Staying put?

It’s still early, of course, and there are a lot of factors that still could come into play, but as of now, cornerback/returner Mike Edwards is leaning toward returning for his senior season in 2013.

“It might be the best thing, not only for me but for my family,” Edwards said.

Edwards, who has two sons, said he would like to earn a bachelor’s degree. He also said he could benefit from another college season.

Edwards will not make a final decision until after he receives a draft-prediction assessment from an NFL panel.

While there is optimism that Sean Schroeder will be ready for Saturday’s game, he did not practice yesterday because of a back ailment. Jeremy Higgins took all of the first-team reps. Cayman Shutter took the other QB reps.

The funniest thing with all of the conference shifting and big TV contracts is, while it will be healthy for the bank accounts, it won’t necessarily improve viewership.

There can never be an all-star conference because somebody has to be at the bottom. Look at the Avengers. Not everyone can be Thor. Somebody has to be the Black Widow.

Also , what makes sports compelling is the unscripted drama. There’s going to be some great story — an orphan quarterback who has to support three siblings; a running back who was home-schooled — that will capture viewers. You can’t force spontaneity.

Mike can up his draft stock if he stays one more year. Then again, he’s been pretty spectacular on kick returns and consistent on defense.

Is Craig Stutzmann a coach at Weber? I forget. Their season must be pau if he is back home.

  13. Shoko November 28, 2012 8:24 am

Add Florida Atlantic to Middle Tennessee joining CUSA to replace ECU and Tulane, which are headed to the Big East. Its somewhat ironic that Karl Benson left the WAC to join the Sun Belt only to be faced with schools leaving his conference, once again. That would lave the Sun Belt with 8 teams, with UTSA joining next year to make it 9 teams total.

  14. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2012 8:25 am

Stutzmann is a coach at Weber State.

Suppose you’re looking for someone at the mall. You go to Macy’s, the other person already left Macy’s and went to the food court.

The best strategy is to just stay in one place and let the other person find you.

I think that’s the Mountain West’s strategy in this conference realignment.

  17. (Jesse) James November 28, 2012 8:30 am

  19. Shoko November 28, 2012 8:34 am

Surprised there has been no mention of the Big East looking toward the Mountain West for teams to replace the ones that are leaving.

  20. BigWave96744 November 28, 2012 8:36 am

Stephen, as far as this weekend goes, I don’t expect to see Darius Bright during the Seniorwalk because he quit the team ( just like Terrence Bell a few years back). But do you know if Siaki Cravens will be honored since he is still on the active roster.

Also do you know if Kawika Ornellas will suit up? He is the only Senior, besides Cravens to not appear in any games. Kawiks is a great guy and I hope he gets some PT in his last game.

  21. Shoko November 28, 2012 8:39 am

With Rutgers and Louisville leaving, the conference format would look like this.

West: Boise State, San Diego State, Houston, SMU, Tulane, Memphis

East: Connecticut, Cincinnati, South Florida, Central Florida, East Carolina, Temple

Navy joins in 2015 with another team that is still to be addressed.

  22. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2012 8:41 am

    Ornellas will suit up.

UH also has invited Brandon Leslie and Levi Legay to be part of the ceremonies.

By the way, it’s really difficult to get a line on the actual number of seniors. UH media relations first announced 14. But they forgot Kyle Niiro. So then it was 15. And then they said, wait, add Hunter Hollowed to the list. So I hunted him down (hey, I made a pun!), got comments, etc., etc., etc.

Then yesterday I bragged to media relations how I got Hollowed. And they said, Oh, he’s not a senior.

    Welcome to my world.

  23. WarriorMojo November 28, 2012 8:42 am

Gonna have to agree with AGrease and Kekoa from yesterday’s blog re Teo. Don’t know the guy at all, but every once in awhile I see something that makes me wonder how much of his image is real and how much is just manufactured.

He is clearly very media savvy or is getting advice from someone who is, but I remember some questionable/dirty stuff he did on the field in high school, his alleged recruiting indulgences on his campus visits, his nasty comments about Mack and Pete Carrol, when neither guy was able to defend himself. In fact just last year he made those controversial Twitter remarks about Coach Kelley, implying that he didn’t support the coach and was only playing for himself and his boys.

Just not buying the Manti Teo as the gridiron version of a cure for cancer just yet.

  24. Stephen Tsai November 28, 2012 8:44 am

By the way, I love how the thinking is Rutgers carries the N.Y. metropolitan area market.

    Uh, no, it doesn’t.

Just like SMU doesn’t carry the Dallas market, or San Jose State doesn’t carry the Bay Area market.

Kaepernick to start again. I trust Harbaugh’s decision.

If Edwards come back he can work on his degree and he will be playing football next year. If he tries pro ball, he might not be playing football next year , unless arena league or Canadian. Tough decision for him.

IIRC, did not Teo indulge in alcholoic beverage with a former Kahuku player on his recruiting visit to BYU?

I don’t know if he is qualified to be a Heisman candidate, but unlike Colt Brennan who played for UH, it does not really matter to me.

Can someone clarify comments on call the coach about not renewing scholarships?

Coach Chris said we only have 13 to offer. That sounds like a problem.

He also said that the program can’t take away a scholarship based on athletic ability.

Curran disagrees with that stating the NCAA allows for a program to take away a scholarship based on not making athletic progress.

    Who is right here?

  54. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 28, 2012 11:11 am

I am looking for the YouTube clip where Lane Kiffin responded to a reporter about a player whose scholarship was NOT renewed.

His response was that these scholarships are a one year deal and USC can take it away.

No, a coach cannot cancel or reduce an athlete’s scholarship during the season for an athletic reason. According to Bylaw 15.3.4.3, an athletic scholarship may not be reduced or canceled during the period of its award:

    (a) On the basis of a student-athlete’s athletics ability, performance or contribution to a team’s success;

    (b) Because of an injury, illness, or physical or mental medical condition (except as permitted pursuant to Bylaw 15.3.4.2 [see below]); or

    (c) For any other athletics reason.

Under Bylaw 15.3.4.2, a coach or university may only cut an athlete’s scholarship during the school year if s/he:

    Becomes ineligible;

    Fraudulently misrepresents any information on a university document;

    Engages in serious misconduct; or

    Voluntarily withdraw from their team.

This is the story about Kiffin taking away the scholarship of a walk-on and giving it to a LB with previous drama.

Doesn’t sound like the walk-on did anything to warrant a non-renewal under those guidelines listed by madeinhawaii #58. Not sure if there is another rule somewhere?

  68. madeinhawaii November 28, 2012 11:39 am

    IWWHM…

The walk-on can probably file suit and the school has enough money to settle out of court. The kid will get 4-5 years worth of tuition + living expenses … that way, Kiffen gets another ‘scholie’ athlete?

  69. madeinhawaii November 28, 2012 11:41 am

    IWWTHM

Athletic scholarships are limited to 1 year by NCAA rule. If however, a university does not wish to renew or wishes to reduce a student-athlete’s athletic scholarship, certain rules must be adhered to. The university must notify the student-athlete in writing of the decision and must provide the opportunity for a hearing. In addition, the university must provide the student-athlete with all pertinent deadlines and procedures governing such hearings.

If a student-athlete does not receive written notification of the non-renewal or reduction of his or her scholarship and associated hearing procedures, he or she should request such information in a letter or email to a university representative.

Can’t believe how quickly some of these head coach-less schools are progressing with their coaching searches. Awesome.

    Day 1 – Fire.

Day 2 thru 5 – Send out feelers to coaches that you have had in mind for a year.

    Day 4 – 6 Interviews.

Day 8 or 9 – Hire new coach.

Day 10 (Morning) – New coach starts recruiting.

Day 10 (Noon) – New coach meets team.

Day 10 (Afternoon) – New coach introduced to public.

Day 12 – New staff introduced by new head coach.

Day 14 – Winter Conditioning begins

Day 15 – New coach stars preparation with old team for bowl game.

Day 16 – New Assoc. Head Coach, not as nice, a little bit nasty takes over winter conditioning. Players all feeling a little bit uncomfortable. Dial has turned up tremendously. A little bit more intense, a litttle bit more difficult than used to.

Day 17 – “Oh boy, can’t wait to go home for Christmas.”

#77. Johnny Football is the perfect name for a Heisman candidate, a QB to boot. The odds are stacked against Te’o.

I can hear Nick Saban saying, “we haven’t lost to a team in two years. We got beat by Cam Newton and Johnny Football.”

Te’o’s best chance of winning is if the voters use the same rationale many did when Mark Ingram from Alabama won — give it to the best player on the #1 ranked team.

  79. duh! November 28, 2012 1:17 pm

  80. Otto November 28, 2012 1:26 pm

Rutgers wants to catch the NY metro area’s attention, but I don’t know. Rutgers is actually in NJ. NY State has smaller State University of New York (SUNY) schools scattered across the state. They don’t have one big school to capture all the athletes. For a long time, the big NY football school was Syracuse, but ever since Donovan McNabb they haven’t really been relevant. Rutgers is trying to fill the void….

  86. madeinhawaii November 28, 2012 2:25 pm

Only 13 or so are graduating this year that will leave behind their scholarships. That probably also means that the Warriors already have 85 scholarship players on their roster, so they can only offer scholies equal to the number of graduating seniors…unless..

some of the existing scholarships are not renewed for another year…

The other alternative is a medical retirement.

————————————————————————————-Perfect example of crabs in the bucket pulling down a local brother who is shining on the national scene. You three should be ashamed of yourselves.

“Ashamed?” Why? For stating my opinion? For not buying into the hype? For refusing to put Manti on a pedestal?

He’s a very good football player with as many human flaws as anyone else, despite what his hype machine would have you believe.

I’m just not ready to worship at the house of Saint Manti yet. You go on without me.

“Pulling down a local brother”, pft. THAT says a lot about where you’re coming from.

As I read your postings, scholarships are only good for one year (unless renewed) and cannot be revoked except for certain reasons.

But if the school is not going to renew his scholarship, he must be given a hearing – question: what kind of defense can he/she give to prevent a revocation of that scholarship?

    No, this is not spam.

Please consider visiting http://www.adoptaussoldier.org and signing up to either adopt a soldier or a unit. If you adopt a soldier it is a long term commitment for the entire length of his or her deployment. If you adopt a unit it could be a short term commitment – a one and done – just send some of the things they request.

The site gives examples of the type of box to use.

I adopted a unit for my students. They are working to gather many of the items requested with the goal of making me pay the postage for over 20 boxes — a small price to pay to thank our soldiers for our continued freedoms!

    Go Warriors of all branches!!!

  103. PurpleMaple November 28, 2012 5:02 pm

So basically the recruiting effort for Hawaii is almost over as they have eleven verbal commitments to date for 2013. That means they won’t be getting a bunch more offensive linemen recruits beyond Wa’a’s verbal. Or, they could drop, not renew, several existing players’ scholarships. This will be interesting. Graves and Tachibana already informed? Wow.

  104. 3-Prong November 28, 2012 5:02 pm

It is the coaches job to use scholarships to put the best kids in green uniforms that year, that give the team the best chance to win. When new kids come in they themselves may have caused another individual to lose a scholarship or a place on the roster. As the talent pool improves, less talented players or players that don’t give value to the team fall off. Thats how it works gang. Do good hard working kids lose spot? Unfortunately yes sometimes, but it is no different than any other Div1 program. Good coaches assist those kids in finding schools that will allow them to have success and get a good education. It may sound cold but its just a business decision.

  105. cincodemayonnaisse November 28, 2012 5:09 pm

If guys can’t provide proof….WITH two sides of a story. IMO DON’T POST.

    Be responsible.

To post “I heard this” or “I heard that” is nothing more than slander. Players get let go every year, sad but true. Lest we forget…..every coach from Tomey to JJ didn’t ask players back. Ask the QB’s at SMU how that works out when they got a Texas transfer…

What about Austin?….Mo wouldn’t have had his shot if not….Malcolm Lane?…..and the list goes on.

If you’re gonna throw out the “wolf in sheep’s clothing” accusation. Throw up some examples that can be followed up with and verified. After all….we do have the most informed behind the scenes guy ready to do his job right here monitoring his blog…

Go ahead….list some truths so we can blow this thing wide open. Just not asking a player back that doesn’t fit into future plans does not constitute wrong doing. If we got a coach locking players in dark closets for a day or two we need to know.

If not keep it to yourself and take the gossip to Aunty Marialani’s porch where it belongs.

Interesting, I thought #15 (Brennan’s old #) would have a higher auction price… $210 seems cheap for game worn jersey.

#1 (game worn) is doing well. As it should… The #1 jersey has had several pro players, or soon to be, in the past 11 years: Travis Laboy (2001-3), Grice-Mullen (2005-7), Greg Salas (2008-10), Mike Edwards (2011-present) have all worn #1. Only Mike Bass (2001-4) didn’t make it in pro ball after wearing #1.

    .

    .

    .

Best value on the Wounded Warrior Jersey auction board: Pisa Tinoisamoa’s old #10 is only $120 now.

    2nd Best Value: Jeff Ulbrich’s old #44 ($110 & $280 for game worn)

How is there no #14 for auction (Timmy Chang’s old #)???

  110. Former UH Athlete November 28, 2012 6:04 pm

Any time there’s a new coach… there’s going to be roster turnover and attrition. Players 80% of this year’s roster were Mack’s recruits and every time there’s a new coach, there’s always going to be players that don’t get along with the new guy.

From the effort these guys are giving on the field, it looks like Chow did a good job of not losing the locker room. Look at what happened at Colorado, So Miss, and Arkansas… Those teams completely quit on their coaching staffs. Mike Leach had major issues with the upperclassmen he inherited at WSU and subsequently 19 players were booted or quit from the roster.

New coaching staffs taking over marginal or bad programs can’t waste scholarships on players not committed to improving the team. Coaches need as many scholarships to get the players who buy into what they are selling.

UH was out manned, but never out hustled. UH’s problems were talent and injury related, there was never any question in effort and mental toughness.

  111. Former UH Athlete November 28, 2012 6:04 pm

On the recruiting front, Chow’s doing a good job. I see several nice commitments and there appears to be emphasis on DLine recruiting, which was the biggest weakness in the team. Chow’s already made a splash with local recruits and Tulimasealii is a huge commitment. ST reported that 4 Kahuku players have offers from UH. If Chow can get the captain/leader to commit, I believe the others will follow. Chow has also opened up Utah for recruiting, which is an area where UH never had a major presence before. Also, Chow has better access to LDS players than Mack or JJ.

UH is unlikely to keep many of the best local recruits because of the evolution of the internet and social media. Schools and recruits now have the ability to see each other much easier than ever before. From the comfort of his office chair, Nick Saban can go on his computer and see film of every good Hawaii recruit through google/youtube.

Geographic recruiting boundaries aren’t as restrictive as in the past… which helps UH more than it hurts. UH will lose more players to the mainland, but UH can reach far more mainland recruits than in the past.

    By Stephen Tsai

Look at the Avengers. Not everyone can be Thor. Somebody has to be the Black Widow.

Hey, now. Well, the comic book version of Black Widow is equipped (Lord-ah mercy is she equipped. Oh! Um) with a wrist weapon that fires projectiles; this ordnance is known as the Widow’s Bite.

Say, if Odin needed to take down Odinson and said Father, somehow, had only The Black Widow by his side top help dispatch the God of Thunder, the sky-father of Asgard could easily enchant Natalia [Natasha] Allanovna Romanova’s specialized weapons (one on each wrist[!]) with the express goal of defeating a Thor.

That all having been said, um, between the two, uh, a Grease would rather be Thor. For obvious reasons.

Nerdness rules. Everything else is just panic. 😉

    THANK YOU!!!

The things that happen in college football today is all due to the demand. Been saying the same thing for years now…

From the NFL holdouts and striking unions to college football head coaches losing their jobs etc.. The football landscape and business practices are all in reaction due to the demand set forth by the FANS.

I am guilty as much as anyone else that wants to see progress.

Football is the big money maker and it has to succeed. I also support other sports but I know its football that has to make the money and there is pressure to make that money via wins.

Those are the rules, so accept them for what we all have had a hand in.

Nice article by ST on Blake Muir in today’s paper.

BUT the 20 pound weight loss since the season started….with the corresponding loss of explosive strength….is a classic example of the overtraining methods being administered.

BTW while Wiesehan thought that he was being amusing to BC and the audience on last night’s Call The Coach Show, JMHO that some of his comments were unnecessary…..about some of the current OL players…..like saying that Blake didn’t know how to get into a 3-point stance when he first got to coach him…..especially when it’s not true.

Why do some of you always sound like you want to scrap? I go back and read some of the posts, and it is ridiculous how sensitive some people are.

The Manti thing. Some like him, some don’t. Who cares? It sure has seemed to ruffle some people’s feathers. I think he deserves to win the Heisman. That doesn’t make him my hero.

I think some get so pissed at local kids for not staying home to play for UH, that they completely write them off as bad seeds and assume everything they do is for the hype. Hey, maybe there were some things that happened to taint Manti’s character, but I have never heard about them. And if that’s the case, they must not be important enough to matter.

If he wins, I will be proud of him as son of Hawaii. If he doesn’t, so be it.

And by the way, he may not be my hero, and he may not be yours, but if you have read anything about some of the good he’s done, I’m sure there are some kids out there that consider him their hero. And none of us can find any harm or wrong in that.

what do you when you try to help said scholie athlete by having him be productive on the scout team so he can remain an a native member of the team only to have to encounter one distraction after another?

what do you do when a scholie athlete then does not show up for practice? okay, a whole week of practice?

At the luncheon on 10/15, Demarest stated they are expecting to have available scholarships in the high teens 17,18,19.

Things may have changed since then but at the time he seemed quite confidant with that number.

    102. wafan — thanks to you and your students for supporting active-duty service people!!! If they really are looking at filling 20 boxes, here are some USPS shipping hints from our donation drives for Operation Paperback.

First, get the largest size flat-rate boxes because the cost per cubic inch is lower. Second, try for an APO or FPO recipient address — this keeps costs down and you can use the domestic maximum weights, not the international rates, which are lower. Third, sign up for an account at USPS dot com and print out your mailing labels there. You will save at least 15 percent, which means the savings will pay for shipping another box or two; and you will get free delivery confirmation. Even more OT, people who support Operation Paperback or similar drives, like the school shoeboxes, check into the “forever” stamps for flat-rate boxes. I haven’t seen this postage but if you can afford to buy the stamps now, you will save money mailing next year. 🙂

it still amazes me that people think chow is doing things to hurt players.

people who are educators, and a coach is an educator, tend to start everyone with an A. Whether or not a person keeps that A is entirely up to them.

the thing is, with change comes people who resist, and people who assist.

    go warriors.

    Wafan ~

In every conflict that our military has been thrown into, the mail channels always included personal contributions from patriots like you. I wish you could see what it’s like on the receiving end. The long term effect of strangers sending simple necessities to fellow Americans is really something to behold.

My Pops/Myself/My Son/My Daughter ~ We all thank you for what you are doing during the holiday season as grateful recipients of such bounty during the dark days of our individual past conflicts.

I’m looking forward to your return for your annual summer break from the Pacific Northwest. We can hang out at Warrior practice sessions, cattle calls, and karaoke sessions. (We were lucky enuff to attend the Warrior practice at Hickam this summer!)…The USC game is a possibility for you next trip because I do believe the early season opener will fit your return schedule.

Now if we could just get Chicken Grease to come harmonize with the Tsai-ko Tsingers…

    Greenthumb and Kekoa . . .

My kids and I have the easy job. Others had the tough jobs. I keep reminding my kids that we would be a lot worse off if not for the sacrifices of others. And that we have to continue to honor them as often as we can.

Interestingly, this year, some of the kids asked for more information to take home to their families and churches. I sure hope each of them will be able to help spread their aloha overseas.
