  11. SteveM February 6, 2013 4:54 am

posting my reply to 310Dude that was lost when yesterday’s blog entry closed:

310Dude — thanks for your location. The southern or “lower” California Tsai-kos … a.k.a. the Lo-Cal Tsai-kos, often had Calf Calls in Torrance. The “Lo-Cal” and “Calf Call” is a play on “Cattle Calls” since they claim to be smaller in size than the original group. 🙂

Click here to see the Lo-Cal Tsai-kos

They have been kinda quiet recently, but they are lurking. 🙂

  12. PolyMom February 6, 2013 4:59 am

Come on Warriors. Let’s heat up that fax machine.

  16. 3-Prong February 6, 2013 5:14 am

Bobby C reports that according to people in the know, they would be shocked if any of the top recruits changed their mind. Top receuits supposedly solid. We’ll see.

Congratulations to all of the above top 25 recruits on a The Warrior Beat blog entry for February 6, 2013.

  30. Chicken Grease February 6, 2013 5:58 am

Remember ya’ll feel for the recruits today, now . . . no nitpicking and whining on the new Warrior ‘uns come, say, early September.

Dunno what’s so exciting about waching someone sign, unless you’re their family and/or friends. Just[e] need a list of who signed, please 🙂 .

  31. Chicken Grease February 6, 2013 6:02 am

    * “watching” . . . not “waching.” [your clothes.]

Sources also mentioning Ole Miss getting a (if not the) lion’s share of wanted recruits.

Ole Miss? Hard to get excited about that school. Do YOU see them in a national championship in the next four years?

  32. Hawfan February 6, 2013 6:03 am

  33. WarriorMojo February 6, 2013 6:08 am

ST, UH Athletics lists Barker, Henderson, Kemp, Miller and Tupai.

No mention of Saint Juste. Cause for concern?

  34. Shoko February 6, 2013 6:09 am

definitely a proud day for all parents of student-athletes that stay or go away for school.

It was no surprise that running back Diocemy Saint Juste was the first to submit a faxed copy of his letter intent.

No cause for concern if ST posts it.

  36. d1shima February 6, 2013 6:14 am

Best of luck to all who are making a big decision today…it’s a lifetime decision, not a four-year decision.

  37. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 6:20 am

Yep. They were notified about Kirkwood yesterday afternoon. They battled. It came down to distance.

  38. gobows February 6, 2013 6:21 am

    Nope

  39. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 6:22 am

Saint Juste is solid, I’m told.

  40. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 6:24 am

Just spoke with Saint Juste. He said he signed at 7 a.m. Eastern time. That’s 2 a.m. Hawaii time. That guy is fast.

The vid’ of him faxing in his commitment wasn’t sped up, was it?

Don’t see ANY status of Leon Sandcastle! What’s going on? He’s NOWHERE where a camera or reporter can see him signing!!! THIS is concerning!

  44. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 6:30 am

They’ll be signing three new ones. But not today.

  61. Chicken Grease February 6, 2013 7:00 am

    A Grease seconds # 61’s motion.

UCLA?!?! Gotta wear that weird Gatsby-ish light blue and gold. Be under the stigm of supposed-to-be-a-top-25-team but they aren’t. UCLA? C’mon, choose Warriors, recruits!

  62. Derek February 6, 2013 7:00 am

Washington, Moala, Wily, Falemalu, Hill. I guess Stacey Howard was dropped. Ronald Fields out? Is Anthony Pierce in school and participating in conditioning drills?

  67. Haleakala February 6, 2013 7:17 am

Al is a wealth knowledge. Thanks Al.

  68. PONO February 6, 2013 7:22 am

So far no surprises, just one disappointment in Kirkwood making a last minute switch. However, I’m really glad that KT and AZ signed on the dotted line.

  69. MattyBoy February 6, 2013 7:22 am

    Washington?? Hill?? Where they at??

  70. laulau head February 6, 2013 7:22 am

Agreed…al is da man…along with jeezy and kapakahi, these guys know their s**t!!

  71. AllG February 6, 2013 7:23 am

ST why is the list of signees so short? Did we loose anyone besides Kirkwood? Did we win any battles and land a surprise signee or two?

  72. A-House February 6, 2013 7:23 am

To all the athletes and parents who chose Hawaii, thank you for your commitment to represent our State, the University of Hawaii, your team mates and fellow students!

From start to finish, we will cheer and support your efforts cause you now have many “aunties and uncles” who are now part of your family!

    Make us proud!!!!!!!!

  73. Wes'side Warrior February 6, 2013 7:24 am

    Howzit, Gang!

Dang, this computer… been acting up for the past 2+ weeks. Thought I had it up and running about a week ago, but nooooooo…. We’ll see how it goes for now.

Anywayz… A BEEEEG Welcome and Aloha to all our new Warriors! Although I haven’t been following the who, what, where, etc. of this pre-NLI season, I’m always grateful of the many young men and women who choose to represent us, our school, and our state.

    Oh yeah… one more thing…

Our dang car died on us again this morning. Got some grinding noises coming from the rear end. Not happy. Wish we could get a (newer) replacement for this ride. It’s served us well, but cost us a fortune in keeping it running too. Three-and-a-half more months of this school year, then we’re packing and on our way back home. Can’t wait!

  74. Haleakala February 6, 2013 7:26 am

A-House: I ditto the message. Yes!

  75. WAR MACHINE February 6, 2013 7:30 am

So any word on who the remaining scholarships are going to go to or who they are taking a look at? Damn, Louisiana Lafayette took all the Florida prospects in Simeon and McCollum. How about that Xavier Woods guy, I heard ULL released him of his commitment? Let’s go get em if he didn’t sign elsewhere. An eye for an eye right?

  76. SOUTHCENTRAL February 6, 2013 7:33 am

    Tigi?

  77. HawaiiMongoose February 6, 2013 7:33 am

Derek, re #63, are you saying those five are confirmed or unconfirmed? I haven’t seen anything official yet on Hill, Manoa, Moala, Washington or Wily (although I guess we’re assuming Wily is waiting for Kahuku’s ceremony).

  78. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 7:40 am

My guess is we are signing a corner back. I hope we don’t settle though. Need to wait till right fit comes.

But with Vaughn Jr, Mccollum, and Morris signing with other schools, its apparent we only got 1 corner on our list. Barry Higdon

  79. Labowfan February 6, 2013 7:41 am

If Barker qualifies, he might be the jewel of this class. With that being said, I think this class is no better than Mack’s or JJ’s.

  80. WAR MACHINE February 6, 2013 7:42 am

Okay so 17 signed…how much scholarships do we have left again?

  81. Derek February 6, 2013 7:45 am

    Terrance Polk is in?

  82. A-joe February 6, 2013 7:48 am

  84. Derek February 6, 2013 7:51 am

    Polk is in da house.

  85. haka February 6, 2013 7:53 am

    Nice pic of da future!

    Estes in da hale!

  86. PONO February 6, 2013 7:54 am

Glad to see all the local boys signing. I don’t see Ewaliko yet on the updates.

  87. redzone February 6, 2013 7:55 am

    73. +1

  88. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 7:55 am

McCollum’s mom wanted him to go to Louisiana.

    UH dropped Simeon Thomas.

  89. AllG February 6, 2013 7:58 am

Did Pita and Keti decommit? Haven’t heard anything about them since their commitments were announced. UH athletics said we went 4 for 4 from Utah, so I’m guess these guys are out or it would be 6 for 6. Or atleast 4 for 6.

  90. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 8:00 am

    90. I assume we didn’t want to over sign Missions guys as we can recruit them again in 2 years anyway… Probably still recruiting Pita hard

  91. Derek February 6, 2013 8:00 am

20 on the list now. Add Tigi Hill, David Moala, and Darzil Washington that makes 23. Need another CB, defensive lineman. Two Guys out there from the Big Island, Shaun Kagawa and David Fangupo. Who knows?

Colton, long snapper, I assume he’s a walk on.

  92. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 8:01 am

I hope we can sway David Fangupo from BYU. Even if it’s a grey shirt or preferred walk on.

  93. HawaiiMongoose February 6, 2013 8:07 am

I figured it was a distance thing with McCollum. Mom’s gotta agree.

  94. AllG February 6, 2013 8:08 am

    Any word on Moala?

  95. jiminy cricket February 6, 2013 8:09 am

#31. I see Ole Miss as the subject of a major NCAA recruiting investigation in 3-4 years.

  96. AllG February 6, 2013 8:10 am

Hopefully we can sway Etuale back our way!

  97. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 8:11 am

    Washington, Ewaliko both signed.

Manoa and Moala are expected to sign today.

Hill is signing today … with somebody. UH still in the picture, but four other schools are making a push, including Auburn.

    Fangupo just committed.

  98. WAR MACHINE February 6, 2013 8:13 am

    22 signed!!!

  99. WAR MACHINE February 6, 2013 8:13 am

    eh…why not, 100!

  100. al February 6, 2013 8:13 am

    mccollum…then why take the trip?

people are appalled by the ethical conduct of coaches and alumni during the process of recruiting, but, how about that of recruits and their parents who literally try to take schools for a ride?

  101. haka February 6, 2013 8:14 am

Good news. C’mon Tigi…you know you are a Warrior!

  102. WAR MACHINE February 6, 2013 8:15 am

    @ al: RIGHT?! plus 1

  103. al February 6, 2013 8:16 am

  104. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 6, 2013 8:17 am

My heartiest congratulations to all the recruits who signed their LOI today.

May the odds forever be in your favor.

    Yookoso Warriors!

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 6, 2013 8:18 am

    #101,

    Preach it baby! Amen!

  106. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 8:18 am

Pita will be going on a mission and not signing any letter today.

  107. al February 6, 2013 8:19 am

david manoa and david moala side by side on the dline will be the cause for disruption and confusion for announcers in the future.

  108. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 8:19 am

Fangupo’s highlight video is mostly of his long runs as a running back. Granted, the competition will be different, but it is impressive watching him toss aside would-be tacklers.

  109. PONO February 6, 2013 8:20 am

It would suck if Tigi was the last minute switch. I counted my chickens before they hatched.

  110. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 8:21 am

Initial plan was to grayshirt Ewaliko.

Apparently, the thinking is changing and he might be brought in for the fall.

  111. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 8:21 am

    Re: Ewaliko.

UH might have found its Russell Wilson.

  112. haka February 6, 2013 8:22 am

For a top BCS team, getting tripped by a recruit is nothing, but to the Hawaii’s of the world it is very costly. That is why the coaches need to do all their homework and then some before an invitation is extended. It is also why fans, who never know all the details to the courtship, sometimes question the whole recruiting selection process. If they did know, there probably wouldn’t be any question.

  113. gobows February 6, 2013 8:22 am

    #96

are you talking about Ole Miss landing Robert Nkemdiche and 4 other 5* players?

weren’t they in the Cam Newton sweepstakes a few years ago?

SEC motto: if you ain’t cheating, then you ain’t trying…

  114. Warrior Dave February 6, 2013 8:27 am

#98 ST said Hill is signing today … with somebody. UH still in the picture, but four other schools are making a push, including Auburn.

I just hate it when a recruit commits then backs off at the 11th hour. Shows me a lack of character. Better to just not verbally commit and announce on signing day.

  115. redzone February 6, 2013 8:27 am

  118. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 8:30 am

    Hell Yeah on Fangupo!

  119. kakaako kid February 6, 2013 8:30 am

Good idea to sign Ewaliko before track season.

Too bad no McCollum, but one reason to take a recruiting trip is to give the player an idea of the travel involved. I guess it was farther than it looked on the map. Works the same way for island athletes looking at the mainland.

Can’t win them all, but we will try when we watch them at Sam Boyd Stadium. Parlay!

  120. gobows February 6, 2013 8:31 am

    #108

boobie curran is always mixing up the players…and john veneri doesn’t have the sense to correct him.

how many of you are over 50 years old, sit in the upper levels and do not use binoculars at Aloha? i can see the press box from my seat and BC doesn’t use binoculars. so half the time he’s guessing the wrong number. isn’t that idiotic…it’s time 1420am passes the UH football torch to the Rev. Felipe Ojastro.

  121. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 8:37 am

So funny how everyone thought I was dumb last week when I said Ewaliko could play QB and open up a spread attack. Now it seems like genius idea that UH might implement it.

Jeremiah Taleni said taking the official visit to Pittsburgh with his mom sealed his decision and most important got the mom’s blessings. They loved the school. Distance wasn’t a factor, and that was their 1st time to the mainland.

  124. al February 6, 2013 8:40 am

you know…i know he’s being modest, but, i believe it to be jeezy33 who alerted the warrior staff about fangupo.

  125. al February 6, 2013 8:42 am

so two more to go…db and a oline or dline dude, methinketh.

  126. G Money February 6, 2013 8:43 am

Fangupo is Fantastic… but watch #2 in the video! mighty mouse lays a lickin’ on 2 defenders on the same run!

    Is it game time yet?

Exciting day with more to come. Train hard, train smart, stay out of trouble.

    GO WARRIORS!

  128. Derek February 6, 2013 8:45 am

Is it Aaron or is it Keelan Ewaliko? I hope Ewaliko can be the answer, but I worry about this passing and his accuracy. I don’t question his running ability. Until then, he’s a long way from being a Russell Wilson look a like. Maybe Ewaliko can get a passing tutor to help him. Just a suggestion. Gotta be accurate and move the chains. Per June Jones, the most important thing to be a great QB is ACCURACY. Great is 65% or better completion. Good is 60%. Above average, 55%, average 50%, less than 50% look for another position.

  129. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 8:46 am

I spoke with a scout from the Pittsburgh Steelers last year. He said he grew up in Pittsburgh. He had never been to a steel mill.

Pittsburgh’s a wonderful city with great cultural arts and a very good medical school.

  132. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 8:47 am

It’s Keelan. The blog host woke up at 4:45 two days in a row and forgot how to spell.

  133. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 8:49 am

I wanted to meet with Chow yesterday. He said to come by at 5:30 a.m. I said I’ll be there at 5:29.

I get up, leave the house at 4:55 and, as I’m about to get on the Pali, I see smoke emitting from my car. I make a U-turn (illegal, I suppose), go back home, wake up the wife and ask to use her car. Made it at 5:35. Chow said: Hah, I knew you couldn’t make it on time.

  134. Stretch February 6, 2013 8:50 am

I feel so sorry for ST having to wake up at 445am…..

  135. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 8:51 am

I thought I was early when I got to today’s ceremony at 6. Then I was told it would begin at 6:20. Of course, after every athlete was introduced and Miano and Peter Kim decided to do a rendition of War and Peace, the signings didn’t occur until after 7.

  136. Bryson February 6, 2013 8:52 am

Did you have to do bear crawls and rolls for being late ST?…. Lol

  137. J-FORCE February 6, 2013 8:55 am

    Fangupo, new yogurt franchise.

  148. Derek February 6, 2013 9:12 am

I assume Matt Koloamatangi is either an OG or OT. Whatever. Surprise, surprise NY Giants release LB Michael Boley. He’s only 30. Maybe they’re trying to get younger. Bobby C must be worried. Ravens have a lot of free agents and probably can’t keep most of them because of Flacco’s impending big bucks. Odds are against the Ravens repeating. 49ers have 14 draft picks in the upcoming draft. They can trade up or down or even trade with existing players. I wouldn’t be surprised a straight swap between Alex Smith and Darelle Revis. Jets need a QB, 49ers need a shutdown CB. Okay, back to Warrior football!!

know a student athlete needing help getting into college?

    recruiting tips for student athletes:

#1 – Put together your Student-Athlete Resume [SEE EXAMPLE]

#2 – The #1 rule to remember is that coaches MUST see you play in order to be interested in recruiting you, either in person or on film. If you don’t have any offers and nobody has come out to see you play, your main goal is to get coaches to evaluate your film. [MORE]

#3 – When researching and contacting schools, you MUST figure out which assistant coach is in charge of recruiting your town, position, grade, etc. Each coaching staff splits recruiting responsibilities, so your priority is to find out which coach would be your ‘recruiting coach.’ [MORE]

#4 – Talk to your prep coaches and see if they would be able to call some schools for you. What level do they think you would be able to play at? Do they know any college coaches who are at that level who may be able to give you a quick evaluation? Would your coaches be willing to make some cold calls for you? [MORE]

#5 – Start contacting the local schools, schools within your state

    Search NCAA schools by state

    Search NAIA by state

#6 – If possible, try to evaluate which school lacks depth at your position. Recruiting decisions are based on timing, it will be difficult to get your foot in the door at a school that is stacked at your position. Coaches are much more likely to evaluate your film if they are in need of a player just like you.

#7 – Would you consider starting at a Junior College and transferring to a Division I or II school in a year or two? Many Division I and II programs put effort into scouting Junior College programs… [MORE]

#8 – If you have no scholarship offers would you be interested in joining the team as a walk-on and work to secure non-athletic scholarships or student loans? [MORE]

#9 – Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center if you haven’t already. It is a MANDATORY step, and a sign of maturity to coaches that you’ve already begun the process. [MORE]

#10 – Get a copy of your unofficial transcript ready as well as your SAT/ACT scores. Once coaches are interested in you, the next step will be to evaluate if you can qualify academically.

    Faalologo??? Still coming?

  169. Derek February 6, 2013 9:49 am

Al, you have a good point there, a very good point. Playing time, or the lack of. I feel sorry for Jeremy Tabuyo. Texas A&M signed about 5 or 6 receivers and Tabuyo is the lowest rated, going against a lot of 4 and 5 star recruits. Do we really think he’s going to get a lot of PT over there. Realistically, probably no. But, he made the decision so he has to live with it. If can all wish him good luck, but more likely he will be out of sight, out of mind.

  170. jimmy the lock February 6, 2013 9:56 am

Who’s to say that Tigi or Tabuyo won’t outshine higher rated players? Isn’t that the same we are saying about Hawaii’s lower recruits? Many have said it’s not about the ratings. Sheesh.

  171. Derek February 6, 2013 9:58 am

Tigi Hill, home is where the heart is and you will be proud to call himself as a “Warrior”. The State will embrace you will be a household name, almost!!!!

  172. Kapahulu February 6, 2013 9:59 am

This appears to be the approximate breakdown of signees by position:

(not sure what position Koloamatangi plays- Lineman?)

    Quarterback = 2

    Running Back = 2

    Defensive Back = 2

    Tight End = 1

    Offensive Line = 3

    Defensive Line = 3

    Wide Receiver = 4

    Linebackers = 6

    Total = 23

2 Openings left for probably 1 Defensive Back and 1 Offensive Lineman.

Looks like a great recuiting class.

Add on the early signees and walk-ons and things are looking up.

Congratulations to Norm Chow and Staff for their hard work in Recuiting.

  173. NotNasti February 6, 2013 10:01 am

Don’t underestimate Tabuyo. He ran a 4.43 at the PIAA combine, and a 4.46 at the Nike SPARQ combine. He may surprise a few people. I’m for one, rooting for his success.

  174. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 10:03 am

    Pita has signed with BYU.

  175. PONO February 6, 2013 10:05 am

Tigi needs to realize that he’s a JC transfer so he needs to play immediately. Auburn is using him as a backup plan as guys fell through. If they thought he could contribute immediately he would have been offered a long time ago. Now they are just filling positions of need so they have depth. Hawaii offers instant playing time which is essential when you only have two years of eligibility left. Plus you’re in Hawaii with your family and friends.

  176. RS February 6, 2013 10:10 am

I was really hoping we’d get Pita. Hopefully he has a change of heart while on his mission

  177. Derek February 6, 2013 10:14 am

Jimmy, don’t get excited. We are not saying they are not good players or they won’t perform well. It is all about the opportunity to play and the competition they are in. Two extremes, Marcus Mariota redshirted, competed, and won the starting job for the Ducks, and he’s now a Heisman candidate this coming year. That’s terrific. Then, there’s his former teammate at St. Louis Juda Parker, State defensive player of the year,. He went to Colorado and we have not heard about him since he left the islands. One is on a great team, and the other is on a terrible team. In A&M’s case, they are a terrific team with a Heisman QB. Tabuyo will compete in practice like everybody else. Let’s see how he does.

The plus is he’s on a good team and the only thing he can do is do the best he can. We all know the star ratings are not an absolute and a lot of players fly under the radar, like St. Juste. However, the scouting services are very good and for the most part they are accurate in their evaluation of talent.

  178. HawaiiMongoose February 6, 2013 10:16 am

ST said Pita will be going on a mission and not signing any letter today, now we hear Pita signed with BYU. If correct then it sounds like the young man has some difficulty telling the truth.

  179. Independent Thinker February 6, 2013 10:18 am

If Chow were the skipper of a tuna boat, I would say he pulled in quite a haul. There are same primo pelagics in this year’s class. Good job, skipper!

Some of the pelagics in this haul are destined for the markets in Japan.

    Go Warriors!!!

Great point Jimmy the lock! It certainly works both ways.

    BIK

  184. Pauoa Boy February 6, 2013 10:23 am

    jeezy33,

Howzit my bruddah, Fangupo I heard was like 6’2″ 340lbs. I think he would make one real mean FB once he gets to UH and leans up a bit and put more muscle on his body. His running style reminds me more of West Keli’ikipi, the way he runs over guys. Granted competition wasn’t all that but you can tell for a big guy he can move and has power. Probably would most likely be a lineman but I would love to see him in the backfield pancaking somebody or bulldozing his way into the end zone. I love big bruising type players and he certainly brings the pain.

  185. jimmy the lock February 6, 2013 10:28 am

    @Derek

    Not getting excited, just saying.

  186. Haleakala February 6, 2013 10:33 am

I wonder if David Fangupo was kept under the radar by UH. Seems like when we got commitments in the past, other schools would hear about it and try to swoop in.

  187. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 10:34 am

    179. He is not signing a letter of intent. I think it’s more a letter of agreement or something like that.

  188. AllG February 6, 2013 10:36 am

Losing Pita, Kirkwood, Etuale, and possibly Tigi would make this a good, not great class. Those guys all had gamebreaker potential. Too bad! Hopefully we can find some late diamonds in the rough like we did last year with the two Florida DBs.

  189. al February 6, 2013 10:38 am

179…why do you blame this young 18 year old when it is the adults who are reporting this information that is however misconstrued.

  190. al February 6, 2013 10:40 am

189…we’ve just landed fangupo because of the vacancies. i agree with jeezy33 and kifi that he could turn out to be the gem of the class. his athleticism and size reminds me of sopoaga in many ways.

  191. Darren February 6, 2013 10:40 am

    188. Must be a letter of agreement stating that BYU no longer has to spend any time, effort, and resources to poach Pita during his mission.

  192. NotNasti February 6, 2013 10:42 am

When Fangupo played against Farrington, he had 7 carries for 24 yards, not exactly stellar against big boy competition. His YouTube highlights are stunning, though. He might be the fastest 340lb fb’er.

    40 yard dash time: 5 sec., 5.2 w/one guy hanging on him, 5.5 w/two guys, 5.9 w/4 guys, etc.

  193. al February 6, 2013 10:42 am

bigwave…heard his name being bandied about, too.

  194. PurpleMaple February 6, 2013 10:43 am

Without Tigi Hill, David Moala, Dejon Allen and Ron Fields, the qualty of this class has slipped a lot. This is on top of losing Quenton Brown and Charles Tua’au. Not signing David Manoa and Pita Taumoepenu not significant. Just my thinking.

  195. Darren February 6, 2013 10:44 am

    191. al, the last time I recall landing someone like this was when we signed Moses Samia. Some DT that we were on ended up going to UDub (don’t recall name of course). It’s ended up being a pretty good deal for us…

  196. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 10:45 am

    193. I think they key with him is losing 20 pounds while getting stronger and playing DT. Not many 340 pounders have quick feet and balance like he does. Now if he can become even faster and stronger at 320, you might have a big space eater at NT who can have a quick 1st step. Risk you take sometimes.

  197. jimmy the lock February 6, 2013 10:46 am

    The Warriors lost Dejon?

  198. Bugaz February 6, 2013 10:46 am

So glad KT stayed true to his committment!!! Now I can uncross all my fingers, toes, and eyes.

  199. Hank February 6, 2013 10:46 am

Tulimasealii, Wa’a, Wiley, Sale, Barker and Griffin are huge wins for UH.

Tigi would also be a big one. Nonetheless, follow your heart Mr. Hill because that is where you’ll be most successful.

  200. NotNasti February 6, 2013 10:47 am

Agreed. His NFL future is at NT, unless he can be a 270 lb 4.7 sec./40 guy.

  201. sportsbow February 6, 2013 10:49 am

    179.

According to this twitter, Pita did sign with BYU.

    LINK: https://twitter.com/BrandonCGurney/status/299256766137507840

  202. DoubleB February 6, 2013 10:49 am

@185 would love to see Fangupo at FB lead blocker, and catching balls in the flat in open space on the edge… What thoughts will be going through the CBs mind when it’s one on one staring down Fangupo as he steams at him?

  203. al February 6, 2013 10:50 am

    no, we have dejon allen.

i suspect manoa and moala are subject to securing the proper signatures.

i wouldn’t totally give up on pita. the mission gives him time to work on his SAT/ACT’s. so he could be available.

  204. Labowfan February 6, 2013 10:54 am

Not impressed with this class. Saint Juste and Barker are jewels but the rest are alright. You need more than 2 recruits to be competitive with a pro style offense and compete in the MWC.

    I say at least 5 is non-qualifiers.

  205. jimmy the lock February 6, 2013 10:55 am

    @al

Hope your suspicions are correct. Maybe you could send some bird drones to spy.

  206. Hawfan February 6, 2013 10:57 am

This is still a great class ..tigi is my greatest concern, but with some of the wrs and Ken and zwalhen ….this class outshines anyone I have seen in th

    e past many years

  207. AllG February 6, 2013 10:58 am

    191. He is a good pick up, but we lost out on a lot of talented commitments. DT is our thinnest position so any DT with size we can get I welcome. But he is far from a Sopoaga type talent. He is more like Regan Mauia.

  208. Hawfan February 6, 2013 10:59 am

And the OL waa a few other DTs that look good and now this bruiser of a RB that will garentee two yards evry time he runs plus he could be a run stopper

  209. J-FORCE February 6, 2013 10:59 am

  210. AllG February 6, 2013 11:02 am

This had potential to outshine all recent classes, but I do think JJ had a couple better classes. Namely the D Bess class, but time will tell. I love the size, one thing missing in most of JJ’s classes.

  231. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 6, 2013 11:24 am

I still don’t see a source saying Kirkwood’s LOI is in UHAD office. Can anyone provide one?

  232. NotNasti February 6, 2013 11:24 am

    220. Jeezy, are you sure about Kirkwood? NJ Star Ledger reporting that Kirkwood will go to Rutgers.

“In a signing day switch, Neptune wide receiver Keith Kirkwood announced he would attend Rutgers on Wednesday and turned down a scholarship to the University of Hawaii.

Kirkwood was not one of the 22 players who submitted a national letter of intent to play at Rutgers, today.

The No. 49 prospect on The Ledger 50, who had previously made a verbal commitment to Hawaii, changed his mind after an official visit to Rutgers this past weekend. He said he plans to redshirt next fall.

“I just wanted Rutgers from day one,” Kirkwood said. “As soon as they offered, it opened my heart back up and I was so glad that they came back into the process.””

  246. gobows February 6, 2013 11:41 am

    huh?

headline from the Star Ledger in New Jersey:

Keith Kirkwood of Neptune announces he will attend Rutgers on National Signing Day

Editor’s note: An earlier version stated Kirkwood signed a national letter of intent. Kirkwood is not among the 22 players to sign a LOI with Rutgers today.

    http://www.nj.com/hssports/blog/football/index.ssf/2013/02/keith_kirkwood_of_neptune_signs_with_hawaii_on_national_signing_day.html

that article says KK signed with Rutgers, but the editors note was later added.

If the UH has his paperwork, then he didn’t sign with Rutgers.

  249. Just wondering February 6, 2013 11:43 am

  250. Darren February 6, 2013 11:44 am

    Scott Stump‏@Scott_Stump

Talking to Ciccotelli, it sounds like Kirkwood was torn between staying home for his parents and going to Hawaii, resulting in the flip-flop

A young man’s gotta do what a young man’s gotta do…just glad that his parents agreed. Need to remember that we’re dealing with 17/18 year olds trying to figure out where they’ll be spending the 4-5 years of their life.

  251. kev-1 February 6, 2013 11:48 am

Question: How binding is an LOI? Can a recruit change his mind after that? I’m not sure how it works, but it seems that with the fluidity of college recruiting, there needs to be a point when schools know for sure who they have coming in.

  252. lowtone123 February 6, 2013 11:49 am

    According to hawaiiathletics.com:

11:39 am HT: UH processes paperwork for defensive lineman Ualesi Sale of ‘Aiea High School and wide receiver Keith Kirkwood of Neptune (NJ) High.

  253. Kevin February 6, 2013 11:51 am

Considering how things are today, the only safe bet to know is when the prospect registers and shows up for class on Day 1.

  254. redzone February 6, 2013 11:54 am

Wonder if Rutgers offered him a scholie agreement? If not I would take the scholie. No guarantee when you walk on.

  255. mauiboy159 February 6, 2013 11:54 am

Heard that Ewaliko is not going to grey shirt. This was reported on The Fred Guzman Show.

  256. lowtone123 February 6, 2013 11:59 am

Now that Kirkwood is on board, hoping for Tigi Hill. A Warrior jersey is waiting for you.

  257. whitey February 6, 2013 12:05 pm

Coach Chow and his staff, well done and hope this gives your program a huge boost for the upcoming season. Again, congratulations.

  258. NotNasti February 6, 2013 12:18 pm

Good news on Kirkwood. I did not know Rutgers did not offer him a scholie. IF they did, he prolly would have signed with them. Good for us.

  259. masatoshi-san February 6, 2013 12:19 pm

hey guys! how do the new warriors look?

  260. wait a minute February 6, 2013 12:20 pm

kev-1, a LOI cannot stop a student from going to whatever school they want to. Of course if they sign and don’t go they may not be able to play or get a scholarship at another school.

    Rutgers football 2013 recruiting class

Troubled times at Penn St. can’t keep N.J. duo out of Happy Valley

Rutgers shows signs of expanded recruiting footprint with 22 commits

All Stories | All Photos | All Videos

Editor’s note: 5:20 p.m. Keith Kirkwood has signed a letter of intent to play football at the University of Hawaii. Please check back for our story.

In a signing day switch, Neptune wide receiver Keith Kirkwood announced he would attend Rutgers on Wednesday and turned down a scholarship to the University of Hawaii.

“As soon as they offered, it opened my heart back up and I was so glad that they came back into the process.”

Kirkwood, who also had multiple Division 1 basketball offers, has gained attention with his raw athleticism. In his debut football season, the 6-foot-4 receiver caught 30 passes for 669 yards and seven touchdowns and helped lead Neptune to a Central Jersey, Group 3 final. He earned Second Team All-Monmouth County honors.

With Kirkwood’s size and basketball background, he is just scratching the surface of his football potential, Neptune coach Mark Ciccotelli said.

“There are so many guys like him in the NFL,” Neptune coach Mark Ciccotelli said. “There’s Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham, the college basketball guys. There’s a lot of carry over from that sport to this sport. It’s a matter of dealing with the physicality of it everyday.”

Kirkwood, who measures 6-4 and 210 pounds, will use his redshirt season to add some bulk to his frame and hone his football skills, Ciccotelli said.

Kirkwood, who had verbally committed to Hawaii in December, said that staying home is a family decision from all angles.

On top of being less than an hour away from his immediate family and native Neptune, Kirkwood feels the support from his second “family.”

“I’m most excited for the family at Rutgers,” Kirkwood said. “It’s the foundation. They all come together as one, no matter what. They just have that partnership and the love for each other that helps the family build.”

Editor’s note: An earlier version stated Kirkwood signed a national letter of intent. Kirkwood is not among the 22 players to sign a LOI with Rutgers today.

  262. jeffdman2000 February 6, 2013 12:23 pm

    oops late…got excited

  263. redzone February 6, 2013 12:24 pm

I think they have to attend the school they want to go to on their own dime for a year and lose one year play time. LOI one year contract.

  264. kev-1 February 6, 2013 12:28 pm

thanks for the answers to the LOI question gang!

  265. Chicken Grease February 6, 2013 12:33 pm

  266. Chicken Grease February 6, 2013 12:41 pm

UH Warriors should be the first to have a FEMALE sign football commitment on signing day . . . coaches, make it happen. Want to see (how’s THIS for extremes; but, you have the feeling it’s going to be either/or) a linebacker or a kicker [!]

Great pic of Sale, Waa, and Tulimasealii . . . they are ready for this!!!!!!

  267. chawan_cut February 6, 2013 12:42 pm

did we not get anyone we thought we were going to get?

Has anyone heard of the guys on this list?

I know I havn’t But some good size hope we get some of them.

Right on !!!! 😀 Welcome Tigi, thanks for being a Warrior!

  275. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 12:49 pm

    Hill is faxing it now.

  276. NotNasti February 6, 2013 12:49 pm

Great news on Tigi! Forgot about the M&M DT’s. Our lack of depth at DT was severely exposed last year.

  277. rockyk February 6, 2013 12:50 pm

Tulimasealii & Tigi Hill would have been the two greatest losses to me…. wasn’t looking good with T.Hill for a moment BUT according to ST we got him!!!!!!

  278. HawaiiMongoose February 6, 2013 12:52 pm

Al, re #190, that’s why I used the qualifiers “if correct” and “sounds like”. I acknowledge we don’t know the whole story. Maybe he wanted to wait until after returning from his mission to decide and UH was willing to accommodate him, but BYU gave him an ultimatum and so he changed course.

  279. redzone February 6, 2013 12:52 pm

    Tigi alright!!!!

  280. lowtone123 February 6, 2013 12:52 pm

TIGI TIGI TIGI! You made the right choice my bruddah. Instant playing time.

  283. Hilo-Warrior February 6, 2013 12:54 pm

I have been excited about this class as the off season has gone along. Its a loss for the few who decided to go other ways.

According to ESPN, this years class consists of 2 4* and 7 3* recruits. Way to Go Coach!

  284. haka February 6, 2013 12:54 pm

    Tigi! Tigi! Tigi! WARRIOR!

  285. rockyk February 6, 2013 12:55 pm

Tigi Hill could easily be a 4 star recruit! Welcome Home Tigi!

  286. maui warrior February 6, 2013 12:55 pm

so how many of the committed are on the “borderline” for qualifying?

  287. gobows February 6, 2013 12:56 pm

    ST re: #112

are you hinting that Norm Chow may be modifying the offense to better utilize the players (Ewaliko) skills?

  288. NotNasti February 6, 2013 12:57 pm

Tigi @ strong safety and Marrell Jackson @ free safety.

  289. Chicken Grease February 6, 2013 12:57 pm

    T[I]GI WARRIOR!!!!!!!!

    http://www.lostlettermen.com/cheerleader-anna-watson/?utm_source=crowdignite.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=crowdignite.com

it was rumored that former wahine Brandi Pelier could bench 145 pounds. but she’s way bigger than that cheerleader. but the strongest wahine ever is the world record holder and Kamehameha alum Hoku Nohara.

  295. Hilo-Warrior February 6, 2013 1:07 pm

    290 gobows

Coach wouldn’t be modifying anything. They already tried to run the pistol offense. And I know for a fact that they ran the dive keeper that the niners and seahawks and redskins use. Its just I don’t feel it could have been run with joey and schroeder in the back field.

I think that there are more options to use that play more with the players coming in.

  296. Whats up February 6, 2013 1:07 pm

Thank you Tigi for committing to the Warriors!!! Whew, Tigi is going to be big time in Kaumeyer’s type of attacking defense. This is a HUGE get, no doubt! Keith Kirkwood committing to the Warriors is also a big get. Rutgers and the other east coast schools are going to kick themselves for not offering Kirkwood a full scholie in a few years from now. Chow and the coaches are going to develop Kirkwood and Higdon into Stars and those East coast schools just missed the boat.

  297. jiminy cricket February 6, 2013 1:08 pm

#162. This is not the best ever on paper. The best ever recruiting class on paper was JJ’s 2nd year. He signed all top 10 local recruits! You can look it up. It never happened before and has never happened again. Timmy Chang was the top of the list and he was heavily recruited.

  298. jimmy the lock February 6, 2013 1:09 pm

Let’s not forget others who will play for the home team, sorry if I missed anyone:

    Daisy “Kama” Pascua

    Madison Reed

    Tierra “TJ” Reyno

    Storm Kenui

    Welcome!

I to am smiling about that safety combo. And they are a hitting combo. Hope to see those old Leonard Peter hits from them.

  301. masatoshi-san February 6, 2013 1:13 pm

who else are we waiting for? are there any uh commits that have yet to sign?

  303. Bowwar February 6, 2013 1:14 pm

It will be interesting to see who they fill the remaining two-three scholarships with…According to ST, that won’t happen till tomorrow or Friday.

  314. oldie February 6, 2013 1:30 pm

Congrats to Coach Chow and his assistants on a job well done. The tireless hours that they all put in looks like it really paid off.

Obviously, the recruits are going to have to prove themselves on the field. I think Coach will give them that opportunity if they train hard in the off season and show up ready to play when training camp starts.

  315. AllG February 6, 2013 1:32 pm

    ST, any word on Moala?

  316. Hawfan February 6, 2013 1:39 pm

  317. Stu Padasso February 6, 2013 1:43 pm

Anyone know if Shaun Kagawa signed an LOI with anyone yet?

  318. PolyMom February 6, 2013 1:44 pm

  333. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 6, 2013 2:27 pm

So again I ask, is this the BEST recruiting class we have ever gotten?

I’m not talking about results of, how they perform, what happens in 2-3-4 years…Just talking about signing day and the hype over players on signing day.

So, is this THE BEST EVER?

  334. Darren February 6, 2013 2:31 pm

According to some, the BEST EVER would entail signing all of the 2013 Top Ten Hawaii recruits. So no, we’re not there yet.

  335. wafan February 6, 2013 2:32 pm

Welcome to the new Warriors and Rainbows!

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  336. Stephen Tsai February 6, 2013 2:32 pm

  345. Darren February 6, 2013 2:39 pm

For those with two feet set in reality, this looks to be on paper an amazing class. Two ESPN 300 recruits with a good mix of local and mainland players have filled most of our positions of need. Really would have liked to see Moala to help with our DL depth, but understand that all the boys need to take care of business before they can strap it up for the Warriors.

  346. wafan February 6, 2013 2:40 pm

And, super job by the student hosts, too!

  347. koakane February 6, 2013 2:40 pm

  348. Darren February 6, 2013 2:41 pm

Etuale is a Wazoo Cougar…pretty sure that name will fade from the memory pretty quick around here.

  349. Stu Padasso February 6, 2013 2:41 pm

#330 Thanks Big Island Kurt. Do you know when the Hilo Na Koa event is supposed to take place? Since I didn’t hear anything, I thought maybe UH pulled their offer to him…

  350. WarriorNY February 6, 2013 2:43 pm

    Awesome about Manoa…

Wow, on paper, this has to be our top recruiting class in years. I still worry about our D-line though…

Two of the top 300 recruits in the nation! (As ranked by ESPN) Some absolute gems with incredible talent/potential like Kirkwood, Hill, and Barker… I’m a little disappointed that the trio of Florida players decided on Louisiana-Lafayette but I have to appreciate the coaches effort in this recruiting class…

    GREAT JOB COACHES!!!

  351. jimmy the lock February 6, 2013 2:44 pm

Etu-who? Nah, good luck to him.

  352. Gsky February 6, 2013 2:48 pm

Sure bringing in a lot of linebackers…the cream will rise to the top I guess.

  353. Former UH Athlete February 6, 2013 2:54 pm

Nice class by Chow…. Ekuale, and Tua’au was disappointing but that’s how the recruiting game goes.

Still the best class since 2005. The days of keeping 7 or more of the top 10 best local players is gone because Hawaii is heavily recruited area now by many mainland schools.

  354. jimmy the lock February 6, 2013 3:00 pm

You never know, there may come a year where more than 69% of the top 10 will want to play for the home team. Just saying.

  355. Darren February 6, 2013 3:02 pm

Think a realistic goal for local recruiting is to get at least 1 of the top 5, and a total of 4 of the top 10. Since the Star-Advertiser #9 is going to Boise, I’d switch him with Sale at #11 and call it all good.

  356. haka February 6, 2013 3:03 pm

  360. WarriorNY February 6, 2013 3:15 pm

    @362,

    I’m guessing it’ll be Mr. Chicken Grease…

Though, he’s been kinda quiet today…

  361. jiminy cricket February 6, 2013 3:17 pm

Really impressed with how hard the coaches work on recruiting. Just hope they all qualify academically. I remember some of Mac’s recruiting classes were really good but after couple of months, it turned out that 20-25% eventually couldn’t qualify academically.

Today is always one of the most exciting days in college football. Every coach will tell you that his recruiting class is real good. AFter 45 years of watching college football, it’s still exciting but I now temper my excitement with the reality that some will make it and some won’t, for whatever reasons. that’s why good recruiting every year is the lifeblood of a good program. Looks like Chow has gotten off to a good start.

Go Warriors…er Go Bows…er Go Rainbow Warriors…uh, whatever the brand name is.

  362. Whats up February 6, 2013 3:21 pm

You can thank Manti Teo and Marcus Mariota for showing the entire United States that the 50th State has elite talented football players. Now it’s going to extra hard to keep the top local boys home, Chow and his staff has done a great job recruiting locally and on the mainland. I mean lets keep in mind that Chow recruited some studs last year like Marrell Jackson, Jerrol Garcia Williams, Nequan Phillips, Lakalaka, Kiha Sai, Dejon Allen and more off of a McMackin 2011 dismal 6-7 season and now KT, Tigi, Polk, Diocemy, Zwahlen, Sale, Wily, Wa’a, Barker and more off of a dismal 3-9 season. Give Chow and his staff credit none of us thought the not so highly touted Florida boys Nequan and Marrell plus Las Vegas boy Jerrol Garcia Williams plus Colorado boy Ben Clark would be impact players first year! For Chow, Demo, Tuioti, Kaumeyer, Powell and the rest of the staff to get so much talented recruits after a 3-9 season, Is a credit to Chow and his staff hard work! The recruits believe in what Chow is selling in building a program from the bottom up and chasing championships.

  363. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 6, 2013 3:25 pm

To think what a winning season+bowl+USC defeat would have on recruiting.

    Hey I can fantasize!

  364. Chicken Grease February 6, 2013 3:36 pm

You folks who directly contributed to recruiting/signing postings today . . . bravo!!! Great opinion, great work!!!

This is not spam, by the way. (of course, you know the name of a Grease 😉 . )

  365. Haleakala February 6, 2013 3:36 pm

Great job by the coaches in recruiting. Can you imagine how difficult it is to win the hearts and minds of the talented young men and their parents when recruiters from the big name schools are constantly calling and visiting. Coach Chow needs a big broom to shoo them away.

    #365 Whats up,

Hold your horses. We all are excited with the amount of recruits coming in. But nothing is proven just yet. All recruits have to adjust and fit into a system that is at a different level. Results will show in the next year or two.

  369. WarriorMojo February 6, 2013 3:45 pm

Re #365 Oh, please…. I agree with most of your post, but nobody knew about Hawaii football until Saint Manti? Whatever.

One of the best things about twitter is that you can have direct access to a player’s thoughts.

One of the worst things about twitter is that you can have direct access to a player’s thoughts.

Moala recently tweeted a couple of things that made me go “hmmm….”

  375. Shoko February 6, 2013 3:49 pm

Hawaii is ranked fourth in the conference. So far, I agree with everyone else that the 2013 recruiting class makes the future look promising.

  378. Haleakala February 6, 2013 3:55 pm

WarriorNY: That’s pretty amazing to have two of the top ESPN 300.

The only thing that can make recruiting even better next year is have more wins in the 2013 season. I think that the coaches did the best job possible in recruiting this year.

  379. WarriorNY February 6, 2013 3:58 pm

    Haleakala,

I completely agree… I’m so excited with this class… I hope it shows translates to wins…

  380. haka February 6, 2013 3:58 pm

What’s wrong with being excited? Really excited. I don’t get it. It’s not a matter of being right or wrong is it? Why do we need to wait to feel really good about the recruits and where we are heading? I, for one, do not need proof to be filled with excitement and anticipation for the coming season and beyond. I am excited for us to be good and compete at a high level. I am excited for the new recruits to contribute right away. I am excited for the returnees to not only be better, but to dominate. I expect the coaches to be on their a-game. I expect the fans to show up! I am excited for our Warrior program yesterday, today and tomorrow! I, for one, will not wait for proof to eat the pudding! Go Warriors!

  381. Haleakala February 6, 2013 4:02 pm

From twitter, different tweets that I’ve combined. Not normally a soccer fan, but I really enjoyed the televised games last year. Coach Bud seems to have the program moving in the right direction. Definitely gonna take in a game or two this year.

    Hawaii Wahine Soccer ‏@UHWahineSoccer

Also, bringing in a JC transfer in Korinne Estrada! Conference defender of the year from Foothill JC in CA!

One more mainland freshmen! Say hello to Ryan Daniel! Outside back with unbelievable athleticism. Out of Castro Valley, CA

Also received an NLI from the first of a few local kids that fortunately stayed home! Madison Reed a defender out of Mililani!

Another NLI has come in from Mikaela “Monk” Berger! Talented GK from Mission Viejo, CA. #58 in ESPN top 150! Former YNT player!

NLI has been received from Hallie Hernandez from Corona, CA! Member of the U17 Mexican National Team! Aloha Hallie!

  383. Haleakala February 6, 2013 4:05 pm

I saw Kennedy play against Leilehua. It was unbelievable how often he was in the backfield chasing down the quarterback or the runner. He had at least six sacks in the game even though he was double teamed.

  389. graham February 6, 2013 4:13 pm

Does anyone know about jc wr stacey howard

  390. Former UH Athlete February 6, 2013 4:14 pm

Just remember that most if this class won’t have a major impact until the 2015 season. The JC transfers should have an immediate impact on the 2013 season.

Recruiting classes are a glimpse of where the program is headed in the future. From what I see, UH will be heading in the right direction.

Chow did bring in some nice players last year and many got experience most freshmen don’t typically get because many true freshmen redshirt their 1st year.

  391. haka February 6, 2013 4:15 pm

Wahine Soccer is definitely on the rise. Looks like Coach Bud has a great recruiting class also! Go Wahine!

gobows #297, yeah, tha’s what a Grease talkin’ about!!! First female football player should come from college . . . AND from Hawaii!!! We wouldn’t mind if was one big “keep the country, country” loud buc+chie either, yeah? 😀

  415. Former UH Athlete February 6, 2013 4:56 pm

Hawaii is stacked at the RB, LB, and DB going into 2013. So no worries there.

The WR signees bring in a ton up of upgrades. Barker & Kirkland being the highlights, but I think the transfers may be more D1 ready at the start of the year. It appears Chow has a couple of deep threats for 2013.

Like any other OL/DL signees across the nation, the incoming freshmen will likely have to redshirt to get stronger as about 95% of incoming freshmen aren’t physically prepared for the size and speed of D1 linemen. Just having a healthy roster would massively improve the D-line. Not getting Ekuale or Tua’au hurts, but Moala and a platoon of healthy returnees should make things better.

Hopefully Griffin can anchor the left tackle position and protect the QB. Both tackles last year were terrible, so anything should be an upgrade. Sounds like the interior of the line is pretty good. Clarke looks to be a NFL prospect down the road and the guard positions will be highly competitive for who gets to start, and that’s always a positive.

QB will be upgraded with Graham running the show. Woosley appeared to be good in practice and scrimmages last year and will should push Graham hard in camp. Whoever starts will be an upgrade over Schroeder or Higgins. Schroeder did his job… he was like a rental car while you wait for your real car gets worked on in the shop. Unforetunately for UH, the car was wrecked pretty bad.

    500 POSTS?!?!?!?

Will a Grease get to brag about having procured post # 500!?!?

  419. Former UH Athlete February 6, 2013 5:12 pm

Metaphorically speaking, years of bad recruiting was like neglecting a car’s engine warning light for years. If you don’t pay attention to it or use bad parts/labor to fix it, at some point the engine will fail and gets destroyed.

UH is at the point where the defective parts have been identified and removed. The parts needed to fix the engine have been ordered to make the repairs. Now UH must wait for the parts to arrive and be installed. The tough part for UH is that UH does not have the funds to order all the parts in one shipment (2012 recruits), so thats why UH needed to get the rental car to get them around (2012 season), until they can order the rest of the parts to fix the engine (2013 recruits).

Engine should be running at full speed by 2014 and then UH gets to start upgrading the car with high performance parts.

By upgrading a car, I don’t mean Rice Rockets, with the turbo i4, homo spoilers and mouse fart mufflers. By upgrades I mean real cars…. turning a ’70 350ci Chevelle into a LS6 454 Chevelle

Heh, WarriorMojo, that is a true list?

Wonder if there any — especially local recruits — who should’ve been signed but wasn’t, for whatever reason. (grades, bad luck, didn’t fill out papers . . .)

When the girl athletes sign — yes, yes, a Grease has expressed along these lines already — it’s charming. It’s like they’re “playing house,” from when they were younger or something, all over again, bwahahaha. A Grease, for sure, NEVER EVER succumbed to that . . . but, what about the rest of you fellas? Let’s hear ya’ll own “playing house” or “playing doctor” true Hollywood story 😉 .

  439. JustAFan February 6, 2013 7:19 pm

Totally love the break down example, with #422 lol. Judging the past recruiting classes was not the cause of last years losing season. Everything in life comes full circle. So if one particular part doesn’t work properly in an vehicle engine, Then the whole vehicle is useless. This years class may look promising but these athlete still have to earn there stripes and prove that they are worthy. Some of them are not completely eligible just yet. Some of coach Macs recruits will be starters this coming season due to there level of experience on the field. His last class still has three years to play. Some of them are gone and have transfered. The coaches have more experience recruiting then us spectators and fans who may think we know. They also take many chances on recruits they feel may benefit the team. But they are here because they want to be here.

  440. Chicken Grease February 6, 2013 7:20 pm

Possibly part of UH’s contingency plan…..but otherwise will probably go to Arizona Western JC….even though full academic qualifier.

  443. Chicken Grease February 6, 2013 7:37 pm

The choices a Grease don’t get . . . bruddah attending Tex A&M; simply cultish their fan base and cheering. Hope he can get used to it. BMOC will be Manziel for the majority of bruddah’s time there. And Rutgers? Red Knights, or whatever they’re called, had that ONE good season and one GREAT game. Oh, well, his choice at least let a Grease Rutgers still has a football program.

Oh, a Grease could go off.

  444. WarriorMojo February 6, 2013 7:43 pm

Kapakahi, thanks. You guys got me intrigued about him. Don’t know why, but olinemen always get me excited.

Wait, that didn’t exactly come out right.

  445. kapakahi February 6, 2013 7:54 pm

    #418. Former UH Athlete,

Apparently those in the business didn’t think that last season’s starting LT was so terrible…..’cuz gonna be signing up at mid-year for a full ride scholie with the Big-12 Baylor Bears….declining full-ride scholie offers from Pac-12 and ACC programs. No doubt that these full-ride scholie offers wouldn’t have been made IF he indeed was so terrible.

BTW, last season’s starting RT still competing…..so better hopefully not so terrible next season.

Like ST posted, Moala not coming this coming season…..for the same reason UH stopped recruiting Tua’au…..i.e., more school work to finish up to get AA…..as has been previously posted.

Great that Tigi signed…..but supposedly still has school work to finish up too.

  446. Former UH Athlete February 6, 2013 7:56 pm

Not sure if we’re going to make 500…

  447. kapakahi February 6, 2013 7:58 pm

    #447,

    IF offered, would probably commit.

But heard that might have gotten a late-offer from a BCS school over this past weekend.

  448. Hawaii Jordan February 6, 2013 8:05 pm

About Keith Kirkwood, I read a report found here (http://recruiting.scout.com/2/1264433.html) that he is going to walk on at Rutgers. Did he sign with UH or going to walk on to Rutgers instead?

  449. Former UH Athlete February 6, 2013 8:05 pm

#448, unfortunately for UH, and for many schools across the country, one problem with JC transfers is reason why they had to go to JC in the first place.

I didn’t see that Tua’au had schoolwork issues.

Tigi is a nice addition. As i said before… UH is stacked at DB. i really like Merrill Jackson as a freshman last year. He really showed flashes of high level talent, but like most freshmen starters, they’re inconsistent. He’s really going to need to have a strong camp to ward off the newcomers.

I like Hardy-Tuliau also, but I think Jackson has better talent and Tigi is taking one of the starting spots, so JH-T may be the odd man out or convert to nickel.

  450. PowderPuff February 6, 2013 8:09 pm

Just returned from the Nā Koa NLI Signing Day event….terrific energy, especially after today. Wow, Coach talked about how Kirkwood’s decision was made final earlier today. And how some other Pac-12(!) school sent a letter to the Sheraton Waikiki this morning for Kennedy. OMG!

  451. WarriorMojo February 6, 2013 8:16 pm

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Coach Chow and sarkisian have some sort of disagreement or falling out at sc?

If so, then uw’s attempt to poach Kennedy was extra dirty.

  452. J-Dog February 6, 2013 8:17 pm

Excited that we opened up that Kahuku pipeline wide open and it shows. Not to mention there is a bit of Warrior pride on that Kahuku sideline with Richard Torres, Colt, Peters, Esera, etc. I wonder if Coach Chow or Torres has a spot for Funaki?

  453. J-Dog February 6, 2013 8:20 pm

There will be some late surprises to come. Look forward to seeing some gems come spring and early summer make their way to Manoa.

  454. Graham February 6, 2013 8:22 pm

#454- I think it was more with kiffin but I doubt they are that friendly if Washington pulled that scummy move. But KT could have led them on.

  455. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 8:26 pm

Hardy Tuliau natural position to me is Nickel. Think he will finally get moved back.

  456. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 8:27 pm

Interesting that Tuaau signed with Oregon St. Wonder if its easier to get in over there.

  457. al February 6, 2013 8:29 pm

    marrell jackson

  458. al February 6, 2013 8:31 pm

  459. kapakahi February 6, 2013 8:33 pm

    #454,

    You’re correct…..about Chow and Sarkisian…..

  460. Former UH Athlete February 6, 2013 8:33 pm

Getting offered a scholie by BCS schools doesn’t translate into being a good D1 player. There’s a lot more to it than that.

Just keep in mind that the talent level jumps exponentially from prep to D1. The worst MWC team (UNLV) would destroy Kahuku if they played a game. Just about every starter on UNLV was an All-League player at their respective HS leagues.

It’s on the player to push themselves to improvement and the coaching to encourage and guide his efforts. There’s a ton of 4 and 5 stars (in other sports also) that flame out caz they don’t have the work ethic… happens every year.

    On a side note:

Boise State, as great as they have been, only signed two 4-stars, which is the same as UH. ESPN has Zwahlen and Kennedy as 4-stars.

Does that mean Peterson is a bad recruiter? Heck no, Peterson is arguably the best coach in the country (right up there with Saban as far as coaching ability). Clearly, BSU can’t get the athletes Bama can, but Peterson finds the players that buy into BSU way of football. Which, by the way, is not the spread. And Peterson is 2-0 vs Oregon.

  461. al February 6, 2013 8:36 pm

451…once and for all, kirkwood enjoyed his visit he committed to hawaii. his parents wanted him home because of the long distance. rutgers offered a preferred walk on status with a possibility of a scholie next year. at the urging of his family he relented and picked rutgers.

he did not have to sign a binding loi, because there was no scholie.

he probably was so upset with this decision that finally i believe his family let him have his wish to become a warrior. so, the parents signed off the loi which he still kept and after speaking with chow he was allowed to submit his binding loi.

thus, keith kirkwood is a warrior and life is good in new jersey and the university of hawaii football program.

he’ll develope in to an nfl caliber wr in four years.

  462. al February 6, 2013 8:38 pm

  463. al February 6, 2013 8:41 pm

459…back in the day, well waaaay back in the day, oregon state was one of the schools that i applied for and yes the minimum qualifications were much lower than uh. still, my single parent mother could only afford the $116.25 per semester at manoa.

(disclaimer: i never let my mother pay for my tuition.)

    “Scummy”?

Has anyone been paying attention to what NCAA D1 college football has become in the last few years? Conference alignments, student-athletes and department employees facing unknown futures, recruits lied to about playing time, etc…

This is college football and quite honestly, this IS what it has become because the drive to win feeds the drive for money and power.

It is allowed and accepted. This is universal truth. This is accepted. Deep down, just admit it.

Today was a great example of the unnecessary spectacle this has become, maybe not locally with the PIAA event, but signing day on a national level is when mommy and daddy get their egos fed while their sons get to play “make-believe” superstar and play the hat game.

Its accepted and it is encouraged.

For every zombie that drools over the Johnson and Johnson Q-Tip Bowl and every fool that believes a real National Champion is crowned in January.. the monster keeps being fed.

    “IS IT SATURDAY YET???”

Sometimes you will see ESPN or hear an ESPN employee talk about the “student-athlete” and the importance of education. BULLS***!!! They are the very people that helped usher in the cancer that KILLED the “student-athlete” in big time big money college football.

  467. al February 6, 2013 8:44 pm

467…i concur with that assessment. i would make him a te first. not too many of his kind that comes out of the spread offenses run by most hs locally these days. in fact, more and more you see hs football running some sort of spread.

  468. clyde February 6, 2013 8:45 pm

Re: UW trying to poach Tuimasealii. Chow did mention the school at his press conference, while Doris Sullivan was more diplomatic and declined to name the school on a radio interview (she has to work with all these schools, after all). Doris did say that a school was trying to reach KT Tuesday night and called her. She didn’t want to get involved when a DI program tries to poach from another DI, so the Pac12 recruiter said they were going to fax a LOI for KT to the Sheraton Wednesday morning, in time for the signing ceremony. Doris wasn’t about to get involved. As she joked on the radio: the fax is probably still in some Sheraton Waikiki office machine. By the way, she had high praise for KT for sticking to his commitment. She said, soon after KT verballed to UH, there were 14 schools that came after him in the next couple of days.

Not sure if we’re going to make 500…

We will, insightful, analytic Former UH Athlete.

A Grease believes Former UH Athlete wants to keep his screen as “Former UH Athlete.” Heh. Nothing wrong w/that, yes?

You folks will help get a Grease to # 500.

    😀

I sure hope Kagawa goes to UH.

BIK When I was coaching at Keaau we had to figure out how to stop him on the line. He is a very well conditioned machine with good footwork with him playing on both sides he would be a great fit at UH.

  472. NotNasti February 6, 2013 9:00 pm

Let’s play 20 questions w/Former UH Athlete. Then garans we reach 500. Eg., “Are you a former football player?”

  473. whitey February 6, 2013 9:09 pm

Thank you Doris Sullivan. Wonder if the ncaa could issue a violation notice to UW for trying to use a third party for their recruiting of KT. Ms Sullivan did the right thing and the more I think about it, UW did commit a recruiting violation by asking someone other than an approve recruiter to recruit KT. Counselor tm, can UH file a complaint with the ncaa???

  474. jeezy33 February 6, 2013 9:12 pm

    473. Coaches gonna be making a lot of trips to Maui this year. Ewaliko becomes pretty valuable as a recruiter also. Would be nice if Reinhardt joins him as a walk on.

  475. clyde February 6, 2013 9:16 pm

whitey: actually, as you probably know, that’s what doris does through her piaa — act as a go-between for hawaii high school kids and colleges. it’s a non-profit, totally volunteer-staffed. piaa, and doris, have worked wonders for hawaii kids for many years. they’re in compliance with ncaa rules, so no violation likely.

  478. Former UH Athlete February 6, 2013 9:19 pm

You might be able to figure it out if based on my past comments. Not easy task. But yes, I was a student-athlete at UH.

Hint: When I was at UH, one the big sentimental headlines was when Rainbow Stadium was renamed to Les Murakami Stadium.

  479. gobows February 6, 2013 9:22 pm

what about Charles Sataraka, any chance of him walking on at Hawaii

  480. gobows February 6, 2013 9:28 pm

Les Murakami Stadium was renamed in 2002.

  482. Former UH Athlete February 6, 2013 9:33 pm

    Hercules! Hercules! Hercules!

#473… He looks awesome. I’m sure a ton of schools will be drooling. Will be hard to keep him on the islands. Do keep in mind Maui competition isn’t good, so good players look great and great players look unbelievable. That being said, he does look really good. Very quick for a DE.

Will be fascinating to see if Chow can get him next year, won’t be easy. I hope there are some family ties to UH to help persuade him towards the good guys.

  483. al February 6, 2013 9:42 pm

But, we will reach # 500 today.

    Hope it’s someone . . . cool. 😀

  488. SteveM February 6, 2013 10:29 pm

#473, awesome video. Runs like a deer, hits like a truck, reminds me of Niko Noga. He would be a big get for the Warriors

Did you notice how many Utah recruits we got? Ten years ago, Utah wasn’t heavily recruited bc there were not that many D1 football players. The Poly families were settling in back then and now many of their kids are college age. Now, West Coast schools have to stop in Utah bc the explosion of Poly talent has eclipsed Hawaii. Next year they are saying will be the peak of Utah football D1 high school players. there may be 40-60 D1 players and with Chow’s good name in Utah, we may be able to get our share….but we gotta win first.
