Welcome to the Warriors Castro, Fairchild, Jerrell, Lewis, Mulanga and Shawley. Keep em coming coaches, it’s still early in the am for the local boys I expect to see them on the list later today. Lets keep in mind that this happens every year at Hawaii, after the big day LOI today, If needed, Chow and the coaches will still be recruiting and there might be some late signees and transfers as well.

  24. sofaking_blk February 5, 2014 7:12 am

If we get em, great, if we don’t then it’s their loss.

  35. NorthShoreFan February 5, 2014 7:35 am

Dang it…they showedhim signing with the UH plate out front…must have been a last second thing…even Lakalaka was tweeting UH…wow!

  36. A-House February 5, 2014 7:35 am

OK, Chow, now what are you going to do?

Bring in 1 or 2 QBs that’s waiting in the wings?

  37. NorthShoreFan February 5, 2014 7:37 am

    Seems to me plan B…

  38. 808Fringe February 5, 2014 7:41 am

If Tui signed with USC, good luck kid!

  39. NorthShoreFan February 5, 2014 7:44 am

  40. Honu888 February 5, 2014 7:45 am

I’ll hit up the bar now if we got Nifae..

  45. kaimiloa February 5, 2014 7:52 am

Five years from now… “What ever happened to what’s-his-name, that Punahou guy, who went to USC?”

  46. 808bowler February 5, 2014 7:52 am

smh hope tui family can afford usc. best of luck to him.

  47. Dan-O February 5, 2014 7:54 am

808bowler…..trust me, he will not be paying a dime.

  48. sofaking_blk February 5, 2014 7:54 am

There’s always a guy like Tui every year, bug out at the last second.

  49. Bugaz February 5, 2014 7:54 am

So did he sign a walk on agreement with USC?

  50. Bugaz February 5, 2014 7:56 am

    Is a walk on binding?

  51. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 7:57 am

I say lets wait till signing day is over before we jump to conclusions…

  52. boolakanaka February 5, 2014 7:57 am

As to Tui signing with USC as preferred walk-on and how they might support his tuition and room and borad, in lieu of an athletic scholarship. Being in academics, I know that Samoans are highly underrepresentd at the univeristy level, thus it would be fairly direct to support a portion and/or the entire amount of the tuition and r&b, via direct aid from the university. Factor in that he is a prized recruit, and well, lets just say, phone calls can be easily placed from one administrator to another–this is especially true at well endowed school like USC and they have more flexibity on such matters, as they are a private univeristy.

  53. Inyoface February 5, 2014 7:58 am

Every QB Chow has coached has gotten looked at or played in the NFL, even Schroeder right now.

  54. Bryson February 5, 2014 7:59 am

Tui is gonna have a hard time cracking the 3 deep @QB…but like they say you won’t know how good you really are unless you are competing against the best… Good luck to him now on to those who want to be Warriors…

  55. Traitmanz February 5, 2014 8:01 am

No need to trash talk a 17-18 year old kid. He got offered a better situation and product and he took it. Cant blame him. Where always gonna get guys like that but well always get those guys like Tulimasealii

  56. PONO February 5, 2014 8:02 am

Really bummed about Tui switching. I’m sure they made an informed decision and are aware of the pluses and minuses with signing with both schools and made the best decision for themselves. I think he would have been a legend in Hawaii if he stayed though.

  57. NorthShoreFan February 5, 2014 8:03 am

#54..true dat…if not on the playing field then….it’s on to a USC diploma..hopefully paid by the school.

  58. kp3409 February 5, 2014 8:05 am

Maybe a V-ball offer that includes being able to play football?

  59. kapakahi February 5, 2014 8:06 am

    Lealao to Vandy.

  60. misterfudge February 5, 2014 8:07 am

I see the Tuileta signing as a VB ploy. Doubt he ever lands a FB scholarship. Get financial aid package, keep him on the FB roster and start on VB team.

  61. A-House February 5, 2014 8:07 am

my last take on Tuileta – perhaps he had visions that he can emulate what Marriota has accomplished at Oregon starting as a “walk-on”

ok, now on with those that signed with the Warriors!! welcome, welcome to the ohana that will cherish what you accomplish in the classroom and on the field.

    jus, geev’um!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  62. jm2375 February 5, 2014 8:08 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Too bad about Tuileta. Wanted to see him play fb and vb for the Warriors. I’m sure the coaches are not happy campers right now. Maybe he’ll see the error of his ways in a year or so and “bounce back”.

  63. kaimiloa February 5, 2014 8:11 am

Maybe my comment was a little harsh. Good luck to Tuileta. You have to go where you will be happy.

  64. AdmrVT February 5, 2014 8:14 am

#58. Can’t be an athletic scholarship; otherwise, it would have to be a fb scholie.

Guess there’s always a way for these schools to get around NCAA scholarship limits due to probation if they have enough money. NCAA probation? Take away 8 scholarships? That’s ok. We have financial aid! “Wink, wink.”

  65. Buffoman February 5, 2014 8:16 am

Don’t know much about Lealao as a player, but his choosing Vandy is a great choice, if he is also a terrific student. That is a fine academic institution. Best to his academic future.

  66. kapakahi February 5, 2014 8:18 am

Good luck to Tui……but more concerned now about UH’s QB contingency recruiting plan(s).

  67. boolakanaka February 5, 2014 8:21 am

As to Larry, when you are 18 years old, and being on campus at USC–it at once and breathtaking and impressive. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a great SC fan, in either its academics or athletics. That said, the facilities, the ukupila national championship trophies and heismans—its very impressionable for any young person.

  68. kifi February 5, 2014 8:22 am

I’m very happy for Larry Tuileta. He made a great decision for him and his family. He’ll do great in L.A

  69. Bryson February 5, 2014 8:24 am

    Has Stubblefield signed?

  70. al February 5, 2014 8:25 am

    congratulations to tuileta!
no surprises here. didn’t want to spoil the fun, but, a little birdie told me a couple of days ago that the real lure was the opportunity to compete in the vb nationals in the socal.

  71. Whats up February 5, 2014 8:26 am

Tui as a Football walk-on will have to pay to play at USC just like anywhere else. He will have to pay until he hopefully to earns a scholie. There is no way around it with the NCAA, he has to have a Football scholie to play Football for free.

  72. al February 5, 2014 8:28 am

no panic…many schools have signing ceremonies. some during the lunch break.

both parents must sign the nli even if they are separated or divorced.

  73. al February 5, 2014 8:29 am

ahouse…are you implying that mariota was a walk on?
    not so.

  74. AllG February 5, 2014 8:30 am

Tuileta had a great opportunity and probably would have competed for a starting position this year. Don’t think he will ever get a min playing football at USC. My prediction is he gives up football in a couple of years and will be a full time volleyball player for USC.

  75. Inyoface February 5, 2014 8:31 am

He might change his mind at the last minute!

  76. 808Fringe February 5, 2014 8:34 am

If ya’ll wanna see the latest list of faxed LOIs to UH, check out their website. Currently up to about 14 signings.

  77. Pete Jek February 5, 2014 8:37 am

You win some, you lose some. No need be bitter about it. I’m as much a fan of UH as the next, and am proud of the degree i got there. But UH vs. USC is no contest in every aspect – both academically & in athletics. Only exception is weather maybe.

  78. AllG February 5, 2014 8:42 am

Any update on who plan B will be for the QB we are supposed to bring in?

  79. Rite80 February 5, 2014 8:44 am

I don’t get where some are accusing Tuileta of flopping. There is no obligation except on LOI day. Good luck to the young man.

  80. sofaking_blk February 5, 2014 8:46 am

Tuileta might have had a chance to start but he’s still have no CFB experience. We need a JC QB who is “game ready” right now. I mean WTF is Chow waiting on, the sooner he gets here the sooner he’ll be ready to play.

  81. Da Punchbowl Kid February 5, 2014 8:46 am

Good luck to Tuileta. Make Hawai’i proud.

This is why I don’t get very concerned about the recruit situation until I see who is actually on the field on game day, and how they and the team perform. Some will, some won’t – so what? Move on.

Okay, that’s a bald faced lie. I even groveled for Mr. Tuileta in a previous post. True, it’s a disappointing “loss”, but Tui has to do what his heart tells him. Best of luck to a super talented and deserving young man.

  82. Da Punchbowl Kid February 5, 2014 8:49 am

Now for the good news… bring on the guys who want to be Warriors! Thanks to those who signed and, hurry up to those who haven’t!

  83. Rite80 February 5, 2014 8:50 am

78-unfortunately plan B is to look for any QB who has not signed with any team today, or a transfer who no one else wants.

  84. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 8:50 am

Tui’s a bigger loss for the VBall team. Coach Wade has got to be pissed.

  85. Luki February 5, 2014 8:52 am

Good look Tuileta, you made a decision that was right for you and not some arm chair blogger at home. I think any kid who wants to leave home for whatever they’re reasons are is great. Recruiting, win some, lose some, and you carry on. I do hope though that we get more o-lineman though…

  86. jonj February 5, 2014 8:52 am

I think there is some really good players in this class. If we don’t sign some oline, a Rb and a QB (was hoping 2 qbs). This class needs wise will be worst in a long time. Can’t understand why we targeted mainly defensive players when the offense was equally bad if not worse!

  87. boolakanaka February 5, 2014 8:57 am

71– Actually no. “Other USC full scholarships and fellowships (primarily for low-income, minority and underrepresented students)” This is directly from the USC admissions. All Larry would have to do is gain full admission to the univeristy on his academic merit, and the institution could then make a scholarship offer based on the need, merit and a specific underrepresented group, or a combination thereof.

  88. kaimiloa February 5, 2014 8:57 am

Just because a coach doesn’t share his plans and recruiting strategy doesn’t necessarily mean that he lacks one or the plan is flawed. Things have been so silent lately that I imagine that Chow was working on something that needed secrecy. Maybe it doesn’t come out in our favor, maybe it does. Its ok not to want the guy as coach but he’s not an idiot. He has thought about all of the things we bring up.

  89. al February 5, 2014 8:58 am

we put up a lot of points last year. the problem was so did the opponent, more in fact.
the old addage is true….did you watch the superbowl?

  90. jonj February 5, 2014 9:00 am

Connor Wynn I think would be a good pick up at Qb. enrolled at riverside JC. Must be trying to start this season, play one year and have a 4 for 3 eligibility.

  91. al February 5, 2014 9:01 am

st did mention that we had two transfers and a jc guy on the list.

  92. sofaking_blk February 5, 2014 9:04 am

    #91

And I’ll say again, WTF is Chow waiting for. IMHO the starting QB is not on the current roster.

  93. what a grind February 5, 2014 9:04 am

Tui…well, good luck to you. You could have cemented your family name in Hawaii lore for years to come. From hero, to zero…in our hearts. But you can always change your mind!

Good people of Hawaii, the rich get richer, huh? It’s like our small town is being unfairly taxed by a rich and greedy landowner.

Welcome new Rainbow Warriors! Absolutely proud of your decision to play football for our humble Hawaii program. Shows your solid character.

  94. jonj February 5, 2014 9:06 am

89 we were 11th of 12 in scoring in the MWC. And majority of those points came in the 4th qt. Those last 2 teams we scored a ton on also fired their coaches cuz the teams were under performing.

  95. HODAD February 5, 2014 9:08 am

You can’t just put a recruited athlete (which Tui is) on academic scholie. I imagine he is eligible for financial aid based on the need formula used for every other student.

  96. boolakanaka February 5, 2014 9:11 am

95…Language from university, (this is in regards to another sport)

If a player is not on any athletic scholarship money as a DI volleyball student-athlete, then that player has the ability to attain any non-athletic scholarship support (within certain parameters, such as not receiving a high school booster club funded or community funded scholarship based upon athletic prowess). This means that academic, merit and need based scholarships are available to athletes.

  97. cocobean February 5, 2014 9:12 am

#84. The blog host probably agrees with you. He said on the radio Tui is the best VB player in country…I’m assuming he meant high school player.

  98. jonj February 5, 2014 9:12 am

Just read that tui had the Hawaii sign in front of him… Signed the loi… Paused then put the SC hat on. Kid didn’t just choose SC but slapped us in the face before he left. Lol… Hopefully it was jus chows face. But good luck to him!

  99. AllG February 5, 2014 9:12 am

We need a QB badly who can make quick decisions and get rid of the ball quickly. So scrambling ability would help as well. We don’t have a oline that you can just sit in the pocket a go through your options.

  100. Darren February 5, 2014 9:12 am

Perhaps it’s because many folks don’t particularly care for the abundant resources and riches of USC (unless you went to USC). They’re almost like the Punahou of west coast schools…wait a minute…

  101. A-House February 5, 2014 9:12 am

the 2 BCS transfers will NOT do UH any good as they must sit out 1 year unless they will or have graduated and have 2 years to play 2.

JC guy, unless very talented, will take 1 year to learn the system; especially if they miss and I assume he will miss Spring ball as classes are well underway at UH

alas, the same situation where UH does not or will not have the luxury of a “talented” QB who can come in and take it away from those already in the program – we saw that last year when UH faced true or red-shirt frosh who then BASHED the Rainbows

  102. AllG February 5, 2014 9:16 am

Such is the life of a Hawaii Warrior fan…always the brides maid, never the bride

  103. A-House February 5, 2014 9:17 am

as a coach, will you accept a ‘”bounce back” player who committed to you, then at the very last instance sign with another school?

interestingly, ST did not have Tuileta as probable signee in the paper or did I just miss his name – if so, ST knew before paper went to print that Tuileta was not signing with UH

  104. A-House February 5, 2014 9:18 am

    Darren:

are you not a USC grad?

if no, where the heck did I get that impression?

  105. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 9:18 am

101… if you been paying attention, the 2 BCS transfers are graduating in May and can play right away… Do you remember how SS did the same thing? Russell Wilson did the same thing going to Wisconsin.

  106. A-House February 5, 2014 9:20 am

private school or not, are they not all covered by the same NCAA guidelines?

or, can the 1% again do what they want and da hell with the rest?

who says life is fair; heck, even opportunity is “cultured” for the few

  107. AllG February 5, 2014 9:22 am

Glad to see we got Gifford’s LOI! We need as many DTs as we can get!

  108. A-House February 5, 2014 9:22 am

    #105:

who said that the 2 waiting in the wings are the 2 you make reference to?

I believe that one or more did say that they would be available – has Chow made up his mind that these are the 2 he extend an offer?

  109. Darren February 5, 2014 9:23 am

Col. A-House, nope…don’t think a single USC graduate would be posting on this blog.

  110. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 9:24 am

Like I said, Oregon St. and Pac 12 schools aren’t the ones Hawaii should be worried about… It’s Utah St. and other MWC schools now that are poaching Hawaii after our losing seasons…

    Jordan Silva to Nevada

  111. Creative721 February 5, 2014 9:24 am

This is really sad that Tuileta went to USC. He may never see playing time as a quarterback since USC obviously didn’t think he was good enough to offer a full-time scholarship for him. Also, in Volleyball, he’s short compared to the guys that they normally recruit (6ft 5in plus) so that also explains why they didn’t offer him a scholarship for Volleyball either. If you want my honest opinion, he messed up. He should have taken the full ride at UH and he had a shot at starting for two sports. Good luck affording tuition of 22k plus a semester plus books and housing. Talk about giving up a bird in the hand for two in the bush. LOL!!!

  112. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 9:25 am

Just keep in mind the freshmen recruiting class, not matter how good or bad or mediocre, won’t make any major impact until 2016. This is true for every school. So overreacting is a waste of time. The only players you can realistically expect make an impact in 2014 are the transfers. UH needed more transfers this year, but if they go too transfer heavy, it creates a gap in the roster age (not enough quality upperclassmen in 2011, 2012 & 2013).

The majority of the most talented players were underclassmen the past 2 years.

Chow’s makeshift first class of 2012 is just entering their 3rd year. 2013 entering their 2nd. It was pretty universal that 2013 was better than 2012 from a recruiting standpoint. So things are going to get better regardless of how this class shapes up in the coming weeks.

  113. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 9:25 am

Good news… UH just got Gifford…

  114. HawaiiMongoose February 5, 2014 9:26 am

Tuileta’s decision just tells me he cares more about academics and volleyball than football. He wants the USC degree, and is willing to gamble that he’ll receive enough financial aid to afford it. And he knows that as a walk-on to the USC volleyball team he’s good enough to get playing time. I’m sure he understands that he’ll probably never see the field for the Trojan football team. Sark is a good talker but it’s obvious just from looking at the current and incoming USC QB lineup (Cody Kessler, Max Browne, Jalen Greene, Ricky Town) that Tuileta’s role will be throwing passes to second-string receivers in practice.

  115. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 9:27 am

Manly Williams also.. but I think ST said he’s going to be a grayshirt. I think he’s got very good potential if he can get his academics in order.

  116. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 9:28 am

112, Freshman on D make impacts all the time…. JGW, Marrell Jackson, Nequan Phillips, KT, Trayvon Henderson all started games as FR.

  117. PowderPuff February 5, 2014 9:29 am

Congratulations to all the student-athletes who made their commitments today.

  118. Turkey February 5, 2014 9:29 am

When one door closes, another opens. Tuileta had the opportunity to lead Hawaii, obviously he wasn’t the guy. Says enough about his loyalty if he pulled the hat trick on his home state. Excited to see what QB(s) get brought in, as there are some interesting ones on the block. I suspect something is in motion after this flip flop. A much bigger loss for our volleyball team.

  119. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 9:30 am

Dejon Allen, John Waa, Elijah Tupai probably make an impact as redshirt FR. Ben Clarke started as redshirt FR.

  120. jmor56 February 5, 2014 9:30 am

Im not sure why people are panicing about the QB position when the Oline and defense were far worse. I saw promise in both Woolsy and Graham who both lacked D1 game experience but have the physical tools to do well. With better protection and polished reciever play I think either one can have a decent season.

Of bigger concern is the Oline, defense and over all lack of team speed.

  121. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2014 9:31 am

I didn’t realize Manly Williams was that tall.

  122. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2014 9:31 am

Dayton Furuta said he wants to be a middle linebacker, so grayshirting will help him gain some weight.

  123. sean February 5, 2014 9:32 am

    Welcome Rainbow Warriors!!

Good luck to those local kids that go away. We will follow and cheer for you as you represent Hawaii and your family!!

  124. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2014 9:32 am

Move over Mr. Honolulu. Apparently during this past weekend’s recruiting trip, the players were referring to Kaau Gifford’s dad as “Mr. Aloha.”

  125. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2014 9:33 am

UH already is working on Plan B. There might be something done by today or tomorrow.

  126. Whats up February 5, 2014 9:33 am

    87

I remember reading about a UH student had a academic scholie and made the Football team and was told if he played sports for the University he would stripped of his academic scholie per NCAA rules. USC is still under probation so I doubt they will be able to offer Tui anything other than a Volleyball scholie and the NCAA has a cap on how many mens Volleyball scholies per year and it’s not much. Tui would not be allowed to play Football he had a Volleyball scholie per NCAA. Or be striped of his Volleyball scholie to play football. He would have to have a Football scholie to play football for free. It’s a way the NCAA keeps the schools from cheating on the scholarships offered by high revenue generating sports like Football and Basketball.

  127. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 9:33 am

114… Sark is an excellent talker. Always pulled in good talent at UW, but he’s not a good in-game coach or tactician. I heard endless complaints from my UW friends and my one USC friend isn’t thrilled Sark got the job.

I think Sark’s top end is 10 wins at USC… which won’t be good enough to get him beyond his new contract with USC standards. He’s going to bring in outstanding talent to USC for the next guy to dominate with, especially when they get all their scholarships back.

111… I bet his parents thought they were finally going to get a break from paying massive tuition (Punahou is $20k this year), but then Tui goes to a school that’s more than double + now they gotta pay housing.

  128. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2014 9:34 am

Because Cesar Fermin wasn’t eligible this semester, he had to sign another letter of intent. He said he did that this morning.

  129. AllG February 5, 2014 9:37 am

ST…any surprise gets signing that we haven’t heard about? Or are we going to lose anyone we thought was signing?

  130. cocobean February 5, 2014 9:38 am

The QB situation with Graham and Woolsey is not as bad as people make it out to be. The three things they lacked are fixable – composure, blocking and a running game.

Pressure can make an all time great QB like Manning look very pedestrian. People got to remember Graham faced more pressure against USC and OSU than Manning did in the Super Bowl. The number of sacks and hits he took in the first two games knocked whatever composure he had out of him.

Our passing game under SS slowly improved as the blocking and running improved.

  131. Stephen Tsai February 5, 2014 9:38 am

    AIIG:
Might be a surprise or two in the next day or two.

  132. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 9:40 am

119… that’s the big X factor for the offense this year… I think at least two of those RS-FR guys will become starters this year. If the line can protect better, then I think UH will be fine offensively regardless of who starts at QB.

They are going to make mistakes like all freshmen do, but this group of RS-FR appear to be big upgrades. Clark will be a 3rd year starter at center, so he should be able to direct the new guys in the right direction pre-snap.

  133. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 9:42 am

Special emphasis on Clark being a 3rd year starter at center…

  134. 808Fringe February 5, 2014 9:45 am

Watched the PIAA NLI signing online and noticed “University of Colorado” when they introduced Devan Stubblefield. No worries though. We got ’em!

  135. Pete Jek February 5, 2014 9:46 am

    #131, good or bad surprise?

  136. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 9:46 am

Very excited to see Dany Mulanga in 2 years… He’s got the Kam Chancellor type frame. Could be a scary intimidator roaming the secondary.

  137. jm2375 February 5, 2014 9:51 am

Men’s volleyball scholarship limit is 4.5, spread over 18-22 student-athletes. As Tsai says, some get the equivalent of book money. Almost no one gets a full ride for volleyball.

  138. Da Punchbowl Kid February 5, 2014 9:57 am

Not as concerned as I was about the lack of O-line commits. Am told by reliable sources that led by Wa’a, we may see 2 or 3 RS freshmen starting on the O-line next year. That said, I do hope we pick up a couple more big guys sometime before the summer.

  139. Buffoman February 5, 2014 9:57 am

Glad to see a big smile on Tui Eli’s face. In previous blogs it was mentioned that he was a real sleeper of this class, particularly o-linemen. Now if we can keep that smile on his face as he pancakes his opponents that would be even better.

Looks like our defense has secured some real gamers. Competition for spots should be even greater as we get ready for the season.

If our defense can make marked improvements, we will be much more competitive. Very exciting.

  140. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 9:59 am

    137… Just a side note, Women’s VB gets 12.

Men’s Golf gets 4.5 scholarships while Women’s Golf gets 6. Coaches can split up the scholarships how they want to.

  141. Creative721 February 5, 2014 10:00 am

@Former UH Athlete: Actually Tuileta’s parents weren’t paying anything for school this year because he had an athletic scholarship from Punahou. I hope Tuileta’s parents saved up enough money because USC is around 45k a year plus books and housing.

  142. primo123 February 5, 2014 10:01 am

is this the biggest local recruiting class ever?

  143. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 10:02 am

The biggest potential improvement on defense during this offseason is the hiring of Clune. Clune’s effect on the team will be immediate. Gotta wait and see how today’s signees develop, learn and mature before they make impact on the field.

  144. al February 5, 2014 10:03 am

    st…i hope its the midwesterner.

  145. Pu'uwai February 5, 2014 10:05 am

Welcome to all the new recruits and good luck to those that didn’t sign with UH.

I’m thankful and elated for those who want to play for the Warrior ohana.

    Imua Rainbow Warriors!!!

  146. DancingBear February 5, 2014 10:07 am

Punahou doesn’t give athletic scholarships, it’s called something else.

  147. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 10:07 am

141… a partial schollie from VB isn’t going to pay for much at USC. I too, hope Tui’s parents saved money and/or have other financial aid lined up.

  148. kifi February 5, 2014 10:08 am

#144 – Wow! I hope it’s that one too. Incredible pedigree. Will be quite the battle in camp.

  149. Kris February 5, 2014 10:14 am

Come one ST, tell us what are the big suprises? Did we lose anyone beside Tuitele

  150. jimmy the lock February 5, 2014 10:21 am

  151. Creative721 February 5, 2014 10:22 am

  152. kapakahi February 5, 2014 10:22 am

    #110,

Could understand Utes…..like for Luavai…..but don’t understand picking Nevada.

  153. kapakahi February 5, 2014 10:24 am

    #131,

    Besides QB, what about OL?

  154. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 10:24 am

Luavai hasn’t signed yet… so still hope… but hes LDS so not sure if it really matters. We seem to have better success recruiting guys after their mission like Moleni.

  155. kifi February 5, 2014 10:39 am

#148 – But then again West Coast Qb wouldn’t be so bad. Gotta check with my guru Jeezy.

ST…Is Tigi Hill done then? did he not make it?

  159. kakaako kid February 5, 2014 10:46 am

I like how Sarkisian has positioned himself to make a run at Canton K. next year. No worry coach Chow, we will still be there to give the aloha to our boys. Congrats to all the new Rainbow Warriors, make this opportunity memorable. Go Bows!

  160. jimmy the lock February 5, 2014 10:46 am

A Keoni Football type QB would be a good get.

Has any Mater Dei QB ever played for Hawaii before?

  162. gobows February 5, 2014 10:52 am

Who are the 3 qb’s looking to transfer?

  163. sofaking_blk February 5, 2014 10:53 am

Does the name Colt Brennan comes to mind.

  164. haka February 5, 2014 10:53 am

Welcome to all the new WARRIORS!!!!!!
Mahalo for believing and wanting to represent UH and the state of Hawaii!
I think the recruits are excellent and a nice blend of local and mainland talent! Imua!

Good luck to Tui. That said, he could have had the opportunity to play for a volleyball national championship here as much as there. Obviously he didn’t believe. Needless to say, the creative funding of USC will be in effect. C’est la vie!

As unusual as it is, USC did give Micah Christensen a full ride for volleyball as they wanted him bad.

Now we wait in anticipation of the surprises!

  165. kapakahi February 5, 2014 11:00 am

    #159,

Stanford is Canton K’s primary destination……to join his brother Luke.

  166. haka February 5, 2014 11:03 am

Not that it has any immediate impact, but I don’t see that mission Utah receiver Richards listed as signed.

  167. HawaiiMongoose February 5, 2014 11:08 am

Just lost another Tui… Tui Unga has signed with Fresno State. Damn.

Whew. False alarm. Sorry about that.

  170. 808bowler February 5, 2014 11:11 am

Heard max whittek looking to Hawaii. he graduates this spring and can play right away. has 2 years left.

  171. sofaking_blk February 5, 2014 11:12 am

    @167..

I thought Tui Unga was already enrolled at UH.

  172. boolakanaka February 5, 2014 11:13 am

126, 141, FUHA and et al…To clarify, if you one were to get any partial aid related to an athletic scholarship, e.g. partial V-Ball, then it would count against any school aid or in some instance disallow you from other institutional aid. That said, any student-athlete who receives any amount of athletic financial aid is considered a “counter” per NCAA rules. Once a student-athlete is considered a “counter” there are situations in which other types of financial aid may be required to be “counted” as athletic financial aid.

Any scholarships that a student-athlete will be receiving from groups such as a Rotary or Kiwanis club, a church youth group, or a high school booster club should be sent to the financial aid office of the college the student-athlete is attending so that the scholarship can be processed properly. In addition, NCAA rules may require that the donor organization of the scholarship be required to complete a questionnaire to determine whether athletic participation was part of the criteria for the awarding of the scholarship.

In addition, if a student-athlete also receives an academic scholarship from their college or university due to their high school GPA or their ACT or SAT test score, the fact that they are already an NCAA “counter” may affect the value or receipt of their academic scholarship. Once a student-athlete is a “counter” all other financial aid received from their institution is required to “count” as if it is an athletic scholarship, unless the student-athlete qualifies for an exemption based on the level of their GPA, their class rank, or their ACT or SAT test score.

In Larry’s situation, if he were a need based student or academically merit receiver, he can take that in lieu of a scholarship. Does not happen all the time, but it does not disallow you from opting to taking another financial package, you just can’t stack them all together. This is just my own hunch, but he may have been already qualified for need based aid (low income)and had strong grades (academics), which would validate an alternative form of aid, and juxtaposed against a partial scholly, it would provide both a more viable financial option to take need based aid or a partial scholarship or the sorts.

  173. sofaking_blk February 5, 2014 11:13 am

    @170..

I’ll take Whittek, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

  174. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 11:14 am

How many scholarships are still left? As if now, I see 22 on the list

I’m sure the staff will be reserving a couple for late additions.

  175. haka February 5, 2014 11:15 am

Didn’t know that DE Luke Shawley is a former Navy SEAL! Sweet!
Luke “Seal” Shawley….Nice name for a DE to seal the edge!

    Max Wittek is considering Texas.

    http://www.burntorangenation.com/2014/2/5/5382834/max-wittek-texas-longhorns-usc-trojans-transfer

I doubt UH is even on his radar screen, though I’d love to be wrong.

  178. sofaking_blk February 5, 2014 11:18 am

I think Chow is dead set on TG, nothing is gonna change that.

  179. haka February 5, 2014 11:19 am

Whoa, the UH website lists Tui Unga as 6-5 260! I know jeezy33 said he would play DL, but didn’t know he had that kind of size. Nice…..even if inflated a bit.

  180. transfer is in February 5, 2014 11:19 am

    Jerry RiceCakes will join us

  181. tui Unga February 5, 2014 11:22 am

6-3 215 in 2012…maybe he grew? Maybe he will be 7 foot by next year?

  182. haka February 5, 2014 11:24 am

    whatever

  183. justsomeguy February 5, 2014 11:32 am

#179 Biologically, males generally aren’t done growing until around 22 years of age. When I was a kid, my neighbors son Anthony graduated high school at 5’11, now he’s 6’5.

  184. kapakahi February 5, 2014 11:32 am

Other than George Ornellas way back in the 90’s, the college choices with the top local HS prospects that come down to NLI Day always seem to go against UH……

Perry, Alualu, Brostek, Taliulu…..and now Tui.

  185. AllG February 5, 2014 11:37 am

    184…don’t forget Keali’ikipi

  186. AllG February 5, 2014 11:41 am

With a 1 win team I guess you can’t expect to have the greatest recruiting class. We have a hand full of guys who have potential but most will probably provide depth and might not be more then career back ups

  187. kapakahi February 5, 2014 11:43 am

    #185,

Yup…..almost forgot about big Wade. Now I feel even worse…..Lol!

BTW TH supposedly still needs to get his AA…..with a qualifying 2.5 overall GPA.

  188. jimmy the lock February 5, 2014 11:47 am

Whatever happened to that refrigerator RB from the Big Island, Fangupo, where he stay?

  191. jimmy the lock February 5, 2014 11:59 am

    Thanks kapakahi.

  192. Andrew February 5, 2014 12:13 pm

Would have been awesome to get Tuileta. As a fan of course I wish he picked UH, but I don’t blame him at all for choosing USC. I would have done the same if I was in his position. Best of luck to him.

  193. Rodney February 5, 2014 12:23 pm

    Not worried.Chow has something
    going on,just gotta be patient.
OL is fine We need a Qb(leader)
Have feeling Football will be thrown
    a lot next yr.
    Just a feeling!

  194. Andrew February 5, 2014 12:26 pm

    194.

I agree. A recruit can be highly regarded, but we will not know how good of a college player they will be until they get on the field. I have high hopes for the development of the offense under Chow and Wynn.

  195. sofaking_blk February 5, 2014 12:36 pm

    @194

I agree but you have to admit that the Offense didn’t start rolling until SS took over. I’m just not sold on any QB on our roster, that’s why we need to bring in some JC QBs and let them go at it, may the best man win.

  196. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 12:46 pm

    Donyeh Patterson possibly to Hawaii??

  197. sofaking_blk February 5, 2014 12:46 pm

    The common strategy for rebuilding any program is;
Year 1. Lose big-2012, we were pretty much blown out of every game.
Year 2. Lose close-2013, we lost alot of close games.
Year 3. Win close-2014, we have to start winning close games or it over for Chow.
Year 4. Win big-2015, a new coaching staff might be in place.

  198. Bryson February 5, 2014 12:48 pm

  202. Andrew February 5, 2014 12:54 pm

    195.

Yeah SS definitely did peak at the end of the 2013 season. I think a big part of that was due to the OL developing and getting better as the season went along. Once they were able to protect him a lot better, then we could start seeing the real SS. It’s hard to really blame Graham for his struggles though. He started to show improvement at the Nevada game and get things rolling, but that’s of course when ge got injured. Moreover, once he got healthy enough to play, he lost all that playing time due to the injury that he had no time to develop more. Didn’t help also that once he made a mistake, Chow yanked him and put SS which of course is understandable since SS was starting to play very well.

  203. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 12:58 pm

From Hawaii Football twitter acct about an hour ago:

  207. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 1:13 pm

    Breakdown:

    17 True Freshmen
    6 Transfers

Plus, 18 others coming off redshirt year (both standard and medical). Most notably OLinemen: Wa’a, Allen, Tupai & Hollis.

  208. al February 5, 2014 1:20 pm

    bryson…what do you mean?
we got our “tui” as in eli’s coming!

  209. kaimiloa February 5, 2014 1:21 pm

I think we did well with this class. If I would stop reading message boards, I’d be even happier. Considering our record, we landed some players that can help right away and others who have excellent qualities and need to improve others. We lost a couple of verbal commits but it doesn’t seem any worse than other years. If our QB situation was more set there wouldn’t be so much fretting about Tuileta. Its possible that he becomes a starter at some point but he isn’t the QB we need, right now.

  210. Moocher February 5, 2014 1:30 pm

i guess maybe the thinking is if the d can limit points and o-line can limit sacks and hurries, along with the greatly experienced and talented receiving corp…then TG will be alright. it seems to me unlike SS first year, tg will have more of a stronger and wiser supporting cast to help hide the flaws and maximize his strengths

  211. whitey February 5, 2014 1:31 pm

Good job and congratulations to Coach Dhow, his staff, and the Warriors.

  212. whitey February 5, 2014 1:32 pm

    dang finger, Coach Chow

  213. Bryson February 5, 2014 1:32 pm

Haha Al the other Tui…Not the one who was a man of their word

  214. A-House February 5, 2014 1:35 pm

If Chow knew Tuileta was going to sign with USC, when did he start on plan B to get a QB in?

seems like others knew as early as Sun or Mon.

but, ST gave us hope that it will be a done deal in one or two days – west coast or mid-west?

  215. Turkey February 5, 2014 1:40 pm

It’s exciting to think what the offense may look like next year. Iosefa in the backfield with St. Juste shifting all around. Kirkwood is the deep threat and Harding is our sure handed slot. Pedroza was suppose to start at Utah so I’m hoping he turns out to be our gamebreaker. The Oline will only improve in year 2 under Naeole. All we need is a facilitator. I think to many’s surprise, Graham will be able to accomplish this. He goes into the season with almost no expectations compared to last year, hopefully making it easier to perform. It looks like our D has some size and speed and we have added some depth to the receiving corps. While many are spreading the doom and gloom disease, we really do have a lot of which to be hopeful. I’m excited!

  216. Da Punchbowl Kid February 5, 2014 1:54 pm

    #215 – Turkey –

What a wise gobbler you are! Gotta agree.

  217. Former UH Athlete February 5, 2014 1:57 pm

215.. Don’t forget Kemp and Haynes. Both guys showed they can get open deep also. Pedroza will be intriguing. Sounds like a gamer.

Well, at least the defense can’t get worse, so up is the only way to go. I think the DLine will be much improved and Clune’s multi-faceted defense will keep opposing OC’s guessing. LB’s is a bit of question but it sounds like UH has better athletes this year. I think the DBs will be fine. I think Clune will help them out more. The corners just weren’t quite good enough to be left alone on islands as much as TK had them.

Plenny tings look guud on pehpah, bottom line, show me.

Every recruiting year the prospects look good, the hype, the talk, the predicted won/loss record, now is the time to step up and show me.

If not, there is always next year. 😆

  225. Hilo-Warrior February 5, 2014 2:16 pm

    Aloha Tsaikos.

The news of the players that Coach Chow is getting is making my night much warmer here in chilly Texas.

I am very excited to see some of these guys get in and work already. Like I said last season and before, Chow is putting a very decent team together. They just need to mesh together and execute. We have been a younger team lately but we will be a good team this year. A few plays here and there last season was the difference between out 1-12 season and a much better season.

  226. Mokihana February 5, 2014 2:19 pm

By Punahou standards think USC more prestigious than UH. Just hope his promised spot is nt forever on the bench.

    Patterson is a warrior !!

  228. tom-warriornation February 5, 2014 2:22 pm

Not counting our new recruits; would our starting OL be:

Wa’a, Allen, Tupai & Hollis with Ben Clarke?

  229. kapakahi February 5, 2014 2:24 pm

    #227,

While committed, sounds like still might need to get his LOI to sign and submit to UH…..due to the late offer.

Gotta hope that no other late offers to consider.

  230. kapakahi February 5, 2014 2:26 pm

    #228,

Afusia will still be a starter.

  231. Darren February 5, 2014 2:26 pm

Afusia, Loyd and Shigematsu will not be giving up starting spots without a fight. Great competition in the position battles can only help the betterment of the team…

  232. Marleysdad February 5, 2014 2:30 pm

Jeezy, what other offers did he have? Great get.

    Tui…..signs with USC……..what does a walk-on sign? A loan? Until he enrolls, he’s free to flip-flop again.

What happens if Wade offers a full ride VB schollie?

  233. tom-warriornation February 5, 2014 2:31 pm

  236. tom-warriornation February 5, 2014 2:37 pm

  237. kapakahi February 5, 2014 2:40 pm

Shigematsu started season at LT…..but then got moved inside to RG…..behind Dew. Will be competing with Lefotu, Wa’a, and Allen for starting RG spot.

  238. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 2:44 pm

    232. I’m not sure. I just know he Washington and Boise were interested but Washington commits all signed I think so wasn’t offered by them.

Rivals updated that he’s committed… But nothing is official until the LOI is in….

I think Tuileta is a free agent all the way until he enrolls in classes at USC.. I’m pretty sure he is still free to sign anywhere

  239. Darren February 5, 2014 2:46 pm

How’d Patterson end up falling through the cracks? It’s not like he’s some unknown name (#90 in California Top 100), but come today, he said that Hawaii was his only available offer(?). He mentioned that he has family here too…

  241. Andrew February 5, 2014 2:48 pm

    226.

Spending that much money for their kid to go Punahou, I would hope they would pick the prestigous school like USC over UH. Not knocking UH which is a good school, but I would think parents send their kids to private school to elevate them for a better chance at getting into those prestigous mainland colleges. Of course that can easily be achieved by going to public schools since I think the effort the student puts in matters more than the high school they are that, but of course it helps to be at Punahou or Iolani.

  245. Boolakanaka February 5, 2014 2:52 pm

Marley and Jeezy, you make insightful points. He has most options still open, perhaps even UH. It’s a long way til
Fall, and well, spots will be open at various schools. Especially for a two sport all-state, pre-qualified athlete. As far as i can see, he opened more doors than closed ones…

  246. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 2:53 pm

    239. Offers are tricky. if you check out the rivals database, it will list over a 100 kids with Hawaii offers. Some offers are contingent of committing right away to fill out a slot. Guys like Malik hutchings, Emmett Tela, etc had Hawaii offers at some point… Waited too long and those offers went to someone else…

I think Patterson was in a similar situation where he had offers during the fall and didn’t commit.

  247. Buffoman February 5, 2014 2:58 pm

I can’t recall but who besides UH made offers to LT for the QB slot at their respective schools?

  250. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 3:03 pm

    243. Honestly, I been going against what I normally do when posting and haven’t even checked him out till right now… I just tried to get the info out as soon as possible and stuck with the recruiting sites offers, rankings as a source. He looks physical like he could convert into a safety. I noticed he made 2nd team all league DB. I don’t see top end speed either but he does have long strides which make him probably makes his speed deceiving.

Gotta look more into him though when i have time.

  251. Leahi2 February 5, 2014 3:13 pm

#227 Jeezy33: Who is Patterson anyway? You seem very happy about him. Where is he from and what position does play? How big is he (ht and wt)? What are his credentials?
I mean is he an all star from another league? Can he run fast? Knowing your posts here, there must be some very good news! So hurry up and spill the beans if you will!

  252. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 3:14 pm

    251. I don’t know much about him at all… Just trying to get excited about something on a overall boring signing day…. he could be playing the twitter world for a fool for all I know…

Rivals lists him as a commit. He has a 3 star rating… Basically all I know right now…

  253. jmor56 February 5, 2014 3:16 pm

  258. Manoa2 February 5, 2014 3:29 pm

USC is one of the most generous schools in the country with financial aiid– granst. Without violating NCAA rules, Tuileta can receive a full ride scholarship as a walkon and it will not count against either the football team or the volleyball team. Under the rules, he will give up other financial aid and his athletic scholarhip will then count against whatever sport awards him the scholarship. This is also true at Hawaii– there have been several walkons n football and other sports, including soccer and volleyball, who get financial aid, but maybe not the amount that USC can give.

  259. jeezy33 February 5, 2014 3:37 pm

Transferred to Carson HS Colts from Dominguez HS Dons after his junior season……so might already know Dejon Allen.

  263. My take February 5, 2014 3:51 pm

I don’t think Tuileta is a div 1 QB. Might have been the best volleyball player Hawaii has seen in a long time. Not sure where the football team could put him. He’s not going to be a QB at SC.

  264. kapakahi February 5, 2014 3:55 pm

Nice to see recruiting efforts paying off in the South Bay……where Carson HS (Patterson), Mira Costa HS (Jahlani Tavai), and Serra HS (Malachi Mageo) all located.

Gotta believe that Chow still has strong recruiting connections in the South Bay…..where his Cali home is located…..since also near SC and UCLA.

  265. Shoko February 5, 2014 4:02 pm

Nice recruiting class. Welcome aboard, boys!

And good luck to those that chose other schools.

A few walk-ons that have had success at the next level that come to mind are Brandon Weeden, Clay Mathews and Aaron Rodgers.

  266. Warrior Dave February 5, 2014 4:12 pm

Lots of new posters today. Something tells me it’s the same person posting under different names. Get a life please.

Anyway, thanks to Boolakanaka and Manoa 2 for explaining how financial aid works. The only way to make it clearer is by saying that LT is going to USC as a preferred walk-on. Although not on athletic scholarship, he will receive enough financial aid to cover the FULL cost of attending USC. So his parents will not have to pay a dime for his education. USC is a great school and good luck to this young man. Unfortunately it doesn’t appear he will attend UH, he will receive a wonderful education and that will open doors for him when he graduates.

I jus wonder why UH cannot offer the same deal with some incoming players if applicable.

  267. jonj February 5, 2014 4:24 pm

I think another good HS QB is Ty Gangi. Plays in s tough division and had a 10-3 record. Id post his highlights but I’m on a phone.

  269. boolakanaka February 5, 2014 4:43 pm

266-Warrior Dave, in short they could, but a couple of things may not be in place for it to be copasetic. The unfortunate reality is that many players would not be going to school, if not for an athletic scholarship.

Thus, they would have to fall under several of these germane areas: a good if not great student, fit within income/asset guidelines to considered need based and possibly coming from an underrepresented group. In Larry’s case, I don’t know for this fact, but it would not surprise me if he was not the type of student that USC would have recruited in any event (i.e not even consider his athletic abilities) he comes from one of the top prep schools, I am assuming has good scores and grades, and from underrepresented group. Now, if all of this is in fact true, and if his is family is under median guidelines, roughly, family per capita income at less than 85K annually, at least at my institution (boola U), he would get a total full ride….tuition, books, R&B and even a computer and airfare to and fro–so, in some ways, if the situation is right, the school aid can be just as good, or perhaps better than an athletic scholly. But, no doubt, you have to hit the items, I mentioned above.

  270. Derek February 5, 2014 4:43 pm

In my mind, John Ursua is good enough to play Division I basketball, but he is slated to be on football scholarship when he returns from his mission next year. Ala, Miah Ostroswski.
A wide receiver and a point guard.

I had a feeling Murphy’s Law was going to kick in and I’ve been saying all along that we should have gotten a second QB for this recruiting class. Now, we don’t have any and Chow is left to scramble and he needs to find a diamond in the rough and get lucky, like really lucky. How many good QBs are still left out there? Maybe Tuileta, even if he signed with Hawaii was not going to be the answer, who knows. Maybe he would have been excellent, who knows. One thing is certain, he was the best QB in the State of Hawaii.
At this point, I am not all that confident with the 3 QBs in the program right now and that’s based on what they have produced so far. I’d like to think that Woolsey will improve this year. Graham, to me, has stage fright. When the lights shines on him, he’s like a deer frozen. Higgins is an enigma. He was the starting QB at St. Louis ahead of Mariota and look at what happened after that. He can’t be that bad, is he? Unless, Chow can’t do better at the QB position, our fans are doomed to 2-10 or 2-11 this next season even though, technically, we have a better overall team. That one critical position says it all, it’s either Holy Crap or Holy Grail.

  271. Whats up February 5, 2014 5:08 pm

Chow looked somewhat mildly perturbed when the subject matter of losing Tui was brought up by Cherry.

    Probably perturbed at Sark.

  274. kaimiloa February 5, 2014 5:46 pm

I don’t think Chow is starting to scramble for a QB. There have been other QBs on our list all along and I’m sure he knew that losing Tuileta was a possibility.

  275. me February 5, 2014 6:01 pm

Tui has no class. His word like other athletes before him who verbally committed to UH then went elsewhere on signing day was worthless, He screwed UH and our state more than the others who turned down UH outright,If you dont wanna go here, then dont take someones else’s spot..I dont follow the careers of these turncoats. I only support those who stay and play for the home team

  276. PowderPuff February 5, 2014 6:16 pm

Wow….well, while I wouldn’t word it that way, from a public relations/reputation management perspecrive, it could’ve been handled a hundred different other ways. And that’s all I will say.

  277. PowderPuff February 5, 2014 6:16 pm

    Perspective….

  278. Warrior Dave February 5, 2014 6:17 pm

I think what makes Tuileta’s defection difficult is that he committed as a junior and lost him when he took his trip last week. I think he was solid until then. Good luck young man.

Thanks for the additional comments Boo.

  279. boolakanaka February 5, 2014 6:18 pm

Just as an even further clarification on why Larry would turn-down a full scholarship. So, lets take an example like Stanford athletics, summarily, Stanford’s athletic scholarships are almost all fully endowed, so they are able to offer a full complement of scholarships in every non revenue sport without worrying about funding.

Now, I am not saying he is being recruited by Stanford for volleyball, unlike most other schools, despite the pressures on Title IV, it is one of the rare schools, that is able to provide full scholarships outside of the big two: basketball and football. Thus, he could go to such a place, if he was indeed being recruited for volleyball…In fact, the total amount of full scholarships at Stanford is in the 325 plus range…..

  280. 76SOUTH February 5, 2014 6:20 pm

It’s not the fact Tuileta picked USC that is disappointing to me, it’s how he decided to rub it in and play out the snub in such in your face drama. Very disappointing for me to see.

  284. Fan February 5, 2014 6:35 pm

I was disappointed by by Tuileta’s decision but not surprised. When opportunity knocks it makes sense to respond. I wish he would have stayed and had visions of the vball program in particular moving to another level. Much harder to predict how good a D1 QB he will be. So I wish him well and hope his gifts serve him well. I also hope we recruit someone who makes us forget all about the disappointment today.

  289. kaimiloa February 5, 2014 7:17 pm

That’s sure not how I was raised. The honorable thing would be to call Chow up the night before and say “thanks but no thanks”. Not put on a show at the ceremony.

  291. Haleakala February 5, 2014 7:27 pm

289- I agree. I would not hire someone if I knew that person was not honorable and only wanted the limelight.

  292. Kanole February 5, 2014 7:37 pm

Tuileta chose USC after giving a verbal commitment to UH. That’s his choice, but why couldn’t he be humble about it instead of wearing a USC cap. No need to rub it in.

  293. Viking February 5, 2014 7:47 pm

  294. ai-eee-soos February 5, 2014 7:47 pm

Norm Chow’s staff as a grad assistant.

  295. al February 5, 2014 7:52 pm

…and as a reminder of sorts, today through tomorrow is the tailend of the dead period. coaches are limited to one call and only one call to any prospective recruit.

so don’t be clamoring about why we not doing anything.
sit back relax and sip on a peroni.

  296. me February 5, 2014 7:56 pm

If things dont work out well for Tui at USC in a few years, whoever is the head coach at UH should not take him back at all, not even as a walk on, No class to verbally commit and then renege, Shows how selfish he is

  297. Shoko February 5, 2014 8:03 pm

Wonder if Vanderbeek put in a good word with Chow about Hagan since they are both graduates of Cal.

  298. Shoko February 5, 2014 8:06 pm

That’s the inherent risk one takes when offering high school kids with early offers. Although, I will admit that losing Tuileta so close to NLI day stings. Unfortunately, that’s part of the recruiting process.

  299. al February 5, 2014 8:11 pm

what hurts is that for two years he told norm and Charlie he is solid. even up to the day he was on vacation.

  301. al February 5, 2014 8:21 pm

  302. Fan February 5, 2014 8:25 pm

I get the frustration and feeling snubbed and maybe disrespected by Tui’s signing process. But he’s a kid and no doubt new at being held as a celebrity. It is us who elevate these sports figures to celebrity status. I guess it is annoying when they don’t respond to our attention with humility and respect. But we all have to grow up in our own ways. I have no idea what it feels like to be called upon by big time programs with attractive offers when you are a teenager. I imagine it would have gone to my head and I might have acted funny too. But no worries, life is generous in offering us all lessons in humility sooner or later.

  303. Shoko February 5, 2014 8:25 pm

I’ve heard of prospects, including their parents, right up to the last day of contacts telling (or lying to) the coaches they are solid in their commitments then change they’re minds.

If there is someone to blame, it should be the coach (Sarkasian) that engages in last-minute poaching. Then again, you got a newly hired head coach who is behind the recruiting game.

One guy that comes to mind is new Vandu head coach Derek Mason. Think I read that he poached a lot of recruits that were solid commits to other schools.

  304. Shoko February 5, 2014 8:28 pm

Speaking of ronin, I recently saw a samurai movie called “Hara-kiri” on Netflix. I thought it was an excellent movie.

  305. Shoko February 5, 2014 8:30 pm

Actually, it was called “Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai”

Hanshirô, a destitute samurai, asks to commit hara-kiri at the estate of feudal lord Kageyu. Knowing the dishonor this will bring to his house, Kageyu begs him to reconsider, unaware of the shocking truth behind Hanshirô’s choice of locale.

  306. Shoko February 5, 2014 8:32 pm

    Anyway, time of schleep!

Too bad about Tuileta. Unfortunately for him, Cody Kessler is the unquestioned QB for USC and he’s going to be a Junior this fall. So he has 2 years left. USC also has a couple of QBs already ahead of him including redshirt freshman, Max Browne who is a 5 star rated QB. I don’t think Tuileta will be seeing the field, if ever, in a Trojan uniform. But he will play a lot of volleyball for them. Maybe volleyball is his first love!

Don’t forget that there is strong pressure for Punahou kids to “get off the rock” and attend school on the mainland (being founded by missionaries). For a Punahou (or Iolani for that matter) grad to attend UH is considered as a letdown or disappointment by many associated with those schools and also many on the outside. That’s just the way it is.

Tui is going to ride the pine for a minimum of two years. He’s not passing Kessler and there are high profile QBs already there. Tui will be stuck at the bottom of the depth chart and will be nothing more than a scout QB for USC. The politics of being a walk-on will keep him down also. Odds aren’t good for Tui to pass Max Browne or Conner Sullivan even if he outplays them.

When his parents get tired of forking over $45k + housing + extras only to watch their son cheer on his team from the sidelines, the door will open for his return.

    308… That’s very true.

While we’re on the topic of poaching… How about the poach job Lame Kiffin did for Alabama…. He walked right into Auburn for a house visit and got one of their best commits to flip from Auburn to Alabama.

I think we just learned why Saban hired Kiffin… For this exact reason. As much of a dork and poor playcaller he is, the guy can flat out recruit. Bringing in talent was not his downfall at USC. I’m just curious to see how tight of a leash Saban has on Kiffin to mess with the offense. Bama has never had a dynamic offensive style, it’s a pretty simple offense, but well executed with the best athletes in the country. As long as Kiffin doesn’t try to get too fancy, it’s going to be hard to screw up Alabama’s offense.

It is obvious to me and maybe to Tuileta that he is going to USC for volleyball and not football. Say all you want about riding the pine, and never seeing the playing field as a QB. etc. He’s a smart young man and will get a chance to play volleyball and get a good education.

Lastly, the logo on the name plate was put there by PIAA in advance. I can’t Ame him for that but I am wondering what he was signing for the TV cameras. Would be sick if it was the UH LOI and then put on the USC cameras for TV. But at this point I don’t care and am moving on.

Every year there is a local kid who plays it up on stage…Jeremy Perry,VJ Fehoko, and now Larry Tuileta…what ever happened to the other two guys…

  314. kev-1 February 5, 2014 10:28 pm

I am not as worried about Tuileta choosing USC over UH as I am with the fact that it seems so many consider him “Plan A.” I don’t mean to badger him, because I think he is a great athlete. But in my opinion, his fame will come on the volleyball court, not the football field. Next.

Geez…I hope Dakota Torres and his family don’t feel disappointed about his choice to attend UH. There’s a place for everyone, and all should be happy that the kid gets to attend college on scholarship and play the sport that he loves.

Warrior Dave: thanks for the logical, reasonable, well-considered post about Tui. First, I attended the PIAA ceremony this morning. He did not do anything to embarrass UH at the ceremony. Unlike many high profile recruits who sit in front of the ESPN cameras with multiple caps on the table in front of them, and then proceed to pick one and then another for “dramatic” effect (when did this lame practice start, anyway?), Tui’s nameplate PREPARED BY PIAA displayed the UH logo. After signing some papers, he put on a cap like virtually every other football signee. I don’t know when the nameplate was prepared, and I don’t know when Tui last talked to PIAA about his decision making process. It was obvious from his post event interview that it was an emotional decision that was made by him and his family.
A lot can happen in the last few days of the recruiting period, which includes a Quiet Period and a Dead Period. USC’s new staff, unlike many other coaching staffs, was very aggressive in closing out the recruiting process. They won’t be making excuses about coming in late to the process.
And yes, I think it is reasonable to assume that Tui and his family know the costs of attending USC, and are aware of the present and future depth charts (2015 QB recruit Town announced over a week ago). So many posters make it seem as those matters will come as a surprise to his family……..
Yes, disappointed that we won’t see him as a Warrior, but c’mon guys. Let’s focus on our new recruits. For example, Jahlani Tavai has the makings of a real over-achiever. And Castro can make a big impact this coming season–we could never have signed a player like him out of high school.

For whatever it’s worth with physical stature, I’m liking the overall size we got in some of these guys, especially with the LBs and secondary.

  321. yojimbo February 6, 2014 6:35 am

well, it seems the consensus here that tui may be a bench warmer for the football team, and that his best opp is with vb. two questions:

if his best option is with vb, why didn’t the usc vb coach offer a scholarship?
if sark likes him so much, why didn’t he recurit him at uw?

any reasonable answers to the above questions?

  322. 3-Prong February 6, 2014 6:44 am

Good Morning from “Lob City”. Too bad Griffin couldn’t win on “Free Griffin Force Cape Night”. Labron is as advertised. Amazing athlete. He would put Megaton to shame in pads.

  323. boolakanaka February 6, 2014 7:02 am

321…Yojimbo. These are great considerations. Which leads me to my original posit, that is to say, that just on a pure admission perspective, (not considering any athletics) Larry is the type of student USC would have already targeted to be part of its incoming freshmen class. If so, it would create a great incentive to recruit him, as the monies would come outside of the athletic department. Again, what is assumed is the following: he has very strong grades/scores; from an underrepresented minority group; and falls within need guidleines. If so, there is nothing to lose from Sark’s side, and he could get large parts of his tution and R&B, totally covered.

Many posters think he or rather his parents are going to pay full freight at USC—which is not the case. Average aid package is the mid $20,000, and if you qualify and they really wanted you to attend, they can pick-up the entire cost. So the idea that his parents would pay full cost, given how these things work, is rather remote.
