Warriors are 29th; Bess gets paid

Yes, we know that there are no ranking placements awarded for “also receiving votes.” But it is impressive the Warriors received eight points, tying them for 29th, in the AP poll.

The Warriors received votes from David Jones, Jon Werner, Sal Interdonato and Tom Mulhern.

Here’s how the voting went: AP voting.

“Ferd” gave his No. 1 vote to Boise State.

* * * * *

Davone Bess just agreed to a contract extension that will make him one of the 35 highest-paid receivers in the NFL. Figures were not released, but estimates of the range begin at an average of $3.5 million per year. He would be be under contract through the 2013 season, but that would allow him to be a free agent when he is 28.

* * * * *

The first thing tomorrow morning, Greg McMackin needs to go into Jim Donovan’s office and demand a raise and contract extention … for coordinators Nick Rolovich and Dave Aranda. Both have done exceptional work this season, and both deserve multi-year contracts.

* * * * *

Are the Warriors a top-25 team? Not for the season. But over the past four weeks, they certainly have been one of the top 25 teams. The offense makes big plays, and the defense has played well.

* * * * *

That fourth-quarter pass from Bryant Moniz to Greg Salas might be the season’s best play. Moniz had to escape — twice — the clutches of the fastest defensive player in the country, then, after rolling to his left, threw against the grain to Salas, who broke off his route.

* * * * *

For many reasons, it appeared the Warriors wanted to be beat Nevada more than any other team they  faced in the past three years. It’s too bad the Pack is leaving the WAC. Once the transition is complete, I doubt the teams will ever play each other again.

Cheap trick, but running this guy’s photo always pumps up the blog hits:

    Great win Warriors!

    Run the WAC!!

  2. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:37 am

You know, that just might be possible.

  3. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 2:37 am

    second?

  4. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 2:37 am

third is good behind Mr. Tsai and WarriorMojo

  5. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:38 am

Are you guys up early or late?

  6. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 2:39 am

Coach Mack should also include Coach Shaw to that list

  7. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 2:41 am

It’s 2 pm my time–I am in Germany and nothing to do but scour the internet. TV is useless because most are in German and MTV is the only one in English I can find. CNN is not part of the package, I guess.

  8. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:43 am

Too bad MTV doesn’t play music anymore.

  9. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:44 am

It was a great game by the Warriors. Defense played well.

  10. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 2:44 am

What are you doing up so early there Mr. Tsai? You must have had a long day?

  11. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 2:47 am

Did I mention it is freaking cold here and to top that off, I forgot to bring my jacket so I had to walk a couple of miles with my longsleeve shirt trying to find a vendor that sells clothes AND to put on icing to the cake, most Germans don’t work on Sunday. I did find one at the main train station. Lucky me.

  12. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:47 am

I slept too much before the game. Now I’m wide awake.

  13. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:49 am

Better stay warm. Don’t want to catch a cold. Those things are impossible to cure when the weather turns bad.

  14. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 2:49 am

Yes, defense played really well. Too bad, it doesn’t reflect that in the score.

  15. WarriorMojo October 17, 2010 2:49 am

Adrenalin, ST. Hard to sleep after a lights out performance like that by OUR team. HAWAII’S TEAM. WARRIOR fan for LIFE!!

  16. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 2:50 am

Hey, ST, when is the Princess coming back. I miss the shows and on field reporting especially when I am away

  17. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 2:52 am

The special team should practice special teams coverage for one whole day. They played good last week but needs to be consistent. Do we need another special teams coach?

  18. WarriorMojo October 17, 2010 2:52 am

I gotta say, in ALL the years I’ve been going to games, the way Reno’s #35 celebrated after Ahmad was knocked woozy was one of the most DISGUSTING things I’ve ever seen!

  19. Steve October 17, 2010 2:53 am

    Top Twenty!!!!

  20. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 2:53 am

Lock in those young Coordinators before they get stolen away! Lock in Coach Shaw too.

So good to see and hear Colt again!

Great win for da boyz last night! Keep it going!

Gotta get those Moniz votes in!

  21. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:54 am

Leila is now working for the Board of Regents. It’s a great job, and it looks like it will help her advance in other areas.

I miss her a lot, but right now, it looks like the Star-Advertiser is focusing mostly on the print edition. It might be a while before they start doing regular videos.

  22. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 2:54 am

Funny that our Special Teams coach came from THAT Reno team!

  23. Steve October 17, 2010 2:55 am

Warriors should be in the Top Twenty, also, the way they are playing. Great Win!!!!

  24. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:56 am

I don’t think 35 realized that Ahmad was hurt.

Chalk it up to youthful energy.

  25. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 2:56 am

Good luck to her. Hope it’s a more stable job, but who knows now a days

  26. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:57 am

It’s amazing how Nevada went from being on such a high to being knocked out of the WAC race.

  27. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 2:57 am

Also funny that our defense looked way tougher in stopping the run, man on man, than Arkansas did against Auburn. I don’t care if anyone says they are SEC and we are the WAC. Arkansas was all over the field, making whiffs at Auburn players.

Also weird that they scored over 100 total points, while these high powered, high scoring offenses put up less than 50 on the board.

  28. Steve October 17, 2010 2:57 am

One more traitor to go to make this a perfect season.

  29. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:58 am

I don’t think it’s really listed as a “permanent” job. But she’s bright, and when they realize that, they won’t want to let her get away. She has a bright future.

  30. WarriorMojo October 17, 2010 2:58 am

This was a FANTASTIC weekend for UH sports. The Hoop Fest was awesome. Coach Arnold has a very talented team on his hands. I really think we have a great chance to take the WAC basketball championship this year.

  31. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 2:59 am

I think Nevada made a mistake arriving the day before the game.

  32. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 3:00 am

With the success in the past four weeks, the team needs to focus on playing the team in front of them and not focus on Boise. And why isn’t that game against Boise not scheduled to be nationally televised, yet. Come on commish, do your part?

  33. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 3:00 am

I loved the energy and pace of the Hoop Fest.

Some of the past Midnight/Twilight Ohana events seemed to drag.

  34. WarriorMojo October 17, 2010 3:02 am

Yeah, he did, ST. He kept looking back at Ahmad and cheered even more when Ahmad went down. I was watching them the whole time. Disgusting.

  35. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 3:04 am

    ST–

I do wish her the best and I know based on her demeanor, she doesn’t know how to lose. I mean that in a good way.

  36. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 3:05 am

She was a college soccer player.

  37. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 3:05 am

    WM:

It’s all a reflection on their head coach.

  38. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 3:07 am

Hey, if she’s into coaching, she might want to apply for the UH soccer head coach position “when” it becomes available.

  39. BleedGreen808 October 17, 2010 3:12 am

Ok, here’s my gripe while watching the game last night. Why can’t the fans wear one color to the game when UH is asking for a black out or white out or green out. The closest we ever came to that was when Colt was still here. Does this mean, Hawaii fans don’t have green, white, and black UH shirts in their closet. This is one way to support the university which brings up another gripe of mine. I don’t understand why the money that rainbowtique makes doesn’t directly go to lower campus. ok, that’s my gripe for the day

  40. WarriorMojo October 17, 2010 3:14 am

Ordinarily, I would feel some compassion for a team like Nevada. They finally got a taste of national success, started to dream those big dreams, started to hope those big hopes, only to have all of it CRUSHED before their eyes. I think I know what that feels like and would ordinarily have some compassion. Not this time. I hope they cry so many tears on the flight back to Reno that their plane turns into a boat.

Cry, Ault, you sour LOSER. Is your middle initial “L”? It should be, because John Loser Smith and Chris Loser Ault are twins separated at birth.

Cry, Kaepernick, you mutant stork. Hawaii’s D did nothing to stop your vaunted offense except KICK your O-LINE in the ass EVERY SINGLE play. And thanks for the Hollywood act, Mr. Showboat. Cost your team six points and the game and the season.

Cry LT #79, who got called for two holding penalties then acted like a tough guy when the stupid ref called a penalty on Meatoga after he was pushed backwards over a pile.

Cry #35, you disgusting piece of human trash. At least you didn’t shoplift like your Reno buddies. Or did you?

Reno, you don’t DESERVE to play the WARRIORS. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Quote of the day: The pistol offense didn’t look like a pistol but it looked like a quirt gun–Shaw Ching

  43. Pride. October 17, 2010 3:50 am

Something’s wrong. It doesn’t make any sense. How can there be a 4 to 1 advantage in turnovers and the game still be so close. Hmmmmmm. I wonder why that is???

  44. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 3:59 am

    Somebody mentioned Special Teams.

We gave them a short field a few times. Plus, we didn’t capitalize and play consistently on each drive. Main thing, though… we won!!!

And, man… did we get some bad spots and some bad calls!

And, in keeping with fine, WAC tradition this year, football PoW will probably be Kaepernick!

  45. mctruck October 17, 2010 4:16 am

I’m very pleased with the way things turned out…a big win.

Neveda did a good job containing in confining Moniz from breaking for long runs, but hey!!, so did our defense in containing Kaepernick most of the nite. I guess Mr. Moniz came out on top as he found his recievers at the right time(s), and ran/escaped…to make crucial plays when they counted. Kudo’s to the recievers for getting into position quickly for receptions, and the o-line for prevailing over NV’s defense.

UH defense…..WOW!!, thanks for an awesome display of team work…that was the other half of the pleasure I had viewing you guys hard at work.

That rb, Vai Taua is one tough human being….too bad he wasn’t playing for UH. He sorta reminded me of another UH rb who refused to go down on initial contact; a human bowling ball as they say. I could not believe Taua’s toughness as he kept coming back into the game limping badly and leaving for the sidelines after running/catching the fb.

  46. mctruck October 17, 2010 4:18 am

I think either Moniz or Salas/Pilares, will be POW.

  47. 99club October 17, 2010 4:41 am

Good morning Tsaikos! Up early…beautiful morning here in West TX. That was the play of the game, without a doubt. Beating Moch when it looked like he had Moniz dead to rights was amazing. This team is fun to watch.

Oregon State lost last night to Washington and should drop out of the rankings. If Virginia Tech doesn’t sneak back into the polls then you’re going to hear “None of Boise State’s wins are against teams that are currently ranked,” or some version of that statement. As much as I hate Boise, I hate the BCS promoters even more.

  48. Shoko October 17, 2010 5:06 am

    Morning folks!

Great game last night. Got to finish the last quarter of the game. Little intense in the final three minutes of the game. Cheers to Torres on that deflection falling straight into Silva’s hands. That Warriors upset was meant to be. Now go and beat Boise State!!

    GO WARRIORS!

  49. Committed Road Warrior October 17, 2010 5:07 am

Looks like Minnesota finally bit the bullet and fired their head football coach:

  50. 99club October 17, 2010 5:10 am

It’d be a real surprise if Paredes wasn’t defensive player of the week.

    Bonehead quote of the week:

“There was nothing Hawaii did tonight to stop us,” said Kaepernick, the school’s all-time leader in total offense. “Just lack of execution (on our part), we didn’t play like ourselves tonight.”

Young man, just tip your hat to the team that beats you and show some class.

  51. Hank October 17, 2010 5:11 am

    Michigan Warrior and BleedGreen808 …

I think before we give the SPECIAL TEAMS COACH a raise, he needs to teach our Warriors how to recover an on side kick or talk to Dick Tomey who commented on it last night for those of us watching from Vegas.

It almost cost us the game.

  52. G (China) October 17, 2010 5:13 am

so warriormojo, tell us how you really feel about the game.

  53. G (China) October 17, 2010 5:15 am

interesting to note is that you had a lot of upsets in the top 25 yesterday. 1, 5, 10, 12, 19, 22, 23, and 24 went down. Who knows how close Warriors will sneak in there. I know that probably isn’t in the priority but a top 25 or near it finish will go a long way for next year’s team too.

  54. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:16 am

Hank… Who said anything about giving our Special Teams Coach a raise?

I said to lock in our Offensive and Defensive Cordinators before they get stolen away. I also said we need to hang on to Coach Shaw. Only comment I made about our special teams coach (Coach Tormey) is that he came from Nevada.

  55. Hank October 17, 2010 5:19 am

MW…I stand corrected…glad to see we are on the same page.

  56. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:20 am

Wonder if Pat Hill wants to coach our Special Teams?

  57. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:23 am

Weird that several other teams from BCS conferences are putting up some serious passing stats, and yet we hear nothing of “system” talk by the east coast, midwest, and southern experts!

  58. wafan October 17, 2010 5:26 am

Hey! You guys were over here!!!

  59. Pomai October 17, 2010 5:27 am

Well we didn’t have a winner this week, maybe this week?

    UH vsUtah

    28    –    10    Pomai

    35    –    24    Pride

    42    –    17    protector

    46    –    14    d1

    49    –    21    DPK

  60. wafan October 17, 2010 5:27 am

Good win last night wrecking Reno’s ranking and season.

Next job is to plow the farmers.

  61. skycap October 17, 2010 5:28 am

    #31, ST,

Yeah, not enough time to Shoplift.

  62. wafan October 17, 2010 5:28 am

    Pomai . . .

    38 us and 21 farmers.

    Thanks for running Pomai’s Pix!!!

  63. Pride. October 17, 2010 5:29 am

There’s a pretty good special teams coach up in Seattle. He may be interested in coaching at Hawaii.

  64. wafan October 17, 2010 5:29 am

It was cool to actually hear coordinated cheering on the radio last night. FINALLY!!!

It has been a long time since that last happened.

  65. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:30 am

If UC-Fresno State and Reno will surely leave to the MWC, and not reconsider staying in the WAC, then I will be cheering for everyone else (they play against in the WAC) to upset them even more! Both teams need to go over there as losers! And… aren’t Kaepernick, Taua, and Moch seniors?

  66. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:31 am

Yeah, Pomai… go figure… everyone overbid!!!

  67. Garret October 17, 2010 5:31 am

I agree that Rolo and Aranda could be targeted by big budget schools soon and UH should sign them to multi-year contracts. Both of their contracts run out after this season. Some schools around the country have already set the precedent by signing coordinators to multi-year contracts when they want to keep them.

  68. Garret October 17, 2010 5:32 am

I finished the quotes from the game. It was great to read all the different positive quotes. Everybody seems to have talked about the Moniz scramble/pass to Salas play that ST highlighted above.

    http://uhwarriorquotes.blogspot.com/2010/10/quotes-from-uh-nevada-game-101610.html

  69. wafan October 17, 2010 5:33 am

    MW . . .

I think all three are seniors. It might get real ugly next year for them. Oh well. Too bad. So sad.

  70. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:34 am

Pride… thing is, Coach Mack is too nice. Other coaches wouldn’t think twice about doing it right now, but I don’t think Coach Mack would let Coach Tormey go and bring in someone else just yet. (Unless we suck at Special Teams for the rest of this season.)

  71. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:34 am

    wafan… lol!!! That’s what I’m talking about!

  72. Shoko October 17, 2010 5:35 am

Just got done reading some post-game interviews. Chris Murray asked Ault about the game-ending interception: “What do you want me to say? He should have caught it. Right? I mean, it’s a tough play.”

    Ho, the buggah is salty.

Reagrding Tormey, that was a great win for him considering how he left the Nevada program. If not mistaken, he was fired by Ault, who at the time was the AD, then he (Ault) appointed himself to the position, which pays more than the schools AD. Alot of Pack fans didn’t like that and is probably the reason they call him Coach (F)Ault. 😆

  73. Garret October 17, 2010 5:36 am

Funny that our Special Teams coach came from THAT Reno team!

    Michigan Warrior,

Ault fired that coach…and special teams almost gave the game to Nevada. If special teams hadn’t given short fields to Nevada twice, UH’s D probably would have shut down Nevada from scoring even more and the game wouldn’t have been close.

  74. 808ike October 17, 2010 5:43 am

    Good morning all.

    Great game last night.

    Go Warriors!!!!

    Go Wahines tonight!!!!!

  75. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 5:50 am

“Special” doesn’t mean handicapped – but the ST play was abysmal! Adding to Garret’s list of #650 (last blog) – missed FG in 1Q. Those could have been important points in the end.

On the plus side – Dunnachie and Enos did well with their punts/kick-offs, and the punt-coverage was solid (except for the interference call).

  76. Matt October 17, 2010 5:51 am

Oops, I was still posting on the last blog. Good morning everyone and good win for the Warriors last night.

  77. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:56 am

One thing that really pissed me off is hearing Kaepernick say, “There was nothing Hawaii did tonight to stop us”.

Dude, you and Taua did not gain a hundred yards rushing like you usually do. Our defense swarmed and caused you problems, or you wouldn’t have had all those turnovers. I hope you guys go on a nice, long losing streak!!!

  78. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 5:56 am

Okay, there were many changes on the OL, and perhaps the crowd noise contributed, but the penalties on the OL have to cease! Those were key drive stoppers and prevented any momentum surge. Really, these mistakes were the only thing stopping Mo & the O from turning this into a rout!

  79. wafan October 17, 2010 5:57 am

    Brew? Is that really you?

    Geez!!! Welcome home!

  80. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 5:57 am

Kaepernick is an awesome athlete! A QB – not in my book! 👿

  81. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 6:02 am

The D was outstanding! 🙂 Tackling greatly improved. You have to appreciate the swarm to the ball! Good job.

But – what’s with getting burned on the same swing pass on two TDs? Okay – the first was on a jailhouse blitz, but the defenders should have recognized the same play the second time.

    Torres is a Terror!

  82. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 6:02 am

I know that Coach Ault was AD Ault, and fired Coach Tormey to take over the HC job. I was implying that Reno’s Special Teams executed better than ours, and yet the coach that used to coach them is now our Special Teams Coach.

Sorry, thought it was a simple, tongue-in-cheek statement. Guess I should’ve said exactly what I meant.

  83. Okole Maluna October 17, 2010 6:03 am

Bryant Moniz should be the WAC Offense Player of the week having a 3 TD and no turnover.

Moore BSU playing lowly SJS 2TD

Kaepernick had 2TD and 3 turnover (1 Major one in the End Zone that was Sweet!) plus last turnover to End the Game.

Colburn Fresno State only had 1 TD. renegade

By far and away Bryant is not only WAC Conference but as the ‘National Leaders in Yardage and Touchdown’ should be our Conference Marquee QB right now.

Not those renegade team QB. Are you listening Karl Benson and how about doing your job and get Hawaii @ Boise State on National Network Coverage you still got 3 weeks to do it!

But I dough very much he won’t be able to do it. He hasn’t done any lately for WAC.

Every Warrior Fans right now should be voting Moniz as Top QB for the O’Brien Quaterback Award. Send to all your friends and contact to vote on this Link today:

    http://www.voteobrien.org/round1.asp

Today is Sunday so there is no excuse but only to go to Church and vote this link like hell!

Only 1000 vote from Hawaii? We do have more Warrior fans than that don’t we?

And another thing…. still not happy w/ clock management! I cringe every time a time-out was “wasted”! Again – might have needed it at the end if they had scored….. Whew! 🙄

  85. Matt October 17, 2010 6:05 am

Kaepernick is just pissed that he has never won in Hawaii in 3 tries. Give the Warrior defense credit. They played their best game in the Coach Mack era last night. The offense was a little off, but did enough to get the win. That play by Moniz where he got away from pressure and threw the long pass to Salas and the never give up effort by Paredes to cause the fumble by Kaepernick into the end zone, were the two biggest plays of the game.

  86. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 6:09 am

Oh and not only Moniz as Offense Player of the Week.

But Paredes should be Defense Player of the Week with his Kaepernick – End Zone Slap Touch Back as the Play of the Century! I don’t recall any play this close to Touchdown with turnover for touchback play.

  90. Shoko October 17, 2010 6:18 am

Sagarin came out with his rankings. For anyone that might be interested.

Hmm, Hawaii might be 12 point favorites going into Aggie territory.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

This game and Fresno were perhaps the most satisfying thus far for the season. It showed the continuous improvement of the team and springboards them into each succeeding game. I hope it continues till the end with increasing intensity and grit. Kudos to coaches for keeping the team focused toward improvement and quality effort.

  94. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 6:21 am

Remember that LaTech QB, Jenkins? The guy came in near the end of the 2nd quarter against us, and drove them for a score. He then led them to two more scores against us in the 2nd half.

Anyways, he passed for 422 yards yesterday in LaTech’s win over Idaho. Looks like LaTech may be getting their game together, with Boise State coming up next.

In the mean time, Idaho threw for 500+ yards (between 2 QB’s).

Hey brew! Nice to see you back.

The onside kick was just a great job by their kicker more than any kind of a special teams ‘lapse.’ That thing went WAY up there like a jump ball with serious hang time. Tomey called it right on ESPN3.

Hawaii has beaten and covered the spread points EVERY game this season.

The gamblers love Hawaii right now.

East Carolina was a key team for many seasons in a row for doing that.

  103. Shoko October 17, 2010 6:52 am

Was reading the comment section in the Reno paper. Pretty hilarious. People are talking about firing Ault after the Hawaii loss. Seems like if you’re not a top 25 team, have an undefeated season and a trip to a BCS bowl, the program is in shambles and the coach needs to be replaced. 😆 Man!

  104. R Fong October 17, 2010 6:54 am

Is Colt Brennan having any public appearances while he is in Hawaii??

  105. Shoko October 17, 2010 6:55 am

And, why is it during post game, the coaches have police who are looking around as if they’re secret service agents scanning the crowd for snipers?

Okay, I’m done for the day…

  106. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 7:00 am

Speaking of “crap” – what gives with the UH marketing dept. Is there even one? Sheeesssshhh! 🙄

Okay – this is a long term problem – sort of a Catch-22. I know you guys have been discussing this and related issues recently. Here’s my 22 cents….

It starts & ends with WINNING!!! U No WIN, pretty much nothing will remedy the situation.

WIN – and you get “buzz”.

WIN – and you draw fan/community support.

WIN – and attendance will grow. 45k average should be the goal.

WIN – and friends & families will start showing up -> Families w/ kids! Nearly everyone participating on this forum recounts days of attending games w/ their ‘ohana and pals. Now, the kids are at home sometimes noticing the game while busy w/ their electronics & gadgets.

WIN – and kids will want to attend THEIR hometown university.

WIN – and the students will want to attend games and support their school and Team.

WIN – and the students won’t protest over minimal student fees (maybe not….)

WIN – and you get positive publicity, rankings, games on ESPN.

WIN – and you get included in conference realignment.

WIN – and you get games w/ other big name schools.

So, bottom line (my 22 cents) –

    W I N !!! 😐

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

man o man, what a great great great win. all the points made about all the things that coulda been done better, you’re right of course, but the best point is that the Warriors wanted the win and played hungry the whole game. they all contributed. you can tell that by watching how many limped off the field. the Warriors played hard. really hard. so so so proud!

and to Reno, you guyz think you betta than us? go home and stay home crybabies. maybe not all, but the ones at the top are real crybabies. yup, I’m talking about the Coach Ault, and the qb Kaepernick. instead of recognizing the better team, they walked off the field.

sure was satisfying waving the bannah, RESPECT Hawaii!

btw, the Tgate was super great, before and after the game. great company, great food, great comraderie.

    Go Warriors.

Sounds like UNR DE Moch gave Moniz some credit.

Referring to Moniz’s magic act to get away from pressure and throw the ball 37 yards to Salas:

“The Play” of the game, for sure, acknowledged Nevada defensive end Dontay Moch.

    About Moniz’s overall play:

He’s a very good athlete; the guy made the plays they had to have

you’re sooo right about coaches Rolovich and Aranda

they have worked really hard, and they have produced results

including building the confidence of their troops.

they deserve good jobs. they’ve earned it.

don’t delay, Mr. Donovan, don’t delay. please offer these gentlemen

multi year contracts. they offer hope for our older coaches. they offer us a future when we got back stabbers like Reno and Fresno and Boise.

  122. papajoe2 October 17, 2010 7:53 am

#114 BHF2, Eh, how about Mana? Right place, right time. We’re proud of him and I’m sure the Big Island going nuts. It wasn’t just Mana though. The whole defense and TEAM played well. Reminds me of the days when UH’s defense was so good, I kind of wanted the other team to have the ball so we could score.Bwwaahahahaha.

  123. big hilo fan 2 October 17, 2010 7:54 am

so you got a great program, like Univversity of Florida.

they took a long time, and spent a lot of moolah, to make

and then they get one idiot who threatens all the high schools that also use the logo for the Gators. big deal. talk about the negative vibes. good thing for us we no mo that kine idiots. yeh?

  125. papajoe2 October 17, 2010 8:04 am

TYaiea and D1, eh you guys. No start that all over again. I think the rules are, make your predictions after 12 noon today to make it count.:) No worry, the win last night make everybody feel good. You guys picked UH to win, but I think the whole state going pick UH. Only thing is we cannot get BIG HEAD as Utah State gave Oklahoma hard time and won some games that was unexpected, plus they play at home, and THEY’RE NOT LEAVING THE WAC, just yet anyway. Warriors, stay focused because the season not pau yet. Take care of business and win 1 game at a time. OK, you guys can celebrate today, but tomorrow……..BACK TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!

  126. papajoe2 October 17, 2010 8:08 am

  129. Matt October 17, 2010 8:18 am

I’m surprised none of the newscasts in chawan_cut’s video showed the play where Moniz escaped pressure and made the long completion to Salas or Paredes’ punch out at the goal line. I just watched those again. Just as good this time. 😀

  130. TYaiea October 17, 2010 8:24 am

Papajoe2. Yeah getting carried away. But, have a feeling we gonna play the Broncos for the WAC championship. We’re getting better every game. Plus USU lost to Fresno and LaTech. LaTech smacked Idaho Vandals. The only way we going lose to them is if we beat ourselves. IMUA

  131. Pauoa Boy October 17, 2010 8:25 am

  134. Matt October 17, 2010 8:30 am

I have to say that the onside kick by the Nevada kicker was one of the best that I have ever seen. I wonder how much Aloha Stadium’s “hard” turf had to do with that huge bounce.

  135. Matt October 17, 2010 8:34 am

Just watched Mana’s interception again. Just as good this time.

  136. Jack Flash October 17, 2010 8:34 am

  142. papajoe2 October 17, 2010 8:39 am

Seeking perfection…… What to work on. Definitely, the “O” and “D” of special teams. Cutting down on penalties!! One “D” lineman almost cost us big time. Yeah, wasn’t his fault, but still gotta keep a cool head and think if you helping the team or making it worster(public school ting). Dropped passes. Cannot stop practicing catching and securing the ball. I did notice the d linemen penetrating the backfield more in the last 2 games than previously. I still would like the d linemen to get their hands up as the QB making a throw to either block the pass or alter the throwing motion of the qb, or lanes for the qb. For the most part, the tackling improved since game 1, but cannot stop wrapping the ball carrier. Noticed also that the D linemen are not “dancing” as much with the other teams o line, but staying low and shaking off the block quicker. This is a good thing. There was 1 play that the camera had a perfect view of Kappie scrambling, and the defensive player, with a shot at making the tackle, looking at his eyes or face and getting faked out. Good thing the pursuit of the other players got the qb before a huge gain or td. Playing against “fancy” runners the “D” must focus on the hips, not the eyes or face while trying to make a tackle.Because of travel for this weeks game, the Warriors will have a “short” week of practice, yet, in their quest for perfection, they must fit in all this things. I know the coaches can see more than we can, like busted routes and all kinds of missed assignments, but if “Joe fan” can see the obvious, then it definitely needs to be worked on.

  143. Pomai October 17, 2010 8:41 am

First let me say that this has to be the game of the season so far. But I have a question for the coach’s, the one play you put Jake Huen in the game he had skinny legs running for his life and he threw a interception, WHY isn’t Jake playing more? The guy is a beast an every time he has been in the game he has put pressure on the QB, go look at the tapes every play. So I am confused?????

  144. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 8:41 am

  146. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 8:46 am

Even though the Nevada sports information person was useless (which is surprising, because he was a great reporter), and even though the coach wasn’t very gracious, I’m sympathetic to teams whose dreams end in the middle of October.

  147. Pomai October 17, 2010 8:46 am

I was thinking the same thing, it looked like the kick went in the air and did not touch the ground and I said the same thing after it, He should have signaled fair catch, can you imagine, ault would have had a heart attack.

  148. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 8:49 am

Fresno and Boise are good additions for the MWC. But Nevada? Truly puzzling. Team doesn’t draw well, and its fans don’t travel at all. I mean, 87 fans for one of the Hawaii Bowls. That doesn’t average to one parent per player.

  149. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 8:50 am

I’m curious as to why Enos kicked the ball to the middle of the field. Usually, UH aims for the right of the hashmark.

  150. Hawaiianbod October 17, 2010 8:51 am

just casted my two votes for Mo. He now has 1068 votes and is inching closer to #20, who has 1,419 votes. C’mon Warrior Nation lets surpass the #19 crybaby qb (aka Crappernack). heheh

    Longest run by Taua…..9 yards.

    Longest run by Kapernick….11 yards

Longest pass play by Kap….15 yards (I think)

Defense did not allow an offensive play of more than 20 yards all night.

  153. CoolEthan October 17, 2010 8:53 am

    Thanks for the correction TYaiea.

Utah St. Utah St. Utah St.

They have traps set under the turf, just waiting for the Warriors that gonna hunt them down.

Very athletic this team. That darn altitude is waiting again. Better QB than Krazy legs from last night.

Put Boise on the back burner, and only think Utah St.

  154. CoolEthan October 17, 2010 8:54 am

MWC getting desperate. That’s why Nevada defected to them.

Your right, they don’t draw a good fan travel base.

Reno’ites stay in Reno and call 911 all day

  155. RedZone October 17, 2010 8:56 am

I want to thank Richard Torres for coming up big in this game. That interception he made in the 2nd half was big time. He also was in the right place to distract the Nevada receiver who tipped the ball resulting in the Mana Silva interception.

  156. CoolEthan October 17, 2010 8:58 am

Watched the replay this am on the ESPN3.com site.

I like listening to Coach Tomey, though the camera guys gave me motion sickness.

I’m sure Tomey whispered in his partners ear about correcting the opening statement that is Colt Brennan, not Colt “McCoy” on the sidelines.

  157. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:00 am

I mean, can you imagine after they kicked the ball, and everyone is yelling “fair catch, fair catch”. Wonder if that would’ve made Reno back off and not hit the guy who signalled it? Almost like an instinctive reaction to not get a penalty, or something.

  158. Matt October 17, 2010 9:00 am

I just watched the replay of the onside kick. I can’t tell for sure, but it looks like he kicked it into the ground. The direction that the ball is rotating would indicate that it hit the ground. If he kicked the bottom of the ball straight up, it would have been rotating clockwise (if watching it from the bottom of the midfield “H” logo). Instead, the ball appeared to be rotating counterclockwise. Both of the WAC Sports Network announcers also stated that he did kick it into the ground and they had access to the slow motion replays. Dick Tomey even made a point of saying that we couldn’t fair catch the ball because of it. I don’t have a HD copy of the game, but that’s the way that it looked to me.

  159. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:01 am

Looked like they had two kickers at opposite angles to the ball too. So, it could’ve been kicked to either side.

  160. Slugger October 17, 2010 9:01 am

My friends from AZ say, “Thank you for a great time. Such nice people!” Good to have my ‘ohana meet each other. Extends the world…

  163. papajoe2 October 17, 2010 9:03 am

#147 Thanks, Shoko, but we all knew that Oregon was going to be #1 and not Boise State. Didn’t Boise beat Oregon, the PAC 10 champions, last year? They also beat the MWC champion, TCU last year too. They beat Virginia Tech in the first game this year when VT was ranked #9 (?). They beat Oregon State, who will probably drop since losing this week. I bet that if Oregon loses this week to whomever they are playing and Foise romps again, Oklahoma or Auburn or even LSU ( who put a whupping on McNeese St. by 22 points after trailing in the first qtr.) will leap frog them, to #1. No worry, Warriors fans. I still don’t like Foise, but any vote for a non-BCS team, indirectly, helps the Warriors and other non-BCS teams. Didn’t Foise return 21 of 22 starters from last year?

  164. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:04 am

Wondering how those possible Bball recruits liked the festivities of the past couple of days?

And, with the momentum we’ve got, I hope we’re in talks with possible Fball recruits too. We have a hugely talented Senior class departing this year. We need to be able to use several of our remaining games to get others on the team more experience too.

As long as we keep this train rolling!

  165. Shoko October 17, 2010 9:06 am

Weird. LVSC came out with the Hawaii-Utah State game line and its only 3.5 point favorites for the Warriors.

    Let see…against the Aggies.

Fresno State were 3.5 favorites and won 24-41

La Tech were 2.5 favorites and won 6-24

Hawaii beats Fresno 49-27 and La Tech 41-21. Yet, the Warriors is only 3.5? Either I’m missing something or I’m about to bet the house on this game!!

  170. LizKauai (iPad) October 17, 2010 9:09 am

The ESPN recap was so typical. It was all about Boise and how the Nevada loss would affect their SOS. No props to the Warriors really. I am looking forward to the foise in Boise.

  171. WenatcheeWarrior October 17, 2010 9:09 am

    Hawaii – 48

    Utah State – 35

  172. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:10 am

Matt… that Wimberly kid was clutch for Reno. I think he was the one with that catch.

  173. gigi-hawaii October 17, 2010 9:11 am

    Liz,

That is my score. Could you please change yours?

  174. RedZone October 17, 2010 9:11 am

It was a poor job by the special teams on the onside kick considering that they took a timeout to prepare for it and all the players did was stand there to get overrun by the oncoming Nevada players.

  175. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:12 am

Oh, it was. Sorry, should’ve looked it up first.

  176. Shoko October 17, 2010 9:12 am

    PJ2,

Yep, Boise beat the Ducks last year and they year before that. Beat TCU last year in the Fiesta with one of their trick plays (fake punt) and lost to TCU in the Poinsettia Bowl the year before. Boise State’s chances of a NC title will be dependent on the other remaining undefeated teams. The Broncos are at the mercy of their weak conference schedule, espcially since Hawaii beat Nevada and have now dropped off the top 25 in both polls.

  177. papajoe2 October 17, 2010 9:13 am

My brother ordered a book about the BCS strangle hold on the big bowl games and the money and corruption going on behind the scenes by the BCS teams. GARRET or anyone else read the book or know about it? Right now the book is in flight to his house, so I’ll report about it when I get more information. Although a lot of things are posted on this blog about the subject, there might be some surprises.

  178. Da Punchbowl Kid October 17, 2010 9:16 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Great fun reading the posts today!

Great win for the Warriors, Coach Mack and the program!

Moniz’s sramble play was college football at its best! The scramble, the continued blocking, and finally the catch! EPIC!!!

I voted for Moniz again today. Have you?!

    5. Auburn

    6. LSU

  182. Shoko October 17, 2010 9:18 am

    MW #171,

You must be talking about the La Tech-Idaho game, which was an exciting game. The Aggies has a bye this past weekend.

    ST on#33,

Though it was a fan-friendly night, what I miss about the “old” Midnight-Ohana fests was that there were some very competitive intra-squad (Green/White team) scrimmages that let me get a real feel for the players in actual competition. There also used to be dunking contests and 3-point shooting contests too. I guess the idea was for everybody to have fun, but the celebrity games were just a joke with more of a Globetrotters feel to it.

  195. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:27 am

Yup! Just remember to keep casting your daily votes. This is our last week in Round 1. Voting ends at noon, Central Time, 24Oct2010. Gotta try to get Moniz to move up as high as possible. Round 2 starts the next day, with a clean slate, once the list of 16 Finalists is published.

  196. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 9:28 am

That was an amazing onside kick. It was sort of a pass.

  197. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:28 am

Man, protector… every time I see or hear the name “Globetrotters”, I start whistling their song!!! Now it’s stuck in my head!

  198. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:30 am

ST, did Reno really line up two kickers on opposite sides of the ball? I thought that’s what I saw when it happened. Really quite deceptive.

  199. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 9:30 am

    RE-play… 10 am … K5.. the home team!

whoo hoo! Will be almost as good the second time around…

  200. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 9:31 am

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/player/_/stat/receiving

  202. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:34 am

I thought I saw two kickers facing the ball. One faked moving towards the ball to get our team moving in that direction, then the other one approached and kicked it away, and they recovered it.

  203. Stephen Tsai October 17, 2010 9:34 am

I feel sorry for Kaepernick. I really thought he could be a high draft pick. Now I’m not sure if he gets drafted at all. I think Moniz has moved onto the All-WAC second team.

  204. papajoe2 October 17, 2010 9:34 am

#196 protector, Did the Dog dunk the ball? I heard he is only 5’7-9″ or around there.

  205. papajoe2 October 17, 2010 9:35 am

One kicker is probably a decoy.

  206. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:38 am

Yup, Curveball… and where’s the word on Oklahoma State, or NC State, or other BCS teams, using a gimmick offense to get their yardage? Plus, those QB’s have lousy QB ratings too!

  207. Shoko October 17, 2010 9:38 am

    MW #192,

As someone once mentioned, the Warriors have covered most of their games and are 5-1 against the spread. Will Vegas every learn? Doesn’t look like it, which is fine by me and other sports betters. As ST said, “Show me the money!”. 😉

  208. CoolEthan October 17, 2010 9:38 am

The ESPN commentators that do the Thurs & Friday night games keep on picking and hyping Salas and Pilares for their Fantasy leaque picks. They shuffle around and had both receivers again this week.

There scoring as much as Hawaii with their picks.

  209. Pomai October 17, 2010 9:40 am

One thing for sure they made a lot of money on beer sales last night……

  210. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 9:41 am

How would Nevada go about “firing” their head coach when their head coach is also the Athletic Director?

  211. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:41 am

ESPN has highlights that shows the onside kick. Both kickers approached the ball at the same time.

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/62/hawaii-warriors

  212. I was staring at what looked like pyro “pipes” at midfield.

Then Moniz placed the Hawaiian Flag in them and I realized they were just flag stands.

Damn… wished the Warriors had some pyro while running out!

  213. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 9:42 am

    #209… Shoko… I know, yeah? hahaha!

  214. CoolEthan October 17, 2010 9:42 am

Kaepernick is gonna start oiling up his baseball glove after this season.

Better direction anyways for longevity and $$.

Gotta wonder how he would do under a stronger program and head coach. A coach that can keep his wits about himself.

  215. CoolEthan October 17, 2010 9:43 am

  217. Very disappointed in the lack of a stadium-wide “OVER-RATED” chant.

At the 40-second mark me and my friends and section UU of the north end zone ORANGE tried to start it and even the marching band’s drumline pounded it in unison, but it was kind of weak.

I think people OVERTHINK the meaning behind this chant as it is SIMPLY MEANT TO STICK IT TO THE VISITING TEAM AND THEIR FANS!!! I’M ALL FOR IT!!!!!!! I’M ALL FOR ANYTHING THAT IS CHANTED THAT MAKES THE OPPOSING PLAYERS AND ESPECIALLY THEIR FANS UNCOMFORTABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😆

“I saw (associate head) coach (Rich) Miano tell me to go down,” Silva said. “I didn’t want to lose the ball. It was no time to be a hero. I decided to go down for the team.”

Amazing how a guy can focus on the ball.. watch it get tipped… catch it.. start running and still read what the coaches are signalling….

  227. Da Punchbowl Kid October 17, 2010 9:52 am

#220… Kazz… I was stationed with a couple of guys at Fort Ord, California, back in 82-83 who just loved listening to Frank Zappa. I could’ve sworn that was one of the songs on an album they listened to. It sure sounded like it down the hallway, as I polished my boots! All I could think of was, “oh gross! What are they listening to?” I eventually found out.

By the way, the only guys in the Army I ever met from Minnesota, ALL listened to Frank Zappa. Don’t know why.

#228 mih, on the radio, after I left our PPV headquarters, Mana said he remembered the SF 49er player, just the past game, intercepting the pass and attempted to run it back but fumbled and gave the ball right back. So when he heard Coach tell him to go down, he went down immediately.

  232. Ipu Man October 17, 2010 9:57 am

Papajoe, both coach Tomey and Hill probably would

and could get head college coaching jobs somewhere,

and position coach jobs in the NFL.

So we both are probably just dreaming.

Hope you can comment some more on that book

    about BCS bull $crap…

  233. Matt October 17, 2010 9:57 am

Good catch on the two kickers. That’s a pretty good formation and strategy. I was wondering why there were so few UH players on that side. At first I was pissed that Greg Salas wasn’t in there for the onside kick recovery, but after watching the replay, I saw that he was on the other side. Now I can also understand why the UH coaches burned a timeout before the onside kick.

  234. Derek October 17, 2010 9:57 am

It was written in the stars that UH would beat Fresno St. and Nevada this year. Why? With all that has happened in the WAC and the 2 renegade teams bolting to the MWC, it was BACHI time for those 2 teams who think they are so much better than us. Well, let me tell you that UH is way better than them. Last year was an abberation because we had only 2 returning starters on defense and we had a lot of injuries to boot. I just real stoked today and hope that the team can continue to play well and improve each week. Stay humble! Do you believe in karma? I do.

They can win all the remaining conference games NOT including Boise provided

Boise loses to Nevada.. OR Boise loses to Fresno…

  238. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 10:06 am

Derek… with the way the BCS determines Automatic Qualification status, we can’t let ourselves drop off so badly even in rebuilding years. We lots our offense after ’07. While rebuilding them, we lost our defense after the ’08 season. That led us to the two lousy years in ’08 and ’09. On top of that, we went through probably the most injuries I can remember last year. And yet, we still almost pulled it off.

That’s why, with the huge number of big names graduating this year, we need to get younger players that all important game experience, whenever we can. I hope we are looking more and more attractive to potential recruits, as this season goes on.

  239. jm2375 October 17, 2010 10:07 am

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

It’s a great Sunday isn’t it? It’s always great when the Warriors win on Saturday.

papajoe – There’s some excerpts from the book on Yahoo. One of the authors, I think, is a Yahoo columnist. I read the one about the computer rankings. Ughh. When the statisticians and even the guys who do the rankings don’t like it, there’s something seriously wrong.

Thinking back to the Spring and Summer this year. So much was being said about our defense being our strength. Now that we’re halfway through, and looking back… I’m loving how our defense is playing now. I hope we’ll be able to come out with fire and discipline, and make tackles from game one in the future, and not have to wait until we’re four or five games into the season.

  243. Matt October 17, 2010 10:14 am

    Whoo-hoo, Colt!

  253. Shoko October 17, 2010 10:37 am

    Matt #249,

A valid point as Nevada had SJSU scheduled as their homecoming game. However, Utah State was predicted to finish 4th in the preseason polls before the injuries they sustained. Who’s worried now since Hawaii beat the second and third ranked team that was predicted to finish 2nd and 3rd in the conference? Uh, that would be the Aggies.

  254. papajoe2 October 17, 2010 10:38 am

I was supposed to go to the volleyball game and basketball celebration but my tickets never showed up. So after the 2nd game in vb, I headed out but realized I needed gas. While filling gas I noticed I was short on cash so I drove to a McDonalds for a bank machine which was out of order. Decided it just wasn’t meant to be so I headed home. I was very interested in seeing both the mens and womens basketball teams and hooking up with some Tsaikos. I’ve since heard that it was more of a celebration than a scrimmage. I read Jeff Portnoy’s column/blog, but he doesn’t sound as excited about this team as we are. The men’s bb team was rated as the 7th best recruiting class in the nation. This includes Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA, Syracuse, North Carolina, etc.. #7 in the nation? I hope coach Gib can coach. I know it will take time but at least we should have the talent. Also noted on JP’s column/blog, that one of the players may be a problem on and off the court. He probably knows a lot more then he is telling. I hope everything works out for that person. A 6’8” guard? I don’t think we every had that before.

  255. Shoko October 17, 2010 10:40 am

Anyway, what would really finish this past weekends college game would be for the Niners to beat the Oakland Raiders. I don’t think thats too much to ask for in Candlestick Park. Or is it.

    Go Niners!

  257. Shoko October 17, 2010 10:42 am

Hmm, sorry for the double post (again). Seems my internet connection is lagging.

  258. bb October 17, 2010 10:48 am

kazz, i share your feelings about an “OVERRATED” chant. We should have done it. Would have been nice to kick a wolf when their down, let them hear it and drive their head into the fast turf.

When Georgia did it to us at the sugar bowl i felt so depressed and sad. Would have loved to make Nevada feel the same.

Fresno State and Nevada can go suck in the Mountain West. To any Bulldog or Wolfpack fan…karma is a MF Bitch.

  259. protector October 17, 2010 10:49 am

    Redzone on 176,

I totally agree with you. Rather than just having the “Good Hands” players on the field to handle onside kicks, they also need to be the “Fast Minds” players because once it goes 10 yards, it’s up for grabs. What I’d like UH to try the next time Hawaii attempts an onside kick is to try to bloop it or pooch it OVER the guys lined up and to have maybe Sampson & Tuliau just sprint past or through the group to see if they can come up with it.

  260. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 17, 2010 10:49 am

    repost:

    Whoohoo to the WIN!

The Defense was swarming like a nest full of pissed off hornets and in the 1st half they looked like something out of the Big 10 when stopping the run. Seriously, BEST defensive showing I have seen in the past several years. Just AWESOME!

Of course me being the cautious optimist I must say that our SPECIAL TEAMS were indeed a bit “Special” *cough, cough* tonight. For the most part this season our special teams have been pretty decent, maybe its just an anomaly that we may have underperformed at times tonight.

I was disappointed with the onside kick and how we handled that. Our hands unit looked lost when the ball passed the 10 yard buffer…They didn’t seem to know what, where, who should catch the ball.

Also after the TD in the 4th Q when we went up 27-14…Can anyone explain why we didn’t go for the 2 pt conversion to get us to 28?…I mean the 1 point does what exactly…26 if we didn’t convert for 2 is just the same as 27 right?…It turns it into a 2 possession game for Nevada to win, while a 2pt conversion would have meant a 2 possession game to tie. It’s these “tiny” things that will come back to bite us in the butt, but shouldn’t be an issue because its just a common sense thing to me at least. Then again I don’t get paid the big bucks so who am I to say right? haha.

Overall I loved the win and glad we sent the Pack, packin. And Coach Mack is hilarious…”They want to leave us, so they are the enemy…” Luv ya Coach Mack! =)

Hugh win … da D came through … wooooo hoooooo … still rockin

    Go Warriors!!!

  264. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 11:04 am

Forgot to mention this earlier –

I don’t know if the UNR secondary is that bad, but their tackling was sure suspect. You have to be impressed with the down-field blocking by the Warrior receiver corp. Terrific! 😀 Kudos to Coach Mouse, but more so to the players themselves. That is really unselfish TEAM play that goes unnoticed and is not appreciated by many. 🙂

  265. protector October 17, 2010 11:05 am

Now that the O is clicking, the only really disturbing tendency is that Bryant seems to automatically be going to Pilares even when double & triple covered. There were a number of times last night when Pollard didn’t have any player within 8 yards of him but Moniz ended up overthrowing a double-covered Pilares. A number of other times, Salas only had single coverage on him. Yes, I know that Greg caught more passes in the game but I’m pretty sure Moniz attempted to throw the ball at Pilares. But Rolo is sharp, so I’m hoping he’s picking up on this. At this point it’s just fine-tuning and perhaps it’s a tendency for every QB to have a favorite target. Remember the game where Pilares caught an astounding 18 passes. Well, he also dropped at least 3. In that same game, Greg had 8 less receptions, but only had 20 less yards; that’s efficiency. Every one of Greg’s catches looks like a clip from others’ highlight reels.

  266. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 11:06 am

Who dat “brew” person you guys referring to? 😐 Punk – I think! 🙄

  267. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 11:09 am

Thanks to protector for reminding me. Would someone please teach Mo to look-off his primary receiver more often! That hit on 21 behind the line of scrimmage was brutal. 😐

  268. cocobean October 17, 2010 11:16 am

UH played it safe with 5 1/2 minutes left to play. They took the almost automatic point rather than gamble for the two. There were too many possibilities that could play out that they didn’t want to leave even a single point off the board.

My thinking was even if NV scored a UH FG would make it a two possession game again.

Mack probably looked at his “when to go for two chart” he has for those situations.

  269. Hawaiianbod October 17, 2010 11:17 am

Shoko – although i like you and your comments, i have to say that there’s no other team then da RAIDERS….RAIDER NATION, BABEEE!!!

  270. LizKauai (iPad) October 17, 2010 11:17 am

Re chanting- there was a new group of younger fans with us in Poipu last night and we were tearing it up on the D-Fence and other chants. We started rolling when they started up the BCS! bCS!

  271. Ronnie October 17, 2010 11:18 am

    Question:

Was the coyote QB’s throw that was picked in the endzone by Torres the same type of throw (running to the left & throwing to the right) that Moniz made to Salas for a 37 yd gain?

  272. chawan_cut October 17, 2010 11:19 am

updated my UH schedule of opponent’s schedules:

  274. Midnight October 17, 2010 11:20 am

Hi Brew808, nice to see you posting again. Missed your imaginative and artistic compositions! The Warriors played a terrific game, all in all.

    Next! Go Warriors!

  275. Midnight October 17, 2010 11:21 am

    Nice to see Colt again.

  276. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 17, 2010 11:26 am

    cocobean,

i gotta disagree with you. i think nevada would be aggressive (as proven with their onside kick)…so you cant assume that we will get the ball back and drive down for 3pts…

If you make it a 2TD lead, then it forces Nevada to do the onside PLUS the additional touchdown to just Tie not win the game….Even if we went for the 2 and didn’t convert we would be in the same position as making the additional 1 pt…because all Nevada would need is a TD and point after to win.

    To me its pretty straightforward.

  277. curveball October 17, 2010 11:29 am

    Bess…5 receptions and 1 TD…..

  278. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 11:31 am

Before this season started, I was resolved to be happy if our Warriors finished the regular season with an 8-5 record… But after the USC game, I started thinking 9-4… then after Army, 10-3… but following Colorado… 9-4… and here we are .. after Nevada.. I’m thinking no less than 10-3 again …. possible 11 – 2, if they can shore up the punt and kick off, kicking team’s tackling.

    Warrior football! Awesome stuff!

  279. A-House October 17, 2010 11:33 am

Most memorable moments last night were:

#1. Kainoa LaCount’s 2 hand to the chest wack of #55 which literally lifted him up and pushed him back 2-3 yards.

#2. The sorry ass attitude and arrogrance of Ault for leaving the field after the game and not going over to talk with Coach Mack. Nearly 95% of the team and coaches went direct to the lockers. To his credit, #55 stayed back and was congratulating the Hawaii players.

Ault’s arrogrance in a direct reflection of Reno’s President and Athletic Director! Always starts from the top.

  280. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 11:37 am

As I mentioned before (IMHO), Nevada #10 is a tremendous athlete – but marginal QB skills. The way to defend him has always been to stop the run game, contain his bootlegs, and force him to pass. Of course, the NFL might have a different opinion…. 🙄

  281. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 11:39 am

    H-bod – 🙄 and here I liked you…. 😥

Really glad to “see” you. How’s your son doing? 🙂

  282. expat October 17, 2010 11:43 am

I don’t think that 2008 was all that bad of a season. There were two games that should have been won but weren’t — San Jose State and Utah State. They still went to a bowl game. They almost held on to beat Cincinnati which won its BCS conference. Losing to Florida and Oregon State away is no shame — ditto with Boise State. I wish they would have beaten Notre Dame, but just did not happen.

They tied for 2nd in the WAC I believe as well. Considering how many players were lost, including Graunke, it really was not that bad.

  283. MattO October 17, 2010 11:43 am

Didn’t know Ault left without talking to Mack. Geez, what a sour grape. Given that AND Colin’s quote dissing Hawaii’s D, maaaan, just makes the win that much sweeter. Way to go Warriors – keep it up!!!

  284. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 11:43 am

Oh duh…. now I realize #273 was a rhetorical question/statement since Ronnie knows everything! 😀

  285. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 11:48 am

Lost (never aired) episode of Reno-911 had a “Code blue” (heart attack) emergency call at UNR. The sheriffs arrive just as the EMTs are leaving the scene with their gear unused. They say, “False alarm – it was only the head coach!” 😈

  286. expat October 17, 2010 11:50 am

That Utah State game in 2008 is what the Warriors should think a lot about this week because that left a very bitter taste. I think that was the last time a UH returner *almost* returned a kick — Malcolm Lane fumbling on the 5 after a nice return.

Borel is a threat and the Warriors should go in thinking that they have something to prove after what happened two years ago.

  287. expat October 17, 2010 11:54 am

LaTech is starting to look dangerous. I am glad we had them on the front end rather than the back of the schedule. They have a chance to play for a bowl game against Nevada in Reno to finish off their regular season. Fresno might run into some trouble in Ruston.

  288. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 11:57 am

USU #12 is a better passer than Nevada #10. Did the D have any sacks last night?

  289. Bigislandkurt October 17, 2010 11:58 am

    Cool Breeze Moniz.

It does have a ring to it yeh?

    BIK

  290. expat October 17, 2010 12:03 pm

Nevada is a good team. Hawaii D just played lights out. If it wasn’t for the short fields that Nevada got I think they would have had a much harder time. Nevada had no problem really moving the ball when they were forced to pass late in the game. Odd that they couldn’t really run but were able to get the passing game going.

Their D did a great job stopping the Warrior offense most of the time. For as many turnovers as the Hawaii D forced it is impressive that Nevada only gave up 27 pts. Our offense is going to have to do a better job converting turnovers into points going forward.

Special teams is still agonizing at times. But, nothing blocked, some good returns, and nothing actually run back for a score. In the end Nevada at least had to work for their points. I think Mack is right in not bailing just yet on Tormey.

  291. whitey October 17, 2010 12:06 pm

Congratulations to da Warriors!!!!! Well done, take a bow, enjoy the day!!!!!

  292. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 12:06 pm

Sadly, other than UH, the raisins are the only WAC team with an OC game left (vs. Illinois). Everyone else only has WAC opponents remaining. So, if the good guys keep racking up W‘s, we no care if the other guys pound on each other! 😈

  293. whitey October 17, 2010 12:09 pm

so far so good on my request for each of the last two games. Basic tackling, then improvement and da warriors are doing a good job. there is still room for improvement, expecially in the open field, so request is an upgrade of the two previous one, tackle with purpose, not showmanship, pound em, wrap and drive the opponent’s legs, and continue the gang tackling. Go Warriors!!!!!

  294. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 12:12 pm

    expat..

I’m glad all three are behind us! Nevada, Fresno, and La Tech… phew…

The rest are much more doable while hopefully giving a little more time for the reserve players to some playing time under the lights until we face off with Boise. I’m hoping our slightly injured starters might get a little ‘healing’ time over the next two weeks before squaring off with the last deserter.

  295. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 12:14 pm

    expat,

Nevada can move the ball with their passing game, but their passing game is suspect to interceptions… and the two big ones that Hawaii got at the end of each half warranted that they didn’t do too much of that until absolutely necessary…

    Warriors’s Defense.. awesome.

  296. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 12:15 pm

This is more and more like the kind of Defense I expected out of Mack.

  297. whitey October 17, 2010 12:15 pm

i was kind of skeptical of coach davis rehiring, but he has been the lost jewel that da warriors needed on offense. he is the one who demands perfection from the receivers and gets on them if they screw up. he also is the one who makes rolo tick. without him this season could be very different on offense. to his credit, coach rolo is learning not only the offense, but what is required from the players to make it go. when jj left, the jugs was a forgotten training equipment and the results showed in the receivers the next two years. mouse comes on, brings and stresses the hands technique, work on the jugs, and now we are looking at a different set of receivers.

  298. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 12:18 pm

    whitey…

I hope they have been updating their training guides for every position on the team. Including off season practice and what kinds of equipment to use.

  299. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 12:18 pm

    BTW…

What did Benson have to say about this win?

  300. whitey October 17, 2010 12:20 pm

first 3 games this year, da warriors d was playing the waiting game and it really killed them in the 2nd half of the first 3 games. i believe that coach mc had a direct hand in changing the d to the attacking one he had at miami and other schools, then made sure coach aranda understood how to make it go. listening to aranda’s comments about not making adjustments tells me that he has not truly grasped the full concept of the d, but is making progress with coach mc as his tutor.

  301. whitey October 17, 2010 12:24 pm

another unsung coach is coach shaw. what he has done to teach and make sure his o line does things correctly is beyond words. he has taken players with some/or non prior game experience and transformed them into one of the best o line with no fanfare. he truly is one that we need to keep. now, if he can recruit some of the upper midwest linemen that would truly be frosting on the cake.

  302. whitey October 17, 2010 12:26 pm

one who deserves a standing ovation is coach tommy h. my hats off to you, you have done a super job with the team and i can see a very bright future for uh with you there. thank you coach tommy.

  303. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 17, 2010 12:26 pm

    Benson prolly said

“we are reviewing all aspects of the win and actively pursuing a comment at this time that will strengthen the conference in the national football landscape”

  304. whitey October 17, 2010 12:28 pm

and lastly to coach cal. watching your lb crew improve and grow is a credit to you. this crew has a chance to be one of the best.

  305. whitey October 17, 2010 12:31 pm

so to our senior coaches, you have more knowledge than most, you are willing to share that knowledge with other coaches, you understand your coaching position, and you all make the team go. For that, many, many, thank yous’ for being at UH.

  306. Hawaiianbod October 17, 2010 12:37 pm

Howzt Brew!…haha. I knew that statement would ilicit a response from a 49er fan. Nah, i know my team sucks…they already won their one game quota for the entre season. heheh

My son is doing great. Started high school last month and returning to be a ‘normal’ teenager. Thanks for askng!

  312. Matt October 17, 2010 12:54 pm

    whitey,

Cal Lee coaches the Defensive Ends now. Coach Aranda coaches the linebackers. UH needs to update the coaches bios on their websites. They haven’t included any of the changes from last offseason.

  313. Pride. October 17, 2010 12:59 pm

I thought that Coach Ault actually attempted to shake hands with Coach Mack. He was aggressively searching for coach Mack on the field but left when he saw that Coach Mack was already in an interview with the WAC sports network. I thought that Coach Mack should have shaken hands with coach Ault first before starting the interview. I was a little disappointed in Coach Mack.

  314. Lava October 17, 2010 1:00 pm

Singing up Rolo and Aranda is a no-brainer. And since Jimmy D is a sharp guy, I think this gets done.

BTW – I count the onside kickoff as a TO too, so 4:2 in my book. 😐

  320. Pride. October 17, 2010 1:04 pm

Defense doing great against the run. I like to see the defense hold teams to 140 yards rushing or less.

    134 – Nevada

    104 – Fresno State

    127 – La Tech

    52 – CSU

    252 – Colorado

    250 – Army

    246 – USC

  321. βρεω808 October 17, 2010 1:05 pm

Nevada’s best play was the toss to the runningback sneaking out of the backfield. It worked for UH too. I just would like to see more of it.

  326. NorthShoreFan October 17, 2010 1:23 pm

    Guud morning Tsaikos!….

SWEET!….no mo voice today….used it up last night…

    Observations..

    1. “There was nothing Hawaii did tonight to stop us,” said Kaepernick, the school’s all-time leader in total offense. “Just lack of execution (on our part), we didn’t play like ourselves tonight.”

Yes.. mr qb…you was on the line of scrimmage all by yourself. Neva get 12 odda guys across from you. (12 guys…tonight the 12th guy showed up)

So go donkey kick yourself in the arse and keep thinking the odda guys had nothing to do wih your ineptness last night.

    2. O and the Dline did a great job. Still need to get d-backfield up to snuff…work in progress but improvements each week. By bsu, we be ready to rumble and shake the house up.

    3. Da seven guys in da box did a fantastic job. Got lots of replacements and neva miss da beat. Some good for next year.

    4. Moch is a great player. Had my doubts and now appreciated that I got to see him play.

    5. Beer needs to be removed from the stadium. Most fans were very respectful but had on donkey shouting expletives and gestures to someone for a period of time. Kids around us were in “awe”.

Towards the end of the game i the blue section, southside..men in blue had to go calm a situation..suspecting too much beer..no can handle.

    6. T-gate was some goooood. Had my share of b-pudding with sauce, some tasty hekka, assorted grilled animals and da saimin wen hit da spot afta da game.

    7. Afta awaking to a super fantastic day today…noticed…no mo da cooler I wen take to da T-gate. (blue/white..name “Sheila” on top da front door)

If anyone wen pick up…me and my patnah will be at the WSS this Tuesday for the Na Wahine softball double header. Would appreciate safe return…(it doubles as my patnah’s fishing cooler)

Anyhooo….WARRIORS!…Time to focus on next week…GO WARRIORS!!!!

ps…uhfan808…mahalos fo da vid of the Warriors doing the pregame Haka…study da moves and at da next T-gate, you can teach errybody da moves!… including da fans/t-gaters from down under! would be a really great thing for them to take home yeah???)

errybody have one good one today….somehow cannot get dis stupid smile off my face!!!!

    lattas…

  327. NorthShoreFan October 17, 2010 1:27 pm

BTW….Pride…maybe you have da ansa fo dis…

On the onside kickoff, da ball neva touch da ground. Can da receiver call for a “Fair Catch”?

Can they do it on a regular kick off?

    Mahalos in advance

  328. whitey October 17, 2010 1:27 pm

maybe not to important, but nevada had a flight to catch, but don’t know what time. players need to change, equipment needs to be packed, then everything transported to the airport, so they may have been on a time schedule. same for da warriors when on the mainland.

  329. Are you guys EFFING serious??? Gotta be F******* something???

Damnit this just really pisses me off???

On Coach Mack for what???????? Doing an interview as he was pulled aside first?????????????

HOW ABOUT WHEN AULT TRIED TO WALK AWAY FROM THAT SAME WAC SPORTS NETWORK FEMALE REPORTER WHILE WALKING TO LOCKER ROOM FOR THE HALF.

GODDAMNIT I GET IT COACH MACK AIN’T JUNE JONES…. BLAH BLAH BLAH

    EFFING UNBELIEVEABLE!!!

    “all on Mack”???

    FOR WHAT????????????????????????????????????????

I’m done for the day goodbye!

  330. Hawaiianbod October 17, 2010 1:28 pm

WOO HOO da Cowgirls loss!!! sorry Rob25….i guess they won’t be playin in the Super Bowl, which wll be played in their own stadium. heheh.

As far as giving anyone a LONG TERM contract. FORGET IT!

We should be making these Coordinators prove their worth.

I promise no schools are banging down our doors, for our Coaches.

So they beat Fresno and Nevada. Well we could have beaten USC

if we could score from the RED ZONE! But we did not. And the loss

at Colorado, well shows you…we need more team support with money

so kids are not on the road for 13 days. School work, they are students first then

athletes. Folks try showing up to the games! And support your team. It makes Hawaii

look bad on the mainland when there are lots of empty seats. And can we not go to the

HAWAII BOWL! How about winning and getting to the HOLIDAY BOWL so Hawaii can have more

    NATIONAL EXPOSURE! Sheesh…..

Coach Mack got grabbed by the interviewer with camera man in tow so what could he do? Ault could have waited. He could have shook hands with the UH players or other coaches in the interim. But that would not be grumpy.

Nevada had a charter plane at the airport waiting for them, so they theoretically had all the time in world to pack up their stuff post-game.

Looks like they left a little after 11pm on a non-stop charter flight straight back to Reno, per this flight track:

Just guessing the book you are referring to is:

” DEATH TO THE BCS “

  340. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 1:42 pm

Coach Ault could have just gone up, said, “Excuse me Coach, but we’ve got a plane to catch. Great game,” and shook his hand in front of the media. Would have been great PR for himself. Even Colt’s dad interrupted Colt in an on camera interview once… and reminded him of an interception after a win. So we know, it’s not impossible or uncommon.

  342. Matt October 17, 2010 1:46 pm

    PolyMom,

The Holiday Bowl pits a team from the Pac-10 against a team from the Big 12. The WAC bowl games are the Humanitarian Bowl, Hawaii Bowl, Poinsettia Bowl, and New Mexico Bowl. Back in 1992 when we played in the Holiday Bowl, the WAC used to have a tie-in with them. That isn’t the case anymore. Unless we are in a BCS game, Hawaii is obligated to play in the Hawaii Bowl if we are bowl eligible. No way we make it into a BCS bowl this year, even if we win the rest of our games.

  343. Matt October 17, 2010 1:46 pm

I just saw something on Fox that said that Davone Bess just signed a new 4-year deal that makes him the highest paid slot receiver in the NFL. Alright Davone! Congrats!

  344. Hawaiianbod October 17, 2010 1:47 pm

the only holiday bowl UH will ever participant in is the Hawaii Bowl (if not selected for a BCS bowl). The Hawaii Bowl was created for UH. Without it, no other bowl would invite UH, well, except for the Leeward Bowl. heheh

  375. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 2:47 pm

#334… PolyMom… Our coaching staff has caught on to what needs to be done. If allowed to stay together for an extended period, we can develop into a pretty tough program. Lots of kids commit to schools because of the coaches. For those who have a shot at the next level, certain coaches have a reputation of preparing kids for that. Coach Shaw is a perfect example of this.

As far as being on the road and school work. This is also part of being a student athlete and understanding the additional sacrifices they must make, as well as the standards they must achieve. Look at our Wahine Softball team. They spent forever on the road this past season. When it came down to it, they had tutors with them to help with taking finals while on the road.

    Concerning Bowl games…

The Humanitarian Bowl will usually host the WAC champion, unless the WAC chmpion is invited to a BCS bowl.

The Hawaii Bowl will usually host Hawaii, unless Hawaii is invited to a BCS bowl. But, I don’t know if Hawaii is under contractual obligation to go to the Hawaii Bowl if it is the conference champion and does not go to a BCS bowl.

Common sense would dictate that Boise State would go to their own bowl game in their own stadium for the biggest draw on attendance, as long as they aren’t BCS-bowl bound.

Similarly, Hawaii would be the most logical choice for the Hawaii Bowl if not BCS bowl bound.

  388. PolyMom October 17, 2010 3:12 pm

@MATT, thanks for the info. I just want to the boys to get a game on the mainland!

It is great for exposure. We told our ESPN folks to tune in…or DVR especially on the east

coast as Hawaii games starts at 11:30PM and so hard to stay up until 2AM. But why we keep

playing the Hawaii Bowl???? Also it is good for the state and the fans!! Folks never show up anyway at

the Hawaii Bowl. If I am not mistaken I understand we can go to the Emerald Bowl if no PAC 10 team

qualifies???? Is that right? All I know, is making decisions where kids should play ball is very hard.

And we are in the thick of it right now!

  389. kev-1 October 17, 2010 3:21 pm

To everyone that was hating on ESPN’s Andrea Adelson last week for picking Nevada over Hawaii . . .

“4. Hawaii is for real. Start paying attention to the team on the islands, because it is starting to resemble some of those high-flying Warriors teams we have come to know. Hawaii upset No. 19 Nevada 27-21 late Saturday night in a game that ended past 2:30 a.m. EDT, but it was well worth it if you stayed up and watched. Nevada was able to slow down Hawaii in the second half, but Bryant Moniz came up with the big plays when he needed to and outplayed Colin Kaepernick. The outcome may have been different had Kaepernick not fumbled the ball out of the end zone in the third quarter down 17-0. But now the Warriors have won four straight and have emerged as the top challenger to the Broncos in the WAC.”

QUESTION: What does everyone think Hawaii’s chances are at accepting an invite from another bowl game other than the Hawaii bowl, as one of ESPN’s analysts predicts? I say none, but it would be intersting should we be invited by another bowl.

  390. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 3:22 pm

    PolyMom…

If Hawaii goes independent, it will need the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl for recruiting purposes and marketing purposes. So, keeping it viable is very, very important. The Hawaii Bowl isn’t very popular when Hawaii isn’t in it because Hawaii has very little passion for the other teams that might come to play in it. It’s pretty sad, but that’s just the way Hawaii fans are. Money is tight. There is only so much entertainment kala… When Hawaii isn’t in the bowl .. many probably think it’s a good time to spend the money elsewhere or save it for the next year. In any other bowl besides a BCS bowl, Hawaii would probably lose money.

I believe the WAC will lose the Humanitarian bowl after this season because it goes with Boise.

  391. Matt October 17, 2010 3:22 pm

Hope Davone remembers the UH Warriors now that he is going to be making millions.

  392. Hawaiianbod October 17, 2010 3:22 pm

AD – thnx for the info on Coach (F)ault. I was relying on comments made earler…t.sigh

  393. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 3:23 pm

Boy last season at this time we were wondering if we would have a chance at going to a bowl game. This season we are wondering if we have a chance at beating Boise at Boise and few if any are really worried about the Warrior’s bowl game prospective.

  394. PolyMom October 17, 2010 3:24 pm

@Michigan Warrior I agree about the kids being on the road. But to miss school…and lets face it, our kids are STUDENT ATHLETES! It is very important when I heard the football team had only one tutor for all of the boys on road games…they need more funding. And when I read somewhere that Moniz cousins were driving from CALI to deliver a computer to VEGAS…are you kidding me???? Yes I have to say that the Wahine Softball team when they get to play off games yes long time away from school. But to be really honest Michigan Warrior, it is not like my kid…is a rocket scientist, LOL! Sorry HON. But the GPR does look good. But they have not showed the numbers on how many of the kids have learning disabilities? NCAA stats on kids who play D1 Football have high rates of kids with learning disabilities. Very few kids make the pros. So I am more interested in education for all of them to graduate and be productive citizens in their communities. Just an opinion of a Poly Mom who wants the best for the kids!

  395. Ralph October 17, 2010 3:28 pm

Kazz our posts was in reference to all the posts dissing Ault for heading directly to the locker room. Not true, he looked for Mac, AD confirmed that he did shake Mac’s hand, and true, Mac wasn’t looking for Ault because he chose to do the interview. Credit Ault for seeking him out and shaking his hands. Disliking Ault and making up unsubstantiated innuendos is as bad as a sulking coach after losing the football game or sour grapes quarterback on the losing end of a football game.

  396. PolyMom October 17, 2010 3:32 pm

@madeinhawaii….yes I would love to see the Hawaii team play at the Humana Bowl!!! I buy tickets for the Hawaii Bowl even though we do not live there, just to help fill the seats. Hawaii football fans need to appreciate their own bowl games. And to have the opportunity to see other teams is incredible! WOW last years game was great when SMU kicked the hell out of Nevada. Did anyone not see that game???? It was FANTASTIC!

I hope Hawaii can get into a conference. We are like the STEP CHILD of American football. I was thinking of getting a petition to the NCAA to include Hawaii since no one really wants to play us due to cost, distance. They need to make a waiver about the 48 hour rule. If that could happen, things might change. Hard for the east cost to come over and play with the time difference. Heck, one friend of ours who has a kid on USC team they were saying how tired they were….I called him a panty, LOL!

Unreal for that many guys on the road to have only one tutor, unless the coaches pick up some of the slack while they travel. Don’t they have study sessions on the road?

As I’ve mentioned before, one of my cousin’s daughters plays for Wahine Softball. Officially, she’d be my cousin too. But, with the way Hawaii and age goes, she could address me as Uncle, while my younger brothers might be called Cousin… she’s a year older than my oldest daughter. Go figure.

  408. Matt October 17, 2010 4:01 pm

    PolyMom,

You’re welcome. I think we are obligated by contract to play in the Hawaii Bowl if bowl eligible and not going to a BCS game. If not, better exposure is always good. I was mistaken earlier. The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (formerly known as the Emerald Bowl) does get a WAC team this year and in the 2013 season. The Poinsettia Bowl doesn’t get a WAC team those two years. By the way, I would love for the Warriors to play in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl since I live in the Bay area.

For a WAC team to play in a game outside of their normal four tie-ins, I think the WAC has to cover all of it’s normal bowls first. If Boise makes it into a BCS game, the WAC would need 6 bowl eligible teams to accept an invitation outside of our normal four. If Boise loses and doesn’t make a BCS game, we still need 5 bowl eligible teams. It’s possible this year if LA Tech and Idaho are bowl eligible. However, the only way that happens is if they beat some of the higher ranking teams in the WAC standings.

By the way, I completely agree that we need more than one tutor when on the road. Education is more important than athletics. That’s why Student comes before Athlete in Student Athlete.

  409. Kaimuki Kid October 17, 2010 4:07 pm

Most of the Nevada players did go straight to the locker room including “Hawaii didn’t do anything special on Defense.” Mr Hollywood QB aka Mutant Stork! To bad we couldn’t hit himharder. The defense did a really good job of stuffing the running lanes and I think that Mr. Taua will be sporting a few owies and black and blues today courtesy of our revived D.E.F.E.N.S.E.

Someone should consider taking his 95 mph fastball and change sports, didn’t look to accurate last night.

I was wondering why the Zebras didn’t warn Reno’s staff from encroaching on to the field, they practically parked on the playing field the entire second half. Mr. Manju face (Ault) was almost as entertaining as Barry Switzer( Face turning a deep sahde of purple when Rafael Cherry threw the go ahead score in the 4th quarter against Oklahoma those many years ago. I believe 1984) I thought he was going to have stroke right on the sideline… Very satisfying win… Ok one snap and clear

    I wonder,

Football is a conservative game for the most part. Your scenario is only one of the many possibilities. Coaches for the most part are going to play it safe with the amount of time left.

There was nothing wrong with the decision. You can play devil’s advocate for going for two but given the same situation(same amount of time left) most coaches, college and pro would go for one, my opinion.

    @#292, expat

“Their D did a great job stopping the Warrior offense most of the time. For as many turnovers as the Hawaii D forced it is impressive that Nevada only gave up 27 pts. Our offense is going to have to do a better job converting turnovers into points going forward.”

expat, I couldn’t agree with you more. I was nervous about only having 17 pts. for the 1st half. We should have had a minimum of 20. Then when the Hawai’i “O” struggled in the 3rd quarter and the beginning of the 4th, with Nevada scoring, I got really nervous. Hopefully the team can play a complete game from here on out.

Sorry, but when a team struggles but comes close to pulling out a win, I have respect for them. Even if it is a team that is deserting the WAC. I just couldn’t go along with the “over-rated” chant. But if people wanted to do it, hey, be my guest. 🙂

  416. PolyMom October 17, 2010 4:35 pm

In a month or two or by the end of November I will be happy to let you know where he has chosen. I want him to have the freedom, and I hope you can respect his freedom to decide. And where ever he attends college I know his Hawaii family will be cheering him on!!!! Just a few more weeks. It is very hard for these young men to decide where they should attend and play football. But I can promise you this…those who do know our boy on these threads…LOVE HIM! He can play two sides of the line. And he has 5 years to play. Not a JC College transfer. He is D1 ready to GO!!! And with extensive training at top notch camps, he will not disappoint the Hawaii fans!!!!

    cocobean,

The chart that Mack and many other coaches use says to go for two when leading by 12.

    http://www.theredzone.org/Features/TwoPointConversionChart.aspx

I have to disagree and say that most coaches would have gone for the two point conversion in that situation.

If you want to get more complicated, you can use a chart like this:

    http://www.footballcommentary.com/twoptchart.htm

When we scored that TD, there was 5:27 left in the game. According to that chart, we should have gone for two if we thought we had a better than 9% chance of converting. According to that same website, going for two is successful about 40% of the time.

  418. TorresFan October 17, 2010 4:38 pm

FYI: The fan voting for the Davey O’Brien award only counts for 5% of the total voting per round. So even if Mo doesn’t wind up in the fan’s top 16 of this round he can still advance. However, keep on voting as every little bit helps.

  419. Matt October 17, 2010 4:39 pm

The guy that voted for the Warriors was John Werner from the Waco Tribune-Herald in Waco, Texas. That loser Jon Wilner will never vote for the Warriors for anything. In fact, I would bet that he picks SJSU to beat the Warriors. Of course, he is also listed as an extreme voter in the link that ST provides.

  420. PolyMom October 17, 2010 4:41 pm

@Matt, mahalo for understanding our concerns. As parents it is about being a student first then an athlete. Maybe Na Koa should look into this matter with more tutors on long road games. Just think one tutor, hell my kid would use that one tutor the entire time. LOL!!! If that happens we might have to send a tutor with him and computers ect. Did you read that story when Moniz cousins had to deliver a computer? I was a little surprised they do not have more study hall or entertainment while on the road. I can see my husband having to travel with the kid to get the homework caught up. When you have a LD you need more time to study. And many of these good football players have LD’s and need more help to be a successful student.

The story I read was that Moniz’s cousins were already coming to Las Vegas on business. They brought him a new computer because it was cheaper on the mainland and to save him the shipping cost.

  425. Shoko October 17, 2010 4:59 pm

Interesting, I wasn’t aware that Hawaii, should they be bowl eligible, was mandated to play in the Hawaii Bowl. Yet, as one poster mentioned, ESPN Mark Schlabach has Hawaii in the Fraft Fight Hunger Bowl and Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl. I always thought it was the same with the Humanitarian Bowl (aka Toilet Bowl) where Idaho or Boise State had in-state-tie-ins should they be bowl eligible, but do not have to play in it. Good example would be the 2008 Broncos played in the Poisettia Bowl against TCU and Nevada played Maryland in the Toilet…errr, Humanitarian Bowl.

  426. Mad Dog October 17, 2010 5:02 pm

I’m only reading the early entries of today’s blog, but excuse me if my question has already been addressed. Would someone please explain the rules of an onside kick? It seemed that Nevada’s final kick off did not touch the ground. Instead it was just booted short and high. Doesn’t that mean that the kicking team must allow the receiving team a chance to catch the ball? If not, can the receiving team call for a fair catch and thus not allow the kicking team a chance to catch the ball?

  427. BigHiloFan2 October 17, 2010 5:07 pm

    Coach Mack

There have been times when you have exasperated me. I’ve been down at times because, in those moments, I thought we could have had a better representative to head Hawaii’s team.

And then you come up with one of those gems, a moment of clarity, a crisp and precise declaration that is all Hawaii.

The comment “…so they are the enemy…” made me say to myself, all is right in Hawaii nei. 😀 we got a coach!

thanks coach Mack for a wonderful evening and a wonderful day after.

    Go Warriors!

  430. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:08 pm

Moniz, or any other QB, for that matter, can only advance if he’s on the Selection Committee’s list of 16 Finalists. So, it would be in our (and his) best interest if we can move him as close to the top 16 of the first round as possible.

    Of the QB’s above Moniz…

Houston’s David Piland inherited votes from two prior QB’s. He has only started the last two games, and they lost both games.

Texas A&M’s (3-3) Jerrod Johnson won against weak teams, and has 14 TD’s to 9 INT’s.

    NC State’s (5-2) Russell Wilson is in a similar situation… weaker teams… 18 TD’s, 9 INT’s.

    East Carolina’s (4-2) Dominique Davis… same… weaker teams… 16 TD’s, 9INT’s.

    Washington’s (3-3) Jake Locker had some really ugly losses (4/20-71tds, 1TD, 2INT v.NEB)

    The list goes on…

On the other hand, Moniz leads the nation in passing and passing offense, has a decent QB rating of 162.54, with 21 TD’s and only 4 picks. He also has a rushing TD, and his team is now atop his conference, having just knocked off a ranked opponent.

  431. PolyMom October 17, 2010 5:09 pm

MATT, mahalo for the information. That is why you can never BELIEVE everything you read. Especially online. But I would like to say this, you are all very nice and dedicated fans. Better then going to the USC blogs where they are smacking the hell out of each other. I would be crying if I have to read them smacking my kid day in and day out. They are hostile fans. Hawaii could have beat USC when they were there. We had a couple of times in the red zone and could not connect. Had Hawaii beaten USC that would have put Hawaii in the news from week one. What are your thoughts on the Coaches and program in general? You seem to know alot about the system.

  432. Shoko October 17, 2010 5:11 pm

Da problem with the Warriors being the top WAC contenders in defeating Boise State is that they play on their infamous Blue turf. The Broncos have are 73-2 at home with losses coming from Boston College and Washington State. Thats a scary statistic. I still like Nevada’s chances, even though they have failed numerous times to unseat Boise’s dominanance, as the Wolf Pack will have home field advantage in from of s sellout crowd.

  433. Hawaiianbod October 17, 2010 5:11 pm

PolyMom – no problem. I thought your son was already in college. lol. Good luck and best wishes in whatever path he chooses.

  434. RainbowCliff October 17, 2010 5:12 pm

#428 Mad Dog: from my understanding the on side kick has to travel 10 yards. Kickers

who have to execute work on kicking the ball high in the air that will allow after ten yards traveled it’s offensive kicking team time to recover it as it is a MAD fight for both teams in controling the ball.

When this situation comes up the opposing team usually has their best hand athletes up

front as many on side kicks has high trajectary and spin that you need your “good hands”

athletes to field the ball and secure it’s posession.

There is no fair catch for an onside kick.

  435. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:15 pm

My understanding of it… if it’s kicked into the air (not having bounced on the ground), the receiving team can signal and call for a fair catch. If it hits the ground, it must travel ten yards before the kicking team can recover it, unless the receiving team touches it first… in which case, it becomes a live ball, and anyone can cover it.

  436. Shoko October 17, 2010 5:15 pm

Gee, my engrish is not too good today.

  437. BigHiloFan2 October 17, 2010 5:16 pm

    HTTR!

  438. Matt October 17, 2010 5:19 pm

    Mad Dog,

Yes you can call for a fair catch if the kick doesn’t touch the ground first. Here’s what I posted in #160:

    Matt:

    October 17th, 2010 at 9:00 am

I have since watched a HD replay of the game and I am almost positive that the ball bounced off the ground. It was just a perfect onside kick.

  439. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:20 pm

An onside kick can be fair caught if it has not hit the ground… meaning if it didn’t hit the ground and bounce up to travel the ten yards. And, the kicking team must not touch the ball until it has travelled ten yards, unless the receiving team has made contact with the ball first.

  440. Matt October 17, 2010 5:21 pm

My understanding of the onside kick rule is what Michigan Warrior posted in #437.

  441. Shoko October 17, 2010 5:23 pm

  442. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:26 pm

  446. Matt October 17, 2010 5:31 pm

    Michigan Warrior,

#444. We would need to have two kickers that could kick an onside kick first. I personally think they chose to kick to the side that Greg Salas wasn’t on.

  447. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:31 pm

    PolyMom… that’s what it’s all about… ‘ohana!!!

Hawaiianbod, aloha to you and yours!

  449. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 5:31 pm

The question then is … Did the onside kick actually hit the ground first?

My contention is that they should call for a fair catch anyway. Then the officials will have to determine if the ball hit the ground first. If it did.. then the kicking team has as much a right to try and catch it as the receiving team. If not… then a fair catch was warranted and an interference or encroachment penalty is called for. Or the ball should be downed where it was first touched and given to the receiving team.

The onside kick last night, didn’t look like it hit the ground at all.

  450. RainbowCliff October 17, 2010 5:31 pm

Matt and Michigan Warrior I stand to be corrected as I never saw a fair catch

for an on side kick as I have been watching football since child hood.

We learn everyday as I thank you both for the clarification !

    madeinhawaii,

See #440. I am almost certain that the ball hit the ground.

  454. Michigan Warrior October 17, 2010 5:35 pm

RC… it’s happened before… but usually on those pooch kicks where it goes just over the front line of the receiving team. That’s why, when attempting an onsides kick, teams will usually kick the ball into the ground and have it bounce up. Then, they have a front row of attackers who just try to blow people out of the area, followed by hands people right in back of them, trying to find and grab the ball.

Contrary to how some fans feel about opponents, I always have great respect for opponents. They work hard, they put in lots of time and effort and I applaud them for what they do. I expect my opponent to compete, I expect them to be competitive, I expect them to bite and scratch their way, every second of the game. I expect to play against our opponents best effort. I wouldn’t have it any other way. If they storm off the field angry about losing, if they say things that aren’t nice, that doesn’t hurt my feelings. All it says is that they wanted the win real bad. I applaud that. No sense come to town if it wasn’t REAL important for you to win. If the opponent are poor sports and poor losers, it doesn’t hurt me. As a matter of fact, I understand. It was important to them. then my victory is that much sweeter.

But again, I have respect for the opponent. They are always good. That’s why I want to beat them, because I respect that they bring their best efforts and I will beat them at their best. If they weren’t any good then it would be a waste of time to play them.

Hi brew! Actually, I was wondering because they looked the same to me, but when what’s his name was intercepted, the WAC guys were saying that “nobody can make that throw”. When Moniz completed his pass, all they talked about was how he was able to “use his feet” to get himself out of trouble and that Salas was there for the catch…

  467. Shoko October 17, 2010 6:18 pm

    HB,

Mahalo, I was just hoping we wouldn’t be the last defeated team standing behind Bills and Panthers. 🙂

    Ronnie,

That Moniz throw was a tough play. Look what happened to Kap when he tried it and Ault was all on him after the interception.

Anyway, calling it an early night. Saturday night was brutal. Cya tomorrow, Warriors fans!!

As for Mo – he’s very accurate and has a pretty quick release. #10 – can chuck the pigskin 65 yds – and it will be somewhere down there. The announcers were also babbling about the winds at Aloha. But do you remember the long pass to Pollard in 2Q? It was an incompletion, but only due to a terrific play by the DB. It was right on target! 🙂

    Poly Mom:

Most, if not all, of us who participate on this blog have a very special “ohana” feeling for all student athletes who chose to play for UH and I do not hesitate to thank the student – that goes for any sport. Some are very surprised that a fan will do this.

If your son should decide on UH, he will automatically become part of the “family” and be treated as such. For me, it does not matter where the student comes from, it matters when he/she chooses UH for academics/sports.

  477. OldDiver October 17, 2010 6:56 pm

This Saturday is Utah State’s homecoming game, which is usually reserved for the easiest game on the schedule. Sounds like no respect to me, and another reason for the Warriors to want to crush somebody.

  478. A-House October 17, 2010 6:59 pm

    On side kick rule:

Can the receiving team, after the ball is kicked, advance and hit/block the kicking team players so they have a smaller opportunity to get the ball? or, must they hold their ground to be blasted by the kicking team?

    How would you coach this?

I was sure the ball didn’t hit the ground when it was kicked, but Matt’s further analysis proved my makule eyes didn’t see everything correctly. It was a great onside kick. I’m glad I witnessed it. It’s just too bad we we had to be on the wrong side of the ball.

    Looking ahead:

    1) What are the needs in recruiting for the 2011 class? Who are all the grayshirts right now who will join the team in January?

    2) Who will be the heir apparent for departing slotbacks Salas and Pilares.

Ryan Henry and Dustin Blount are also seniors. We lose Bradley too. Pollard will be back as well as Darius Bright. Who else will be in the mix?

Do we need to recruit some receivers?

    3) Wouldn’t it be nice to get a QB who is 6’3″ to 6’6″ who has 4.3 to 4.4 speed and can throw. Seems that’s the in thing now w/ guys like Denard Robinson, Taylor Martinez, Camron Newton, and of course Kaepernick. These dual QBs are very skilled and are dangerous. Jake Locker is fast, but his throwing isn’t as good as some others. But, he’s projected to be a very high first round draft pick.

It must be very discouraging for the Fresno St. women’s volleybal program. Read that they are 0-48 against our Wahines. Maybe that’s why they wanted to leave for another conference. They are tired of losing to Hawaii.

  489. gigi-hawaii October 17, 2010 7:42 pm

  491. Derek October 17, 2010 8:13 pm

Check out CollegeFootballNews.com on the last CFN rankings. Hawaii is now up to #28. Interesting teams are #27 USC, #31 Nevada, #32 Arizona St., #33 UCLA, #35 Notre Dame, #36 Florida, #37 Oregon State, #38 Washngton, #45 Colorado. Below these teams are the likes to Georgia, Tennessee, Penn State, Pittsburgh, etc. Hard to believe. How times have changed even in one year. Nice recognition and something we can talk about, however, these things are likely to be temporary. A loss can drastically drop a team 10 to 25 spots in one week depending on the score and the opponent. Nonetheless, it is nice to see that our Warriors are getting some respect out there. All too often, Hawaii doesn’t see to get any respect and we are viewed by some people (like Craig James) that Hawaii only plays a lot of cupcakes. Hello! Playing USC tough, shutting out Colorado at halftime, beating Army on the road who has a winning record, and winning 3 straight conference games to a ranked team and teams that were projected to be above us, shows that the Warriors are getting better every week, and impressively I might add.

We need to continue to improve the special teams, run the ball a little better, and get the timely turnovers, and limit our mistakes. Credit the coaches and the players. Very nice job.

  492. Guy in the office October 17, 2010 8:16 pm

Re: 292: “For as many turnovers as the Hawaii D forced it is impressive that Nevada only gave up 27 pts.”

Disagree. Some perspective: First Kaepernick fumble led to UH touchdown. First Kaepernick interception came in end zone with 1:18 left in first half. Second Kaepernick fumble resulted in a touchback (bigger play by Paredes, to me, than Moniz-to-Salas, which was great). Final Kaepernick interception, of course, clinched the game. So Warriors really only had one scoring opportunity off the four turnovers and they scored a touchdown.

#466…not sure what the team’s travel plans are, but gradual acclimation is the key; along with good hydration, higher intake of carbs, lower intake of fats and an increase in iron. Not sure if they are allowed to take iron supplements, but it would be a great idea. I know when I ski Mauna Kea or anywhere in Colorado, acclimation and diet make a huge difference. Before the team played in Boulder, they stayed in Vegas which is only 2,000 ft. elevation. I think the rule of thumb is to adjust at 3,000 foot intervals for the best results.

  506. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 9:06 pm

We need to put a park and camp on Mount Kaala for our Warriors to condition at, it is also the highest spot on the island of oahu at 4025 feet.

Love to see the rankings jump for the Warriors. They have worked hard for it! They understand what it takes to win and believe in their own abilities now. We see many many players on this team who know how to step it up when its called for. This group of Warriors is special.

Speaking of NM State, their game versus Idaho is on espn3.com also. Hawai’i plays Idaho next week at Aloha Stadium.

No other WAC games are scheduled to be shown on espn3.

With this years team it started in the off season. They had the highest rate of participation in off season workouts ever. Tommy Heffernan did a great job of creating a workout program and motivated a lot of players to stick to it or even exceed it.

Hope this something that becomes a tradition with future teams.

    Aloha, Tsaikos!

    Great night at Aloha Stadium.

Watched the replay on K5 this morning and noticed how the folks who only follow the Warriors on PPV can’t sense the noise level that the crowd was putting out when Reno had the ball.

It was very loud almost all the time, and at some very critical moments, it was ungodly loud, like jet engine taking off loud. It felt like the return of the good times of the past, like Colt’s unbelievable 2007 games @Aloha stadium or the years when we smashed BYU!

That victory last night, if followed by more games played with similar effort and precision, will bring out the students and fill up the place like it was then.

So proud of this group of coaches and players, what they have accomplished and the way that they have improved each game.

    Go Warriors! Go Bows!

  518. tommui October 17, 2010 9:41 pm

Next year Brian Moniz will be a senior – but our most (all?) our receivers will be graduating.

utah state will not be an easy game. they have had two weeks to lick their wounds. it is tough to play in logan, utah. we have had our share of problems against them.

they gave oklahoma a real run for their money in the season opener and beat byu. here’s theri record.

    09/04/10 at #7 Oklahoma Norman, Okla. L, 31-24

09/11/10 vs. Idaho State Logan, Utah W, 38-17

09/18/10 vs. Fresno State* Logan, Utah L, 41-24

09/25/10 at San Diego State San Diego, Calif. L, 41-7

    10/01/10 vs. BYU Logan, Utah W, 31-16

10/09/10 at Louisiana Tech* Ruston, La. L, 24-6

we can’t think that if we just show up we will win. the great teams respect their opponents on every phase of the game and every play of the game. we need to keep up the the intensity every day.

  545. madeinhawaii October 17, 2010 11:40 pm

    Here’s a quote

“There was nothing Hawaii did tonight to stop us,” said Kaepernick, who had just 30 yards rushing on 11 carries and passed for just 159 yards (14-of-26). “It was just a lack of execution.”

Hawaii, though, seemed to execute its defensive game plan to perfection.

“The coaches told us Nevada’s O-line was the weak point,” Hawaii defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga told the Advertiser. “The ends did a great job of squeezing down and that left the (defensive tackles) one on one. All we had to do was beat our guy.”

Two of the Pack’s three touchdowns were gifts from its special teams.

    OVER RATED!…a true story.

sometime during last night’s game, a season ticket holder of many years starts chanting, “OVER RATED!”. repeatedly of course.

a lady (senior citizen type), two rows back, also a long time season ticket holder, yells to the younger guy chanting “OVER RATED!”,

    “HEY, WHAT YOU DOING??!!!”

“WHY YOU SAYING WE OVER RATED, SHUT UP AND SIT DOWN. STOP PUTTING DOWN OUR TEAM.”

young guy tries to explain his chanting was to berate nevada and not the warriors. but, she just doesn’t get it you see. so she keeps yelling at the guy. everyone within earshot are staring at the older lady thinking, i’ll bet, “WHOOOOOSSSSSHHHH!”.

…true story, happened last night i was told in section gg.

You should certainly think about working on expanding this website into a major authority in this market. You obviously have a grasp handle of the topics everybody is searching for on this site anyways and you could definitely even make a buck or two off of some advertising. I would explore following recent topics and raising the amount of write ups you put up and I guarantee you’d begin seeing some amazing traffic in the near future. Just a thought, good luck in whatever you do!

  674. Long Sleeved November 10, 2010 11:45 pm

After you have manipulated the material and bound it good and tight with rubber bands, let it sit for half a day. This will be hard, as a consequence you will want your lovely tie dyed shirt as soon as possible, but let it sit with the bindings for a while. Then give it another soak, for around an hour, in water mixed with certain soda ash. Soda ash is the lively ingredient in washing soda, that is obtainable at grocery stores. Various brands have added brighteners, which you don’t want. Arm and Hammer’s Washing Soda doesn’t have any additives. This ingredient adjustments the pH of the dye, allowing it to bind with the fabric permanently. Combine just one cup to at least one gallon of heat water before including the wrapped fabric. Now you will be ready to fill several squirt bottles with dye that is been mixed with water. If you’ve made a swirl pattern, you are able to begin with yellow in the middle and work out through the colours of the rainbow for a pretty effect. Or choose two to three colors and let them combine around their edges. Upon having your shirt covered in dye, let it sit for a while–another half day is enough. Then wash in your own washer with an excellent detergent. Voila!
