Specialists sought

It is now estimated the Warriors will need to cut up to 30 players at the end of spring training to make room for the recruits and preferred walk-ons who will join this summer.

Head coach Greg McMackin has emphasized that the best way to make the team is by earning a spot on one of the six special-team units. During Wednesday’s extended session for specialists, McMackin told the players: “It starts right here.”

One thing is for sure: The Warriors want to settle on a player who can launch deep kickoffs. A great emphasis is being placed on field position as opposed to net kick-return averages.

Was it mentioned that defensive tackle Sam Ohai (left) was cleared to practice?

Former UH running back/linebacker Jake Heun is turning pro … in MMA fighting. He has a bout set up in Alaska next month.

It would be a nice gesture if some members of the winning Kamehameha senior class sing the national anthem at tonight’s basketball game. A hana hou is deserved after last night’s song contest.

  8. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 9:02 am

    LK:

They haven’t really worked on team drills on kickoffs yet. They’re still assembling the parts.

Most of the team work has been field-goal attempts.

  9. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 9:03 am

    It’ll be an interesting week.

The campus is supposed to be closed, but I imagine the football staff will be working, especially defensive coordinator Dave Aranda. That guy is always plotting or chatting up contacts on the cell.

  12. LK March 19, 2011 9:09 am

    ST,

Thanks. I know Tomey will have them ready to go. In his first go ’round here he always had his teams well prepared.

Wow – glad that Sam Ohai got his clearance.

” … Was it mentioned that defensive tackle Sam Ohai (left) was cleared to practice? … ‘

  16. al March 19, 2011 9:12 am

my pick is tyler hadden to do all place kicking, ko, and back up punter. that saves a roster spot on the road.

  17. al March 19, 2011 9:12 am

30 cuts is a lot for now.

  18. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 9:14 am

wow, that Jake Heun looks mean, real mean! Good luck to him!

  19. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 9:15 am

Thirty is a lot. At least everyone is getting what appears to be a fair shot.

  20. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 9:15 am

I feel sorry for the 30 that will be cut. But, that’s life, I guess.

  21. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 9:16 am

    Gigi:

    That’s actually his happy face.

He showed up yesterday, asked him to pose, and this is what turned up.

  22. LK March 19, 2011 9:18 am

    Yes Gigi,

    Typical boy pose.

  23. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 9:19 am

I think if you’re a linebacker, you have a good chance.

From what I gather, here are the LBs:

    Aulola Tonga

    Darryl McBride

    Aaron Brown

    Corey Paredes

    Jordan Monico

    George Daily-Lyles

    T.J. Taimatuia

    Art Laurel

  24. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 9:20 am

Paredes isn’t practicing while recovering from shoulder surgery.

Don’t think Taimatuia has had any contact work yet, either.

  25. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 9:21 am

It will an interesting scrimmage in Hilo.

  26. madeinhawaii March 19, 2011 9:22 am

30? How many are showing up for practice?

  27. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 9:22 am

    ST,

will the team stay overnight in a hotel in Hilo or is it just a one-day thing?

  28. ai-eee-soos March 19, 2011 9:24 am

ST: Has George Daily-Lyles put on some weight/muscle ? That would really help.

  29. madeinhawaii March 19, 2011 9:25 am

I suppose many of those “cut” will be back on the roster when the season starts, though. Hopefully.

  30. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 9:27 am

Daily-Lyles has been working on his endurance … and meanness.

  31. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 9:28 am

    Re: Hilo

    It’s a one-day trip.

Get there in the morning, leave in the afternoon.

I think the majority of the players are on the 4 p.m. flight.

Hey, folks have to get back for senior night.

  32. d1shima March 19, 2011 9:28 am

    …and his “reading”?

  33. Slugger March 19, 2011 9:30 am

  36. Michigan Warrior March 19, 2011 9:36 am

    Good afternoon/morning, everyone!

Starting to get exciting, seeing so many fighting for roster spots.

Good luck to Jake Heun on his future!

Got some good hitters on that LB list! Just make sure we wrap up and not let the other team get extra yardage ’cause we neva tackle ’em.

… and yes, let’s kick that ball as hard and as far as we can!

    Busy time for Winter sports!

    Go, Warriors!

    Go, ‘Bows!

    Go, Wahine!

  39. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 9:58 am

yes, we are going to the auto show. Why? Because I am thinking of buying an all-electric car.

Hubby: I think you are crazy to buy an electric car. I can just picture you stuck in Haleiwa because you ran out of power.

Me: Same thing could happen to a gas-powered car…!!!

  40. Da Punchbowl Kid March 19, 2011 10:46 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Good luck to the guys “on the bubble”. Here’s wishing you a “specia”l future.

    MIH,

Per the article in today’s SA, it will take 4-6 hours to recharge!

    Good news:

    $4,500 rebate for the car

$500 rebate for home charging station

  45. SteveM March 19, 2011 10:54 am

    gigi — hubby’s fears are unfounded….you… in Haleiwa? 🙂

  46. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 10:58 am

    SteveM,

truth: I drive only 1-3 times a week, and there’s nothing wrong with my 2002 Hyundai Accent. Current mileage: 21,500 miles.

But, I am considering an electric car because of the environment.

    Anyway, that’s about 2 years from now…

  47. madeinhawaii March 19, 2011 10:59 am

    Gigi…

4-6 hours for a full charge.. but you don’t need a full charge to get home.

  48. Garret March 19, 2011 11:02 am

Another football link…this time, a feature on Coach Tomey.

Over 30 years ago, Dick Tomey found himself coaching at the University of Hawaii. Now, after numerous coaching stops, Tomey is back home.

“It is like a lot of things in life because it is a big circle,” Tomey said. “I have number of players that are sons of guys that were on original teams, the athletic director was a player on our team and one of the assistant coaches is still here from when I was here.”

Tomey has been coaching for a while now and says that he still has plenty to learn about the modern day systems.

“I have a lot to learn,” he said. “Every staff calls everything differently and the terminology is different. To be in charge of all special teams is a big responsibility and I am learning all of the new players and learning where they are from. There is no question that I have a lot to learn.”

  49. Bigislandkurt March 19, 2011 11:29 am

Kamalani Alo certainly past the eye test eh? Could this be the next great local bradduh DB for UH?

Glad to hear that Iosefa doing his thing!

    BIK

    HiYa!

    Hiho!

  51. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 11:41 am

This should be a big year for Kamalani Alo.

There’s something Leonard Peters-like about him.

  52. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 11:43 am

    Garret:

To Tomey’s credit, he’s really taking his time to learn about the personnel and implement his schemes. That’s a sign of maturity. He doesn’t want to force his system on others.

  53. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 11:58 am

I liked Leonard Peters, especially Barry Markowitz’s beautiful pictures of him.

Is he still performing at the Polynesian Culture Center? If he’s still in Hawaii, he should be a football volunteer. There are lots of clinics for the youths.

  54. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 12:02 pm

Another Warrior I loved to watch and still remember fondly is Jeff Ulbrich (sp?). What a success story he is!

  55. madeinhawaii March 19, 2011 12:31 pm

I thought Leonard Peters was playing rugby somewhere.

  56. d1shima March 19, 2011 12:31 pm

Just reading what Garret posted about Tomey makes it sound like he never advanced his knowledge from 30 years ago!

He was coaching in the NFL just 8 years ago and a FBS HC 2 years ago….”modern day systems”?

  57. 99club March 19, 2011 12:38 pm

Nice article ST. I can’t wait to watch the 2011 version of the ‘run’ in the run and shoot. Wear ’em down chasing Sterling early and then pound the daylights out of them late in the game with Iosefa. Mr. Iosefa is going to be a bruiser for years to come.

  58. d1shima March 19, 2011 12:39 pm

at least more people have extension cords than gas cans or jumper cables.

    gigi-

I’m not buying hybrid or electric until I see Radio Shack selling the batteries for them. Hyundai’s gas-powered Elantra gets 40 mpg on the highway, is made in USA, gives $500 off to both active duty and retired military, and is #1 rated in Consumer Reports. I’m just sayin’. I dare you to show this post to hubby. 🙂

  67. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 1:28 pm

    99club,

What you say is true, but don’t you want to save the environment???

Actually, I wish we could afford a photovoltaic system for our house for the sake of the environment, too.

A friend who lives in Pearl City had that done to her house. Most recent HECO bill was $30 for a family of 3 adults!!!

  68. d1shima March 19, 2011 1:28 pm

    LK,

    😆

  69. d1shima March 19, 2011 1:30 pm

The environment probably can survive with your 2000 miles of driving per year.

hubby’s good with #’s…make sure he includes the added insurance cost!

  70. 99club March 19, 2011 1:32 pm

    SteveM-

Cut and paste into Google Maps and it works…yes, I’m going to Vegas too. Already updated on your site. Yeah, it’s a serious road trip via several national parks: Arches, Yellowstone, Crater Lake, Kings Canyon and Sequoia. 99club tours prices it at $1100 including gas ($4 per gal.), lodging, and park entrance fees. 🙂

  80. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 2:36 pm

    ST and 99club,

have you heard of Battery Bob? or is it Battery Bill?

A couple of weeks ago, hubby shopped there and bought a battery for my camera at a reasonable price. They sell all kinds of batteries there.

It might be better than Radio Shack.

  81. Bowwar March 19, 2011 2:48 pm

Battery Bill is a great place to shop for all types of batteries…I replaced my UPS batteries there.

  83. d1shima March 19, 2011 3:21 pm

    What a finish!

  84. Kapahulu March 19, 2011 3:25 pm

    Hybrids work:

I have had a Prius Hybrid since 2004. The most PMG I got on a tank of gas was 56.9 MPG.

Usually I get about 53 MPG. I put in 10 gals of gas and travel 500+ miles. I put 100,000 miles on the car and have not had any problems. Love that car. Runs quiet and smooth.

Only one problem………runs so quiet, people cannot hear me coming. Have to watch for people not looking where they are going and stepping in front of my car……like in a super market parking lot. Thinking of turning my second car in for a new Prius or maybe EV.

  85. 99club March 19, 2011 3:29 pm

That Butler Coach looks like he’s no older than his players!

    Pitt-Butler game:

I think as an official, it would have been better to let that last second foul go and let the teams determine the winner in OT. Even the Butler coach said he felt bad for Pitt to lose the way it did. Oh well…

  93. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2011 4:18 pm

Feel bad for Jamie Dixon. But, hey, that’s why tournaments are played.

Leonard Peters’ last year, maybe last two years were what put the signature on his career. Up until then, he struggled through injuries and for the most part was a fairly “average” underclassman. I sure hope Kamalani does not take that long to get up to speed. I been waiting for these youngstas to hit the field.

  127. Manoa Mist March 19, 2011 9:52 pm

Tough loss for Gib tonight but I give the kid an A for the season. Like his energy.

Tough day at Hawaii Kai GC. Good thing Powder Puff didn’t see this. Wind not just blowing, gusting wind advisory stuff. Hats blown off. Ball blown off the tee twice.

Hit a bird in a tree. The bird was like… crying. Last time at Makaha almost hit a horse, I’m like Michael Vick now. Hit so many trees today people thought I was celebrating Arbor Day.

  128. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 9:54 pm

Yes, a tough loss for the Basketbows. During the last few minutes of the game, I was so pumped up, I felt like screaming my head off. Of course, it was all internal.

  129. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 9:55 pm

Well, at least they had a winning season.

  130. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 9:56 pm

I wonder how soon Miah will join the Warriors. Are they going to give him time to rest?

  131. gigi-hawaii March 19, 2011 9:58 pm

I thought Kanoa Leahey did a good job. Don’t know the name of the lady next to him.

  132. Slugger March 19, 2011 10:20 pm

I cheered for both basketball teams tonight. I’d be happy if either team won. Tight game at the end. Happy for USF since they are my alma mater. Now AnnodahLiz can go to SF to see them play U. of Santa Clara. We saw them in the West Coast Conference tournament in LV.

A winning season for the Bows is great. You can really see the receiver in Miah as he jumps for the balls on the court.

  133. al March 19, 2011 10:22 pm

the receiver i saw in miah was his quickness and hands.

  134. al March 19, 2011 10:24 pm

missed free throws was our achilles heel.

one could attribute that to the lack of a bench to provide enough relief for the stretch run.

    we’ll have depth next year.

ah…as they say. wait till next year

  135. kruzen March 19, 2011 10:39 pm

tough loss but Warrior Basketball is going in the right direction. congrats to them for a winning season and looking forward to a better year next season.

also, nice win by bows baseball.

  136. PowderPuff March 19, 2011 10:45 pm

al, you’re right. Those free throws…ai yah! But congrats to Coach Gib and team on a terrific season.

Manoa Mist: I don’t think the golf gods were kind to anyone today. We had a royal downpour at Royal Kunia on the 2nd hole! And intermittent rain and wind through the front…brutal. Scores weren’t typical “Royal Kunia scores.”

Tough loss for the basketBows. Already looking forward to next season.

  138. Jason March 19, 2011 10:51 pm

Hi everyone! Long time no see! 🙂

Free throws did cost us in the end. Not to mention that freshman PG, #45, I was really impressed with him.

But geez, that must have been the most awful officiating job I’ve ever seen in person. I don’t know if you guys were able to see it on TV, but I was sitting in the 7th row, and I had a clear view of what was going on. USF consistently hand checked, hacked arms. Several times, the official that had a bad angle had to make a call because the other two with good angles weren’t watching the ball. It’s not an excuse for the end result–I think both teams adjusted to the way the refs were calling it–but still, it left me disappointed.

On this day (March 19) in the first year (2007) of The Warrior Beat blog … back up to 262 comments as unrest on the lack of football schedule makes the TV news via RK.

    Portions of ST’s blog entry…

Posted on: March 19, 2007 at 10:30:42 am

    UH to play OD

Just returned from UH, and the football coaches are resigned to a schedule with (at least) two Division I-AA opponents.

One coach joked the Warriors would open against OD.

    OD?

    Open Date.

Asked about the opener, a UH safety said: “I think we’re playing Madden that day.”

    * * *

It seems there are a lot more people in need of a fridge than the UH official who recently received one as part of a trade agreement.

The ticket-office workers desperately need a new one. Their fridge door is broken, and a bungee cord is needed to keep the fridge closed. There even are instructions on how to properly secure the cord.

All of which got me thinking. One of the biggest gripes about the athletic director and his two close friends — Drinking Buddy and Money Man — is the lack of local etiquette.

The problem might be that nobody taught them when they first got here, and now it might be shameful for them to ask. For instance, a couple of years ago, a UH official thought it wasn’t important to play Hawai‘i Pono‘i before volleyball matches.

    Hawai‘i is indeed unique.

    In Hawai‘i:

    • We wave thanks to the other driver for allowing us to cut in front.

    • We bring food when invited to someone’s house for a party or function.

    • We bring back gifts from trips.

    • We give money at funerals.

    • We go to Longs on Sundays.

    • If the person behind us in line only has one item, we let the person cut in front. The person will say, “no, no, no.” But then we insist.

    • We take off our shoes before entering a house, pronounce Auntie as anty, and help clean up.

    Any other tips?

Many long comments and much angst. If I could pick only one comment lift for the day:

    Comment from: EricH [Visitor]

ASSISTANT: Herm, you said you were going to buy a fridge?

HERM: Yes, if I wanted to buy a fridge tomorrow, I could buy four fridges tomorrow. Don’t worry it’s no problem.

ASSISTANT: So what are you waiting for?

HERM: I’m waiting for Costco to have a 30% off deal on fridges. It’s a marquee fridge, and we’d be saving a lot of money.

    ONE MONTH LATER

ASSISTANT: Herm, have you bought the fridge yet?

HERM: Yes, I’m getting on that. I’m talking to the manager of Costco and he assured me the fridge is going to be sold to me in just a week or so. Don’t worry, it’s still a really good fridge with two ice makers.

    ONE MONTH LATER

    ASSISTANT: Herm, where’s the fridge?

HERM: Well, Costco doesn’t have the fridge, so they’re in talks with Sam’s club to do an exchange. They’re going to send over a BBQ grill for a fridge, which they’ll then sell to me. So I’m just waiting on the Sam’s club manager to do the exchange, so it’ll be a week.

    ONE MONTH LATER

ASSISTANT: Herm, I’m serious, we really need a fridge.

HERM: Right, no worries, I have my eye on this great cooler at Longs. It’s only 20 bucks, but I think it’s worth it and it’s just like a fridge — it keeps cool air in it.

    ONE MONTH LATER

ASSISTANT: Herm, have you at least bought the cooler?

HERM: Yeah, it’s right behind you.

ASSISTANT: Where, I don’t see it.

    HERM RUNS AWAY.

  151. Kekoa March 20, 2011 4:41 am

Valiant effort by the BasketBows last nite. Turning point was that costly foul on the SF 3 point shooter. Leaning into the shooter…not good. Not allowing him to spot up…works for me.

Jason ~ Good to know you were able to make it to the game. My theory on the refs that miss hacking fouls, is for them to be hacked just one time. Across the bridge of their nose, so they can nut bread!

  152. Kekoa March 20, 2011 4:51 am

Hmmm…PP’s birthday? I wonder if she realizes that I happen to be free for dinner tonite?

  153. Garret March 20, 2011 4:55 am

Very interesting article today in the Star-Advertiser. If UH keeps PPV, it looks like UH will get nothing from the MWC’s national TV deal. So, UH will keep PPV like now, but the difference is that UH won’t have ESPN or the $400k that WAC teams have been getting (or the $1.3 mil that MWC teams have been getting).

If PPV gets everything, then Oceanic will own all of UH’s TV rights. That means that mainland fans will not have ESP3 or ESPN GamePlan to follow the games, and Dish or DirecTV fans of UH even in Hawaii will be unable to see UH play. That exclusivity will be worth a lot to Oceanic…but UH will get less money than they get now and many fans will lose access to the games.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/sportsnews/20110320_Mountain_West_will_help_UH_keep_pay_per_view_deal.html

  154. Garret March 20, 2011 4:59 am

ESPN3, not “ESP3”. Typing with my left hand while holding my daughter (who just woke up) with my right hand is hard.

I will enjoy being able to watch UH for free on ESPN3 on my computer and see the replays on my phone anytime I want. That will be the last year I get to do that…Oceanic will put up walls to make everyone subscribe to their UH package and mainland fans will be out of luck just like how we can’t get PPV now on our phones and the streaming to computers isn’t as reliable as I’d like.

  155. 808ike March 20, 2011 5:52 am

    Garret #154,

    Ditto.

In business, it is called MONOPOLY.

  156. mctruck March 20, 2011 5:52 am

    Garret, ur 153/154….

Glad you are claifying that scenario(s), I thought I was not understanding the game plan?!

I don’t like the smell of what is coming down; it seems to me that the powers-that-be at UH is trying to keep past business relationships with local ties and in doing so,(not trusting the MWC-brain-trust), are on a verge on committing financial suicide?!

It seems to me that the MWC are trying to cover ALL bases and Oceanic are trying to do the same, and the loser will be UH. I think somebody(s) at UH better wake-up before everything turns to, kaka!!!

  157. Garret March 20, 2011 5:56 am

    mctruck,

The alternative for UH is to get $1 mil or so from the MWC’s TV deal (UH wouldn’t get a full $1.3 mil share because basketball and the other sports would not be included) and give up the $2.4 mil from PPV. So, UH isn’t committing “financial suicide”, they come out ahead with PPV than with the MWC TV deal.

  158. 808ike March 20, 2011 6:08 am

Instead of expanding UH fan base, Oceanic will shrink it because the only way to watch UH sports is through them AT THEIR PRICE!

  159. d1shima March 20, 2011 6:17 am

    Great Morning All!

    Happy Birthday PowderPuff!

    (Hope you’re feeling better.)

  160. d1shima March 20, 2011 6:26 am

    One Guard shy last night.

USF’s strategy was clear last night. Exploit Hawaii’s Achilles….lack of depth. Free subs eventually wore the BasketBows down.

Once they decided to have #45 take it straight at Miah in the 2nd half it was tough to watch the guy get beat to spots simply because he was outta gas.

Still, it took them almost all of 39:58 to do it and the ‘Bows really took it to a team that had slugged it out with Gonzaga thruout the year…hopefully, a good sign of this to come.

Hold your heads high, Gentlemen. The future looks bright.

  161. 808ike March 20, 2011 6:27 am

I trust you with whatever direction you say UH should go, seeing how I’m not that akamai in financial whatchamacallits?,…U-da-Man!!, thanks.

    d1shima,

gald UH recruited what?, a couple more guards coming in next year. Still think they need that big man in the middle who can defend/score.

  165. gigi-hawaii March 20, 2011 6:40 am

    Thanks, RedZone!

    Thanks, Tom!

Another morning, another day. Good morning, Tsaikos!

  166. mctruck March 20, 2011 6:40 am

What really concerns me is the possibility of UH fans on the Main-island(continent) not being able to que-into any UH sports…mainly, football events?!! bombers/bummers, big-time!!

  167. d1shima March 20, 2011 6:45 am

    mctruck,

Guard play always helps in postseason. That said, Amis’ inside defense will be tough to replace; he’s not a “monster in the middle” kinda guy but plays really smart inside and has a knack for knowing when to defend an inlet pass.

  168. d1shima March 20, 2011 6:46 am

Anoddah blustery day in Hawaii Nei. Take care erryboddy!

    HiHo…

  169. Kekoa March 20, 2011 6:48 am

    Garret ~

With all this talk of PPV and cable systems gearing up to take more money from us. The industry is squeezing the life outta viewing college sports. Greed is a terrible thing.

If watching from home gets more expensive, there’s always the Sports Bars. In a pinch…I can always go back to wearing my Walkman and listening to the game while doing something else.

  170. mctruck March 20, 2011 6:50 am

    d1shima, ur #167….amen to that.

with that said….thanks Mr. Amis for representing UH., and to those who stuck with the program, maholo.

  171. mctruck March 20, 2011 6:52 am

    Kekoa,

I’m with you on that thought; greed, greed, greed!!!

  172. gigi-hawaii March 20, 2011 6:58 am

Hubby and I were overjoyed the game was shown on OC16, because the picture was in HD. We loved the clarity and size of the picture.

Hubby said that it was so much better than K5.

  173. mctruck March 20, 2011 6:59 am

808ike, ur #155….It seems to me, especially this season when speaking bout “monopoly”..it looks like ESPN was trying real hard to monopolize everything under their umbrella, or was that just my perception???

  174. mctruck March 20, 2011 7:01 am

well, gotta go prepare some brunch……have a greatday folks, out!!

  175. Garret March 20, 2011 7:05 am

UH wasn’t satisfied with the money that it had under the old K5 deal with the same-day free replays and no PPV.

The next TV deal got UH more money, with K5 having the TV rights and Oceanic handling PPV.

The next TV deal got UH even more money, but Oceanic owns everything.

*UH* wanted more money. *UH* could have chosen to take K5’s offer, even if it was a little less, but UH needs the money.

Having mainland fans being able to see UH’s game was *not* more important to UH than getting more money. So, why are we blaming cable systems for their greed? They are just getting what *UH* chose to sell them.

UH could have demanded that Oceanic sell PPV to Hawaii residents who have Dish or DirecTV. But that would have meant that UH would get less money, so UH never demanded that. Why blame a company for getting what it is paying for?

  176. Rasu Begasu March 20, 2011 7:08 am

    MIH,

    If nobody answered your question

Peters is playing Rugby for the USA Rugby Sevens

    and a possible Olympic player.

They were in town last month, but I wasn’t about to spend $65 to watch rugby

  177. Garret March 20, 2011 7:08 am

UH has a huge Athletic Department deficit, so UH needs to maximize its revenue. Is it greed if UH is going what it has to do to keep its Athletic Department going?

What if we end PPV…and none of those football road games are shown in Hawaii except for those on the mtn channel? Time Warner doesn’t like the mtn network, so *none* of the UH fans may be able to see UH games except those who have DirecTV.

  178. Garret March 20, 2011 7:13 am

Note in the Star-Advertiser article that the MWC will “try” to have UH keep its PPV. What happens if Comcast says no PPV. Then, PPV will be gone and UH will be a regular TV member of the MWC.

In that case, most UH games would be on the mtn network. Only DirecTV subscribers can get that right now in Hawaii and many other Time Warner markets with MWC teams (like TCU for all those years, SDSU, and others) have *not* gotten the mtn network.

So, if the MWC isn’t able to let UH keep its PPV deal, this will probably happen:

    1. TV revenues for UH will go from $3 mil this year to between $1 mil and $1.3 mil. That is $2 mil gone!

    2. UH fans in Hawaii won’t get to see most UH football games unless they get DirecTV and subscribe to an expensive package that has the mtn, CBS CS, and VS.

    3. NO STREAMING VIDEO of UH games, since the mtn network owns the TV and streaming rights.

So, for those who are complaining about the MWC letting UH keep PPV…the MWC *not* letting UH keep PPV is much, much worse!

  179. gigi-hawaii March 20, 2011 7:23 am

    Garret,

If that were to happen, I believe hubby would switch from Oceanic to DirectTV in a heartbeat. We love our UH Warriors!

  180. gigi-hawaii March 20, 2011 7:25 am

BTW, is DirectTV shown in HD, like Oceanic?

  181. Garret March 20, 2011 7:36 am

All MWC games are shown in HD on the mtn. For subscribers that get it, that means that even nonrevenue sports like softball are in HD.

  182. gigi-hawaii March 20, 2011 7:39 am

    Garret,

bring it on, then! As I said before, HDTV is so much better than what K5 has to offer.

  183. Lanaiboy March 20, 2011 7:42 am

Lori Santi is also the long-time commentator for Wahine basketball—she’s been there forever. I always liked her; she works well with Jim Leahy in both basketball and softball. She is knowledgeable and a capable broadcaster. I must admit though that not having Artie Wilson is unsettling. He is an institution for men’s basketball telecasts, like losing a favorite and comfortable seat cushion.

    RIP Drew Hill.

  193. Kekoa March 20, 2011 8:39 am

Garret ~ I understand that it takes money to invest in broadcasting these events. The greed comes in squeezing so much for the subscription.

A few years ago, I could purchase a single UH game from HawTel for $9.99. It was great for me at the time. No commercials, no hype…just the game.

All I’m sayin’ is, let’s go easy on the fans. Why gouge people? People will pay a fair price for a fair package. Right now, there’s not much choice.

The average joe doesn’t care who or what happens behind the scenes. Just give him a fair choice of options. Gigi prefers to watch it on her big screen,

    Ragun’-Cajun-3D-HD-TV…and she’s willing to pay – great!

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  197. H20 March 20, 2011 12:01 pm

#196 can’t even spam right. Microsoft announced last week they won’t be making Zune players anymore.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
