Mack was also voted one of the nation’s top coaches while at Texas Tech. Then he went to the 49’s for a few years. Then in 2007 he went back to TT to teach for one semester. If TT thought so badly of him, why would they hire him as an instructor? Then in the second half of 2007, he came back to Hawaii.

The only thing that bothered me about the Na Wahine game today was the final score. Wahine truly dominated the boards tonight but the final score didn’t reflect that.
But tonight’s effort was a team effort. And that will pay dividends down the road.

i am sure that every coach is just chomping at the bit in anticipation of jan. 2nd.
critical is the order importance as each coach prepares their home visits, follow up visits, and official visits as they aproach the stretch run of the all important recruiting process.

Amazing how much work it was to keep the Tsai-ko ohana updated!
I am going to check on the # of tickets sold v. the number who had their tickets scanned because there certainly were not 1,444 people in the Stan Sheriff Center tonight. The upper section was closed off and I only counted about 300 in the two end zones – not counting the band – and our area above the two benches. Across the way, there were maybe another 250 or so.
That many tickets sold is fine, but the team deserves to have our support in person as well.
Na Wahine cleared the boards again & again and made some really solid plays, but the spirit is what I noticed above all.
Don’t forget – the guys kick off the WAC season this Saturday against Idaho.
Whitey Iowa State plays Minnesota tomorrow at 1 pm, unfortunately it is televised on nflL. you might be able to find a bar on the dark side that will carry the game.
Ronnie, KROQ has been so kind to us over the years with the Christmas Acoustic Concert as it makes me proud that your son attended the event with the MANY Rock n Roll bands that play for the worthy cause for non profits.

Funny how the McMackin haters twist even the Mike Leach debacle into an attack on Mack.
While Mack was at Texas Tech, he was recognized for being a great recruiter. He left Texas Tech for better paying jobs at the pro level, and did a great job as a coach of pro defenses.
Idaho showed today the value of giving a coach time to get his staff and system in place and to develop the athletes needed to make the system work.
I think that we are going to turn the corner next year, the way that Idaho turned the corner this year. To me the best sign is that our guys worked hard and never gave up this year, even when they were getting clobbered. That is a sign to me that they had not lost faith in the coaches or their team mates.
Our coaches overcame great adversity the last two years. They showed that they could develop three quarterbacks who can run the R&S with success. The offense showed flashes of being what they had been in the glory years of Colt; they also showed that they were still a work in progress at other times. The defense really struggled, but rose to the occaison for the Navy game. I find great hope in all of that.
Finally, the idea that the UH football coaching job is some wonderful opportunity that Mainland coaches are despreately seeking is deluded.
The people who have made Hawaii teams competitors are guys like Dave Shoji, Vince Goo, Les Murakami, and Riley Wallace, coaches who love and understand Hawaii and wanted to stay here. Mack fits right in with them. He deserves the chance to build the program without all this hostile demand for instant gratification.

Aside from the character & economic issues which would preclude Leach’s hiring, some forget that UH’s Offense is qualitatively different from Texas Tech’s. Installing that version would not be a minor thing to be implemented during the off-season. I’m sure it would delight the true haters & bashers as it would sabotage, if not derail, the progress that the Offense has been making. To ask the QBs & receivers (who are just getting comfortable to our system) to adjust to a different one is just ludicrous & unjustifiable. It would truly stymy point production and the haters know that Leach wouldn’t get the blame; it would go right back to Coach Mack so that the haters can repeat their idiotic mantra. No such luck. As this team solidifies, Coach Mack will have the last laugh.
Ryan: Your gift on the field will now shine even more with the Warriors. Bulla’s right, its time for you to be at the next level. So……let the real games begin!!!!
