Chris Naeole; Assistant Coach – Offensive Line
Lance Samuseva; Assistant Coach – Defensive Line

  3. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2015 8:49 am

I think Deardorff is going to be a good coach.

  4. jeezy33 April 3, 2015 8:58 am

Fairchild and Tavai seem like tweeners… Too small to play DL, not sure fast enough to play LB. Will be interested to see how they are used.

  5. NorthShoreFan April 3, 2015 8:58 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

Eh, no foget tomorrow, 8:00am make the Stanley look nice. Warrior Volleyball mini Manoa Makeover.

Eh, no foget tomorrow…Spring Practice!..hoo smell da football, smell da sweat. Football is here!

    IMUA WARRIORS!

  6. Da Punchbowl Kid April 3, 2015 9:21 am

Looking good! Let’s get this party started!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  7. Maddog50 April 3, 2015 9:21 am

In the eye of the observer I would be interested in the most physically transformed since last year. A few have to look completely different. Go Warriord!!!

  8. jeezy33 April 3, 2015 9:28 am

    7. Jerrell Jackson looks like a SEC cornerback physically. Looks is one thing though. Whether he is improving a lot, getting faster is another… I think he has the potential to be the best out of the group by the time he is done. Just an opinion. Mayo might be a good one too

  9. Bryson April 3, 2015 9:31 am

Is Kiha Sai no longer on the team?

  10. Derek April 3, 2015 9:32 am

Who is this Isaiah Houston? Never heard of him, but I like the sound of his name. I want to know more about him. Justin Vele graduated already? Who, how time flies.

I’m looking forward to seeing how Reilly is progressing.

  11. BigWave96744 April 3, 2015 9:40 am

    ST,you misspelled Duke’s last name

  12. st. anthony trojan April 3, 2015 9:43 am

For a few years now we are having a ‘attacking offense n defense’…
Same quotes….aspirations…rhetoric again this year ???

Be nice to see it manifest itself by 35 points or more….. average per game…or is that 2 much 2 ask ??

The clock is ticking…as the minute hand moves to the first practice…
FOOTABALL IS IN THE AIR…LITERALLY me hope…wish all 3 QB’s let her fly…

  13. BigWave96744 April 3, 2015 9:44 am

    No Anthony Pierce?
    No walkon QB?
Is Kawika Borden still awaiting his 6th year?

  14. Maddog50 April 3, 2015 9:47 am

Looking like a player is a start!!! Wonder what Kennedy, Peni, Leo and Meffy et al look like? A bunch of those young kids had to get bigger and more solid-

  15. Inyoface April 3, 2015 9:53 am

Let the OC do his job, I think Chow has to focus more on the defense. It seemed the only time Idaho State score much was when the defense couldn’t contain the opposing offense.

  16. Inyoface April 3, 2015 9:53 am

    Didn’t score much I mean.

  17. H-man April 3, 2015 10:11 am

Looks like Don’yeh Patterson didn’t stick around.

  18. PONO April 3, 2015 10:15 am

Doesn’t it look like the OL are rather light? I know weight isn’t everything but most college lines average in the high 290’s or 300’s. We have a lot of guys under 280.

  19. BigWave96744 April 3, 2015 10:16 am

    Colton Goeas?

  20. Bryson April 3, 2015 10:32 am

Unless this spring roster omitted scout team players…

  21. H-man April 3, 2015 10:34 am

Comparing Wisconsin’s spring roster to Hawaii’s (just numbers), Wisconsin has 16 O-linemen and 8 QBs to Hawaii’s 10 and 3, respectively. They seem to stack the team with more offensive players, including 17 WOs and TEs.

  22. tom April 3, 2015 11:15 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

  23. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2015 11:27 am

Kiha Sai took a medical retirement. Foot won’t heal

  24. turfwar April 3, 2015 11:34 am

One thing that’s been consistent since like forever is never take the weights given on the initial spring or fall rosters as close to accurate. Sometimes the rosters are redone with more recent info and those are much closer to the truth. But I never understood why it’s so difficult to get the player’s size right. They are monitored and written down by the staff somewhere and if you can’t find that list ask the players themselves. It really wouldn’t take that long.

  25. ALLAN April 3, 2015 11:56 am

YOU CAN’T SMELL SWEAT, ONLY SEE IT…WHAT YOU ARE SMELLING IS B.O. HAHAHAHAHAHA!! OH, AND DEAD/PROCESSED PIG.

  26. Haleakala April 3, 2015 11:56 am

Where is Aaron Zwahlen? Is he enrolling at UH later this year?

  27. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2015 12:15 pm

Zwahlen gets off mission in May. Then he arrives.

  28. Andrew April 3, 2015 12:16 pm

    26.

If Im not mistaken, he can join the team in summer

  29. Andrew April 3, 2015 12:16 pm

oh jus kidding he beat me to it haha

  30. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2015 12:18 pm

They actually weigh players before and after practices (to monitor hydration levels). You can ask Derek Inouchi if he can post updated heights/weights. He assembles the rosters.

  31. Stephen Tsai April 3, 2015 12:20 pm

I doubt UH will name an opening-day QB until mid-training camp in August.

  32. Andrew April 3, 2015 12:25 pm

    31.

Will they rank the QBs in any way after spring before going into Fall camp

  33. Tiki808 April 3, 2015 12:31 pm

    Ikaika Woolsey today’s paper.

  34. clyde April 3, 2015 12:32 pm

Yo, Stephen, sorry for beating a dead horse, but is John Ursua still in the mix? Thought he had Miah/Chad potential.

  35. Boolakanaka April 3, 2015 1:37 pm

Is it me, but isn’t that a whole bunch of linebackers???

  36. kahuna April 3, 2015 1:48 pm

There is a question regarding the rb. I think his name is Lambert Casey and not Casey Lambert. At least that is what his hudl highlights said.

I also matched his hometown and his JC…..and they all called him Lambert Casey. There is a Casey Lambert and I think that dude is from Serra High.

    Am I right???????

  37. SteveM April 3, 2015 1:51 pm

Boolakanaka — maybe try lots of linebackers for a 3-4 defense. Probably could use a few more defensive linemen though.

  38. Boolakanaka April 3, 2015 1:54 pm

SteveM, yeah, gotcha on that–but right now they have a 5 deep chart. Oline is like at 2.2…

  39. RB April 3, 2015 3:37 pm

wow no Anthony Pierce or Don’yeh Patterson. I said it last year Anthony Pierce not playing at all will transfer or quit UH and what do you know he aint even on the spring roster. I wonder what the reason for Don’yeh Patterson not being on the roster. Hmmmm only he knows I guess…

  40. islandman April 3, 2015 3:47 pm

OC Bailey doesn’t use a playbook, i think Stephen said on Bobby C Show.

  41. Andrew April 3, 2015 3:57 pm

    40.

I agree with ST and think that’s a good refreshing approach to coaching. Like he said, many students now days are more visual learners rather than ones to sit and stare at Xs and Os all day

  42. bouncingball April 3, 2015 5:38 pm

Very worrisome to see only three QBs listed with NONE of them of any proven quality at Div.1 level. For a head coach to be in his fourth year with such instability at the most critical position is not reassuring.

  43. hitman April 3, 2015 8:10 pm

aloha , everyone !! with only 3 qb are all going into camp getting the same amount of raps? ST of and of the 3 qbs do see change from last year coming in to this year ?

  44. seewhy April 3, 2015 8:18 pm

Interesting article on ESPN. UH will receive $1.2 million for traveling to The Ohio State this September.

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12612384/ohio-state-buckeyes-pay-3-early-home-foes-31-million-total

  45. Winning April 3, 2015 8:24 pm

Its going to tuff at QB position. Hope they surprise everyone. All 3 are question marks.

  46. beans April 3, 2015 9:12 pm

    Hitman @43
Raps? What no red jerseys for them this year? (;-0)

  47. Tiki808 April 3, 2015 9:56 pm

    Who is Samson Anguay?

  48. kryon April 3, 2015 10:10 pm

Hey Clyde and hopefully ST, I’ve been asking bout john ursua for months and have recieved no info other then something to do with qualifications. After that, no matter how many times I have asked for follow ups to this, no word or reply has been made. I too thought he was a play maker that could have brought excitement. We may never know cuz the people who can get us info are not saying anything.

  49. akuhead2 April 3, 2015 10:11 pm

#44 nice post. Now I see why, seewhy.

  50. Tiki808 April 3, 2015 11:48 pm

Which player died? Yesterday’s blog post Samson was #21. Was it he or the childhood friend that wore #27 or #21? I thought he died. Just checking. Also, why is Ikaika Woolsey starting? Probably because he got there first to start for UH football. The other 2 are backups for next year. Today’s newspaper.

  51. hitman April 3, 2015 11:57 pm

beans got get them ready for the season !! who can take more cracks !! lol

  52. Tiki808 April 4, 2015 1:00 am

The UH football team is relying on backups and age, with some few talents. Will they win games come fall 2015? Maybe. I think Norm Chow doesn’t care who plays, as long as they are able and willing to play. Not much else needed to play, and also some few dollars or more to play for UH football. Who is getting the free ride to play for UH football? Not sure. They all look the same. I guess, 50-50 season at best and one extra on the win-loss record for 2015. This is a good and generous give on my part on what I think of fall 2015 team.

  53. H-man April 4, 2015 2:51 am

Warriors are dangerously thin at QB. And Samson Anguay came out of Campbell HS, but has seen only limited playing time because of injuries. He had speed to burn, but the leg injuries have slowed him a bit. If healthy, he can be a real contributor at slot. Too bad he’s already a senior.

  54. MJP April 4, 2015 3:04 am

Funny how people used to rip into JJ because he had 5-6 QBs. You really can’t compare the spring ball rosters for positions because it depends on who you lost to graduation and attrition and who was recruited. We have a lot of players that won’t be reporting till fall.

Also many schools go through the process of notifying players that don’t fit into the future. I know of D1 programs that had those meetings with players after the recruiting period. That’s when you see all the transfers. All programs do that.

  55. BigWave96744 April 4, 2015 5:07 am

Samson Anguay used to wear #21.
He is switching to #27, so Damien Packer can wear #21 in memory of his childhood friend.

Oh the Walkon QB I was referring to above was Hunter Hughes.
I kept thinking Hunter Hearst Hemsley, aka Triple H 🙂

  56. kapakahi April 4, 2015 7:16 am

    ST,

Where’s WR walk-on prospect Malik Lockett?

    http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/warrior-beat/uh-football-auditions/

  57. Maddog50 April 4, 2015 7:41 am

So if a player medically retires does that free up a scholarship? Both lines are light even with incoming freshman. One or two maybe even three if nothing changes will be immediately injected into the depth chart pending no other additions—I think one maybe even two have the size and skill to make it. Right now OT is really a concern-

  58. tom April 4, 2015 7:55 am

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

If you going to watch the football practice, how about coming early and giving the volleyball team (and a bunch of Tsaikos) a hand at a mini-cleanup of the Low Campus and around the SSA?

I’m sure a couple of cases of water or ice or both would be most welcome

  59. Tanman April 4, 2015 8:19 am

Very nice, ST!! Thank you for the details!!!

    10 ol, 3 qb, 9 rb, 12 wr, 4 sb, 7 te/fb,
    9 dl, 19 lb, 7 s, 6 cb
    1 k, 1 p, 2 ls

    80 players?

The last few years, we tend to run out of offensive players because of injury: OL, QB, RB, WR, SB and TE… This year, at least they have more WR/SB and RB/FB/TE available. However, still do not feel that there are enough OL and QB… Not sure if all FB can be TE and vice versa… There were a lot of injury to the TE position the last few years.

Zwahlen coming in May will help with 4 QBs but still thin since we’ve lost almost 3 QBs at the same time last year and at least 2 QBs during the season two years ago. We also have Reily, who almost played last year. Looks like Jordan Wynn is out. I hope Don Bailey can make calls instead of Norm Chow… Coach Chow can chime in be should not take over.

For defense, I am not sure if 9 DL players are enough. Last few years, many injuries with DL. We also had problems with LB but looks like we have a lot of LB and may be some may be designated as pass-rushing LB in the 3-4 sets. Then, the strong number in LB may help with the lack of number in DL.

For the 7 S and 6 CB, they better all be able to play regular 2 and 2 formation as well as nickels and dimes. More teams are employing 4 or 5 WRs to spread out the field and we need S who can also play one-on-one and CB who not only can play man-to-man but can also make tackles.

BUT I CANNOT HELP IT, I AM STILL VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS UPCOMING SEASON!!!

However, I do feel good about the coaching staff this season, the line-up looks stronger than the previous years…

I am excited to see Wittek!! I hope that Woolsey can get more accurate, then he’ll be good. I’ve heard good things about Zwhalen and I hope that he is good too. I think we need one more QB recruit.

I hope that our OL can stay healthy and play well to protect whoever the QB is. They also need to work harder to open up holes for RB now that Iosefa has graduated. I think our RB will be alright if there are enough space for them to run. Please do not go up the middle ALL the time.

I hope UH can get one or two more great DL or at least one or two great pass-rushing LB… I hope Tom Mason is as good as Kevin Clune.

It is going to be a make or break season for Coach Chow. May be Coach Jones will stick around to see if coaching position open next year. May be Coach Chow will be recruiting openly while Coach Jones may be recruiting quietly…

Yes, it will be a new season. Yes, there is hope!! “A New Hope”… May the force be with the Rainbow Warriors!! Live long and prosper!!

Not to be mean or anything but I think Max should be the starter. I don’t really know how Woosley “deserves” it. If I saw potential, leadership or a little more wins under his belt I could see that but I didn’t see it at the end of last year. I understand Max still needs to prove himself but I think he can command the huddle as far as his experience and physical attributes.
