USC releases depth chart
USC released its depth chart for the UH game.
Here’s the link: USC depth chart.
What’s interesting is that next to each name is the player’s Twitter account.

UH announces that the cheerleaders will be going to this week’s road game against USC.
Good first step. But how about the band?
Here’s a video of the Warriors and the band from this week: UH fight song video.
* * * * *
Bill Stutzmann sends us this picture of his son Billy Ray Stutzmann (bottom center) and the extended family (bottom: Joey Cadiz, Craig Cofer; top: Iuta Tepa, George Daily-Lyles.)
Topping the Warriors’s wish list: A time machine. The coaches are gushing over the play of Tepa, who transferred from UCLA and must redshirt this season. They’re looking for a way to move 2013 into this Saturday.
* * * * *
Billy Ray Stutzmann is back to being a No. 1 receiver, but at which spot? Scott Harding is No. 1 at the Z (strong-side receiver). But when Harding needs a break, Stutzmann will move from the X (single side) to the Z. Trevor Davis has rebounded from ailments and will be used in tandem with Stutzmann.

Top 10!!!!
The University of Hawaii’s handling of a botched Stevie Wonder benefit concert and its fallout made a bad situation worse, tarnished the institution’s image and left the public raising questions about the credibility of UH leaders, according to several legislators and onlookers.
A number of state lawmakers said there could be long-term consequences from the fiasco, and the university will no doubt have to explain its decisions in the upcoming legislative session.
Some have suggested the situation could bode poorly for UH when it heads to the Legislature asking that funding cuts be restored; others say the debacle could hamper UH fundraising efforts.
“This is definitely going to have a long-lasting effect all the way around for the university,” said state Rep. James Tokioka (D, Wailua-Koloa), one of nine neighbor island legislators who expressed concern about the university’s handling of the concert fallout in a letter to the Board of Regents on Wednesday. The UH president and BOR, he said, “need to look in the mirror and say, ‘What responsibility did we have for this?'”
State Rep. Mark Takai (D, Newtown-Pearl City), who has been highly critical of the university’s decision to reassign UH athletic director Jim Donovan in the wake of the concert mess, said UH’s handling of the canceled concert has left many calling for more transparency.
“Mishandling might be too kind a word,” Takai said of the university’s response. “They’re spinning this thing and a lot of people are getting dizzy. It’s like they think we’re dumb.”
What is being described as a major image problem comes as UH pours new energy into systemwide public relations efforts, expanding online video content and its social media presence as part of a public relations overhaul that spurred several high-profile hires earlier this year.
Given the new initiative, some UH watchers were taken aback after several episodes in recent weeks that appeared to show a university unsure of how to tackle a growing crisis. In one example, on Aug. 13, UH-Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple held a news conference in which he praised Donovan highly for his performance as athletic director while outlining Donovan’s reassignment to a yet-to-be-named position.
“The bottom line is they just come across looking incompetent,” said Robert Cooney, past chairman of the UH-Manoa Faculty Senate.
After a more than seven-hour closed-door Board of Regents session Wednesday, UH President M.R.C. Greenwood acknowledged that UH could have handled fallout from the bungled concert better, including by being more open about what UH knew and how it would proceed.
“I do believe we made mistakes in communicating the situation we were in and the issues we were facing,” she said. “We are very, very sorry. This has been a really bad episode for the University of Hawaii, our fans and for the public.”
But Greenwood also emphasized that UH appears to have been a victim of a $200,000 fraud in the ill-fated concert, planned for Aug. 18. And she defended the decision to put Donovan on leave and subsequently reassign him as part of a settlement agreement — actions the regents also supported.
“We made mistakes, but good people made mistakes. We can’t ignore these mistakes because it did endanger the institution, but we have to go back and say, ‘How could this have happened and what could we change so that it can’t happen again?'” she said.
The planned wonder concert was canceled July 10, a day after representatives of the singer told UH that he had not been scheduled to appear at the benefit. The FBI is investigating the whereabouts of $200,000 in UH money wired as a deposit for the event.
In the wake of the concert’s cancellation, UH put Donovan and Stan Sheriff Center manager Rich Sheriff on administrative leave. Four weeks later, UH cleared Sheriff and Donovan of wrongdoing and said Sheriff was to be reinstated while Donovan was to be reassigned. The reassignment set off a new wave of anger, with several legislators questioning why Donovan was being moved if he did nothing wrong. Donovan’s athletic director contract expires March 23.
In a scathing July 16 letter, Donovan attorney David Simons accused UH of scapegoating the former athletic director and sullying his reputation. In an Aug. 11 response, which Greenwood described as a “settlement,” Apple outlined Donovan’s reassignment to a position where he will earn $211,200 a year under a three-year contract. In accepting the deal, Donovan agreed not to sue. UH also paid attorney’s fees for Donovan, which totaled $30,000.
Greenwood said Wednesday that Donovan’s working — but not final — title is “director of external affairs and community relations.” His duties have been described as including marketing and communications.
The creation of the position, which at least in part is tied to the public relations arm at UH, has raised additional questions about how the university can justify the high-paid job even as it continues to tighten its belt in other ways. It is also shining a spotlight on the overhaul of a UH function that prefers to be behind the story.
Earlier this year, as part of a redesign of its system-level public relations operations, UH hired three former TV news people — two former journalists and a videographer. The overhaul is aimed at better telling the university’s story through online video and social media.
Hired were: former TV reporter and state Department of Transportation spokesman Dan Meisenzahl, who was named director of media production (with annual pay of $103,584); former KITV television anchor and reporter Jodi Leong, director of communications (with a pay range of $54,528-$138,288); and videographer Cliff Watson (with a pay range of $44,724-$113,000)
Lynne Waters, associate vice president of UH external affairs and university relations and also a former TV reporter, argues the overhaul has ultimately saved money at the system level, has redirected resources to video and digital platforms and has allowed for better communication among public relations offices across campuses.
It’s unclear whether Donovan will have any role in the revamped public relations operations.
But Takai and other legislators said UH will have to eventually justify the creation of Donovan’s position — and make clear how it fits in with other efforts to beef up the university’s marketing arm. Takai, a member of the House Higher Education Committee who has criticized the university’s spending on administrative positions, said Donovan’s new job raises many questions, not least of which is whether the position is actually needed.
“It’s still not clear what it is,” he said.
He added, “There was no advertising of the position … no search process or screening process. For a position that pays that much money, you would expect the university would do that.”
Sen. Jill Tokuda, chairwoman of the Senate Education Committee, agreed that the university will need to explain why the new position was necessary.
“When it comes to the creation of positions, the main question for the Legislature is, ‘Are you going to be able to sustain it from a funding perspective?'” she said. “They are going to have to, like every other department every year, justify financial decisions that were made and how that fits into the overall budget picture.”
The UH faculty union said it is concerned the handling of the Wonder concert and Donovan’s reassignment will spur “legislative scrutiny of all UH funding,” which could ultimately hurt students and faculty.
“The long-term implications of when we have incidents like this is a loss of confidence in the leadership and management of the institution,” said Kristeen Hanselman, associate executive director of the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly.
Tokuda also said that perhaps the biggest tragedy of the concert fiasco is it has diverted attention from the big gains UH has made in improving access and boosting graduation rates.
“For all the gains they made, it’s the stumbles that are noted,” she said.
In this case, UH is not only dealing with an embarrassing series of mistakes that led up to the failed benefit, but with a host of people who are angry, concerned or disappointed over how university administrators dealt with the situation.
“They have made it very hard for those of us who love the university to defend it,” said Kem Lowry, UH professor emeritus in urban and regional planning, adding that he was especially concerned with the university’s lack of transparency after the failed concert.
Lowry also said Greenwood’s admission on Wednesday that “mistakes were made” was too little, too late. “If they would have done that very quickly, if someone had taken responsibility … I think they would have had a lot more credibility,” he said.
The image problem, he added, could be bad for the “kind of support we need for our instructional activities and everything else.”
Cooney, who remains on the executive committee of Manoa’s Faculty Senate, said the situation has also reignited questions about who is leading UH-Manoa — the chancellor or the system president.
Cooney added that in the wake of the debacle, there appears to be a lack of accountability among UH leadership. “If I make a mistake, you can bet they’re going to hold me accountable,” he said.
Thomas Mui, a Honolulu attorney who in recent years has helped clients donate big sums to athletics programs, fears the Wonder concert and its fallout have soured lawmakers’ perceptions of UH.
He said he hopes the concert mess won’t deter future private donations to UH athletics. Still, he said of UH, “I wish they would get their act together.”
Me thinks the Tsaikos would operate UH better than the “Clowns in the Valley.”
Wonderful article in the online edition by Mary Vorsino.
My Father said, “Tell the Truth all the time, and you don’t need to worry about your reputation.” “If you don’t tell the truth, you better have a good memory.”
AlaWai:
If you’re going to tell a lie, always tell the same lie.
Did I mention I invented the stapler?
Kudos to this coaching staff. They are doing what they said they would do in terms of recruiting and if they have a good showing this year, more top talent will want to play. Then the team will be competitive in the MWC for years to come. Go Warriors! Make it an interesting game and put the curse of poor performances on National TV away for good.
Thomas Mui helped pushe a donation worth over $800,000.00 to Rainbow Wahine volleyball, basketball, and softball.
This is 800,000.00 more DIRECTLY to the programs only than….
Nevermind, Im talking too much for the liking of some.

#22 – Well if you don’t have enough I can give you a few more.
I may be dating myself but Fujio Matsuda – where are you? How about his clone to replace the tyrant Greenwood who should resign immediately.
I’m not sure what an artificial surface is supposed to look like after a few years, but I don’t think it should look like the Ching complex’s field. First, there are track marks from what I suppose are trucks working on the construction project. But mostly the blades are receding. It look like the Joker’s balding head.
Anybody else know about turf lifespans?
Really nice to see the Stutzmann family’s aloha.
http://www.e-hawaii.com/lyrics/university-of-hawaii-fight-song
ok. gonna practice da singing 😀
If I had to pick my dream final for saturday it would be UH 24 – USC 21.
No. 25:
That would make an interesting match.com ad: Interested in dating myself.
But, obachan, you do make an excellent point. Fuj Matsuda and his peeps were able to get the state to pick up most of the tab.
I remember several years ago, when president Mortimer was asked to increase the school’s fundraising, the question was: If UH raised more money, would the state promise it wouldn’t cut funding to UH proportionately? The answer, from the then-governor, was “we’ll see.” Which translated to: Raise more, cut more.
The Wonder mess was all about money, or lack of.
has it been that long since the Ching went in? don’t think so.
sis-boom-bah? . . . I don’t get it. Are those cheerleader noises or something?
BigHilo:
They practiced at Ching the past two days to give the grass field a rest.
I’m not sure what that means.
Sis is the air draining from the tire.
Boom is when the car skids and hits the fire hydrant.
“Bah” is what you say when GEICO insists your deductible is $1,000.
I would have used “Go bananas,” but I wasn’t really sure of the, um, mental state of some readers.
Don’t artificial surfaces require some sort of regular maintenance? Has that been getting done?
Question: What costs more? Buying, installing, maintaining, and then eventually replacing, buying, and maintaining a new one . . . only to repeat and repeat? Or installing and maintaining a natural surface? (not a sarcastic question, I’m being serious)
I recall when JJ pushed for the natural grass practice field, there was some expert who maintained it. Does that continue?
Five questions in one post?
Somebody challenging IWWTHM’s record?
Read you loud & clear, ST.
I guess it helps to have an artificial practice surface to practice on when you play games on one though, huh?
Not to mention rainy days, to protect the grass from being torn up.
IWWTHM’s record?
Was it along the lines of:
Is Forcier coming? When can Forcier come? Is Mack going to speak with Forcier? Anyone else think Forcier is our future? Is Forcier coming?
I guess that post is meant for someone with all the answers. I know that person must be out there?
What costs more is having to re-do when periodic maintenance is not done.
Inflation… builds when things are quoted.
AlaWai:
Oh, that’s one of those things I post in case somebody asks why I didn’t post it.
It’s sort of like those warnings about cutting the label off mattresses.
Whatever happened to Forcier?
Generally-speaking of course. Dunno why Ching Field looks the way it does. Just saying in general terms that when periodic maintenance is not done and corners are cut, you will pay more in the long run especially when the optimal word is “LONG” when it comes to how “long” will it take to get something done.
However, one should feel relieved that the Ching Field will receive more attention to detail faster than other areas of concern that have safety issues. Probably won’t need to email legislators with regards to Ching Field.
Just to be clear, I agree with most of you. Except for the ones with whom I don’t agree.
(I’m practicing to be a highly paid UH spokesman.)
I imagine those salaries are more than what their TV gigs were paying them.
At least the Ching people knew the correct way to wire a $5 million donation …
Just found out that I will miss the season opener against USC. I don’t think my daughter’s dance instructor is a UH fan.
NOT happy!
ST
you heard yet if AD going LA?
are you sworn to secrecy even if you knew?
Sending the cheerleaders to USC seems like a waste of time and money.
Oh wait I forgot, wasting time and money is what they do best.
RE: the photo above
Anyone think that’s Governor Ariyoshi or that samurai movie star?
…you see what it was like trying to sort and verify these pix…? 😆
ST . . . if you change your name to Kevin, the three of us can take over the world!
ST, i too am worried about the turf’s lifespan. So many high schools are having sturf installed. What about when it wares out? It then becomes dangerous. Since we are afraid ow lawsuits from such, the fields will probably be shut down. With the legislature system being so slow, and the state hurting for money, it may take a few years to appropriate funding to install a new turf. In the meantime, teams will not be allowed to practice there or have games at their high school.
well, when you don’t have a mascot to send, you have to send some kind of representative to cheer on your team.
It would be like trying to get a Google user name. I think I would be assigned Kev-629.
and you want to know the hilarious part about all this upper campus blame it on the lower campus shibai? like say, if I was a pro football player retired, and i had gotten a contract that would pay me millions back in the day, i wooda relied on my lawyers to help me out with the paperwork, make sure i woodn’t get scammed.
MRC Greenwood neva mention any ah dat when she was trying to blame da SSC PR guy and da UHAD guy for missin da boat, but we gonna let bygones be bygones, not blame us, we gonna learn from that, yada ya.
That Mililani field looks really good.
I always thought Oceanic should build a 5,000-seat stadium that could double as an outdoor television studio.
PPJ2,
Im going to private message you on Facebook.
What the whole mess will come down to is not if UH was scammed, but if UH folks did anything improper in getting the money that was sent.
It should be an easy paper trail, unless the trail had a detour or two.
Sometimes I wonder if upper campus wished that there was no football team.
61.
bingo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111111111111
you know das where da Legslature gonna go… show me what account da money from UH wen come from. Todo and Akamine and Apple got some explaining for do, samoa explaining das for sure.
Face it, sports gets the most coverage.
The Wonder mess is one concern. But how many other messes/coverups are going on in other departments? It’s the serial-killer approach. There just can’t be one body.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
Looks like the guy that picks up our mail!
I originally thought that photo was one of coach Chow!!! Then when SteveM provided multiple choice answers in the 2nd round of the photo contest, I realized it had to be Tom Mui. Lol.
I wonder how many got #6 and #23 correct.

Did I already mention that the Warriors are going to “Shock the World” in six days? Oh yeah, I did…

“When you play, you’re not supposed to fear anybody,” Love it!
The economy may have been more robust (don’t really know cuz I was a clueless college student then) but when you look at how Fuj (Fudge) worked with the legislature to get things done, it is quite remarkable to see what was accomplished during his tenure. Once trust has been breached, as it has with this university administration, it is difficult to accomplish anything. This from UH’s own website:
Fujio Matsuda
1974–1984
BS 1949, Rose Polytechnic Institute; ScD 1952, MIT
The nation’s first Asian American university president used political ties to keep the budget afloat and court the legislature. During his tenure, Manoa built the Institute for Astronomy, Korean Studies Center, Marine Sciences Building, law school and library, Kahanomoku Pool and PE/athletics complex. The School of Architecture opened and West O‘ahu College became UH West O‘ahu.
1. JD got the new job when his lawyer reached a settlement with the UH.
2. UH should not have suspended JD or Rick Sheriff until the investigation was completed
3. Because the UH did suspend JD & RS, they broke their own rules – giving the general public the idea that the two were wrong-doers.
4. If you read some of the remarks still being circulating, there are quite a few people blaming JD & RS of wrong doing.
So the settlement was reached because in their anxiety to blame someone (or throw them under the bus), they suspended the two – breaking their own administrative rules and blackening the reputation of JD & RS
The Chancellor, incidentally, promised a complete and thorough investigation of this fiasco.
Did you notice in the Cades Schutte report that two people that may have been involved were never interviewed as witnesses? Guess who?
Back to the pic. Is that Guy Hagi on steroids?
Norm Chow should be da president. he motivates everybody around him. cannot say da same about Greenwood. she acts like a stealarobba. both fingers always pointing in da udda direction. might be real smart. might be a obesity expert. might be a big toodoo in da academic world. but not so good looking when it comes to looking like our fearless leader. and i’mma bettin dat da faculty peeps not soo happy with her spending habits. making them all look bad. and what is with all the PR peeps? what for?
she gotta get the students in the art department to do painting, students in the ceramics class to make things to fix the tile roofs that’re outta joint, students in engineering to fix sumtin, do sumtin. these edumacated peeps, too busy trying fo make dare nails shine when day got no substance.
good thing I got Coach Chow. Hawaii got its football. unless the UH-M screw things up samoa. bad dat kine, real real real bad.
POMAI
UH – 14
USC- 6
(Die heart UH Fan – hope burns eternal)
BTW: I think I paid around $240 as a full-time student per semester at Manoa and could get the classes I wanted. Now I pay exponentially more for my children’s tuitions at Manoa and they can’t get the classes they want. In spite of this, they just keep raising the tuition and keep paying the administrators the big bucks.
Good morning, gang!
Nice looking buncha players in the photo at the Stuzmann’s. Feeding the boys is a good thing. Thanks, Bill S.! Can’t wait to see all of them on the field. ‘Cept I don’t know all of their numbers yet.
GO WARRIORS!!!
What did you pay for UH tuition?
I have $116.25 per semester stuck in my head. Included a student activity fee for all the football, basketball games. Walked to Honolulu Stadium with old wine skin then wobbled back to UH after. Only drama was if Kapalapala Queen contest was fixed!
#61-#62. Amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn’t they use Ching Field for the first time 2009? Because of delays in getting the job done when a certain contractor contested the outcome of the bidding due to some bogus certification criteria? So the field has only been in use for 3 seasons, not counting this one.
Re: #77
AlaWai — you’re dating yourself 😆
I remember around $120 per semester too, paying in Klum gym after scrambling to pick up my course cards. I thought there was an activity book with game tickets (like high school) in those years too–around $15. Books for the semester totaled around $65. Grace’s lunch wagon was 70 cents.
I have been exploring for a little for any high quality articles or weblog posts on this sort of space . Exploring in Yahoo I eventually stumbled upon this site. Reading this info So i’m glad to convey that I have a very just right uncanny feeling I discovered exactly what I needed. I most no doubt will make certain to do not forget this web site and provides it a look on a relentless basis.
#71 – I think the reason that you suspend personnel in the case of missing money is to make sure that they do not try to cover their tracks or alter the evidence that could come to light.
Good morning!
Congrats to the Wahine on their win last night!
Nice pic of the boys.
Nice pic Counselor Mui. 😀
GO WAHINE!! Beat da bird dat sits in da tree (or whatevas)!
(Cardinal, not al’s birdies)
Re #77, 80
Tution was around $100 in my day. Course cards were at Heminway Hall. Activity book (separate fee) covered all sports events and I think the informal dances at Heminway Hall. Had Tommy Kalulukui as a PT teacher, Al Saake the MBB coach and a lot of our football players eventually became administrators in the DOE!
To get the details as to when the Ching Field turf was installed, check with Teri Wilhelm Chang’s office at 956-6178. She’s the Assistant Athletics Director – Facilities/Events
According to at old e-mail I had in my files, the contract was awarded in the summer 0f 2008, challenged within two weeks, and ultimately confirmed that fall. There was an installation ceremony in early spring of 2009 shortly before the month-long practice.
I remember going to several meetings concerning these issues plus the blessing ceremony.
The contract was awarded to the same company that installed a new field at The Les the previous off-season.
My understanding is the life of artificial turf is on average five years.
There were plenty stories in both the Advertiser and Star-Bulletin about the contract, the challenge, the award confirmation, and the ceremony.
mcb82
if you going suspend somebody for missing money, for doing a dirty, then you suspend the guys who signed the contract and who sent the missing money. UH-M neva do that, and instead “they”, who had enough knowledge to know betta, blamed peeps who neva sign any contract, and who neva wired missing money.
and these guys are supposed to be our leaders.
i’m only holding back on a full on crank is because I love football, and i no like interfere with Coach Chow, and I’m wondering how he’s taking all dis in.
MRC and Rockne neva need a law firm to tell them that JD and RS neva sign any contract or wire any money.
all they had to do was ask their staff attorney, and their fiscal officer. their staff attorney, and their fiscal officer.
the more i think about all this, the more i think what a bunch of shibai we got served.
re: staplers
Staples are the best value in America economy.
$0.64 for 5000 of them! Its awesome!
Go Lydia Ko!

MCB #82
“”there was a clear policy in place at the UH implemented by UH’s HR and legal department which required that, when people were placed on leave pending investigation, that no information would be made public about the matter until an investigation had been completed. That policy expressly recognized that if the UH publicly disclosed that a person had been placed on leave pending investigation, that that information would be understood by the public as a clear indication that the person is guilty”
Instead, there was a press conference held by UH announcing the suspension.
Wondering …
who was involved in discussions that selected “the three groups that would be included in the presale” (120.)?
what was going on with the $50K loan deal (108.-110.)
when will someone publish a best guess at an de-redacted version of the Factfinders report? or at least put in “X” marks the spot where the “smellies ” are likely to be found.
Ben A Lurker:
I dunno… I just paid $37.95 for 50,000 staples for my pneumatic stapler… and I thought it was a very good deal. 1/4 of what I usually pay.
To get people in the mood… Though this song has references to JJ and the Sugar Bowl which will dredge up mixed feelings for many, I’ve always thought that it was one of the most inspiring in expressing the essence of the Warriors.
http://youtu.be/9qMwwXdC284
P. S. Hope I did the link right, otherwise might not work, lol.
I smirked when I heard talk how Coach Chow should be UH President or AD.
That’s crazy….
Then I remember that he is an Education PhD.
He has not been in the academic portion per se, but has spent his life preparing young adults for life in the real world. He certainly knows about honoring commitments and “doing the right thing”. Assembling staff and earning trust.
I’m not smirking anymore.
Maybe not so crazy… 😐
Stanford beat USC as a 41 point underdog, we can do that too. BELIEVE
SteveeM,
dare you go. gettin religion, huh!
no need education. just look at Greenwood. 😀
Forcier…=(
I could be wrong, but isn’t there a machine of some type that is supposed to clean and maintain that type of turf at Ching Field? Maintenance seems to be an oversight with a lot of State run facilities.
That video of the team singing the fight song along with the band is much better and more meaningful than some generic piped in recorded music over a PA system.
I will right away seize your rss as I can’t to find your email subscription link or newsletter service. Do you’ve any? Kindly allow me know so that I could subscribe. Thanks.

Of course, if upper campus woulda spend $211,000 for equipment for the athletic maintenance shop, like 40 JUGS and 40 DYSON machines for the Ching field and athletic complex, and 10 boxes Dove soap for the locker rooms, then say hire anudda spokesperson or outside sales rep, then we’d have better facilities, no? 😀

and UH athletics would be cleaner and more fresh, and
Terry Bradshaw and Jim Mora Jr. would be up late at nite, eatin Nachoz and eyeing UCLA video and dreamin of doing Hawaii.
boy, am learning alot from da tv 49ers Broncos broadcast today. 😀
The worst thing about the whole UH fiasco is that in their attempt to spin it, they made themselves look more foolish. These my friends, are folks making between $200 and 450k. It shows you the disconnectedness both the UH has with the general public. I’m speaking mainly about leadership and faculty. MRC and gang did not even bat an eyelash to the possibility that Joe Public was smarter than they had thought. There are many hard working, good folks in the UH system. Many on non-tenure, non-facutly positions who wonder each year if they will have a job. To see the leaders of the U fumble things like this is purely disheartening.

i’m disheartened because they’re spending our money foolishly, no soap. us working stiffs gotta work extra to make the bucks to pay for car insurance, pay for gas, pay for airfare to fly honolulu and for car and yada ya to watch the games, and meanwhile these yokels can go and make up their own credit cards and pay each other and PR themselves…
ok. so i am coming Honolulu to watch a coupla games. gotta back up Coach. But these UH-M administrators, who can do this kind stuff to us without blinking an eye, has really
x/$fg up as far as I’m concerned. they spending money I no mo.
Go get em, Legislature!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Hanga idiotz.
i shudda said “pay each other to keep quiet” insteada just say “pay each other”
yep, we izzz stooopid, plain and simple.
BHF2,
Ground errosion underneath the outfield at the softball stadium that created an un-even surface is a potential safety hazard and would cost 100,000+ to correct.
Sorry folks but the entire Department of Athletics complex is in much better shape today than it was when Jim Donovan came on board in March, 2008. Please acknowledge that there is soap and toilet paper in the locker room & showers, there is new & upgraded workout & electronic equipment and coach/staff (paper)work areas.
It doesn’t bother me if UH lost the $200,000.
It doesn’t bother me if they mishandled the explanation.
And if they were to ask for a donation, the answer would be: Don’t bother me.
ST:
#115 – I beat you to that when someone called me from Shidler School of Business and told him I will never donate to UH as long as Greenwood is President.
Re Wikipedia…”Robert Patrick “Tate” Forcier (born August 7, 1990) is a Canadian football quarterback who is currently a free agent. He most recently attended training camp with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.[1] He was a starting quarterback for the 2009 Michigan Wolverines football team ahead of Denard Robinson and Robinson’s back up for the 2010 Michigan Wolverines football team before he left the program in January 2011 when head coach Rich Rodriguez was replaced by Brady Hoke. …”
TomMui, Course cards/registration were at Klum Gym in my day. Business class cards from the school of business if you were a member of the AMA or were a graduating senior.

ok ok. so Jim got Charmin for da toilets, Dove for the soap trays, and a bunch of other neat stuffs for Athletics. But, at least acknowledge that he irritated sum UH-M peeps because he was doing all these good things and not giving UH-M peeps any credit. 😀 😀
and he was outta town wen da UH-M decided fo try WaC him. 😆
hey, i don’t recall reading anywhere in the report about the $50,000 loan that was also “lost”. anybody pick up on that?
Kevin,
dare you go, making trouble, bringing to attention sumtin else dat needs kala from UH.
betcha dolla dolla UH-M hires anudda PR peep before they fix sumtin dat needs fixin. 😀
mo easy to explain away da problem in centerfield wit a PR peep dan it is to fix tings. 😆
after all, day just showed dat at da Les dey only needed half hour and a ladder to fix sum lights. but not considered was all da planning and 4 copies of palapala needed, plus da 3 years wait befo dey could deploy da ladda and install da lights. sheesh…
BHF2,
The Les is the baseball stadium.
They only replaced the burnt out lights with the current out-of-date dim lighting at the softball stadium so far. They will still need to borrow lights from the tennis courts to illuminate the outfield because even with all 56 lamps operating it is still dim out there.
The biggest issue is the 1.7 million legislative appropriated funds from years ago from Brian Taniguchi for new lights. This has not materialized and again supposedly we’re looking at May 2013. New light poles are apparently being shipped from the US mainland.
Some people don’t ask for luxury boxes and stadium seating with individual chairs with armrests and cupholders.
Some just expect things to be a little better than what they are. Safety of spectators and the student-athletes should not be an issue.
I don’t care if Im “making trouble” by stating factual information and asking others for help. This is not for me. This is for the student-athletes.
Greetings from the PNW!
71: I wonder if one of the redacted interviews is of one of the two administrators of whom you spoke? (Practicing my upper-campus-speak, too.) their names don’t seem to be redacted from quotes from other sources, tho a third person’s name mostly was. Which also makes me wonder why the repositioned person, whose identity is mostly redacted, had the name redacted? Still trying to predict the wearer of the next shoe. 😀
What the heck?!?! Is SLS fielding enough boys for two teams?!?!
Hoping those in positions of authority are able to reveal the truth to the public.
Wondering if there will be swift kicks with the shoe before it falls. Claims by MRC and what the report shows do not add up.
Time to sort through weeks of mail.
Ugh.

It ain’t me and judging from his clothing my guess would be “tom mui” – my, what a handsome bugah!!!
Nice the cheerleaders are going to the game. Will they provide their own boombox like they did at UNLV a few years ago?
Geez, at least send the arena pep band to at least play for the Warrior faithful.
Of course they will have to squeeze in their music between those endless USC songs.
tommui used to work for the USPS?

A small group of UH supporters – academic and athletic – are in the process of creating a new and unattached-2-UH public service/public policy organization to take on these challenges.

Jim had a very positive relationship with David McClain, Greenwood’s predecessor. and, of course, Virginia Hinshaw. I do not have first-hand information about his relationship with Greenwood during her first year as System President; however, I can tell you that Jim was down at the Capitol on a regular basis starting with the 2008 Session where he was always greeted with Aloha by legislators, staff, and the public.
I do know that there were uncomfortable incidents with the former Governor, but I can tell you that once the current Gov came on board, those breaches was sealed.
Off to the volleyball stuff via a mini-workout so I won’t be back here until around 8 pm

PADRON #118 – you might be right – I keep thinking about Klum being in the Quarry – but as I think a little bit more, wasn’t it on campus – somewhere around the AdminBldg (referred to as the gas works at one time)?
#86 and 90 – so i guess you think JD is not liable for not paying attention to what was going on regarding the event.
#131 AL – I know who he is.
But STEVEM says don’t be a know-it-all – let other people have a chance.
I agree with Steve M, that guy looks like Guv Ariyoshi…
124 Greenthumb: The former Administrator had the name redacted probably because the Factfinders redacted it. That would be Dr. Hinshaw.
Of course when we were promised a complete and thorough investigation, you will notice in the Cades Schutte report that they were given the task of finding who was responsible for the mess and named JD & RS specifically and “others” as an after-thought.
Strangely missing (among others) from the list of witnesses interviewed was the President and Chancellor.
#140,
I was thinking the same thing.
Sorry re #146 I meant JD & RS were named specifically as people that were to be investigated. “Others” seem to be an after-thought.
dare you go again, correcting me, Kevin. and making trouble by stating factual information on da blog. 😆

#29 Will-I-Am your prediction same as mine:
UH 24 – USC 21…
But as long as we are both right, it’s ok.
Of course USC is going to be heavily favored against UH. However, UH is an unknown. What we do know is that the UH coaching staff has high standards and expectations. They have been around winning teams and players, especially Chow. So, unless USC is totally physically superior or UH physically inferior, it comes down to play calling, strategy, adjustments, and mental confidence as a total team effort and this includes the coaches, especially the coaches. Notice Coach Chow isn’t saying much about the game but I expect that if the ball control offense does it job, it should be a close, respectable game…if special teams also does its job, especially the punt game. Also, wondering how the Southern Cal earthquakes will affect player’s attitude in travel to USC.
#77 replaced Wayne Hunter on jets offensive line and seems to be doing ok
but he sure has a lot of outside help which Hunter did not seem to get last week.
tom mui – if you read the report, it clearly shows that donovan and sheriff were the ones to blame. while sheriff started it all, donovan as AD, should have exercised more oversight of the process, this he clearly failed to do, trusting sheriff to do everything. as head of the AD, donovan is responsible for all actions even though he might not have done the actual “work.” the fact that greenword suspended these two contrary to their administrative rules, the report vindicated the decision. so, there should be not liability to anyone for the suspension. donovan cannot deny that he is responsbile, the fact that he was not physically involved in the transfer of thd $200,000 because he was away, is not a valid excuse. Yes, there were others in the system to blame because they did not act with due diligence (ie Akamine, Toda, Hinshaw, etc.), but the real blame are for these two. It is a wonder sheriff got his job back, he failed on so many levels in not following good business practices. it was just sloppy work by sheriff and others in volved. yes, there was no fraud or intention to personally benefit from the fiasco, but that is not the point. the point is whether these two did their job with due diligence to protect UH from any loss; this they did not do. losing $200,000 is much to large to just get a slap on the wrist; if this was a private company, they would have been gone.
Over simplified criteria, but I think the next UH president should come from a university that plays Division I Football. That’s just me. I’m not certain if someone like MRC Greenwood knows how to deal with such a large athletic department coming from UC Santa Cruz.
Jets receivers suck.
kikaida’s mailman
SC should be able to beat every team in the country. It’s No. 1, right? Of course, SC can’t beat LSU.
Innocent Observer
you are outta your pea pickin mind! The report said JD thought the idea of a fundraiser was a good idea but specifically told UHAD assistant Carl Clapp to make sure he ran the language in the contract by UH Legal Dept.
what you don’t know is who signed the contract. Somone signed the contract. That is who is responsible from the UH side. Tell me Innocent Observer, who signed the contract?
If you don’t know, then you’re just yappin. Like UH-M.
#157 innocent observer you should have said…if this was a private company, they would get millions for losing other peoples money…can you say AIG.
Standing in line for the Rally towel at the SSC at the championship vball game. 3-400 long.
you notice I’m liking the lango “yappin.”
I don’t mind calling JD a nice guy, a softie, not a back biter, not really cut out to deal wit da Kansas RedLegs or da Cali Bears, or summa doze odda self annointed biggies. dats why if Coach Chow like a change, I’m okay wit dat.
but still yet, JD should not be blamed for something he neva do. because if there was a shred of evidence to nail him for negligence in conducting his duties, don’t you know that UH-M’s PR peeps woulda hung him out to dry. no ifs, anz or buts.
My hope is that we leave the USC game without injury and ready for the conference games. Those games are much more winnable.
I also want the players to enjoy themselves and experience playing under the biggest of lights. Memories for a lifetime.
Only a few more days till college football! Woot!
Coach Chow and USC’s running will shorten the game.

Doesn’t the team gather at the end-zone where the band is located after the game and sing the alma mater? Isn’t that the song that the team should learn? It’s easy to sing the UH Fight Song…

“Shock the world” is right.
I would imagine that the alma mater is on Coach Chow’s “memorize this” list.
Maybe Co-Ed is the first step toward a pep-rally on campus. If nothing it surely would rouse the players and everyone else.
I like what Coach Chow is doing. So far it appears to have quite a bit of thought behind each decision and move.
Go Coach Chow!
Go Warriors!
Tommui, I am getting so old, my memory is fading. I cannot be sure where we got our class cards. Registration was so stressful, trying to get the class cards with the preferred professors. That’s how I ended up with Freitas for Finance. I had to repeat the course in the summer.

I guess that the 57-page report I read (several times) was different from whatever you read.
The UH rules is clear that you cannot when people were placed on leave pending investigation, that no information would be made public about the matter until an investigation had been completed.
The rational for the policy expressly recognized that if the UH publicly disclosed that a person had been placed on leave pending investigation, that that information would be understood by the public as a clear indication that the person is guilty (of a crime).
The University publicly disclosed that JD & RS were placed on leave pending investigation. The information given that they were placed on leave gives the public the perception that the two were guilty of a crime.
They were not found guilty of anything.

I thought A-House was career military. I know he went to UH and a friend of Obama (Sr.) but I’m trying to remember if he did anything previous to his military service.
Mrs. A-House said something to the effect that he always looked good in his uniform.
I guess SteveM will let us know when he gets around to it.
PADRON – I keep thinking or picturing a building next to Bachman Hall but my wife says the building I’m thinking of was in where the parking lot for Sinclair Library was located. I don’t know whether it was a Klum gym or not. I think that is where MBB was played.

How does one privately put someone like the Director of Athletics of the state’s only Division 1 football program on paid leave?
If the Clerk Typist III from Ethnobiology is put on leave, no one really cares or would find out or would care to find out.
If UH’s AD is not in his office for an extended period during a time when the Big West is expanding and the football season is just about to start, wouldn’t people think its odd?
The press conference was not a good idea obviously, but how long could you keep something like that private?
Let’s hope one of those twitter accounts has loose lips!!!
Chad Owens is having another amazing season in Toronto…so now his team is throwing out their plan to let him take regular breaks when the offense is on the field so that he would have energy for special teams also.

RE #179, I think Guava and I attended the same practices. UH has looked terrible. The talent we have is a poor fit for the schemes being implemented. If the practices are ugly, I can’t imagine what the USC game will be, aside from over very early.

Maybe that’s why they’re keeping the practices so secretive. Its because their practices are horrible and they don’t want anyone to know. Don’t think Saturday is gonna look very pretty.
Practices seem fine. Schroeder is playing well. This I see every day.
I can’t wait for Saturday! The team has worked very hard. The coaches have worked very hard. The blog host has worked very hard. It’s all coming together!

Nothing like a little bit of “lava love” as the team gets ready for Saturday against the #1 ranked team in the nation. While no one is really expecting UH to come out and win, especially in this rebuilding year, it is not fair to just call them terrible before even seeing them play.
Based on what I read from certain posters here, even if USC themselves were practicing here dressed up as UH, practices would have still looked horrible and talent would have still looked pathetic.
But then again, some see the “lava lining” in everything.
We are a quiet hurricane in the Pacific approaching that’s going to cause unexpected chaos.
PAC12?
Stanford today, USC on Saturday!
Congrats, Wahine!
I’m painting my nails green in celebration. 🙂
That was a glorious win! Awesome Wahine!
Not sure what “system” is being criticized since UH is running a bunch of systems, including last year’s offense. They don’t line up the same way every time. That’s pretty evident to anybody attending practice.
Hey Slugger, I did that last week! Green nail polish. Go Warriors!

What an outstanding win tonight against Stanford. Dave did another great job of using his players.
GREAT GAME WAHINE!
SC-68 UH-0….. gonna be a long day for schroder and the secondary.
We will probably have the best secondary that we have had in a long, long time this year. In my opinion, ever. I am thinking it will be one of our strengths against USC. But we shall see.
A big Mahalo to ST for posting the “Young Tsai-ko” photo of Tommui today. 🙂
An interesting coincidence since today’s Star-Advertiser print front page story ending with a quote from our most prominent Tsai-ko. See AlaWai’s post #11 at 7:33 am today…and the S-A itself.
This photo was difficult to identify in the Young Tsai-ko Challenge, so we wanted to share it with the blog. Tom had fun when he stated with 100% honesty…
🙂 I’ll leave Tom to explain the circumstances, but this probably caused a lot of guess “re-evaluations”…
Anyway, I hope you all found this interesting even though it didn’t fully develop yet…the stage was set but we ran out of time.

Identified with 13% accuracy in multiple choice phase. Mistaken most often for HiFlyer, homey (2x)
Comment:OK, this was tough. hawnstln is in many Lo-Cal Calf Call photos and a frequent road game tailgater. Even mentioned by ST in a blog with pix a few years ago. But difficult to identify because no other Lo-Cal participants and classmate Al not participating. He is an uber-cruiser and shares with the Tsai-ko cruiser group often. Comment: High school senior portrait. Very nice!
I’l have a double Lava & Guava with my win over USC please. Sound like one good drink to celebrate over a Warrior win. Shoots, I’ll celebrate even if we don’t beat them by my predicted score of UH 56 over Tommy Toejams 10.
GO WARRIORS!
Tommui, that’s exactly what I thought! It looked staged so I thought that this person was an actor. I didn’t think it was you because you are a lawyer. Wait a minute, acting is second nature to lawyers right? 🙂
tom…#18 was my subliminal message reply that it was you in the photo…hamburger buddy.
i am sure that i would have been the only one to guess hawnstln since we grew up a half block from each other and played a lot of street football in front of his house.
mo808…yah they good at “shibai”, hahaha.
yup…hard to believe the season is upon us.
i hope the boss can take off for an away game.
oh well, if she cannot i could always sit in both seats. hahaha.
Kekoa, pour me one too!
Try look again at what you typed for photo#17..
Uh SteveM…who was mistaken for Mrs. Bulla? I’m sure you made her day! Heheheh…you better run from those slippahs flyin’ at you!
Fantastic volleyball performance by the Wahine!
Congrats to both the ladies of soccer as well.
Both programs kicked off the official 2012-2013 sports season winning their tourneys!
What are all the photos about? I keep reading references to them, but I never saw anything abouit the original concept.
mo808
You right, wasn’t there another lawyer turned actor in the original hawaii 5-0.
CWD, it was a contest, but to see the photos you had to submit one of your high school self.
HiFlyer, there may well have been. I never really followed the show so I don’t know.
Congrats to the Wahine!
Hey, wait a minute. People mistook gmahoney for me? Howufigga?
kev-1 ~ Some people got their nerve coming on our blog and posting some ridiculous negative chet like that. No respect for our hard working guys. Go hang out on a USC site if you think that much of them.
Oh and by the way. A big sigh of relief for Tsaiko-son, Abe Markowitz who was just told today (Sunday), at the 11th hour, that he will retain his schollie. I thought that was mighty white of SC for making that announcement. It’s the least they could do for the one Poly that has helped shore up their dinged up O-line at center, guard and tackle through these practice months.
Give us your best SC, give us your best!
Night night everyone! See you on the other side of midnight!

I hope you enjoyed this challenge and will look for a photo to share if we have another “Guess the Young Tsai-ko Challenge” next year. Better yet, send it to SteveM for safekeeping NOW. 😛 🙂
kev-1 ! I like the name of that drink too. Sounds ono! I tnink I’ll take the ingredients for a Lava Flow, and add guava…and see you next month.
Ipu Man- I am not really guessing to win a prize. I missed the part of what the correct guess receives if there is a prize.
I just think that is what the final will be. If we are right. Cheeee huuuu, then I will buy you a beer! I am sticking with 24 – 21 UH but excluding myself from a prize if there is one.
What?…7.4 Shaker in Mexicali…film at 11.
RE: #242
Kekoa — sorry, a typo… should be “Mrs. Kekoa”, much prettier. 🙂
RE: #248
jm2375 — yup, must be the forehead match.
#245 It was Kwan Hee Lim – one of the nicest guys you would ever meet but he played a heavy in 5-0 and he was on the show almost as a regular. His son became a Circuit Judge, and if memory served, on the Court of Appeals.
pomai sign me up for 45-USC 17 UH
MO #235 Lawyers are bad actors as a rule
AL #236 – that’s why I said I know the guy!
When you analyze what Coach Chow has done thus far since day one of being named head coach of UH, you have a certain level of confidence. He is doing exactly what he expects to do. Quarterback Shroeder, despite having no DI game experience, has earned Coach Chow’s confidence and that says a lot. Big question is how good is no. 2? Coach is too old and too experienced to get psyched out. He’s organized and motivated. He understands the job and everything that happens, wins and losses, will be a reflection of himself. I think he really believes the wins will take care of themselves if he takes care of his job of developing great young men.
umm . . . what’s with all the earthquakes today? California, Indonesia, Panama, Big Island . . . and counting.
Good day for the Wahines…. first the Soccer team.. then the Volleyball team.. always awesome to see them beat Stanford.
Nice wins this weekend….looking forward to things continuing that way!
1st prize per game for Pomai’s contest, 6 pac Hamm’s beer.
1st prize for most wins for season (tie made by drawing) = Free 1 year pass on the Super Ferry.
2rd prize for 2nd closest total points to 0 for the season with negative points – positive points = 2 nights stay at Sand Island Hotel.
Grand Prize for 1st in closest total points to 0 for the season with negative points – positive points = 1 year of unlimited flights on Aloha Airlines.
kev-1 #260~getting closer to the end of the Mayan calender.
USC 20 HAWAII 24
I forgot for the contest, a lifetime pass good for 3 years on the Hawaii Rail begining right after the season, for the lucky tsaiko drawing that entered.
Excellent post. I was checking continuously this blog and I’
Some believe that’s due to the constant movement of tectonic plates on the earth’s crust.
Some believe that’s due to abortions and gay marriage.
I tend to agree with the Mayan Calendar. I mean why aren’t there any more Mayans? Because they saw the writing on the wall and got the hell out of here.
Judgement Day Sept.1
Stay tune….

Congrats to both the ladies of soccer as well.

So are the photos now available for the rest of us. I remember one photo taken of me when I was maybe three years old and that’s it – except for my driver’s license, my YMCA card, and a Costco card. Too ugly to be pixeled.
The Warriors will represent well….no prediction outside of that, even though the talent over there is high quality….this hasx to be one of the youngest teams in the country….youth at times pays a price—-
Good Morning All!
Season opening game…in 5
GO WARRIORS BEAT USC!
CWD, re. #276. I’ve met you, and you are a wonderful, passionate and intelligent lady! NOT ugly!
SteveM: Maybe, the next contest should be name the 3 year old Tsaiko?
Oops, 276 should be 273!
FUN contest, SteveM! Thanks so much for hosting it.
Morning everyone!
Great weekend with family, friends, food, fun, and football (talk)! Almost got ’em all. Only fish(ing-related) activity was consumption of lomi salmon, and talk of how my Dad used to make it for us.
Anywayz, can’t wait for this season to get here.
Gratz to Wahine Soccer and Wahine Volleyball!!! Great way to start things off!

Thank you, Pomai, for running the guess the score contest. Is this the 4th year?
Someone asked earlier what the prize is for the correct guess. Most of the time no prize. Just the “glory”.

Many individuals do find payday advances to be valuable and also really worth the expense. Individuals who carry huge amounts associated with debt have a good chance of having troubles with these sorts of financial products, but additionally have an overabundance difficulty with financial debt generally speaking.
Big chest!
