Spring forward

Spring is in sight.

Sort of.

Although spring does not officially arrive for another 52 days, major league baseball opens training next month, UH describes this as “spring semester,” and, in two days, the Rainbow Warriors begin their countdown to spring practice with the beginning of the offseason conditioning program.

The players received suggested workout  programs last month. They can work out officially under UH supervision beginning Wednesday. Some — like Taylor Graham, who is coming off a procedure on his non-throwing arm — will have limited workouts. The rest will go through the full strength and conditioning program. Spring practice will be held in April.

Remember Terrance Polk?

Polk, a receiver from Los Medanos College, said he still needs to pass a statistics class to earn an AA and be eligible to transfer to a Division I school. He said he is taking that class at Los Medanos.

Polk signed a letter of intent with the Warriors last year. He said he “most definitely” plans to join UH.

“Hawaii Warriors all day,” Polk said.

If he were to join UH, he would have two years to play two seasons.

Because of different circumstances, it still is difficult to determine the impact of a live telecast on men’s volleyball  attendance.

Last week, there were 1,492 fans for the UH-Long Beach State match that was televised and 2,020 for the non-televised rematch. But the first match was on a Thursday night, and the second on the Friday leading to a three-day weekend.

There were 1,553 for this past Friday’s UH-UC San Diego match that was televised, but only 1,311 for yesterday’s non-televised rematch. Friday’s match started at 7 p.m., and yesterday’s match began at 5 p.m. Plus, yesterday’s match went opposite the second half of the Pro Bowl.

Even to compare the Friday matches would be inconclusive because Long Beach State entered ranked No. 4 and UC San Diego is winless this season.

Stay tuned. Or not.

It should be interesting to see what the off season conditioning will produce. I am hopeful that all will take the regiment to building strong bodies to heart and make off season the start of a new season.

    Go Team!

If Polk signed last year out of high school wouldn’t he have 3 to play 2? If he only has 2 to play 2, I wonder if it would be a good idea to bring him in. Anyway good luck to him.

  7. Bugaz January 27, 2014 9:04 am

Best of luck to our coaches in their final push to secure future football Warriors.

  8. Stephen Tsai January 27, 2014 9:10 am

The follow-up is: Nope, I have no idea what’s up with Tigi Hill.

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Wonder about the methodology behind the TV or not TV.

  10. NorthShoreFan January 27, 2014 9:12 am

Guud Morning Tsaikos….wet…drizzly day in Hawaii nei…

televise or no…revenues?…exposure?…what will impact the programs more?…in a time when a lot of programs are looking for more exposure and revenues, how to optimize the two? Being an either or situation may not be the case because it’ll be difficult to analyze the impact of exposure….imho

  11. NorthShoreFan January 27, 2014 9:13 am

you can only lead them to the promise land….they got to do the walk

  12. NorthShoreFan January 27, 2014 9:15 am

I sometimes read comments fro our recruits that they loved to watch the Warriors…so…

  13. al January 27, 2014 9:24 am

bugaz…polk was a 2012 recruit out of the same los medanos cc. at the time he had 3for2.

having burned the 2013 season he becomes 2 for 2 guy noe.

i am wondering if he’ll be in shape to compete right away if he makes it through the academic gateway and would we stilll have a sxholie left for him???

  14. Stephen Tsai January 27, 2014 9:29 am

UH isn’t too worried, either way.
I think everyone is really upbeat about Stubblefield.

  15. Warrior Dave January 27, 2014 9:30 am

I’m not sure if Strength & Conditioning Coach Beamon was on board at this time last year. But I am anxious to see how our players respond this spring. I liked the changes I saw last year and it will continue to improve under this excellent coach. Let’s Go Warriors and work hard!!

  16. al January 27, 2014 9:30 am

i’d say that tigi hill and terrance polk are both in the same folder of that same filing cabinet.
i really hope things turn around for them whether they eventually become warriors or not.

  17. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 9:36 am

    16. Difference is Hill can come in and make a impact way quicker. Easier to learn the defensive scheme vs a offensive playbook that others have been practicing for months/years on the team.

  18. al January 27, 2014 9:38 am

agree with you there. nice bunch of incoming wr’s appear to be committed and coupled with haynes, kirkwood, harding, kemp, et al.

    reload!

  19. Whats up January 27, 2014 9:40 am

I think Polk could be a speed burner Gant type receiver, hopefully he makes it. Tigi would be a huge upgrade at safety but hopefully he can make it as well.

  20. al January 27, 2014 9:41 am

jeezy…and we need lb’s who can step in right away.
not only to shore up some oukas, but, typically lb’s should make up quite a number of your special teams guys as well as safety-types.

  21. al January 27, 2014 9:43 am

hard to believe that harding will be back there for us yet another year.

  22. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 9:45 am

    19. I think Gant was a lot better but even Gant took 2 years to flourish. It’s not easy to be a WR and learn the system fast without spring…. Davone Bess might have been the exception…I think he participated in spring though…

Pedroza is probably going to start at slot anyway.

  23. jm2375 January 27, 2014 9:46 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Good win for the Warriors last night. Nice momentum heading into 2 road trips.

From what I’ve heard, Oceanic and UH are in their “negotiating” period now. If they don’t come to an agreement by March (I think), then it goes out for bid. If you are unhappy with the way Oceanic has been doing things, WRITE letters (better than phone calls) to UH admin, UHAD, the newspapers, Oceanic, and other powers-that-be.

  24. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 9:51 am

    20. Poti def going to have to play right away and I expect Lataimua to play a lot more now that he has all off season to work with the top 2 units.

  25. al January 27, 2014 10:27 am

    pedroza has many drooling.

    i also like lataimua’s upside
    poti has the tools.
    hoping gener is back.

maybe tj goes on the line with the 3/4.

hoping mike andrade is healed up.

  26. ai-eee-soos January 27, 2014 10:44 am

    Holy …. “Higher Resource Group”

Read the SA article about Ben Jay’s trip to the NCAA convention ….

The BCS morphed into the “Big 5,” which now has rebranded itself as the

    “Higher Resource Group.”

  27. Whats up January 27, 2014 11:41 am

    24. If Polk makes it to UH, I don’t see Polk at the slot postion, with his speed he would be on the outside like a Gant, Bradley or during the Bess “time period” a Jason Rivers outside WR to stretch the field. Without spring ball it will be a challenge to break into the WR rotation. But then again, know never know with Bowens leaving the outside is a man short.

  28. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 11:50 am

    27. I really don’t know what to make of Polk considering he played in the worst JC conference in Nor Cal. But I still think guys like Kirkwood, Kemp, Haynes, Barker will have an edge on him without spring ball. Chris Gant was an All American in JC and he missed spring. Took him the whole 1st year to learn the system. Polk doesn’t have a redshirt year so you’re really gambling with a 2 for 2 guy when there are probably positions of bigger need at this point…. I would go for Tyler Trosin if I wanted a JC kid anyway… For David Graves teammate who signed with OSU and was a AA at American River.

  29. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 12:27 pm

Funny how pissed SMU fans are that June Jones was in Hawaii over the weekend and not recruiting…. One thing I dont miss about June…

  30. Warrior Dave January 27, 2014 12:54 pm

Jeezy, so the stories of JJ not recruiting or did very little is true in your opinion? All I know is that there wad some real talent in the field during his tenure. 2-3 losing seasons in 10 years and sent at least 1 player to the NFL what seemed like every year.

  31. Warrior Dave January 27, 2014 12:56 pm

BTW, I’m not trying to start an argument. I just wanted to state my opinion/ observation.

  32. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 12:56 pm

    30. JJ could evaluate… He didn’t have to out recruit anyone for guys like Grice Mullins or Greg Salas. He just evaluated them properly and offered while other schools didn’t… Getting harder and harder to fly under the radar with all these recruiting services and social media though.

  33. dannyp January 27, 2014 1:23 pm

    32

We beat out Utah for Salas…

  34. bowwar January 27, 2014 1:28 pm

ST: Thanks for providing the update on Polk…Are there any significant departures aside from Bowens from the football team?

  35. Ipu Man January 27, 2014 1:31 pm

The super bowl in cold stadiums is stupid.
Who decides things like this, anyhow?
Now in the Aloha Stadium after the Pro Bowl…
    That would be nice.
Better than southern Florida or California…Or Louisiana.

  36. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 1:31 pm

    33. No we didn’t. He did a interview in which he said his only options were Montana and Hawaii… Rivals and Scout are way off on their offers…

scout.com thinks Hawaii offered Louis Vailopa and Rivals thinks we offered Adam Noga.

  37. dannyp January 27, 2014 1:40 pm

Im not going off of Rivals or Scout. Im going off of this interview.

    http://www.prioritysports.biz/news/greg-salas-grabs-change/20120905

  38. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 2:03 pm

ok so maybe he did have an offer.. weird he wouldn’t even visit Utah.. But whatever.. my point is Jones didn’t out recruit teams for guys… He evaluated properly. Sometimes got kids just because of his reputation…. The only guys I ever remember being shocked landing were Isaac Sopaga and Ryan Mouton.

  39. Jeezy33 January 27, 2014 2:12 pm

Fans get way mixed up into the offers game… Sometimes offers are presented and recruits have a 2 week window to commit or get offered as a contingency … On paper, it looks like Hawaii beat out ucla for Ammon barker and lakalaka, but in reality, the offer game isn’t black and white like that .

  40. Whats up January 27, 2014 2:14 pm

I’m not going to lie, I can’t wait to see Ammon Barker and Quinton Pedroza on the field at slot/WR. And the incoming Stubblefield is supposed to be a stud like a Jason Rivers. Of course, I’m not sure about that though? However, the incoming WR recruits from Florida and Maryland look really smooth and fast.

But even with all the talent at WR like Kirkwood, Kemp, Haynes, Barker, Pedroza and incoming Devan Stubblefield, Darrian Josey, Nick Nelson and any other suprise commits at WR. Hawaii still has to find out who is going to take the reigns at QB to throw the ball to all these talented WR’s?

  41. jm2375 January 27, 2014 2:17 pm

Congrats to Keith Shamburger on his BWC POW award.

  42. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 2:41 pm

Hawaii just struck gold at LB!

  43. mauiwarrior January 27, 2014 2:58 pm

    Jeezy33

Didn’t Salas end up at UH cause we offered as a WR recruit vs other schools offering as DB/S/ATH? Thought thats what I remembered……

  44. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 3:06 pm

    45. Honestly don’t know… Next time, I’m not going to use questionable examples…… too many grey areas when it comes to recruiting….

  45. Turfwar January 27, 2014 3:09 pm

If Mageo commit is true… Wow.

  46. mauiwarrior January 27, 2014 3:12 pm

Mageo looks good and in a competitive league to.

  47. Warrior Dave January 27, 2014 3:40 pm

How do we know he committed to UH?

  48. al January 27, 2014 3:45 pm

didn’t salas first work out at safety?

  49. jonj January 27, 2014 3:49 pm

Mageo tape looks good! Needs to bulk up a bit!

  50. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 3:50 pm

    49. His teammates at Serra seem to be announcing it over twitter…

  51. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 3:51 pm

    51. Always better to have long and athletic kids who can bulk up versus bigger kids who need to cut weight.

  52. 3-Prong January 27, 2014 4:16 pm

Had to work on Maui today. Mission accomplished. Hit “tiffanys” for a late lunch. Happy to report that beer is still cold and pupus are “da bomb”. hehe

    ……back to regular programming.

  53. al January 27, 2014 4:22 pm

    tiffany’s…its been awhile.
miso butterfish, sizzlin’ steak n onions, kalbi, kim chee fried rice w/eggs over easy, honey walnut shrimp, seafood noodle, etc.

  54. 3-Prong January 27, 2014 4:27 pm

Honey walnut shrimp, sizzling steak bites, poke, and house fried rice. Rushed to make the flight. Dat was a fast 5 Sam Adams.

  55. whitey January 27, 2014 4:41 pm

wonder if this was one of coach clune’s recruits.

  56. 76SOUTH January 27, 2014 4:53 pm

The thing that worries me about stubblefield is him getting drafted high in baseball and then taking the offer (like Shane Victorino getting offered by JJ).

  57. old808 January 27, 2014 4:54 pm

Maybe Hawaii should offer his teammate Ardiz Perez. Unbelievable story about how both of them came back from their adversity (Perez neck injury and told he would never play football again) and Mageo (he was stabbed in his Junior year and had a kidney removed). You talk about individuals with determination and heart.

  58. jeezy33 January 27, 2014 4:56 pm

    58. He’s not close to the same level as Shane as far as baseball goes… He hit 265. only stole 2 SBs. He’ll probably get drafted though. Just not high enough to turn down a football scholarship in my opinion..

  59. Slugger January 27, 2014 8:31 pm

    Go VolleyBows!

  60. kama krab January 27, 2014 9:01 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

No speculation here, only truth. People better be worried about D. Stubs. The scouts are flooding the phone lines trying to get info on the kid. Kids athletic ability has yet to be reached in either sport but if Stubblefield even has a decent year this year he will go high in the draft and will have a hard decision to make. The kid is an unbelievable talent and an even better person. He will definitely do well this year and will probably get drafted high enough to make it interesting.

  61. kama krab January 27, 2014 9:13 pm

    #60 jeezy33,

Yes he will get drafted, that’s not in question. Getting drafted high enough to turn down a football scholarship is yet to be seen but the way the scouts have been lighting up the phones it may just be a matter of time.

And yes I don’t think baseball wise he is quite there compared to Shane V. but potential is there to be very much better than Shane V. coming out of high school. Just looking at the measurables alone will tell that if potential is reached, D. Stubs could be one of the best baseball talents to come out of Hawaii in a long time. With his speed and power alone would make him a solid talent but if he ever put in the baseball savy and put in a little bit more work with the bat and glove, skies the limit.

  62. Leahi2 January 27, 2014 10:33 pm

I thought D. Stub. wanted to stay home with his mom who is in the military and stationed in Hawaii. If this is true, why would he want to play baseball on the mainland and in the class A level of baseball? If he doesn’t play like a real big all star in HS he might as well forget Pro Baseball. Because unless he knows that he’ll be making it someday soon to the Big Leagues, he might as well accept a scholarship to play football college. He ought to know that playing in the Class A or Double A is the pits and that is saying even if you like baseball. That is no way to start a career. By the way I am assuming that he will not get a lucrative offer.

  63. wafan January 28, 2014 4:24 am
