Sunday ramblings

• Ever come home late, and you’re really hungry, and you open the fridge and — voila! — there’s an uneaten, I dunno, teri chicken plate  in there?
And as you reach for it, somebody yells: “Hey, don’t touch that. It’s not for you.”
Well, that new $30-million-plus addition to Bronco Stadium, where every booth is  a Ritz-Carlton suite, that’s Boise State’s proverbial plate lunch.
It’s hard to imagine the Broncos spent all of that money on the WAC. No,the Broncos want to eat that plate lunch somewhere else.
(Yes, yes, that was the worst analogy ever, but I just came off my fourth road trip in seven weeks, so I’m a little groggy.)
• Kealoha Pilares’ absence showed why he is the Warriors’ best offensive threat this season. Pilares suffered an inury to the top of his right foot during the Boise State game. He did not play in the final three quarters. Pilares is the Warriors’ best post-catch runner, and he prefers to play slotback. The coaches acknowledge that he is a  better fit there. But at slotback, it can’t be controlled how many touches Pilares will receive in a game. It depends on the down-and-distance, the coverage, the read-progression order, the protection, and so forth. At running back, if the Warriors want to give Pilares the ball, they give him the ball.
• Offensive coodinator Ron Lee said he has no regrets going for it on fourth-and-1 in Boise State’s red zone. It was the Warriors opening drive, and they had the momentum. His regret was in calling an option pitch to the right. He felt if the same play went to the left, it might have resulted in a touchdown.

    Good Morning all…2 or 3!

  3. Committed Road Warrior October 19, 2008 8:59 am

    Third?

  4. Maverick October 19, 2008 9:00 am

Would like to see an birdeye’s view of the formation from that 4th and 1 play with the X and O’s.
Did they go off a quick snap count, or was Funaki able to call an audible ? Though, the noise probably was the factor for changing the play.
Just give the ball to Rego next time for the straight up the gut conversion.

  5. Hawaiianbod October 19, 2008 9:01 am

    top 10!

  6. Maverick October 19, 2008 9:02 am

When the announcers and all of us watching in TV land shouted “NO” go for the field go, maybe the nielson ratings box should have a direct feed to the OC booth.

  7. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:03 am

    five! five! five dollar footlongs…

  8. jm2375 October 19, 2008 9:04 am

    Top 10!

Morning Tsai-kos! Another lovely day in paradise!

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:04 am

    ate!ate! a five dollar footlong!?

  10. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:05 am

That’s what I get for posting actual sentences instead of just going for the glory.

  11. Maverick October 19, 2008 9:05 am

Hmmm. Guess DPK was denied the untouched plate lunch in the fridge too.
We now know what your eating for breaky :>

  12. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:09 am

Good morning neo, cavewarrior, Maverick, Hbod, and jm2375! Howz youz this very fine mornin’? 🙂

  13. Ronnie October 19, 2008 9:12 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Family!

    Good Morning Warrior Nation!

Back home now, watching St Louis beat the cowboys…

It was great being able to hang out with my Tsaiko Family in Boise. I think my sister understands why I’m such a Tsaiko now. 😀

I’ve decided that I’m going back to boise in 2 years, and 2 years after that, and 2 years after that… I’ll be there when we beat them on the smurf turf for the first time!

  14. Committed Road Warrior October 19, 2008 9:13 am

Davone Bess scores his first NFL TD on a 7-yard reception from Chad Pennington. ‘Fins still down by a TD late in the 3rd Q.

  15. Maverick October 19, 2008 9:14 am

    DPK –
No appetite yet for moi’. You know, the 48 hr. rule. Should return by manana.
I know we could have beaten Boise if we played 4 quarters of no turnovers.
I personally thought before the game started was to get into field goal range as much as possible, and let Iceman do his voodoo on every 4th down.

  16. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:14 am

DPK learned what we all learned: $5 footlong sandwiches cost more in Hawaii.

  17. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:16 am

    Maverick,

Bein’ the deep artistic interlectual that I am I was merely tryin’ to be clever with the numerical placement of my posts. Alas, I have failed to do so, but this is the life of a tortured artist. Breaky is gonna be the usual, one of my favorites actually: oatmeal. 😆

  18. Ronnie October 19, 2008 9:16 am

    Yee Haw for Davone!!!

  19. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:17 am

    Ronnie:
It was wonderful to see you in Boise.
I apologize for having to do the drop-and-run, but I had “Ferd” in the car, and I’m not sure if I left the windows down and gave him water.
I invited him to meet the gang, but I think he’s afraid they would flash the quotation-mark finger signs when they see him.

  20. FloridaTed October 19, 2008 9:19 am

    Morning/afternoon, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

So, ST, you also partake of the notion that Boise will bolt to the MWC? I’m really not so sure if that is the best move for them. Outside of football, what do they really have to offer as an institution?

If they do bolt, where will that leave the WAC and especially Hawaii? Are we again left to holding the leftovers?

I sure hope that the future re-alignment of eight 12 team leagues will happen sooner than later, that would be Hawaii’s best hope for their future.

Is going independent even an option?

I think the MWC is drinking the BCS Kool-aid, if they actually believe that the BCS will give them an automatic bid, just because they’ll add Boise and/or Fresno.

The NCAA truly wrecked Hawaii’s uniqueness by giving everybody a 12th game. Any inkling of UH thinking, should the worst case scenario come to bare?

  21. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:20 am

Then again, nobody joined me, “Ferd” and Jason Kaneshiro at Denny’s at 1:30 in the morning.
I called Rich2176, but he said he was getting ready for bed.
And Stretch had to rest up for his flight that was 13 hours away.
“Dear Webster’s, please revise the definition of male bonding …”

  22. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:20 am

    Tsai,
I just have them trim the sandwich down to around 10 inches and then pro-rate the price to $5.

    Ok. I’m sorry, that’s a lie. I don’t have that kind of power. 🙁

  23. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:23 am

    Florida Ted:
Boise’s president already declared his intent on bolting.
But it’s like all those guys who got excited when Drew Barrymore split up with her boyfriend. Boise State, in its mind, thinks it has a chance. But it doesn’t.

  24. jm2375 October 19, 2008 9:24 am

Morning ST, DPK, Ronnie, Mav and everyone else lurking!

Watching da Giants beat up on da 49ers. Will someone please beat up on the Giants? Are we gonna have to wait for the Redskins to do it?

Looking at the rankings – I don’t see an ACC or Big East Team above Utah & BSU. Does that mean might be able to get 2 non-BCS teams into da money bowls?

BTW, I love FT’s idea of the play-off system. We need to send at least Idaho back down to D1AA. 16K stadium capacity? Some basketball venues are bigger! sheeesh…

  25. Maverick October 19, 2008 9:24 am

    ST –
Do you think Benson might of rolled up the car windows on purpose while Ferd was taking a nap inside? Just wondering after that Benson State University remark.
I’m still laughing about that and the “No Smile” reply after.

  26. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:25 am

DPK, you know, my family reads this blog, so every time you say, “Tsai,” a couple of people go, “huh? you talkin’ to me?”

  27. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:26 am

Lessee if I gots this right: Use the money that you’ve earned from beatin’ up the rest of the WAC on the way to a BCS victory to fix up yer stadium with its illegal blue cheatin turf, so you can bolt to another conference where you won’t be beatin everybody up.

    BRILLIANT!!! 😆

  28. Hawaiianbod October 19, 2008 9:27 am

Good morning Tsaikos! Hope everyone is blessed with a peaceful and relaximg Sunday.

Safe journey to all the traveling Tsaikos.

Congratulations to the Wildcats – especially to the Beast and #2 son! Good job – way to REPRESENT!

May all the Warriors heal their mind, body and soul.

Kelli girl – are you still alive and kicking? 🙂

btw, Garret – you are NOT and idiot.

  29. Ronnie October 19, 2008 9:27 am

Stephen – it was great seeing you too! I’m sorry you and “Ferd” missed the birthday cake. It was really sweet that my family got me a birthday cake and sang “Happy Birthday” to me. 😀 😀 And Dennis, the bartender gave me a shot of tequila as a birthday present!

The win would have been a great present. But just being at the game was good.

  30. Maverick October 19, 2008 9:28 am

    Ted-
This college shuffle when it comes to sports programs is such a business now, all the behind the door ideas and decisions have the same suprises as corporate decisions.
We all know what is best, but is what usually is finalized is what’s best for the decision makers, not the people.

  31. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:28 am

I don’t think Benson is a BSU homer.
Then again, I don’t think he was too sad that his only team with a BCS shot remains unbeaten.

  32. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:30 am

Well, Ronnie we could all go to a lot more UH games if you moved back to Hawaii …

  33. Maverick October 19, 2008 9:30 am

    DPK,

Next time I catch you early on this blog, I will ask, “How’z your Farina this morning.”

    Good move with the oatmeal.

  34. Hawaiianbod October 19, 2008 9:31 am

    relaximg=relaxing

  35. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:31 am

If you and your family moved back here, Ronnie, then I’ll buy you a bottle of tequila.
Of course, that would mean Rich2176 would have to organize things in LoCal, and he does have that need-a-beauty-rest curfew.

  36. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:32 am

I’m GLAD the family reads my posts here, Stephen Tsai. I hope they DO read the posts and think that it pertains to each of them individually, because what I post is here “a daily must read” for all of humanity, the family Tsai included. 😉

  37. jm2375 October 19, 2008 9:35 am

    dpk – #36 lmao! 😆

  38. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:36 am

    We’re fortunate DPK posts here.
Because when his novel sells, and it’s a fabulous read I’m told by someone named Rich2176, then he might Boise State us and he’ll leave for another blog.
Or he might start wearing a muumuu.
It can go either way when you’re a published author.

  39. Stretch October 19, 2008 9:36 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Had a great time in Boise with the Tsaikos. I will have to make more road games in the future, just not this season. Utah St & New Mexico, umm…I’ll pass.

I will be sending some of the pictures to SteveM to post.

  40. jm2375 October 19, 2008 9:37 am

Ooooh, SF takes blocked FG to da house! Dey catching up! hehehe

  41. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:38 am

Who wants a team with cheatin blue turf anyway? Put ’em in the PAC 10, take away their blue turf and give ’em a reasonably tough OOC schedule and we’ll see what’s what.

  42. Kelli October 19, 2008 9:39 am

Hawaiianbod: Oh yes, I’m alive. I don’t have much of a voice (to be honest, I sound like a man). This brings a story to mind… I had laryngitis right before I was about to leave for the Sugar Bowl last year. I was desperate and went to the doctor for help. Good thing he’s a UH football fan (he went to the Sugar Bowl, too) because I got some steroids and that helped me to get my voice back in time for the game.

  43. Ronnie October 19, 2008 9:39 am

Stephen – I’m still hoping and praying I can move home, although my sister won’t be too pleased. Stretch mentioned moving home a couple of times, and she didn’t seem too pleased. 😆

The good news is Hawaiian has weekend fares from LAX – HNL for less than $400. My boys and I will probably be home for the last game!!!!! Yee Haw!!!!

  44. Stretch October 19, 2008 9:42 am

no wonder she was giving me “stink eye”.

BTW – the Football Banquet is Dec 7 at the Shearton Waikiki.

  45. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:43 am

OK, if we buy another bottle of tequila, can we get the sister to move, too?

  46. Maverick October 19, 2008 9:43 am

To many Boise fans, the grass is always bluer on the other side of the chain link fence. And once they get there, they’ll eventually wan’t to dig out somewhere else.

Hawaii counts there blessings everyday that the WAC is there for support.

  47. Ronnie October 19, 2008 9:44 am

Hawaiian is offering $383 RT for that weekend! That plus the banquet would cost about the same as taking the boys to NMSU’s game… Both said they would rather go home 😆

  48. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:45 am

Don’t forget we’re going to Na Koa meeting tomorrow. I’m confident I’m going to win the helmet, which means it goes to The Twins’ distribution center.

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:46 am

Ok President Tsai, lets get this straight once and for all.

Muumuus, maybe, but only once in a great while, when I’m feeling pretty.

Another blog, NEVER!!! (This may be good news or bad news, you’ll have to decide for yourself…)

  50. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:47 am

I forgot to mention that coach Mack was asking about Rob25’s hubby. He was touched by the story of his third tour of duty.
I know coach Mack’s emotions were real. Because when I told him my story about being ditched by Rich2176 and Stretch, I got the same blank stare Benson gave “Ferd.”

  51. Ronnie October 19, 2008 9:48 am

Stephen – I keep trying to get her to move with me. I’ll keep working on it!

  52. Stretch October 19, 2008 9:48 am

  53. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:50 am

Besides, other blogs don’t have fabulous customized shot glasses given away free by guy named Stretch.

  54. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:50 am

    Aw, we can’t lose DPK.
Now, if only Sonny From Kapolei would come back …

  55. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 9:51 am

    Stretch:
    I’ll treat DPK and Jason.

  56. chawan_cut October 19, 2008 9:54 am

    although miami lost.

  57. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:54 am

    Stephen,

You’re right about Pilares though, he is undoubtedly the go to guy on offense. He is so smooth getting up the field. Very “fluid”.

  58. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 9:59 am

    Stephen Tsai:

What time do I pick you up, Jay-Boy?!

  59. Hawaiianbod October 19, 2008 10:02 am

Kelli girl – thanks for checking in. Your Tsaiko family wants you to get all better. The Warriors need your “voice” on Saturday. LOL.

  60. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 10:02 am

    DPK:
I should be there a little before noon, so call me before you get there.

  61. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 10:05 am

If Boise or any other team wants to bolt, let ’em I say.
The only team I care about practices in Manoa, are called the Warriors, and they don’t rely on cheatin’ blue turf to dominate at home. Nuff said.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  62. d1島 October 19, 2008 10:06 am

Aloha Kakahiaka- this is LizKauai from the d1 hale 😆

  63. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 10:07 am

    Wow, thanks Mr. Tsai.

  64. d1島 October 19, 2008 10:08 am

    Hi DPK!
Hi ST! You are sooo funny..

    What’s the prognosis for Pilares??

    GO REDSKINS!

  65. djmitcho October 19, 2008 10:08 am

Aloha Tsaikos! It was great to meet everyone that I meet this weekend.
Thanks to d1, rich, stretch, ronnie and anne, bns and wife, committed road warrior, chawan_cut and the Estes’ for making my first Tsaiko experience a good one even though the Warriors came out on the short end of the score board.
To my cheering partner ronnie, I think we gave the UH cheerleaders something new to do with the first down thing.
c_c, you were happy when you were on tv. We were cheering after the Boise fumble.

  66. Da Punchbowl Kid October 19, 2008 10:11 am

Is that really you Liz? I see that the name on the post reads d1. Are you sure you’re not d1 havin’ another one of his fantasies about bein a beautiful lady from Kaua’i who has a fabulous voice? Say somethin’ only Liz would know, if you really are her…

  67. Stretch October 19, 2008 10:14 am

dj – great to meet you this past weekend. no forget to email me your address then I’ll send you the stickers

  68. A-House October 19, 2008 10:14 am

    TO ALL THE WAC PRESIDENTS:

Since the Boise State President has pubically stated his intent to move to the MWC, do him a favor, NOW, and release Boise State from the WAC effective 1/1/2009. If you want to be nice, AND I WOULD NOT, give them an effective date of 9/1/09.

Then, the WAC will have the option of “adding” another school OR allow the remaining WAC memebers to fill in a home “non-conference” game to replace Boise State on their schedule with a BCS school OR compress the “conference schedule” to allow an openning at the start or end of to fill the open date. This will allow additional revenue for each member school.

MAKE BOISE STATE’S PRESIDNET WISH COME TRUE EARLY!!!!!!!

  69. d1島 October 19, 2008 10:14 am

d1 is on da plane home. I was having fun with Mrs. d1 last night and just got up to print out my boarding pass…

welcome back to all travelers. glad you’all got back home safely whether it be Hi, Calif, Wn, or Oregon.

Hawaiianbod wot next tgate is in two weeks going ante up?

  75. Stretch October 19, 2008 10:27 am

dj – got it. i will mail some stuff out to you.

  76. brew808 October 19, 2008 10:28 am

Aiyaaaaahhhhh…… Niners are really bad! This has been a very, very disappointing football weekend for some of us….. Mike Nolan (and maybe JT) shouldn’t bother making the flight back to SFO – IMHO 🙁 😥 😐

  77. Stretch October 19, 2008 10:32 am

Something else I just forgot to mention before about the Boise field. They also have blue padding on the endzone walls which also makes it difficult to see the players. I guess it works both ways since the Boise offense has to be able to see the players but practicing with it helps.

  78. jm2375 October 19, 2008 10:35 am

Sorry ST, but at the risk of getting SMU’d, why da heo are they showing such a worthless game like Jets-Raiders? Aren’t there any better AFC games?

  79. brew808 October 19, 2008 10:37 am

    Lions at Houston? 🙄

  80. FloridaTed October 19, 2008 10:38 am

    Tsai-Meister (23),

I hope we’re right on this one.

It’s the old story of the guy who has a great girlfriend, but then falls in love with the cheerleader, just because she smiled at him once, while all the while she’s laughing at him with her friends behind his back.

The best way to bring Boise into the realm of reality would be for the rest of the WAC to catch up to them, at least the top five. That should humble them a little.

Right now they think they’re the neighborhood bully, with a very big, puffed up chest. They need a smack in the mouth now and then, like Hawaii did to them last year. Because of the rest of the league, they think the WAC chamionship is their birthright.

  81. koakane™ October 19, 2008 10:39 am

last note on subject…as much as I like tyler he is still blowing his chances. if he’s injured still, my bad. kudos to the coaches for sticking with Inoke, keep developing da bruddah and mold him soon he will be a complete QB. remember it take a team to win and there are oddah puka to patch so let the coaches and team be.

nuff said alojoah have a good morning.

be back in a while have a morning conference with parents
play nice, be good and think pure thoughts about this upcoming game

  82. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 10:43 am

    jm:
hey, i actually know the answer to this one.
KGMB bought a package of Raider games, so they’re obligated to show them.
But, you’re right, I think me and Gary Dickman are the only ones interested in this game.
And I’m less interested now that the Raiders are driving on the J-E-T-S.

  83. not far away anymore October 19, 2008 10:43 am

Utah #11 and BSU #12 on the first BCS poll. TCU comes in at #14.

  84. djmitcho October 19, 2008 10:44 am

    jm2375,
I get to watch the colts-packers game for my 2nd cbs game

  85. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 10:46 am

My bad. That was a punt.
    LOL.
    Time to get new trifocals.

  86. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 10:47 am

Utah still has to play TCU and BYU.
BSU still has to play, uh…Utah State?

  87. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 10:48 am

But do you get the McCoy guy from Law & Order doing ads for Ameritrade on your game?

  88. jm2375 October 19, 2008 10:49 am

    ST – boooorrrrrinnng! 😀 zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Isn’t some other way to show da good games esp since we can’t get NFL Network? I guess I’m a little miffed cuz the Redskins are hardly ever on TV. Why buy Raiders games? They’ve stunk up da place for years and will keep stinkin’ it up till a certain owner departs.

  89. Stretch October 19, 2008 10:51 am

As much as it hurts to do, we as WAC members have to cheer for Benson State to run the table and Utah to falter somewhere along the line.

Does anyone know if OC16 is going to show a replay of the Kailua vs Mililani football game?? I need to watch something with excitement.

  95. brew808 October 19, 2008 11:07 am

Stretch – Belated Happy Anniversary wishes to you and the Mrs. I’ve been wondering…. how/why the heck did you get hitched in the middle of football season ???? – especially being the loyal sports connoisseur that you are??? 😯 🙄 😀

  96. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 11:10 am

Did I mention that Bess invited Mouton to attend a Dolphin game during the bye week?

  97. KonaGirl October 19, 2008 11:11 am

Boise can be put in their place this week with a win by SJSU. Everyone is forgetting, SJSU is still leading the WAC…and I don’t doubt Tomey for a minute…his team will want the win as badly as he does!

I just watched the game again and KUDOS to Salas…what catches!!!

Question: if Funaki is “easy to read” because his eyes are always looking right at the receiver, then why doesn’t he wear a tinted shield like Colt used to do? I remember when Colt started wearing his, defenders could no longer see his eyes and it seemed that completions increased and interceptions decreased.

  101. brew808 October 19, 2008 11:15 am

    Thanks, KG!

  104. FloridaTed October 19, 2008 11:23 am

The only way SanJose is beating Boise is a melt down by the smurfs. They should have never beaten Hawaii. The Boise D will shut down the Spartans Offense. New Mexico States offense will sputter against a tough defense, which gives me a lot of hope for the Nevada and NMST games.

  105. FloridaTed October 19, 2008 11:24 am

104, San Jose that is (should have never beaten Hawaii).

  108. Rob25 October 19, 2008 11:35 am

Hey, Frank is hoping that Oakland can get on a roll!

WTH, I’m going to watch the Cowboys lose in Big “D”

Glad that you got back safely Stretch, but take those words back…no cheering for Benson State here! OK if all the other BCS busters lose then I will cheer for the WAC…but it will be hard!

Ronnie 😯 Can’t imagine watching an entire game with that cheating blue field. I prefer the atmosphere of Fresno at this point…much nicer and more to do. Just come home already! I’ll bring some Coronas to chase back the tequila that ST is getting you. And don’t forget to bring the Cristal…we can celebrate another Warrior Football season!

If I’m not mistaken, Jason bought a season Na Koa luncheon pass so the freebie offered by ST needs to be passed along to someone else. See #55.

I plan to attend tomorrow’s Na Koa luncheon since I want to get a better sense of what happened on Friday – or didn’t. The Tsaikos sit at one or two tables of ten at the back of the room next to the buffet line. There does seem to be a fairly decent selection of open seats closer to the video projection screen at the front of the room.

This afternoon, DrDoc and I will be going to the Hapa Benefit Concert at the Windward Adventist School where Wena & Friends will continue to get folks excited about the Little Learners Pre-School which, when last checked, is still caught in the morass of the City Hall bureaucracy. Tickets are $15.

Long day yesterday – after a half day Friends of Falls of Clyde planning retreat, we spent the rest of the day at the Hawai`i International film Festival including Bob Marley: Exodus 77 last night. Amazing how his music continues to resonate – perhaps we can do some Jawaiian at one of the T-Gate sessions.

    From yesterday’s blog

  111. ai-eee-soos October 19, 2008 11:44 am

    KonaGirl – #97.

Agreed – Funaki should wear the tinted shield.

    Also, don’t put on the white makeup under the eyes;

    looks like two beacons.

Wonder how come the coaches no can figure this out.

  112. Stretch October 19, 2008 11:45 am

For anyone falling asleep watching the Jets & Raiders can watch OC16. They are replaying the Waipahu vs Kaimuki game. At least both teams scored touchdowns in the first Qtr.

  113. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 11:51 am

Doesn’t Stretch have a tee time or something?

  114. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 11:52 am

Mouton is going to the Dolphins game.

  115. Stretch October 19, 2008 11:52 am

I would rather be hacking away on the golf course than watch this pitiful game between the Jets and Raiders…..

  116. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 11:58 am

    Hey, Jets vs. Raiders.
    Dick Enberg on the mic.
    Man, I love the 80s.

  117. Stretch October 19, 2008 12:05 pm

I recall in the begining of the season that Mouton would be part of the offense. I don’t remember seeing him on any offensive plays.

  118. madeinhawaii October 19, 2008 12:09 pm

Looks like Boise has already committed themselves to the next level… BCS or MWC.. or wherever. They are putting the Cart before the horse, maybe .. but that darn cart is filled with the horse’s favorite treats. It isn’t just fan support, it’s school admin, alumni, and community. Plain and simple, it’s obvious that they have realized that in order to be a first-class program, you need a first-class facility.

  119. madeinhawaii October 19, 2008 12:10 pm

    Stretch..

Doesn’t Mouton have a sprained ankle, too?

  120. KonaGirl October 19, 2008 12:11 pm

    ai-eee-soos:

    I wonder the same…

  121. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 12:12 pm

They were going to use Mouton as a slot, but he’s been overworked, so they haven’t done that.
He was going to be the punt returner, too, but then he got dinged up against Boise.

  122. ai-eee-soos October 19, 2008 12:16 pm

    Florida Ted: howzit …

Re: Boise St – if they want to leave the conference, let ’em !

Just have them pay back, to the conference, the TV money. There’s some legal mumbo-jumbo about this which I don’t understand.

The WAC will survive without Benson State U.

It’ll be down to 8 teams, with a 7 game conf sked.

But it will more difficult for Hawaii to sked 6 OOC games, due to costs and the lack of available teams.

Yup, if BSU wants to leave, GO already.

  123. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 12:17 pm

Boise State used its BCS season to sign top prospects from across the country and upgrade facilities.
UH used its BCS season to hire a coaching staff and construct a recruiting class in a month, and to pay down a nearly $5 million deficit incurred by the previous administration.

  124. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 12:18 pm

I don’t think anyone wants Boise State to leave the conference.
Besides, there are no replacements. There are no available schools in the West.
Sac State, Portland State, Cal Poly are all in a lower division.

  125. KonaGirl October 19, 2008 12:21 pm

I haven’t said this in a while, but Herman Frazier was an idiot…

    Thanks, I feel better.

  126. madeinhawaii October 19, 2008 12:21 pm

Well, if Boise does fly the coop… what school would be willing to replace Boise? One of the former WAC teams that left? UC Davis who was once considering D-1? Who’d make a nice fit?

  127. madeinhawaii October 19, 2008 12:25 pm

heh… ST answered my question before I could finish typing it..

  128. madeinhawaii October 19, 2008 12:25 pm

  130. madeinhawaii October 19, 2008 12:27 pm

Whoah.. Boise is #12 in the BCS ranking already.

And Texas and Alabama just need to win out to be in the title game. So Alabama might be playing another quarterback named Colt for all the marbles, eh?

  131. madeinhawaii October 19, 2008 12:32 pm

Texas shows what caliber of players are available in Texas for SMU.

Congrats to Davone Bess for his first touchdown as an NFL pro. Make us proud, Davone!

  132. Jack Flash October 19, 2008 12:43 pm

I don’t think Bozo St. will be invited to any other conferences. The only thing they have to offer is football, and conferences want a more balanced sport university (like Hawaii.) That loss sucked on friday, but I think the team will rebound strong to finish out the season and get into the Hawaii Bowl.
    GO WARRIORS!

  133. ai-eee-soos October 19, 2008 12:44 pm

    ST: re #124.

    I was hoping that Sac State was gearing up to D1;
they already compete in the WAC in baseball.

In football, I think they sked at least one body-bag (money) game a year. They cancelled an at Hawaii game (within the past 10-years?).

I was also hoping that Portland State would step up, and given the impetus generated by Jerry Glanville’s arrival, things would pick up. Perhaps, in a couple of years, things will look better.

Eastern Wash also skeds 1 or 2 body-bag games a year. I was hoping they would like to step up.

5 of the 9 WAC schools came from the Big Sky; if we need more members, that’s where they will come from.

Problem is – their average attendance doesn’t meet D1 status, among other things.

Heck, several WAC schools barely meet ths attendance figure.

Nevada Reno had only 13,00+ at their Homecoming Game.

    Auwe !!!

  134. ai-eee-soos October 19, 2008 12:57 pm

    madeinhawaii: re#126.

Dennis Halloran said UC Davis is gearing up for D1,

but, they wanna join the PAC 10.

I was hoping that they would join the WAC, and

single handedly, uplift the WAC’s academic level.

Alas, I guess that’s not to be.

Would have been great to have the Grape Stompers in the WAC.

Nevada Reno had only 13,000+ for their homecoming game.

  138. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 1:12 pm

I would suggest a trade of Boise State and Nevada for UNLV and San Diego State, but I don’t think the MWC would go for it.
But the MWC doesn’t want Boise. It doesn’t do anything for the TV market. The MWC already has the mountain zone covered.

  139. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2008 1:13 pm

Has any conference ever traded teams?

  147. XxFaithxX October 19, 2008 1:22 pm

    elllo everyone.

Said my peace about the Benson st. game, but have one thing to add about the WAC and teams moving out/in.

If Benson State U. wants to move, the WAC and us can’t really do anything BUT win vs. them. They start to lose, they won’t have the cred to move anywhere. You don’t see Idaho talking about moving to the MWC right?

AFA teams moving in, the WAC can no longer support teams that want to move up in the divisions. The WAC should raid the MWC for teams. We might only be able to get the lower tier teams, but its better then waiting for Portland state to become a player, etc.

IDK, just all the negativity surrounding UH and such is getting to be too much. After losing only like what? 3-4 games the past two years, the fans this year are acting like spoiled brats. It took JJ 9 years to get to where UH was fairly dominant….Give Mac and crew at least a year to get going…JJ left our cupboards bare…QB, O-Line….he never stocked the RB for us as well as Safeties..

  148. Stretch October 19, 2008 1:23 pm

  171. Postmanke October 19, 2008 2:09 pm

Sorry i know the game is over but i am watching it again and was just wondering.. Since the topic is Sunday Ramblings…
Is it just me or does the offense do not motion / audible as much as we have in the pass? Funaki is struggling but it is hard to fault him. I’m studying offensive plays and we are doing a terrible job of reading non disguised blitz packages. LB1’s and DE’s are having too much fun out there. question, Motion does help in reads for seeking man coverage and aids in breaking down blitzs right? Our pre snap reads are terrible. As a result we are seeing our protection and formation being broken down to the point where we must adjust and change our protection scheme every possession. But then thats our main problem, it’s hard to find any major adjustments being made throughout the game. Sure Coach Lee is throwing over top to break tight underneath coverage but that does us no good if we cant protect. teams our zeroing in and shutting us out as the game goes on because we are failing to adjust to the defense. – which is the premise for this offense! – adjusting to the D. No matter who’s playing QB, no matter what version of the shoot we play we are not going to succeed if we don’t recognize blitz packages we will never get to the hot reads. I think the play calling is good until D’s adjust. They adjust and we offer the same play calling and seem desperate… It would be nice to see an overhaul in the protection package / scheme. Our brand of the shoot is generic at best. Lee is quoted as saying “Honestly, I don’t feel any pressure,” ..WHAT?!? I am losing sleep over trying to figure out protection schemes and I am just a fan. Coach better take more responsibility for the breakdowns and stop leaving it up to the recv, qb to make the reads. Do something where it can be noticed. Stack, motion, more audibles, under center, spread the line farther apart – make the ends go wider. Also D’s are rotating as much as 10 players constantly. Would it hurt to hurry it up a little?

Anyway enuff already. hope to see big improvement vs Nevada’s stingy run defense. I have watched Nevada’s D. Big plays can be made esp if recv dont run into the bait coverage. I’m confidant that Funaki can make the post snap progression reads against this defense as backside seems can be exploited for big plays. All starts with the pre snap reads and protection. My biggest concern is Kaepernick skipping to his Lou for big running gains. This dude has more ball hiding skills than a Mahu. Dangerous. Coach def lit a fire under is okole last week and will be ready to play.

Sorry Coach Lee, but I dont believe you when you say you dont “feel any pressure” I dont know any coach that does not feel “the pressure”. You DO feel the pressure and the play calling seems more desperate than no pressure..

I know its sunday but had to say that after losing sleep trying to figure out protection schemes and reading that crap of “feeling no pressure” this morning.

  172. Garret October 19, 2008 2:18 pm

Good to see TCU at #15. A little insurance for non-BCS conferences if TCU beats Utah and Boise loses along the way.

BTW, there’s a Cadillac here in San Angelo painted TX burnt orange with longhorns on the hood. Hmmm…I wonder how much a custom paint job with an “H” ornament would cost on my ‘88 toyota wagon?

    99club,

As long as someone breaks into the BCS this year, UH will make extra money. However, UH gets more if BSU makes it…

Funny story about that Cadillac. I saw a LOT of cars like that in Austin, especially for the rich folks who had the on-campus parking on game days!

A friend of mine completely carpeted his home for literally pennies per square foot. A College Station (where A&M is if anyone doesn’t know) store had a large amount of burnt orange carpet, which for some reason nobody in College Station wanted! He bought the entire supply for basically nothing…

  173. Garret October 19, 2008 2:19 pm

BCS Guru predicted that BSU would be #12 in the BCS rankings and was right on with that prediction…

  174. Garret October 19, 2008 2:21 pm

    A-House,

If the WAC kicked out BSU right now and BSU made the BCS game, does that mean you want them to keep all $9.5 mil instead of their $4 mil cut? Notre Dame is independent and gets to keep all of its BCS money…

  175. Garret October 19, 2008 2:22 pm

Tim Chang mention in this article about non-white QBs.

  176. Garret October 19, 2008 2:24 pm

Article about a player from Hawaii, though one that didn’t play for UH.

The proposed wall in question was four stories high. Too high and apparently too much for Chris Kemoeatu and older brother Ma’ake to help build.

Manako Kemoeatu gave his two oldest sons only two days to carry various supplies — rocks, cement, water — to the top of a steep hill so he could build the wall. On the second day, however, Chris and Ma’ake were both so exhausted they became convinced they couldn’t finish their portion of a job that didn’t pay very well in the first place.

That isn’t the point, Manako told his sons. If you don’t finish, how will we feed our family with the money I’m supposed to earn for building the wall? He made them a promise: If they somehow completed the Herculean task, any other challenges they faced in life would seem small by comparison.

“Dad is one of the big reasons why Chris is successful today,” said Ma’ake, a starting defensive tackle for Carolina who entered the league in 2002 as an undrafted free agent and joined the Panthers after four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. “Chris worked hard to get where he’s at. Dad always told us if you work really hard, don’t be surprised if you get to where you want to go.”

In Tonga — a group of 36 inhabited islands located south of Samoa – rugby was his father’s sport of choice. Manako Kemoeatu forbid his sons from playing American football. He demanded they concentrate on academics to have a chance for a better life.

Chris, however, had other ideas. He would rush home from school and finish his homework and chores so he could sneak outside and play flag football without his parents’ knowledge.

“Growing up, we didn’t (have a) TV in our house,” Chris said. “We couldn’t afford it. I didn’t really understand football until I went to my friend’s house and watched it on TV. I loved played playing it more than I did watching it.”

Eventually, Manako came around to his sons’ way of thinking and attended their high school games.

“Dad didn’t even know you could get a (college) scholarship through football,” said Chris, who was named Hawaii’s top high school defensive player in 2000. “That’s when he started supporting it.”

    Garret-

I think Boise got their carpet the same way.

I also like that there are three non-BCS teams above the highest ACC and Big East teams. Looking great for another buster this year.

    jm2375-
RE: your earlier question from #24: only one non-BCS team can get an automatic bid. Only way to get two in is for the second one to meet the eligibility and get picked as an “at large” team. Yeah, I know…figure the odds.

  178. madeinhawaii October 19, 2008 2:37 pm

    99Club…

Problem is, there hasn’t been many .. or any years where there were more than one team meeting the eligibility. If there were two more more back-to-back years, then the BCS might feel obliged to make other arrangements. But for them.. “If it ain’t broke… don’t fix it.”

  179. Jason October 19, 2008 3:00 pm

If I’m not mistaken, Jason bought a season Na Koa luncheon pass so the freebie offered by ST needs to be passed along to someone else. See #55.

Stephen can’t give me $15 in cash? 😛

Postmanke: I think your concern about the lack of motioning is legit. That’s something I was thinking of asking Coach tomorrow at the Nā Koa lunch.

Congrats to Davone for his first TD! Now, I wish he had done it against any other team but the Ravens, cause that’s my fantasy football defense. But that’s okay, the pick six helped me out. 🙂

  180. Edward October 19, 2008 3:08 pm

Offensive coodinator Ron Lee said he has no regrets going for it on fourth-and-1 in Boise State’s red zone. It was the Warriors opening drive, and they had the momentum. His regret was in calling an option pitch to the right. He felt if the same play went to the left, it might have resulted in a touchdown.

The fact that, evidently, the QB has not been coached to read the defensive front and change the play from one side to the other if conditions warrant, is revealing. That is Coaching 101.

  181. A-House October 19, 2008 3:11 pm

    Garret:

Yes, let them keep the money, but the current WAC rules say that all “extra $” are to be shared. If keeping the $ is so important, then kick them out effective 2/1/09.

Unlike the WAC 8 that bolted, their “earnings” were made in the WAC and any “sharing” they lost by forming the MWC with the hope that they, in the near future, would be able to recoup the losses. BTW, did they recoup their losses?

If you had a disgruntled employee who publically says ” I want out” would you continue to keep him/she even if the employee had the potential to bring in additional income (and the emphasis in on potentional)? I would let that person go for cause.

  182. Maverick October 19, 2008 3:18 pm

ESPN announcers and ALL fans during that 4th and 1 moment on the initial drive….
    “Are they Nuts?”

Get the easy three points. First score on the board against a ranked team.

Guess were nuts. Oops. not us, I meant the play caller.

  183. chawan_cut October 19, 2008 3:20 pm

yeah, what about mouton going to miami. shouldn’t he check with the new compliance girl if that’s ok? don’t want any sanctions. could someone check on that?

  184. Mike October 19, 2008 3:27 pm

    Chawan,

Good point. Didn’t OJ Mayo get in trouble with the NCAA for going to a Nuggets game on Melo’s dime?

  185. chawan_cut October 19, 2008 3:52 pm

    Mike,
yes, i recall that. can you or stephen remind the uh folks about that incident? we don’t need any more eyes on us.
we’re not big enough like USC to get away with both that incident and all the stuff Mr. Reggie Bush did with that free house to his family.

  191. chawan_cut October 19, 2008 4:32 pm

i also really don’t think Boise has a shot to get into any other conference. they have nothing else besides football.
    what else can they offer?
their basketball team gets lucky once in awhile (i still can’t believe Coby Karl made it into the NBA, talk about nepotism).
they have a wrestling and gymnastics team. woo!
let them think they have a chance to move. let them also think they have a shot at the bcs. i see them getting surprised by one of the wac teams that can actually score and not turn turn the ball over. if they do make it to the bcs, they don’t have the team this year to compete in my opinion. we gave them 5 interceptions. if they had a good offense, the score would’ve been much more ugly. sure they missed 2 FGs, but thats only 6 points. just my opinion. i didn’t want to tell that to the boise fans on friday, they were all nice, and i didn’t want to sound like a bitter loser, heh.

    Hawaiianbod,

Mahalo for the props #28; Wildcats had over 530 yds in offense but only scored 17 points. i guess turning the ball over 4 times inside the 10 yard line doesn’t help.

Defense did their job, but the team needs to focus on the tasks at hand, with Northern Arizona coming up quickly. Looks to be a showdown in Flagstaff next weekend.

    mahalo again,

  195. A-House October 19, 2008 5:02 pm

IMHO, if Boise St wants to go, get rid of it. You don’t want a cancer around even if they may qualify for a BCS bowl. Is TCU or Utah playing a tougher schedule than Boise St?

BTW, can the other Presidents really vote to kick them out? What will Benson say? I think they should also let Benson go and select a younger, upcoming assist commissioner from another conference, specifically from a BCS conference, to start “networking” for future progress. Will this give the WAC more prestige? Also, one who can really be objective when it comes to scheduling games for all sports and willing to punish officials who are making so many bad calls or non-calls. Otherwise, they may think that they can act like a god and not worry about any consequence(s). Any one know when, if ever, has the WAC donged a referee or an officiating team?

I for one would like to see a Boise schedule of playing east of the Mississippi River on Saturday and then flying to Hawaii to play a Friday night game the next week. Let’s see how well they handle the lack of prep time and the “jet lag”. If they do well, my hats off to them!!

You know, it is amazing that the 8 teams who left the WAC, was able to keep such a secret from Benson and the WAC with so many contacts and agrements they had to secure “prior” to leaving. Yes, I know that they had a secret meeting at some airport to finalize the move. How come no one gave Benson a rumor(s) about such a staggering decision? Does he not have “friends” out there?

  196. Stretch October 19, 2008 5:06 pm

I was checking the season scoring stats after having a feeling that the offense doesn’t seem to “finish” games. This is what I found.

    1st Q 37 pts
    2nd Q 41 pts 78 pts total for 1st Half
    3rd Q 35 pts
    4th Q 17 pts 52 pts total for 2nd Half
    OT 3 pts

Looks pretty even but if you look at the last 4 games against WAC opponents, SJSU,Fresno,LaTech,Boise St

    1st Q 23 pts
    2nd Q 41 pts 64 pts for 1st half
    3rd Q 13 pts
    4th Q 7 pts 20 pts for 2nd half
    OT 3 pts

To score only 1 TD & 0 FG in the 4th Q of WAC games is scary. If you include the Oregon State game where we scored a touchdown on the opening drive then got shutout the rest of the way, it doesn’t look good. The only game where we stepped up in the second half was Weber State.

Are the defenses adjusting better than we are??

Are the defenses able to adjust to our “new” system??

  197. brew808 October 19, 2008 5:07 pm

    I’m betting that Benson’s short list of friends doesn’t include A-House! 😀 😯 😆

  198. brew808 October 19, 2008 5:10 pm

IMHO – yes, and yes. And vs. Weber State – attrition and team depth played a significant role. 🙄

  199. lab rat October 19, 2008 5:13 pm

I like Benson. I think he is a pretty good jazz guitarist.

  200. Stretch October 19, 2008 5:14 pm

To add to the post above, we have scored a total of 3 TD’s and 1 FG in the 4th Q of all 7 games this season, not including the OT FG to win against Fresno.

  201. brew808 October 19, 2008 5:19 pm

Effective adjustments are being made at half time by one of the teams….

Wasn’t Benson a TV character or TV show? The WAC version seems to be more of a cartoon character, or an evil prince/sorcerer in a Disney story…. IMHO 😀 😯 😆

  202. lab rat October 19, 2008 5:22 pm

    Jason,

pretty please, could you print #171, 180 and 182 and take it to the Na Koa luncheon and put the question to Coach Mack the way Postmanke put it in 171? there’s got to be something to the idea that our players’ athleticism is being matched by the other sides’ play calling. and just maybe Inoke should be wearing shaded face mask to hide his eyez. his whole being seems to be telegraphing where the ball is gonna go.

  214. koakane™ October 19, 2008 6:46 pm

imho after reading Ahouse take on potato state I must agree. if they want out badly let them go and be a burden to the MWC and have Benson steep down as WAC commissioner. after the famous split I have not seen any significant improvement in the league, yes a tv espn package here and there but its because the WAC has been the more attractive than the MWC in fball. let the ponies go, what do they have to offer after the fball season is over a big nothing you never hear of them again. they suck in all other sports.

no forget to look forward to this saturday’s game against Nevada. plan to come out enjoy the tgate and den make noise in support of our boys.

    Howzit erryboddy!

Dis iz da real d1島 posting again from da hale.
Got in a few hours ago and unpacked and caught up on today’s posts.
Starting to fade already from da football weekend but read some interesting stuff posted today.
    – BS-You is not going anywhere even IF they make it to another BCS game. Like others have said, their overall athletics program doesn’t offer much and their stadium doesn’t have a very “big” feel to it. Undoubtedly, another BCS payday would go a long way with Idaho’s cost of living but Bronco Stadium was built up over the years from a JC field and it has a long way to go to be considered as anything you’d tout to a prospective conference that you’re trying to impress.
    – IMHO maybe OC Lee is admitting that the blocking may have been better on the edge going to the left at the end of the first seried; can’t have a whiff out there on an option leaving your QB trying to option two defenders.
    – Not sure that a tinted face shield is even allowable this season but nonetheless, the QB1 is doing much more than leading Safeties to the pass than just his eyes.
    – Lack of presnap motion sounds like a good question to pose at Na Koa tom’w. It would be an interesting answer to hear. The Former Coach has said that they stopped doing it because they could tell what the defense was doing without motion.

  217. d1島: October 19, 2008 7:02 pm

btw, my vote for quote of the day goes to postmanke:

kden tsaiko this is kinda early but we have been planning for the next two away games which is two week away. I get information out to everyone’s in a timely manner. so remember read and recheck the blog for happenings.

Remember we want to spread the tagates around and be fair to all. Plus it will be nice to see how the east and windward side stands up the ceded lands. So stay turned for more updated information.

  220. Dennis Halloran October 19, 2008 7:21 pm

The Sacramento Market is the largest TV market not touched by Pac-10 or WAC, UC Davis is the key to any conference switches. Lets get La Tech to say bye and fill in with UC Davis. That would keep would keep the Rhapsody in Blue happy!
Inoke should get one more try but then you have to plan for future years and he seems to be a .500 team type QB in his play that I have seen.

  221. d1島: October 19, 2008 7:21 pm

And finally, since it’s “Rambling Sunday”, schmall kine off-topic…

Some observations of people from this past weekend:

People in many places on the mainland have a different perspective of college sports. When we got into Boise you know that entire city is supporting their football team. I got a taste of it a few years ago when I stayed overnight there on the day after a game day but this past Friday was amazing!
It started with the entire staff at Denny’s wearing orange BS-You shirts and continued with multitudes of vehicles with window flags. The front desk staff at the Doubletree wear Boise jerseys; our bartender, Dennis had one, too. And he’s not even from Boise!
You just really get the feeling that the whole town is backing their team and it’s not just the 31,242 (I subtracted what I guess was about a thousand Hawaii fans) who were in the stadium.
But then as much as they ardently support their team, they seemed to go out of their way to present a hospitable face to the visiting fans (das us, in case you getting trouble staying awake now) as we walked thru their tailgates into the stadium. With the exception of a few really young kids who were having some fun with us (and to whom I suggested they had learned their manners in Fresno) all I heard was basically, “Welcome to town. Good luck in the game.” That’s it.
    (more in the next comment)

Tinted face mask won’t help the “stare-down” that is going on! IMHO

There may be a pass progression that can be described to the ESPN folks, but it doesn’t look like it’s executed in game conditions….

I can tell run/pass by the OL set. How about you?

Does “under center” include having your OL bull-rushed right on top of the QB?

    😳 Oops – I wasn’t trying to keep my trap shut! Sorry…. 😳 😀

  225. brew808 October 19, 2008 7:34 pm

    Freudian slip? wasn’t should be was! 😳 🙄 😳

  226. d1島: October 19, 2008 7:40 pm

Inside the stadium all you see are blue or orange shirts. I have noticed in the past that they are able to even coordinate the colors by sections. Friday night, I’m not sure if there was an attempt to do something similar by stadium level (orange on the bottom, blue on top) but whatever it was, it was way more impressive than people wearing black, white, and different shades of green UH stuff interspersed with Tapout, BJ Penn-inspired and Ainokea t-shirts.
Yes, the stadium is dry. Maybe that helps in people being coherent enough to make noise when their team is on Defense and not when they have the ball. It probably makes the “Boise” and “State” cheers easier to start spontaneously. I’m sure it also prevented them from “falling” for the UH cheerleaders’ plans to “trick them” into doing a Wave that they started.
Why is it that they can sell out their stadium with raucous fans that seem to have a good time by enjoying adult beverages outside pre-game and can continue that during the game without it once the game starts? I’m just askin’….
btw, did I mention that I didn’t see any fights, taunts, or swearing at UH fans during the game? No beer thrown at us; no getting jostled in the restroom; no “stink-eye” walking up the aisle to get to the concession either…

  227. d1島: October 19, 2008 7:48 pm

And maybe it’s because they won, but “Who knows?”
After the game we walked back to the Doubletree about 7 blocks and again didn’t get cussed at, threatened or bumped. The only comments were “Good game Hawaii.”
In fact, before we even left the stadium property a guy came up to our group (IDK if he had any official capacity, or not) and sincerely asked if we had any problems from Boise fans and if we felt like we’d been treated poorly.

  228. koakane™ October 19, 2008 7:50 pm

welcome back d1 how is #2 son and the overall team doing? must have been exhausting catching two game with much distance between them. but main thing had a good time.

hey around a thousand fans, man that a lot of 808 residents going to boise and supporting it’s native sons. noticed from stretch pics peeps from HI like youself had long sleeve under shirts while boise fans had just orange t shirts on.

interesting you mentions the make up of boise. while waiting for the game to begin pride talked about the economy and make up of that village. seems they have a well planned economic infrastructure that can sustain a living community in addition to supporting a college atmosphere.

  229. d1島: October 19, 2008 7:50 pm

  232. FloridaTed October 19, 2008 7:54 pm

Boise has somewhat delusions of grandeur, which is typical of being the big fish in a small pond for awhile. The MWC is having a great year, but where were they the last few years? Nothing special. This year the UCLA win has lost a lot of its luster and BYU has clearly been exposed by TCU. Utah will lose at least one game and I ask myself, what would Boise add to the MWC they don’t already have? Nothing, if they expand, I think they will look to the Conference USA.

Boise will not have undefeated seasons in the MWC, they would be hunted every single game, just to show up the newcomers.

Like I’ve said a few times before, the best way to keep Boise in line is to have at least 4 or 5 teams raise their game consistently to their level. We will become one of those programs in a couple of years.

  233. lab rat October 19, 2008 7:57 pm

    Koakane,

Huge game this week with NWC championship implications as the Wildcats are hosting Willamette in McMinnville. Both undefeated and have already beaten defending champion Whitworth (sorry djmitcho, just infomin’ not raggin’)

  235. d1島: October 19, 2008 8:00 pm

    Garret,

UH at UNLV last year comes to mind.

Common denominators I see: beer and lots of Hawaii fans who thought they “owned” Sam Boyd Stadium.

  236. Garret October 19, 2008 8:01 pm

Funny story I heard about what happened in Austin last night. Some Texas fans and Missouri fans were ragging on each other before the game, standard type of trash talking. Then when the game started the Missouri fans got really quiet and the Texas fans got very loud, with chants of “over-rated”, etc.

Then, when the score got really bad (around the time it was 28-0), the Texas fans actually felt sorry for the Missouri fans who spent all that money to come to Austin, so they actually stopped making fun of the Missouri fans. In fact, some Texas fans actually bought the Missouri fans beer since they said they needed it and they gave them their tickets to the Texas Alumni Association (free food/beverages) to give them a place to go to drink, eat some free food, and watch the game on TV if they didn’t want to stay at the Stadium. Many of them were leaving the game anyway, so this gave them a place to go.

If Missouri had been a rival like Texas A&M or Oklahoma, the Texas fans would have been different…they never would have felt sorry for fans of a rival team!

  237. Committed Road Warrior October 19, 2008 8:05 pm

    d1,

Glad to hear you’re back on the rock. I also echo the observations you’ve written about the Boise game. The type of reception we (as opposing fans) received in Boise was very good, and I would have no qualms going back in 2 years when we play them on the Blue again.

On a small kine tangent: Did you happen to be wearing a purple shirt and/or a red hat on your flight home? I thought I saw someone that looked like you, but didn’t know for sure if it was you. Friday was SOOOO long ago!!! I was sitting on some high-table in the middle of the PDX D-concourse perusing the blog and eating lunch and only glanced a look, so judgment might have been off just a little bit.

  238. d1島: October 19, 2008 8:09 pm

Like I’ve said a few times before, the best way to keep Boise in line is to have at least 4 or 5 teams raise their game consistently to their level. We will become one of those programs in a couple of years.

    FloridaTed,

Which 4 or 5 teams in the WAC are you hoping to reach BSU’s level? Idaho and Utah State could actually lose their D-IA status soon, and that would basically make the WAC not a viable conference anymore. Not too long ago SJSU was talking about dropping out of D-IA and SJSU has major budget problems…if Tomey ever retired that program could end. Louisiana Tech isn’t going to reach BSU’s level.

I see UH and Fresno State as near BSU’s level, but BSU has clearly been better than both for the last 5+years. Nevada and SJSU would be the other big hopes for the WAC, but Nevada is pretty far away and SJSU has some problems that Coach Tomey is masking now (poor student/faculty support, budget crunch that will get worse soon, etc.).

If the WAC had 4 or 5 teams at BSU’s level, the WAC would be close to a BCS conference. However, just saying that it should happen doesn’t mean that it could actually happen.

BSU actually might have a way into the MWC in 3 or so years. I honestly think that SDSU might have to drop from D-IA football sometime in the future with the way their situation is. The students are furious at the forced fees being added to subsidize the losses of the Athletic Department. The faculty are furious because all Athletic Department shortfalls are being covered by a fund that would normally be used to fund their research and lab needs. *Nobody* seems to be going to SDSU games, and the situation is getting much, much worse.

If SDSU leave the MWC, which single team might be positioned to join? UH has the travel burden, Fresno State was rejected last time, and BSU could have built up quite a following on ESPN over the years. Swapping out SDSU for BSU would make the MWC much, much stronger.

For those who say that all BSU has to offer is football and men’s basketball…in D-IA sports, that is basically all that is important from a financial perspective! Football and men’s basketball pay the bills for everything else and pretty much all other sports (except for rare cases like UH volleyball) lose money.

No matter what the Chargers plan to do, the city of San Diego has been clear about how they plan to tear down Qualcomm Stadium and sell off its prime real estate to help get it out of debt. The city loses money every year that Qualcomm Stadium exists and they have refused all Chargers requests to extend the contract for playing at Qualcomm Stadium.

After Qualcomm Stadium is gone in 3-5 years, where is SDSU going to play football? The city is bankrupt, the California state Universities have huge budget cuts for this year and in every planned year in the future, and people don’t bother going to games now. How is SDSU going to remain a D-IA program?

Bess lost the kickoff return job to Ted Ginn, which is not a huge surprise. At least he got his first TD reception today–congratulations to Bess!

In case you forgot, the opening kickoff offered a reminder not only that Ted Ginn Jr. is still a Miami Dolphin, but that he is still Ted Ginn Jr.

That means equal parts exasperating (a bobble) and electrifying (a 31-yard return).

The Dolphins were smart to return Ginn to his rightful place: back deep. Tony Sparano’s contention that the shiftier Davone Bess had a better shot to make the first guy miss made sense on punt returns. Ginn is the superior option on kickoff returns, which allow him to recover from a mistake and build to top speed before encountering a tackler.

“It was a relief,” Ginn said. “I can’t lie. I had fun and enjoyed it. Using me like that, you get more out of me. I’m active and already lathered to go on the offensive side.”

Ginn also noted that “You’re going to see squib kicks and pooches a lot with me back there.”

Kevin Craft is getting some praise from his head coach now.

If nothing else, UCLA quarterback Kevin Craft has survival skills.

On the verge of being yanked, he drove the Bruins 88 yards for a field goal in the last two minutes of the first half against Stanford on Saturday. On the precipice of defeat, he took them 87 yards for a game-winning touchdown in the last two minutes of the game.

“I think Kevin is doing great things,” Coach Rick Neuheisel said. “You factor in his experience and an offense that is completely foreign to him. We’re asking him to do an awful lot. He doesn’t go in the tank when things go wrong. You have to admire that.”

Garrett fball carries all their sports. their basketball ball program is so so and it facilities not very huge. BS may need to come up with additional women sports to round out schedules which may bring up gender equity issues and some financial responsibilities. you maybe right about 3 year down the road but if MWC is looking to have someone take over for SDSU they should be monitoring a calif team and FSU maybe looking good.

well…looks to be BSU is heading to another BCS if all goes well this season. Sure must be nice to have such a quality team year in and year out. I’m sure Hawaii will get to BSU’s level one day in the future and contend once every 2-3 years for a top 20 ranking in the polls.

It took JJ 9 years to get us to a level where we can be respected in our conference and nation. Lets hope and pray and hope again that the momentum isnt thrown out with the bathwater. Like SDSU budget cuts will hit our program and if the program goes downhill it may just add more excuses to cut more money year after year.

To the leaders of our program now, you face a golden past that JJ left us, there is a lot to step up to but more so a lot to continue and make BIGGER in the future . 253. Garret October 19, 2008 8:54 pm

    koakane,

I agree that BSU isn’t great at a lot of other sports. I just don’t think that is that important to a conference. However, you do bring up a good point about how they might have to add a women’s sport or two…but that is easily done given money and they apparently have money to spend. By investing their BCS money in luxury boxes, they will have extra money every year to spend on anything else they need.

I have been hoping for a couple of years that when SDSU went down that UH might be able to be in a great negotiating position with the MWC…worst-case, that would have made the WAC treat UH better to keep UH in the WAC. Unfortunately, the facilities at UH went down under HF, plus the travel costs went crazy, so I figure UH is not going to be the 1st (BSU), 2nd (Fresno), or 3rd (some C-USA team) of the MWC.

This situation with SDSU is *not* a surprise and it was pretty clear what was happening 2 years ago. SDSU has been getting more and more desperate to keep their athletic department afloat (raiding the President’s fund, forcing 2 fee increases for the students even after the students voted down the first increase, Chargers’ situation was set 2 years ago, etc.). I didn’t discuss SDSU’s situation here much (every so often I’d post something) because it wasn’t that relevant to UH…but now that ST put a note about how BSU wants to go to the MWC, it *is* relevant that the MWC might lose a team in 3-5 years.

  254. Garret October 19, 2008 8:56 pm

The OL needs to be together to be effective, so it is good to hear they are tight and behind Inoke.

i think the offense needs to keep it simple. more defined routes. we are either reading the coverage wrong or not running precise routes

I thought that was what JJ had been doing the past couple of years and the talk was that UH under Ron Lee would go back to the original run-and-shoot with the reading the coverage and options back.

One thing that I have been thinking of for awhile–I agree with something that dcwarrior pointed out over a month ago on SportsHawaii. One big problem UH has this year is that the QBs didn’t have much playing time in the offense (aside from Tyler, but he’s a whole other topic for discussion). However, instead of getting reps in the base offense, UH spent a *lot* of time (wasn’t it more than a week in the spring?) with the QBs under center. Then, when the JC QBs came in the summer, they talked about how they had to learn to take snaps under center and they were working on that with Inoke and the other QBs. And didn’t they work on the QB under center in Fall camp also?

So, a big problem to start the season was that the QBs and WRs weren’t in sync in the base offense, but UH wasn’t practicing the base offense and was instead trying to learn to work under center for a significant portion of practice. And I can’t remember UH using the QB under center except for short-yardage situations that UH was already using the QB under center with JJ. The 4th down option play vs. BSU was a play that Colt ran very effectively in the past, but I think Colt had audibles if the defense was stacked like it was.

I’m guessing that if the coaches knew that they wouldn’t be using the QB under center much this season (remember all of the discussion we had about that and how people here and even Mac talked about how that would help the offense deal with the pass rush?), they would have used that valuable practice time to work on the base offense. But something happened to change the plans and keep the QBs in the shotgun…

Anyway, this is all in the past and nothing can be done about it now. I support the coaches and they have done a good job modifying the offense for add elements for Inoke’s mobility (kind of like the Shawn Withy-Allen days). I just had to say this once and get it off my chest, and now I’ll just be focused on Nevada. Beat Nevada and the road to the Hawaii Bowl is pretty clear!

  266. Garret October 19, 2008 9:12 pm

    brew808,

That could be another worst-case scenario–the MWC takes Fresno State and leaves an unhappy BSU behind. There are no good options for the WAC to replace Fresno State and the conference strength would go WAY down in a lot of sports with Fresno State not there!

For those talking about UC-Davis going to D-IA, remember that it takes a *lot* of money to move up divisions. That includes building a football stadium and hiring a lot of coaches and building facilities before any money comes in. The biggest problem with that is that the UC schools are getting a big budget cut this year and are going to be squeezed further in future years. So, where is there money coming from?

The biggest positive for UC-Davis is that UH has someone with very good connections there, as Chancellor Hinshaw was there until she came to UH.

    bew808,

I saw that line posted on SportsHawaii and was surprised because the game is at Aloha Stadium and that is normally worth 3-4 points to the line…which means that the oddsmakers think that UH is a 7-8 point underdog on a neutral field.

The line grew for the BSU game which means that the public was betting on BSU and giving the points…so, that means that the bettors lost and the casinos won (again).

I’ve never bet against UH, since I’ve never wanted to be happy when UH lost.

garrett this may sound out of the box and far fetched but bring back the idea of super conference between MWC and WAC. keep divisions seperate then play a seven game schedule within each division then suppliment 3 cross rival games and 3 game out side conference. Don’t quite know how the eventual champion would be named but I am sure some one can come up with a plan.

if worst come to worst Hawaii just stay in WAC and wait it out till can get an PAC 10 invite then all is good.

Re: Under center. My two theories why we aren’t going under center much this year:

    (1) They wanted to implement it, but it wasn’t working out in terms of timing, mechanics, making the reads, etc. Better to go with something that sorta works (that is, the shotgun) than to go with something that isn’t working out well at all.
    (2) Inoke’s a short guy, he’s going to need to line up in shotgun in order to see the field and better view the passing lanes. Maybe if it were Rausch or Alexander, then we’d be seeing more under center plays.

  293. Garret October 19, 2008 9:42 pm

final comment on the under center stuff.

perhaps, that the qb’s did not have enough time as it was. therefore, going shotgun gave them a nano second longer.

but, its a catch 22 here. whether its a 3 or 5 step drop, the wr’s need to be open by the time the qb is set up. as it is we are not finding much open out there, so no matter the formation. if they aren’t open then the qb will be hurried or sacked. one can only block for so long.

going back to jj’s first year. we may have had only a dozen plays in our playbook due to its newness. but they worked because it was also new to the rest of the wac. the wac has adjusted to the 4 wide somewhat. more so if we aren’t open or if we are hurried.

just gotta give this new staff time to develop the playbook.

very interesting posts….I enjoy reading them…How bout them Monks

I would like to see how LWJ does with the qb under center

  302. Postmanke October 19, 2008 10:07 pm

    Garret,

I am sure our game plan will be same as always. Our 5 steps routes will turn into big gains if we stay patient. I think we will see more slant routes and yac. Nevada does horrible job of tackling. Their secondary does breakdown quite a bit. It will be interesting to see if they start out with a nickle package on D.

But whatever our game plan we better pay attention to our 2nd down play calling. Our 3rd and longs are killing us!

  304. FloridaTed October 19, 2008 10:47 pm

As I’ve discussed on a previous blog, in about 4-5 years there will be a complete re-alignment of the leagues taking place. I’ve run some Nr’s and a 16 team play-off would generate 5-6 times more money than the total BCS take now.

There will be 8×12 team conferences with championship games. The champions and runners up will be the 16, seated according to BCS rankings. The BCS can still handle the play-offs and all other teams still go to the regular bowls, Nothing would change much except a hell of a lot of exitement amd the almighty money.

The networks would shell out huge bucks and this could become as big as the run to the Super Bowl. All legitimate D1 teams would be in the BCS (96 is about right) and everybody would be happy. Geographic location would play a big part in re-alignment to save travel costs.

  305. FloridaTed October 19, 2008 11:09 pm

    Al, Jason, Garret, postmanke,

That is exactly what drives me bonkers. I just can’t figure out what’s wrong with this offense. They seem to have one or maybe two good drives and then everything sputters for some reason. If I can call every play they’re going to run from my TV, surely so can a defense. We have talent, there’s no doubt, but what is it? Coaching? Did it really take them this long to figure out what works and doesn’t, to waste valuable practice time? Is it the Players that just can’t grasp the system or whatever you want to call it? In the second halves we look like a D2 team.

So who’s fault is it? I really can’t tell, except speculation, but that’s all it is.

JJ’s recruiting and not playing back-ups more is also haunting us now. If coach Mack can drag the team into the Hawaii Bowl, I’ll be happy and hopefully next season we are dangerous again. If we don’t see significant improvement by the offense next year, then I WILL begin to question the offensive coaches prowess.

I’m looking forward to Corey Nielson and Steele Jantz battling it out next year.

For those talking about UC-Davis going to D-IA, remember that it takes a *lot* of money to move up divisions. That includes building a football stadium and hiring a lot of coaches and building facilities before any money comes in.

UC Davis has had a fairly solid plan on preparing to move up but they acknowledge it may take another 5-10 years as far as their football program goes.

    http://athletics.ucdavis.edu/aggiepride/1_1_stadium.html

They’ve already completed the first phase of Aggie Stadium (10,000 seats). The future expansion whenever they decide to make the jump to FBS will bring it to 30,000. In addition to box seats which are all sold out (66 boxes at $20K a pop), they have some naming opportunities available in order to raise funds to cover the next phase.

Davis already has a bunch of top notched facilities for the rest of their sports programs.

    http://ucdavisaggies.cstv.com/facilities/ucda-facilities.html

Since the UC system is planning to make Davis a flagship campus like Berkeley and Los Angeles, there is also talk that they aren’t in a rush since they might be part of a future Pac-10 expansion (to cover the Sacramento media market) which falls in line with the upgrade of their football program. Still, it would be wise for the WAC to place feeders since this would be an awesome GET for the conference. The Cal-State schools like SJSU and Fresno would hate to share a conference with them – instant heated rivalry right away though.

  307. madeinhawaii October 19, 2008 11:16 pm

Our Chancellor is from UC Davis.

  308. Ralph October 19, 2008 11:35 pm

florida ted coach mac isn’t rotating his players liked he hyped in the preseason…view your tapes, check the o and d lines, basically the same peeps…same with the wr…..the primary changes are due to injuries not a matter of rotating because of depth and giving PT…

Good information, it was worth reading. Keep up the good work on your posts, I will keep checking back for more posts like this one. If you want checkout my site as well.

  312. Garret October 20, 2008 5:06 am

    Pomai and Hawaiianbod,

But the point that I should stay away from politics for the free play links was a good one. No matter what the point is about the article, that is a subject that is too sensitive (especially for the next few weeks!) and people will get upset no matter what the article says.

So, I don’t mind being called an idiot for that post because I should have known to stay away from the subject. Stuff like the lasermonks.com is much safer and probably more interesting to most people…

  313. Garret October 20, 2008 5:11 am

    Postmanke,

Good to know that Nevada has tackling problems in the secondary. YAC is critical for UH’s offense and it would be nice to see a consistent 5+ yards for each reception…the offense would move the ball so well then and nobody would question Inoke’s stats.

  314. Garret October 20, 2008 5:15 am

Thank you for the UC-Davis information above, but that actually helps prove the point I was trying to make. If the WAC wants to kick out BSU, or if BSU wants to leave in 3 or so year, then UC-Davis will not be ready to join the WAC then. In fact, I’m guessing that the economic slowdown and the budget problems for the State of California will make that 5-10 year estimate more like 10+ years.

The other issue is that UC-Davis would probably *not* be satisfied with being in the WAC with SJSU and Fresno State. The WAC would just be inviting a school that would be looking for a Pac-10 invitation, as UC-Davis would much rather be in a conference with UCLA and UC-Berkeley.

  315. Garret October 20, 2008 5:21 am

I had a little time to think about Ferd’s column today and actually don’t blame the NCAA for this issue. Ferd mentioned that someone at UH was supposed to check over Rausch’s form and that person obviously missed the mistake. And it is a scary thought that Rausch was ineligible when he played against Florida, so if UH had won they would have had to forfeit…can you imagine how upset UH fans would have been? Mostly they would have blamed the NCAA, but ineligible is ineligible and not the NCAA’s fault.

If UH had played BSU on Saturday like usual, then the NCAA would have actually cleared Rausch in time to make the trip. There are a LOT of times I am critical of the NCAA, but in this case I think they worked about as fast as a large organization can be expected to work.

  316. Garret October 20, 2008 5:24 am

The paper is offering the buyout to full-time employees in all departments except for advertising.

I hope that nobody we know in the sports department at the Advertiser is being targeted with the “voluntary separation program”.

Maybe the WAC needs a new name; say if BSU leaves for whatever’s, maybe the WAC can transition into being called the, “BIG8”???? ahhh!!, forget it, just joking.

  325. Buffoman October 20, 2008 7:39 am

Interestingly, a while back I had indicated that the o-line was going to be a problem spot for the Warriors. The point was made to me by a reliable source, and at the time was questioned by some of the bloggers.

I’ve also learned from some of the folks here and in conversations that the chemistry between some of the new coaches and the players has been somewhat stretched. That may be contributing to some of the issues we continue to see, especially on the o-line.

What may have started out as an observation a while back may be coming a bigger issue if the chemistry, or lack of it is causing the players to not respond as the could or should.

The comment from Florida Ted was that he’ll watch and support this year but if things don’t change he’ll start to become more critical is a good stance. Coaches have to coach and part of that is chemistry. It’s not about paling around and being friends, its about respect going both ways. That’s earned and not a right, by both parties.

That being said, Coach Mac has to be evaluating his staff and players at all times and needs to make decisions based on goals and objectives first and friendships and opportunities (for aspiring coaches) second, or problems and questions will continue to be brought forward.

At this point we all support our coach and team, but there has to be that realization that support is earned by performance.

Koakane ~ Bay View TV-gate has one other thing that we Tsaiko’s always appreciate…SPACE, the final frontier! As the game got into the 4th quarter, more people came in, and so they just added on more tables to join with their friends.

  329. Stretch October 20, 2008 7:53 am

Sorry to keep on the scoring, while driving in this morning I heard Curran talking about it this morning so looked at it again. It’s just reality and is something that needs to change for us to win.

  330. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 20, 2008 7:55 am

    Buffoman- noted!
Coach Mack is definitely engaged on the dee side. We didn’t see the same coaching intensity generally on the oh side during the LaTech game- though Coach Rolo and Inoke were in conference a lot.

For this rebuilding year- I give the coaches and team a chance to get things moving in the best direction and am generally withholding criticism.

DI – Do you still need a copy of the LaTech game?

Anyone else need copies of any of the games – Boise State, LaTech, or Fresno State. Sorry – erased the San Jose State game.

Once again, we’ll be collecting HI-5 containerss at Saturday’s T-Gate for the after-school athletic program at Dole Middle School. Please bring them from home.

Who will be taking reservations for the two away T-Gates? We’ll be at both.

Garret: Sorry, but I disagree with you regarding politics. Just look how many times political decisions have directly impacted what happens at the University and the Department of Education in their athletic programs and how important it is for people to get involved in order to make their voices heard.

Indirectly, how about the high cost of energy and the rising transportation costs whether to drive high school students to meets or whether UH should go back to paying other schools to play here in Hawai`i. Everything is political and it is our job as citizens to make sure that decisions are transparent and that we have access to information.

Off the soap box and on to Na Koa.

go check it out….its walk up service during lunch and table service at dinner. if you like fresh fish prepared by a 5 star chef in a casual setting, then uncle’s is the place.

moderately priced with very large portions. my favorite is the “combo #2” a fish and chips that has fresh catch, giant calamari, shrimps. served over a bed of thick fries and cole slaw. served with malt vinegar, tartar sauce, and cocktail sauce.

a good friend of mine, the former chef at yacht harbor tower, michelle’s, etc runs the place. its a can’t miss dining at pier 38.

    okay, commercial over.
