Taking care of business

UH’s athletic department can prove its business sense with today’s opening of the H-Zone merchandise store at Ward Centers.

While the on-campus facilities — Stan Sheriff Center, Les Murakami Stadium and Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center — are run efficiently, UH has to chance to show it can handle the merchandise duties it has long craved.

H-Zone appears to have a solid plan, including using corporate partners to defray costs. The corresponding Web site should boost the store’s reach.

Now it will be up to UH to show it can continually produce attractive merchandise, meet on-line orders in a timely fashion, and do well enough to eventually expand to the trifecta of tourist-shopping spots: Ala Moana Center, Waikiki and Honolulu International Airport.

    Morning ST.
I agree with your comment yesterday that the SSC store should be open daily.
For folks visiting the campus and checking out the Athletic Area, it’s easy to pick up some wears instead of walking to the bookstore.

Well atleast we did at the DuckStore when we visited Eugene stadium area last year. Oh well, someday they will listen to some of your advice.

  2. Last Call July 1, 2014 5:59 am

Many of the products in the H Store are manufactured in China using forced child labor. I will be boycotting the H store.

  3. Shoko July 1, 2014 6:02 am

I was thinking it might be a good idea to have an H-Zone store of kiosk located in a Vegas casino where a lot of locals hangout for UH games like The Cal or some other casino frequented by visiting Warrior fans. If Vegas is truly the Ninth Isle, I would think there is a market for such a business venture with local casinos. Just a thought.

  4. tom-warriornation July 1, 2014 6:09 am

All fans across the country should proudly wear their UH logo caps & shirts everyday! I wear my H-logo underwear to bed each night; lol.

  5. BigWave96744 July 1, 2014 6:13 am

So who is watching Sahka, today?

  6. tom-warriornation July 1, 2014 6:13 am

My friend in Texas just told me he has a group of 100+ locals that will attend the UH road game at Rice; anyone else going and need group tickets–I will try to get the best seats available behind our team. Email me: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

  10. kawika49 July 1, 2014 6:37 am

  11. $ July 1, 2014 6:53 am

Last Call, you are hurting Ben Jay’s family if you boycott his H Store.

  12. Inyoface July 1, 2014 7:51 am

If you buy UH products from Fan Fanatics, does UH get a cut?

  13. NorthShoreFan July 1, 2014 7:57 am

Interesting stuff today, spoke with a dad whose son had 18 concussions through out his football career. Dad is concerned about when his son turns 40 or there about.

  14. Stephen Tsai July 1, 2014 8:25 am

I wonder if soccer players incur more concussions than football players. At least in football, nobody flops or bites.

  15. Old School Dave July 1, 2014 8:38 am

I create my own UH sports apparel and I get a lot of, “hey where you get dat shirt?

To avoid any legal problems I never use the “H” or conference logo the name or image of an athlete .

  20. Lowtone123 July 1, 2014 9:11 am

Read an article on yahoo about Ben Utecht, former NFL TE with the Colts and the Redskins. Had five diagnosed concussions (how many not diagnosed?) and started having memory loss at 30. Now 33, he suffers from amnesia, dizziness and sudden mood changes. A father of three daughters, Utecht has testified on Capitol Hill that one of his girls told the family doctor that she sometimes becomes afraid of her father during his dark spells at home.

“That broke my heart,” Utecht told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “It was a wakeup call.”

Utecht has become a prominent spokesman for organizations that study traumatic brain injury. He participated in the recent White House Concussion Summit and won a public leadership award from the American Academy of Neurology.

  21. Andrew July 1, 2014 9:13 am

I’m surprised there aren’t more concussions in soccer. I mean especially for corner kicks, players are jumping for the ball to head it and there are a bunch of other players trying to do the same. That happening plus no helmets of course equals a concussion waiting to happen.

  22. Ipu Man July 1, 2014 10:00 am

I went Monday to Ward Center to try to locate the shop but didn’t see it. Where exactly is it? Is it near Pictures Plus???

  23. Lowtone123 July 1, 2014 10:28 am

It is near the end where Border’s used to be.

  24. jimmy the lock July 1, 2014 10:33 am

No Aloha shirts on the website, sad. You’d think they would be well stocked and ready to sell, sad.

  25. jimmy the lock July 1, 2014 10:34 am

Good idea, bad website rollout, lose money.

  26. Gino July 1, 2014 10:39 am

  30. jimmy the lock July 1, 2014 11:15 am

  31. NotNasti July 1, 2014 11:43 am

    Extra time…thank the goalie.

  33. Shoko July 1, 2014 12:20 pm

Hope that’s not the full inventory that will be available to purchase online. There was a lot more offered on the old website.

  34. Shoko July 1, 2014 12:22 pm

Now that I think about it, that’s surely not the full inventory that will be offered for online purchases. However, one would think that the entire UH gear would be in stock on the opening day of the H-Zone stores.

  35. st. anthony trojan July 1, 2014 12:30 pm

#46 north shore…yesterdays late post…yea me agree with you on that one…morals n ethics are long gone along with the hand-shake…now is win at all costs… n cheat as much as you can get away with…where are the moral leaders at BYU ?

  36. SteveM July 1, 2014 12:35 pm

    I just read Ferd Lewis’s column today…
    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sportspremium/20140701_Kickoff_time_change_creates_conflict_for_UH.html

My reaction, consistent with my usual diatribe, is that no Aloha stadium UH football game should have be scheduled before 7:00 pm anyway…OK, maybe 6:00 pm in November. This is related to Hawaii’s tropical sun, heat, UV exposure and setting time.

Ferd should realize this is not that great a dilemma– with a 2:00 pm start time, any elder dual football/volleyball fan would be watching football on PPV rather than work on their tans at the stadium. Then they would go to the SSC. Having sat in 2:00, 4:30, 5:00 pm starts at the stadium, a 4:30 time is still not going to fill the stadium or cause PPV to lose viewers. Just move the volleyball game back 30 minutes.

So, let me get this straight… (1) we pay for the charter flights for the MWC teams. Which means they are under no pressure to get to the airport for commercial flights–which was the rationale for moving our games into the 5:00 pm sun.

    (2) We get no MWC TV money?… but would we move to afternoon games and let the attendance drop more (as they did in Mac’s years–and it wasn’t all Mac’s fault–this I lay on JD being a nice guy and trying to help out the WAC whiners). OK, I can see accommodating a big name non-MWC school provided we get some of their TV money. PPV doesn’t care what time the game is played.

I hope Ben Jay would broil in the mauka red section at 3:00 pm on a sunny day for a couple hours (without the banned umbrellas and parasols). Might give some insight on the sun as an attendance issue.

  37. Down with... July 1, 2014 1:00 pm

…#36: been sitting the shade side since the beginning and can only feel for those across the way in the sun….buggah is nasty during the early games.

you want home field advantage? Play it to our time schedule (6-7PM start)….what does this do for the opposing team? Make them play a game at their normal hour of lets say 8 or 9PM and end at 12am-1am their time….that’s got to affect playing somewhat….the sun does nothing to deter them because usually they on the shady side, unless (like recent years) UH flips the sidelines when playing in the sun…but then again flipping the sidelines gives you a disadvantage cause that’s not the normal side you play on….sort like ever since they flipped the UH dugout (baseball) they haven’t been doing good lately….don’t let the money or know-nothings control OUR Traditions……

  38. jimmy the lock July 1, 2014 1:10 pm

Home field advantage never work the last couple of seasons.

  39. st. anthony trojan July 1, 2014 1:34 pm

    # 38… me agree you there…not enough fans in seats is a very big factor me thinks …
now ig Mr. BJ has a plan to fill it up with the first game…be nice for our warriors to enter stadium n see that …

  40. SteveM July 1, 2014 1:37 pm

Down with.. — at a discussion session Coach McMackin held with ST and the Tsai-kos one summer, I asked him whether he felt an 7:30 pm game time (like in the 80’s) would be good or bad for the team.

His immediate response was that he would like the games to start at midnight and put the opposing (WAC) teams as far out of sync as possible. A midnight start would be 2-4 am in the morning WAC time. 🙂

An optimist noted that a midnight HST start would put the game, if televised, in the east coast time slot just before the NFL Sunday games…

  41. kawika49 July 1, 2014 1:56 pm

    How about H furoshik i?

  42. st. anthony trojan July 1, 2014 1:56 pm

wow # 40… can you imagine a Mr. BJ sitting down with ST in a few weeks before the season… my god … could charge admission 4 that one he he he…be a good fund raiser huh….

  43. kawika49 July 1, 2014 1:57 pm

    Furoshiki (gift wrap cloth)

  44. jalansky July 1, 2014 2:11 pm

When I was at UH, one of the instructors in the Japanese language department used furoshiki to carry his books to and from class. If done properly, UH furoshiki might be good omiyage for visitors from Japan and other places.

  45. ponojr July 1, 2014 2:48 pm

We sit in the hot sun watching our kids play soccer and pop warner football. I think UH fans can suck it up and sit in the heat for a few hours. Fans on the mainland do.

  46. Inyoface July 1, 2014 3:00 pm

UH needs to make a football calendar with past star players with bio and stats.

  47. st. anthony trojan July 1, 2014 3:24 pm

    # 45…me agree with you..for those maybe under 60 or so…as ur name indicates…would your father agree with you if he was in the 60’s or 70’s, or rather they watch on PPV ?

For me…one game in the hot sun is ok…cuz me can always get up n go get soda etc…for a few minutes…at 70 + maybe not so for others…thank god…me can still walk 5 miles or so n up n down stairs… maybe others will struggle with that…just saying…

Credit where credit is due…the new web site for the H zone is super…looks nice…very informative…

But I saw some disturbing things…the continuing snub of former warrior football players. Not to put down Mr. Kekoa doing the blessing…but why… when we have Mr. Joe Onosai…? unless he was not available…why no uh band.. unless it was not shown…why no mr. ige n the arsonist…auwae… when you go ask for a kala next year…they will not be to positive maybe ?
could be was not shown on the site when me checked it out…???

  48. madeinhawaii July 1, 2014 3:26 pm

Eh what do I know. I just remember seeing posts at UH website ten days before they appear on their Facebook site.

  49. Down with... July 1, 2014 4:20 pm

ponojr…don’t get me wrong if you one supporter than suck it up no matter the time of day, but get so much older people who support the UH (in fact probably more than younger people), that the hot sun does play a role for them. Of course they don’t have children actually playing in the game so for them to have to “suck it up” is sometimes hard….and hot. I’m just saying… if given the “choice” then later is better for many reasons…..

and if possible during football season, the other sports should try to schedule games either during the day for Saturday, or other days (ie friday/sunday) if possible. Not to only give each sport the chance of having fan base show up, but also to get the other sports personnel a chance to support their colleagues…i know this is difficult to try and do, but something to think about if we have some say in scheduling…scheduling football and womens volleyball same day and around same time, means lost revenue for potentially both sports…

  50. SteveM July 1, 2014 5:22 pm

Today is the birthday of a very prominent Tsai-ko.
But since he is a politician in an election year, I am hesitant to blurt out his name.
…don’t want to start anything political on the blog.

But he was a UH athlete (swimmer) and former UH student senate president. In his day job, he roasted a certain athletic director (initials “HF”) over the legislative fires. He sponsored a bill to give $10M matching funds to UH last year. A surprise visitor at ST’s 2007 blog party 3, he came to two large Tsai-ko Karaoke Calls later and teamed up with legendary Tsaikette Esme. He discusses family and cruising with me and puts on a Lt. Col. Hawaii National Guard uniform on weekends– served in Iraq in 2009.

    Happy Birthday, Sir !!!

  51. hatakeman July 1, 2014 6:39 pm

Wearing a hat for early start football game will help, but maybe not good for setting sun in da eyes.

  52. kawika49 July 1, 2014 6:42 pm

    M T?

  53. tommui July 1, 2014 6:44 pm

  54. hatakeman July 1, 2014 6:44 pm

Norm Chow on afternoon Animals Talk show. Said O-line is good. Likes the move of Ben Clarke to left tackle and Kody Afusia at center where he is more vocal.

The new H Zone looks good! Hope it’s a big help to the Athletic Department’s revenue stream. Certainly a step in the right direction.
