As to Tui signing with USC as preferred walk-on and how they might support his tuition and room and borad, in lieu of an athletic scholarship. Being in academics, I know that Samoans are highly underrepresentd at the univeristy level, thus it would be fairly direct to support a portion and/or the entire amount of the tuition and r&b, via direct aid from the university. Factor in that he is a prized recruit, and well, lets just say, phone calls can be easily placed from one administrator to another–this is especially true at well endowed school like USC and they have more flexibity on such matters, as they are a private univeristy.
Every QB Chow has coached has gotten looked at or played in the NFL, even Schroeder right now.
Tui is gonna have a hard time cracking the 3 deep @QB…but like they say you won’t know how good you really are unless you are competing against the best… Good luck to him now on to those who want to be Warriors…

Really bummed about Tui switching. I’m sure they made an informed decision and are aware of the pluses and minuses with signing with both schools and made the best decision for themselves. I think he would have been a legend in Hawaii if he stayed though.

Guess there’s always a way for these schools to get around NCAA scholarship limits due to probation if they have enough money. NCAA probation? Take away 8 scholarships? That’s ok. We have financial aid! “Wink, wink.”
Don’t know much about Lealao as a player, but his choosing Vandy is a great choice, if he is also a terrific student. That is a fine academic institution. Best to his academic future.

As to Larry, when you are 18 years old, and being on campus at USC–it at once and breathtaking and impressive. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a great SC fan, in either its academics or athletics. That said, the facilities, the ukupila national championship trophies and heismans—its very impressionable for any young person.
I’m very happy for Larry Tuileta. He made a great decision for him and his family. He’ll do great in L.A

Tui as a Football walk-on will have to pay to play at USC just like anywhere else. He will have to pay until he hopefully to earns a scholie. There is no way around it with the NCAA, he has to have a Football scholie to play Football for free.

You win some, you lose some. No need be bitter about it. I’m as much a fan of UH as the next, and am proud of the degree i got there. But UH vs. USC is no contest in every aspect – both academically & in athletics. Only exception is weather maybe.

Tuileta might have had a chance to start but he’s still have no CFB experience. We need a JC QB who is “game ready” right now. I mean WTF is Chow waiting on, the sooner he gets here the sooner he’ll be ready to play.

This is why I don’t get very concerned about the recruit situation until I see who is actually on the field on game day, and how they and the team perform. Some will, some won’t – so what? Move on.
Okay, that’s a bald faced lie. I even groveled for Mr. Tuileta in a previous post. True, it’s a disappointing “loss”, but Tui has to do what his heart tells him. Best of luck to a super talented and deserving young man.

Good look Tuileta, you made a decision that was right for you and not some arm chair blogger at home. I think any kid who wants to leave home for whatever they’re reasons are is great. Recruiting, win some, lose some, and you carry on. I do hope though that we get more o-lineman though…
I think there is some really good players in this class. If we don’t sign some oline, a Rb and a QB (was hoping 2 qbs). This class needs wise will be worst in a long time. Can’t understand why we targeted mainly defensive players when the offense was equally bad if not worse!
71– Actually no. “Other USC full scholarships and fellowships (primarily for low-income, minority and underrepresented students)” This is directly from the USC admissions. All Larry would have to do is gain full admission to the univeristy on his academic merit, and the institution could then make a scholarship offer based on the need, merit and a specific underrepresented group, or a combination thereof.
Just because a coach doesn’t share his plans and recruiting strategy doesn’t necessarily mean that he lacks one or the plan is flawed. Things have been so silent lately that I imagine that Chow was working on something that needed secrecy. Maybe it doesn’t come out in our favor, maybe it does. Its ok not to want the guy as coach but he’s not an idiot. He has thought about all of the things we bring up.

89 we were 11th of 12 in scoring in the MWC. And majority of those points came in the 4th qt. Those last 2 teams we scored a ton on also fired their coaches cuz the teams were under performing.
You can’t just put a recruited athlete (which Tui is) on academic scholie. I imagine he is eligible for financial aid based on the need formula used for every other student.

If a player is not on any athletic scholarship money as a DI volleyball student-athlete, then that player has the ability to attain any non-athletic scholarship support (within certain parameters, such as not receiving a high school booster club funded or community funded scholarship based upon athletic prowess). This means that academic, merit and need based scholarships are available to athletes.

We need a QB badly who can make quick decisions and get rid of the ball quickly. So scrambling ability would help as well. We don’t have a oline that you can just sit in the pocket a go through your options.

JC guy, unless very talented, will take 1 year to learn the system; especially if they miss and I assume he will miss Spring ball as classes are well underway at UH

This is really sad that Tuileta went to USC. He may never see playing time as a quarterback since USC obviously didn’t think he was good enough to offer a full-time scholarship for him. Also, in Volleyball, he’s short compared to the guys that they normally recruit (6ft 5in plus) so that also explains why they didn’t offer him a scholarship for Volleyball either. If you want my honest opinion, he messed up. He should have taken the full ride at UH and he had a shot at starting for two sports. Good luck affording tuition of 22k plus a semester plus books and housing. Talk about giving up a bird in the hand for two in the bush. LOL!!!
Just keep in mind the freshmen recruiting class, not matter how good or bad or mediocre, won’t make any major impact until 2016. This is true for every school. So overreacting is a waste of time. The only players you can realistically expect make an impact in 2014 are the transfers. UH needed more transfers this year, but if they go too transfer heavy, it creates a gap in the roster age (not enough quality upperclassmen in 2011, 2012 & 2013).
The majority of the most talented players were underclassmen the past 2 years.
Chow’s makeshift first class of 2012 is just entering their 3rd year. 2013 entering their 2nd. It was pretty universal that 2013 was better than 2012 from a recruiting standpoint. So things are going to get better regardless of how this class shapes up in the coming weeks.
Good news… UH just got Gifford…
Tuileta’s decision just tells me he cares more about academics and volleyball than football. He wants the USC degree, and is willing to gamble that he’ll receive enough financial aid to afford it. And he knows that as a walk-on to the USC volleyball team he’s good enough to get playing time. I’m sure he understands that he’ll probably never see the field for the Trojan football team. Sark is a good talker but it’s obvious just from looking at the current and incoming USC QB lineup (Cody Kessler, Max Browne, Jalen Greene, Ricky Town) that Tuileta’s role will be throwing passes to second-string receivers in practice.
Manly Williams also.. but I think ST said he’s going to be a grayshirt. I think he’s got very good potential if he can get his academics in order.

When one door closes, another opens. Tuileta had the opportunity to lead Hawaii, obviously he wasn’t the guy. Says enough about his loyalty if he pulled the hat trick on his home state. Excited to see what QB(s) get brought in, as there are some interesting ones on the block. I suspect something is in motion after this flip flop. A much bigger loss for our volleyball team.
Dejon Allen, John Waa, Elijah Tupai probably make an impact as redshirt FR. Ben Clarke started as redshirt FR.
Im not sure why people are panicing about the QB position when the Oline and defense were far worse. I saw promise in both Woolsy and Graham who both lacked D1 game experience but have the physical tools to do well. With better protection and polished reciever play I think either one can have a decent season.
Of bigger concern is the Oline, defense and over all lack of team speed.
I didn’t realize Manly Williams was that tall.
Dayton Furuta said he wants to be a middle linebacker, so grayshirting will help him gain some weight.

I remember reading about a UH student had a academic scholie and made the Football team and was told if he played sports for the University he would stripped of his academic scholie per NCAA rules. USC is still under probation so I doubt they will be able to offer Tui anything other than a Volleyball scholie and the NCAA has a cap on how many mens Volleyball scholies per year and it’s not much. Tui would not be allowed to play Football he had a Volleyball scholie per NCAA. Or be striped of his Volleyball scholie to play football. He would have to have a Football scholie to play football for free. It’s a way the NCAA keeps the schools from cheating on the scholarships offered by high revenue generating sports like Football and Basketball.
114… Sark is an excellent talker. Always pulled in good talent at UW, but he’s not a good in-game coach or tactician. I heard endless complaints from my UW friends and my one USC friend isn’t thrilled Sark got the job.
I think Sark’s top end is 10 wins at USC… which won’t be good enough to get him beyond his new contract with USC standards. He’s going to bring in outstanding talent to USC for the next guy to dominate with, especially when they get all their scholarships back.

Because Cesar Fermin wasn’t eligible this semester, he had to sign another letter of intent. He said he did that this morning.

The QB situation with Graham and Woolsey is not as bad as people make it out to be. The three things they lacked are fixable – composure, blocking and a running game.
Pressure can make an all time great QB like Manning look very pedestrian. People got to remember Graham faced more pressure against USC and OSU than Manning did in the Super Bowl. The number of sacks and hits he took in the first two games knocked whatever composure he had out of him.
Our passing game under SS slowly improved as the blocking and running improved.

119… that’s the big X factor for the offense this year… I think at least two of those RS-FR guys will become starters this year. If the line can protect better, then I think UH will be fine offensively regardless of who starts at QB.
They are going to make mistakes like all freshmen do, but this group of RS-FR appear to be big upgrades. Clark will be a 3rd year starter at center, so he should be able to direct the new guys in the right direction pre-snap.
Special emphasis on Clark being a 3rd year starter at center…
Watched the PIAA NLI signing online and noticed “University of Colorado” when they introduced Devan Stubblefield. No worries though. We got ’em!

Very excited to see Dany Mulanga in 2 years… He’s got the Kam Chancellor type frame. Could be a scary intimidator roaming the secondary.
Men’s volleyball scholarship limit is 4.5, spread over 18-22 student-athletes. As Tsai says, some get the equivalent of book money. Almost no one gets a full ride for volleyball.
Not as concerned as I was about the lack of O-line commits. Am told by reliable sources that led by Wa’a, we may see 2 or 3 RS freshmen starting on the O-line next year. That said, I do hope we pick up a couple more big guys sometime before the summer.
Glad to see a big smile on Tui Eli’s face. In previous blogs it was mentioned that he was a real sleeper of this class, particularly o-linemen. Now if we can keep that smile on his face as he pancakes his opponents that would be even better.
Looks like our defense has secured some real gamers. Competition for spots should be even greater as we get ready for the season.
If our defense can make marked improvements, we will be much more competitive. Very exciting.
137… Just a side note, Women’s VB gets 12.
Men’s Golf gets 4.5 scholarships while Women’s Golf gets 6. Coaches can split up the scholarships how they want to.
@Former UH Athlete: Actually Tuileta’s parents weren’t paying anything for school this year because he had an athletic scholarship from Punahou. I hope Tuileta’s parents saved up enough money because USC is around 45k a year plus books and housing.

The biggest potential improvement on defense during this offseason is the hiring of Clune. Clune’s effect on the team will be immediate. Gotta wait and see how today’s signees develop, learn and mature before they make impact on the field.

126, 141, FUHA and et al…To clarify, if you one were to get any partial aid related to an athletic scholarship, e.g. partial V-Ball, then it would count against any school aid or in some instance disallow you from other institutional aid. That said, any student-athlete who receives any amount of athletic financial aid is considered a “counter” per NCAA rules. Once a student-athlete is considered a “counter” there are situations in which other types of financial aid may be required to be “counted” as athletic financial aid.
Any scholarships that a student-athlete will be receiving from groups such as a Rotary or Kiwanis club, a church youth group, or a high school booster club should be sent to the financial aid office of the college the student-athlete is attending so that the scholarship can be processed properly. In addition, NCAA rules may require that the donor organization of the scholarship be required to complete a questionnaire to determine whether athletic participation was part of the criteria for the awarding of the scholarship.
In addition, if a student-athlete also receives an academic scholarship from their college or university due to their high school GPA or their ACT or SAT test score, the fact that they are already an NCAA “counter” may affect the value or receipt of their academic scholarship. Once a student-athlete is a “counter” all other financial aid received from their institution is required to “count” as if it is an athletic scholarship, unless the student-athlete qualifies for an exemption based on the level of their GPA, their class rank, or their ACT or SAT test score.
In Larry’s situation, if he were a need based student or academically merit receiver, he can take that in lieu of a scholarship. Does not happen all the time, but it does not disallow you from opting to taking another financial package, you just can’t stack them all together. This is just my own hunch, but he may have been already qualified for need based aid (low income)and had strong grades (academics), which would validate an alternative form of aid, and juxtaposed against a partial scholly, it would provide both a more viable financial option to take need based aid or a partial scholarship or the sorts.

Yeah SS definitely did peak at the end of the 2013 season. I think a big part of that was due to the OL developing and getting better as the season went along. Once they were able to protect him a lot better, then we could start seeing the real SS. It’s hard to really blame Graham for his struggles though. He started to show improvement at the Nevada game and get things rolling, but that’s of course when ge got injured. Moreover, once he got healthy enough to play, he lost all that playing time due to the injury that he had no time to develop more. Didn’t help also that once he made a mistake, Chow yanked him and put SS which of course is understandable since SS was starting to play very well.

I think we did well with this class. If I would stop reading message boards, I’d be even happier. Considering our record, we landed some players that can help right away and others who have excellent qualities and need to improve others. We lost a couple of verbal commits but it doesn’t seem any worse than other years. If our QB situation was more set there wouldn’t be so much fretting about Tuileta. Its possible that he becomes a starter at some point but he isn’t the QB we need, right now.
i guess maybe the thinking is if the d can limit points and o-line can limit sacks and hurries, along with the greatly experienced and talented receiving corp…then TG will be alright. it seems to me unlike SS first year, tg will have more of a stronger and wiser supporting cast to help hide the flaws and maximize his strengths

It’s exciting to think what the offense may look like next year. Iosefa in the backfield with St. Juste shifting all around. Kirkwood is the deep threat and Harding is our sure handed slot. Pedroza was suppose to start at Utah so I’m hoping he turns out to be our gamebreaker. The Oline will only improve in year 2 under Naeole. All we need is a facilitator. I think to many’s surprise, Graham will be able to accomplish this. He goes into the season with almost no expectations compared to last year, hopefully making it easier to perform. It looks like our D has some size and speed and we have added some depth to the receiving corps. While many are spreading the doom and gloom disease, we really do have a lot of which to be hopeful. I’m excited!

Well, at least the defense can’t get worse, so up is the only way to go. I think the DLine will be much improved and Clune’s multi-faceted defense will keep opposing OC’s guessing. LB’s is a bit of question but it sounds like UH has better athletes this year. I think the DBs will be fine. I think Clune will help them out more. The corners just weren’t quite good enough to be left alone on islands as much as TK had them.

The news of the players that Coach Chow is getting is making my night much warmer here in chilly Texas.
I am very excited to see some of these guys get in and work already. Like I said last season and before, Chow is putting a very decent team together. They just need to mesh together and execute. We have been a younger team lately but we will be a good team this year. A few plays here and there last season was the difference between out 1-12 season and a much better season.
By Punahou standards think USC more prestigious than UH. Just hope his promised spot is nt forever on the bench.

Spending that much money for their kid to go Punahou, I would hope they would pick the prestigous school like USC over UH. Not knocking UH which is a good school, but I would think parents send their kids to private school to elevate them for a better chance at getting into those prestigous mainland colleges. Of course that can easily be achieved by going to public schools since I think the effort the student puts in matters more than the high school they are that, but of course it helps to be at Punahou or Iolani.

Guys like Malik hutchings, Emmett Tela, etc had Hawaii offers at some point… Waited too long and those offers went to someone else…
I think Patterson was in a similar situation where he had offers during the fall and didn’t commit.

Honestly, I been going against what I normally do when posting and haven’t even checked him out till right now… I just tried to get the info out as soon as possible and stuck with the recruiting sites offers, rankings as a source. He looks physical like he could convert into a safety. I noticed he made 2nd team all league DB. I don’t see top end speed either but he does have long strides which make him probably makes his speed deceiving.
Gotta look more into him though when i have time.

USC is one of the most generous schools in the country with financial aiid– granst. Without violating NCAA rules, Tuileta can receive a full ride scholarship as a walkon and it will not count against either the football team or the volleyball team. Under the rules, he will give up other financial aid and his athletic scholarhip will then count against whatever sport awards him the scholarship. This is also true at Hawaii– there have been several walkons n football and other sports, including soccer and volleyball, who get financial aid, but maybe not the amount that USC can give.

I don’t think Tuileta is a div 1 QB. Might have been the best volleyball player Hawaii has seen in a long time. Not sure where the football team could put him. He’s not going to be a QB at SC.

Anyway, thanks to Boolakanaka and Manoa 2 for explaining how financial aid works. The only way to make it clearer is by saying that LT is going to USC as a preferred walk-on. Although not on athletic scholarship, he will receive enough financial aid to cover the FULL cost of attending USC. So his parents will not have to pay a dime for his education. USC is a great school and good luck to this young man. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear he will attend UH, he will receive a wonderful education and that will open doors for him when he graduates.
I jus wonder why UH cannot offer the same deal with some incoming players if applicable.

266-Warrior Dave, in short they could, but a couple of things may not be in place for it to be copasetic. The unfortunate reality is that many players would not be going to school, if not for an athletic scholarship.
Thus, they would have to fall under several of these germane areas: a good if not great student, fit within income/asset guidelines to considered need based and possibly coming from an underrepresented group. In Larry’s case, I don’t know for this fact, but it would not surprise me if he was not the type of student that USC would have recruited in any event (i.e not even consider his athletic abilities) he comes from one of the top prep schools, I am assuming has good scores and grades, and from underrepresented group. Now, if all of this is in fact true, and if his is family is under median guidelines, roughly, family per capita income at less than 85K annually, at least at my institution (boola U), he would get a total full ride….tuition, books, R&B and even a computer and airfare to and fro–so, in some ways, if the situation is right, the school aid can be just as good, or perhaps better than an athletic scholly. But, no doubt, you have to hit the items, I mentioned above.
In my mind, John Ursua is good enough to play Division I basketball, but he is slated to be on football scholarship when he returns from his mission next year. Ala, Miah Ostroswski.

I had a feeling Murphy’s Law was going to kick in and I’ve been saying all along that we should have gotten a second QB for this recruiting class. Now, we don’t have any and Chow is left to scramble and he needs to find a diamond in the rough and get lucky, like really lucky. How many good QBs are still left out there? Maybe Tuileta, even if he signed with Hawaii was not going to be the answer, who knows. Maybe he would have been excellent, who knows. One thing is certain, he was the best QB in the State of Hawaii.
At this point, I am not all that confident with the 3 QBs in the program right now and that’s based on what they have produced so far. I’d like to think that Woolsey will improve this year. Graham, to me, has stage fright. When the lights shines on him, he’s like a deer frozen. Higgins is an enigma. He was the starting QB at St. Louis ahead of Mariota and look at what happened after that. He can’t be that bad, is he? Unless, Chow can’t do better at the QB position, our fans are doomed to 2-10 or 2-11 this next season even though, technically, we have a better overall team. That one critical position says it all, it’s either Holy Crap or Holy Grail.
I’m interested to see what Freshman QB Chow and company are going to bring in with the class?

Just as an even further clarification on why Larry would turn-down a full scholarship. So, lets take an example like Stanford athletics, summarily, Stanford’s athletic scholarships are almost all fully endowed, so they are able to offer a full complement of scholarships in every non revenue sport without worrying about funding.
Now, I am not saying he is being recruited by Stanford for volleyball, unlike most other schools, despite the pressures on Title IV, it is one of the rare schools, that is able to provide full scholarships outside of the big two: basketball and football. Thus, he could go to such a place, if he was indeed being recruited for volleyball…In fact, the total amount of full scholarships at Stanford is in the 325 plus range…..

I was disappointed by by Tuileta’s decision but not surprised. When opportunity knocks it makes sense to respond. I wish he would have stayed and had visions of the vball program in particular moving to another level. Much harder to predict how good a D1 QB he will be. So I wish him well and hope his gifts serve him well. I also hope we recruit someone who makes us forget all about the disappointment today.

I get the frustration and feeling snubbed and maybe disrespected by Tui’s signing process. But he’s a kid and no doubt new at being held as a celebrity. It is us who elevate these sports figures to celebrity status. I guess it is annoying when they don’t respond to our attention with humility and respect. But we all have to grow up in our own ways. I have no idea what it feels like to be called upon by big time programs with attractive offers when you are a teenager. I imagine it would have gone to my head and I might have acted funny too. But no worries, life is generous in offering us all lessons in humility sooner or later.
I’ve heard of prospects, including their parents, right up to the last day of contacts telling (or lying to) the coaches they are solid in their commitments then change they’re minds.
If there is someone to blame, it should be the coach (Sarkasian) that engages in last-minute poaching. Then again, you got a newly hired head coach who is behind the recruiting game.
One guy that comes to mind is new Vandu head coach Derek Mason. Think I read that he poached a lot of recruits that were solid commits to other schools.

USC also has a couple of QBs already ahead of him including redshirt freshman, Max Browne who is a 5 star rated QB. I don’t think Tuileta will be seeing the field, if ever, in a Trojan uniform. But he will play a lot of volleyball for them. Maybe volleyball is his first love!
Don’t forget that there is strong pressure for Punahou kids to “get off the rock” and attend school on the mainland (being founded by missionaries). For a Punahou (or Iolani for that matter) grad to attend UH is considered as a letdown or disappointment by many associated with those schools and also many on the outside. That’s just the way it is.
Tui is going to ride the pine for a minimum of two years. He’s not passing Kessler and there are high profile QBs already there. Tui will be stuck at the bottom of the depth chart and will be nothing more than a scout QB for USC. The politics of being a walk-on will keep him down also. Odds aren’t good for Tui to pass Max Browne or Conner Sullivan even if he outplays them.
When his parents get tired of forking over $45k + housing + extras only to watch their son cheer on his team from the sidelines, the door will open for his return.

While we’re on the topic of poaching… How about the poach job Lame Kiffin did for Alabama…. He walked right into Auburn for a house visit and got one of their best commits to flip from Auburn to Alabama.
I think we just learned why Saban hired Kiffin… For this exact reason. As much of a dork and poor playcaller he is, the guy can flat out recruit. Bringing in talent was not his downfall at USC. I’m just curious to see how tight of a leash Saban has on Kiffin to mess with the offense. Bama has never had a dynamic offensive style, it’s a pretty simple offense, but well executed with the best athletes in the country. As long as Kiffin doesn’t try to get too fancy, it’s going to be hard to screw up Alabama’s offense.
It is obvious to me and maybe to Tuileta that he is going to USC for volleyball and not football. Say all you want about riding the pine, and never seeing the playing field as a QB. etc. He’s a smart young man and will get a chance to play volleyball and get a good education.
Lastly, the logo on the name plate was put there by PIAA in advance. I can’t Ame him for that but I am wondering what he was signing for the TV cameras. Would be sick if it was the UH LOI and then put on the USC cameras for TV. But at this point I don’t care and am moving on.

I am not as worried about Tuileta choosing USC over UH as I am with the fact that it seems so many consider him “Plan A.” I don’t mean to badger him, because I think he is a great athlete. But in my opinion, his fame will come on the volleyball court, not the football field. Next.
Geez…I hope Dakota Torres and his family don’t feel disappointed about his choice to attend UH. There’s a place for everyone, and all should be happy that the kid gets to attend college on scholarship and play the sport that he loves.
Warrior Dave: thanks for the logical, reasonable, well-considered post about Tui. First, I attended the PIAA ceremony this morning. He did not do anything to embarrass UH at the ceremony. Unlike many high profile recruits who sit in front of the ESPN cameras with multiple caps on the table in front of them, and then proceed to pick one and then another for “dramatic” effect (when did this lame practice start, anyway?), Tui’s nameplate PREPARED BY PIAA displayed the UH logo. After signing some papers, he put on a cap like virtually every other football signee. I don’t know when the nameplate was prepared, and I don’t know when Tui last talked to PIAA about his decision making process. It was obvious from his post event interview that it was an emotional decision that was made by him and his family.
A lot can happen in the last few days of the recruiting period, which includes a Quiet Period and a Dead Period. USC’s new staff, unlike many other coaching staffs, was very aggressive in closing out the recruiting process. They won’t be making excuses about coming in late to the process.
And yes, I think it is reasonable to assume that Tui and his family know the costs of attending USC, and are aware of the present and future depth charts (2015 QB recruit Town announced over a week ago). So many posters make it seem as those matters will come as a surprise to his family……..
Yes, disappointed that we won’t see him as a Warrior, but c’mon guys. Let’s focus on our new recruits. For example, Jahlani Tavai has the makings of a real over-achiever. And Castro can make a big impact this coming season–we could never have signed a player like him out of high school.

well, it seems the consensus here that tui may be a bench warmer for the football team, and that his best opp is with vb. two questions:
if his best option is with vb, why didn’t the usc vb coach offer a scholarship?
if sark likes him so much, why didn’t he recurit him at uw?
any reasonable answers to the above questions?

321…Yojimbo. These are great considerations. Which leads me to my original posit, that is to say, that just on a pure admission perspective, (not considering any athletics) Larry is the type of student USC would have already targeted to be part of its incoming freshmen class. If so, it would create a great incentive to recruit him, as the monies would come outside of the athletic department. Again, what is assumed is the following: he has very strong grades/scores; from an underrepresented minority group; and falls within need guidleines. If so, there is nothing to lose from Sark’s side, and he could get large parts of his tution and R&B, totally covered.
Many posters think he or rather his parents are going to pay full freight at USC—which is not the case. Average aid package is the mid $20,000, and if you qualify and they really wanted you to attend, they can pick-up the entire cost. So the idea that his parents would pay full cost, given how these things work, is rather remote.
