Seeing red

In training camp, one of the treats was to watch defenses try to figure a way to tackle running back Penitito Faalologo, who appears to be shorter and heavier than his listed dimensions of 5-11 and 250 pounds. Recruited as a linebacker, he moved to defensive end and then to offense.

Faalologo was held out of the first four games. Yesterday, he said he will redshirt this season.

Barring unexpected circumstances, with a third of the season in the books, the other prominent redshirts are offensive lineman Dejon Allen, R.J. Hollis and John Wa‘a, wide receiver Ammon Barker, tight end John Long, defensive ends David Manoa and Meffy Koloamatangi, linebacker Drake Miller, cornerbacks Barry Higdon and Keenan Ewaliko, and kicker/punter Jackson Dionne.

UH’s future looks good…. Redshirting is a normal for many true freshmen. Look at Boise St’s roster, the vast majority of their players have redshirted.

Also eligible for 2014 are Kory Rasmussen, Jeremy Castro, Quinton Pedroza (all very good talent). Castro and Pedroza were both highly rated coming out of high school, and Rasmussen was one of the highly sought after local recruits in 2012. We all know the top 10 local recruits tend to be underrated.

With all of my frustration of lack of progress I saw a spark this past weekend. Mostly though highlights cause it was 2 AM and I gave up…. yeah I know… But give me a break we were down 38! Anyway what I’m trying to say is I have been very tough on Coach Chow but if recruiting and red shirts go as well as expected, next year could be a good one. But that should be his last chance 😛

    Morning, Gang!

As long as we’re properly banking on the future, while still productive in the present…

For without a solid present, we may have no future for which we banked. Just saying…

And especially while redshirting, make sure you guys get your studies done! Don’t want to be held out when it’s (supposed to be) time to hit the field!

Work hard, study the playbook, hit the gym… but remember to have (good, clean, legal) fun too! Enjoy your college experience and represent us and yourselves well. No regrets!

    Go, Warriorz!

The government shutdown affects the service academy teams and could keep them off the field. It’s a remote possibility, but what happens if UH doesn’t play Navy and Army and finishes with just 10 games? Navy game is just a month away.

    Wes’side Warrior:

can make a tailgate with us in 2013?

  29. Wes'side Warrior October 1, 2013 7:46 am

    Aloha, A-House!

Should be able to. Still limping around, but at least I can move now. Before that, had problems with a dead alternator that has been replaced, finally. Also got family parties thrown in on weekends that cut into my UH time. As far as I know, the only thing coming up in the near future is my birthday. Too bad our plans didn’t come to fruition… wanted to meet the wife in Vegas for my birthday, followed by the UNLV game the following night. And then book it back home the next day, while she heads back to Georgia to finish off the year. Oh well… things can’t always go as planned. She gotta keep playing that lottery before she moves back!

Love & aloha to da ‘ohana!

  30. Buffoman October 1, 2013 7:58 am

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder was an old saying.

I have seen progress from last year in small increments. In year one, I thought that the special teams performed with more discipline and precision than it did in the previous year. The defense was hobbled with injuries and the offense was befuddled in the new system.

At the start of this year, the defense made huge improvements especially as the injured players had a chance to heal up and as one returnee said, they started to trust the new system, and the coaches simplified the schemes., The offense still struggled, the o-line was still troubled but you could see that they were improving, particularly on some of the running plays. The QB situation was still in flux but Taylor looked like he could possibly get it done.

Then Saturday happened and SS stepped back in. He looked like he played as if he knew something and he didn’t care. He was loose and trusting and it all seemed to click.

So, maybe I am more patient and maybe I am more optimistic, but I see things constantly getting better. A little here and a little there, but always going forward. Special teams play remains constant and good, defense is getting better (but still needs improvement as we are giving up way too many points) and the offense is improving (running game showing improvements, o-line is very slowly getting better, receivers are not dropping catchable balls) and the QB…well there’s still a work in progress there but one can see that the new system is catching on.

The recruiting has been very good.

    #5,

Fangupo a non-qualifier so never made it to school nor on the team yet.

Hopefully qualifies in time to enter school in January so can participate in Spring Ball…..along with other greyshirts (Rashaan Falemalu, Ualesi Sale, Jamie Tago).

  35. NotNasti October 1, 2013 8:21 am

    20. Protector: Kennedy has been playing (last two games), and thus cannot be redshirted.

  38. Former UH Athlete October 1, 2013 9:08 am

Was scanning SJSU blogs/message boards (not well organized)… the fans are panicking after their dreadful performance at home vs Utah St and earlier at Minnesota (who got smacked at home vs Iowa Saturday)

    Just for fun reading…
    socalj:

After seeing zero defense, poorly executed offense, unreliable receivers, and mediocre running game in the Utah State game, and the game will be play in Hawaii. My prediction is Hawaii will be feasting on us like one big luau. All the mistakes we saw against USU and UM games should have not happen and should have been corrected back in the spring. Stanford could have easily blow us out, but they were too nice.

    Final score
UH 38 SJSU 14 (most of UH TD will be from the run)

I’m hoping that I’m wrong in my prediction…. I want SJSU to win, but nothing at this time shows that they are capable unless their opponent is some weak FCS team.

SJSU has good reason to panic, they were picked to be 7-5 this year and expectations were pretty high after Macintyre handed the program off in great shape and most key players returning this year.

Before the season, I was interested to see how Utah St, SJSU and La Tech would fair after losing their coaches to bigger jobs…

–Utah St, has handled the transition the best. They are still good and blew the lead vs Utah had chances to beat USC.
–SJSU (1-3) definitely looks like they dropped, and have been blown out the last 2 weeks and Stanford took it easy on them week 1.
–La Tech (1-4) has fallen pretty hard also, but they lost some key guys to graduation (QB Cameron and 6 of the back 7 on defense) and clearly in rebuilding mode although Skip Holtz is keeping the spread offense, but more balanced as there is inexperience at QB. La Tech has lost to some really bad teams this year.

    The future does look bright.

Agree with everyone that the redshirts should focus on getting their studies in order and get ahead so that they can focus better on football next season. Continue to train both the body and mind. Study the playbook, watch film, get in the gym.

he Defense Department has canceled intercollegiate sports at its three service academies during the government shutdown, according to an announcement Tuesday.

The Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy and the U.S. Military Academy are suspending their football and most other games. Specifically, the Naval Academy said it had canceled a soccer game scheduled for Tuesday night against Howard University and Saturday’s football game against Air Force in Annapolis, Md.

  59. papajoe2 October 1, 2013 11:02 am

Fumblerooski play by Boise State was awesome. I don’t recall any in the UH game. Boise’s O linemen was standing (not crouching) pointing to whatever defensive players they should be watching for or blocking when the center snapped the ball to the qb, who then put it in the rb’s hand through under the rb’s legs and ran right with the other rb. The now ball carrier ran left for a touchdown.

  60. primo123 October 1, 2013 11:10 am

    #59

UH ran the play in the Fresno game.

But, the DE for Fresno stayed home and stopped the run for a short gain.

  61. gobows October 1, 2013 11:21 am

#53 that play was right out of dick tomeys playbook…the muddle huddle…i didnt catch who hiked the ball, for tomey it usually was the qb, bernard quarles, raphael cherry…

  62. Independent Thinker October 1, 2013 11:39 am

If TG is healthy for the next game and starts, then I take back all the nice things I said about chow yesterday.

I also revise my score for the next game to UH loses by 14.

I have no problems with the student athletes. Each is talented and has qualified to play on the team. I am certain each is a good person and will do well in life. Again, no problems with the players/students athletes.

SS has earned the right to start the next game in my book.

Loyalty to your QB is what assistant coaches do. Loyalty to the team and winning is what a HC does. At this point, based purely on performance and results, SS looks like the guy who can lead UH to victory in its next game. I say go with SS. To do otherwise is absurd and shows the HC is still thinking like an assistant coach instead of the top dog.

  66. RedZone October 1, 2013 12:40 pm

Boise’s center snapped the ball back to their qb while they where in the pistol formation that they use. They just snuck in a small wide receiver and had him crouched over behind the right guard. Very hard for the defense to see. Great timing and execution equaled td.

  67. Former UH Athlete October 1, 2013 12:42 pm

    40…

I want to wait to see what the action is like… vegasinsider still doesn’t have it posted yet. I’ll be shopping the moneyline as I’m pretty confident UH wins. If I can find a +175 or +180, I’ll take it.

    GO BOWS!

  73. Derek October 1, 2013 1:10 pm

The way I see it, the only way that Hawaii can win 6 games are:
1.San Jose St. – gotta have the first one at home against a team that is reeling.
2.UNLV – we will be underdogs in Vegas; more motivation getting some points, and I like our defense.
3.Colorado State – another home game, gotta win that. Last year was close.
    4. at Navy – it won’t be easy, but there’s some hope since Navy lost to Western Kentucky. Talent-wise, we match up very well.
    5. San Diego State at home – it’s payback time after last year’s drubbing. They are beatable.
    6. Army at home – it will be on the line, a chance to make it to a bowl game. Incentive enough.

So that’s it Hawaii fans, keep the faith!!! I hope the team keeps improving. Gotta score points and not get slow starts. Games at Utah St. and at Wyoming will be pretty brutal.
Chuckie Keeton is an excellent QB for Utah St. and the elements will probably get us in Laramie, WY.

  74. jeezy33 October 1, 2013 1:20 pm

    73. That’s how I see it. Hawaii can stop the run. Its the teams that can spread it out that will give Hawaii trouble… Regardless, if our offense figures it out, we could be a good team. But that’s a big if.

  75. Marleysdad October 1, 2013 1:23 pm

#70 It’s the odds on the moneyline, no points, straight up. +175 or +180 means you bet 100 to win that. If it was -180, you bet 180 to win 100.

  76. A-House October 1, 2013 1:23 pm

  79. jeezy33 October 1, 2013 1:46 pm

    78. Extremely difficult place to win though… And high powered offense.

  80. Bulla October 1, 2013 1:53 pm

Laramie, not much distraction up there…..pretty much in the middle of nowhere. i think i saw Tommy Lee Jones there when they were shooting Men in Black II, haha..that is how remote it is……not even a Sports Authority for 50 miles…….nothing to get them to lose their focus…they watch the grass grow over there… 🙂 but a lovely place to visit

  81. madeinhawaii October 1, 2013 1:54 pm

The last time the Govt. shut down, weren’t the Military academies allowed to play because they were self-sufficient without government funding? … or something like that?

  82. Jonj October 1, 2013 1:55 pm

To be quite honest all the upcoming games are winnable! We’ve faced all the better teams and did well on D. But it’s all on the offense. Defense we look to be 2 deep on the front 7. The secondary looks good but I think the 2’s might be Alil too young. I am scared for the D being on the field too long. Injuries could pile in a hurry if we dot see the offense helping.

Only question in my mind is do we start off quick or do we go back to boring. We shall see!

  83. Derek October 1, 2013 1:59 pm

In 2011, Hawaii was a 20 point favorite against UNLV in Las Vegas. We had Moniz at QB and we lost a close game the week before in Seattle against UW. My friend played a straight bet at $200, paying $220 on Hawaii. The point spread came down to 18 1/2 either Friday or early Saturday of the game. My friend thought it was a steal and bet another $200, pay $220 straight bet. Me, I just played a $50 parlay with Hawaii in it. As it turned out, UNLV won the game 40-20 outright, one of the worst and disappointing game that I have ever witnessed. If you took the moneyline on UNLV on that game, and paid $100, you would have won $700. The moneyline on UNLV was +700. That’s what happens when a big underdog wins straight up. My friend lost $440 on Hawaii and I lost my $50. My friend and I will be going to Lost Wages next Wednesday for the game. This time I’m sure we are getting some points. And as always, bet with your head, not over it. I think Mike Lawrence said that, on his show “Against the Spread”

  84. HiFlyer October 1, 2013 2:03 pm

Eddie Aikau special on ESPN now.

  85. Derek October 1, 2013 2:05 pm

Do you remember Hawaii going to Wyoming and losing 66-0. And that was in good weather. You don’t forget that kind of score very easily, if ever. At that high altitude and sure to be near freezing temperature, it’s not a good recipe for warm weather football teams. Ask Dick Tomey. He’s one of the few Hawaii football coaches that actually won a game in Wyoming when Blane Gaison was playing. That was a long time ago. The most vivid memory of that game is when Carl Kennybrew turned an interception for a touchdown.

  86. Old School Dave October 1, 2013 2:19 pm

Didn’t one of two buses carrying the UH football team break down on the way from Colorado to Laramie back in 1991 or there abouts? I think UH still won that game.

The +175 means if you bet $100 on UH to win outright, the sportsbook will pay you $175 plus you you your $100 back. Sweet if you can get it. However, if UH is only favored by 4, they aren’t going to give + 175. More like +110 or +115.

  95. kapakahi October 1, 2013 3:32 pm

    Wow!!!

Chicken skin watching the 30-for-30 Special on Eddie Aikau!

  96. Buffoman October 1, 2013 3:40 pm

#95 Brah, I not Hawaiian but proud to be 5 generation in the islands. You live here long enough, especially neighbor island, you understand how gifted someone like he was. In my small community there was such a Hawaiian, quiet and humble and yet larger than life.

  97. AllG October 1, 2013 3:47 pm

ST, is Benny Fonua redshirting this year? He hasn’t gotten any pt

  98. Buffoman October 1, 2013 3:53 pm

If he is wearing #36 he was playing on the special team unit. I could be wrong #97 but I thought I saw him on a fumble recovery sacrum.

  99. Sasa Muli October 1, 2013 3:54 pm

    Sasa says:

Aikau was not meant long for this Earth. He was too good for this realm.

  100. Warrior Dave October 1, 2013 3:55 pm

#97, I thought Benny was playing special teams??? Would be sweet if he could redshirt.

  101. Marleysdad October 1, 2013 3:56 pm

#97, I seen Fonua playing special teams saturday night. Unless someone else is wearing #36?

  102. PolyMom October 1, 2013 4:01 pm

    Eddie would GO!

The football team needs to watch that on movie night.

  103. kapakahi October 1, 2013 4:04 pm

    Benny is still wearing #36.

Been playing special teams…..at least since the Oregon State game.

  104. kapakahi October 1, 2013 4:05 pm

Pierce has also played on special teams too.

  105. AllG October 1, 2013 4:22 pm

Ok thanks for update on Fonua! They probably should have Redshirted him this year since he played as true Freshman last year and is not in rotation this year

  106. AllG October 1, 2013 4:26 pm

Would like to see Stutz used in the slot. I think he had his best year Mack’s last year when they made him a slot. Harding seems a little slow in the slot. Or we could go 4 Wide with both Stutz and Harding as slots and Gant and Haynes outside. Especially with our TEs on the mend

  107. primo123 October 1, 2013 4:38 pm

Where’s Stephen Tsai?? how come he doesnt contribute to his own blog? mia today

  108. primo123 October 1, 2013 4:39 pm

#playbillyray twits worked after all eh?

  109. Buffoman October 1, 2013 4:56 pm

Hope that Benny is picking up the nuances of the LB position at this time. I still believe that he will be a part of the next wave to do some damage from that position.

I think Billy Ray was going to play, but it was nice to have the reinforcements in there pushing that along.

    Saturday cannot come too soon!

  110. Jonj October 1, 2013 5:01 pm

I like BRS in the slot as well. Runs good routes, Has good hands and can turn a small play into a big one. Like we witnessed sat. But I also think if were in a 2 back and TE formation he can play wide cuz he’s reliable.

  111. AllG October 1, 2013 5:08 pm

Like Salas and Pilares I think BRS abilities are better suited for the slot and his stats would explode

  112. AllG October 1, 2013 5:11 pm

Either way we need to keep taking shots down field like we did against Fresno and not play the conservative game like we did the first 3 games. And SS needs to get rid of it quick and please stop staring down ur primary receiver

  113. gobows October 1, 2013 5:33 pm

    #86 old school dave
think it happened to riley wallace and the basketball team.

    #89 primo123

thats a yes and a no.
they will be open, but they ARE run by feds.
they are a non-appropriated fund entity…they ride on their own dime. and they are mandated to provide funding to the mwr. that is why the prices in there are marked up to just below retail market prices but without the tax.

  114. kapakahi October 1, 2013 5:56 pm

    #105,

Should’ve redshirted last season…..since never played MLB before…..and now moved to SAM (strongside outside ‘backer) position this season…..behind TJ & JGW.

  115. kapakahi October 1, 2013 6:01 pm

Billy Ray seeing some PT at slot would definitely help to give Harding a blow.

Harding was totally spent after that last play…..crumpling to the field in exhaustion at about the 15 yardline.

  116. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 1, 2013 6:33 pm

Mahalo to all for joining me in the #FreeBillyRay campaign.

With your kokua and positive thoughts, we were able to help unleash the beast.

Stay tuned for details on the next campaign as we strive for a world filled with better football.

  117. Derek October 1, 2013 7:03 pm

Those idiots in Congress are holding the American people hostage again. We should get rid of them out of office when we have the chance. This is absolutely crazy to sock it to hard working govt. workers whose livelihood it depends on, much less a couple of college football games. What did they do wrong? Maybe joining a service academy. And now they are getting screwed.

  118. jm2375 (iPad) October 1, 2013 7:10 pm

Football is in full swing and basketball is right around the corner!

I see NoClueAtAll has struck again. At least 2 players from Australia/New Zealand (Karaitiana, Timmer) have lost a year of eligibility just because their school year ends in December.

Karaitiana is now listed as a junior. The Australia/New Zealand dual citizen was docked a year of eligibility even while sitting out games in the 2011-12 season because the NCAA determined she needed “to sit a year in residence,” according to UH.
Johann Timmer is now listed as a senior.
Not sure if this affects athletes in the fall sports.

    Let’s try this again.

#73. Are you kidding me?!?!! It appears you’re dreaming of a six win season based on the play of UH during the second half of last weeks football game. And, as as extesion of that (pipe) dream, you – and I’m sure the other fans not drinking the Kool Aide but now intravenously taking it – that UH would then qualify for a bowl game.

Last Saturday night, Sean Schroeder looked like Steve Young (only because both are left handed with brown hair and blue eyes) and almost orchestrated a remarkable comback. I’ll give you fans that. However, the score was 42-3 at halftime. I REPEAT,THE SCORE WAS 42-3 AT HALFTIME. UH had absoltely NOTHING TO LOSE. Schroede came in loose and with the mentality of “let ‘er rip”.

Schroeder has a history. We all saw his play last year. He is hesitant with his reads, holds on to the ball way too long and throws more ducks than bombs. However, even with all the past history that documents what type of quaterback Schroeder is, UH fans still belive “something special is in the air”…….

As the great Gorilla Monsoon used to say to the equally great Bobby “The Brain” Heenan… “Give me a break….”

  121. A-House October 1, 2013 8:55 pm

unfortunately, the House of Reps will continue to be controlled by the Republican “party” as their “gerrymandering” guaranteed that will happen.

they redistricted their precincts to guarantee a Republican will be elected and their numbers will always outnumber the Democrats even if more Democrats voted nationwide as happened in 2012

with their “new” voting rules, it will further strengthen their hold unless countless Republican voters turn against their own and vote in a Democrat or a “straight” Republican and leave the Tea partiers out in the cold

unfortunately for all America, the Speaker of the House has no “alas” and will let a tiny faction of the party dictate what he must do or they will make waves to kick him out

there were at least 11 or 12 families in our office of 51 are affected by the Federal furlough – it’s laughable that 3 Tea Party reps were on national TV spouting off about having the Government “hold up their paychecks” – they don’t get it that those on furlough will NEVER recover what will be lost as they are not being paid

  122. Konoman1 October 1, 2013 9:00 pm

Old School Dave.. I’m sure someone made a shitload of $ from the 2011UNLV game!!!

  123. A-House October 1, 2013 9:02 pm

    #119:

does this mean that ALL Australian and New Zealander athletes now playing sports in USA will be subject to the same ruling or is it particular to Hawaii?

same smell as when the NCAA made a ruling on Costas AFTER UH won the men’s national VB championship, then made it retroactive 4 years, and then ruled that UH “should have known” – of course, lame ass Fraiser backed off about pursuing a “rightful” decision cause some one at the NCAA told him it would be worse if he pursues his action – how can a school “should have known” when no such rule existed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  124. RainbowCliff October 1, 2013 9:33 pm

    Is anyone there ?

  125. cocobean October 1, 2013 9:36 pm

    reality check,

The reality is the team is 0-4. Schroeder’s performance may have been a fluke, who knows if he can come close to that level again.

But he wasn’t the only one to play his best ball ever. For the last 21 minutes of the game the Team played as one. The O, the D and the STs all had an important role in the greatest comeback that almost was. It’s wasn’t only about SS.

The reality is the Team did score 34 points in less than 20 minutes and kept FSU off the score board for that time. This is the reality that many fans are basing their opinions on. They said they think the team CAN, not WILL win 6 games.

The reality is the TEAM – players, coaches and support personnel, down to the last man all believe they CAN win ALL their remaining games. You know they’ll never say it(bachi) but they do believe it.

  126. RainbowCliff October 1, 2013 9:39 pm

    Right On Cocobean !

  127. RainbowCliff October 1, 2013 9:40 pm

    Mr. A-House, HOWZ IT !

  128. kev-1 October 1, 2013 9:49 pm

Derek #73 . . . that is a very realistic possibility. This week will be crucial to the confidence of the team. If they can beat San Jose St., I think they may go on a little run. Confidence goes a long way with a football team. If they can pull of the next three, the game in Utah will be VERY interesting.

  129. RainbowCliff October 1, 2013 9:49 pm

Just woke up from a deep sleep around 7 pm LA Time. It is now 12:45 am here Wednesday, morning and I am WIDE awake. My sleeping patterns since coming back from Hawaii has been so “crazy time” I can’t understand it. Drowsy eyes coming from work, go to sleep then wake up early like now as when I wake up I think it is early morning like 7 am and when I look at clock it is only midnight or 30 minutes after. Can’t figure ?

    Need ADVISE ?

  130. kev-1 October 1, 2013 9:55 pm

Just for fun, collect all the trash in your house and stuff it in a black plastic bag. Go outside and bury it in the yard. Since you’re up, might as well give the neighbors something to gossip about.

  131. kev-1 October 1, 2013 9:56 pm

Sick yeah me? Nah, when I am wide awake, I mess with my fantasy football roster. Shop for some players on waivers or whatever.

  132. RainbowCliff October 1, 2013 10:15 pm

kev-1; No big yard up here in Ladera Heights. Lot of USC alumni as they have been quiet since Kiffin got the ax. Trash is NONE around here as neighborhood watch security car keeps tabs through out the neighborhood. Neighbors here really stick to there privacy as only time I see them driving off in their mercedes, benz or suv going to work or appointment in LA and that is not a full view as a slight hand gesture goes up to acknowledge as they spped away down he hill. Privacy act active here with beautiful homes and NO loud noises or rude intruders.

  133. kev-1 October 1, 2013 10:31 pm

Dang. Sounds like a nice neighborhood. Beats my ‘family of five squeezing into a 2 bedroom’ situation that much of the people I live around are in. Always get action outside – anytime. One side freeway, other side Palolo. What kind noise you like hear, depends on the direction you face. Enjoy the quiet you are blessed with, I guess.

  134. RainbowCliff October 1, 2013 11:20 pm

kev-1: It is a blessing! Many people who I talk too love this area as the homes are breath taking. Top of the elite lives up here with beautiful crescent view of moon at night as you can almost touch it. Took half my life to make it here as couldn’t do it with out LOVE ones who wanted the best for me. One day IF you ever in LA will bring you up. Mrs. RC will have lunch for you and I will let you swim in my pool in the back as it is 60 foot long and 35 foot wide with diving board !

ALWAYS Tsaiko Hawaii is WELCOME !

Good night or rather morning !

  135. Maddog50 October 2, 2013 2:44 am

The score of the FSU game at the half was 21 to 3…..not that it matters but the 42-3 deficit did not occur until midway thru the third…..just for thew record…..Go Warriors.

  136. wafan October 2, 2013 3:10 am

    Good Hump Day!
