Simply, Jesse

Jesse Sapolu made an appearance at today’s practice. He gave a speech on unity — one that UH center John Estes, in particular, found to be inspiring.
Sapolu has two sons — one who will be a senior in high school, another at a JC — and he hopes at least one will play for the Warriors.

Also at practice:

• Rodney Bradley and Greg Alexander teamed on the best pass play of the day, a post pattern that went for a touchdown. Bradley was at least 3 yards in front of the safety and cornerback when he hauled in Alexander’s pass. The play drew applause from teammates.

• As of now, nobody is going to redshirt. Greg McMackin said decisions on redshirts won’t be made until deep into training camp … and maybe into the season.

• Brysen “Bulla” Ginlack practiced as the No. 1 right guard today. The usual right guard, Raphael Ieru, was among the players selected for random drug testing. The past two days, players from all spring sports  have been randomly selected for testing of illegal drugs.

• Linebacker Blaze Soares is expected to be cleared to work out in a few weeks. Meanwhile, UH coach Greg McMackin said, “We’re only thinking about the guys who are out here.” Corey Paredes and Vili Nauahi are gainiing a lot of experience at strongside linebacker in Soares’ absence.

No redshirt? Does that mean that they are ALL good enough for playing time OR, does it mean that none stand out from the rest and the coaches need the competition to keep brewing till the end ot Fall camp and training?

    chawan_cut…

Yeah, I figured it wasn’t you when I looked at it earlier. It wasn’t the Big Mo… and it didn’t have hula girls a dancing…

    ST…

I suppose it’s better that the players with the greatest immediate potential don’t know which of them will redshirt till the very last possible moment. Those that need much more time to muscle-up or learn the playbook for thier particular position(s) probably already know who they are. Having each competitive throughout the practice season and even the regular season can only help both team and player. Better to have them put on muscle than fat.

Didn’t we almost lose Nate Ilaoa to poor off-season non-conditioning habits? And that other running back… who we all had hopes for these past few seasons..what was his name?

  63. Garret April 16, 2009 12:21 pm

Thank you to Ronnie for organizing the Calf Call! This was the first time I ever was able to show up early for a Calf Call–traffic was really light! Unfortunately, Lori and I had to leave at 12:30 in order to pick up our daughter from school (we got back to San Diego just in time).

Good food, good company, light traffic…the only thing bad was that I wish I would have had a few hours more to talk with everybody!

Hal Mumme just got hired as head coach at McMurry.

McMurry introduced Hal Mumme as its 20th head football coach. Of the more than 170 applicants and the five finalists named earlier this month, Mumme — a coach with Division I experience and a reputation as a program-builder — got everyone’s attention. And, by golly, he took the job.

Credit McMurry for going after Mumme, knowing full well it couldn’t come up with the wampum that even New Mexico State paid the coach (almost $200,000 a year).

McMurry is riding a 13-game losing streak and was 0-10 in 2008. The team is 16-63 the past eight seasons, including three winless campaigns.

Things got so bad, McMurry even lost its Indian mascot.

Roman Sapolu committed to Oregon State awhile back (I posted an article or two about that to the blog).

Oregon State picked up its first commitment for the Class of 2010 from one of the Golden State’s top offensive line prospects. Roman Sapolu (Huntington Beach, Calif./ Edison) was offered by the Beavers late last week and jumped on the offer.

Sapolu, 6-2, 250 pounds, is the son of former San Francisco 49er great Jesse Sapolu and will be a three year starter for the Chargers. He projects as a center at the next level and is one of the most athletic linemen in the state.

“I’m very excited about my decision,” Sapolu said. “They offered me last Thursday and I decided to commit early because of my relationship with Coach Cavanaugh, the offensive line coach. He’s not only a great coach but really connects well with the Polynesian players and I’m excited to play for him.

Sapolu said his commitment to the Beavs is firm although he added he does still want to take his visits.

  66. Garret April 16, 2009 12:30 pm

I’m guessing that UH is following the status of Jesse’s son who is playing at a JC now as well as monitoring their position on Roman’s recruiting list. If Roman wants to take his visits and chooses UH for one of his visits, then the recruiting battle isn’t over.

    Cigars, rum and chiken blud.
if you ask my mythical major league player– Pedro Cerrano–he’ll tell you jubo is the key to hitting the curveball.

But for our baseball bowz, our key may just be staying awake on the basepaths. Especially my couz Vinnie, who has more than once in the same game, fallen asleep after the pitch and embarrassed by a 98′ pickoff to second. eh, Vinnie, wazzup, brah?

While, this weekend looms big for any hopes to take a conference lead; and hitting remains a priority our pitching too has fallen on hard times.
So lets hope, for the sake optimism, that our tires went flat in Reno and the wheels are still tightly screwed to its hub.

So, Vinnie, make da Don proud and no worry about jubo– we got cigars, rum n da chicken blud flowing.

    Go Bowz!

$2.9 Million for Les Murakami Stadium

    Written by KGMB9 News – news@kgmb9.com
    April 16, 2009 12:37 PM

Governor Linda Lingle has released $2,981,000 for improvements to women’s locker rooms and the Les Murakami Stadium at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.

These projects are in addition to the $1.8 billion public infrastructure construction plan unveiled by Governor Lingle in December 2008 to stimulate the economy and create jobs.

“University of Hawai’i infrastructure improvements remain a priority as we work to create a world-class institution for learning, research and athletics,” said Governor Lingle. “These projects will ensure comparable facilities for the women’s athletic program and enhance training opportunities for the men’s baseball team.”

    Women’s Locker Rooms – $2,595,000
$2,595,000 will be used for the design, construction and equipment to create a new women’s locker room for the water polo team and renovate an existing women’s locker room for the women’s swimming and diving teams at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. Additionally, an existing women’s locker room in the Athletics Complex will be renovated as part of this project.

The total project cost is estimated to be $2,595,000. Design is scheduled to begin in June 2009 and be completed in December 2009. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2010 and be completed in January 2011.

    Les Murakami Stadium – $386,000
$386,000 will finance design, construction and equipment to expand the Les Murakami Stadium training room. Located under the spectator seating stands, the current training room is small and inadequate for training purposes. This project will make use of adjacent spaces that are currently underutilized to accommodate an enlarged training room for the men’s baseball team.

The total project cost is estimated to be $386,000. Design is scheduled to begin in May 2009 and be completed in August 2009. Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2009 and be completed in April 2010.

Just looking at the headline is a bit deceiving as the majority of the money is going to the Duke Kahanamoku Complex.

    Kazz,

That headline says “$2.9 Million for Les Murakami Stadium”, but actually only $386k of that money is for Murakami Stadium. Anyway, all facility improvements benefit UH Athletics.

To follow up the video that wf2 posted about Susan Boyle, Simon Cowell is reportedly already trying to get a record deal lined up for her:

The 47-year-old Boyle, who says she has never been kissed, was catapulted into the spotlight after her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical “Les Miserables,” on the television show “Britain’s Got Talent” at the weekend.

Cowell is reportedly already trying to piece together a record deal for Boyle, an unemployed charity worker, who lives with her cat, Pebbles.

Susan Boyle has a “great voice” and taken back like others when I first viewed the tape, but never, ever judge a book by its cover. She carried each note with clairty, volume, and moved flawlessly from “range to range”. Truly, a great find from England!!!

I wonder if its all natural or any voice lessons. Either way, she is a very talented lady and I hope she makes multi-millions of pounds ( US dollar very weak now world wide ).

  92. Kazz April 16, 2009 1:57 pm

    Garret,

Yeah I noticed that too after the fact. I just cut and pasted the headline and article from KGMB.

But yeah this is good news considering all the difficulties and the budget cuts to UH as a whole that are going to happen soon. 🙁

At first my heart kinda skipped a beat thinking the money was a HUGE step forward in matching the 5 million dollar donation from the Clarence TC Ching Foundation for completion of the Clarence TC Ching Athletic Complex, but this is not something to sneeze at either.

No doubt there will be a fair share of narrow-minded individuals that will complain as to what programs are receiving this money, but they must not forget that is a benefit to the department and a GIFT for those student athletes that should have the resources available to perform at the highest level possible.

I never cared for the whole “American Idol” stuff or those “reality TV” competitions on TV, but when I saw Susan Boyle’s story on the KGMB 9 news last night, I was amazed!

I mean this woman can sing and I beleive they mentioned that she lives alone with no family and is unemployed. She may not have the “look” or whatever, but if you wanna get down to the nitty gritty of vocal talent, then she’s got it. I had chicken skin watching the crowd go nuts and the judges looking speechless. Damn, they could of just ended the competition right then and there!

I have no idea where one can watch the show she is on, but I hope she takes it all.

  97. madeinhawaii April 16, 2009 2:02 pm

On the positive spin, the requests had to be in a long time ago for the Governor to release the funds in that direction today.

    Made,

That sounds about right. I remember when JD took office at Manoa, he did mention upgrading the baseball locker rooms.

But as for the existing women’s locker rooms (located on the 1st floor of the athletic complex right below Gym 2), I thought they did quite a bit of work there this past year or so. I remember walking by and seeing posters up mentioning construction work being done on them during 2008. Maybe this is supplementary work?

  101. Garret April 16, 2009 2:08 pm

    Liz,

I go by the “what is said at a CC stays at a CC” rule. I will say that it was great to talk with Ronnie again, I was really happy to get to see Pauoa Boy’s family again, and it was nice seeing Brian and Layton. Lots of others couldn’t make it due to work or personal commitments, but it was a nice gathering.

One of the first things we always talk about before the season begins is which games we’ll be able to make it to this season. It sounds like our Southern California chapter will be well represented at the Washington State, UNLV, and SJSU, with some attending other road games too.

I tried the mix plate, but I think the ono plate I had last time was better. The spicy soup was awesome…I can’t believe I never tried that before! Lori hadn’t been to Ono Ono before and she definitely wants to go back.

Rowley has scholarship offers from Hawaii, Stanford, SMU, Washington and Colorado and was being recruited by UCLA and Oregon.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, an Obama-leftist, has issued a report about returning war veterans that has angered military veterans.

The intelligence assessment issued to law enforcement last week said some military veterans could be susceptible to extremist recruiters or commit lone acts of violence. That prompted angry reactions from some lawmakers and veterans’ groups.

Geez, so we send our men and woman overseas to fight against terrorism to protect fellow Americans, only to come home to be profiled as a danger to commit terror on the very people we fought to protect?

What kind of sick-left-mindset is that?

Look, take da bitch on an Afghanistan LRP and drop her off in a OBL-cave.

    observations from today’s practice:
Service team practiced punt coverage/receiving. I guess we expect to see more rugby style kicking. Big drop off in long snapper consistency from last year.
Rolo still has the arm, going side by side with the qbs to show how it’s done. When a receiver didn’t make a catch of Rolo’s pass, Coach Stutzman piped up “Back in the day that was a one-handed grab.”

    http://picasaweb.google.com/808Cruiser/SpringPractice02#

  119. warriorfanny2 April 16, 2009 3:43 pm

dont expect to see rugby-style punting anytime soon, not with an aussie comin to town that takes air out of the pigskin with every boot.
besides, that’s a Duane Akina trademark and he is coaching the longhorns.
RE: longsnappin, Jake’s bro will be rollin into manoa soon and the coconut says it’s all in the genes….and that includes work-ethos.

    Re: Susan Boyle

I echo Kazz’s reaction (#95) and A-House’s #90. Similarly reminded me of a cruise when I saw what I thought was a teenager with a face that looked my age (well, she was my age) climb out of the pool. Turned out she and her husband were the premiere night club “band”…and they specialized in 50-70’s songs. The nightly audience would sing and dance with them. Even Peaches almost got up to dance. 🙂

The best and most entertaining cruise we ever had–went to the forward night club lounge every night they played. We all sang along and danced. Now we do karaoke I suppose, but I thought that the female singer could have won American Idol if it existed 30 years ago. Almost booked a cruise based on what ship they were going to be on next.

    vballfan1,

Mike Sealy? Really? Well… why the heck not? I was just assuming he’d be one to look to fill Dave Shoji’s shoes when that day does come.

Not to digress but, can you imagine what it will be like to have to take over the Wahine program when Coach Shoji retires? Coach Wilton’s body of work ain’t no slouch, but the truth remains that there will be massive public interest in who takes over the Wahine program when Coach Shoji’s time is up. It may not rival that of the search for June Jones’ successor, but it could be close as while the Wahine have yet to return to a Final Four, they remain a draw every season.

  128. Kazz April 16, 2009 4:41 pm

RE: The search for the Men’s Volleyball Head Coach.

While ST previously commented that it seems as if the committee isn’t completely set with the notion of a “nation-wide” search I think they should go “balls out” and give the Men’s Volleyball program one good shot in the arm.

I previously mentioned before that it seems like the NCAA is looking over the shoulder of Division I men’s volleyball and looking to cut it loose if the economic forecast remains shady. So with that in mind let’s give it one good effort and grab the best possible guy to take this program close to what it once was because the reality of having things return to what it exactly was is not exactly a realistic view, but win enough games and it can get close.

If the NCAA wants to oust men’s volleyball across the country, let’s go down with a big “F**K YOU” to them!!! 😈

I know but can you imagine the kind of expectations the fans will have for whoever the new coach will eventually be?

I mean everyone was on eggshells after JJ left, but you can attribute the added heat after a historic season and a controversial AD at the time.

I still feel that while Warrior Football has been the money machine and is the highest regarded program at Manoa, the Wahine Volleyball Program is like the quiet crown jewel of UH athletics.

People may not feel it now and when the time comes a lot of people will realize that they toke Dave Shoji and all the conference titles and NCAA tourney appearances for granted should the transition not be so smooth at first.

People go to a Wahine Volleyball match to expect a win as much as they expect to see that Jack In The Box blimp flying around at halftime. IF things aren’t so smooth when the transition comes then it might get ugly.

I mean we all saw and read how impatient people got and we all had our share of complaints about the football team’s struggles last season and that was one season removed from a GREAT 2007 and 2006 run. Imagine what the backlash may be after a shakey start to a season from a volleyball program that has been top notch for 20+ seasons?

This is all hypothetical of course and who knows, maybe the next coach for the Wahine will just be able to pick up where Coach Shoji left off, but we’ve seen the ugly side of Hawaii fans.. the real DUMB and UGLY side… 🙄

  136. warriorfanny2 April 16, 2009 5:21 pm

    kazz,

agree with you and as we know there is only one answer to that question ………. just win babe. but looking at the other side of the coin. there needs to be a person the fans will loved, respect, and will follow similar to mac and nash. the program will slide but not deep enough that it will crash. wilton was a good pick up from rosehill as june was for von o-fer thirteen. we are still Hawaii and are deeply set in our ways as to what we see as leader and movtivators. we either with you or not.

last night I watch the John Burns story. the many people who believed in what he wanted for hawaii was amazing. till today some 40 or so years latter they still gather to celebrate and talk about his deeds. this is the only way I see that come closest to how people of hawaii will reacts to UH coachers.

Jason- ono MidEastern salad good for the tummy:

    Plain yogurt
Cucumbers- peeled and seeded and salted a little.
    dill weed

Drain and rinse cucumbers, slice into thin strips, add to yogurt and add dill to taste. Proportions are your choice. More yogurt is better.
Great with meats or by itself.

Lay and Williams were the key players that Nash was after. Now he had two more scholie to offer… hopefully he’s got some under the radar type players ready to commit. He seems to be paying his cards close to his chest so I wouldn’t be surprised if he pulls a rabbit or two out of his breast pocket.

David Veikune was mentioned in this article about possible Dallas Cowboy draft picks for OLB in their 3-4 D.

The Cowboys have their eyes on several hybrid players. Richmond’s Lawrence Sidbury, Western Illinois’ Jason Williams, Ohio State’s Marcus Freeman and Northern Illinois’ Larry English are among the national prospects visiting Valley Ranch this week. They also had Texas Tech’s Brandon Williams in for their Dallas Day workout.

Then there are guys like Cincinnati’s Connor Barwin, who is likely to be picked before the Cowboys’ top selection (No. 51 overall), Hawaii’s David Veikune and Connecticut’s Cody Brown.

  190. Garret April 16, 2009 9:08 pm

It must have been a great feeling for Coach Nash to get to break the news about the two recruits at the banquet…and I’m sure the people at the banquet were happy for him (and a little relieved).

  202. madeinhawaii April 16, 2009 9:22 pm

    chawan-cut,

For Nash, that future might be more immediate than long-term. He needs to get to winning form within the next two seasons. Only ‘that’ will give him more years at the helm. That’s not a whole lot of time to turn things around. I wish him all the success, though. I’d love to see him show everyone how a coach who came up through the ranks as a player at UH can succeed. We need more coaches who have come full circle at UH.

A lot of negative reaction by both UW and WSU students to the news of moving the Apple Cup to Qwest Field each Thanksgiving weekend. Lots of worry about traditions disappearing, the loss of a home field advantage for WSU, . . . all of the usual college game day experience kinds of things.

If those who are going to make the decision listen to the fans the deal will not happen. But then, since when have any of those kinds of people ever really listened to the fans?

aloha Tsaikos from brrrrrrrr Ogden Utah,

we came up here for the Letterman’s Banquet and also the Spring Scrimmage tomorrow. The Beast is taking care of business, received his jacket and also a lot of rave reviews from the coaching staff. Andre Dyson, former NFL star is very personable and has a great family.

Cameron Higgins rec’d Offensive Player of the Year award, with his record season last year. I will have to share the video sometime of the 2009 highlights, some really nice clips.

UH O line and D line looks as though they have been working hard at perfecting their craft. This summer will be a good indicator of the anticipated future success. I look for the Warriors to go 8-4 or better this season.

April 25 is right around the corner and i look forward to seeing everyone. Anty Lyn will be in Maui for 2 funerals so i’ll be flying solo in my portuguese Hummer……haha

    Be safe 🙂
