Let’s go Warriors!!!!!!
Welcome, Warriors!
As Wednesday morning arrives, I want to thank Doris for all that she has done and continue to do. It is easy to talk or (write on a blog) but she is actively helping our student athletes throughout the year. From combines, to clinics, to SAT prep classes, to establishing a clearinghouse and hosting their videos and information, she does quite a bit all through the year. And of course, for all this work, she gets paid nothing.
This morning we are off to Honolulu for Signing Day and lets see, she organized that too.
Feb 1 should be Doris Sullivan Day for all that she does.
Welcome, to all the new Warriors.
Go WARRIORS !!!
JUST SIGN BABY!
Welcome new warriors!!!!!
We eagerly await all the good news and bring in the Chow era. Go Warriors !!
The fathers of Graham and Pierce are former New York Giants.
Morning, everyone!
Got my Gameday Green on. Actually, got extra green on for this day. Sure feels like a Gameday!
Welcome to all our new Warriors!
My apologies if anyone asked previously, but does anyone know if any Hawaii signings will be streaming live? Mahalo!
Stephen, can you do chronologically and not alphabetize until the end of the day? Thanks!
Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.
Good news is here today! Thanks for becoming Warriors you guys!! thank you thank you.
and then i find we got a genius in da far East.
whew. that was simply awe inspiring, Moocher! awesome!
Welcome to all of the new Warriors! Today will be a busy and exciting day for the Warrior program.
@8,

Happy Wednesday Doris Sullivan. For all that you do for Hawaii. Where is your jetset son now? hope all is well with your family! and in all that you do.
HAWAIIAN HAKA: Hartnell’s Milovane will play tackle for Norm Chow at Hawaii
Milovale, who is of Polynesian decent, didn’t have Hawaii on his radar until new coach Norm Chow showed up on the Hartnell College campus last week, asking the offensive left tackle to come out for a visit.
“How many head coaches fly out and come talk to you personally?” Hartnell football coach Matt Collins said.
Milovale had an entirely different perception of Honolulu after arriving for what can be described as a brief visit to the island.
“It feels like home,” said Milovale, who prepped at Monterey High. “I felt real comfortable with all the Polynesians around me. The players were a big influence in making my decision. It will be an easy adjustment for me.”
Prior to Hawaii coming into the picture, Milovale was weighing offers from Louisiana Tech, which tried to bring him in last summer, Middle Tennessee State, where teammate Nick Nunez ended up, and East Carolina University.

Welcome to all the new Warriors signing their LOIs today.
GO WARRIORS!
Good morning again Tsaikos.
special shout out to
Boom SHAKA LAKALAKA
lead da class, bull!
Mahalo BHF2
I wanted Norwood, but I am glad we got Chow. Coach Chow can and will shape these men and enhance both their classroom experiences and their life experiences.
At some point you have to trust other people and who can you trust more then family. Who better to prepare you for life-your family and people who have been there.
At some point every recruit should think about not only their dreams, but the support system and the circle of people they surround themselves with to open doors and find success for the rest of their life.
Choose wisely and best of luck.
to all doze leaving for new horizons, spreading your wings,
best of luck to you.
Good morning, ฮฒฯฮตฯ808! Good morning, gangees!
Saw Doris on da news at the Sheraton for signing day. MAHALO, Doris, for all you do.

Welcome to all of the new Warriors!
Good luck to all of the student-athletes going to other colleges & universities. Graduate and make your families proud.
Have a great day, gang!
Al
said it best. the very best.
the jewel of this class is [hands down]
LAKALAKA
I’m super confused on Taliulu. Didn’t he commit to UH two days ago??
From yesterdays blog:
#477 Steve – If you or anyone else has a problem with the Softball Booster Club please have them contact me at pomai at nawhaine dot com. But to call us crooks on this blog is not right. If you have any complaint with what we do come on out to the first game and let us know, we will be there under the tent in the front of the RWSS.
50… Fonua, Ursua….
The keys of this class are Lakalaka and Ursua in my opinion. Skill guys, athletic, leaders, and big time playmakers who makes big plays. Chime in. To all the committed recruits for Hawaii, thanks for becoming Warriors.
good morning tsaikos. all right, right now st shows a dozen signees. i hope to see later in the day about 6-8 more signees. to all da new warriors, thank you and welcome. it was worth waiting for today and coach chow and his crew is doing a very good job of assembling a solid foundation for da warriors.
It doesn’t piss me off that Taliulu is going to WAZZU.
But I am mad that he committed to us on Sunday night this close to signing day then decommiting putting our coaching staff in a tough spot to find a guy this late.
one door closes, another opens
Taliulu
So much for starting a tradition huh!
I hope he knows the whole state hates him now lol
Given that Justin Turner still has academic stuff he needs to complete, is that why he is not on the list? Same for Sione Lavaka?
BIK
#58…..nah, no make like that. I’m sure was one hard decision fo him. No worries beef curriez. We have a great group of Warriors!
BIK
Remember, recruiting ‘aint over. I’m sure we will see a few more signees before the week is over.
BIK

ahem….

o boy. wait till i call up #10 dis morning.
and chewl him da news
na na. j/k j/k ๐
Looks like Fiso signed with Arizona State
Listening to the Bobby Curran Show. Not a single peep about UH Football recruiting in the entire first hour of his show. Does he even care or know anything about the team? He cares more about the stupid NY Giants.
#58 speak for yourself
Maybe the whole state you talking is your own personal “state”
What impression or what message would you like to give local and mainland recruits?
Tallyho Taliulu. Right now, the entire state feels like we want to give you a body slam (wrestling lingo). Have a nice day! We will. I’m with Jeezy on this one.
I agree with jeezy33 56.
Did I mention I totally agree with 56?
Taliulu reminds me of Steve. not dat he’s going away, make @$$ da way he wen leave.
but I agree. Good for WASSU. and good for us too.
anyway, i agree with d1shima too. one door closes, another door opens. no doubt about it. Coach Chow gonna get a more solid minded recruit, knows where he’s going.
Go Warriors.
#65, hatred may be a bit strong, but I am sure you see the point. If a girl says she’ll go out on a date with you Sunday, then ends up canceling and going out instead with someone else just a few days later, it stings, and you probably aren’t focusing on wishing her well. Especially so when the date was to last 4 years.
overall, pretty disappointing class.
Not enough skill level talent…
Glad we are stocking up on big boys but we all knows speed kills and this class is lacking it..
Lets hope we still have a chance at Carnell Boyd and Marrell Jackson
Welcome young men. Mahalo for accepting the privilege of becoming Warriors for life. Choose and make use of your time here wisely.
As for all of our other local athletes flying under the radar that are going to colleges abroad to play ball, I bid you all the best. Make us proud! Represent Hawaii well!!
now to wait for k sai, b fonua, and s lakalaka. those 3 are setting the foundation of future warriors from hawaii hs. it also puts our coaches in play for future players from hawaii hs which is supa.
jeezy33
you gotta wait till da LOI day festivities in Waikiki makes da announcments before you go jumping on d “i’m disappointed” soapbox. just wait.
you already know get samoa coming. i’m not happy dat summa da big bruddaz went to odda schools, especially peeps like FISO. but I am not worried. Coach Chow just getting started.
Rumors are that Taliulu will be asked to grayshirt at Wazzu. That would be hilarious if true.
to those fb players who signed with other schools, best wishes and may your dreams come true in your pursuits. no forget to get your education, #1 priority.
Wow Taliulu made a real U turn
thanks for da wise words whitey 71. thank you thank you.
Scout.com has Hawaii and the other new members listed under the Mountain West Conference.
I like Anthony Pierce! I think he’ll be an impact player!
I just added this webpage to my feed reader, great stuff. Cannot get enough!
72. I have a pretty good idea on the recruiting class though. It is mostly linemen. We needed to catch up on TE so I do understand.
Just stating an obvious fact that this class will lack speed.
I didn’t expect a great class considering the timing of things.
Just sucks when we got close to so many talented players but just couldn’t seal it.
79:Jeezy there still are a few under the radar speedsters out there and like ST said we have a month to go and find more players who wanna be a part of something special…
Well like I said, I hope we can find a way to get Marrell Jackson and Carnell Boyd here. It is very late so most of the good ones will be signed
Teams over book so some players may look to go elsewhere. Maybe here?
We need to welcome the guys who decide to sign on to be a Warrior. We also need to wish good luck to those players who decide to go away. There is no hate in THEIR decision.
Will Bobby Curran stop talking about the Super Bowl for 1 minute???
Its Wednesday and no one cares here
Emeril Lagasse “happy, happy, happy. Bam!” That’s probably how us Hawaii faithful feel about Taliulu’s switch to WSU. Oh well, the sun will rise tomorrow in Honolulu. You know the temperature in Pullman, Wa now? Freezing. I’ve been there. That’s why I live here.
recruiting kind of reminds me of fishing. you put your line out for ahi, catch sum aku, mahimahi, and ono. just when you think, ok, time to cal it quits, you get 2 marlins. that’s how i look at this recruiting season.
Yup get 4 more recruits coming in this weekend.
ok, time to go to breakfast of champions and i can see that the day will be brighter and warmer for da warriors. go warriors.
porgot, to all our tsaikos, enjoy, cheer, and feel good. your mind and body deserves it.
should be hearing on a decision from ron fields soon.
Good riddance Taliuli. Weather in Pullman, WA, sucks during the winter. Sort of reminds you of Siberia!
Two years down the road, “See mom, I told you I should have signed with UH! It’s too cold up here!”
Mom says, “Taylor give coach Chow a call, see if he’ll catch you on the rebound.”
Chow says, “Simba, that’s the circle of life, unfortunately the circle closed to you two years ago.”
BC wearing on people? I thought it was just me. Maybe too long in one place isn’t a good thing. Plus, I’m a 49er fan so, well, I’ll leave it right here. Thankfully, Pacheco’s show is only one hour.
so how come
Kekoa and Pride
not standing up for Kamehameha? ๐
If it’s true that Taliulu will go to WSU as a grayshirt… wow, that’s pretty hard to fathom.
KKEA 1420 SUCKS!!! NLOI Day and all Bobby Curran talk about is his Giants and Super Bowl. Last straw. Boycotting their Advertising products.
(Some) people on here are really stupid. You think a kid rather play at UH with terrible facilities and a bad education. Get real. Even WSU in the middle of nowhere has more to offer and the Pac-12 is as good as it gets. Just be supportive and stop hating. How many of you even got offered a scholarship to play football.
Pocho, I’m cracking up man!
HawaiiMongoose
nothing hard to fathom.
wish him good luck. move on.
I, like everyone else is disappointed to hear that Taliuli “changed” his mind. But give the KID, a break. Its a stressful time for some of these young men, especially when they are torn between where they WANT to go, and where people THINK they should go, or in some places where they are TOLD they should go.
Yes…he should not have decommitted just a few days ago, but I’m sure he was caught up in the moment, surrounded by his good friend (Lakalaka), who made a huge announcement that he was going to stay home, which excited the entire state.
Much like Jeremy Perry a few years ago, what should be one of the most exciting days of this young man’s career (signing day), may turn out otherwise.
ho boy. 100 and it ain’t even 8 am
Lakakala wore a green shirt, green tie and green shoes.
96.
What is your point??? I don’t care he chose WAZZU. I care that he committed 2 days ago and decommits last night… That’s no class and lack of maturity. Just dont commit to Hawaii and wait it out if you were still considering WAZZU
The Man #95: Say, you may not want to ban every advertiser…the male enhancement clinic may come in handy someday! LOL
Dan-O
das what i was trying fo tell brudda T.
“what should be one ofthe most exciting days of this young man’s career may turn out otherwise. ”
you sound like a lawyer. ๐ da oddawise wen give you away.
like most peeps, i really no kea. its da make @$$ aspect dat makes me all habut cuz das a reflection on my bros and sis who went Kam schools. ๐
maybe das why Pride no stay writing. ๐ maybe he stay comatose.
I know is doesnt really mean much but sites like rivals and scout are going to rate this class below 90. I know it is not over because people are visiting this weekend but the people visiting this weekend probably didnt have any real offers. To be honest I thought we would have a better class but I hope they prove me wrong
Re #96, spare us the Pac 12 snobbery. WSU has no more to offer academically than UH Manoa. The Carnegie Foundation rates them both as “Very High Research” doctoral universities, which puts them both in the top 2% of colleges and universities nationally. U.S. News & World Report rates them both as tier 1 national universities, which also puts them both in the top 2%. They are both national standouts in certain areas, for example WSU in chemical engineering, veterinary medicine and agricultural science and UH in astronomy, geophysics and oceanography. People take UH far too much for granted. It isn’t Stanford, but neither is WSU.
#96 I agree with you on the fact that folks can be upset, but that should be the extent of it. Decisions were made…pau all ready, move on.
I really disagree with you on the other part. I know a bunch of folks who have gone to UH and have gotten a great education followed by a terrific career. True the facilities may not be equal to many if not all of the Pac 12 schools, but a real player who wanted to make a difference would look beyond the physical to see what the experience could hold. Mr. Lakalaka could have chosen that campus with their facilities but chose UH instead, even with the poor facilities. In intrinsic value of the UH experience simply outweighed the extrinsic value of 5 star facilities. In the long run, if that was the part of the decision making, I believe Mr. Lakalaka probably would reap a greater lifelong benefit for choosing in that manner.
Life is what it is. For those who decided to go, best of luck. For those who chose to come or those who chose to stay, welcome aboard. I’m certain Coach Chow is a man of his word and when you live up to yours, the Warrior experience will be one that would reinforce the initial decision you made to become a Warrior.
Fields: “great day to be a warrior”
GetReal.
i find solace in da fak dat get plenty wishy washy in da world, so brudda T is not alone.
you like help brudda T? make sure his grades stay good. he works supa hard at being da best in his position, and he brings credit to himself, his family, and ergo Kam school.
I am not criticizing his decision to go away. I am dumfounded dat he goes on statewide media, makes a commit to da home team, and da day before da day before, he changes his mind.
that makes everything else pale to the fact that he wen wishy washy. sorry. no amount of whining gonna change my mind on dat one, kid or not. we’re talking our State football team.
KITV website says Brostek chose Washington
yeah for Mr. Fields. great day for Hawaii.
kden, gotta go work. have a nice day Tsaikos.
BC is a donkey. Not covering LOI for Hawaii recruits, sad.
GOOD MORNING HAWAII!
If someone wants to make a** on TV declaring and then two days later going elsewhere, maybe he is practicing to be a professional politician. Maybe he wanted his 15 seconds of fame.
But life goes on.
GO WARRIORS! GO BOWS!
So, who else are we waiting on today?
It is disrespectful to say UH is a bad school. On the contrary UH is a very good. Academically, the standards here are the highest in the MWC, only below Air Force. Yeah, it’s not the PAC 12, but that’s not the point. It’s what you do after you finish college and what kind of person you become.
Well said, Tom! Ramsay Wharton live now on KFVE.
Come on guys, leave Taliulu alone. Jeezy, the kid is a high school senior. He made an emotional committment out of excitement and changed his mind. Have you never changed or mind about something? Especially something so important? He didn’t show “no class” or lack of maturity. He changed his mind, simple as that. If you take his de-commit so personally, then I think you have a bit too much invested in HIS personal life.
And don’t you think that coaches in general have contingency plans should someone decide to de-commit? Of course they do. You may know a lot more about what happens behind the scenes than I do, and I appreciate how accurate you are with your posts. But you don’t know everything the coaches are doing. I doubt Coach Chow is pouting behind his desk wondering “what do I do now?”
Be proud of those that have chosen to stay, and wish those that didn’t the best. Then move on.
I wonder if Fields was messing with Hawaii fans whole time. Hard to imagine UDUB going juco route with all these blue chips they are signing
Let’s not forget that we do have pretty fast skill players on the team already. And some of them are young yet.
They haven’t received Fields’ letter yet, but that shouldn’t be a problem.
Spelling. Clark Evans. I don’t see Ursua’s name yet.
@96,
It’s not that he’s going to a PAC-12 school. Just a little annoyed that he committed to UH on Sunday and is putting our coaches in a bind. I’m sure Coach Chow will find a way to fill the scholarship with another talented player, so I’m sure it’s not a big deal.
Ursua signing:
https://www.facebook.com/UtahSportsAction/posts/100679783395108
Boycott 1420am advertising products!! BC is an idiot for not talking about a big day for UH football. BC is an R-tard.
Where are all the Waianae, Farrington, and Kahuku boys going? Can they walk on to the Warriors this summer?
Agree that Taliulu was classless. Why publicly announce you want to carry on the tradition, represent Hawaii, blah, blah, blah, then two days later change your mind.
Nobody is railing on Brostek for choosing UW, because he handled the situation far more professionally. Good luck to him.
Turner not signing today
J_Turner_1 Justin Turner
I will NOT be signing today, I have a few more options im considering. But don’t get it wrong Hawaii is still in the picture!
ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:
The ones who are pooh poohing those who decided to not go to UH…are these the so-called UH fans who will boo them when they take the field against the Warriors? Remember Micah Matsuzaki for BYU? That was pretty shameful of some of the UH Fans to boo him.
Nanakuli:
Hey, shouldn’t you be asking about Nanakuli players?
Ron Fields is gonna be a Warrior!!
Anyone know the programming director or Owner’s email address for 1420am? I can find Bobby Curran’s email address from their website, but what good will that do…he’ll just delete any complaints sent to him. He needs to go, he hurts UH Football more than anything because he doesn’t drum up the interest on his program. He’s more concerned about the NFL, the Giants, and other schools recruiting efforts. The guy is a total joke. The last person I hated this much was Herman Frazier.
Losing Brostek and Fiso stung a little, but all in all a decent first recruiting class for NC. I like how we’re getting taller and bigger guys, not only the linemen but across the board. Should definitely help with the new offensive/defensive schemes we’ll be running.
Yup this class is rated in the 90’s. But gotta give them credit for a months work. Lets see next class. As for taliulu, dont sweat it. Or him. I watched his video and he is not that good. Doesnt make plays. He reacts a little late. His tackling is very weak and not solid. Almost always out of position. No aggression. Didnt think he was worth a pick. Just benefitted from being on a good team. Must have someone under the radar that is better. We will see. He wont become a starter there. Maybe special teams. Thats it for him. He is no torres or maeva. So dont worry. Let him enjoy his off island experience.
@128,
That’s disappointing.
#96 Relax! Being criticized is part of the sports world, it is a part of everyday life. Talking down on the University of Hawaii is like talking down on the entire state. If you live here in the 808, then maybe you should do two things, either keep to yourself, or move outta dodge. There are other forums to go an to express your positive opinions you may agree upon. If I last recall, I think UH has higher standards then some of the schools in the PAC 12. Stay off the forums if you can’t take the heat. You will read positive and negative things in the sports world. That’s a part of life.
Any reveals on “rebounders”? Would this be the day when that would be announced?
#127 I agree, that’s how you do it, with class.
Any surprises in the works or is this it?
Chee I like what I see so far from this recruiting class. Coach Chow went after the big boys in the trenches this recruiting class for a reason cause that’s where it all starts. If your lineman cannot block then it doesn’t matter if you had Drew Brees signal calling, Adrian Peterson running the ball or Larry Fitzgerald to catch passes, they would get destroyed. We have QB’s who can throw, we have Receivers with speed who can catch, we have bulldozers in the stable ready to steamroll, but without the big boys on the line your offense ain’t gonna do jack squat… The type of lineman recruited are all big mauler type guys, which only tells me our running game is about to be vicious. With Lakalaka in the mix, Will Gregory waiting to shine, Sterling Jackson, Joey Iosefa, Leaf, etc… get enough horses for us have a legit running game. We have talent and players will only get bigger, faster, and stronger if they have the will and work ethic. Think about guys like Kealoha Pilares who was pretty manini when he first went transfer than by his Junior/Senior year he was a beast on the field and in the weight room. The defensive guys Fonua, Lavaka, and Allen are all big time players and I guarantee each one will be and impact guy. Figure we still got Vele from last class and if we can get back Faalologo, Mamea dem we going have a mean linebacking core to work with. Our secondary going be okay with better coaching too. Edwards and Hardy-Tuliau are All conference caliber players…throw in Sellers who should be improved after showcasing his stuff last year and thats a pretty decent group. Then you bring in a speed ball hawk guy like Pierce and hopefully Fields and Turner make it too and now you talking a mean secondary…
In any case I’m glad Ursua chose to come back home. To me, he is going to be man handling defenses. Evans should be an immediate impact guy at TE too… The guy I most like though is Leo Koloamatangi, that dude is straight vicious the way he blocks. I’d like to see him lineup next to Lefotu and watch both of them flatten DLineman all day!
Re: Turner.
Here’s the deal. If he enrolled at UH in January, he would have needed about 26 credits by the end of the second summer session to be eligible to play in 2012. If he stays at JC, then he can probably play in 2012. The risk is he became a free agent by UH deciding to wait until after the spring semester.
What is all this hate for Taliulu. We have all made emotional, spur of the moment decisions that we later regret. Taliulu felt strongly about going UH at the time, but when he sat down and thought about WSU seemed like to the better option for him. That’s fine.
If its true that he will be asked to grayshirt at least he will be able to go up there see what it is like. It will tell him if really is the right place.
If not, he can come back home and play for us.
These players are all teenagers with big decisions and its probably real hard to make decision. We should congratulate Taliulu for his scholarship and wish him best.
As I jokingly used to tell some friends and other football players, if you choose to go away I am happy for you, but know that I won’t necessarily be rooting for you or your team on Saturdays. I will wait 4 or 5 years when I can cheer for you on Sundays.
#128…my take? Pull the offer. Either you want to come here, or you dont. Considering more options means he’s getting/waiting some late offers.
1420 Sucks!! Biggest day for Chow’s and Hawaii’s team and BC blows us off!
I agree with #108-Buffoman totally.. It is what it is.. we gotta remember that while we call them young men, they’re still boys in lots of respects. Even as adults, we just try to make the best decisions we can.. what we think is “right”.. just think about the stresses that our kids are under when faced with a decision like this..
I wish ALL our kids the best, whether they decide to stay or go away.. yeah of course we want them to play for the Warriors! But we gotta let them go too.. and don’t say things like “hate”..
thanks for ALL the recruits that signed with the Warriors.. no matter where u may come from!
any word on Shane Brostek? or did i just miss any news…
ST,
Will Coach Chow have a press conference introducing the new recruits like Coach Mack?
Quite a few good receuits. But most of all, a disappointing class nonetheless.
#132 – I think Duane Kurisu owns KKEA. I just read that the general manager is leaving or has left the station. I think his company is called aio.
The thing people have to remember about Taliulu is that he committed to Washington St very early on and had nothing but good things to say about his visit there. I keep hearing that people are upset that he de-committed from us to go there but no one is really mentioning that he had to de-commit from Washington St first. He probably went to his visit to Manoa and bonded with the guys and ended up making an emotional decision to stay home. Upon further reflection he decided to stick to his original commitment…nothing wrong with that. The fact is, he was solid with WSU and didn’t even have to visit Manoa. I give him props for keeping his mind open and wish him luck.
Finally! BC covering Lakalaka on 1420.
Whow! That was short!
I haven’t listened to BC this morning, but it is a joke if he doesn’t cover recruiting at all. Colin Cowherd talked recruiting this morning and if is front and center on the ESPN and SI websites.
http://247sports.com/Player/Ronald-Fields-17789 says he committed to UH.
#145 – Brostek headed to UW
@151,
Even here in NYC they are talking recruiting… LOL, BC is ridiculous.
I hope and Chow and staff can coach better than they recruit.
GOOD MORNING 808 lots to look forward to today
first adding my welcome to all new warriors and mahalo for your choice. may your addition to the current team brings supa fortunes this up coming season. looking forward to seeing you representing da GREEN. congrats to the hard working coaches and coach chow.
to those leaving good luck and best wishes. represent HI well.
kope time and still waiting anxiously to see what other recruits choose UH this letta of intent day. have a good day all
Signing day 2012 BABY!! Welcome to the Warrior Ohana to all the new dudes! To others who chose to go elsewhere, much luck and hope our teams meet one day.
Best way to boycott BC is to not listen to his show. He’s a joke and it’s too bad we have to listen to his play calling cuz if it wasn’t for my love for UH sports, he’d be turned off a long time ago!
Is BC not mentioning UH’s LOI day because his buddy Rich Miano wasn’t hired? If thats the case, sheesh how immature can you get.. Are we back in elementary school?
Is that Long Snapper still walking on?
I think it is positive that the recruits we are bummed about losing are being lost to PAC 12 schools. It is good that we are competing with UDub, UCLA, Wazzu, Arizona, etc for athletes rather than SJSU, SDSU, Fresno, NMSU, UNLV etc.
crap gangie at least for today be happy in the recruits who signed with da warriors and will stay home. in addition also be of good spirit and aloha for those who got the opportunity to play at oddah places.
get over it cause it is what it is ……….. NUFF SAID
I have a question for all WB bloggers. I’m just curious. Does anyone know or can figure out how many local boys that go away eventually play in the NFL as compared to Hawaii boys that stay home. Also add in the Hawaii recruits that plays or played in the NFL. I thought we do pretty well in Hawaii considering that the local boys that go away are usually “Blue Chip” type of players. #142 shutb45 got me asking this question. I know Oregon has a lot of Hawaii boys on their roster but, how many of them actually go on the the NFL? Same with Washington or other mainland schools.
Funny how you guys say this class is not good cause we never get this guy or that. None of these dudes even played a down yet, none of them have been coached up yet by our Coaches, none of them have hit Coach Tommy’s workout regimen. No worry some of these guys going be stars, some role players, some may be scout team guys… Regardless not every big name player makes an impact at the college level. Some guys blossom in college and it all depends on the individuals work ethic. From what I see these boyz Coach recruited are all beasts as each was either an All-Star or impact player in their own respective leagues. That tells me they have the will and desire to be outstanding players and will work hard to continue their path… Just wait and see… If Taliulu like go to WSU, then that’s cool, wish you was a Warrior but no make any difference to me. Yeah it sucks but as long as they know their roots and where they from and still represent then all is good. Take for instance Manti Te’o, sucks he never consider UH but look at what he is doing at Notre Dame. Bruddah is one of the best linebackers in the nation and one easy choice to be a first round draft pick in the NFL. When people talk about him, he always knows where his roots is at and he represents Hawaii. Shute why you think everybody is trying to tap into the Polynesian triangle to recruit nowadays. We pump out more talent on the college and professional football level than almost every other state. Besides California, Texas, and Florida, Hawaii is right there in terms of talent level for football. At least Coach Chow and Coach Rauscher making the effort to tap our own backyard for seeds to plant in our own soil. Some seeds going grow roots someplace else but the ones who like our soil garrans going blossom once our Coaches nurture them the right way. I get full faith things going to be even better than before. June Jones was great, Coach Mack was great, now Coach Chow is going to take us to that next level…
ST what ever happen with Thor Salanoa,T.J. Alofipo, Zach Quines?
I heard that UH is bringing in Marrell Jackson, Andre Lewis for this weekend.
Taylor Taliulu said some pretty bold things that were quoted in both the printed SA as well as on this blog. In the end, he couldn’t walk the walk but could only talk the talk.
I wish him well.
@162,
Great point about local NFLers. Definitely worth looking into.
Very good prospects. Good job to all coaches and thank you for choosing
University of Hawaii. Go Warriors!!
Looks like Sione Lavaka went to Northern Arizona University.
On my #162, I’d really appreciate any answer. I have to go now to take care of some business. I will catch up. IMHO it’s turning out to be a great day in recruiting. Remember, we got 4 more coming in this weekend. Aloha.
i’m in agreement with everyone here. to say the lack of recruiting coverage by 1420 is disappointing would be an understatement.

Who the hell cares where these kids go to SCHOOL? A very small percentage — whether they play at UH or abroad — will make it to the next level. Has anyone looked at UH as an academic institution versus schools like UW, OSU or USC? Those of you who question a high school senior’s decision of where to attend college are just missing the bigger picture. Wish them well if they leave and welcome those who choose to be Warriors. Period.
#160, I agree!
On the BC thing, yeah, I miss Kanoa and Rob Demelo show. At least it gave us another option.
uhbooster…
T.J. Alofipo played at AWC but I’m not sure where he is at now. He really wasn’t too much of an impact guy at A-dub and played sparingly.
Zach Quines is still at AWC playing and working on his associates to transfer I believe. I see him all the time on campus and around town. He is a guy I hope makes it back to the aina. This year he started on and off and played hurt. Regardless Coach Minnick had him as a hybrid DE/LB and he was an impact on the field. He is rangy and pretty quick but the thing is bruddah Zach can lay the smack down and plenty mean hits this year. I’m not sure if he’s eligible for D1 status yet and might have another year here at AWC…
Coach Chow’s first group is a good soup.
ppj2,
To me das in the “fun fak” category for fans.
For parents, stuff like:
– How many graduate in 4 or 5 years?
– How many go on to post-graduate programs?
– How many end up in a satisfying career?
– How many end up in a community that lets them flourish?
das mo’ important.
Wacchu tink?
KKEA?
All I gotta say is da moa no lissen, da easier fo scoop prizes! ๐
The real question is.. have they addressed the needs and weak spots in the team with these recruits?
Pauoa Boy, Mahalos for the update. Anyone know what’s up with Thor Salanoa?
http://www.facebook.com/HawaiiAthletics has been updated with tidbits regarding the recruits.
Congrats to all the student-athletes who are able to continue to play the sport they love, and to have someone else besides their parents pay for it.
Good luck to all that chose Hawaii and all that are leaving the 808; no matter what you read here, you are still sons of Hawaii and daughters of Hawaii, this is and will always be your home.
Don’t let the words of many has beens, wanna be’s, and never will be’s, bother you. This blog is filled with maniacal fans who bleed green, gotta love them, but sometimes we have people drop in to share their mana’o, and they’re not too nice.
Get your education, represent the 808, and make us proud. Academics before athletics always, look at it in the dictionary….always.
Imua Lanakila to all the student-athletes who signed today, BIG CONGRATS
d1,
#175 is right on….and den some ๐
Stretch #83 –
Excellent!
D1,
It’s ok because with callers like Stan fr downtown, Mike from Waimanalo, “Bruddah Bobby”, and Gary Dickman’s favorite “Matthew” they will have a good amount of callers still yet.
It’s ok. I enjoy the Sports Animals more anyway.
I also liked it when you had both Don and Scott Robbs filling in for the morning show.
Also dearly miss Leahey and Leahey on AM1500.. OH! And Rob DeMello and Russell Yamanoha put on a good show back then also!
People should try check out MANOA UNDERGROUND as well…
Wednesdays at 7pm. ๐
Th previous football coaching staff was on KKEA all the time. Where are the new coaches? I have to go to an LA station to listen to Norm Chow.
Chris Hart get in the game please!
While I like NC first recruiting class, it ain’t much different than Mack’s or JJ as far as the local players go. We have always managed to get a few of the top 10 guys, usually towards the bottom of that top ten and it hasn’t changed with Chow yet. It doesn’t matter who we have at Coaching, until we become a consistant winning team or improve facilities we are going to have a hard time landing the top guys. To do so we need to start selling out the stadium. The program needs money to be successful. So for all of you who complain about players who go away, if you ain’t a season ticket holder you have no right to complain. What are you doing to help this program?
Chef Chow will now stir in some local ingredients.
Add some potatoes.
Stir over warm heat with love and patience…
And suddenly turn up the heat…
And wahlah!
Come September, the perfect chowder.
Mmmmm mmmmm good.
ST, the neighborhood kids all play for Waianae.
#187 – What UH needs is someone like a Phil Knight who will donate hundreds of millions of dollars to the university. Knight has almost singlehandedly elevated Oregon from a bottom tier Pac-10 program to one regularly competing for Pac-12/national championships. Didn’t UH regularly beat the Ducks back in the day?
you guys are seriously getting carried away with all this recruits/commitments. two words: pesefea fiaseu. remember him? st louis running back, I think he was a 3 star prospect that many pac 10 schools wanted… and what, he played maybe a dozen downs total in his career at UH? relax people!! be patient coz most of these guys won’t see light of day in playing time for another couple years. let the players play, the the coaches coach.
For those without ADULT A.D.D. again, try wait to see what Coach Chow and Co. will be able to do with a full YEAR of recruiting.
Remember loi lasts for bout a month.
Of the recruits listed on today’s SA only one did not honor his pledge to UH. Guess who?
John Ursua made my day when he was quoted “I’m excited.” “it’s going to be good to be a Warrior.”
With Anthony Pierce and Ronnie Fields on board I won’t miss Taliulu. When they go away after awhile it’s like out of sight, out of mind. Kinda like what happened to Kama Bailey and that St. Louis DE who decided on Colorado who’s name escapes me now. See how soon we forget! We will celebrate those who want to represent our great State. As Coach Chow it’s all out pride baby.
great day to be a WARRIOR! one step at a time. the first few steps have been taken. get plenty more to go. patience. watch the transition, enjoy the show.
WELCOME NEW WARRIORS!
168.
No you guys see why I was scratching my head about that commitment and didnt buy into big time schools looking at him?
Whenever we play a team that has a local player on their roster, I feel bad for that player’s family. They gotta sit on the other side away from friends and possibly other family… or bite their tongue on the Warrior side if they are season ticket holders.
aren’t there about a half a dozen POY’s on our recruit list?
and above all else, wen the signing is pau…
Tell Ma!
๐
Did Fields sign? His name isn’t on the list above.
I normally do not follow recruiting until letter of intent day– there is just too much noise (exception this year because it is Chow’s first).
And this was pretty much the policy of most of the news stations. You get better information following Scout and Rivals if you want that information and now you have this blog too.
Curran really has a larger audience and they don’t care about the on again and off again news like you guys. They want to know who did we get and what does coach Chow think of them. And non of the coaches can comment until the LOI comes in.
As soon as Chow comments– at 2 PM Press Conference, ESPN 1430 is covering it. Curran occasionally covers recruiting, when he interviews coaches or news guys or the Scout or Rivals people. He should have Tsai and Paul Honda on along with guys from Scout and Rivals. But again, this is like reality TV to most people until the coaches can talk about what they got.
ST what happened to Fanaika? Where did he sign?
196…there’s a side story to it. but, not at this time.
A recruiting class is about filling your needs. Our needs were on the line and at TE. We filled those needs = success. Of course we have no idea how ANY of these recruits will work out, but there is no merit whatsoever to say that this was a disappointing recruiting class. Some need to temper their expectations a bit.
who was fonua contemplating on other than UH last night?
e komo mai new warriors.
Best of luck to Taylor Taliulu and others that signed with other colleges.
Good things will happen by being patient. I’m confident Chow and Co. will get some real steals soon. And we haven’t talked much about the walk-ons yet. Looking for that big leg of a kicker.
Welcome to all the new Warriors…and congratulations to Coach Chow and his staff. How exciting! Congratulations to all the young men and women who had the honor and privilege of doing something most of us have never experienced. Good luck in your endeavors, and most of all, make your family and Hawaii proud.
Fanaika is in overtime, I believe.
Fields said he’s going to sign.
Just have to make sure that’s not Sarkisian at the neighborhood Kinko’s.
It was pretty cool to work alongside Paul Honda this morning. We both aren’t in the office very much. He decided to stay at the Sheraton lobby and use it as an office. Why not? Validation is good for eight hours.
Anyone else to expect to sign today?
ST, get the word out to Norm Chow that UCLA over signed and ATH Tairen Owens is now available
For a months worth of recruiting, I must say NC and staff did a heck of a job and it’s still not over yet.
Welcome to our new WARRIORS, especially Ethan. (Eh, take care your fada)
To our local boys signing on with mainland schools, RIGHT ON. Represent the 808 with much pride.
what ever happened to chad lopati?
for one month of recruiting, this years class is amazing!!!
RB kenny walker also available. mannnn ucla is really screwing these kids over by oversigning.
Welcome new Warriors!!! Congratulations to the Chow and the boys! Can’t wait to take on the condom girls!!
In case you’re interested… At 1pm Hawaii time they will play the International Bowl on CBS Sports and stream it on the web, as well. Team USA vs the World. http://www.usafootball.com/InternationalBowl
I believe that Benny Fonua (sp?) was one of the gems of the entire class and I for one am stoked that Coach Chow got him to sign on as a Warrior. He is a good student, a fine young man and one heck of an athlete.
I’m certain that the others who chose to go away will have some level of success at their institution of choice, but I believe that we in the 808 are going to see a very special student athlete blossom in front of our eyes. Someone mentioned that he could not remember the name of that sought after recruit who chose to go to CU. I believe that it is hard to remember as “out of sight, out of mind dominates. We will see guys like Benny, Paipai, Mr. Yap and Mr. Haonhano perform and we will cheer, support and as they graduate, they will remain a part of our local football talk story culture.
When coach got into the conversations with Mr. Lakalaka, Brostek and Taliuli, folks like Mr. Sai and Mr. Fonua were sort of lost. I for one am super happy they did not waiver on their commitment.
216 Desmond: Ditto, I meant that
Proud to see Hawai’i football players going to D1 wherever they go. The fact UH is getting the attention from Pac 12 bound players is a great sign. We are selling the upside of UH and images of what can be. After the “sell” based on emotion there is always second thought. These are teenagers who have a lot at stake in this decision. The worst thing that can happen is to proceed with the wrong personal choice. Recruits headed to the mainland, best of luck. Do your family, school and state proud and succeed in school and sports. The fact that UH is given a shot and consideration is all we can ask. If things do not work out — give us another look.
Not expecting Fanaika to sign with Hawaii.
Recruiting:
What is, is. What was, was. What will be , will be.
Thank you to those players who signed LOI to represent the Warriors, UH, and the State of Hawaii. I will support you and your coaches!
For those going away – best to you.
Awsome recruites…Mahalo, Coach Chow and staff…great job!
“Lets Go Warriors”
make us fans proud. (Haa’heo)
Mattyboy . . . are you naturally this pessimistic? You have been kind of a downer the past couple of days on the blog. Cheer up man! This is supposed to be an exciting time for Warrior fans. Look at the board, the recruits that we did land are good, solid recruits. Don’t get so stuck on the ones that got away. Better yet, let’s not write off the ones who haven’t even made up their minds yet.
New recruits + current roster players + late transfers/signees + Coach Chow and staff = Very exciting times ahead for UH Football.
Can’t wait til spring ball. Can’t wait til fall camp. Can’t wait til SC!
GO WARRIORS!!!
Good morning everyone!
Welcome to the next generation of UH Warriors!
Considering Chow had less than a month to get at it, I’m impressed. He was definitely swimming upstream vs programs that had years to work on building relationships with some of these kids. Chow has established a very good starting point to build on in future recruiting years.
can’t see how Fonua is not a top-10 local recruit. i guess ferd and the rest of the SA staff have their own opinion of the top-10 local players but how many in the top 10 are from the 2011 D1 state championship team?
thank you Benny Fonua for choosing to be a WARRIOR. you are my top-1.
217…possibly why Lakalaka is a Warrior not a Bruin right now…
226,
Okay okay. I’ll quit being mr. Pessimistic and focus on being mr. Optimistic. No more downer talk. At least for a while lol.
Jus playing
I agree Byson. I think UCLA over signed and cut some players from class
d1 what time you tel ma?
We look pretty thin recruiting class @ DB, hopefully Pierce can be that shutdown CB and the help can go to the other side.
Don’t forget we have Taylor Graham and a bunch of other very good recruits from outside Hawaii!!! This year’s recruiting class is awesome and is better than what it would have been without Norm Chow!!!!!!!!
So did anyone pony up for a table at tonight’s NLI day event at Willow’s?
180 Bulla: Great message for all of Hawaii’s student athletes that committed today to attend a university to further prepare them for their future.
Mattyboy . . . I’m just joking with you too. I’ll save my pessimism for the season after losses. ๐
i like this, da warriors unda coach chow are undefeated right now. sounds excellent.
congratulations to all who signed to be on da warrior team. you are the bestest. welcome and get ready for a great career at uh.
Congrats to all those student-athletes who landed a Division I scholarship whether it be on the continent or UH. Lot of work behind signing day. Mahalos to all of the coaches, teachers, counselors, and parents who made a lot of this possible for these young men. IMHO,local players going away is a good thing for those who wish to do so. I look forward every Saturday on the TV to seeing local athletes representing the 808 – it speaks well for the quality of high school football in Hawaii. I also am really looking forward to Coach Chow and his staff having a full year to recruit and the rewards that may be forthcoming in 2013.
Gotta remember, as one coach said, it’s all a crap shoot with regards to recruiting. You really don’t know how a player will pan out until they put the pads on.
Was listening to that interview nc did with the radio station in cali and thought hmm we had called him and asked him to apply. He said at first he wasnt looking into another shool other then staying at utah until we, called. But in very happy we did call and he applied.
Can’t wait for next season. The Chow dynasty begins NOW!!!!!
i dont understand the grousing. we picked-up some quality players on the line, brought in three studs at the LB position, stocked the shelves with 3 QBs and are set to go at TE. plus we are awaiting word on fields and turner, two stellar DBs with more luster and experience than taliumu. dejon allen is as good or better (better imo) than brostek and his commit to hawaii had huskie fans fuming in bewilderment on their website. moreover, we aint done. further, this kid lance williams maybe the sleeper of this recruiting class. look at his films, his size and gittyup. he plays with instinct and hits to maim. like fiso, he pursues in a straightline. he runs through blockers or by them and uses his hands and feet well to avoid blocks. dont forget our linebackers will be personally mentored by our DC–Thom Kaumeyer. linebacking his is forte.
Im not too sure about Woolsey or Alo, different systems in HS, but again, Chow will be their mentor.
too early to evaluate, but this for sure. look at the geography and the connects of Chow & Co. these guys are mainstreamers and tied into networks from several angles in the west coast, NW and south eastern parts of the US. we have yet to see the best from Chris Demarest. i heard he can recruit. idk if chris will work his old networks (east coast) or establish himself in regions out west.
245…
Ditto.
UCLA “over signing”:
me no sabe – how can a school over sign when they know of the 25 “new” scholarship per year NCAA rule?
say, they signed 29 players – are the “extra” 4 players not entitled to the benefits of the first 25, by contract? IF UCLA, can just say “sorry” we signed too many, will the NCAA “punish those that are released by UCLA (must sit out one year before transferring)” or is UCLA required to count the 4 towards claas of 2013?
how is it that Udub can offer a player during the so-called 48 hour dead period before NOLI day? or, did the offer come before the 48 hour or did the player contact the school?
oopppps, forgot about the 1 phone call rule – damn, so many stinking rules!!!
reminds me of the 99% versus the 1% – rich or BCS schools get all the gravey and cake toppings!!
Let’s see, Coach Chow got 2 of the Top 10 local talent. Being nice will add Fonua, who should have been in the Top Ten, so that makes 3, 30%, with 1 month of recruiting, ok. With one whole year to recruit, and being that next year’s recruiting class will be about 3x better then this years. Coach Chow needs to up that percentage to 70 or 80 percent. Meaning he needs to sign 7 or 8 of the Top 10 local talent, next year. To show that he is able to recruit Hawaii players, otherwise, it will be same-o-same-o, no difference.
#245 Who is Chris Demarest? Is he a coach for us? What does he do for UH?
Holy Smokes!
Just saw Stanford signee Kyle Murphy (OT) featured on ESPN-U. ๐ฏ
Remember when Mack had less than a month to recruit in 2008? I think for the most part Mack’s solid recruiting efforts were very much so underrated.
Regarding how Coach Chow did versus what McMackin did, you have to remember UH was coming off a 12-1 season when McMackin was hired, whereas for this recruiting class, UH is coming off a bad 6-7 season where the coach “retired”.
Given that, I think Coach Chow has done a good job so far.
249: He is our special teams coach. He used to be at Rutgers.
A-House, as long as the NCAA just gives these BCS school a slap on the wrist for violating the rules, they will continue to disregard the rules. Once the NCAA decide to start dishing out the Death Penalty, then the BCS schools will start following the rules, which would give the non-BCS schools a chance at some of these recruits.
Trust me I am not complaining about signing Steve. He is a great player- UCLA will be pissed they let him get away
koakane,
Parts runs today (for real kine)
Tomorrow is another day.
(did I mention that I’m off on Friday?)
WELCOME NEW WARRIORS!!!
ahouse from what I understand, scholies are one year commits only. new coaching staff may not renew some player from the replaced regime. therefor new coaching staff may then gives it to the ones they recruit.
not sure if all schools or programs honors the commitment made by previous staff.
@243 OldSchoolDave
Like PRIDE and I said before – those local athletes represent UCLA, USC, UDub,WAZZOU, Oregon but they do not represent 808.
They are from 808 and they do speak well for the quality of high school football in Hawaii, but they do not represent Hawaii.
d1 gotta tel ma another time den…………
@252,
I don’t mean to compare the two coaches. I was just pointing out that Mack did a decent job of recruiting that year in limited time as well.
seems like an ot from the same school as a pierce has not signed yet although he is a commit to ucla. actually 2 ot’s does not appear to have signed yet with ucla.
Given the circumstance, I think Coach Chow did an outstanding job recruiting this year.
@abunai 245, ST/DB coach. was at Florida, NCS and Rutgers. went into hiatus due to personal stuff and Chow is resurrecting his career. he fits into the Chow profile–aggressive networker, intelligent, relentless. i believe coach sent him in advance to minot re-establish contacts with the kid from ND that was recruited by shaw….
@ a-house 247, scholie overbooking is commonplace bc of academics, de-commits, etc. today, recruiting is a lot like trading options on the stock market–the offering has a shelf life.
koakane, i think here in hawaii, most are honorable so they do respect an athlete on scholarship from another coaching staff. to be a cut throat is not how we live in hawaii.
plenty schools over-recruit. that’s why some wear the gray shirt.
cause nothing is sacred till you sign the bottom line, sometimes it is good to see others like coach sark get a poke in his arse. he lost his top wr to ucla.
(#69 – jeezy33)
Disappointing recruiting class!?!
Brother, were you drinking this morning?!?!
Compared to seasons past, take into account that today makes ONE month that Norm Chow’s been officially on the job, me, I’m totally jacked-up.
The base of the offense and defense for that matter, is the big boyis up front and of course tight ends.
What the team has returning in those spots, including zero TE, well, it’s horrible, it desperately needed an upgrade.
Chow, this staff, they have a style of college football they believe in, a style they will run, they had to get the horses to run that race.
Disappointed, not me!
LauraK,
I’d settle for 4 or 5. BCS schools have always played the faciities, tv exposure and the leave home-growup cards against UH in recruiting.
Now they’re also playing the conference relignment card against UH. They’ll holdup their list of
conference games for 2013 then show Hawaii’s with Boise and SDSU X’d out and Air Force with a ?.
Like Coach said, they know they have a duanting task ahead of them but they won’t back down from any challenge.
Only time will tell how well Chow did with his first recruiting class…
On a side note, I think anyone signing with WASSU is crazy to think that Leach will stay there more than 1-2 years, because he has higher aspirations. And to confirm with other posters, Pullman is in the middle of nowhere and that 2 hour drive from Spokane to Pullman is one of the most desolate stretches of road I’ve ever driven. I took my kid to look at the WSU campus for consideration and the campus is nice, but……..I could see my kid getting severe “cabin fever” before long. And yes, the winters there are brutal…
congrats to all the signees (sp?)
Any word on which existing UH players may have been “cut” because they didn’t adhere to the new policies or missed a meeting?
Chow is supposed to hold a press conference at 2:00 pm today…
OK, I get it!
over recruting = getting commitments which is understandable for various reasons
over signing = school signed or awarded more than the 25 new scholarships per year which is a “no no”.
“slap on the wrist” is standard pushisment for BCS schools by the NCAA – and, agreed that certain HC will continue to do so until a ‘bad thing” happens – by then, he will be long gone and school will be held to the “lack of instutitional” phrase used by the NCAA.
so, if all the BCS schools decide to “dump” the NCAA and form their own whatever, wonder what the NCAA will do? fold? look da odda weigh?
notice ESPN’s top 10 recruiting schools for 2012? 5 or 6 are from the SEC.
Keep working ,fantastic job!
will OC 12 show the 2 pm conference?
dishima, the reason I asked about how many players from Hawaii that go to the mainland make the NFL is because, sometimes that is what recruiters use to lure them away. If they say “come to my school, you have a better chance to make the NFL” a 17 year old can be influenced that way. If we had the stats on that, the Hawaii coaches could say “not necessarily true,” or “we have more NFLers from our school than the local boys that leave Hawaii.” Yes, we have been graduating at a tremendous rate here at UH and that is more important, but to a 17 year old, NFL…… Ok gotta step out again. bbl
1) We have had a 3 assistant coaches on our show from UH so far. Check our archives on the website, the interviews might be there. We were asked by UH to lay off the interview requests during this recruiting period, so we will have more coach interviews coming up.
2) Norm Chow Press Conference today at 2pm on 1420 and espn1420am.com
3) Call the Coach with Norm Chow – Feb 7th, 6pm Outrigger Reef by the Beach Hotel.
4) Alan Miya is not The Bobby Curran Show producer. he books guests for Sports Animals only. Phil Roberts is the “guest getter” for BC.
5) Call me with any complaints or concerns at 275-1040 – That is my direct line, or email me at chrish@espn1420am.com. I really do welcome the feedback.
MAHALO! GREAT DAY TO BE A WARRIOR FAN!
OOPS MY DIRECT LINE IS 275-1047 (nOT 1040! I must have taxes on my mind!)
while recruiting our home boys is vital, strategically speaking, it is not the measuring cup used to evaluate a recruiting class. we need to keep our eyes on the bouncing ball.
look, more polynesians live outside of polynesia than inhabit. not even close. there is a goldmine of talent out there in california, las vegas, utah, texas, etc. that might give Chow & Co an edge, BC these kids want to identify with their roots. however, there are inherent problems too that come with the mainland territory im sure coach is ma’a. bottomline, you look for character and solid academics.
A-House…
If they flagrantly disregard the NCAA .. and “dump’ the NCAA, they will form another entity very similar to it. The entire Athletic Dept would be in chaos if they didn’t. Without rules and a loosely governing body, expenditures would rival the cold war. The cost to run the athletic department in the top tier schools would kill each other off. In the long run, when all the dust settles, it might be good for the mid-majors that get left behind, though.
#259 Tom Mui: Don’t disagree with you. It’s still fun to watch local players playing on national TV, even if I may not be rooting for that particular team. Example: it was cool to see Chester Sua from Kaimuki HS playing for WAZZU, simple because I can’t remember the last time a Bulldog playing D-I ball besides Kila Kamakawiwaole back in 2005. Before Kila, the most recent Bulldog to play D-I was Togi Veu back in 1985.
Having a lot of Polynesians on the team is great but we shouldn’t forget that there are a lot more talent out there than just the Polynesian pool. If we want our kids to succeed in life as well as the field, we need a good balance of all ethnicity out there as possible. I’d love to see more Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and other Asian groups in the mix. American Indian would be good too. In addition to Hawaii, I want us to represent more than just Polynesia.. but the entire Pacific Rim and more.
Does anyone know what Benny Fonua’s decision was? Assuming he had some late offers? From who?
Michael.. Fonua signed with the Warriors.
WAZZU offers a “college experience” being in a college town. Not much to do in Pullman and that can be a negative. Case in point, the number of football players that had run-ins with the law during Paul Wulff’s tenure there. On the other hand, with few distractions, players can concentrate on going to class, studying, training, practice, etc. I think it takes a special individual, as Jack “The Throwin Samoan” Thompson said to attend WAZZU and be successful and not just some party animal.
“Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life” Funny quote from the movie Animal House.
Sorry, my question was poorly worded. What I meant was, who else was he considering? In another article he talks about not knowing what his decision was until he woke up this morning, so I assume he got a late offer or two. Just wondering if anyone here knows where the offer came from? Someone on the scout board mentioned that it may have been USC?
I understand that prior grayshirts/scholies Penitito Faalologo and Ipulasi Eselu will also be on the upcoming roster (although on scholies from previous years, as will be Alo).
Every year there is controversy over the Top 10 Recruits– these are not the top 10 “Best Players”– these are the Top 10 most recruited players and most recruited by the best schools.
Every year a player who is maybe the MVP of his team or league and definitely one of the top 10 best players in the state gets left off because he is not heavily recruited– possibly due to grade, measurables like height and weight and 40 time for the position in question. Also due to never going to mainland camps or Hawaii camps where recruiters and scouts flock. Fonua probably did not get as many big time offers as the other guys in the top 10.
If so, those are two more linebackers.
Haleakala #239
Mahalo, why is it cheaper to demo a house than it is to build it? Because it is always easier to tear something down than it is to build something up, you don’t need talent to tear things down.
We should be encouraging to everyone who is qualified and privileged enough to receive a scholarship to any institution. It would be wonderful if everyone stayed in the 808, but not everyone can and some will leave and some will return. It is through our zealousness that we sometimes overlook the real story, and that is the story about another keiki o ka aina leaving the 808 in pursuit of a higher education.
I wish all the student athletes the best of luck, and may one day you return and give back to the home that raised you.
Aloha ke Akua

BTW what happened to David Katina? Is he still around?
Onward to spring ball. Hope they reinstate the old “Green & White Game and not simply stage a glorified practice session (yes, I know the risk of injuries and all). I once attended one of those at Waianae HS back during Larry Price’s first season and watched the Hula-T run by Alex Kaloi. How about the UH athletic department consider televising the Spring game?
Sorry if I offended anyone with that quote from the movie Animal House. I meant no ill towards anyone.
Peace
@281 Old School Dave – yep, I agree that it is fun knowing he is from Hawaii and that we can do as well as those from the Lower 48 and #49!
No complaints towards the Animals.
I enjoy the Sports Animals. ๐

Chris Hart,
Hope that # is a number at the station and not your personal #.
You never know who or what is on the interent.
I like listening to the Sport Animals as well. At least they seem to care more about UH Football and don’t spend hours talking about unintersting sports topics like Mr. Tom Coughlin, err, I mean Bobby Curran.
Overall, I think Norm and his staff did well in filling those positions of need. I see the remaining 4-5 positions being “discretionary” if there ‘s a super talent that becomes available or to build depth.
ST, Clark Evans. Gotta have his name correct. That’s important to show respect. Domo Arigato!
Are we done today for signing?
I remember when ASU and Wayne Apuna came to town in 1979. Apuna was a Parade HS AA. At the start of the game UH fans were cordial – “Hey, local boy made good in the Pac-10” and all. But after a few tackles and animated gestures, the UH fans turned on Apuna. UH went on to win that game. I read that Apuna and Jesse Sapolu took their recruiting trip to ASU together and that Sapolu was to sign with them. However, when UH coach Dick Tomey visited the Sapolu family’s home, he won over Jesse’s family and he signed with UH.
Joe Onosai was another local athlete who I believe was going to sign with UW back in 1983. UW was here for the Aloha Bowl and Onosai was watching them practice at Cooke Field. UH coach Dick Tomey saw Onosai watching UW practice and he quickly ran down to talk to Joe. Joe eventually signed with UH.
Maybe, Norm and staff can recruit a combo kicker/punter to back-up or replace our existing pair. Like we’ve said, it would be nice to have a kicker who can kick-it out of the endzone and negate a return.
the fields sounds good.
OK, I’m going with the Patriots. I like Tom Brady. I don’t like the Giants because they beat my Niners. Plus, BC likes the Giants.
bowwar, there might be one at uh now, not sure. if he is there, he will need to sit out this season, but this kid is better than what we have now. plus he get speed.
welcome
BEN FONUA. welcome welcome welcome. more laterz….
yup. i am soo excited. and i disagree with sleezy33. ๐
this is an EXCELLENT RECRUIT CLASS.
i guess this group of recruits does not shine to sum, but coach chow and his crew were not looking for shiners, but solid players who will work hard to meet the coaching standards. am glad to see that discipline is a priority and am sure responsibility is not too far behind.
oops. wuz dat an oops?
Norm did a great job considering the time he had.
But he has to do a lot better next year and the years following– we need to raise the level of our talent and combine that with coaching to get more out of our talent.
Scanning the internet to see how some of the other teams at our level (and teams like Houston, BYU, SMU, TCU, and San Diego State who are moving past our level), we have a long way to go and it will take increasing our talent across the board to match what other teams are doing. We need to do better just to keep up with the MWC.
bhf2, i think you misspelled on purpose, but my friend is sleeze on this blog.
it’s official, welcome to the warrior ohana ronald fields.
Do the 4 players that we are bringing in this weekend not have any other offers? Why are they being brought in so late or why have they not signed with anyone else?
Manoa, i understand about the top-10 based on recruiters and scouts. the top-10 i’m talking about is the SA’s top-10. i don’t know what their criteria is to be top-10 but looking at the post season recognition Fonua got by the SA one would think he’d be in the SA top-10. no?
you figure around 120 d1 football teams and 25 schollies each = 3000 schollies.
garans going get plenty top notch high school and jc players flying under the radar. Coach Chow and staff are finding them.
I love the posts that slam this years recruits and grumble about the ones that got away. Sounds like a dork who goes to the Prom only to complain to his date all night night about how much he wants to check out the girls sitting on the other tables. No class! No balls!
Keep posting please.
309 . . . you should also compare money, facilities, conferences, and resources if you are going to use those as comparisons. You can’t expect UH to compete at the same level if they aren’t even at the same level.
No need to advise them on continuing their rants.
Loneliness, delusion, and internet access ensures they will continue.
315 . . . and in the same breath, some of them say these kids have no class. Ironic, huh?
wow, Fields has blurry speed!
Can the NCAA investigate UW for using a recruiting service? Cause if they’re gonna use our recruiting list the least they could do is make a donation to Na Koa…lol
Couch potato,
For a DB he has good hands.. good vision.. speed and finds the holes while working the impromptu blocks. He might also make a good scat back.
Where’s the news on Ronald Fields?
Now is the time to scourge through the players that ended up on the short list from over recruiting at the PAC 12 schools.
Those clowns should all hold hands, take long walks on the beach, watch the sunset and dream together about their pessimistic possibilities.
Oops.. not Ron Fields but that other corner.. the shorter guy.. LOL.. I”m all confused.
Some have pointed to Fields’ Twitter account essentially confirming him sending in his LOI to UH.
many are overlooking gaps in positions that coach chow has to fill immediately.
sexy is good but the grunts win the war.
Bwahahahahahahaha!!!
“Observant” IS observant.
This year class shaping up to be a good one. With more to come!!!!

Good luck. NCAA president Mark Emmert WAS previously the president at UW.
madeinhawaii, either way, looks like the Warriors got a couple of good cb’s.

#305: Huh? A speedy kicker? I hope we get a few kids who were “left” by universities which over recruited.
Kevin.. UH website, and UH twitter confirm Fields..
Per UH’s twitter…
Let’s welcome Ronald Fields to UH! That makes 18 for the 2012 signing class. Ronald Fields (DB, 6-2, 180, Jr,…
Cool video.
Chow’s signing day press conference should be up soon.

324 & 328 . . . Hold hands and walk on the beach? No way, its too hot, and sand gets in your shoes. Not to mention that there is always the chance of a tsunami. The beach is just no fun. Besides, it might rain, and then what? The day is ruined. Forget it, the day would have been ruined anyway even if it didn’t rain. Not to mention the chance of getting hit by a car on the way. That would suck too, and would probably happen, because those kinds of things always happens. Man, this is just typical. The sky must be falling. All of this, on top of a disappointing recruiting class? Are you kidding me? Good thing its 2012 and the end of the world is near.
It looks like they plan to use Ursua at RB, which I think is a better fit for him in this offense. He would have been a stud slot in our old run and shoot. I could see him playing right away for us as a punt returner. We are going to be pretty loaded at RB the next few years.
We didn’t land any DE this year, would be nice if we could bring in atleast one speed rusher. Something that we have been laking.
313 Couch Potato
The Advertiser Top 10 that just came out is of the top recruits in terms who are the most desired Hawaii recruits by college scouts and coaches– so it is who offered and how many offered or chased a player and not how well they played– not the top 10 players, but top 10 prospects if you will. Fonua would probably be in the top 5 best players, but he did not get as much recruiting action and it could have been his position, measurables, 40 times, and his performance in major camps– a lot of the players in the top 10 list went to mainland camps to get recognized.
339 AIIG– where did you hear about RB?
He was interviewed and said he was being given a shot at QB. Tsai also reported that he would try QB and could be moved if it didn’t work out. He could be a RB, but to me he would work well at receiver.
Manoa, got it, thanks.
we’ll see the next 4-5 years how this top-10 develops and see who moves to the next level.
Press conference was very short and not much revealed…
If we have 18 signees, that means we have 7 scholarships available plus potential “gray-shirts”…
A House regarding over signing at UCLA they are saying here that he is dumping some players. But lots of drama here in LA about the over signing.

Otto, did you see? no mo Noga’s in CoH.
No more honorable man than Norm Chow…..do not know him but have watched his product forever…..football is nice life is better…they can go hand in hand….this is a good class…no this is a great class….Coach Chow would not approve of making bad of someone or somrthing that did not go his way….he will make his way…those who follow…will make their way…they will be better. This is going to be avery good situation for the “Warrior” program. It will make us all proud—-Go Warriors
On a positive note, what coming from me. The Warriors seem to have the making of an excellent Defensive Seconday, with Fields, Edwards, Tuliau, and hopefully, Turner, or Pierce. What is better, they will be all underclassmen next year. Meaning they will be around for at least 2 years.
PolyMom:
If plenty of discussion, and I presume they are negative about the HC and his staff, perhaps there will be repercussions from the high school coaches and players who have or will consider UCLA in the future.
Does not speak well of the coaches and UCLA – “lack of institutional control”.
Back to my previous post, how can a HC “dump” players after they have signed a LOI? or, are the players being “dumped” commits who did not sign a LOI or will move to “gray-shirt status” or being totally cut off by the HC?
Obviously, by the posts and comments of the recent past; we have been denigrating (by fixating on what we want, rather than what we need) the the ability of the team members currently enrolled in the system. I’ve been luriking during the previous week and have found, that if I were a present player on scholarship; my worth would not be as great , as those we are seeking.
What the present coaching staff (in my opinion) is looking fo,r is what will enhance what we currently have, and build on it.
I saw the Lakalaka video, this kid will be a good one. He reminds me of Alex Green, he has great vision and hits the hole fast. He should see the field this year.
Lakalaka reminds me of Junior Lopati. I think if he was not hurt, he would have been playing of Sunday’s in the NFL.
#351 as they say “tru dat”…..the existing roster has a ton of talent—–they are good people and as they say where I am from…they will get more gooder
The pieces of the puzzle are in place. Let’s see what Coach Chow can do to assemble a winning program.
#245 – good one. It’s more than i had expected & we are still competing with bcs teams.
Imagine next year and the year after that. Go Warriors and Good Job Coaches.
339 – Dejon Allen is a Defensive End if I’m not mistaken… Leo Koloamatangi can play Defensive End but most likely will be on the offensive side of the ball. We get some defensive ends in the house waiting to shine no worry. Paipai going lead the way…
Congrats to all new Warriors! I feel that coach Chow and crew did a wonderful job with recruiting in the limited time. I’m sure with the next recruiting class he will have made constant contact with top Hawaii prospects and building positive relationships. He will most likely get a few for what ever reason, but couple those built relationships with a winning season and he will reel in a lot more. Best of luck coach and Warriors!

Your English is weird…
I think Oregon is also guilty of over recruiting, so it should be interesting to see what falls out of their programs…
Wonder how they did in raising money today. Didn’t they charge $2,500 per table? Was it a sell out?
I feel we did well for who we are – a mid-major program in a mid-major University with a somewhat more difficult level of admissions. We need to compete for athletes that many of the BCS teams want – athletic and academically successful athletes.
Where we might get a break is in the recruits that are dropped or given gray-shirt options from the PAC 12 schools. A couple here.. a couple there…
Great Fields of recruits on this LOI Day with Field finally coming in with LOI.
Coach Chow and staff did a tremendous job of reruiting with the short time available to them.
Knowing coach Chow with his offensive mind but we did a hell of a class on defensive side of the ball with this 2012 recuits. (Allen, Fields, Fonua, Garcia and Pierce)
The signing is not over yet as still have (6) more left to fill.
I can’t wait for March spring ball enough just to see how our new (3) TE is going to follow up with 2 more HS recuit coming in the fall.
Good Luck to all Warriors on this LOI Day. You made the right commitment.

I am really happy with this class and as previously stated, there are quality folks returning to learn the new systems from the new staff.
If there seems to be one element that appears to repeat over and over, it is Coach Chow’s desire to be detail oriented. There is a discipline to his approach. May be “old school” but hey, I think it worked well for folks like Coach Saban, MIles and Peterson. His approach to recruiting in a small window was terrific.
I would be surprised if the fundamentals of football were not stressed more strictly if young men wanted to play on Saturday. Hopefully running into a ball carrier and expecting them to fall over will be a tackling technique that will not be acceptable. If our guys tackle like Alabama we’ll stand a very good shot at being competitive in the MWC. We simply did not execute that piece as well as we could have in the past few years.
Run blocking is definitely going to improve and I cannot wait to see the fundamentals instilled in our players.
The new guys have the advantage of not having to re-learn. The returners would need to really pay attention to Coach Chow’s desire to execute to the expectation he is seeking.
DISCIPLINE. Get used to it as I saw it when he first spoke and I don’t believe he is expecting anything less.
Looking forward to a new approach to Warrior football.
Buffoman
talking the talk is not acceptable to Coach Chow.
we got a winner’s winner in Dr. Shaka Lakalaka

Hawaiian to hire flight attendants for expansion.
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaiian Airlines Wednesday announced that it is accepting applications to fill up to 175 new flight attendant positions serving its transpacific and neighbor island routes.
Hawaiian says applications will be accepted until February 14 and must be submitted online to Hawaiian’s website for consideration.

Over recruiting video:
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5935634
that safety from florida, merrell jackson, visiting tomorrow is a stud. he had 9 ints and is 6-1.
no doubt, he is underrated. he can flat out fly and sticks with a hammer. gotta be chris demarest. that’s his territory.
what stood out in the chow press conference today:
1. he estimates 90% of the local athletes already had their minds made up by the time they started recruiting.
2. they are already moving on next year’s class by contacting coaches around hawaii.
3. re homeboys, he wants them to have UNEQUIVOCABLE passion to play for hawaii, otherwise….
4. Chow’s regional strategy is to work inside-out, meaning, Chow & Co will secure their homebase and venture out.
5. they accomplished objectives to fill gaps–TE, OL, DL, LBs, DBs.
6. they are not finished recruiting–three will visit by the weekend.
7. singled out Ben Fonua has the protypical local athlete they are pursuing bc he is passionate about life in general and football in particular. Chow said, Fonua was dressed in shirt and tie during his visit. he also had similar things to say about Steven Lakalaka. coach was impressed by their passion to stay home and become warriors.
8. recruiting is hard work….lot’s of digging. his staff hasnt found permanent accomodations yet. he is about to give them a day off to go golfing or spend a day on the beach.
9. hawaii lost a few at the end bc other schools lost recruits and chased after Hawaii’s booty to cover their losses.
10. this year’s team cannot be accurately evaluated for another 3-4 years. as an example, Chow cited Alabama’s recruiting class of 2008 standing out bc they took the national title in 2012.
11. they hit the road running despite not having the advantage of thoroughly evaluating their team, so spring will help. *(that is prolly the reason for saving a few scholies).
Welcome new Warriors!!!!!!!
Recruiting became even more cutthroat in the West with all the new coaches emphasizing upgrading talent in the Pac 12, with poaching, departing recruiters taking playrs, and over recruiting and cuttting off earlier commits. Look at the recruiting classes for teams we used to measure ourselves against– Boise, TCU, San Diego State, BYU, Houston, and even SMU– it is scary to see what Norm will need to do to catch up or keep up (and some of that competition will be heading the BCS making it harder to compete).
Next year Norm has more time, but he also has to step up the quality.
Welcome to the Na Wahine Soccer recruits, this is coach Nagamine’s second class coming in the Fall.
Rachel Steiker, Defender, Santa Margarita H.S., and the West Coast Futbol club.
Amanda McCaskill, Defender, I’olani H.S.
Carly Mottram, Attacker- Mid or Forward, Mission Viejo H.S., West Coast Futbol club.
Amanda Bates, Forward, Aliso Niguel H.S., West Coast Futbol club.
Fortunately for coach that she was able to fill her needs from a single club in Cali, and the West Coast club is a very good one.
WBB K State defeated Texas by 9 tonight, raising their conference record to 6-3.
We scored pretty good quality. lakalaka in top 40 RBs nationally. sai #3 get in hawaii. ursua top 10 in utah. dejon allen top lineman nationally–ditto for several others (one is ranked #10 nationally as an OG). Evans made JUCO all-american. fields is top 10 as a CB. The QB transfer is a 4-star transfer from OSU. C’mon. the kid visiting tomorrow was given 2-stars, but espn said he maybe one of the top florida safeties in the class of 2012. depends on who is evaluating–coaches or pundits with pot bellies. like Chow said, their evaluation differs from the star-advertiser. look, if we were so feeble, why the hell were the bcs huns going after our recruits?
walang problema. me i enjoying da warriors coaching staff doing their thing right now and look forward to how they organize spring ball and da warriors. know that all of da warriors are working on their off season program, but no forget the class work. take care of your class work and make it easier on yourself.
Hey Ralph,
Going to the Wahine BB game tonight?
Congrats and best wishes to all the athletes who signed their LOIs today, be it for FBS, FCS, DII or DIII football or soccer (which the rest of world calls football).
duffer – #382 – game is tomorrow.
#378: Ralph — She also apparently signed Erica Bates from Dana Hills HS (according to OC Varsity). Earlier, she had a commitments from Lidia Battaglia and Alex Gerrain, but haven’t seen any confirmation yet.
Ooops. #385 – Erica Young (not Bates).

Today’s not Thursday?
Welcome to our new recruits. Thanks for having trust that The University of Hawaii will prepare you you future endeavors. Hope you don’t mind if I occasionly stand and cheer for you over the next few years. I mention this because I yell pretty loudly. Thanks again.
Someone on Sportshawaii is saying that Fehoko Fanaika has chosen Hawaii. Anybody know anything about this?
389,
No that person is spreading false information
That’s what I guessed since there was no link.
389. i dunno about that. i looked here and did not see that yet. http://www.facebook.com/HawaiiAthletics has been updated with tidbits regarding the recruits.
our recruiting crop can only get better. most excellent job Coach. and I like how you tell us not to evaluate you just yet, gotta wait 3-4 years like Alabama.
okay. i can wait. meantime, i’m gonna yell like heck fo da home team. and get my season tix. yeee haaa!!!!!
ESPN has Hasiak on Oregon State’s recruit list
Mr. Kiffin in small kine trouble again?
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/did-espn-shelley-smith-help-lane-kiffin-commit-215108639.html
Murphy to Stanford >> why? had offers from every major powerhouse school on the face of the earth but not Hawaii. The Stanford program is organized, team oriented — they even have folks devoted to providing the most beneficial food regime. For a big kid like Murphy, food is really important. But if I had to bet why he chose Stanford it was the quality of the players he met.
If Chow is going to take this program to a new level, the Stanford program is classy as are the kids and a good example of where this program can go. A class act, quality program attracts talent whether local or Murphy.
Looks like the majority is satisfied with everything ๐
spiss, no arguments on stanford, but does being in the pac-12 vs mountain west make any difference??? absolutely!!!!
not here to argue, but we are at the next level with sum more to go in the future.
It would be great if we could nab another db and lb or two. Maybe another d lineman. All in all it looks like a nice balanced class ๐
Cheehuu 400 for the first time
we still get recuits coming in which is supa, but as the days go by, i am getting more curious about the rebounder(s).
whitey.
i’m a rebounder. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnKmhOu0Gio
Unquestionably imagine that which you stated. Your favourite justification seemed to be at the web the simplest thing to keep in mind of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed at the same time as other folks consider worries that they plainly don’t recognize about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest and also defined out the whole thing with no need side-effects , folks could take a signal. Will probably be again to get more. Thank you
Whitey, if Boise St. can do it, why not the Warriors. Hawaii has more talent in the State, then Boise St. does in Idaho. Hawaii has more to attract talent, then Boise St. does. I believe with Coach Chow, the Warriors can get to the level Boise St. is at. Hawaii will never be a USC, or Alabama, but a team like Boise St., is quite attainable. That is all I am looking for. The Warriors being in the Top 25, on a consistent basis. Then with a little luck once in awhile, challenge for the Top spot, which is what Boise St. is doing.
BOOM lakalakalaka BOOM lakalakalaka

Good day very cool website!! Man .. Excellent .. Wonderful .. I’ll bookmark your web site and take the feeds additionally?I am happy to seek out so many helpful information right here within the post, we want work out more techniques in this regard, thank you for sharing. . . . . .

407.408.409. go online rewrite what a woman wants. you got talent. think yu.
Lakalaka reminds me of Nate Illaoa as a freshman. Nate had not bulked up yet, but Nate never was tackled by the first man to hit him.
If you look at the recruits coming in, what Coach Chow basically did was replace the outgoing Seniors, position by position, with the new incoming recruits. He did not load up on anyone one or two position, that will probably come next year, for depth reasons. What is amazing is that he was able to bring in so many talented Freshman to be. Whereas, the past 2 HC’s basically went the JUCO route with their 1st recruiting class. I give Coach Chow alot of “balls” to recruit the way he did, going after more talented Freshmen.
we say nomoout. but you can send me da gold. an samoa recruits.

steve, you get right ideas. very good
bhf2, i can hear you chanting all the way across the channel. sounds pretty clear.
promise amadi… back to RB.
bhf2 – I was never down on Coach Chow. I always wanted him as UH’s HC, ever since he was the Offensive Coordinator at BYU. He knows how to coach all different kinds of QB’s, be it pure drop back, a left hander, or a scrambling type. In all cases, each type of QB has made it to the next level. With saying that, this Spring and Fall practice, will be very interesting watching the QB battle, as UH has all 3 types of QB’s.
When it comes to Lakalaka, I would not put the label on him being the next Nate Illaoa, just yet. Let him create his own path.
Whitey, I have my moments. ๐
21 signed Loi’s. 4 now for this class if they are available. If not greyshirting some. Still need to save one or two for bouncebacks.
To me, the one player who could benefit the most having Coach Chow, is Darius Bright. Think H-Back, put him on a LB, I do not think there is a LB that can keep up with him. The ball is in his court now, he needs to get serious. H-Back is his ticket to the next level.
al, if Turner and Fanaika do not decide soon, they may be left handing, if 2 out of these 3 visiting recruits decide to be Warriors. By your calculation, there is actually only 2 scholies left. Coach holding the last two, for after spring practice, I imagine.
Per Scout.com, Hawaii’s class of 16 players is ranked 103 out of 124 with three 3 star recruits & avg recruit rating of 2.19 (ranked 7th out of 10 in MWC).
In 2011, Mack’s recruiting class of 25 players was ranked 83 out of 120. with four 3 star recruits & avg recruit rating of 2.16 (ranked 2nd in WAC).
http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=14&view=1&yr=2011
#422 Al, where are you getting 21 LOIs? Tsai’s list has 19 and UH’s has 18.
al, according to the UHAD website, there are 18 names, who are the other 3 that are not listed?
Rainbowfan, according to the guy at scout.com, on the Animal Show, there are about 2 or 3 Warrior recruits that should have been rated higher, but were not seen in person. They just rated them, per video clip. One is Ursua, should have been rated a 4, the other is Dejon, and the 3rd maybe would be Lakalaka.
you guys can try fo make me calm down all you like. it ain’t happening.
i am THRILLED with our Coach chow. THRILLED.
the numbers rainbowfan stay tellin no take into account da transfer. the numbers also don’t take into account da IT factor, and Coach Chow.
last year we had all kinds of hope, promises of a great year. and look what we got? and we no can blame all dat on injuries.
da fact is there was a lack of DISCIPLINE. thats not happening now, and we all know it.
go Coach Chow!!!!
Go Warriors!!!!
eselu, faalologa, alo are on 2010 and 2011 lists.
Iโll right away snatch your rss as I can’t to find your e-mail subscription link or e-newsletter service. Do you have any? Kindly let me know in order that I may just subscribe. Thanks.
where everybody?
I think last year’s grey shirts count towards this years recruits. Not possitive though.
dont get hung up w the bean counters who average stars.
do ur reserch and look at the videos of our recruits…chow & co have great leads and personal networks goin– ill say it again, we have a good class. chow is sly and he aint revealing everything, otherwise his sources will be “tapped” by poachers.
another thing, mac n jj would list “no show” recruits to pump up their ratings, bad idea to compare. like chow said–the proof is in the puddin. uh made a coaching change for a reason.
point: the big guy from san mateo aint rated high but quality schools are after him. mr weis certainly wants him.
if ur a star gazer….good luck!
papajoe2, last year’s grey shirts count toward this years recruits. Which ST took into account, so why is al’s count higher then ST’s, or the UHAD website?
admrvt Coach Bud may not have received the signed NLI and therefore the names of the recruits aren’t announced.
The three Cali girls are on different West Coast teams, two on the 17’s and one on the 18’s.
Ursua looks more slippery to tackle than a greased pig in his highlite film, but a bit slower than reggie bush ?
Ralph, hope those 3 Cali girls are tall, and physical type girls. Cause Coach Nagamine needs those type of girls. That is what was missing from this past year’s team. Those tall, physical girls.
sorry guys…but 19 is correct. i forgot to omit jt turner and taliulu.
that’s what happens when you are told by the flt attendant to close your phone already (3 x).
at least two are for a bouncebacker and a transfer.

WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE!!!!!!!
Steikler is 5’4 and the other defender is 5’6, both from Cali. Not sure about McCaskill out of I’olani, I didn’t follow ILH soccer, hopefully she has speed, lots of it, and size.
al, still get chance for Turner and Hoko?
jt turner needs to take care of the academic end first. then the talking could lead to walking.
Ralph–
Here are the UH soccer recruits
Amanda Bates F Aliso Viejo, Calif. Aliso Niguel West Coast FC
Alex Gerrain MF San Clemente, Calif. San Clemente West Coast FC
Carly Mottram MF Mission Viejo, Calif. Mission Viejo West Coast FC
Rachel Steiker D Coto de Caza, Calif. Santa Margarita West Coast FC
Erica Young GK Laguna Niguel, Calif. Dana Hills San Diego Surf
My brother suggested I may like this blog. He was entirely right. This submit actually made my day. You cann’t imagine simply how much time I had spent for this info! Thanks!
SO….anyone know who’s the 3rd overtime visitor along with Jackson & Lewis this weekend?
Completely unrelated to football . . .
Anyone following the Mayweather/Pacquiao nonsense? Those two claim to be better than one another, say they want to fight one another, have a venue ready, and both have agreed to fights with other fighters (well Pacquiao still negotiating with his). These two, IMO, are the last hope to save boxing from becoming totally irrelevent. Without googling it, most people probable wouldn’t be able to name 10 current boxers. This is probably the only fight people want to watch, and could possibly draw some excitement back to the sport, but egos and wallets have gotten in the way.
This time, I hate to say it, it seems like Pacquiao is to blame. I think Mayweather ducked him before, but now Pacquiao seems to be the one ducking, or at least letting greed get the better of him. The UFC, say what you will, puts together fights that fans want all the time. They understand how to promote fights and are smart to control that aspect of their industry. Boxing on the other hand, the decisions are left to the fighters and managers, allowing big heads get in the way.
Sad.
thanks BG808, last year’s goalie recruit is no longer on the team. Young comes from one of the better So Cal premier teams- Surf.
Taylor Graham film from Ohio State…there’s three parts if anyone has that much time on their hands
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f18QjxDp_Sk
fanaika still sitting on the fence
#448 – kev, to be quite honest, pacman isn’t the problem. Its Arum, his promoter. He keeps giving excuses why this fight shouldn’nt happen. Anything from 50/50 split, to the proper venue that’ll bring the most revenue, pacman’s injury won’t heal in time, blah blah blah. Fight prob won’t happen unless pacman drops arum. So sad.
@392 – BHF2 Thanks for the reference!
when will fanaika make a decision?
Props to the UH athletic site and their clip on coach Chow’s interview and the lowdown of the recruits as well as the video hi-lights. That is great and quick work. Keep it up.
2 star, 3 star, 4 star, 5 star, who cares. I think the star system is overated. Ever wonder how a guy earns these stars? I think it has something to do with how many schools are bidding for a guy and, who is bidding for him. What a joke if that’s how it works. I remember that Terrelle Pryor not only was a 5 star guy but, he was labeled the best high school recruit in the country. A bunch of schools and so called experts blew that one! Mark Schlereth said he was about a .5 star recruit going to Idaho and look how good he turned out.
808Fringe . . . that is true. Guess it would have been better to say Pacquiao’s camp. I’m not sure how it works, but couldn’t Pacquiao override Arum? Mayweather made a personal offer to Pacquiao for a 50/50 split, but you’re right, it was Arum who said the venue was too small, hence the purse too small.
456 . . . stars fade and some even fall from the sky. And in Pryor’s case, free tattoos fade too.
I must say, as considerably as I enjoyed reading what you had to say, I couldnt help but lose interest after a while. Its as if you had a good grasp around the topic matter, but you forgot to include your readers. Perhaps you should think about this from much more than one angle. Or maybe you shouldnt generalise so a lot. Its better if you think about what others may have to say instead of just going for a gut reaction to the subject. Think about adjusting your own believed process and giving others who may read this the benefit of the doubt.wow gold
Maybe they should save one for Duke Bukoski who is planning to walk on… he’s already enrolled at UH, they say.
http://hshawaii.scout.com/a.z?s=370&p=8&c=1&nid=4804786
Graduated from St. Louis, was a 2-star WR recruit and I think he went to Idaho State last year…
#445 — BG808: Apparently Alex Gerrain changed her mind and signed with Idaho according to OC Varsity signing list.
mih…as discussed previously, one bounceback and one transfer.
the bouncebacker will be revealed later if/when it does happen.
the transfer sure sounds like jt turner. hopefully he’ll get his credits in and will accept our scholie.
if this sounds like deja vu, its about as close as we could get having had another jc cb by the name of turner, kenny that is commit only to find out he didn’t have enough credits and subsequently went back to the jc and reopened the recruiting upon attaining hisaa degree.
uh waited only to have another school come in and scoop him up.
on paper i counted 60 returning scholarship players. i did not count jordan monico nor siasau matagiese both of whom i am not sure whether they were afforded scholies last year.
Duke Bukowski was practicing with the team during the summer unsupervised. May have helped to make him comfortable coming back home to UH.
Night all!
GO WARRIORS!!!

Exhilirating da LOI news for UH.
listened to Coach Chow yesterday. http://www.facebook.com/HawaiiAthletics
he named and gave props to recruits Ron Fields, Ben Fonua, Steven Lakalaka, Mike Milovale.
he said if the player is not passionate and does not want to play for UH, he is turned off by the player.
I like dis coach. puts action to words. he’s bringing in samoa. good job, coach!
looking at the recruits…
14 freshmen outta high school (2 greshirts Williams and Woolsey)

Mike Milovale is now 318, 6’4′ for da oline. interesting to see da development plans for Dejon, Kiha, Gus, Leo, Ben Clark; where he going put Dejon?
Great Morning All!
IS IT SATURDAY YET?
“easy to recruit jerks”
“and then you just dig…you just dig”
“it’s not quite like that here”
“we hit the ground runnin'”
๐
Since we’re on the subject of recruiting class rankings and what not, I’m just curious how UH’s 2005 recruiting class was ranked at the time. I’m assuming they were in the #85-100 range. Didn’t they form the bulk of the ’06 and ’07 teams, widely regarded as the greatest teams in UH history?
I admit losing some of our top local talents left a bitter taste in my mouth but I’m confident NC is as good (if not better) a talent evaluator than JJ was. If he can develop these guys into legitimate D-1 players, I don’t see why we can’t return to level we were at 5 years ago.
