Still working

The Warriors will not practice today.

But, as coach Nick Rolovich noted, this is not an off day.

The Warriors’ schedule was to gather for breakfast, watch the telecast of the Purdue-Nevada game, then have a walk-through session.

Breakfast, game, walk-through …

Or maybe it was in a different order.

The Warriors’ next practice is Monday morning ahead of next Saturday’s MWC opener against Nevada.

Darn, Wolfpack kicker missed from 26.

Nevada calls a timeout to run a play that loses five yards.

The kicker, a good kicker, misses from short distance, badly.

If these games are choreographed, Purdue will score and cover.

  4. A-House September 24, 2016 8:58 am

this is the 4th time that I posted only to have my post destroyed because ST closed it out for a new “post”

was saying that I am prepared to walk out if IW starts against Reno [ refuse to call them Nevada ]

support the team you say – well there are multitude ways to show support: $$ donations; time/effort; labor/materials to repair; vocal/written to elected officials { not only for Oahu, but to ‘all’ for outer islands also support UH }; buy season ticket(s) for multiple sports — and the beat goes on!!!

wonder if there is a plan in place on how to utilize those, young and older, who wish to do something for the Athletic Department — I would perish if I held my breath — would it be welcomed? oh, there are those who point to “liability” issues — OK, what about all those who volunteer for school projects? money making projects?

surely, there is an “umbrella” wherein all those would be covered for liability concerns — there would be NO work comp coverage based on existing labor law and court decisions in Hawaii.

therefore, how will you “support” UH athletics????

  5. Maddog50 September 24, 2016 9:04 am

Wolfpack are going down to Purdue after Purdue has done everything to give them the game. 5 turnovers 2 of which were inside Nevada 5!!! Don’t care who starts-I want a win period.

  6. Shoko September 24, 2016 9:36 am

A-House, always remember to copy prior to submitting a lengthy post especially when it gets closer to a new blog entry.

I think next game will be Nevada’s fourth time playing a team that is coming off a bye week.

Pray for the return of the island curse next weekend. Hopefully it turns out to be a competitive game that goes down to the wire.

  7. H-Man September 24, 2016 9:45 am

Just a W would be great.

  8. papajoe2 September 24, 2016 10:45 am

Shoko #6. I recall last year and prior years we had the same kind of schedule that Nevada is having. Ours was worst because of the time and wear it takes to travel.

I am still a little skeptical about the Rolo hire over June Jones. Rolo is the young sexy hire that most Hawaii fans where begging for and I don’t see a problem hiring Rolo. But he did hire a lot of young coaches around him; some his team mates from Hawaii. I not comparing the infamous Norm Chow hire of Luke Matthew and Jordan Wynn to the young coaches on Rolo staff but that lack of coaching experience (FBS and NFL coaching experience) on this staff is concerning.

Rolo might need to hire some veteran coaches to help him scheme and put the players in position to make plays, Not comparing Rolo to Future Hall of Fame Coach Bill Belichick but we have to admit that even though Future Hall of Fame QB Tom Brady is out for 4 games, Coach Belichick and his staff know how to plug in players into there system and also scheme the offense to the back QB strengths. With back up QB Jimmy Garoppolo starting Belichick and his staff adjusted the offensive scheme and won games and then this week the 3rd string QB Jacoby Brissett got the start due to injury. Belichick and his staff adjusted to Brissett strength of being a mobile QB and ran the option on offense against a good Houston defense for a blow out win.

Listen, nobody questions the love for Hawaii Rolo and former teammates that are now on coaching staff have for Hawaii. But I’m thinking that Rolo young coaching staff might get out coached by other teams that have more experienced coaching staff. A wise man knows when to ask for help and Rolo might want to consider bringing in some experienced veteran Ex-NFL type coaches to help him build Hawaii back to college football respectability.

There are always coaches ex–NFL experience or not looking for work, when Rolo said he became very popular with my friends and coaches when he got the Head Coach job. Rolo wasn’t joking, he was serious. But he hired his heart and brought in some of his buddies, which may or may not work out.

Treason if you left your troops in the battlefield.

There’s always those subliminal messages the average joe are not seeing.
In fact, such was the main topic of discussion during lunch with a fellow Tsaiko (in the know) the other day.

Our cupboards were left bare by the florist.
It’ll take time, 2-3 years to have what it takes.

Certain things can’t be coached up. Physical attributes for example’ speed, athleticism, size, etc.

In another words, you can take a team of double A players to the World Series unless you bought tickets.

Patience. If no can, then go ahead and get off the bus. But, I bet you’ll watch from PPV.

  11. Imua808 September 24, 2016 11:34 am

June supposedly left the cupboard bare for Mack, yet Mack went to 2 bowl games, won a WAC championship

Mack supposedly left the cup boards bare for Chow and we know where that went.

Now Chow left the cup boards bare for Nick? I look at it this way, we are Hawaii, our cupboards will always seem bare. A great coach will take what’s given to him and turn a program around in 1-2 years.

Hawaii fans cannot wait 3 years for a bowl game. Bring back Rich Miano to coach LBs & Jeff Reinbold to coach special teams.

  12. Manu September 24, 2016 11:40 am

With all due respect, please proofread your posts before posting it. I usually just read comments here and rarely make comments but I have to say it is getting very difficult to comprehend what is being written. Proper sentence structure is practically non existent. I like reading what most of you post but lately it is very convoluted and confusing. Sorry for sounding like the proverbial “grammar Nazi”.

  13. locomoco September 24, 2016 11:48 am

“June supposedly left the cupboard bare for Mack, yet Mack went to 2 bowl games, won a WAC championship”

Really? Mack inherited a team that the year before went undefeated in the regular season and got to a BCS game. Not everyone on that team graduated. There were some juniors and sophomores contributing and getting experience in-system. Hence the next two years of success, but in decline. Mack’s coaching staff included many non-recruiters, and that doesn’t cut it today.

I won’t even get into the total mess that was the Chow era.

But Rolo and his crew are building for success.

  14. Buffoman September 24, 2016 1:00 pm

Watching the Tennessee v Florida game. Tennessee D is terrific in the second half. Amazing. The D changed the game from being 21 down to scoring 35 point and not allowing Florida a 1st down until 7:36 in the 4th quarter. Would love to see our defense start looking like that in conference.

  15. 808 September 24, 2016 1:00 pm

June Jones did great for Hawaii football. If he got hired, I’m not sure he would have been as successful the second time around.

The run and shoot would have been exciting to watch again. But, what if at year 2 or year 3 here, he says he’s tired of football again and he just needs a break. He then leaves the program unexpectedly and leaves it in far worse condition than when he entered.

June June’s has passed the prime of his coaching career. Would he have the same drive to recruit players as when he first started?

I thought for sure UH would have hired Jones in November. But, after reflecting back, Matlin made the right call considering the school’s financial situation.

Rolo will get it done. Hawaii will win, win,…, and win again.

  28. cocobean September 24, 2016 6:58 pm

This team could really benefit from larger crowds at home – especially from the students. Today’s scoreboard shows the teams we’ve played and the schools we will play were or will be a challenge. There’s no gimmies. UTM beat Latech. Boise beat OSU. FSU and UNLV lost in OT to non power 5 DI schools. The other MWC teams played power 5 schools pretty tough with the exception SJSU.

Rolo is trying his best to rebuild and restore. The team deserves more support from the stands. Maybe that’s the spark the team needs to ramp their mental and emotional game. You can’t play competitive football without playing smart – knowing and doing your assignments. And you can’t play competitive football without the right level of emotions.

A -House the teams needs your butt in the seats and your voice cheering them on.

  29. Former UH Athlete September 24, 2016 8:54 pm

    FYI… Thought this was interesting:

Following Notre Dame’s loss to Duke and a poor start to the season, coach Brian Kelly stated the following:

“Every position, all 22 of them, will be evaluated… There is no position that is untouchable on this football team… So, if you want to play for me moving forward, you better — I don’t care what your résumé says, I don’t care if you’re a 5-star recruit, if you had 100 tackles, 80 receiptions or 30TDs– you better have some damn fire and energy in you. We lack it. We lack it. Severely.”

Kelly described quarterback DeShone Kizer’s play as “below standard” and “not acceptable” after the redshirt sophomore threw for 381 yards and rushed for 60 but turned over the ball twice.

Even though I don’t like ND in general, if I were a ND fan, I’d love hearing this from the coach. At least you know the coach is all-in with the program and will start lighting down fires under the roster, unlike some of the mopey pressers given by the past two UH coaches.

Rolo is sort doing the same thing, but lacks the conviction BKelly is bringing. Maybe it’s Rolo’s lack of experience, but it’s probably more from ND being one of the most high profile/high pressure jobs in College FB.

  30. Former UH Athlete September 24, 2016 8:59 pm

    28. The crowds won’t come back until UH makes two bowl games in a row. Even then, unless another 11+ win season is imminent UH has little hope for getting 40,000+ ever again.

Poor overall stadium experience + traffic (when times are good) + the convenience of PPV will forever limit attendance at Aloha Stadium.

  31. Ohana Hawaii September 24, 2016 9:02 pm

GO WARRIORS! Let coach Rolovich and his coaching staff do whatever their have to do!. Because it’s a new season and now it counts! They’re entering the Mountain West on Saturday!. I just came back from a vacation to Miami!. I have gone to see University of Central Florida game! They were playing against Florida International University. Boy! I never see him before! But today!. I’ve really seen him play! No. 10 McKenzie Milton he is really seriously awesome! But did some mistakes. I know he will be doing it! Because he is learning each days in college level of play!. He is making a name for himself in Florida!. Some said that? He is another Marcus Mariota! Even the broadcast made a mistake by calling him Mariota again!. He is four times better then Woolsey!. Milton has the speed and the arm!. But he do makes a little mistakes!. Not like Woolsey he doesn’t have any of that!. Now! I know why that Mililani High School football program were great the pass two years ago!. McKenzie Milton were be a great quarterback at Central Florida! I really seriously won’t believe that? If he would transfer back to Hawaii sometime in his career? If he does it will be a great help for UH program!

  32. Former UH Athlete September 24, 2016 9:08 pm

If you remember, in 2006, which in my opinion was the best UH team ever, only averaged 36,000+ at Aloha Stadium. The only sellout was senior night vs Oregon St.

The 2007 team averaged 43,000+ at home. With all the hype leading into 2007, fans only created two sold out Aloha Stadium in the final two home games.

And this was the pinnacle of UH football.

  33. NorthShoreFan September 24, 2016 9:12 pm

    Guud Evening Tsaikos…Bootiful Night!
watching the Farrington-Kapolei gae…Farrington OL dude…6’2″ 412#!??!! whoa!! get out of the way son!
Really smash mouth football dis one.
Notre Dame coach sound like Rolo…”you better have some damn fire and energy in you. We lack it. We lack it. Severely.”…should add…or else….

  34. Former UH Athlete September 24, 2016 9:21 pm

Milton is a gamer, but let’s hold off on the Mariota comparisons. Just physically, Milton is a lot smaller. is the main reason why UH was in the drivers seat to get him until UCF stole him away. I think all of the Power 5 schools passed on Milton due to size (under 6 ft and slender), and especially after his shoulder injury during his Sr year.

After watching some film back when he was tearing up OIA, I could see some greatness in his game, but the size and durability issue will always be there. I do think UCF is a good fit for Milton since Scott Frost is the coach (former Oregon OC). Frost’s offense is a good fit for the strengths in Milton’s game. Like I said the kid’s a gamer.

  35. Ohana Hawaii September 24, 2016 9:25 pm

Hey! FUA & 28! The University of Hawaii AD should reschedule all they’re future schedule!. Keep teams like UCLA, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Arizona, Western Kentucky, Wisconsin, Navy and BYU!. And drop the other teams!. Try to reschedule with larger universities like? LSU, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Baylor, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Central Florida, South Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Duke, West Virginia and Penn State!. If Hawaii did beat any two teams like them! Plus the team that been kept on the schedule! UH do that the next two years. The fans really start showing up!. Because the teams that University of Hawaii beat will make a national news the biggest upset!.

  36. Former UH Athlete September 24, 2016 9:28 pm

    Brah… That Penn St kicker…

That’s two cracks delivered this season.

  37. 808 September 24, 2016 9:36 pm

“Kelly described quarterback DeShone Kizer’s play as “below standard” and “not acceptable” after the redshirt sophomore threw for 381 yards and rushed for 60 but turned over the ball twice.”

If that’s below standard by Brian Kelly’s standard, IW wouldn’t even be in the discussion. Norte Dame expects to Win and Hawaii hopes to win.

Attendance at the stadium is not going to be what it used to be in the mid 80’s.

A lot of people now watch UH warrior football through PPV. There are no hassles with traffic. You are in the company of family and friends. Plus, the food is a lot better!

  38. Former UH Athlete September 24, 2016 9:39 pm

    35. For teams of UH’s profile, scheduling with the big boys a catch-22…

When UH isn’t good, it’s easy to book games vs Power 5 teams as UH would be viewed as a W toward their bowl eligibility. When UH was good in the past or posed the threat of a loss, Power-5 teams have cancelled, sometimes on late notice, which leaves UH scrambling to fill the slot and typically is forced to bring in the UT-Martins of the world.

Non-conference scheduling is usually booked 3-5 years in advance. That’s why scheduling is tricky. If a team cancels a game 1-2 years prior, it’s not easy to fill as most other teams are already booked full. You are only going to get fill-in opponents if they happen to have a bye week they are willing to give up or a FCS team that will take UH’s subsidy to make the trip.

  39. Ohana Hawaii September 24, 2016 9:56 pm

Hey! FUA! What about McKenzie Milton size! They are great player in NFL and College levels! Like former Kent State quarterback Julian Edelman! Now he is a great Pro football player for New England Patriots! He is smaller then Milton! And remember they are much more players around the countries is smaller than 6’1 that is to small in the NFL!. If some teams have them? They’re on the bench or a third string quarterback or ready to be cut from the team. If you really want to see what is a small in high school football player? Former UH
Athletes like you say about Milton! You up on the YouTube about the 4′ 5 running back.

  40. Ohana Hawaii September 24, 2016 10:05 pm

Here a kid with a large of heart! Playing high school football with kids are twice his size!. His name is Adam Reed! He is only a 4’5 and 95lb. But his a large heart to play runningback!

  41. cocobean September 24, 2016 10:11 pm

#30. What’s disappointing is the team is drawing less than last year. You’d think more people would come out and support Rolo. The general consensus seems to be Rolo is an improvement in terms of watchability and yet less people are coming out to watch.

In the past Hawaii had a reputation as having one of the best home field advantages in college football with the travel and the crowd noise. Now with the majority of teams coming in on charters mitigating the rigors of travel and the disappearing crowds it’s not close to the advantage it use to be.

It’s unrealistic to think the program can get back to where people want them to be with attendance at the levels they’re currently at. Attendance at historically low levels affects revenue and local recruiting. Why would any highly recruited local player want to play in front so few fans and students.

  42. Former UH Athlete September 24, 2016 10:17 pm

I don’t doubt Milton’s talent and ability. However coaches who’s opinions matter typically shy away from sub 6ft QBs. I do think Milton’s light weight (160lb) was the limiting factor in being passed over by big schools (prior to shoulder injury). His UCF bio currently lists him at 170lb.

I agree that there are several sub 6ft QBs that are great, but keep in mind that they are the exceptions, not the norm.

Russel Wilson is everybody’s shining example of short QBs, however, he’s also physically stalky. He was over 200lb coming out of high school and was also an MLB draftee. Baseball got him into NC St. not football, however he outperformed his QB competition at NC St, then transferred Wisc a nd the rest is history. Even with an outstanding year at Wisconsin, and good pre-draft workouts, Wilson dropped to the 3rd round due to his height.

It’s a stigma that will never go away. For every Russel Wilson, there are 20 Johnny Manziel’s, sans the cocaine and alcohol problems.

  43. Maddog50 September 25, 2016 1:57 am

For the record UTM beat Tennessee Tech not LA Tech. I look for an uptick in attendance this week vs Nevada. The teams we have played have already shown they are either dominant or mid-tier in Pac 12. UTM just getting started. With a solid win this week we will be in position to win at least 4 more total and maybe more. There is a lot more in the play book and stars on the rise in coming weeks. this should be a great week on the comeback trail. I wouldn’t miss it for anything!

  44. Maddog50 September 25, 2016 3:28 am

Couple observations from yesterday’s games-Nevada rushed for 68 total yards on 33 attempts passed for less than 200 on 33 attempts-ran quite a bit unbalanced formations and gave up 5 sacks. Only thing that stopped Purdue was Purdue-UNLV does some strange things on D-they repeatedly got beat on the deep sideline route and their running plays up the middle for the most part got stuffed. Both of these games were emotional for the winners-so what do we need this week? You betcha lotsa emotion!

Former UH Athlete, #32, as a good spirited debate, I would say that the 1981 bows were the best team ever. Now, allow me to set my argument:

    9-2 and this was before the plethora of made-up bowl games;

    Team played in the golden age of UH football, where the entire island was basically quiet and shut down for those 3-4 hours on those special Saturday evenings (it’s the reason I transferred);

I count 15, yes, 15 guys that went on to play on Sundays, and many of these guys had remarkably long careers, (Tui, Sapolu, Miano….)

    Go bows…

  48. H-Man September 25, 2016 8:54 am

    Here’s a link to the 1981 stats,
A 9-2 team that beat South Carolina, but how did you guys lose to Pacific?

  54. Sangamon Keith September 25, 2016 10:07 am

#53. We won’t run the table … that’s not realistic. However, I watched Nevada, San Jose State, UNLV and Fresno State during the last two weeks … all are beatable by the Warriors. I haven’t seen New Mexico, but we should have won last year … so I’ll say they are beatable too. UMass played a great game against Ole Miss … but they’ve never traveled this far to play a game. If we win those six games, we will have everyone on their feet! We should be favored in every home game for the rest of the year … I’m still going to just expect five wins and hope for a sixth!

  55. NorthShoreFan September 25, 2016 10:14 am

Yup, probably not but I would like to see our team go into conferece with a confidence that they can.

  56. Shoko September 25, 2016 10:29 am

I think any team is beatable that isn’t named Boise State or San Diego State. What is concerning is not so much the offense as it is the defense. I don’t think there is a quick fix for Lempa’s problems. If there is a QB that gives the Warriors the best chance of winning, its negated by a defense that gives them the best chance of losing.

  57. Shoko September 25, 2016 10:31 am
