Sons of a beach

It’s Wednesday, which means while you were still wiping the makapiapia, the Warriors were working out at Waikiki Beach. Roll call was at 5:58 a.m., which meant if a player wasn’t two minutes early, he was late.

  5. tommui June 18, 2014 8:59 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

And I hope you (ST) had a nice time on the beach!

  6. PONO June 18, 2014 9:20 am

    Man Muraoka is tatted up.

  7. Old School Dave June 18, 2014 9:25 am

Ah to be young, buff, and fit. I get tired just looking at the pics 🙁
Anyway, great job!! Way to work hard, Warriors!!

Looking forward to seeing Keelan Ewaliko on the field this fall.

  8. Shoko June 18, 2014 9:42 am

They moved Mageo to safety. Played LB in H.S. if not mistaken, right?

  9. SteveM June 18, 2014 9:45 am

    Good morning everyone!

Great recruiting photos for UH voluntary workouts. Need a few shots with Diamond Head in the background. 🙂

  10. jimmy the lock June 18, 2014 9:46 am

Sand and sun, work work work.

    GO CHILE!

There would be scores of jokes if them were Tsaikos on the beach.

  11. 3-Prong June 18, 2014 9:48 am

Like the commercial says…..Hard Work Work.

  12. Stephen Tsai June 18, 2014 10:06 am

    Shoko:
I didn’t recognize him at first. He cut his long hair.

    SteveM:
It’s hard to get good lighting with my little iPhone.

  14. jimmy the lock June 18, 2014 10:13 am

Hope I’m not speaking too soon but Chile is too spicy and Spain is going down the toilet.

ST, is swimming part of the players conditioning routine? May need to use some floatees or noodles.

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid June 18, 2014 10:18 am

    Sand crawls? Oh my…

The blog host could have worse gigs I reckon – what other reporter can claim Waikiki Beach as his beat? Mr. Tsai, have you asked any of the Warriors which venue is the toughest for workouts?

The Warriors are looking good – can’t wait til fall camp!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  16. nutmegger June 18, 2014 10:43 am

The Waikiki beach venue is great marketing for UH Football. They need a sign to identify themselves and to be in all the photos the tourists take. All those tourists coming from the East Coast are getting up at 4 am anyway, it will give them something to do. Will a sign violate NCAA regs?

  17. Stephen Tsai June 18, 2014 11:15 am

A woman walks by and decides to watch practice. It turns out her 16-year-old son is a football player. His name is Zach Adams. He’s 6-7 and 280.

  18. 808bowler June 18, 2014 11:20 am

St did I see u at the movies last night?

  19. SteveM June 18, 2014 11:31 am

    RE: #12
    ST — here’s a good 5 minute video on the camera…
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C0BwBUaQ6Y

I do not think HDR is the solution, though, since you take action shots.

  20. jalansky June 18, 2014 11:33 am

Do they jump in the water at any point?

  21. Kapahulu June 18, 2014 11:45 am

    #16,
If cannot use a sign, some UH Beach Towels might help.
Could always have each player wear a pair of UH Shorts!

  22. tanman June 18, 2014 11:50 am

We are smaller in size but may be we can use crab craw to move those bigger guys… ha ha! I don’t know, may be the Warriors should learn Tai Chi! Tai Chi’s principle is to move large/heavy objects with minimum efforts so they do not need to be big. Yeah, may be all Rainbow Warriors should learn Tai Chi and Wrestling! Most of all, our players have heart and it carries them a long way!!

  23. tanman June 18, 2014 11:52 am

Just park the UH bus in front of the beach. I hope we are no going to hear the tourists or the homeless people complain about noise.

  24. Stephen Tsai June 18, 2014 12:12 pm

    UH has a bus?

  25. Turfwar June 18, 2014 12:29 pm

#17 ST is he the Leilehua guy who was seen observing during the spring?

  26. nutmegger June 18, 2014 1:34 pm

H-Zone could get a wagon with the logo, etc. and sell UH t-shirts in front of the beach when they are practicing. Could bring the wagon to the stadium for games, to surf tournaments, eat the street, etc.

  27. Stephen Tsai June 18, 2014 2:24 pm

    Turfwar:
No, this woman was a pilot from Virginia. Her son wasn’t with her. Apparently this Zach Adams is an offensive lineman who already has an offer from that university in Austin. Hook ’em, Horns.

  28. Stephen Tsai June 18, 2014 2:25 pm

Nope, that wasn’t me at the movies yesterday.
I was taking a power nap yesterday evening.
Is it a nap, by the way, if it exceeds three hours and a bathroom break?

  29. A-House June 18, 2014 2:44 pm

    ST:

lousy photo conditions, but excellent shots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

also, UH can still offer? yes? no other college/university can lay claim to “beach workout” at Waikiki Beach!

  30. hatakeman June 18, 2014 3:01 pm

Frank Lloyd Jr looks in great shape. No love handles. Pedroza is a stud. I thought he was the outstanding receiver during the Spring Fling.

  31. Stephen Tsai June 18, 2014 4:12 pm

UH can still offer scholarship agreements (which are binding for the school but not the athlete).
The trouble would be getting transfers/new signees into school.

  32. Buffoman June 18, 2014 4:25 pm

Changing a culture is difficult but it appears that change is coming. The voluntary workouts seem to be well attended and the young men appear to be serious about being in shape.

Hopefully that change continues with a positive result on the field. We were close in some games last year. I would hope that this year those “almosts” would become “Ws” for these young men.

  33. Stephen Tsai June 18, 2014 4:50 pm

    Hey, they caught the escapee.
Then again. This is an island. Where was he gonna go?

  34. Turfwar June 18, 2014 5:08 pm

Thanks ST. Yeah saw Zach’s Hudl video. Pretty impressive. Very mobile for such a big guy. Great prospect. But that Leilehua guy could turn into a pleasant surprise for the Mules this season. He also looked about 6’7″ but around 240-250.

  35. Turfwar June 18, 2014 5:13 pm

Across the street from OCCC is a zebra painted coffee lunchwagon where women in lingerie do the serving. Maybe he just wanted a latte.

  36. leron June 18, 2014 5:50 pm

#36 don’t think the escapee is into that sort of thing if you know what I mean.

  37. kapakahi June 18, 2014 5:58 pm

    #25,

The Leilehua kid looks like a TE and/or DE prospect……long, tall and lean.

  38. Ipu Man June 18, 2014 6:18 pm

Excellent photography, Tsai. And great, as usual, head line. Sons of a beach…
Go Rainbows. Now that would be a great backdrop to snap.

  39. markazulu June 18, 2014 6:29 pm

    hows taylor grahams shoulder?

  40. A-House June 18, 2014 7:58 pm

I get this phone call from a guy named Kai from the UH Foundation and assigned to the UHAD.

He says BJ wants to seriously improve/upgrade the area fronting the athletic complex using a landscape architect (gratis) and donated materials and labor to complete the project. He tells me that the “rock garden” currently in place must go – they have not decided if they will trash the entire garden or move the plants elsewhere. Current garden does not meet BJ’s criteria of “whatever”.

So I tell Kai that the garden was built for UH and all the students attending UH-Manoa and if BJ feels that it’s below his expectations that they can do whatever they want.

  41. SteveM June 18, 2014 9:36 pm

    RE:#40
A-House — I read your post with mixed reactions. One the positive side, there will be a new rock garden where there wasn’t one before. Without your efforts, what would be space be? Another positive is that you were alerted about the coming changes.

On the down side, I see Ben Jay as someone who has gotten “it” yet. Maybe someday. There are some local style attitudes and priorities that Ben Jay does not understand–that his predecessor, Jim Donovan knew and lived. But there is still hope for BJ yet.

  42. st. anthony trojan June 18, 2014 11:15 pm

whenever you see BJ in bermudas n slippas…then you know he has arrived…n finally got it…

he is a coat n tie dude from the big 10….takes time…wearing an aloha shirt….not do it…

  43. st. anthony trojan June 18, 2014 11:26 pm

A-HOUSE… what was reason for call…just a courtesy call to inform you that they will trash the rock garden you built….not understand…

  44. al June 19, 2014 12:31 am

    bj’s attire is aloha shirt.
never see him in a suit.

ahouse…no worry. everyone did appreciate your efforts. you stepped up big time.
perhaps a part of your legacy will live on somehow as the new vision arrives.
the uhad had enough respect for you to let you know first hand.

  45. tommui June 19, 2014 6:54 am

Good morning Hawaii! Will shout it out when ST posts the new one!

    Re: #44 AL’s comment.

AHouse’s effort was a labor of love and much appreciated. Thank you Gil.
