Mack: “There will be some changes”

UH took the first step in the reassignment of some coaching duties when it posted this ad yesterday:

http://www.pers.hawaii.edu/wuh/nadvert.aspx?rn=9659&si=379488&pn=1&sn=postdate&so=desc

Head coach Greg McMackin said this morning “there will be some changes.” But he refused to reveal the details.

Our people tell us that no current coach is expected to leave the football organization, which includes but is not limited to the coaching staff.

But Coach Mack refused to comment on any scenario, and said he will make an announcement in mid-March.

    Great Morning All!

    Interesting news this morning…

  4. Garret February 17, 2010 5:41 am

    Ferd’s article today stated that:

The Southeastern Conference reaps a reported average of $102 million a year just from its television contracts, inspiring envy β€” and action.

So, the Big Ten, which has its own sports channel, says it will look into further expansion, pronto, lest it lose ground and moolah.

This isn’t quite seeing the big picture because the Big 10 Network apparently made $242 million last year for the Big 10. So, the Big 10 *already* makes more than the SEC for TV revenue, and they only need to divide the TV money by 11, not 12 like the SEC.

However, the Big 10 is looking at expansion because they want to make *more*…not because they want to catch up to the SEC.

  5. Garret February 17, 2010 5:43 am

Ferd’s article also shortchanged the SEC–their contracts give them $3.075 billion over 15 years, which comes out to $205 million per year…so, Ferd needed to double the SEC’s TV numbers. The Big 10 still makes more per team, though.

  6. d1ε³Ά February 17, 2010 5:54 am

Aren’t postings like this oftentimes a “formality” for a pre-selected candidate?

  7. Stephen Tsai February 17, 2010 5:54 am

If I’m the WAC, I’d try to gather a bunch of eggheads and figure out the next big technology.
Looking ahead, you have to figure Sony or Vizio will get into the phone business, right? And eventually β€” like how computers and smart phones are replacing actual newspapers β€” sporting events are going to be available widely through your phones or whatever technology we’ll be using in five years.
so wouldn’t it make sense for the WAC to ink a futures deal with, say, Verizon or Sony or whoever, with the test-market idea that a person can watch live college games on his phone?

  8. Bigislandkurt February 17, 2010 5:56 am

It seems the Big Ten is positioning itself in a technology β€” television β€” that may or not be the preferred communication device in the next five years.

    Good morning Stephen,
Taken from my last couple of post, could you shed some light on the status of the following guys not on the SuperGames Rosters:

Josh Andrews, Brian Blumberg, Rodney Bradley, Kaiser Iuta, Levi Legay, Malcolm Lane, Brett Leonard, Gary Nagy, Corey Paclebar, Aaron Rink, Bronson Tiwanak, Tui Tuiasosopo

How is Bradley, Paclebar and Tuiasosopo’s Rehab?
    Is Brett hurt?

    Good morning!

Happy Ash Wednesday and Hump Day. 2 more days till the weekend.

  15. jm2375 February 17, 2010 6:10 am

Looks like the next big thing may be 3D TV.

  16. Stephen Tsai February 17, 2010 6:11 am

Bradley, Paclebar, Tuiasosopo and Legay are recovering from injuries.
Andrews left the team prior to the 2009 season.
I think Blumberg is exploring the possibility of transferring if he is not needed next year.
Coach Miano had said Nagy is not on the team, although I’m not sure why.
I think Brett Leonard was an omission on my part. He was part of Super Games last week.
Not sure on the status of Tiwanak and Rink. I’ll check today. I’m pretty sure Tiwanak is OK.

  17. jm2375 February 17, 2010 6:12 am

Actually, Leigh Steinberg and June Jones said in 1999 that the next big thing would be to watch games on phones, and this was before the introduction of the iPhone, I think.

  20. Paka February 17, 2010 6:17 am

    ST re:#7
Its hard to tell what technological device will catch on with sports. A few years back a friend, JJ, and I started a tech company focusing on the professional and intercollegiate sports market. We came up with some unbelievable stuff, but the timing wasn’t right. Today almost everyone is using the ideas we came up with. The NFL still uses our exact model for their instant replay system.

  23. addahknowjoe February 17, 2010 6:28 am

Perhaps the WAC should line themselves up with Google. Whatever device any game will be watched on or even however the internet is to be accessed, Google wants to offer the base platform all content gets delivered. They have plans to push for our entire nations network to be upgraded to Fiber Optics.

But, Google wants to test out there new system. Hawaii would be the perfect place to start this initiative.

    (small kine bias)

  24. addahknowjoe February 17, 2010 6:29 am

Paka- you worked with Nalu technologies?

  25. Paka February 17, 2010 6:33 am

    addahknowjoe,
I was. The company was built when JJ and I came up with ideas we would like to have, and Rich got his tech friends together to figure out how to put those ideas into reality.

  26. rage777 February 17, 2010 6:43 am

Watched the replay last night, Davone Bess is such a nice, genuine guy. ST showed why he is such a great reporter, his timing. My question was just about to be asked and he goes and talks about it.

What happened to all the old replays of the shows. It shows stuff from way back (Aug 09), but nothing from recent shows.

Right now I just want to see UH in real HDTV so perhaps a deal with Verizon FIOS, although I believe AT&T is bigger in the west. But Steven is right, it’s a three screen world: TV, PC, and Mobile.

Not good press for McMackin but a bit unfair. Hopefully this will be his year with lots of skill coming back.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/346784-ten-struggling-college-football-programs-and-coaches-who-derailed-them

Sure, Hawaii isn’t a major football powerhouse, but they have become known for prolific offenses. That is, until McMackin took over for the departed June Jones. Last season, Hawaii ranked 89th in scoring offense. That’s hardly paradise, kids.

    Paka-

While at 4Charity, Rich and his friends from the bay area had a cheaper alternative to Sportvisions, 1st & 10 yellow line. But even better, they had an idea to revolutionize game film video editing. Stacey convinced Rich to pursue his idea and get his friends to come to Hawaii. They made a prototype software demo using the the UH/BYU game. They then went to JJ to propose the idea.

The basic premise was for the WAC to adopt the technology and have teams exchange game films using their technology.

Other conferences were lining themselves up with other technologies.

So impressed with the technology, Dr. Miyakawa wanted it immediately implemented with the Cincinnati Bengals in hopes of one day having the NFL adopt it.

You’re right. Allot of the ideas that came out of Nalu Technologies are now being offered. Back then I remember seeing their tracking software that could follow every player and keep their every stats. Kurisu had dreams of using it with his SF Giants. Today, Sportvision is now offering a similar software some 9 years after it was first done by NT.

They even had a killer app that would digitally remove players from game film and single out only players you’d want to see. They got that too now.

    Shucks!

    Too bad they folded.

  33. oldie February 17, 2010 7:14 am

My son worked on a project that allows you to view Pittsburgh Penguin games live on your smart phone while in the Mellon Arena. You can choose the camera angles you want and do instant replays.

Biggest problem is the amount of bandwidth and servers needed to allow the viewing. With advances in hardware it’s something that could take off in all sports in a few years.

    ST,

The technology *already* exists for watching live sporting events on phones. Qualcomm (who make the chips that power a large portion of cell phones in the US) developed FLO TV and it has been commercially available for awhile already.

This year, FLO TV owners will be able to watch 3000+ hours of sports programming and 1,200+ live sporting events over the course of the year. These include over 90 NBA games, 76 MLB games, almost 200 NCAA football games (including 25 Bowl games), 350 NCAA basketball games (including Final Four and Championship games), and 11 NHL games (including 13 playoff games and the Stanley Cup Final). Oh, and there will also be four tennis majors.

  45. Pomai February 17, 2010 8:50 am

#43 Now why doesn’t that surprise me

  46. Garret February 17, 2010 8:50 am

The TV-watching capabilities of FLO TV are getting to be so advanced that they are ready to release a TiVo-like DVR service for their devices!

  47. Garret February 17, 2010 8:52 am

Sling Media created their client service that allows for people to watch anything on their TV on their cell phone. The service itself is free once you pay the $50 or so for the application for your cell phone. So, people can watch anything on TV on their cell phone for under $200 (counting the cost of the Slingbox) with no monthly service charge except for the data plan they already pay for on their phone.

  48. Colomaohana February 17, 2010 8:55 am

    Kekoa: I don’t think anyone would want to be on Pride’s bad side…. I know I don’t. hehe…

  49. Garret February 17, 2010 8:56 am

TV is where the money is now, and where it will be for sports in the foreseeable future. TV ads pay so much more than online ads or ads on phones. 3-D sports on big-screen TVs will keep that going…it will be hard for a small screen phone to compete with that experience.

  50. Colomaohana February 17, 2010 9:03 am

  53. A-House February 17, 2010 9:07 am

    Paka:

Kept forgetting to post, but, did you play little league ball for the Kailua Braves coached by Coach Mike and Derik? If yes, do you remember the first baseman on your team – the kinda big Japanese boy who batted clean-up.

Were you a running back for Kamehameha?

  54. A-House February 17, 2010 9:08 am

Will the new UH football hire be a “wide receiver” coach? They could use one!

  55. d1ε³Ά February 17, 2010 9:13 am

    Garret,

On how “big” a screen can 3D be used? Could 3D replays be done in the new Cowboy’s stadium? That would be interesting for future Coaches’ challenges.

  56. Garret February 17, 2010 9:21 am

    Howzit Big C!

  57. addahknowjoe February 17, 2010 9:24 am

My friend set up his Sling Box to send live K5 signals of the game to his laptop at Aloha Stadium. He said the WiFi was choppy at best but it worked.

  58. Garret February 17, 2010 9:25 am

    d1shima,

They would have to complete change what is used for the big screens at the stadium…and the technology is really new and expensive right now so that is too expensive even for the Cowboy’s stadium. But the early adopters will buy it for their homes (especially since ESPN will be broadcasting games in 3D HDTV) and the price will come down.

I’m really interested in the technology they were showing off at CES that allowed people to view TV in 3D *without* needing to put on 3D glasses. I don’t know how that works and I’m sure the companies that invented it are keeping it a secret…but if 3D HDTV could be viewed like holograms and not need special glasses to be seen, that would really be awesome technology.

  59. Garret February 17, 2010 9:29 am

    addaknowjoe,

The LTE (4G) network that Verizon is releasing commercially this year has actually been verified to reach download speeds of 480 Mbps…much, much faster than WiFi and any 3G speeds available now. LTE is already available in some places in Europe and I’m looking forward to seeing what types of applications people use that for in the US.

  60. Manoa February 17, 2010 9:29 am

    Stephen

The way the contracts are typically written, all of the broadcast or internet media rights are assigned or dealt with in the contract, no matter what the technology. The conference can reserve rights– like reserving live internet streaming, or delayed broadcasts (or the contract can include the broadcaster providing these things to the conference or school).

Therefore, with the smart guys putting deals together, the deals already price in any media besides TV plus any resale of rights to some other medium. It is then in the hands of media and tech companies to buy and sell these rights for things like phones, ipads, tablets. The prospect of buying and selling these rights is what provides some incentive for the development of the technology.

What UH and conferences can do is reserve the right to sell rights to new technology companies, but that will also mean that if there is any value to such rights (if there are propects for making money from new media) and the broadcaster is not getting them, they are likely to cut the payments to the conference or school to take into account the value and anyt risk of losing customers to new media.

  61. Colomaohana February 17, 2010 9:31 am

    A-joe!

  62. d1ε³Ά February 17, 2010 9:31 am

    Garret,

    Thanks.

btw, how is the “buzz” going over there for the new Trojan coach? I bet the media is missing the former guy…

  63. Garret February 17, 2010 9:35 am

The SEC already created an online SEC network where fans can watch all the games (even games that have already finished), interviews, etc. It would be good if the WAC could do that.

Maybe UH could work with Oceanic (remember, Oceanic owns the streaming rights as part of their deal with UH) to create an online presence for more than just football games–interviews, other sports, etc.–that could be marketed on the mainland AND in places like Samoa and Australia. Even if it doesn’t make any money, it would be a *huge* recruiting tool.

  64. GRM February 17, 2010 9:36 am

    ST,
Missed the show yesterday. Is there any way/link I can look at the replay?

  65. Garret February 17, 2010 9:39 am

    d1shima,

I don’t read the articles on USC and change the channel when a radio station here discusses USC/UCLA sports (luckily I have 6 sports radio stations to choose from since all of the LA stations can be heard here!), so I cannot answer your question. However, I’m sure that USC talk will dominate the San Diego sports stations once again this fall since they barely mention SDSU or other teams.

Back to work…got to finish a 12-page paper today and I just finished getting the computer simulation results today.

  66. al February 17, 2010 9:40 am

this asst coach position….is it a new position recently created?
or did someone tender a resignation that has not yet gone public or was someone’s contract not renewed?

  67. Justin February 17, 2010 9:41 am

I’d like to see Rolo take over the Offensive coordinator duties with Ron Lee going back to his natural position, WR coach. Also, I hope that Tormey or Shaw receive promotions to assistant/associate head coach titles. Both are overqualified for their current positions.

  73. Derek February 17, 2010 10:05 am

What about Rocky and Brashton? They are not on the Super Games list.
Is it because of injuries or because they still have to get cleared on their medical redshirt year? I see Laupepa on the list so does that mean he’s cleared and all healed up? Just asking.

UH basketball. If there’s any indication as to whether the UH coaching staff is doing a good job or not, take a look at the recruits that they brought in. Jespersen, Fitzgerald, Lasha, Kareem, Jiang, Kurtz, Williams, Campbell and you can a name a couple more as my memory
escapes. Some are not Division I players, and a couple are border line Division I players, and Williams has had all kinds of issues since he’s been here. You could say that most of these players are a “reach”.
It is not surprising to see how the team is playing. We just don’t have the talent enough to compete at a high level and that does back to the coaching and the recruiting efforts. If you don’t get players, I best coach
can’t win…period. Some new players are sitting out the year and there is one recruit, Coleman coming in. I don’t know. Johnson came from Arizona, so why did he come here. If he was good, wouldn’t he be getting a lot of playing time there? Arizona is not very good now. We have to look to the future and ask if the basketball program is getting better. To me, for the last 3 years the answer is no. Look at the attendance the last 3 years and that’s all you need to find the answers.
Yeah, the economy ain’t great, but if the product is good people would still come.

gordie shaw has been for the most part a dline/oline coach. he had brief stints as an oc at south dakota a year before he came here and at northern colorado. dc at idaho also for a year. i am sure if shaw became the oc it would be the end of the run n shoot as we know it as he is run oriented coach.

Gee, all this talk about phones showing tv. I’m lucky if my calls go through and stay connected.

We have the following baseball, men’s & women’s basketball, and volleyball tickets fo’free.

5 pm, Saturday, February 20 – one woman’s basketball ticket – open seating and includes the men’s game at 8 pm – may need to move for second game. Tsai-kos sit in several different areas for these games. You should be able to move to where they’re sitting for the second game. Protector is taking one of the two tickets.

Thursday, February 25 – two men’s basketball tickets – center court upper level.Tsai-kos sit in several different areas for these games. You should be able to move to where they’re sitting. Protector is taking the extra baseball ticket for that same night

Friday, February 26 – two baseball tickets – upper level third base side. In previous years, Tsai-los sat in lower level third base side I don’t know where they’re sitting this year, but I’m sure you can move.

If you would like to have any of these tickets, please send me an e-mail to swood at hoku dot com .Be sure to include your real name and a daytime or cell telephone number plus which sporting event you’d like to attend.

Re-Coach Mack hiring a new assistant coach

First I have to hand it to him for building a better mousetrap.

It follows the pattern where the coach is always looking at ways in getting better. He did it the first year with OL and ST changes.

He began this year with the change of SC.

    And now this move. Great.

When I look at what needs fixing, I think moving RL back to WR coach and bringing in a new OC would be a smart move.

Anything less I don’t think is.

If the coach is thinking of killing two mice at one time bringing in a new OC would. One it would it would be a cure all to UH’s offensive game, especially in the areas of red zone offense and in being consistent. Two upgrading the offense, and tweaking it up a notch in making more exciting, may fill more seats.

If Mouse Davis came out of retirement, which I hope does, a move like this with MD going to OC and RL solidifying the WR area (where it needs more attention) would be a move that would make sense to me.

If no one here wants them, we’ll try to give them away at the box office before the game.

  100. al February 17, 2010 11:45 am

but, what we really need is more help on the offensive side of the ball.

  101. al February 17, 2010 11:52 am

adam leonard comes in as a student asst.
does he help cal with linebackers?

and if tony jumps in, then we have three dline coaches.

    two db coaches.
and hc who directs the defense.

    on offense aside from ron.
    there’s rolo w/qb’s
    inoke ga to help rolo.
    brian smith’s got rbs.
    gordie has oline.

  102. kyle February 17, 2010 11:57 am

With all the recent turmoil in St. Louis athletics, could Cal Lee be headed back?

  103. al February 17, 2010 11:59 am

    nah

  104. al February 17, 2010 12:09 pm

    what a difference a day makes…
a couple of weeks ago we were seemingly overloaded at wr.
today, or rather as of a last week’s announcements we are looking at a totally different depth chart.

what with the suspension of malcom lane and the refusal by the ncaa to allow jovonte taylor another year, why, all of a sudden it is one of thin spots.

hopefully, hot rod bradley is fully recovered. then the competition is between pollard, avery, and redshirt freshman stutz2.

  105. al February 17, 2010 12:12 pm

if i were a new recruit like darius bright i’d be making sure my academics are up to snuff. then, study that playbook like it is finals every day and watch game film of what we do and how we do it for hours on the day.

    Garret #58 –

Have you seen this demo of 3D on a Wii? The 3D work for only a single viewer but does not require glasses.

I was hoping that the announced iPad would have a forward facing camera so that software could detect the position of the viewer’s eyes so nothing would have to be worn.

  108. lava February 17, 2010 12:27 pm

I think you give Rolo control of the offense. Lee was ineffective, I hate to say, so let Rolo call the shots, the rest play a support role.

Rolo will be gone if not given his due.

  109. BigIslandkurt February 17, 2010 12:35 pm

I love Jeff Law. Good guy who has done some good things with the vulcans. I just see Manoa going after some nationally known, higher profile coach from the D1 ranks. They already used the “feel good, hire from home” card on Nash.

    BIK

  110. BigIslandkurt February 17, 2010 12:37 pm

Tony Tuioti had always wanted to coach. If he is named coach, it doesn’t stop him from still recruiting Vegas and Cali. That would then open up the recruiting coordinator position. Can anybody say do-risssss??? Ok, let me stop before I get accused of rumor mongering.

  116. A-House February 17, 2010 1:09 pm

OK, ST – we are getting excited as Craig has always been a family favoriate and meeting him at the tailgates 3 years ago and at other functions more recently, has naturally drawn us close to Billy Ray.

We have no problems if he beats out any upper classman cause this shows his talents!

  117. al February 17, 2010 1:09 pm

i like doris where she is now. she does more for the youth of hawaii with what she does now.

tony’s position currently, is one where it is far reaching in that he needs to develop contacts with high school coaches here and abroad. it is a position that also requires hands on knowledge of the game as well.

player personnel positions have become so crucial in today’s game. why it took us so long to realize this is beyond amazement (er, frazier). boise state for example has a director and an asst director of player personnel.

don’t get me wrong. i love what doris is doing and she does it well. she does it more out of the kindness of her heart.

  118. A-House February 17, 2010 1:11 pm

if and when a new basketball coach job vacancy is announced.

i’d like to first see a real qualified selection board.
i would think that the qualifications should be in significant order.

    proven ability to recruit.
some understanding of what it takes to succeed in hawaii
    track record of success
    west/west coast affiliation
ability to manage a d1 basketball program
ability to recruit a quality staff

  123. Paka February 17, 2010 2:03 pm

    addahknowjoe,
yeah, Stacy was the first person to approach me. She asked if I thought we could do something together. We eventually headed in another direction shortly thereafter and JJ and I started adding our ideas to the mix. What was crazy was that it was used successfully in the NFL. We not only used our technology at UH but we worked with the Denver Broncos for 2 years and it really was a success. Shanahan loved it. We were way ahead of our time back then. It’s kind of neat that 5-6 years later everyone is doing what we thought of back then. One of our techs ended up working for the NFL and so that is why our technology is still being used by them. Another thing most people don’t know is that NASCAR also currently uses what we came up with. Mr. Kurisu did have an interest in using it with the Giants but we were never able to finalize anything. I think we went in too many directions, too fast.

  124. Jack Flash February 17, 2010 2:17 pm

    Paka-
Are you guys getting any residual income from any of these ideas? Fascinating stuff!

  125. wafan February 17, 2010 2:31 pm

    Hi!

Freezing last night and a nice mid-50’s today. Great football weather!!!

  126. Paka February 17, 2010 2:42 pm

    A-house,
That wasn’t me playing baseball. The coaches names sounds familiar, but my brother was more the baseball player. I played football and boxed.

  127. Paka February 17, 2010 2:47 pm

    Jack Flash,
Not really. It would have been great to make tons of money, but at the time(at least as far as JJ and I was concerned) we weren’t too focused on that. We were kind of looking at it as how it would help us have an edge and win at UH. That’s why I find it so funny at all the things we came up with back then. We were thinking out of the box on how to get an edge, and we succeeded. It was fun times.

  128. Jack Flash February 17, 2010 2:54 pm

Apparently, JJ was not the only visionary in Manoa…

  129. LizKauai m/ February 17, 2010 2:59 pm

Paka- being the idealist, I love out-of the box thinking… but often the walls cave in for various reasons – sometimes lack of vision or control issues with other vital stakeholders.

    Dang, I miss Coach Jones.

  130. Paka February 17, 2010 3:02 pm

    Liz,
The one thing I believe to be true in my life is that hope is having the same enthusiasm even after you fail. Keep believing, if the walls cave in, find a way to make use of the rubble.

  131. wafan February 17, 2010 3:09 pm

    Paka . . .

Absolutely!!! I always ask my kids after they try something new, “What did you learn?” “Under the circumstances, did you give it your best shot?”

Their eventual growth into outstanding adults is the ultimate goal!

  132. Garret February 17, 2010 3:14 pm

    addahknowjoe,

I am very familiar with the technology (IEEE 801.16e, or mobile WiMAX) behind Clearwire’s service because I was actually working on that technology before Clearwire existed and I worked on technology of interest to several of the biggest companies in that area today. I have friends that were the lead people at their companies who helped write that standard and I demonstrated a prototype for 16e four years ago. I hope that Clearwire succeeds because I have several friends whose jobs depend on it…

To me, Clearwire’s service is more like 3.5G than 4G. WiFi can actually achieve faster speeds than Clearwire’s top speed, but WiFi has a limited range.

LTE will start off more than twice as fast as WiMAX and should get upgraded faster because it is what all cellular carriers are moving to around the world (aside from Sprint). There is a big question of whether or not anybody actually needs that speed though…price will probably be the critical issue and Clearwire has a chance to win there. Verizon and AT&T use different technologies now, but they both are upgrading to LTE, so it will eventually be the single standard that everybody (aside from Sprint) will support.

  133. Garret February 17, 2010 3:14 pm

    oldie,

    I hadn’t even heard of 3D Wii stuff…interesting.

  134. Garret February 17, 2010 3:16 pm

The first thing that came to mind when ST mentioned that their would be a shuffling of responsibilities but nobody would be leaving UH is the possibility of Tony Tuioti becoming an assistant coach and one of the current coaches taking his job. A couple of people have already posted about that so I figure it is okay for me to post that too. However, it would seem that UH would be adding another defensive coach when there is already an offensive/defensive imbalance, so the coach being reassigned would have to be currently on the defensive side.

  135. Garret February 17, 2010 3:19 pm

One thing I haven’t seen posted here yet is that due to the Big 12 policy on leaving the conference and the timing of the Pac-10 TV contract, the Pac-10 will need to decide on their expansion by THIS SUMMER. That means that last season will be the last football season before the expansion decision and this basketball season will be the last one before the conference shuffle begins.

Colorado’s Athletic Director Mike Bohn pointed out that any team from the Big 12 that decides to leave for the Pac-10 will have to inform the Big 12 this summer. It is no coincidence that he’s checked the rules about that…

Bohn said because the Big 12 requires a two-year notice to leave and the Pac-10 is about to begin negotiations for a new television contract that would begin in two years for the 2012 football season, he believes any movement on expansion or conference realignments will come this summer.

  136. wafan February 17, 2010 3:39 pm

It’s a down economy, but it’s down through out the U.S., our teams got to win and play at a higher level to put butts in the seats, then the revenue goes up reducing the deficit. Mbb making 100k+ last season, laughable, mbb and fb are the foundation around which all athletic programs are built. Mbb got to do better.

Got to invite him to our next Tsaiko karaoke and get him to relax, listen to ST rendition of the Lion sleeps tonight, or his low, low dance move with lefty rapping.

    These most likely scenerios:

#1. Ron Lee moves back to receivers coach and Coach Mack hires a new offensive coordinator.

#2. Ron Lee moves to receivers coach, Coach Mack hires a new OC and Cal Lee and Chris Tormey switch responsibilities.

The most likely scenario is #1 because of the inconsistencies on offense last year. Also the receiver coach position is still open. Mack needs an OC that he does not have to micromanage… someone who can direct not only the players but also the other coaches as far as scheme and game planning. A well proven offensive coordinator will be a big shot in the arm for Hawaii next year. Just my two cents.

    re # 164.

    Mack cannot hire another coach, UNLESS he releases one first;

there is a maximum number of coaching positions allowed.

  171. SDE February 17, 2010 7:20 pm

I read that Aranda to be DC, Cal Lee back to LB coach, Tony T to DL coach, Lumpkin to recruiting coord

  172. ai-eee-soos February 17, 2010 7:30 pm

    # 171 sounds more like it.

but CL maintains his title and pay.

the new DC will have the title of assistant football coach, and will be in his own salary range.

only problem is what pay range Lumpkin will be in – no can “demote” him.

chee – such intrigue, but good fun yah, speculating.

  173. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 17, 2010 7:50 pm

I think having Rolovich become OC or a completely new OC would be a good idea.

The question if we did get someone new is who would be versed in this RnS type of offense or even the Air-Raid type offense?

As much as I respect Mouse Davis for having accomplished what he did, I wouldn’t be too enthusiastic in having him as a hire.

Short Bess article from Hawaii News Now.

The former Warrior wide receiver led the Miami Dolphins in catches with 76, and in receiving yards with about 750, this past season.

Those are remarkable numbers considering Bess wasn’t drafted out of college and he’s played just two years in the NFL.

“My success now doesn’t surprise me because I set the bar high for myself. I set my expectations high. It’s just a matter of me going out and, you know, the coaches blessed me with an opportunity and then just making the most of it,” he said.

  202. Ralph February 17, 2010 10:28 pm

coach Mac announces changes to be made in March, but already the fans and the media are making their own assessments. Mac it’s your choice and decision, but it’s all about timing. For the next 4 or 5 weeks the media, forums and fans will be taking shots at who goes, who stays, and reasons why some are deserving and some are not. You’re bringing unnecessary discussions onto your position, some positive and some negative, because you didn’t make a decisive decision, why wait until mid march, why? State policy on hiring, good reason, but why let fans speculate when you could have made the announcement when all the paper work was complete and legal to do so.

  203. al February 17, 2010 10:33 pm

  206. Stephen Tsai February 17, 2010 10:40 pm

While these moves are all strong possibilities, they’re not absolutes because legally UH has to go through the hiring process.
So if a more qualified candidate applies for the job that Tuioti desires, then that candidate gets the job.
As for the defensive coordinator’s job, there is no posting.
Now Aranda called most of the defensive plays last year, and, as far I know, Cal Lee didn’t call any. So giving Aranda a title wouldn’t change duties. And, if I’m not mistaken, it won’t change the pay, either.

At our place several years ago, we had an opening for a position. A male applicant was told that we had a specific type we were looking for. The applicant threatened to sue. He now works for us. (He’s actually a pretty well-decorated worker, but you get the point.)

The job advertised is “Assistant Football Coach”.

Like ST says, anyone who meets the M Q’s can apply.

So, if Aranda applies and gets the job (and pay), his Assistant Coach
position becomes open. Then, there will another job posting for this opening.

If the thought was to promote Aranda, then this would the way to a higher position and pay. The DC position stays as it is, although the job assignment is altered.

Then, Tuioti can apply for the Assistant Coach position vacated by Aranda. Tuioti to Assistant Head Coach will not happen – not fair, and it’s not the intent. The intent is to promote Aranda.

The odd man out is Lumpkin. I hope the pay difference betwen Asst HC and Recruiting Coord is made up in some way, for this loyal soldier.

hoo boy – good fun yah, speculating like this.

  215. ai-eee-soos February 17, 2010 11:25 pm

  217. Stephen Tsai February 17, 2010 11:56 pm

Like I said, there are strong possibilities, but until after the application deadline, nothing is a sure thing.
And, again, if Cal Lee were to lose his DC title, it really wouldn’t mean anything since he wasn’t calling plays, anyway. He would be doing the exact same thing he’s been doing since he got to UH: coaching LBs, helping with the defensive game plan, recruiting.

  218. Ralph February 18, 2010 12:03 am

Here’s a comparison with UCLA in average attendance, maybe Garett can tell us if their department is in the black or red.
mbb 8045, fb 64547, mvb 1270, baseball 727, wbb 1811, wvb 1375 and softball 606. UCLA fields 22 sports, 10 men, 12 women. UH is far behind in mbb and fb in attendance, we do better in mvb, wvb and baseball and we field less teams. But then again, we do not have BCS monies.
UH got to maximize the use of the SSC and Aloha stadium to cut the deficit, otherwise we will see a deficit of 2 million plus every year.

  219. al February 18, 2010 12:05 am

ralph, since you follow wvb so much.

  221. Ralph February 18, 2010 12:25 am

lots of free time: our old nemesis BYU, are they making ends meet?
average attendance marks: fb 64102, mbb 13383, baseball NA, mvb 2454, wbb 805, softball NA, wvb 1323. BYU fields 19 sports. again fb and mbb attendance differences with UH are quite large, use the multiplier effect for the number of home games and that folks is a lot of moola.

  222. Ralph February 18, 2010 12:26 am

Sealy loss 3 returnees who transferred out including his starting setter.

  223. Ralph February 18, 2010 12:34 am

We win and the fans will come. Na Wahine vb won from the outset in Klum and played the best. Fan support has not let up, UH leads all vb program in attendance. There were fluctuations in attendance year to year but UH still lead in average and total attendance and the program finished in the black.

    RE: Hitler vball spoof.

    I know it’s a joke and I said before.

I find NOTHING comical about “Hawaii played HS teams”.

Oh really? 12th seeded Rainbow Wahine played 5th seed Illinois and whatever Michigan was seeded and those were HS teams huh?

I screamed the words “pathetic” and that was in reference to the pathetic nature of way we were disrespected, but ultimately our ladies showed that those victims were not even in the same league as us.

Now our 12th seed last year? That was pretty damn funny!

BUT that was all last year…

Onward and upward to this upcoming season. No Gil? No problem!

  226. Kazz February 18, 2010 1:16 am

  228. Paka February 18, 2010 1:38 am

If I remember clearly, they advertised for the job every year because we were on 1 year contracts. Could be wrong. But it is also a way of moving positions. A coordinator is a differernt position than assistant coach. Just like assistant head coach. It is supposed to have a wider pay range.

  229. Ralph February 18, 2010 1:58 am

10.1 M deficit by June, 2010- end of the fiscal period. auwe. baseball loss 650K in 2008, we start the 2010 season this weekend, so what happened to the ’09 season in the last fiscal period that ended last June. There must be a lag time in reporting or when a sport finances is tallied. Baseball had a huge surge at the start of the season, hopefully the losses will be less. Baseball under Murakami made money most of the time, kind of faded for several years before his retirement due to health issue.

  232. Ralph February 18, 2010 2:35 am

JD states the biggest cash cow to save money by dropping a sport would be baseball but what do we do with a concrete stadium. Baseball, wvb, mvb, mbb and football were money makers at one time, figure out what happened, make the adjustment, and find new leadership to move forward.

  233. Ralph February 18, 2010 2:46 am

Coach Trap has been at the helm for 9 years, most of those years have been in the red in the 400 to 500K level. Mbb and Mvb barely clears the black, can be a lot better with better leadership-just win baby! baseball can be a positive, what would be the projected revenues with an average attendance of 2500, 2600, 2700, etc. have a goal in mind and work towards that end. Try to generate revenues that equals projected expenses, little steps, than push the button and try to increase the fan base to move into black numbers. Trap is running a club program- recruit players, coach, play the game but he is not tuned to the business aspect of running the program, not his problem. But it is if he doesn’t win often and win the WAC often to bring out the fans.

  234. Ralph February 18, 2010 2:49 am

A month ago Coach Mack said “Aranda is big time.”

I’m a betting man. Aranda is gonna move up.

But that is only on the defensive side of the ball. Coach’s biggest move has got to come on the Offensive side of the ball.

Watching Coach Miano two years ago in spring practice, had the good fortune of watching him coach Mr. Mouton, the db, dfuring drills. Coach Miano told Mouton “you have to study.” he said that, in front of other players. and Mouton told coach, “I’m going to play football, coach.” in front of other players.

that is my recollection of the conversation. and my gut feeling, at that time, was that this kid was talking back to the coach, in front of other players.

my gut feeling was, this isn’t good. and that observation shaped how i feel today.

  237. addahknowjoe February 18, 2010 2:58 am

    Garret-

Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Vodafone, and Telefonica have all vowed to use LTE technology. The immediate problem is, Verizon is still two months away from completing initial tests of the technology in Seattle and Boston. (and BTW: totally nonexistent here in Hawaii) WiMax exist and is currently more mature than LTE. That’s why Clearwire chose to go with that technology.

Clearwire’s WiMax speed is not a factor. The key is they are first to market and building their 4G network here in the islands and in parts across the nation. Meantime, LTE still won’t be deployed in Hawaii anytime soon.

Even if the market were to dictate a change to LTE is necessary, (and it will) Clearwires network is built using IP. Upgrading it to some other type of technology like LTE, will require little effort or expense. Adding more radios to its existing infrastructure solves the problem. They’ll be able to offer both technologies and migrate to the other with no noticeable change in quality of service to the customer.

I wouldn’t be too worried about your friends employ at Clearwire. They plan to stick around. And if not? I’m sure your friends are capable of finding employ elsewhere. Poho all dat education if they can’t. =)

I have no doubt Verizon’s LTE service will offer the same if not better service and be commonplace in the islands. I personally would love to see it tested and implemented here. But, that’s someday. Who knows when that’ll be, yeah?

For now, WiMax is the only 4G deal in town. Sorry about that. =)

  246. Garret February 18, 2010 4:55 am

    addahknowjoe,

It is too bad that LTE isn’t going to be in Hawaii anytime soon. Clearwire *does* have the big advantage in Hawaii then…Hawaii is a unique market so if Clearwire gets enough customers early enough then it will be hard for LTE to win out.

  247. Garret February 18, 2010 5:12 am

It is pretty impressive that BSU hired Cal’s defensive coordinator to be their defensive coordinator. Instead of having to get a non-coordinator from an AQ conference school or a DC from a non-AQ school, they got a DC from a Pac-10 school.

Boise State hired California defensive coordinator Bob Gregory as a defensive assistant coach. Gregory has been the defensive coordinator at Cal for the last eight years. He was defensive coordinator for Boise State in 2001.

Petersen and Gregory worked together from 1998 to 2000 at Oregon. They were on the same staff in Boise in 2001, as offensive and defensive coordinators for former head coach Dan Hawkins.

Interesting speculation about re-shuffling of coaches / responsibilities. The speculation about Lumpkin to Recruiting Coordinator concerns me for the obvious reason that , as far as I know, he doesn’t have the contacts or relationships that Tuioti has cultivated. That’s a mismatch & a liability in my book. Am I missing something??

  252. Bigislandkurt February 18, 2010 7:01 am

Lumpkin got many many contacts and have recruited many fine players to UH. Tony T always wanted to be a coach and Mack was sure going to find a way to 1) get him on staff and 2) take advantage of some Las Vegas and Cali contacts. But let’s not sell Lump short, he has him some contacts. Especially in California. He is well-recognized in the college football coaching fraternity.

    BIK

  253. Pomai February 18, 2010 7:34 am

Just read the article on the budget, isn’t it kind of odd that in 2001 we where in the black to the tune of 2,169,204. The very year that the fumbler was hired we then went in the red for 296,719, then every year after went deeper in debt, an the year he left we where in the red to the tune of 5,418,715, an the kicker is he got a bonus. He was very smart to work out the agreement of not being able to be sued. But then again can the manipulation of figures to collect that bonus be considered fraud?

  254. Da Punchbowl Kid February 18, 2010 7:55 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Love the chilly weather we’re having. Gonna make chili tonight if the weather stays the same.

It was interesting watching the speculation about coaching changes. Fun while it lasted. It’s going to be even more interesting to see how Aranda does, given that we seem to loading up on defensive players.

  255. Alex February 18, 2010 7:56 am

I think Lumpkin might have contacts since he has been with the program forever, but the question is…can he “relate” to them like Tuioti can? That makes a big difference

  256. Da Punchbowl Kid February 18, 2010 7:58 am

    Tsai-
Will Aranda get any kind of pay raise, assuming he is named DC?
    Does anybody else know?

  257. Richie February 18, 2010 9:06 am

I certainly feel for people like Coach Cal Lee who has a brilliant defensive mind and who has never been allowed to do his thing as the defensive coordinator at UH. Coach Miano has also been a very dedicated coach over the years and had a long career in the NFL. I cannot believe that this move with David Aranda will not hurt morale somewhat on the staff. Coach Mack, however, was hired as the head coach and it is his prerogative to make the changes to his staff that he sees fit.

I do hope, however, that Jim Donovan makes the same evaluation of Coach Mack and holds him to the same kind of standards after this coming season if these changes on Coach Mack’s staff do not improve the situation.

Lawyers represent the interest of their clients and get paid for that service. If we are concerned about frivolous lawsuits, then perhaps we might admonish American’s to look in the mirror and stop being so litigious. Without demand these lawyers would be out of work- that’s how a market economy works.
