Step up

Defensive coordinator Kevin Clune proved to be prophetic when he said the Rainbow Warriors would improve noticeably between the first and second practices of spring training.

“We did take a step forward,” Clune said. “We’re on about step 2 of 150 right now. The guys are starting to ask the right questions. They’re starting to see the right things. It’s going to be a little bit of a process. Without the pads on, it’s not exactly real. But we did take a forward — not perfect, not perfect by any means — but we did take a step forward.”

Clune said players will review videos of yesterday’s practice as learning tools.

“Come Saturday, we’ll put the shoulder pads on and, you know, I hope to see another step forward,” Clune said. “We have to keep taking steps forward every day.”

Tomorrow’s practice, which begins at 10:30 a.m., will be the first in shells for the Warriors.

Here are five reasons to attend tonight’s volleyball match between BYU and Hawaii:

1. It’s not televised.

2. It’s the penultimate home match for seniors Johann Timmer, Nick West, Jace Olsen, Joby Ramos and Aniefre Etim-Thomas.

3. UH is in the hunt for one of eight MPSF playoff berths. The Rainbow Warriors currently are in ninth place with four regular-season matches remaining.

4. BYU outside hitter Taylor Sander, who is 6-4, possesses a 43-inch vertical jump, and can touch the clouds. He averages 4.7 kills per set. His 1,613 career kills are a BYU rally-scoring record. He had nine aces against UC San Diego in a match in January.

Wie finishes with a 71 today, currently at -6 tied for 2nd, but many of the leading golfers still out on the course or didn’t tee off yet. Forecast for winds to pick up to 25mph in the afternoon.

  23. jeezy33 April 4, 2014 9:56 am

Some way too early recruiting news… But its good…

I don’t really pay attention to Rivals or Scout rankings because neither have watched live games in Hawaii but the best player in the state is Solomon Matautia from Campbell. Canton is hurt too much so its hard to know how good he is when he’s hardly playing. Hawaii leads Boise and Oregon St. currently for Matautia. He’s a coaches dream on defense though. Can hit, cover, rush the QB, and do it all. He’ll be playing on Sunday’s. Hope Clune can work his magic to get him to stay home.

  24. kaimiloa April 4, 2014 10:09 am

23… Does one of those sites tell you that Hawaii is ahead or do you have other sources?

  25. jm2375 April 4, 2014 10:15 am

jtl – it’s gonna be a long 6 mos till the next TWD season. At least there’s GoT and other series to fill the void.

  26. Turfwar April 4, 2014 10:19 am

After watching Matautia return punts and kickoffs I can’t help but wonder if this guy isn’t the best running back in the state. Amazing instincts and great feet with terrific acceleration. But have to agree and I too would place him at the very top of an outstanding class of 2015. Two years ago he was a 5’9″ soph at Waipahu. And if you look at video or pictures of him in a Waipahu uniform he really does look around 5’9″. Today he looks every bit the 6′ plus 200 pound range. He may still be getting taller.

  29. jeezy33 April 4, 2014 10:33 am

its a interview so i trust the source. just don’t trust their ability to rank Hawaii guys based on 7 on 7 off season tournaments or camps… but I expect he’ll jump up the ranks anyway. he’s that good. Few years back George Kawalu was a stud too. Too bad grades got in his way.

  30. kaimiloa April 4, 2014 10:35 am

Thanks. I didn’t doubt you. I just don’t usually read the stories since I don’t pay for the site.

  31. jeezy33 April 4, 2014 10:47 am

    30. Its good news to have early offers like OSU and Boise and have Hawaii 1. Usually, its Hawaii on top until poachers like OSU come in late..

  32. jimmy the lock April 4, 2014 11:54 am

Stupid joke Friday, just for boola!

A lawyer parks his Audi on the street and opens the door when all of a sudden a Police cruiser comes whizzing by and rips off the car door. The lawyer comes out screaming, “My Audi, my Audi, you dummy!” The policeman says, “You’re the dummy, you didn’t even realize your arm got torn off!” The Lawyer yells, “My Rolex, my Rolex…”

TGIF, have a great Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy the ride.

  38. RainbowCliff April 4, 2014 2:21 pm

Good afternoon Tsaiko Nation, had a FABULOUS day recruiting for upper campus. My ALOHA journey took me to Los Angeles High School West Gym in which 1,600 students attend this tradtional old high school that has a HUGE campus with a football stadium that takes up 5 blocks and then some. Nick name the Romans as I walked this large campus to the gym in which my table was right in front of me as my rivals both USC and UCLA tables “in the back” were they rightfully belong as my set up was quick and decisive anticipating the students arrival.

From 9am I started with 200 interest cards by the time I finished I only had 3 remaining. Yes, good folks 197 LA High School students came through my table as my enthusiasm for UH was taken by ALL as pamphlets, brochures and ALL my pens GONE !

On this GREAT day 15 Varsity football players as well as 10 basketball players filled out interest cards with ONE BIG linebacker a sophomore who is starting middle for the Romans 4-3 defense. Astute and has a FIERCE look as when he approached my table several of the students got out of the way and commented “psycho is coming” as I knew right there and them I’m definetly going to sign this stud as he gently filled out all his information.

Mahalo to the banners I received from the Warrior Beat as it REALLY made an impression with all my aloha and detail information to attend the University Of Hawaii, “simply the best, better then all the rest” !

Last week of April I will be at Santa Monica High School, Palos Verdes and Rolling Hills Estates. The goal is to reach ONE THOUSAND interest cards as I am 803 cards away !

    IMUA WARRIORS !

  39. Da Punchbowl Kid April 4, 2014 2:22 pm

    Jeezy, Turfwar –

I’ve seen Matautia play live a couple times this year. Have to agree that he’s an elite player and would be a nice catch for the Warriors. They guy got things done, wherever they had him playing.

  40. Gsky April 4, 2014 2:23 pm

Miano to be DC at Saint Louis HS?

    36. Should have clarified… Best defensive player… Ulu Perry is by far the best O linemen and I don’t think its close.

  50. WarriorMojo April 4, 2014 4:26 pm

Julian Gener tweeted that he got a medical hardship for last season so he’ll have two more seasons to play. He was damn impressive in those two or three games last year, I thought, so this is great news.

  51. whitey April 4, 2014 5:06 pm

WM, truly great news about Gener. i second that.

  52. gobows April 4, 2014 5:41 pm

no coincidence that the defense sucked without him. and the first 3 games the offense didn’t show up.
