Leach out; “The Beast”

It’s official: Mike Leach was fired as head coach at Texas Tech.

And, yes, UH has received your e-mails and read your posts: You want Leach to be the Warriors’ offensive coordinator.

There are natural ties. Leach hired Greg McMackin as Tech’s defensive coordinator in 2000. Mike Smith, who played at Tech, was a UH grad assistant the past season.

And Leach runs a four-wide offense that shares the same DNA as UH’s offense.

But Leach is not coming here. No money. No  opening. His forthcoming law suit. And, of course, UH’s offense is starting to click. Rolo is one of the bright, young minds of offensive football. His experience in 2009 will make him a better play-caller in 2010.

We’re proud of all of Hawai‘i’s Sons — the ones who stay or go away — but we have special appreciation for defensive tackle Ryan “The Beast” Eastman because we consider him to be part of our blog family.

According to proud papa Bulla, The Beast has secured a release from Weber State and is ready to compete for the Warriors. There’s paperwork to be filled and a tryout to attend, but we’re hopeful he will successfully fulfill his dream of playing for the hometown team.

Bulla writes:

“Ryan knows that he is a walk on and he just wants a chance to play at a higher level and compete with the other Warriors.  He will have to redshirt this year and start from the bottom. But he gets to train, work out, learn the system, and play on the Scout team , which he wants to do because he gets to work out against the 1st string O linemen.  he loves the challenge, and i love his statement, ‘Dad, it’s time … ‘”

Indeed, it is. Welcome home.

Then he got Rich to open it up.
He did everything but the mic check.
Oh, wait. He did do the mic check.

  16. Stephen Tsai December 30, 2009 12:40 am

By the way, I want to thank all of you for being supportive of Bulla.
I’ve known him since college, and he’s a great guy. Emotional? Sure. But a good guy.

  17. Stephen Tsai December 30, 2009 12:42 am

Forgot to give special thanks to Princess Leila for securing the Charlie Wade chat.
It turned out to be perfect timing because UH opened double days yesterday.

did the techies fix the video, all I got was a still picture and intermittent sound. Unable to follow the question and answer. I would at least want to hear the audio.

  19. Stephen Tsai December 30, 2009 12:56 am

The best thing to do is to contact Sandee Oshiro or Scott Morifuiji to find solutions to your video concerns. Call the main switchboard at 525-8000, and Dana will transfer your call.

  20. RainbowCliff December 30, 2009 1:28 am

Mr. Bulla, can you post for me your shirt size as well as your son “The Beast” size as I have a special gift to send to the both of you on his quest to be a Warrior Football Player.

I have been reading the many posts on your “OUTSTANDING” son who has a GREAT following on this blog with the many Tsaiko supporters who just adore you and respect your son’s ability to contribute to the Warrior football team.

As a former athlete to the University I know personally the theme of “against all odds” as certainly Ryan will have that situation to him being a walk on against the highly publicize scholarship players BUT his confidence is “INSPIRING” and your LOVE for him as a proud dad is “JOY TO THE HEART” as I want to contribute in my way of support to you and his journey of being a Warrior Football Player for 2010 !

Please post both your shirt sizes and address as I will be in and out all day today BUT will get to the blog at some time through out the day. I have “WONDERFUL” supporters to my cause and the gift n kind that I will be sending to both of you will be “FIRST CLASS” all the way !

I am moved by my Mother passing as I am “INSPIRED” to be even GREATER to you folks for 2010 as my LOVE for Tsaiko Nation will be “STRONGER” then it has ever been before !

Mahalo kind sir for just taking the time to read my request and CONGRATULATIONS for being a GREAT Father who has a TERRIFIC athletic son who is coming home to the “OHANA” in which one day I will meet the both of you and rejoice in cheer and laughter.

Vaya Con Dios and Hauloi Makahiki Hou !

  21. ai-eee-soos December 30, 2009 1:28 am

    Welcome home, Ryan.

During your redshirt year , give em HELL !!!

  22. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc December 30, 2009 1:56 am

I remember meeting Ryan just before he went off to Weber State and was surprised at two different things – his gentleness & friendly shyness and his drive. Clearly his playing name did not extend to his real world.

It will be interesting to see where he’ll be in the fall of 2013 – after he graduates and he’s used his remaining eligibility.

i assume that he’ll be attending UH spring semester. I’m curious – does he still maintain his residency status or is he considered an out-of-stater because he went to college out of state?

Did you know that until 1970 a woman student at UH took her residency from either her husband or her father is she were under the age of 20 – legal age back then? Only if a woman were fully emanicipated could she be a resident of the state of Hawaii on her own behalf for tuition purposes. For example, if a local girl married a member of the military who claimed residency elsewhere, she would lose her residency status – even if she didn’t go there even to visit her in-laws.

POMAI: What conclusions about men’s basketball did you all reach yesterday over a six-hour lunch? What kinds of ideas did you come up for UH football’s coaching staff – especially the head guy. It was frustrating seeing Amis, Thompson, and Flemings sitting on the bench in street clothes. The last two will be back this Saturday, but still…..

  23. Pomai December 30, 2009 4:15 am

WassupDoc conclusion was they are not so good and as much as everyone likes coach Nash, don’t think he’s the answer. Other than that not much, too much food.

  24. Bulla December 30, 2009 4:27 am

    good morning Tsaikos,

mahalo for the support for The Beast, his dream has always been to be a Warrior. He is excited to come home and compete to walk on to UH.

These past 2 years he has been blessed to play for Weber State and Coach McBride, but the time has come to ‘play at the next level’. how many of us have the opportunity to live our dream, to grab the proverbial brass ring, to do what we always wanted to do…………how many??

we are humbled by the support and the aloha from everyone, let us all support the green and black Warriors…GO WARRIORS

  25. DoubleB December 30, 2009 4:29 am

Go, Ryan, Go… Can Do 🙂

  26. XxFaithxX December 30, 2009 4:40 am

Congratulations Ryan!!! Makes my heart cry when I can “feel” the love that an island son has for his home and university.

We do not know each other and, yes, I know I can seem anti-mainland (ironic that I am here to live and work now…after I graduated from UH, mind you), but Thank You. Thank you for raising a son that dreams of playing for UH and will aspire to live that dream and even incur some hardship in order to fulfill dream. Me and my wife will cheer hard for Ryan and as my son grows up, I will point out too him that your son did what his heart told him too, not what others have.

  34. d1島 December 30, 2009 6:13 am

Interesting read this morning by “Ferd”

B$-You has one other advantage going for them after earning the fruits of success from their football program…can’t help but think that the $8M can go a lot farther in Boise, ID than here.
Imagine how much building four levels of luxury boxes at Aloha Stadium would cost!

  35. whitey December 30, 2009 6:14 am

bulla, good to see that it is now official. as always, my best to Ryan and tell him that the Maui gang sends their love and best.

  36. whitey December 30, 2009 6:15 am

d1, you one fast bugga. I read Ferd’s article and was going to say something and I look an you already get something on.

  37. d1島 December 30, 2009 6:18 am

  38. d1島 December 30, 2009 6:19 am

    Had to try that…. 😈

  39. whitey December 30, 2009 6:19 am

Ferd’s article is very good about how money can direct a program and how it can make them get ahead, but the one thing that is neva sure is “who will win”. The old saying of “that is why we play the game” is so very true. IF, IF, we start the season off with a HUGE, HUGE upset, who knows where it might lead to.

  40. whitey December 30, 2009 6:20 am

    d1, enjoy your day.

  41. d1島 December 30, 2009 6:22 am

    You too, whitey.

  42. Da Punchbowl Kid December 30, 2009 7:24 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂 🙂 🙂

    Bulla. Emotional?! Really?! 😆

Seriously, this is excellent news for father and son, who both bleed green and black. Ryan is going to be a tremendous asset for the Warriors, and we know that he backs his heart up with the hard work that is needed to be a great competitor. Watching Ryan’s efforts out over the next few years is going to be a lot of fun to watch.

  43. Bulla December 30, 2009 7:26 am

dpk….you just missed one of the best taiga series in “tenchijin” which concluded tonight. this the series based on historical events of the warring era of japan.

I have been following Tenchijin off and on. That last episode was epic. I also enjoyed the travelogue at the end which showed the historical sites associated with the story. Very cool stuff.

  45. TYaiea December 30, 2009 7:42 am

Aloha, “Bulla and the Beast” this is a feel good story during the dead period. Good Luck to Ryan. Go Warriors….

  46. haka December 30, 2009 7:44 am

    Congratulations Ryan!
You have been a Warrior all your life. Following your heart will make your dreams come true. There is no better feeling as a fan than to have one of it’s own show his pride and desire to play for the home team. Your Warrior ohana is proud of you wherever you go in life, but hearts will swell and eyes will tear when you run out on the field for the first time. Chants of “BEAST” will echo through the stadium! You have been a Warrior all your life…it’s time!

  47. I Love Pecan Pie December 30, 2009 8:10 am

    wow…2x and 4x size t-shirts…
so if the beast beats the pants off the regular
O line in practice, what is to prevent the coach
from putting him on the first team wiki-wiki rather
    than waiting a year?

  48. oldie December 30, 2009 8:14 am

    Morning Tsaikos!

As I said in an earlier post, I only know Bulla and the Beast through this blog and the Advertiser articles.

Bulla has always acted as any parent would, proud and protective of his son. And while Bulla’s anxiety almost got the better of him, Ryan remained calm and focused. It really shows his character. He will be a great addition to the Warrior team.

  49. jojo ® December 30, 2009 8:17 am

  53. Kaimuki Kid December 30, 2009 8:26 am

  54. Garret December 30, 2009 8:29 am

    I Love Pecan Pie,

As a transfer, Ryan cannot play in games for UH for a year.

  55. Garret December 30, 2009 8:32 am

I think that it is great that The Beast will be playing for the Warriors! Congratulations to the Warriors for getting a dedicated player who I think can be a big help for their D, and I’m happy that Bulla won’t have to fly all over the country to see him play.

  56. J-Dog December 30, 2009 8:39 am

Welcome home and good luck to “the beast”.

Always thought we missed out on him when I saw him play against UH in ’08.

  57. mctruck December 30, 2009 8:41 am

I still see the Beast as another Reagan Mauia in the back field as a blocking back. Give him the ball on short yardage?…but that getting ahead of the task at hand get into school 1st. Good luck Ryan.

  58. RedZone December 30, 2009 8:44 am

    Tale as old as time
    True as it can be
    Definitely friends
    Then somebody bends

    Just a little change
    Small to say the least
    One a little scared
    Only one prepared
    Bulla and the Beast

    Ever just the same
    Ever a surprise
    Ever as before
    Ever just as sure
    That the Son will rise

    Tale as old as time
    Tune as old as song
    Bittersweet and strange
    Finding you can change
    Learning you were wrong.

    Certain as the son
    Rising as the Beast
    Tale as old as time
    Song as old as rhyme
    Bulla and the Beast

    Tale as old as time
    Song as old as rhyme
    Bulla and the Beast.

  63. PONO December 30, 2009 8:59 am

Don’t mean to be negative but I where did “Da Beast” get his nickname? Seems funny that we refer to a walk on non scholarship player as a beast.

  64. al December 30, 2009 9:03 am

hey whitey…you getting real good at this stuff. somebody like celine could sing that.

  65. Derbs December 30, 2009 9:04 am

  66. Bigislandkurt December 30, 2009 9:18 am

Bulla — Right on bro. YOu one good fada. Taking the “good bradduh” road is a noble task.

Beast — Welcome home bro. Now come and do your thing. Know that your day will come. Stay healthy brotha.

  67. tommui December 30, 2009 9:22 am

Too good Bulla! Best to Ryan and the Eastman ohana.

  68. d1島 December 30, 2009 9:28 am

Bulla coined it back in his days at SLS where he was “beasting” O-linemen.

True, coming up next for him is the road of a non-schollie walk-on but it would be unfair not to note that he leaves behind a full-ride at Weber St.; Big Sky conference honors for the past two seasons as well as (at least one that I can recall) Defensive POW recognition; and probably pre-season conference, if not national, all-star recognition and almost certainly a captain’s roll for the Wildcats.

….all to pursue his life-long dream to play in the Green and White in front of you, me, the rest of the Warrior faithful, his friends and family and especially his adoring Dad.

  69. d1島 December 30, 2009 9:39 am

  74. 808Chef December 30, 2009 10:05 am

All I know is we need more guys like Beast on the team. We also know that he wouldn’t be the man that he is without great family like Bulla and Ms. Bulla backing him and supporting him.

(Sorry…don’t know if Ms. Bulla has a nickname.)

Great to have someone like you Ryan…welcome home and kick some okole!

Hey…RainbowCliff…I’ll buy a Beast shirt if you’re selling them.

  75. madeinhawaii December 30, 2009 10:18 am

    YAY to the BEAST!

The Beast represents more than one player.
The Beast represents all players that had to go the more circuitous route to get to D1 football.
The Beast represents those that had to go away but in fulfilling the goals set before them, found their way back.
If the Beast can lead the way back for others, how big is that?

  76. madeinhawaii December 30, 2009 10:25 am

    All ye people get ready..
    The Beast is coming..
    He’s running all cylinders
    Just to make the play

    Have pity on those
    Whose chances are bitter
    Bloodied and bull-dozed
    On the field as litter

    Ooooh ooooo…..
    Oooo ooooo…

    He’ll open the doors
And let the others pour in
    All they need is faith
    And they’re on their way

    Ooooh ooooo…..
    Oooo ooooo…

So, all ye people get ready..
    The Beast is coming..
    He’s running all cylinders
    Just to make the play

  77. Slugger December 30, 2009 10:26 am

    It’s a Good Morning!

Great news to hear that the Beast will be walking on to the Warrior team! I’ll be rooting for you. I’ll see you at practice, Ryan.

  78. protector December 30, 2009 10:31 am

Congrats to Bulla & family and to Warrior Nation! Welcome home, Ryan-I am impressed that you’ve chosen to forego a full ride and have chosen to take on a much more rocky road of financial hardship to fulfill your quest of playing for UH. This development really makes my day! I was jonesing for some good news during the dead period & here it is.

I anxiously await the coming of the Beast Warrior / Warrior Beast!

    Leach at UH?

Like the saying goes, “That dawg don’t hunt.”

  84. madeinhawaii December 30, 2009 10:41 am

Too bad we’re out of scholies.. I bet there are a lot of head hunters looking at the TTech recruiting list and getting primed to hit the call button as soon as the dead period ends.

  85. NorthShoreFan December 30, 2009 10:53 am

    Aloha and Guud Morning Tsaiko’s!
2010 is looking very, very GUUD!
The gates have been opened and the chains removed. The BEAST is BACK! I was floored with the news that the BEAST will be a WARRIOR!
I say “will be” cause it seems no matter where or at what level he has accomplished.
With a whole bunch of Tsaiko’s who got his back, I see him kicking but on the field.
Bulla, MAHALO for bringing him home!
I can see a cheering section at practice now. Whoa! Sons of Hawaii coming back to the aina to represent the people!
All you Son’s of Hawaii who are being dazzled and recuited by big time programs, take heed and ask yourself, why not play for my people!
    2010 WARRIORS..shaping up!

  86. Stephen Tsai December 30, 2009 10:55 am

I don’t know if UH is actually out of scholarships .
I believe it’s holding some for prospects.

  87. A-House December 30, 2009 11:04 am

Will Scott Smith, former SLHS grad, be coming home too? Did he play with the “Beast” or is Ryan to young?

Bet family would be happy to see him in Warrior green, white, and black.

  88. madeinhawaii December 30, 2009 11:34 am

I thought Scott Smith wasn’t interested in playing at Hawaii? Didn’t he opt to go to California, originally?

  89. madeinhawaii December 30, 2009 11:36 am

Will be interesting to see who th(os)e ‘prospect(s)’ turn out to be.

  90. InLV December 30, 2009 11:39 am

So THAT is why Corey Neilsen chose UH…Im sorry, all I could think of was Kiffen and player hostesses after seeing that pic.

It looks like the Texas Tech fans are pretty pissed. Check out this spoof video on YouTube. I thought it was funny but it got LOL funny around the 2:55 mark….

  92. RainbowCliff December 30, 2009 11:54 am

Aloha 808Chef, I don’t have a specific design line of shirts for Mr. Bulla and his son as my major support athletic foundations will be doing the gift n kind. Through the Al Wooten Center I have been able to develop a large contingent of programs who supports my cause for the unfortunate and disadvantage children of South Central Los Angeles.

These caring foundations are linked to professional sport franchises, entertainment industry, corporate america and ABC World News. I have been blessed over the years to establish strong relationships with them as their executive branch believes in the work that I do for my children
of South Central Los Angeles. My website of http://www.wootenalbum.org will have all the detail information of my dedicated work to the profession.

Mahalo 808 Chef for your inquiring mind and good intentions.

Yikes! The Idaho QB is 1/6 in passing for 3 yards. At least it is still tied 7-7.

  94. Mike December 30, 2009 11:57 am

Whaddya mean no opening for Leach? Fire da kine Ron Lee. Make an opening, Mack needs to dig deep and be a little creative if he wants to win some games for a change.

Not all UH football fans are ignorant, mediocrity will not be tolerated.

  95. Bulla December 30, 2009 11:58 am

In the 2006 Season, Scott Smith and Solomona Aigaumaua (Cal) were the D Ends, and Geordon Hanohano and The Beast were the DT’s….now they…..were The 4 Horsemen! 🙂

Bulla – I’m so happy for you and Ryan and your family! I’m glad I have time to save up so I can watch some of his home games… Maybe I’ll even be able to see him beat BS-Who in Boise in 3 years!

  97. Ronnie December 30, 2009 12:04 pm

    Hi RainbowCliff!

I noticed that The Al Wooten Center was one of the beneficiaries of the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas Concert. My youngest son went to the Sunday show. He got to see his favorite band, have “the best night” of his life, and help a worthy center! Can’t ask for more than that! 🙂

  98. Bulla December 30, 2009 12:06 pm

    to everyone who has posted,

mahalo for your kind words for our ohana, we are humbled.

we are just grateful for the blessings, and Ryan realizes he is on the very bottom of the totem pole. knowing that, he welcomes the opportunity to work out, train, run, and practice with all of the other Warriors that are currently in Manoa if he does well at the tryout. Ryan is just one guy, a Crusader at heart, who just wants to do anything he can to help the team in any capacity. For him to just have the chance to wear the Green and Black, is something he does not take for granted. but mahalo for the kind words…….

I’m assuming that these are players that have already been offered. So, unless they decide to go elsewhere, we really don’t have any scholies left that are free and clear for a prospect that may suddenly surface.

In that vein, it ain’t easy recruiting and managing your scholarship allotment. You want the kids to make the best decision for their future, yet at the same time, you the coaches to maximize their scholarship offerings.

I’m a little late to the party but… Just wanted to drop my best wishes and congratulations to the Eastman family. Rejoicing at the arrival/return of “The Beast” and can’t wait to see him in action on the field!

  108. expat December 30, 2009 1:30 pm

Capitol -ist/WassupDoc: you can’t lose your residency status just by leaving to go to school. Of course, you have to not have established residency elsewhere. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the kind folks at the tuition office aren’t going to make a fuss about it.

Bulla, congratulations to Ryan for having the guts to pursue his dream. He will be a valuable addition to the team.

As far as the (non-)possibility of Leach coming to UH in some capacity… why would we want him? He would not stick around for long. With his success as a HC in a BCS conference some school or the pros would poach him within a year and it would be back to the drawing board. He would be gone before anything could be properly implemented. It is nuts to even think about it. Ron Lee has been in the Run & Shoot for a very long time and knows it. Rolo has had success in the system and is proving himself very capable. Maybe RL is the not the visionary that JJ is, but he has the smarts to develop the game plan. More to the point I think we can all see that developing and refining a sophisticated offensive scheme like the R&S does not happen overnight. RL and Rolo are not likely to be headed anywhere else soon and both have strong ties to the school. There is an advantage in that I think.

Well I heard that we did in fact let go of Ron Lee and are in talks with Coach Leach for the O-Coordinator job. I am super excited about this news and his ability to bring that potent Air-Raid offense to UH.

Honestly when we talk about JJ being one of the select few who can run an offense with so much brass, Leach belongs in the other “few” group.

It’ll be interesting to see how negotiations and the money factor is balanced.

And off course if you are still reading this and believe every word of it, bless your heart.

But honestly it would be so awesome if we could get Leach to come to UH. Yes yes Rolovich is making improvements with the offense but (speaking PURELY hypothetically) if we did have a chance for Leach as OC AND had the money you gotta take him…

Anyone know the key difference between an Air-Raid and Run ‘n Shoot? I know in so much as they do have a few more running schemes outside what we do and run a 5-wide sometimes.

    You must be kidding!?

  158. whitey December 30, 2009 4:52 pm

If grades make you a long shot for college, you’re much more likely to get a break if you can play ball.

Texas was one of seven schools that reported no use of special admissions, instead describing “holistic” standards that consider each applicant individually rather than relying on minimum test scores and grade-point averages.

But the school also acknowledged in its NCAA report that athletic recruits overall are less prepared. At Texas, the average SAT score for a freshman football player from 2003 to 2005 was 945 — or 320 points lower than the typical first-year student’s score on the entrance exam.

  159. whitey December 30, 2009 4:54 pm

At Alabama, 19 football players got in as part of a special admissions program from 2004 to 2006, the most recent years available in the NCAA report. The school tightened its standards for “special admits” in both 2004 and 2007, but from 2004 through 2006, Crimson Tide athletes were still more than 43 times more likely to benefit from such exemptions.

Alabama coach Nick Saban offered no apologies.

  160. whitey December 30, 2009 5:03 pm

Gerald Gurney, incoming president of the National Association of Academic Advisers for Athletics, favors a return by the NCAA to the minimum test score requirement abandoned several years ago. He said the NCAA’s “virtually open admissions standards” threaten academic integrity.

“Special admissions, in and of itself, isn’t something to be ashamed of. It does add value to a university,” said Gurney, senior associate athletic director for academics and student life at Oklahoma. “However, when you have students who need such a great deal of remediation, it jeopardizes the very essence of the university.”

  161. whitey December 30, 2009 5:03 pm

The AP review also identified eight schools where athletes were no more likely than other students to get a break with special admissions: Arizona State, Arkansas State, Boise State, Iowa, Kent State, Mississippi State, New Mexico and West Virginia.

  162. Hank December 30, 2009 5:03 pm

Congratulations to Ryan and his Dad…it’ll be exciting to watch his progress…

  165. OldDiver December 30, 2009 5:13 pm

The thought of bringing Mike Leach here is silly. Leach was winning because Tech has a huge sports budget, facilities to die for, endless perks for athletes, located in Texas and alumni with deep pockets. Winning with x’s and o’s is great when you have even teams like in pop warner. Modern college football in general is a game of who has the most money, and who is willing to skirt the rules.

  166. Richie December 30, 2009 5:22 pm

Congratulations to THE BEAST and to Bulla. This is great news!

Has his former SLHS teammate, Scott Smith, made any commitments anywhere? With Jacob Barit competing at middle linebacker and Geordean Hanohano on the D-Line, we will have a little reunion of the Crusaders of a couple of years ago. Kamalu Umu is also a very good player from the class before. Their rival from Kahuku, Kaniela Tuipulotu, will certainly be a great one. When does spring practice start?

  167. Hank December 30, 2009 5:23 pm

…it’s not surprising to me that the son of Craig James is involved in this….

personally, i’m not a fan of his because of his arrogant style of sports commentary…being at SMU just before they got the death penalty as well…there’s a dark shadow that follows this dude.

We should hire this coach – of course he was accused of kicking one of this players and abusing others – opps, sorry, it was a woman’s basketball coach I was thinking of …

I really don’t care if a football player was a primadona but if he was hurt – slight concussion or major one – if story is correct that he was locked in storage or electrical storage closet – I don’t think such a coach should be hired, let alone considered.

Or is it that he is a winning coach and that makes all the difference in the world?

  173. whitey December 30, 2009 6:01 pm

Counselor Tom, at #156, there is a most interesting post about what this “electrical room” is like. This is the same room that is used to interview coaches. Not going get into this more, but this is a case where three sides may come out the loser, TT, James, and Leach.

  174. whitey December 30, 2009 6:03 pm

TT had a mbb coach who had a worse record as far as athlete abuse, but the school neva did anything to him. Why, I really don’t know, but he is a winning coach. So, did TT do wrong by keeping hiim till he retired???

  175. chawan_cut December 30, 2009 6:05 pm

    arizona looks bad.

  176. whitey December 30, 2009 6:06 pm

Most people who coach winning teams have basically no fear of consequences, but have tremendous belief in their ability to coach winners. Money is very important, but believing in themselves and their abilities is what makes them coach.

  184. JGM December 30, 2009 6:20 pm

    whitey, I agree.

But I have to say I am losing respect for ESPN. High profile coaches have been fired in the past without nearly this much coverage. And all their coverage seems to be very one sided. I figure there are always two sides to a story. I’m glad I searched the internet.

  185. whitey December 30, 2009 7:17 pm

  186. whitey December 30, 2009 7:20 pm

it has been fun posting the last few days since this is truly a dead week as far as recruiting, but it is a highlight week for college fb. right now, the pac-10 is getting runned over by everyone and hope the ducks can salvage sumthing for them. the 2 underdogs, cincy and boise, i am cheering for them because they play UH and look forward to seeing us in action against them.

  187. whitey December 30, 2009 7:22 pm

as far as me predicting bowl winners, i am not very good, but i truly like the underdogs.

  188. whitey December 30, 2009 7:24 pm

sum are not too happy about boise, but give them their kudos. if they can knock tcu, there is a chance they could finish #2. this would be good for the WAC cause in all probability ESPN will show more WAC games, give the WAC huge exposure, and in turn help all the schools financially.

  189. whitey December 30, 2009 7:26 pm

thinking about it we could be playing 2 teams in the top 10 next season and who knows what the outcome will be. it would truly be sumthing if we win both games. hooooooo haaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

i am guessing that the last 4-5 scholarships will go to 3-4 star quality players. it is now a matter of time as to who verbals first.

there is a pecking order but soon it will be a race to who commits first.

here’s hoping that we get that cornerback and that safety first. we sure could use the numbers in the defensive backfield.

    tweet, tweet.

  206. LOL® (I Love Coach Duff) December 30, 2009 8:37 pm

And, yes, UH has received your e-mails and read your posts: You want Leach to be the Warriors’ offensive coordinator.

That’s a good and funny one…. Mike Leach as offensive coordinator under Greg McMackin.

But Leach is not coming here. No money. No opening.

But you forgot the most important reason. Why would he want to work under his former defensive coordinator knowing what he knows? Leach “the mad scientist” might be a little off and eccentric, but he isn’t insane enough to do that.

And Texas Tech does not want anything to do with Greg McMackin according to one Red Raider fan…

No surprise there. Go ask any long time Red Raider fan about why he ended up out of coaching for a few years… teaching a class at Tech until JJ came calling after Glanville left for PSU.

  207. Derek December 30, 2009 8:40 pm

Corey Neilson, you da man! There is no way Mike Leach is going to come to Hawaii so forget about it. Recruiting priority. Number 1, we need a place kicker, a good one. Two, defense wins championships and we weren’t good the last 2 years. So, if UH is smart we need defensive linemen and pass rushers. Cornerbacks are also valuable.
But, I still feel we need a big back who can break tackles, somebody who is around 6’0 to 6’2 and about 225-240 w/ low center of gravity w/ about 4.6 speed. Anybody knows somebody who fits that mold? This kid from Calif. by the name of Vainuku seems to be pretty good from the clips I saw.

  208. madeinhawaii December 30, 2009 9:07 pm

Hmm… McMackin and I share the same B-day.

  209. madeinhawaii December 30, 2009 9:21 pm

The Texas Tech vs Leach issue looks to get uglier before it’s all resolved.

  210. NYUH December 30, 2009 9:57 pm

    LOL®: You got nothing.
Derek: Sounds like Jake Huen, wasn’t he supposed to be that RB?

Belated congrats to the Bullas. I’m sure Ryan will add to the long legacy of walk-ons who made a big impact on the program.

Oh, and just to clarify, that was a different Mike who posted the thing about firing Ron Lee earlier today. Seriously.

In case you didn’t watch the game either in person or on K5, the Wahine pounded poi again tonight. Behind as much as 10 points in the first half of the first half, they played back to a tie and then kept the kent State from taking the lead until the last couple of minutes – and then pulled it off by winning by 3.

Coach Dana has instilled the Never Give Up ethic in the team. Maybe all the student-athletes playing for UH in all the other sports might take a lesson or two from the women.

Na Wahine return to the Stan Sheriff Center on January 13. It would be really nice if 1,000 fans showed up to support the team.

  215. expat December 30, 2009 10:29 pm

LOL: I am not clear on what you are talking about with McMackin and Texas Tech. I must be missing something. After his stint at TT McMackin coached for the 49ers when Erickson was there. He was, of course, also Erickson’s DC at Seattle and at Miami. He took a brief hiatus from coaching before coming back to the Warriors, but so what?

  216. madeinhawaii December 30, 2009 10:34 pm

must be the same number as our b-day, then…. 424

  217. madeinhawaii December 30, 2009 10:41 pm

If I remember correctly, Coach Mack was also voted one of the nation’s top coaches while at Texas Tech. Then he went to the 49’s for a few years. Then in 2007 he went back to TT to teach for one semester. If TT thought so badly of him, why would they hire him as an instructor? Then in the second half of 2007, he came back to Hawaii.

1400+ recorded as wbb attendance tonight. very good. E Bolla year the Na Wahine got only about 200.

  221. madeinhawaii December 30, 2009 11:09 pm

The only thing that bothered me about the Na Wahine game today was the final score. Wahine truly dominated the boards tonight but the final score didn’t reflect that.

But tonight’s effort was a team effort. And that will pay dividends down the road.

  222. Ralph December 30, 2009 11:15 pm

Duffer but i didn’t give the score!

  223. Ralph December 30, 2009 11:19 pm

MIH they need to improve their shot selection, on sets the shooters got to allow their teammates to be in position to rebound. they won the rebound stat tonight but it maybe more a problem with Kent St. than technique and floor position.

Quiet time now. Not so exactly 2 years ago as we waited for New Year’s Eve and the Sugar Bowl on New Year’s day. Feel like some nostalgia? Here’s the trek of LizKauai and Kekoa back in the days before before her blog and FaceBook (Liz emailed me her pix from New Orleans and I used her live blog posts)…

Then the concurrent Tsai-kos in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl with pix contributed from multiple sources…

    Happy New Year, everyone!

i am sure that every coach is just chomping at the bit in anticipation of jan. 2nd.

critical is the order importance as each coach prepares their home visits, follow up visits, and official visits as they aproach the stretch run of the all important recruiting process.

hopefully each week will bring the announcement of another future warrior to the fold.

this is going to be fun.

  228. LizKauai [iMac] Happy New Year! December 31, 2009 12:19 am

I am going to check on the # of tickets sold v. the number who had their tickets scanned because there certainly were not 1,444 people in the Stan Sheriff Center tonight. The upper section was closed off and I only counted about 300 in the two end zones – not counting the band – and our area above the two benches. Across the way, there were maybe another 250 or so.

That many tickets sold is fine, but the team deserves to have our support in person as well.

Na Wahine cleared the boards again & again and made some really solid plays, but the spirit is what I noticed above all.

Don’t forget – the guys kick off the WAC season this Saturday against Idaho.

    Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana,

Funny how the McMackin haters twist even the Mike Leach debacle into an attack on Mack.

While Mack was at Texas Tech, he was recognized for being a great recruiter. He left Texas Tech for better paying jobs at the pro level, and did a great job as a coach of pro defenses.

Idaho showed today the value of giving a coach time to get his staff and system in place and to develop the athletes needed to make the system work.

I think that we are going to turn the corner next year, the way that Idaho turned the corner this year. To me the best sign is that our guys worked hard and never gave up this year, even when they were getting clobbered. That is a sign to me that they had not lost faith in the coaches or their team mates.

Our coaches overcame great adversity the last two years. They showed that they could develop three quarterbacks who can run the R&S with success. The offense showed flashes of being what they had been in the glory years of Colt; they also showed that they were still a work in progress at other times. The defense really struggled, but rose to the occaison for the Navy game. I find great hope in all of that.

Finally, the idea that the UH football coaching job is some wonderful opportunity that Mainland coaches are despreately seeking is deluded.

The people who have made Hawaii teams competitors are guys like Dave Shoji, Vince Goo, Les Murakami, and Riley Wallace, coaches who love and understand Hawaii and wanted to stay here. Mack fits right in with them. He deserves the chance to build the program without all this hostile demand for instant gratification.

    Thanks for opportunity to vent!

Go Vandals!! Go Warriors!! Go Bows!!

  234. Pomai December 31, 2009 1:53 am

    Very good post Lopaka43

  235. protector December 31, 2009 3:24 am

Aside from the character & economic issues which would preclude Leach’s hiring, some forget that UH’s Offense is qualitatively different from Texas Tech’s. Installing that version would not be a minor thing to be implemented during the off-season. I’m sure it would delight the true haters & bashers as it would sabotage, if not derail, the progress that the Offense has been making. To ask the QBs & receivers (who are just getting comfortable to our system) to adjust to a different one is just ludicrous & unjustifiable. It would truly stymy point production and the haters know that Leach wouldn’t get the blame; it would go right back to Coach Mack so that the haters can repeat their idiotic mantra. No such luck. As this team solidifies, Coach Mack will have the last laugh.

Ryan: Your gift on the field will now shine even more with the Warriors. Bulla’s right, its time for you to be at the next level. So……let the real games begin!!!!
