Warriors hire WAC assistant

Brad Jones, the WAC’s director of championships, has been hired as the Warriors’ director of football administration, Norm Chow confirmed today.

* * * * * *

There will be a number of changes — for jerseys, that is — but so far the Warriors have not reissued the numbers worn by quarterbacks Tim Chang (No. 14) and Colt Brennan (No. 15).

Running back Joey Iosefa goes from No. 30 to No. 7, and defensive tackle Geordon Hanohano will wear No. 90 after being No. 51 last year. More switches are expected.

* * * * *

Spring training opens Tuesday, but look for dual-sport athlete Miah Ostrowski to be held out of contact drills until after spring break. The coaches want to give him more time to rest after he went non-stop from football to basketball.

New director of football administration. That was fast. Must be somebody good applied.

  5. cheepono March 15, 2012 8:46 am

what’s the difference between director of player development and director of football administration? how do the job duties differ?

Spring is the air! Can’t wait!

  7. papajoe2 March 15, 2012 8:48 am

Not giving anybody TC and CB numbers, the coaches must know they mean a lot to the fans. Both of them were known nationwide and even in Canada.

The first signs of trouble in the Chowfun era start to emerge. First, Chow let people go; now, people are voluntarily leaving, without the ushering of Chowfun.

Lots of fun to watch this train wreck slowly happening.

Thanks Chowfun. Have fun. Yeah, baby.

  9. Da Punchbowl Kid March 15, 2012 8:49 am

    # 7 ? Just another reason why seven is my favorite number.

  10. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2012 8:50 am

    Papajoe:

I just woke up. I was watching a video of the BYU game until 3. That was one bad second half that changed life the past three months.

  11. Numbers March 15, 2012 8:53 am

Yeah, at 8, these guys were so popular with the fans because of the extraordinary and stellar success they had playing in the NFL. Oops. My bad, wrong guys. These guys flopped in the NFL. Oops. Wrong blog. Oh well, since I’m here, yeah, retire those numbers. They should never be worn again because of the immense success associated with them. The two guys who wore them are legends in the NFL. Oops. Did it again. My bad.

  12. Da Punchbowl Kid March 15, 2012 8:54 am

You’ll get nightmares from that kind of late night fare, Mr. Tsai. “Sleep hygene” is important for us ole folks.

  13. papajoe2 March 15, 2012 8:55 am

ST, the last BYU game? Sorry, when somebody says BYU game, I can remember the licking we gave them with Gabriel at qb. The rest (romps we took) kinds of fades.

  14. papajoe2 March 15, 2012 8:57 am

    8 & 11 same guy?

  15. Couch potato March 15, 2012 9:07 am

director of football administration? wot dat? who was the last one?

well, well…according to a family member, fehoko fanaika will be signing with lsu after all is said and done. it should be official very soon.

we went into overtime with this highly sought after prospect which speaks well about our potential in recruiting top prospects in the future.

While coaching, I knew some people wouldn’t like the methods we instill. Worst yet, some of the parents didn’t like the way we were coaching inspite of being very, very successful. How many times have I heard, “the coaches don’t know what they’re doing”, probably because their son wasn’t playing much or at all. The coaches job is to have everybody on the same page. If somebody refuses to get with the program or are not as talented as the rest of the teammates, then they will not have much playing time. Very few kids left the program though, but, by being negative and making noise, it surely does bring down the whole team. I, and most everybody else knew that the change with Coach Chow would not be very popular with everyone as with anyother coach who takes over a team that had almost the same type of system for 13 years. We just have to be patient and wait the 3 or 4 years needed for Coach Chow’s system to prove itself. If you think some of players are leaving now or not making it, wait till after spring training. That is when the coaches will see if the players put in what it takes to be on the team.

The antics of Nick West and his calk board messages at the Wahine VB match last night has many, many fans ticked off this morning.

One of his messages now posted online takes a cheap shot at Brittany Hewitt another uses the derogatory racial code word nizzle.

Grow up Nick. You might think you’re funny but we don’t.

  25. SteveM March 15, 2012 9:24 am

    Good morning everyone!

Just curious–what are the duties of the “Director of Football Administration”?

  26. Steve March 15, 2012 9:32 am

Pomai, was the lady sitting next to Mr. Robinson, Kaia’s mom?

  27. jkjones March 15, 2012 9:34 am

if memory serves me right–there were departures when MAC took the reigns from JJ.

It happens in coaching transitions. All over the college football globe–Penn State, Ohio State (didnt we get a 4-star transfer from the buckeyes due to change of coaching and system), Florida, Arizona, Fresno State and yes, Hawai’i.

Besides, Coach Chow’s O sytem is different, making certain positions literally extinct. Despite standing room only to audition for playing time in 2012 and a crowded field–how many warrior QBs can you cite with exit visas? Thought so.

To be sure, the determined athlete will find a way to fit. the others, will find an excuse to grouse….or leave.

Chow & staff are allowing players to freely select their positions, mainly because of system changes. it didnt take long for Craig Cofer (de), Darius Bright (wr) and Waylon Lolotai (ol) to request a position switch to TE. Bright is a senior. gootta luv his attitude. can do!

Coach granted immediate approval to all these players.

Look, the transition wont be easy. For players or coaches alike. take each day as it comes and make the best of your opportunities. everyone is on equal footing. it’s a fresh beginning with the exception of one time tested axiom–there are no entitlement positions in college football. you want it–earn it!

  28. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2012 9:36 am

There were two admin positions. Chow divided them into three (at the same amount). The new hire and Juan’s departure will make it two admin positions again. (At a lower rate.)

  29. Couch potato March 15, 2012 9:37 am

somehow lost in the shuffle of the mbb’s beat writer desk is the fact that miah ended up with the sixth highest assists per game nationally with 7.0 assists per game.

cp, you right, my wrong, ti leaves.

  50. bleedgreen March 15, 2012 10:02 am

Why are people saying “Give Chow 3-4 years to implement his system”? JD gave Dana three and fired her. Right after the last loss. Didn’t wait to return to Honolulu. Same should be for Chow. If he posts losing record three years in row, then change needed.

  51. al March 15, 2012 10:02 am

couch potato is the new “spell check” and it includes pronouns. haha.

  52. 99club March 15, 2012 10:07 am

    Good morning, Tsaikos!

Syracuse down by 4 at the half to #16 seed UNC Ashville. Bruce Hornsby’s (of Bruce Hornsby and the Range) kid is playing for UNC Ashville. The announcers are trying to work lines from Bruce’s songs into the commentary. Pretty funny. “That’s just the way it is…”

  53. papajoe2 March 15, 2012 10:08 am

I don’t know about the ti leaves anymore. How many times have we brought ti leaves in bulk to the game only to get romped. I can think of the last 2 times in Vegas. The last BYU game and many, many others. Its good for the fans though. It gets them into the game. I’m not saying don’t bring ti leaves, just saying don’t depend on it making us win games. Preparation, execution, and talent win games. JMHO.

  54. tom mui March 15, 2012 10:15 am

Maybe ST should really consider having people use their real names instead of blog names.

Maybe that way everyone will play nice instead of hiding behind blog names – why punish the nice guys for the remarks made by the trolls?

  55. Couch potato March 15, 2012 10:16 am

al, wot dat pronouns? nouns that are used in professional sentences and get paid big bucks?

  56. papajoe2 March 15, 2012 10:18 am

3 or 4 years, depending on the progress. I don’t expect them to do too well in the wins department this coming year, and the next year will probably be a very young team. College football teams has 105 players, offense, defense, and at least 4 different special teams. If the team looks organized, have good recruits (but the 1st 2 years would be very young or new to D1), but is not putting up a fantastic w/l record, then maybe 4 years. If the team flops from the begining and doesn’t seem to be improving, then 3 years. Sorry, but DTD’s team didn’t look like it improved much after 3 seasons. I’m not putting too much weight in the W/L record as much as improved play. Both didn’t look too good this past 3 seasons. Yes, she seems to have gotten some good recruits coming in next year, but they are just recruits and are not proven on the D1 level…….yet.

  57. mo808 March 15, 2012 10:20 am

Speaking of former #7 for the Warriors, Davone Bess, he’s got a new look.

    http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports_football_dolphins/2012/03/miami-dolphins-check-out-davone-bess-new-look.html

Hopefully, with the departure of Brandon Marshall he’ll get more looks from his new QB…Mr. Manning perhaps?

BTW – I can’t wait to purchase a green #2 Roughrider jersey with the name Brennan on the back.

    Shades of 2007.

  64. Kaimuki Kid March 15, 2012 10:45 am

    Couch potato:

    March 15th, 2012 at 10:21 am

tom mui, how is ST going to know what is a real name?

That is semi-possible since ST knows plenty and can draw on many resources (like S-A techs). As I recall, there is a name registration system in place for commenting on all Star-dvertiser stories and all the other blogs. All other poster comments are held for review by the host (moderator) before they appear.

The Warrior Beat was the exception (I think) since it had large 24/7 international audience and attempting to moderate it 24/7 in a timely manner is impossible for one person. That would eliminate the chat and instant info aspects that made this blog famous.

The use of a blog as chat was unseen in 2006. The chat comments lead to Blog Parties where bloggers met each other in person. Then the lunch Cattle Calls and the Tsai-kos were born. Then tailgates (here and on mainland), Karaoke Calls, etc. followed.

A blog name registration system (real name or not) would be the only way to preserve the unique nature of the Warrior Beat. Anonymous/guest comments would await moderation while the others would appear instantly as now. Of course, I volunteer to help ST with any registration system. 👿

  67. cheepono March 15, 2012 10:59 am

howzit pride. i seen your name somewhere, was able to put two and two together and figure out i went school with your grandson’s daddy, one hell of a fisherman and diver.

  68. mikey March 15, 2012 11:02 am

    3 min to go Syracuse winning by 62 – 42 over (16) UNC-Asheville

There bench is really coming thru with 31 points half of total points!

They were losing at half time.

  69. charsiubao March 15, 2012 11:07 am

    62 – 56 1:56 left

  70. mikey March 15, 2012 11:08 am

Opps sorry score should be by 62 – 56 Syracuse

  71. Couch potato March 15, 2012 11:08 am

SteveM, even with a registration system you still can submit a fake name. unless you going have the person register and show a valid id to you or ST or whoever is going to man the registration desk 24/7 then not going work.

  72. mikey March 15, 2012 11:09 am

I picked LB to win but they’re losing at half by score of 33 – 29

  73. Couch potato March 15, 2012 11:10 am

and who’s to say one person can’t register as many?

  74. cheepono March 15, 2012 11:16 am

as much as i favor accountability when it comes to people posting smack and hatred, a lot of good “inside” info has been posted here bc of the anonymity this blog provides. using real names would kill that facet of the blog, which i think is a very important dimension and driving factor for many who visit here.

seems like ST’s starting to lose his patience and getting a little trigger happy, killing off the comment section when things start getting out of hand. his house, his rules.

this is one of the most unique blogs i’ve ever come across. the comment section is more of a talk story/open discussion forum much like wsn or sh. i think the “problems” are just a few bad apples and would be easier solved by banning IPs.

    jmo though.

  75. mikey March 15, 2012 11:16 am

Looks like Syracuse going to win with few seconds left but they struggled against a (16) team.

Good thing I picked Kans State to win over Syracuse on Saturday.

  76. Stephen Tsai March 15, 2012 11:19 am

I’m surprised people don’t use their real names.

There are a lot of witty comments and observations. Why not get the recognition?

  77. Couch potato March 15, 2012 11:19 am

cheepono, an ip address could be a shared ip address and instead of banning one poster you could be banning a group of posters.

  79. SteveM March 15, 2012 11:24 am

Couch potato — good point. I do not believe that real names must be known. When dealing with persons of good will, their names will be known eventually as they attend various social functions. What is being regulated is the blog name that is allowed to log on and instantly post (yes, a log on system would be needed with registered name (real or not) and password). Humbug.

But this is all moot since this is not likely to happen.

    …I don’t think, anyway. 😕

  80. Derek March 15, 2012 11:26 am

    Just my opinion:

    1) Kaia Parnaby is pitching better than Ricketts. Better strikeout to walk ratio. Better ERA.

But Ricketts is a senior and has been the leader in her career to Coolen doesn’t want to mess the rotation. It will be interesting who will pitch tonight against Cal. Probably Ricketts. Tonight’s game is huge for the Wahine.

    2) Takahara-Dias got fired because the team didn’t improve, period. She didn’t do a god job of recruting and the team made a ton of turnovers. That combination is bad. If Donavan saw meaningful improvement and success on the court, he would have retained her.

    3) I think Manning will select Tennessee. He will not go to Arizona as he doesn’t want to play against his brother, unless it’s in the Super Bowl. Hence, he will stay in the AFC.

    4) The Chicago Bulls is my pick to make it to the NBA finals. The Okalahoma Thunder is my favorite for the Western Conference.

    5) Gib Arnold needs 2 more perimeter shooters around 6-5 to 6-7 types. The only reliable 3 point shooters are Brereton and Stokes. In a way, we missed Bo Barnes this past year. With him, we might have won 2, maybe 3 more games and with that we would be playing in a tournament somewhere. Barnes was a streak 3 pt shooter and adding 6 to 8 points per game would have been huge. He was also a good free throw shooter.

  81. Kevin March 15, 2012 11:49 am

No guarantees Ricketts starts tonight considering the match up against CAL and the way they run. Coolen has opined he favors the lefty vs lefty match ups.

  82. tom mui March 15, 2012 12:03 pm

The reason why I was pushing “real” names is probably I get sick of seeing trolls posting – and it always seems to be the same person or persons.

It is true that I know a lot of the posters by their blog names like Pride, DPK, AL etc but some of the poster(s) that spread their venom seem to be the same people.

Ignore the trolls may be sound advice but I just get irritated seeing their stuff, posing as supporters but being just the opposite.

  83. madeinhawaii March 15, 2012 12:11 pm

Hmm… I’ve been using “madeinhawaii” all over the internet since 1997.

    Old habits, I guess.

  85. madeinhawaii March 15, 2012 12:13 pm

    Tom Mui,

What’s the difference if they start using pseudo-real names like Barbara Walters? … How would you know?

  86. A-joe March 15, 2012 12:18 pm

“The Warriors might be hiring their director of football administration as early as today.”

Really? I thought Koakane and JD was just shooting the breeze at the softball game yesterday. I didn’t realize JD was asking for references on Al.

  91. Aloha March 15, 2012 12:33 pm

    Miah is playing again?

  92. Derek March 15, 2012 12:41 pm

Is Su’a Cravens not considering Hawaii? Maybe the brother doesn’t have any pull!!!! Seems like he was on the radar before and was offered a scholarship since last year, but now Hawaii is not even listed. If true, that’s too bad. He’s listed as a 5 star player and #2 rated in the country as a safety. Maybe Chow can re-visit or coach Jones.

  93. krump1_AKA_protector March 15, 2012 12:44 pm

    madeinhawaii on 87,

Maybe a rule could be made banning iconic pseudo-names unless they can prove it truly is their genuine coincidental (with a celebrity, for instance) name.

  94. Kevin March 15, 2012 12:45 pm

As long as one person keeps citing false incidents regarding factual people I personally know I will continue to post accordingly in response.

    Derek on 80,

Agree that the team needs more reliable perimeter shooters. The incoming Orel Lev is supposed to be a good shooter and the most likely guy to replace Zane. If Jace Tavita gets playing time, he was impressive and consistent in his shooting of 3-pointers during the Summer League. Still hoping that Gerry Blakes somehow finds his way to Manoa.

Another great opportunity tonight for the wahine to prove they are national contenders as they face the No1 team in D1A softballand.–the California Golden Bears.

The ladies from the left coast are a truly balanced team from head to toe.

Pitching or hitting, pick your poison, they are ranked #12 in ERA and are #2 in team BA @ .375.

They can go long (30 dinks) or play smallball–36/39 SBs.

Either way, they score and are ranked #6 in plate touches with a 8.14 per game average.

They can also defend and are #8 in fielding (.979).

Only one name is neccessary to explain their individual firepower–Valerie Arioto–my selection for NPOY. Arioto will be representing the USA in the 2012 Olympics as a frontline pitcher or hitter. Give her a glove or a bat or a ball in the circle and she can do it all–including the nose flute while dancing with wolves.

The wahine need to let it all hang-out, relax and have fun.

They were much too tight in the Texas game.

Statistically, Hawai’i matches well, except for base path speed, but, clutch hitting will tilt the game if we swing in the strikezone.

California mirrors Texas except the lady bears have more fence-busting power.

I believe our gurls had a bad case of choke-jitters on Tuesday.

    It was a big game.

Hawai’i is a legit team and coach Coolen would do well to have his wahine strike a locust pose to extricate all tension and cleanse the their mind.

Otherwise, when relaxed, they can beat any team on any day.

Dir of Player Personnel is the recruiting coordinator. I know Tony Tuioti started in this job. He logged all the DVD’s coming from hopefuls and hopeful’s coaches, arranged for coaches to review DVD’s, kept all coaches on the road in the loop with position needs recruits and recruits who signed, organized all recruiting visits, and kept NCAA contact requirements.

Dir of Football Operations is very similar to the CEO Admin Asst position in a business. All travel coordination, pre-game (hotel stay and meals), game day (pre-game meal coordination, sideline pass requests), Head coach post game interview requests, Head Coach’s calendar, budget reconciliation, spending requests, and reimbursements go through this office. All Asst Coach’s requests, approved by the Head Coach, goes through this office. Operation coordination with Facilities office and with Fiscal office is also part of this post

kifi…its true. i think this fine young man will thrive and survive no matter where he goes. at least we got to the door step. it’s a good sign for the program.

and who knows, if he redshirts this year and finds crawfish not to his liking he could be a rebounder we get plenty food to partake here.

  122. Numbers March 15, 2012 2:35 pm

They should only “retire” UH numbers if they went on to be successful in the NFL. Colt and Timmy failed hardcore in the NFL therefore their numbers should be usable for future UH alum.

  123. al March 15, 2012 2:37 pm

braddahkeems…i think another tsaiko knows you, too.

  124. al March 15, 2012 2:38 pm

touch n go on the retired jerseys of 14, 15. both made national news with their unreal stats back in the day, they managed to drag the university of hawaii with them. giving us much notice and facetime.

  125. al March 15, 2012 2:39 pm

those numbers have not been officially retired and who knows, maybe we could use those numbers to entice a 5 star qb.

    yes..Kifi…meannnnnnn!!!!

  131. hapahaoleboy March 15, 2012 2:59 pm

A pro career has nothing to do with retiring a college jersey number. It’s what you did while representing the jersey (in and out of the stadium) that determines whether it should be retired or not. I don’t know about Timmy, but Colt took UH to a place most people didn’t think was realistically possible, and he was a class act in the Hawaii community.

  132. kifi March 15, 2012 3:06 pm

Ahhhh. Me, I think Colt and Tim were both system quarterbacks.

    Go, Wahine!

    Beat Cal!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  140. Derek March 15, 2012 3:48 pm

You would think that one of at least 41 applicants could be a good basketball coach for our Wahine.

At this point, I could care less about the football player, FF. I would rather want the Wahine volleyball player, FF instead!!!

Gib Arnold should pound the pavement for good basketball players from Australia. Saw this kid from New Mexico today, a guard who I think is a freshman by the name of Gatewood. Good player, good shooter, heady player, was mentioned that he didn’t turn the ball over in more than 200 minutes or something like that. Quite impressive. We’ve got a recruit coming in by the name of Fotu but he’s from New Zealand. We need guards.

Yeah, I’m wondering about Gerry Blakes too!

The Portland Trailblazers made the 2 worst draft picks in NBA history. They selected Sam Bowie, center from Kentucky with the second pick in the draft after Hakeem Olajuwon when they could have gotten Michale Jordan. Several years ago, they selected Greg Oden, center from Ohio State with the first pick in the draft when they could have had Kevin Durant. Today, Portland waived Oden after numerous knee injuries and surgeries. The motto of the story is this. Unless centers are surefire players, go with the athletic player who is a scorer. Bowie and Oden were not big scorers in college or highly athletic. They were good, but they were not like David Robinson, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Olajuwon, Ewing etc. They were never college player of the year. Give me a good point guard or a shooting guard and I will be happy. I’ll take Magic Johnson, a point guard or Michael, a shooting guard or Kobe, a shooting guard before any other center, power forward, or small forward. But, Durant who is a small forward is changing my mind. Lebron? Heck, he could play all 5 positions he is so strong and athletic just like Magic. The difference is Magic has proven he is a champion. Lebron is still trying to prove it.

  166. oldtimer808 March 15, 2012 6:11 pm

#132 here we go again with that kukai about system quarterbacks. No matter what type of offense a team is running if the quarterback is average and that is all you will get. Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan did their jobs and each brought their talents when the team needed it the most. If it was a pro style offense I’m sure both of them would have excelled.

  167. oldtimer808 March 15, 2012 6:13 pm

Where is Mike Taylor going to #162?

  168. Derek March 15, 2012 6:13 pm

  170. slenzi March 15, 2012 6:27 pm

    #167 oldtimer808

One of the quotes I liked best about “system QB’s” came from JJ, “So by system QB you mean that we execute the same offense every week and throw 65% of the time? Then how come the other teams can’t stop it. The precise timing, the sharp execution, the film study, the knowledge of the offensive and defensive reads? If that makes you a system QB then you can label most of the successful QB’s in the NFL system QB’s.”

  171. mo808 March 15, 2012 6:43 pm

Mike Taylor teaches in the elementary school at Punahou. He was the basketball coach at Punahou for about 10-years and resigned last season to spend more time with the family – I think he has two kids at Punahou. No D-1 experience as far as I am aware but I doubt it.

  204. papajoe2 March 15, 2012 9:19 pm

You guys check out the Left On Base statistic. Cal had 17 or was it 13? Softbows had 3. More importantly we didn’t leave anyone on base in the 10th. SWWEEEEEEETT.

  205. Lanaiboy March 15, 2012 9:20 pm

Yes, the WAC softball blog is run by a Fresno State die-hard fan. However, when you want info on the Wahine games you have to turn to this blog. It describes game results minutes after they finished, unlike the Star-Avertiser and the UH web site. Sometimes the latter covers a game a day late. SA is soo slow in covering Wahine softball, even when the team plays the number 1/2 team in the country. Too bad.

  206. jm2375 March 15, 2012 9:22 pm

    Howzit Tsaikos!

Some things really don’t change. I was posting the 4 year glimpses into the blog past last year, so have today 5 years ago handy…kinda relates to what I posted earlier today. Here’s a 5th anniversary glimpse…

On this day (March 15) in the first full year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog … a consistently high 256 comments on another “no schedule/HF” day and no night shift. Long Time UH Fan was MIA and the las vegas showroom was dark. ST shares this at the top of his blog entry for the day…

Posted on: March 15, 2007 at 9:10:20 am

    Cheers

About 25 UH football players attended yesterday’s softball doubleheader, cheering on the nationally ranked Rainbow Wahine.

Quarterback Inoke Funaki, who organized the outing, brought a drum. The players held signs for each UH player, sang and yelled out original cheers.

Afterward, Colt Brennan asked shortstop Valana Manuma to autograph his throwing arm.

A stunned Manuma said: “Are you kidding?”

Brennan responded: “I really want it. Your team works really hard. We appreciate that.”

    She signed.

Final wrap up of yesterday’s Cattle Call day had homey jumping in from the sidelines with a 12 comments (up from 0-3 per day). Similarly, the shy prideperiod logged a high 14 comments. James (a.k.a. (J) James), hurtin’ from missing the Cattle Call due to work, checked in with 29 comments edging out gig-hawaii’s 27 comments. Together they accounted for 32% of comments.

DPK. Couldn’t make it yesterday. But I’m certainly looking forward to the next one. Think that I could have given big al a run for his money.

I would have given anything to see the look on the owners face when she saw me walking in.

One last rant: While I’m not pleased with the scheduling delays, I do not endorse firing anyone.

Maybe I’m getting soft in my old age, but I don’t like to mess with other people’s livelihood. People are people, and everyone is worthy of some compassion. That’s why it was upsetting when Riley was fired, and that’s why I don’t want that to happen to anyone else, even the athletic director.

I’ll be the wahine in a long muu — just so you all will know where to congregate as a Tsaiko bunch. So far, 4 have signed up for spring practice on 4/21. Any others interested?

My first post today and final comments on yesterday’s Camellia lunch: No more weekday Tsai-ko buffets for me if I gotta work the next day. But I’m off next week…

Remember all those days on the blog with Da Punchbowl Kid trying to get at Al’s food? Consider this…

    1. Al, da Kid and I are sharing the same cooking grill.

    2. Al and Kid are cooking mostly the same stuff.

    3. Al’s got the fastest pair of chopsticks I’ve ever seen.

    4. The Kid looks up from the grill when he speaks.

    – – – – – – – –

When going to get our first round of food, an oriental couple about 5′ tall looked at me nervously and dashed in front of me. I was thought that was rude until I saw them snatch some kal bi that bulla missed, turn their bodies and gingerly escape through the small opening between bulla and the Kid. Al and bulla were along the meat line and Kid was standing behind Wreckineyez for the veggies. When I went in behind the kid, the entrance was totally blocked and there was still Addahknowjoe behind me. Then I realized the couple didn’t want to trapped among us. The entry was blocked for a while 😉

    SteveM,

your recollection is accurate, i didn’t want to be trapped by you guys either….Al, is nothing short of a culinary marvel, the way he can use those chop sticks…..shoot, he looked like the drummer for jimi hendrix the way he was twirling. Kid did a good job, never saw someone eat so efficiently with one chopstick clenched in each paw….i mean fin….i mean hand. joe was very polite, but i think when i wasn’t looking he grabbed some of Eyez’ food, but i won’t tell. you know Eyez, he’s the distinguished dapper don when he is with us, telling us that he has to dress like that for work, ha, i saw him lurking in the shadows by Tiffany waiting for unsuspecting tourist women…with his looks and those locks……whew, i’d run too.

it was a fun time, made for one supah nap for me, haha, but i hadn’t slept since the day before, so it was all good.

g’night boys and girls, i’ll check on you in the morning.

    SteveM,

Wait until Prideperiod joins us next time. BTW everybody, SteveM took written notes during lunch. 🙂

kid, stevem said that he was taking down your words so that one day he’ll quote you given the right circumstances.

and you know you were going for it. [I never said that–but I guess it came true] 🙄

    03/15/07 @ 23:03

The Warrior Beat blog will continue to ascend in the coming weeks before the blogship hits the first crisis. It was scary and we took casualities. I might not post those days nightly. But the saying, “What doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger” has some truth… we’re still around. 🙂

  214. oldtimer808 March 15, 2012 9:56 pm

ok I got it Mike Taylor applied for the Wahine coaching job

  215. d1shima March 15, 2012 10:05 pm

Rockin’ it in the Quarry tonight!

    SoftB 🙂 ws!

    BaseB 🙂 ws!

  216. kruzen March 15, 2012 10:21 pm

big big big win by Na Wahine!

  217. Steve March 15, 2012 10:29 pm

Softbows are just AWESOME, Great Win!!!! This is a very special team, Coach Coolen has put together. Going make reservations for Oklahoma City, so I can see them win the National Championship.

  218. Slugger March 15, 2012 10:53 pm

WOW!!! What a game. I’m recording the replay. Gotta go to bed… GO WAHINE!!!

GO BASEBOWS! Even though they beat my alma mater…

    Night all!

  219. Steve March 15, 2012 11:24 pm

To put the Wahine Softball Team win in perspective. Not only did they beat 1/2 California, they beat last year’s Pac12 pitcher of the year and National Team pitcher. Also, Stephanie Ricketts shutdown the NCAA’s best hitting team.

People need to come out and watch this outstanding team play. Also, see 2 of the nations best pitchers do their magic in the pitching circle.

  220. krump1_AKA_protector March 15, 2012 11:26 pm

Just a great night to be in the Quarry regardless of which ‘diamond’ venue you chose to be at!

Actually had planned to walk over to the Les after the Wahine clinched their win, but you know what went down.

  221. tommui March 15, 2012 11:30 pm

Oldtimer #216, 21e 8 I don’t know whether Mike Taylor applied or not fot the WBB job. Was just answering the question who he was!

Of course he would be in a good position to know the local players – but that does not necessarily mean he has Mainland contacts.

And yep, forgot the wild throw that allowed the first run. But it was exciting – don’t know if I am going to stay up all night to watch the 10th inning. It is almost the witching hour and the replay is only in the third inning!

    GO WAHINE! Beat A&M

  222. kruzen March 15, 2012 11:38 pm

    way to go basebows!

  223. al March 15, 2012 11:43 pm

mike taylor is certainly a great high school coach. no doubt about it.

however, he does lack college experience.

mike taylor is a great recruiter, at the private high school level.

however, he does lack college experiences.

now, dana’s downfall was the mere fact that she couldn’t successfully recruit at the collegiate level. having never had that kind of prior experience.

to paraphrase, like tony sellito said on the leahey and leahey show you can be a great coach and teacher of the game. but, if you don’t got talent you are not going to win and its all about the winning.

  224. al March 15, 2012 11:49 pm

jessica iwata has what it takes that separates good players from great players.

she shrugged off a mental error on the field (by playing too deep with a runner on third and less than two outs) during the top of the inning allowing the go ahead run to score and came back with that walkoff homer to put that game to bed.

she delivers so often in the clutch during her two and a half seasons that each she comes up during a clutch up moment you could sense the anticipation building. she has what tyleen tausaga had a few years ago. i think that leisha li’ili’i will be another.

  225. al March 16, 2012 12:15 am

thinkin aloud…what if lsu did not jump in to the picture so late?

  226. Kevin March 16, 2012 12:25 am

Stephanie Ricketts was a machine tonight. If you saw the game no explaination needed.

She retired 12 from the offensive powerhouse.

Kayla Wartner called a dominating game as well.

  227. huh? March 16, 2012 12:31 am

You do mean 12 k’s, strikeouts that is, right?

In baseball/softball jargon to retire a batter is to get him/her out by strikeout, groundout, flyout, etc.

  228. BigHiloFan2 March 16, 2012 1:52 am

wow. Hawaii SOFTBOWS are MEEEANNN ! ! !

good thing Iwata neva go Cal, Stanford, eksettra cuz Coolen no experience, Hawaii lack facilities. 😆

    fotflmao!

  241. Kekoa March 16, 2012 5:19 am

    Happy Aloha Friday!

Still basking in the afterglow of the twin victories posted last night. High fives to both UH teams for their determination.

True Grit play of the night was turned in by our WSB left fielder, Aguirre. When she sacrificed her body by crashing into the corner in a futile attempt to snag a foul ball…that was Major League!

Taking the swagger away from the losing Bad News Bears pitcher was a Kick A$$ Moment! Watching her wipe the over-confident smirk she had worn after every inning and replace it with a stunned expression was oh so S-W-E-E-T!

Wear that win with pride Ladies. It was so well deserved.

  242. d1shima March 16, 2012 5:53 am

    Great Morning All!

Fans can revel in the delight for the rest of the day.

SoftBows and BaseBows gotta get set to hana hou!

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Have a great Aloha Friday and a safe and enjoyable weekend!

  244. d1shima March 16, 2012 6:01 am

    …speaking of getting set.

Listened to Don Robbs gushing in anticipation of tonight’s Don starter, Kyle Zimmer thruout last night’s game while watching their opening night starter, Alex Balog, K 8 out of 9 in the BaseBows’ line-up (one twice and 1 thrice!) If Jarrett Arakawa is in his groove it should be great!

  245. jm2375 March 16, 2012 6:12 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Again, congrats to the Wahine and BaseBows!

    GO WARRIORS!

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

  253. d1shima March 16, 2012 7:38 am

Wow! I doubt the Blog Host would appreciate this kind of reception at Hawaii’s Pro Day.

were required to remain behind a rope along the sideline. This, of course, made it extremely difficult to time anything ourselves.

Not being able to adequately view or time workouts is bad enough. But the real problems began after the workouts ended because media were not allowed to venture past the rope to seek interviews from players standing 30 to 50 yards away on the field.

    Hey Slugger!

Did the SofBows put a little more ‘bounce’ in your step? I’ll just bet they did! I hope they continue forward playing each game with the same resolve they’ve had from the beginning of the season.

Can’t forget the BaseBows either. The guys are really into it this year. I like the way the younger players are stepping up.

As Homey would say, “Go Tim Go!”
