Special attention

It is a credit to special teams and the defensive secondary that Damien Packer and Josh Donovan will go on scholarship beginning this summer.

Packer and Donovan — similar to Mike Martin, who earlier had been promised a scholarship — earned their way first as special-team players and then as safeties. Further back, each attracted attention with their scout-team work.

One of UH’s inspirational placards is: Work like nobody’s watching.

Well, they are watching. Every play of every practice is recorded on video. For a walk-on, the reward is a scholarship.

Offensive line coach Chris Naeole and intern Ed Ta‘amu departed yesterday to American Samoa to evaluate prospects. That means meeting with counselors and coaches.

Because the Rainbow Warriors still have a vacancy on the coaching staff, Ta‘amu took the recruiting test and has been authorized as an interim recruiter.

Quarterback Jeremy Higgins said he played the final two quarters of Saturday’s scrimmage despite suffering an injury to his left (push-off) foot. Higgins’ foot was heavily wrapped after the scrimmage. Yesterday, he was walking with a noticeable limp. He should be ready when the Warriors begin their summer conditioning program in four weeks.

It’s been pointed out that renewal forms for season tickets are arriving in the mail.
No doubt, there will be a future story that ticket renewals are down. Just remember: Ticket renewals can’t increase. If you bought 10 tickets last year, you can’t renew 12. You can renew 10 and buy two new ones, however.

  6. d1shima April 29, 2014 8:13 am

    Great Morning All!

    Safe travels for the Coaches.

  7. papajoe2 April 29, 2014 8:13 am

It’s great that we are back in American Samoa recruiting.
While briefly in Fiji last month, I noticed the average Fijian had good size. No football in Fiji?

  8. d1shima April 29, 2014 8:14 am

Got my renewal package in the mail on Saturday.

Thought it was well-timed to coincide widda Spring Fling Ting…

  9. tommui April 29, 2014 8:18 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

I think we had a player from Fiji years back – or was he of Fijian descent?

And we had a couple of guys with Tongan descent too!

  10. Stephen Tsai April 29, 2014 8:19 am

Volleyball middle blocker Taylor Averill will go to Chicago to be honored for being named to the All-America first team.

  11. kifi April 29, 2014 8:19 am

Ed Ta’amu? Is that Judge Uale’s son-in-law? I may be mistaken. Wish them luck in American Samoa. Wish we could send them to Apia, and Aotearoa also.

  12. d1shima April 29, 2014 8:20 am

OK. He’s banned and they will force him out.

    Move on…

  13. Stephen Tsai April 29, 2014 8:20 am

It’s all about location, location, location.
I thought UH should have put the concession stand near the entrance for the Spring Fling.

  14. Stephen Tsai April 29, 2014 8:25 am

I keep forgetting how much football has progressed in Samoa.
We had a discussion about football there, and Penitito Faalologo gave me one of those weird looks.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

maybe the sign should read…”Work like the Tsaikos are Watching YOU”…no slack..

ST…before going into Ching Field, I went up to see if L&L was open because I didn’t see any concession at the entrance. Wasn’t until I was a couple of guys struggling with a stack of warmers that almost fell over, that I knew there was a concession tent at the far Diamond Head end. They really good about being invisible.

finally…reports of Dennis Kamakahi passing…prayers for him and his family.

  18. tommui April 29, 2014 9:05 am

Senior moment – I remember UH had a player from Aotearoa – played line and went up to the NFL.

Like Boolakanaka, I love Aotearoa – shame that earthquakes had ravaged the South Island, esp at Christchurch. The Cathedral there was totally wiped out.

  19. boolakanaka April 29, 2014 9:26 am

Judge let me put on my thinking cap on that one, I do know that Riki Ellison, previous of the 49ers, was Maori and from Christchurch.

  20. jm2375 April 29, 2014 9:42 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Congratulations to JD2 and Damien Packer.

Thank you, Mr. Fotu, for returning next season. Work hard and get that degree!

    GO WAHINE!
    GO WARRIORS!

Please say a prayer for Jared Leaf who underwent his first surgery this afternoon. Hope he doesn’t have too long a road to recovery.

Nice to see that Fotu is returning to UH MBB!

Congrats to Damien Packer & Josh Donovan on receiving scholarships this year!

Aloha stadium parking dropping by 1040 spaces (kam lot) for 2 years due to rail construction according to SA. The report says that is 13% of all parking & season ticket holders can bid for parking starting 5 May and total spaces available for bid will be same as last year with some added Upper Halawa lot spots. $500 for inner circle & $400 for Koa/Upper Halawa starts the bidding; http://www.staradvertiser.com/sportspremium/sportsnewspremium/20140429_UHseasonticket_holders_can_bid_on_parking_stalls.html?id=257122071

Coach Ta’amu is former Iolani product??? If so he should have some good Oline experience to help Coach Naeole. Had couple stints in the NFL no???

  36. oneseason April 29, 2014 1:53 pm

Online renewal of Rainbow Warrior Football season tickets is also available at http://www.etickethawaii.com/Renewal/hawaii_football.html

  37. jimmy the lock April 29, 2014 2:34 pm

The players are on their own training regimen till the summer conditioning program? Who’s motivated, who wants it, who is up to the task?

Congrats to the future schollie players.

Looking forward to reading the Samoa evaluation report.

    Speaking about renewal…car registration…arrrghhhhh.

Damn, safety check got more expensive and more stringent. Before they would look at the tires and walk around the car. Now they check the tires, walk around the car, press the brake pedal, and take a picture. No wonder more expensive.

  38. marleysdad April 29, 2014 2:36 pm

Did mine online & saved 5 bux.

  39. oneseason April 29, 2014 2:49 pm

18,194 is the number (last year’s total) to beat … UH Football season ticket sales are really not that far from the top of the Mountain West conference, especially when the declines of the last 3 years are considered. http://blogs.rgj.com/chrismurray/2013/09/07/wolf-pack-season-tickets-sales-hit-record-high-yet-theres-a-lot-of-work-ahead/

  40. oneseason April 29, 2014 2:55 pm

UH Football attendance also isn’t looking too bad relative to the Mountain West conference. So it’s not like we don’t have the gross ticket receipts to build a quality program. It seems there is a missing link in the calculus. http://www.mwcconnection.com/football-5/2013/5/8/4310988/2013-mountain-west-football-attendance-in-question

  41. ALLAN April 29, 2014 4:00 pm

WE HAD A FIJIAN PLACE KICKER DURING LATE 60s EARLY 70s. WJP [ASSED ON A WHILE BACK. I USED TO SEE HIM PRACTICING BY HIMSELF WHEN I USE TO WATCH PRACTICE FROM THE SIDELINES WEEKDAY AFTERNOONS. NICE QUIET GUY, KEPT TO HIMSELF, PROBABLY BCOZ HE HAD NO ONE TO TALK TO.

B.U.T…HE PROBLY HAS GONE DOWN IN NCAA HISTORY, IF NOT IN ALL OF FOOTBALL AS THE ONLY EXTRA POINT KICKER EVER TO BE TOSSED OUT OF A GAME FOR KICKING AN OPPONENT AFTER AN E.P.. TRY.

  42. smallkahuna April 29, 2014 4:22 pm

Looking at the breakdown of the MWC attendance chart, SJSU has a season ticket of 2200 with a 8million population. It came out to 0%. I had to kind of chuckle. O% of the population watch you play is like nobody who lives in that area is showing up. The fans must be made up primarily of visiting fans.

That would be an alarming number to say the least.

  43. whitey April 29, 2014 5:06 pm

#37. only one state requires safety inspection. all the other states did away with it because it serves no purpose.

  44. 1984guerra April 29, 2014 5:16 pm

who (what position) is the vacancy on the staff?

40…do the math. uh don’t own the stadium, in fact they pay rental fees. do not have any concession money, etc.

we must be the only state that does that to a state run program.

and four years ago neil said one of the first things he’d do as governor was to give the stadium to the university.

    …nuff said

  50. ALLAN April 30, 2014 12:12 am

    46. MY TYPO ERROR. HE PASSED AWAY A WHILE AGO. HE PLAYED AT OLD HONOLULU STADIUM ON KING ST. PRETTY STEADY E.P. KICKER, BUT DURING ONE GAME, WHEN UH OFFENSE WAS OVERPOWERING DA ODDA GUYS, AFTER THEY SCORED, SOMEBODY BLOCKED HIS KICK; ONE MINUTE LATER, UH WOUND UP SCORING AGAIN! ANUDDA GUY BLOCKED HIS ATTEMPT AGAIN, GOT UP, AND RAN OFF THE FIELD…SO, WILSON FATAFEHI KICKED ANOTHER OPPONENT WHO WAS STILL LYING ON THE GROUND NEAR HIS FOOT.

  54. Shoko April 30, 2014 7:06 am

Yet another reason why student-athletes should be paid the full cost of attendance. When a player can’t afford to buy crab legs, lobsters and filet mignon something is just not right in college athletics.

“Tomahawknation.com reported that Winston was given a citation for shoplifting crab legs. The site did not attribute the report. Leon County Sheriff public records clerk Anita Muellei told USA TODAY Sports the “case was still being processed.”
