Brown, Bright reinstated

Head coach Greg McMackin and athletic director Jim Donovan have completed their investigation, and linebacker Aaron Brown and left wideout Darius Bright will not have to serve an additional suspension. They were benched for last night’s game because of their arrests last week following their alleged involvement in a fight in Waikiki. McMackin is expected to impose community-service requirements on the pair.

* * * * *

• OK, the offense had a few glitches. Then again, the Warriors were trying to implement a new wrinkle with designed rollouts, bootlegs and options. (Bryant Moniz’s 57-yard scoring dash was similar to the mid-line options Rice used to run in the early 2000s. Like the wildcat, in which the running back takes the direct snap, defenses now must account for the UH quarterback as a running threat. One more defender tracking Moniz means one less pass-rusher or coverage guy. It also is a preview into the UH future. David Graves, Stump Godfrey, Jeremy Higgins, Cayman Shutter and Mystery QB are all mobile quarterbacks. Even Kevin Spain played for a run-option team in high school.

• Right guard Chauncy Winchester-Makainai said he will undergo an MRI today on his sore left knee.

• Left end Liko Satele said he is fine after leaving the game because of dehydration-like symptoms. Satele and Zach Masch provide a nice mix for the Warriors. Masch is a physical run-stopper; Satele is a speed-rusher. It also was nice to see Desmond Dean get some reps.

• Nice to see Masch carrying the American flag when the Warriors raced onto the field.

• Doesn’t that new UH commercial want to make you sign up for classes? Of course, it might be a little risky with flying cheerleaders on campus. But that was a cool video.

• Six days away . . .

Good game. Drastic improvement on special teams. Defense is tough. Hardly any penalties. Time to prepare for the Huskies. Brown and Bright re-instated?

  9. Last Call September 4, 2011 8:29 am

ESPN announcers made a big deal out of coaches use of the double time out and how it could have come back to bite him in the rear.

    Your thoughts ?

The game was very good. The new UH promo video was great. And the student section was hopping, it actually looked more full than than the non-student section of the lower mails stands. All-in-all a fun time at Aloha Stadium!

  12. Justin September 4, 2011 8:36 am

Any chance we will see WR Chris Gant or Cecil Doe in the next few games? How have they looked in practice? Seems like the offense is in need of some playmakers and guys who can run after the catch.

Given the outcome of the game, and the way the players responded after getting that “pep talk” from Mac, hind sight is what you make it. Glad to see the passion in Mac. I think Tomey is a real help on the sideline too. We got the Jedi masters on our coaching staff, I tell ya!

    Last Call:

The double timeout was sort of, uh, unique.

The other problem was calling the third timeout early in the fourth quarter. That left UH with no ability to challenge any calls.

But sounded like Mack wanted to get his point across.

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid September 4, 2011 8:46 am

Main ting is it played out the way it should. Nuff said.

  24. mctruck September 4, 2011 8:47 am

Washington just barely got by Eastern Washington, at home: (30-27) yesterday. Eastern Washington led in 1st downs, (30-14). Seems Huskie rb-Polk, is the go to guy,(125yds-rushing), which set up short yardage passing which accounted for their 3 td’s.

So, looks like if UH stops, Polk(23 carries for 125 yds.)….that would do big time damage to their offense.

    Washington’s qb,(Keith Price, passing(17-25, for 102 yds.) sacked 3 times.

    RE: UH Manoa Commercial.

Thought I’d post this link again. First saw that UH Manoa commercial on YouTube a few weeks ago via Facebook.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3yBwB-vBmA

Really well-done and the under-water scene blew me away. All composed and produced by the students at UH Manoa. The parents of incoming UH students and those that just enrolled from the mainland are really loving it and this commercial is one of the FEW things they’ve shown on the big screen at both the volleyball and football games that actually drew applause from the audience.

    UH got some talented students!!!

  35. Da Punchbowl Kid September 4, 2011 9:01 am

I like seeing Coach Mack PISSED.

Again, maybe I was the only one that noticed that the jumbotron showed Coach Mack ripping the team a new ***hole as they all took a knee around him.

After the huddle broke, the crowd bust out into applause as if to agree in unison with what Coach Mack was trying to say.

Stephen – who is Paul Arnett? When we got back home, I read the “breaking new” story about the game written by him. Not very positive, but at least he acknowledged the win – albeit grudgingly.

Tried to find the piece in both versions of this morning’s Star-Advertiser but it was not in either one.

Okay – wassup with the 9:30 am awaygates next Saturday? Anything scheduled? Or do we just find our own bar somewhere? The big problem for us is the game will be pau by 1 pm and the first volleyball match doesn’t kick off for another four hours.

Will check with The Shack here in Kailua to see if they’re going to carry away games this year. If not, I guess we’ll do the Murphy’s thing and maybe kill time by going to a movie and working out at the Y before heading on up to The Stan.

Also, I see that Oceanic Time-Warner is NOT going to carry the Las Vegas game on PPV so that means most bars won’t be showing it. I suppose listening to the game on the radio while doing yardwork won’t be a horrendous thing, but still….why would anyone not want to show a UNLV/Hawai`i on tv here?

See you tonight at The Stan.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

The time-outs could have, but did not, hurt us.

It did allow Coach Mac time to get his “message” across.

So any debate about the time outs would be just mere “could have”, “would have”, “might have” speculation. In short, much ado about nothing.

  53. madeinhawaii September 4, 2011 9:22 am

    Jomar808

Moniz was sacked 5 times… You usually don’t win games letting your QB get sacked 5 times. Fortunately, theirs got sacked two times more. But that just shows you how aggressive the D-line were and how little time Moniz really had to throw anything deep. Even Colorado didn’t get all that many deep balls out, even with the physical mismatch against Tank

    Re-Mack’s contract

    Is his stock going up?

I hope JD doesn’t pussyfoot in resigning Mack.

With the UCLA, Wash St. Georgia …etc. head coaching jobs in jeopardy and those teams continue their slides will there be high profile coaching vacancies at the end of the season?

A shake up in one area creates a domino effect in another.

There could be a lot of opening at the end of the season.

Could Macks name surface? Hope JD gets on it. Full price. No dc.

    Kevin,

FYI, on your asking about Chauncey Winchester-Makainai. I saw him and spoke with his mom after the game. He should be ok, but was on crutches as a precaution. You could see his desire even then, as he kept walking and testing it. He may miss this week though and maybe both road games. I wouldn’t count him out though.

  59. madeinhawaii September 4, 2011 9:34 am

Coach Mack’s demeanor is a lot more like a Head Coach these days. He even looks like he’s in better physical shape that he’s been in the past 4 years.

  66. Laura September 4, 2011 9:42 am

Haka, wow, Coach Mac is taking the whole squad with him to UW, including redshirts. Cheerleaders and the band must be going to, cause Hawaiian aircraft holds approximately 225+ passengers.

  67. RedZone September 4, 2011 9:42 am

I thought that Scot Harding did a really good job. He looked solid. I also have feeling that Edwards will be taking one to the house. He looks like a big time returner. Tomey also had the return team attacking the punter sometimes pushing the blocking backs into him. good job by special teams.

Great call by Aranda having the elephant drop back into the passing lane resulting in an almost touchdown. Watching UHs dine crush a BCS football team pocket was awesome. Embree tried but he could not get his team to run through the great wall of polynesia. Colorado was forced out of what they were working on wanting to do since the spring and Embree got really quiet in the second half.

Mo can run and I have always wanted him to but the others in waiting need to be ready to step in if needed. Mo did not start off quick which has been his MO in the past but I expect to see the offense start clicking in the next game. Gordy has a huge job ahead of him. Mo can’t take those kind of hits and last the season. They got to plug those holes.

Overall good first game for the Warriors. Revenge is sweet.

    Some quotes from the Buffs

“I don’t know if it was first-game jitters or what,” Embree said. “But that wasn’t us…We’ll figure it out. There’s no magic solution; we’ve got to get better.”

“We knew No. 17 (Moniz) was a heck of a player,” Embree said. “We knew he could run…he just made two plays where he was better than us.”

Added junior linebacker Jon Major: “I never thought he’d beat us with his legs . . . he’s a great competitor; hats off to him.”

Senior quarterback Tyler Hansen said “little things” in the first half helped the Buffs “beat themselves.”

But, said Hansen, “We got ourselves back in the game, but we’ve got to be better. (UH) made a good defensive adjustment with their pass rush in the third quarter. They put our tackles and our O-line on their heels.”

“We came back… we were there,” Embree said. “Then they hit us with the shovel pass…”

Asked about his coaching debut in general, Embree said, “It was not good, we lost . . . I’m not a moral victory guy. We’ve got to break this losing streak on the road.”

Last note before I head to the mainland…

Eastern Washington’s QB is technically a former Warrior…Bo Mitchell committed to play for UH till June Jones moved to SMU. Mitchell moved over to SMU and was their starting QB until Jones gave Pedrone the starting position. Mitchell subsequently transferred to Eastern Washington which also uses the spread offense and is doing well as their QB. UDUB should be prepared for our passing attack, as Eastern Washington uses some of the same principles. Interesting to note that Eastern Washington lost in the final moments as UDUB intercepted a “jumpball” pass in the endzone.

I like our chances to beat UDUB…Now, my problem is finding out where I can watch the game in Kansas City. 🙁

    Go Warriors!

This might not be the largest Country in the World, but I think it is the most sophisticated. One way you can measure the success of somewhere is the measure it’s government. There is little doubt that this place blows other countries away. I wouldn’t want to die there, but a year or three would be pretty awesome.

  108. PowderPuff September 4, 2011 10:42 am

Hoooooo….nice showing by the “D” last night. Nice to see Mo’s rushing abilities; hope the offense can work out their glitches by Saturday. Safe travels to all of those going to Seattle….I will be yelling loud!

    Good morning, Tsaikos!

Working on the DVD of the game. Anyone who’s received one of my DVDs have an opinion about the radio audio. Lots of extra work. Maybe no need?

Maybe with the right “prodding” Mack will give the group a “3rd quarter Family Sharing” session, too! 😆

  113. d1shima September 4, 2011 10:56 am

    PP,

“Smokes” is right. A friend of ours said she couldn’t handle it and spent the 1st half on the concourse.

  114. A-House September 4, 2011 10:56 am

First, want to thank the Tsaikos who donated their “free” ticket to a Wahine BB game yesterday. Comes with your football season tickets. Will get 17 tickets to Coach Dana soon.

If others want to donate, bring them to a tailgate.

Second, Chawan your #370 from yesterday – must agree with you – the offcials called the block in the back AFTER reviewing the down by contact at the 1-yard line – no flag was thrown, to the best of my knowledge – even the ESPN broadcasters mentioned that fact.

UH should point this out to where ever the officials came from and the NCAA..

  115. AlaWai September 4, 2011 11:00 am

Mac’s 2X Timeout event was reminiscent of Dick Tomey calling TO at a Rainbow game at Aloha Stadium years ago. The Stadium went silent and you could hear Dick screaming at his charges. Same scenario same result. I wish their was a video of both events.

    A-house/chawan_cut,

I did see a flag thrown but my thought was that it was for diving into the EZ and going to take the points off the board. I didn’t think he was down before scoring.

My thought was that they “bailed that official out” with the “runner was down” call and threw in the “block in the back” to make the story look good.

  118. Stephen Tsai September 4, 2011 11:01 am

    68 players are going.

  119. Old Diver September 4, 2011 11:02 am

Smart series when we ran the ball forcing Colorado to use all their timeouts. This forced Colorado to run a one dimensional two minute drill which lead to the many sacks. Our offense is less dependent on timeouts than Colorado’s offense. Good coaching.

  120. βρεω808 September 4, 2011 11:02 am

Nah – I saw yellow on the original feed. The down on the one and the illegal block calls were legit. The official skrewed up w/ his explanation. It wouldn’t have made any difference for Warrior fans. 😐

  121. PowderPuff September 4, 2011 11:02 am

  138. tommui September 4, 2011 11:12 am

#110 OLDIE – Thought the ESPN2 people were slightly bias towards Hawaii.

When Moniz scored and was slapping hands ON THE SIDELINE (not the endzone) and got flagged, the announcer thought the official made a bad call.

OTH, I don’t know how the radio people were.

  139. Jack Flash September 4, 2011 11:13 am

Bobby Curren said at first it was Hanohano who intercepted the ball and ran it for a touchdown. He went on about how the 290 lb dineman ran the ball. Then later he blamed the jerseys for the mistake.

  145. Jack Flash September 4, 2011 11:16 am

  152. βρεω808 September 4, 2011 11:20 am

    Just feed some Rocky cashews…. 🙄 🙂

  153. Innocent Observer September 4, 2011 11:21 am

Using the run option by Moniz tells a lot about the receivers; it appears that the coaching staff does not have that much faith in them as last year. And it did show in the game, the only consistent one was Miah, the rest were so, so. Pollard did well last year because of Salas and Kealoha, the defense could not cover everyone. This year pollard is a marked man, so he has to do better to get open. But to continue to win games and the WAC title, the receivers must come around and run their routes (get open) and catch the ball, Moniz cannot continue to get tackled as much as he did and will likely get hurt.

In regards to brown and bright – another case of double standard; starters get preferential treatment.

  154. βρεω808 September 4, 2011 11:23 am

Redzone – maybe PP gave the wrong ID to everybody! She is kinda soft-spoken…. 😯 🙄 😆

  157. madeinhawaii September 4, 2011 11:26 am

    Jack Flash…

Should both teams make it there undefeated it would be the game of the week… Something the Warriors really need to fight for.

  158. d1shima September 4, 2011 11:26 am

    starters get preferential treatment.

    Hope so!

  159. RedZone September 4, 2011 11:28 am

Mack said it all. Big difference between practice and game speed. they just need to get up to game speed. That is on thing I liked about Pilares. He was always at game speed.

  160. Kevin September 4, 2011 11:28 am

WHY UH WAS IN THE SUN-SIDE OF THE SIDELINES.

I remember a while back that per ESPN televised games, the HOME TEAM’s sideline must be visible to where the MAIN ESPN cameras are.

Congrats to the men in green or black.

Mahalo to the CU fans for attending. They’re were very impressed with Moniz and the team. Lots of good things to say about our warriors and wished us luck for the rest of the season. CU fans mentioned warrior fans been very friendly and helpful. One last thing, CU fans says they’ll be watching and rooting for Hawaii throughout the season.

  163. Jack Flash September 4, 2011 11:35 am

    Ho-Ho-Ho:

About an hour ago, I sent off a bet/challenge to my cousin who is a member of the Board of Regents at the University of Washington.

I assume that you’ll be at the Warriors-Huskies football match-up next Saturday. How about a small bet that really makes it count?

If UH wins, you make a $25 donation to Representative Eric Cantor’s re-election campaign. If UW wins, I’ll make a $25 donation to Michelle Bachman’s Presidential campaign.

This will really make the outcome count!! Let me know one way or t’other.</blockquote

Alas!! Here’s what I got in the way of an auto-response – I think:

I will be traveling extensively until the middle of September with limited access to email……..

Think he’ll use the “traveling extensively” as an excuse?

CU fans were good sports. Lots of friendly heckling in our section. When the game was in hand and CU fans were leaving, group of us were singing “na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, a-lo-ha”and alot of CU fans came to shake our hands.

  170. d1shima September 4, 2011 11:42 am

Another game stopped mid-game in Morgantown. Unreal….60,000+ leaving the stadium.

  171. AlaWai September 4, 2011 11:42 am

#110 Oldie. BC was his usual consistent self in Play by Play. Veneri provides humor but not as much substance and insight as Kekaula. Robert did his homework on Warrior personel and its schemes. I missed seeing his standing presence in the broadcast booth from across the field. Veneri was better on the field as a sideline analyst. He seemed a little lost on the technical side of things. Bottom line is still better than ESPN coverage, but not enough to do extra work. Thanks for all you do.

    Good morning everyone!

Great win and a great day in Hawaii!

    GO WARRIORS !!!

Note to self: stop acting like a 30 year old and get more than 4 hours sleep every night on a cruise disembarking on game day. Lots of time to limp to the tailgates and game, but no adrenalin prescription. 😐

…but gotta admit this Hawaii cruise is much improved and the best I’ve had in a long time….

  183. Wes'side Warrior September 4, 2011 12:14 pm

    Howzit, everyone!

    Gratz again to da Warriorz!

Oldie… I think the tv portion is good enough. Lots of mistakes on da radio last night. Besides, I really miss Robert Kekaula doing his thing. John Veneri was okay, but there was no flow to the program. And, lots of times when he was about to say something, he ended up being cutoff by BC.

So, nah, no need da extra work. At least not for this game.

By the way, thanks for sending me a copy of last year’s UH-Army game. With friends stationed at the Academy, it’s a game I’ll always cherish!

#9. Good coaches coach, which is what coach Mac did. Dumb announcers (like espn’s) lack the skills and knowledge to be able to keep talking when there is an unexpected break in the action…so they talk a liitle buffalo krap. At 10-0 with less than a minute in the 2nd, they used 1 t.o… And it was crummy to hear Bobby curren is in preseason form…damn he sure needs glasses.

  186. clowns nose September 4, 2011 12:25 pm

Listened to BC describe how the coaches wanted both Sampson and Edwards on the kickoff receiving team.

    The problem both wear #2.

BC’s words: Both didn’t want to change numbers allowing both on the KR at the same time.

After seeing how angry Coach M can get, I predict someone will change numbers.

  187. Willie September 4, 2011 12:27 pm

Wade, I commented on that last night. Listening to Bobby Curren while watching the game made me wonder if he was missing Kekaula and all out of sorts. He not only could have used some glasses but some ginko biloba for his mind also. So many mistakes from start to finish. Wish he would let Veneri have more air time, I like his football player savy & experience.

Shades of Yester-year, Dick Tomey influnce on special teans and the overall feel in the game has changed. I can’t but think that second half double time out was influenced by Coach Tomey., who never to far from Coach Mack on the sidelines. I guess taking a time out in the second half was better than breaking a lap top at the half to make your point.

  207. Derek September 4, 2011 1:04 pm

UH won the battle on offense, defense, and on special teams. Turnovers were even at 1 each. Mike Edwards on Kickoffs and Scott Harding on Punt returns were solid. Was looking at a blocked kick by Hardy-Tuliau but didn’t happen. Offense needs work and tighten execution. Moniz made some HUGE plays, at least 5 that I can remember with his rushing, that made the difference in the game. 7 sacks were impressive and $3,500 were generated for UH athletics by McDonalds’ of Hawaii. “I’m Lovin it.” Probably the most impressive stat of the evening was 17 net rushing yards allowed by the defense. Remember, last year Stewart and Lockridge both rushed for over 100 yards. Payback complete. Now the Huskies and it will be difficult. I have to study it a little more, but when was the last time Hawaii beat a BCS caliber team on the road. This is a good UW team and Sarkisian is a good coach. Colorado had 16 returning starters, Washington 15. The talent level is about the same. The difference is the game is in Husky Stadium and that’s worth about 7 points to the Huskies. Huskies should be about a 9 to 13 point favorite. Hawaii can compete, but things will have to fall into place if we are to win this ballgame. Hawaii winning easily this game, not a chance. I think one of 3 things will happen. 1) Hawaii will win a close game, 2) Washington will win a close game, or 3) Washington will win easily. To me a close game is defined as within a touchdown. My prediction later in the week.

Comments on the first week of college football:

    1) Most disappointing team – Notre Dame. Losing at home and committing 5 turnovers.

    2) “They Let Em Off the Hook” team – Utah State against Auburn. They must be crying.

    3) “Playoffs, are you kidding me” team – Oregon. No championship game this year. Second place – TCU. No undefeated team this year.

    4) “David vs Goliath” team – Boise St. Beats another BCS team easily.

    5) “Surprie, surprise, surprise” team – Sacramento St. beats Oregon State in Corvallis.

    6) Most impressive team and player – Wisconsin and Russell Wilson, QB – 8 offensive possessions, 8 scores (7 TDs and 1 FG). He left the game midwaythrough the 3rd quarter. If he played the entire game, Wisconsin probably would have scored close to 80 points.

    Kaimuki Kid,

Lots of people noticed what I noticed…Dick Tomey had the ear of Mack more than all the other coaches put together.

    Makes one wonder…;-)

Besides the lack of WR-QB connections…we need to do something about a particular cornerback.

Maybe its just first game jitters but we got “Lucky” on a lot of balls thrown his way. Real lucky.

  218. Committed Road Warrior September 4, 2011 1:22 pm

The SMU-A&M game is on TV out here in DC. Odd for not having a regional Fox Sports affiliate here, but not complaining.

  219. madeinhawaii September 4, 2011 1:23 pm

I thought Tank played a very good game. Colorado obviously played the miss match and threw in Tanks direction more often than any other. Tank was there for all but one play in which he seemed to have lost the ball. But the big play by Colorado’s receiver was a ball that was perfectly thrown where the receiver had to go up high to catch it. Not a throw that comes very often and probably would have been caught regardless of who was covering him. For a size miss-match, Tank covered his corner very well. Considering he was out for a year, he’ll only get better.

  220. d1shima September 4, 2011 1:33 pm

    mih,

It’s like they say, “I don’t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun YOU!”

The opposing offenses gotta throw someplace. If one CB is playing shutdown, the other one needs to step it up.

  221. madeinhawaii September 4, 2011 1:33 pm

On the play that got away from Tank… where was the safety?

  222. NYUH September 4, 2011 1:41 pm

haka: Co not happy about the game. Although not gracious in defeat they are not crying and complaining about it. I don’t think they realized that last year was a bit of a fluke. UH coming off an incredibly long road trip and a tough game at Army didn’t have legs for a sustained go at Co’s talent up in those mtns.

  223. d1shima September 4, 2011 1:44 pm

    mih,

Not where I can watch right now but it seems like CU was sending the RB out a lot which might have occupied a Safety.

#178 – Both my cousin and I are actively involved in our respective state Democratic Parties. He personally raised more than $10 million from his business connections in 2008 and is already involved in a 2012 Super Pac in next year’s Prez race.

Of course, I’m lucky to scrape together $25 for a ticket to a candidate’s fundraiser.

And for those of you who do not get it that there is a HUGE AND SOLID connection between what goes on in Washington, D.C. & state capitols and collegiate & professional sports, please wake up and smell the money pouriing into the hands of the former from the latter – and vice versa. You may not like it, but it ain’t gonna go away anytime soon,

That’s why I keep urging the regulars around here to keep up with local politics and make your concerns about ________, __________, or _________ (fill in the blanks) known to local & national policymakers. Many times, the numbers of people actually have more impact than the number of $$$$.

Wonder what the community service project Bright & Brown will be working on? And, no, cutting Stephen’s grass doesn’t count! I’d love to see them go out to talk to high school student athletes about life in the college trenches.

It was wonderful talking to Mike Edwards and Brian Clay’s family at yesterday’s T-Gate. Did any other family folks show up?

  225. Stephen Tsai September 4, 2011 1:47 pm

    Wassup Doc:

Paul Arnett is our sports editor. For home games, he writes the on-line story on breaking news. That allows the rest of us to go down and get interviews.

    Re: Tank

He had to play a lot of man coverage. The tough part is he’s the “field” cornerback, meaning he plays the wide side of the formation. That’s a lot of empty space, especially when the opposing team sends a second receiver on an underneath route to drag away the safety.

Tank took responsibility for both TDs. On the first, he said he slipped on the new turf. The second he just got beat

    zone and speed options, eh.

before Moniz’s 1st TD, I told Mrs A-house go for the option – walla – TD on a keeper – very happy that Rolo has instituted a number of option plays which will keep any D-fence honest for the pass and then use the “speed option” around the perimeters.

zone D – jus gotta play and execute your area of responsibility – not try too much and let a receiver go or blotch coverage – reminds me of when Coach Wags really got to yelling at Al Noga for trying to do too much on a play at Aloha Stadium many years ago.

is it me of were UH corners not playing so “soft” as in the years past? kept my binocs trained on UH RT and LT – Shigematsu let too many get by him – were CU’s DEs that fast? -expected to see quicker feet.

looking forward to Seattle knowing how the D must be feeling good about their performance last night – play like that on the road and come home with 2 victories!

keeps my 2012 Sugar Bowl hopes alive!!!

  231. WarriorMojo September 4, 2011 2:25 pm

Nice win for the Warriors. Some random thoughts:

I thought Marcus Malepeai showed well in his limited snaps. Like to see him get more snaps.

Same with respect to Sterling Jackson. Like to seem him get more snaps. Based on his few carries, this dude seems to have the ability to make cuts at full speed and he also ran through a tackle as well. Really did remind me of a maybe smaller, but maybe quicker Alex Green.

I thought Joey Iosefa did a good job, but he seems to be a power back without much shake in his bake. Didn’t see much in the way of moves from him except to jump over tacklers, but that only goes so far. Plus when he does leap, the ball is hanging out there just asking to be punched out. Nothing wrong with these guys splitting reps. Is Sterling’s blocking that bad?

I thought Tank actually did a pretty good job. He was with his man on just about every completion. He just needs to know when to turn and play the ball in the air. Remember, he’s been designated the field corner, which means the receiver he’s playing has a lot more room to maneuver. Edwards, as the boundary corner, has the benefit of his man being in a smaller space. Also, I need to watch my tape, but I didn’t see much safety help on the two TDs.

Can’t really comment on the Oline without watching the tape, but my initial impression is that Brett Leonard did a very good job. He had a fantastic block on Mo’s fake pitch TD. Thought Shigematsu generally did a good job although he was beaten on the fumble play. Right guard is obviously a concern with three guys getting snaps. Didn’t really watch/notice Laurel, which may be a good thing. Same with Sila, although I had a few concerns about him last year.

Glad Hadden got to kick the last FG, because I can’t imagine they will take both Ks on the road. Unlike our resident knifing “expert” (where is he today, anyway?) I thought it was pretty apparent from the Spring game that Chun was very accurate, perhaps a very slight bit more accurate than Hadden, at least on the short stuff (40 and in) . It’s very HARD to cut a kicker who is accurate. Period.

Was NEVER EVER worried about Dunachie and anyone who was, wasn’t paying attention last year.

  232. papajoe2 September 4, 2011 2:32 pm

ala wai, ST, I mentioned about Mana twice yesterday. Nobody commented.

Good job. Got the scoop. Hahaha. Ravens looking to trade. Many veterans on the market. Mana still has a chance for the roster.

  233. WarriorMojo September 4, 2011 2:35 pm

ST, I know he’s your boss and you’ve indicated he’s a good guy in the past when I’ve criticized him. Maybe so.

But in my view Arnett was a mediocre sports reporter at best and was worse as a sports columnist, completely lacking in insight and style. His arrogance and condescension towards UH sports and UH sports fans is pathetic.

  234. sports_for_fun September 4, 2011 2:38 pm

I was never impressed with Kyle Padron at SMU. JJ made a wise choice in benching him.

  235. Gmoney September 4, 2011 2:41 pm

I’m wondering if it’s just me, but I couldn’t help but notice that Colorado didn’t take out #26 (Ray Polk, 6-1, 205, Jr.) after his idiotic late ‘push’ on Moniz! I mean, at least take ‘um out for ONE play and let the brutha soak in his stupidity…

sorry to say this, but that’s stinky coaching my friends…

Furthermore, I’m a bit surprised that he didn’t get thrown out! …being that anyone and everyone who was watching the play (at the stadium at least) could tell Moniz was NOT looking for any more yards down field and had committed to the sideline.

What I’m really glad to see though, is our boys not retaliating and doing the same to the buffs… Now THAT’S GREAT coaching my friends… loved the 2 timeouts too by the way.

  236. sports_for_fun September 4, 2011 2:41 pm

Those missed reps during training camp for the Warrior starting receivers really showed in yesterday’s game.

Only his first game but I had the thought of a great fullback running thru my mind:

If you need two yards, he’ll get ya three…

if you need twelve yards, he’ll get ya three.

    😉

  242. papajoe2 September 4, 2011 3:03 pm

SMU has a designated kick blocker. 6’8″ comes right up the middle. Last name Hunt. He has 12 career blocks. Blocked a extra point a few minutes ago. Remember Tony Akpan?

  243. d1shima September 4, 2011 3:07 pm

    ppj2,

I’m sure The Former Coach remembers him!

  244. bigislandkurt September 4, 2011 3:13 pm

what most pundits fail to realize is that we won that game with our main weapon (QB and receivers) being totally out of sync. Had we been in mid season form with the passing game, we could have run up the score. Aside from Miah, there was nothing consistent going on with any of the receivers.

    BIK

  245. cocobean September 4, 2011 3:13 pm

My gut feeling if given the chance Harding would lead the team in YAC. He oozes want to. Wants to play, wants to catch the ball wants to run with the ball.

  246. bigislandkurt September 4, 2011 3:15 pm

And having a stingy, nasty defense sure didn’t hurt the cause either. 😉

    BIK

  247. NYUH September 4, 2011 3:18 pm

I thought Mike Sellers showed some promise. Nice angles on QB and some really good pressure.

  248. madeinhawaii September 4, 2011 3:22 pm

I think it’s way to early to judge the RBs… both of them. We needed an extra blocker. The Oline is still learning to block, much less pull and punch holes in the Defense for our RBs to rocket through. One thing at a time. But where punching holes weren’t necessary (shovel pass), Iosefa did what he was supposed to do.. catch it and run for positive yards.

  249. madeinhawaii September 4, 2011 3:23 pm

As others have pointed out, though, Moniz, for all his talent and ability, has got to learn to dump the ball to avoid the excessive sacks. Those will add up and haunt him and our team if he’s not careful.

  250. clowns nose September 4, 2011 3:26 pm

Earlier in the week I heard both Rolovich and Mack confronted with the question that Colorado wants to get physical with Hawaii.

Everywhere the coaches went they were asked this question by the media.

    Their answers:

Rolovich-I feel confident in our offense.

Mack-Let’s just play the game already… let’s strap it on already. I’m tired of listening to the other side flex their muscle by saying what they are going to do to Hawaii.

Those… were the coaches words. Or something to the effect. Mack was, like, let’s quit the posturing already let’s take it to the field.

Earlier in camp Rolovich was asked by BC on the prospects of Moniz running.

Rolivich-That’s what pads are for. We’re giving our team the best opportunities to win the game.

    How true.

Coach Aranda on yesterday’s pregame show.

Aranda-When UH’s defense suffocates the opposing team’s rushing offense the team rarely suffers a loss.

    How true.

Coach Mack’s wife on yesterday’s pregame show.

Mrs. Mack-Both teams have been training hard. Both teams have proud traditions. Both teams want to win. Both coaching staffs know what’s at stake….let the best team come out on top.

Those were her words or to the effect. That was nice.

I say the players looking on at how their coaches respond to the media questions and interviews gives them a boost, lift..a spark when they do take the field.

On ESPN broadcast of the game.

    ESPN-That defense is as advertised.

On a number occasions, too, the broadcasters mentioned that Moniz had all the time to throw (so there is some bright spotlight on the OL).

On the Huskies renowned columnist, Condotta, and blog writer.

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/huskyfootballblog/

His reaction to UH being a three point underdog.

That basically means calling it an even game and giving UW the usual three-point edge for being at home. Historically, Hawaii’s a lot worse than that away from home, something I’ll try to detail later in the week.

Me-Let him say whatever he wants. He’s the one that earlier in the summer was dismissive of the UH team, suggesting that come day of the game UH would be in the neighborhood of a 12 point dog..and (the barb) categorizing UH as a similar calibre team as Washington’s first opponent EW.

Keep your ears tuned this week. It should be interesting.

Mack and company carrying the torch… and the one aspect that players looking up is in seeing how their coaches present themselves in the media. (image) It grows on them. The coaches are doing a lot better in how they converse/present themslelves. For example I read an article in which Mack rejected the authors question on answering if Moniz was better than Brennan debate. This is a whistling of a different tune for Mack. Smart. Allows the team to stay united, deal with the present and allows no unneeded pressure on the players.

Can’t wait for the game against the Huskies. The Colorado game was truly a team victory. Great news about Aaron Brown and Darius Bright being reinstated. Just out of curiosity, did it bother anyone else that Colorado was on the cooler Makai sideline? My feeling is that they should’ve been baking in the sun for half the game, not UH. And they had those irritating water fans, too.

    CONGRATS TOTHE WARRIORS

So happy to hear the final, Colorado who??? Exactly, now to get ready for the next game….. another hard earned victory in my eyes…. GO WARRIORS.

The Beast dislocated his rt elbow and will be out for 3 weeks. Weber State loses to Wyoming in the last 22 seconds, heartbreaking to say the least.

Mrs. Bulla and I are now in Reno for a few days to visit family and some r & r; back to Ogden to feed the beast on Wednesday, support them at Utah State on Saturday, then home to the 808 on Sunday.

On a sidebar, 808 represented very well on the roster at Weber State, 15 players with Hawaii ties, Coach McBride loves the work ethic of our student athletes.

    Have a great holiday everyone……make memories,make memories, make memories…..

Waited to 2 years to see Joey Iosefa. – gonna be fun to watch him out of the backfield this year. He’s pretty agile @ 240. Anyone know why Sterling J didn’t get more reps? Seems like a good 1-2 punch and a good change of pace back…

  267. NYUH September 4, 2011 4:44 pm

At least Moniz will have more film to look at for next week with Washington giving up so many passing yards.

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/stevekelley/2016104782_kelley04.html

  268. papajoe2 September 4, 2011 4:45 pm

postmanke, just my opinion but I think Joey is a better blocker that Sterling. Sterling my be a better runner to gain the big one, but with the inexperience of the Oline, maybe a better blocker is needed. Everyone knows that when you come to Hawaii as a running back you have to block to play. I’m not saying the Sterling Jackson cannot block, just that Iosefa has an edge.

  269. papajoe2 September 4, 2011 4:50 pm

Yup, the receivers, without much practice with Moniz, was not in sinc. Moniz was not sharp too, especially in the 1st quarter. To me it looks like some of his passes to Miah took a long time getting there, thus, Miah didn’t have too many chances for the run after the catch. Of course, Miah is no Pilares or Salas right now, but the passing game will improve with more practice. Big upside to the Warriors offense. Just win baby!

  273. koakane September 4, 2011 5:34 pm

attention if you have dishnetwork replay of UH Colorado game @ 6 pm on ESPN 141

  274. WarriorNY September 4, 2011 5:36 pm

    Hey all,

Did you all realize the game is on espn 360? Its awesome… Don’t even have to DVR the ESPN games…

    Pomai,

    UH 45 – UW 17

  275. WarriorNY September 4, 2011 5:39 pm

Oops I forgot… Just sign in remotely with your at&t email address if you have at&t cellphone service and don’t have one of the specified internet providers.

  276. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 4, 2011 6:00 pm

    d1,

you hit it on the head. i don’t expect 7,8,10+ yards from Iosefa unless there is a gaping hole the size of the molokai channel. But when you need that 2-3 yards he is $$$. And the sucker looks like he can block.

  277. rich2176 September 4, 2011 6:06 pm

#273 – momo – I’ve emailed him twice with no response. It was the aol email address that tom k used. I’m holding 3 but they are gone if I don’t hear from him by tomorrow. I told him I only have 3 left. I’ve got other requests for 3. I could also sell the remaining inventory on Stubhub at a premium, bu that’s not good karma. I’m not always on the blog, so responding to my email at rich2176 at yahoo is best.

  278. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 4, 2011 6:07 pm

The UNLV game is that highly sought after to command a premium???

No wonder UNLV loves to schedule us.

  279. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 4, 2011 6:10 pm

I am so very excited to see what differences there will be once Bright and Brown get into the game this week.

  280. rich2176 September 4, 2011 6:12 pm

#48 – MIH – thanks for the link to the press conferences.

The only negative thing I’ve got to say is about the mish-mash background which contained no less than 12 paying sponsors and the “H” logo.

    Oceanic

    Farmers Insurance

    Outrigger

    Pepsi

    Under Armour

    Chervron

    Hawaiian Telecom

    California Hotel & Casino

    Bank of Hawaii

    Verizon

    Star Advertiser

    Bud Light

I wonder how much each sponsor paid so we have to look at that mess all season.

  281. rich2176 September 4, 2011 6:19 pm

#279 – iwwthm – it’s the only home game they don’t extend group discounts to. The Warrior fans account for about 40-50% of the attendence at UNLV games. So, yes, the tix are at a premium. Go to Stubhub and look at the prices. The most expensive face value ticket is $43. Those seats in section 107 are being offered at 2x – 3x. We’re in section 115. Check it out: http://www.stubhub.com/unlv-football-tickets/unlv-vs-hawaii-9-17-2011-1059142/

  282. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 4, 2011 6:24 pm

40-50%, wow. its basically a “neutral site” type game with those kinds of UH fans going up.

  283. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 4, 2011 6:30 pm

WatchedUCLA play Houston…I now realize why they don’t want to play us here in a H-H series or even a “one and done” game.

Neuheisel needs to go job hunting soon me thinks.

  284. rich2176 September 4, 2011 6:30 pm

It’s actually a Warrior home game. UNLV fans not too loud except for the intoxicated student section.

  285. tommui September 4, 2011 6:30 pm

The game is also on Oceanic Cable 1219 (I think – the one below 1222).But it’s half time.

  286. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 4, 2011 6:34 pm

    Huskies -3.5 against Hawaii.

Basically “even” but the 3 given for home field advantage. Husky stadium is definitely a hostile environment when they fill up.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see it go up to 6.

  287. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 4, 2011 6:34 pm

    tommui,

    yeah ESPNU-HD and ESNPU standard.

  288. A-House September 4, 2011 6:38 pm

    postmanke:

some one mentioned that Sterling was feeling sick on Wed and Thurs.

this may have contributed to his low number of carries.

  289. NYUH September 4, 2011 6:38 pm

Nice distribution of tackles. It’s always unnerving when your safety leads, but DLs and LBs got in the mix too.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sportspremium/sportsnewspremium/20110904_warrior_notebook_hawaii_vs_colorado.html?id=129208793

  290. A-House September 4, 2011 6:40 pm

    iwwthm:

it was mentioned on tv sports that UH is giving 3 pts.

is this incorrect and Udub giving 3? I’ll take the 3 any day.

  291. A-House September 4, 2011 6:42 pm

    iwwthm:

UH and Wisconsin are the 2 biggest money makers for UNLV – always sold out!

  319. wafan September 4, 2011 7:27 pm

I think there were two important items from last night.

CU has 18 consecutive road losses.

UH finally won in a nationally televised game.

  331. gmahoney September 4, 2011 8:04 pm

D1, what exactly did Coach Mack say? Sometimes I need to have “family meetings”.

  332. longdistance808 September 4, 2011 8:10 pm

For those traveling to attend the game in Seattle, here are a few suggestions of places to visit that you may or may not already know of:

    Piroshky Piroshky (Pike Place Market)

Beth’s Cafe (North Seattle on Aurora) – open 24 hours; the best 12 egg omelette you can share and still not finish.

Dick’s Burgers Drive-in (multiple locations throughout Seattle) – get a Double and a couple orders of their freshly cut fries… milkshake too whe you’re there.

Museum of Flight at Boeing in Tukwila.

Staying near Bellevue? Lucky you! Visit these places:

Purple Wine Bar (Kirkland marina and Bellevue Towers locations)

Taco Time (multiple locations) – two words: Crispy. Burrito. NomNomNom

Woodinville, WA – home of Red Hook brewery and many fine (and popular) wineries

That’s what I can think of off the top of my head.

    Go Warriors! Mush those Dawgs!

  333. tommui September 4, 2011 8:17 pm

Does anyone know whether ESPNU-HD and ESNPU standard showing the UH-CU game is shown nationally or is it just regional?

Just wondering if we are getting some publicity through the telecast in the east or midwest.

  334. d1shima September 4, 2011 8:25 pm

In Tsai post, he writes that he’s glad that Desmond Dean got a few reps. (4th paragraph).

Is he testing his readers in seeing who’s paying attention?

Two sources I checked show that Dean didn’t enter the game.

iwonder – unless Moniz gets injured during practice and is unable to play (knock on wood) i highly doubt that “Vegas’ would increase the odds to 6. Their mission is to get equal action on both sides. A lot of ‘wise-guys’ would jump on that in a New York minute.

good to hear that both Bright and Brown got cleared.

  369. Pride. September 5, 2011 3:29 am

Excited to watch the development of Sean Shigematsu who went from playing against Waimea and Kauai High to playing against Colorado and Washington. That’s quite a leap. I’m hoping that he ends his career being better than his dad Delroy, who was the starting right tackle for UNLV from ’78 – ’80.

  370. Pride. September 5, 2011 3:32 am

Also excited to watch Corey Paredes in his final year as a Warrior. Corey’s dad Lloyd scored two touchdowns in the 1976 O’ahu Prep Bowl while backing up the State back of the year David Hughes at Kamehameha.

  371. […] Hawaii might have more talent available, as two players who missed the season-opener could be on their way back. Stephen Tsai of the Warrior Beat for the Honolulu Star Adviser has more. […]

I think UH-rb Jackson ran a couple plays and I was impressed with his speed. I think he might be used more along with Iosefa against the Huskies….at least, I hope so; like I mentioned earlier…I hope the top three UH rb’s are utilized.

  381. Buger September 5, 2011 5:28 am

    Pomai,

Looks like 34-24 is already taken so I’ll change to:

    Hawaii 31 – Washington 24

  382. mctruck September 5, 2011 5:34 am

Reading that article which (kkobi425) posted; #272…..short passes by Eastern Washington qb, (mitchell), kept the Huskie “D” off-balanced, (60+passes).

I think UH should keep that in mind when they hook-up with the Huskies this Saturday.

  383. mctruck September 5, 2011 5:35 am

Eastern Washington qb was sacked just once according to the article.

  384. wafan September 5, 2011 5:37 am

    mctruck . . .

UW was talking about how quickly Mitchell got rid of the ball.

  385. d1shima September 5, 2011 5:38 am

    Great Morning All!

Howzit Pride.! Looks like you enjoyed watching the other 85% of the game! 😉 😆

  386. d1shima September 5, 2011 5:38 am

    wafan,

Enjoying your last day of “freedom”?

  387. d1shima September 5, 2011 5:40 am

    Bulla,

Stay safe, stay sane up there.

    GO WARRIORS!

    GO WILDCATS X 2!

  388. d1shima September 5, 2011 5:41 am

    Slugger,

According to the Na Koa site, today’s speaker is Rolo so probably no “family discussions” at the Willows. 😯

  389. mctruck September 5, 2011 5:42 am

NYUH, ur#279…that was very much appreciated…..tanks brah!!

  390. d1shima September 5, 2011 5:43 am

Still get about 14 more hours to celebrate the win.

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    HiHo…

  391. mctruck September 5, 2011 5:46 am

wafan, ur#387…..yes indeed, that was attributed to so many short passes instead of sitting in the pocket looking for the long home run passes.

Go get’um Warriors!!, alot of no huddle plays will exhaust the d-line as well.

  392. LizKauai (iPhone- At PHX) September 5, 2011 5:54 am

PHX. Time to get off and sprint to the next gate.

  393. Kekoa September 5, 2011 5:56 am

Coach Rolo usually brings a few well-edited offense gems to dissect on the big screen. Can’t wait to hear his commentary as the plays roll Cross the screen.

  394. Kekoa September 5, 2011 6:00 am

Liz~ AGAIN!…I hope they don’t give your seat away like last time. Actually that earned you a free ticket, huh?

  403. JuanitaDawg September 5, 2011 9:53 am

Husky fan here. One thing to keep in mind when looking at the stats from the EWU-UW game is that the UW secondary does not have a lot of quality depth and was depleted by the end of the game. Richardson, the usual starting corner opposite Trufant, was/is out with a High Ankle sprain suffered in camp. His replacement, Ducre, went out with cramps, and HIS replacement, Glenn, suffered the same fate. They were torching a 3rd backup corner, with nobody else good enough or available enough to even field a nickel package. The results tell the tale. A 43 yard TD strike on a 3rd and 26. 20 yard completion on a 3rd and 19.

EWU’s 3 recievers that burned us and the QB are all upperclassmen, Junior WR 6’5″, Junior WR 6’3″, another Junior WR 6’3″ and the Senior Mitchell. If you want to repeat their success you’ll have to repeat the success they had over the top with fades. 7 completions of over 20 yards, a lot of them good catches in tight space. They may not have had the talent to stack up in the running game, but they were dynamite in the pitch & catch. No lack of talent there for EWU, that’s for sure.
