Signed, sealed, delivered

The Mountain West Conference yesterday approved an appeal enabling quarterback Beau Reilly to join the Rainbow Warriors.

In February, Reilly made a commitment to join the Warriors. The snag was that Reilly, who returned from a two-year church mission this past fall, initially signed with Colorado State in 2011. A player transferring between MWC schools needs league approval to receive a scholarship in his first year at the second school.

In the appeal, it was noted that UH was a member of the Western Athletic Conference, not the MWC, when Reilly signed with CSU. CSU coach Jim McElwain, who approved Reilly’s transfer request, also wrote a letter supporting Reilly’s appeal.

Peter Nicholson, UH’s faculty representative, presented Reilly’s case during a teleconference yesterday.

The MWC voted unanimously to approve Reilly’s appeal. He is eligible to compete with the Warriors when he enrolls at UH this summer.

Reilly then signed with the Warriors yesterday afternoon.

Reilly, who is from San Diego, will move to Hawaii in April. He will pay his own expenses until he goes on scholarship this summer.

  7. A-House March 12, 2014 8:15 am

OK, now can Chow send Reilly the “playbook” so he can study/learn and get up to speed by the time he reposts for classes in June?

I’m sure Reilly would appreciate such a gesture of faith and testament to his loyalty to UH.

  8. jeezy33 March 12, 2014 8:15 am

Not sure what the rules are but can Reilly practice in unsupervised work outs if he isn’t currently enrolled? Just to get his feet wet with some of the QBs and WRs…

  9. jeezy33 March 12, 2014 8:17 am

Assuming he would have a place to live here with family/or church ties..

  10. A-House March 12, 2014 8:19 am

    #8:

why not? does the NCAA control the “free time” of a student athlete who decides to run, lift weights, study playbooks, etc.

if the NCAA can slap Miami on the hand for major violations such as under the table $$$ and other benefits, will they “punish” if Reilly decides to conduct his own “off-season” workout?

howeva, knowing the NCAA, it would not be beneath them to do so!

  11. Stephen Tsai March 12, 2014 8:20 am

    Jeezy:
You are correct. I think he’s going to watch spring practice, which is open to the public, too.

  12. Stephen Tsai March 12, 2014 8:25 am

UH’s next goal should be to buy iPads for all the student-athletes to use.
Sorry, Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute, but we live in a paperless world. I think most “playbooks” are usually cutups that can be uploaded to an iPad or tablet. I think every coach and athlete from every sport could use one for scouting and self-assessments.

  13. Stephen Tsai March 12, 2014 8:39 am

There will be no neighbor-island trip for the team this year.

Question: How come Hawaiian does not have a direct flight between Honolulu and San Jose? UH volleyball had to take American this morning.

  15. leron March 12, 2014 8:51 am

Hawaiian does fly to San Jose, but one needs to take a flight to Kahului first to catch the direct flight from Maui

  16. bowwar March 12, 2014 8:53 am

ST: Any other potential QB transfers or recruits in the stream besides Wittek or Rivers?

  17. KapaaWarrior March 12, 2014 8:56 am

ST, get directs to SJC but it’s a very popular flight, gotta book way in advance.

Lotsa good candidates for QB… I can’t wait to watch Spring practice.

Maybe I’ll have a chance to watch Beau Riley watching the practices, get a pic of him perhaps. And Tsai could take a picture of me taking a picture of Beau as I watch him watching practices.

  30. SteveM March 12, 2014 10:12 am

    Good morning everyone!

Aloha and Welcome to Beau Reilly!

When JJ was asked why he recruited so many quarterbacks, didn’t he say that part of the reason is that the QB on a high school team is one of the most talented guys… and if he doesn’t play QB in college, there might be a another position for him.

  31. NorthShoreFan March 12, 2014 10:23 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day..

  35. Former UH Athlete March 12, 2014 11:02 am

Mr Reilly, welcome to the QB competition!

  36. Stephen Tsai March 12, 2014 11:09 am

Rivers contacted UH, but I don’t think UH is actively recruiting him at this time.
I think if they don’t get Wittek, they’ll just go into training camp with the QBs they have, although there are a couple of instant transfers out there. So, who knows?
It’s probably going to come down to Texas and Hawaii for Wittek. It’s also going to come down to where he thinks he has the best chance to play. On paper, if it’s just Texas and Hawaii, the edge has to go to Texas. But he’s already played at one of the premier schools for quarterbacks, so I think it will be an opportunity-based decision. If he’s confident he’ll start at Texas, well, hook ’em Horns. If not, then shaka.

  37. 99club March 12, 2014 11:14 am

    Welcome Beau!

It’s nice to read that Coach Jim McElwain wrote a letter in support of the transfer request and then to have a unanimous favorable decision by the MWC. Kudos to the Coach and Conference.

  38. A-House March 12, 2014 11:46 am

    99club:

maybe the MWC will consider deleting the travel expense UH must pay to fly teams over for football?

maybe the BWC will do the same?

  39. Andrew March 12, 2014 11:50 am

    38.

UH has no leverage to pull that off. The other schools wouldn’t agree to pay their own travel costs if UH is already paying for it. If they were playing like a Boise State of a few years ago and ranked, they could possibly renegotiate that and succeed if the MWC was worried UH would leave.

  40. A-House March 12, 2014 11:58 am

I had a dream! no, not the kind of MLK, but standing at a crap table – location unknown.

my “roll” lasted over 6 hours – had $3,000 on the 4, 5, 9, and 10; had $4,000+ on the 6 and 8; $3,000 on the field; $1,000 on each “hard ways”; and occasionally put $500 on the
the snake eyes and tracks – wow, that’s $27,000 on every roll.

then, on a hunch (intuition) pulled down my bets and kept $128 across – 2 rolls later I craped out

one thing for sure, it was not downtown Vegas – their limit is $200 on the hard ways

OK, I need to have Hawaii part of the nation’s powerball and be the sole winner!

  41. A-House March 12, 2014 12:06 pm

    39:

not looking for “leverage” – just wondering if their religion or consciousness made them softer – neva hoppen!!!!!!!!

did BJ ever release his visions and plans ( short, mid and long range )?

guess not, cause most ADs leave after 7-10 years – like the senior coaches, they are older and get tired faster – besides, all that rich food and liquor works against them

  42. Shoko March 12, 2014 12:15 pm

Guess it was a pretty easy decision for McElwain to release Reilley since he wasn’t the one who recruited him.

  43. jeezy33 March 12, 2014 12:23 pm

    42. Chow didn’t recruit Mike Wadsworth either and didn’t let him sign with BYU. Circumstances might be different but McElwain could have made it tougher…. So I appreciate him signing off..

  46. Lowtone123 March 12, 2014 1:02 pm

#36-ST, Isn’t David Ash the starting QB at Texas providing he’s healthy? He suffered multiple concussions but vowed to return. I think that would make UH the favorite if chance to play was the major consideration. In the end, he’ll probably pick Texas. After all, how can UH compete with Texas?

  47. ai-eee-soos March 12, 2014 1:26 pm

mebbe Wittek, if he has time & $, could come over and watch spring practice.

mebbe that can help him make a decision.

  48. A-House March 12, 2014 1:27 pm

    DPK:

welcome or should I say may I join your playing craps fantasy world!

wonder how much I would have won and how much I would donate to UH athletics?

I am more inclined to donate to the “non-revenue” sports than football or baseball or Na Wahine VB or Kane BB – they seem to be holding most or nearly all of their own

  49. bowwar March 12, 2014 1:30 pm

  55. Rodney March 12, 2014 3:28 pm

    Wittek,Ohhhh come to Hawaii!!!!!!!!!!

  56. Derek March 12, 2014 3:44 pm

Maybe he’s a good quarterback, but I’m not high on Wittek. Number 1, he’s not a real mobile guy, he’s a drop back guy like Graham. Number 2, from what I saw him play, he’s not real accurate with his throws. I could be wrong, but the most important trait in a QB is accuracy. I don’t have the stats on him, but you can easily look it up in the USC website.

  57. Derek March 12, 2014 3:53 pm

OK my curiosity got the best of me. Wittek’s stats.
    2012 52.2% completion, 3 touchdowns, 5 interceptions*
    2013 53.8% completion, 0 touchdowns, 1 interception**

*started after Matt Barkey got hurt, and includes bowl game against Georgia Tech.
**part-time starter before he lost his job to Cody Kessler.

That’s not going to do it. To be a decent/good QB you have to complete at least 60% of the passes to have our team have a chance to compete to win some games. There are other things such as yards per attempt, TDs vs INTs, 3rd down conversions, etc. but accuracy is #1.

  58. Shoko March 12, 2014 4:23 pm

    Graham 46% 2TDs and 5INT
    Woolsey 37.9% 0TDs and 3INT
    Higgins 45.5% 0TDs and 0INT
    Iosefa 100% 1TD and 0INT

If worse come to worse, we could always put Joey behind center and run triple option.

  59. Shoko March 12, 2014 4:25 pm

Anyway, prayers to those that lost love ones in that Malaysian Airline tragedy. Already going on the sixth day and still no where to be found.

  60. Lowtone123 March 12, 2014 4:30 pm

#51-Mustafaa landed in Miami but while sitting out this season per NCAA rules, apparently has left the program. No news on where is will be next.

  61. Shoko March 12, 2014 4:33 pm

Sounds like Mustafaa, at the moment, is off the radar. Might pop up somewhere in the future. Never know.

  62. Drew March 12, 2014 4:45 pm

We need to stop recruiting QB’s off of the benches of other teams. Those aren’t impressive numbers put up by Wittek. Sure it was against PAC-12 competition, but he had PAC-12 caliber receivers to throw to and a PAC-12 offensive line protecting him. He will go up against lesser competition in the MWC, but he will also have less talent around him to work with and an abysmal OL. Schroeder had to undergo back surgery after his first year and Taylor Graham didn’t even make it past week 3. Our QB protection needs to be improved. It’s not encouraging that we have more QB recruits than OL recruits. But then again, I guess we do need 5 plus QB’s on the roster since our QB whoever it is will be getting pounded with the current quality of our OL and limited future OL prospects in this years recruiting class.

  63. ALLAN YOUNG March 12, 2014 5:10 pm

RILEY AND RIVERS LOOK INTRIGUING, BUT WITTEK IS JUST WINDOW-SHOPPING; I THINK I SAID THAT B4, SOMEWHERE.

  64. WWF March 12, 2014 5:18 pm

    62. Or we could try Ewaliko at QB instead of safety. I would rather see our QB running down the field instead of the opposing team’s QB, which has happened many times to us the past two seasons.

If not, why didn’t HNN work with Hawaiian Telecom, who trying to compete with Oceanic in providing cable TV service, to come up with a comprehensive package?

  70. Rodney March 12, 2014 6:23 pm

He probably worth 3 or more wins plus
a couple wins for special teams and maybe
3 or more wins from Defense and that adds up
to a bowl game in Dec!!!! Just a thought!!!

  79. whitey March 12, 2014 8:42 pm

warrior dave, i can just imagine what your group looked like when he left. sometimes the weirdest things happens when you get one shooter. was on table wen shooter was hot and all kind numbers was coming up plus making the pass. then either hear commotion or look up and no mo shooter. game no pau, but next guy rolling. find out shooter was playing no pass. this happen to me 3 different times. lucky for me, all the next shooters were pretty guud.

  80. whitey March 12, 2014 8:48 pm

another weird moment in craps. put 5 dollars on yo and tell stick to parley before shooter rolls. shooter rolls 2 yo in a row and you walk away with over 1200 dollars. awesome!!!!!

  81. whitey March 12, 2014 8:59 pm

only on the strip casinos, playing craps, waitress approaches from your back and says “cocktails”. you turn around and eyeballs fall out of socket, forget what you was goin order, she leaves, you turn back to the game and forget what you doing.

Second, I did the same $5 yo and Stickman said to parley. I said no and threw another $5. Shooter threw the yo! No guys no glory. You my friend have guts!!!

  85. WarriorMojo March 12, 2014 10:47 pm

Sorry, gonna have to vent. Blangiardi should just shut up. And Slom and Espero should quit the political grandstanding.

Oceanic had an exclusive rights negotiation window. Nothing wrong with that. KFive had the exact same clause in its contracts when it had UH rights for all those years.

The exclusive rights window is DESIGNED to give the existing contract holder the first and best shot at extending the contract. That is its PURPOSE. All this crap Blangiardi is spewing to suggest something improper occurred is pure BS. And he KNOWS it because he benefited from that EXACT clause in the past.

If KFive wanted to retain the rights it had all along, then it shouldn’t have let Oceanic outbid it in the first place. Who was showing the money then?

Also, notice Blangiardi is saying that KFive would have offered “as much or more” than Oceanic? Well, which is it, Rick, “as much” or “more”? At this point you know what Oceanic’s bid is. Quit being mealy mouth. Would your offer have been “as much” or “more” than Oceanic’s?

As far as KFive having “state of the art” production? Oceanic was first with HD and digital access and KFive will be equal at best, not better. Of course the only reason KFive is even there is because Oceanic forced them to keep up.

If the new Oceanic contract has been signed, Blangiardi’s propganda may constitute tortious interference with a contract. If Blangiradi really thinks something is wrong and that the process was flawed/fraudulent, then he should sue. But he won’t because he has no chance in hell.

So instead he plays dirty with the innuendo and calls in some political favors from Slom and Espero to parrot his nonsense. Its totally disgusting.

And who suffers from this crap? UH athletics. Blangiardi pretends that he is trying to help UH, but that is pure BS. It’s not about UH. It’s about money. That’s all he cares about.

ithere broadcasts certainly will not be worse than g nedis ju> purpos

  86. Warrior Dave March 12, 2014 11:00 pm

    Warrior Mojo,

THANK YOU!!!! I too am sick and tired of RB. Just because he has a forum he keeps flapping his gums. Nothing more to add to your well written post.

  87. leron March 13, 2014 12:04 am

Rick was on the radio stating his case. Never once did he say PPV would be gone and home games aired LIVE. That would be a death sentence for the gate. Before PPV, games were aired delayed starting at 10:30 and even that was stopped. Away games live and free sounds like the one thing Rick had over Oceanic. Kinda Manini. Would like to see if everything was done on the up and up though. That said, it felt really dirty listening to all of his confusing jargon and sales speak, likea car salesman trying to sell me a car.

  88. Truman March 13, 2014 1:13 am

Who knows if Mike Buck and Rick are friends and planned this radio spot to further Rick’s cause. I used to like Rick and his commentary but maybe his true colors are showing (we’ll see). Mike Buck has a great radio voice and personality but from what I know of him is not the most positive so with that in mind, I am skeptical of this Blangiardi claim.

  89. boolakanaka March 13, 2014 5:32 am

I got to side with Mojo on this, not as an attack on RB, but rather to the fact, that these are publicy traded companies. Thus, the priority is always slanted towards the bottom-line and shareholders. In as much as they can be good neighbors–which is always a value added, but their primary responsibility if a fiduciary obligation to the share-holder.
