Stayin' alive: Temple, UH still talking

Word on the boulevard is the possibility of a 13th game this season is very much alive, with Temple willing to make considerable concessions.

If the game were to materialize, it likely would be played on Dec. 7 at Aloha Stadium, avoiding conflicts with the UH basketball team and a Pop Warner festival on Dec. 8.

Chancellor Tom Apple spoke to the team before today’s practice:

The Warriors were scheduled to depart this afternoon with a travel roster of 60 players — four below the Mountain West limit. Receiver Chris Gant, cornerback Tony Grimes and safeties Bubba Poueu-Luna and Leroy Lutu Jr. are among the ailing players who will not be traveling.

Heh. 13th game . . . The Game Who Cried Wolf.

Actually, a Grease is tellin’ ya — might very well be a school from East Coast area affected by Super Storm Sandy; said school might have to cancel home game in the next week or so. They gonna need an “additional game” themselves.

Hawaii might be able to pick and choose just WHICH university or college for their 13th game.

You heard it here, Greasetradamous, first. 🙂

Wonder why 4 roster spots couldn’t be filled with able bodies who could play and contribute something to the team. We are playing on the road, need all able bodies possible that can contribute. Oh well lets see what gets brought to the table against Fresno. Let’s hope the point spread doesn’t come to fruition like what seems to be the “norm” this year.

  13. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 1, 2012 10:20 am

Make Temple responsible for selling 10,000 tickets. It’ll be worth it at that point.

Even if we go 1-11 or 2-10 I think we could get most season ticket holders to come if they don’t charge extra for the game.

If STHs have to go out of their way to purchase tickets and parking etc I guess they could manage 1/2 to 2/3 the norm.

Anyone know why Temple is so interested in playing us? Kinda fishy.

    ST,

Truthfully….do you see things getting better for Warrior football from next year on out? Not to sound arrogant but it does seem like Chows offense does really nothing to opposing teams and his offense seems so predictable. What do you think?

  22. papajoe2 November 1, 2012 10:31 am

I think they should give the season ticket holders a discount on the Temple game maybe 1/2 price or even better (I don’t know what the various prices are) but, sorry, I don’t think UH can handle if its free. Same with ppv.

  23. A-House November 1, 2012 10:35 am

    weak mind observation:

Coah Chow must be humbled by the fact that his many previous stops in college he had very talented players in all positions and this contributed to many Heis QBs and AA players

now, he has mid-level or below talent and will struggle to get “W”s

I hope that he recognizes this and will adjust his overall philosophy to each game. Is there a special reason that coaches will “run up the middle” when on the 3-yd line – time after time after time.

Why do caoches shy away from faking a hand-off to the RB, QB hide the ball on side, and let the QB run in the opposite direction for many yards or even a TD? Is this a “trick” play? Not in my book is it is an integral part of the overall offensive scheme. so-called “trick” plays were coined by football sports casters to inflame the audience? me tinks so!!

  24. coocbean November 1, 2012 10:37 am

Chow has to find a way to get the ball into the end zone.

That’s the most disappointing thing to me. The inability to score TDs given Chow’s rep as an offensive genius. The D can get a pass because of injuries on the D line. But the offense has got to answer the other team’s O.

Up to this point in the season, we’ve shown we’re not a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. We’ve shown we’re a double amputee in an ass kicking contest.

Come on Coach, find a way.

  25. SteveM November 1, 2012 10:39 am

    RE: #13

IWWTHM — I think I saw that Temple is only playing 11 games this year and want another game to have a better shot at finishing at least 6-6 and going to a bowl game. If no bowl possibility, then a Hawaii trip is their “bowl”.

Hawaii has little to gain from scheduling them at this time… but… that being the case, they are doing Temple a big favor. Never know when me might need a favor from them some day. ST wrote that the players want to get on the field and play regardless. Makes sense…that’s why they are on the team. So for their sake, I do not oppose the game now.

  26. kev-1 November 1, 2012 10:43 am

If you don’t want to watch the game, then don’t watch. I for one will definitely be watching. Please make it happen. I can’t get enough of Warrior football. Of course, I want them winning, but that doesn’t affect my level of support.

  27. Stephen Tsai November 1, 2012 10:46 am

    Matty Boy:

It’s a really young team. It’ll get better.

I was amazed at how many fifth-year offensive linemen there were the past few seasons. This year, there is only one holdover upper-classman — Chauncy Winchester-Makainai.

  28. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 1, 2012 10:47 am

  30. kev-1 November 1, 2012 10:49 am

ST . . . just wondering your thoughts on traveling below the allowed player limit. Are there not enough players to fill, or is it just not that big a deal to take that many? I figure the more the merrier, right?

  31. lowtone123 November 1, 2012 10:51 am

  33. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 1, 2012 10:54 am

There was talk on this blog that we had enough talent this year to at least remain somewhat competitive. Especially the defense. Obviously that wasn’t the case. Maybe the system was too hard to implement this year. Injuries were a big negative as well.

Next year we will have experience, a better QB, and more of Chow’s recruits to execute.

Just play it. It would set a good precedent. It may not be completely to UH’s advantage this year, but it could pay off dividends in the future when the Bigger Conferences go into their playoff scheduling and we find ourselves short a game or two. Teams that probably won’t make it to a bowl game will then look to Hawaii for a 12th or 13th late season game.

  41. coocbean November 1, 2012 11:15 am

The team should be way better next year. This year it seems we just a receiving weapon or two short of openning things up. A good wideout, slot or TE would do wonders for the O. The pass catchers we got are utilitarian definitely not weapons.

The D is young with many guys learning to “swim” by being thrown into the deep end of the pool. Whoever survives will be a better player next year.

  46. mikey November 1, 2012 11:35 am

If Temple really want their 12th game then they should invite Hawaii to play at Temple and use our 13th game exception.

Then everybody wins. Temple get another win at home to qualify for a bowl game and UH Warriors have their bowl game in the Big East.

  47. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 1, 2012 11:36 am

I would rather Temple help us schedule some basketball with Big East schools.

  48. mikey November 1, 2012 11:37 am

  49. mikey November 1, 2012 11:38 am

  50. cocobean November 1, 2012 11:41 am

Damn what’s happening to my screen name.

Am very ambivalent about Temple. Chow has got to show he has the team moving in the right direction. This has been the most disappointing season in terms of competiveness especially at home.

Come on Coach teach your boys how to compete.

  51. HiFlyer November 1, 2012 11:46 am

    mikey

I don’t think we can travel to Temple as we already have 12 games scheduled, the Hawaii exemption is if a team wants to come here and we play a 13 game schedule which gives us 7 home games or something like this.

  52. Rodney November 1, 2012 11:49 am

    I’ll be at that game!

    Every chance to play

    and practice well make

    us a better team!!!!

  53. oldtimer808 November 1, 2012 11:54 am

There is nothing wrong in playing a 13th game. It will be good for the players in gaining much needed experience win or lose. I know it has been a frustrating season for the fans but can you imagine how the coaches and players feel with how things have gone. I have more empathy for the coaches and players than for the fans after all the young student/athletes are the ones who have sacrificed and put in all the work. So stop thinking of yourselves and support our team.

  54. Bowwar November 1, 2012 12:02 pm

Temple needs the extra game so they can get another victory and qualify for a bowl…It’s that plain and simple. Let them pay us to have the game since we ain’t gonna win anyway.

  55. Independent Thinker November 1, 2012 12:14 pm

    12. im sure they’re several hard working warriors chow could have found to fill those empty slots, maybe chow saving money for use in his recruiting budget instead of taking care of the players he has now? I’m sure they’re several players from the mainland who’s families would love to see their kids suited up, on the sidelines. too bad we traveling with empty slots.

  59. Chicken Grease November 1, 2012 12:26 pm

Pearl Harbor was an immensely terrific movie. Highly underrated.

  60. Derek November 1, 2012 12:35 pm

Some people are still dreaming. I like to trust my own eyes. Temple would beat UH by at least 14 points or more, in Honolulu. I watch a lot of college football since I’m retired.

Top to bottom, the Big East is better than the Mountain West, and Hawaii is the worst team in the Mountain West, this year, by far. Temple, on the other hand, is very competitive in the Big East.

  62. tommui November 1, 2012 12:50 pm

    GOOD DAY HAWAII!

If we treat the Temple game as if it were the Hawaii Bowl, the Hawaii Bowl is not part of the season ticket package.

When people paid for their “season” ticket, they knew what the season would be – namely, that the last game would be with So. Alabama.

I think that season ticket holders would recognize that – but I also think that they should get the ticket at a huge discount and get the seat that they had during the season.

As one who gets PPV – handicap you know – I can see paying for the extra game. It would be great if Oceanic only charged it as a discount for being a faithful PPVer!

But we are doing Temple a favor – let them pay their way over and pay us for the game! (We take the proceeds from the gate) OR as was suggested, it can be a home and home or they fix us up with a couple of BB games with others in the Big East.

  63. jimmy the lock November 1, 2012 12:58 pm

No need the game. Let the student part of the players study for their finals.

  64. jimmy the lock November 1, 2012 1:11 pm

Also, if the game were to come to fruition then it should not be treated as a Hawaii Bowl. It should be the 13th game of the season. The season ticket holders paid for a season which in reality are the home games.

Therefore, being that it will be a home game, its already paid for.

  65. PurpleMaple November 1, 2012 1:12 pm

Only 60 players – Hawaii saving money on a game they figure they cannot win. Coach Chow mentioned on “Call the Coach” show, how they are saving $65K by traveling by bus from the airport to Fresno, a three-four hour ride. He also talked about how solid Fresno is this year and that it will be a real challenge to beat them. Gotta pick your battles and playhing Fresno on the road is not one of them (if you had a choice). Well, not this year.

  66. HawaiiMongoose November 1, 2012 1:13 pm

I knew Gant was hurting, but Grimes? Added to the losses of Poueu-Luna and Lutu, that leaves the secondary really short-handed.

This has been an awful season in terms of injuries to defensive players… I can’t remember UH ever having so many.

  67. Shoko November 1, 2012 1:19 pm

Even if you’re bowl eligible, its doesn’t mean you’re going to get a bowl bid. Couple years ago, under Al Golden, Temple went 8-4 and didn’t get invited to a bowl. Western Kentucky went 8-4 last year, yet didn’t get to play a bowl game. So, I don’t think they’re worried about that extra game to be bowl eligible when there isn’t a guarantee. Just saying…

  68. Chicken Grease November 1, 2012 1:25 pm

    THE WARRIOR!!!

    THE OWL!!!!

game will end up being UH’s bowl. Would be played at Aloha Stadium, right?

And they will win. You will see Chow direct the type of plays that’ll make naysayers’ (yes, labelled; you KNOW who you are) doubletakes end up enough backlashes to have to leave the stadium or switch the channel.

THIS is the game where Chow states “what the hell you said about me?! Say again? And it’s not that I’m deaf; you think me being old is YOUR crutch, not mine.”

    # # #

  69. Bowwar November 1, 2012 1:28 pm

No reason for bringing less than 64 players on the road…I think that’s a slight for kids with families on the mainland and not wisely using ALL of your resources. If can’t afford to spend the money, then “stay-home”, concede the game, and save the money.

  70. kev-1 November 1, 2012 1:33 pm

the players want the game, then UH should try and make it happen. A lot of people forget who the games are really for.

  71. Janusz smyczynski November 1, 2012 1:35 pm

  73. papajoe2 November 1, 2012 1:40 pm

At this moment, Chad Owens is 14 yards away from THE record.

  74. Chee Hoo November 1, 2012 1:42 pm

    #72…..”Toting?” Chancellor fumbled it away!

  75. Shoko November 1, 2012 1:44 pm

For the sake of the players, especially the Seniors, I hope the Temple game is scheduled. But the reality against the game will always point to the dollar. Temple’s athletic budget is not much more than UH’s. So a big payout is unlikely in my opinion. Also, I’m not sure Temple travels well when you consider their home attendence is pretty low. Its a little higher this year because they’re in the BE, but when they were in the MAC they probably averaged about 25,000. Thats pretty small for a team that plays in a 60,000 capacity stadium.

  76. wafan November 1, 2012 1:55 pm

  78. madeinhawaii November 1, 2012 2:00 pm

When the Chancellor addressing the team is “news worthy” it just tells you that the Chancellor rarely or hasn’t addressed the team before … disconnect.

  79. Harold November 1, 2012 2:02 pm

    Mr. Tsai,

It’s not a “Pop Warner Festival,” its an Island Youth Football League games.

  80. cocobean November 1, 2012 2:03 pm

Kudos to all the upbeaters. You’re better men than me. Just never felt more disconnected to a team than this year. Partly due to how the team has played partly due to how the schedule panned out.

I’ve always supported whoever was the coach. Still support Chow. It’s just so hard to remain upbeat watching how we’ve played since the Reno game. Injuries mixed in with inexperience is a recipe for disaster.

To his credit Chow has been unwaivering in following his blue print. He has a vision (“we’ll chase championship”) of what we could be and is staying the course until he get’s it done.

  86. kev-1 November 1, 2012 2:18 pm

What does the chancellor need to address the team for? I don’t think that the fact this doesn’t happen often means that there is a disconnect. He’s not the AD and he’s not the coach. No disconnect there. Not necessarily news worthy either. Maybe ST just saw them walking and took a pic.

I understand that fans are frustrated, because I am one of them. But it seems that there is more effort by fans to try and create this disconnect between the school, the team, and the fans. I read it all the time. There is a new coach and the transition isn’t going as people expected. That’s it. This disconnect talk needs to stop in my opinion. Hooray! Chad Owens has set the Canadian Football record for all-purpose yards in a season, and the game is still not over yet – Hamilton vs. Toronto. Old mark was 3,840.

    kev-1,

If you don’t have greater hands on involvement from the Chancellor to the UH Pres in UH athletics, then we will never get to the “next level,” period.

Schools at the next level would fry their school admin for dissing or ignoring the Athletic Department.

  92. Kapahulu November 1, 2012 2:35 pm

I agree with PPJ2, if people want to avoid being stuck in traffic the next time a major Freeway accident happens (and there will be a next time), then VOTE FOR RAIL.

  96. kev-1 November 1, 2012 2:41 pm

    mih,

Okay, involvement yes, but do they need to really be addressing the team? Is that a common occurence at other schools? If it is, then I stand corrected. I know that Hinshaw was around more often, but I just assumed it was her personal interest in sports, not required.

It seems more like a thing where the players would be wondering “who’s dis guy?”

And again, just because he’s not in the locker room, it is assumed that he is dissing or ignoring, when in reality most of us on this board have no idea (unless you are one blessed with birdies).

The accident happened around 1:30 pm. By following the lack of progress on the radio traffic reports and also on the internet using the traffic camera website GO AKAMAI.COM

you could see that we were going to be stuck in major traffic for hours and hours to come. Too bad it happened on Halloween, which prevented a lot of parents from being with their kids. I am sure they will remember that for years to come.

I for one (and many of my co-workers) could have left our cars at work and taken the train home. The next morning we could take the train back to work and driven our car home after work. At least we would have had options!

  103. jimmy the lock November 1, 2012 3:02 pm

How rail going help me get to Waialua? I going get dropped off in Waipahu and then wait for bus that going take me to Waialua? Only problem, bus stuck in traffic.

  104. jimmy the lock November 1, 2012 3:08 pm

Another problem is if thousands of potential riders, due to major traffic problem, want to hop on rail, no more enough rail cars to handle the influx of new ridership. Need to wait couple of hours for rail to make round trip back. But then no can because major traffic accident was big rig went plow into rail support structure causing potential structural damage and DOT makes a call to halt rail. 😆

  105. cocobean November 1, 2012 3:09 pm

Rail. I’m 62 doubt I’ll see it in my lifetime. There’s too much money to be made by stretching it out as long as possible. Delay costs always finds it’s way into someone’s pocket.

Rail. Is scheduled for completion in 2019 ( only 7 years away) but the environmental terrorists are doing everything in their power to stop it. Look at H-3; it has been such a blessing to Oahu but the environmental terrorists stopped it for many years.

It will get built. We need to be firm in our commitment to rail. Don’t be afraid. Honolulu will be a world class city.

  113. Committed Road Warrior November 1, 2012 3:27 pm

    Shoko:

Temple plays their home games in the Philadelphia Eagles’ stadium, which has a typical NFL stadium capacity of about ~68,000. When it comes to attendance, Temple averaged 28,000 in their last year in the MAC, and it hasn’t gotten much better since moving to the Big East (they’re averaging 29,000 thru 4 home games). Needless to say their stadium looks empty most of the time even if they manage to pull 40,000.

Also, I can guarantee that Temple will not be left at home should they become bowl-eligible. If they were still in the MAC, a 6-6 record would be a toss-up for them. But being a BCS school now, I don’t remember the last time, if ever, a bowl-eligible BCS school didn’t get a bowl invite.

  115. cocobean November 1, 2012 3:34 pm

kev-1. To be honest it’s not just the sched. It’s not because the team is not “entertaining.” It’s the overall feel at the stadium. Maybe it’s the revamped intro. Maybe it’s the jerseys(no names).

Maybe old guys like me are slower to accept change. Maybe to say disconnected to the team was not quite correct. It should have been disconnected to the overall game experience I’m used to.

  116. madeinhawaii November 1, 2012 3:37 pm

The more roads you build the more cars will be put on it. It has always been that way, it will always be that way. The current plans for the rail system may not go to Waialua, but who says it won’t eventually? And where did you get the rail schedule from? I didn’t know it was only going to go on an hourly basis. The ones in Tokyo repeat just about every 5 minutes… and on time, at that.

No, it won’t get there immediately and probably will be on ongoing project over the next few decades, creating jobs, new economic centers (T.O.D.), greater opportunities for out future generations than more roads would, AND over the course of time it help making us so much less dependent on fossil fuels and the pollution that the fuels and tires choke our air with….

Hawaii’s population will not recede. There will be more cars than our roads can handle no matter how many roads we build.

  117. papajoe2 November 1, 2012 3:43 pm

Most of my friends who don’t want rail, have never ridden on one. I’ve been to San Diego, Washington D.C., New York, and even Las Vegas and, being a tourist, used the Rail. It was great! I know the price is really, really high but what convinced me was my brother got back from an Australian vacation with his anti-rail, adult children. They timed the stops at each terminal and the LONGEST stop was 14 seconds. Yesterday, my was wife who works in Waikiki got home to Mililani 2 hours and 20 minutes after she finished work at 4:00 pm. We missed our dinner reservation so decided to bbq at home instead. While reading facebook, my sister commented that she would have been home in Waipahu from Sand Island, a long time ago if there was rail. Also took her over 2 hours. More cars would have been off the road if there was rail because of the accident, thus making the commute shorter for those who didn’t ride the rail. Completion in 7 years is probably a good time when I will consider not driving or driving less because of my age. As you get older, driving at night becomes an adventure.

  120. papajoe2 November 1, 2012 3:54 pm

#118 HM, I remember last year we were talking about all the injuries (Moniz, for 1, o linemen, etc.) and also the years before. Although I really hate the injuries, it is a part of the game. Colorado State may have had more players out than UH did. They were down to their 3rd qb who was a true freshman and many linemen were out too. I recall the other teams we played also had their share of injuries. Its just too bad. We just have to adjust as best as we can and move on with no excuses. I always told my players “excuses are for losers.” After each game, look who is making excuses………..the losers. We just gotta learn from our mistakes and move on. Go Warriors!

    #104,

You do realize its not ONE rail car that is going back and forth like Pearlridge monorail right?

  122. AlaWai November 1, 2012 3:59 pm

MIH, I like your thinking. I look at the problem as real estate. Oahu is not making any more. We are now approaching the rats in the maze stage where there are more rats than maze. The way to solve it is to build on top of the maze so rats can traverse the city without adding to the congestion. More bus lanes spread congestion horizontally we have to think vertically. The overly congested maze is causing raging rats and tension, resulting in more speeding rats. Some have a different concept of how fast they can move through the maze. The ragers are causing injury and death to innocent rats. Imua Rail. Rats!

  123. Ao no ho'i November 1, 2012 4:02 pm

#12 Pauoa Boy – It’s because Chow and the asst. coaches are putting a lot of energy into discouraging backups to rescind their scholarships. Plain and simple. Many healthy players on the you know what list have no chance to suit up. Whether or not a fan thinks this Machiavelian approach helps in future years, IMO not conducive to winning this year, or positive team morale. These young men deserve better.

  124. Chicken Grease November 1, 2012 4:23 pm

A Grease has also been on rail/subway/train systems inside and outside of the country (you almost hate owning/driving your car — and a Grease NEEDS his car on Oahu; but wouldn’t mind riding rail every so often. A Grease also sees rail being beneficial for many on this island: 1) those who can’t drive; 2) those who don’t want to drive; 3) alternative to traffic, etc. — when enjoying rail in other lands) and they are simply great modes of transportation.

So fast. A to B faster than your Lambors, etc. Ironic, no?

Also, it’s sickening to see those rail haters who don’t see their inconsistency whenever they complain about those-who-got-theirs-but-don’t-care-about-what others-get. Yeah.

  125. tommui November 1, 2012 4:26 pm

    RAIL derailed

There was a breaking news on the SA website that this afternoon, a Federal Judge (Tashima from CA) said that the rail cannot proceed as the City had not made a complete survey of burial sites along the route and cannot proceed until they do.

Sounds like a repeat of the Superferry where (this time) the City tries to shortcut the necessary procedures which will costs us more money.

I should add that I have always been interested in a rail system back in late 60’s or early 70’s when Tom Gill was pushing for it – only it was from Hawaii Kai to downtown with a stop at UH. If I remember correctly, he was thinking of monorails rather than steel on steel.

  126. Chicken Grease November 1, 2012 4:33 pm

Mayor Carlisle and Dan Grabauskas (HART CEO) doing live news conference at Honolulu Hale right now.

Carlisle just said, “This does NOT stop rail.”

Grabauskas is calm in his delivery.

Work can still be completed and the archaeological findings will continue.

Hawaii News Now Shawn Ching even saying — right now — that the City prevails (Ching has a law degree. A Grease means, if we wanna keep talking about Donavan’s adjective-rich MBA).

  127. Pauoa Boy November 1, 2012 4:47 pm

    Ao no ho’i,

I just think if you are on the team busting okole everyday, get 4 spots left…why not fill it with guys who working hard and deserve a chance to suit up. If they get in the game great, if not at least they can be there as a morale boost. It’s a road game so going need all the bodies available that can contribute if need be. It’s like saying I just taking my guys the rest of you haven’t done enough to warrant a spot to go. Total BS if you ask me which like I said there’s going to be a handful of bodies leaving at seasons end. The fact that you cannot even sniff the field for games after putting in work would raise a red flag for me as a player. Sad if you ask me…

  131. Ao no ho'i November 1, 2012 5:07 pm

PB: Agreed. I think that’s what many on this site are missing. Too many quality players who contributed last year, too many quality young men who have busted their ass every single practice have been yanked around, essentially black-balled from even wearing the uniform now. This is very common knowledge amongst the players. The news gets around, and it’s not about non-starters griping. It’s about coaches who exhibit zero leadership qualities, and treating young men giving 100% like complete sh%t. The irony is, as they look to force players to quit and rescind their scholarships, it will only hurt their recruiting chances, especially locally.

  132. gobows November 1, 2012 5:08 pm

#121 eh you misunderstood #104, he was talking about if you already on the rail, and miss your stop, you gotta ride the entire thing until you get back to your stop. that’s potagee style…

  133. Old School Dave November 1, 2012 5:08 pm

Let’s not forget that June Jones cut or kicked off the team some 20 players when he took over the program in 1999. Included in that group was the team’s top rusher in Charles Tharp. More players continued to transfer after that season.

I’m not sure if you can still do that today without tanking your APR Rating which would result in the loss of scholarships.

  134. SAWARRIOR November 1, 2012 5:17 pm

    127. i agree, it’s BS. chow has to show loyalty to his players for players to show loyalty to him. i’m sure he could find 4 hard-working deserving players to take on the road if he wanted to.

We all lose as rail will cost us money whether it is built or not. I hope they do this right so it doesn’t get 86ed like the Super Ferry. Did anybody see Gov. Ariyoshi on KGMB News. He said that it was a hard choice chosing between the mayoral candidates, but because Cayetano was anti-rail, he had to chose Cadwell. Said that traffic is a mess now and will get worst 10 years from now. Also, said something like its time we do something for the Westside people instead of dumping our trash on them. With Inouye, Ariyoshi, yes Caldwell, Hirono . . . many major Dems backing rail, you must needs wonder (pardon the indirect pun) about Cayetano’s motives in this.

What is unionized labor going to count on in the next 20 years going need to finish rail.

As a Grease mentions over at Political Radar, you must needs wonder Cayetano’s motives. Union has almost always supported him in elections that he has never lost (he makes a point of mentioning just

This on a regular basis [“I never lost an election that I ran for” something or other.]). Union votes helped put him in office.

And he complains that they are directing everything for the people of Hawaii, now? With this election?

I don’t get it. When do the other Dems trick him into going to an unscheduled meeting at Donkey HQ to do an intervention?

Good question, but, think this guy was in the opposite direction-going lane, slammed into the partition (that separates lane going Diamond Head vs. Lane going Ewa) as he travelled Diamond Head way, slamming SO much as to also affect the zipper lane concrete structure.

The garb’ truck driver was not in the zipper lane at the time.

ppj2 – I agree. I lived in the DC area, and while I didn’t use the subway very often once I got a car, it was great that it was there. We used it when we went on vacation a couple of years ago. Beats trying to find parking in downtown DC.

A lot of the complaints on my side of the island are that we have to pay for it but it’ll never come here. My response is, that’s what being a part of a community is. I can’t see the rail ever coming to the Windward side unless they figure out how to get it over the mountains.

regarding not filling up the travel spots…

in my opinion you fill them for one reason- better safe then sorry. better to make sure you got enough players at hand.

BUT in that, how many guys will you really play? I think this is what chow is looking at…how many guys would he really play. there’s no free ride with this team. and i think it can be seen in travel spots and it will be seen in scholarships. you earn your spot, after earning your spot, you earn playing time. i think this is the message he’s sending and i think it’s a good one. guys on scholies had better stay awake because until chow gets players he wants in place, you are one of two things–useful, or expendable. chow made it clear, he said he is prepping guys for the nfl. if you take that into account it means as a player you had better step up and push yourself to another level. some will rise and some will fall.

    regarding rail

After living in singapore for a many years i suggest or lawmakers study their system. If you want to know how to put rail on a small island without it being an eye sore and have it be world class-follow their lead.

They use one narrow rail that splits as it comes into a terminal. trains are at a terminal every 5 minutes or so. the system is timed- that way they move the maximum amount of people in the shortest time possible with the least amount of rail/real estate used.

I did not like rail–and admittedly I never seen rail or used rail. After living and seeing it in singapore, i’m convinced if we do it-this is the best way where almost all can be happy.

like many, most of the people i know who do not want rail either have never lived outside of hawaii or have never used rail.

He would make a good AD. He’s a doer. Sees the big picture, works well with people, a proven fund raiser and is obviously an “insider” in the academic world of UH and the business community.

I can picture him as AD with Rockne AKA Luca Brazi as his enforcer. Their combined insider clout with the Rock handling the UH Admin and Amemiya the politicos and money men, should be able to get more things done for Athletics then whoever the search firm can come up with.

Again, going the route of using seach firms and selection by appointed committee has produced such winners as Dobelle, Frazier, MRC and Apple.

Moocher: I’ve visited Singapore several times. The island is a little smaller than Molokai (239 sq miles) with a population of about 4 million people. Years ago they considered a bus system, but the studies showed that it would only add to the growing traffic congestion. They decided to go with a rail system, Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), combined with the existing bus system, and now LRT (Light Rail Transit). Interesting thing is that at prior to every stop, they announce it in 4 languages – Chinese, Malay, Tamil, and English. It’s a very comfortable, clean, and convenient mode of transportation. Fine for smoking = $1000. Eating and/or drinking =$500.

Anybody watching this debate, election for Honolulu City Prosecutor.

    Kaneshiro vs. Takata.

This is a real fight, this debate. My fav’ of this 2012 election so far, local or national.

    ‘Bout 15 mins left.

  164. kev-1 November 1, 2012 8:15 pm

    Grease,

Isn’t that a case of the grasshopper against the master? Pretty sure Takata used to work under Kaneshiro.

  165. Cassi Cirigliano November 1, 2012 8:22 pm

I have read several good stuff here. Definitely worth bookmarking for revisiting. I wonder how so much effort you place to create such a great informative web site.

  166. Chicken Grease November 1, 2012 8:38 pm

Nah, I think Takata’s got some good ideas — and if what he’s saying about the Prosecutor’s office (day-to-day/how it’s being run) is all kapakahi, then maybe that s/be considered. Um.

Kaneshiro was good to give his proven track record and he really voiced his experience not only in the office, but, in the field. Heck, he pretty much convinced a Grease the merits of that puppy mill case.

Was interesting to hear Kaneshiro mention (more than a few times) Takata’s insubordination. A Grease doesn’t think “insubordination” wrong in ALL cases. It’s just when someone higher up than you don’t like what you’re doing and they can’t do anything else about it, they bring out the “insubordination” tool kit, heh.

Takata has strength in mentioning how he can solve this apparent case backlog. EVERYBODY — not just prosecuting attorney — have piles and piles of work backlogged nowadays so, Takata mentioning he can resolve this particular problem in a PROSECUTORS office, well, hate to use a reference from a criminal, but, in the words of Vincent Vega, “tha’s a bold statement.”

Kaneshiro really ended up showing Takata as a bit of a rabble rouser in the law and law enforcement community in Hawaii — at THIS Takata simply just sat there, seemingly.

Junk both of them agree on not wanting a concealed carry law. One of ’em, at least, said gun crimes are low enough to not warrant concealed carry. $#(7. “Remember Xerox” a Grease would remind both of ’em. Sad. The one who’d advocate that would be the winner, a Grease thinks.

A Grease knows Takata’s a Kaneshiro deputy; why you no think a Grease knows, kev-1, bwahahahaah.

    #132,

Once you get on a rail car, you are not trapped in one direction. If you miss your spot, you get out at the next stop and go to the other side of the station to catch the train going the other way.

It’s not like the Waikaloa Hotel ferry system.

  168. HiFlyer November 1, 2012 8:39 pm

I am not pro-rail or anti-rail, just do not believe that steel on steel is the way to go for the rail.

  171. cocobean November 1, 2012 8:55 pm

Takata was there for Kaneshiro’s first go around and was released immediately after Kaneshiro won his second go around. Seems to be more of a personality clash than philosophical differences.

Takata’s distain for Kaneshiro really came through.

Politics. Not to well versed on the issues but have voted in every election since I came of age.

They don’t make leaders like Burns, Blaisdell or Fasi anymore. Elections now are glorified popularity contests.

    cocobean,

Yes seniority counts big time. The longest serving senator is traditionally named president pro temp. President pro temp is 3rd in line of presidential succession (after VP and Speaker of the House).

Traditionally the most senior member of the majority party becomes chairman of the senate committee on appropriations. COA is considered to be the most powerful committee.

Lucky for us, the most senior Senator is non other than Daniel Inouye.

  175. cocobean November 1, 2012 9:06 pm

    cocobean,

it may take a while, but she does have the potential being so young. Electing Mufi or Lingle or anyone into their 50’s may make it very very difficult from a pure seniority standpoint.

Deep down I really believe this team will find its identity. Once they figure it out, they will be competetive. The struggles will pay off. Will it happen this week? Unlikely. But why not? I will always side with the why not. No matter how much I complain afterward.

kev-1. I agree with you about the team finding it’s identity. I couldn’t put my finger on it but there seems to be something missing from this team.

I chalked it up to new coaches, new regime, everything in flux. The coaches put every starting position up for grabs save Edwards and Iosefa. With every player competing for his share of playing time there seemed to be little thought to true team building on the players part.

With starters and roles taking shape the team is starting to find out who they are and what they can be.

Your statement gives me hope that all is not lost this season.

  185. laulau head November 1, 2012 9:39 pm

To add insult to Hawaii’s travel problems: The Warriors tried to arrange a lunch break at an In-N-Out in Bakersfield. But the fast-food joint said it could not handle the load, Chow said.

    It’s a conspiracy…nicely played, Fresno, nicely played…

  186. Pauoa Boy November 1, 2012 9:39 pm

    #157,

At this point in the season why not fill the roster? That type of logic has no team concept or loyalty whatsoever. He will lose this team as it seems he already has. This ain’t the NFL where these kids are getting paid to play. With a 1-6 season you tell me what NFL scout is going to be knocking on the door looking for prospects? The only guys who may get a look is Edwards and Dunnachie at this point if that. I don’t see any prepping for the NFL going on with the bad play-calling and bonehead decisions in not being able to put these players in any kind of position to win or showcase their skills. Nobody on the team is a lock to be drafted in the first couple rounds if at all. Only 11 can play at a time but what does it hurt to bring 4 more guys who can contribute on special teams or more lineman just in case. It ain’t like this team is chasing a championship this year let alone a winning season. You mean to tell me out of everyone on the team we cannot find 4 bodies who have busted their ass to earn playing time? Out of 85 scholarship guys, walk ons, etc… we only have 60 able bodies who earn playing time??? If this is the case then at least 1/3 of the team should be getting cut at seasons end since they’re just taking up space on the roster… Smells like some pilau juju going on to me…

Coach Chow wants more space for his 300lb OL. He will have four extra seats empty so they can have more leg room. How can we recruit kids to come to Hawaii when they find out how poorly we travel to the mainland.

  190. Chicken Grease November 1, 2012 9:55 pm

We gotta hope a Tulsi and Mazie — both of whom seem to be slated (especially with the latter) for U.S. Senatorial-ness in a Hawaii style can maintain the same things Sens Inouye and Akaka hath done for this great 50th state.

Especially when it comes to that shipyard at Pearl — recall we almost lost certain functions (that’s being conservative. Dang near lost the whole shebang!) to the likes of Virginia naval shipyards and others in the Continental U.S.

CINCPAC may be here, but there are a states ’round the country vying for the type of shipyard jobs coveted by many on Oahu alone — try keep an eye out when watching your local TV news; they usually report on regular “Pearl Shipyard Apprentice Application Fair Day” or likeness thereof; the story includes crowds that fill up the TV screen.

Or you ask someone who works at Pearl shipyard if they’re not at all nervous about 1/2 of Hawaii’s powerful Senate team exeunting office.

Keep track of the [different and/or lamenting] answer(s) you get. 😉

  191. HiFlyer November 1, 2012 9:57 pm

I would think that JD won’t take his job as AD back as it would be for only four of five months left on his original contract and he was not going to get an extension for more than one year. He accepted the current position because he said he needed to have a job, which gives him three years.

  192. SAWARRIOR November 1, 2012 10:07 pm

    166. a Grease, yeah too bad they no like concealed carry (CCL). these guys have lived in hawaii too long to think outside da box. they’re logic is off if they say not enough gun crimes committed in hawaii to warrant CCL. i wonda how many people have to die before CCL is allowed in hawaii.

if you get a guy on meth or whateva crazy drug deh doing, and he attacks you or your family, what are you going to do with the drugged out suppa strength they got. i remember a former hawaii rainbow pitcher, Mr Brown, a huge guy getting attacked and luckily he had training to take down the drugged-out attacker, but what does Tanaka and Kaneshiro think a 63 year old grandpa or grandma, or even a handicapped person supposed to do?

CCL works in other states, why wouldn’t it not work in hawaii? the Honolulu Police Dept.(HPD) like all other police forces is reactive and not pro-active force. da HPD can’t predict when or where a crime is going to take place. i think as responsible citizens we have a right to protect our selves and have CCL in hawaii.

    194. hey guess what, a lot of bad guys already have guns, i doubt they will care about getting a CCL. LMFAO

you have to have a clean record to have a CCL. not 1 meth head has committed a crime with a CCL in texas that im aware of. legal limit for DWI in texas in 0.08 BAC, it goes down to 0.04 if u have a CCL — gun or no gun in your procession. most CCL carriers are more responsible than the normal citizen. IMO

how many times have you been attacked in your lifetime you ask? eh Kev-1, it only takes ONE TIME. how many times have those folks in the colorado theater been shot at, it only takes ONE TIME. SMART AZZ. lol

    And # 192, SAWARRIOR.

Well, kev-1, a Grease’s idea is that for a Concealed Carry license wouldn’t just be given out like candy, hahaahaah.

I think there’s some statistic out there that shoes the # of those w/concealed carry license accused or charged w/a mass shooting — the answer is 0 (or at least not near the # of those who committed that act having procured their firearms illegally or, at least — as a tautology — did it without a CCL . . . a Grease is objective enough to not know whether the recent Colorado shooter Holmes had one such license [if a Grease we’re to guess, he did not have such license]).

Concealed Carry License (CCL) and a firearms license are two different things, to be clear, yes?

CCL good . . . makes the bad guys think twice; or, at least they better. 🙂

  199. Moocher November 1, 2012 10:35 pm

We came into the season knowing it was an overhaul. what do you do in overhauls? some things you keep, somethings you modify or fix, somethings well, they just wont work anymore with what you are trying to do.

Truth of the matter is the best thing that can come from this year are guys being better next year, a build up. Any time there is change there are people that assist and people that resist. In the beginning of the year I was also one who was calling for packages where graves could be utilized just like a lot of you. Then i realized chow is really trying to do something different. will it work, i dont know? but i do know that i have to give him my trust that he is building something special…and, as crappy as it is, i must be patient, it’s an overhaul.

is there a chance the chemistry of the team will implode-possibly. but i know this much. if we give players a reason to not like chow, not believe in chow, question chow, or anything like that, it will guaranteed all blow up and be an even worse wreck for not just this year, but for years to come. so I bite my tongue, and I don’t offer fuel for a wildfire within the team and divide the team.

If people feel like the seniors wasted their last year, then get out to the stadium win or lose and support them that way. I know this much. we had a losing season last year. we will have a losing season this year. JJ was an exception here, but not at SMU. We are in overhaul mode, parts are on order until then norm’s garage is open 24/7

This what a Grease is saying! Well, mostly along the lines of building a program.

Gotta give Coach his deserved chance. He hasn’t earned your respect? Well, like the Lord said to Job after his (Job’s) lamenting boo-hoo at the end: “I am the Lord, as you should know. Who the heck are you in the whole scheme of things? This is my Will.”

This week, Coach has said — several times and on radio — that he is STICKING WITH HIS quarterback. Amen. THAT’S COURAGE. THAT’S BEING A LEADER. He says this QB gives the Warriors the best chance to win. Yes. Let’s watch the games. Follow.

When Coach Jones left so relatively abruptly after the Sugar Bowl . . . nah. Could no longer be trusted. And a lot o’you want McMackin back; he was souring near the end. He had many years to beef it up. Wha’ happened? Chow deserves his first season chance . . . But, he’s already crucified by many already.

First season . . . first year as head coach. “Give chance” is part of “aloha” you know? Perhaps the “fire Coach Chow”s and/or “change the QB”s are reaiizing just these two things about Coach Chow — hardly see these posts anymore.

In the last, say, 15 years, has UH Warrior football changed coaches w/more predictable frequency than with any other school on the same FBS level? A Grease would like to know.

You suffering because of Warrior losses? Well, suffering brings you closer to the Lord. So know. Heaven awaits as Jesus hath set a place for us all.

    My 2-cents:

Keith Amemiya’s departure as BOR Administrator – too bad / so sad

Him leaving is a big loss for the University and an even bigger loss us fans of UH Athletics.

In my opinio, Amemiya should be the Athletic Director, get himself a “hatchet man”, then GO GET ‘EM.

With so much fat to trim, so much waste within the UH Athletic department, it would be refreshing almost, to see someone go in there and start swing away.

Temple – um, why the hell not?

Why not play a 13th game like the NCAA allows UH to do (“Hawaii Exemption”) I feel it’s almost disrespectful thatthe Warriors would have only 12 games scheduled. “Hello numb-nuts!!!” UH fought for the exempt ruling status and they’re not using it……WTF?

Joey Iosefa is class all the way—What he said I am sure is true. This team these coaches want to win, changing a team culture to do that is a tough ugly grinding course. It will be accomplished….strong will and determination is easily perceived as “stubborn”….Coach Chow and his guys are also adjusting to the system they engaged in. It seems simple on the outside but is difficult to say the least. Regarding travel numbers….I am sure based on who these coaches are, if someone truly deserved to travel they would……there could be a core of players that exceed the allowed number that “deserve” to travel. Take all but can not….take some—not right. Young Mr Iosefa says all I need to hear…..Go Warriors!!!!!

    Finally, a happy Aloha Friday!

Well, I hope you have a happy one.

  215. Garret November 2, 2012 2:51 am

If Temple will waive the normal ~$250k that UH gives to visiting nonconference schools (they give UH the same amount when UH visits them on the return trip of a home-and-home deal), that is a HUGE financial deal for UH. That could allow UH to not charge season-ticket holders and still make money (since any other tickets sold is profit).

Put it this way: The going rate to get a D-IA school to play at your stadium without having to play a game at their stadium is $1 mil to $2 mil right now. UH would be getting a “paycheck” game from Temple without having to give them a paycheck.

This is a unique situation because Temple only had 11 games scheduled after they decided right before the season to join the Big East (which has 1 less conference game than the MAC). Temple is getting a LOT more money by joining the Big East, so they can afford to travel to Hawaii…it must be nice for them to have their TV money increase by more than 100x (that is NOT an exaggeration) because the Big East needed someone to join right away and couldn’t wait for Boise State, SDSU, SMU, Houston, and UCF.

So, UH gets money. The airlines make money. The hotels make money. The players get the 13th game they want. The coaches get 2 extra weeks to teach their young players. All the stadium workers get extra money. Temple spends some of that extra Big East money they weren’t expecting to get 6 months ago. The Big East gets a chance to fill all of their bowl spots (and their bowls pay better than the Hawaii Bowl).

This is a nice situation where everybody wins. The only thing I worry about is the extra practice time will take away from the Academics of the players as the semester is ending…but at least being home for so long to end the season will give them time to take care of business in the classroom.

Hello ! That article is awesome But what the hell, that`s not right . I really do not mean any trolling, but have recently saw the other point of view. That`s why I cannot simply agree with autor`s opinion. And don’t start charging me for the scarcity of evidences ! All the proofs can be found up that link . But thanks for the article anyway.

    113. There have been a few Big East schools that went 6-6 and didnt go to a bowl game. Schools such as Syracuse (2003), Pittsburgh (2006) and Louiville (2007).

On the flipside, there have been schools that went bowling with only 11 scheduled games in a season such as South Florida (7-4, 2005), Syracuse (6-5, 2004) and Connecticut (7-4, 2004). But I think that may have to do with with not enough bowl eligible teams in those years.

  220. Slugger November 2, 2012 5:48 am

    Good morning, gang!

GO RAIL! Yes, find the ‘iwi and preserve them. But, build rail. I commuted for 4 years using BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) from Oakland to SF and it was great. BART is steel on steel and is not that noisy. It’s a maritime area and the equipment is holding up. The cities down the Peninsula (San Jose, Santa Clara) didn’t want BART decades ago & now it’s going to cost them billions, not millions, because they want light rail.

Use the Aloha Stadium parking lot as a Park & Go facility. The Fruitvale station in Oakland used to let you park free up above the first lower 3 levels where you paid for Preferred Parking. Now they are charging a small fee to park in the upper floors; supply & demand. Fees collected help pay for maintenance. Charge a buck to park at the Stadium during the week for commuters; put the kala back into the rail maintenance.

People have to think long term with rail. It would be wonderful to have a westside to UH terminus line, but it will take years.

The carmageddon on Wednesday really brings forth the need for non-auto/bus transit on island.

    Nuff on rail…

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    GO WAHINE!!! Softball tonight!

  221. Slugger November 2, 2012 5:49 am

    I would go to the Temple-UH game…

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  222. Chicken Grease November 2, 2012 6:59 am

    # 209. Would probably be the furthest thing from his mind.

This Temple game is becoming more played out than an old board game. Whoever’s in charge better p’ in the proverbial bowl or walk already.

What gets a Grease is — a Grease has mentioned this before — no UH Insider seemed to know Wonder (or knew some business type [manager?] Close to Wonder) to have bypassed ALL this nutty wire transfers, erc., to just simply ASK Wonder on that personal level if the R&Ber will do a concert for UH athletics. A Grease means (recall Stone’s JFK this is Grease being Jim Garrison meeting and presenting “X” with these concerns. And the response would probably astonish and incredulous a Grease.

See a Grease’s # 7, above . . . think if a 13th game were to happen THIS season, would be along those lines. 🙂

  223. mikey November 2, 2012 7:04 am

If Temple really want Warriors game They should send them a ticket to East coast and play at Temple. We probably can get a cheaper rate then Temple would plus the hotels will be full of Honolulu Marathon runners that weekend.

Be a nice Bowl game to end the season with upset at Big East for Warriors.

  224. mikey November 2, 2012 7:05 am

UH should package a Temple basketball game to go with this deal while it still Hot!

  225. mikey November 2, 2012 7:11 am

Now what’s this again with only 60 player on travel roster and by Bus to Fresno?

Where are you JD! We need you.
