Summer fun

Sometimes the NCAA gets it right.
Schools are allowed to startย  athletic scholarships at the start of Summer Session I, giving recruits a jump-start on their studies. Not only do prospects have a chance to earn several college credits, they also can participate in the summer conditioning programs as early as late May. (Hey, with global warming, is sure feels like it’s summer now, anyway.)
And they also are allowed to work.

* * *

Slotback Kealoha Pilares’ family has helped safety Spencer Smith adjust to the Hawaiโ€˜i the past couple of years. Smith’s family is reciprocating. Pilares and Smith will attend Summer Session I, then train in Smith’s hometown in Georgia.

* * *

Did I mention that as part of his Hawaiian class last week, Smith performed a hula?

* * *

Did I mention that wideout Jett Jasper and offensive linemen Levi Legay and Kahai Choy are on the preliminary 105-player training camp roster? Is that LizKauai cheering?

* * *

The memorial service for Pomai’s wife is Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Palama Settlement.

Somebody took a nap during the kindergarten lesson on “staying within the lines.”

Sawgrass Stadium Course, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. (5:30 am).

Local-boy (kaneohe), Dean Wilson will kick-off the TPC Sawgrass Tournament on the front-nine at 7:10 am, EST tomorrow. Wilson is playing with Rocco Mediate and Ryan Moore…..yikes, that is 1:10 am, HST, for those surfing the net, try Live@TIMES.

Lefty and Tim Tebow were seen together yesterday.
Tebow, who went to nearby Nease High School, joined Mickelson at Timuquana Country Club, a private course in Jacksonville where Bob Duval was the former head pro and where son David Duval grew up playing as a kid.

MORE JAGS (8:14 a.m.): Yesterday, Jacksonville Jaguars Rasheen Mathis and Scott Starks were out following Tiger Woods. Today, Jags running back Maurice Jones-Drew and defensive tackle Derek Landry are out following Woods. They’re not quite the golf fanatics that Mathis is, but both started playing a couple of years ago and jumped at the chances to see Woods play in person for the first time. “It’s just amazing to see him in person,” Jones-Drew said. “He’s unbelievable.”

Tiger, Whatley and Furyk on the back-nine at 7am.
Woods and Whatley are early-birds and worked the front-nine on MONDAY.
Their caddies all took the traditional caddie-shot at the infamous island on the 17th…all three missed, including Steve Williams who aint a bad golfer.
I was told the 17th was the most played last year–45,000 rounds–150,000 balls, yearly, are taken out-of the waters surrounding the island.
Whatley is originally from the Fresno area and Tiger is from the LA scrubs.
Never was a Garcia fan but Sergio is truly a sincere personality and plays with so much passion.
He is the reigning TPC champ.

  18. warriorfanny2 May 6, 2009 7:14 am

watched the Tony Tuioti interview w ST and the princess this am and was impressed with Tony’s organizational skills and loyalty to program.
Gotta thank MAC for givin him a shot and hopefully TT can someday go into the homes of prospective warrior-recruits as a full-standing UH coach….he has a good sense of what Hawaii has to offer and can counter the negative-stuff that poachers feed our recruits.
His personal resume is livin proof of his beliefs and that is the turnin point in my mind, when recruits attempt to separate jive from sincerity….a top recruiter once told me, that he could change his recruitin pitch pro or con on any program at a drop of a dime….i dont get that feeling with Tony T, he is sincere.

  19. al โ„ข May 6, 2009 7:19 am

if not, who still needs to qualify?

Training periods are usually broken-down into 8 week-cycles and there are two over the year, JAN-MAR and MAY-JULY. They are supervised by a designated trainer, in our case, Uncle Mel.
These cycles usually consist of a prescribed dose of plyometrics, weights, agility drills, techniques, running and other formats specifically prescribed by coaches n trainer.

is it a good idea for pilares and smith to be training in GA? i mean, i would think pilares and smith are both leaders of the O skills and secondary respectively. shouldnt they be out there coordinating the unsupervised workouts? they better not be getting…nevermind, ill refrain from my next comment.

Re: A Navy sponsored event you suggested for UH vs Navy week.

I Got a reply back from the DOD Navy Butterbar, (OICICOST) Officer in Charge Of Such Things. I can’t wait to see SailorBlue’s reaction to this!

    Dear Kekoa,

I received your message inquiring about a Navy Week in Hawaii. There is no Navy Week scheduled for Hawaii in 2009. Our last Navy week of the season is November 2-8 in New Orleans. It is unlikely that NAVCO would organize a Navy Week in Hawaii in the future because it is a Fleet Concentration Area. The focus of NAVCO is to present the Navy to areas of the U.S. that do not have a large Navy presence.

    Respectfully,

    LT Anthony Allard
    Navy Office of Community Outreach
    Aviation Support
    Phone 901-874-5803
    Fax 901-874-5813

*So this must mean we will have to call on you to fly-over the stadium with your Space ship during the National Anthem. It’s that, or we move the game to Kahoolawe where there is no longer a “large Navy presence.”

  31. Kekoa May 6, 2009 7:58 am

Hi Big C…did you get to watch that video??? I know homey is/was probably thinking about you the whole time he watched it….LMAO

  35. warriorfanny2 May 6, 2009 8:12 am

lgw, without getting into the quality of our summer cycle, if i were to select 2 warriors to train on the continent during the summer and feel good about it–it would be Smith and Kealoha.
This is ground-hog year for Smith and Pilares is a disciplined athlete with an accomplished cross-training record. I wouldnt be surprised if these two were seen pulling semi’s in the Georgian backroads or plowing cotton fields fully-harnessed….most times in football, the character of the player matches his discipline and training regime….it certainly will with these two warriors.

  38. letsgowarriors May 6, 2009 8:17 am

nah i know, i always see them hanging out together, i was just gonna make a funny mahu joke about it.

anyway, my problem is not if they will be training while in GA, i know these boys are focused and work hard. i was just hoping these guys would be leading their teammates during the offseason. Smith has been in the system the longest and we have a very inexperienced secondary. it would be important for him to be there guiding and leading the rest of the boys in the secondary. as far as the skills O, salas and alexander can lead but it seems like pilares has a knack for his hard work ethic rubbing off on others.

who knows, i could be totally wrong.

Maybe ST can take pics of our OLM running at high noon. LOL.

Al Noga used to run beaches…no surprise there.

Take a trip down the road to Boulder….they run, run, run, run….to barf….than lift, plyoos, more plyoos, eat and 7-7 at 4:30.

  44. letsgowarriors May 6, 2009 8:40 am

i wasnt talking about OLM, i was talking about kealoha leading the skills O. of course u can go and work hard on your own, but it would still be good to be at the 7ons. last year, inoke funaki would run up koko head in the morning then get to school to tutor the JC qbs and run the 7ons workouts. then lift at night.

ray seems to be the leader of the OLM, hes working out twice a day. but the guys working out with him were raphael ieru, kahai choy, otineru and a couple others. what happened to the rest of the starters?

  45. cheepono May 6, 2009 8:43 am

KK…I would think I am more like Doc….lovable, yet intelligent…MWAHAHHAAHAHHA

  47. warriorfanny2 May 6, 2009 8:52 am

LGW, isnt ontineru in a soft cast?
Our skill guyz for the most part train hard….there are blatant exceptions of course….i believe u know who they r.
In Jacksonville– Urban has them training like animals….juz like boulder….run, run, run, run, run….

  48. Geezy May 6, 2009 8:56 am

its why we have coaches here…good luck to kealoha and spencer…we need more players to consider serious training…i think them going will refresh them mentally and leave them with a clear focus…yes, they are leaders, and this is what leaders do…..they’ll be back for camp and ready to lead…..until the Warriors pull a Boise St. and have every single player stay back for unsupervised work-outs…i think its cool for them to try something different…their team mates should be inspired by this

  49. letsgowarriors May 6, 2009 8:57 am

yeah the otineru blip was from the 1st training cycle, jan – mar. in any case, something needs to be done. tsai get down to UH now! w/ action pics…lol. if theyre smiling for your camera theyre not training hard enough.

To bad that the replay of Coach Tuioti’s interview was “stop-n-go” making it very difficult to follow what was being said.

It was funny to see ST making a “passing motion” every time topic revoled around “future” recruits. I will assume he was thinking of Manley of Leileihua HS.

  55. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2009 9:18 am

    vb:
Charlie Wade, Mike Sealey, Tino Reyes, Scott Wong, Mark Presho … they’re all atop the list.

Pilares knows. He’s ready to sweat this summer.

  57. Garret May 6, 2009 9:19 am

Pilares and Smith choosing to train in Georgia over the summer is interesting–I’m sure that they will work out hard and that heat and humidity will really tax their bodies! It is great that they have formed such a close bond and that Smith will get to spend some extra time at home and Pilares will get to experience a whole different environment.

  58. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2009 9:19 am

We forgot to mention it, but Tuioti has two master’s degrees.

  59. Garret May 6, 2009 9:19 am

Congratulations to Jett Jasper, Levi Legay and Kahai Choy!

  60. Garret May 6, 2009 9:22 am

Pretty amazing that UC-Irvine currently has the #1 teams in baseball and volleyball. It is even more amazing when you consider that Irvine dropped baseball for 10 years (1992-2002).

A few weeks ago, the Anteaters vaulted to the top of the Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball polls, the first time the once-dead program was ranked No. 1 in Division I.Not that the players were overly impressed.

Irvine, the 2007 national champion, lost to USC in a semifinal of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament last week, but the NCAA selection committee awarded the Anteaters an at-large berth and top seeding in the Final Four.

The Anteaters baseball program has enjoyed a steady climb to similar stature, a remarkable journey considering the program was dropped in 1992 because of a statewide budget crunch and is on its third coach since its rebirth.

“It’s been a trickle-down right from the beginning,” Coach Mike Gillespie said, explaining the success.

It started when former athletic director Dan Guerrero made it a priority to restart the program. Irvine students passed a referendum that led to its comeback for the 2002 season.

  61. Garret May 6, 2009 9:24 am

    ST,

I’ve heard Tuioti speak on the WB show and at a Na Koa lunch and I have no doubt that he is very intelligent, knows his football, and loves the Warrior program. He was a perfect hire by Mac, not even counting the fact that Tuioti’s ties to Vegas helps UH’s recruiting of players there.

  62. Garret May 6, 2009 9:27 am

It looks like Dish subscribers in Hawaii like Liz just got a LOT of new HD channels…they went active less than an hour ago.

  63. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2009 9:27 am

    Garret:
They really know how to take care of their own.
They’re building a house on campus for John Speraw, probably the most sought VB coach in the nation.
And, of course, they’re in the O.C. โ€” a hotbed for volleyball and baseball. Then again, Hawaiโ€˜i should be a hotbed, too. I mean, we’ve had two Little League champs the past decade.

  64. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2009 9:28 am

Best of all, Dish gets “Friday Night Lights” in the fall.

  65. Garret May 6, 2009 9:37 am

    ST,

I’ve been on the Irvine campus a lot because one of Lori’s best friends went to graduate school (biotech) in Irvine. Nice campus, big Hawaii club, good location in Orange County…but I never would have thought of them as a volleyball and baseball powerhouse!

  66. warriorfanny2 May 6, 2009 9:40 am

Im not as confident about Tiger’s chances in the TPC Sawgrass as much as other pundits who place him in the top 10.

Mine that Bird had better odds in the derby.

There hasnt been a repeat champion since Davis Love III, ’92 n ’03 and of course golden-boy did it 3Xs in ’74, ’76 and ’78…but that was before Dye did a face-lift on Sawgrass and expanded the course by 400 plus yards.

    Since taking Sawgrass in 2001, Tiger has finished 14, 11, 16, 53, 22 and 37. He DNP in 2008.

More importantly, Tiger is still on the mend and this weeks T will mark the first time in 1 1/2 years that he has played in back-to-back tournaments.

Tiger has been inconsistent with his Tee shots and ballstriking and has had good moments w driving at Doral and putting at Bayhill but has not put the total package together. We saw that at Quail Hollow last week when he opened with a -7 and shot par over the last two rounds.

One analyst suggested Tiger leave his woods in the bag and do what he did at Hoylake in 2005….and use his irons exclusively.

Sawgrass is demanding with its water hazards and long fairway-abutting bunkers.
It is a tricky course and unforgiving for wayward tee shots.
Its stadium course is built on a risk-reward approach and to do well– your fairway accuracy and ballstriking must be at the top of your game.

Tiger, himself, admits, Sawgrass will be a challenge and hinted he will certainly use his driver on the 9th and 11th Par-5 holes….leaving his irons as his first option.

While Woods remains my favorite athlete, Sawgrass is too tall even for a Tiger to roam.
Not with his accuracy off the tee at lows, his driving distance below 295 and his GIR down….i will say his short iron game has gotten better and his putting can be awesome if not deadly inside 6′.
I do believe he will get better by the time August rolls around–its still a matter of his body getting into golfing shape.
Still, Woods will be in thick of the FedEx run starting at the Barclays….who knows about this real-life Clark Kent with a golf-club? Did anyone see last year’s Open at Torrey Pines?
    Tiger won on one leg!

ST ~ Maybe you should write an episode for Friday Nite Lights. It could be the story of a transplanted Hawaiian boy who’s dad was transferred to the local HS as an ROTC instructor.

Local boy struggles to make the transition, is a fleet-footed WR, and his dad the firm disciplinarian. The coach decides to take him on as an assistant coach to help shape up the miscreants. Sparks fly! Season opening episode wins you an Emmy, you retire from HA early!…Fade to golden sunset!

With 2 wins short of clinching a seed in the WAC-T, coach Mike might consider approaching the Fresno road games as if it were a single-elimination series.
We close our WAC schedule this week.

I have raised this before, but it deserves mention again–do not hesitate to bring in the hook before the game gets out of hand. Especially with da ‘dawgs who are hitting at the same level as Hawaii (.271) but have 12 more HRs–when the ‘dawgs hit, its cuz someone is serving batting practice.

Jayson Kramer has been, by far, our most consistent starter and hopefully we can give him some runs to work with tomorrow in the do-or-die-opener between two teams on the verge of Tournament exclusion.

Fresno State (6-10) closes its WAC schedule at SAC (5-9)next week and 2 wins by Hawaii would clinch a WAC-T berth for our bowboyz.
SAC is at NEV this week and we need to follow that series closely too.

More WAC accolades for Wahine Softball

    From hawaiiathletics.com:

Hawai`i and Nevada tied for the most All-WAC selections. Tanisha Milca (first team), Clare Warwick (second team), Kanani Pu`u-Warren (second team), Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu (second team), Amada Tauali`i (first team), and Stephanie Ricketts (WAC Freshman of the Year and second team).

FRESNO, Calif. โ€“ The Western Athletic Conference awarded its 2009 All-WAC honors as selected by the leagueโ€™s head coaches. UH’s Stephanie Ricketts earned Freshman of the Year honors. Tanisha Milca and Amanda Tauali`i were selected first team All-WAC and Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu, Kanani Pu`u-Warren, Stephanie Ricketts, and Clare Warwick earned second team honors.

Ricketts, a righthanded pitcher from San Jose, Calif. (Archbishop Mitty HS), led the conference in wins (13) and innings pitched (118.1) in WAC play. She also tossed a pair of no-hitters against Louisiana Tech and Boise State while starting 15 games with 69 strikeouts. She is the fourth Rainbow Wahine to earn Freshman of the year honors, former UH standouts Stacey Porter and Kaulana Gould and current ‘Bow, Katie Grimes preceeded Ricketts for the prestigious honor.

It was Milca’s fourth All-WAC honor in as many seasons, but first as a first-teamer. Milca, a senior rightfielder from Kailua, O`ahu (Kailua HS) hit .312 in conference action, tallying team-highs in hits (24), doubles (6), RBI (14), and runs scored (tied at 14 with Dara Pagaduan and Kanani Pu`u-Warren).

Tauali`i, a junior first-baseman from Torrance, Calif. (North Torrance HS), was voted to the All-WAC first team after hitting .297 in WAC action. She led UH with six home runs, two triples, and a .662 slugging percentage. She had the second most hits (22), runs (12), and doubles (12) on the squad.

Freshman designated player, Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu, hit .309 (21-for-68) in conference games with seven runs scored, one double and five home runs. The Mililani, O`ahu (Mililani HS) native drove in 12 runs and had a slugging percentage of .544.

Junior centerfielder, Pu`u-Warren, who hails from West Covina, Calif. (Walnut HS), had a strong conference season, leading UH with a .340 average (14-for-24). She put up solid numbers across the board, scoring 14 runs with three doubles, four home runs and a .640 slugging percentage.

Warwick, a senior from Canberra, Australia (Copland HS), collected her third all-WAC honor today. In her outstanding career she was named to the first team in 2007 and has been selected to the second team the last two seasons. Warwick, who was one of just two players to start all 51 games, hit .258 with 10 runs scored, a double, two home runs, and nine RBI. But it was her stellar defensive play at the “hot corner” that really separated her from the rest.

Hawaiโ€˜i and regular season co-champion, Nevada, led the way with six total players on the all-WAC teams, while Louisiana Tech had five and Fresno State and New Mexico State had four a piece.

    THAT’S HOW YOU REPRESENT!!!

  100. Kazz May 6, 2009 11:50 am

Thinking back to the Wahine WAC honors, I am little disappointed Clare Warwick didn’t get 1st team honors. Her play, as mentioned in the press release, at 3rd base was stellar. Granted she struggled at bat for the most part of the regular season, but they cannot deny what she meant to the team overall.

Rickettsโ€ฆ no surprise. She did some damage to other teams in the conference. Kate Holverson for Nevada was the WAC Pitcher of the Year, but I really think it was ONLY due to the fact that Ricketts was a freshman. Ricketts in her first year is likeโ€ฆ what? Only the 5th Rainbow Wahine to get 20+ wins in a season. Last time I saw, her ERA was at 1.90-ish and this was during the NMSU series and we all know how she faired against BSU.

ST was right in saying “watch Tauali’I this season”. Her and Milca lighted up the Manoa sky and led this team on offense. Tauali’I also showed her toughness as I can recall at least three collisions while hustling to get her “man” out.

Pu’u-Warren looked a bit shakey at times at center field and was slow to start at the plate as many were this season, but she showed she can be relied upon as she obviously did well in WAC play with timely and consistent trips at the plate.

Does Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu get some kind of WAC “Longest Name in the League” award? ๐Ÿ˜† I am hoping for the Wahine to win the tournament and get into regional play for two reasons. One well because they are our team, and two, I want to hear a mainland broadcaster ATTEMPT to say her name. Not just “Duhaylonsod” or just “Kaleimamahu”, but BOTH.

Seriously though, I first got a good look at her in the Cal-Berkley series when Coolen got her up to the pitching circle. At that time, we didn’t know who our pitcher was going to be. Coming out of Mililani as a true freshman and pitching in Division I softball or in any sport is not easy. She struggled that night, the whole team did. She really made her mark at the plate displaying some “MANA” in her swing with what seems like very little physical effort. Another great pickup for the team and she’ll be a household name in Wahine softball for years to come whether people with a hard time pronouncing her name will like it or not!

Again, awesome job to all the honorees and of course to the coaching staff and their teammates for helping them get recognized!

  105. Garret May 6, 2009 12:08 pm

    da princess’ classmate,

Miami drafting 2 WRs and getting Camarillo back from injury (he was ahead of Bess before he got injured last season) does give Bess a lot of competition. But one of the WRs they drafted is a 6’4″ outside WR, so he’s not a threat to Bess at slot receiver (he’ll probably take Wilford’s job). The Ohio State slot receiver they took (4th round?) does worry me, but Bess proved himself last year and he’ll earn his spot again this time.

To me, the big battle is between Camarillo and Bess–one of them will be the starting slot receiver. Camarillo was a vet who beat out Bess last year, but he’s coming off injury and Bess has a year in the NFL behind him now. There is a BIG difference in reps for the starting and backup slot receiver.

Miami needed depth at receiver, so them drafting two guys made sense. They didn’t sign any big free agent WRs, which is good for their current receivers. Remember, they ended their season having just 2 WRs active for their playoff game…and when Bess got hurt, they were down to just 1 WR!

Vikings coach Brad Childress is expected to depart for Mississippi later today and meet with quarterback Brett Favre tonight and Thursday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Actually have never seen him play football. Only have read about the accolades in the HA. But at 6-3 and his mentioned leadership qualities and recent work ethic definately deserves a look. There has been a lot of success in transforming Hoops players to F-Ballers. Alama Francis, Akpan and at a bigger scale A Gates and T Gonzales. Im assuming he has leaping ability and decent speed. Not with his accuracy off the tee at lows, his driving distance below 295 and his GIR down….i will say his short iron game has gotten better and his putting can be awesome if not deadly inside 6′.
I do believe he will get better by the time August rolls around–its still a matter of his body getting into golfing shape.

yes, tiger is inconsistent off the tee right now but i will never count him out. tiger’s game cannot wait for august to roll around and right now he
is dialed in to june 18-21, 2009 u.s. open at bethpage black in new york. at this stage in his career, its all about the majors, and he won the us open at bethpage in 2002 and he will be the favorite this year again no doubt.

Great news that football, basketball (both teams), and all the other programs aside from baseball will not lose ANY scholarships because of their APR scores! Baseball had an APR of 922 (925 is the target) and lost 0.27 of a scholarship.

    Congratulations to UH women’s volleyball!

UH women’s volleyball had the highest score among UH sports with 996 and earned a recognition award from the NCAA. Indoor and outdoor track was next at 976. The highest-scoring men’s sport was tennis was 982.

Last year, UH men’s basketball lost two scholarships, football one and baseball 0.48.

  138. Ralph May 6, 2009 1:31 pm

baseball lost scholarships on the last APR go around….coach T has to do a better job of running the program, he can’t just coach and let everything else fall by the wayside. the Grandslam fundraiser helps but disbanding the Hui Kini Popo booster club under Les was foolish. He needs to run a bb program and not limit his role to only coaching and collecting his paycheck

  146. warriorfanny2 May 6, 2009 1:56 pm

Tiger himself has declared he doesnt know when his body will get back into the shape it needs to be but feels it will comeback.
He admits his swing-speed is below his normal and doesnt have the ‘pop’ on his drive he used to and says he just needs to keep “dialing-up” until it returns.

His comeback isnt a matter of swing change or adjusting to new equipment. Tiger had major knee-reconstruction and although he feels great, his body needs to re-boot.

That takes time he said. No one is projecting early summer or late summer–but they are asking Tiger himself and the #1 golfer in the world said, “I dont know”.

At the TPC Sawgrass, the stadium course is the biggest star.
Players refer to it has the best tournament and field on the PGA tour and unofficially label it as the “5th-major”.
The only top 150 cancelling is cuz of injury.

Again, Dean Wilson, will officially start the TPC Sawgrass at 1:20 am HST, as he tees off on #1, Par 4, 423 yards.

The Dawgs looked sluggish in the spring but we are still optimistic that Joe Cox and an improved offensive line will have us playing well by the end of the season. We will really miss Knowshon but we have some great receivers for Joe to throw to and there are some other good running backs too. We should be alright. If we can just find a way to beat Florida it will be a great year.

basketball JC coach says Kurtz, our new recruit, needs some work on offense…oh, oh! we needed someone up front, a difference maker, a big body who can score, rebound, control the paint, and block shots, we don’t need a project for the future. what is Nash thinking, he got a token 1 year roll over with a mandate to win 18 games or get into the NCAA over the next two seasons. if he flops in 2010, its over…the FUTURE is NOW….

  182. Ralph May 6, 2009 4:30 pm

checked the UH past rosters, the other 7′ was chris botez…lots of hype of running the floor well with a good intermediate range shot….sat on the bench most of his career at UH….can’t wait for next season, did Nash and Wheeler find a gem or a rock that needs a lot of polishing before it has any market value. I hope JD can make the call if it turns ugly…

  183. warriorfanny2 May 6, 2009 4:49 pm

    Key words: “last time”.

    Tonight is tonight.

  188. Ralph May 6, 2009 5:04 pm

Kurtz average under 6 points last season, 9.6 this season, with his rebounding both seasons between 5 and 6 boards average per game…so who is suppose to help Flemings score from the paint, what about the intermediate shot where Flemings is also lacking, and beyond the arc. Does Nash know what his team needs to compete next season or is he clueless? if your team doesn’t score a lot of points, chances are your team will lose because our defense sucks as bad as the offense did last year. and Nitoto left…

  189. Ralph May 6, 2009 5:17 pm

top 3, 0-0, Ricketts with 2 Ks, Krieg with 2Ks…UH is home team, when they come to back, Milca will start off

  190. kama krab May 6, 2009 5:21 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

What’s all this negativity about our new BB recruit. I’m not trying to stand up for our lame duck coach but he is filling a need. The need is for a big man that can bang down low. We DO NOT need another low post scorer, what we need is someone to block shots and rebound. Even though it looks like he is not a double double guy with high rebounding numbers, it does look like he does the job on the defensive boards, which is a need. With returnees like Rod Flemings, Balocka, Amis, and you add Lay and Williams, it looks like we have our inside and outside scoring taken care of. So I think this recruit covers a need, someone who can take up space and do the garbage work. We just need this guy to come to work with his lunch pale and bang away and let the other guys get the numbers. JMO

  191. Ralph May 6, 2009 5:21 pm

    Chawan,

Ohhhhh, you have no idea… ๐Ÿ™

  200. kama krab May 6, 2009 5:29 pm

Another thing I would like to point out about this recruit is his FG percentage and FT percentage. I think I read somewhere that his FG percentage was somewhere in the 60 percentile and his FT percentage was in the 80 percentile, so what it looks like to me is that when he gets the ball he puts it in the basket and when he gets fouled he is almost automatic. Before people get down on this new recruit or the coaches for recruiting him you need to look at the whole picture. You need to look at the type of system he was in to see why his ppg where so low and you need to see what type of scoring was done by the team to see why his rpg where so low. It is jmo but I feel that Nash is now starting to fill immediate needs and if he can change his system to much more up tempo game, then I think we might just have something going next year. Again JMO

  201. Ralph May 6, 2009 5:30 pm

  205. Ralph May 6, 2009 5:33 pm

    Wahine,

LaTech is not 4, 5,6, 7, or even 1,000 runs better than you. They play against the SAME conference opponents as you did this season and there is a reason you have more wins than they do. They’re not even one run better than you. This is your tournament to lose. Nevada didn’t dominate you in the regular season and then ranked #22 Fresno State failed against you all on their home field, right in that very same spot you are all standing on as I write this.

You’re good. Show it. Play it. Believe it.

  232. Ralph May 6, 2009 6:39 pm

I wonder if there is a rain delay, nothing for 20 minutes, top 7….Kazz must have put his mojo on the Techies

  233. Kazz May 6, 2009 6:43 pm

Rain delay or not. Hasn’t the game gone far enough for the score, if it still is 4-0, to stand and count as the final?

  234. Kazz May 6, 2009 6:45 pm

    Ralph,

“Mojo” has more of a “lighter” connotation. What was going on in my head was quite “un-holy”… There’d be more than a rain delay… ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

  235. Kazz May 6, 2009 6:49 pm

    Well, there it is.

    FINAL – LaTech 7 UH 1.

Wow. Guess we gotta do this the hard way.

We play either Boise State or Fresno State tomorrow.

    Wow.

    I’m speechless.

The Wahine are better than this. MUCH better than this display.

  236. Kazz May 6, 2009 7:03 pm

There is no sugar-coating thisโ€ฆ really.

It’s one thing to lose, it’s another to get dominated. LaTech is NOT seven runs better than this team. Nope. The Wahine are capable of beating every team in this tournament.

Not sure what happened tonight and now it doesn’t matter. Tomorrow will be here sooner than later and this tomorrow is the last of the “tomorrows” for the eight players on this team that will not wear a Rainbow Wahine uniform again after this season.

But, they don’t need to be reminded that, nor should they. They have come a long way over their careers and they need to pick this team up. I can only believe they will. Not “hope”, but “believe”.

When pushed, you don’t “push” back, you put them DOWN so they’ll never push again!

  237. Kekoa May 6, 2009 7:20 pm

Kazz ~ Relax, chill. The women will find a way tomorrow, you know they will.

  238. Ralph May 6, 2009 7:21 pm

La Tech peaked at the right time last year, coming in the tournament with a losing rcord or near losing record and winning the WAC championship..

  239. Ralph May 6, 2009 7:24 pm

my gametracker is still in the 6th inning….thanks for the up date, I guess there wasn’t a rain delay…

  240. Kazz May 6, 2009 7:28 pm

    Kekoa,

Yes I know. As I noted above, I don’t “hope” they will win tomorrow, I “believe”.

What didn’t help me out was that someone told me the game would be on KKEA 1420 and it wasn’t.

Nothing worse than having no real access to an away game.

It’s like that movie “Rookie of the Year” where the kid’s pitching coach locks himself in a locker while the big part of the game is happening and all he can do is bang on the walls while he hears the roar of the crowd through the walls.

It’s torture to have to cheer from “a far”.

  241. Kazz May 6, 2009 7:30 pm

    Ralph,

Thanks for the updates though. Man, that seemed like a fast game…

  242. Garret May 6, 2009 7:37 pm

jm2375, Liz, and other Tsaikos with Dish DVRs,

Have you been to dish.sling.com? You can actually program your DVR over the web if your DVR is connected to the internet (I have it plugged into my cable modem since I do not have a phone line and don’t want to pay the fee). Searching for shows is easy with the grid, and you just click on it to set your DVR timer.

This website won’t be officially announced until Friday, but I tried it out today and it already works fine for me. There is no fee for using the service.

  243. Garret May 6, 2009 7:38 pm

  246. Garret May 6, 2009 7:43 pm

    merv,

Great to see you posting here again! Georgia has had so many good recruiting classes that you’ll reload quickly after losing Stafford/Moreno/etc.

I saw that Georgia just gave a HUGE guarantee to another WAC school (about $1 mil for them to play in Georgia)…I would love for the Warriors to play at Georgia and get a payday like that. However, UH’s AD seems to have indicated before the Florida game last season that UH won’t be traveling too far east for road games…but maybe $1 million could convince UH otherwise!

  247. Ralph May 6, 2009 7:48 pm

I think UH got less than 600K for the Florida game and coach Mac mentioned that normally a game like that on ESPN should have paid at least a million. the last AD botched the negotiations, clueless on the going rate for such games with the SEC

  248. Kazz May 6, 2009 7:49 pm

    Garret:

    May 6th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
    Kazz,

It was probably good for you that you couldn’t hear or watch the game…that would have been a hard game to sit through!

Not really. I’ve sat through some of their struggles at home earlier this season. The worst being in the 2009 Chevron Spring Fling Tournament against Cal-Berkley.

In this tournament setting I’d rather have some access to the games via radio or TV of course, but NCAA softball doesn’t get any TV coverage this early on the post season.

I like to feel that if they loose I loose too. Same with all our spectator sports (football, baskeball, volleyball, baseball, and softball). It makes it more personal, it makes me feel more connected with all our teams, it makes me feel better in that way.

If any of our teams loose, I want to feel like I lost with them. I want to feel that loss as much as possible… as humanly possible (Hawaii Bowl 2008 was an exception as I had to leave late in the 4th to stop myself from jumping off the raining in the lodge section).

We’ve all done it at some point. The vonCrappen years, some of JJ’s losing seasons, the Sugar Bowl, etc…

    Why?

Because… when we do win, we win together. It’s so much better. We as fans may not have real battle scars, but the emotional ones we do have. While it’s not really as bad as what the players feel, we do feel something. It may vary from fan to fan, but it’s still something.

Sounds “lame” but that is the only way I can rationalize it.

  249. Kazz May 6, 2009 7:51 pm

    Ralph,

So you’re calling it then? Boise State beats Fresno State tomorrow?

Ah… who cares. Both will eventually become the next victims…

  250. Kazz May 6, 2009 7:56 pm

    ST,

Why do the people with the ugliest cars feel like they have to take up two stalls to prevent them from getting scratched? ๐Ÿ˜†

Happens a lot in the Pearl Kai Shopping Complex parking lot.

  251. Ralph May 6, 2009 7:59 pm

i thought Fresno vs bsu is tonight. nonetheless, FSU beats BSU, we beat FSU and the bows beat FSU.

  252. Ralph May 6, 2009 8:02 pm

Kazz don’t pee on the ugliest car in the parking lot taking up two stalls…the last guy who did got stomped to death and his assailant got convicted of a misdemeanor and a one year sentence.

  253. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2009 8:05 pm

    Kazz:
That’s actually one of our photographers.
Worse, he’s got the aisle parking.

  254. Garret May 6, 2009 8:06 pm

    Ralph,

The new CBS TV contract with the SEC means that they will be getting a LOT more money for each home game. They get no TV money for nonconference road games, but they do get TV money for nonconference home games. So, the SEC will be paying a lot more money for home games, and recently I’ve seen up to $1.2 million for a D-IAA or Sun Belt teams to play at SEC stadiums.

HF really didn’t get enough for the contract with Florida, especially considering the travel costs. I like UH playing top opponents, but I’d like for UH to get paid the going rate for those deals. It is great that UH fans on the mainland (and in Hawaii) can easily see UH in Vegas, but I’m guessing UH doesn’t make much for playing in Vegas.

  255. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2009 8:07 pm

Just after graduating from college, my mother-in-law bought me a car.
I would wash it a couple of times a week, keep it out of the sun. You get the picture.
My friend Harrison said I was being too fussy.
So he spit on the car.
And that ended the new-car feeling.
I think I should spit on the car.

  256. Stephen Tsai May 6, 2009 8:10 pm

Wow. I forgot about Chase Holbrook.
Gee, Holbrook and Ian Johnson don’t get drafted.

  257. Garret May 6, 2009 8:11 pm

It is hard to believe that Texas Tech’s QB may not even get into an NFL training camp. He still doesn’t have a contract…will he not even get a shot to play in a preseason game? Harrell was in the Browns rookie camp with David Veikune.

The staff felt Harrell, who participated in rookie camp on a tryout basis, picked up the system quickly and has great potential, the source said. However, the team let him leave town without a contract, in part because it currently has four quarterbacks on the roster: Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Brett Ratliff and Richard Bartel.

So, kind of a mixed bag there. They said they liked him, but they didn’t give him a contract, because they already have guys like Brett Ratliff and Richard Bartel. That’s kind of like a girl telling you, “Oh yeah, I really think you’re a sweet guy. So, yeah, I’ll be over in the corner making out with the guy in the upside-down visor.”

  258. Garret May 6, 2009 8:14 pm

I cannot understand how UC San Diego could make such a high-profile admissions error again! First they sent acceptance notices to *all* high school applicants, including the list of people that were actually rejectedโ€ฆnow, they sent rejection notices to 607 transfer students they planned to accept! I’m glad that UH isn’t making this type of high-profile admissions errors, and I’m guessing some people in the Admissions department at UC-SD will be looking for a new job soon.

  259. Garret May 6, 2009 8:17 pm

    ST,

The NFL really is emphasizing measurables over college production. That helped people like Veikune and Mouton who had awesome measurables, but hurt Adam and Sol (and Colt/Bess/RGM/Rivers last year). I think that scouts really want to be able to cover themselves by being able to point to measurables if a draft pick is a bust…

RE: that photo of a car taking two stalls.

That may be a good idea for a column.. one called… “That’s Just Rude!” And have people send in pictures with comments of people being rude or breaking laws because they lack manners or are thoughtless. The person in charge pics the best pic of the day and the runner-ups.

evening tsai-ko sports fans, fuuud enthusiastic, spirits experts and general all around knowledgeable peeps……how was your day? know that each one of you made the 808 a better space and place.

just checked the HHSSA state bball web site and not to my surprise the OIA seed always seem to have the ๐Ÿ˜ฎ harder road to the championship game. the powers ๐Ÿ˜ก to be have place two our of three ILH qualifies in their bracket. no wonder wnakama wrote “tourny is up for grabs” big duah. If PC is to make it to the finals and win it they have to beat all the ILH qualifiers. not saying it can’t be done but ghees louise have some compassion. their hard road begins tomorrow and I wish them well.

    off the stage now

yep saturday approaching fast and man we all can use the wind down and more inu inu aka aka

welcome back frank if you made it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  275. al โ„ข May 6, 2009 9:55 pm

on leahey and leahey….you mentioned that it was taking way too long to hire a women’s bb and men’s vb coach. i do agree, but, when delays happen it quite often entails some kind of political influence.

jd, needs to just do the right thing and hire whom he sees fit to be the best candidate.

Whatever the results may be of Junior Day, I’m just estatic that we have one!

I still recall when Garret first mentioned the idea of how Texas coach Mac has been using the day to his advantage for years with great success.

Pretty cool we’re doing it too.

  290. Kekoa May 6, 2009 11:47 pm

Lt NS Sherlock ~ I stand corrected Lt. I apologize for the 0-1/0-2 mixup…however, I thought it was a careless ‘butterbar’ statement made by Lt. Allard in this case.

I’ll bet the Navy commanders here will prolly use this as an opportunity despite what the good Lt. back there in the Pentagon thinks.

They will surely think of a way this game can showcase what the Navy has done to impact the island and it’s local economy.

Navy folks will travel with the team from near and far because it is a destination that has deep meaning to them in so many ways.

I think most may have even served a tour here once upon a time. Nothing like coming back to see how their team measures up against Hawaii. (Did I mentioned the first Poly coach is in command?)

Youngsters attending the game may be able to see the Navy personnel standing tall and looking sharp! Great time to strut your stuff there, Lt.

Military members from the other branches of service will also be in attendance. They will stand proud along with retirees and veterans. For the Navy not to see this as a chance to hoist their flag a little higher is like…missing the boat. You might want to give them a wake up call.

Whitey ~ Keep the Starship fleet on standby!
