TE seeks to join Warriors

Speak of the Blue Devils.

Ryan Hall, a reserve tight end for Duke the past three years, is seeking to join the Warriors.

Hall is trying to follow the path of  a former Blue Devil teammate. Quarterback Sean Schroeder earned a bachelor’s degree — a requirement for transferring without having to sit out a year — was accepted to UH two weeks ago, and will compete for a starting job with the Warriors.

Hall also has earned a bachelor’s degree.

Hall enrolled at Duke in the spring of 2009. He did not get into any games in 2009 or 2010. He was a reserve in 2011.

If he is admitted into UH, Hall would have two years of eligibility.

Darius Bright and Craig Cofer are considered the Warriors’ No 1 tight ends.

UH president Greenwood sent this to the school’s “‘ohana”:

Dear University of Hawai’i ‘Ohana, Colleagues, and Friends,

I am writing to you today to update you about the Stevie Wonder concert. I want to assure you on behalf of your university that we are doing everything we can to understand the facts and circumstances regarding this regrettable situation. Unfortunately, the university may have been the victim of fraud. We have referred this matter to the FBI and are fully cooperating with their investigation.

The Board of Regents and I have also initiated a thorough internal investigation of this matter, which will be reported directly to the Chair of the Board of Regents’ Committee on University Audits and myself.

To discover all the facts will take time. In the meantime, we urge you not to prejudge the university or any individuals with respect to roles, responsibilities, and actions. We have taken swift action to refund ticket holders, and 98 percent of refunds have been processed. Our student athletes and our fans are of the utmost concern. The Board of Regents and I fully support the efforts of our new Chancellor Tom Apple as he oversees Manoa athletics.

There has been broad coverage in the media, some of it inaccurate, with statements attributed to anonymous sources. Please know that many of these statements are at best speculation and at worst falsehoods, by people both not authorized to speak on behalf of the university and without firsthand knowledge. Any statement not made by Chancellor Apple or the university’s designated spokesperson should be viewed with great caution.

Please remember that the university was a victim here. Although mistakes may have been made, we will do our absolute best to try to prevent something like this from ever happening again. We will not let this deter us from moving forward with the mission of the University of Hawai’i. We have many exciting stories and successes at the university, and we should not let the current situation overshadow these. Thank you for your support.

With Aloha,

M.R.C. Greenwood

We need a pipeline to SEC-types – but again, maybe they never ever get their degrees!

I’m wondering?? how does “reserve”.. hardly any playing experience, from mediocre program=helping UH??..or are they superior to what UH has already?

  12. mctruck July 14, 2012 4:23 am

Of course, if he’s also a punter….then that may help?

  13. mctruck July 14, 2012 4:34 am

tom….I tink Duke is an ACC team…..o.k. den, time 4breakfast.

    Have a great day everyone!!

    No special account.

  15. Supastoke July 14, 2012 4:47 am

Any Relation to the Last great TE ever played in a Rainbow Uniform…RON HALL?

  16. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2012 4:47 am

    Supastoke:

    Good question.

I don’t have the answer. But he is from Orlando. I think the late great Ron Hall played for Tampa Bay, right?

  17. Garret July 14, 2012 4:57 am

Welcome to all smart, talented football players who wish to walk on that Coach Chow and his staff feel have a chance to contribute! I’m assuming that he’s looking to walk on and he already demonstrated that he’s responsible in the classroom, so Ryan Hall sounds promising.

  18. Garret July 14, 2012 4:57 am

This profile of Ryan Hall has some videos of him

  19. Garret July 14, 2012 4:58 am

Scout had Ryan Hall as a 3-star TE in 2009, with Duke as the only school that offered him a scholarship:

    Right you are.

    Thank ST.

  21. Supastoke July 14, 2012 4:59 am

    Thank= Thanks.

  22. Garret July 14, 2012 5:00 am

Rivals also had him as a 3-star TE, with Duke as the only school that offered him an athletic scholarship. However, Harvard also offered him for their team…though that wouldn’t have been an athletic scholarship because I don’t think the Ivys give football scholarships.

  23. Garret July 14, 2012 5:01 am

Duke’s 2012 Spring Prospectus (written about 6 months ago) had Ryan Hall listed in the Letterman Lost category, so he had left the football team a long time ago.

    http://www.goduke.com/fls/4200/web-docs/Duke_2012%20Spring%20Prospectus.pdf

  24. Garret July 14, 2012 5:04 am

Ryan Hall’s bio says that he entered college early (enrolled at Duke in January 2009) and did not play in games in 2009 or 2010. It also answers Supastoke’s question:

Son of Laura and Jeff Hall

  25. Garret July 14, 2012 5:08 am

I’ve got to leave in a couple of minutes to take a test, but it was nice to look up some info for the blog…talented walk-ons that were at a school in one of the big 5 conferences is a good risk (nothing)/reward bet for UH. Especially when they are players like Ryan Hall who excel in the classroom, don’t get into any trouble off the field, and get praise for their hard work and practice habits…I don’t see much of a downside. It isn’t like UH has a deep roster of proven TEs anyway.

2011: Reserve tight end … showed marked improvement during spring drills … improved size and speed could pay dividends this fall

  26. Garret July 14, 2012 5:14 am

Air Force is in significant need of nonconference games now. Oklahoma State cancelled their home/home series with Air Force for 2015 and 2016, and the next day it appears that Cincy told Air Force they want to cancel their 2015 and 2017 home/home series.

If the cancellation does occur, Air Force will only have Army and Navy on their future schedules from 2014 forward.

  27. Moocher July 14, 2012 5:25 am

I think the young man will be fine. An athlete is one thing….a well coached athlete is another. Was Duke ever a strong football school? Nope. So is it because of the athletes or the coaches? From our experience with Von Appen to JJ…cut all the kids some slack from first string to reserves because they just weren’t coached up right.

JJ made players fit a system here and now, Chow is preparing them to play in the NFL. And that means here and now, as well as tomorrow to. He’ll get players to go beyond their personal bests and a reserve or anyone for that matter just might get something fired up inside to take things to the next level and beyond.

If you are on the team, expect to play.

Warrior Hall, welcome. Grab yourself a helmet and learn the ha’a. Embrace Hawaii’s culture, and it will embrace you 1000 fold.

    RYAN HALL

welcome Ryan Hall. Hope you come play for us.

    Go WarriorS!

  33. Hilo-Warrior July 14, 2012 6:31 am

Hey I got some pictures of Ray Hisatake from last nights game. How do I get it to you if you wanted to put them up?

  34. BigHiloFan2 July 14, 2012 6:33 am

your question will be answered shortly, bull. 😀

    aloha to you in Texas!

  35. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2012 6:52 am

    Nope. Not the mystery player.

  36. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2012 7:02 am

Hall sounds like a good student, having the size and ability of a tight end. Let’s see how far he goes in our system. Good luck and best wishes!

  37. Bryson July 14, 2012 7:08 am

Wow Bright and Cofer penciled in ahead of an All American JC TE….

  38. Manoa Mist July 14, 2012 7:17 am

Not sure how excited I can get about these players who were at another school and never played not even for a second. But I trust in Norm. Think he knows just a tiny bit more about football than me…lol.

  39. Manoa Mist July 14, 2012 7:18 am

It’s really nice to see gigi back on the blog. She brings another perspective then the rest of us know it all types.

  41. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2012 7:20 am

    huh?

  42. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2012 7:24 am

Just remember that von Appen blamed his winless record on his players. He called them Dinosaurs. He was fired. The following year, JJ was able to coach the same players to a championship.

I really believe that victory depends on the coaches.

  43. PolyMom July 14, 2012 7:28 am

ST…how we miss Ron Hall. He was a super nice guy. Loved when he played for Tampa Bay. He was just so kind to my son. I have many pics of Ron when he was a Buc. My son has a lifetime field pass from the former owners. I committed to Don Weir to pay for Ron’s name on the new UH Letter Winners Club display.

Still shocked about all this concert pilikia.

  44. BigWave96744 July 14, 2012 7:39 am

Shucks, the Duke punter just transferred to Texas and is eligible to play this fall.

On the bright side, these 2 guys may know a scout team point guard cut from the Duke Bball team and willing to transfer to play for Gib

  45. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2012 7:47 am

It’s a sign of the times when it’s big news when a coach says a basketball player is staying at UH.

  46. mctruck July 14, 2012 7:47 am

A lot of talk nowadays from sports critics/analysts saying based on more revelations of PSU’s sex scandle woes, that failure on those in charge should merit very harsh penalty’s, even NO more football program period. Eh, maybe more transfers for UH?

  47. lava July 14, 2012 7:48 am

I am already tired of hearing about TEs. QBs too for that matter. Do the coaches not have a clue as to the guys most likely to get the reps?

Graves is going to get a Brees complex.

  48. mctruck July 14, 2012 7:51 am

It just occured to me??….didn’t coach Chow earlier mention using some TE’s as mainly another blocking OL man? maybe???

  49. d1shima July 14, 2012 7:57 am

    Great Morning All!

WooHoo Top 25 CFB games of 2011 on the U! It ain’t live but it beats watching outdoorsman competitions!

  50. d1shima July 14, 2012 7:58 am

    Aloha Ryan Hall!

  51. d1shima July 14, 2012 8:00 am

Maybe Shoko is on to sumting (btw, wea sumtingwong?)….

Get summoa Duke-ys and get that Cameron Indoor stuff happening in the Stanley!

  52. d1shima July 14, 2012 8:02 am

    lava,

Another perspective is that the coaches know exactly what the situation is with regard to who would be taking reps if not for all the late recruiting. 😯

  53. d1shima July 14, 2012 8:07 am

    Moocher,

Not sure if the #1 goal is to get all the players ready for NFL careers but by all accounts Coach Chow does have a pretty complex system (sorry, there’s that word again) with which a lot of folks at the next level are accustomed.

…probably more than can be expected to be assimilated during 15 practices in one Spring.

  54. Slugger July 14, 2012 8:10 am

    Good morning, gang!

    GO WARRIORS!

  55. d1shima July 14, 2012 8:10 am

    mctruck,

Maybe not only for blocking…but depends on how the 5 OL can handle.

    (from the 9:00 mark) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpAiOJ0wtoo

  56. d1shima July 14, 2012 8:10 am

    Spider 3 Y Banana!

    😆

  57. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2012 8:12 am

The coaches do know who will get the most reps.

There is, after all, a revised depth chart.

  58. Stephen Tsai July 14, 2012 8:15 am

The original goal was to have a training-camp roster of 102, with no additions on the first day.

Now it looks like the final roster could go as high as 110. But that would be the absolute limit.

  59. Wes'side Warrior July 14, 2012 8:22 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Gameday for us out here in Georgia! Here’s a quick write-up on tonight’s game:

Will be heading out to set up for our tailgate at the Arena at Gwinnett in about 45 minutes. As a reminder, here’s the link to catch us on tv:

    http://www.ustream.tv/GeorgiaForce

Game starts tonight at 7pm, Eastern, (1pm Hawaii).

I think most of us have signs made. You guys will love it… especially the sign my kids will be holding! Hope the cameras catch us!

Looking forward to seeing Moniz and Mike Washington… REPRESENT!!!

  60. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2012 8:22 am

Hubby pointed out the column by Dave Shapiro: It’s too bad Stevie Wonder did not call UH to say “I love you.”

  61. papajoe2 July 14, 2012 8:26 am

It’s confirmed. He’s here! No, not Stevie. I saw wafan at the Waipio Costco last night. No sense rushing over to Costco today. I think he bought up the whole store.

    Good Morning Gangeez!

Hiya wafan! Good to have u home! When’s da cc?

  69. tom mui July 14, 2012 8:49 am

    #10 BHF2 – interesting, no?

I see CSF&W has been retained to investigate the Wonder blunder. The previous fees charged by the firm would be about 60%+ the amount UH lost.

Heck, you, WarriorMojo and I could have done it in tandem for less!

From what I read in the papers, the Wonder people want X+ amount of money for two concerts. As far as I know, UH only was going to have one concert. Just wondering who was going to profit from the Maui concert?

JD apparently was out of town when the “contract” was signed. I don’t know whether he was instrumental in this fiasco or not. I don’t know if he knew all of the facts or not.

Critics have pointed out that even if he was not in the loop, he was the Captain of the “Titanic-Wonder” and ultimately responsible. On the other hand, the papers points out that the “Admiral” of the “Titanic-Wonder” knew of the plans of the concert way before she got notice that there were problems. Question: is she also ultimately responsible?

Of course if some or all of the people in Upper Campus are somewhat responsible, will CSF&W make a finding to that effect? Will CSF&W ever get a contract from UH ever again?

    Stay tune for further developments!

  70. Da Punchbowl kid July 14, 2012 8:51 am

Bryant Moniz and the Georgia Force should be streaming on the Force website today at about 1:00PM if my scientifical time-zone difference calcumalationseses is correct.

  71. Old School Dave July 14, 2012 8:55 am

gigi #42: I think Guy Benjamin was one of the bright spots on VA’s staff as far a pretty good recruiter. I know that Dan Robinson spoke highly of him. He may have also brought in Jeff Ulbrich. Benjamin, I believe, is still living in Hawaii (I may be wrong).

BTW, I recently saw a video about Jeff Ulbrich and his new job as UCLA’s LBs coach. He should do well.

    #13 McTRUCK:

Yep – DUKE is in the ACC.

I was just wondering why we don’t get transfers from that from the ACC schools but I suspect it’s academics!

But don’t mistake me – I welcome RYAN HALL to the Warrior ranks!

  74. SteveM July 14, 2012 9:51 am

    Good morning everyone!

    RE: #69

tommui — thanks for fleshing out my ficticious Hawaii Five-0 plot outline from last night. Especially about a possible agenda of the “private investigators”. Ahhh, and the suspicious behavior at the top….way too exaggerated. Any more plot suggestions?

I think there might be a lunch cattle call with wafan next week instigated by jm2375. I think she is finalizing things yet.

  75. Article Directory July 14, 2012 9:58 am

UXPTbZ Very good blog.Really looking forward to read more. Will read on…

  76. Derek July 14, 2012 10:00 am

What’s with all the Dukies! Last I checked, Duke was at the bottom of the barrel in the ACC so should we get excited about the last 2 to join our Warriors? Let’s look at the positives. The ACC league is a lot better than the Mountain West, top to bottom. I would say Duke is better than UNLV, New Mexico, and probably Colorado St. and Wyoming. They would be underdogs against Air Force, SD St., TCU, and Boise St. based on last year’s Mountain West. Hall and Schroeder graduated already so the conclusion is that these guys are smart guys who work hard in the classroom and on the field. That means they probably doesn’t make stupid mistakes and penalties such has personal fouls and the like.

The question is athletic ability and making plays. These 2 guys haven’t had a lot of playing time so they are untested, yet grown mature men. Okay. Let’s give them a chance.

  77. Drema Draghi July 14, 2012 10:03 am

The ’61 Pontiac has to be one of my favorites for the period. I’d love to have a Catalina bubbletop like this one, even if it only had a 389/2bbl.

  79. el burro sabio July 14, 2012 10:32 am

I finally figured it out. Schroeder and Hall are being welcomed in by coach to improve the team – the team GPA.

  80. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2012 10:33 am

I agree with Derek. Let’s give the Duke guys a chance before forming an opinion.

  81. jm2375 July 14, 2012 10:38 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    First the good news:

What: Cattle Call in honor of wafan’s annual visit home

    When: Thursday, July 19th

    Time: High noon

Where: Maple Garden (if you don’t know where it is, den you not a Tsaiko! j/k)

RSVP on blog or email joanne2375 at gmail, just so I know how many tables we’ll need.

Clueless wahine’s opinion: UH got scammed. I’d hate to see JD lose his job over this one issue. What the Fumbler did was waaaaay worse and we are still paying for it 4 years later.

  82. Da Punchbowl kid July 14, 2012 10:49 am

Welcome to both of the Duke boys! I hope Schroeder has thrown a lot of practice passes to Hall in their Duke days. Chemistry…

  85. gigi-hawaii July 14, 2012 11:56 am

OSDave: I didn’t know Jeff Ulbrich is now coaching at UCLA. What a feather in his cap! I think he’ll do well there. He’s one of those steady, dependable types that I like so much.

So we get a reserve tight end from Duke but a couple of days ago their starter broke a knee cap and had surgery. I wonder if they are going to want him back? Cutliff said he is friends with Norm but he still thinks we are the Rainbows.

Don’t know where Hall hails from but if he’s from California it seems very reasonable coming to Hawaii. I know Schroeder is from California so that makes sense too. The guys that I really admire are the DBs Jackson and Phillips from Florida (who are freshmen) and people like Mike Edwards and J.T. Turner from Ohio and anybody else from the midwest and eastern part of the mainland. It’s a long way to come to play for the Univ. of Hawaii. Thank you guys! Let’s treat them like one of our own and show them the aloha and the gratitude for wanting to be Warriors. For that matter, anybody who wants to play for us, especially the home blue chippers.

    RE: President’s Message

Sheesh… sounds like the UH just lost $200 million and might have to shut down soon. What was a flubbed fund raising attempt is now a major disaster. Call in 5-0.

…Oh, I see ST deleted the text of the message above…. never mind.

What the….? Pitt scores again !

    Pitt 24

    Georgia 6

Ok, I know why. I didn’t tailgate before the game, so I didn’t summon the tailgate god, who as we all know is a UH fan. Consequently the run of bad luck in Georgia.

I need to change the luck around, it’s my responsibility as a long time UH fan.

I need to run to the store and get a 6 pack. No wait, a 12 pack. All right, lets be real and do it right. I’m gonna run to the store to pick up a whole case and a pound of Poke, and I’ll invite my girlfriend over to watch the game. If she can’t make it I’ll see if my wife can iunvite some of her friends over…..Now THAT’s a tailgate party !

Watch. Because of me Moniz will turn things around. You’re welcome, that’s the least I could do……

  119. Shoko July 14, 2012 1:53 pm

Anyone know what time Coach Chows segment on Outside the Lines will air tomorrow? I’m checking my Dvr but can’t find it. I thought it was supposed to be 3pm eastern time.

    Thanks!

  127. Eric July 14, 2012 2:23 pm

#93 SteveM – the reason its a big deal is because the $200K is state money. If it was donor money, it would be a UH Athletics problem. This is taxpayer money. The last thing we want is all the Hawaii sports haters going crazy like they did with Coach Mac’s salary.

  128. Pupule Portagee July 14, 2012 2:42 pm

Aloha DPK ! Mahalo for the Welcome.

Yup, been lurking for a while…..Season tickets since 1975.

    45-20 Pitt, 3:30 left in the 3rd.

I knew I should have started the tailgate earlier !

Come on Mo ! (and yes, the audio is in and out during the game.)

Whatever…audio/no audio. It’s football during the summer with a UH connection.

    Gotta Luv It !

  129. Pupule Portagee July 14, 2012 2:49 pm

End of the 3rd quater. Not too good looking……. No matter what, Still gotta support !

Hey, I went to every home game during the 0-12 Von Appon year.

No matter what, Still gotta support !

Our top quaterback is a 3rd string player from football powerhouse Duke?

No matter what, Still gotta support !

It’s a re-building year and our first game is against USC.

No matter what, Still gotta support !

    Imua Hawai’i !!

This is NOT taxpayer money. It is under State control but it comes from customers of the Athletic Department and not from taxes. But no matter where the money came from, no one can afford to lose $200K.

  134. kapakahi July 14, 2012 5:15 pm

While always exciting to get new players joining the FB program, JMHO that these recent late pick-ups (Schroeder, Grimes, and possibly Hall) kinda indicates the positions (QB, DB, TE) that Chow might feel least confident with.

While I’ll take that to mean that Chow must feel OK with the quality of players at the OL and DT, JMHO that it would be nice to add more bodies at those positions to add depth since that’s definitely where the most season-ending injuries have been experienced in recent seasons.

If nothing else, Duke transfers will help keep the APR of the team up, whether they play or not.

#6 – I was called and asked to help look for punters. I found two really great JC kids who just earned their AA. One was all-conference, was offered by Arizona then sent to a JC as a non qualifier, then the staff changed at Arizona so he was not picked up again when he graduated. The other is a Cali JC kid, looks great on video and came recommended to me by a local coach in Cali. Their video looks great. Then there was a h.s. player out of Cali but Im not holding hope that he could come in and play right away. Either way, they are in the hands of the UH coaches now so I’m out of it and have no further info. ST will probably hear before me.

so after eating chicken caniloni from Bravo, hubby and I are watching Ghost Riders, starring Nicholas Cage.

    ST

I agree…I found it a bit shaded on the racist side. I was once a contributor for golf magazines and did a lot of sports photography in Southeast Asia and I’m amazed how this got published by a top tier company.

I agree with what a few others have already said. To go after graduated young men tells me either you are weak in certain spots, or you can never be strong enough. In football depth is almost everything… therefore, you can never be strong enough.

Surely Coach Chow has concerns… but the defensive side of the ball is looking incredible on paper. Defense keeps you in the game, and an O perhaps not quite hitting on all cylinders just needs to be tuned up. Coach Chow will get the motor running and finely tuned. Combined with this D, it’ll buy Coach Chow the time he needs. Maybe we we’ve been offense spoiled for so long where our offense was the defense we forgotten what a great constant and consistent D can do… and that’s give an offense time.
